This includes the teams and characters that have appeared in the ''PrinceOfTennis'' anime, and the tropes they embodied.

Naturally, this is '''chock-full of SPOILERS.'''

[[folder:Seishun Gakuen aka Seigaku]]
Seigaku is a school which once knew glory as, 25 years ago, young Nanjiroh Echizen became its star and led a formerly mediocre team into a fearsome one. However, after Nanjiroh's graduation, the school slowly slipped back into the background, unable to make it into the Nationals until the arrival of talented young people like Kunimitsu Tezuka, Shuusuke Fuji and others. The strongest push comes from Nanjiroh's son, the also insanely talented Ryoma Echizen, whose presence finally gave Seigaku the strength to come back with a vengeance and reach Nationals, taking the Kanto Regionals by storm.

Here are the most outstanding characters in Seigaku, as well as the tropes associated with them.

!'''Echizen Ryoma'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_echizen_3201.jpg

The child of Nanjiroh Echizen (former star of Seigaku, now a somewhat [[LovableSexManiac perverted and always cheerful monk]] who [[RetiredBadass retired from tennis]] to further his child's career) and Rinko Takeuchi (a sweet-tempered, calm attorney who [[{{Tsundere}} used to be quite the tomboy]] in her younger years). Bratty, cocky, somewhat dense in anything not related to tennis, sometimes bordering on {{Jerkass}} due to some of his actions--still, he's got some kind of charm that attracts almost everyone in his surroundings. Liking him or not might depend on the canon you're watching, though.

----
Tropes associated with Ryoma:
* AllThereInTheManual: Apparently wants a Nintendo 3DS.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Ryoma's primary goal in the first part of the series was to defeat his father. Eventually, Tezuka fills this role as well.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: A rare subversion, as he plays this role to Ryoga.
* AttentionWhore
* BigDamnHeroes: Either by winning a decisive match that allows Seigaku to win the current tennis round, or by protecting his friends from [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer being bullied]].
* BigEater: Do NOT have him tag along for burgers.
* {{Bishonen}}
* BrattyHalfPint: Can be stubborn and childish... well, he's only 12, what do you expect?
* BullyHunter: He will ''not'' let someone be bullied if he can help it.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Mada mada dane.", aka "You still have lots to work on." (In one episode, he deliberately translates this into English as [[GratuitousEnglish "No, not yet; you still have a long way to go."]])
* ChasteHero: He is very ObliviousToLove, only thinks in tennis and his cat and doesn't have any tact whenever Sakuno makes something nice for him. Even lampshaded by his teammates.
* DeadpanSnarker: Delivers his more snarky words either with a straight face or a sarcastic smirk.
* GratuitousEnglish: "You have lots more to work on."
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Subverted. While characters often think he's a prodigy, he actually learned most his skills through his father's training.
* HeavySleeper: He loves taking naps, and [[NotAMorningPerson is hard to wake up up in the morning]].
* HeroicSecondWind: His shots get even faster as the match goes on. This is noted to be a result of his father's training.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Actually, he is not ''right'' handed. He switches to the left when he decides to get serious.
* InsufferableGenius: He never really gets seriously chewed out for his arrogance, probably because [[ArrogantKungFuGuy he DOES have every right to be arrogant with that level of tennis-fu]].
* InvincibleHero: Throughout the entire run, in both the anime and manga, Ryoma has lost matches to less than five people, in spite of the fact that [[DramaPreservingHandicap drama preserving handicaps]] are very frequently employed to make his matches more interesting.
* KindheartedCatLover: He shows quiet a bit of love toward his cat Karupin.
* LikeFatherLikeSon
* MouthyKid: Shown to have quite the attitude and usually provokes his opponents.
* [[NiceHat Nice Cap]]
* NotAMorningPerson: He is regularly late to practices and tournaments that take place in the early morning--or any time before 10 am.
* PowerCopying: Even before achieving [[spoiler:Muga no Kyouchi or The State of Self-Actualization]] one of Ryoma's skills was copying shots after seeing them only a few times.
* SignatureMove: 'Twist Serve'.
* TheSouthpaw.
* SugarAndIceGuy: As a consequence of his care for Karupin and, to a degree, for his friends and teammates, moreso in the anime than the manga.
* TeenGenius: Of course.
* TroubledButCute: Sakuno and Tomoka are crazy for him despite his antisocial tendencies.
* WeakButSkilled: As a freshman, his small physique means he's not the most physically powerful of the regulars. Regardless, his skill as a tennis player more than makes up for it.
* WhatTheHellHero: Some of his actions leave you ''and'' his friends all "...wut?!". A huge example comes from the anime, in which [[spoiler:he first acts apathetic about Senbatsu and then ''demands'' to play against Kevin Smith]], which upsets Tezuka to the point of actually ''slapping him in public''. Ryoma [[PrideBeforeAFall doesn't earn his forgiveness]] until he goes into PoseOfSupplication.

!'''Tezuka Kunimitsu'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_tezuka_1547.jpg

Raised in a very traditional Japanese household (having an ex-police officer as his [[EccentricMentor grandfather and role model]] pays off), Tezuka is a handsome, serious, no-nonsense leader whose biggest wish is to win the Nationals, ever since as a first-year his BunnyEarsLawyer captain made him promise to be the "Pillar Of Seigaku". He's the first one to notice Ryoma, despite his great skills, still had a long way to go, and since then he wants to shape the kid into the future leader of the team. Lots of players admire him and see him as a great rival, especially Fuji, Atobe from Hyoutei and his childhood friend Sanada from Rikkaidai. Has also the misfortune of having a chronic injury plaguing him from his first year...

-->Voiced by: Creator/RyotaroOkiayu (JP), Creator/KirkThornton (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Tezuka:

* BatmanGambit
* BigBrotherMentor: For Ryoma and Miyuki Chitose.
* TheCaptain
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Yuudan senzou ni ikou!", aka "Let's not get careless!" or "Don't let your guard down!".
* TheComicallySerious: Almost as much as [[{{Naruto}} Shino]].
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* TheCaptain
* DeadlyUpgrade: Zero-Shiki Drop Shot.
** And later on, [[spoiler:Tezuka Phantom and Zero-Shiki ''Serve''. Especially the latter.]]
* {{Determinator}}: He has ''destroyed'' his arm [[spoiler:''twice'']] because he just won't give up playing.
* GeniusBruiser: Tezuka is very intelligent, to the point of being able to correct teachers, and his rivals such as Fuji and Atobe initially assumed that he was the calculating type on the court. He is also one of the tallest on the team, second to Inui with an intimidating presence. Plus, one of his signature techniques allows him to double the power of an opponent's shot.
* HotBlooded: When it comes to tennis, this is his true personality, as Atobe noted. He, unlike Fuji, goes for the win no matter what.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Is this with Fuji, where they share many of their thoughts.
** Also with his sub-captain, Oishi, whom he confides in quite a bit.
* {{Megane}}: Looks-wise, he's more of a FourEyesZeroSoul type, but his personality is far too TeamDad-ish for that.
** ScaryShinyGlasses: Not reaching Inui point, but he still has moments.
* TheObiWan: To Ryoma: "Become Seigaku's pillar of support"
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: To ''several'' characters. He is considered ''the'' one to beat, period.
* PassingTheTorch: In the epilogue, it's revealed that Tezuka chose Kaidoh as the new captain. New Prince of Tennis it's expanded that he chose to have his U-17 match against Kaidoh to see if he will be worthy of leading the team.
* PerpetualFrowner: Rarely smiles, which is noted by the others.
* PigeonholedVoiceActor: Creator/RyotaroOkiayu is ''very'' versatile, but lately he's been voicing just too many serious guys...
* PutOnABus:
** After the Prefecture Tournament match against Hyotei, Tezuka leaves until the National Tournament.
** [[spoiler:Again in Shin Tenipuri]].
* TheRival: While many characters see him as this, he's most notable as one of Ryoma's two acknowledged rivals(the other being his father).
* SayMyName: "TEZUKAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!" by Atobe, Kite and Sanada.
* SignatureMove: 'Tezuka Zone' and 'Zero-Shiki Drop Shot'.
* StoicSpectacles
* StudentCouncilPresident: Though his Council isn't exactly absurdly powerful.
* SupportingLeader: Towards the team as a whole, and then towards pretty much everyone in the entire series.
* TeamDad
* TeenGenius
* TheStoic: Almost never smiles, gets angry, ''anything''. Lampshaded by himself, when [[spoiler:Fuji]] notes he's smiling after [[spoiler:the Seigaku wins the Nationals]] and he asks the other to keep it a secret.
** SugarAndIceGuy / WhenHeSmiles: When he ''does'' show more open feelings... wow.
* TheWorfEffect / WorfHadTheFlu: He's consistently stated to be one of the best players in the series, if not the best. Yet against both Atobe and Sanada, he injures his arm [[spoiler:which causes his losses to them]]. It's also averted since even while injured, he gives his rivals an extremely hard time.
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: A very brief one. In Shin Prince Of Tennis, [[spoiler: when Tezuka faces Yudai Yamato, his former captain (back when he was a freshman), who encourages Tezuka to free himself of the burden that has been to be Seigaku's "pillar of support". Tezuka listens Yamato, along with a little cheering from [[TheRival Atobe]], stops using his [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Tezuka Phantom]] and finally acknowledges that he no longer has to be Seigaku's pillar of support and that now he can play tennis just for the fun of it, unlocking the third door of Muga no Kyochi (which according to Ryoma's father in the OVA, is the state of truly enjoying a tennis game).]]
* YaoiGuys: One of the most popular targets for yaoi doujinshi and fanfiction in the fandom. Specially with Fuji and Atobe.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Is he ''really'' just 14 going to 15? He's been mistaken for a ''teacher''.

!'''Oishi Shuichiro'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_oishi_6554.jpg

A soft-spoken, kindhearted boy who is Tezuka's closest friend in the team alongside Fuji. He often ends up taking care of the team due to his almost motherly nature. He's also an excellent defensive player alongside the only one in Seigaku who ''specializes'' in playing doubles. His most usual partner is Eiji Kikumaru.

-->Voiced by: Creator/TakayukiKondo (JP), Creator/SamRiegel (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Oishi:
* BerserkButton: He has three. First, don't make fun of him in public. Two, don't push/ignore the limits of his authority as Vice-Captain. Three, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking don't cook things in a way that contradicts his favorite recipes.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
* BoringButPractical: Despite Eiji being the flashy one, he's the one who really leads the Golden Pair with his plans and formations.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Experiences this while Tezuka is away and he's substitute captain.
* FearOfThunder: Mentioned in one of the fanbooks.
* GreenEyes
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: He changes his haircut every year.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Kikumaru.
* InstantFanclub: Which embarrasses him A LOT.
* NumberTwo: Even though he is not among the best 3 players on the team, he is the Vice-Captain.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: During the time Momoshiro started to skip training, Oishi became more irritable, to the point of [[DisproportionateRetribution snapping at Kikumaru only because he pointed out Oishi's shirt was inside out]]. He only went back to normal and apologized to Kikumaru once Momoshiro returned to the club.
* SignatureMove: 'Moon Volley'.. Later gets 'Oishi's Territory'.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Shuichiro, Syuichiro or Syuuichiro. Which one is it? Not even the merchandising agrees.
* TheStrategist: He is the brains of any doubles pair, as he can plan all his formations to compliment Eiji's acrobatics.
** In New Prince of Tennis [[spoiler:Oishi is the one who comes up with Niou using his illusions to disrupt their opponents' Synchro]]. This grants him [[spoiler:an spot for the representatives]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome
* TeamMom
* YamatoNadeshiko: A RareMaleExample. His friends consider him a sort-of mom figure to them, he's TallDarkAndHandsome as well as THE NiceGuy, prefers to support his friends even if it brings him trouble, and [[spoiler: gives up his regular spot so Tezuka (manga) or Ryoma (anime) can play without trouble in the Nationals.]]

!'''Fuji Shuusuke'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_fuji_7087.jpg

A cheerful, slightly feminine-looking, always cool young man, Fuji is regarded as possibly the only one, apart of Ryoma, who can surpass Tezuka in terms of skill inside of Seigaku, especially for his use of counters (he has SEVERAL of those and all of them have impossibly cool names). However, he seems to play more for the thrill of the game, rather than to truly win against an opponent; it's not until later that Fuji comes to take tennis as more than a fun, exhilarating way to pass time, learning to truly love the sport. Meanwhile, he helps out his friends and companions as much as he can, with an almost perpetual smile that disappears completely if someone he cares for is in risk...

