[[folder:Sabrina Spellman]]
[[quoteright:260:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sabrina3_4289.jpg]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Creator/MelissaJoanHart[[labelnote:Foreign voice actors]]Vanessa Acosta [season 1] Creator/XochitlUgarte [season 2 onwards] (Latin Spanish dub); Eva Díez (European Spanish dub); Rie Ishizuka (Japanese dub); Creator/SarahMarot (European French dub); Sonja Reichelt (German dub); Creator/PerlaLiberatori (Italian dub)[[/labelnote]]

----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Sabrina's hair in the comics is traditionally platinum blond and in a bob style.
* AdaptationNameChange: In the TV movie, she was Sabrina Sawyer.
* AlliterativeName: Her name and surname both have "S".
* AthleticallyChallenged: As Sabrina herself says in "Sweet and Sour Victory", she's terrible at sports, even in the easy ones like badminton, that's why she used her magic to win a Kung Fu contest. In "The Pom Pom Incident", when Valerie convices her to try out for the cheerleading squad, [[StrawLoser Valerie]] does surprisingly well, while Sabrina does all the moves wrong, despite trying her best.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: To the Spellman family, as she's the youngest and most inexperienced. In the final season, she's annoyed when Morgan and Roxie start treating her this way, as they remind her of her two aunts.
* BadassAdorable: Cute blonde teen girl, powerful witch with magical powers.
* BalloonBelly: Twice:
** In season three after Sabrina gets addicted pancakes, she gorged herself so much that her butt got stuck in the doorway.
** In season four a sleazy salesman enchants her mirror to make her look overweight so she would buy his diet milkshake powder.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's one of nicest, friendliest girls you could ever meet, but do not underestimate her.
* BookSmart: Despite being a clumsy NaiveEverygirl, Sabrina is notably good at school. She writes for the school newspaper, and also excels at math and science.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Has her moments. At her worst she falls into the ItsAllAboutMe territory.
* BrilliantButLazy: Not with academia or her jobs (she's generally very hard working, career driven and intelligent), but when it comes to her magic. She's a very powerful and talented witch, but often doesn't want to put in any more work on anything than she absolutely ''has'' to, which results in sloppy or often disastrous results when it comes to her magic. Especially in the earlier seasons she causes a lot of trouble for herself by constantly trying to do things in a quicker and easier way.
* ButtMonkey: In several episodes, when she's picked on by Libby or suffers bad luck. Sometimes though she really brings it on herself.
* CatchPhrase: "Woo-hoo!", "Gotta go!"
* ClassPrincess: In "Now You See Her, Now You Don't", she's elected queen of the Snowflake ball, and she later learns that the other students voted for her because she's nice and down to earth. In another episode, Gordie tells her that she's always "so perfect, [[RightForTheWrongReasons almost like you weren't even human]]". Ironically, her "perfection" is also the reason why the alternative Roxie dislikes her during her first day at college ("You were the top of your class at high school, had a cute boyfriend and actually enjoyed extra-curricular activities"), though she later starts to accept Sabrina after learning that she also has her own quirks, and she's not as "perfect" as she appears.
* CuteWitch: Or HotWitch, since she's a teenager.
* DeadpanSnarker: A lot of her snark is SelfDeprecation, but will snark at other characters too, in pretty much every episode.
* DitzyGenius: Sabrina is a model student and eventually gets her degree in journalism. Yet she can't help but get herself in trouble in several episodes (and going to her aunts for help).
* DudeMagnet: She has many guys falling for her over the years including Harvey, Dashiell, Roland, Josh, Kevin, Aaron, and others. During her first days in college, she is reluctant to start a new relationship (after her break-up with Harvey), despite all the numerous suitors who were asking her out.
* EvilTwin: Katrina. All the Spellmans have an EvilTwin.
* GenerationXerox: She is BookSmart and interested in science like Aunt Zelda, while also having the impulsive GenkiGirl personality of Aunt Hilda (and most of the time, she acts more like Hilda). In the episode where her aunts want to live in separate homes, she has a hard time choosing between them, because she likes both studying with Aunt Zelda and having fun with Aunt Hilda.
* GenkiGirl: Very bubbly, cute and outgoing and pretty much the poster child of the [[PluckyGirl Plucky]] GenkiGirl.
* GirlNextDoor: Despite being blonde and attractive, Sabrina is just your average every-day girl. In one episode she learns that the other students like her because she's so down-to-earth and friendly.
* GoGetterGirl: Or at least, she becomes this as she devotes herself to her ambitions of being a journalist.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Her mother is a mortal and her father is a warlock.
* HighSchoolSweethearts: With Harvey, her high school boyfriend and first love. They even have a LastMinuteHookup.
* IneptMage: Especially in the early years, she was only able to mess up with her magic in every episode.
