->''"[[UsefulNotes/OlympicGames MAAAAAAAAARRRRRRK NUUUUUUUUUT!!!!!]]"''

Gavin David Free (born 23 May 1988) is an English actor, director, producer, and cinematographer living in the United States[[note]]He gained permanent residency in 2019.[[/note]] who is known for his work for Creator/RoosterTeeth Productions, their Creator/AchievementHunter division, his own web series ''WebVideo/TheSlowMoGuys'', the voice of Vav in ''WebAnimation/XRayAndVav'', the voice of Scarlet David in ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'' and starring as Woody in ''Film/LazerTeam'' and ''Film/LazerTeam2''.

Gavin [[PromotedFanboy started out as a fan of Rooster Teeth]], later going on to become a forum moderator before eventually joining the company. He is known for saying some silly stuff every now and then, which causes the others to [[NeverLiveItDown never let him live it down]].

On October 26, 2015, it was announced that Gavin had been promoted to [[https://youtu.be/3ODSGbbWf7g?t=10m20s Creative Director for Rooster Teeth]], although he later stepped down from the position in early 2016 to focus on ''The Slow Mo Guys''. Back in 2007, he was credited in a single episode of ''Series/TopGearUK'' as a slow-motion cinematographer.
----
!!People Like Tropes:
%%As with all Creator/ pages, trivia tropes about the creator specifically are to be posted here, not a Trivia/ page, as they technically are InUniverse in the case of the person's career.
* TheAce:
** Not in many games, but he and Ryan share this role when it comes to ''Hitman''. Just about any video on it is bound to feature the two of them and a rotating set of guests.
** He usually comes in first place when playing ''Towerfall'' against the others.
* AchillesHeel: Does not have a strong stomach. Even simply describing something disgusting to him is enough to make him retch. This being a known trait of his, it culminated in him being asked to sniff an incredibly disgusting mixture in a protein shake as a joke, causing him to vomit ''on stage''. After that, Burnie of Rooster Teeth swore they would never do that again.
* AlcoholInducedIdiocy: Once in a while alcohol will make him even worse than normal. One incident of note, though, was ''Let's Play Minecraft'' Episode 2 when he [[http://youtu.be/Tihfx6DunZs?t=3m12s stole Ray's gold ingots, made them into four gold blocks, and called it the Tower of Pimps]] to everyone's annoyance. [[LittleDidIKnow Little did he know]], he made [[DawnOfAnEra Rooster Teeth history that day]].
-->''Gavin:'' Let's get this gold back because the [[ItWillNeverCatchOn Tower of Pimps was not successful]].
* AlwaysSecondBest:
** He often does well in ''Minecraft'' challenges (e.g. taking an early lead in the Wool and Petting Zoo), only to lose at the end. As such he's only won the Tower of Pimps a handful of times.
** Showing that he is smarter than he acts, he tends to do really well on trivia games, but almost always comes in second behind Geoff.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Suggested in multiple ''Let's Build'' episodes; whilst posing a question to Gavin during their frequent games of Would You Rather and What If, Geoff always says, "Would you do X with the hottest girl or guy you've ever seen..." While normally this could just be Geoff being a {{Troll}} by implying Gavin is gay, it should be noted that Gavin never reacts to the addition of the "or guy".
** Just about all the HoYay moments in let's plays are started by Gavin, such as crouching behind someone in ''Minecraft'' to pretend to be humping them.
** He seemed to have a thing for Monty, as well. See IfItsYouItsOkay.
** He also once said that he put the posters of girls in bikinis up on his bedroom wall [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday so his parents wouldn't think he was gay]]. He fully admits that they had absolutely no reason to think he was gay, as he'd given no cues that suggested it, so he just wanted them to know for some reason...
** He said in a Let's Play that his strangest crush was Music/DavidBowie in ''Film/{{Labyrinth}}''. Of course, it is David Bowie, [[EvenTheGuysWantHim and Geoff even agreed with him]].
** When the Hunters played a race called "Water Sports" in ''GTA Online'', Gavin is the one who comments that he "loves pissing on men."
** In both a GTA V Let's Play and on an Off Topic, he talks about having a dream where Michael has a torpedo sized dick. And one dream where Jeremy was masturbating in the bushes.
** In the third Sky Factory 4 episode, after Jeremy thought bisexuality sounded cool, Gavin agreed with him.
** While he has denied being attracted to men (and has done so while drunk), he has admitted in Last Call #198 and several other podcasts that he was open to the idea of experimenting. The trope is definitely played for laughs whenever Geoff is around, however.
* AmusingInjuries: He regularly gets slapped, prodded, pushed and out and out abused. The only reasons that he tolerates it are that it's funny, it doesn't hurt as much as looks like it does, and if he ever did express genuine discomfort and hurt with his treatment, he knows that the rest of AH would tone it down. The fact that he does it back might make up for it. Worst of these injuries are a scar left from when Michael tackled him and when Geoff starts kicking the crap out of him in real life.
** Averted when he discussed the fact that he might have [[spoiler:had a mini stroke, and went blind for three days another time after falling and hitting his head]]. Everybody was clearly unnerved...then went back to saying "this explains [[NeverLiveItDown a lot about what you say"]]. Even after that, they urged Gavin to go to the hospital and get the former of those conditions checked out, and still do whenever he mentions it.
** Played straight and averted by different members of the crew during his diarrhea incident. In a Titanfall Let’s Play, he mentioned that in one day, he shit his pants six times. Everyone laughed at first, but when he mentioned that he still felt awful and was in a lot of pain, Michael, Jack, and Geoff kept joking but Ray and Ryan stopped laughing and started to sincerely ask if he needed to see a doctor.
* AndIMustScream: PlayedForLaughs at the end of ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 73. [[spoiler:Because he crashed on the moon and lost all of his supplies (including his oxygen tanks), Gavin is trapped in an endless loop of respawning and suffocating until the others come to help him.]]
* {{Angrish}}: Some of the time, what he says will come out as angered gibberish or incomprehensible noise that have been nicknamed "bird noises" due to how high pitched and squawk-y they are.
* AnimalMotifs: Birds. His signature "bird noises", his nose is occasionally referred to as a "beak", and his ''Ultimate Chicken Horse'' avatar is the titular Chicken or its Macaw skin. In one of Meg's vlogs, she even compared him to a [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Psyduck]] because of his {{Cloudcuckoolander}} nature. During one ''Animal Crossing'' livestream, Fiona bought a duck suit, complete with beak mask and egg helmet, and convinced his avatar to put it on, much to his embarrassment.
-->'''Gavin:''' A lot of people tell me I have a beak.\\
'''Jack:''' You ''sound'' like a bird.\\
'''Gavin:''' ''[shrill squawk]''\\
'''Geoff:''' You make that noise again, I'm fucking gonna beat you down.\\
'''Gavin:''' ''[confused quieter squeak]''
* BadassLabcoat:
** He dons one for ''The Slow Mo Guys.''
** He and Michael also don them in the promo posters for their ''VideoGame/SurgeonSimulator2013'' videos. Seen [[http://store.roosterteeth.com/products/ah-surgeon-simulator-movie-poster-24-x-36 here]].
* TheBadGuyWins: Subverted. In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 35, he royally screws Jack and Geoff over when they weren't posing that much of a threat to him, but he doesn't get any comeuppance since it ends in a {{cliffhanger}}. However, in the next episode, Gavin turns back into TheLoad for Michael, and they end up losing by a few seconds to ''Ryan''.
* BaitAndSwitch: Done brilliantly in "Madden: Super Bowl Special". Up by five with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter, Michael and Ray wanted to run the ball, so it runs out the clock and seals the game for their team. Gavin, [[CloudCuckoolander being Gavin]], said "I'm gonna pass it to Michael," and the boys trust him because his lack of knowledge with American football has led to him calling his moves so that his team can predict and work with them. Two seconds later, he yells out "[[WhamLine OR AM I]]!! HAHAHA!!" and gives it to ''Ray'', who ran with the ball for a touchdown, bringing them up by ''30-18''. Easily his best decision as a quarterback.
* BerserkButton: He ''clearly'' doesn't like animal cruelty, even if meant as a joke.
** Oddly enough he keeps killing turtles in World of Warcraft and was perfectly fine in taking part of bear punching in Red Dead Redemption.
** He'll walk off most of the injuries you give him and laugh them off too, but a GroinAttack seems to be the way to trigger this. Notably, when Gavin was [[ShareTheMalePain kicked into a metal sheet, penis first]], he became a lot more frosty throughout the rest of the day it happened, and then tried drunkenly getting revenge on Burnie later. It probably stems from the fact he had surgery involving his testicles, meaning he has to be rather careful to avoid causing further damage.
*** Actually he got kicked into the wall of a standing toilet, so he hit a metal sheet that was likely covered in piss.
---->'''Burnie:''' [[https://youtu.be/3eVCzXh1mDw I actually made Gavin mad for the first time.]] He was mad at me -
---->'''Gus:''' ''How''!? I kicked him in the ''butthole'', what did ''you'' do to make him mad!?
** He may be a troll, but he will at least play by the rules of the game when the group are doing a serious round of something (in a practice round, he'll dick around a bit more). If you do cheat, he gets incredibly annoyed. Case in point with Caleb in episode 28 of ''Let's Play Minecraft''.
* TheBet: He's fond of bets which are either easily accomplished or outright crazy. For example, one bet with Jack involved winning six rounds in tennis. The loser has to lick Gus' shingles infected leg. [[spoiler:He lost.]]
** He also had a bet with Michael that if he can finish off a five pound gummy bear, he'll give Michael $500, but if Michael couldn't finish it in one sitting, then he'll owe Gavin $100. [[spoiler:He won.]]
*** Gavin also bets Michael $100 to drink an entire bottle of barbecue sauce. [[spoiler:He lost.]] Michael is the usual target of his food related bets until Jeremy enters the picture, just because they're the ones who have the strongest stomachs and are most willing to overeat or eat things that other people wouldn't dream of.
** Had a long-standing bet with Ryan over making it through videos with flubbing a word. [[spoiler:He wins but loses all of his money betting Ryan that he can't throw a knife into a wall, which he does with ease.]] This skill later comes back when they ask Ryan to throw a suction-cup dildo so it sticks on the wall – with a full rotation in the air, which [[spoiler:he also does on the first try and without looking.]]
* BewareTheSillyOnes:
** Whether he's going down very quickly or panicking and shooting his teammates in the back, it's been joked that Gavin is more dangerous to the other players than to anyone else. This was actually proven ''true'' in the ''Dying Light'' session where he played as the zombie, and effortlessly wiped the floor with all his coworkers before they realized what was happening.
** Gavin is also very good at gaming, but admits that he intentionally screws up and plays the role to make better, more entertaining videos. When he actually sets himself to winning, you had better look out.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Millie. After learning that Millie's old dentist was arrested for pedophilia[[note]]Millie was not involved in it at all - her mother Griffin was around at all times[[/note]], Gavin's first question was [[ImpliedDeathThreat "Is he still alive?"]]
