!!Main Protagonists

[[folder:Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway]]
->''Always… always I've done something to fight for myself… for others. No matter what.''

The main protagonist of the series, a 17-year old dhampir who is best friends with Princess Lissa Dragomir. After being brought back from the dead by Lissa, Rose is mentally bonded to her, and can regularly see through Lissa's eyes. Rose is sarcastic, quick-witted and defiant, and throughout the series trains to become Lissa's official guardian, while in the process of falling in love with her mentor, Dimitri Belikov.

Played in the film by Creator/ZoeyDeutch.
----
* ActionGirl: Pretty much a prerequisite as a guardian, but still. Trained to fight against Strigoi and other threats. Skilled at killing.
* AffectionateNickname: "Little Dhampir" as nicknamed by Adrian and "Roza" as nicknamed by Dimitri.
* AllergicToEvil: She has the ability to sense when Strigoi (a.k.a. the undead) are nearby (this is one of the effects of being "shadow-kissed", or having returned from the dead). While this ability proves useful in terms of self-defense, it manifests itself as severe nausea whenever Strigoi are in the area, which is extremely unpleasant and inconvenient, particularly when she's trying to actually fight the super-strong, super-fast, undead vampires.
* AlphaBitch: Hoo boy. Though a good person at heart, she definitely fulfils this role at the Academy. Or at least tries to. Popular girl, center of the social scene, and has an attitude.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Described as naturally tan and black-haired. Her father is Turkish, which explains where she got her looks from.
* ArbitrarySkepticism: When she starts seeing ghosts, she questions her sanity. Because as she puts: "while I believed in vampires and magic and psychic powers, I most certainly did not believe in ghosts".
* BackFromTheDead: She died in a car crash along with Lissa's other family, but Lissa revived her, making them psychically bonded.
* BackToBackBadasses: Often with Dimitri. They co-operate in battle scenes. For example, in ''Spirit Bound'' they immediately go back-to-back to face the royal guard, and do a good job at taking them out.
* BattleCouple: With Dimitri. They often fight alongside each other, facing the enemy jointly.
* BetterAsFriends:
** How she thinks of Mason. In ''Frostbite'', she eventually agrees to date him (in an attempt to get over Dimitri) but she's never truly attracted to him.
** Ultimately, her and Adrian too.
* BettyAndVeronica: Adrian and Dimitri represent Betty and Veronica for Rose in terms of position, although personality-wise their roles are reversed. Adrian is a safer relationship like Betty, while Dimitri presents the forbidden fruit like Veronica. Personality-wise Dimitri is a more down-to-earth character than the glamorous Adrian and his over-the-top gifts to Rose.
* BigEater: Has a big appetite. She eats as much as the dhampir guys. Justified because she needs a lot of energy to fight.
* BrutalHonesty: She isn't shy to speak her mind, regardless of how inappropriate the situation.
* BuffySpeak: Regularly employs this. She names "Rose-logic" her method of finding "loopholes in everything in order to rationalize doing something unreasonable".
* CantCatchUp: In ''Vampire Academy'', having missed two years of training, Rose can't catch up to the rest of her classmates. That is why she needs extra training from Dimitri. Averted by ''Frostbite'' when she mostly catches up. She ends up graduating at the top of her class.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Her protective instincts tend to overwhelm her reason. For example in ''Blood Promise'' she goes to check up on a random homeless woman and in the process separates herself from her group, going against her own rules not to break ranks for safety reasons. That is how Dimitri the Strigoi ambushes her.
* ClearMyName: In ''Last Sacrifice'', [[spoiler: she is framed for the murder of Queen Tatiana and spends the brunt of the book as a fugitive on the run]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: For Lissa (though as a friend) when she forms close relationships with others (such as Christian and Avery). She tries to get Christian to back off from Lissa and feels hurt that Avery is replacing her as Lissa's companion.
* CoolPeopleRebelAgainstAuthority: Opposes authority figures on principle, butting heads with the headmistress of the Academy and a few teachers. She gets some admirers this way.
* DeadpanSnarker: Rose is known to have a very dry wit and sense of humor. Her mouth has a habit of getting her in trouble sometimes.
* DetectEvil: Probably her most useful power is the nausea she develops whenever a [[AlwaysChaoticEvil Strigoi]] is near.
