[[folder:The Players (Protagonists)]]
!!As a whole
* ColorCodedCharacters: Neku ranges from blue to purple, Shiki from red to magenta or pink, Joshua is light blue, and Beat is green. They even partner up in ChromaticArrangement Red, Blue, Green order. Rhyme ostensibly would be yellow or orange to complete the set.
** In Another day their color code don't match their auras however. Neku is Blue, Shiki Green, Beat Yellow, Joshua Pink and Rhyme Black.
* DysfunctionJunction: As a result of everyone needing to give up the one thing most precious to them specifically, and often having DarkAndTroubledPast of their own to deal with on top of that, the [[DeadlyGame Reaper's Game]] is designed to set up these. It doesn't help that most of them remember [[spoiler: how they all died.]]
* TheTeam: The whole premise of The Game is predicated on teamwork, without a partner you will cease to exist. Who's teamed up with who and when varies but the main players hit most of the FiveManBand archetypes. Neku is the protagonist and TheHero. Shiki is TheChick, she easily makes friends with the others and has the most feminine interests like fashion. Beat is a DumbMuscle variety BigGuy. Rhyme is TheSmartGuy as she's physically the smallest, drops proverbs and other nuggets of wisdom, and is the brains to Beat's brawn when they're paired up. Joshua is TheLancer as a cheery enigmatic foil to Neku's brooding blunt personality. He also has some traits of the SmartGuy since he knows the most about the game.
* RescuedFromPurgatory: They are trying to achieve this for themselves and for the others.
* VitriolicBestFriends: All of them with Neku.

!!Neku Sakuraba
[[quoteright:180:]][[caption-width-right:180:"All the world needs is me. I've got my values... so you can keep yours, alright?"]]
->Voiced by Creator/KoukiUchiyama (JP) and Jesse David Corti (ENG)

The main character of the game. He suddenly finds himself in Shibuya's Underground (UG) with little in the way of direction. He loves graffiti and street art, but doesn't like to interact with people.
* AntiHero: He's a {{Jerkass}} who only cares about himself, and isn't above [[spoiler: trying to kill Shiki]] when he's pushed to it. He only seems to have insults for everyone, and keeps trying not want to go along with the whole "trust your partner", even though its his ''only'' way to survive. Fortunately, he gets much [[CharacterDevelopment better]].
* AmnesiacHero: During the first week, the reason he can't seem to remember anything other than his name, is due to the fact for him to be able to play the Reaper's Game is [[spoiler: his entry fee was his memories.]]
** Although he does win back his memories, he still can't remember how he [[spoiler: was killed by Joshua to become his proxy.]]
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Shiki's kindness and patience is what helps Neku's CharacterDevelopment to start, and gives him the push to warm up to others. Out of all his partners, she's the one he's the nicest to.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Shares this dynamic with Shiki, as he's a loner who shuts people out and is coping with his issues on opening up again.
* ChickMagnet: A disproportionate number of shopkeepers seem to develop crushes on Neku as their FSG rises.
* CollaredByFashion: His shirt has a massive collar that tends to help with obscuring his face and mouth.
* ComboPlatterPowers: Specifically, ALL the powers. Most people get one pin. Neku can use every single one.
* DeadpanSnarker: The majority of his dialogue, especially when he's still cold towards other people. Shiki and Beat tend to get the brunt of it, but Joshua snarks right back at Neku.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Starts off cold and uncaring about people in general. His character arc revolves around him getting out of that mindset and opening up to people.
* TheDragon:[[spoiler:To Joshua, albeit [[UnwittingPawn without knowing it]]]].
* EasilyForgiven:
** Shiki seems quite easy to forgive Neku for [[spoiler:nearly killing her on Day 2]]. Granted, he was being an idiot, getting himself in a bad situation as well but even so.
** This happens again on Day 4, [[spoiler:after Rhyme's death]] when Neku basically lashes out on the idea of friendship and Shiki calls him out on this, saying he was no different from the Reapers. She later admits that it was kinda harsh. Justified as their situation required cooperation and left no room for bad blood between Partners. Surviving the week took priority on personal feelings.
* EmoTeen: Lampshaded in ''Another Day''. "Must... fight... emo urges..."
* EvenTheGuysWantHim:
** Ignoring the HoYay vibes he gets from Joshua for a moment, there's one point in Week 2 where Minamimoto starts following him and Joshua around, and Joshua wonders aloud whether it's because he's taken a fancy to Neku.
** Also, the various male clerks met throughout the game start getting a little ''friendly'' to Neku after their FSG meter rises.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Doesn't like lying as he puts it to him, isn't right. This was before his character development kicked in too.
* FanBoy: Of artist CAT.
* {{Foil}}: To all three of his partners in varying ways.
* FreudianExcuse: In Another Day, it's suggested that his issues stem from [[spoiler:waiting to meet a friend, only to find that his friend had died in a car accident]]. This may or may not apply in the main game, since after [[spoiler:Rhyme gets erased]], he thinks it is vaguely familiar, but is unable to remember the exact incident.
* GuiltComplex Perceptible throughout the game and Another Day, for reasons owing to his FreudianExcuse.
** Especially at the end, when [[spoiler:his typically snarky demeanor is shattered into a lacrimation shortly followed by his death a second time to Joshua]].
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: Neku keeps his 'phones on to block people out. [[spoiler:The ending shows a shot of him leaving them behind]].
* TheHero: Starts out as a DesignatedHero who's only out to survive, but gradually evolves into a true hero over the course of the game.
* HeroesWantRedHeads: [[spoiler:Shiki meant that much to Neku by the end of week one, that she was made his second entry-fee. Subverted twice over: she's not really a redhead, and Kitaniji made her the entry fee because he ''couldn't'' revive her. However, since Neku is a redhead]]...
* IcyBlueEyes: To go with his snarky, cold, distance personality...[[CharacterDevelopment at first.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser: [[ThePinIsMightierThanTheSword Pins]]! Most Players are limited to a couple, but Neku can use ''all'' of them, including Pins that [[PlayingWithFire burn]], [[MindOverMatter throw things around]], cut, shoot mind bullets, and conjure cans of soda that, uh, heal you. And that's just the starter set.
* IneffectualLoner: Enforced example. If Neku doesn't team up with a partner and learn to cooperate with them, he'll get erased.
* InSeriesNickname: He has several, but "Phones" is used most often.
* IWillFindYou: [[spoiler:Finding Shiki, becomes Neku's entire motivation for winning the game AND putting up with Joshua during the second week]].
* JerkAss -> JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Starts out as incredibly cold toward other people and only concerned with himself, but grows into a more caring individual, albeit one with limited patience for [[JerkAss Joshua]] and [[IdiotHero Beat]].
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: His memories were his entry fee for the first week.
* LeParkour: He did this in an early trailer for the game, but not in the final game. It's later used in VideoGame/KingdomHearts3D, due to the mechanics of [[DreamLand the Sleeping Worlds]].
* MacGuffinGirl: [[spoiler: He gets better by the end of the game]].
* MagicKnight: His ability to use any and every pin makes him very versatile. He's also the only one that has this ability; other Players can only ever [[WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer activate the psych for a single pin]].
* MistakenForGay: By poor, poor Makoto. Once his Friendship Gauge is maxed out, he assumes Neku is only coming into his shop ''just'' to see him.
* MoralityPet[=/=]LivingEmotionalCrutch: [[spoiler: Shiki seems to play this role for him after the first week]].
* MrViceGuy: Starts off as a loner with a serious chip on his shoulder. [[spoiler:[[CharacterDevelopment He eventually becomes a genuine]] NiceGuy [[CharacterDevelopment by the end of the game]]]].
* MysteriousPast: Besides Joshua, his past is the only one out of all the main Players that is never fully explored. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] considering his loss of memories from the outset of the game.
* OddCouple: With every single partner he's ever teamed up with.
* OneHeroHoldTheWeaksauce: He can every use every dang pin the UG throws at him, whereas everybody else is lucky if they can use two.
* OnlySaneMan: Mainly in ''Another Day''
* PsychicPowers: He uses a varied collection of pins to combat the Noise.
* RealMenWearPink: The Lace Bonnet is a lolita headdress, and the Dragon Lady is a {{Qipao}}. They both give bonuses to Neku ''only''. That has some interesting implications, considering character-specific bonuses are normally from items the characters themselves like.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** Neku is the Blue to Kitaniji's Red. Take a look at Kitaniji's HeadphonesEqualIsolation entry .
** Neku also functions as the Blue to Beat's Red.
** He's also the Red to Joshua's Blue, if only because Joshua is much more calm and collected than Neku during the second week.
* ShonenHair: Has spiky orange hair that can obscure his eyes. One of his character portraits even has him playing with one of the spikes on his bangs. According to Sota in ''Another Day'', [[spoiler: Neku used to bring some manga to his hairdresser and ask for similar haircuts, making it literal ShonenHair.]]
* StraightMan: To several characters, but mostly for Beat.
* SuperpowerLottery: He can use every single pin. He basically won every power on the board.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Not as an evil character, but he tends to think of everyone around him as such and treat them accordingly. [[CharacterDevelopment He gets better, fortunately]].
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:He's been working as the Composer's proxy all along.]]
* TroubledButCute: While the only characters that really remark on his cuteness are the shopkeepers, he does have a lot of internal issues he's forced to work through.
* TrueCompanions: Grows into this with all of his partners. [[spoiler: Even Joshua.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: [[spoiler: More so in ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts''. He's more tsun tsun around Joshua, but dere dere with Shiki]].
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler: To Joshua, who killed Neku in order to prove to Joshua whether or not Shibuya was worth saving]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: Once he finally starts to accept Joshua as a friend, they remain incredibly condescending towards each other. He has this sort of relationship with almost all of his allies, but this one is the most pronounced.
* YouHaveOutLivedYourUsefulness:[[spoiler: An inversion of this trope. The Composer kills Neku in order to make him useful to him]].