* InvincibleIncompetent: Sabrina went seven years without ever learning even one or two simple spells she could reliably not mess up. Notable in that there usually was no villain except for her mastery of this trope alternately causing and fixing problems.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Sabrina is often quite self-centered and incapable of seeing the plights of others because she's too wrapped up in herself. This occasionally makes her come off as rather callous and petty -- especially when she uses magic to dish out {{Disproportionate Retribution}}s -- but it can largely be attributed to the fact that she is a teenager. When she ''does'' see that others are unhappy she'll do her best to to help them [[UnwantedAssistance whether they want her to or not]].
* TheKirk: Towards Hilda and Zelda.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The sweet, cheerful Light Feminine to Libby's snobby, conceited Dark Feminine. Libby is also dark-haired in contrast to Sabrina's HairOfGoldHeartOfGold.
* MeaningfulName: '''Spell'''man.
* MissingMom: Sabrina's mother is mortal and is not allowed to have contact with her. She [[spoiler:turns into a ball of wax]] if she sees Sabrina without approval from the Witches Council. [[spoiler: In the series finale, the Witches Council does allow Sabrina's mom to attend her wedding, but demands that one of the aunts be temporarily turned into wax. Hilda volunteered Zelda and she is turned into a red candle.]]
* MoralityPet: Ironically she's this for ''her pet'' Salem who has a soft spot for her and secretly calls her "Sabreeny".
* MostWritersAreWriters: Her favourite subject is English, and she writes for the school paper, later majoring in journalism in college. One episode uniquely draws a distinction between journalism and fiction writing, as Sabrina struggles to give her stories good CharacterDevelopment.
* MuggleMageRomance: In addition to being the result of one such union, Sabrina develops a romance with the {{Muggle}} Harvey.
* NaiveEverygirl: She's not shy, but can be insecure at times and is an overall idealistic NiceGirl often bullied by the AlphaBitch.
* NiceGirl: Despite her tendency to mess things up, and her sometimes self-centered nature leading her to be unthinkingly cruel, Sabrina is well–intentioned and sweet-natured. She wants everyone to get along and often goes out of her way to help or placate people.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Sabrina's magic often backfires on her even when she uses it to help other people. One example is the episode where Valerie is humiliated at school, and Sabrina casts a spell to save her from embarrassment. She succeeds, but this also causes Sabrina being humiliated instead, with her face literally turnig bright red, because Valerie's embarrassment was simply transferred to Sabrina herself.
* OfficialCouple: With Harvey. A file from the ''X-Files'' website later confirms that Aunt Irma - you know, the crazy lady with a temper that likes turning people into things - officiated the common-law wedding of Harvey and Sabrina and that they later lived in a house outside of Westbridge.
* PluckyGirl: Definitely. She's always optimistic and never gives up.
* PowerFloats: Starts levitating in her sleep on her DangerousSixteenthBirthday.
* PubertySuperpower: Sabrina's powers manifest when she's the right age.
* TookALevelInBadass: Including the episode "Sweet and Sour Victory".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hilda Spellman]]
[[quoteright:228:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sabrina_hilda.png]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Creator/CarolineRhea[[labelnote:Foreign voice actors]]Dulce María Romay [season 1], Creator/DianaPerez [season 2 onwards] (Latin Spanish dub); Pepa Castro (European Spanish dub); Sakiko Uran (Japanese dub); Creator/MaikDarah (European French dub); Katrin Fröhlich (German dub); Chiara Salerno (Italian dub)[[/labelnote]]
----
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: In the comics and the pilot movie, she was the responsible aunt, while Zelda was the ditzy one.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In the comics she was a typical witch - ugly, warty, with the standard long robe and pointed hat. She was also a [[AdaptationDyeJob redhead]] and flat chested.
* AdaptationalCurves: Unlike her {{UsefulNotes/Pettanko}} comic counterpart, she has a softer and curvier figure.
* AllWorkVsAllPlay: All Play to Zelda's All Work.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Make the pantheon ''collapse'' when Dell left her at the alter. She's also able to ''successfully wield dynamite without killing herself or blowing up the house.'' Seems that being dangerous when ticked off runs between the sisters and their niece. She was once also a part of Salem's plans for world domination. The reason he lives with the Spellmans was part of her punishment, as she was sentenced to be his caretaker, in lieu of prison.
* BookDumb: In contrast to Zelda, she's a not very educated, fun-loving slacker.
* ButtMonkey: She is more fun than Zelda and gets her fair share of unfair moments.
* CoolAunt: Zelda is the serious aunt, Hilda is the "funny" aunt.
* DeadpanSnarker: Probably the snarkiest one, next to Salem.
* ExpansionPackPast: She and Zelda were shown to be around in the middle ages and the Renaissance.
* {{Flanderization}}: Hilda gets Flanderized from being the slightly more easy going of the two aunts to being a ditzy slacker. The best example is her music career: she goes from being a skilled orchestral violinist in the first season to having to be nagged into doing any practicing at all by her sister in the third. It's implied at one point that she only became a violinist because of her mother and Hilda's increasing lack of interest was her being sick of doing something she didn't want.