-->Voiced by: YukiKaida (JP), Adam Lawson (EN, Episodes 1–30), Creator/JohnnyYongBosch (EN, Episodes 31–50)

----
Tropes associated with Fuji:
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Do NOT piss this guy off.
** BerserkButton: The best way to upset him? Hurt either his friends or invoke his...
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Yuuta, his younger brother.
** He has a hint of this towards Ryoma when he finds out that Kirihara injured him.
* {{Bishounen}}
* BromanticFoil: To Tezuka. While Tezuka is aloof, stoic and a PerpetualFrowner, Fuji is the total oposite in personality. Both of them are {{The Ace}}s of the team, almost unbeatable, big brother figures for Ryoma and very insightful.
* [[spoiler:CantCatchUp: It was believed that he had finally surpassed Tezuka towards the end of the original series. Tezuka disproves him of the notion in the Shin Tenipuri series]].
* CounterAttack: Probably the best example of a counter puncher in the series, as all his techniques are counters.
* DudeLooksLikeALady
* ExtremeOmnivore: Eats extremely spicy food without flinching, and finds Inui's [[GargleBlaster horrendous juices]] (with the sole exception of the Aozu) more than palatable.
* EyesAlwaysShut: He is only shown with his eyes open when he gets serious or shocked.
* NiceGuy: While he can be scary at times, Fuji is always cordial and social with everyone, except for Mizuki, who he treats as the {{Unperson}}.
* RedBaron: Considered "Seigaku's Genius" as well as the second best player in the team.
* SignatureMove: 'Tsubame Gaeshi', 'Higuma Otoshi', 'Hakugei', 'Kagerou Zutsumi', 'Hecatoncheires no Monban', and 'Hoshi Hanabi'
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Spelled either Shuusuke, Syusuke or Syuusuke within the fandom.
* StepfordSmiler: He has more issues than you'd think at first sight, but rarely lets his mask fall.
* TeenGenius
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: ''Especially'' towards Tezuka, who actually acknowledges him as this and encourages him in this direction.
* WeakButSkilled: His lack of physical strength has repeatedly been remarked upon, yet he makes up for it with his incredible techniques. It's quite telling when he's one of the top three players in Seigaku.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: In the chibi episodes he's usually portrayed as a female, be it as the grandmother of the Tenipuri family or the pretty girl searching for the "Lone Gunman".
** A lot of fanart has him in women's clothing as well, such as [[http://carmenmcs.deviantart.com/art/Lady-Fujiko-chan-109771803 "Lady Fuji-ko"]] which is a non-chibi version of the "Lone Gunman" Fuji, and [[http://kyu-chanwich.deviantart.com/art/C-Tenisu-no-Sukaato-66995968 "Tennis Skirt"]] which is Fuji playing tennis... [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin in a skirt.]]

!'''Kikumaru Eiji'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_eiji_9154.jpg

The epitome of bubbly and cheery is this bouncy, cheerful, slightly spoiled boy whose abilities rely on his sharp eyes, his flexibility and his ability to jump high and quick from here to there. He may look ditzy and act like a child sometimes, but if you underestimate him, you will ''regret'' it: Not just because Eiji is very skillful, but can also have as much willpower and strength as the other players. Is often seen with his close friend Fuji or his partner Oishi, the other half of the "Golden Pair", and to whom he's fiercely devoted.

-->Voiced by: Creator/HirokiTakahashi (JP), Creator/SteveStaley (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Eiji:
* BoisterousBruiser
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Might act like a kid, but is really skilled in tennis.
* [[CatGirl Cat Boy]]: In the Chibi episodes he's portrayed as the ''cat'' of the family.
** CatSmile
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Zannen Munnen Mata Raishu!" (Too bad, see you next week!), or "Hoi hoi!".
* CharacterDevelopment: Compare the Eiji from the beginning of the Hyoutei arc to the one from the Higa matches. BIG difference.
* FragileSpeedster: He's got sharp eyes and reflexes, but the downside is his lack of stamina. [[spoiler:He later goes under TrainingFromHell to become a genuine LightningBruiser.]]
* FieryRedhead
* FirstNameBasis: People rarely call him by his surname, something very rare in Japan.
* FunPersonified: Loves attention and is always cheerful.
* [[GenkiGirl Genki Guy]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Oishi, namely.
* {{Keet}}: Cheery, cute, sometimes squealing. Still, thanks to CharacterDevelopment, he gradually loses some of the shallow traits.
* PointlessBandaid: Has one on his right cheek.
* ShipperOnDeck: Along with Momo, he ships Sakuno/Ryoma.
* SignatureMove: 'Kikumaru Beam' and 'Kikumaru Bazooka'.
* VerbalTic "-nya!"

!'''Inui Sadaharu'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_inui_2492.jpg

The tallest member of the team, as well as ''very'' eccentric. His specialty is analyzing data on the players and their techniques and using them to his advantage, as well as having an ''extremely'' powerful service. Other than that, the guy is ''extremely'' quirky, in a way that almost gets him labeled as a Strange Dude.

-->Voiced by: Creator/KenjiroTsuda (JP), Jack Bauer (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Inui:
* AffectionateNickname: Only between him and Yanagi. While he would name Inui "Doctor", Inui called Renji "Professor".
* AwesomenessByAnalysis
* BadassNormal: While the majority of the Seigaku regulars (and a good amount of characters) rely on fancy techniques and physics-defying moves, Inui relies on good ol' data, athleticism, and determination.
* BatmanGambit: ''Really'' good at these.
** XanatosSpeedChess
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled / DeathByPragmatism: Downplayed a lot (since you can basically replace "Death" with "Juice").
** In the Bowling miniarc, Inui preferred to fail his shot on purpose to take the little cup of Aozu instead of the big jug (because he was still going to be the team with the lowest score).
** Taken UpToEleven for the Beach Volley and Yakiniku miniarcs, when he also prefers to throw the challenge rather than loose. In both occations, his teammates ended up pulling down his pants by accident.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Kaidoh.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Played with in his relationship to [[spoiler:Yanagi.]]
* BlindWithoutEm: A whole episode was dedicated to people trying to see his eyes. [[spoiler:They're green.]]
* ButtMonkey: Especially in the OVA's.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Ii data".
* CantCatchUp: While he's certainly an intelligent and skilled tennis player, his Data Tennis just isn't effective enough against Tezuka, Echizen, or Fuji. Luckily, his doubles pairing with Kaido ends up being one of the more reliable Doubles Pairs.
* GargleBlaster: His infamous juices.
* GeniusBruiser: Although his Data Tennis uses mathematic calculations to predict his opponent's shots, he still trains very hard (in fact, 2.25 times harder than Kaidoh, who already trains 3 times harder than the others) to regain his place as a regular and to keep up with his teammates, and in the match with his old friend and rival, Yanagi, Inui [[spoiler:pretends to abandon his Data Tennis, temporarily resorting to a more primal-like style of tennis that relies on very strong shots.]] He also further improves his "Sonic Serve" into his "Waterfall Serve" through his hard training.
* LethalChef: His juices, and he makes them lethal on purpose (they're so caustic that even himself is determined to not getting them as penalty).
** They even have unusual ingredients including sardines, vinegar and even ''a bug''.
* OpaqueNerdGlasses
** ScaryShinyGlasses: Inui's the one with the most moments of this; typically when he's about to give a penal-tea to one of his teammates.
* PassingTheTorch: Only in the anime and the musical, Inui gives his data book to Kachiro.
* ShipperOnDeck: Another Ryo/Saku fan.
* SignatureMove: 'Waterfall Serve'.
* SugarAndIceGuy
* TeenGenius
* TheMedic: Once in a while he's seen bandaging his friends' injuries.
* TheSmartGuy
* TheStrategist

!'''Kawamura Takashi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kawamura_3156.jpg

The humble, shy son of a local Sushi chef, Kawamura only became a regular in his last year. He goes under a COMPLETE 180º flip once he's given a racquet, though, changing into a BoisterousBruiser who uses his hard-earned SuperStrength with total efficiency and confidence.

-->Voiced by: Naru Kawamoto (JP), Creator/RichardCansino (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Kawamura:
* BadassNormal
* TheBigGuy
* BoisterousBruiser: When in "Burning" mode.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "BURNING!".
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* {{Determinator}}: Mostly as Burning Taka, but he's got his moments when normal.
* TheDutifulSon: Eldest son of a sushi chef, he's expected to inherit the family restaurant someday.
* GratuitousEnglish: Whenever he picks up a racquet, he starts shouting phrases like "Burning!" or "Come On, Baby!", or other things in {{ENGRISH}}.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Believes he's TheLoad, even when people tell him that he's not.
* HotBlooded
* MightyGlacier
* NiceGuy: His default mode, unless you give him a racquet...
* SignatureMove: 'Hadokyuu' and 'Dash Hadokyuu'.
* SplitPersonality
* SuperStrength: Actually a DeconstructedTrope. He has lots of strength due to his hard work at the family restaurant but it took him ''years'' to control it, and the sempai looked down on him for that. Calling him "Homerun Guy", telling him to give up or to switch to the baseball team... It really, ''really'' didn't mix well with his borderline ShrinkingViolet personality.
* TeamChef: Well, he was raised by a sushi chef and is expected to take over Kawamura Sushi.
* UnskilledButStrong

!'''Momoshiro Takeshi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_momo_1548.jpg

The first friend that Ryoma makes in the Seigaku team, as well as a second year student. He's always cheerful and boisterous, and gets along with everyone--save for his rival in the team, Kaidoh.

-->Voiced by: Creator/MasayaOnosaka (JP), Creator/DougErholtz (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Momoshiro:
* AnimeHair
* BadassNormal
* BigEater
* BromanticFoil: To Ryoma.
* BoisterousBruiser
* CatchPhrase: DON~!
** VerbalTic: He repeats the last phrase in different conjugation, like ''"This is troublesome. Quite troublesome..."''
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: Somewhat. He's initially one of the team's two boisterous power players along with Kawamura. After his loss to Inui, he becomes much more insightful in his tennis and becomes more known as "Seigaku's Sneaky Guy".
* FunPersonified
* [[spoiler:HeroicBSOD: A brief one, after losing his regular spot to Inui. He gets better with some prodding from An Tachibana.]]
* HotBlooded
* ICanStillFight: During his match with Oshitari in OVA 8 he ''runs into a fence'' and he gets temporarily knocked unconscious, with his head bleeding.
* JackOfAllStats: Significantly capable in the areas of power, speed, technique, and mind games, but is not the best in either of these areas. Can also play both singles and doubles.
* LightningBruiser: He's damn fast and persistent, with enough power to rival Kawamura. Unlike him, he focuses on skill as well.
* PurpleEyes
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red Oni to Kaidoh's and Ryoma's Blue.
* TheRival: To Kaidoh.
* ShipperOnDeck: Ships Sakuno/Ryoma fervently, and may dabble a little in Eiji/Oishi.
* SignatureMove: 'Dunk Smash' and 'Jack Knife'.
* UnskilledButStrong: Tezuka notes that he has a great deal of potential, which he tries to bring out when they play each other.
* WifeBasherBasher: He really hates it when a girl gets threatened.

!'''Kaidoh Kaoru'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kaidou_4241.jpg

The other second year among the regulars, he's "gifted" with a massive case of FaceOfAThug. Beneath it however, is a kind person with next to nothing in social skills and a tenacious nature, as well as comical bad luck outside of the field.

----
Tropes associated with Kaidoh:
* AlliterativeName
* {{Asexuality}}
* BerserkButton: ...Did you call him a "Viper"? FSHUUUUUT THE FUCK UP!
* ButtMonkey: If something humiliating or hilarious is gonna happen to a Seigaku player, he's the first candidate.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Fshuuuuuuu".
* TheComicallySerious
* FaceOfAThug: Once you get to know him better, he can show a very tender (and hidden) side.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Kids might fear him, but animals love him (but sometimes they get scared away because of his [[FaceOfAThug face]]).
* GymBunny: He uses all his free time to train. In suplementary material it's also shown that his room has weights and gym gear.
* [[spoiler:HeroicBSOD: In the anime, during his doubles match against Rikkaidai in the Kanto Tournament, after Jackal Kuwahara returns his Boomerang Shot with a Boomerang of his own.]]
* HotBlooded: He gets annoyed very easily (most frequently courtesy of Momoshiro and Ryoma).
** [[spoiler: TheBerserker: Almost. Inui stopped him before he got into Devil-Mode like Kirihara.]]
* PerpetualFrowner
* PlotPoweredStamina
* RedOniBlueOni: His Blue Oni to Momo's Red. The Red Oni to Inui's Blue.
* TheRival: To Momo.
* SignatureMove: 'Snake Shot' and 'Boomerang Snake'.
* SssssnakeTalk
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks a lot like his father, Shibuki. His little brother Hazue, is basically a child version of Kaidoh.
* {{Tsundere}}: A textbook non-romantic example, specially towards Inui.
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have to Be Ghosts?]]

[[folder:Fudomine Chuu]]
Fudomine is the only public school among the ones featured in the early series. They're also the only team pretty much made of second-year students, with captain Kippei Tachibana as the only senior. And this is for a very, '''very''' good reason.

[[spoiler:When then second-year-student Tachibana arrived to Tokyo from Kyushuu and transferred to Fudomine, he was horrified to see that the tennis team was in very difficult predicaments: the coach was a SadistTeacher and the seniors were massive {{Jerk Ass}}es, bullying the first years relentlessly. Tachibana attempted to help the bullied juniors but was also punished with them, and in a moment of UnstoppableRage he snapped and attacked the coach. Said coach resigned and so did the older members, while Tachibana and the others were punished buy not expelled and the team was taken off the National runner-ups; the remaining members dedicated themselves to train and get ready for the next year's torunament which would also be the last ones for Tachibana as he would go to highschool.]] This explains their strong TrueCompanions bond as well as the players's UndyingLoyalty to "Tachibana-san", their coach ''and'' captain.

Here are the most outstanding characters in Fudomine, as well as the tropes associated with them.