[[quoteright:200:]][[caption-width-right:200:"Let me in! Tell me what you're thinking!"]]

!!Shiki Misaki
-> Voiced by Anna Hachimine (JP) and Creator/HeatherHoganWatson (ENG)

Neku's first partner in the Reaper's game. Shiki is a cheerful aspiring fashion designer with a stuffed cat named Mr. Mew.
* BareYourMidriff: [[spoiler:Averted by the Real Shiki]].
* TheBeastmaster: Variation 4 with a animated stuffed cat.
* BerserkButton: Loose buttons make her madder than anything, making them a literal Berserk Button.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Higashizawa learned the hard way not to trifle with this girl's emotions.
* {{Brainwashed}}: [[spoiler:By Kitaniji in the first fight with him]].
* BlushSticker: Gets a very faint pair whenever she's flustered and/or embarrassed.
* TheChick: She's the most feminine member of the group by far and she has the easiest time socializing with others.
* CombatStilettos: [[spoiler:Averted in her real form, yet again]].
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: As you can see in her image.
* TheDitz: Shows tendencies of this at first. [[spoiler: It's all a fabrication]].
* TheFaceless: [[spoiler:When you finally see her real self, it's from the mouth down]].
* FanGirl: [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation In Another Day]], at least.
* FanNickName: [[spoiler:Underground Shiki (UG Shiki)]]
* TheFashionista: Just like her friend, Eri. Shiki's such a fashion hound that tries to get Neku to wear some trendier clothes, claiming he could stand to look cooler.
* FreakyFridayFlip: [[spoiler:Shiki gave up her identity as her entry fee, playing the Reaper's Game in the guise of her best friend Eri]].
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Carries around Mr. Mew, a stuffed cat she designed herself and was her first sewing project.
* GreenEyedMonster: [[spoiler:She was jealous of her friend Eri, but gets over her issues after hearing Eri talk about her in Day 6]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:She doesn't take the implications the GM [[HannibalLecture throws at her about her entry fee]] very well. She gets better eventually though]].
* HeyYou -> FirstNameBasis: Neku often calls her "you" or refers to her as "Stalker", but refers to her by her first name after they win against Higashizawa, much to her pleasure.
* {{Hipster}}: In [[OutOfCharacter Another Day]]
* ImpliedLoveInterest: Considering that [[spoiler: she's Neku's entry fee for the second week]], there is a clear romantic vibe between the two of them. Despite this, nothing concrete ever actually comes up and their relationship could just as easily be read as a platonic TrueCompanions one.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: She fights with an animated stuffed cat named Mr. Mew that she made by herself when she was little. [[DemonicDummy Shiki doesn't actually control him, however]]... [[EmpathicWeapon but at least he's pretty nice]]. [[AllThereInTheManual The manual states that she has a pin called "Groove Pawn" that is what's animating Mr. Mew]].
* ItsPersonal: With Higashizawa, who uses mind games [[spoiler:about her selfishness and jealousy of Eri]] to screw with her.
* PstandardPsychicPstance: Occasionally uses this pose, fitting how she is the one animating Mr. Mew.
* MarionetteMaster: We did say something about her stuffed cat, right?
* {{Meganekko}}: [[spoiler:[[ Shiki's "real" self]]]].
* MegaNeko: At her highest Fusion level, Shiki can make Mr. Mew grow into a giant [[EyeBeams Eye Beam]]-spewing cat.
* NiceGuy: A female example. She's very easy to get along with and is the most part quite patient and supportive of Neku.
* NiceHat: The hat she ([[spoiler:or Eri]]) wears was designed by Eri and sewn by Shiki, just like everything else in their wardrobe. Shiki uses the hat to wear her Pins.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She's sharper than she lets on.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: [[spoiler:Happens to her in endgame, just like 90% of the cast who get brainwashed by the Red Player Pin]].
* RedHeadedHero: Well heroine as you can see above. [[spoiler:Though not in her real appearance]].
* ShipperOnDeck: Another Day has her as a YaoiFangirl, and she's happily excited about it.
* ShrinkingViolet: [[spoiler:Her true personality]].
* SkirtOverSlacks: Can be seen wearing this [[spoiler: as her true self]] fitting her focus on fashion.
* StepfordSmiler: Shiki poses as [[spoiler:her best friend Eri]] because she thinks the ''real'' her is "inadequate".
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Set this skirt just an inch lower and you have a game rated 16 and above. [[spoiler:Not so with her real self, though]]...
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Rhyme. [[spoiler:And Tomboy to Eri]].
* YaoiFangirl: [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation She doesn't hide it very well in Another Day]].
-->'''Shiki:''' I'm coming too. If anything happens, I wanna be there to see--I mean stop it.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: Parodied: this is the explanation for [[spoiler: her appearance]] in Another Day. And when we say you, [[BreakingTheFourthWall we mean you]].

[[quoteright:200:]][[caption-width-right:200:"Only by allowing strangers ''in'', can we find new ways to be ourselves."]]
!!Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu
-> Voiced by Creator/RyoheiKimura (JP) and Aaron Spann (ENG)

