The '''Avengers Defenders War''' was a 1973 crossover between ComicBook/TheAvengers and ComicBook/TheDefenders.

The Enchantress turned the Black Knight into a stone statue, and the Defenders (Dr. Strange, Hulk, Namor, Silver Surfer, Valkyrie and Hawkeye, who had just left the Avengers) sought to help him. Dr. Strange communicated with the Knight's soul, but Dormammu and Loki (who was blind at the moment) changed his message, so that he appeared to send the Defenders to gather the pieces of a DismantledMacGuffin known as the Evil Eye. Dormammu wanted the Evil Eye in order to merge Earth with his own Dark Dimension. Loki, fearing that Dormammu might do the same to Asgard, warned the Avengers to stop the Defenders. The Avengers at the time were composed of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Mantis and the Swordsman.

After a number of clashes over the pieces of the Eye, Captain America and Namor realized that their groups had been manipulated into fighting each other, but it was late: Dormammu took the united pieces of the Evil Eye, and began to merge Earth into his own dimension. But he was betrayed by Loki and defeated by the Scarlet Witch, ending the war.

* AlternateHistory: After the defeat of Dormammu, the Defenders returned to their original goal of undoing the spell that turned the Black Knight to stone. They were sent to a comic book version of the Crusades.
* AppeaseTheVolcanoGod: The unconscious Scarlet Witch was about to be a human sacrifice for the erupting volcano, when the crazy natives put her on the way of the lava stream.
* ArgentinaIsNaziland: The Valkyrie and the Swordsman fought in a castle of a runaway Nazi.
* ContinuityNod: Namor's reference to his previous "fight" with Captain America. It was actually a single panel, Captain America attacked Namor from the back, and Namor effortlessly tossed him aside without even bothering to check to had attacked him.
* CoversAlwaysLie
** [[http://www.wwcomics.com/images/large/Defd_9_94.jpg Defenders 9]]. Contrary to the cover, Hawkeye ''mentioned'' being a Defender, but no Defender came to his rescue: he fought Iron Man alone.
** [[http://www.wwcomics.com/images/large/Defs_10_94.jpg Defenders 10]]: "The incredible Hulk vs. the mighty Thor -- in a battle to the finish!" Not to the finish: the battle ended when Avengers and Defenders mended their differences.
** [[http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/11/117443/2481733-avengers117_super.jpg Avengers 117]]: A good description of the fight that took place inside the comic... but with the roles of Namor and Captain America reversed.
* CreatorProvincialism: Ejem. There is no jungle in Sucre, Bolivia. Sucre is located in a dry altiplano.
* DidYouJustScamCthulhu: Not a common sight. The Trickster has been tricked, and even forced to the indignity of asking his despised brother Thor for help.
* DismantledMacGuffin: The Evil Eye.
* EnemyMine: Avengers and Defenders against Loki and Dormammu, and then Loki with them against Dormammu (also, when he asked for help).
* ExactWords: Dormammu had once attempted to conquer Earth, but he was defeated by Dr. Strange, who forced him to swear an oath that he would never return to Earth's dimension again. Thus he wanted the Evil Eye... if he moved Earth to his own dimension, he could conquer it without breaking his oath.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Dr. Strange erased the knowledge of the existence of the Defenders from Nick Fury's mind but let the Avengers keep theirs.
** During the fight, Dormammu turned Thor and Iron Man into Don Blake and Tony Stark. Afterwards, Dr. Strange erased from everyone else the memory of their secret identities.
* MacGuffinDeliveryService: Dormammu sends the Defenders (and the Avengers) to find the scattered pieces of the Evil Eye so that he can assemble it and use it himself.
* MacGuffinMelee: The Vision and the Silver Surfer were both running to claim a piece of the Evil Eye. The Vision was closer... but saw the unconscious Scarlet Witch about to be killed by a lava stream and left the fight to save her, allowing the Silver Surfer to take the prize.
* NeverMyFault: Loki helped Dormammu, but once he realized the potential problems with that, he warned the Avengers to stop the Defenders. What did he tell them, exactly? That the Defenders were trying to take over the world -- ''not'' that he had loosed something which had gotten out of hand (in Dormammu) or that he had made a mistake. Never a mistake. Oh no.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: As Captain America and Namor trespassed in Japan to find a piece of the Evil Eye, the Japanese hero Sunfire took it for the government of Japan. Yes, an Obstructive Bureaucrat who can fire sunbolts... but an Obstructive Bureaucrat nonetheless.
* {{Revision}}: The Evil Eye was a MacGuffin item created during Jack Kirby's run on the Fantastic Four, which exploded like an atomic bomb. This story says that it was not actually destroyed but divided into six parts that fell in different parts of the world.
* RippleEffectProofMemory: Prester John somehow knows the time travel thing involving the Diabolic Eye, even when he wasn't a time traveler himself.
* SomethingWeForgot: After the discussion of Namor and Captain America, Avengers and Defenders returned from their varied locations in the world, to clarify what had happened... and they suddenly realized that they forgot about Thor and Hulk.
* StableTimeLoop: Averted. The Human Torch met Prester John, an immortal who owned the Evil Eye. He stole it to open the dome that closed Attilan, but it exploded half the way. It was divided in several pieces, and during this crossover the pieces were located and used to recreate the original thing. And then the Defender were displaced to the past, along with the Evil Eye, and they gave it to Prester John... some years ''before'' he got it in the first place (so he has two now?)
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Loki wanted to save Asgard and protect Odin because he felt only he had the right to overthrow Odin.
* ThrowingOffTheDisability: Loki was blind during this adventure. He joined forces with Dormammu, hoping to be cured from his blindness, [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor and he was... but he didn't like the way it happened]]
* UnreliableNarrator: Loki's description of the Defenders.
