!!This series includes examples of:

* BigFriendlyDog: Woofy ''wuvs'' * insert thing here* !, normally following an instance of him frenziedly licking whatever he's talking about.
* ButterflyOfTransformation: Sequences about catepillars transforming to butterflies inspire talk about change.
* CatapultNightmare: In the [[http://muttscomics.com/strip.aspx?m=05&d=19&y=13 strip for May 19th, 2013]] Mooch wakes up from a multilevel dream (having a dream about having a dream, which is about having a dream, etc.) in shock. He says to his owner "Now I've dreamed everything!"
* CloudCuckooLander: Mooch
* CrossOver: When {{Blondie}} celebrated the Bumsteads 60th Anniversay in 2005 Earl and Mooch could be seen with other King Features characters on Blodie and Dagwood's front lawn. In the ''Mutts'' comic for that day we see their owner getting an invite to the gala as Earl trips up the oddly familliar looking Mailman.
* CueTheSun: One Sunday strip after the solstice. It in fact faced Mooch as he stuck his head out the door.
* TheFaceOfTheSun: One Sunday strip, after the summer solstice.
* FangThpeak: Mooch.
* FungusHumongous: In the [[http://muttscomics.com/strip.aspx?m=05&d=05&y=13 strip for May 5th, 2013]], Earl and Mooch walk among mushrooms taller than a human being.
* GentleGiant: The Guard Dog.
* GreenAesop
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: Shnelly's ears appear. No more. Despite persistent wooing from Mooch.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Crabby
** Also Frank.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: [[http://www.muttscomics.com/cast.aspx Start here.]]
* LovesMeNot: Mooch does this toward Shnelly -- with a three-leaf clover.
* MeaningfulName: Sourpuss and Crabby. Guess their respective species and disposition.
* NurseryRhyme
* PersonalRaincloud: Sourpuss gets one when complaining of whether the clouds would decide to rain or not.
* PetTheDog: Quite literally.
* PrettyButterflies: At a distance. Mooch is less impressed with the face.
* PuppyDogEyes: Used by the characters in multiple strips.
* ShoutOut: In many Sunday strips, the title panel will sometimes contain [[http://www.muttscomics.com/title.aspx a reference of some sort.]]
** A RunningGag is Sourpuss's [[{{Garfield}} hatred of Mondays]].
* StraightMan: Earl, to Mooch's Wise Guy.
* SugarBowl: Most of the time.
