->''"Helena Bonham Carter is incapable of uttering a single word without charm, unless she has to for a role."''
-->-- '''Creator/RogerEbert''', [[https://twitter.com/ebertchicago/status/42016665923223552 February 27, 2011 twitter]]

Helena Bonham-Carter, [[UsefulNotes/KnightFever CBE]] (born May 26, 1966) is an acclaimed and versatile English actress who, for the past decade, has been better known as Creator/TimBurton's former [[CreatorCouple girlfriend/leading lady]] ''[[ProductionPosse in everything]]''. They met while he was directing TheRemake of ''Franchise/PlanetOfTheApes'' in 2001, eventually marrying and having two children together until December 2014, when they announced their intentions to separate. Before that, she was briefly Creator/KennethBranagh's girlfriend/leading lady; although they only made one film during the relationship (not counting ''Mary Shelley's Frankenstein'', which was made before they got together).

She is the great-granddaughter of British Prime Minister UsefulNotes/HerbertHenryAsquith.

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Quite a few of the characters she's played have been described/portrayed as hideous in the original book/play, and then ''she'' gets cast as them in the film versions. See ''Film/HarryPotter'', ''Theatre/SweeneyTodd'', and ''Film/{{Les Miserables|2012}}''.
* BeautyInversion: For ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010''.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Gets typecast into this role fairly often. See ''Film/HarryPotter'', ''Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet'', and ''Film/FightClub''.
* ElegantGothicLolita: Elegant Gothic Lolita Clothing: Sometimes wears clothes inspired by this style, especially in films where she plays a darker character (''Harry Potter'' and ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'').
* EnglishRose: Some of her older roles. Still gets these now and then (e.g. as Queen Elizabeth--granted, the Queen Mum was actually Scottish, but she played her as a grown-up English Rose).
* EvilIsSexy: [[invoked]] Several of her roles.
* FakeAmerican: In ''Film/FightClub'', ''Film/BigFish'', ''Film/DarkShadows'' and ''Film/TheLoneRanger.''
* HideYourPregnancy: She was pregnant during ''Literature/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrince'' and ''Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet''. This is why she spends parts of those movies hiding behind the furniture, and her costume seems to change size and shape.
* LargeHam: Whenever she plays a villainess.
** [[Film/FightClub Marla Singer]] is in a class by herself.
* MeanCharacterNiceActor: Some of her roles have her playing very nasty, cruel and unlikeable characters (''Film/FightClub'' and ''Film/HarryPotter'' stand out). In real life, she seems to be none of those things.
* MessyHair: In most of her film roles.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Would you believe she's in her early fifties?
* PublicExposure: [[http://fishlove.co.uk/collections/helena-bonham-carter.html Has posed naked with a big eye tuna]].
* TakeThat: She was on the receiving end of a pretty big one which she found hard to live down. Helena compained in an interview that people found her hard to take seriously because [[SoBeautifulItsACurse she was both pretty and upper middle-class]]. This incensed her peer [[Series/GimmeGimmeGimme Kathy Burke]] who came back with this immortal riposte:
-->“As a lifelong member of the non-pretty working classes, I would like to say to Helena Bonham Carter (wholly pledged member of the very pretty upper-middle classes): shut up, you stupid cunt.”
* TypeCasting: Once upon a time, she was most famous for playing rosy-cheeked ingénues?[[note]]Well, not so much [[{{Hamlet}} Ophelia...]][[/note]] [[PlayingAgainstType Breaking out of one type]] (read: ''Film/FightClub'') led to it becoming her new type!
** With hindsight, her performance as the scheming Kate Croy in 1997's ''The Wings of the Dove'' -- complete with a healthy dose of {{Fanservice}} -- was the moment that critics noticed that she was starting to rise above typecasting. ''Fight Club'', two years later, merely sealed the deal, albeit with a resounding slam.
** Her role in the live action version of ''Cinderella'' seems to be this. She's playing the FairyGodmother, without a touch of irony.
** PlayingWithCharacterType: Her portrayal of Elizabeth in ''Film/MaryShelleysFrankenstein'' is sort of a merger of her two well-known types (before her second one had been established).
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Was nearly cast as Sarah in Creator/JimHenson's ''Film/{{Labyrinth}}''.
** Was also the first choice for Bess in ''Film/BreakingTheWaves'' but dropped out due to personal problems with the film's ending.
** She was one of the actresses considered for the lead role in ''[[Literature/BridgetJones Bridget Jones's Diary]]'', so if she had that role she could've starred in two movies with Creator/ColinFirth as her paramour.
