Michael Winterbottom (born 1961) is prolific director from the North of England. In a career spanning more than twenty years, he has directed 27 films and television series. His work can be broken down into five different categories:

* Idiosyncratic adaptations of classic English literature.
* Hard-boiled dramas, often of a historical/political bent.
* Wacky comedies of manners, often featuring pompous figures in [[TheCameo cameos]] or even [[AsHimself as themselves]].
* Introspective family dramas.

Believe it or not, there's a lot of overlap between these. Did we mention he was from the North?