* BigNo: A staple of his, normally when he’s very close to victory before he either screws up, someone kills him, or he loses the lead, notably in London Olympics Part 3. He doesn't take it well after seeing Michael supplant him for third place.
-->'''Gavin:''' Oh, you overtook me. '''NOOOO!'''
* BigWhat: Three, in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 35.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Downplayed, though it's noticeable that Gavin is fairly consistent on what he considers okay and not okay, it's just sort of odd. Most notably he {{Troll}}s freely and and [[CombatPragmatist considers anything to undermine his opponents' chances of winning]] acceptable, as long as it's within the rules. ''Breaking'' the rules, however, is punishable by termination with extreme prejudice, as Caleb found out the hard way. He's also weird about what his standards are for VideoGameCrueltyPotential- he hates the idea of in-game animal cruelty and even lashes out at jokes about it, but he has no problem with wholesale slaughter of NPC's for both pragmatic purposes and for his own amusement (to the point of being counter-productive).
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: He and Michael have this dynamic in ''Rage Quit''. To what extent Gavin's stupidity is genuine or deliberate to try to get under [[HairTriggerTemper Michael's]] skin is unclear.
* BrainsAndBrawn: The Brains of Team Nice Dynamite. A good example is their alliance in the "Potions" episode of ''Let's Play Minecraft'', where he calls the shots since Michael doesn't know how to brew potions or navigate the Nether at all, but he's completely useless at fighting and needs Michael there to babysit him.
* BreakoutCharacter: Just look at the length of this page and compare it to any one of the other Characters/{{Achievement Hunter}}s. He was also the only Hunter to have a Creator page here until Michael received one of his own. Gavin is one of the most consistent podcast guests, has directed a season of ''Red vs. Blue'' (and voiced a minor character in it), runs ''The Slow Mo Guys'', voices Vav in ''X-Ray and Vav'' (a character he created through a flub in a Halo 4 achievement guide intro), had a major role in ''Lazer Team'', and voiced a minor character in ''RWBY'' (as a member of Michael's character's team after initially trying out for Junior). At this point, he's arguably the most famous and recognizable member of the company, and was once the company's Creative Director, Burnie's former position.
* BriefAccentImitation: Frequently done ''to'' him by damn near everyone. Some of the accents range from good (Geoff and Michael), to passable (Barbara), to [[StylisticSuck deliberately bad]] (Burnie), to outright awful (Miles, Jack and Brandon).
* BrilliantButLazy: From what we've seen of his CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass moments, he's surprisingly effective when he puts his mind to it. He just doesn't bother to most of the time, either downplaying his competence for laughs or [[DickDastardlyStopsToCheat wasting valuable time]] [[{{Troll}} screwing with the others' efforts to win]]. He has an awful victory rate at ''Let's Play Minecraft'' despite his thorough knowledge of the game because he doesn't bother to improve his execution like his terrible combat skills. It's worth noting, however, that a lot of his laziness is part of his brilliancy, at least earlier on in Achievement Hunter's span: he knows his failures make the videos more funny, and is willing to sacrifice his personal win to draw people to their content.
* BritishStuffiness: PlayedForLaughs.
* BrutalHonesty: From time to time.
-->'''Gavin:''' ''[after 20-plus minutes]'' How has nobody found diamond yet? What is everybody ''doing?''\\
'''Michael:''' What are ''YOU'' doing?!\\
'''Gavin:''' [[{{Griefer}} I'm trying to kill people!]]
* BuffySpeak: His status as a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} causes him to lapse into this from time to time, especially if he's trying to make a point but can't seem to think of the right words to say. This tends to make everyone else think he's an idiot.
* BullyingADragon: In Episode 6 of ''VS'', he challenges Ray to ''Black Ops 2''... a game he has limited experience with while Ray has prestiged the game ''6 times'' (and he knew it too). Gavin actually managed to do surprisingly well at a tomahawk-and-ballistic-knife-only duel but still, Ray predictably took it in the end.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He's [[WildCard unpredictable]], [[{{Angrish}} prone to bouts of gibberish]], and almost never wins the Tower of Pimps when it comes to ''Minecraft'', but he's also a successful [[{{Overcrank}} high-speed cinematographer]], having done work for, among other things, ''Film/SherlockHolmesAGameOfShadows'' and ''Series/TopGearUK''.
** It's hit the point where Jack at panels will often need to answer questions and attempted jokes by the audience about Gavin's supposed stupidity by responding that, while he is silly and isn't necessarily great at enunciating his ideas (especially about science or philosophy) he is one of the smartest people at Rooster Teeth. Burnie has even said that while Gavin is incredibly smart, his thought process tends to make him sound dumber than he is.
* ButtMonkey: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9eS8PtfmRg Ever since Headlight Fluid...]]
** Biggest example, after winning an obstacle course in ''Minecraft'', Geoff comes over to congratulate him, shakes his hand...and punches him in the stomach. While chased around by a gang of mobs. And killed by a lag.
** Trying to get the "On a Rail" achievement during ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 2. The other guys absolutely refused to let him take it. Michael even ''physically tackles'' him to the ground, leaving a scar on him, and Gavin ''still'' gets the achievement. Then they jokingly contemplate getting him banned from Xbox Live.
** Michael and Geoff burning his house down with lava and chasing him down as payback for Episode 1, though running into a cactus was [[TooDumbToLive idiotic]].
** Becomes this in "Let's Play Black Ops 2 Part 2". He gets revived by Ray and dies ten seconds later. He does so poorly that he is regularly insulted by everyone [[SelfDeprecation including himself]].
** Every time the guys knock him off the sky blocks in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 37. His frustration is plentiful.
** Gavin getting mugged is a RunningGag in GTA, and is something that every other Hunter (mostly Geoff and Ryan) has done to him at some point or another. He got spared in Enter the Dragonface, as the muggers that episode were more often chasing Kerry. It gets to the point where, when people try to call a mugger on him, they almost invariably can't because someone else already has.
*** He was once mugged in a plane as he was taking off, which the mugger then stole as his getaway vehicle.
*** He once got mugged on the side of Mount Chiliad; Jeremy killed him when his bike tangled with said mugger.
*** A woman near Gavin suddenly became a mugger during Crime Lord; Geoff asked if Gavin's phone was out, thinking of giving the mugger a point.
*** A mugger got Gavin while in Geoff's Bifta. Geoff named the mugger Gary, who was then killed by Ray.
*** Got mugged driving a firetruck, leading to a hilarious miscommunication as neither Michael (the VIP) nor Jeremy knew the mugger was driving.
*** Got mugged atop the D of the Vinewood sign; fell to his death.
** To be honest, just about every time in ''Minecraft'' or any other game where it's clear Gavin's about to win, everyone else will put their differences aside to screw Gavin over the victory. This is why his first, and for a long time, only victory was when it was a one-on-one battle.
--> '''Michael, during a GTA race''': What the hell is ''Gavin'' doing in first? Jack, Ryan, let's fix this.
** It becomes almost sad to see Gavin put through so much of this if it wasn't PlayedForLaughs and if he didn't earn so much of it. It would be sadder if he seemed more invested in winning than he is, and it's been toned down a lot in recent years.
* CallBack: "Who's the best archer in LetsPlay? Mark Nutt!" Referring to their London Olympics video where Gavin played a guy named Mark Nutt during an archery course. Spawned a shirt (which Gavin wore to foreshadow his game of choice in his second VS match against Ray).
* CameraFiend: A self-admitted camera nerd, his passion for photography is what got him interested in {{Overcrank}} and his career as a cinematographer. He's worked almost exclusively as a slo-mo cameraman outside of his work with Rooster Teeth, and he has a very in-depth knowledge of how cameras work, how to edit footage, and how to capture the best photos and videos to begin with. It's been frequently mentioned on the RT Podcast and in Achievement Hunter videos that he always has his phone or a camera in hand, filming and photographing everything, and most episodes of 'Between the Games' are filmed by him unless they're a kickie-doo of some variety. He's worked on several movies, and since he never went to University, it was his slow motion camerawork that earned him enough fame to get a work visa in America. It's likely that, if he hadn't been able to work with Rooster Teeth, he would have become a massively successful cameraman at a much younger age than anyone else in the field [[labelnote:*]] He already was, considering he began at 16, and he says it was unpleasant because so many older people resented him for it [[/labelnote]], and he's still contacted by agencies who need slow motion work done due to his near 20 years of experiences with a large variety of slow motion cameras and skill with shooting.
* CantCatchUp: In ''Minecraft'', he's only ever won the Tower of Pimps ''[[spoiler:six times]]''. Every other time, he gets screwed by the other Achievement Hunters, or he ends up screwing himself over, partly due to {{Troll}}ing and partly due to genuine incompetence. [[spoiler:Until a [[DarkHorseVictory come-from-behind victory]] at the end of Mad King Ryan Part 2 (Episodes 89-90) gets him his ''third'' Tower and first kingship.]]
* CatchPhrase: Any noise related to pain, or him laughing after trolling. Alternatively, British slang. He used to catch a lot of flak for it in the first few years of AH, but the other guys now regularly use some of it themselves and accept it unless he says something that's extremely wild even for him. A lot of these are his variations of swearing, since he tries to avoid typical American swears like "fuck."
** "Tease it..." Even the other guys say it occasionally.
** "[[OhCrap MICHAEL!]]"
** "What is Game Night?"
** "Ayoooooh!"
** "Front flip for style!"
** "Hi, Michael."
** "Should we do an intro?"
** "Why would you do that?" Whenever someone, mostly [[VitriolicBestBuds Michael]], attacks him in some fashion.
** "Sausages!" and other [[GoshDangitToHeck minced oaths]]. Sometimes adds various other English breakfast food items like "Sausages and beans!"
** "''Today would be great!''" Whenever someone or something is going too slow for his liking.
** "SUCK MY [[{{Pun}} NUTT]]!" (see above) or "SUCK MY NOB!"
** "What are you on about?". A rather British way to say "What are you talking about?" that he says frequently.
** "Are you having a laugh?" Similar to above, a British version of "Are you kidding me?"
** "-Wot?" Again, a more British way of asking "What?" that in Gavin's case usually follows his confusing himself mid-explanation.
** "Bugger me!" A [[BilingualBonus just-as-rude]], but British way of saying "fuck me" that he's prone to saying from time to time, especially when playing horror games.
** "Bollocks!" or some variation thereof, such as "What the bollocks?!"
* CheatersNeverProsper: In Ender Pearl Race, Gavin switched his name with Jack, so when Jack stacked the tower, the guys were fooled into thinking that Gavin won the Tower. Until Jack realized that Gavin switched the names, so Geoff declared Jack the winner.
** In a more devastating manner, his blatant game throwing in "Cops 'n Crooks Part 3" lead to Gavin being tossed off of Team Lads for a few weeks.
* TheChewToy: When he's not being the ButtMonkey, he can be this as some of the abuse that gets inflicted on him in the live-action videos makes himself and the others laugh. He usually takes the antics and abuse in stride, especially if it's self-inflicted or funny, which leads to increasing his popularity with the fanbase. It's been mentioned that even existing within the same room as Jeremy will cause Jeremy to randomly shove him.
