This is for tropes related to songs and other fan works. For tropes related to official material go [[Music/{{Vocaloid}} here]].
----
!! Provides examples of:
* AccentUponTheWrongSyllable: [[SturgeonsLaw If used badly]], the vocaloids can end up singing like this, especially the English ones.
* ActionGirl: ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BZt_Dob28Y First Virus Resistance_ Assault Chapter]]'', ''Lience'', ''Festival of Asylum'', ''Mozaik Role'', ''The Cursed Glasses - stray girl in her lenses'', ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTdce6ix_go&fmt=18 Paradise of Light and Shadow]]'' and ''Holography''.
* AfterlifeExpress: One possible interpretation of ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYzwznQbPGg&fmt=18 Rinne]]'' is as about a girl stuck on one of these.
** ''The New Millenium'' plays the trope in elevator form, though it turns [[MindScrew very Gainax, very quickly]].
** The ''Sand Scraper'' train could also be seen as one.
* AliceAllusion: ''Alice Human Sacrifice'' by Miku, Kaito, Meiko and Kagamine, ''Alice in Dreamland'' by Kaito, ''Persona Alice'' by Miku, ''Boku to Alice no Wonderland'' by Len, ''Alice'' by Hatsune Miku. A ''lot'' of songs have ''Literature/AliceInWonderland'' theming.
** ''[=ALiCE=] iN BLACK MARKET'' by Miku's DARK Append, if only for the title.
* AllJustADream: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmpA4s95sW8 Mrs. Pumpkin's Ridiculous]] [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Dream]].
* AllThereInTheManual: Anything related to the [[{{Mothy}} Story of Evil]] series, going as far as the characters' names, as well some very important facts about characterization and plot, especially including how the twins got separated in the first place and the fact that [[spoiler:Rin's character does not remember that Len's character is her brother]]. Information has been released on Akuno-P's blog along with really really fast flashes of text on the velvet mix versions - and a ''novel series''.
* AndIMustScream: The fate of anyone unfortunate enough to enter the ''[[CircusOfFear Dark Woods Circus]]''.
-->'''Miku''': [[FateWorseThanDeath I want to die]]
--> [[DrivenToSuicide I want to die]]
--> [[TearJerker Please, somebody get me out of here]]
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: A quite literal example in "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1bRPDSSQYQ The Path to Eternal Hapiness I found it]]".
* AnswerSong: "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjNFTxoifiw The Face]]" (epilepsy warning) is a response to another song called "The Name".
* ArcSymbol: The grass circlet in one of the [=PVs=] for ''Servant of Evil.'' Two other [=PVs=] replace it with a yellow flower petal and a golden locket.
** From ''Synchronicity'', we have Rin and Len's treble and bass clef necklaces.
* ArcWords: Common in song series:
** {{Mothy}} has many listed on his page. For a narrow example, ''Story of Evil'' has "if we could be reborn...", "I will always protect you, so please always be smiling", and "little glass bottle".
** ''Synchronicity'' has "keep singing"/"please sing" and "paradise".
** The ''Lost Libretto'' series (''Bad End Night'', ''Crazy Night'', ''Twilight Night'') has "mitsukita" ("I found it"). This one is particularly noteworthy because it's always said at the same point in each song by the same character (in all three songs Miku says it during the climax).
** ''HELLO*PLANET'' has "ohayo" ("good morning").
** ''re_Cycle'' has arc words in a fictional language; "Sew weylos aryu-feir nez zolto. Wi-s tina zi-di mor ele-fi ro-eltyeir." We don't find out what this means until the end: [[spoiler: [[UndyingLoyalty "I am an eternal existence. For you, I will always find my way by your side."]]]]
* AttractiveBentGender: Kagamine Len, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H22xjO-lTtg in the video for]] ''Imitation Black''. This song became way more popular (not to mention much faster) than any of Natsu-P's other songs on Nico Nico Douga.
** Also for [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMQfdz5EdoQ Fate: Rebirth]].
** He stays this way in Natsu-P's other Visual Kei videos involving [=VanaN'Ice=].
** Basically Len in general: Most Servant of Evil PVs feature Len in Rins dress.
* AxCrazy: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVFfeTIWWco Fear Garden]].
* BadassLabcoat: Interpretations and fanart of Honne Dell have him in one.
* BadassTeacher: Several fan depictions of Kiyoteru Hiyama make him one of those, as well as they make him a CoolTeacher.
* BatmanGambit: A particularly strange one is perpetrated by Len in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKv7cw_Z1P4 Kokoro]]. Also noteworthy for being a non-sibling, non-"mirror image" relationship between Len and Rin.
* BasedOnATrueStory:
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcP9HSa9lk4 When I Get Home My Wife Pretends to be Dead]] was based upon a question asked on Yahoo! Answers Japan.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q4ZR_Bye_4 Calalini]]'' is based on the life story of Jani Schofield, a young girl who was diagnosed with one of the most severe cases of childhood schizophrenia.
* BearsAreBadNews: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJny2S00dOA Moonlit Bear]]. And wait until you get a good look at the bear.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: ''Kagome Kagome''.
* BetterAsFriends: The plot of the song ''[[{{ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin}} Just Be Friends]]''
* {{Bifauxnen}}[=/=]SweetPollyOliver: Rin in ''Skeleton Life.''
* BigBad: Many songs will have a villain of some kind, for example:
** "Alice of Human Sacrifice" has the Little Dream; it lures people into its world and either gets them trapped ([[BloodKnight Meiko]]), kills them ([[DrivenToSuicide Kaito]]), drives them insane ([[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Miku]]), or some combination thereof ([[CreepyTwins Rin and Len]]) all because it's afraid of what will happen to it if people forget about it.
** "The Lost Libretto" series has the mysterious cloaked figure at the end. Maybe. [[MindScrew It's still unclear]].
** The "Story of Evil" has Riliane (Rin), which is later subverted when [[spoiler:it's revealed that [[BiggerBad the real villain]] was Prim Marlon (Prima)]].
** The "Synchronicity" series has Luka's character, also a WellIntentionedExtremist. She's the one continuing the human sacrifices and doing so because she thinks it's the only way to appease [[BiggerBad the Dragon]].
** "Dark Woods Circus" has the [[EldritchAbomination "Chairman"]], who's in charge of the titular circus.
** "Wide Knowledge of the Late Madness" has the runner of [[BedlamHouse the asylum]], who is experimenting on the inmates for fun.
** The [[ImmortalityImmorality Scientists]] in "Kagome Kagome", who are cutting up [[AdultFear children]] to learn the secret of immortality.
* BilingualBonus: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JGaQ3g8WU4&fmt=18 Matryoshka]] has quite a lot of Cyrillic in it. The NicoNico version even has the lyrics in Russian!
* BetweenMyLegs: Len is framed between Miku's at about [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8qZ1y-BlGo&t=0m52s 0:52 into]] ''SPICE!''.
* BittersweetEnding:
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geUeWJfoLJE Hello, Planet]], though it's more of a "sweet ending with a little bit of bitterness". Bitter part: Miku [[spoiler: dies]] in front of her master[[spoiler: 's grave]], not only from damage to her body (from the rain), [[spoiler: but sadness, as well]]. Sweet part: [[spoiler: Miku's tears cause the plant to sprout, she reunites with her master in the afterlife, and it's implied that her little plant actually ''reseeds the whole planet'']].
** The game based on the song actually has two endings: in the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSvOvQRVbPE alternate ending]] [[spoiler: Miku's singing revives her dead master, and after a tearful reunion the two work together to revive the world with their potted plants]].
* BloodFromTheMouth: Rin in "Paradise of Light and Shadow," as a sign that her duties as the [[BarrierMaiden Dragon Diva]] are eating away at her life force.
* BoyBand: There is one producer who is rather fond of making Kaito, Len, Gakupo and Kiyoteru this. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5vggTPx7zY Just]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFydufghmgA a few]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-OysB04C_E of]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I78lR9YHa1c her]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW3VpGOsdMc works]].