* {{Foil}}: To Zelda, as she is the more irresponsible one.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Foolish to Zelda's Responsible.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: Zelda mentions she's still surprised [[spoiler:Hilda turned out to be the good twin.]]
* HotWitch: Zelda is more conventionally good-looking, but Hilda is still an attractive woman.
* MeaningfulName: '''Spell'''man.
* TheMcCoy: Tends to do things without thinking.
* NotGoodWithRejection: She once fancied a man who didn't love her back. Her solution was to [[CrystalPrison imprison]] him in a ring.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She and Zelda are both in their mid-600s.
* PutOnABus: In the last season, along with Zelda.
* QuirkyCurls: In contrast to Zelda, who is much less quirky and has straight hair.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Born in 1351.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red to Zelda's Blue.
* SiblingYinYang: She's ditzy and easygoing, while Zelda is serious and mature.
* TheUnfavourite: A plot point in a season 2 episode where Hilda complains about being mistreated by her mom in the past and she feels like Zelda was always the favorite child.
* {{Womanchild}}: Due to her easygoing and fun-loving personality, sometimes she's even more immature than Sabrina.
* WomanScorned: Men who displease her tend to suffer gruesome fates. She once dated a man who didn't really listen to her so she cast a spell which caused him to [[BodyHorror grow extra ears all over his head.]] Zelda also relates a story about a man named Ben who once disappointed her, the end result being she transformed him into the [[ForcedTransformation Big Ben clocktower.]] And during the Renaissance she met a man who didn't love her back. So she [[CrystalPrison imprisoned him in a ring]] for the next 500 years with no sign of ever releasing him, even though he now claims he's changed his mind about her.

[[folder:Zelda Spellman]]
[[quoteright:238:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sabrina_zelda.png]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Creator/BethBroderick[[labelnote:Foreign voice actors]]Rebeca Manríquez [season 1], María Teresa Aviña [season 2 onwards] (Latin Spanish dub); María Julia Díaz (European Spanish dub); Creator/ToshikoFujita (Japanese dub); Creator/BlancheRavalec (European French dub); Dagmar Dempe (German dub); Barbara Castracane (Italian dub)[[/labelnote]]
----
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: In the comics and the pilot movie, she was the ditzy aunt, while Hilda was the responsible one.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Same deal as Hilda except she was slightly less ugly and overweight.
* AdaptationDyeJob: She traditionally has green hair in the comics, though adaptations almost never have it green.
* AllWorkVsAllPlay: All Work to Hilda's All Play.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When Salem is put in danger, she and Hilda go to rescue him. Zelda proves herself to be ''very dangerous'' when they do so. Seems that being dangerous when ticked off runs between the sisters and their niece.
* TheComicallySerious: The most serious character, but she has her funny moments too.
* CoolAunt: Along with Hilda, but in a different way. Zelda is the serious aunt, Hilda is the "funny" aunt.
* DeadpanSnarker: Less so than Hilda.
* ExpansionPackPast: Show to have been around during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. She was also mentioned to having been married to a Musician in one episode.
* {{Foil}}: To Hilda, as she is the more rational and responsible one.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Responsible to Hilda's Foolish.
* GeniusesHaveMultiplePhDs: Aunt Zelda brags that she has three [=PhDs=] and is generally an expert on physics and chemistry. Unlike most examples, Zelda actually could pull this off, as she's a centuries-old witch; as such, she has the time to devote entire decades of her life to getting advanced degrees.
* HotWitch: ''Really''. She's aware of it and often takes pride in her combination of beauty and brains.
* MeaningfulName: '''Spell'''man.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She and Hilda are both in their mid-600s.
* OnlySaneMan: Compared to Hilda, Sabrina and Salem, she's definitely the closest to being the voice of reason.
* PutOnABus: In the last season, along with Hilda.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Born in 1344.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Hilda's Red.
* SiblingYinYang: She's serious and mature, while Hilda is ditzy and easygoing.
* TheSpock: Thinks more with her head.
* TeamMom: When Sabrina officially moved in with her aunts, Zelda took on the role of the disciplinarian.
* TheUnfavourite: At the end of the Mother's Day episode both Hilda and Zelda come to the conclusion that their sister Vesta was their mother's favorite daughter.
* WeightWoe: She has this in the episode "Now You See Her, Now You Don't" when she was bringing clean laundry to Sabrina's room, looked in the mirror, and saw that her butt was "The size of Manhattan." However, the mirror was cursed by an enchanted salesman trying to sell more of his weight loss product to Sabrina.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: Went out with Principal Kraft, of all people. She was even willing to ''marry'' him, much to Hilda and Sabrina's horror.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Salem Saberhagen]]
[[quoteright:163:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salemthecat_4052.png]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Creator/NickBakay[[labelnote:Foreign voice actors]]Creator/JesseConde [season 1], Pablo Gorozpe [season 2 onwards] (Latin Spanish dub); Jesús Rodríguez (European Spanish dub); Hisanori Ogura (Japanese dub); Creator/PatrickPrejean (Euoprean French dub); Frank Engelhardt (German dub); Giovanni Petrucci (Italian dub)[[/labelnote]]

"My name is Mr. Saberhagen. But you can call me Mr. Saberhagen."
