!!Sonic the Hedgehog
The main character of the series. He got his name for his ability to run at the speed of sound.
!!!!!!Voiced by Jaleel White

* BigBrotherInstinct: To Tails, as with most interpretations.
* BigEater: He is a complete glutton when given the option. In fact, he thinks about food so much that he ''screws up'' a mission based on time-traveling back to the palace in the past, so he and Sally can warn King Acorn about Robotnik's impending takeover, because he throws off the time-travelling MacGuffin by starting to daydream about his uncle's chili dog shop.
* BlowYouAway: Sonic's [[SuperSpeed great speed]] allows him to weaponize air against his foes very easily. His TornadoMove notably averts DoNotTouchTheFunnelCloud.
* ButNotTooBlack: Voice actor Jaleel White wanted Sonic to sound "of no race".
* CatchPhrase: "Way past cool!", "Gotta juice", and "Let's do it to it!"
* CoolBigBro: Naturally this to Tails.
* DeadpanSnarker: He definitely had his moments of this.
* FastestThingAlive: He's the TropeNamer via his BraggingThemeTune.
* FatalFlaw: The number of times his cockiness has almost gotten him killed…
* {{Flanderization}}: His arrogance and recklessness come at the cost of his competence a lot more in the second season, more than half the episodes revolve around him causing a problem by rushing into things. His initially more playful rivalry towards Antoine also became flat out naked contempt, to the point where he is rarely able to even look at Antoine without bursting into snide insults. Other traits were effected, though were usually more a case of DependingOnTheWriter.
* FragileSpeedster: He's extremely quick and agile, but he doesn't have a lot of power. There's a reason the most iconic team on the show is him (speed), Sally (brains) and Bunnie (brawn).
* IdiotHero: Is fairly BookDumb and often needs Sally's guidance in missions. He has notable showings of resourcefulness however.
* ImprovFu: When Sonic is involved, basically anything that isn't nailed down [[ImprovisedWeapon can and will be used as a weapon]]. That, and [[GeoEffects the land, too]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Sonic can be incredibly arrogant and frequently butts heads with the other Freedom Fighters (usually Sally or Antoine, even if the latter ''usually'' deserves it). He is altruistic to a fault however and in his reckless enthusiasm, he is only looking out for others.
* LeeroyJenkins: [[{{Flanderization}} He became this in the second season.]] His recklessness is often {{Lampshaded}}.
* MrViceGuy: He's ''very'' prideful.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Although hardly the only one who does so, his overconfidence, impulsiveness and ego often leads him to make mistakes that threaten or even ''ruin'' a plan to oppose Robotnik. Perhaps the best example of this is in "Blast to the Past", where he can't focus on the time and place they intend to TimeTravel to in order to SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong, resulting in the complete failure of the mission and creating a StableTimeLoop.
* OppositesAttract: With Sally.
* RebelLeader: Leader of the Freedom Fighters.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Sally's blue.
* RightWayWrongWayPair: Usually the Wrong Way to Sally's more cautious and meticulous approach, especially in Season Two.
* SmugSuper: To the point that more than a few villainous schemes were designed to manipulate his ego. Sonic is genuinely competent and heroic, however he has no problem constantly bragging about it. In the second season, he would even [[{{Flanderization}} screw up missions due to his overconfidence.]]
* TookALevelInDumbass: While not completely dumb, this version of the character was noticeably more idiot prone than other incarnations, and more reliant on other teammates strategising for him or clearing up his errors, especially after the aforementioned Flanderization.
* TotallyRadical: The series [[CharacterExaggeration tuned up his attitude]] to the point of parody.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Chili-dogs.
* YouAlreadyChangedThePast: In the time-travel episode "Blast to the Past," it is shown that present-day Sonic is responsible for both the loss of most of Snively's hair and Robotnik's roboticized arm.

A young fox who was born with two tails. He can use them to fly by twirling them.
!!!!!!Voiced by Bradley Pierce
* AdaptationalWimp: Even more so than in [[WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog AoStH]]; he is consistently victimized in the few occasions he has any focus in the series.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: Desperately wants to prove he can be trusted with the responsibilities of a full-fledged Freedom Fighter, but he's not competent enough to pull it off.
* BrattyHalfPint: [[DependingOnTheWriter Sometimes.]]
* TheCutie: He's universally considered an adorable little brother by the Freedom Fighters.
* EveryonesBabySister: He's doted on and fussed over by the whole team of Freedom Fighters, probably due to his being the youngest of their group.
* {{Keet}}: This little guy is full of enthusiasm.
* NiceGuy: Mild-mannered, sweet natured, and kind.
* OutOfFocus: Has a much smaller role than in the games and [[WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog AoStH]].
** He did get a bit more screentime toward the end, though. WordOfGod says that if there had been a third season he'd have gotten ''much'' more focus and his role would've been closer to the games.
* SideKick: To Sonic.
* TagalongKid: Though he doesn't get to tag along that often.