!'''Tachibana Kippei'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_tachibana_2780.jpg

Kippei Tachibana is Fudomine's charismatic captain and coach. [[spoiler: He was the one who rebuilt the tennis team together with the younger players. During the later part of the series, it was discovered that he is 'the legendary' Tachibana Kippei who was considered one of the strongest players in Kyushuu region and is known as one of the Two Wings of Kyushuu along with best friend Chitose Senri.]]

-->Voiced by: Creator/YoshihisaKawahara (JP), Creator/DougErholtz (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Tachibana:
* BigBrotherMentor: To both his sister An and the rest of the Fudomine team.
* BloodKnight: In his backstory.
** MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:When said BloodKnight traits harm his friend Chitose [[EyeScream REAL bad]]]].
*** [[spoiler:TheAtoner]]
* TheCaptain: He is the only senior student in the team, as well as the captain ''and'' the coach.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: First, he had long hair that he dyed blond. After the incident described, he cut it short and dyed it back to black. [[spoiler:In the Nationals, he keeps his hair short... and dyes it blond again.]]
* FacialMarkings: A mole on his forehead.
* {{Foil}}: The parallel between him and Tezuka is established early on, with the two being around the same level but with Tachibana being more wild and more noticeably close with his team.
** As a whole, Fudoumine is an interesting contrast to Seigaku; their colors make them seem like the stock Opposing Sports Team, yet their backstory makes them more the underdog compared to Seigaku which has a fairly decent reputation.
* NewTransferStudent: It's revealed that he was still playing doubles with Chitose at Shishigaku when both were in 2nd year of middle school. After the accident with Chitose's eye, both changed schools, with Tachibana arriving to Fudomine in the middle of his 2nd year.
* NotSoDifferent: With Fuji. Both are older siblings who look up to them and [[BewareTheNiceOnes can be very fierce if provoked]].
* RealMenHateSugar: [[AllThereInTheManual According to one of the fanbooks]], hates sweets.
* SignatureMove: ''[[SpamAttack Abare-dama]]''.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He appears cold and secretive, but is actually a sweetheart.
* SupremeChef: [[AllThereInTheManual According to one of the fanbooks]], knows 125 recipes, and cooks dinner every night.
** Which kinda contradicts a scene in "Atobe Kara no Okurimono", in which Kamio looks kinda grossed out [[LethalChef when he sees his cooking]]. Oh, well.
* TeamDad
* TheWorfEffect After being stated to be a national-level player on par with Tezuka, [[spoiler:he loses very badly against Kirihara (although to be fair, he wasn't using his full strength as Kirihara was in full BloodKnight mode, which brought ''very'' unpleasant memories to him). He also loses to his friend Chitose, who goes on to lose to Tezuka.]] Could be considered WorfHadTheFlu.
** It could be argued that this trope applies to Fudomine as a whole. After their arc, a lot of the other rival teams are shown intially defeating Fudomine and thus proving how dangerous they are.

* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: To Tachibana's sister, An. He pretty obviously has a crush on her, but she considers their relationship as PlatonicLifePartners.

As the name says, St. Rudolph is a Catholic school. It's also a BoardingSchool, and though its tennis team has only been around for five years, it's extremely powerful and well known. Five of the regulars are transfer students; they belong to a "Reinforcement" program that emphasizes on their training regiment and provides them with flexibility on their academics. Fuji Yuuta is the younger brother of Fuji Shuusuke who constantly overshadows him. Originally a student at Seigaku, he declines to join the tennis team and is eventually scouted by Mizuki. He hits at difficult angles for left-handed players, causing him to be known as the "Lefty-Killer." He uses the Rising Shot, which hits the ball on the rise, giving the opponents less time to react. Mizuki teaches him the Twist Spin Shot, which puts a topspin on the ball, causing it to bounce upwards, [[spoiler: though it puts a heavy strain on undeveloped shoulders.]]

[[folder:Yamabuki Chuu]]
Yamabuki isn't a school of huge tennis tradition, but the last year they had reasonably good results thanks to red-headed ace Kiyosumi Sengoku and their good doubles players. Their trump card, though, is the newest addition to their line-up: The utterly rebellious and EXTREMELY skilled Jin Akutsu. Their coach, Mikiya Banda aka Banji, is known and feared/respected for his ManipulativeBastard status.

!'''Sengoku Kiyosumi'''

Sengoku Kiyosumi, also known as "Lucky Sengoku", is a third year student, and is one of the keys to Yamabuki's strategy of finishing opposing teams off quickly. He is a happy-go-lucky guy with a strong tennis sense and extremely sharp eyes able to discern fast moving balls. He is known as a National level player, and was invited to the Junior Senbatsu (Junior Selection) training camp in his second year after Tezuka declined. Despite those honors, he suffered losses to both Momoshiro in the Prefectural tournament and Kamio in the Kanto tournament. After a certain point, he throws away his old style of tennis, trains in boxing, and forms "Boxing Tennis", which focuses on the three-minute limit in a boxing round.

A very cynical person, he hates to be bossed around and punishes those who order him to do something. He is very violent, attempts to cause conflict constantly. He uses an unusual flexibility of his body to put high speeds on his shots and hit balls in unnatural positions allowing him to hit his opponents if he desires. He was trained in tennis at young age, but gave up after finding it boring, until being recruited by Mikiya Banda under the promise of being able to hurt others. [[spoiler: After hurting Ryoma and his friends at Seigaku retaliating for the fact Ryoma spoiled his conflict attempts with Ginka, he suffers his first ever loss in a match against Ryoma in the Prefectural Tournament. [[folder:Hyoutei Gakuen]]
The biggest EnsembleDarkhorse among the fandom is this private school majorly attended by kids from rich families, which offers education from kindergarten to university level. Hyotei's strength lies in its strict stratification and merit system, which prioritizes ability only rather than emotion; the tennis club has 200 members selected through very strict methods devised by the coach and music teacher Taro Sakaki. Its captain is Keigo Atobe, whose wealth, charisma and skills are only compared with the DracoInLeatherPants treatment he sometimes gets in fanfiction.

!'''Atobe Keigo'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_atobe_1525.jpg

The only son and heir to one of the richer families in Japan, Atobe lived a good part of his life in England and only returned to Japan when it was his turn to attend junior high. Narcissistic, arrogant, self-centered and loud, Atobe isn't only brawns and no brains though--he's also an excellent leader, multi-talented, as well as quite more noble than one would expect from a rich kid who seems to be just the male version of a RichBitch in his first appearance. Atobe might have a pretty face, hordes of fangirls in the story, but once you see through the facade, you can expect an ''excellent'' match and a quite noble rival.

-->Voiced by: Creator/JunichiSuwabe (JP), Creator/YuriLowenthal (EN)

----
Tropes associated with Atobe:
* TheAce: The most obvious example in the series. He's the StudentCouncilPresident, TheCaptain of the tennis club as well as its best player, is a good student who also happens to be [[RichBitch insanely rich]] and multilingual, has a horde of fangirls and his own cheering section, ''knows how to pilot an helicopter'' (in the anime, at least. In the musical he had a pilot), and is an extremely LargeHam. Atobe also [[AttentionWhore loves the limelight]].
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the games and the manga, he's a blond; but, he's purple-silver-haired in the anime.
* AttentionWhore: He ''needs'' to have big acclaim wherever he goes. He even brought Hyotei's chant recorded to the U-17 camp.
* BigFancyHouse: No doubt about that.
* BishieSparkle: One of the biggest "offenders".
* TheCaptain
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Ore-sama no bigi no yoi na!" ("Be awed at the sight of my prowess") and its variations.
* CharmPoint. His mole. There's even a song dedicated to it.
* ChildhoodFriend: With Kabaji. Their bios state they went to the same kindergarten, and even while still at Elementary School, Kabaji still followed Atobe's directions.
* FanNickname: InUniverse. Ryoma calls him "Monkey King" in when they meet.
* GorgeousGeorge: Fanfiction often flanderize him as one of these.
** Also, what he spends his allowance on? Treating out his club members.
* HyperAwareness: His biggest strenght lies in his ''"Insight"'', which allows him to spot his rival's weak spots and blindspots (''"World of Ice"'').
** Later, his "Insight" evolves into "Atobe Kingdom", which literally allows him to see in XRayVision.
* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler:In the anime, he grabs the shaving machine from Ryoma and cuts his own hair, like they bet. In the manga, however, [[{{Jerkass}} Ryoma shaved him while he was still unconscious]].]]
** In ''The New Prince of Tennis,'' he's intent on following through on his promise to [[spoiler:Tezuka]] to carry the load as TheLeader of the middle schoolers.
* IHaveYouNowMyPretty: He was sorta doing this to An in his first appearance.
* IdleRich: He is insanely rich (to the point of arriving on private jet ''and'' parachute to school), and is often confused by the middle-class lifestyle (In Oshitari's section of the fanbook, he expressed confusion at why people has to do mundane chores without a servant).
* [[spoiler:ImportantHaircut: After losing to Ryoma in the Nationals. Subverted because he's later shown using a wig.]]
* InsufferableGenius
* ItsAllAboutMe: He directs and does an entire show before entering the court, with all the Hyotei school cheering his name. He even brought the Hyotei chant recorded and had it played at the U-17 training camp.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: So much. The biggest example is "Atobe Kara no Okurimono", in which he organizes a whole festival to [[spoiler:cheer up Kabaji after his beloved older sister gets engaged.]]

** In ''The New Prince of Tennis'', he volunteers to take on this role for all the middle schoolers after [[spoiler:Tezuka leaves the U-17 camp]].
* {{Omniglot}}: He knows how to speak English, German, Latin and Greek.
* PassingTheTorch: It's been stated that Hiyoshi will be the new Hyotei captain. In New Prince of Tennis, just like Tezuka played against Kaidoh as a rite, Atobe also did the same with Hiyoshi at the U-17 camp.
* PetTheDog: There's no doubt that he's a MagnificentBastard, but has shown a soft spot for his companion Kabaji and supported Shishido's plight without hesitation or second thoughts. And after he defeats Tezuka, he acknowledges his determination and instead of lifting his hand to celebrate, he takes Tezuka's hand and they both lift their clasped hands together.
* PrincelyYoungMan: Undoubtedly this, but he's far and away more of a LargeHam than PrinceCharming and SpoiledBrat combined.
* TheRival: Of all the players outside Seigaku, he is this to Tezuka.
* SignatureMove: 'Hametsu e no Rondo', 'Tannhauser Serve' and 'Koori no Sekai' in the original series. 'Atobe Kingdom' in the new series.

He is initially dropped from the regulars after being humiliated 6–0 by Kippei Tachibana, but he soon cuts his precious long hair and, with some help from Atobe, makes a return to the team.

!'''Akutagawa Jiroh'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_jiro_1875.jpg

Jiroh is called the "magic volleyer" of Hyoutei Academy. His play style, which focuses on returning balls directly from the net using his very flexible wrists, is inspired by Rikkai's Marui Bunta, who defeated him in a match two years earlier. He constantly sleeps, and he is very excitable.

-->Voiced by: Creator/YujiUeda (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Jiroh:
* AdaptationDyeJob: Blond in the manga, but a honey brown in the anime.
** CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In the anime.
* BrilliantButLazy: Even thought he skips morning training and naps in the middle of club activities, Jiroh still keeps his spot in the regulars because of his volley skills.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Even though he always looks sleepy, he has the distinction of defeating Fuji Yuuta in only 15 minutes.
* ChildhoodFriends: He has been this with Gakuto and Shishido since Elementary School.
* FanBoy: Towards Fuji and Bunta.

** Whenever the opponent gets a point from him, instead of getting upset he starts to {{Squee}}.
* {{Sleepyhead}}
** HeavySleeper
* StalkerWithACrush: It's stated that once Jiroh stalked Marui and got one of his wristbands as souvenir. Also one of his customs after school is to commute to Rikkaidai and watch Marui practice.

!'''Kabaji Munehiro'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kabaji_8593.jpg

Kabaji is Atobe's faithful follower. But despite his appearance Kabaji is also a very powerful player. His simplemindedness proves to be to his advantage because he can imitate his opponent's play style by just observing them. However, the techniques often are too much for him to use, which can lead him to strain his body. Kabaji rarely talks, and he is often heard saying "usu" ("yes" or "yup") to Atobe.