** Lindsay has stated that most of the time, the abuse that gets hurled onto him is in response to him deliberately annoying the others to the point where they'll dish it right back at him.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Much more so in early videos, where he could be counted on to backstab or screw over anyone he teamed up without fail. Now that he's toned it down, he's become even more dangerous than before since [[WildCard no one can predict if he's going to screw them over or just play normally]].
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}:
** PlayedForLaughs, but some stuff he says really makes no sense. In his second appearance on ''Always Open'', Barbara had this to say:
--->'''Barbara:''' I am fascinated with the way your mind works.
--->'''Gavin:''' Mine specifically?
** He actually threw up, ''twice'', in the middle of a LetsPlay, because he saw '''bread'''. Even if it was the thoroughly-unappealing wet bread, needing to actually throw up because of it is a little over the top.
** The wrestler he made for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMYh_ylHMDs "Let's Play WWE '13"]] has to be seen to be believed.
--->'''Gavin:''' I tried to make a Creeper, but things very rapidly got out of hand.
** He tends to ask stupid questions that the rest of the staff mercilessly mock and never let him live down, which would be considered just childlike curiosity if they weren't so ''weird''. It's gotten to the point where Burnie plays a game on the podcast, ''Gavin or Google'', comparing Gavin's stupid questions to Google searches. It should be noted that even Burnie admits that over half of Gavin's "dumb" questions underlie some legitimate or even insightful thought process, but the stupid way he always ''phrases'' it still makes him a CloudCuckooLander.
*** For example, "why does a triangle add up to turning the other way?" is likely some sort of question about how the angles of a triangle always add up to 180 degrees...just...not phrased as such. In the same vein, "what if your legs didn't know that they were legs" is likely wondering how cells know where exactly they're supposed to go and what functions they're performing, but...
** Trying to catalog all of Gavin's silly/nonsensical sayings would take up the better part of his section on this page, so [[http://shitgavinsays.tumblr.com/ here is a link ]] to a blog that collects them. That being said, this one statement in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 87 makes everything make a lot more sense...
--->'''Gavin:''' Do you actually ''control'' the words that come out of your mouth? Like, do you filter the thoughts that leave your brain?
** Ironically, when having conversations with fellow oddballs Lindsay, Chris, or Andrew Panton on the podcasts, Gavin ends up being the saner one in those conversations due to at least having some grounding in reality, just very poorly worded as noted above.
* CombatPragmatist:
** He kills Geoff, Michael and Jack while they were all distracted in ''Literature/TheHungerGames Let's Play Minecraft'' episode. [[spoiler:It gave him his first Tower win]]
** Managed to kill Ray with a diamond pickaxe just as he started stacking the Tower in episode 37. [[spoiler:Then he stacked the Tower [[IdiotBall on Ray's spot]].]]
** Will generally sink to any depths to interfere with his competitors' progress (as long as it's within the rules), though oftentimes he'll just admit that he's being a {{Troll}}.
** His greatest moment of this, though, comes in Episode 90. [[spoiler:The final challenge is to kill a diamond-clad Kerry in the maze below Ryan's house. Gavin and Ray both collect diamond armor and weaponry; when Ray finds Kerry first, Gavin lurks just around a hallway. After Kerry takes down Ray, Gavin quickly downs a swiftness potion before rushing in and beating down Kerry, killing him and claiming his third Tower!]]
* ComedicSociopathy: Discussed this with Geoff.
-->'''Geoff:''' Have you ever done something that was funny, that may or may not have had a negative effect on someone else, and felt bad about it?
-->'''Gavin:''' No.
-->'''Geoff:''' Yeah, me either. Funny's funny.
* TheComicallySerious: In "Mixed Messages", he's reciting bad news to Geoff all the way through the short, maintaining a completely serious demeanour the whole time. It's hilarious.
* CommonalityConnection: All the AH boys have team names with all the other main members, including some for groups of three or four.
** [[StuffBlowingUp Plan]] [[AlliterativeName G]] with Geoff.
** Team Nice Dynamite with Michael. Alternately, they're the Play Pals, bois, or any number of other team names they have for themselves.
** Team Lads with Michael and Ray[=/=]Jeremy.
** Team OGG/Congress, in reference to one of the old offices, with Geoff and Jack.
** Team Crazy, Mad, and Stupid with Ryan and Michael.
** Team [[VideoGame/{{Trials}} Trial]] & Error with Jack.
** Team Love N' Stuff with Ryan.
** Team Boston Tea Party (formerly Team Little Britain) with Jeremy.
** Plan g (lower case g) with Geoff and Jeremy.
** Chungə with Fiona, mainly in TTT. [[GoneHorriblyWrong It doesn't go very well most of the time.]]
* ConfusionFu:
** Sometimes resorts to this if someone else has a strong advantage over him. How does he negate Ray's large experience advantage with Black Ops multiplayer? By running around like a complete noob so Ray couldn't predict his actions (though Ray still won in the end).
** Works again in his favor for the ''Let's Play Madden: Superbowl Edition '13'' episode, where he is Team Lad's quarterback. Seeing as how little he understands of conventional U.S. football strategy, he just does whatever he wants, making his actions impossible to predict to everyone ([[WildCard not that's he's easy to predict normally]]). This incomprehensible strategy [[CrazyEnoughToWork actually works]].
** In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5PItlAkB90 GTA V: Top Fun Times]], Gavin's refusal to stick to the most direct path to the goal combined with his inability to navigate traffic, drive in a straight line, or even ''stay on his bike most of the time'', made him a nightmare for the Hunters (namely Jack) to track and target.
--->'''Jack:''' Where the fuck did he go? You were supposed to be right in front of me! You have a straight road, yet somehow you were gone!
--->'''Ryan:''' Good job, Gavin! Your ineptitude has thrown him off the scent, well done!
* ConstantlyCurious: He's abidingly inquisitive to say the least, [[CloudCuckooLander often in outlandish or unprecedented manner.]] His coworkers usually notice that he's extremely smart and always trying to learn, just in a very strange and unique way.
* ContinuityNod:
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 13 has him re-visiting the ''Wipeout'' course that they made in episode 10.
** In a VS episode against Michael, while playing Chopper vs Chopper in GTA IV, Michael suggested he swim to one of the motorcycle checkpoints, referencing Gavin's method of trying to escape in an earlier Cops vs Crooks episode.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: At gaming in general. Quite a few times in ''Minecraft'', he would have won the Tower of Pimps if he didn't try to {{Troll}} the other guys, or if he had thought out his plans just a bit more.
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' Episode 23 fully cements him as one. With Ray eliminated early, Gavin takes full advantage over the suddenly-even playing field. Throughout the course of the episode, Gavin kills Jack from behind, dodges Jack's attempts at burning him with lava, survives Michael's attempt at eliminating him, kills Michael and Geoff while they were distracted, and ''finally'' wins the Tower of Pimps.
** His performance in ''Halo'' isn't actually too bad either. While he doesn't quite reach Ray or Ryan's level, he always manages to reach third or fourth in their games, with a respectable K/D. It's been commented on ''Off Topic'' that he's reasonably skilled enough to carry the team during their ''Halo''-themed month videos, including Team Lads' victory in a Capture the Flag match.
** Exaggerated in "Let's Play Crimson Map Pack Part 2". The game ends in a CurbStompBattle for not Ray, not Ryan, but Gavin, winning by 190 points and holding the lead for the entire game. The Mantis may have helped.
** Check out his handle as the quarterback in LetsPlay Madden. Being British, he has no idea what American Football is like, so he's pretty much a disaster most of the way through. On the other hand, his completion percentage (how many of his passes get caught by his teammates) is ''incredible''.
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 53: Having taken an enormous lead in the first part of the Shopping List challenge (episode 52), then lost it, the guys all focus on Ryan's, Geoff's, and Jack's attempts at finding the last item they need. Meanwhile, Gavin discreetly finds enough items to make a cake and wins the Tower for the second time.
** [[spoiler:He's won two rounds in a row of ''VS'' so far, beating Michael in ''VideoGame/GuitarHero 2'' and beating Ryan in ''VideoGame/{{Divekick}}''. No Ray by a long stretch, but he's really showing off his chops here.]]
** One episode of ''Let's Play Grand Theft Auto IV'', "Cops 'n Crooks Part 4", has Gavin as the boss, and in order to avoid being killed, he ''jumps into the water and proceeds to hide out on a buoy, giving him an advantage because you can't use weapons while swimming, and an excellent vantage point to shoot from.'' [[spoiler:His team would have won the round, had he swam towards shore, as instructed by Michael, while the other team was scrambling to obtain and board a boat.]]
** In ''Let's Play Splinter Cell: Blacklist'', Gavin is nearly unstoppable with the drone ability.
** In ''The Gauntlet'', after not being helpful in the ''Halo'' game, Gavin manages to [[spoiler:narrowly keep Team AH in for the future episodes by winning the race against Justine]].
** Is second only to Ray in wins and win percentage in ''VS'' (as of Episode 48 on January 30, 2014).
** He's actually a fairly competent ''Videogame/{{Hitman}}'' player and shows quite a bit of knowledge about the game's mechanics. In the Let's Watch of an elusive target level, it's noted that he's at the maximum mastery level. He killed the target in question before the game even finished briefing him.
** In ''Rooftop Dance Party: Murder'', he manages to win several rounds as the killer, especially since a new rule was implemented that random killings resulted in being hit with a pool noodle. Thanks to no one wanting to risk it enough to kill him first, he lived long enough to take out everyone or lose to the final survivor during his stints as the killer.
** In a second Let's Play of ''Astroneer'', he successfully guides the others into accomplishing their goals after he apparently spent some time playing it on his own. Ryan was unnerved by how well he guided them and begged him to not derail them.
** Whenever they play Towerfall Gavin almost always takes the victory by a wide margin.
** In ''The Weird Place'' miniseries, he shows quite a bit of creative problem-solving, especially since the titular weird place is an elaborate {{Cloudcuckooland}}, fitting for someone like himself or fellow {{Cloudcuckoolander}} Lindsay.
** For ''Hardcore Mini Golf'', he spends his rounds mostly dicking around, like putting the ball off his back and stomach (because he was dressed as "turf") or at odd angles. However, his carefree playing style [[spoiler:allowed him to win the entire competition from the sheer fact that ''nobody'' expected him to get that far and his opponents played much worse, especially after he lucked out in obtaining an air horn to throw off his opponent.]] During a stream discussing the show, it was revealed that Gavin and Fiona had played their entire round ''drunk''.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight[=/=]DumbassHasAPoint: Oftentimes people will dismiss Gavin's weird-sounding claims as Gavin being [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Gavin]] then realize that he was, in fact, right all along. After incidents like [[https://youtu.be/gkGmwNiRQb8 Gavin insisting that "Pubert Addams" was a real character]] (and he is), it's gotten to the point where Jack has started just agreeing blindly when Gavin says something that sounds like it might be dumb since "he's almost always right anyway." Despite this, the others often ignore his observations because even when he's right, he still sounds like an idiot.