A mysterious boy who showed up in the UG unexpectedly. Despite his air of arrogance and secrecy, his knowledge of the UG becomes helpful to Neku... when he feels like giving it. Has a long history with Hanekoma.
* AgentPeacock: Incredibly camp to the point where he can wear women's clothing from the get go, but also without a doubt the most sickeningly cunning player in the entire game. [[spoiler: The fact that he's the Composer only furthers this.]]
* AmbiguouslyGay: He is just ''fabulous''. [[SlashFic He pretty much scraps the "ambiguously" part in Another Day.]] This is of course [[PlayedForLaughs played for laughs]].
* BeamSpam: His aerial attack fires beams from the sky, which are more powerful than his ground combos and hits an entire group of enemies.
* BecomingTheMask:[[spoiler:Though he does a good job of hiding it, his time with Neku made him grow to see him as a friend.]]
* BigBad: Depending on how you look at it [[spoiler:whether you consider him or Kitaniji to be more of this is purely a matter of perspective.]]
* BigBadFriend: If you go with the above [[spoiler:He killed Neku in order to bring him into the Reaper's Game, then partners with him to set up Kitaniji]].
* BirdsOfAFeather: Once Neku finally comes around to him, the two get along rather nicely due to their shared nihilistic worldviews and love of snarking. Neku even admits that he was the first friend that he could ever relate to during the ending. [[spoiler: This is proven genuine by the game's end.]]
* {{Bishonen}}: He's referred to as "Pretty Boy" or "Prissy Kid" by a few Reapers and is noted to pull off wearing women's clothing almost disturbingly well.
* CharacterDevelopment:[[spoiler:The fact that he spares Shibuya in the end shows that he learned people can change, and legitimately grew to see Neku as a friend.]]
* ChekhovsGunman: If you look closely, you can see him standing near the Statue of Hachiko early in the first week. [[spoiler:He's probably observing his proxy, Neku]].
* ColonyDrop: His Level 3 special drops the Moon onto Earth.
* CrucifiedHeroShot: His idle pose when he's in the air gives off shades of this.
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: His "Jesus Beam", when it's first introduced, kills a Taboo Rhino almost instantly. While it is quite powerful and borders on GameBreaker, it would normally take at least a full combo to do so (and, the opponent being a Taboo noise, Joshua would need the light puck). [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], however, in that Kariya says that if Josh ever used that level of power again, he'd be erased...[[BrilliantButLazy by Uzuki]].
* DeadpanSnarker: He is vastly intelligent and uses it to snark at Neku whenever the opportunity presents itself (which is pretty much all the time).
* DescriptionPorn: Where ramen is concerned.
* {{Expy}}: There is absolutely no way that he isn't based off of [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Kaworu Nagisa]]. Though he has the smugness cranked UpToEleven.
* FalseFriend: The entire plot of his week is determining whether or not he's this. [[spoiler: Turns out he is... or at least he was.]]
* {{Flanderization}}: In the manga, where he goes from AmbiguouslyGay to taking pictures of Neku's ass on his phone.
* GodWasMyCoPilot: [[spoiler:Turns out he's the one in charge of the Reaper's Game as its Composer and is just about regarded as such once this tidbit is revealed.]]
* GigglingVillain: [[spoiler:The kid giggles ''constantly'' and the only expressions he shows tend to fluctuate between "smug", "smartass", and "condescending".]]
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler: Deconstructed. He intentionally gives himself some of these during his time with Neku so that he trusts him more.]]
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Twisted around. He ends up growing to like Neku enough to [[spoiler: take the bullet for him.]] But then [[spoiler: it's revealed he was perfectly fine and only doing it to advance his own plan.]] ''But then'', [[spoiler: He allows Shibuya to continue to exist due to his friendship with Neku.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard[=/=]PyrrhicVictory: [[spoiler:Figurative example of both tropes. While using Neku as the proxy allows him to win the game, the victory becomes completely hollow since Neku develops as a person during the game, which invalidates Joshua's reason for trying to destroy Shibuya in the first place, i.e. Shibuya's people are incapable of change]].
* ImprobableWeaponUser: His cell phone, which he uses to drop objects on enemies. He also uses it to ''[[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic summon beams of holy light]]'' [[spoiler:because he's the Composer]].
* InsufferableGenius: Even more of one than Minamimoto, actually, because of his {{Jerkass}} tendencies.
* ISeeDeadPeople: Joshua knew about the Games before dying himself.
** Notably he's not alone, a few nameless [=NPCs=] can see Noise and Reapers.
* ItsPersonal: Not so much like the other examples, but he has it with Minamimoto, [[spoiler:since he's trying to kill him and take his place as the Composer]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Tends to insult Neku fairly often in a grating tone of voice, particularly when the player isn't doing particularly well in battle. [[spoiler:And the whole killing Neku to use him as a pawn to destroy Shibuya thing.]]
* TheLancer: He's the partner who Neku has the most clashes with throughout their time together, with their entire week being centered around Neku's lack of faith in him. To further this, his worldview is almost identical to the one Neku spends the entire game trying to get rid of.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Implied in the secret ending and by Hanekoma.
* MagikarpPower: When you first get him, he's... not quite as good as Shiki was. He doesn't deal damage until he completes a combo chain and his sidestep isn't anywhere near as useful as Shiki's block. When you get the camera upgrade for his phone, he's a bit better, as he gains the ability to stun enemies, but he's still not very powerful. Then, [[spoiler:when he starts levitating]], he easily becomes the best partner in the game.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:He killed Neku and proceeded to use him to help determine Shibuya's fate.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:He's the Composer, making him Kitaniji's boss.]]
* MeaningfulName: [[spoiler:"Joshua" is a transliteration of the Hebrew name "יהושע." Transliterate that name to Greek and then to English, and you get [[{{God}} Jesus]]]].
* MoralityPet: [[spoiler: Neku could be considered this at the end of the game]].
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:His appearance as a partner isn't his true form and it's implied that he's ageless. The other form he's seen in looks like a much older incarnation of his Player appearance.]]
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:This fits what he can do as the Composer quite well]].
* PurpleEyes: It's one of the first visual clues he isn't quiet like the other players Neku has met so far.
* RealMenWearPink: The ''Frilly Parasol'' is one of his better items.
* RestoredMyFaithInHumanity: [[spoiler:Neku does this for him]].
* SidetrackedByTheGoldSaucer: [[{{Invoked}} Proof that Square-Enix is making]] [[JustOneMoreLevel too many addictive games]]: [[spoiler:the last Secret Report reveals that the reason why he does not show up during the third week is because he was too busy playing Tin Pin in Another Day]].
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:When he shoots Neku]].
* TheSmartGuy: He's without a doubt an absolute genius, [[{{Jerkass}} and boy does he like to rub it in!]] His brains allow for him to keep up with Minamimoto with relative ease and are responsible for him and Neku occasionally bending the rules of the game in their favor. [[spoiler: Justified in that not only is he essentially cheating, but ''he made the rules''!]]
* SmugSmiler: His default expression.
* StealthPun: Yoshiya = [[spoiler:YHVH = {{God}}]]
* TheCorrupter: Passively encourages Neku to give in to his hatred of others [[spoiler:since that's his justification for destroying Shibuya]].
* TokenEvilTeammate: Not exactly evil, but compared to Neku's other partners, Joshua is a smug asshole who hides things from his partner to manipulate him into doing what he wants. He's also the only one of the three who doesn't attempt to reach out to others instead preferring to shut them away, the exact opposite of the game's message. [[spoiler: Maybe him being the BigBad wasn't such a twist after all.]]
* VillainProtagonist: [[spoiler:See Man Behind The Man above and Well-Intentioned Extremist below.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: Once Neku comes around to him, their relationship remains incredibly snarky and antagonistic but [[spoiler: Neku is left extremely guilty after his apparent death and claims that Joshua was the first friend he could ever relate to,, and Joshua ends up sparin Shibuya because of the bond he forged with Neku.]] Even their battle dialogue is extremely snarky.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:He was using the Reaper's Game to cast his final judgment on Shibuya and wipe it from existence, claiming that the complacency of its population marks it as a stain on the world in his eyes. Luckily he is convinced otherwise.]]
* WhamEpisode: Joshua's entire week is one of these. All of Neku's work in the previous week is rendered meaningless as he has to replay the game, this time with Shiki, the one person he'd grown close to as his entry fee. Beat is now a reaper out for his blood and the Noise can now attack at random and are much, ''much'' stronger. To make matters worse, Joshua is unbelievably smug, keeps secrets from Neku and may or may not have killed him in the first place. [[spoiler: And at the very end when Neku finally realizes Joshua wasn't his killer, Joshua takes the bullet for him leaving Neku broken and with a massive guilt complex. ''Then'' Joshua reveals himself at the very end of the game to be TheChessMaster and planned the entire week from the beginning to break him.]] The entire week essentially ''undoes'' all of Neku's character development!
* WillfullyWeak: [[spoiler:{{Averted}} and justified via Secret Reports. Since he's from a different plane, it causes him to look much younger, lose several of his abilities, and lowers his power output. However, this lets him look like he's a participant in the game, so the Reapers completely ignore him while he makes his own plots.]]
* YaoiGuys: Quite possibly an AffectionateParody to this in the bonus level Another Day. Shiki [[ShipperOnDeck is happily supporting it]].

