Gensokyo 20XX is a fanfiction by Creator/Amoridere (who is known for writing Goodbye Chen) and it chronicles the life of Reimu, Ran, Chen, Yukari, and Flandre that escaped from the now destroyed Gensokyo. The first part has been completed and has different narrations besides Reimu. The sequel includes different narrations through different chapters and various haiku. Also, the series includes small side stories. Three more stories were later added to the main storyline.

The author also author posted a new series called The Gensokyo Diaries as a tie-in.

----
!!The series in General:

* AmbiguousTimePeriod: It is hard to say exactly when this fic takes place, although it is clear it takes place in the future and that time is otherwise implied to be slower in Gensokyo than it would in the Outside World. This is made rather clear later in the series when you have to question the children's ages and how long time seems to have passed. Of course, this can be chalked up to WritersCannotDoMath, as Amoridere prefers to skirt around the issues relating to the passage of time by keeping it vague.
* AnyoneCanDie: Even an immortal like is no exception to this.
* AlternateUniverseFic: It can be surmised that the characters are weaker than in canon
%%* AnimeHair: Yes, true to most of the characters in the Franchise/TouhouProject.
* ArtifactTitle: The first one took partially took place in Gensokyo, the rest of the series, save the some of the sidestories, do not.
* BookEnds: The Main portion of the series began with Reimu narrating and the series ends exactly with her narrating.
* BreakTheCutie: Yes, for individual ones, see below in the individual sections but majority of the series aside from the side stories seem to have one cutie to another being utterly broken
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: It has been stressed periodically that some of the events could have been avoided and it is very right at proving that.
** For example, Seija wouldn't have consumed that food and water in the first place if she had been killed, like Yuyuko suggested.
** More or less but Chen wouldn't have been attacked and had her left leg and arm paralyzed from nerve damage and incontinent if someone had gone outside with her or if she was kept inside.
** A large one that we could see would be that Ran and her offspring wouldn't have been imprisoned if she had ran like Yukari told her too, and the fact that Reimu wouldn't be so easily in danger if she could run, let alone walk, which wouldn't have happened if Ran didn't let the times turn her selfish and negligent (she regretted this later and still does, by the way). The latter is made more apparent by the fact that Reimu was the first they managed to capture and that was because she couldn't run.
*** Going along with the above, if Eirin did voice her concerns and if they took the time out to listen, then maybe Reimu could have been safe from imprisonment by hiding in a human settlement. Of course, she knew they weren't, so she stayed quiet.
** According to Amoridere and from what we can read about the two, Yukari and Reiko wouldn't be at odds with each other involving Reimu if they had agreed to work something out after the terms of the agreement or, alternatively, if Reiko never picked her as a wet-nurse in the first place.
** On the note of Reimu consuming rat poison during the events of Gensokyo 20XXV, that could have been very well avoided if they have kept a better eye on her. However, this is somewhat justified in that no one could have anticipated for her to eat poison and neither did they know that someone carelessly left it where she could get to it and, while she has got out before, Reimu has not got into anything that almost killed her.
* DarkFic: To some degree and it is even more so later on, since hard times never seem to leave and it is implied things turn out worse. By Gensokyo 20XXV, it lightens up.
* DeathFic: Not to a heavy extent but the it's there and a lot of the characters do die. Even immortals are no exception.
* DeconstructionFic: Somewhat, to a certain degree, if you take into account that certain degree where a lot of things are being played realistically. Later on, the series deconstructs the FearlessInfant trope, pointing out how such a thing could be hazard, in this case, as said child doesn't even have a sense of danger and doesn't respond to fear or pain. Case in point would be that Reimu, being age-regressed to three, has crawled right into kitsune territory apparently not afraid, the implications of this being that Maribel and Renko being about that age wouldn't. This fic also deconstructs the ChildrenAreInnocent trope pointing out how this is detrimental as well, when Chen slits her wrists trying to get Ran's attention, when the latter becomes apathetic and depressed.
* FantasticRacism: Mostly prevalent in the most of the main storyline and it is clear how the humans in the outside world tend not to view youkai in a good light and are quick to persecute them.
* FromBadToWorse: Yep, excluding the side stories, though it is more like from Worse to bad to worse again. Gensokyo gets destroyed->> Ran's veil getting pulled off->> Them being imprisoned->> WorldWarThree ->> EndlessWinter. Times seem to be getting better, though.
* HandWave / JustifiedTrope: More often than not some of tropes listed are justified if not outright hand-waved or a combination of both.
* KilledOffForReal: Being a DeathFic. Youmu, Cirno, Daiyousei, Remilia, Wriggle, Reisin, Shinki, Alice, Marisa, Sanae, Suwako, Flandre, and Eirin.
** As we learn in Chapter 55: Alone and Sober from Suika, Yuugi and if this quote is to go by, "Of course, Yuugi isn't here and won't be, not now, not ever, although, she is in a far better place, some place that isn't hell, this place is hell and where she is isn't.", it's likely she died some time during the events of Gensokyo 20XX.
*** In 20XXII, Aya later dies.
** Also, as we found out from Mokou, Keine and she died apparently not too long after fleeing to the Outside World. Later on, it is stated she died of illness
** Sakuya, Meiling, and Patchouli
** As of chapter 50 in Gensokyo 20XXIV, some of those characters were brought back from the dead, through Yukari bending some of the borders of time to bring some of them to the future.
** From Gensokyo 20XXV, Koishi may now be added to that. Later on we have Satori, who dies in her sleep.
** Also from 20XXV, Yume Ni is revealed to have passed away of illness. Later on, passes away and, in the final chapter, Kosuzu is mentioned to be "long gone" by the final chapter comes.
* LawOfInverseFertility: Whoo boy, where and how do we start? See below for more specific ones.
* Motifs: There are several of them but the most noticeable ones are voices of characters already passed away or otherwise absent and the present characters responding back to them
* ShoutOut: Go Here
* SwitchingPOV: Aside from one of the side stories and one-shots, the main series has it where the POV changes from different characters
* TheVoice / HearingVoices: We do hear voices from those otherwise absent if not deceased and the characters do respond back to them.
* WeirdnessCensor / PerceptionFilter: Justified and HandWaved, as it seems most of the series relied' on this, allowing them to live in some secrecy and it was shattered when someone uncovered it, Amoridere stated:
--> On the note of the non-human characteristics, well, Ran is a shapeshifter, being a kitsune, so they really wouldn't have noticed her and she also has been hiding them with hats, scarves, veils, and long dresses and Chen, being I'm not sure if she can shapeshift, had hers hidden by long dresses, and usually bandannas. On the note of Flandre, well, that's easy, with the help of treatments and spells, she TURNED human, a five year old with xeroderma pigmentosum, in order to escape and live in the Outside World, virtually undetected. On the note of how no one notices them outside of those factors, well, I guess that could be explained by the humans there not bothering to look, though, it would seem odd that they have woman with a hat or veil and wears a very long dress and a little girl with long nails but I guess that is how this world works, so it is a safe assumption that things don't seem too out of place in that circumstance whereas in our world we would have thought something of it. Eventually, later on in the series, someone does notice something and it throws their lives into turmoil.