!!Princess Sally Acorn
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/KathSoucie

The king's only daughter, the Freedom Fighters' tactician and Sonic's love interest.

* AllThereInTheManual: Her surname 'Acorn' is never mentioned in ''[=SatAm=]'', though it is stated in the show's bible.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Endlessly involving [[LeeroyJenkins Sonic]].
* BadassNormal: Doesn't have Sonic's SuperSpeed, Bunnie's SuperStrength or even Dulcy's draconic powers. She still gets involved in missions and kicks plenty of ass.
* BorrowedCatchphrase: In "The Doomsday Project", after she and Sonic connect the Power Stones.
--> So this is what Power Rings feel like. Wow. Let's do it to it!
* ByTheBookCop: Was constantly trying to keep Sonic in line and endlessly chastised him for taking risks or going outside plans, regardless of whether or not it worked. Whether or not this was justified varied (especially in the second season, where Sonic made increasing fumbles and put the team in danger). [[NotSoAboveItAll She had her own careless bouts at times however.]]
* CloserToEarth: Albeit balanced by [[NotSoAboveItAll occasional bouts of arrogance and childishness]] [[NotSoDifferent equal to Sonic]].
* TheComicallySerious: Often when paired against Sonic, though she is often more jovial than most examples.
* CondescendingCompassion: She is only looking out for Sonic and trying to maintain his cockiness before it gets him into trouble, unfortunately her ever snide and holier than thou attitude in doing so doesn't exactly win him over.
* CoolBigSis: To Tails.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's usually the most sarcastic and snarky of the team.
* DisappearedDad: Because he was trapped in a netherworldly prison.
* DistressBall: Despite being TheSmartGuy of the team, she often got captured rather handily.
* DistressedDamsel: Played with. She is one of the most competent Freedom Fighters, but also one of Robotnik's favorite hostage choices.
* TheDitherer: A few episodes play her as this, especially when conflicting with the very blunt Sonic. Less liable to happen in the Second Season, where her strategic qualities were [[{{Flanderization}} highly exaggerated]] and she began to act as [[PositiveDiscrimination a far more competent alternative]] to [[HyperCompetentSidekick Sonic's recklessness]].
* DontCallMeSir: She is a Princess, but prefers people not to address her as such, as her title is rather a hollow one while the kingdom is under Robotnik's control.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The pilot's version of Sally has a pink color scheme (with black hair) and [[VocalEvolution a higher more childlike voice]]. This design would be used in initial comics as well, which initially used early concept work for the show to develop upon.
* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: She is Princess Sally, after all.
* FatalFlaw: Most of Sally's rare NotSoAboveItAll moments were triggered by her prideful overcompetitiveness to prove Sonic wrong.
* TheFinickyOne: In contrast to the brash reckless Sonic.
* {{Flanderization}}: In Season One, while the more lucid and tactical of the two, Sally was [[NotSoDifferent still as error prone and stubborn in her own methods]] as Sonic was his, with both making up for one's follies as often as the other. Sally had her positive qualities more focused in Season Two, making her more a HyperCompetentSidekick to accommodate Sonic's increased recklessness and lack of intellect.
* {{Foil}}: Largely to Sonic, her meticulous and cautious personality contrasting Sonic's spontaneous and reckless persona. [[NotSoDifferent Both share a similar arrogance and ego]] that only fuels their bickering more. Also to Bunnie, but less so.
* GadgeteerGenius: Became a bit of this in the second season.
* GrumpyBear: Downplayed case. While still friendly and having enthusiastic moments, Sally was generally the most irritable and acerbic of the main team.
* HonoraryUncle: To Tails, who calls her "Aunt Sally".
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Sally is often [[ControlFreak overbearing]] and [[DeadpanSnarker condescending]] to her team about their blunderings, especially Sonic, though under pressure will often admit she is just terrified of what Robotnik might do to them. Spotlighted in "Sonic Racer".
* JackOfAllStats: Sally is the tactician for the Freedom Fighters, she is also a hacking and computing expert, has almost as prominent mechanical skills as Rotor and frequently acts as a TeamMom. The only thing she seems inept in is physical power.
* MissingMom: While we know her dad is trapped in the Void, what happened to her mom is never mentioned. It's implied her father may have been a widower in the TimeTravel episode.
* ModestRoyalty: As she herself puts it: "In the Great Forest, such titles are meaningless."
* NiceGirl: Modest, good-natured and sweet, if somewhat snarky.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Though usually OnlySaneWoman to the other Freedom Fighters, Sally could prove rather arrogant and fallible odd times. This more commonly happened in the first season. Also keep in mind it is often ''her'' that insists on bringing [[TheMillstone Antoine]] along with them to missions.
* OnlySaneWoman: Definitely has traits of this in season 2, especially when frustrated by Sonic or Antoine.
* OppositesAttract: With Sonic.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: When she travels back in time and meets her past self, she introduces herself as "Alicia". Past Sally comments that's her middle name.
* RedIsHeroic: She's the main heroine and her hair is a dark red hue.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Sonic's red, ironically enough.
* RightlySelfRighteous: Sally is often condescending to Sonic for his potentially reckless and destructive approach. She's usually proven right, [[{{Hypocrite}} but she is known to be just as reckless.]]
* RightWayWrongWayPair: Usually the Right Way to Sonic's spontaneous (and usually reckless) approach, especially in Season Two. [[NotSoAboveItAll She makes the occasional folly herself, however.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething
* SpotlightStealingSquad: She's used as a co-lead in ''every'' second season episode (absent in only one Antoine short). It's not rare for her to be Sonic's ''only'' team mate in some episodes.
* TheStrategist: This is her big role in the team. She makes the plans, the rest of the team carries those plans out.
* SurroundedByIdiots: More so in the second season, where [[{{Flanderization}} more emphasis is put on her competence over the other Freedom Fighters.]] She had to stop Sonic from [[NiceJobBreakingItHero endangering himself via arrogance]], or put up with Antoine or Dulcy's blundering much more often. This appears in the first season too, but is more subtle ([[NotSoAboveItAll and she is more prone to acting up herself]]).
* TeenGenius: Though Rotor may be the MrFixit of the group, Sally is no slouch when it comes to inventing machines herself. She's also an excellent hacker and a skilled strategist.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Bunnie's Girly Girl.
* TomboyPrincess: Being from royalty doesn't stop her from being a huge tomboy.
* TooCleverByHalf: Intelligent and resourceful, but occasionally competes with [[SmugSuper Sonic]] in terms of haughtiness.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Wears a blue jacket and blue boots. To add to that, she has blue eyes.
* {{Tsundere}}: She's a Type A with Sonic and Antoine and a Type B with pretty much everyone else in the Freedom Fighters.
* UngratefulBastard: Probably not an intentional case, but Sally failed to be remotely concerned about Cat's well being after he sacrificed himself for her, her adamance in finding a clue to her father's whereabouts ultimately [[NiceJobBreakingItHero leads to him being rescued too late.]]
* VocalDissonance: In spite of her appearance as a cute chipmunk barely in her teens, she has the voice of a mature young woman.
* WeakButSkilled: As noted in JackOfAllStats and Distressed Damsel, she's skilled but gets captured a lot.
* WetBlanketWife: Downplayed case. Sally's humorless, uptight and constantly on Sonic's back for showing off, but in a dystopian world where his recklessness often risks getting him robotocized or worse by an sadistic EvilOverlord, she's usually in the right to.
* WomenAreWiser: While she has some shortcomings, comparatively, she is almost always Sonic's moral and intellectual superior.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: With Sonic.

