Runic Games was an American game developer based in Seattle. The company was founded in 2008 by, Travis Baldree, [[Creator/BlizzardEntertainment Blizzard North]] co-founders Max and Erich Schaefer, and Peter Hu. The staff was mainly composed of the defunct Flagship Studios, known for developing ''VideoGame/HellgateLondon''.

In 2009, the company released ''VideoGame/{{Torchlight}}'', a top-down ActionRPG in the vein of ''VideoGame/{{Diablo}}''. A sequel, ''VideoGame/TorchlightII'', was released in 2012. During ''Torchlight II'''s development, Perfect World Entertainment invested $8.4 million into Runic, acquiring the company. As a result, Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer left, desiring to make games on a smaller scale, ultimately forming Double Damage Games.

In 2017, Runic released released ''Hob'', an ActionAdventure game based on exploration in the style of ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda''. This was the last game developed by Runic before their owners, Perfect World Entertainment, closed the studio in November 2017, which also came with large layoffs at another subsidiary, Motiga. Perfect World said this was to reflect the company's focus on "games as a service."