!The Series

!!Gensokyo 20XX-20XXII
[[folder: Gensokyo [=20XX=], Gensokyo [=20XXI=], and [=20XXII=]]]
* AbusiveParents: While technically not her mother, in the sequel, due to how hard their lives were, Kanako took to beating Sanae as a way of venting frustrations
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: In 20XXII, Chen does mention a few times that Yuyuko pats her on the head with her fat soft and squishy hand.
** Mokou does this to Kaguya, like one would do their little sister.
** In chapter 7 of 20XXII, Koishi does this to Satori.
* AffectionateNickname: In 20XXII, Suika calls Satori (to whom she apparently confides in the most) "Sattie".
** Her little sister, Koishi, has one and hers is "Koiko"
** Mokou also has one and that one is "Huzi". For those who don't understand, one of the transliterations of her name is "Huziwara no Mokou" Hence the nickname
*** Used to a saddening degree with Yukari, to whom Mokou refers to as Tosca because of her sacrifice
** Kaguya's nickname is "Kagu"
** Apparently, one for Ran is "Rannie" and another for her would be "Ran-mommie" from Chen
*** In Gensokyo 20XXI, an affectionate nickname for Chen was "Chennie"
*** For Yuuka, Ran was "ducksie" and she refers to everyone as "dear".
%%* AsianFoxSpirit: Ran, her lovers, and her babies are kitsune.
* AwfulTruth: Mostly in 20XXII.
* BabiesEverAfter: At the end of 20XXII, Ran strikes up a romance with Kitsune and is pregnant again.
* BedlamHouse: Subverted, actually, it's not really that but that is how Yukari and Kaguya tend to think of the place where they're imprisoned and they have a reason to think that way in that the purpose is to drive them insane as an a way of control and that they both fear lobotomies, which makes sense as apparently that warden wasn't above having a small child injected with tranquilizers for screaming. It also makes sense in that it was described by Yukari as being something akin to a "draconian asylum" that people were terrified to go to for the above mentioned reason.
* BerserkButton: A minor one that Yuuka has is being rude to her (like shouting at her and, if you're a child, calling her a bitch).
** As we recently find out, apparently dealing harm to Ran and Reimu is also this
** For Suika, in Gensokyo 20XXI, doing harm to Reimu, saying, "If there is so much as one hair missing from Reimu's head, heads are going to roll and I am bringing all my peoples!"
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Hinted at to be a reason for Eirin's suicide, though in this case, it would be a "better dead then imprisoned."
* BigEater: Yuyuko most definitely, so much so she's become a champion Sumo wrestler and, surprisingly, the mascot of a restaurant.
* BigFun: Yuyuko is very large, eat constantly, and works as sumo wrestler but is also very loving, kind, good-natured and is up for taking care of Rumia and Chen after Aya's death.
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** If her narration in 20XXI is to go by, this is how Suika feels about Reimu and will not tolerate any harm to her.
** In 20XXII, we have Mokou who felt that way towards Keine and later on Reimu and, apparently, Kaguya.
* BittersweetEnding: Gensokyo 20XX ends this way
** Gensokyo 20XXII ends on this note in that they are still discriminated against, however, they were offered a new home.
* BloodFromTheMouth: In 20XX, Reimu developed this when her health went downhill.
** In Gensokyo 20XXI, Yukari had this at some point, getting better after being released from the cellar.
*** Sanae also became this and, true to most examples of this trope, she died later of causes undetermined.
* BreakTheCutie:
** In Gensokyo 20XX, Reimu when the stress of waiting for Yukari takes a toll on her health, mind, and well-being and again, in 20XXI, after being age regressed to a toddler, when Yukari is locked down in the cellar and Chen goes to be with her.
** Yukari was this when she went insane from all of the stress and worry
** As was Eirin, leading her to commit suicide.
** Now, Yuuka, the most optimistic of the group, is broken, causing her to leave Chen in a thicket and never return
** In chapter 12 of 20XXII, Nitori is broken and attempts suicide but, with Satori's help, she gets better.
* CallBack:
** The ending in Yukari's narration to Gensokyo 20XXII mirrors what Chen said in chapter 53 of Gensokyo 20XXI.
** Satori mentioned on writing a book, in the end they are reading the book she wrote.
* CessationOfExistence: In 20XXI, apparently this is what Kanako does after Sanae dies, as it is mentioned she didn't really die, per se.
* DeniedFoodAsPunishment:
** In Gensokyo 20XX, when it is told from Yukari's POV, she mentioned that their captors sometimes "forgot" to feed them.
** Again, in chapter 57 of Gensokyo 20XXI, because of what Suika did, which was hurling food onto the floor and into the wall, Koishi said, "Great, now we're not going to get food tomorrow." and it turns out she was right, they didn't get any food next day afterwards.
* DespairEventHorizon: After not being able to find Ran, Chen, and Flandre and while figuring that Reimu died in the time her absence, Yukari crossed this.
* DogFoodDiet: In chapter 23 of Gensokyo 20XXII, Ran notes that their captors switched to feeding them this. Frankly, they don't really find very much more appealing, rather it is a step up from what they being fed before.
* DiseaseBleach: Reimu had this in 20XX, when her health went downhill. At first, it was dyed but then, as her health had took a turn for the worse, it turned white and never went back.
** In Gensokyo 20XXI, Yukari has this when she reaches her DespairEventHorizon.
* DisproportionateRetribution: In Gensokyo 20XXII Ran was scalded with some kind of liquid (hinted at to be either acid or very hot water) for snooping through papers and was left with severe burns, resulting scars after she healed. That is a pure testament to how brutal their captors are.
* DrivenToSuicide:
** In the Gensokyo 20XXI, Eirin for reasons mostly unsaid, besides, "Is it wrong to want to feel death, even though if one cannot experience it?" , though it is hinted to be from the stress and uncertainty of their situation and, possibly, depression. Though, besides the aforementioned, she might have also killed herself as a way of escaping potential capture.
** In Chapter 12 of 20XXII, Nitori attempts this and fails but, with Satori's help, she gets better.
* DyeOrDie: In Gensokyo 20XXI, Ran, Chen, Flan, Reimu, Yukari, and most of everyone else.
* FatBastard: In Gensokyo 20XXII, the warden is described as this by Kaguya, as she describes him as being a "fat disgusting bastard" and "fat ass" during chapter 35.
* FearlessInfant: In 20XXII, Reimu, being age-regressed to a toddler, but Mokou thinks she is brainwashed. Apparently, Mokou is correct because it is made note that Reimu, after being injected with tranquilizers every three hours for screaming, would have cried or scream the guards presence and respond to screams, knowing what to associate either with, but instead didn't.
* FountainOfYouth: In 20XXI, Reimu was age regressed to toddler due to Ran placing her under a hibernation spell (similar to sleeping beauty) that was stronger and had other effects than was expected.
* FriendToAllChildren: In 20XXI, Yuuka, to some extent, trying to provide some sort of nanny figure to Reimu, Chen, and then Rumia
* FromBadToWorse: Both starts out this way but the only difference between 20XX and 20XXI is that times are getting so bad in 20XXI is that there may not be a chance for escape.
*** Then there is 20XXII and stuff starts to get worse there
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: In Gensokyo 20XXII, Mokou's a smoker, and with Kaguya's help, tried to break the others out and naturally allies herself with the others that were captured.
* GoOutWithASmile: Eirin does when to informed that she is actually dying, permanently.
* Hammerspace: In 20XXII, we have between Kaguya's butt cheeks, a form of hammerspace, and the items she do have hidden there is a machine gun and a tanto.
* HellIsThatNoise: Yukari's Screams in chapter 15 in Gensokyo 20XXII and chapters 17 and 18 of Gensokyo 20XXI.
* HeroicBSOD: In 20XXII, Ran started to go into one after she finds out her pup is dead.
* HoneyTrap: See the ScarpiaUltimatum below, Yukari did state that if, she isn't given much of a choice, she would use herself as a way of extracting information she needs.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: From the sequel, Ran gives this to Eirin regarding Reimu:
--->"If Reimu dies, your ass is grass and I will....mow...it!"
%%** Chen also does this later on.
** In 20XXII, Ran gives one to Satori and Koishi should they tell about her snooping through the files.
--->"If you dare tell anyone about what you just saw, I will kick both of your asses and tie you into one great big knot until your bodies merge and become so intertwined that you'll become one colossal freak of nature."
* ImNotHungry: In Gensokyo 20XXI, after they've been imprisoned, Suika refuses to eat and throws it on the floor, apparently satisfied. According to her, it was crap (it is described as being "slop" by Yuuka, meaning it doesn't look at all appealing to eat) and that was why she didn't eat it. However, that seems to imply she didn't eat it because she caught onto something the others didn't.
* ImprobableInfantSurvival:
** An age regressed Reimu lives, despite taking a fall that will have otherwise killed her (it rendered her crippled, though).
** Most of Team ⑨ save Rumia has been killed.
** Chen also survives but was blinded.
* IWantGrandkids: Yukari described herself as more or less this after Ran becomes pregnant and has babies.
* IWillWaitForYou: A non-romantic and non-animal variant. Reimu in Gensokyo 20XX, while waiting for her maternal figure Yukari to be reunited with her in the Outside World. Like most examples, she nearly dies, as the stress of doing so and the hell of their situation ultimately took a wrong toll on her health. She does it again in 20XXII and, again, nearly dies, only of starvation. Fortunately, Ran placed her under a hibernation spell until Yukari returns.
%%* KillTheCutie: Happens in the first, second, and third of Gensokyo 20XX
* LastOfHisKind: Rumia is the last of Team ⑨
* LawOfInverseFertility: Ran became pregnant by a kitsune she met in the sequel, whereas Yukari is infertile. Ran thought Yukari would envy that she became pregnant and Yukari could not.
* LonelyTogether: In Gensokyo 20XXI in Chapter 53, Chen, Rumia, and Eirin's ghost in the house that Chen, Ran, Reimu, Flandre, and Yukari had to flee from.
* MadnessMantra: In the final chapters of 20XXI and the beginning of 20XXII, Yuuka's was apparently, "Never again, never again, never again." when she was in inherent denial of situation and out of fear of what could happen.
%%* MadWomanInTheAttic: A variation of this occurs to Yukari when she goes insane, she gets better.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In Gensokyo 20XXI: Kanako has this when she feels her beatings of Sanae contributed to her death.
** Ran also has one when Reimu's legs became paralyzed and is apparently still regretful over what had happened.
* MortonsFork: Played with and played straight, though being a bit reconstructed, in Gensokyo 20XXI in two instances. One is where Yukari had to leave Reimu behind to ensure her safety but, as we could see, leaving her behind ensured she could have and was virtually dying of starvation and freezing. This is summarized in Ran's narration (from Chapter 11) below:
--->She also explained that Yukari had yet to return and that she had to be left behind as her survival or safety could not be guaranteed. Nevertheless, leaving her here didn't guarantee her survival either, rather, despite the large amount of radishes, Reimu was starving, as well as freezing, which had compelled her to stay wrapped up in those blankets and surviving off of her body fat, thus she was virtually dying.
** Also from Chapter 11, Ran thinks of the idea to take Reimu to the hospital but acknowledges that doing so could A) lead them to be captured for being youkai and B) the cold could kill her A hospital is a considerable long ways off from where they are, so death from hypothermia wouldn't be outside of that realm of possibility, so Ran decides to take a third option and place Reimu under a hibernation spell that will not be broken until Yukari returns.
*** This was discussed in chapter 23 of 20XXII and was alluded to as a possibility as to why Reimu was returned but Yume wasn't
---> Mokou: "I was thinkin's that maybe they were forcing Yukari to make a choice like that, ya know, which one's to live and which one to die and what it would be like to be in that place with choices ya can't really make. If ya ask me, it would be pure hell and betrayal all the way. That must be the place that Yukari is in."
* NeverSayDie: Usually played with. In some cases, euphemisms for being dead like "Amongst the stars" for example are used but, in other cases they actually say die or passed away.
* NobleShoplifter: In 20XXI, Ran had to become this and a justified criminal as she had to loot money off corpses and steal food but leave the money she looted behind.
* NoodleIncident: According to Yuuka, in Chapter 21 of Gensokyo 20XXI, there was something between her, Eirin, Tewi, a prank, and some kind of narcotics. As she put it, she got the wrong prescription.
** In Gensokyo 20XXII, Kaguya messing up the plan to bust out the others with Mokou and how it lead to them being captured. We never actually find out what she did to mess it up and how it got them captured.
** From Chapter 25, we have the time where Koishi hid something and let's just say we would much rather not find out the end result.
** From chapter 35, we find out that Kaguya hit Mokou with her big shoe, giving her a concussion, and the incident went something on the lines of "it was about the last beer and my hand was forced".
--->Kaguya: I knocked Mokou out with it once and she got a concussion, let's just say, it was about the last beer and my hand was forced.
*** From Chapter 40, we never figure out what Kaguya did to break her foot besides what she did afterwards and that it concerned her not setting the bones correctly, allowing it to improperly heal, requiring her to need her large shoe for said foot.
* NoodleImplements: Kaguya and Mokou's plan to bust the others out involved gasoline, a box of cigarettes, a rock, a can of hairspray, bug repellent, a wire, an empty can, some shredded playing cards, a bottle of pee, and some dynamite.
** For some reason, Kaguya has a tanto hidden between her butt cheeks.
* NoNameGiven: Ran's babies and kitsune she fell in love with weren't given any names. It turns out that Ran's babies do have names but so far only one has been revealed and that is Yume.
*** Also the warden.
* NotQuiteTheRightThing: Played around with most of Yukari's choices.
** From 20XXI, we have the instance Chen was blinded by a well-intentioned stranger who didn't wish to turn her into the youkai hunters, figuring that, if she was blind, then they will not go after her but that put her at the mercy of otherwise seen dangers that she could have avoided. This is virtually summed up in this quote from Chapter 15:
--->Blinding her, well-intentioned in motives? Yes. Foolish? Most definitely.
* EvenTheRatsWontTouchIt: In Gensokyo 20XXII, chapter 16, the food is described by Yuuka this way to Mokou and Kaguya when Mokou turns up her nose at it.
* ParentalNeglect: How Reimu lost the use of her legs to a fall and that happened when Ran, usually kind and caring, became, as she described, a "heartless selfish bitch of a kitsune" became negligent and resentful of her, becoming repentant of this later. Granted, she isn't her parent but she still counts in that she was Reimu's caregiver at the time.
* ParentalSubstitute: Yukari and Ran are this to Reimu, Flan, and Chen, Yuuka is this to Rumia, and Aya, later on, Yuyuko become this for Chen and Rumia.
* PrecisionFStrike: From Gensokyo 20XXI, Chen's "Your ass is fucking grass if you put her back down in that cellar!"
* ProperLady: Even when times are extremely rough and the odds are being stacked against them, Yuuka still insists on being this, even when she is revealed to be captured towards the end of 20XXII. Of course,in 20XXII, she has a reason to be, as she is fearing her life. When she hears about what happened to Reimu and Ran's surviving pup, she decides to drop the act.
* RapeAsDrama / RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: Implied but not stated. Besides the fact that Yukari is implied to have performed the ScarpiaUltimatum (see below) and the others saying what he does to her is horrible, it can be viewed as this.
** Amoridere spoiler: confirmed that Yukari was indeed raped by the warden but couldn't outright describe it nor state it because of site regulations, so she used subtleties to get around talking about it directly and left it implied
* ReducedToRatburgers: In the 20XXI, in order to conserve bought food, Chen comes up with the thought of eating rats, mice, and little birds and the chapter in which she brought up the idea is titled "Ratburgers".
* SadisticChoice: Analyzed and discussed in 20XXII, Chapter 18: Mokou's Question, Morton's Fork, and Sadistic Choice
*** Was discussed further discussed in chapter 23 of 20XXII and was alluded to as a possibility as to why Reimu was returned but Yume wasn't.
* ScarpiaUltimatum: Played with but implied. If chapter 4 of Gensokyo 20XXII is to be believed, it is implied that, if she had to, Yukari would perform this as an effort of extracting information from the warden to help the others, as she is the warden's favorite and the warden is infatuated with her. Later on, it becomes apparent that she is likely doing so to ensure none of those close to her are executed and has far worse done to them. Either way, we never find out.
* SnowMeansDeath: In the sequel, Flandre dies of hypothermia while looking for Chen (who had run away) and, later on, Eirin commits suicide in the winter.
* SoapOperaDisease: In 20XXII, Keine was mentioned to have died of "pneumonia and lumps in her lungs". We never get a precise cause or source of either of the two but we do know it was terminal.
* StarsAreSouls: Yukari notes that they are the souls of those lost and identifies which stars are who in chapter 36 of Gensokyo 20XXI
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: After being introduced in 20XXI, Ran's pups and two die not too long after being separated from her and the sole surviving one of that litter, Yume, dies and is cremated, some of her hairs and bone fragments surviving the fire. Then again, given the nature of the fic, its probably justified.
* SurprisePregnancy: In 20XXI, Ran becomes pregnant and, at first, think she is getting fat. After awhile, she realizes she is.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: In 20XXII, Yuuka, at first, coming up with the theory that its just sociegenic illness and that everyone (but her) has gone insane as the cause of their behavior. Justified as, she was afraid for her life and didn't want to face the truth.
* Tears of Blood: In chapter 52, Yukari cries this when she's reached another DespairEventHorizon.
* TheGhost: The warden is very seldom seen and is mostly mentioned, though Kaguya has seen him and, apparently, sees him a lot, as she has to serve his food and watch him eat (so she won't make two trips) and describes him as, well, a FatBastard. Aside from Kaguya's encounters with him, he is mostly mentioned.
** Satori has also seen him briefly early on and that marked the time when innocence was lost.
* TheAlcoholic: Suika, obviously, though she hates being alone more so than being sober
** The FatBastard Warden and his mooks in 20XXII are described as enjoying beer.
* TheConfidant: In 20XXII, everyone basically is this with each other, especially when Suika urinates in the mop-water making mustard gas, but, again, the one who plays this role is Satori.
* TheNicknamer:
%%** Apparently, Mokou, to a low extent, in Gensokyo 20XXII.
%%** Before she died in 20XXI, there was Flandre, having the mentality of a five-year old.
** Yuuka does occasionally refer to Ran to as "Ducksie" and generally everyone as "dear" or "sweetheart".
* TheDiseaseThatShallNotBeNamed: In 20XXII, apparently Keine's but, then again, we don't know precisely what it is she was afflicted with besides the symptoms being pneumonia and lumps in her lungs and the fact that it is mentioned as being terminal.
* ThePurge: Happens at the beginning of Gensokyo 20XX: Rise of Earth and anyone of Gensokyo that resisted were met with death. Also, the invaders were exterminating youkai left and right for their power and magic.
* TimeStandsStill: Subverted, time is going on as it would, as Chen, being blind notes how much time has past and precisely what season it is (once she noted it was spring and another time she noted it was summer) but for in the prison, being that there is an absence of clocks and calendars, as noted in 20XXI (Yukari stated that there were an absence of clocks and windows and made note how she is losing her sense of time), it has, as they really don't know what day, week, and month it is, though Kaguya and Mokou apparently have a clue what time it might be as, Mokou seems to know what day Keine passed away on and Kaguya recently found out it was June 25.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Subverted in Kaguya's case, in that it isn't her cleavage she's concealing a knife in, instead, it is between her butt cheeks but played straight in Mokou's case, in that she carries her cigarettes in her bra.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
** Yuuka and Eirin are more less this, as they do spend a bit of time being subtly hostile to each other but are nonetheless on good terms and they do care for each other.
** In 20XXII, we have Kaguya and Mokou. Confirmed that they are roommates.
* WideEyedIdealist: Played with in 20XXI. Yuuka is fairly optimistic about things turning out for the better, though, she knows things really won't but is determined to put her best face forward for the children's sake. Eventually, she couldn't hold this facade for long.
* WouldHurtAChild: It is demonstrated in 20XXII that their captors have no qualms against harming children, as Reimu, a small child, was doped up with tranquilizers every few hours and two of Ran's babies died not too long after being separated from her. Later on, the final one, Yume, died of causes undetermined. As Ran put it, Reimu and her little pup were no safer than the others were.
* YouAreWorthHell:
** In chapter 43 of Gensokyo 20XXII, Kaguya's reason for not escaping when given the chance, stating she couldn't stand freedom if it meant being alone and leaving behind Mokou, her sister.
** In general, this is Yukari's reason for some of her decisions she makes (namely, choosing to be "the warden's lover"), especially in 20XXII.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: In the first one, Gensokyo has been destroyed and, in the sequel, the reason they can't is because they might be captured for being Youkai