* BreakingTheFourthWall: In the Putin-P series, there's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJyVzfPYbuA a whole song]] about Rin and Len commenting about the illustrations in their previous [=PVs=].
* BrokenRecord: ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGMO1ko5EuM Wide Knowledge of the Late, Madness]]''; ''Watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi... [[MadnessMantra watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi...]] [[GoMadFromTheRevelation watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi...]] [[NightmareFuel watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi...]] watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi... [[AndIMustScream watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi...]] [[OverlyLongGag watashi...watashi...watashi...watashi...]]''
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0fGhz4shMA Kokoro]]'' by Rin. ''Arigato, arigato, arigato, arigato, arigato...''
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebAKoRcYFTA I Like You, I Love You]]'', also by Rin. ''[[CannotSpitItOut Ano ne, jitsu wa, ata, atashi, ata, atashi, ano, ano, ano ne, anata ga, aa, atashi, gomen, matte, ata, atashi, ata, atashi, ano, ano ne...]]'' ''sususususususus-su su su su su su su su su su''
** The demo song of V3's Akikoloid has a serious case of this. ''A-ki-ko-ro-i-do-a-ki-ko-ro-i-do, Akiko desu. [[JapaneseRanguage Roido]] desu. Akiko desu. Roido desu. [[MadnessMantra Akiko desu. Roido desu.]]''
* ButNotTooBlack: Subverted with Lola: considering that the English Vocaloids' character models are subject to the viewer, her skin color varies from black to white (it's usually one or the other). Played straight with Sweet Ann.
* ButtMonkey: Leon. His most common incarnations are an extremely hairy man and a Nightmare Fuel render of a man that commonly appears in the magazine Leon. Most of his videos are parodies.
** Kaito can also be seen as this. Half his songs are just parodies of others (though his originals are quite good), and in things like [[{{ChibiMiku-san}} Chibi Miku-san]] is made fun of ''all the time''.
* BystanderSyndrome:
** Miku literally tells you to not give a damn about anything in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPhg-Kj3emI Whatever]]''.
** Also, in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qLlyqR19gU I Refuse]]''
** A portion of "Hold and Release, the Rakshasas and the Carcasses" features Miku singing back and forth to herself about how the problems of strangers don't matter.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNSQiro50ck People Are Dying Somewhere]] laments this.
* CannotSpitItOut: The whole point of Rin's "I like you, I love you." Subverted in that she does spit it out at the end, but it took a long time to get there.
* CassandraTruth: The focus of the Sonika song [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq38wa3jGwo Cassandra.]]
* ChronicallyKilledActor: If we go with the interpretation of Vocaloids as AnimatedActors, Len is definitely an example of this.
* CircusOfFear: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AU6PL0LH4_Y ''Dark Woods Circus'']].
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uef7F01tju4 ''Circus Monster'']] probably counts as well.
* ConjoinedTwins: Rin and Len in Dark Woods Circus, who were sewn together.
* {{Conlang}} - Kaito's breakthrough song ''Pane dhiria'' is written in Japanese and an Arabic-sounding language called Hanamogera, a completely made-up language by the creator.
** Luka's ''re_Cycle'' has ArcWords sung in a made-up language, but unlike ''Pane dhiria'', it does not appear to have a name.
** [=SeikoP=] always uses a made up language for her Luka songs.
** [[http://vocaloid.wikia.com/wiki/Kaoling Kaoling]] is one of the most famouse composers to use their own language.
* TheCoverChangesTheGender: This is averted with surprising frequency -- several male Vocaloids have covered ''Love is War'' and ''Romeo + Cinderella'', for example, with the [[GenderAndJapaneseLanguage very feminine]] lyrics left untouched. Covers that do bother to change the gender usually dramatically alter the lyrics, often for a PerspectiveFlip from the point of view of the implied male love interest. This is also the typical practice in fanmade covers.
* CovertPervert: Some fans seem to have a lot of fun portraying Gakupo as such. Kaito as well (''Lord Of Darkness'', a parody of ''Daughter Of Evil'', is a good example of this). Also Luka, who is a bi/lesbian pervert in ''Japanese Ninja No.1'' (although she may just have been hired by Kaito).
* CreepyChild: Whenever the Kagamines are depicted as CreepyTwins.
* CuteClumsyGirl: [[IdolSinger Kisaragi Momo]] of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk-wPp9Ru3I Kisaragi Attention]]is this in spades. She trips over a cat, runs into a pole, and hits herself with soda can within a few seconds of video time. From the same series, [[IJustWantToHaveFriends Mary]], the main character of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMWn6wBhaEA Imagination Forest]]trips over her book in the latter video and spills drinks over Momo in the former, showing shades of this trope as well.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OHlydrSSXw Risoukyou ~Utopia~]].
* {{Cyberspace}}: ''Nebula''
* DarkerAndEdgier: The [[http://fanloid.wikia.com/wiki/Hagane_Vocaloid Hagane Vocaloids]], heavy metal versions of the main Japanese Vocaloids.
* DealWithTheDevil: In [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZzI4Jz1O0s ''Joker'']], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxzmspNVUzY ''Alluring Secret~Black Vow'']] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lkUQI0vYHc "Duke of Venomania"]] (some of the images in that are NSFW).
* {{Delinquents}} : Miku in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3_-VVhdteM Kutabare PTA]]''. (Explicit).
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: In Miku's 39's Giving Day concert, she and the other singers (most notably Megurine Luka) are sometimes singing into handheld mics while clearly wearing headset mics.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p05kNlnzWKs "Hurting for a Very Hurtful Pain."]]
* DirtyCoward: ''Urotander''.
--> ''"Yes, by every means possible, we go for the victory."''
* DownerEnding: Any horror or tear jerker song that doesn't have a BittersweetEnding usually gets this. For example, ''Alice of Human Sacrifice'' ends with [[spoiler:Meiko being imprisoned forever, Kaito dying/killing himself, Miku going insane and the twins wandering Wonderland aimlessly for the rest of their lives with no hope of escaping. Oh, and the [[BigBad Little Dream]] is ''[[KarmaHoudini still]]'' plotting to lure people into its world and drive them mad/kill them, meaning that ''anyone'' ([[ParanoiaFuel including YOU]]) could be its next victim]].
* DrivenToSuicide: The presumed endings of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iT5BFGQ4YE Telepsychola Theatric]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz1-aHL82Cs Saigo no Revolver]], and many others.
** Note that in ''Saigo no Revolver'', the bullet hole of the second gunshot landed neatly over [[spoiler:Gumi]]'s name in the credits. That same bullet is shot right when another bullet that was already shot [[spoiler:when Gumi shot her lover]] was over the ??? name. [[spoiler:??? was the one who Gumi killed.]]
** Supplementary materials confirm that this is what happened.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1WhfIHOYxU (It's Not) World's End]]'', however, is fairly explicit about it.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w4C8v8WNCA Tower]]'' is all about suicide.
** The PV for ''Alice Human Sacrifice'' suggests that the Second Alice (Kaito) shot himself.
** A popular intepretation of ''Rolling Girl'' is that it's about a girl struggling with wanting to commit suicide.
* DrowningMySorrows: Haku does this because she believes she can never become as good a singer as Miku.
* EldritchAbomination: The Chairman from "Dark Woods Circus" and the Little Dream from "Alice of Human Sacrifice" both give off these vibes. Depending on the PV, the latter will often be depicted as a HumanoidAbomination too.
* EmoTeen: The protagonist of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osLl7gkfUHU Nasimoto-We, Kill Me]]. She's not sympathetic at all.
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: The girl in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hsc4LW-la-M Headphone Actor]]'' goes through this.
* EveryGirlIsCuterWithHairDecs: Rin has a bow and quite a few hair clips as some distinguishing features.
** Many female vocaloids sport this in one form or another. Fanworks can grant this to all of them.
* EveryoneIsBi: The Vocaloids' sexuality varies from song to song.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: ''Double Lariat'' is a whole song about spinning as far as possible.