!!Antoine Depardieu
A coyote who was once a palace guard.
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/RobPaulsen

* BerserkButton: He will ''not'' let you get away with mangling French cooking. ''Especially'' if you try to make escargot... with margarine.
* ButtMonkey: All kinds of bad things happen to him, and it's all played for laughs.
* CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkeys: He has a French accent, tends to speak with near-French syntax, and has stereotypical "Frenchy" attitudes... and is a coward, a bungler, and the worst fighter in the group.
* ChildSoldier: He acts so much like a professional (if ineffectual) soldier that it's hard to remember he's supposed to be the same age as the rest of the group.
**Considering they are all teens or close in the present of the show, and it is shown in the time travel episode that they escaped as children, its more likely Antoine was slated to be trained as a royal guard, and might have even been in the cadet program when Robotnik took over, his cowardliness could stem from his lack of training, but in honor of the position he would have had, he goes along with the others on missions to protect the Princess, as he is the closest they have to a royal guard now. This is backed up by his over protectiveness of Sally in season one, and somewhat by the coat, and the boots he wears that seem a bit too big on him....was he playing dress up at the time of the attack?
* DirtyCoward: From time to time, but to most people he's the LovableCoward of the group.
* DumbBlonde: A RareMaleExample. His hair is dirty blonde, and he's certainly not the smartest member of the team.
* {{Flanderization}}: He was originally rather pompous and cowardly, but had some amount of lucidity and nobility. By Season Two however he is more or less a full time StrawLoser for Sonic, barely able to spend five seconds without saying or doing something stupid or narcissistic and acting like a full blown DirtyCoward.
* FreakOut: Antoine has one hell of a freakout in "The Odd Couple" where he is forced to share his house with Sonic for a night.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He can be a whiny asshole, but he always pulls through in the end.
* GratuitousFrench: Constant "Frenchisms" spill from his lips, as part of his obvious stereotyping.
* HopelessSuitor: To Sally.
* InterspeciesRomance: His unrequited crush on Sally.
* {{Leitmotif}}: He has his own theme tune in Season 2.
* TheLoad: He is incredibly cowardly and almost never contributes anything of value, yet for some reason they frequently bring him along on action missions.
* LovableCoward: When not an outright DirtyCoward anyway.
* NoRespectGuy: In season 2.
* PluckyComicRelief: In season 1.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: The star of the second season shorts. Also often Sonic's second team mate in missions.
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: In Warp Sonic. Antoine is Sonic's rival for Sally's affection.