-->Voiced by: Satoshi Tsuruoka (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kabaji:
* BigBrotherInstinct: He adores his older sister, and was very distraught when she got engaged.
* BigEater
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Usu!"
* ChildhoodFriend: With Atobe. Their bios state they went to the same kindergarten, and even while still at Elementary School, Kabaji still followed Atobe's directions.
* DittoFighter: Capable of copying the moves of nearly any opponent he faces, but does not keep them. The only thing constant seems to be his sheer power.
* TheDragon: Easily one of the most formidable players on the team (possibly second to Atobe), he's often posed one of the biggest challenges to Seigaku to the point of matching Tezuka.
* GentleGiant: As kind and humble as he's strong.
* [[spoiler:ImportantHaircut: Since Atobe had to fulfill his bet with Ryoma, Kabaji willingly cut his hair as well to acompany him until it grows out again. Even though Atobe uses extensions...]]
* TheQuietOne: He rarely talks aside from nodding to Atobe with an "Usu". When he does talk, it's short and to the point.
** The longest line he has is in the "Atobe Kara no Okurimono" special, where he thanks him for doing a lot to cheer him up.
** Another notable moment where he talks more than usual is in the Pair Puri, as he handled Ohtori a water bottle and said some friendly words when he noticed Ohtori was upset.
* RealMenWearPink: The fanbooks say that he loves knitting and his favorite school subject is Home Economics.
* {{Sidekick}}: To Atobe. He is mainly his personal assistant.
* SkilledButNaive: Even though he's capable of copying extremely complex moves, he often lacks the experience to utilize them in certain situations (such as using Tezuka's Pinnacle of Hard Work in the rain), [[FatalFlaw which proves to be his undoing.]]
* TheStoic: He is always deadpan and servile.
** NotSoStoic: Even though he never makes other facial expression, he is highly sensitive and takes action, especially regarding Atobe.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Atobe. [[spoiler:His impulse to protect Atobe from a threatening shot in the middle of a game gets him expelled from the U-17 camp.]]
* YesMan: Subverted. He nods at any of Atobe's orders out of pure loyalty.

!'''Ohtori Choutarou'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_ohtori_1955.jpg

Ohtori Choutarou is Shishido Ryou's doubles partner and close friend. He helps Shishido get back on the team, which makes the two very close. Chotaro has a very fast serve called the Scud Serve, which can go up to 200 km/h, though it is limited in accuracy until he masters it. He later renames it the Neo Scud Serve, which goes up to 215 km/h.

-->Voiced by: Creator/DaisukeNamikawa (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Ohtori:

* {{Catchphrase}}: "Ikkyunyukon!"
* ChildhoodFriends: He is seen to be this with Hiyoshi since elementary school.
* GentleGiant: He's the second tallest player of Hyoutei Gakuen but his daily activities include [[FriendtoallLivingThings going to the gardens to feed the birds.]] Also his worst subject at school is "Experiments with living things".

!'''Hiyoshi Wakashi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_hiyoshi_201.jpg

Hiyoshi Wakashi is the latest addition to the regular team. Despite being a sophomore, Hiyoshi is a very promising player, and has been confirmed by Atobe to be the next captain of Hyoutei after he graduates. He uses an unorthodox style of tennis he dubs Enbu Tennis, which combines martial arts with standard tennis.

-->Voiced by: MasamiIwasaki (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Hiyoshi:
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: His catchphrase means "Surpass the one on top", which he firmly believes if he wants to be worthy of Atobe's seat as Team Captain.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy
* BadassBookworm: His bio states he spends his allowance on books. And he also practices martial arts.
* ButtMonkey
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Gekokujou!", which he says every time he encounters a new challenge.
* ChildhoodFriends: He is seen to be this with Ohtori since elementary school.
* [[spoiler:CryCute]]
* HeirTotheDojo: Comes from a martial arts-centered clan. His ending in ''Gakuensai no Oujisama'' game has him actually inviting the lead girl, now his girlfriend, to the dojo so she watch him practice and then meet his family.
* KungFuKid: He bases his tennis style on martial arts.
* {{Megane}}: Though wears contact lenses when he's not at home.
* OddCouple: For the Nationals, he gets paired with Gakuto, who also serves as a {{Foil}} too. Both are very skilled tennis players that base their styles in other skills (Hiyoshi uses his martial arts and Gakuto has a very high jump and flexibility) and both have short endurance in long games. While Hiyoshi is calm and quiet, Gakuto is loud and boisterous. This even gets lampshaded when both of them are planning their game strategy... ''in a date spot cafe''.
* SchoolNewspaperNewsHound: Part of the school newspaper committee. He also seems to always be on the look out for strange phenomena such as UFO's.

!'''Taki Haginosuke'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_taki_8955.jpg
Taki was a regular on Hyoutei's tennis team until he lost horribly to Shishido Ryou and was replaced by Hiyoshi Wakashi. He was a former doubles partner from Ohtori Choutarou.
-->Voiced by: Kohei Kiyasu (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Taki:
* CatchPhrase: "Yaru ne".
* DemotedToExtra <---> AscendedExtra: He appears along the Hyotei regulars at the street courts. Later he looses his spot against Shishido and isn't seen again until the Nationals, where his only role is to hold a machine and tell the speed of the balls (how fast are Inui's Waterfall and Ohtori's Scud Serve). In the anime, his role is expanded when Taki tries to offer himself to cut his hair instead of Atobe.
** Also played with in the Musicals. In the 1st Season, Taki is only mentioned and/or alluded to been replaced by Shishido, while in the 2nd Season, Taki is included in the Hyotei cast with song parts.
** The All-Stars Hyotei characters album features Taki having a song for himself for the first time.
* ImportantHaircut: Invoked. [[spoiler:In the anime, when Ryoma is going to cut Atobe's hair to fill in their bet, Taki tries to stop him and offers to have his own beautiful hair cut instead. Ryoma looks like he's considering the offer, but then Atobe grabs the electric razor and cuts his own hair instead.]]
* LudicrousPrecision: His special skill is measuring time and he's able to stop the stopwatch at exactly one minute.
* SacrificialLamb: He has to sacrifice his regular spot as he lost to Shishido.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jousei Shonan]]
This team from Kanagawa is only mentioned in the manga, but it becomes a group of {{Ascended Extra}}s in the anime, even though the team members are all {{Canon Foreigner}}s. In a sense, they're an Expy of Hyotei, with arrogance, players with similar play-styles, etc. There's a big difference, however: Their eccentric and beautiful coach, Aoi Hanamura, has a borderline scientific approach to tennis, and thus she gives her pupils very personalized training regimes.

!'''Kajimoto Takahisa'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kajimoto_866.jpg

Kajimoto Takahisa is the serious and soft-spoken captain. His flexibility is used in his serve, the L-drive Serve, where he bends his entire body back and releases it like a catapult.

-->Voiced by: Creator/KatsuyukiKonishi (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kajimoto:
* {{Bishonen}}
* TheCaptain
* CanonForeigner
* PerpetualFrowner
* RubberMan: To a degree, as he's almost ''unnaturally'' flexible.
* TheStoic: He rarely has any other emotions.

!'''Shinjo Reiji'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_shinjou_4590.jpg
Shinjo Reiji is known as Hanamura's greatest "masterpiece", with his techniques involving very powerful shots known as Mirage. The powerful shots are indistinguishable from a regular return or serve, leaving opponents confused. Another technique he has is the Deep Impulse, which is a powerful shot that also can be used as a serve that will injure the opponent, and consecutive attempts to return the Deep Impulse may injure the player to the point of unable to play tennis anymore.

-->Voiced by: Ryuji Kasahara (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Shinjo:

* BerserkButton: Insulting Hanamura's training method.
* CanonForeigner
* HotForTeacher: His ''huge'' apparent crush on Hanamura is played for laughs.
* SugarAndIcePersonality
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse / AdaptedOut: In the [=OVAs=] of the National Tournament, Reiji is absent from [[TheBusCameBack the group of all the people who had played against Ryoma]] so he can recover his memory. It could be excused if not for the fact that Aoi Kentarou (who didn't play against Ryoma in the manga, [[AscendedExtra but did so in the anime]]) was also added in this version.

!'''Wakato Hiroshi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_wakato_7572.jpg
Wakato Hiroshi is the vice-captain, who can copy any famous professional tennis player's playing style using his Change Over technique, even copying their smallest habits. With this move, he can change his play style easily and when his opponent finally gets used to his style, he changes over again. Though he passes it off as just copying, he spends countless hours practicing. He is very popular, even having his own fanclub, which follows him to his official matches.

Tanaka Yohei plays doubles with his younger, twin brother, Kohei Tanaka. He is often mistaken for a girl due to his short, dark pink hair. Kouhei is often in the same situation due to his long blue hair. He has very good hearing, which, together with his brother's good eyesight, allows them to predict their opponents moves.

[[folder:Rokkaku Chuu]]
Rokkaku Chuu is a school from Chiba, known as "The Veterans from Chiba" since they have qualified for 35 years straight to the Nationals. The team's regular line-up consists of players who learned the sport when they were kids and have been using wooden racquets tailored by their advisor ever since. Said advisor, Ojii, has been the coach even from ''before'' Nanjiro Echizen was the star from Seigaku.

!'''Aoi Kentarou'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_aoi_5701.jpg

Aoi Kentarou is the jolly, talkative and energetic captain of Rokkaku tennis team. What makes him stand out is that he is only a freshman, and some teams are doubtful of his capabilities as a team captain. However, despite being a rookie, Aoi is a high-caliber player, who were able to match up with Kaidou Kaoru (manga) and Echizen Ryoma (anime).

-->Voiced by: Creator/ToshiyukiToyonaga (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Aoi:

* AscendedExtra: In the manga, Kentarou plays against Kaidoh, while Ryoma is away watching Kirihara's game. In the anime, however, he gets to be Ryoma's other rival and ''they actually play against each other''. Because of this change in the anime, he is also included in the [=OVAs=] to play against the amnesiac Ryoma (In the manga, the only two schools that didn't have any input in recovering Ryoma's memory were Rokkaku and Midoriyama).
* BoisterousBruiser
* ButtMonkey: In the Anime only, since Shudou is AdaptedOut for the Volley and Yakiniku miniarcs.
* TheCaptain: He was picked by the coach (if it was coincidence or a deliberate choice is still a mystery), instead of the more mature and reliable Saeki. The team, however, is fine with this anyway.
* CasanovaWannabe: He wants to attract as many girls as Saeki and Sengoku together, while Koharu tells him it won't work if he is that desperated.
* CompositeCharacter: He ends up getting Shudou's fate in the gag-miniarcs (In the manga, Shudou is the first victim of Inui's juices, while Kentarou is the one still in competition).
* GenkiGuy
* {{Foil}}: It's even more pronounced in the anime, as he is very much like Kintaro towards Ryoma. They both are first years with a regular spot.
* FunPersonified
* LargeHam

!'''Saeki Koujirou'''

-->Voiced by: Yusei Oda and Katsuaki Arima (JP)

Tropes associated with Saeki:

* AdaptationDyeJob: While in the manga he has honey-brown hair, in the anime his hair is grey on the top and black near the nape.

* ChickMagnet: He is a natural and girls are attracted to him even when he's not trying at all.
* ChildhoodFriends: To the Fuji brothers.
* NiceGuy: Part of his natural charm, as he is generous and friendly to everyone.
* NumberTwo: Although he is more mature and has better leadership skills, he still is chosen by the coach as Vice-Captain, while Kentarou (a first year) is made Captain. Not that Saeki minds, though.
* TeamMom

!'''Amane "Davide" Hikaru'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_amane_5632.jpg

Amane Hikaru is well-known for single-handedly beating Hyoutei Gakuen's pre-regular players during a practice match. It is no doubt that he is one of the strongest players in the team, despite being a sophomore. While he is very serious on court, he still tends to crack puns in between hits. When he is off court makes even more lame puns and jokes.

-->Voiced by: Kosuke Takeuchi (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Amane:

* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: As the ''bokke''.
* HurricaneOfPuns: [[AllThereInTheManual The 40.5 fanbook]] says that he makes 20 puns every morning when he wakes up, almost 80 ''in a single day'' or one every 12 minutes. Accordingly, he makes a whopping grand total of ''28,775 puns in a year.''

Tropes associated with Ryou:

[[folder:Rikkaidai Fuzoku Chuu]]
Rikkai Daigaku Fuzoku, better known as ''Rikkai'' or ''Rikkaidai'', is considered to be the best middle school tennis team, having won the Kanto Tournament for 15 years straight and the Japanese National Tournament for the last two years. They aim for perfect wins in the matches and attempt to win for the third year in a row, and to reach said goal they subject themselves to a borderline militaristic discipline as well as TrainingFromHell. The three leaders are Captain Yukimura, Vice-Captain Sanada, and Treasurer Yanagi and together, they're known as "The Three Demons". However, there's an unexpected factor to consider: Yukimura's health has taken a sudden nosedive, therefore there's extra pressure on them this time...

!'''Yukimura Seiichi'''

Yukimura Seiichi is the captain of Rikkaidai. He is called "The Child of God" due to his strength on the tennis court. Despite his strength, he has a very frail and feminine appearance, and he is very friendly to others outside of the court. However, he is very strict with his team when he is acting as their Captain, and while he is playing, he refuses to lose. [[spoiler: However, in the final of the National Tournament, he is defeated by Echizen Ryoma after activating the last door of the Muga no Kyouchi/State of Self-Actualization.]] He is hospitalized for much of the series due a neurological disease, which leaves him with a fifty percent rate of living, but undergoes a successful surgery and rehabilitation during the Kanto Tournament and was able to participate in the National Tournament.

-->Voiced by: Sachiko Nagai (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Yukimura:
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He seems rather friendly off-court and popular with the ladies. He only shows his scary side when playing tennis.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Fuji and Shiraishi. * RedBaron: even nicknamed "Child of God".
* SilkHidingSteel: Don't let his appearance fool you. He is delicate looking, is very fond of plants and gardening, speaks with a soft voice and is an IllBoy, but he's also the best player of the Tennis Champions Rikkaidai.
* StepfordSmiler: According to his stats, with his smiling poker face, the opponent can never read his expressions. Because he has quite the skills to back it up, his Mental strength is strong.

* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: [[spoiler:His winning obsession is what makes him loose against Ryoma, who just discovered the Teni Muhō no Kiwami: Having fun with Tennis. Yukimura is incapable of understanding this as his only drive in life is victory.]]
* YamatoNadeshiko: Genderflipped. He ''looks'' and acts the part eerily well with his long-ish and wavy black hair, pale skin, polite speech patterns (complete with [[CrossDressingVoices his soft voice]]) and gentle off-courts behavior... and then he shows the SilkHidingSteel part upon becoming a {{Determinator}} MagnificentBastard in regards to tennis. Sanada Genichirou is the vice captain of Rikkaidai, known as the "Emperor", who fills for Yukimura in Singles 1 during his hospitalization. He comes from a very traditional family, is stern and noble, plays with honor, and expects the best from himself and his teammates. When his teammates don't live up to his expectations, or act in a way that brings shame to their team, Sanada will hit them. Sanada practices kendo and combines it with his tennis techniques. * CorporalPunishment: In the manga he slaps his companions around, instead of assigning laps or lectures. So far he has slapped Jackal, Marui and Kirihara for different transgressions, and tried to slap Yanagi but Kirihara stood up for him.
* EyePatchOfPower: In New Prince of Tennis he returns to camp with this, paired with his TookALevelInBadass from his TrainingFromHell.
* GenerationXerox: His grandfather is exactly like him, and he ''also'' happens to be TheRival to Tezuka's grandfather (both react by screaming [[LargeHam "Tezukaaaa!!"]] with only hearing the name).
* HeirToTheDojo: Of a famous ''kendo'' one. His endings in the dating sims often involve bringing the lead female to the Sanada dojo.
* HitMeDammit: [[spoiler:Since he also lost against Ryoma, Sanada wanted to get a bigger penalty to honor his broken promise to Yukimura of defending their champion title.]]
** In New Prince of Tennis, it happens when Sanada accidentally hits Akutsu with his racquet. Sanada not only apologized with embarrasment, but also requested for a slap from him. In response, Akutsu [[spoiler:kicks him in the stomach, to Sanada's surprise]].
* HonorBeforeReason: While he could have [[spoiler:let Yukimura win by forfeit against an amnesiac Ryoma at the Nationals, he also decided to help him to recover his memory, reminding Yukimura that they have to win "The Rikkaidai way".]]
* KendoTeamCaptain: Subverted. He has the looks, attitude ''and'' skills, but prefers tennis rather than kendo.
* TheKirk: He is tough and more HotBlooded in the FreudianTrio with Yukimura and Yanagi.
* LargeHam: "Yukimuraaaaaaa!!" (both in the Anime Chibi Omakes and the Musicals)
* [[NiceHat Nice Black Cap]]
* NotSoStoic: Tries to be TheStoic, but is far too HotBlooded.
* NumberTwo: He is the vice-captain of the team and Yukimura's right hand.
* OddCouple: Or more accurately "Odd Doubles Partnership". Happens twice:
** In the anime filler, Sanada is paired with Atobe. Not only their personalities contrast (he is TheStoic, disciplined and strict, while Atobe is a diva with AwesomeEgo), but get along well at the court because both of them went to the same tango concert.
** In New Prince of Tennis, Sanada purposely requested to play doubles with Akutsu, since their personalities and play styles were complete oposites (While Sanada has a lot of techniques and calculates all his moves, Akutsu ''is more HotBlooded than him'' and his tennis is very instinctive and umpredictably violent).
* OlderThanTheyLook
* RescueRomance: In both dating sims. In ''Gakuensai'', he rescues Shizuka from thugs trying to make moves on her. In ''Sanroku'' he and Tsugumi almost fall off a cliff and he actually manages to ''[[SuperStrength throw her upwards in the air to a safer spot above them before climbing his way up]]''. ''[[CrowningMomentOfAwesome With one arm]]''.
* TheRival: To Tezuka since both of them were kids. [[GenerationXerox Also their grandfathers seem to be this as well]].
* SignatureMove: 'Fuu Rin Ka Zan'.
* TookALevelInKindness: Since the anime doesn't have his penchant of slapping people, he comes off as less arrogant but still serious. He also seems to care more for his teammates rather than punishing them for losing.
** Played straight in the manga. For the National Tournament, he [[HitMeDammit requests slaps from his teammates for losing his game against Ryoma]], and after Rikkai lands in 2nd place, he is not punishing the losers ''(and that would imply hitting Yukimura as well)''. In New Prince of Tennnis, his nicer side is seen when he becomes a BigBrotherMentor to Kintaro and his interactions with Akutsu (see HitMeDammit above).
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Yukimura. ''[[{{Bromance}} In a whole other level]]''.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Actually 15 years old, he's been mistaken for a teacher in the Gakuensai dating sim game. [[RightBehindMe And he was right behind the main girl when she said so]].

!'''Yanagi Renji'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_yanagi_45.jpg

Yanagi Renji is known as the Data Master. Yanagi usually plays in singles, but sometimes in doubles. He is the friend and former doubles partner of Sadaharu Inui, having been known as the "Professor." He keeps his eyes perpetually half-closed just as Inui hides his eyes behind his thick glasses. He is Inui's rival in using Data Tennis, having taught Inui in the first place.

-->Voiced by: Creator/EijiTakemoto (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Yanagi:
* AffectionateNickname: Only between him and Inui. While he would name Inui "Doctor", Inui called Renji "Professor".
* BadassBookworm: He enjoys reading and is the 3rd best of the tennis team.
* BigBrotherMentor: He, Sanada, and Yukimura are this to Kirihara, but he fills in the most. [[spoiler: To the point of willingly giving up his spot in ''Shin Tenipuri'' to make sure Kirihara will be able to continue.]]
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Inui. Both of them collect data and base their games in strategy and hard training. While Inui uses a lot of science and maths, Renji is more inclined to literature. After rekindling their friendship, both Inui and Renji start developing horrible juices together to feed to their teammates. According to the books, their joint work has made the final products ''twice as horrible''.
* ChildhoodFriends: Him and Inui. In {{fanon}}, he's often made into Inui's UnluckyChildhoodFriend.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: His bob was longer when he was younger.
* EyesAlwaysShut
* FinishingEachothersSentences: What sets him apart from Inui is that Renji is capable of guessing correctly what his opponent is about to say.
* FirstNameBasis: With Inui. Also with Sanada and Yukimura.
* JerkassFacade: Especially in the manga.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: To Inui.
* NotSoStoic: [[spoiler:In the OVA, when Inui is injured by Kirihara and ''refusing'' to forfeit, his mask cracks and he ''begs'' Inui to do so for his own sake. "''Please'' forfeit, Sadaharu! It's not like I'm enjoying this!"]]
* TheSpock: He is deadpan, calmer and completely rational in the FreudianTrio with Sanada and Yukimura.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Especially in the anime.

!'''Kirihara Akaya'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kirihara_5233.jpg

Kirihara Akaya is the youngest and only second year student in the Rikkaidai line-up, thus earning him the title "Second Year Ace." He joined Rikkai because he heard the school had a very strong tennis team, but his hopes were quickly crushed by the Three Demons. He usually acts childish and friendly, though he is actually very violent on the court, often causing serious injuries that require hospitalization. He reforms in the anime after being beaten by Fuji, (though he retains his nature in the manga) but in the nationals, he returns to his violent playing style, severely injuring Inui. While under high pressure or after sustaining injury, the whites of his eyes turn red, becoming bloodshot, and his power, skill, and speed increase. He becomes much more violent while in this state. Later, he develops a Devil Mode, which turns his skin red and his hair white. His bloodlust and destructive power are greatly enhanced, and he solely focuses on crushing the opposing players using violent means.

-->Voiced by: ShowtaroMorikubo (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kirihara:
* AllThereInTheManual: In one of the fanbooks he wants a Wii U.
* AxCrazy: His Devil Mode.
** SlasherSmile: Ditto.
* TheBerserker: When he enters the "Bloodshot Eyes" mode.
* BrattyHalfPint: Despite being already 13 years old.
* BloodKnight
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Tsubusu yo" (I'll crush you), and "I'll defeat the three demons and become Number 1!"
** "I'll dye/paint you red!" ''(EvilLaugh)''
* CantCatchUp: Though widely considered to be the Ace of the team, he still holds insecurities about being unable to defeat "The Three Demons".
* CharacterExaggeration: His BloodKnight tendences get exaggerated to ridiculous degrees in the manga. [[spoiler:Made even worse in the anime, where he actually ''was'' given CharacterDevelopment and sought to ''not'' fall into this... but the AesopAmnesia kicked in and that was lost.]]
* ColorMotif: Kirihara's main motif is Red, since he is often associated with a demon. His style is violent and bloody, his eyes turn red whenever he gets upset, Rikkai's original uniform was red (until it was recolored to yellow for the next chapters). As a side note, his favorite color is also red and he enjoys fighting videogames (the more gory, the better).
** MeaningfulName: His given name "Akaya" has the kanji for "Red".
* [[spoiler:CryCute: In the anime.]]
* EarlyBirdCameo: Only in the anime filler episode, where he sleeps on the bus to his school and ends up in Seigaku, causing havoc at the tennis club.
* EvilCounterpart: To Ryoma, though not explicitly stated. They're both the young, childish, arrogant aces of their teams with exceptional skills. While Ryoma may aim for people with his Twist Serve and Drive A, this is a key part of Kirihara's play style. Ryoma's been trained from a young age, while Akaya's a prodigy.
* GreenEyes
** RedEyesTakeWarning
* HeavySleeper: He once fell asleep on the bus while on his way to school... and crossed all the way from Kanagawa to Tokyo. In his ''Sanroku no Mystic'' route he actually falls aleep on Tsugumi more than once.
* ICanStillFight: In the anime, during his match with Kevin Smith he injures his shoulder by colliding with the net pole. [[spoiler:After carrying on for so long, he's forced to forfeit the match as the pain becomes too unbearable to bear.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: His violent and cocky behavior in courts contrasts with his child-like naivete.
* SignatureMove: 'Knuckle Serve'.
* {{Tykebomb}}: Rikkai actually encourages his Devil Mode to win matches (the Nagoya Seitoku match being a prime example). It's not until ''The New Prince of Tennis'' that Renji [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone believes it's detrimental to his health]].
* YesVirginia: According to the fanbooks, he still believes in Santa Claus.

!'''Yagyuu Hiroshi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_yagyuu_243.jpg

Yagyuu Hiroshi is known as "The Gentleman" for his polite demeanor. He is a very tenacious player, because despite of his calm and composed appearance, lies a strong desire to win at any game.

-->Voiced by: Eisuke Tsuda (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Yagyuu:

* AdaptationDyeJob[=/=]AnimeHair: In the anime, it's purple. In the manga and video games, it's [[BrainyBrunette brown.]]
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime adds that Yagyuu used to be in the Golf Club, until Niou dragged him into playing tennis.
* BadassBookworm
* BewareTheQuietOnes: While he is polite and stoic, Yagyuu has also proven many times he can be as devious as Niou.
** [[spoiler:He could pull a great impersonation of both Niou and Kaidoh and fool everyone]].
** To provoke Akaya and get him into [[TheBerserker Devil Mode]], he purposely made Akaya think that his oponent insulted him in english by calling him "The Stupid Seaweed Head".
* {{Catchphrase}}: 'Adieu'.
* FamilyHonor: Towards his team. He helps Kaidoh in a match against some {{jerkass}}es because they were badmouthing Yukimura's condition and Kaidoh beated them up for the comments.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Has the looks, but [[NiceGuy isn't a bad person]] outside the fields.
** ScaryShinyGlasses: Again, not as much as Inui, though that might be because he isn't featured as much as Inui is to begin with.
* GenreSavvy: He [[BlatantLies on purpose translated Liliadent's taunt, adding a "The Seaweed Idiot"]], so [[HotBlooded Kirihara]] would snap into [[BloodKnight Devil Mode]].
* [[spoiler:MasterOfDisguise]]: He can [[spoiler:pass himself off as Niou ''and'' Kaidou]]
* OddCouple: With Niou.
* OutOfFocus: During the Final Tournament, he is benched, so he isn't seen playing again until New Prince of Tennis, where he defeats Niou ''off-screen''. After that he is DemotedToExtra for the rest of the series.
* SignatureMove: FrickinLaserBeams. In the anime, [[AdaptationExpansion it's explained that it originated as "Golf Laser Beam"]].
* [[spoiler: TheSouthpaw: When impersonating Niou, who is left-handed. His Laser Beam is said to be weaker this way]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Purple Hair]]

!'''Niou Masaharu'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_niou_3716.jpg

Niou Masaharu known as "The Trickster", is able to completely copy the techniques and play style of other players creating the illusion his opponent is facing another person. It isn't perfect, as there are moves that he cannot copy and he is limited by his own physical abilities. He often copies his doubles partner, Yagyuu, to confuse their opponents. He can predict the moves of his opponents up to ten steps ahead.

