Patrick Wayne Swayze (August 18, 1952 -- September 14, 2009) was an acclaimed [[ShirtlessScene shirtless]] actor and dancer.

To begin with, he was the product of [[BadassFamily a dance instructor and a rodeo champion]]. Plainly, his destiny as an all-American, ballet-dancing, Judo-kicking beefcake was written in the stars.

Swayze's career began as an understudy for Danny Zuko in a Broadway production of ''Film/{{Grease}}'', eventually leading to great deal of TV and film work. He was a peripheral member of the Creator/BratPack (mainly via his role in ''Literature/TheOutsiders'', alongside...well, pretty much ''every'' young male actor who made it big in TheEighties).

His breakout role came as Orry Main in the ''Series/NorthAndSouthUS'' TV miniseries, followed by his iconic performance as Johnny Castle in ''Film/DirtyDancing''. Its wild success ended up {{type casting}} the actor, which resulted in several flops, the most successful of which was (ironically) ''Film/RoadHouse''.

His fame started to wane in TheNineties, though he did make an incongruous appearance here and there, such as in ''Film/DonnieDarko''. Swayze landed a starring role in the A&E cop drama ''Series/TheBeast'' right before being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the only thing that would dare trifle with him. He died at age 57.

''Website/{{Cracked}}'' prepared a compelling brief for why he is [[http://www.cracked.com/blog/tribute-to-patrick-swayze-2nd-best-film-star-of-all-time/ the second-greatest actor in the world]].

* EightiesHair: Though he has short hair in the majority of his films, many fans identify him with the Power Mullet.
* DeadArtistsAreBetter: He has gained greater esteem because of his battle against pancreatic cancer.
* {{Determinator}}: He worked on ''Series/TheBeast'' while undergoing cancer treatment. Unfortunately, [[TheFireflyEffect despite positive reviews, the show had low ratings]] because Swayze was unable to promote it himself.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: While undergoing treatment for his pancreatic cancer, Swayze never broke his stride. He even challenged the homeopaths who claimed he could be cured with their "treatments":
-->"If anybody had that cure out there, like so many people swear they do, you'd be two things. You'd be very rich, and you'd be very famous. Otherwise, shut up."
** Also:
--->"I've had more lifetimes than any 10 people put together, and it's been an amazing ride...So this is O.K."
* FamousLastWords: According to his family, "I'm not afraid to die. I'm going home."
* GenerationXerox: Both he and his father Jesse had died at age 57. Patrick died from pancreatic cancer, and Jesse died from a heart attack.
* HappilyMarried: His high school sweetheart Lisa Niemi, from when he was just 23 years old until the day he died.
* HollywoodSkydiving: Subverted. He was an experienced skydiver, and did all the jumps in his films without stunts (e.g. 55 jumps in ''Film/PointBreak1991''), and he also frequented the local drop zone. Those who knew him considered him a natural talent.
* MrFanservice
* RealMenWearPink: Studied ballet in high school, shrugging off the weak-minded fools who claimed it wasn't manly. To the end of his life he promoted encouraging parents to enroll their sons in ballet as commonly as they did their daughters.