!! Bunnie Rabbot
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/ChristineCavanaugh

A cyborg rabbit who filled the role of TheBigGuy in the FiveManBand.

* BadassAdorable: She's a cute (inching towards sexy) female bunny anthro with a SouthernBelle type accent... who also has a cybernetic arm and legs she can use to smash tanks into pieces.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with.]] In-Universe, Bunnie considers herself to be a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]] of this. Thanks to a partial [[UnwillingRoboticisation roboticization]], she is stuck with ArtificialLimbs, which she [[IJustWantToBeBeautiful utterly hates and would gladly be rid of]], despite [[CursedWithAwesome their]] [[SuperStrength utility]].
* TheBigGuy: In the first season, anyway, she's the go-to muscle for the Freedom Fighters.
* BoobsOfSteel: Well, she's not exactly ''stacked'', but she does have more cleavage than Sally does, and she's also the group's primary melee fighter.
* CoolBigSis: To both Sally and Tails.
* CursedWithAwesome: A victim of partial robotocization, which grants her amazing strength. She hates it.
* CuteBruiser: She's a cute-looking bunny rabbit with a sweet personality and a girlish disposition. She's also an amateur brawler strong enough to tear open fortified steel doors with her bare hands.
* {{Cyborg}}: Was partially roboticized, such that her left arm and lower torso are mechanical.
* DemotedToExtra: In Season Two.
* FauxActionGirl: Post {{Chickification}} in the second season.
* GirlyBruiser: She may have SuperStrength and be willing to bash robots into kibble, but she'd rather be doing more conventionally feminine stuff, and is very much the girly-girl of the team.
* GoodBadGirl: A G-rated version--she's flirty and wears a skimpy outfit and makeup, but a FemmeFatale she ain't.
* HeroesFightBarehanded: Thanks to cybernetic upgrades and martial arts skills, she needs no weapons to put the hurt on a ''tank.''
* HollywoodCyborg: Cybernetic arm and legs.
* HonoraryUncle: To Tails who calls her "Aunt Bunnie".
* {{Kiai}}: Always cries out loudly with each strike.
* KungFuKid: Somehow knows martial arts despite being a fugitive since she was 8 years old.
* NiceGirl: She's probably the nicest of the Freedom Fighters next to Rotor.
* OutOfFocus: She stays behind a lot more in the Second Season. Even the odd time she takes part she rarely acts as little more than [[TheLoad a generic teammate]].
* PunnyName: [[PlayboyBunny Bunnie]] [[HollywoodCyborg Rabbot]]
* SouthernBelle: Much more tomboyish than most examples.
* SuperStrength: Her metal arm gives her this.
* SweetHomeAlabama: She's got the accent and the mannerisms down pat.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Sally's Tomboy, ironically despite being the group's primary bruiser in the first season.

!! Rotor the Walrus
!!!!!!Voiced by Mark Ballou (Season 1), Cam Brainard (Season 2)

A Walrus who served as the team's [[TheSmartGuy smart guy]].

* {{Adorkable}}: Especially in early episodes.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Well, as much as they could get away with in a kids show, but Rotor prefers being alone and spends a little too much time on his niche, inventing things. His vocal inflections and overall social behavior are somewhat off as well.
* ArtEvolution: While several other characters go through minor design changes, Rotor's are most evident, gradually becoming chubbier and more anthropomorphic. He goes through at least two drastic design changes throughout the show's run (once after the pilot, another during the second season).
* DemotedToExtra: In season two.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Rotor has a goofier design with a purple color scheme in the pilot episode. Similar to the Sally example this would be utilized in the comics (though actually was kept as his permanent design in that media). His design would be changed again halfway through the show's run. His personality is also a lot more buffoonish in the pilot, having more a PluckyComicRelief role that Antoine and Dulcy would later usurp.
* GadgeteerGenius: He builds all of the cool toys that the Freedom Fighters use.
* GeniusBruiser: He may be more of a stay at home engineer type, but he's quite willing to throw his ample weight around if he needs to.
* MrFixIt: If the group needs something mechanical designed, invented or repaired, he's the guy they see.
* NiceGuy: One of the nicest characters the show has.
* NiceHat: It's red in the second season of the cartoon, and yellow in the pilot, first season and comics design.
* OutOfFocus: In season two.
* SameCharacterButDifferent: Rotor's design was given an overhaul twice over in the series.
* TheSmartGuy: He's the group's inventor, engineer, and general tech-wizard, whilst Sally and NICOLE handle tactics.
* WarmHeartedWalrus: He is a walrus, and he is not only loyal to the Freedom Fighters, but also one of the kindest characters in the show.