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the comics he was little more than a pet cat who occasionally had human thoughts. The series changed him into [[AscendedExtra a more active character]] making him a once-human warlock who had been transformed into a cat as punishment for attempted world conquest.
* AdaptationalWimp: In the comics, Salem had a fair bit of magic of his own and could pull off some impressive feats. In the TV series he has no extraordinary abilites at all, save for being able to talk. This of course ties into his altered backstory, as he ''used'' to be a powerful warlock but was turned into a powerless cat as punishment for his crimes.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Salem was traditionally a red cat in the comics. Due to the success of the show, the later comics made him a black cat.
* AffablyEvil: Despite his megalomaniac desires for world domination, he's generally friendly -- if sarcastic and mischievous.
* AlliterativeName: '''Sa'''lem '''Sa'''berhagen.
* AmbiguouslyBi: It is hinted, several times during the series, that Salem may in fact be bisexual, having odd crushes on various males, including Harvey Kinkle and Frankie Avalon. ''Salem and Juliette'' also has him arranging six dates; though he tells Sabrina that he's going out with six ladies, one of those dates is a man.
* AntiVillain: The NobleDemon type.
* AscendedExtra: He was a fairly minor character in the original comics. It was the TV series that not only turned him from a silent NearlyNormalAnimal into a full-fledged TalkingAnimal with a human backstory, but also turned him into the major character and Sabrina's most constant companion that he's known as today. He's the only character other than Sabrina to appear in every single episode of the show, plus the two TV movies.
* BadassAdorable: Well, he looks like a normal, innocent black cat.
* BeardOfEvil: While otherwise [[TheFaceless obscured]], in a flashback he clearly sported a beard while he was plotting world domination.
* BeenThereShapedHistory: He's boasted about giving Patrick Henry the slogan "Give me liberty or give me death!" and claims credit for John F. Kennedy's close 1960 election win.
* BeneathTheMask: When a giantess is threatening to eat Sabrina, Salem snaps in genuine anger, "Back off, lady!" Then he catches himself and continues in a jovial tone, "It's the 90s! [[SoLastSeason Nobody]] eats ''mortals'' anymore!"
* BigBrotherMentor: To Sabrina. Not exactly "big brother", but he's actually much older than Sabrina and often gives her (good or bad) advice.
* BigEater: Food is one of his great passions in life. [[StockAnimalDiet Fish]] is a great favorite, but he'll snack on just about anything if he's hungry -- by his own admission, he eats when he's happy ''and'' when he's upset.
* BigNo: He often yells "No" when he's upset (when he discovers his mother is allergic to cats) or embarrassed (Sabrina mentioning she saw him singing in the mirror).
* BreakoutCharacter: Easily the most memorable and recognizable character on the show, apart from Sabrina herself, of course.
* ButtMonkey: He takes a ''lot'' of abuse from the world in general and the Spellmans in particular, though he's often asking for it.
* CatchPhrase:
** ''"Mean!"'' Usually said whenever Sabrina, Hilda, or Zelda won't allow him to do something he wants.
** "Geh?!" when surprised or scared.
* CatsAreMagic: He was originally a warlock, but was transformed into a cat as punishment for trying to take over the world.
* CatsAreMean: {{Inverted|trope}}. He was turned into a cat because he tried to TakeOverTheWorld.
* CatsAreSnarkers: A perfect example of the trope, though we don't know if he was already snarky before becoming a cat.
* CoolCat: Salem is almost as cool as he thinks he is.
* DeadpanSnarker: Better known for his sarcastic one-liners.
* DistressedDude: Every so often, mostly by getting in over his very small and physically helpless head. A kid tried to keep him in season one, and in season five he accidentally talked before a delivery guy (who then wanted to sell the talking animal for a lot of money) had left.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Despite describing his mother as incredibly strict (she sent him to a military school [[DisproportionateRetribution because he was wearing sandals while dining]]), and despite being very scared of how she might react upon learning of his crimes, he still likes her enough to leave messages or gifts for Mothers' Day, and cries when it turns out she's [[PlotAllergy allergic to cats]] and needs to get shots in order to visit him.
* EvilRedhead: In his previous warlock body.
* TheFaceless: On the few occasions where we see Salem as a man (either via flashback or a temporary magic spell), his face is blocked. He's played by his voice actor Nick Bakay, though.
* ForcedTransformation: For his crimes, he was sentenced by the council to live in the body of a cat for a century. [[spoiler: This is actually a rather light sentence, given that Warlocks can live for many millennia.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Downplayed. He's the ButtMonkey and will almost always snark when the ladies are in a really bad mood, so he has a tendency to get on their last nerve. But if he's in trouble or genuinely upset, Sabrina will always help out, and he gets plenty of scritches no matter what.