* {{Dhampyr}}: Rose is a [[InsistentTerminology dhampir]], which is someone who is [[HalfHumanHybrid half human, half vampire]]. Rose's mother is a dhampir and her father is a Moroi (full-blooded vampire).
* DisabilitySuperPower: Inverted: she has the ability to see through Lissa's eyes, but doing so makes her blind to what is going on around her.
* DoNotCallMePaul: A minor example. She does not like being called "Rosemarie". She does not object however when her teacher Sonya Karp calls her by her first name.
* DudeMagnet: She definitely attracts men in spades, for reasons good or bad. Including Jesse Zeklos, Mason Ashford, Dimitri Belikov, Adrian Ivashkov, Rolan Kislyak, Joshua Dawes, and a couple of minor admirers.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: She finally gets her happy ending after [[spoiler: one of her closest friends dying, nearly going insane, the love of her life being turned Strigoi and who gets eventually turned back after she nearly kills him twice, being tortured both through the bond with her best friend and actually tortured in person, getting accused of assassinating a monarch and nearly executed before she finds out that one of the people she trusts, likes and admires was the real killer and set her up to take the fall]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The introduction of the readers to Rose is her waking up, feeling Lissa's nightmare, and going to comfort her. Establishing their PsychicLink immediately, and Rose as a sort of caretaker to Lissa.
* FieryRedhead: Rose is a brunette with some tinges of red in her hair, and is described to be extremely strong-willed, stubborn, passionate, feisty, fiery, proud and impulsive.
* TheFinalTemptation: In ''Blood Promise'', [[spoiler: Strigoi!Dimitri offers to turn her Strigoi so they can be together. She comes very close to accepting]].
* FirstPersonPerspective: The books are told entirely through her perspective.
* {{Frameup}}: [[spoiler: In ''Last Sacrifice'', she is framed for the murder of Queen Tatiana Ivashkov]].
* GoingColdTurkey: Her way of dealing with her dependency of the endorphins released by being bitten and drank from.
* GoodBadGirl: She has some seriously shady sexual reputation in the academy and the Moroi/Dhampir community as a whole, due to getting semi-nude with several guys. She has some distinct EthicalSlut tendencies, especially in the first two novels. She likes to go after men and get involved in sexual situations, without actually going all the way. Despite this she has her set of morals.
* HairTriggerTemper: Trait amplified by spirit effects. But even as a 5-year-old, she called her kindergarten teacher a fascist bastard and threw a book at her for making her and Lissa spell out their very long and complicated full given names.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Formerly, though she's not completely over this phase. As she describes herself: "I wanted to go to all the royal parties and wild drunken festivities like we'd done before."
* HeroicBastard: The illegitimate daughter of Janine Hathaway and [[spoiler: Ibrahim "Abe" Mazur]]. Her parents never married, making her an actual bastard. She is genuinely heroic.
* TheHeroine: To Lissa's TheLancer.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: After Mason's death in ''Frostbite'', she becomes a bit unhinged for a while]].
* IndyPloy: Her usual tactic for getting out of situations. She is fast-thinking but acts without a long-term plan. Like, for example, forming an immediate escape plan in Portland, once her and Lissa's cover is blown, one involving borrowing a car and running off to Los Angeles to get lost in the crowd. It works most of the time, but she also has remarkable luck.
* ISeeDeadPeople: A side-effect of being shadow-kissed is that she can see ghosts and has to concentrate to shut them out completely. She first gets this ability in ''Shadow Kiss'', and it complicates her field experience-- not to mention her life-- ''a lot''. It also becomes extremely useful later on in the series.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Definitely not the most outwardly kind person, though in ''Blood Promise'' Sydney comments on how Rose seems so friendly and sociable towards her. She has no trouble insulting people, being [[BrutalHonesty Brutally Honest]] with Lissa, and exposing weaknesses in other people (like revealing the dirt-poor background of Mia Rialdi). Yet she also goes our of her way to protect the people she cares about.
* LightFeminineDarkFeminine: The dark feminine to Lissa's light feminine. Rose is the seductive, temperamental, and violent of the duo while Lissa is the more light-hearted, even-tempered, and angelic-looking of the two.
* LukeIAmYourFather: In ''Blood Promise'' it is revealed that Rose's father is [[spoiler: Abe Mazur]]. Funny thing is, she doesn't find out till after she's back on the other side of the world. And then her reaction is just priceless:
-->[[spoiler: "Oh God," I said, "I’m Zmey’s daughter. Zmey Junior. Zmeyette, even."]]