!!Life in Gensokyo Village

* BreadEggsBreadedEggs: Reimu's "shit, fuck, and shitfucker"
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Played with to a fair degree with Reimu and Chen. Reimu due to being age-regressed to a toddler and Chen, naturally, being a the mental-equivalent of a human child, has fluctuating maturity, and knows what some words mean but doesn't know what other words means but is also naive to what infertility is.
** On that note, Reimu apparently picked up swear words and the ones she had learned were "nuts cut", "shit", "fuck", "shitfucker", "smoo", " asshole", "fat ass" and more recently, "bitches" and has no clue what they mean but obviously think they are fun to say and even arrange them in a little song. In Chapter 4, Ran's beloved clearly states children are innocent and finds her funny when she says bad words.
* DefiledForever: Yukari believes herself to be undesirable under one of three reasons, this being the one of them.
* GroinAttack: In Chapter one, Chen states that Yukari threatened to do this (specifically, he'll get his nuts cut) if Ran's new lover breaks her heart or doesn't marry her.
* If You Ever Do Anything To Hurt Her: Yukari stated that should Ran's lover breaks her heart or doesn't marry her, he's going to get his nuts cut.
* ImNotPretty: A metaphorical variant. Yukari doesn't believe she's is desirable on the grounds of her age (she would be about 1,2003 if the passage of time is to go by), the fact that she is barren, and the fact that she is "soiled".
* InformedFlaw: According to Chen, in chapter 1, Suika calls Yukari this because, was, at the time, a bit lazy and would eat a bit before hibernation, even though, aside from that, Yukari wasn't fat. Then again, as Chen mentioned, she also calls Yuyuko that and Yuyuko is fat (fat enough to take up five seats at the movie theatre)
* InsultOfEndearment: Suika referring to Yukari as "fat ass" and she in turn, at some point, referring to Suika as "LadyDrunk"
* InnocentSwearing: Reimu, again, being age-regressed to a toddler
* MamaBear: A pregnant Ran, in chapter 10, stating that if Yukari and Reimu's birth-mother were to quarrel over who can have Reimu that she was to take Chen and Reimu and stay somewhere else.
* MayflyDecemberRomance/ WeAreAsMayflies: Yukari states that she cannot remember whether or not she's fallen in love and states that if she had, she may have outlived him or he may have rejected her. Justified, she is a youkai and Youkai tend to live a long time.
* MultigenerationalHousehold: We have this with Yukari, the oldest, Ran, second oldest, Chen, middle, and Reimu, very youngest.
%%* NoNameGiven: Ran's lover and, later on, Reimu's mother
* OldMaid: Yukari initially believes this as herself. Also, justified, as she's a youkai and has lived a long time, so by human standards, she would be very old.
* SliceOfLife: To an extent.
* TrueBeautyIsOnTheInside: Ran's lover adores her, despite her scars, something that put the other kitsune off, and Ran adores him in return, despite him being minus three tails and having a messed up foot.
** In Yukari's sense of beauty (beauty as in not having any flaws), she doubt she'll find love regardless based on a few of her flaws but Suika reassures her otherwise.
-->Suika: Aw, shucks, even if you are soiled, barren, and is old, someone will still find you to be the prettiest in the whole wide world. I mean, look at Ran, she's scarred up and has endured hardship but there is a kitsune that loves her and finds her to be seductive. Them other kitsune are shallow but, not this one, and he is adorable. You're beautiful, fat ass, and someone will think so, too.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Yukari lays one into Reimu's mother in Chapter 11.
--> Yukari: Listen, in some time, you may not care about this anymore so I'm just going to say what I have to say. Listen to me, I've always wanted to raise a family, to bear children of my own, but I CAN'T bear children and knowing I can't is something that has tortured me inside for a long time and it still does, rubbing salt even further in the wounds that already cannot heal. You bitch, I resent you deeply for reminding me of that and wanting the child you brought into this world back after you chose to give to someone else to play mother to and for squandering a gift that my own body denies me. If Reimu rejected you, then I'm sorry but you had it coming and it isn't like you didn't deserve it for being absent from her life from that period. If it weren't in Reimu's best interests for her to go back with you then I would have kept her and she was so happy with me.
* VitriolicBestBuds: To an extent, Yukari and Suika

!!Gensokyo 20XXIII
[[folder: Gensokyo [=20XXIII=]]]
* AffectionateNickname: Shinmyoumaru is called "Shimmy" by Yuuka and Amoridere. In Amoridere's case, it is because she tends to find Shimmy's real name hard to spell.
* BecauseYouCanCope: An Inversion, as this is self imposed in Yukari's case. She opts to go without food as an effort to conserve food rations, stating she is used to it.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Chen and Reimu, again, like always. Reimu has no clue on what is going on (she is noted as being oblivious to the least and confused at the most) and Chen pretty much knows there is a war going on but doesn't understand why Ran would be against building an inner core or refuge as a part of their preparations.
** Also, in Chapter 12, Reimu is also oblivious to what had happened, though that part is Justified, as she was asleep when the bomb was dropped, and, according to Yuuka, during a meeting, she didn't seem to fathom that Tewi was injured but seemed to know that Tewi needed to be clung to.
* ClusterFBomb: Yuyuko apparently, as she seems to use the F-word so many times.
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: Inverted. Yuyuko never at all fails to mention that Seija wouldn't have eaten half of the food and used half of their water supply if Yuuka simply allowed her to kill her, eliminating the problem right then and there. Of course, she right. What makes this particularly worse is that reason for very little food and water later is because Seija was allowed to live.
* ImColdSoCold: A subversion in that this before she dies, however, in her diary, Eirin described herself as feeling even colder than the winter and even colder than death.
* DyingAlone: When Yukari vanishes without telling anyone, their prompt assumption is that she left to die alone, so she'd be one less mouth to feed when food was going scarce.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Seija Kijin, better known as Seija the Motherfucker.
* FateWorseThanDeath: It has been noted at a few points that those that are dead are in a better place because no one would want to be alive during the aftermath of a nuclear war.
* FearlessInfant: Reimu, again, and this time it is further touched upon that it isn't just fear she was conditioned not to have, it was her sense of danger. When the bombs are dropped, she remains asleep
* ForegoneConclusion: The fact that is during a nuclear war and its aftermath, life is not too good for the characters
* Foreshadowing: Ran told Chen a reason as to why an inner core or shelter wouldn't work and states it is because doing something like that would get Chen pinned under a roof beam. Later on, after the nukes are dropped, Chen is found pinned under roof beam, crushed under her inner core or refuge. She survives, however.
** In Chapter 19, where Yuyuko says, "I know one thing, Seija will do something that will get her punished once and for all." She couldn't be more right and Seija did get punished.
* GoodbyeCruelWorld: They find Eirin's diary contains her suicide note and find out her reasons for suicide. It's pretty sad.
* ImprobableInfantSurvival: Reimu, Chen, three of Ran's babies, and Shinmyoumaru "Shimmy" Sukuna survive when the bombs are dropped.
* ImNotHungry: Subverted and Reconstructed. Yukari refuses food to conserve food rations, stating she can go without and is used to doing so, rather than being imprisoned.
%%* Jerkass: Seija, aptly called Seija the Motherfucker
* JerkassHasAPoint: Invoked. Seija tried to have Yukari kill the kids because SHE saw them as a hindrance and it's made note of the fact that she's eaten half of their food and used up half of their water making survival even harder for the rest of them, thus making the children a hindrance when they weren't from the start.
* KarmaHoudini: In chapter 15, Seija eats half of their food supply and uses half of their water supply to bathe, yet, she receives no punishment for it. Averted five chapters later after crossing the line, she is punished in a the harshest way there most possibly can be and that was by having her limbs cut off and having her gapped far enough away
* MamaBear: Mentally unstable or otherwise, Yukari will indeed try to kill you if try to use her love for the children she cares about against her and manipulate it to get her to off the offspring
* ManipulativeBastard: Seija and it backfires hard!
* NoodleIncident: Averted. According to Yuyuko, she cut off the electricity to the whole building, kicked a hole in the wall, and threw the television out of the window while they were watching it.
** Played straight in Chapter 20, when Yuyuko mentions that Seija did some pretty messed up shit like causing a car accident, leaving that entire road a blood bath, that one time she caused like over six people to fall off of a bridge, and that one time she blew up some gas stations. We do not know what she did to cause all of that but, knowing Seija, it is best we don't find out
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When Yukari leaves without telling, it is made note of how worrying that is because usually unlike her to do so, as she would usually be sticking around to suffer with them and or for them and, that if she did leave, she will have told someone and, if she had wandered off, being so mentally unstable, they would have found her. Naturally, their prompt assumption is that she left to die so she would be one less mouth to feed when food is so scarce.
* PrematurelyBald: Sakuya starts to lose her hair after the bomb drops. According to Amoridere, it could be either stress or radiation sickness.
* SadisticChoice: Somewhat. Ran is deciding on how to go about eating when there are more than her mouth to feed. How this is played about is that she needs to eat in order conserve her milk supply in order to feed her babies (which are apparently newborns) but, all the while, Reimu and Chen have to eat. She notes that she envies Yukari for not having that sort of dilemma.
* SecretDiary: Patchouli and Nitori stumbleupon Eirin's diary in chapter 4. They find it also contained her suicide note.
* TheUnintelligible: Played with. Reimu to some extent being that she is still learning how to talk.
* TooDumbToLive: Seija. She decides to try and get an already mentally unstable Yukari to kill the children she loves just because she sees them as a hindrance, not at all thinking that Yukari would turn the tables and nearly kill her by smothering her with a pillow.
* WorldWarThree: Building up to this, later on confirmed that it is, only the nukes haven't been dropped yet. The nukes were dropped in Chapter 10
* YouNoTakeCandle / HulkSpeak: Not seen yet but Amoridere stated that, besides the swear words she's learned and a few sentences she can string up, the number of comprehensible sentences being three (the other ones are one to two word utterances here and there), Reimu mostly communicates on a level a rehabilitated feral child might. Eventually, we read how Reimu speaks in chapter 8, when Reimu protests eating bland soup (the reason they eat it is to conserve their tasty food) and the YouNoTakeCandle and the HulkSpeak tropes combined comes into play when Reimu says, "No, I no want.", which would be a fourth sentence she can and does say, after she says, "No!", which is an utterance. The third thing she says is, "Nnn~!", again, while protesting, though the, "Nnn~!" is apparently a noise she makes in protest, suggesting that she also communicates in noises as well. Amoridere confirmed that Reimu was still learning how to communicate and her vocabulary is growing in a very steady but slow pace.
* WideEyedIdealist: Sakuya slides in and out of this.

* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Chen gives one to Miko
--->Chen: Is that what you want, to be quiet and act like everything is fine, while you stagger around in darkness, living in misery and sadness?
** Also Mokou's question:
--->"So lemme axe ya a questions, why the hell is it you're a bitch?!"
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Averted in that Ran's attempted suicides by slitting her wrists failed on the grounds she did so in the snow, the cold from which made the vessels pull back and the blood to clot, and that she didn't perform it correctly (she likely tried cutting straight horizontally rather than zig-zagged vertically and or she probably wasn't cutting in a way in which that hit the major arteries).
%%* AttemptedRape: This happens to Ran during a blizzard
%%* BreakTheCutie: This happens to Ran.
** Chen went through this and would later be DrivenToSuicide in chapter 60
** Hard to say, but it seems Reimu has gone through this. It wasn't obvious
* BackFromTheDead: Marisa, Flandre, Sakuya, Remilia, Sanae, Alice, and Cirno through Yukari bending some of the borders of time to bring them to future, ergo erasing their deaths from time.
** Also Youmu and Suwako in chapter 56.
* BungledSuicide: Ran's suicide by slitting her wrists attempts all fail because A)she wasn't cutting in a way that hit major arteries or was cutting incorrectly and B) she attempted this sort of thing in the snow, which caused her blood to clot and the blood vessels to pull back.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: This pretty much pushes Chen into a BreakTheCutie moment as she doesn't understand why Ran is in her apathetic state and this can't be helped as no one will tell her. Reimu, on the other hand remains oblivious.
* ComicBookTime: Apparently and as we can see, time has passed since the war that brought a nuclear winter and it was that they had just taken notice of it, as Ran noted Reimu, Maribel, and Renko had grown and that Yume Ni had to have been older than two or three, also, in the same vein, Yuyuko did note that Anohana would have to be at least one or two at the time of her narration.
* DrivenToSuicide:
** Ran in chapter 9, after a near-miss with a rogue male kitsune. According to Mokou, she's attempted suicide more than twice by slitting her wrists. She fails at it nonetheless.
** Chen in chapter 60 by attempting to drown herself, that of which she gave no motives for and probably can't on the grounds that brain damage from said failed suicide attempt, rendering her unable to talk, however, it is known that she wanted her mom back and had given up on life, which would be as far as motives go. Two chapters later, she does seem to have her motives somewhat explained in her suicide note.
* ElephantInTheLivingRoom: Kosuzu addresses some of the things they don't like to talk about as this but it is more apparent when she addresses why Reimu can't walk, to which Chen answered, "We don't talk or think about that and neither should you."
* EndlessWinter: The story takes place in this which lasts for about five years, eventually ending in the final chapter.
* EvenTheRatsWontTouchIt: Yuuka seems to regard the rice cakes that Ran keeps eating as this.
-->Yuuka: Perhaps it is a nutrition deficiency, yes, after all, she's really eaten nothing but those confounded dry chalky rice cakes and those are anything short of nutritiously adequate.
* FearlessInfant: A variant. Ran makes note of how small children Reimu, Maribel, and Renko would be traumatized by what had happened but ultimately are ultimately unfazed.
* FreudianExcuse: From what we can see and due to some of her experiences, Ran has some underlying mental issues that she tried to seal away and, after being raped, things hit the fan and she became "Bitch Ran".
* HappyEnding: The Final Chapter, which ends with the nuclear winter ending and life getting somewhat normal. According to Reimu (still a child), they own an apartment building and that Chen can talk again. This also implies that eventually she recovered from her some of her mental scars.
* HatesBeingTouched: Ran, after she was raped (which is TruthInTelevision by the way), and it was to such an extreme that she almost put a small child through a wall. It was noted that in the aftermath of Yukari's experiences during imprisonment, that, at first, she didn't liked to be touched, preferring to limit if she wasn't going to not be touched but her behavior was comparatively different than Ran's, in that she behaved more like an autistic child would stiffen or push the person away, rarely if ever accepting it without feeling obligated or trying to imagine something else. However, it was noted that she had weakened vision at time, thus it would make more sense as she would startle easily.
* HistoryRepeats: Chen's suicide attempt in chapter 60 vaguely mimicked one of Ran's suicide attempts, only, Chen was noted to have cried out but Reimu didn't.
* ImprobableInfantSurvival: Yukari finds a young Maribel and Renko in a devastated Tokyo and apparently they were the only two survivors there.
%%* KillTheCutie: Sakuya
* LetThemDieHappy: Yuuka decides it would be best for Sakuya if she let her believe the emergency services were coming even though they weren't and, as she is dying, Yuuka tells Sakuya everything she'd like to hear.
* MotorMouth: Mokou in chapter 32
-->Mokou (Huzi): So, anyway, we went to go get justice for Chen but I knew what we was doin' was gonna get us in a whole heap o' trouble there isn't words for but I didn't stop her because I couldn't tell her any different so we went to do it and did it and them kitsune declared war and said they was gonna burn the house down and are comin' here with torches and shit and is really gonna burn the house down to kill you guys and beat the hell out of us and raise hell and some other stuff but that is beside the point and we gotta pack up and leave before they do that and they won't stop until we leaves and gets the hell out of here 'cause a whole lotta shit has hit the fan.
* NoodleIncident: One that was mentioned was the thing with the hole in the roof.
* ParentalAbandonment: Maribel and Renko. As Ran asked in her narration, what the hell happened to their parents?! We never do find out but it is likely they had died some time when the nukes were dropped.
* SecretlyDying: It's unknown if Sakuya was denying that she was actually dying or if she really was unaware that she was.
* SnowMeansDeath: Sakuya dies during the nuclear winter of radiation sickness.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Chen laid a huge one into Miko for the latter attempting to hid her blindness and telling her to keep quiet about it.
-->Chen: YOU CAN SUCK MY ASS!! You have to tell someone that you are going blind and yet you won't, pretending everything's fine, when it isn't. I can't even use my left arm and leg and I go to the potty in a diaper but you don't see me pretending everything is the same and I know it isn't! Tell someone that you are going blind! You told me but why not them? They care about you, too, and yet you're pretending nothing is wrong, making everyone scared. You tell me to be quiet about it but, you know what? Being quiet won't do any good, this is something you have to tell about and you want to be quiet! Hell no! It won't do any good to be quiet because what is in the dark will come to light! Is that what you want, to be quiet and act like everything is fine,while you stagger around in darkness, living in misery and sadness? If you want to be quiet, fine, suck my ass and live in the misery and darkness that will soon be your life, the life you won't let anyone be the light to.
** Mokou later gives one to Ran for her bitchy behavior.
--->Mokou: "Am I gonna get hit? Okay, hit me! It won't change the fact that you're a bitch who's started to take her problems out on everyone else. Yeah, you've gone through hell, we all have, and Yukari, also known as Tosca has gone through what you've gone through, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, and, yet, she didn't turn into anything like you, BITCH! Now, before you think of sayin' anything, shut the hell up, mmkay. It's not the fact that you don't like to be touched, that of which almost caused you to be a small child through the wall, or the trauma you went through, which had to have been brutal, trust me, I know, it's the fact that you have other underlying problems that you've tried to shove away and would have done so if the box that is the deepest recesses of your being wasn't already full. Yeah, I can understand that you can and have to heal but that doesn't give you a reason be bitchy and damn near negligent. No, your fiancé, who I should note is extremely nice, doesn't want that from you and doesn't even bring it up but Chen wants her mom back and says she wants her to love her again. Not cool, as she's given up on life. Hell, you almost put a small child, Reimu, through a wall because she grabbed onto you, somethin' that she does when she wants to be held. Lemme axe ya' a questions, what the hell is ya' problem? The problem is with you is that you have never at all bothered to to talk about your problems to those who care and when they do show ya' some interests, you are quick to say, "Oh, it's fine." or push them away, much like you're doing now. So lemme axe ya a questions, why the hell is it you're a bitch?!"
* SiblingRivalry: Somewhat and Downplayed, in they are not her siblings, aside from Yume Ni and Anohana, but Chen notes she doesn't want to share Ran because she already has to.
* TimeDelayedDeath: Sakuya's death of radiation sickness.
%%* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: Mokou in chapter 60
%%* WhamEpisode: Chapter 60.
* WildChild: Ran notes that children normally living in Maribel and Renko's situation would become either this or something almost like Reimu, who is more or less this and the level to whom they communicate more or less on (they speak like she would, having no real grammatical sense that a three year old might but, otherwise, they have a more expanded vocabulary than Reimu does)
* WideEyedIdealist: Sakuya is this even more so up until she dies. Actually, it seems, she didn't know she was even dying, then again, it is left whether or not she really knew she was dying or was in utter denial about it.