* FreudianSlip:
--> '''(to his followers)''': Follow me and I promise I will be the most benevolent dictator the world has ever seen! ({{beat}}) Did I say dictator? I meant ''leader''.
* TheGadfly: Even when he's not scheming, he simply likes to cause trouble.
* {{Greed}}: His main, and in many ways defining, flaw. No matter what he has, he's never satisfied and always wants ''more''. This is what most often lands him in trouble, and also why good things never last for him-- when given an inch, he can never resist trying to take the entire mile, no matter how bad an idea it is.
* HarmlessVillain: He's always played for laughs and his attempt to TakeOverTheWorld was thwarted pathetically easily (some guys showed up and arrested him, at which point he starts ''sobbing''). But see NotSoHarmlessVillain below.
* HiddenDepths: Salem solved his family's secret with only two clues. He was deemed competent enough to be given a go as Sabrina's family secret mentor.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Very greedy, selfish, and power hungry, and very much PlayedForLaughs.
* IKnowMortalKombat: His first step towards world domination was to take over Madagascar, and his whole reasoning is that it works in TabletopGame/{{Risk}}.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's selfish, self-centered, and still wants to take over the world... but he does have a heart. It's obvious he really cares about Sabrina (and deep down also Hilda and Zelda).
* LazyBum: He's a lazy cat most of the time.
--> '''Salem''': Dogs guard; cats watch... and judge.
%%* ManipulativeBastard: Sometimes.
* MeaningfulName: Named after the town in Massachusetts where the infamous witch trials took place. He also shares his last name with Creator/FredSaberhagen, a major fantasy author.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: Even though Salem wasn't originally a cat, and his general personality seems to be fairly unchanged from his human days, he still displays a lot of typical cat traits. He enjoys being petted and played with, and has been known to eat the occasional mouse (in the animated series he gets indignant when Sabrina implies that he'd eat a mouse, pointing out that he's not a real cat, but a warlock in cat form-- but he ''still eats the mouse''). Also, in one of the comics, he actually turned back into a human for a while, but still behaves like a cat out of habit (e.g. eating directly from his plate, playing with wool, and sleeping all day long).
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Salem may be played for laughs, but he's not as harmless as he appears:
** He's been very involved in politics, admitting to giving Patrick Henry the slogan "Give me liberty or give me death!".
** Another episode sees Salem claim credit for Kennedy's close 1960 election win, saying he was the one who arranged for dead electors to be listed in Chicago.
** In "Salem, the Boy", put into Gordie's body, Salem very easily sets up Mr. Kraft for a presidential run.
** The other-realm judge almost condemns Sabrina to death for putting the world as ripe for Salem's taking.
** At some point, Salem attempted to conquer Poland.
** In the season 4 opener episode, Salem uses his connections to ''start a civil war on Pluto''. It's all to ensure that Sabrina's diplomat father is called away from Paris, so Sabrina will be able to continue living with Salem and her aunts.
* OddFriendship: With Harvey in later seasons, based on their shared love of sports and masculine films like ''Rambo''.
* OnlySaneMan: After a while, Salem develops into this role, often suggesting that Sabrina ask her aunts about the magical problem of the week or reminding her what had happened previously when she used her magic to fix something.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: He's actually a 500-year-old warlock.
* ShipperOnDeck: He clearly seemed to think Sabrina and Harvey were meant for each other. This is cemented in later seasons, where he and Harvey develop an OddFriendship.
* ShoutOut: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBVo0s4t95w According]] to Nick Bakay, Salem's beloved sobbing was an homage to Creator/BertLahr and [[Film/TheWizardOfOz his iconic performance as the Cowardly Lion]] (albeit in a higher register).
* SnarkyNonHumanSidekick: A sarcastic Talking Cat to Sabrina.
* TakeOverTheWorld: And as a punishment he was transformed into a...
* TalkingAnimal: Specifically, a talking cat. And despite being a human, sometimes Salem acts like he is ''really'' an actual cat. See TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody above.
* TokenEvilTeammate: He's still scheming and hoping to someday take over the world. Since he's a cat with no magic powers, however, his plans are usually limited to taking advantage of others in petty ways.
* {{Troll}}: Has moments of this, particularly with Sabrina, though she often retaliates. One time, being a GIFT when playing online chess got him into trouble when one of the players he insulted came looking for him.
* VerbalTic: "Gyeeeh?" whenever he's surprised or shocked. His characteristic sob when things don't go his way might also count.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Hilda and (to a lesser extent) Zelda. They drive each other nuts on a regular basis and are always sniping, but on rare occasions they do show that they care for one another. Hilda was actually one of his followers; they drive each other nuts because ''her'' punishment was to look after him.

----
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the comics he has black hair.
* BigManOnCampus: Handsome, athletic and very popular.
* BookDumb: He doesn't do too well in school.
* TheBusCameBack: Left the show after Season Four, but made a handful of cameo appearances in Season Five, before he returned as a regular character in Season Six.