!!Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito
[[quoteright:240:]][[caption-width-right:240:"Come back when you grow a pair!"]]

-> Voiced by Subaru Kimura (JP) and Crawford Wilson (ENG)

A hot-blooded young skater who'll go out of his way to protect his friends, no matter the cost to him. While Neku likes to keep his thoughts to himself, Beat will always say what's on his mind.
* AllThereInTheManual: [[spoiler:The manual outright says Neku will eventually partner up with him no matter what. In fact, the order Neku partners up with his three allies are in order: Shiki, then Joshua, then Beat]]. It also reveals that he uses a pin named Respect to [[ImprobableWeaponUser control his skateboard]].
* BigBrotherInstinct: [[spoiler:His motivation towards Rhyme. He values her more than anything]].
* BigEater: Probably, judging by his appetite in Another Day and his "I Live for Food" pin.
* BerserkButton: His EmbarrassingFirstName.
* TheBigGuy: Unlike the other kids, he's got some meat on his bones and has the strength to back it up.
* BoisterousBruiser: "Come back when you grow a pair!"
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Develops one with [[DeadpanSnarker Neku]] during their partnership. In the [[AlternateContinuity Another Day]] continuity, he's a stand-up comedian with Rhyme, as well.
* BookDumb: Beat's not particularly intelligent, but his impliedly-horrible performance at school doesn't seem to have much to do with how smart he actually is.
* BrotherSisterTeam: [[spoiler:With Rhyme, though she doesn't realize it]].
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: His first instinct is usually to whale on whatever is causing problems for him, giving him the appearance of a thug, but deep down he's a pretty sensitive and caring fellow.
* CannotTellAJoke: In Another Day, his attempts at comedy fall flat at best.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Especially evident with his interactions with Konishi, who's ''vastly'' more intelligent than he is.
-->'''Kariya:''' If you fight us, you die. Right now, you're treadin' on thin ice.\\
'''Beat:''' Ha! You're the idiots, yo. I aint treadin' on thin ice! Shibuya ain't cold enough for ice, stupid!\\
'''Uzuki, Kariya, Neku:''' ''[[[VisibleSilence ......]]]''
* CoolBoard: [[ImprobableWeaponUser Hell yeah]].
* {{Determinator}}: On the 7th day [[spoiler:of his week, he starts to fade out due to not having erased any Players or scored any other points as a Reaper. His reaction? He just "pulls himself together" and keeps on fighting.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: You'll either hate or love his Fusion Star mechanic. If the cards are properly placed, you can potentially get enough stars for a Level 2 special move in a single combo, but it's often hard to find the cards you need, and you lose all of them if you take too long.
* DoNotCallMePaul: His real name is "Daisukenojo," which he hates.
* DumbBlond: He's... not that smart. It's noticeable by just about everyone in game, especially when compared to Rhyme, who's also blonde and younger than he is, but shows more forethought and wisdom than he does.
* DumbMuscle: He's not a bright kid, but he's strong.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:First week, after Rhyme gets erased]].
* EmbarrassingFirstName: His reaction to anyone saying his real name is freak out and maybe threaten them afterwards.
* FireForgedFriends: With Neku, until they [[BashBrothers teamed up]].
* FragileSpeedster: He certainly knows how to skateboard, but doesn't do it in a way that could be called "safe." He's also incredibly fast on his board [[spoiler:while he's a Reaper]], but doesn't have a lot of defense.
* GlassCannon: Same as the above; great at damage-dealing, not-so-great at damage-taking.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Beginning of the third week]].
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He doesn't hold a very high opinion of himself at all. [[spoiler:This is after seeing how his actions ended up hurting his sister the most, which was something he never wanted]].
* HotBlooded: Although Beat claims that before he came to the UG, he was rather laid back and would only take things at his own pace.
* IdiotHero: Exemplifies it, due to his very simplistic nature. [[spoiler:He wants to turn this around though.]]
* ImplausibleBoardingSkills[=/=]ImprobableWeaponUser: Beat fights using his skateboard, which involves him vaulting forward and grinding the board across enemy faces. He can even repeatedly bounce on foes as his aerial attack. All this is done while Beat is essentially stationary; he does not build momentum for any of his skateboard attacks.
* ItsPersonal: With Konishi, for [[spoiler:destroying Rhyme's Noise and reverting her to a pin right in front of him, then threatening to break the pin]].
* JiveTurkey: Yo. The localization has him speaking this way. His speech in the Japanese version was that of a typical delinquent.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: He has a sister, [[spoiler:Rhyme]], who he feels responsible enough for to [[spoiler:do a FaceHeelTurn to save her]].
* LargeHam: An in-universe example, too. His comical overreactions get lampshaded by other characters, one who even remarks it looks like something out of a [[MediumAwareness comic book]].
* {{Malaproper}}: Substituting "vegetant" for "vigilant" and "imprecious" for "impressive" is only the start.
* {{Mangst}}[=/=]ManlyTears: After [[spoiler:what happened to Rhyme]], he gets prone to doing this.
* MementoMacGuffin: Rhyme's pendant becomes one for him. [[spoiler:[[ChekhovsGun It becomes quite important]] later on, when Neku finds it on the ground and returns it to Beat, who later returns the favor by saving his life]].
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: [[spoiler:As a Reaper, he just ignores his duties outright]].
* NiceHat: A black hat with a large skull design. It matches Rhyme's hat nicely.
* TheNicknamer: Aside from Rhyme, he tends to refer to everyone else by some moniker, generally based on their appearance. Neku is "[[HeadphonesEqualIsolation Phones]]", Kariya and Uzuki are "[[OralFixation Lollipop]]" and "[[YouGottaHaveBlueHair Pinky]]" respectively, and so on.
* OffModel: A very minor example. He is shown wearing a silver band on his right ring finger on the game's cover art, but it is absent from his sprites and the rest of the game's promotional art. In-game, the times he's shown wearing it can be counted on one hand.
* PluckyComicRelief: In Another Day and to a lesser extent in the main game. Neku's week with Shiki was a [[DefrostingIceQueen learning experience]], his week with Joshua was [[WhamEpisode traumatic]], but his week with Beat tends to be seen as the most light-hearted, at least whenever [[TheBaroness Konishi]] isn't around. Beat spends most of the game being HotBlooded and getting into humorous situations because of it.
* RedOniBlueOni: An alternate red to the cool-headed (blue) Neku, who describes him at one point as a "freakin' rhino".
* SayMyName: Will sometimes yell "RHYYYYYME!" if you get a Game Over with him as your partner.
* SenselessSacrifice: [[spoiler:See below]].
* ShrineToTheFallen: [[spoiler:Gets one where he died]].
* SiblingYinYang: [[spoiler:Again with Rhyme]].
* SimplemindedWisdom: While he's definitely the dumbest of Neku's partners, he's too straightforward of a guy to keep secrets from him, which, combined with having already been to Hell and back with the other, make them the most effective team when they pair up.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Fits with his thug image and shows off his muscular arms.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:His HeelFaceTurn in Day 1 of the third week provided Neku with the partner he needed to survive]].
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:Tragically tried doing this to save Rhyme from getting hit by a car, but managed to get them both killed instead. A more successful version of this happens later on when he saves Neku from an unexpected attack during the final moments of the game]].
* TooDumbToFool: [[spoiler:Konishi suggets - though perhaps [[SoreLoser disingenuously]] - that this is why she couldn't get the better of him]].
* ToughLove: [[spoiler:His parents were constantly pressuring him to get better grades, be more like his sister, and berating him when he didn't give results. Eventually he just gave up trying all together]].
* TheUnfavorite: [[spoiler:Compared to Rhyme]].
* UnskilledButStrong: Shiki uses her doll to deliver punches and uppercuts. Joshua uses his phone to play with highs and lows, which results in summoning things from bikes to cars to drop on enemies. Beat justs rams into things with his skateboard.

