[[folder:Party Members]]

!!Claude C. Kenny
The hero of the game. Son of Ronyx Kenny and Illia Silvestri, his desire to prove himself on his own merits leads him to get too close to an alien device that teleports him to an uncharted planet. There, he saves one of the local girls with his phaser, and is mistaken for a legendary hero.

* AllMenArePerverts: During a PA with Welch in Fun City, Claude can wind up buying what is obviously an adult magazine, admiring the cover girl and her assets, ''out loud''. Welch was not surprised about it.
* BadassNormal: He's pretty ordinary, but proves to be deadly with a sword on skill alone.
* {{Bishonen}}
* ChickMagnet: Every female party member can end up displaying some sort of attraction to him. Even at the same time (for example, a PA with Rena and Precis has the two arguing about him).
* {{Deuteragonist}}: If Rena is chosen as the lead.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Claude's repeated attempts to reach the Calnus with his communicator. [[spoiler:By the time they finally got to him, it was the point that Claude didn't want to leave his new friends behind.]]
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Primarily a swordsman, but he also has a couple fist techniques (some of which were also used by Illia).
* IChooseToStay: [[spoiler:Halfway through [[DiscOneFinalDungeon Ell]], the Calnus has finally picked up Claude's communicator signal and they forcibly teleport him out of Expel. When Claude finds out from his father about the planet's approaching destruction, he asks to be sent back, but Ronyx uses his authority as admiral to put Claude in his place, believing it to be for Claude's own safety. Claude insists, using an excuse that he wants to say goodbye to his friends. Ronyx relents, but when Claude is sent back to Ell, he intentionally leaves behind his communicator so that they won't be able to track him again.]]
* TheMatchmaker: A PA sees Claude becoming one for Leon, who has expressed an interest in all the female party members.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Shares traits with both his father, Ronyx, and his implied mother, Illia.
* StepfordSmiler: A flashback shows how Claude made himself sound more enthusiastic to be cruising on a starship for the first time than he actually was, even while the other officers tried to use him to put a good word toward his father. Since no one on Expel or Nede knows his father, he can be himself.
* SwordAndSorcerer: The Sword.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Claude struggles to prove himself to get out of his father's shadow.

!!Rena Lanford
The heroine of the game. A cheerful young woman from the village of Arlia on the underdeveloped planet, Expel. She possesses healing powers previously unknown to her world. One day, while visiting the nearby forest, she is attacked by a monster and rescued by a man wearing strange clothes and wielding a weapon that shoots a ray of light.

* CombatMedic: The main healer, but she's still good with her fists and light magic.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: If Claude is chosen as the lead.
* FirstGirlWins: If she has a paired ending with Claude. [[spoiler: ''Blue Sphere'' confirms that this is canon.]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings
* HappilyAdopted: Even as she wants to learn her origins, she still loves her adoptive parents.
* KnifeNut: In ''Blue Sphere'', Rena trades in her knuckles for knives.
* TheMedic: Healing spells were previously unknown to the people of Expel.
* MysteriousWaif
* ObliviousAdoption: Her adopted mother thought this was the case.
* OrphansPlotTrinket: Her pendent.
* PointyEars: [[spoiler: They mark her as not being a native Expellian.]]
* SpaceElves
* SwordAndSorcerer: The Sorcerer. Type B.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair
* WhiteMagicianGirl
* [[spoiler: WitchSpecies: As a Nedian, she doesn't need to tattoo herself to use symbology, particularly the healing spells that are completely alien to Expel.]]
* ZettaiRyouiki: Rena started the trend of doing this with ''Star Ocean'''s female leads.

!!Celine Jules
A treasure hunting symbologist from the town of Marze. Claude and Rena run into her in the city of Krosse, arguing with another symbologist over a treasure map. She talks them into joining her on an expedition to a nearby cavern.

* AntiGravityClothing
* BlueBlood: Her family is aristocracy in her hometown.
* HumanAliens
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Her costume is standard fare as far as RPG {{black magician girl}}s go, but what the heck is up with the floating shower curtains? Said outfit is a bit less impractical in the manga, but still.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Celine is the textbook example.
* LadyOfWar: Celine is pretty refined, but she can kick some ass with her symbology.
* MsFanservice
* OptionalPartyMember: Her offer to join Claude and Rena can be turned down.
* PowerTattoo: They allow her to use symbology.
* [[spoiler: RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She becomes one of these in her special ending with the prince of Krosse. ''Blue Sphere'' confirms that this is canon.]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair
* ZettaiRyouiki: She uses it to show off her [[PowerTattoo Power Tattoos]].

