!!Tropes featured in his works include:
* TheFilmOfTheBook: Several of his films are adaptations of books, including two Creator/NicholasSparks romance novels: ''Dear John'' and ''Literature/SafeHaven''.
* RecurringElement: Dogs. He directed two films that have dogs as protagonists, ''Hachi: A Dog's Tale'', which is a loose adaptation of the real-life story of UsefulNotes/{{Hachiko}}, and [[TheFilmOfTheBook the film adaptation]] of ''Film/ADogsPurpose''. The movie that first rose him to fame, ''Film/MyLifeAsADog'', is about a kid that, as the title implies, identifies himself with a dog, specifically comparing himself to Laika, the first dog sent into space.
* WhiteVoidRoom: Several of the music videos he directed for Music/{{ABBA}} were shot on these, such as "Ring Ring", "Waterloo", "Mamma Mia", and "Take a Chance on Me".
