Originally launched in 1992 as a four-hour weekend programming block on Creator/CartoonNetwork The channel itself launched on April 1st, 2000; the programming block on Cartoon Network would actually last until December 26th, 2004., Boomerang serves as a channel to showcase Turner's extensive animation archives, including pre-1986 MGM (WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry), Creator/HannaBarbera (WesternAnimation/TheSmurfs, Franchise/ScoobyDoo, WesternAnimation/TheSnorks, WesternAnimation/TheFlintstones, the list could go on and on), and older Creator/WarnerBros Animaion material (WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes, at least until Creator/CartoonNetwork started showing it again). Of note is that, like its corporate sibling Creator/TurnerClassicMovies, Boomerang doesn't run any outside advertising, only stuff for its sister network and music videos featuring Boomerang's classic programming.

Lately, Boomerang has been adding more relatively recent material to its schedule, mostly from Cartoon Network's old CartoonCartoons library of shows, and the odd episode or two of Anime/Pokemon. While some have cried foul, it is sort of fair to remember that some of these shows are nearly 20 years old, and a good majority of the CartoonCartoons are at least a decade old at the time of this edit. Whether this trend will continue remains to be seen, though it's probably inevitable given that they can only rerun their older stuff so many times before it gets sort of stale.

Starting in 2014, Boomerang became an ad-supported network that ran outside advertising, as well as finally being acknowledged by Turner in its channel lineup. All this will culminate in a rebranding in late-2014 where the network will become a family animation channel aimed at parents, children and girls as opposed to its boy-slanted parent channel.