* MiscarriageOfJustice: In ''Last Sacrifice'', she is [[spoiler: convicted of regicide and sentenced to death, based only on circumstantial evidence]]. She is innocent.
* MysteriousParent: She grew up with no knowledge of her father's identity, other that he was a Turkish Moroi. [[spoiler: He turns out to be Ibrahim "Abe" Mazur, a notorious smuggler and trader in information. He later plays an active part in her life]].
* {{Necromancer}}: A partial aspect of her shadow-kissed powers. She can summon ghosts, though it takes a lot of effort and gives her a splitting headache.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: With Dimitri Belikov]].
* ParentalAbandonment: It's common for Dhampir's to have a DisappearedDad, but her mother dumped her at St. Vladimir's when she was two years old in order to continue her guardian duties. Eventually averted, as [[spoiler: both her mother and father begin to take a decent part in her life by ''Last Sacrifice''. Her father more than her mother]].
* PsychicLink: She and Lissa have a one-sided mental bond through which she can see through Lissa's eyes at will. This comes from the fact that Lissa used her rare ability to control the element Spirit to unknowingly bring Rose back to life after a car accident. Lissa's power is also PowerAtAPrice and can make her very depressed or downright insane with overuse, and Rose can take the effects away from Lissa and suffer them herself.
* RaceLift: Played by the decidedly white Zoey Deutch in TheFilmOfTheBook.
* ReallyGetsAround: She has this reputation, due to getting semi-nude and making out with hot guys. But she is actually highly selective over who she's intimate with - unlike Lissa. Part of her GoodBadGirl ways.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Lissa's blue. She is passionate, defiant, often violent and impulsive. In contrast to the more obedient, reserved, and intellectual Lissa.
* SeeingThroughAnothersEyes: What she can do through Lissa as a result of their PsychicLink. She can see and experience everything Lissa experiences.
* SenseLossSadness: The psychic bond is severed in ''Last Sacrifice''. Rose feels strange with being unable to sense Lissa any more. It means losing an extra sense that she's had for years.
* SlutShaming: She suffers from this in the first book when both Jesse Zeklos and Ralf Sarcozy claim to have had sex with her and were allowed to drink her blood.
* SpiderSense: Because she is "shadow-kissed" (brought back from the dead by a spirit-using Moroi vampire), she has the ability to sense when Strigoi (murderous, soulless undead vampires) are nearby. [[BlessedWithSuck Unfortunately for her]], this sense manifests itself as severe nausea whenever Strigoi are in the area, which is not helpful when you are trying to fight super-strong, super-fast creatures who want nothing more than to kill you.
* StakingTheLovedOne: [[spoiler: Rose has to do this to Dimitri in ''Blood Promise''.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: Rose's relationship with Dimitri, due to their age difference and student-teacher relationship. [[spoiler: Eventually subverted, as at the end of the series their relationship is accepted]].
* StreetSmart: She doesn't have the highest academic grades, but boy is she good at survival. She copes well with most new situations that come her way and figures things out easily.
* TarotTroubles: She sits through two tarot readings. Her cards tend to appear ominously reversed.
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: She has one of these in ''Last Sacrifice'', for killing [[spoiler: Victor]].
* UnwantedHarem: By ''Last Sacrifice'', she has more guys casually, or not so casually, interested in her than the rest of the characters combined.
* VigilanteWoman: In ''Blood Promise'' she goes on her own unsanctioned Strigoi-hunting mission, breaking a lot of guardian rules in the process.
* WrongfulAccusationInsurance: In ''Last Sacrifice'', whilst trying to [[spoiler:[[ClearMyName clear her name]] of murder]], she breaks out of prison, resists arrest, assaults fellow guardians, and steals cars. She faces no consequences.

[[folder:Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir]]
->''Everyone here thinks they know who I am.''

Rose's best friend, a royal Moroi who is [[LastOfHisKind the last remaining member of the Dragomir family]] after her parents and brother were killed in a car crash. Throughout the books, she has to do a lot of political maneuvering, especially at the Royal Court, to live up to the ancient name she carries.

Played in the film by Lucy Fry.