** ''Rolling Girl'' subverts this.
** Miku's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbbA9BhCTko leek spin]].
* EverythingsSquishierWithCephalopods: Takoluka
* EverythingTryingToKillYou: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcobwJrsMmY Pandemic]], though [[spoiler: don't take it as the truth]].
* ExpressiveHair: In some fan depictions, Miki's ahoge changes shape according to her emotions. Teto's [[OjouRinglets drills]] can become [[ThisIsADrill real drills]] when she's in berserker mode, too.
* {{Expy}}: Within its own fandom, there are all kinds of counterparts of the original Vocaloids. Kaito and Miku have the most. Miku even has several that are [[AscendedFanon officially recognized by the original creators]].
* {{Fangirl}}s: Miku and Luka are this in ''Rin-chan now''. To LoonyFan levels.
* FanOfUnderdog: Any person who likes any of the UK-loids or Voyakiloids tend to be one of these, some out of pure spite for people who dislike them.
* {{Fan Vid}}s: Any sufficiently popular song will ''inevitably'' receive at least one of these.
* FantasticRacism: A surprisingly common topic. The Evil series includes racism based on hair colour, with Haku being shunned for her naturally white hair and all green-haired people being murdered by the princess. The ogre in ''Ogre and Maiden'' is threatened with a TorchesAndPitchforks mob just for hanging around near the village, and is only able to befriend a blind woman who doesn't know that he's an ogre. (The same "oni" metaphor crops up in ''The Person who Loves a Demon''.)
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpJtSKfbQdM Witch]], by Luka, focuses on her persecution because she's a witch.
* FemmeFatale: ''Perfect Liar'' and ''Megurihime Buyoukyoku''
** Luka in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoOdaEK4ceU Bullet for Prisoner]]
* FiveManBand: Various instances:
** In the Synchronicity series:
*** TheHero - Len
*** TheLancer - Gakupo
*** TheSmartGuy - Kaito
*** TheBigGuy - Meiko
*** BarrierMaiden - Rin
** The [[FanNickname Cryptonloids]] are portrayed as this in [[{{Fanon}} fanon]]:
*** TheHero - Miku (due to being the most popular)
*** TheLancer - Rin and Len (the second most popular and Miku's closest friends in fanon)
*** TheSmartGuy - Luka (as she's usually the [[OnlySaneMan most rational of the group]])
*** TheBigGuy[=/=]TeamMom - Meiko (often portrayed as rather violent)
*** TheChick[=/=]TeamDad - Kaito (due to being the ButtMonkey)
*** Rin and Len could switch places with Kaito and vice-versa at times, but for the most part this is a pretty steady fanon depiction.
** An alternate arrangement of the [[AddedAlliterativeAppeal above]]:
*** TheHero - Miku (same reason)
*** TheLancer - Meiko (due to the minor fan war between Kaito/Miku and Kaito/Meiko fans. Meiko can also double as the TokenEvilTeammate or TeamMom, depending on how much the fanfic writer likes her)
*** TheSmartGuy - Len (who is also usually portrayed as being more rational than the others)
*** TheBigGuy - Rin (as most fans believe that she's the [[LittleMissBadass toughest]] of the group)
*** TheChick[=/=]TeamDad - Kaito (same reason)
*** SixthRanger - Luka (the last Cryptonloid to join)
*** Luka and Meiko can also switch places.
* FoeYay: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcjLYw7qOHw&fmt=18 "Rondo of Sun and Moon".]] Miku and Luka obviously have some sort of love-hate relationship going on, with a splash of[[spoiler: TogetherInDeath and ReincarnationRomance]].
--> ''"From when our gazes met, we were attracted to each other / I want to leave a scar on your back that will never disappear."''
* FoodPorn: Luo Tianyi has an entire song, "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTmd7mI6WWQ Milenium recipe song]]", dedicated to Chinese culinary and how delicious it is.
* GainaxEnding: Bad End Night. Just...''what?''
* GardenOfEvil: Fear Garden.
* GayAesop: Possibly the original version of ''Magnet''. The original version is not clear as to ''why'' Miku and Luka's love is forbidden, but the fact that they're both women implies that this is the case.
* GenderBender: Each official Vocaloid has a genderbend.
** Miku (Mikuo), Kaito (Kaiko), Meiko (Meito), Gakupo (Gakuko), Luka (Luki/Luke), Gumi (Gumiya/Gumo), Sonika (Akinos/Kaniso), Sweet Ann (Spicy Andy/Sweet Ani), Len (Lenka/Lenko and Rui), Rin (Rinto/Rinta and Rei), Kiyoteru (Kiyomi), Yuki (Yuuki/Yukito), Miki (Mikio), Lily (Li/Lio), Leon (Leona), Lola (Loyal/Lan Allison), Miriam (Wiriam), Prima (Primo/Primano) and Big Al (Little Ally/Big Alice).
** One is PlayedForDrama in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxzmspNVUzY Alluring Secret ~ Black Vow~]]'' - Via a DealWithTheDevil, Rin turns herself into Len in order to get together with Miku.
* GenreBusting: There are many that fit this somewhere on the internet, but [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoBW-uhia9A Hayabusa]] deserves to be mentioned.
* [[GogglesDoSomethingUnusual Glasses Do Something Unusual]]: Very much with Rin and Gakupo's "''Noroi No Megane''"
** Although the moral behind it might be about how we should treasure the way reality looks.
* GratuitousEnglish: "''Gugurekasu''" has the correct-but-oddly-inflected "Please do not ask me why" and the just odd "All of you wants to know me, I think". Don't forget Miku's [[Music/BlackRockShooter "Brack Rock Shoota"]] and Luka's ''Crimson Camellia'' which is full of Engrish. "[[{{Engrish}} I CAN'T FRY...I CAN WALK]]"
** "''Gugurekasu''" also has the final lyric, which most people can't even understand because of its obscurity: "Please search it with this Google."
** Gakupo and Gumi's same-tune (different key) cover, "''Aniimo''." While "Please understand my feelings" and "I worry about you, always" at the beginning are [[SurprisinglyGoodEnglish grammatically correct]] (albeit strangely inflected, like "''Gugurekasu''"), the final "You are only one for me" ''would'' be perfect, if not for the missing "the."
** It is excusable, however, by the fact that English sounds that do not exist in the Japanese language nor are inflected in the English way are nigh impossible for a Vocaloid to use, DependingOnTheWriter. This is possibly one of the reasons for Crypton's decision to produce more English-native Vocaloids, starting with a new bank of English phonics for Miku.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yppk4jt0yo4 In "ALICE iN BLACK MARKET"]]: "I am seeing you till die forever."
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czDzdawUij4 In "Russian Roulette"]]: "You should be die, shoot head with gun."
** Luka's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LciylndQPu8 DYE]] seems to be nothing but Engrish.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PYLbhFuJ5Y "My Dear Loneliness"]] has: "We are lonely, dear vanity / You are buddy, I love you." ...Buddy?
* GratuitousRussian: "''Matryoshka''", sung by Hatsune Miku and Gumi.
* GroundhogDayLoop: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONyfbDPc7y0 "Heat Haze Days"]] features one of these. [[spoiler:Two of them, even.]]
* HairColorDissonance: Miku's hair. Officially its teal, but numerous fan arts, PVs, and songs depict it ranging from a bright turquoise to green, and in some of Toyota's commercials where she appeared, it has a shade of blue.
* HangingJudge: Kaito as Gallerian Marlon is one of these in "Judgement of Corruption".
* HappinessIsMandatory: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWIjvPuY2jo Happiness and Peace of Mind Commitee]] demands it.
* HeroicSacrifice: The fate of [[spoiler:Len/Rin]] in ''Alluring Secret ~Black Vow~'' to save [[spoiler:Miku's life after Kaito shoots her, out of jealousy]].
** Also [[spoiler:Allen (Len)]] pretends to be [[spoiler:his sister, Rilliane (Rin)]], and allows himself to be executed as her in Servant of Evil.
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: Some Vocaloids have no official art, while others have official art, but no ''voice'' (such as Goyaloid).