* AnAesop: In chapter 33, Sakuya learns a little something about Reimu and that she should try seeing Reimu for herself, instead of her disability, which is exactly the intention: See people for as they are instead of only their disabilities.
--->Ran: Look, there's Chen. We know she requires a wheelchair to get around but we see her, Chen, not her wheelchair. Yes, Reimu has poor sight, of course, but we must learn to see her, Reimu, and not her blindness. Now, I'm not saying it was right for her to call out your answer and neither was it wrong but it is her way of saying she learns just the way you do and she only wanted to play along with everyone.
** From chapter 59: On the note, you readers, you! When you or someone else is being picked on by your own Yu the bullies, tell someone who can and will help you ad get the the problem resolved then and there, also, when you see and know someone is being bullied, stand up and stick together against the bully, don't be a bystander, stand up and stick together, don't do what we did!
** In chapter 60, we get the message, "It's okay to grieve but, someday, we'll all have to move on and cannot spend our lives wallowing in it forever."
** In chapter 64 we get a couple about relationships:
--->Ren: Sex is not a good reason to marry someone unpleasant, no matter how good it is, and that and those sort and sorts of thinking and relationships will only lead to woe.
** And:
---> Ren: If love and devotions are your reasons to marry her, then, well, you will find happiness as well.
* ADogNamedDog: Yukari's pug is simply called "Pug".
* AddledAddict: Mokou seems to be sliding between this and a FunctionalAddict, though she is more addled than she would functional.
* ApocalypseAnarchy: A downplayed type two variant, in that there is no government and no rules after the nuclear war and then winter but it does seem to be a somewhat fairly functional society, despite not having either, making it not total chaos.
* AnarchyIsChaos: Kind of, in that it seems fairly functional as a society but it is stressed that people can, will, and do behave without restraint. According to Amoridere, it's almost like living in a tough neighborhood, which is neither total chaos and nor is it entirely safe to live there, as people will and, sometimes, do act without any sort of restraint in either of those cases, except there are no rules or government in the latter.
-->Amoridere: It's kinda like living in a tough neighborhood, except there aren't any rules, as people in an anarchy tend to act without any sort of restraint and people do have to protect themselves from those that do just as they would in a tough neighborhood, on the other hand, it isn't total chaos, despite the fact there are no rules.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Yukari, if her narration of the first chapter is to go by.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Chen wished for Yume Ni to suffer and she did,...through long term illness, the which of she died.
* BlownAcrossTheRoom: More like Blown Across the Hall, Mokou was thrown across the hall when her meth-lab exploded.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Lampshaded on BlueAndOrangeMorality trope. Ran actually notes a realistic variant in that children think what they do is right, while, to adults, it is wrong, being they are innocent and ignorant to what sort of dangers there are and explains why they need to be guided, as well as the fact they must be protected from their own madness that their innocence will push them into.
** Then there is Reimu, who, like most children, wants to do what she wants to do and will do it if left unrestrained, however, she is naive as to why she isn't allowed to put her hands into hot food, however, this cannot be helped as they cannot tell her why she can't besides "Ran will get mad" or something to that effect. Ran later did note that her innocence had betrayed her.
%%* BrokenSmile: Reimu's smile in chapter 67.
* CanineCompanion:
** In chapter 12, Yukari makes note of the fact that a pug has taken up residence in her lobby when she performs her landlady duties and, after trying unsuccessfully to make it leave, she accepts and welcomes its company.
** Later, Reimu acquires one in the form of a puppy she's named, "Mine!"
* CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem: Heartwarmingly, Chen states this towards the end of chapter 55, when she says in her narration, "Sure, some of the time I can't fucking stand them but, at the same, I love these motherfuckers and can't live without 'em."
* CrapsackWorld: To a certain degree. Made a tad more apparent in chapter fourteen where Yuuka notes that some people resorted to their more unethical side to get by or get things that they need, as well as the fact that drugs run rampant. There is also the fact that Wretched Hives like The Forbiddens exist. Aside from the aforementioned, it is okay.
* CrazyPrepared: Because of an incident in which she was beaten up and had her shoes stolen, Mokou has it where in their apartment they load the guns, deadbolt the door, and keep are windows boarded up save a few small spaces here and there to put the gun tips and the grenades through.
* ChainOfDeals: Kind of, in that it only involved two people and we only see how it happens on one end. Yukari traded her amethyst earrings for the owning of an apartment building and we don't really see how it went on the other end or even find out who she traded with. It would be a safe assumption that amethyst earrings are worth a lot, explaining why it would be easier to trade them. If Chapter Four is to go by, it would be a safe assumption that their world works by this if one wants or needs something then they'll have to trade and make a deal or they'll have to steal it
* ChubbyMamaSkinnyPapa: Ran and Ren. It was noted that Ran put on weight since she's given birth, while Ren is probably still rather thin or otherwise slimmed.
* CuriosityKilledTheCast / CuriosityIsACrapshoot: According to Amoridere, these are partially what motivated Reimu to eat the rat poison, besides her being an ExtremeOmnivore, which that in itself involves curiosity as she puts things in her mouth to see if they they are edible. As we can see, it almost kills her and causes a panic as they try to save her.
-->Amoridere: Well, yeah, as that is what had prompted her to eat the rat poison in the first place because she wanted to see if it was food and, since it tasted sweet (it does last I checked), she thought it was something to eat and continued to eat it until the jar was empty.
* Doting Parents: Apparently, though more like DotingParent and aunt, Remilia and Flandre seem to function as this in terms of Sakuya, as they let her stay in the apartment with Yukari, Ran, Ren, Reimu, Marisa, Maribel, Renko, Anohana, Yume Ni, and the Ran's new litter of newborns at her own insistence. Of course, Ran doesn't seem to grasp why.
%%* DrivenToSuicide: From chapter 15, apparently, Satori was contemplating suicide.
* DrugsAreBad: How Yuuka sees them, as Mokou turned to running a meth lab, as well as being a meth addict for exact reasons unknown. However, Yuuka wonders why it is she couldn't have been a drunkard, though that could come from the fact that Mokou's meth-lab exploded.
* DoubleMeaning: Reimu's "Am I dying?" is supposed to be intended as this, in that Reimu is either doing one of or two things, asking if she is actually dying or, alternatively, asking why is someone is so sad about the situation she's accepted or, she could be asking both.
* ElmuhFuddSyndwome: According to chapter 6, Chen talks like this. As said in an author's note, Amoridere states she talks like this because of the brain damage she's sustained during the events of 20XXIV that left her unable to speak for up until a certain point and that the only reason we don't read her speaking like that in the chapter that she narrates, it is because she to her she sounds normal, whereas to us and the others she sounds like that.
--->Amoridere: In case you are curious as to why Chen sounds like Elmer Fudd it is because she has speech impediment that come from brain damage (which left her unable speak, up until a certain point in time) during the events of Gensokyo 20XXIV and the reason as to why we don't read her speaking like that during the previous chapter in which she narrates, it is because she is talking from her POV, ergo, to her she sounds normal, whereas to us, and the others she sounds like that.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Even though other people resorted to this, Yukari finds the thought of trading children for things appalling. Makes sense, considering she was abandoned as a child, as well as the fact she cannot have any of her own.
** In a similar vein, Remilia also noted that she cannot fathom why anyone would want to hurt Reimu, especially when she hasn't don them any harm, only looking to make friends and isn't much that should be feared. She also noted that she is virtually a child and couldn't think of harming one.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Reimu and she is noted to try and eat anything she picks up. In chapter 6, according to Suika, she eats a millipede and, later on, in chapter 24, this almost kills her, when she eats rat poison.
* Foreshadowing: It was noted in chapter 46 that Reimu views death as falling asleep and never waking up, which is what happens to Satori fourteen chapters later.
** An earlier example occurs when Miko is visiting for dinner and Reimu converses with her, during which her eyes closed. Later on, Reimu was rendered near blind after the events of the rat poison incident fifteen chapters later.
** In one chapter it was mentioned Reimu tried to stab Yume Ni with a pair of scissors, however, in chapter 82, after being kicked to the face and having her teeth broken, she attempts to stab her again with a pair of scissors and succeeded.
** It was noted in chapter 108 that Renko suffers from memory loss due to illness-induced brain damage and cannot remember someone she called "Puppy" and how that by the time she does remember, she will have RememberedTooLate, in the next chapter, it was revealed that had apparently passed away some time before.
* FreeRangeChildren: Subverted. If Reimu were younger than her assumed age-regression age (which is implied to be either five or six), she would be a StrayingBaby, she is clearly not allowed to be free-ranged and they do worry about her when she goes missing but that didn't stop her from getting out anyway. She was noted to be amused by her little adventure.
* FreudianExcuse: Apparently, from what we gather from Ran's lecture from chapter 5, it would be a safe assumption that the reason Sakuya behaves the way does is likely because she doesn't adjust to change very well, which isn't very farfetched.
%%* GroinAttack: An gives this Yume Ni twice
* Hikikomori: Miko for a justified reason, as she cannot see very well and hasn't familiarized herself with anything that isn't her apartment. She does state that she doesn't hope to remain like this, though, and seemed to be fairly happy when Chen comes over to invite her for dinner.
* HomeschooledKids: Played straight and Justified in that the kids are taught at home because the schools are A) there isn't that many schools ,B) the ones that are around aren't very safe (According to Amoridere, one school had bullet holes in the walls and another had a dead body actually, buried under it, also the fact that another is right in the middle of a waste dump site) , and C) many of the teachers are closer to that of students than they are teachers.
* InnocentSwearing: Averted, as we can see in Reimu's narration and, later on, in chapter 35, when Maribel, Renko, Alice, and Marisa look at Reimu and say, "Dammit Reimu!" and, earlier, in said chapter, Reimu said, "Shit!"
** Hard to say in An's case as that is the first thing she's said and we cannot really tell if she actually knew what it meant.
* IsItSomethingYouEat: Reimu, being near blind and needing to rely on other senses to explore her world, is prone to putting things in her mouth to figure out what they are.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Arguably in chapter 82, when Reimu stabs Yume Ni in the arm for kicking her in the face and breaking her teeth. Considering what Yume Ni had been doing so far, it's either this or DisproportionateRetribution.
%%* LastWords: "Shister..."
* LighterAndSofter: It is actually, in comparison to the others before it, but it will have a few dark elements here and there, which won't be very often often. Later on it dips somewhat into CerebusSyndrome
%%* MakeAWish: This was the subject in Chapter 100: Wish
* MayflyDecemberRomance: According to chapter 64, Ren's father is older than Yukari and very old for a kitsune, thus nearing the end of his life.
* MercyKill: The first serious moment of the story has it where Satori is contemplating overdosing her sister (who was severely injured and is dying as a result) with painkillers but feels horrible for doing so, so she stops but has to face the fact of her suffering in pain. Either way, both will indubitably suffer.
-->Satori:Should I let her suffer or should I take her life as an act of mercy?