!! Dulcy the Dragon
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/CreeSummer

A [[InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons dragon]] who was introduced in season 2. She may not be the smartest member of the team, but she's willing to get in and bash bots all the same.

* AnIcePerson: She can fire streams of cold vapour out of her nostrils.
* CaptainCrash: She ''really'' needs to work on her landings.
* CousinOliver: Literally just showed up in the first episode of season two and everyone acted like she'd been there all along.
* GiantFlyer: She's the only flying Freedom Fighter, and so big that she can carry several of them on her body as she does.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: The theory behind her addition, anyway.
* LastOfHisKind [[spoiler: Thanks to Robotnik, she is quickly approaching this.]]
* MissingMom: Her mother, Sabina, was captured and roboticized.
* RememberTheNewGuy: She just suddenly appears in the second season premiere as if she was one of the Freedom Fighters the whole time. Much like the other Freedom Fighters, her back story wasn't given.

!! Uncle Chuck
!!!!!!Voiced by William Windom

Sonic's uncle who was roboticized when Sonic was very young.

* AndIMustScream: Like all roboticized Mobians, Chuck was fully aware of everything he was doing while under Robotnik's control, but was unable to stop himself.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Like all "Robians", he's compelled to obey Robotnik's directives, no matter what.
* CoolOldGuy: Part of the reason the team is so fond of him
* GadgeteerGenius: He's a very, very capable scientist and engineer.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: He delayed Robotnik's attempts to roboticize Sonic and his friends when they were children so they could escape, but he was caught and roboticized in the process.]]
* HonoraryUncle: Everyone refers to him as "Uncle Chuck".
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: He was pretty short compared to the younger King Max.
* TheMole: [[spoiler: After they manage to break his programming and compelled loyalty to Robotnik, he stays in Robotropolis so he can spy on Robotnik for the Freedom Fighters undetected.]]
* MortalityPhobia: [[spoiler: His motivation to build the Roboticizer.]]
* NiceGuy
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: He was the original inventor of the roboticizer, which was made to help old people live longer. Unfortunately, it had a side effect of wiping their minds clean and they had no will of their own, which is why Robotnik stole the idea from Chuck after he thought he destroyed the blueprints for it.]]
%%* OnlySaneMan
* PapaWolf: Sacrifices his well being repeatedly for the sake of Sonic and his comrades. He even stays as a spy in Robotropolis simply to help them fend of Robotnik.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: [[spoiler: At first.]]
%%* TheSmartGuy

!![[spoiler:Julian]] Robotnik
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/JimCummings