** Generally, in any song in which the Vocaloid addresses his/her master, the master either isn't shown or is one of TheFaceless.
* HollywoodToneDeaf: PlayedForLaughs in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE_Aj-qg_9Y this parody]] of ''Magnet''. [[JustifiedTrope According to the creator of the parody, it's because Gakupo and Len are singing while drunk]].
* HowDoYouLikeThemApples: The [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoHR6ty0KSw 3D PV]] for ''Romeo and Cinderella'' prominently features Miku holding a red apple, possibly for a "Literature/SnowWhite" reference or ForbiddenFruit motif.
** Alluring Secret~ Black Vow~ feats this. Also a Forbidden Fruit moment.
* HumanSacrifice: [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin ''Alice Human Sacrifice''.]]
* HumiliationConga: "Owata"
* IconicOutfit: Len's dress from Imitation Black. Although just about any clothing of the Vocaloids in any popular song, really.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: samfree's "Night Fever" series, which will always have the Vocaloid's name (or some variant of it) repeated twice in the name of the song (and it will always have two syllables), followed by [[LuckyCharmsTitle a star]] and some variation of "fever", "night", or "burning/fire".
* IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim: Meiko realises in the Evil fan-song ''Daughter of Revenge'' that if she kills Len, she will be taking away the only one who loves Rin, doing effectively the same thing Rin did to her. [[SubvertedTrope She kills him anyway]], deciding that she's able to live with the burden of being evil if that's what it takes to get her revenge.
* ImAHumanitarian: Meiko in ''Conchita, the Epicurian Daughter of Evil''. And in some versions of ''Trick and Treat'', Rin and Len.
** Kaito in ''Dark Woods Circus''.
** Miku in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L-hgyEDVlQ 'The Full Course for Candy Addicts'.]]
* ImmortalityImmorality: The medicine in ''Kakome Kakome''.
** ''Utopia'' and ''A Ray of Hope''. Humans transferred into Androids may have souls, but not morals (or Logic. Because natural humans tend to wage war, the United Nations decided to transfer all humans into androids. Those refused to do so are eliminated to preserve peace. [[HypocriticalHumor Killing for peace's sake]]). Eventually deteriorating into eliminate all humans.
* ImprobableAge: According to [[http://akunooukoku.com/ this site]], the main character in ''Judgement of Corruption'' is a talented judge, despite his young age.
* ImprobablyFemaleCast: There are currently over twice as many female Vocaloids as male ones; and of the dozen or so males, at least one is close to being AmbiguousGender.
** The unfortunate reality is that a man Vocaloid is ''always'' a big risk. Kaito flat-out bombed in his initial release, Kiyoteru is easily the least popular of all of AH's products, Tonio barely gets the time of day, and Big Al (by far the best-received of the English Vocaloids) has gotten at best mixed reviews. On top of that, any man who wants to break into the market now will have to compete against Kaito, Gakupo, Kiyoteru, Big Al, ''and'' [=VY2=]. A few new male ones are in the works, but more and more of the new characters (especially the Japanese ones) have been female.
** The sole exception to this is Len Kagamine, but this is justified by being partnered with Rin Kagamine in the same product. To make it stranger, Len's voice bank comes from the same voice actress that Rin's voice bank originates (Asami Shimoda).
* IfICantHaveYou: Gumi in ''Sunset Love Suicide''.
* InLoveWithTheMark: The plot of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoOdaEK4ceU Bullet for Prisoner]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz1-aHL82Cs The Last Revolver]]. Coincidentally, they both end in [[spoiler: [[DrivenToSuicide suicide]]]]
* InsaneTrollLogic: With extra information from the songwriter, it is revealed that [[BloodKnight Meiko]] in ''Alice Human Sacrifice'' was trying to kill everything because she believed it would bring her out of Wonderland.

Ah, Sou.''
** There's a lot of debate about whether ''Two-Faced Lovers'' (also known as Ura-Omote Lovers) falls into this, or if the translators are just trying to SpiceUpTheSubtitles.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB1M14Rq8qM Blackjack]]'' may be this, or it could just be Luka cranking up her {{Femme Fatale}} side {{Up To Eleven}}.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: Common in Masa-P's songs.
* IntoxicationEnsues: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwPcD4Zwr78 Sweet Float Flats]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Luka's rendition of ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vxXjx568RA The Little Mermaid]]'' and ''Servant of Evil''.
** Meiko [[spoiler:even in her past life as the girl's teacher, at first]] is in love with her best friend in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb4xkEiewIw The Thought To Tell]]. She then attends her best friend's wedding...
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCumYYj4A3k ''Love is War'']] is a subversion. As the title suggests, the singer is willing to do most anything to ''prevent'' her beloved from being happy with anyone else.
** The ogre in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5tJUbLscb4 ''Ogre and Maiden'']] eventually cuts off ties with the blind woman and stops coming to visit her, afraid that her neighbours will blame her for bringing him to the village. He does it to keep her from being hurt, but [[IWillWaitForYou she remains rooted to the spot, waiting for him to return to her]], until the day she dies, so it's hard to say that it made her happy as such. [[spoiler: The ogre does come back to the maiden much later, disguised as a storyteller, in which case she probably was very happy.]]
** Rin's goal in Paper Planes.
* IWantSong: ''World is Mine''.
* JapaneseDelinquents: The eponymous character of ''Rolling Girl''. Then she falls in love and gets sort of better. The PV for Project DIVA extend however, turns her disaffection with society into full-blown reality break-down.
* JustForPun: The "__ Renka" (lit. "__ Love Song") series, often romanized to "__ '''Len'''ka". If you wanna take it a step further, [[FridgeBrilliance "ka" could also be taken to mean]] "'''Ka'''gamine". Some of these become LostInTranslation, such as {{Yandere}}nka.
* KangarooCourt: "Judgement of Corruption"
* KillAllHumans: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytep6dHir_I Overloaded System ft Clara]] as a robot whose circuits burn out after one too many experiments, resulting in her sealing the laboratory and [[TheDogBitesBack killing the scientist]].

* KissMeImVirtual: The tragic tale of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLntnXQNLIA Rainbow Girl]].
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj8NLH_i7NI My Honey in the Tragic Dimension]] is another example.
** Of course, being virtual singers who can be programmed to sing whatever the user desires, Vocaloids end up with a lot of songs about this trope.
* LampshadedDoubleEntendre: Several lines of ''Romeo and Cinderella'' are suggestive.
* LighterAndSofter: One artist on Nico Nico is known for drawing cute, cheerful [=PVs=] for depressing or creepy songs, reinterpreting the stories to make them seem more positive. So far s/he has done this to the ''Evil'' series (it turns out the whole thing was a charade to teach the selfish princess a lesson), and ''Alice Human Sacrifice'' (EveryoneLives, the twins find and befriend the dream from the beginning of the song, and they all go on a journey to explore Wonderland together).
* LongTitle: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeVhHLggZ5U Paradichlorobenzene]] is a real chemical.

** Ie no Ura de Manbou ga [=ShinderuP=] (often shortened to just [=ManbouP=]) is particularly fond of this trope, coming up with nuggets like [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDIQ2Ypxv7Y A Clingy Boy Sticking for 15 Years]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhYWGo4K1ds Time-warped After Chopping My Stag Beetle]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhKIOZnPjtg A Classy, Tactful Fire Extinguisher]], and his piece de resistance (and producer name) [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYWQzuSDBNo An Ocean Sunfish is Dead at the Back of My House]].
* LoveChart: [[http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/318545/chinese-hatsune_miku-kagamine_len-kagamine_rin-kai Here]], but it's only one person's take on it and with only five of the characters.
* LoveDodecahedron: The Evil Series[[note]](including fan made songs)[[/note]]. Rin is in love with Kaito, but Kaito is in love with Miku, as is Len; Haku is in a RomanticTwoGirlFriendship with Miku. According to a fan song, Miku apparently reciprocates Len's feelings [[spoiler: before he kills her]]; however, this is proven incorrect by [[AllThereInTheManual the additional information]]. Some fanon claims that Kaito and Meiko's cooperation is more than that, but this is generally disregarded.