-->'''Beat:''' [[spoiler:Yo, I could rob a bank and she'd still be there for me]].
* {{Bokukko}}/{{Shorttank}}: She has a very boyish appearance and doesn't speak very girly for her age.
* CheerfulChild: Tends to take everything with a calm smile and some words of wisdom.
* TheCutie: To the point where [[spoiler:even her Noise form is a RidiculouslyCuteCritter]].
* DumbBlonde: Averted. She is very smart for her age and always has a proverb or three to say.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She's the most innocent of the characters in the game being the youngest and sweetest.
* HeroicSacrifice[=/=]TakingTheBullet:[[spoiler: She does this to save Beat from getting erased by an ambush Noise]].
* KillerRabbit: Don't let her cute face above fool you, she's just as capable as the other players of using pins to win this game. [[spoiler: Made a bit more literal when she became a cute Squirrel Noise after being erased]].
* MoralityPet: [[spoiler: Rhyme might've been this for Beat, if her getting erased and her brother joining the Reapers, is anything to go by]].
* NiceGirl: Is always calm and reassuring with Beat, whereas most of the other characters express at least ''some'' annoyance when putting up with him.

* OnlyMostlyDead: [[spoiler:She's saved from erasure by Mr. H turning her into a pin.]]
* ParentalFavoritism: [[spoiler:Unfortunately for her brother [[TheUnfavorite Beat]], who received the brunt of their criticism as a result]].

* SacrificialLamb: [[spoiler:She gets erased in the first week by falling into a not-so-obvious trap set by Kariya and Uzuki]].
* SatelliteCharacter: An odd justified version of this for Beat. Her fee for entering the UG was unspecified (and according to the Secret Reports, [[spoiler:gone forever, because she didn't make it to the end of the week]]), Beat's fee was [[spoiler:her memories of him]].
* SiblingYinYang: [[spoiler:With Beat. They're basically complete opposites in terms of personality and demeanor]].
* SixthRangerTraitor: [[spoiler:In Another Day, she pretends her pins were stolen by the Black Skullers and joins Shooter's Kindred Spirits team, only to betray the Spirits while they were distracted by Kariya and Higashizawa. However, she did this because she thought getting rid of Tin Pin would help Beat focus on his comedy routine more]].
* StraightMan: To Beat for a while.
* SummonMagic: [[spoiler: Eventually, Neku can summon her Noise form to attack, via the Rhyme Pin, starting with the end of the fight with Tigris Cantus]].
* WomenAreWiser: She's much smarter than Beat.

-> Kariya is voiced by Creator/AnriKatsu (JP) and Andrew Kishino (ENG)

A Harrier Reaper duo who do a lot of the ground work during the Game. Kariya is always laid-back and relishes his job, making a game out of everything with Uzuki, who is almost constantly on edge.

* AffablyEvil: Define ''evil''.
* AlliterativeName: Koki Kariya.
* AlmightyJanitor: Kariya is actually one of the most powerful Reapers around. To the point even ''[[HotBlooded Beat]]'' is insecure about fighting him at first. Although he's only an [[AlmightyJanitor Almighty Janitor]] because [[spoiler: [[ShipTease he wants to hang out with Uzuki]]]].
* AnimeHair: Kariya. It's... hard to describe; it's like he combed and styled the front of his hair and then left the back of it a mess. Visually, it seems to be a combination of a slicked-back style and an afro.
* BigBad: Uzuki in Another Day. [[spoiler: She was being used by Higashizawa the whole time, though]].
* BlankWhiteEyes: Uzuki gains these when she's ''significantly pissed off''.
* BrilliantButLazy: Kariya has refused several promotions because he prefers working on the field. Beat is rightfully afraid of fighting him.
* CoolShades: Kariya wears a cool-looking pair of orange-tinted shades.
* CantCatchUp: After Uzuki's defeat, she reveals that the reason she's so desperate to go up on the ranks [[spoiler:is because she feels guilty for Kariya refusing his own promotion just so he could keep hanging out with her]]. In her own words:
-->'''Uzuki:''' [[spoiler:I don't wanna be your freakin' ball and chain!!!]]
* TheDarkChick: They ''both'' qualify.
* DecliningPromotion: Kariya is more powerful than his rank suggests, and it is revealed that he has been doing this for a while.
* DualBoss: You eventually end up fighting both of them at the same time.
* EvilCounterpart: All of Kariya's attacks are supercharged versions of Neku's psychs.
* GracefulLoser: More in regards to Kariya, but Uzuki will follow if she must. When Neku and [[spoiler: Beat]] defeated them, they were willing to hand over what the Players wanted, [[spoiler: before it turned out to be fake]], which not even the Harriers knew.
* HairTriggerTemper: Uzuki gets angry ''very'' easily, but her biggest triggers involve anything that may cost her chances at a promotion.
* HaveANiceDeath: If you lose to them during their boss fight:
-->'''Kariya:''' So Uzuki, how 'bout that ramen?
* KarmaHoudini[=/=]EasilyForgiven: [[spoiler:Neku, and ''Beat'' (in fact, ''especially'' Beat, who insisted they be spared) never really call out Kariya and Uzuki on erasing Rhyme, or even hold a grudge against them after the fact. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] by the fact that it's their job (they were ordered to set a trap for Players) and it's what keeps them alive. Otherwise, they're {{Punch Clock Villain}}s.]]
* LastNameBasis: Everyone calls Kariya by his last name.
* LaughablyEvil: Their interactions together are often quite funny.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[ Rush Hour]]
* MirrorBoss: The pair have a fusion attack and a light puck and have attacks that mimic some of the ones you can get from pins.
* OfCorsetsSexy: An odd example with Uzuki, considering it's over a turtleneck.
* OralFixation: Kariya's dango, to the point he is referred to as Lollipop by Beat.
* PunchClockVillain: Both of them are just doing their job and for treat it as such. They even called out how screwed up the Reaper's Game had become once it gets extended.
-->'''Beat:''' Quit screwin' with us!\\
'''Kariya:''' Um, villain? Screwin' with you is my job.
* RedOniBlueOni: Kariya's the blue (calm and laid back, also very affable), Uzuki's the red (easily excitable and easily angered).
* SleevesAreForWimps: Kariya. Serves as a possible indication as to how strong he really is.
* ThoseTwoBadGuys: See above. They appear frequently, but aren't always antagonizing the heroes.
* {{Tsundere}}: Uzuki, mildly, towards Kariya. It's heavily implied that part of the reason she wants to advance her career is so she wouldn't have to hold Kariya back, who's implied to have declined his promotion because he wanted to stay at her level.
* UngratefulBastard: Uzuki complains if Neku saves her from Taboo noise, while Kariya is relatively appreciative.
* UnholyMatrimony: They don't get married, but one of the later conversations reveals that [[spoiler:the reason Kariya doesn't advance through the ranks isn't just laziness, it's also so he can be with Uzuki. Her reaction hints this isn't unwelcome]]. Although [[spoiler:she still strives to advance herself so that then Kariya could advance with her, and she wouldn't feel like she's dragging him down]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: They seem at odds with each other at first (more on Uzuki's part, who's flustered by her partner's mellow attitude, than Kariya), but it's eventually revealed that they're pretty good friends.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Kariya with the orange and Uzuki with the pink. Lampshaded by Beat.

Acting as a proxy Game Master for Kitaniji on the first week (Shiki's chapter). He chooses to hide himself from the players until the 7th day and attempts to pound them to pieces with his immense strength.

