A UsefulNotes/{{Rochester}}[=-=]based company known primarily for their cameras and the development of formats such as 35mm film, the [[https://kodak.com Eastman Kodak Company]] was established in 1889 by George Eastman.[[note]]Not to be confused with [[Creator/GeorgeEastman the Italian actor/screenwriter]], who took his {{stage name|s}} from the company's founder.[[/note]] For most of the twentieth century, Kodak was ''the'' dominant name in consumer photography -- to the extent that the phrase "kodak moment" [[BrandNameTakeover entered the public lexicon]] to describe moments that deserve to be photographed for posterity. Besides doing for amateur photography what Henry Ford did for the automobile, and coming out with the first successful color film (the legendary Kodachrome), the company also provided film for hundreds of projects worldwide, including ''Film/LakePlacid'', ''Series/TrueBlood'', ''Series/{{CSI}}'', ''Film/TheATeam'' and ''Film/AVPAlienVsPredator'', until their bankruptcy in 2012 at the hands of [[TechnologyMarchesOn digital photography and its use in smartphones]].

In 1994, the company established Creator/{{Cinesite}}, a European (and for over a decade, American) visual effects firm best known for films such as ''Film/{{GoldenEye}}'', ''Film/SpaceJam'', the ''Film/HarryPotter'' series and ''Film/JohnCarter''. Kodak's bankruptcy caused it to be sold to investors in 2012.