** He has an extremely heated coin toss argument with Ryan where they're both correct, but Gavin explains himself less clearly. Ryan and Michael argue that, out of three tosses, the probability of getting heads after getting heads twice is still 50% with heads or tails (HHT or HHH). Gavin is arguing that the probability of getting three heads is less than getting ''anything else combined'' (HHH vs. HHT, HTH, THH, etc.), which he's right about, he just lacks the language to get his point across.
** He once questioned (and tried to defend) the idea that you could make a triangle out of three right angles. You actually ''can'' if you draw the triangle on a sphere or other non-Euclidean plane, and you can tell that he tries to reference this but is horrible at explaining what he's picturing.
** A fan put together [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWXqlgr624s a complilation]] tallying every time the AH crew managed to guess which players were traitors/killers in the various ''[[VideoGame/GarrysMod GMod]]'' modes (whether by actual deduction or blind luck). Despite a poll on who would have the highest success rate pointing to it being Ryan by a wide margin, the video reveals that Gavin's instincts have led him to guess correctly more often -- 22.4% to Ryan's 16.4%.
** The "run down a hill" theory he has for how to survive skydiving without a parachute isn't actually too far-fetched, and is similar to actual strategies used in extreme life or death situations. Though everyone else continuosly argues this is stupid and wouldn't do anything to slow him down, a ''very'' slight incline is what it would take to do exactly this, as contact between the person and the incline wouldn't cause a direct impact the way a flat surface would. You're limbs will definitely shatter, but you'll live, which is the best case scenario in these situations.
* CutenessProximity: Show him adorable animals (especially cats) and he starts audibly {{Squee}}ing with delight.
** During the ''Sky Factory'' Let's Play, Ryan pulls him aside to show him a rabbit in a top hat, [[https://roosterhunter.tumblr.com/post/167608278569/ryan-and-gavin-gushing-over-the-gent-bunny-was-so leading him]] to gush over it.
** He's posted several short clips of himself on his social media cooing in baby talk to his cats and actually {{Squee}}d when Michael showed him a live video of his new baby daughter in her crib at home.
* DeadpanSnarker: Sometimes; it's a sign that the others are rubbing off on him.
* DemolitionsExpert: The only thing he's better at than making the ''Minecraft'' maps with Geoff is trashing them afterwards, exemplified with his [[StuffBlowingUp "Plan G"]] underneath Achievement City. It seems like his unofficial job in Achievement Hunter is to wreck things, for better or for worse.
** He [[CurbStompBattle stomps]] Lindsay in Catlateral Damage during her VS debut. Even in a game he's never played before, Gavin can still excel if it's about knocking everything off of shelves and tables (still wrecking stuff).
* {{Demonization}}: He's not one to cry or appear to feel much sympathy, which prompts the guys to call him a sociopath, as PlayedForLaughs.
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: He could have won ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 14 if he had simply ''taken the damn Tower and ran back home''. Instead, he hid underground, stacked it back together, left to get some health and ended up dying, causing it to, basically, go missing.
** According to Geoff, Gavin probably would have won episode 9 of ''Let's Play Minecraft'' if he hadn't spent all his time trolling people. [[JustifiedTrope He does comment how it livens up the video]], so this one's possibly PlayedForLaughs.
** While he wasn't close to winning, Gavin basically forfeits episode 40's challenge (Dig Down, in which the competitors had to locate/craft four golden blocks hidden in a large cube) when he wastes his time building a Nether Portal so he could search for Zombie Pigmen and loot their gold equipment...forgetting that the challenge was being played on Peaceful and had ''no mobs''.
** During ''Let's Play GTA IV'' "Bike Bat", Michael takes a bad turn and falls off his bike. Gavin decides to chase Michael down and bat him as he's getting back on his bike... rather than drive past him and take his place. Not only does he fail to kill Michael, but this act lands Gavin in last place for the third game in a row.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Certain members of the FanDumb have not only invoked NeverLiveItDown, they've founded hate groups, started sending Gavin tons of hate mail and even ''written death threats'' for the odd slip up. While AH regularly teases him on their own, even they draw the line at some of the fan reactions, and they'll readily defend him from implications that he's stupid or unworthy of anything he has.
* DitzyGenius: or GeniusDitz, [[DependingOnTheWriter depending on the subject]].
** The other AH members do claim he ''is'' that stupid, however. Looking at DickDastardlyStopsToCheat, it's easy to both see their point and imagine he is taking aspects of this and [[PlayedForLaughs doing it for the sake of livening up the videos]]. As one Youtube comment succinctly put it, "Gavin Free: idiot in common sense, genius in entertainment".
** When they discuss filming and cameras on the podcasts, it's obvious he knows what he's talking about. Even better, all of his cinematography knowledge comes from on the job training. He goes back to being a CloudCuckoolander very quickly afterwards, though.
** The things that Gavin's good at, he's ''great'' at. For instance, he's likely number one in ''Minecraft'' mechanical knowledge since Lava Wall revealed that he's the ''only'' one on the crew who knows how to make a TNT Cannon. It's just he's pretty bad at everything else and his general stupidity and lack of common sense get in the way of him making the best use of his knowledge. Said TNT Cannon would have worked if he hadn't told Ray to press his button too early, resulting in the whole thing (literally) blowing up in their faces.
** Gavin's reputation isn't helped by having problems properly verbalizing his thoughts and a tendency to panic under pressure. About half of his stupid "Gavin or Google" questions are in fact based on a legitimate or even intelligent thought process, but the strange way he states the question makes it seem idiotic.
* DoesNotLikeGuns: He's mentioned this a few times, which is part of the reason that Dan handles them in videos (that, and the fact that Dan, as a former solider in the British Army, is far more qualified to be handling them). However, it's less of an excessive dislike and more a combination of culture shock with the relatively gun-loving America and basic common sense at handling and being in vicinity of an extremely deadly firearm.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Gavin's performance in ''GTA'' and other driving games in a nutshell. As per usual, it's impossible to tell how much he's screwing up intentionally and how much is genuine incompetence at driving or piloting. Considering that he actually does not have a driver's license and cannot drive in real life, it apparently translates into this in-game.
* EndearinglyDorky: For all his trollish tendencies, he seems quite shy and friendly. One [=YouTube=] comment sums it up:
-->''"Gavin is the most adorable little asshole ever."''
* EpicFail: Quite a few.
** Anything he does during their LetsPlay of ''Worms'' (and its sequels). Mostly when it involves accidentally killing his own guys, or his ridiculous attempts at trying to kill the ''other'' guys..
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 17, he ran back to Achievement City, grabbed iron armor and an iron sword, and hid inside Geoff's house, waiting for Geoff to show up. As Geoff walked up to his diamond block, with the Tower of Pimps in hand, Gavin opened the door... and it closed before he got out. Geoff stacked the tower and won the round, then killed him with a diamond sword.
** He used bone meal to grow a red mushroom. Once it grew, it trapped him inside, and he took damage from it.
** When Ray turned Gavin's Tower of Pimps into a giant upside-down L, Gavin tried to reform it back to a straight tower, but he accidentally puts the last block ''on the wall two blocks away''.
** Gavin does not do well in "Let's Play Black Ops 2 Part 2". Several times Ray runs over to revive him and he dies a few seconds later.
** He went to the edge of the mushroom stack in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 35, wordlessly taunting Jack into punching him or falling off the mushroom. Gavin fell off.
** His greatest EpicFail came in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 37, where he stacked the Tower of Pimps... on ''Ray's'' Obsidian block.
--->'''Geoff:''' Gavin has just given Ray the victory! You ''moron''!
** When he faced Ray in episode 6 of ''VS'', he ended up picking ''VideoGame/CallOfDutyBlackOpsII''. Which he had little experience in, and which Ray had prestiged six times.
** [[spoiler:Episode 13 of ''VS'' with a return to the 2012 Olympics game...just all of it. In the first round (Archery) for losing to Ray by 30 points and completely defiling Mark Nutt's name, the second round (the triple jump) for running over the line and getting no points ALL SIX TIMES, and the third round (Shot Put) where he does rather well but still loses. [[TooDumbToLive Because apparently he forgot the last time they played the game Ray broke the world record at that event.]]]]
** Any time Gavin jumps into a driver's seat in ''Let's Play Grand Theft Auto IV'', it's bound to be this. His [[DrivesLikeCrazy complete inability to drive]] [[TheLoad tends to screw over his teammates]], or at least anyone trying to ride with him. Case in point, driving the speed boat onto land during Part 3 of Cops 'n Crooks, ''immediately'' trapping the getaway car at the start of a round by launching it off a ramp onto a lower ledge (in the same episode), ''crashing the team's helicopter'' trying to collect Michael in the Co-Op mode, etc. It's either the respective episode's SugarWiki/FunnyMoments, or fuel for his {{Hatedom}}.
** ''Let's Play Grand Theft Auto V: Most Dangerous Game'' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQODqP00Fy8]] features an astonishingly hilarious one, wherein Gavin gets a turn as the prey with immediate access to a car while the rest of the gang is stuck in the marshes...and he crashes into a swamp almost instantly, then burns the rest of his head start swimming the length of it while the guys easily overtake him on foot. The crew couldn't believe it.
** In ''Let's Play - Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?'', Gavin couldn't figure out a simple word problem[[note]]If Joe won 462 of the 832 collectible card games he played, how many more wins than losses did he have?[[/note]], and had to cheat off of the NPC student to get the correct answer. Then the other guys had to explain the question to him, because he ''still'' didn't get it.
** At one point, he had to answer a question about what day of the month the fourth Wednesday would be. All the answers were in multiples of seven, meaning that the only possible answer was the 28th, since it had to be at least four weeks in.
** In ''Let's Play Trivial Pursuit'', the guys had to guess how many wives Henry VIII had - the answer (six) is fairly common knowledge to British people and Gavin ''immediately'' gets smug and gloats about he'd get the right answer because, quote, "it's my country". [[http://youtu.be/PFoKBLAx3Xw?t=12m53s Guess what happens?]]
--->'''Michael:''' Looks like you don't know your own country, Bitch!
** Goodness gracious, his... knowledge of ''Franchise/StarWars'', as outlined during ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkFFP7JwYw8 Star Wars Battlefront 2]]''. The other five in the video are absolutely incredulous.
--> '''Gavin (About the series being a long time ago and a long way away from Earth):''' They should've put ''that'' in the beginning of the movie!
--> '''Everyone else:''' ''THEY DID!''
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: According to the forums anyway, most of them would have a go. "He is pretty. And his hair looks incredibly soft."
** Lindsay said in an episode of ''Podcast/InternetBox'' that while most people might be worried about their girlfriends going off with Gavin, she has to worry about Michael doing it.
** He's also mentioned that "I never get attention like that unless it's from dudes" during one story where he [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIOlQtR_z3s caught the eye of a male TV chef]].
** Burnie's wife Ashley has recounted that during a company dinner party, a very drunk Burnie had hallucinated Gavin in an empty chair that was next to him and proceeded to make out with the empty space, thinking it was him.