The BigBad, responsible for overthrowing the king of Mobotropolis, and converting the city into a heavily industrialized center. [[EvilOverlord He rules with an iron fist]], roboticizing the entire populace in order to quell any and all rebellion.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: In the second season, even his formerly [[SycophanticServant sycophantic]] nephew absolutely hates his guts.
* AndThereWasMuchRejoicing: Both the Freedom Fighters and Snively are quite glad once Robotnik's taken out of the picture.
* AdaptationalNameChange: His first name is actually ''Julian'' rather than "Ivo" of the games and other incarnations.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Robotnik is still a villain here, but is outright monstrous compared to his video game counterpart. Also in a stark comparison to the games, here Robotnik has basically won and all Sonic and friends can do is put a stop to whatever his current plan is, or at least cripple his tyranny little by little.
* AbusiveParents: Or Abusive Uncle in this case. He treats Snively like shit.
* AxeCrazy: Can be this at times, [[BerserkButton especially when angered.]] In the second season, [[{{Flanderization}} this almost becomes his default mode]] much to his [[StupidEvil detriment.]]
* BadassBaritone: Provided by Jim Cummings.
* BadassCape: He wears a yellow one.
* BadBoss: Frequently takes losses out on Snively, [[NeverMyFault even ones he had no direct responsibility for]]. He outright sentences Snively to die in their imploding lab out of fury of his final defeat in the show (ironically this act would end up saving Snively who escaped through safer means than him, [[LaserGuidedKarma while ensuring his own demise]]). Even in his better moods, his relationship with his nephew is not affectionate to say the least.
* BaldOfEvil: Naturally, there is not a single hair on his forehead. Interestingly, it seems he never had hair to begin with.
* BigBad: Very much so.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: They’re black pits with ominous [[RedEyesTakeWarning glowing red lights.]] It's directly implied they're cybernetic; the irises can light up like flashlights, as was shown in an episode when the power is knocked out and his room is plunged into darkness.
* CardCarryingVillain: [[DownplayedTrope Not as prominent]] as one would expect. He’s quite boastful of his evil [[PragmaticVillainy when it suits him,]] but otherwise he cares more about expanding his influence than bragging about how evil he is.
* TheComicallySerious: Robotnik has almost no sense of humor and thinks in rigid, concrete terms. As such, he has his moments of this trope every now and then. [[EstablishingCharacterMoment One such incident occurs in the pilot episode.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: His most comedic output is his occasionally snide wit, especially around Snively or Sonic.
-->'''Snively:''' I don't understand sir.
-->'''Robotnik:''' I know.
* EmperorScientist: He designed almost all of the machines in the entire setting, and rules the planet with a [[HollywoodCyborg literal]] iron fist.
* EvilOverlord: There's a reason the Freedom Fighters want him overthrown.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Deep voice? Check. Absolutely monstrous? Check.
* FantasticRacism: He thinks of Mobians as an [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman inferior species to humanity]], worthy only of subjugation. [[MisanthropeSupreme Not that he actually respects the only other human on the planet in any way]].
* FatBastard: He's definitely one of the bigger Robotniks, even larger than the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog incarnation, and every single fiber of his being is incredibly repulsive.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He can appear to be polite and gentlemanly, but don't let that fool you. He's notorious for his skills of deception and persuasion.
* ForTheEvulz: He gets a disturbing, almost lustful looking enjoyment every time he causes pain and suffering around him (it just makes him [[MemeticMutation "tingle all over"]]).
* HollywoodCyborg: His arm is a cybernetic prosthetic, [[spoiler: a result of Sonic knocking him over, with his hand landing in the Roboticizer.]] Also, as mentioned above, it's possible his eyes are artificial as well. He also appears to have cybernetic ears.
* {{Jerkass}}: When not being a diabolically malicious and calculating villain, Robotnik kills time engaging in petty abuse and insults, mostly directed towards Snively.
* KilledOffForReal: Heavily implied to be this in the [[GrandFinale Series Finale]]. [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope He's actually still alive.]]]]
** [[spoiler: Would have been subverted for the Third Season, where he would have been revealed to have survived the explosion and got teleported into the Void.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: Unlike most other counterparts of the doctor, Robotnik's actions are depicted in a very serious and sinister light, his comedic aspects being generally subtle and sparse. [[{{Flanderization}} The second season definitely softened this up,]] but not enough to reduce the impact of the trope.
* LargeHam: While not as extreme as his [[WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgeHog previous incarnation]], this Robotnik was still pretty hammy, with his heavy breathing, low voice, and long pauses. These qualities were [[{{Flanderization}} exaggerated further]] in the second season.
* LaserGuidedKarma: The climax of "The Doomsday Project", if not the entirety of it. As his lair gets torn apart by Sonic and Sally, a very frustrated Robotnik storms off into his only escape pod, spitefully refusing Snively access. The pod fails to escape and is caught in the energy blast with the rest of the lair, while Snively, having expected as much from his uncle, escaped fine with his own planned method of transport.
* ManipulativeBastard: Indeed! There's probably not a single character in the whole show that didn't get used by Robotnik.
** In fact, his whole use of [[UnwillingRoboticization roboticized Mobians]] as slave workers showcases this side of him nicely. Aside from the dark practicality of turning his enemies into mindlessly loyal robot slave-workers instead of just executing them, he can then use the love and loyalty of any escaped Mobians against them. Even if they don't succumb to the urge to try and "rescue" a Robian, who will then capture them for Robotnik, the Freedom Fighters ''can't'' use more dramatic methods of fighting against Robotnik's rule. After all, everyone knows that roboticization can be undone; with that in mind, how can Mobians countenance killing their unfortunate family, friends and loved ones by doing things like blowing up Robotnik's factories, even if that would impede Robotnik's empire far more than generator sabotage and virus uploads would?
* NoNonsenseNemesis: In Season One, Robotnik was plainly shown to be [[TheUnfettered completely without limitations.]] ''[[EstablishingCharacterMoment In his very first appearance]] in the LighterAndSofter [[{{Pilot}} pilot episode,]]'' it was shown very plainly that he actually ''would'' [[JustShootHim just kill]] or [[UnwillingRoboticization immediately roboticize]] any of his enemies at the first opportunity he got, [[https://youtu.be/a5G2ZB450CU?t=177 with no warning or scruples.]] In the DarkerAndEdgier episodes that followed, this trait was only magnified, resulting in him using any personality flaws and or feelings of attachment he could see in others as weapons against them. This is [[{{Flanderization}} not as prominent]] in Season Two (see StupidEvil), but still factors into his characterization late into the series.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Though this Robotnik boasts a far more sinister and fearsome demeanor, he couldn't go ''completely'' without comical moments. His fear-driven demeanor throughout "The Void" in particular, though [[JustifiedTrope completely justified]], is quite clownish.
* ObviouslyEvil: Robotnik somehow landed a good name for himself in his early days to achieve his conquest, despite his appearance and demeanour making him less than shrewd about how truly sinister he was.
* PetTheDog: He dotes over Cluck devotedly in Season One. In Season Two, Cluck is inexplicably gone, removing Robotnik's single redeeming aspect.
* {{Pride}}: While this version of the doctor is genuinely calculating and dangerous, his FatalFlaw is still his arrogant over assurance he is invincible. As the series progresses, he starts to display more foolish and delusional aspects, and ultimately his own downfall is caused primarily by careless oversights and blunt refusal to accept any possibility that Sonic was capable of defeating him.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: The red lights in his eyes [[GlowingEyesOfDoom flare whenever he gets pissed]].
* RedRightHand: His roboticized left arm and cybernetic eyes.
* StupidEvil: [[{{Flanderization}} In Season 2.]] While in his past he was able to [[PragmaticEvil make lengthy charades to maintain his plans for power]], in Season Two, Robotnik just can't resist [[KickTheDog Kicking The Dog]] at the most inappropriate times.
* TheSociopath: A very chilling, and very accurate example. Robotnik only cares about himself and his empire. Everything else is just something for him to use or destroy.
* TroubledAbuser: While Robotnik was never nice to begin with, a long period as Naugus' tormented underling likely only exacerbated his thrill in punishing and bullying his subordinates, especially Snively who ''laughed'' at his abuse at the hands of Naugus.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: He overthrew the king and turned Mobius into a CrapsackWorld, which the Freedom Fighters are trying to undo.
* UnwillingRoboticisation : His modus operandi. Also the TropeNamer ''and'' TropeCodifier.
* VillainousBreakdown: "I ''hate'' that hedgehog. I hate him! ''I hate him''! ''HATE HIM''! HATE! HATE! ''HATE!!'' '''''HAAAAATTTTEEEEEEEE'''''!!!!"
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: He was this during the GreatOffscreenWar, using his technology to improve the quality of life and fight a war for the King... until he was able to [[MilitaryCoup maneuver himself into power with his robot army just after the war ended]].
* WhosLaughingNow: His abuse towards Snively can be seen as this, given the latter's heckling over his own abuse from Naugus. In flashback, even when transformed into a crow, you can tell [[DeathGlare he's dwelling on how he'll get back at the little runt]].
* WorthyOpponent: Despite his grudge against Sonic, he considers him his "most worthy adversary". [[spoiler: When it seems he's finally about to roboticize him,]] he admits that he's almost sorry that it's over.
* WouldHurtAChild: He's perfectly willing to harm children as seen the {{Pilot}} and again in "Blast to the Past". He already has roboticized almost every child on the planet.
* XanatosSpeedChess: He's very good at this.