* LoveMartyr: Len and Rin are constantly playing this game. Notable examples include the Story of Evil series.
** Len again, [[MindScrew maybe]], in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znir_s4Q9BA The Riddle Solver Who Can't Solve Riddles]]/[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOIxHLGWgQE The Riddler Who Won't Solve Riddles]].
* LoveTriangle: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEdICiBQV9Y Acute]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2SgPM9ayAg Imitation Black]], and many others.
* LyricalDissonance: A common theme. Some more notable examples:
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqcfew2JCes I wish they'd just die]]''.
** ''Just Be Friends'', a confusingly peppy [[BetterAsFriends breakup song]].
** ''* Hello, Planet'', a [[{{Retraux}} chiptuney]] happy pop song about Miku waking up AfterTheEnd and wandering through a deserted dystopian wasteland in search of her owner. [[spoiler:[[DownerEnding Both videos to the song end with her dying in front of her creator's grave and meeting up with him in the afterlife.]]]] To ''happy closing music''.
** ''Iwatte Yaru'', a song that talks about how the singer is jealous of everybody with happy and meaningful lives, but instead of cursing them, she'll congratulate them since she knows it will all end anyway. The song sounds more like a [[ChristmasSongs Christmas tune]]. For those curious, [[BilingualBonus both "curse" and "congratulate" translate into words pronounced "iwatte"]], making the song take on quite a [[SarcasmMode sarcastic]] feel.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0uU2PZVfM8 Kaito ga Uninstall]]'' uses the melody of the depressing ''{{Bokurano}}'' OP, but changes the lyrics to say how Kaito [[{{Yandere}} hopes that he and his master will be with each other forever]], [[AxCrazy and the steps he's willing to take to ensure that]].
** Miku's ''Twinkle Capsule'' to a lesser extent. A peppy little song about drugs.
** Saihate - a bubbly pop song to Miku's last words to a person after their funeral.
** Luka's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY60xu-Bm00 Love Disease]], which is a jazzy, upbeat song about a StalkerWithACrush.
** ''(It's Not) World's End'' is an almost overwhelmingly cheerful, fast ska-ish song, but the lyrics are the thoughts of someone moments before committing suicide.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjIJ6tGebFs Don't Look At Me]] sounds like a chipper song with toy sound effects and a cute and happy-looking video. The interpretation of the lyrics so far range from suicide to abortion to drug abuse.
** Another song from Kikuo-P, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ckUVKUeklA Let's Go to Heaven,]] also qualifies. This happy-sounding song heavily implies that the couple [[spoiler: has died by the end of the song, but do apparently reunite in Heaven.]] Similarly to the ''*Hello Planet'' example above, exactly how sad the ending is may vary from person to person.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbFx1CckHdc The Saga of A Hero.]] The song has a rather epic feeling to it, but the hero described in the song actually is being revered for sneaking into the girl's bathroom and taking pictures.
** Deep Sea Girl starts out like this. It sounds all up beat, the chorus sounds very uplifting and hopeful, but the translation of the first stanza? "Sinking deeper and deeper into the sea of misery/ I don't even feel like opening my eyes anymore./ At this rate I could just sink all the way to the bottom/ Without ever being noticed by anyone." [[spoiler: It gets better at the end, with the Deep Sea Girl finding love.]]
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0gAwCFHdEA Senbonzakura]]''. Upbeat song with depressing lyrics check and check.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIcRdpTDnRI Hello / How Are You]]'' is even more disconcerting than ''Hello, Planet''. Despite its cute GratuitousEnglish and upbeat melody, [[http://www.animelyrics.com/doujin/vocaloid/harohawayu.htm the lyrics]] are mostly about depression, loneliness, and thoughts of suicide... though the ending is, at least, vaguely hopeful.
* MadnessMantra: The Spider and The Kitsune-Like Lion has the chanting of ''Yurusan, yurusan, yurusan…''
* ManChild: Big Al is being turned into one in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MVDdGT99GM Little Toy Robot]]''.
** Not really. The song accounts the robot's story of being a little boy's toy, being abandoned for many years, and then becoming the toy to the now grown man's son
* MindScrew - Vocaloid songs tend to have a lot of these, but [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lunu6sE5Q4 Tower of Sunz]] deserves a special mention. Eight minutes of black chickens, circus scenes, multiple Mikus and general what-the-fuckery.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozs079hRq8c Francium]]'', [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa9fjZDMUhU High Sense Nonsense]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ri4SkfWsFU Crazy Clown]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQih8wmIn_M Bad End Night]].
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D92UjBjdIgk Waribashi Onna]]. The whole thing is about an odd not-Miku girl having a crazy dream about trying to break apart chopsticks, doing something that is censored, then inexplicably goes into a brief talk about politics before she starts ''running in space'' with the other vocaloids getting hit by a meteor in the background, trying to hug an angelic Miku, then waking up to eat bad noodles before getting a nosebleed from angel-Miku sticking a chopstick in her nose. It ends with an image of the girl's head on a fish body.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znir_s4Q9BA The]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOIxHLGWgQE Riddler series]]
** The [[http://www.youtube.com/user/MatamuneDin Putin-P series]]. Rin works for Vladimir Putin, Len is a dog, and Miku is going out with Ronald [=McDonald=]. And that's just the beginning; the series consists of 4 parts with a total of 41 songs.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mujvVHUdrKE&fmt=18 Thoughtful Zombie]] is almost halfway comprehensible, but the backing track tends to detract from that, resulting in this again.
** Just about everything by Hachi, whose songs are about as dense as the classic literature your teachers made you study all through high school.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhYWGo4K1ds Time-Warped After Chopping My Stag Beetle]] is about Gumi [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin going 50 years into the future after karate chopping a stag beetle]], and it just gets weirder from there. [[spoiler: The song becomes surprisingly serious towards the end.]]
** In-song example, although the confusion does carry over to the listener: why ''is'' there [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYWQzuSDBNo A Sunfish Dead At The Back of My House?]]
** The way {{mothy}}'s songs are connected can be ''extremely'' confusing.
* MotorMouth - ''Disappearance of Hatsune Miku'', ''Kagamine Len no Bousou'', ''Ike Lenka'', ''Two-Faced Lovers'', ''Yomi-zakura'', ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG5bESZaTQ0&hd=1 Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!]]'', ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5R85Ee0MuQ Dejineko Pop Nuku Mix]]'', ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6M2ppKwuZY Nehanshika]]'', and ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeA86lonJoY Rin Chan Nau]]''.
** A lot of songs by {{cosMo}} (Bousou-P) are like this.
* MouthfulOfPi: "1000 Digits Pi Challenge": [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFNKdwaQgD8 Luka]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqc-VnT_4Ek Meiko]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRR0H5NNfKs Miku]] ([[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaMWEz-jaHE another]]).
* MoodWhiplash: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQKYbBU4sPo Super Hero, by Len.]] It starts off with a boy trying to be a super hero, like the ones he seen on television. He begins by saving kittens, picking up litter, stops bullies, and saves a woman's purse. Later in the song, he tries to stop what he believes is the real enemy-the government. Unfortunately for him, [[spoiler: he ends up killing innocent people, is sent to prison, and is known as a terrorist. [[RealityEnsues "This is not how it ended on tv."]]]]
* MurderTheHypotenuse - [[spoiler: Kaito does this]] in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxzmspNVUzY Alluring Secret ~ Black Vow~]]'' [[spoiler: but it's subverted when Rin/Len sacrifices his/herself to bring Miku back]]. Some interpretations of [[LoveTriangle ACUTE]] feature this as well.
** Miku tries to do this to Luka in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oCkBBaEfFg scissorsroid]], for stealing her master. She is stopped by Luka's love and admiration for her. [[spoiler: It's false. Luka takes the scissors and stabs Miku.]]
* TheMusical: ''Kokoro'' and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMcBMlA9hxE Alice in Musicland]]
* NatureAdoresAVirgin: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btqZejLvZFU I Can Take Off My Panties!]]