* MissKitty: Subverted and played with. Yukari is treated more or less like this, apparently, as she notes that being a landlady comes with high status but as does being a madam, something she is treated the same as. However, according to chapter fourteen, Yuyuko basically is one in that she is the sort that owns a tavern, rather than being a madam of a brothel as well.
* MistakenForPregnant: Ran in chapter 22 and most of what Sakuya and Chen spend the day doing is trying to see if she is pregnant as per a bet. Naturally, Ran found it funny and confirms that she isn't pregnant and that she simply put on weight, stating that that isn't the first time she was mistaken for pregnant.
* Monster Roommates: Kind of in that all three are basically considered youkai by some definition or another as Mokou, Kaguya, and Suika are two immortals and an oni, respectively.
** There is also Kosuzu (a human), who lives with a hermit (Miko), a celestial (Tenshi), and a Tsurube-otoshi (Kisume), making that more or less played straight.
%%* MouthyKid: The kids, though Reimu has shades of this even more so.
* NoodleIncident:
** A couple that Ran mentioned was the time with the flowers (which is pretty much under one of the reasons as to why the children can't play outside)and the time with the lead pipe, something she notes that "she would be damned if she let that happen again".
** According to Yukari, she traded her earrings for an apartment building in which to own and live in. Besides what she said, we really don't know what exactly transpired or the circumstances exactly as to how that is a successful trade or where and how she got the earrings.
** There was the time where Mokou was ambushed, beaten up, and had her shoes stolen and that is really all we hear of it.
** A rather serious example comes from Koishi suffering injuries and we don't know exactly what happened.
** Apparently, Flandre used her abilities to blow up a door and it seems she's done that more than once.
** Averted in the case of the Mokou's meth-lab explosion, in that is really no mystery as to how that happened. TruthInTelevision, actually, as the ingredients used to make methamphetamine are known to be explosive, so there is no explanation necessary, as there have been accounts of meth labs exploding or otherwise catching fire because of that.
*** In Chapter 35, we get a few
** Maribel getting into Ren's tools and busting holes in walls.
** Renko wanted to know if Ran laid eggs and wanted to see exactly where they came from (according to Amoridere, said incident also involved the fact that Ran wasn't wearing any underwear at the time and that she was going about her bedtime ritual)
** Alice wanted to figure out how a television set worked, in and out.
** Marisa stuck something up her nose to see if she could still smell if she did and they had to farm it out to Ran and that had happened more than once and we never find out what it is she stuck up her nose and the events surrounding that.
** According to Chapter 38, Baka taunted Reimu with food and Reimu responded by causing him injury, but how is never really said, though it has been implied that she caused injury by biting if not scratching. From said chapter, comes the time with the rocks and the head injury from Ren's childhood, something he cited as a reason why Baka shouldn't be allowed to watch children.
--> Ren: I would know, considering that one time with the rocks and the head injury and why Father wouldn't even dare to allow us out of his sight.
** In Chapter 45, at first we didn't know what Yukari was beating up Tenshi for, besides, "What happened yesterday", but we later find out she was doing something had but exactly what she was doing is unknown.
** In chapter 49, according to Ran, Reimu had hurt herself while asleep. We never figure out how she managed to or what exactly she was doing though, it would be safe assumption that she was probably sleepwalking.
** In chapter 53, the children got up late at night to watch a movie and, apparently, it wasn't appropriate for children, as well as the fact that it scared them, save Youmu and Reimu.
** In chapter 59, Sakuya noted there was a time where man tried to stick his hand into Yukari's cleavage and it landed him with vagina and a set of boobs.
** Chapter 82 mentions how on the day Reimu tried to stab Yume Ni with a pair of scissors the latter did something to her and that she had it coming.
* NotEvilJustMisunderstood: A Child! Sakuya to a certain degree in that she behaved the way she did could be because of the fact that she's had a hard time adjusting to change, which isn't too far-fetched, considering their situation and that some children do respond to change that way.
* PartingWordsRegret: Chen wishes she didn't give the ReasonYouSuckSpeech to Yume Ni, with that being the last thing she's said to her.
* PassedInTheirSleep: We have this with Satori, who passes away during the night when after spending the entire day enjoying herself since her sister passed away.
* PetTheDog: A non-villainous example. Yukari, who as landlady more or less frustrated with the position, she does actual do something kind like giving former prostitutes a home and a new life, as well, letting a pug live in the lobby, after initially trying to make it leave.
* PleaseWakeUp: Subverted. In chapter 46, when Reimu thinks a sleeping Chen won't wake up, after she falls asleep, she wakes her up, only because she doesn't want her to fall asleep and never wakes up. Played straight in chapter 60 when she tries to wake up Satori, who has passed away in her sleep.
* PracticalCurrency: Anything apparently. Three of the things mentioned were food, earrings, and kids.
* ProperlyParanoid: Two situations
** In chapter 3, Reimu is leashed to a hook somewhere in the living room. The leash and harness is long enough to let her move around the room with no problems. The other kids don't have to be leashed, just her, because, she'll hurt herself (on purpose) otherwise.
** It was mentioned a few times that the kids can only play inside. This is because they live in an anarchy and it's too keep the kids from getting hurt or worse.
* ReducedToRatburgers:
** Still and Yukari notes that she has grown tired of eating those. According to chapter 4, good food is rare and it was noted that canned food is somewhat of a commodity.
** In chapter 55, they eat frog soup.
* RedLightDistrict: Played with. These were mentioned in chapter 64 and it is unknown what type these are, though given the fact that there is no government, they're likely to be either type, though more likely to be Types II and III, very seldom Type I. Of course, it was also mentioned that Ren's older brother Baka also frequents these places.
** In earlier chapters, prostitution was mentioned, hinting towards it.
* RightThroughTheWall: In Chapter 9, it was noted that Miko could hear Ran and Ren having sex from four doors away, right after they got married.
* ShearMenace: Reimu tried to stab Yume Ni with scissors for what reason is unclear, then again, she does have psychological problems.
* SmokingIsGlamorous: Flandre sees smoking as that because "she wants to be fancy and fancy people smoke".
-->Flandre: Oh no, of course not, Remilia, I want to be fancy like Yukari and fancy people smoke.
* SpoiledBrat: Again, apparently, Sakuya
* StepfordSmiler: In chapter 54, it seems to be that not all of Reimu's smiles are genuine
--->Ren: [...]If anything her smile is her way of comforting others and herself mostly, diverting attention away from her sorrow and pain, much like how Chen purred to herself.
* SuperWheelchair: Nitori makes one for Chen.
* TemporaryBlindness: Kind of in that she can see but she is rendered pretty close to blind as a result of the rat poison incident. Reimu does recover from it eventually.
** Later on, in chapter 108, this was revealed to be the case with Renko, in the aftermath of illness.
* TheAlcoholic: Kaguya and Suika
* TheBully: Sakuya, according to Ran, because she thinks she's the oldest and the biggest (Chen is a little smaller than she is), therefore she can do what she wants.
** In chapter 59, we Yume Ni and, from Sakuya what narrates, she is worse.
* TheGhost: Ran's babies are usually mentioned, though this could be justified in that they are still very young and don't get around and Ran probably keeps them in one location of their apartment, like one would do with very young babies
* TheSleepless: Ran, according to preview for chapter 13. It is a mystery as to why/how she didn't suffer any ill effects from not eating or sleeping for over 72 hours.
%%* TheStoner: Mokou, aptly called "Methhead Mokou"
* TimeDelayedDeath:
** Koishi was injured by someone or some thing and it takes some time for her die.
** Yume Ni dies of a long term illness.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Reimu, in chapter 82, when she speaks with a combination of everyone's voices.
* WeWantOurJerkBack: When Yume Ni starts hitting the other kids, Sakuya did note that, while she has hit them before, Reimu wasn't nearly as bad as Yume Ni.
--->Sakuya: Of course, Reimu would hit but that depended on why and she wouldn't do that randomly, also she would stop, but Yu, that little piece of shit, just beats us up for the hell of it, whenever she gets mad.
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: From what we see, Ran taking care of the children is mostly commonplace as Yukari is a landlady and Ren is probably busy with something or he could be taking care of their newborns, either or which is never said, though it is clear he is doing something. The children don't seem too affected by it, as they are probably used to it. According to preview for chapter 13, which has him telling Ran she should rest, he does seem to have something to do but otherwise isn't too far away where he cannot be reached should he be needed. It was stated in one of the earlier chapters that he is usually out doing something but is never far.
* WidowsWeeds: Satori dons these in chapter 15, after the death of her sister.
** In subversion, we have Yukari, in chapter 56, wearing these when she has caught the attention of Ren's father and was feeling so shy (she is also wearing veil). She started wearing them more often because it made her feel less shy and figured it would be better to pursue romance that way.
* WildChild:
** In chapter fourty-three, the children, when found after being searched for for over a few months, are more or less like this. Though, it was noted that they would be easier to rehabilitate, as they haven't been in the wild for that long of time.
** In chapter 79, the children, save Chen and Sakuya, become wild children having stayed in the wild longer than before. It was noted by Ren that what can be reclaimed what was lost with the older would be possible because they are older, whereas for Youmu and Sanae this wouldn't be entirely possible, as those two are toddlers.
* WorstAid: Played straight in that, after Reimu eats rat poison, they tried to get her to vomit, which is something if it hasn't already happened, one shouldn't attempt. After it had seeped into her blood, requiring extraction, Kaguya pointed out that Ran's blood could kill her, stating that it might have been different than hers. Of course, this trope is also justified in that they didn't know how to deal with one of the children eating poison, as it had never happened before.
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: Koishi's injuries don't heal and she spends some time bleeding and dying from them.
* WrongSideOfTheTracks:
** Apparently, anywhere that isn't overrun with forest is like this. According to Amoridere, there seems to be an abundant of waste dumps not too far away from where they live and that the air is from time to time polluted, making them more of like industrial slums. On the other hand, they are also Wretched Hives because of the abundance of drugs and prostitution, as well as gunfights and the fact that apparently landmines are being place about (Reimu is noted to have tripped one).
** According to Amoridere, there are The Forbiddens, which is considered to be No-Man's Land, and, compared to the rest of the setting, these are the worst places to be, especially if one be woman or child, making those areas Wretched Hives.
--->Amoridere: The Forbiddens is where the worst of the crap that tends to occur in this society occurs. Women and, sometimes, children are sold into prostitution where they tend to die and children are traded for just about anything or killed just because, as well as the fact that most of those areas are laced with various traps, the which of include landmines, snares, bear-traps, and vicious dogs, on top of the fact that those areas are best know for their pollution and toxins, as well as its corrupting influences.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: Apparently, as we've learned in chapter 34, Ren's father has this sort of feeling more or less about Baka, who apparently married if not met a "paintbrush-like ("paintbrush" in that she was really thin aside from her tail), selfish, greedy, foul-tongued, and bitchy kitsune, while Ren married something he considers more favorable.
* YoureDrinkingBreastMilk: A variant in that Ran isn't human but she is a kitsune and it is noted that she apparently keeps her milk in containers that she puts in the refrigerator, as well as the fact that someone is apparently prone to drinking it, thinking it was regular milk. Ren remembered thusly to put labels on them. Apparently, Reimu mostly does that