* BigBad: [[spoiler:The REAL Big Bad of Another Day, having used Uzuki and the Black Skullers to "purify" Tin Pin]].
* TheBrute: The most straight-forward of the Game Masters, who relies on his size and strength to see him through battle.
* {{Determinator}}: The winning condition for the final day of the first week allows him to be able to give up without being erased, but he chooses to fight to the death instead.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Sorry, bucko, [[YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle game's not over yet]].
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Has glowing eyes for some reason. His food puns added in with his interest in Shiki don't help alleviate the creep factor.
* EnergyAbsorption: Can regain health if players attack him at the wrong time.
* EvilTastesGood: He loves making food-based puns.
* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:Of Another Day, ironically enough, with Shooter and Shinji Hashimoto as the True Final Bosses]].
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:Since it's possible he was unaware of the scheme Kitaniji was concocting, he treats his defeat by Neku and Shiki with a great amount of respect and dignity, unlike the other Game Masters that take up the mantle after him.]]
* TheHeavy: He does most of the Black Skullers' work in Another Day. [[spoiler: He did this so he would end up with the pins in the end, wishing to take them from everyone in Shibuya]].
* LargeAndInCharge: The largest of the Game Masters and the only one besides the final boss whose Cantus form takes up both screens simultaneously in the DS version (the Noise forms of the other [=GMs=] simply take up one screen and use shadows of themselves to take up the other screen if they have to).
* LargeHam: When fighting.

* VocalDissonance: He apparently sounds like a booth babe in Another Day, or at least Neku confuses him for one before actually seeing Higashizawa in person. [[SayItWithHearts His speaking with notes and hearts is done to exacerbate this.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:His motives in Another Day. See The Starscream entry above. He sees the error of his ways once he's beaten, though]].
* WhamLine: [[spoiler:"You're dead. Don't you know?"]]
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He is apparently ''20 years old.'' The somewhat "youthful" design of his shoes gives this away via implication, but the lower half of his body is rarely seen in the game itself.

[[quoteright:225:]][[caption-width-right:225:"This is my Game. And I only allow two things. Flawless calculations... and beauty!"]]
-> Voiced by Takayuki Fujimoto (JP) and Andy Hirsch (ENG)

The Game Master on the second week (Joshua's chapter). Minamimoto is a considered a "loose cannon" by the other Officers because he prefers to work by his own rules, rather than those of the game. He's called that for good reason, too: He's crazy and working against the interests of his co-workers. [[MadMathematician He's also quite fond of math]].
* BadassBoast: Searching some of his junk piles will reveal notes that have him boasting about, among other things, being more awesome than gravity and air.
* BadassBookworm: The dude trash talks people with math and kicks everyone's asses for the fun of it.
* BerserkButton: Sho has never gotten angry in the main story. However in Another Day [[spoiler: he's generally angry and drops his usual speech pattern when Ken Doi humiliates him in front of Shooter and the others in regards to Tin Pin. He storms off claiming he's better than Ken Doi. Really odd given how crazy he is in the main story.]]
* BishonenLine: [[spoiler:Let's just say that Minamimoto is even ''more'' good looking as a [[HopelessBossFight Taboo]]]].
* RedRightHand: Well "Black hand" may be more fitting and it isn't quiet his right one as [[spoiler:Both of them change, once he goes Taboo]].
* BrokenAce: Konishi describes him as being perfect in all fields except leadership because of his refusal to work with others. He also has to do everything perfectly or get angry when it doesn't go as planned. In Another Day, we see what happens [[BerserkButton when he fails epically.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Plays by his own rules, attacks both Players and Reapers, and generally causes havoc for everyone in the UG when he's a Game Master. Despite this, he has one of the highest Player erasure records in Shibuya's UG.
* CatchPhrase: "SOHCAHTOA" (this is actually a pun on the Japanese phrase "''Sō ka?''", meaning "I see", "Is that so?", et cetera), "So zetta slow!" ([[ "zetta"]] is the prefix for 10^21, or [[GeniusBonus sextillion]]) "CRUNCH! I'll add it to the heap"... he's got a lot of these.
* EvilGenius: Uses his prodigious math skills to create the rule-breaking Taboo Noise and give himself a Taboo Noise form.
* FaceOfAThug: In ''Another Day'', Neku is afraid that he might mug him if he gets too close. He turns out to be a pretty nice guy despite still being an InsufferableGenius, though.
* FacialMarkings: His "whiskers".
* FlunkyBoss: Sends out several Taboo Noise before attacking directly, and typically has a few out most of the time, usually attacking the partner on the other screen.
* FormulaicMagic: Again, using math to help create the Taboo Noise.
* FunWithAcronyms: [[CatchPhrase "SOHCAHTOA"]]
* GoodWithNumbers: A math fetishist with his love of numbers taken UpToEleven. ''Everything'' involving his schemes can be calculated and manipulated by his use of math. To activate his Level ''i'' Flare, he recites pi.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: [[spoiler:Its very obvious in Another Day that he has issues with Ken Doi. Beside trying to impress him, he doesn't react well to failure. Of course a few hints can be seen in the main game where he's such a perfectionist that even a small mistake will get him rather agitated.]]
* InsufferableGenius: He puts the "pomp" in "psychopomp". And the "psycho", too, for that matter.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:On the last day of the game, he gets "crunched" and chucked under a junk sculpture rather like the ones he was so fond of making. It's implied that he's not dead, though]]...
* {{Kiai}}: His [[CallingYourAttacks battle cries.]] "SINE! COSINE! TANGENT!"

* NotAsYouKnowThem: [[spoiler:He's a straight up good guy in ''Another Day''.]].

* NiceGuy: [[spoiler:Surprisingly in Another Day where he's very helpful toward Shooter and the group coming in and pulling a BigDamnHeroes moment by giving Shooter the ultimate Tin Pin he made himself.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:In his pursuit of the Composer, he outs Konishi's hiding spot on the final day of her mission. Without him being there, it was possible that Neku and Beat wouldn't have found her and been granted the opportunity to clear their mission.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: See BerserkButton above but [[spoiler: if Sho has to drop his speech pattern then you know something is wrong.]]
* PantheraAwesome: His [[OneWingedAngel Noise form]] Leo Cantus.
* ThePerfectionist: Everyone is based on perfect calculations especially how fast he'll erase you.
* SloganYellingMegaphoneGuy: Sort of. He tends to yell his catchphrases through a megaphone. [[spoiler:Until he swaps it for Def Märch's microphone]].
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler:To Joshua, who actually says he enjoys having such a loose cannon around.]]
* TeleportSpam: Makes liberal use of this in both his boss fights, to very frustrating effect.
* TrueArtIsIncomprehensible: [[invoked]] An InUniverse example. The only one who understands his nonsensical junk piles is himself.
* WellDoneSonGuy: [[spoiler:In Another Day, Sho's attitude toward Ken Doi is to get him to acknowledge that he's just as knowledgable about Tin Pin as he is. Given how Another Day pretty much confirms that they're father and son, it would make sense.]]

The Game Master on the third and final week (Beat's chapter). She first appears to be utterly loyal to Conductor Kitaniji, but is much more interested in climbing the corporate ladder.
* TheBaroness: Very cold and calculating. The other Reapers nickname her the "Iron Maiden" for a reason.
* BlondesAreEvil: She's the only blonde on the villain's side.
* CatchPhrase: [[AllAccordingToPlan Just as I predicted.]] which also becomes her [[spoiler: FamousLastWords]] later on.
* CatGirl: Her Cantus form which, unlike the other Game Masters, has an obviously feminine appearance.
* TheDragon: To Kitaniji.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: [[spoiler:Some quips and lines, not to mention Konishi's own behavior hints that she's been planning on betraying Kitaniji since a long time.]]
* TheGlassesComeOff: She takes them off right before getting into fighting mode. It's her ''eyes'' that glint menacingly instead.
* ElegantGothicLolita: She has a more mature take on the fashion style. It also helps make her look more like a secretary.
* FemmeFatalons: Has long black nails. Hard to notice at first.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Unlike most of the other villains, who each have their quirks that prevent them from being seen as irredeemably evil, Konishi lacks any sort of redeemable quality that would dull her villainous edge. She's purely in the business for her own reasons and almost all her actions as a Game Master are extraordinarily calculating and cruel.