* ButtMonkey: constantly has terrible things happen to him due to his relationship with Sabrina whether it's becoming pregnant or being transformed into a hideous man-beast.
* CommutingOnABus: In the college years, after he breaks up with Sabrina and later comes back as a recurring character.
* DumbJock: He's a jock who likes football, but definitely not very smart.
* FirstGirlWins: Gender Flipped version. Harvey is Sabrina's first boyfriend and love interest on the show. They elope together at the end of the series.
* ForcedTransformation: Well, being involved with a witch it's kind of a drawback. He's been turned into a frog, a beast, a dog, a bowling pin, etc. etc. all due to supernatural shenanigans. Thankfully being a mortal, he never remembers the magic he's fallen under, [[spoiler: that is until Sabrina uses up her limit of spells on him.]]
* GiveGeeksAChance: A rare example of a female geek with a male hottie. Sabrina is the unpopular, science and math loving girl who ends up with popular jock Harvey. (Although most female geeks don't look like Creator/MelissaJoanHart, Maxim covergirl.)
* HighSchoolSweethearts: With Sabrina, his high school girlfriend. They even have a LastMinuteHookup.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: In the first season, he's oblivious to Libby's AlphaBitch ways and seriously thinks that she is a nice person, just because she's nice to him.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Occasionally he can be ''extremely'' clueless, but his heart is in the right place.
* LovableJock: His friends on the football team also seem nice enough.
* MuggleMageRomance: Develops one with Sabrina.
* NiceGuy: Not the brightest boy, but a nice person and ''far'' from being a JerkJock.
* OddFriendship: After learning Sabrina's secret, Harvey develops one of these with Salem.
* OfficialCouple: With Sabrina.
* OneTrueLove: Sabrina's, it's outright confirmed that he is the second half of her soul stone, therefore her soul mate.
* OppositesAttract: With Sabrina. Sabrina is BookSmart but unathletic and not very good at sports, while Harvey is a BookDumb jock.
* PopularIsDumb: The BookDumb athletic BigManOnCampus.
* PutOnABus: After season 4.
* RomanticRunnerUp: In later seasons. [[spoiler: That is, until the series finale, when he and Sabrina end up together. A file from the ''X-Files'' website later confirms that Aunt Irma - you know, the crazy lady with a temper that likes turning people into things - officiated the common-law wedding of Harvey and Sabrina and that they later lived in a house outside of Westbridge.]]
* SecretKeeper: In later seasons, after he discovers Sabrina's secret (the fact that she's a witch).

----
* AlphaBitch: She epitomizes this trope so much she was the former TropeNamer.
* TheBully: She enjoys tormenting Sabrina and her friends, and calling Sabrina a "freak" as regularly as possible. So much that in the episode “Sabrina the Sandman” where Sabrina began working as a temporary sandman and started invading people's dreams, she learned Libby actually enjoys going to high school because she can humiliate and belittle others. The next day Sabrina lied and told Libby she'd heard that she won a scholarship and would be studying abroad, out of a regular school. The mere thought of it completely horrified Libby.
* CatchPhrase: "Ewww!" and "Freak!"
* CruelCheerleader: Along with her minions. In this show cheerleaders are treated as AlwaysChaoticEvil.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's just as snarky as she's mean, especially when talking to Sabrina and Valerie:
-->'''Libby:''' I'd like to thank the two of you for always travelling together, it helps me insult you that much more efficiently.
* TheDreaded: It's mentioned that the only reason she's popular is because everyone fears her.
-->'''Sabrina:''' How can she do that and still be so popular?
-->'''Jenny:''' Libby is not popular, she is powerful.
-->'''Sabrina:''' Well how did she get the power?
-->'''Jenny:''' She seized it and as long as there are people backing her up she'll keep it, it's all very Stalin.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Despite her LackOfEmpathy for everyone, she loves her grandmother.
* {{Expy}}: She is similar to Rosalind from the comic book.
* FreudianExcuse: In "Five Easy Pieces of Libby", it's strongly implied that the reason Libby doesn't show compassion for other people is because it's never been shown to her.
* GirlPosse: She's often seen with two girls who follow her.
* HiddenDepths:
** The episode "Five Easy Pieces of Libby" is all about this: among other things, Sabrina learns that her nemesis has a cold and controlling mother and needs a tutor to help her in math.
** In "The Band Episode", she's shown to be genuinely talented and Sabrina even asks her to sing for her band.
** In one episode she mentions she's managed to get "one step closer to the White House", implying she has political aspirations.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: It's been stated that Libby has yet to develop compassion or empathy for her fellow human beings, but it's been proven that she has a soft spot for and genuinely loves her grandmother, whom she goes to amusement parks with on her birthday to ride roller coasters.
* KarmaHoudini: Mr. Kraft will always defer to the cheerleaders and give them whatever they want. Of course, after they graduate high school this doesn't make any difference whatsoever. Sabrina can usually taint her victory a little with slapstick, but Libby still ultimately gets what she wanted.