-->Voiced by: Yuuki Matsuda (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Niou:
* BeautyMark: Has one under the right side of his mouth.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Puri."
* DittoFighter: Of the Tsungxpert kind. He can emulate Shiraishi's Bible and Tezuka's Zeroshiki Dropshot and Phantom at will.
** By New Prince of Tennis, he is capable of performing the Synchro technique with Oishi by "transforming" into Eiji, [[spoiler:and ''also'' he transformed into their oponents to disrupt their Synchro and turn the game in their favor]]. He also [[spoiler:is now able to copy the rest of Tezuka's techniques]], ''and also'' [[spoiler:can transform into Atobe so he can ''synchro with himself'']].
* EmpathicShapeshifter: He can easily adapt to any of his Illusions.
** WordOfGod says that whenever he impersonates Yukimura, Niou gets the Yips.
** During his doubles match with [[spoiler:Atobe, Niou also copies Tezuka's determination, which made him push himself harder despite being at his limit]].
* HyperAwareness: Niou has great observation skills, which allows him to exactly replicate any opponent by using his Illusion technique. [[spoiler:He could also analyze Mori and Ochi while unable to play, so he could do the Synchro with Atobe and give him all their weak spots.]]
* MasterOfDisguise ''and'' MasterOfIllusion.
* NotTooDeadToSaveTheDay: In the sequel, the match looks like it's all over when [[spoiler:Atobe can't make it in time to return the cord ball Mori hits, but Niou makes the last second game winning shot by returning the ball while still lying on his stomach.]]
--> '''Niou:''' This is...doubles...after...all.

* TheSouthpaw: When [[spoiler: impersonating Yagyuu, who is right-handed]].
** Also when he [[spoiler:made his illusions of Tezuka (left-handed) and Shiraishi (right-handed) in the game against Fuji.]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Twice:
** For the National Tournament, he revealed that he could easily [[spoiler:transform into Tezuka ''and'' Shiraishi. Too bad Fuji saw right through him]].
** Played straight in New Prince of Tennis. After [[spoiler:Yagyuu defeats him and he gets eliminated along half of the middleschoolers, they get a TrainingFromHell from Mifune. After his return, not only he perfected his illusions, but also adquired the abbility to perform Synchro with ''anyone'' he plays doubles with]].
* {{Trickster}}: According to the fanbooks, he is into practical jokes.

!'''Marui Bunta'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_bunta_6057.jpg

Marui Bunta is a volley specialist and plays doubles with his friend Jackal Kuwahara. Despite wearing arm weights during matches, he has stamina issues, so he overdoses on sugar by always eating cake before matches and chewing gum, even when he plays tennis. Jiroh Akutagawa of Hyoutei idolizes Marui and bases his style off of Marui's style, following a game they played in the Newcomers Tournament when they were both first years.

-->Voiced by: NaozumiTakahashi (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Marui:
* BigEater: He [[AllThereInTheManual eats an entire cake]] before matches. He eats a lot in general, though, not just sweets.
** GeniusSweetTooth: Usually seen eating candies or cakes.
* BubblegumPopping: He is often chewing gum during plays, replacing it everytime it starts to loose flavor.
* CatchPhrase: ''"Dou, tensai teki?"'' [[labelnote:translation]]"How's that for genius?"[[/labelnote]]
-->'''Marui:''' "It'll be done. [[CueCardPause ...By Jackal!]]"
* CrisisMakesPerfect: In the sequel series, he uses his Perfect Fortress/Wonder Castle technique to full effect when he's betrayed by [[spoiler:Kite]] during their doubles match. Prior to this, it was still imperfect.
* [[spoiler:EyeScream]]: In ''The New Prince of Tennis'', [[spoiler:Tohno, in accidentally-on-purpose fashion, throws his racquet at Marui, hitting him in the right eye.]]
* DoYouTrustMe: Inverted. In the sequel, Marui asks [[spoiler:Kite]] if he can trust him after the latter [[spoiler:had apparently betrayed him, before ultimately canceling the agreement Kite had with their opponent.]]
* FieryRedhead
* HeroicSpirit: In ''The New Prince of Tennis''. After being betrayed by his doubles partner and getting smacked by tennis balls from both in front of and behind him, he refuses to give up and brings out his new defensive volley technique -- which was, [[CrisisMakesPerfect until then, yet to be perfected]] -- to return every single ball on his own and not let a single one get behind him. For someone who's usually rather easygoing, Marui's [[FieryRedhead hair color]] isn't just for show, apparently.
* InsufferableGenius: Likes to taunt his opponents about his "genius" finesse.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Instead of freaking out about Jiroh apparently stalking him at tennis practices, he is amused by the fact that Jiroh is his {{fanboy}} and considers him a friend after this.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite his cocksure attitude and habit of making a fool of others, he also watches over his [[SempaiKohai underclassmen]] in the tennis club.
** This is most prominent in the [[AdaptationExpansion fifth OVA special]] of ''The New Prince of Tennis''. After witnessing [[spoiler:Ohtori]] suffer a rather one-sided loss during the team shuffle, Marui offers him advice so that he has the confidence to participate in a rematch.
* TheNicknamer: In ''The New Prince of Tennis,'' he calls [[SmugSnake Kite]] "[[KiteretsuDaihyakka Kite]][[ShoutOut retsu]]."
* OddFriendship: With Kite, to the point the others start treating Jackal like he was cheated on.
** FireForgedFriends: He and Kite are this. They become a formidable doubles pair after a coincidental meeting, but [[PowerOfTrust their camaraderie]] gets put to the test.
* OralFixation: Always chewing bubble gum during his matches.
* SignatureMove: 'Tightrope Walking' and 'Iron Pole Strike.'
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Jackal.
* VerbalTic: "Daroi?" He even has a song titled this.
* VocalDissonance: [[WordOfGod Despite his]] [[{{Bishonen}} looks]], his voice and manner of speech are decidedly masculine.
* WeakButSkilled: Marui's special volleys are more about skill and execution than power. He's mastered hard-to-return drop shots, but lobs and baseline shots tend to get behind him. He also has stamina issues (which he tries to remedy by eating lots of sugar before matches).
* WillNotBeAVictim: In the sequel series, he's [[spoiler:betrayed by Kite]] during their doubles match. With his partner apparently siding with their opponents, the match becomes 3-on-1 against him, but he refuses to back down and attempts to [[InTheEndYouAreOnYourOwn return every ball himself]].

!'''Jackal Kuwahara'''

Jackal Kuwahara is half-Brazilian and is known as the "Iron Wall of Defense". He also typically acts as a look out and chaperone-of-sorts for Rikkai's ace player, Kirihara Akaya, and at times takes responsibility for the sophomore's actions.

-->Voiced by: Creator/NobuyukiHiyama (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Jackal:
* AdaptationExpansion: See BaldOfAwesome below.
* BadassNormal: Doesn't have flashy moves like the other Rikkai members, but is still an excellent defender.
* BaldOfAwesome: The anime explains that he shaves himself bald to honor his coach who taught him tennis when he lived in Brazil.
* BrownEyes
* ButNotTooForeign: Half-Brazilian.
* ButtMonkey: Sanada slapped him because he didn't stop Kirihara from challenging Ryoma.
** Aso he usually ends up as the punchline for Marui's CatchPhrase.
-->'''Marui:''' "It'll be done. [[CueCardPause ...By Jackal!]]"
-->'''Jackal:''' Why me?!
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Fire!"
* NiceGuy

* TeamMom: He often has to babysit Kirihara and keep him out of trouble.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Marui.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Shitenhouji Chuu]]
Shitenhouji is shown to be the strongest team from Kansai as they are winners of the Kansai Tournament, having defeated Makinofuji in the final this year. They were runner-ups to the Japanese National Tournament, losing to Rikkaidai under the leadership of then second-year student Kuranosuke Shiraishi, who remains this year as captain. They also have two new additions: Senri Chitose and Kintaro Tooyama. Being Osakanites, all of the members of the team speak in the infamous KansaiRegionalAccent; Shiraishi, Kenya Oshitari, and Kintaro have particularly strong accents.

!'''Toyama Kintarou'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kintarou_9006.jpg

Tooyama Kintarou is the youngest member of Shitenhouji and the team's strongest player. He is very carefree and naive, and has trouble speaking, often messing up names and sayings. He forms a rivalry with Ryoma, though they only get to play a single point. He uses a "Wild" tennis style (and acrobatic play) that takes advantage of his natural stamina and strength, being able to lift a scooter over his head and throw it with ease. Kintaro is extremely afraid of Shiraishi, after reading a manga about monsters with poison claws, and as such, his unbound imagination comes up with the peculiar idea of Kuranosuke having poison claws under the bandages that he always wears around his hands and arms. This fear is used to keep him in line.

-->Voiced by: Creator/YuuSugimoto (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kintarou:
* BadassAdorable
* BoisterousBruiser: Always smiling, laughing, and cracking jokes.
* ChallengeSeeker: If he hears the opponent is strong, he is quick to ask for a match.
* DarkSkinnedRedhead
* DitzyGenius
* FieryRedhead: Coupled with leopard t-shirts, which complete his "WildChild" theme.
* {{Foil}}: Ryoma's most prominent rival of the same age, he's in many ways his complete opposite in personality (cheerful, friendly, unrestrained).
* {{Keet}}
* {{Malaproper}}: Apparently, he got off the wrong train due to being unable to read kanji well. He also always refers to Ryoma as "Koshimae", using the AlternateCharacterReading of his name, despite Ryoma openly correcting him.
* NoSenseOfDirection: Getting off the train ''in the wrong city''?
* OddFriendship: Him and [[FragileFlower Sakuno]].
** Also with Horio's older cousin, who joined him in his wacky trip to Tokyo.
* TheRival: He is very enthusiastic about being this to Ryoma.
* SkilledButNaive: He's the best player on the team, even stronger than the club captain, Shiraishi. Literally everyone on the team is scared of his power. Even his signature move, 'Super Ultra Great Delicious Giant Swing Mountain Storm' is stronger than Gin's 108th level Hadokyuu.
** He's one of the few who can mix this ''and'' UnskilledButStrong. Yeah, he's super strong and all, but seriously lacks skill as well.
* SignatureMove: "[[CallingYourAttacks Super Ultra Great]] [[LongTitle Delicious Giant Swing Mountain Storm]]".
* SuperStrength: He can lift a ''motor scooter over his head.''
* TheIdiotFromOsaka
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Takoyaki.

!'''Shiraishi Kuranosuke'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_shiraishi_2093.jpg

Shiraishi Kuranosuke is the captain of Shitenhouji. He is heralded as having "Perfect Tennis", and is referred to as "The Bible of Shitenhouji." Due to Shiraishi's hard work, he masters the basic forms of tennis and gradually obtains the skill where he can perform strokes without mannerisms or habitual actions that can lessen the use of stamina, which has a great effect. Shiraishi himself believes that perfect tennis is silly notion and finds his own style boring, but he realized that only winning matters, so he continues to employ his style. [[spoiler: He is also the first person to ever beat Fuji in an official singles match, as well as defeating all of Fuji's counters]]. Shiraishi is often shown sporting white bandages on his left arm, for some reason unknown. There are several instances where he attempts to take them off, but never really finishes the process and winds them back up. In the manga it is revealed that [[spoiler: a gold gauntlet or arm guard like material is found under the bandages. When the gauntlet is removed the speed of his left arm sky-rockets]].

-->Voiced by: YoshimasaHosoya (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Shiraishi:
* BeetleManiac: Listed in the fanbooks and has a whole song dedicated to his pet beetle.
* BigEater: Mentioned in the fanbooks. He eats an extravagant meal during lunch and finished 2nd in [[ClownSchool Shitenhouji's "It's New Years! Eat Until You Drop Complete Swimsuit Competition!"]] behind [[LightningBruiser Kenya]] during his second year.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Fuji and Yukimura. Aside from being {{The Ace}}s from their teams, they also are cordial, nice outside the courts and love plants (Fuji has cacti, Yukimura plants flowers and Shiraishi breeds poison grass).
* {{Bishonen}}
** [[BandageBabe Bandage Bishonen]]
* BoringButPractical: His 'Bible' tennis is not as flashy some of the other characters, but he has refined it to the point where he easily crushes fancy techniques such as [[spoiler:Fuji's counters.]]
* TheCaptain
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Mmm, ecstasy."
* ChickMagnet: In Pair Puri he also is shown to be as unintentionally succesful as Saeki, and this is further confirmed by Kenya [[AllThereInTheManual in one of the fanbooks]].
** CluelessChickMagnet: He's also completely at a loss when it comes to dealing with [[NoGuyWantsToBeChased assertive girls]]. Hilariously, his profile in the fanbooks all say that he doesn't like or is bad at dealing with girls that hit on guys.
* JackOfAllStats
** MasterOfAll: While he doesn't have an area of specialization, he also doesn't have any weaknesses and is a very well-rounded player overall. His 'Bible' tennis is capable of rendering special techniques like [[spoiler:Fuji's counters]] and even Gin's Hadoukyuu ineffective.
* NiceGuy: He's fairly polite and amicable, even as an opponent. During the National semifinals, when [[MouthyKid Zaizen]] calls Kawamura Seigaku's [[TheLoad weakest link]], Shiraishi chides him for it.
** And in ''The New Prince of Tennis,'' Yanagi asks him to keep Kirihara from going into [[BloodKnight Devil Mode]]. Though reluctant at first, he still ends up keeping his promise.
* PoisonousPerson: His knowledge of poisonus herbs is insane. He also likes to plant them and keeps Kintarou controlled by telling him [[BlatantLies his bandaged arm is poisoned]].
* [[spoiler: PowerLimiter: What's under the infamous bandages.]]