** The RT Short "Secret Door" has Burnie telling Gavin that he's attractive and that it stands to reason that even someone like Gus would hit on him.
** He was even propositioned by a guy high on cocaine, especially since [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guooewvTa6E the guy barged in]] on him going to the bathroom.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's a troll, but he usually won't outright break the rules. Also, even though he's by far the most guilty of VideoGameCrueltyPotential out of everyone, even he disapproves of Ryan's treatment of Edgar.
* EvilBrit: Plays this role in a lot of early Let's Play videos from Achievement Hunter. since they were serious achievement guides or goal-based gameplay, many lacked significant entertainment value, so Gavin created some by [[{{Troll}} fucking everything up]]. He has toned this down significantly to the point that it only shows up once in a while, due to Achievement Hunter videos finding their comedic feet,
* FallenHero: After the events of "Cops 'n Crooks Part 3", Michael kicks Gavin off of Team Lads, furious of the fact that Gavin cost them so many rounds. He lets him return during RTX '13, but on a temporary basis. He then restores his membership, explaining the ban was temporary.
* FriendlySniper: He's shown to be ''very'' skilled with a bow in ''Minecraft'', but that doesn't detract from his goofy personality.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: He ''loves'' cats, particularly Joe the Cat and Egg Bodge in Austin, and Lloyd back in England. There's also a video in existence of him trying to save a pigeon from Lloyd, and he and Meg adopted four cats of their own: Smee, Columbo, Ziggy, and Q.
* GagNose: Everyone, [[SelfDeprecation himself included]], have made tons of jokes about his nose, and animated forms of him, including his own Mii, exaggerate it. An ''[[WebAnimation/RoosterTeethAnimatedAdventures RTAA]]'' was [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iphtyECMWzM even made]] about it and [[https://youtu.be/XtuA80XJE5c?t=4m51s he once wore a costume of it]]. Geoff even has a to-scale MarkOfShame of Gavin's nose on his leg because Geoff lost the ''Schooled'' bet to him.
-->'''Michael, after Gavin mentioned falling and hitting his nose:''' I like how his nose is so big, he doesn't even fall on his face, he falls on his nose.
-->'''Jeremy:''' ''[in the Minecraft chat]'' Want to look more like Gavin? www.[=NoseNoBoundaries=].com
-->'''Gavin:''' [[SelfDeprecation I've got nostrils for days.]]
* GameMaster: Occasionally is a joint GM with Geoff for ''Things to Do in...'' and ''Let's Play Minecraft''.
* GeneralFailure: The... gentle way to describe his performance as a quarterback in Madden. That being said, when Jack manages to get crushed ''by'' Gavin as quarterback in the 2013 Super Bowl special... that's really saying something.
** And then there's his performance in ''VideoGame/{{Worms}}'', where his ridiculous strategies, poor use of controls, or just bad luck end with him killing most of his own worms while doing minimal damage to his intended targets.
* GenreSavvy: He has a tendency to remove himself from the ''Minecraft'' map so he can't be found.
** Episode 23 really hammers home his expertise at ''Minecraft'' in general. Instead of running blindly like the others, Gavin constantly looks over his shoulders and changes direction almost on a fly, to avoid mobs and to find the other guys so he could hack at them from behind.
** In that same episode, Jack was trying to pour lava on Gavin as payback for killing him so early. Gavin uses the lava as a light source for the night. In fact, the new light spawned chicken all over lava; Gavin quickly killed them and took their meat for him to replenish his hunger (and keep his health intact).
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 31. He kills every sheep that he steals wool from, partly because [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential he wants to]] and partly because he knows sheep regrow wool, which denies the other guys a chance to get wool.
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 36, everybody spawns out of the same Nether Portal. Gavin takes the time to mine the Obsidian blocks (which deactivates the portal), so he can return to the Overworld with Michael.
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 43, as well. Gavin is the first to realize that jumping into spider webs allows you to deal constant critical hits to his opponents, giving him several wins before they're torn down.
** Way back in ''Worms'' Part 2, his last worm took [[ChekhovsGun a health crate that granted 25 more health points]] to his 100. It allowed him to take two explosions, one from dynamite and another from Johnboy exploding upon dying.
** Episode 89 of ''Let's Play Minecraft'' has Gavin hiding in a tree and actually ''staying silent'' while Mad King Ryan hunted down the others. Even with the help of Kerry, he is never found despite the fact that Kerry ''was'' on top of Gavin. He admits he used "the [[TheQuietOne Jack]] tactic" and that [[CombatPragmatist having a Creeper skin helped him camouflage with the leaves]].
** Episode 90 of ''Let's Play Minecraft'' ends with [[spoiler:Gavin taking advantage of Kerry killing Ray by ambushing him before he has a chance to recover.]]
** Play Pals #8 where he and Michael played Five Nights at Freddy's. Gavin continually expressed worry about the duck, which (sure enough) started moving after a while, and also told Michael off for only watching the bottom corridors rather than checking on the animatronics often. Supplemented with a bit of GenreBlindness from both of them though, since they ignored the phone calls which act as a tutorial.
* GoshDangItToHeck: Easily the least foul-mouthed of the Hunters, primarily because he limits himself to "minor" curses (damn, arse, etc) and [[PerfectlyCromulentWord uses made up words]] in the place of the "major" curses his coworkers are fond of using.
* GratuitousGerman: Randomly yells it out during "LetsPlay Mann vs Machine Part 2".
* GroinAttack: He's been subject to quite a few painful ones, and it's one of the few injuries that he does not take as [[AmusingInjuries amusing]].
** Or not. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7uiUO4mQTI He's surprisingly cool with Barbara swinging an oar into his crotch]], even though he's had surgery to his testicles and thus they might get smashed from further damage.
* GotMeDoingIt: The originator of this occasionally; listen for random British slang creeping into the other guys' comments here and there. He's also the one who started saying "bunce," "gubbins," and other words that were ridiculed but have since become Achievement Hunter vernacular.
* HateSink: The rest of Achievement Hunter has a really hard time putting up with him at his worst; as such he's VitriolicBestBuds with pretty much everyone there.
** He's become the ''de facto'' [[DickDastardlyStopsToCheat Dick Dastardly]] of the competitive ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episodes, primarily due to bad sportsmanship and all-around underhandedness. It's gotten to the point where the other members consider Gavin winning to be the only thing worse than not winning themselves. Given that his skin is the Creeper, [[FridgeBrilliance it makes perfect sense]].
** It's extended to ''Let's Play Grand Theft Auto IV'': "Cops 'n Crooks", actually, where he gradually became a combination of a Troll and TheLoad, culminating in his aforementioned screw-ups in Part 3. Michael and Ray continuously refer to him as the best teammate of the ''other team'', because of how much of a WildCard he tends to be, and they decided to [[spoiler:temporarily]] kick him out of the Lads because of how piss-poor he was.
* TheHeart: Of Achievement Hunter.
* HelicopterBlender: When playing against Michael in ''Chopper vs. Chopper'', Gavin makes it very clear that he's not all that good at flying the ''GTA'' helicopters. Still, his [[ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy inability to shoot at Michael]] doesn't stop him from repeatedly trying to run Michael off the road or otherwise kill him purely with the helicopter itself.
* HellishCopter: As can be seen in his ''Chopper vs. Chopper" VS Michael, anytime he's handed the controls of an aircraft it usually does not go well for him (or whoever is unfortunate enough to be inside the helicopter).
* TheHero: Occasionally graduates into one for ''Minecraft'', though he's still a {{Troll}}. Most notably during [[TookALevelInBadass episode 23]] (wins the Tower of Pimps), [[MissionControl episode 25]] (guides the crew to a stronghold) and [[TheLeader episode 30]] (leads Geoff and Michael through the map).
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Michael. They got along the moment they met and have been virtually inseparable since. They started their own series ''Play Pals'', they were the first team to name themselves, and in real life, they consider each other 'bois,' a title that even Lindsay (Michael's wife) rejects because she feels like it's a special bond between the two of them. All of Rooster Teeth admits that they're one of the best teams that the company has ever created, and their relationship with each other is heartwarming both on and off camera, especially in Play Pals. [[https://teamnice-dynamite.tumblr.com/post/160454691568/lets-watch-outlast-2-part-1 It's even in how they look at each other,]] and since they met on Valentine's Day all of their posts then generally talk about each other rather than Lindsay or Meg – something that both of the women involved are okay with and appreciate.
-->'''Gus:'''Michael and Gavin are ... good apart, better together.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: In "Rain of Fire", Gavin burned himself to death with fire arrows.
** Episode 37 of ''LetsPlay Minecraft''. He kills Ray before Ray can erect the tower and since no one is near him, he can erect the tower at his spot and win the round. But he forgets to move Ray's block and erects the tower at Ray's spot, giving Ray the win.
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' Episode 44, he tries to use this to his advantage, switching his and Jack's signs because Jack has all the pieces to the Tower of Pimps. This wins Jack the LP as Michael and Ray guarded Gavin's spot thinking it was Jack's, allowing him to erect the Tower on his block uninterrupted.
* HumiliationConga: Especially with all the stuff he has to deal with in ''Minecraft''. Granted, it's [[{{Troll}} not]] [[TeamKiller entirely]] [[KleptomaniacHero undeserved,]] [[TooDumbToLive either]].
* TheHyena: He laughs almost as much as Geoff, usually making some kind of squeaking noise between his laughs.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He gets really mad when Ryan destroys the ice block that Michael was standing on. This is after he ran over to Ray's desk and messed with his controls causing Ray to fall to his death before he could mine the tower.
** In the last match of the ''VideoGame/{{Halo 4}}'' Majestic Map Pack Let's Play, he gets quite irritated at Michael winning, saying that he's being a "boring little bitch" by using the standard assault rifle all game. Note that this is the guy who [[{{Troll}} just spent that same entire game camping in any corner that he could find.]]
* HypocriticalHumor: Inverted. Despite all the stuff he does say, the guys have had a tendency to say their own stupid stuff as much as him. It's just not highlighted as much because they find it funnier.
** "Can we make we don't cheat, guys? 'Cause I wanna make this legit." Said by the guy who [[{{Troll}} screwed Ray over right as he was mining the Tower]] just one minute earlier.
* IceCreamKoan: He has [[http://youtu.be/OexMPp8x5bs a tremendous propensity for these]].
-->'''Gus:''' That's on the next [[FunTShirt t-shirt]] - "Gavin Free: [[CaptainObvious The sky is bigger than the ground]]."
* IconicOutfit: Outside of the Slow Mo Guys and weather, he's almost always seen in videos wearing a [[RummageSaleReject Rooster Teeth or Meg-related T-shirt, salmon pink Bermuda shorts, and mismatched rainbow-colored sneakers]]. In one LP in ''Gmod'', Fiona Nova snarked that she was going to introduce him to fashion sense, which Geoff took to mean that she was going to destroy Gavin's shorts. Lindsay and Fiona subsequently crafted their avatar of him in ''Videogame/TheSims4'' with pink shorts, green sneakers, and a black T-shirt with a rainbow heart[[labelnote:*]]The heart is part of Meg's logo and he often wears her branded shirts.[[/labelnote]]
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Once, [[http://youtu.be/DZhKJAgctR8 he drunkenly flirted]] with fellow team member Creator/MontyOum.