----
* AlphaBitch: Even more so than Rose, though she has a more agreeable personality. She charms her way into the center of social life at the Academy, using the prestige of her wealth and princess status. She ingratiates herself to all the power players of the social scene, seduces Aaron (her former boyfriend), and all to isolate Mia Rinaldi.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: A sweet princess, sure, but her spirit abilities are nothing to laugh at.
* BrokenPedestal: She idolizes her loving brother Andre following his death. She learns after his death that he was a casanova who mistreated non-royal Moroi girls. She is thoroughly disappointed and crushed at the revelation, and finds it hard to accept that side of her brother. She also always believed that her father Eric was a good guy, so [[spoiler: she's very upset to learn that he cheated on her mother once]].
* TheCallPutMeOnHold: All young [[OurVampiresAreDifferent Moroi]] have elemental magic since birth, but in their adolescence they "specialize" when [[ElementalPowers one element of the four]] grows much stronger than the other three. Lissa is gradually growing depressed because she still hasn't specialized at age sixteen, but we later learn that this is because [[spoiler: she has specialized in spirit, a forgotten fifth element few people have nowadays, which involves uber-powerful abilities like MindControl and [[BackFromTheDead raising people from the dead]]. Unfortunately for her, side effects include [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity mental instability]]]].
* CharmPerson: She is naturally charismatic even when not using compulsion. People want to please her and the WeakWilled are slavishly obedient to her.
* CompellingVoice: Her compulsion through eye contact and speech is this. She initially uses it at the Academy to convince students and teachers to let her get way. [[spoiler:Gets upgraded to taking full control of a guard at Tarasov prison, and using him to knock out the others]].
* ColourCodedEyes: She has striking jade-green eyes. Goes well with her nature magic, ability to heal people and animals and make plants grow.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Her storyline is secondary to Rose's, and is always seen through Rose's eyes.
* DieOrFly: She awakened her spirit powers (which includes the power to bring the dead to life, at the possible cost of her own sanity) when a car crash killed her parents, brother, and best friend, while leaving her alive. In the moments after the crash, she unintentionally brought her friend back to life, though at the time she did not realize that she was actually dead.
* DoNotCallMePaul: A minor example. She does not like to be called "Vasilisa". She does not object when Queen Tatiana Ivashkov insists on calling her by her first name, however.
* ElementNumberFive: She discovers she's a spirit user, which puts her outside the regular elemental magic-set.
* FlashbackNightmare: She has nightmares of the accident that killed her parents and brother. "Fire and blood, the smell of smoke, the twisted metal of a car."
* FriendToAllLivingThings: She loves animals and they love her. She has her roomate's cat cosing up to her, and heals a raven. [[spoiler: That is why Victor and Natalie Dashkov brutalize animals-- to see if she can work her spirit magic on them. Unfortunately they tend to be beyond help when she finds them, and the one time they're not beyond help Rose stops her from healing them.]]
* GoodisNotSoft: She may be a gentle soul, but she will hurt you if you mess with the ones she loves. [[spoiler: She once got Wade Voda to use a baseball bat to trash his own room and she was going to force him to further hurt himself. All he did was take advantage of a human feeder]].
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Kind-hearted and blonde. She has angelic-looking blonde hair and typically goes out of her way to care for people and animals.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Formerly. She used to go to "all the royal parties and wild drunken festivities" before she and Rose escaped St. Vladimir's Academy. [[spoiler: In ''Blood Promise'', she returns to this type of behavior to a self-destructive degree, which is a result of Avery Lazar's influence on her]].
* HealingHands: All part of the spirit power package. She can lay her hand on people and animals to heal their injuries, no matter how close to death they are. In Rose's case, she resurrected her by healing lethal injuries. She also heals Christian Ozera in the climax of ''Vampire Academy'' when he is moments away from dying from an injury cause by a psi-hound's attack. She also temporarily cures Victor Dashkov from Sandrovsky's Syndrome (though completely under duress) earlier in the same book.
* TheHighQueen: [[spoiler: She is eventually elected Queen of the Moroi in ''Last Sacrifice''. She is beautiful, calm, and regal, and intends to use her authority to resolve the injustices of the Moroi world.]]
* JediMindTrick: As a spirit-user, she is capable of these as well. She gets to use it to enter Tarasov prison while hiding Eddie Castile's real features and making Rose and herself appear as common humans.