They both leave tennis for a time, and Chitose eventually transfers to Shitenhouji, though at a lesser level due to blind spots in injured eye. Oshitari Kenya is famously known as the "[[RedBaron Speed Star of Naniwa]]". Kenya is even faster than Shiraishi Kuranosuke and Kamio Akira. He is Hyoutei's Yuushi Oshitari's cousin.

-->Voiced by: Creator/JunFukuyama (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kenya:
* AdaptationDyeJob: He's a blond in the manga, but the anime makes him more of a brunette.
* BigEater: Stated in the fanbooks. He eats three meals in 12 minutes at lunch and was crowned the Eat-Until-You-Drop King in his second year after winning [[ClownSchool Shitenhouji's "It's New Years! Eat Until You Drop Complete Swimsuit Championship!"]] He beat out [[TheCaptain Shiraishi]].
* CatchPhrase: "[[GratuitousEnglish No speed, no life!]]"
* CoolPet: Has a pet iguana.
* CountryCousin: Subverted. While he and Yuushi used to live in the same town when they were kids, Yuushi eventually moved to Tokyo. Also by personalities, Yuushi is more refined and calm, while Kenya is more relaxed and goofs around with his teammates.
* CounterAttack: He's a counter puncher who relies on his speed to return shots.
* DyeHard: InUniverse. His hair used to be rather dark when he was younger.
* AFriendInNeed: During the National semifinals, he volunteers to [[spoiler:give up his spot in Doubles 1 to Chitose]] so that the latter can [[spoiler:play against Tezuka]].
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: Averted. He's fairly intelligent.
* LightningBruiser: The best example in the series.
* MyDadCanBeatUpYourDad: A common argument between him and Yuushi is which of the two super rookies is better, with Kenya bragging about Kintarou and Yuushi bragging about Ryoma. When this argument breaks out in their dorm room at the U-17 camp, Kamio tells them to shut up.
* SpeedEchoes: Shown to be so fast that he creates afterimages of himself when he runs.
* ThickerThanWater: He and Yuushi argue a lot, but [[AllThereInTheManual in Pair Puri]], they band together quickly after finding out their respective teammates (Zaizen and Gakuto) have been insulting them behind their backs.
* WalkOnWater: Both exaggerated and played for laughs in the sequel series. Kenya's so fast that he can actually run on water, but he can only hold out for so long.
--> '''Kenya:''' I might be faster than you, but my balance is terrible!
--> '''Ryoma:''' [[LampshadeHanging ...But you're running on water.]]
* WeaksauceWeakness: Waiting time and slowness in general. {{Exaggerated}} and PlayedForLaughs [[AllThereInTheManual in a Pair Puri omake]], Yuushi exploits this by showing Kenya pictures of things that require long wait times and uttering the dreaded ArcWords:
--> '''Kenya:''' D-Don't tell me it's that destructive magic word. Stop it! That's as far as you'll go!
--> '''Yuushi:''' ''[[GratuitousEnglish Slow life]].''
--> '''Kenya:''' [[CriticalHit Gyaaaaa!]]
** Taken a step further when he tries to counter Yuushi by sending him a picture of a caterpillar (which Yuushi hates)... Except [[HoistByHisOwnPetard he gets done in by its slowness]].

!'''Konjiki Koharu'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_koharu_6123.jpg

Konjiki Koharu uses data tennis and is said to have more data than Seigaku's Inui Sadaharu. With an IQ of 200, he stores all of the information inside his head. Konjiki and his doubles partner Hitouji Yuuji are known as Naniwa's Baka Couple.

-->Voiced by: Creator/RyoNaitou (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Koharu:
* BaldOfAwesome
* DepravedHomosexual: PlayedForLaughs, as he would make gay-joke routines with his doubles partner and scare the opponents. It's taken UpToEleven in the Pair Puri omakes, where he is seen fawning also over Kamio, Atobe, Tezuka, Saeki and Sengoku.
* DitzyGenius: By his goofy personality, is difficult to guess he has an IQ of 200.
* LovableSexManiac: ''Especially'' in the manga. Poor Kaidoh.
* MasterOfDisguise: Parodied without any mercy.
* {{Megane}}
* TheNicknamer: He specially calls Shiraishi by the AffectionateNickname "Kurariin".
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Again, ''poor Kaidoh''.

!'''Hitouji Yuuji'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_yuuji_2383.jpg

Hitouji Yuuji appears to be the star of this doubles team, attracting all the attention with his genius and his hilarious antics. While Konjiki is entertaining the crowd (and his opponents), Hitouji is actually studying his opponents. He can then imitate their mannerisms, voices, and techniques.

-->Voiced by: Suguru Kumabuchi (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Yuuji:
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He is a very capable player, who also goofs aroud on court with his doubles partner Koharu.
* CrazyJealousGuy: To Koharu, PlayedForLaughs. ("THAT'S ADULTERY!")
* HachiMaki
* MaskPower
* MegaManning

!'''Zaizen Hikaru'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_zaizen_9767.jpg

Zaizen Hikaru is considered to be a genius. He is also the doubles partner of Oshitari Kenya. Zaizen is rather disrespectful, calling Kawamura Takashi Seigaku's "extra baggage" and insulting Chitose Senri after his loss to Kunimitsu Tezuka.

-->Voiced by: Hirofumi Araki (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Zaizen:

* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: He is Tsukkomi for his ''entire school'' (where even the principal is goofy). He is the only student who doesn't laugh at any of the jokes there.
* DeadpanSnarker
* MouthyKid: Calling your own sempai "gross"?
* PaleSkinnedBrunette
* PerpetualFrowner: He never laughs at any of the jokes at school.
** He even says that he would have chosen another school if he had known it was going to be like this. When Shiraishi asks him then why he enroled at Shitenhouji, he replies "It's closer to home".
* StraightMan: After all the tennis club attempts to make him laugh, Zaizen simply says ''"If you wanted me to join, then you should have asked to begin with"''. All the others are perplexed, since they never thought about that.
* TeenGenius: Subverted. Gets mentioned as one, though we never see him play a match.
** Played straight when the 2nd lot of the 'Another Story' [=OVAs=] came out. We see him team up with Koishikawa and he does pretty well.
* WhenHeSmiles: The only time he slightly chuckled at a joke, Shiraishi is quick to point it out, which Zaizen [[{{Tsundere}} completely denies]].

!'''Koishikawa Kenjirou'''

----
Tropes associated with Koishikawa:

* DemotedToExtra: Was supposed to have a larger role, but Chitose's appearance shot that to hell.

[[folder:Higa Chuu]]
For the past 26 years, no team from Okinawa has made it past the Kyushuu Tournament. The run of misfortune finally ended this year with the surge of a new powerhouse, Higa. Under the leadership of Kite Eishirou, Higa dominated its Regional Tournament, dethroning Shishigaku, last year's National semifinalist. They have quite the unorthodox techniques, based in Okinawan martial arts, as well as ''very''... unconventional ways to treat their rivals, making them a sort of BlackSheep among the present teams.

!'''Kite Eishirou'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kite_7047.jpg

Kite Eishirou is the captain of Higa, whose nicknames are "Killer" and "The Hitman", as well as receiving a reputation for defeating the aces of many other teams. He has an aggressive play style and can quickly figure out and target the opponent's weaknesses. He scouts various players and teaches them "Shukuchihou", a technique based on martial arts that gives the opponent the impression that the user is able to approach the net or baseline in one step from anywhere on the court. He is the only member that is able to use the "Shukuchihou" in any direction due to his balance. He also teaches them their signature techniques. Kite remains composed and polite in front of other teams, yet extremely condescending towards them, and if physically attacked, won't hesitate to strike back. His tennis style combines the "Shukuchihou" with other techniques such as his powerful "Big Bang" serve, and his "Habu", a shot that curves randomly, making it extremely difficult to return.

-->Voiced by: Tarusuke Shingaki (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kite:
* TheCaptain
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Goya kuwasuyo."
* ChildhoodFriends: According to the fanbook "Perfect Edition Season 2 Volume 8", he and Kai knew each other since they were 5 years old.
* CombatPragmatist: He's not above cheating if he can.
** DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: In OVA 6, during his match with Tezuka.
* EvilCounterpart: He resembles Tezuka and even has some of the same seriousness but has the completely opposite approach on the court. While Tezuka is honorable and completely against on-court violence, Kite relishes in it.
* ExtremeOmnivore: He explains that the entire team is immune to Inui's juice because they're customed to eating goya (bitter melon).
* TheFashionista: According to extras, Kite was the one who suggested the team to have trendy haircuts after seeing a magazine photo of Chitose and Tachibana (back when he had long bleached hair), reason why the teammates all have signature hairstyles. Also his bio says he spends his money on Glasses care, Hair dressing place and fashion magazines. He also spends 1 hour and 15 minutes setting his hair.
* AFatherToHisMen: All his teammates respect and obey him.
* FourEyesZeroSoul
* InTheBack: [[spoiler:He hits a ball at Marui in this way in ''The New Prince of Tennis'' during their doubles match against Kimijima and Tohno]].
* JustInTime: In the sequel, when Tohno hits a ball aimed at Mori and Ochi after losing their doubles match, Kite deflects it away from them in the nick of time.
* {{Megane}}
* OddFriendship: With Marui.
** FireForgedFriends: With the way their [[PowerOfTrust match]] [[InTheBack played]] [[DoYouTrustMe out]], he and Marui qualify as this.
* PetTheDog: He's quite the asshole to his rivals, but cares for [[TrueCompanions his teammates]]. He can also be very kind to Ayaka from ''Umibe no Secret'' if he's the chosen love interest.
* RedemptionEqualsAffliction: He takes the brunt of [[spoiler:[[{{Jerkass}} Tohno]]'s "executions"]] in place of [[spoiler:[[FireForgedFriends Marui]], [[EyeScream whose eye was already injured]]]] because he felt guilty about [[spoiler:the suffering he caused Marui when he pretended to betray him earlier in their match]].
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: PlayedStraight when he accepts [[spoiler:Kimijima]]'s offer to [[spoiler:pretend to betray Marui in order to create a chance to injure Tohno]], with the promise that he would be recommended into the First String. Later, [[spoiler:it gets inverted, because Kite, moved by Marui's determination to continue the match despite being betrayed, [[ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules ditches Kimijima's offer and teams up with Marui for good]]]].
* SignatureMove: 'Shukuchihou'. Unlike the others, he can move in any direction, rather than just back and forth.
** Also, Big Bang, which he taught Tanishi. [[spoiler:In fact, he can also use almost all the moves his teammates can use, ''[[http://www.mangareader.net/new-prince-of-tennis/87/10 having taught his entire team their moves]]''.]]
* SmugSnake: Though not as bad as Saotome.
** Also invoked in the ''Umibe no Secret'' DatingSim, where Kite has [[PassiveAggressiveKombat very polite yet mocking]] speech patterns [[WhydidYouMakeMeHitYou that he uses]] ''[[WhydidYouMakeMeHitYou specifically]]'' [[WhydidYouMakeMeHitYou to provoke people]] (like [[{{Jerkass}} Akutsu]]). To be fair, if by that point he's fond of the Umibe girl Ayaka, [[CharacterDevelopment he *does* show a kinder side]] (like apologizing to Ayaka openly if she gets caught in the fights [[PetTheDog and meaning it]].)
** It gets exploited in New Prince of Tennis, since nobody knew if he was betraying Marui in favor of the opponents. [[spoiler:Turns out he had to make it look convincing so they could take down Tohno.]]
* StealthExpert: All the team is trained in Okinawa Martial arts. An example of his abilities is during the Yakiniku miniarc, where he slips hot sauce in Ishida Gin's plate without anyone noticing.

!'''Kai Yuujirou'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kai_148.jpg

Kai Yuujirou is the vice-captain who has a tendency to be brash and impulsive despite being the oldest member. He normally plays with his right hand, though he switches to his natural left-handed style while using a racquet with a reverse grip to use his "Viking Horn" shot, which curves before reaching the opponent's side. he utilizes this attack by waiting for his opponents reaction and at the last second, strikes back to the opposite side of the reaction.

-->Voiced by: Daisuke Nakamura (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kai:
* ChildhoodFriends: According to the fanbook "Perfect Edition Season 2 Volume 8", he and Kite knew each other since they were 5 years old.
* {{Jerkass}}
** CharacterizationMarchesOn: Is quite kinder in ''Umibe no Secret'', though like Kite he isn't above behaving not so nicely towards other players.
* KickTheDog: See Saotome's section, as he was the one [[spoiler:who injured poor Ojii under his orders.]]
** PunchClockVillain: He was instructed to do so.
* [[NiceHat Nice Cap]]
* NumberTwo: He's the sub-captain, but Rin seems to have a very strong in-team presence as well.
* PeekABangs
* SignatureMove: 'Shukuchihou' and 'Viking Horn'.

!'''Tanishi Kei'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_kei_7224.jpg

Tanishi Kei possesses a large body, which allows him to utilize his "Big Bang" serve that uses his weight and the gravity from falling in order to make a nearly unreternable serve. It takes a lot of stamina, which decreases its power over time, allowing it to be returned, which was taken advantage of by Ryoma.