!! Snively
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/CharlieAdler

Robotnik's nephew and right-hand man. [[BadBoss Often used as the doctor's punching bag]], Snively has gained a conniving and ambitious personality intent on overthrowing his uncle.

* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Thought Naugus' abusive spells on Robotnik were hilarious. Unfortunately for him, when Robotnik took over, he made sure he got [[WhosLaughingNow a full taste of what he'd been through]].
* BaldOfEvil: He's bald and he's cruel.
* ButtMonkey: Starting in Season 2 he was regularly used as a punching bag by Robotnik and often treated as a joke by the Freedom Fighters. Granted, in that season [[TheStarscream his true conniving traits were shown.]]
* TheDogBitesBack: Beyond his implied plans to betray Robotnik throughout Season 2, culminating in him usurping Robotnik's place as ruler of Robotropolis after Robotnik's apparent death, it was planned that he would eventually team up with the Freedom Fighters to defeat Naugus and Robotnik alike for Season 3.
* DirtyCoward: [[MeaningfulName As you'd expect]].
* EnemyMine: In the planned Third Season, according to WordOfGod, after Naugus deposed him and usurped his place, he would have made a reluctant partnership with the Freedom Fighters to stop the EvilSorcerer and the returned Robotnik.
* GagNose: He has an exaggeratedly long, pointy nose.
* HairTodayGoneTomorrow: Apparently, the rush of wind from a time-travelling Sonic blasting by tore most of the hair from his head, leaving him with just a few long strands poking wildly out of his scalp.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Snively is a treacherous weasel whose ruthlessness only pales compared to his uncle. However in action he is a pitiful, bumbling coward that Sonic and even the highly cautious Sally have problems viewing as a serious threat. He's got a terrifying brain, but in terms of brawn, you can tell by his spindly, twig-like physique he's a pushover, and would be quite justified in calling him spineless.
* KarmaHoudini: Despite being Robotnik's loyal lackey, he gets away from the rift in reality that swallows his uncle, giving him the chance to take over Robotropolis himself.
* LargeHam: He's voiced by Charlie Adler after all.
* LaughablyEvil: Not much more pleasant than Robotnik, though far more blundering and goofy.
* LaughingMad: At the end of the finale, at which point it appears that he's gone stark raving bonkers.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: While often seen as far more pathetic than Robotnik by the Freedom Fighters, he actually gotten closer to discovering and conquering Knothole than his uncle did. In the planned Third Season he would have briefly taken control of Robotropolis, though he would ultimately lose control later on.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: As seen [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gmd0HnwlpQE here]].
* ServileSnarker: Often makes snide remarks about his uncle behind his back, especially in Season 2.
* {{Slimeball}}: A nice guy, he ain't.
* TheStarscream: Zigzagged. He constantly grumbles over having to serve the Doctor, but doesn't actually attempt to harm him. By the Second Season he has blatantly come to resent his uncle's abuse and makes a few shrewd plans behind his back (he once attempted an attack on Knothole while Robotnik was gone, as well as making alterations to his base that would ultimately save his life when it was destroyed). [[spoiler: He simply plays along until Robotnik is electrocuted in the final episode, then is seen donning his uncle's trademark yellow cape.]] He does, however, resemble Starscream in voice, especially considering his voice is done by Creator/CharlieAdler.
* SycophanticServant: In season One, he is far less hateful towards his uncle and even seems to enjoy getting his rare praise. It's [[ImpliedTrope easily inferred]] that Robotnik's BadBoss traits eventually resulted in a case of BrokenPedestal, causing him to hate his uncle and want to get rid of him.
* VillainTeamUp: It was planned that he'd do this with Naugus in the early part of Season 3, only for Naugus to betray him.
* YesMan: Enforced. Robotnik made clear Snively's sole purpose is to fulfil the doctor's schemes and compliment his brilliance. Any attempt Snively made at contradicting him or so much as indirectly implying his insight was not perfect tended to be met with violent rebukes.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Robotnik attempts this indirectly in "The Doomsday Project", leaving him to die in his imploding base out of spite. Snively however had predicted as much from his uncle and had made his own methods of escape.
-->'''Robotnik:''' Only room for one, Snively! ''*closes escape pod*''
-->'''Snively:''' ''*flees via a secret tunnel*'' You don't give me enough credit, Julian!