!!Ashton Anchors
A mercenary swordsman. He takes a job to hunt the two-headed dragon in the Salva mine, but is interrupted by Claude and Rena.

* AmazonChaser: In the anime at least, Ashton's dragons like a woman who can fight (ie. Opera with a rocket launcher).
* {{Bishonen}}
* ButtMonkey: If anything's going wrong in a PA that isn't by the player's choice, it's gonna happen to Ashton.
* TheChewToy: Ashton is so unlucky that he is forced to share bodies with a twin-headed dragon, and in a rare instance of averting StoryAndGameplaySegregation, he has the worst LUK stat in the game.
* CursedWithAwesome: Ashton has a pair of dragons grafted to his back. You can undertake a sidequest to remove them but in the end, he [[StatusQuoIsGod doesn't go through with it]] because the exorcism would kill the dragons.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's dorky-looking, a bit cowardly and has a weird fascination with barrels. He's also one of the most skilled physical fighters in the game.
* DualWielding: With both swords and [[CrazyAwesome dragons]].
* TheEeyore: He's a pretty morose guy, considering his crappy luck.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Ashton is a badass even before he gets two dragons grafted to his back.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: His moveset includes a FlashStep and DoppelgangerAttack, so he's the closest thing the party has to a ninja. However, he also has a dragon grafted to his back and ''bells'' on his cape.
* HumanAliens
* MistakenForGay: In Armlock, this will happen if the player chooses the "Hearthrob" in the menu; he and Claude have to share the drink (one glass, two straws). A nearby patron seems amused.
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Him or Opera (and Ernest).
* OptionalPartyMember
* {{Otaku}}: Ashton is an avid follower of ''barrels''.

!!Precis F. Newman
A mechanically minded girl from the town of Linga. She literally runs into Claude and Rena when they arrive seeking to translate the writings found in the Krosse Cave.

* AllTheOtherReindeer: She and her father are outcasts in Linga due to their affinity for machines. She wants to join because Claude was one of the first people not to reject her because of it.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Why she wants to join Claude.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: So hyperactive that Celine describes her as more of a tornado than a teenager. She's also a mechanical genius.
* CuteLittleFangs: In ''Second Evolution'', Precis's new "excited" artwork has these.
* GadgeteerGenius: She has developed robotic technology alongside her father on a planet with technology roughly that of 17th century Earth. In the encyclopedia in the [[VideoGame/StarOceanTillTheEndOfTime third game]], it's heavily implied that technology she developed modernized Expel and along with an abundance of Energy Stone, made Expel a dominant player in galactic politics.
* GenkiGirl
* HumanAliens
* JokeCharacter: Precis has several issues. Specifically:
** Her normal attack, a punch with a robotic arm, takes a fair amount of time to execute and leaves her vulnerable.
** Many of her killer moves are ineffective or have hitboxes that are difficult to line up properly.
** Her powerful killer moves require unlocking them via the Machinery skill, with obscenely low chances of success.
* LittleMissBadass: Precis combines this with GadgeteerGenius.
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Her or Bowman.
* OptionalPartyMember: Can be recruited during Private Actions before meeting Bowman.
* PowerFist
* RocketPunch: One of her Killer Moves.
* TeenGenius
* WrenchWench: Precis can even create new weapons and killer moves for herself using the machinery talent.

!!Bowman Jeane
A pharmacist and close friend of the linguist, Keith. He helps Claude and Rena get the Krosse writings translated and asks to join so that he can investigate the Sorcery globe himself.

* BadassLabcoat: Bowman wears and ''is'' one of these.
* CombatMedic: Heavy on the combat.
* DotingParent: Became one in the time skip between ''The Second Story'' and ''Blue Sphere''.
* HappilyMarried
* HumanAliens
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Precis or him.
* OptionalPartyMember: Joins the party at a certain point if Precis is not already a member, but can still be turned down.