-->Voiced by: Creator/YojiUeda (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Tanishi:

* {{Acrofatic}}: He's rather fast for a big guy.
* BigEater: In the yakiniku episode, he actually eats with tongs. The sight grosses out ''everyone'' around.
** ExtremeOmnivore: In the same episode, he can also withstand Inui's juices, which Eishirou says are mild to what he's accustomed to in Okinawa.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Shimiti ichundo!" ("I'm gonna attack!").
* FatBastard: He's pretty much built like a sumo wrestler.
* LightningBruiser
* SignatureMove: 'Shukuchihou' and 'Big Bang'.

!'''Hirakoba Rin'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_rin_4487.jpg

Hirakoba Rin is the only member of the team who likes fair play. He uses "Habu", which has the stance of a smash, except that it curves wildly and unpredictable while in the air and bouncing, and "Giant Habu", which curves immediately after leaving the racquet, though it causes his hand to go numb, limiting it to one use per match. Hirakoba is a very formidable player, being able to take out [[spoiler: Fuji's triple counter and Takashi's Hadoukyuu]]. He is one of the few players to stand up to Coach Saotome, [[spoiler: refusing an order to attack Seigaku's coach feeling the match was too interesting]].

-->Voiced by: Creator/HiroyukiYoshino (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Hirakoba:
* DarkSkinnedBlond
** DyeHard: InUniverse. Flashbacks show his hair was black the previous year.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: A usual threat to Rin is forcing him to eat goya (bitter melon).
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Openly questions Saotome-sensei's methods if he's pumped up enough in the match.
* TheLancer: Shares this position with the proper sub-captain, Kai.
* SignatureMove: '[[FlashStep Shukuchihou]]', 'Habu', 'Giant Habu'.

!'''Chinen Hiroshi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_hiroshi_4098.jpg

Chinen Hiroshi is the tallest player in Higa Chuu, who uses his size and looks to mock and intimidate his opponents.

-->Voiced by: Kazuya Sueyoshi (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Chinen:

* LooksLikeCesare: Very tall, very pale, very darkhaired aside of the white stripe on his hair.
* FaceOfAThug: Doesn't seem to be a bad guy per se. But holy shit, he looks creepy.
* SkunkStripe
* SignatureMove: '[[FlashStep Shukuchihou]]'.

!'''Shiranui Tomoya''' and '''Aragaki Koichi'''

----
Tropes associated with Shiranui and Aragaki:
* PlotPoweredStamina
* ThoseTwoGuys
* StoneWall: They can't use Okinawan Tennis techniques, but they make up for it with sheer staying power that could give [[PlotPoweredStamina Kaidoh]] a run for his money.

Tropes associated with Krauser:
* AerithAndBob: His name makes him stand out as a foreigner.
* BiblicalMotifs: His SignatureMove.
* BloodKnight
* BlondesAreEvil: Ruthless, deadpan and crucifies opponents against the fence.
* BullyingADragon: Didn't go well with either Kirihara or Nakagauchi
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu - BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: He got it badly when playing against Kirihara.
** He receives this again in New Prince of Tennis against Nakagauchi.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: Like many of the Nagoya foreign players, he starts berating Rikkai as a "team from a little island". Yagyuu, however, translates this for Kirihara as [[BlatantLies "The Seaweed idiot"]], so Kirihara goes on Devil Mode.
* ForeignExchangeStudent
* GratuitousEnglish
* GrayEyes
* RealMenWearPink: His hobby is Flower Arrangement.
* SignatureMove: Haritsuku Gomen (Dismissal by Crucification) and Southern Cross
* TokenMinority: So far the only canon caucassian character at U-17.

!Sakata Richard

Sakata Richard is a 3rd year student from St. Icarus and captain of the school's tennis club. He captained his team to the Nationals, only to lose against Sengoku Kiyosumi of Yamabuki. In New Prince of Tennis, he is described as a western foreigner by Dan Taichi, Urayama Shiita, and Horio Satoshi.
-->Voiced by: Eisuke Tsuda (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Sakata:
* AerithAndBob: "Richard" really stands out between so many japanese names.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He has clearly african heritage, but it's not stated from where exactly.
* ButNotTooForeign: Has a japanese last name.

Kiichi Kuki is a third year student Kakinoki Middle School and the captain of the school tennis club.
-->Voiced by: Eiji Takemoto (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Kuki:
* TheCaptain
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a little one under his left eye, as indicative of his {{Jerkass}} role.
* IShallTauntYou: He should know better than provoking Tezuka and Fuji before a match.
* {{Jerkass}}
* LaserGuidedKarma: Right after he taunts Tezuka and insults Fudomine as a "No-Name School", his team gets crushed by Fudomine very easily.
* SoreLoser: He tells Mizuki about Tezuka's injury.

!Ginka Junior High
Despite their tournament record, Ginka Middle School is a weak school; Echizen Ryoma inadvertently defeats their entire team during their practice match. Their records were only good due to winning against weak schools. When they played against Seigaku, they forfeited due to being scared of their regulars. When it came time to play against Rikkai Daigaku Fuzoku during the Kantō Tournament, they stole Sadaharu Inui's special juice, as they thought it was what made Seigaku strong, and mixed it with their own ingredients to create "The Three Flavors of Ginka". As a result, they ended up having to forfeit the match due to food poisoning.

----
Tropes associated with Ginka Tennis Club:
* {{Butt Monkey}}s
* {{Dirty Coward}}s: They purposely forfeit their match against Seigaku. And also the whole team didn't have any constraints with bullying Sakuno.
* {{Jerkass}}es: They purposely bullied Sakuno by hiding her tennis ball and make her look for it between all their balls. That's until Ryoma kicked their collective asses.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Twice.
** During the Prefecture Tournament, they try so hard to not get Seigaku, that they end up getting paired against [[FromBadToWorse Rikkaidai]].
** Trying to spy on Seigaku, they steal a big bottle of Inui's juice believeing it's the key of their performance. The whole team gets sick right before their match against Rikkaidai (they would have been crushed anyway).

!Midoriyama Junior High
In the anime, Midoriyama was defeated by Josei Shonan so it was only mentioned once in the anime, while in the manga, it was the other way around. All of the regulars are second-years, and the team has 3 specialist coaches. However, their arrogance caused them to take Seigaku too lightly, which caused them to lose 3 sets in a row.

Fortunately, they gained a spot in the Nationals. However, Midoriyama is probably the weakest team compared to the other 5 teams from the Kanto region. They were easily eliminated in the first round of the nationals.

----
Tropes associated with Midoriyama Tennis Club:
* DemotedToExtra, AdaptedOut: The anime replaces them with Jousei Shounan. The Musicals only mentions them in a brief recount song. In the manga, however, their miniarc is, if not, very forgettable.
* PushoverParents: The coach Kiraku pressures his son into playing tennis, also because he was an UnknownRival to Echizen Nanjiroh.
* WellDoneSonGuy: TheCaptain, Kiraku Yasuyuki, plays on the team only because his father wants him to, to the point he started to get tired of tennis until he faced against Ryoma.

Ryuuzaki Sumire is the coach of Seigaku's tennis club and one of the school's math teachers. She helped Echizen Nanjirou develop his skills and become a professional tennis player. She has a granddaughter named Sakuno with a crush on Ryoma. Ryuuzaki has a rivalry with her ex-mentor, Banda Mikiya a.k.a. Banji, who is the coach for Yamabuki Chuu. She constantly yells, but she is considered to be a great and reliable coach. She has a good relationship with her regulars and participates in their recreational group activities: The bowling reunion and the beach-volley mini-tournament with Rokkaku Chuu.

----
Tropes associated with Banda:
* CoolOldGuy: One of the few people capable of keeping Akutsu at line.
* EyesAlwaysShut
* PerpetualSmiler: He always smiles. And I mean, ALWAYS. So much that it creeps everyone out. [[BerserkButton And this sends Nanjirou in screaming fits.]]
* TheRival: He is this to Seigaku's coach Ryuuzaki Sumire, in terms of Team Coaching.
* SitcomArchNemesis: To Nanjirou. It only takes the mention of his name to set Nanjirou on rampage.
* TeamDad

!'''Sakaki Tarou'''

Sakaki Tarou is the of Hyoutei's team. Sakaki is also a music teacher for the school and has complete confidence in Atobe Keigo, trusting that he is capable of defeating any opponent.

-->Voiced by: Creator/JurotaKosugi (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Sakaki:
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Very efficient coach and music teacher. Just as quirky as his own pupils.
* TheDandy
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Itte yosh!"
* SternTeacher: He is very strict, to the point of changing regulars if they loose a match even once. He only made the exception with Shishido because it involved an ImportantHaircut from Shishido, Ohtori's pleas and Atobe asking him personally.
** He later keeps the same regular team for the National Tournament.

!'''Hanamura Aoi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_hanamura_3796.jpg
Hanamura Aoi is the coach of Jousei Shonan, who refers to her students as masterpieces and constantly tries to recruit new students, especially Ryoma. She is often proud of her own prowess and of her pupils', but is otherwise very calm and professional.

-->Voiced by: Kaori Yamagata (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Hanamura:
* AscendedExtra: In the manga, she doesn't appear at all, where the only we see about her is her name in the Jousei Shounan list. She gets design and characterization in the anime.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Fawns over her pupils almost like a teenage girl, when she's not coolly supervising their training menus.
* HotTeacher
* {{Meganekko}}
* MsFanservice: Big breasts? Check. A pretty face with a BeautyMark? Check. Nice red hair? Check. A melodious mezzosoprano voice? Check. Tight clothes when not at work? Oh baby, CheckPlease.
* NotSoDifferent: To Sumire Ryuzaki. While Ryuzaki sensei doesn't agree with her view of students as "masterpieces", they both care very much about their boys. Even Hanamura looks a lot like [[IWasQuiteALooker Sumire when she was young]].
* {{Shotacon}}: She is ''very'' attached to her students, and even seems to give ''a lot of attention'' to Ryoma.

!'''Ojii'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_ojii_5772.jpg
Ojii is the coach of Rokkaku Chuu. He is an elderly man who manufactures creates special wooden racquets for his players, taking into consideration their skills and personality.

-->Voiced by: Bunmei Tobayama (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Ojii:

* BaldOfAwesome
* CoolOldGuy: The boys of the team and the kids adore him.
* EyesAlwaysShut
* TheMentor: To the Rokkaku kids, who would later join the tennis club.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Everyone only refers to him as "Ojii" ("Grandpa").
* TeamDad: He not only cares and trains his boys at Rokkaku, but also makes them their wooden racquets and inspires them.

!'''Watanabe Osamu'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_osamu_97.jpg
Osamu Watanabe is the coach of the Shitenhouji tennis club. Watanabe reminds us of a younger (and hipper) version of Yamabuki's Banda Mikiya. Like the latter, the former's interaction with his students is very laid-back, often shown joking around with them. Watanabe is also pretty sly. When the team first learned of Chitose Senri's resignation, Watanabe appeared ambivalent about the issue.

During the match against Seigaku, knowing how much the team needed Chitose and how much Chitose wanted to play Tezuka Kunimitsu, Watanabe "dragged" Chitose back onto the team. This and other incidents show that despite his appearance, Watanabe knows what he is doing. Osamu gave Shiraishi a gold gauntlet to wear until graduation.

Watanabe is shown to be either cheap or poor, telling his team that he'll treat them to somen noodles if they win against Seigaku (as opposed to Ryuuzaki Sumire, who told her team she'll treat them to yakiniku).

-->Voiced by: Yusa Kooji (JP)

----
Tropes associated with Osamu:

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite the fact he looks like a bum and is in general a very relaxed guy, he is actually a very capable coach who knows how to handle the tennis club different personalities.
* FirstNameBasis: All his students always call him "Osamu" rather than "Watanabe-sensei". Not that he minds.
* {{Foil}}: To Hyotei's coach Sakaki Taro. While both are very competent coaches who care and know how to work with the students, their overall personalities are opposites. Sakaki is more stern, TheStoic, TheDandy, while Osamu is more carefree, relaxed, and looks like a hippie.
* NiceHat
* OralFixation: He always has a toothpick on his mouth.
* PeekABangs: His left eye is usually covered by hair.
* PermaStubble
* TeamDad
* TricksterMentor: He would do anything to motivate his students, even if that implies fooling them.
** Instead of [[spoiler:accepting Chitose's form to resign the club, he just went ahead and registered Chitose for Doubles 1 anyway. This ended up motivating Chitose since he got to challenge Tezuka]].
** In Another Story II, he [[spoiler:purposely lied to the team telling them they needed to recruit Zaizen, so Shiraishi could figure out that they needed to diversify the team]].
* XMeetsY: He is pretty much a younger version of Yamabuki's coach Banjii and Nanjiroh mashed up together.

!'''Saotome Harumi'''
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pot_saotome_6962.jpg
Saotome Harumi is the ruthless Higa Chuu tennis coach. He isn't above dirty play and won't hesitate to instruct his players to aim balls to the rival team's coach.

----
Tropes associated with Saotome:

* BaldOfEvil
* {{Jerkass}}: He would instruct his players to hit rival coaches with the ball.
* SadistTeacher: He is the only known teacher to be mean and tough to his students.
