Robert Merle (28 August 1908 – 27 March 2004) was a French novelist.

His novels were [[HeAlsoDid quite diverse in genre]] (including {{science fiction}}, {{historical fiction}}, [[{{Swashbuckler}} swashbuckling adventures]] and [[WarIsHell grim anti-war stuff]]). Several of his novels were adapted to films. What he is best remembered for may depend on who you ask, but the most popular books are his ''Literature/FortuneDeFrance'' series. These books set in [[TheCavalierYears late 16th and early 17th century]] were so popular in France that some people called him "The20thCentury's Creator/AlexandreDumas".