-->'''Gavin:''' Monty, I'm not attracted to dudes, but if I had a boner for you, it's really trying right now.
* IncrediblyLamePun: Makes these sometimes. Clearly he's been taking lessons from [[PungeonMaster Barbara]].
* InelegantBlubbering: Gavin is reduced to this at the end of the ''Play Pals'' episode featuring ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys'', scared out of his wits when Foxy shows up suddenly.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Falls into this every now and again, like in his explanation for why he keeps stopping to kill turtles in the LP of World of Warcraft.
-->'''Gavin:''' Oh no, I found more.\\
'''Ryan:''' Stop murdering turtles!\\
'''Gavin:''' I can't.\\
'''Ryan:''' Why?!\\
'''Gavin:''' Because it's really sad!
* InTheBack: In ''Minecraft'', Gavin is generally terrible at face-to-face brawling. That being said, he often attempts [[CombatPragmatist sneak attacks from behind when his target is preoccupied]] whenever he can get away with it. The Hunger Games episode how cunning Gavin can be, as he's the only one who keep watching his back and he takes advantage of people chasing each other to get easy backstabs on all of them.
* JokeAndReceive: Whether he is going down very quickly or panicking and shooting his teammates in the back, it's been joked that Gavin is more dangerous to the other players than to anyone else. This was actually proven ''true'' in the ''Dying Light'' session where he played as the zombie, and effortlessly wiped the floor with all his coworkers before they realized what was happening.
* KarmaHoudini:
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 1, he burned down the guys' house and indirectly caused Michael's death via lava. A Creeper shows up immediately thereafter, but Gavin punches it to death with a torch, allowing him to get away scot-free.
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 35, he destroyed Jack and Geoff's beds, which meant that they couldn't respawn near their Nether Portal once they died. [[ForTheEvulz Excited at the prospect]], he gets [[OneManArmy Michael]] to help in killing both, even though neither Jack nor Geoff were in any position to challenge him. He gets called out on it, but the episode ends in a CliffHanger, so Gavin couldn't receive any comeuppance... [[SubvertedTrope until the next episode]], where Gavin goes back to being TheLoad for Michael.
* KillItWithFire: He loves using flint and steel and buckets of lava in ''Minecraft''.
* KindheartedCatLover: He loves cats, having adopted ''four'' with Meg, and frequently posts clips of his cats on his social media. In fact, one Twitter post he made on the Slow Mo Guys's account was that in order to replicate a certain sound effect, he used a clip of Columbo purring at him.
* KleptomaniacHero: In ''Skyrim'' he tends to steal things (on rare occasion by accident) and in ''Minecraft'' he certainly isn't averse to it either, as in episode 9 of ''Let's Play Minecraft'' he steals an entire suit of armour and a diamond from Geoff... while Geoff is standing right in front of him.
* KryptoniteFactor: Wet bread. A picture of it will send Gavin into immediate dry heaves, more than one will cause him to flee the room, and being in the same vicinity of ''actual'' wet bread nearly puts him out of functionality.
* LaserGuidedKarma: He'd almost been the victim of this in the first ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode when a Creeper cornered him underground, but he beat it to death with a torch and ended up averting it. Until episode 8, where Michael kills him and steals his stuff ''twice'', calling it payback for burning down the house in episode 1.
** In episode 9, Gavin decided to kill Geoff and steal his gold. Geoff gets ''so'' fed up that he ''actually punches Gavin'' (in the leg), and he stole Gavin's own gold as well, subsequently winning the round.
** In episode 13, he killed Michael (again) during the first ten minutes while they were looking for the Tower of Pimps. Much later on, he actually found the real Tower...and then a Creeper kills him.
** After pushing Ray off in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 37, Gavin slips and falls to his death. Ray even addresses it.
** In episode 21, when Geoff fell in the well, Gavin closed up the opening and let Geoff drown. 15 seconds later, he falls inside that same damn well.
** After pushing a Villager off the roof and taunting him over it, he decides to dismantle the same house as Michael. When they hit the same block, Michael slams the pickaxe on Gavin's face.
** He lets a zombie kill an unsuspecting Jack. The zombie immediately kills Gavin thereafter.
** In the controversial Wool episodes of ''Minecraft'', Gavin takes an early lead by killing the sheep that he finds, ensuring the others have a much more difficult time in finding wool. When Michael kills all the available squid that would allow Gavin the victory, one can almost see this as the exact same tactic that he had used earlier in the Let's Play.
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 41, they're not allowed to break each others' blocks. Gavin decides to screw with Jack's glass traps by crouching repeatedly on it, making it appear that he's humping it. Jack seals the trap and says "[[RefugeInAudacity I got a Creeper! And you can't destroy my stuff!]]"
--->'''Geoff:''' I'm half-temped to allow it.
** The biggest case of it, though, has to be episode 37. Early on, Ray was about to mine the Tower of Pimps ''for the win'' when [[SoreLoser Gavin physically got up and messed with Ray's controller]], causing Ray to die. Fast forward to the end: Ray is in the middle of placing the game-winning Tower of Pimps when Gavin catches up and kills him, claiming the Tower for himself. However, Gavin ''forgets to move the Tower off of Ray's stand when he finishes erecting it'', giving Ray the victory.
** Inverted in "Shopping List" (episodes 52 and 53). Gavin plays by the rules and is the ''only'' competitor murdered by another for the express purpose of sabotaging his lead. [[spoiler:But then ''everyone else'' is hit by an incredibly odd run of bad luck, allowing Gavin to make up for lost time and eventually win the game]].
* LastStand: In ''Let's Play Grand Theft Auto IV'' "Cops and Crooks Part 2", Michael takes off in the escape helicopter and leaves Gavin behind after he hops out and tries to [[BackStab kill Michael for more money]]. He's forced into this as Team Gents races up after them. [[spoiler:He takes out Geoff before Jack kills him, giving Team Gents the win]].
* TheLeader: During ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 30, as the guys try to find a Mooshroom biome.
* LethalKlutz: After Gavin accidentally gave Kerry a HelicopterBlender in "''Let's Play GTA V – Splat X,''" Geoff remarked that he might be the only accidental SerialKiller in existence. Michael agrees, but claims [[ObfuscatingStupidity he has hidden moments of genuine serial killing too]].
* LiterallyLaughableQuestion: Some of the questions that he asks are sometimes met with howls of laughter from his co-workers at Achievement Hunter and Rooster Teeth, due to how nonsensical they are. It's gotten to the point that Burnie came up with a game called "Gavin or Google" to compare his more...interesting questions with equally stupid auto-complete Google responses.
* LovableCoward: He's an absolute wuss when it comes to horror games. During ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvYrA9rCjy4 Rage Quit - Slender]]'', he physically jumped away from the computer when faced with the Slender Man, much to Michael's chagrin. Fans (and the others) still love him, though.
** This comes to a head in ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1bDzgQyMYU VR the Champions: Emily Wants to Play]]'', when he spends the whole time ''crawling on the floor and hiding in a corner.'' It's hilarious and endearing, especially since we just got to see the usually unshakable Michael and Ryan brought to equal levels of fear and the audience knows that they're not so much laughing at him as relating.
** DirtyCoward: In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 35, he has more than enough to fend for himself (see his ricocheting of Ghast fireballs or his killings of Jack), but he's too scared half the time, so [[OneManArmy Michael]] has to do the heavy lifting.
* TheLoad: Gavin becomes this in "Let's Play Black Ops 2 Zombies Part 2". Gavin keeps using the dual pistols, despite the fact that they are really weak in the later rounds. He keeps dying, forcing Ray to run over to revive him, and then promptly dies again. He ends up doing so poorly that when Ray goes OneManArmy, Ray starts getting more kills in three minutes then Gavin did the entire game.
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 36, Gavin is unable to locate the Potion Stand in the crafting menu, much to his horror and Michael's annoyance. The delay allows Ray to murder Gavin and cause his Blaze Rod (the critical component to the Potion Stand) to go missing, giving [[spoiler:Ryan]] enough time to beat the Gavin/Michael alliance to the goal line.
** His stupidity ''really'' fucks over the Lads in "Cops 'n Crooks Part 3", to the point where Ray laments that "I'd rather have a brain tumor than have Gavin on my team!" and Michael exasperatedly yells "Gavin is the best member ''of the OTHER team!''". To wit:
*** He crashed the police car into a highway sign support, flipping the car and allowing the Gents to get away, because the Lads weren't able to catch up.
*** He fell out of the getaway boat ''twice'', culminating in Geoff killing him after he tried to hijack Geoff's boat.
*** He accidentally drove the second getaway boat onto land, granting the Gents the victory as the getaway vehicle is no longer drivable when the Lads practically had that round in the bag at that point.
*** However, the greatest screw-up by far was when he drove the car over a ramp and got his team trapped in a ledge. Geoff, Ryan and Jack picked them apart in ''seconds''. Thus, this particular Let's Play lead him to being "fired" from the Lads, which was brought up again in "''Let's Build'' Dark Achievement City". It apparently lasted until [=RTX=] '13, when Gavin was readmitted during their Let's Play round of GTA IV and has seemingly stuck as of "Bike Bat Part 2".
** For The Gauntlet in Season 2, he falls into this territory as well, as he proves to be the weak link at Halo and forgets the objective a few times.
* MadBomber: Downplayed, though he does love his TNT almost as much as he does his lava and flint in ''Minecraft''. Best showcased during the third episode, when he went around setting even more dynamite off after [[StuffBlowingUp Plan G]] got enacted because he felt like Achievement City didn't get leveled enough.
-->'''Michael:''' Jack's house just blew up and Gavin's just cackling, so I can only imagine what happened there...
* MessyHair: Will sometimes have long-ish spiky hair, on the occasions when it isn't flattened or shaved, as seen [[http://www.tubefilter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/gavin-free-slow-mo-guys-600x369.jpg here]].
* MissionControl: Had to guide the crew to his location in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 25.
** MissionControlIsOffItsMeds: The route he has them take deliberately involves an enormous drop, causing Jack to fall to his death.
* MoralMyopia: In episode 37 of ''LetsPlay Minecraft'', Gavin complains when Ray knocks him off. Even though Gavin himself knocked Ray off the blocks before. [[LampshadeHanging Ray naturally points this out]].
* MrFanservice: He has two groups dedicated to this, much to his surprise.
* NeverLiveItDown: Invoked by the fandom regarding "headlight fluid", to the point he prefers to not discuss it when he's working on ''The Slow Mo Guys''. On RT Podcast #500, he declared that "headlight fluid" is non-canon, meaning he never wants to hear it again.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: [[spoiler:Geoff comes after him in real life after he steals his stuff and kills him one time too many.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: There's some evidence that he plays up the dumb aspect for laughs, but the AH members would disagree as to how much this is the case (though they do defend him against genuine and insulting questions to his intelligence). It's up to the viewers to interpret whether his CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass moments are his true competence shining through or just momentary lucky breaks.