* LackOfEmpathy: Literally. When Libby is turned into a puzzle, the piece representing her compassion and empathy does not exist.
* LaughablyEvil: She takes delight in being cruel, to CardCarryingJerkass levels, and it's often quite funny to watch. Not to mention that she often gets some slapstick comeuppance.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The snobby, conceited Dark Feminine to Sabrina's sweet, cheerful Light Feminine. Libby is also dark-haired in contrast to Sabrina's HairOfGoldHeartOfGold.
* PetTheDog: Rarely, but she has her moments, such as when she accepts to sing for Sabrina's band or when she congratulates Valerie for making the cheerleading squad. Although, she never becomes a LovableAlphaBitch, as any PetTheDog moment is usually followed by one of her usual KickTheDog moments, and she always goes back to being a bully in the next episode.
* PutOnABus: After season 3, Libby's parents send her to a boarding school.
* RichBitch: She's the typical nasty, spoiled rich girl.
* TheRival: She views Sabrina as her rival.
* SingleGirlSeeksMostPopularGuy: She likes Harvey just because he is a popular jock in the school.
* SmugSnake: Towards Sabrina.
* ToxicFriendInfluence: In "Geek Like Me," Sabrina casts a spell on Libby to turn her into a nerd and experience what it's like to be teased for once. Instead of learning a lesson, though, Libby rallies the other nerds in the school and makes ''them'' into a group of nasty bullies who insult everyone they see. Sabrina realizes that Libby's naturally-nasty personality inherently makes her a Toxic Friend, bringing out the worst qualities of everyone around her.

* AdaptationNameChange: She was called Marnie Littlefield in the original TV movie.
* AdvertisedExtra: Billed as a series regular in Season 1, but only appears in thirteen of the twenty-three episodes.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Her disappearance is never mentioned or explained. One novelization hand waves it when Sabrina is reunited with a fantasy version of her and says "you just sort of went away", implying they drifted apart or she moved.
* GirlNextDoor: Much like Sabrina, she is down-to-earth and approachable.
* {{Irony}}: She admits to occasionally believing that supernatural things exist, not knowing her best friend is a witch.
* RomanticFalseLead: She initially has a crush on Harvey, but soon realises they have very little in common, and she was more enamored with the idea of him.

----
* TheArchmage: Head of the Witches' Council.
* BasementDweller: He used to live in his mother's basement until some point before "First Kiss".
* TheCaligula: One of the most powerful warlocks in the entire Other Realm, and quite unstable to boot. He has a horrific temper, delights in tormenting mortals and witches alike, and likes to [[SuddenlyShouting abruptly start screaming]] in the middle of sentences.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Like many side characters, he disappears after Season One and is never mentioned again - the Witches' Council does occasionally show up, but Drell is notably absent. He only gets properly PutOnABus in Season Five, where it's explained the Witches' Council members of previous seasons have left.
* FalseSoulmate: With Hilda, his ex.
* {{Jerkass}}: Acts like this to Hilda, who he left at the altar, and towards Sabrina.
* JerkassHasAPoint: In "Terrible Things," Sabrina ignores her aunts' warnings about using charitable magic and helps Jenny become class president, Harvey join the starting line on the football team, and Mr. Poole determine a way to turn lead to gold. She's brought before Drell, who tells her that while she's free to meddle in the lives of her friends all she wants, ''breaking the laws of physics'' is a crime with serious repercussions. He's not nice about it, but his critique does have merit: the ability to turn lead to gold would destabilize the entire global economy, especially in the hands of a science teacher with no financial training.
* LargeAndInCharge: He's head of the Witches Council and played by the 6'6 Penn Jillette.
* LargeHam: As you'd expect given [[Creator/PennAndTeller who plays him]], Drell is ''very'' loud and theatrical.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: He's a stickler for the Other Realm's many rules and forces people to go through the "proper channels"--even when it's an emergency--just because he likes to seem them grovel.

----
* ButtMonkey: Poor girl is always picked on and bullied by Libby.
* ContrastingReplacementCharacter: Replaces Jenny as Sabrina's best friend. Unlike Jenny who was a rebellious and confident girl who prides herself on being different, Valerie is a needy and insecure NaiveEverygirl who just wants to fit in with the others.
* TheEeyore: Very prone to self-pity, much to her parents' dismay, who want her to be more cheerful and optimistic like [[PluckyGirl Sabrina]].
* FriendOrIdolDecision: At the end of the Friday the 13th episode, she's forced to choose between her best friend Sabrina and becoming popular for the first time in her entire life. She chooses Sabrina.
* GirlNextDoor: Even after she becomes a cheerleader, she's still down-to-earth and wholesome like Sabrina.
* GranolaGirl: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]]--her mother is a nutritionist, so she's only allowed to eat health-based foods.