* KickedUpstairs: [[spoiler: She becomes the new Moroi Queen in ''Last Sacrifice''. This is a useful position, but limits her role in the spin-off series, ''Literature/{{Bloodlines}}''. She merely supervises and gives orders, no longer getting personally involved in missions]].
* LastOfHerKind: She is the only Dragomir left. [[spoiler: At least until ''Spirit Bound'', where it's revealed that she has an illegitimate half-sibling]].
* LightFeminineDarkFeminine: The light feminine to Rose's dark feminine. Rose is the seductive, temperamental, and violent of the duo while Lissa is the more light-hearted, even-tempered, and angelic-looking of the two.
* LetsGetDangerous: She is usually not the fighting type. [[spoiler: However she manages to knock out an attacking Reed Lazar with a single punch, and later faces Dimitri the Strigoi in a fight and manages to stake him, getting severe burns in the process]].
* ManipulativeBitch: She weasels her way out of any situation using only words. For example, she manipulates the usually strong-willed Camille Conta, a royal girl, to act as a defender to Rose's reputation. She manipulates Aaron (her former boyfriend) to get back together with her, while she truly finds him boring. This ensures the further isolation of Mia Rinaldi.
* MasterOfIllusion: She exhibits such powers in certain moments. Her first notable feat is making Jesse Zeklos have the illusion of spiders crawling all over him.
* MessianicArchetype: A charming, beautiful and naturally regal princess who heals the wounded, inspires the common people and [[spoiler: brings back Strigoi to their original state]].
* NoSparks: Her relationship with her first boyfriend Aaron. She might have lost her virginity to him, but she never was that much into him.
* OfficialCouple: With Christian Ozera.
* OverlyLongName: Her full name is a minor example: Vasilisa Sabina Rhea Dragomir.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her parents and brother died in a car crash two years before the beginning of the series.
* PrincessClassic: She fits all the bullet points of refined royalty. She is actual royalty by birth, she is a MessianicArchetype (though not a virgin), she is beautiful, good with animals, wears elegant clothes, and needs protection from her guardians.
* ProperLady: She is gentle, strong-willed, a {{Socialite}}, is loyal to the people she cares about, has proper manners, is kind-hearted and beautiful, and is naturally upper-class.
* PsychicLink: She and Rose have a one-sided mental bond through which Rose can see through her eyes at will. This comes from the fact that she used her rare ability to control the element Spirit to unknowingly bring Rose back to life after a car accident. Her power is also PowerAtAPrice and can make her very depressed or downright insane with overuse, and Rose can take the effects away from her and suffer them herself.
* RebelliousPrincess: She is dating a bad boy in Christian Ozera. She is mostly obedient to Queen Tatiana Ivashkov, but rebels against her mentor's expectations when it comes to her dating life.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Rose's red. She tends to be obedient, reserved, and intellectual, in contrast to the passionate, defiant, often violent and impulsive Rose.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She is certainly a big part of the story and doesn't sit around.[[spoiler: She helps break Victor Dashkov out of Tarasov prison in ''Spirit Bound'', her spirit powers being the key element of the plan. She trains on how to stake Strigoi and manages to use her training on Dimitri to bring him back to his former dhampir state. She is part of the plan to break Rose out of prison in ''Last Sacrifice'' and works hard to [[ClearTheirName Clear Her Name]] by investigating the murder of Queen Tatiana Ivashkov.]]
* SelfHarm: She used to cut herself when depressed.
* TheSmartGirl: She has excellent and consistently high grades. [[spoiler: She later uses her intellect to investigate a regicide and simultaneously work on the mental challenges presented to candidates in the running to become the Moroi monarch. She does well on both fronts]].
* SoulPower: Her brand of magic. She uses spiritual energy for a variety of effects.
* SpoiledSweet: Rich but not conceited or arrogant. She is generally kindhearted and loving. She is also friendly and generous with Rose, while most other royals treat their guardians as servants.
* TheUnfavorite: A major source of angst for her is how she was always walking in her brother's shadow.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: As a Moroi spirit user she is effected mentally by spirit-use, as it is drawn from herself (as opposed to an element, such as air). And the more she uses it, the worse it gets. It manifests as her becoming extremely depressed at one point, which causes her cutting.

[[folder: Dimitri Belikov]]
->''If I let myself love you, I won't throw myself in front of her. I'll throw myself in front of you.''