!!Opera Vectra
A noblewoman from one of the artificial moons orbiting the dead planet Tetregenesis. She is searching for her lover, Ernest Raviede, who had travelled to Expel on one of his expeditions, and ends up crashing.

* BadassPrincess: Opera is the heir to the house that rules her entire species.
* {{BFG}}: Opera's weapon. Aside from Killer Moves and flying enemies, all she does is [[PistolWhipping hit people with it]].
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She sure loves her wines.
* LadyOfWar: She's pretty refined, but she can kick some ass.
* MsFanservice
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Ashton or her (and Ernest).
* OptionalPartyMember
* RebelliousPrincess: Opera's parents do not approve of her adventurous nature.
* RubberForeheadAlien
* ShesGotLegs: It's why she gets offended when an arena announcer mistakes her for a man.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: One of Ernest's endings reveals that Opera has a younger sister named Opal, who's only physical difference is her hair color. Said sister also has a massive crush on Ernest.
* ThirdEye: Like all Tetregeniots. Her improved depth perception compared to other [[HumanAliens humans]] makes her a very good markswoman.
* WrenchWench: Not as obvious as Precis, but Opera is a skilled mechanic who can create new weapons and killer moves with the machinery talent.

!!Ernest Raviede
An archeologist from a moon of Tetregenesis. He travelled to Expel on one of his expeditions.

* AdventurerArchaeologist: One of his Private Actions in the remake is an obvious shout out to Indiana Jones.
* BadassTeacher: Teaches at a university when not on an expedition.
* CelibateHero: To a certain extent. Despite having women fall over him left and right (including more than one of the female party members), Ernest is far less interested in romance than he is in adventure and research. When Rena asks him why he doesn't return Opera's affections, Ernest replies that he isn't even certain about his own feelings.
* ChickMagnet: In addition to gaining the affections of both Vectra sisters, Celine's starting romance rating for him is almost as high as Opera's. In a new Private Action added to the PSP version, he and Dias get ogled by a bunch of female passerby in North City. You can also have Rena gush over them, too.
* JokeCharacter: Ernest has a long animation time on his normal attacks, and he lacks both the raw offence of Claude or Ashton and the powerful multi-hit killer moves of Opera or Chisato. However, some will get him anyway because you can steal a DiscOneNuke from his at two points.[[note]]Specifically, the Battle Armor, an armor with 500 defense, which is tied with the best armor in the Bonus Dungeon and nearly 200 points better than every armor before then.[[/note]] He does have a few good Killer Moves, notably Broken Heart, that can help him avoid the bottom tiers.
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Impossible to recruit if Ashton joined the party.
* OptionalPartyMember: Can only join if the party clears an optional dungeon with Opera in the party.
* RubberForeheadAlien
* ThirdEye: A Tetregeniot.
* WhipItGood

!!Dias Flac
Rena's childhood friend. He left Arlia after the death of his family to wander as a mercenary.

* BadassNormal: He's pretty ordinary, but proves to be deadly with a sword on skill alone.
* ChickMagnet: Ernest noticed this and decided to have some fun in North City.
* CrutchCharacter: In Rena's scenario. Mega powerful when he's just with Rena, but Claude will surpass him once he joins for good.
* HeavySleeper: Most of the time in Private Actions, you see Dias sleeping. And that's his ''hobby'', too.
* HumanAliens
* IneffectualLoner
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Rena.
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Him or Leon.
* OptionalPartyMember: Can only join if Rena was chosen as the main protagonist.
* TheStoic
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair

!!Leon D. Geeste
A prodigy working with his parents in the Kingdom of Lacuer's weapon research division. Claude and Rena are enlisted to help him find the final component of the weapon that will beat back the monsters spawned by the Sorcery Globe.

* BadassBookworm: Leon is a pretty powerful mage, plus his weapon ''is'' a book.
* BadassLabcoat: Leon, being a scientist, is also this.
* [[CatGirl Cat Boy]]: A felpool for no readily apparent reason. [[VideoGame/StarOceanTillTheEndOfTime The third game's]] dictionary explains this as being a result of both of Leon's parents carrying a certain recessive gene on the twelfth chromosome.
* ChildMage
* DarkIsNotEvil: Leon favors dark magic, but he's pretty nice once you get past the InsufferableGenius facade.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Books.
* InsufferableGenius: At first.
* MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers: Dias or him.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Actually enjoys a Fun City skit that parodies the Sentai genre that was meant for kids his age.
* OptionalPartyMember: Only joins permanently if Claude was chosen as the main protagonist.
* PowerTattoo: Unless he keeps the symbols in his books, he has unseen tattoos that allow him to use symbology.
* TeenGenius: Though Leon is actually a ''pre''teen example, being just 12 years old. He becomes one proper in ''Blue Sphere''.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair

!!Noel Chandler
A zoologist overseeing a nature reserve on Energy Nede. He helps Claude and Rena seek out the last wild psynard.