* HotTeacher: In Another Day, she's one of Beat's teachers.
* HourglassHottie: Though the majority of the character designs in this game include having thin waistlines, Konishi actually happens to be one of the only characters with enough of a bust to invoke this trope.
* IceQueen: To say she's [[KickTheDog cold-hearted]] would be an understatement. She's pretty much the most ruthless character in the game, especially towards Beat.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:The only method to expose her in the last phase of the fight with her is to use Rhyme's noise pin, which enables Beat to damage her]].
* KickTheDog: Repeatedly with regards to Beat and Rhyme. She even uses her dying words to imply that Beat may have valued Rhyme above all else, but Rhyme didn't hold him in the same regard.
* ManipulativeBitch: Once she takes charge as a Game Master, she spends the majority of her time manipulating just about everyone that's still in the UG. [[spoiler:Her ultimate goal is to become the Conductor and is using everyone - Players, Reapers, even other Game Masters and her superior, Kitaniji - to reach this goal.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: She seems to have the power to bend light, and one of her battle backgrounds [[AmazingTechnicolorBattlefield looks like the game crashed]].
* PantheraAwesome: Her [[OneWingedAngel Noise form]] Tigris Cantus.
* PuzzleBoss: Unlike the previous Game Masters, you can't just whale on her and hope to win. The game provides a subtle hint towards beating her though.
* SexySecretary: Basically fulfills this role for Kitaniji.
* SmugSnake: Because of her intelligence, arrogance, and pride, she takes a lot of pleasure messing with [[IdiotHero Beat]].
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler:To Kitaniji once her true motivations are revealed. See Manipulative Bitch above.]]
* ZettaiRyouiki: As you can see by her image on the right, her stockings and dress ranks her somewhere between A and B on the scale, which is between "Thigh Highs" and "Above the Knee", respectively.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: He's an extremely wise, competent guy but he's also pretty much constantly messing around.
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler:Even more so than Joshua, who he was helping out while secretly doing his own thing off to the side.]]
* CoolShades: Sports a small pair of shades.
* FallenAngel: He is confirmed to at least be [[spoiler: an Angel, to contrast the composer and the reapers]] but he [[spoiler: committed some sort of serious crime in his past to reduce him to this.]]
* HaveANiceDeath: [[spoiler:"Open up your world!"]]
* {{Hipster}}: He's got the vibe going in his fashion sense and playful attitude. He even owns a coffee shop!
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:Revealed in the Secret Reports to be an Angel, a higher order of being than the Reapers and the Composer]].
* OutOfFocus: Doesn't appear at all during the last week. [[spoiler: There's a good reason for this, to the point where the entire post game is essentially piecing together what he was doing during that time.]]
* PantheraAwesome: [[spoiler:His [[OneWingedangel Noise form]] Panthera Cantus]].
* PermaStubble: Has one to go with his slick look.
* ProperlyParanoid: [[spoiler:If the secret reports have anything to go by, Mr. H can't even trust his Another Day self in revealing the crime he has committed to become a fallen angel. This is why he hides in Pork City while searching for Joshua. Turns out that if you talk to Another Day Mr. H without witnessing the real one hiding in Pork City, he warns Another Day Neku to not trust the person who wrote the secret reports scattering around implying that Another Day Mr. H does not want this Neku to be involved with the real Mr. H and will resort to erasing his original self if he has to keep the peace.]]
* RedHerring: [[spoiler:He's not the Composer. Turns out it's ''way, way'' more complicated than that.]]
* RousingSpeech: [[spoiler: Done in a rather strange way. His BonusBoss fight has him yelling motivational one-liners like "Don't let limits slow you!" and "Enjoy the moment!" while he beats you six ways from Sunday.]]
* TitleDrop: In the English translation, in his speech to Neku telling to kid to expand his outlook on the world. It's quoted [[VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou at the top of the main page of the game.]]
* UnreliableNarrator: [[spoiler:His secret reports, particularly when he refers to the "Fallen Angel" in the third person as if it were someone besides him]].
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Fitting, considering he's a hip coffee shop owner.

!!Sota Honjo and Nao
A pair with uncertain circumstances surrounding their death. Both are genuinely nice people, who tell Neku not to give up hope after what happens to him during the second week. Hinted to be a couple but never explicitly mentioned what their relationship is.
* BattleCouple: Being partners with someone comes with the setting for the Reaper's Game, but these two have a lot subtext that implies that they're actually a couple.
* CharacterDeath: Neku doesn't take [[spoiler:their erasure by Minamimoto's Taboo Noise]] very well.
* ChekhovsGunman: They're seen in the RG briefly during the first week.
* DarkHorseVictory: While Neku considers his semifinal Tin Pin Slammer match against Shooter the linchpin of whether or not the Players are erased that day, Sota ends up winning in the finals. With help.
* DarkSkinnedBlond: Both of them are Ganguro.
* {{Kawaiiko}}: Nao-Nao looks a good bit older than the stereotype, but she's a cutesy kogal through and through.
* SpannerInTheWorks: An indirect example only visible in hindsight. [[spoiler:Talking with Sota and Nao causes Neku to realize other people have just as much value as he does, turning him away from the cycle of isolation Joshua has been coaxing him to continue along. This in turn changes Joshua's mind at the very end.]]
* SurferDude: Sota talks like one to compliment Nao's ValleyGirl lingo.
* ThoseTwoGuys: They don't do much for the story until the second week.
* ValleyGirl: Nao is, like, one of them?

Eri is Shiki's best friend. Shiki uses a picture of Eri and herself as the wallpaper for her cellphone. Eri is described as charismatic and popular and she thinks of Shiki as a great friend and seamstress with a keen eye for details.
* TheFashionista: She's very much into the latest fashion and is even a designer herself. She relies on Shiki to make her designs come to life, though.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: The last time the two spoke she [[ComplimentBackfire suggested]] that Shiki isn't suited to designing, [[WhatHaveIDone which she later realized ended up hurting Shiki's feelings]]. [[spoiler:Shiki died before Eri got a chance to apologize for it]].
* NiceHat: [[spoiler:The hat she and Shiki wear was designed by her and sewn by Shiki, just like everything else in her wardrobe. Shiki uses her "incarnation" of it to wear her Pins]].
* OCStandIn: Very little is known about her, since she only actually appears in one day, mentioning that she misses Shiki and that she regrets her taking her advice the wrong way.
* PlotBasedPhotographObfuscation: On Shiki's cellphone-wallpaper, a glare obscures her face [[spoiler:or so we think. It's really hiding Shiki's face]].
* SatelliteCharacter: Her character is largely based around her relationship with Shiki. She is only ever seen talking with a minor character about Shiki.

!!Shuto "Shooter" Dan
A young NPC who is a major fan of Tin Pin Slammer.
* CurbStompBattle: Can possibly occur during Tin Pin, if you're not prepared. Also happens as a in game cutscene in which during the tournament he defeats Neku at the speed of light.
* TheDitz: In Another Day, half the time he isn't listening to the people he's talking to and just wants to challenge them in a game of Tin Pin. He also fails to grasp the gravity of some of the burdens others have with the spirit of Tin Pin.
* {{Expy}}: To pretty much every {{Shonen}} IdiotHero ever. He specifically seems to be a cross between [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} Ash]] and [[Anime/{{Beyblade}} Tyson]].
* FingerlessGloves: Part of his Shonen Hero motif.
* TheHero: [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation Only in Another Day]]. He becomes the "leader" of a TPS team called the [[{{Sentai}} Kindred Spirits]] and names his teammates after [[ColourCodedCharacters colors]]. He's "Red".
* IdiotHero: Only in Another Day.
* NoIndoorVoice: He's pretty excitable and as such, yells a lot.
* TheRival: To Neku and only in [[MiniGame Tin Pin Slammer]].
* ShoutOut: To just about every shonen series there ever was.
* ToBeAMaster: Picture [[Characters/{{Pokemon}} Ash Ketchum]] with a set of Tin Pin Slammer pins.

!!Ken Doi
The owner of the Ramen Don shop in Dogenzaka. He is a friendly businessman who is always looking for ideas on how to improve his ramen. He doesn't like to talk a lot about his past.