!! King Acorn
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/TimCurry

Former King of Mobotropolis and father of Princess Sally. Deposed by Robotnik and exiled to the Void.

* AllThereInTheManual: Again, the family surname Acorn is only stated in the show's bible, while the comics gave him the first name, Maximilian. In the show itself, he is known only as "the King".
* CoolOldGuy: Not as old as Uncle Chuck, but this still counts.
* DefiantToTheEnd: His last words to Robotnik before being sent into the Void where: "You'll regret this Julian, you'll regret this!"
* FirstNameBasis: He refuses to recognize the name "Dr. Robotnik," calling him "Julian" up to the very end.
* TheGoodKing: He was a benevolent and much-loved monarch, when he held the throne.
* LargeHam: Cause it's Tim Curry, duh!
* NiceGuy: Like father, like daughter.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Following the end of the Great War, a complacent King Acorn left all the city's artillery in the hands of Robotnik, not once thinking he would use this power to overthrow him.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething
* SealedGoodInACan: Spending all those years in the Void has affected his body; If he's outside of it for too long, he begins to [[TakenForGranite slowly crystallise]].

!! Naugus
!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/MichaelBell

A wizard from the Void. Though he was antagonistic only towards Robotnik, he was slated to become season three's BigBad.

* AffablyEvil: he seems surprisingly friendly and easy-going when the Freedom Fighters meet him. However, he's just as ruthlessly ambitious as Robotnik, and willing to do anything in order to get his revenge on Robotnik.
* BalefulPolymorph: He can do this to people, and enjoys tormenting Robotnik by transforming him into ridiculous shapes.
* BigBad: Was meant to be this for Season 3.
* EnemyMine: While Sonic was initially mad about being tricked into freeing him, Naugus points out that Sonic should be glad he's released since he's going to get rid of [[BigBad Robotnik]] and is even nice enough to let Sonic go back and rescue his friends from the Void. WordOfGod is that he'd have become more antagonistic towards the Freedom Fighters in Season 3.
* EvilSorcerer: His Modus Operandi.
* KnightOfCerebus: Implied as such, had his role as BigBad in the Third Season ever took place. This is the guy who makes Robotnik ''[[OOCIsSeriousBusiness quiver in terror]]''.
* SealedEvilInACan: Naugus spent years trapped in the Void. He finally manages to escape once, but willingly returns once he realizes that spending all those years in the Void has affected his body; If he's outside of it for too long, he begins to [[TakenForGranite slowly crystallise]].
* TheUnfettered: He wants the same thing the Freedom Fighters want: to kill [[EvilOverlord Robotnik.]] The problem is, he will do absolutely anything to do it, with zero concern for anything that gets in his way.
* VillainTeamUp: It was planned that, in the Third Season, he would initially do this with Snively (hence the ominous red eyes beside Snively in TheStinger for the show), as well as bringing along Robotnik as his tormented slave. However, he'd then betray Snively and take over himself, forcing Snively into an EnemyMine with the Freedom Fighters.