* BadassBookworm[=/=]BadassTeacher: Is a university professor.
* CrutchCharacter: In ''Blue Sphere''. He's the only healer available until Opera and Rena join much later.
* EyesAlwaysShut
* FriendToAllLivingThings: He and Rena potentially bond over this.
* JokeCharacter: Noel could be a joke character, considering he comes with spells that do less damage than those of Celine and Leon by that point, and heal less HP than Rena. The game actually lampshades his uselessness if you can get a character to randomly paint his portrait, whose flavor text describes him as having "puny muscles... hope that's okay". Add to that the fact he considers "I don't like fighting, you know!" to be a taunt. With that said, use of Bloody Armor can allow him to heal with no chance of getting damaged.
* MasterOfNone: Noel can heal, but can't even come close to matching Rena. He can use attack magic, but Celine and Leon have him beat there. He equips knuckles as his WeaponOfChoice, but all of the fighters beat him in physical combat, as does Rena.
* TheMedic: Noel serves as a combination of this and a BlackMage.
* ObliviousToLove: He has no idea that his assistant has a massive crush on him.
* OptionalPartyMember
* PointyEars
* TheRedMage
* SpaceElves
* WitchSpecies

!!Chisato Madison
A reporter for the ''Nede Chronicle'', the biggest newspaper in Energy Nede. She follows Claude and Rena around because she thinks they're the biggest story to happen in her lifetime.

* BadassNormal: She's just a skilled martial artist, in spite of the fact that all Nedians are supposed to be able to use Symbology.
* IntrepidReporter
* OptionalPartyMember
* PointyEars
* ProperlyParanoid: She picks up on how odd it is that, in billions of years, no alternative versions of the Ten Wise Men story has surfaced. She's very right to be suspicious.
* SpaceElves
* WitchSpecies: She opts not to take advantage of it for an unknown reason.

!!Welch Vineyard (''Second Evolution'' only)

* CrashIntoHello: In ''Second Evolution''. Notable in that she ''falls from the sky'' and on top of Claude/Rena...
* CrutchCharacter: Depending on your party makeup, Lv.30 Welch can be recruited while your main team is only half that level. Sure, they catch up to her, but...
* GenkiGirl: If you thought Precis was hyper, then you haven't met Welch yet.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Sticks with a pointing hand at the end.
* LittleMissBadass: Welch certainly qualifies.
* OptionalPartyMember
* {{Otaku}}: In the PSP version, you can go to a "fanfic" (doujinshi) sale in Fun City. In one Private Action, Welch will drag Claude there forcibly. And she is very...ahem...familiar with the various genres.

[[folder:Supporting Cast]]

!!Ronyx J. Kenny

Claude's father.

* FamedInStory[=/=]LegendaryInTheSequel: His exploits as a Federation officer, not least of all being the events of ''VideoGame/StarOcean1'', has earned him quite a reputation.
* HeroicBSOD: When he thought Claude has doomed himself when he returned to Expel, right when it's nearing its destruction.
* [[spoiler: KilledOffForReal: Along with his entire crew.]]
* OlderAndWiser
* RetiredBadass: He hasn't retired from the military, but he doesn't really fight anymore.

!!Philia
[[spoiler: The beloved daughter of Dr. Lantis, creator of the Ten Wise Men. It was her death that prompted him to alter the programming of the Wise Men to seek the destruction of everything.]]

* [[spoiler: ArtificialHuman: After she was killed in a terrorist attack, her father transferred her consciousness into an artificial body.]]
* [[spoiler: MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: She's Gabriel's daughter.]]

* IdenticalStranger: Inexplicably identical to Claude.
* LoveInterest: To Celine.
* [[spoiler: RunawayFiance]]

!![[spoiler:Nall]]

[[spoiler:The mayor of Nede's Centropolis.]]