* OfficialCouple: With Meg Turney, former WebVideo/SourceFed host and former presenter for Creator/RoosterTeeth's news channel, The Know.
* OhCrap: Gavin is dumbfounded to find out that, after everyone finished playing the London Olympics 2012 game, Ray went back and got all of the achievements. Reason for the Oh Crap? Because Gavin chose London Olympics 2012 as the game to play in ''VS'' episode 13.
** He gets another one when Lindsay ends up challenging him instead of Ryan in ''VS'' episode 49, then gets a tad bit worse when she reveals the game "Catlateral Damage." [[spoiler:It wears off quickly when he realizes what the game is actually about.]]
* PerfectlyCromulentWord: ''Constantly'' with naming his ''{{VideoGame/Worms}}''.
** Has a penchant for creating "cromulent words" in general.
* PermaStubble: Whenever he's not in the middle of trying to grow a badass beard, this happens.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He's killed everyone multiple times, himself included.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Barbara. They've known each other since they were 15 and communicating on the old ''Red vs. Blue'' forums and have strongly reiterated that they've never dated and will never date each other, despite people's assumptions.
* PottyFailure: Discussed at the beginning of Let's Play Titanfall Part 5.
-->'''Michael:''' What's up with Gavin's asshole?\\
'''Geoff:''' Gavin. I gotta ask you a question. You ready, buddy?\\
'''Michael:''' I've been waiting all day.\\
'''Gavin:''' Yeah.\\
'''Geoff:''' What did you bring with you to work that you've probably never brought to work with you?\\
'''Gavin:''' Another pair of underwear. ''[someone chuckles]''\\
'''Geoff:''' And why'd you do that?\\
'''Gavin:''' ...because yesterday I shit myself six times. ''[everyone laughs]''
* PrecisionFStrike: Gavin is well known in Achievement Hunter for never ever saying the word "fuck" whereas everyone else says it at least several times a video. However if you go back to very early Rooster Teeth videos, before he had adopted this policy, he can be heard saying "fuck" frequently. It's jarring every time. There are also occasional moments in recent videos when he drops an F-Bomb that can't be edited out, for example at the end of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbaw_6oRFW4&feature=player_detailpage#t=2141 Legends of the Hidden Tower - Part 3.]]
* PrettyBoy: Even with the nose.
* PromotedFanboy: Was a big fan of Rooster Teeth's productions (namely ''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue'') before beginning work at Creator/AchievementHunter. Now he's the Creative Director.
* PyroManiac:
** In ''Minecraft'', his signature tools nowadays are pretty much a bucket of lava and flint and steel. As mentioned at the start of Episode 71 of the Let's Play:
--->'''Michael:''' What the fuck's on fire?\\
'''Lindsay:''' Whoa, what ''is'' on fire?\\
'''Geoff:''' Gavin's in the game, ''something's'' probably on fire...
** Best shown when he blasts people with the flamethrower in the Zombie Apocalypse edition.
* RageQuit: In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 14, Ray got the Tower of Pimps, so Gavin pushed the "[[StuffBlowingUp Plan G]]" button. [[spoiler:Didn't work]].
** In episode 40, Gavin sets the ground under Jack on fire after Jack wins the Tower of Pimps. He mined the gold blocks so they could fall onto the fire. Jack kills him shortly thereafter.
** In the ''Rage Quit'' episode featuring the Steam version of ''VideoGame/SurgeonSimulator2013'', Gavin rage quits on Michael after they start arguing over if they should remove the old kidneys or not.
** An episode of ''Trials Evolution PIG'', Gavin gets so frustrated during one map, he gives up and goes play ''Minecraft'' for a good five minutes until Jack finishes the map.
** More like a Fear Quit in this case, but upon getting jump scared by the Kiki doll in VR the Champions: Emily Wants to Play, he rips the headset off and storms out of the office.
* RecklessGunUsage: Not an infrequent team killer in FPS games, notably ''VideoGame/RainbowSix Vegas''. [[spoiler:And, non-gaming, in the third season premiere of ''WebVideo/{{Immersion}}'', where after an NPC bartender hands him an assault rifle he accidentally shoots the bartender with it.]]
* RecognitionFailure: Gavin was actually ''permabanned from Rooster Teeth's Platform/{{Twitch}} channel'' by one of their own because they thought it was a troll.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Michael's Red.
** Also, in ''Let's Build'', the Blue to Geoff's Red when they aren't acting roughly the same.
* RedBaron: Gav Slitty.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When Burnie kicked him into a metal urinal so that he hit it dick first, Gavin tried this by tackling him and giving him a noogie later. [[DidntThinkThisThrough He was drunk at the time and was promptly kicked into an elevator, though mercifully he got back up to his room without any help.]]
* RuleOfFunny: He's explained that he screws around in games (especially ''Minecraft'') and gets under people's skins - particularly Michael's and Jack's - because it livens things up. Some people who didn't get the memo think he's actually that much of a jerk in real life.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Has a Creeper scarf which he dons in the winter, which Kathleen gave to him.
* ScrewThisImOutOfHere: In the second part of the ''TabletopGame/{{Monopoly}}'' Let's Play, the game has been dragging on for a while now, and everyone is eager for it to end. When Gavin finally gets into a position where he can declare bankruptcy, he presses the button and immediately jumps up and bolts out the door.
** In the third part of the ''VideoGame/IAmBread'' Let's Play, he and Michael survey the bathroom before ending the video. They're doing this on a cupboard door with a ''full sink'' below them. [[WeaksauceWeakness You can probably guess where this is going]]. Gavin screams before vanishing entirely.
--->'''Michael:''' Really? You had to leave? ...Gavin! ...look at it! ''[cracks up]''
* SelfDeprecation: This is probably to stop other people getting in and highlighting his mistakes.
* SeparatedByACommonLanguage: Everyone else is regularly confounded by Gavin's slang, which can be described as a mixture of legitimate British English vernacular and "words that Gavin made up". There was even a mini-show where Gavin quizzed people to find the phrase he'd made up out of a list of real ones.
-->'''Michael:''' You're the ONLY one here that doesn't speak English! It's ''just'' you! You don't even speak a real language, you speak Gavin, it sucks!
** Because of his fondness for slang, Trevor and Jeremy [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUNR_FTiC_E made a game]] where he challenged them to pick out which British slang terms were real and which ones he made up.
* ShareTheMalePain: During the ''Whistleblower'' DLC of ''{{VideoGame/Outlast}}'', Gavin finds himself horrified and sympathetic towards the victims of the deranged [[MisterSeahorse Eddie Gluskin]] – and is visibly ''disgusted'' by the [[GroinAttack methods]] by which Gluskin operates.
* ShipTease: He often invokes this with several of the other staff members, mostly Michael, Ray, and Barbara. Despite that, he's happily dating Meg, while both the lads having their own partners (and, you know, are also straight), and both him and Barbara have made it clear they won't ever hook up. Doesn't stop it making it into the MusicVideo for Music/BarenakedLadies' "Did I Say It Out Loud?" though.
* ShrineToSelf: He has a secret room commemorating the (at the time) ''single'' occasion he won the Tower of Pimps called "Gav's Trophie ''[sic]'' Room of Victory". The guys find out (with the unsubtle aid of Geoff, who knew about it) in episode 47, much to their amusement and his distress.
-->'''Gavin:''' It's ''private''!\\
'''Michael:''' Gavin is... I think he's about to ''cry''.\\
'''Ray:''' This is the saddest thing I've seen.\\
'''Jack:''' Wow, do you have a note from your ''mom'' in here too?\\
'''Gavin:''' [[WhatTheHellHero I hate you guys. You guys are rubbish!]]
* SitcomArchNemesis:
** To Jack, who almost never passes up an opportunity to kill Gavin in Let's Plays.
** Even more so to Lannan "Lazarbeam" Eacott whenever he visits.
* SoreLoser: When he was sacked in "LetsPlay Madden Super Bowl Special", his character (Joe Flacco) shoved the guy who tackled him to the ground.
* TheSmartGuy: In ''Minecraft''; he has more experience with the game, so he designs most of their courses and cities. He's also the only one who knows how to build several Redstone mechanisms like TNT Cannons, a further testament to his game knowledge.
** He's also very good at cinematography, and is one of only a handful of people in the world who are trained to use the high-speed cameras he uses for ''The Slow Mo Guys''.
** MrExposition: In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 30, he explains the mechanics behind a wolf's health (a big tail means full health; if he eats meat, the tail grows).
* SpannerInTheWorks: At the very end of "Let's Play Worms Part 2", Gavin, Ray and Michael all had one worm left. When it was Gavin's turn, he used a jetpack to release dynamite on Ray. However, he spent too much time trying to "tease it", the fuel for his jetpack ran out. When he tried to fly up, the jetpack disappeared, propelling him into the water, killing himself. Just two seconds later, the dynamite threw Ray's worm into the water, effectively winning the game for Michael.
** In general Gavin is rather prone to screwing people's chances of winning, both intentionally and unintentionally (making it this trope).
* SmugSnake: Actually scoring a few points (whether legitimately or through his usual method of trolling) will sometimes get him overconfident, the best examples being the ''Franchise/{{Halo}}'' Let's Plays.
* TeamKiller: ''Especially'' in their Let's Plays of Worms and Rainbow Six where he's far more of a danger to his own team than to the others' (though in Rainbow Six, the others are almost as bad as him at times).
* TemptingFate: "Good luck finding the bloody Nether Fortress." ''Right as Jack and Geoff spawned in a Nether Fortress.'' Gavin was flabbergasted.
** ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 38, he expressed his distaste at the idea of Ray winning the Tower of Pimps for a second week in a row. Guess what happens.
** During "Let's Play Trials Evolution", he says "Look how good we all are." Immediately after saying that, Geoff crashes.
** During one playthrough of ''Cloudberry Kingdom'', as the group spawns at the start of a new level, Gavin excitedly proclaims "We're back, [[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch bitches!]]" This is immediately followed by him walking straight off a ledge.
* TheThingThatWouldNotLeave: As Michael tells it, how he joined Achievement Hunter. When Gavin started at Rooster Teeth, he didn't approve of the desk he was given, so he went and found another free desk. In the Achievement Hunter office.
* ThoseTwoGuys:
** With Michael. This applies less and less as time goes on as it becomes apparent that Gavin and Michael have become core members of the cast and just as well-known as the others, but their bond is the same.
** Gradually turned into this with Fiona Nova, particularly during the Achievement Hunter ''Trouble in Terrorist Town'' series. On the "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV0BpGubgMs People Like Grapes in Bed]]" episode of ''Always Open'', Barabara remarked on how surprising it was to see their chemistry grow.
--->'''Barbara''': I am fascinated because - I don't know why, don't take this as an insult - I did not expect you guys to have the chemistry you have in videos.
--->'''Fiona''': I think it's cause we're both European. We came in and had this thing that happened.
--->'''Barbara''': You need to fight.
--->'''Fiona''': "I'll either fight you or we'll become best friends!" And it's both!
--->'''Gavin''': It's both all the times. Some times at the same time.