* NeverMyFault: Discussed in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osLl7gkfUHU Nashimoto-We, Kill Me]].
* NightmareFetishist: If AnimatedActors is true then the Vocaloids must ''really'' like doing creepy songs/videos.
** Producers who qualify include Machigerita-P, Hachi and {{Mothy}}.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Riliane (Rin) has one at the beginning of ''Daughter of Evil''.
** From the same creator, we have Conchita (Meiko) in ''Master of the Graveyard''.
** Miku in ''Synchronicity: Paradise of Light and Shadow''.
* NoInfantileAmnesia: Played with in ''Servant of Evil'' -- Len remembers that he and Rin were twins, but Rin doesn't (the two were separated when they were very young).
* NostalgicMusicbox: Fittingly, this is used in the first verse of ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9YS-Avph70 Recollective Music Box]]''.
* NothingIsScarier: While ''Wide Knowledge of the Late, Madness'' is most famous for a fanmade PV interpreting it as being a prequel to Dark Woods Circus, with everything clearly shown the original upload of the song simply had a spinning head, leaving all interpretation to the imagination, making it ten times scarier.
* NotSoDifferent: In ''Daughter of White'', Haku finds that she's unable to kill Rin even after learning of her crimes, because Rin is just like "the old me, a tremendously lonely person".
** In the related fan song ''Daughter of Revenge'', Meiko figures out the TwinSwitch, and that Len is motivated by love just like she is, but doesn't stop the execution. Seeing Rin in the crowd, Meiko reflects that "you and I are the same" and that she is every bit as wrong as the Daughter of Evil was.
* ObligatoryBondageSong: The as-of-yet untranslated ''[[http://nicosound.anyap.info/sound/sm2820478 A Certain Masochist's Love]]'' (NSFW). ''Iroha Uta'' also has some such elements.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8boT8ZPwVI "Naked Meltdown"]]
* ObliviouslyEvil: Part of what makes ''Kagome Kagome'' so tragically disturbing is that the [[CreepyChild creepy children]] in it seem to genuinely believe that their "game" is supposed to be fun and have no idea that what they're doing (read: tricking people into playing with them and then killing them) is wrong.
* ObsessionSong: Plenty. See {{Yandere}} below for some of the more extreme examples.
* OrphanageOfFear: In ''Kakome Kakome''.
* OtakuSurrogate: Gumi is this in ''Sorry For Being a Closet Otaku''.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: The [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esfNYYkVJP8 Lord of Darkness]] is basically a perverted anemic whose strength might be ''less'' than a regular human's. He's even kind of stupid and actually forgets the few special powers that he does have.
* ParanoiaFuel: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkjTq_nHB90 Secret Police]].
* PlanetOfHats: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnrgc_23zDo Maid no Hoshi Kara SOS]] involves a planet of [[{{Meido}} maids]].
* PlayingCardMotifs: In ''Alice Human Sacrifice'' each protagonist corresponds to a suit.
* PersonalityChip: In Kokoro, it's a full-fledged program.
* POVSequel: The ''Evil'' Series. ''Servant of Evil'' tells the events of ''Daughter of Evil'' from Len's POV. And there's ''Daughter of White'' which tells the story from [[AscendedMeme Haku's]] POV as the close friend of Miku. Miku herself also has a song telling the story from her POV, ''Maiden of Wood ~1000-Year Wiegenlied[[note]]"Wiegenlied" is German for "lullaby"[[/note]]'', and ''Handbeat Clocktower'' tells the story from the POV of both Kaito and Yuki.
* PowersThatBe: The "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkjTq_nHB90 Secret Police]]" are this, though they are ambiguous in their goals. They will maintain world peace, but if you stay in their way, you will be [[UnPerson UnPersoned]].
* PygmalionPlot: ''[[CaptainObvious Pygmalion]]''
** And [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzkDQoY3Uco Leia]], where an artist falls in love with a painting.
* RevengeByProxy: A common interpretation for Meiko's character in the ''Evil'' series is that she [[spoiler: figured out the TwinSwitch, but decided to go through with the execution anyway]] in order to get her revenge. There is one well-known fanmade song, ''Daughter of Vengeance'', that runs with this theory; however, it has officially been [[{{Jossed}} proven incorrect]] by the additional information.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Meiko in ''Daughter of Revenge'' begins a nationwide revolution after losing her family, farm, and lover.
* {{Robosexual}}: Any song associated with the Vocaloids' romantic love towards their master. Happens most frequently with Kaito or Miku ([[YaoiGenre regardless of th]][[YuriGenre eir master's genders]]).
** Kagamine Len no Bousou plays this just for laughs.
* RuleOfSymbolism: When you get passed the BodyHorror, the PV for''Bacterial Contamination'' has plenty of symbolism for the effects of bullying. In fact, the body horror in and of itself could be seen as symbolic.
* SadClown: ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_C321Z7ziM Pierrot]]''
* ScaryMusicianHarmlessMusic: Not quite "scary/harmless" but...Sasakure.UK's music tends to be of the "heartwrenching/emotional/philosophical" type. * SchoolgirlLesbians: Rin and Miku in "Doki Doki Yuri Gakuen".
* ScrewYourself: Rin and Len, when portrayed as mirror images. Also any Vocaloid and their Genderbend, to some extent.
* SevenDeadlySins - {{Mothy}}[=/Akuno-P=] likes to focus on this, demonstrated by his "Heartbeat Clocktower", which outlines the roles he's given his songs -
** Evil Series (Rin, Len) - ''superbia'' (pride)
** ''The Tailor Shop at Enbizaka'' (Luka) - ''invidia'' (envy)
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV99NZmurVA Madness of Duke Venomania]]'' (Gakupo) - ''luxuria'' (lust/luxury)
** ''Conchita, the Epicurean Daughter of Evil'' (Meiko) - ''gula'' (gluttony)
** TBA (Gumi) - ''ira'' (wrath)
** ''Sleep, the Gift from the Princess'' (Miku) - ''acedia'' (discouragement/sloth)
** ''Judgement of Corruption'' (Kaito) - ''avaritia'' (greed)
** All seven are mentioned in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKdTGZIlSm8 Chrono Story.]]
* ShaggyDogStory: ''Owata'' is essentially a song about a Gakupo (or Miku) missing a meeting with a friend and couldn't tell him because his phone was dead. In the end the friend had cancelled.
** ''Noroi no Megane'' is about a mysterious stranger (Gakupo) giving Rin a pair of ridiculous-looking glasses. With her eyesight already being 20/20 and the fact that the glasses only makes her surroundings look MORE distorted, she goes looking for a way to remove them. She also enlists the help of a doctor and a priest (played by Gakupo) who only adds to the load. When she finally learned that the way to take them off is hidden in a library at a secret island, she finds out that she can't read the map even though she has already prepared the boat. At the end of the song, the stranger visits her again and reveals that the glasses actually give her REFRACTION instead.
* SheCleansUpNicely- Kaiko's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9DLSECDF_U Snow Girl]], [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb4puTZlTbM Lady of the End]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kdOGjljCC4 Your Kotodama Curse]]. For a girl who sounds like a chipmunk most of the time, Kaiko sounds beautiful in the right hands.
** She sounds pretty good singing [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky0bEQOqYyg "You"]] from [[HigurashiNoNakuKoroNi Higurashi]], too.
** Also in this version of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpdxB7Qf2h8 Cantarella.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Rin, Len and Miku avidly ship Kaito and Meiko in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR_tCurEQfc the latter two's cover of "Melt"]].
* ShoutOut: To Yahoo in ''Gugure kasu'' (Go Google It). As for the other ShoutOut in that song, [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin well... You should be able to figure it out.]]
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcs0p92gs2Y&fmt=18 Wonderland and Sheep's Song]]'' is essentially a giant ShoutOut to StudioGhibli.
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbbhmgq4cGA 1925]]'' makes references to classic 1925 silent films. By 1:10, Creator/CharlieChaplin in ''Film/TheGoldRush'' can be seen. Following up is Miku dressed as a sailor in front of what is unmistakably the poster to ''Film/BattleshipPotemkin''. This troper didn't recognize the part that came after but has a suspicion of it also being a movie reference of some sort.