* [[spoiler: UnreliableExpositor: The history of Nede he shares with the party is rather grossly inaccurate. He's no more aware of the truth than the party is though.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Villains]]

!!Gabriel/Indalecio
The Leader of the Ten Wise Men.

* [[spoiler: ArtificialHuman: Following the death of his daughter, Dr. Lantis created a new body for himself, becoming the tenth Wise Man.]]
* BigBad
* [[spoiler: DespairEventHorizon: The death of his daughter.]]
* LightIsNotGood: Gabriel's primary power involves Light. He is about as "good" as a cobra.
* OmnicidalManiac
* SignificantGreenEyedRedhead: An evil version.

!!Lucifer/Cyril
The second most powerful of the Ten Wise Men.

* [[spoiler: ArtificialHuman: Was originally created to be the leader of the Ten Wise Men, but then their creator's daughter was killed...]]
* DemotedToDragon: [[spoiler: As a result of Dr. Lantis making himself the leader of the Ten Wise Men.]]
* TheDragon
* PeekABangs: At least in his new anime mugshot in ''Second Evolution''.
* TheStarscream: He makes no secret about this to the party before they fight.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart

!!Zadkiel/Ruprecht
One of the three Wise Men who guard the entrance to Fineal. A young child of the Wise Men with [[AffablyEvil honorable manners]] to his enemies.

* AffablyEvil: Probably the kindest of the the Wise Men. He greets the party and even apologizes when he mistakes Claude for being an Expellian.
* BlindIdiotTranslation: His FamousLastWords, [[spoiler: What!? I hear nothing about that!]]
** This is fixed in ''Second Evolution''.
* [[GirlWithPsychoWeapon Boy With Psycho Weapon]]: Uses large tuning fork as a weapon.
* [[spoiler: ReallySevenHundredYearsOld]]: He may look very young, but like the other Wise Men, [[spoiler: he's more than a billion years old.]]
* EvilGenius: Uses speed and quick attacks on the enemy. Also under Haniel [[spoiler: and was made to be information gatherers for the Ten Wise Men Project.]]
* TeleportSpam: Uses this for moving.
* [[spoiler: UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Was one of the two who discovered the truth about Filia's death.]]
* WaveMotionTuningFork: Literally.

!!Camael/Nicolus
One of the three Wise Men who guard the entrance to Fineal. An elderly man with a third eye (maybe one eye, he has a visor that make it hard to tell) who seems to know much if you ask him about anything.

* AffablyEvil: See VillainsNeverLie.
* CaptainErsatz: Resembles Keel from ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion''
* EvilGenius: He seems to know quite a lot. Also under Vesper [[spoiler: and one of the two information gatherers for the Ten Wise Men Project.]]
* [[spoiler: UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Was one of the two to discover the death of Filia.]]
* VillainsNeverLie: His information is as accurate as he can make it. This is shown when [[spoiler: he clearly explains to the party that Claude is from another world.]]

!!Raphael/Jibril
One of the three Wise Men who guard the entrance to Fineal. A mysterious hooded being who doesn't talk much.

* AmbiguousGender: Even in PSP adaptation, no one knows if Jibril is male or female. All we see are his/her eyes.
* EvilGenius: Uses speed and quick attacks on the enemy. S/he was one of the characters under Haniel [[spoiler: and was designed as an information analyst during the Ten Wise Men Project.]]
* TeleportSpam: Uses this for moving.

!!Metatron/Berle

One of the Wise Men first encounter and the first to fight in battle. He has the behavior of a knight and is a master at defense.

* AffablyEvil: See LetsfightLikeGentlemen. He complements their fighting ability, but calls them out for not looking at other people's perspectives.
* TheBrute: Fights with sheer fighting strength. Also serves under Michael [[spoiler: and was made the base defense unit for the Ten Wise Men Project.]]
* BarrierWarrior: His best ability is a shield that renders him indestructible for a short amount of time.
* CaptainErsatz: His portrait in ''Second Evolution'' makes him look like if the Ten Wise Men reprogrammed Franchise/RoboCop.
* LetsFightLikeGentlemen: Offers a fight against the party [[spoiler: before Expel collides with Nede.]]
* StoneWall: His defense is the best about him.