--->'''Barbara''': Like a hate-hate relationship?
--->'''Fiona''': "God, I hate you, but...you're the best person ever!"
* [[TokenEvilTeammate Token Chaotic Teammate]]: He [[{{Troll}} personally ignites]] ''a lot'' of problems for the crew in ''Minecraft''. Whether it's burning down their house, setting their library on fire, trying to lead the guys to their deaths (successfully with Jack), losing the Tower of Pimps underground (though that was an accident to an extent), killing members of the crew when they're distracted, stealing their tools and weapons, sealing Geoff in a mine and so forth.
* TookALevelInBadass: In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 23, we get to see the full extent of Gavin's expertise as a ''Minecraft'' player. Case in point, he ''wins the Tower of Pimps!''
** Even more so in "''Halo 4'' Crimson Map Pack Episode 2". To start off, Gavin's first kill is ''Ray'', and he keeps on rolling with it. He was once inside a Mantis, attacked by Ryan, Michael and Jacks, all of whom were in Ghosts, and he killed ''all three'' before Ray took him down.
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 105, he lost to Ryan in two [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomping]] one-on-one sword fights. Later on, both of them complete their Tower of Pimps in the same round, so they had one more fight to determine the overall winner. Surprisingly, after getting his health refilled and his Lads back him for support, Gavin defeats Ryan in a much closer match than before and wins the Tower.
** Gavin's playing in ''Minecraft'' in general improved greatly in 2014. Previously he had only won the Tower of Pimps a grand total of ''two'' times (one each in 2012 and 2013). By contrast, 2014 saw him take no less than ''four'' times (winning "Mad King Ryan", "Enter the Negatower", "Title Update" and [[spoiler:"Fishing Rodeo and Jamboree III"]]). This finally tied him with Geoff in Tower wins.
* TrashTalk: Often does this in ''VS'' episodes when he gains a lead, even if he's losing badly overall. PlayedForLaughs as usual.
-->'''Gavin:''' ''[teabagging Ray]'' Suck my British testicles!
* TrashTheSet: Gavin's desks at the Rooster Teeth office get broken a lot. Most infamously the time Jeremy axe kicked one with all of his stuff still on it.
* {{Troll}}: While mostly PlayedForLaughs, Gavin couldn't seem to go into a game without ruining it for everyone else early on. According to him, it was to create excitement in otherwise boring videos, as such it has been toned down somewhat in later videos since Achievement Hunter found its feet and consistently makes entertaining videos without resorting to self-sabotage.
** Destroying Jack and Geoff's beds in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 35, effectively booting them from the game once they died. Note that neither Jack nor Geoff were in any position to challenge Gavin at that point.
** Creating land mines by hiding TNT under pressure plates in ''Minecraft''. In general a decent number of the "Things To Do in Minecraft" videos that he makes without Geoff (or some even with him) teach people creative ways to wreck someone else's day.
** Dumping lava all over the guys' first house in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 1.
** Shooting Ray twice with fire arrows in "Rain of Fire."
** Tried to get a Creeper to explode after hitting it in the back, so it screws up Michael and Jack. Didn't work, though.
** Trying to lead the crew to their deaths in episode 25. Successfully, in Jack's case.
** Using a fence to seal Ray in his house during ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 27.
** Setting the guys' library on fire. Twice.
** Terrorizing the Villagers in episode 30. He threw one off a roof after saying "Don't fall off the roof!"; hit another onto a farm; pushed one into a well and sealed the entrance; attacked one for not getting into his home yet; punched one to death at the beginning of the video; smacked another with a pickaxe and his hands; and killed the last one after congratulating him for the hospitality.
*** According to the rest of the cast, Gavin's been like this for as long as they've known him. One of his most notorious traits before Achievement Hunter started was killing off any friendly [=NPCs=] in other games so that he could get all of the experience from kills.
** Swimming underwater, mining the wood from Caleb's pier and pulling him into the water. This was ''before'' he learned that Caleb was cheating. After he does find out, he sets him alight and beats him to death with an iron sword, though it's quite probable somebody else would have done it if he hadn't.
** He gets Geoff to go underneath a large mass of sand blocks. Gavin grabs a shovel and removes one, leading to all sand blocks falling to the water. Geoff is none too pleased.
** All the times he uses portals to throw the guys off-guard in ''Mari0''.
** Extends into real life too, as he often interrupts other people working (he interrupts the Weekly Update part of Achievement Hunter the most frequently) and gets trolled in turn. It was once lampshaded by Geoff after some trolling of his own.
--->'''Geoff:''' "Now I see why Gavin does it; it's hilarious."
** His official skin in ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}'' is actually a Creeper, to reflect this. It often prompts the others, namely Jack and especially Michael, to mistake Gavin as a ''real'' Creeper.
*** [[OhCrap And occasionally, vice-versa.]]
*** He's even mistaken a creeper for ''himself''. '''While playing'''. (In his defense, he edited the ''Minecraft'' Let's Plays at the time)
---->'''Gavin:''' The weird thing is, for a moment I thought, 'Oh there's me'.
** A rather blatant example is when Ray is about to mine the Tower in episode 37... and then, in real life, Gavin runs over to Ray's desk and messes with his controller causing him to fall to his death.
* TurnsRed: His character in "Let's Play WWE '13", after the first round. Not that it helped him.
* UglyGuyHotWife: Joked in several AH videos; though he's far from unattractive, Gavin's real life girlfriend is Meg Turney, [[MsFanservice who is a professional model (usually for underwear)]], so the AH guys like to tease him about how she's out of his league and/or exaggerate Gavin's supposed ugliness.
* UnfortunateNames: The name of the UK archer in the 2012 London Olympics game is Mark Nutt. Noteworthy because Gavin has a tendency to invoke the guy's name every time he makes an impressive shot (of which he makes several) since he bested everyone at archery in the original video.
-->'''Gavin:''' Suck on my [[{{Pun}} Nutt]]!
* UpperClassTwit: Everyone else accuses him of being one, but it's really just PlayedForLaughs.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: He enjoys running on this in games like ''Skyrim''. See [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-JEbHxMSzQ "Pissing Off The Preacher"]] (though admittedly this probably only increased his popularity).
** In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 30, Gavin not only brings up the suggestion to burn the villagers alive, but he actually drowns a villager, nicknamed Bronson by him almost immediately after he drowns, in a well by covering it up with wood. The other guys [[EveryoneHasStandards aren't impressed]].
--->'''Jack:''' Can we try to fence in all the villagers? Can we push them all together and lock them in?\\
'''Gavin:''' Maybe we should burn them alive."
** His tendency to murder AI Marines in ''Halo'' has led to Gus and Burnie dubbing him a psychopath.
** He kills random turtles in ''World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria''. Hates it every time, but does it every time... [[InsaneTrollLogic because he hates it every time]]. For various reasons, the guys grew sick of it.
--->'''Ryan:''' Stop murdering turtles!\\
'''Gavin:''' I can't!\\
'''Ryan:''' ''Why?!''\\
'''Gavin:''' [[InsaneTrollLogic Because it's really sad!]]\\
'''Geoff:''' Gavin, can you just-\\
'''Michael:''' What are you ''fucking whining'' about?\\
'''Jack:''' Jesus Christ! Gavin, get the hell over here!\\
'''Ryan:''' What do you have against woodland creatures?
* VitriolicBestBuds: With pretty much ''everyone'' in the office, but most notably Michael.
** Also with Geoff. For all the crap that the two put each other through, Geoff has likened their relationship to having a younger brother or an older kid.
** Not to mention, Ray. In ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episodes 26, 27, and 28, both of them kept messing with the others stuff (Gavin's Tower of Pimps and Ray's roses), and they both cause a lot of unnecessary grief for the other such as Gavin setting the library on fire and Ray stealing Gavin's fish. However, then they do things like jumping around together and [[ItMakesSenseinContext trying to catch a pig with fishing rods.]]
--->'''Ray:''' ''[after annoying Gavin by taking his tower and putting it back wrong]'' I'm sorry, Gavin. Best friends forever?\\
'''Gavin:''' [=BFFs=], Ray.
** Comes to a head in ''Let's Play Minecraft'' episode 37, where Gavin takes turns punching or pushing Ray and Michael off the blocks in the sky, who respond in kind.
** Also with Jack. You may be forgiven that for the amount of times they screw one another over that they legitimately have it in for one another, but Jack has clarified that he and Gavin are indeed friends in real life. Adding on to this, a certain podcast had Burnie ask if Jack and Gavin hated one another, a sentiment that they both shot down in a hurry.
** With Fiona as well. When interacting with each other in a video game, they will often bicker, but at the same time, they'll freak out or grow concerned if the other is injured or dies.
* WalkingDisasterArea: Both in real life and video games, anywhere he goes is bound to get trashed. He's notorious in the AH office for wondering how to break various objects in entertaining ways, then getting others to do it.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Wet bread. Even seeing pictures of it makes him literally throw up.
* WelcomeBackTraitor: After being tossed out in "Cops 'n Crooks Part 3" for his trolling, Gavin is officially reinstated into Team Lads in "Lava Wall".
* WeUsedToBeFriends: He used to be friends with Sam Pepper but has publicly cut ties with him after his infamous "Fake Ass Hand Pinch Prank".
** Happened again after Ryan Haywood's scandal in October 2020, resulting in their departure from Achievement Hunter. Gavin and the other AH crew were openly very hurt by his betrayal.
* WildCard: Due to what he is, it's pretty hard to predict if he'll screw some over with during a LetsPlay. Michael actually refers to him as one verbatim in ''Let's Play Grand Theft Auto IV'' "Cops 'n Crooks Part 3". In general, his performance in team-based games (whether all six are co-op playing or if it's Lads versus Gents) varies from video to video between [[TheHero carrying the team]], [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass doing badly then turning it all around]], [[TheLoad being dead weight to his team]], and just plain [[{{Troll}} undermining their efforts to win]].
** Gavin has said in interviews and podcasts that he feels his unofficial job during Let's Plays is to stir things up if things are going too smoothly (as it makes for a more entertaining video).
* {{Workaholic}}: Most likely is one considering how much he does for Rooster Teeth, dividing his time between Achievement Hunter, ''The Rooster Teeth Podcast'', ''The Slow Mo Guys'', etc. It was mentioned during RTX 2014 that he had such a loaded schedule for the expo that it gave him virtually no [[StealthPun free]] time. He's lamented that starting in late 2015, he's flying so much between Austin, LA, and England that virtually all his time is spent in Rooster Teeth productions, SMG filming, other appearances, flying, or sleeping.
* XMustNotWin:
** Despite a lot of Let's Plays ending with him far in last place due to trolling and ineptitude, if there's a measure of Gavin coming close to victory, the others will drop what they're doing to make sure he doesn't win. This toned down later on.
--->'''Jack:''' Gavin ''not'' winning is almost better than winning.
** It's especially noticeable in the ''Worms'' Let's Plays. The others often ignore greater threats (Ray and Michael, who've won more games than Gavin and Geoff) to beat the shit out of Gavin's worms.