Rose's mentor and Lissa's guardian, a respected guardian in his twenties. He is a tough, no-nonsense Russian, and even when Rose starts developing feelings for him, it takes him a long time to admit he has them too.

Played in the film by Danila Kozlovsky
----

* AntiHero: Dimitri is heroic; however, he is also rather brooding, intense and mysterious and therefore doesn't exactly exhibit the classic traits of the ideal hero.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler: His return from Strigoi to Dhampir is treated as this.]]
* BadassLongcoat: He is often seen wearing a long, black coat as part of his attire. Lampshaded in ''Last Sacrifice'', when [[spoiler: Rose gives him a hard time about leaving his duster behind after the guardians invade the Mastrano house, trying to capture him and Rose]].
* BadassNormal: Doesn't have any magical powers like the Moroi or Rose, but is so badass in battle he is considered ''a god'' by other guardians.
* BadassTeacher: A badass dhampir guardian who teaches Rose how to use a stake. Eventually fights in a huge battle against Strigoi and takes several down in the process. Characters outright use the word "badass" to describe him!
* TheBigGuy: Dimitri is very tall at 2,01 meters (6'7") and is also physically broad in physique.
* CameBackWrong: In ''Spirit Bound'', after [[spoiler: his recovery from being a Strigoi]], he is convinced this is the case, as he feels unable to feel proper emotions. [[spoiler: He is wrong]].
* CannotSpitItOut: His feelings for Rose are intense and genuine, but boy does he take his time to admit to them.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: His protective instincts tend to overwhelm his reason. [[spoiler: In ''Spirit Bound'', the royal guard attempts to arrest Rose as a suspect of regicide. Dimitri does not know what is going on but faces twenty elite guardians to protect her. At the time his own life is in the balance, as the Council is trying to decide whether to execute him or not. This act of defiance does not help his case.]]
* CulturedBadass: Likes to read, especially western novels.
* FaceMonsterTurn: [[spoiler: He is turned Strigoi against his will at the end of ''Shadow Kiss'']].
* FirstGuyWins: His relationship with Rose stands strong as the OfficialCouple in the end. He is the first guy Rose meets in ''Vampire Academy''. Mason Ashford is introduced somewhat later and Adrian Ivashkov in ''Frostbite''. They are the other two strong contenders for Rose's heart but are outclassed.
* HeroicBastard: He is the illegitimate son of Olena Belikova and a royal Moroi ([[spoiler: who is later revealed to be Rand Ivashkov, Adrian's uncle]]). His parents never married, making him a technical bastard. He is genuinely heroic.
* HuskyRusskie: Tall, incredibly strong, and from Siberia.
* IUhYouToo: [[spoiler: Strigoi!Dimitri's inability to tell Rose he loves her makes her realize that he just thought of her as a conquest. It is the main reason she finally decides to get off her drug-addled butt and try to kill him.]]
* MrFanservice: He is described as a "god", and his well-toned physique is frequently mentioned.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: His general reaction after [[spoiler:he is changed from a Strigoi back into a dhampir]] by Lissa in ''Spirit Bound''.
---> "I did a lot of things . . . horrible things." He turned his hands palm-up and stared at them for a moment, like he could see blood. "What I did to her was worst of all--especially because it was her. She came to save me from that state, and I. . ." He shook his head. "I did terrible things to her. Terrible things to others. I can't face her after that. What I did was unforgivable."
* MyGreatestFailure: He feels a lot of guilt over not being able to save his friend, the Zeklos lord he'd been assigned to guard, from a Strigoi attack. It's part of the reason he likes going to mass in the Academy chapel.
* NotQuiteDead: Rose receives a letter from Dimitri at the end of ''Blood Promise'', after she had staked him and considered him truly dead. The letter lets her know that he survived.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: With Rose]].
%% * SensualSlavs: Male example.
* SexyMentor: To Rose. He is seven years older than Rose, and most of the series plays off their troubles in getting together. By the end, [[RelationshipUpgrade they do]]. The main reason that they're able to get together publicly in the finale is because Rose has finished her education (both mundane and combat-wise) and he's no longer her teacher. Before this occurs, their illicit attraction is only consummated once, and is the subject of blackmail from the BigBad.
* SharpDressedMan: Dimitri is always well-dressed and well put together. He looks stylish when wearing his dusters.