* BerserkButton: Mentioning his role in [[spoiler:developing Tin Pin]].
** Also asking about his past in general gets him relatively angry.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: See above. He also gets them in [[spoiler: Week 3, Day 7 if you enter his shop, under the effects of the Red Skull Pin, though he manages to snap out of it]].
* {{Hypocrite}}: He hates the Shadow Ramen store for deviating from traditional ramen recipes, only to realise that he's been doing the exact same thing himself.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:Possibly Sho's father if Another Day has anything to say about it. At one point Sho does call him pops and Ken Doi does ask "When did my kid grow up so fast?"]]
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler:In "Another Day", he turns out to be the elusive Dr. Pin Sr]].

!!Makoto "Mick" Miki
Originally a timid and unsuccessful businessman, he quits his job for Gatito (or, at least, a subsidiary of them) and opens up the Shadow Ramen store in the second week to rival the Ramen Don shop. He is also responsible for helping spread around the Red Skull pins, their purpose becoming much clearer by the end of the game.
* AcquiredSituationalNarcissism: After becoming a success in Week 2, he sports an entirely new appearance and becomes quite arrogant.
* AlliterativeName %%This trope is one of those that doesn't need context, as detailed on the Zero Content page.%%
* MistakenForGay: After opening up [[spoiler:Shadow Ramen]], where he takes up work, watch what he says (and his facial expressions!) when you increase his Friendship Gauge. Well... he mistakes Neku for a gay mistaking ''him'' for gay, anyway.
* SalaryMan: What he started out as, then he tried to be a business mogul, but that backfired on him.
* ThatCameOutWrong: His use of pop-culture catch phrases leaves something to be desired.

!!777 (Triple 7)
Leader of the band [[HeavyMetalUmlaut Def Märch]], which also includes fellow Reapers B.J. and Tenho.
* AntiVillain: Type IV. 777 is pretty nice overall and seems more worried with his band and bandmates than actually being a Reaper. [[spoiler:The only time he fights you, he's even honourable enough to give you a key after Neku spares him. His subsequent [[YouHaveFailedMe erasure]] by Konishi is used as a big KickTheDog moment]].
* EverythingIsAnInstrument: [[spoiler: Tenho steals the band's microphone, which, in turn, is swapped by Minamimoto for his megaphone. The band ends up attempting to incorporate the megaphone into their act]].
* FaceOfTheBand: {{Invoked}} by 777. BJ seems to resent this.
* InformedAbility: Apparently his music is great... but you never get to hear it.
* MauveShirt: [[spoiler:Ends up getting erased before the end of the game.]]
* MurderTheHypotenuse: Less violent variant: [[spoiler: Tenho ends up stealing Def Märch's microphone in order to stop 777 and BJ from fighting and possibly breaking up the band]].
* NobodyLovesTheBassist: BJ is resentful that 777 is always the singer. [[spoiler: Until the Microphone gets stolen]].
* PunchClockVillain: Very much so, as noted above he seems to view reaping as a side job to his band.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Unfortunately ends up facing Konishi's wrath after he lost to Neku and Beat.]]
* StreetMusician: Def Märch is an indie band, and all three members got their start by singing on the streets.

!!Eiji Oji
A big-time celebrity and "Prince of Ennui" in Shibuya's RG whose blog, "F Everything", gets 100,000 hits per day.
* BandwagonTechnique: Whenever he discovers something he likes, he "F's it", and that thing instantly becomes super-popular among his readers.
* {{Bishounen}}: A tall pretty boy with legions of screaming fan girls trailing him. A random thought from one of the [=NPCs=] has the NPC wondering if his girlfriend, who looks like Eiji, is ''really'' a woman.
* BlondGuysAreEvil: Subverted. He ends up being a down to earth guy who just wants some good ramen.
* CelebrityBlog: Runs one.
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: He decides to stop promoting Shadow Ramen once he realizes he's been nothing more than Mick's shill.

The backstage tech of the Def Märch. He is unusually forgetful.
* AmbiguouslyGay: He doesn't react to Makoto's sales pitch, until he hears "Come get some hot stuff!" Then he starts grinning and gets ''really'' close to Makoto before taking a pin.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: In the main game, he's known only as the Tech. His real name can be discovered in a side chapter, though.
* ForgetfulJones: He forgets the fuse needed to light up the stage on Day 3 of Week 1.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: To Makoto in a CrowningMomentOfFunny.
* TheResenter: Implied to resent 777 a little for stealing the spotlight all the time.
* TheSlacker: Perceived as this because of his rampant forgetfulness, which leads him to do things other than what he was tasked to.
* WhoIsThisGuyAgain: Fitting how forgetful he is as a character he seems to be rather forgettable too, which can suit how he is mostly addressed by his job.

!!Ai and Mina
A pair of schoolgirls who are good friends. Lately, their friendship has been put under some strain when Ai suspects Mina is trying to steal her crush, Makoto, away from her, although it all gets cleared up with Neku and Shiki's help.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Ai, to an extent. However, it turns out she does appreciate her friendship with Mina deeply.
* FanGirl: Mina in Another Day.
* FriendshipMoment: Mina buys some tickets to a Tin Pin Slammer event to give to Ai so she can go out with Makoto. Unfortunately, Ai misunderstands her intentions at first, but apologizes as soon as she finds out.
* GreenEyedMonster: Ai gets suspicious of Mina the minute she sees her talking to Makoto alone.
* NiceGirl: Mina, which is contrasted by Ai's easily invoked jealousy.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Mina and Makoto really weren't doing anything together, apart from chatting, but Ai immediately starts to assume the worst when she catches them talking to each other. It didn't help that Mina was trying to keep quiet about her planned surprise, which only added to Ai's suspicions.
* RecurringExtra: Mina, who shows up in more days than her friend Ai.
* {{Joshikousei}}: Just your typical Japanese schoolgirls.
* ThoseTwoGirls: Played entirely straight.

!!Another Day Tutorial Guy/[[spoiler: The Wizard of Slam/Shinji Hashimoto]]
A Reaper-looking person who teaches Neku about Tin Pin.
* BigGood: [[spoiler:Of Tin Pin in the Another Day universe and possibly the main universe]].
* CatchPhrase: "Like a bolt from the blue..."
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler:He helped set up the events of Another Day so the Omega Slammer would be completed]].
* CreatorCameo: [[spoiler:He's the helped invent Tin Pin in game, but in actuality he's ''The World Ends with You'''s producer.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:You can find thoughts in the main game hinting at his appearance. More than that, you can encounter him yourself on Week 2/Day 3 of the main game, the day AFTER you're forced into a Tin Pin Slammer tournament as part of the plot]].
* TrueFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Of Another Day]].
* WalkingSpoiler: The fact that he's anything beyond a random tutorial character is a twist in itself.
* WarmUpBoss: [[spoiler:For the final Tin Pin matches when you first fight him]].

[[caption-width-right:164:"I've got everything you'll ever need. Seriously, I'm, like, not even lying."]]
!!Coco Atarashi
The "Cute Reaper" added in ''TWEWY: Solo Mix''. Does nothing but hang around in the Scramble Crossing, and lets the player buy certain items for real-world money. She becomes a guide in ''Live Remix''.

* BribingYourWayToVictory: Sells special "Gourmet Rice Balls" that provide huge stat boosts, Crafting Material Sets for crafting items, and 100,000 Yen Pins. Aside from those, she mostly sells Extra [=CD=]s.
* CanonForeigner: She ends up becoming a guide in ''Live Remix''.
* ElegantGothicLolita: [[PinkMeansFeminine Pink version]].
* LikeIsLikeAComma: Part of her [[ValleyGirl way of speaking]].
* NonstandardCharacterDesign: She actually fits in with some of the shopkeepers with her appearance, albeit younger looking than almost all of them, but you wouldn't think that she'd be a Reaper if it weren't for the standard black wings.
* ThePollyanna: She is a Reaper, needing points to survive the game, but she cheerfully looks out for every Souls and guides them before the Reaper's Game starts, and even opens up shop to support them (though it is hinted that it's another option for getting points).
* TokenMiniMoe: Among the rest of the Reapers who are commonly around their twenties, she sure looks young.
* ValleyGirl: "I totally have, like, sooo much awesome stuff. So, like, what are you lookin' for?"
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Most of her hair is blonde, but some of the hair on her left is bluish.