** In "Love is War" Miku uses a megaphone to sing like [[http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1174/5144300320_8f0636dcaf.jpg Mike Patton]] and 2D of the Gorrilaz in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw8PpYBiDsc "Feel good inc"]]
** ''Hello, Planet:'' A cute robot left behind after the devastation of the planet helps to restore it back to life. [[WesternAnimation/WallE This sounds familiar.]]
** "Death Should not Have Taken Thee!" by Rin and Len is basically one huge shout out to the ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' series. Hell,the title itself is a quote from the game!
* ShrinkingViolet:
** Luka, in the song ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG6-dLH-o40 Toeto]]''.
** Clarith (Haku) in the ''Story of Evil'' series.
** Rin in the song ''I Like You, I Love You''.
** Mary in the ''Kagerō Project'' series has shades of this.
* SillyLoveSongs: ''[[http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/591525 Cupmen (song for cup ramen)]]'' is a sweet, bouncy ditty about a LethalChef who desperately wants to cook delicious food for the person she likes, but always ends up making instant ramen "with water heated by the power of love". He's less than pleased but eats it anyway to make her happy.
* SlasherSmile: Both Miku and Gumi in ''Matryoshka''.
** It's also visible in the preview version of ''Judgement of Corruption''.
* SnowMeansDeath: A common interpretation of ''Christmas Morgue''
* SomethingElseAlsoRises: Used considerably in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvTH7J2shuI Ura Omote Lovers]]''
* SopranoAndGravel: Most of Utsu-P's works.
* SoundtrackDissonance - Sasakure-P and his TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt series, especially ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7vF-hB55E4 The (Week) End is Coming!]]'' and ''* Hello, Planet'', describing an AfterTheEnd / Right Before The End world with bright and shiny melodies and drawings.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwPcD4Zwr78 Sweet Float Flats.]] All of the tenants lead depressing lives (abusive relationships, money problems, drug addiction, etc), while the song and title sound cheerful and optimistic.
** There's also the numerous ''Disappearance of Hatsune Miku'' editions, among them the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTOngDS0dRI Kaito video]].
* StealthPun: Rin has a song called Clockwork. Anyone else notice that this makes her [[spoiler: Literature/AClockworkOrange?]]
* [[StreetUrchin Street Urchins]]: Rin and Len in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFnwfmiIT2Y Orphan]].
* StarCrossedLovers: The whole point of the song ''magnet''. Other examples include: Gumi and the guy she's singing about in ''The Last Revolver'', Rin and Len in ''Prisoner/Paper Plane'', Rin and Len (again) in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Egf3Sbtp9TQ Yume Sakura]]'', Luka and Len in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNMI2NJC3f8 Ryuuren Kagetsu (Floating Love, Shining Moon)]]''... I could go on. Needless to say, this trope happens ''a lot'', especially to Rin and Len, who are really angst-happy.
* StockholmSyndrome: Averted in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjPKY1bGscU Stockholm Syndrome.]]
* TakeThat: You say you didn't like the ending of ''Servant of Evil''? [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMlQHDje6uU&translated=1 Watch this]].
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vskq8UW6B5Y The Red Shoe Parade]], which is most likely a TakeThat to extremist religious institutions and such groups who believe that even the most monstrous of crimes are acceptable as long as it's in the name of [[InsaneTrollLogic grand justice]].
* TastesLikeDiabetes: Kasane Territory and Nekomimi Switch.
* ThemeTuneRap: Like the old "Pokémon Ieru Ka Na" song that was a rap with the names of all the original Japanese Franchise/{{Pokemon}}, a Vocaloid collab song appeared called ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P6RhEeuFZQ Isshu no pokemon ieru no ka!]]'' for the new [[VideoGame/{{PokemonBlackAndWhite}} Isshu (Unova) region Pokémon]], complete with a few nifty [[ShoutOut Shout Out]]s to other Pokémon songs such as the original "Ieru Ka Na" and the Lavender Town theme. Most of the Vocaloids (plus Teto) get to rap their own parts of the song; although sprites were created for Len and Luka for the video, they are notably absent.
* TheyKilledKennyAgain: Len and Kaito have a bit of a reputation...
* TightsUnderShorts: The main character's [[spoiler: girlfriend]] in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9d1KcJe5c4 Two Breaths Walking]] has something very similar (leggings under shorts).
* TimeAbyss: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkh7xMZyY0s Time Forgotten One]]. It takes a bit of thinking to realize [[spoiler: he's just a statue]]
* ThroughTheEyesOfMadness: ''Wide Knowledge of the Late, Madness'' and ''Alice Human Sacrific
* TogetherInDeath: Rin and Len in ''Proof of Life/Soundless Voice''.
* TookALevelInBadass - In ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH7r3-hU8kQ Festival of Asylum]]'', in which everyone ends up in a group of demon exorcists (or "The Anti-Masked") against a mysterious Masked Devil, wielding guns. Gets even more badass when Miku gets possessed by the Masked Devil, and ends up using a sword against Rin's gun. (To be fair, Miku loses.)
** Gumi in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD55cL-zJqo Saigo no Revolver]]'' in which she's a badass agent with a gun assigned to kill a man... until [[InLoveWithTheMark she falls in love with him]]. She still shoots him, even though she goes into depression later and implies she might commit suicide (whether that gunshot at the end was a thematic gun sound a la Anime/{{Noir}} or her actually committing suicide is up to interpretation; some maintain she never even killed him).
** The song itself is ambiguous, but supplementary materials confirm that [[spoiler: Gumi's character did in fact kill the man, and then herself.]]
** DECO*27's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S_7KGJfuvY "Mozaik Role,"]] which involves Gumi facing off against a shadow of herself. Complete with, at one point, [[spoiler:getting speared in the gut and nearly killed by her alter ego. With a '' freakin' pair of scissors.'']]
** Pretty much everyone in the Synchronicity series, a bit in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOJCpEBPV2I Looking for you in the sky]]'' and oh so much in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTdce6ix_go&fmt=18 Paradise of Light and Shadow]].
** Kaiko in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9DLSECDF_U Snow Girl]] is not the sweet girl she's usually portrayed as, but a BloodKnight.
** Kaito in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdIz5lHxYOw Sayang]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV99NZmurVA The Madness of Duke Venomania]]
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2SXc0dH4K8 Judgement of Corruption]]. Not only does Kaito take bribes to hand down innocent verdicts, but he refuses to surrender his fortune for salvation and willingly falls into the deep pits of hell and he takes his daughter with him, resolving to once again gather fragments of the original sins and make hell into a utopia for him and his daughter.
** Rin in the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BZt_Dob28Y First]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xck74CM8ucY Virus]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4yzw_QJ21E Resistance]] Series.
** Sf-A2 Miki gets her own in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLLkasMHmV4 Lience]]''.
** The PV for ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1EfjBPSOps BLAZE]]'' makes Miku and Neru into sword-wielding schoolgirls and has them fight each other, along with all the other Vocaloids and even some [=UTAUloids=].
** ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1zF60reTQY The Secret Police]]'', [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhQMRBOzXX0 re_Cycle]], ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW-6U5bCyS4 Karakuri Burst]]'' and''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_Ku_BLpujg Disurare]]''
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Kaito has his ice cream (Vanilla Haagen-Dazs), Meiko her sake (One Cup Ozeki), Miku and leeks, Len and bananas, Rin and oranges, Gakupo and eggplants, Luka with her octopus (Takoyaki) and tuna, Gumi with carrots, Miki with cherries, Kiyoteru with chocolate, and Yuki with apples. Some fans base their habits and sexual orientations on this, as [[FreudWasRight Len is a girly boy who likes to eat bananas.]] The idea of a "character item" carries over to {{UTAU}} too (Teto with her french bread) as well as the fanmades and the Engloids (although the latter two rarely use food).