* SheepInWolfsClothing: [[spoiler: Uses this tactic to get Rose in contact with certain Strigoi in ''Last Sacrifice'']].
* SonOfAWhore: He is a minor example, since the dhampir women who end up single mothers (blood-whores, as they're called) genuinely thought that the Moroi guys they slept with loved them.
* StarCrossedLovers: Dimitri's relationship with Rose. Something always tries to come between them and tear them apart. It's subverted in the end, when their relationship is finally accepted and in the open.
* TheStarscream: As Galina the Strigoi's lieutenant, he schemes to kill her and lay claim to her criminal empire. Eventually he does just that.
* TheStoic: He's known to be calm, cool, collected and he rarely loses his cool or his temper.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Dimitri is Type 1. He is calm, cool and composed most of the time and he is not particularly emotional by nature.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's described to be extremely tall (2,01 meters/6'7") with chocolate-brown eyes and long, dark hair which he wears in a ponytail. He is also described to be very handsome and rugged in physical appearance with God-like angular, masculine features. In terms of his physique, he is lean, well-built and muscular.
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler: Fits the bill once he becomes Strigoi. He fights his own former-lover Rose and abuses her.]]
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: [[spoiler: He angsts quite a bit about all the innocents he had killed while a Strigoi.]]
* TroubledButCute: Dimitri is very attractive but boy, does he have a lot of issues. He had a troubled home life, was forced to abandon his family to become a guardian, his first Moroi charge (Ivan Zeklos) was killed by Strigoi, he has a troubled conscience over the Strigoi [[spoiler: and later humans]] that he has killed, struggles to accept his love for Rose while feeling that he took advantage of his student, and is mentally scarred by his time spent as a Strigoi.
* WeCanRuleTogether: [[spoiler: He is turned into a Strigoi and eventually comes face to face with his ex-girlfriend Rose. He wishes to turn her into a Strigoi too and uses this as one of methods to coerce her. It nearly works, but she eventually manages to decline]].
* WifeBasherBasher: His father used to abuse his mother. A thirteen-year-old Dimitri beat up his father to defend his mother.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Christian Ozera]]
Lissa's primary love interest. He is an outcast because his parents willingly became Strigoi. He's a royal Moroi who holds radical ideas about fighting against Strigoi. He specializes in Fire magic.

Played in the movie by Dominic Sherwood
----
* BadassBookworm: His intelligence is mainly spotlighted in the first novel, when he figures out the nature of Lissa's magic. He is very intelligent and observant, deducing things out of simple clues. He proves to be badass in ''Shadow Kiss'', when his fire powers kill many Strigoi.
* DeadpanSnarker: Of the TallDarkAndSnarky variation. Some of his first sarcastic words to Lissa: "I love pity parties. I wish I'd brought the hats. What do you want to mope about first? How it's going to take you a whole day to be popular and loved again?"
* FriendlessBackground: Had no friends until warming up to Lissa and Rose. Went with his status as a social outcast.
* IcyBlueEyes: His most striking physical feature. Goes well with his coolness as a bad boy, and contrasts his actual fiery personality and powers.
* LonersAreFreaks: A spooky, slightly violent guy with a shady family and no friends who hangs out at the church. He is treated as a freak and a "Strigoi-wannabe" by his classmates.
* LonerTurnedFriend: and/or boyfriend. He was a social outcast who became the beloved boyfriend of Lissa and a good friend to Rose.
* OfficialCouple: With Lissa.
* ParentalAbandonment: His parents, Lucas and Moira Ozera, were royal Moroi who voluntarily turned into Strigoi. They were killed before his eyes when he was very young.
* PlayingWithFire: His main power. He is a fire user. His first impressive feat is setting the clothes of Ralf Sarcozy on fire, scaring but not hurting him. He later uses his fire powers to kill Strigoi.
* RealMenCook: Took cooking lessons in school and is proud of it. He prepares special meals for his lady and is not seen as effeminate.
* SecondLove: To Lissa. Her first love was Aaron, who she lost her virginity to. But she was eventually bored with him, while Christian is her true love and holds her interest.
* TroubledButCute: His main appeal for Lissa. He comes from a broken home, his parents turned Strigoi and were killed before his eyes, his aunt who raised him is a social outcast and so is he, he is treated as a freak by classmates and has a bitter attitude towards the world.