!!Tropes Specifically for Chapters 62 and 75
%%* BloodyHandPrint: Yes, actually, the first signs of the entities' presence is these.
%%* CallBack: To Gensokyo 20XXIV
%%* DoubleMeaning: From Yukari's POV: "Lover" is a euphemism, be that noted.
* GhostlyGoals: A subversion in that these are not actual ghosts, though they function similarly to them, though. As far as goals go, they are merely emotions from the repressed memories and they have to be calmed.
* IronicNurseryTune: "Kagome, Kagome" being the Japanese equivalent of this is heard from poltergiest singing intermittently.
* MoodWhiplash: For a typically lighthearted story these can be considered.
* Poltergeist: Yes, actually, in they are the common definition of term and they start out fairly malevolent. By chapter 75, they start out a tad passive but then they get out of hand
* RepressedMemories: A plot point in that these have spawned the poltergeists.
* SwitchingPOV:
** Chapter 62 is narrated from at least six if not seven points of views.
** Chapter 75 is apparently narrated by ten points of views.

!!Gensokyo Diaries

* BabiesEverAfter: Ran's tenth diary entry end with her labor and they were born some time before Gensokyo 20XXV.
* BedlamHouse: Subverted. Yukari did note that the staff are rather kind and help her make progress in readusting, which seems to be good place to be.
* CompanionCube:
** Sakuya's diary apparently, being that she addresses it directly almost whenever she writes.
** Chen's diary as we later find out in Chapter II of Gensokyo Diaries VIII, to which she addresses as "Mr. Letterbook".
%%* DeadManWriting: Keine's final entry
* EpistolaryNovel: Chen's diary apparently, being that she wrote it in a letter format, apparently to Yukari, if her third entry is to go by. When Yukari did come to the Outside World, she wrote a little note at the bottom of the page in response to that particular entry.
** Then we have Kaguya's diary, which is, as said, little letters to a deceased Eirin.
** Keine and, true to the main storyline, she dies.
** Sakuya and, like Keine, she ultimately dies.
* LawOfInverseFertility: Sakuya pursues a romance and ends up unknowingly pregnant but miscarries, finding out she's pregnant only after going to a doctor over the symptoms of the miscarriage.
* MadOracle: Yukari, apparently, if her seventh diary entry is to go by. It is interesting to note that she's seen most of those things that occur in Gensokyo 20XXIV in her dreams.
* PeacefulInDeath: Sakuya's death, to which Yuuka, having been her caregiver, muses on. She did note that, if they were going to suffer, then she wants their deaths to be as peaceful as Sakuya's was. She also did note that death was only peace that Sakuya could have very well attained.
* ThatWasTheLastEntry:
** There is usually some entry written right before they died but the one that seems to stick out is the final entry in Sanae's diary.
** Miko's final entry which would be a reconstruction in that it is final entry on the account that she was losing her eyesight, not because she died.
** There is also Chen's last recording of her audio diary in that it is the last entry of her diary likely because A) her taperecorder was likely destroyed or rendered unusable after or when the nukes were dropped, along with not having any batteries or cassette tapes, B) she was blind during that time so she wouldn't be able to write anything without dictating it to someone else for them to write, and C) it would be unlikely that they would have had much paper in which could be written on, along with the fact they wouldn't have had any sort of writing implements.
** While she immortal, Kaguya only has written three letters, the third being her final in that she likely didn't take her diary with her.
** Yuuka's final entry is a poem that ends in an ellipsis
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Mikosan reflects on one given to her by Yukari. She makes note of the fact that she couldn't argue against.
* TheReveal:
** Keine's diary revealed that Kaguya messed up her foot (along with her leg) during the tricycle incident mentioned during the events of Gensokyo 20XXIV.
** According to Ran's diary, the names of Yume Ni's litter mates were Bi, Akira, Bunmei,and Ikki.
** In Yukari's diary, we actually do find out what happened to Ran's pup from a previous litter, Yume, or, rather, her cause of death, and it was that she apparently died of either drug overdose (if it wasn't the contributing factor), as both of she and Reimu were being drugged to be quiet, or, if the drug overdose didn't directly cause, died of failure to thrive from being separated from her mother.

!!The Unsaid Rivalry of the Youkai and the Shrine Maiden

* DrivenToSuicide: Yukari contemplates suicide as a way of ending her pain but found she couldn't do it.
* ExplosiveBreeder: Yukari does indeed note that if she could have children then she will have had so many that Gensokyo will be overrun.
* TheReveal: Reimu's mother does have nave and her name was revealed as Reiko.
%%* TheRival: Reimu's mother is this to Yukari and vice versa
* TruthInTelevision: To a certain degree if their rivalry is looked at from a RealLife perspective as Amoridere drew some inspiration from some of her favorite shows, more specifically, Series/TheJerrySpringerShow Steve Wilkos where a similar conflict involving a child occurred over the fact that someone took care of the child and the parent was out of the picture for long amount of time, not even making an attempt to visit, the circumstance of which is very similar.

* CorporalPunishment/ DontMakeMeTakeMyBeltOff: A couple of topics in The Tantrum Phase. A subversion in that Yukari isn't wearing it but she does briefly discipline Chen with a belt, saying, "I do NOT want to have this discussion and do this again and, should you do this again, well, you will encounter the belt and will get another belt beating!". When Ran was a child, Yukari did use a bamboo switch and it was noted it was two quick stinging swats to the thighs and buttocks, which, according to Amoridere and as Ran implied, did it's job. When Yukari attempts to discipline Chen again with the belt, it gets inverted when Chen takes it and hits her in the face with it, causing her to pull a downplayed of a ScrewThisImOuttaHere, stating Chen is out of control.
** In the sequel, Marisa gets an ass beating for getting out of line
* DotingParent: Downplayed in that Ran is only doting in terms of allowing the tantrums to continue and or originally thinking to pacify or apologize for them, and is trying her hardest to cope with them. After some time, she gets tired and just walks out, leaving Chen alone for a week, while she has time to herself. Of course, in the sequel it was touched upon that she does dote on Chen and it may have contributed to her behaving horribly some time before
%%* EnfantTerrible: Chen with her tantrums. In the sequel, she does gain a partner in crime, Marisa Kirisame
%%* GrewASpine: Ran in the sequel.
* ImNotHungry: As a child, if a flashback is to go by, Ran pulls this off when when being defiant in retaliation after receiving a punishment. This had the effect of making Yukari upset and her weak from starvation.
* ImpactSilhouette: According to Ran and a flashback, Yukari put Marisa through a wall for her disrespect and it included a Marisa-shaped hole in the wall. Marisa never did forget that.
* NoodleIncident: According to Doting Mommy Ran, Ran mentioned a time where Chen played a prank on her and it caused her to blow up a watermelon in Yukari's face because she thought she did it. We never do find out what prank Chen played that caused her to a prank like that in retaliation is a mystery.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After getting hit in the face with a belt, Yukari decides to leave, pointing out that Chen is out of control. Later on, Ran, after having enough, she says, while Chen is screaming and crying on the floor, "Okay, listen, I'm going to go somewhere else to have some time to myself and maybe then you will be more than willing to straighten yourself out." and walks out of the door, leaving for a week to have time to herself.
* ShoutOut: There is a NoodleIncident where Ran blew up a watermelon in Yukari's face.
* SpoiledBrat: Chen behaved like one in The Tantrum Phase and it is noted how troubling that is in her and the fact that she hasn't behaved that way before.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: A non-fatal and downplayed variant, in that Chen slapped Yukari in the face with a belt and it ended with a red mark. By Doting Mommy Ran, which is implied to be some time after that, it's still there and it still hurts, as it apparently takes more time heal. That seems to beg the question as how hard did she hit her for it to have that sort of effect.

!!Tropes for A Defiant Child and an Infantile Lazy Bum
* GrewASpine: After putting with both of Yukari and Chen's bad behavior, she puts her foot down and decides that she's hands off for awhile.
* EmotionalRegression: It was noted that Yukari had grown so lazy that she may as well be infant and she does actually behave like one.
* LazyBum: Yukari, to the point that is was mentioned where she doesn't even use real words anymore or even gets up to use the bathroom, instead going in diapers, which, ironically, changing them is the only thing she seems to do besides gapping. She also only sleeps
* SpoiledBrat: A bit more downplayed in that Chen is only defiant and seems to be more interested in doing what she wanted to do.

!!Foundling
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: The story is about a foundling
* GratuitousJapanese: Not quite gratuitous per se, as the story is set in Japan, however, Yukari does say something in Romanized Japanese in an otherwise (translated) English story
%%* GreyAndGrayMorality: Humans and Youkai
* NotSoDifferentRemark: It was noted, at some point, that Ran couldn't understand why the humans would abandon their children, yet she notes that youkai do the same.
* ParentalTitleCharacterization: In chapter 14,Reimu calls Ran and Ren, "An" and "En", like how a kid might use "mom" and "dad".
* VirtualSoundtrack: Chapter 9 is mentioned to have Fernwood's Kalyan playing, along with providing a link (in the Website/ArchiveOfOurOwn version)
* YourNormalIsOurTaboo: The youkai do find the humans to be odd in some regards. An example of this would be Ran and Suika's conversation about cows and, as we find out, youkai don't tend to keep cows, however, they do keep chickens or pigs.