* {{Troll}}: Some fanmades and [=UTAUloids=] are made for this exact purpose; the most famous being the [=VIPPERloids=] Kasane Teto, Yokune Ruko and Namine Ritsu, who are April's Fools jokes from 2ch. One who's less of an April's Fools and more of a TakeThat to some fans who make MarySue fancharacters is Kawaiine Kagami, the Annoyloid, who surprisingly uses Gackpoid's voice.
** Akita Neru was derived from a troll.
** Tei Sukone, also from 2ch, is another example. Her unoriginal design is a TakeThat at everyone whose [=UTAUloid's=] outfit is a PaletteSwap of Miku's, her personality is a TakeThat at fan characters who love Len and hate Miku, and her sharingan is a TakeThat to {{Naruto}} fan characters who have it. Unlike Teto and the other [=VIPPERloids=], however, she is immensely hated by those who don't realize that she was made for trolling.
* TrueCompanions
* {{Tsundere}}: ''Go Google It'', ''Tsunderenka'', ''World Is Mine'' and ''Kocchi Muite Baby''.
** Deconstructed in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIQDGwyJpSo ''Torinoko City'']].
** ''Every'' Vocaloid has a chance of being tsundere at some point, due to the nature of the program.
* TwinSwitch: Rin and Len do this in the ''Daughter of Evil'' series and in ''Monochrome Ward''.
** In [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI9H2JND2Qg "Not a Dream, Not a Lie, A Happy Scene Before My Eyes,"]] Miku [[ActingForTwo plays a pair of noble twin sisters]] from the Shogunate era. The girls entertain themselves by switching places so each can participate in the skills or arts that she excels at, making it appear as though both girls are amazingly multi-talented. When a rebellion threatens the Shogunate, it's decided that the [[LadyOfWar younger sister]] will be married off into an enemy family in order to lower their guard. However, the [[YamatoNadeshiko older sister]] decides to go in her place, since the younger sister's combat prowess will be needed to help defend their home. Not long afterward, the rebel army launches an attack on their castle. The younger sister [[FaceDeathWithDignity prepares to die on the battlefield]], taking comfort in the knowledge that her beloved twin is safe. [[spoiler: And then the [[BigDamnHeroes older sister shows up]] [[MoodWhiplash while possessed by the spirit of]] UsefulNotes/OdaNobunaga [[MoodWhiplash and singlehandedly crushes the rebellion.]]]]
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xojv-qwbEn4 Dawning Light, Your Song.]]'' is about a girl crying all night after realising that her longtime crush [[LikeBrotherAndSister only sees her as an old friend]] and is dating another girl. She tries to keep both her feelings for him and her pain secret, so that he won't worry about her.
** Gumi in ''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV99NZmurVA Madness of Duke Venomania]]''.
* {{Unreliable Narrator}}: Wondering why the bear in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJny2S00dOA Moonlit Bear]] want the apples that badly? Well...
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: In ''Bad End Night'' and its sequels, Rin and Len are a pair of [[CreepyDoll living dolls]]. And nobody, not even [[OnlySaneWoman Miku]], bothers to comment on or notice this. [[spoiler:Although the ending implies that Miku [[AxeCrazy isn't all that sane anyway]] and ''Twilight Night'' implies that she was related to the inhabitants of the house somehow]].
* [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential Vocaloid Cruelty Potential]]: Lampshaded in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_2K2d91Im0 Kagamine Len no Bousou]]. "Stop making me sing those perverted lines..."
* VillainousGlutton: Meiko in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyw6J88eksA Conchita, The Epicurean Daughter of Evil]] where she literally eats anything and everything, whether they are edible or not. She even goes as far as eating [[spoiler: her two servants, Rin and Len]] and eventually [[spoiler: eats herself]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Meiko in the Evil series fansong ''Daughter Of Revenge'', from a certain point of view. Sure, she ''did'' depose the evil princess who executed anyone who dared speak against her...but she also killed a comparative innocent simply because he cared about the princess, and Meiko wanted Rin to feel the pain of losing absolutely everything that one loves. In the last verse she [[NotSoDifferent explicitly compares herself to Rin]], saying that "even if I am called a heroine, I, too, am a Daughter of Evil".
* VisualKei: [=VanaN'Ice=], project by natsu-P which comprises of Kaito, Gakupo, and Len; with Len always [[WholesomeCrossdresser wearing a dress]] [[FetishFuel in every video]].
* VisualNovel: "All the Songs With You in the Future," a worksafe story about Hatsune Miku, was created and sold through [=DLSite=], and [[FanTranslation translated by fans]] into Chinese, Russian, and English. The same creators made a story about Rin Kagamine called "Rin ga Utau, Mirai no Neiro," and it also has on-going fan translations.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic: Miku's ''What's Up?'' constantly has symbols flying around amongst kanji commenting on human nature. The symbols are labelled at the end, but still seem to be organized in any particular way.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: We never do find out what happened to [[TheSmartGuy Gakupo]], [[BlackKnight Meiko]] and [[KungFuWizard Kaito]] in the ''Synchronicity'' trilogy. While they were last seen [[BolivianArmyEnding being defeated by Miku]] it's highly unlikely that they're dead, since Len survived the attack. However, they are never seen again afterward and in the final installment they only get a cameo--in a ''flashback''.
* WhatMeasureIsANonhuman: In ''Division -> Destruction of Hatsune Miku'', the creators actively try to delete Miku's humanity because they want to control her. Not to mention the countless songs that make you feel guilty for uninstalling a computer program...
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Whenever [=VanaN'Ice=] has a music video, Len is in a dress. He also does this when he pulls a TwinSwitch with Rin in ''Servant of Evil''.
** And [[spoiler:Kaito]] may actually be this in ''Venomania'', if the Duke is the villain.
* WifeHusbandry: [[WildMassGuessing Possibly,]] in akka's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9d1KcJe5c4 PV]] for ''Two Breaths Walking'', since the boy meets the girl way back then when he was still a child ([[PrecociousCrush and fell in love with her too]]) and upon meeting again when he was [[SheIsAllGrownUp all grown up]], she still looked the same.
* WordSaladLyrics: Some songs tend to fall into this trope. One example being the song "AHS Funky" in which "AHS"(as in AHS Software) stands for Asian Hong Kong Shocking.
* {{Yandere}}: The [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Yanderoids]]--Kiku, Ikou, Taito, Rei, and Rui; some songs, such as ''Kaito ga UNINSTALL'', ''[=RIP=RELEASE=]'' ("I'll tear your throat right now and make you only mine"), [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGThHuZ3lBQ ''Rotten Girl, Grotesque Romance'']], ''Eternal'', ''[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Yanderenka]]'', and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg1mwobY-B8&hd=1 ''The Tailor Shop at Enbizaka'']] have the original Vocaloids act as yanderes as well.

** Luka's [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY60xu-Bm00 Love Disease]]. Starts off with what seems like Luka striking up a happy relationship with someone, but then [[spoiler:it turns out to be just daydreaming...then she finds out her crush is dating someone else and she's not pleased about it at all.]]
** Rin in much of Putin-P's songs, especially noted at the end of [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80IHXMhq_DQ I'll Give You Chocolate!]] although [[spoiler:that side of her seems to have calmed down, or at least hidden in the more recent songs]]
* YouAreNumberSix: In the [[http://shujinnovel.com/character.html character list]] for the novelization of the ''Prisoner / Paper Plane'' series, Len's character is only referred to as "Number 420".
* YourCheatingHeart: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVefsp_lrAM Gift From the Princess Who Brought Sleep]] has Kaito cheating on his wife Miku and going after other girls. [[spoiler: Miku corrects this by poisoning him to death/eternal sleep, everyone else in the town and eventually herself.]]
** In [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8L75guzMn4 The Tailor Shop on Enbizaka]], the tailor is unhappy that her lover has been unfaithful and doesn't return home to her. On three separate occasions, she sees him with different girls who all die mysteriously throughout the story. Finally, she confronts her lover [[spoiler: Only for him to not recognize her and she murders him. It turns out he had never met her and her "lover" was already married and had two daughters, who were all murdered by the tailor.]]