* HiddenDepths: While not a top student like Sabrina and often comes off as a pathetic ditz, she's shown to have more book smarts than [[DumbJock Harvey]] and even Libby. When Sabrina rejects her role as editor of the school paper, Mrs. Quick gives the role to Valerie, whose editorial was pretty good and better than Libby's. She also gets the third place in the Invention Fair in another episode.
* IconicSequelCharacter: Introduced in season 2, and is probably the most popular and remembered out of Sabrina's rotating circle of best friends over the years.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: The reason why she wants to become a cheerleader.
* NaiveEverygirl: An extremely shy, naive, insecure girl who tries desperately to fit in with the "cool crowd".
* NakedFreakOut: When Sabrina enters Valerie's dream in "Sabrina The Sandman", Valerie's clothes disappear in class after a surprise test is sprung on her, leaving her covering herself with her hands and screaming.
* PutOnABus: After season 3, she moves to Alaska.
* ShrinkingViolet: Due to her low self-esteem.
* StrawLoser: Sometimes she seems to be there to make Sabrina look cool and confident. Compared to Sabrina, she's more socially awkward, less intelligent (though Valerie is not BookDumb, she's not a brilliant student like Sabrina), without a boyfriend, and overall more pathetic and insecure. Even Valerie's parents like Sabrina more than her.
* ThrowTheDogABone:
** She occasionally gets recognition for her achievements, as seen in HiddenDepths.
** In one episode, despite her nervousness around Justin, a boy she likes, he asks her out. Even after Valerie embarrasses herself in front of the entire school, he's still interested in her.
** She becomes a second-string cheerleader after genuinely impressing the judges at her audition, making her adjacent to the popular kids. Libby herself compliments Valerie on her skills.
** After her departure, Sabrina mentions that Valerie is doing great in Alaska and has many new friends.
* TheUnfavourite: Subverted in "Whose So-Called Life Is It Anyway?". Valerie's parents want her to be more like Sabrina, but when Valerie turns into an exact copy of Sabrina, her parents miss the old Valerie.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: In the Friday the 13th episode, Sabrina is able to tell mortals about being a witch, as they'll immediately forget when the clocks strike midnight. The first person she tells is Valerie, who immediately declares that Sabrina having magic is the coolest thing ever. That alone demonstrates her unprejudiced nature, but the true What You Are in the Dark moment comes at the episode's end. Libby overhears Sabrina telling Harvey the secret and tries to expose her to the world in front of a huge newscrew. When Harvey doesn't reveal the truth, Libby promises Valerie that if she backs her up, she'll become one of the popular kids, which has been Valerie's goal for the entire series. After a moment's hesitation, Valerie lies and says that she doesn't know what Libby is talking about, choosing her best friend over the popularity she's always craved.

----
* DeanBitterman: He starts out as Vice Principal before becoming principal in Season 4.
* FreudianExcuse:
** Had an utterly horrible childhood, followed by an equally horrible marriage (to a woman who turned out to be a witch and treated him like a pet).
** It's implied his animosity towards Sabrina comes from his experience after being married to a witch.
* HasAType: He essentially dated -or married- blond witches.
* IconicSequelCharacter: He's the most iconic antagonist on the show along with Libby, but doesn't appear until season 2.
* {{Jerkass}}: Especially towards Sabrina, it's not clear why he hates her so much.
* KarmaHoudini: Despite giving detentions out for things that would be cause for legal trouble (don't like their clothes, personality, or in Sabrina's case "just because" several times), he manages to get off scott-free. He does get slapsticky comeuppances but rarely is his abuse of power stopped.

* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Never seen or mentioned again after season 4.
* ForcedIntoEvil: Or at least forced in being a jerkass. He seems like an overall jovial guy, a good friend to Harvey, and is even excited to meet Sabrina at first, however his witch hunter genes force him into disliking her on sight. There are even episode where he is friendly or neutral towards Sabrina and the conflict comes from him taking up Harvey's time.
* {{Jerkass}}: To Sabrina. However, he's a good friend to Harvey.
* IKnowYourTrueName: Sort of. If a witch hunter accuses a witch of 'being' a witch, even if they don't mean it literally then the witch will turn into a mouse.

** Not as a profession, but as a genetic trait. Whenever a witch or a magic spell is nearby, he senses it and becomes suspicious. He doesn't know that magic exists, or that he has the Witch Hunter gene, but it nevertheless makes him dislike Sabrina.
** It should be noted that the first time he met Sabrina, he had a very noticeable shift in behavior. He initially seemed happy to speak to her, but then his instincts kicked in (made clear to the audience by a *ding*).

* CharacterDevelopment: Roxie starts season 5 as an anti-social moody bitch and ends the series as one of Sabrina's closest friends.
* CuteBruiser: She's the shortest main character (not counting Salem who is a cat) but she's very tough.

* DefrostingIceQueen: Part of her CharacterDevelopment involves her becoming a kinder person.
* FreudianExcuse: Roxie being the way she is gets explained in seasons 6 and 7 when we find out her mother was in prison for theft and her father and stepmother pay her no attention, resulting in her never even having a proper Christmas.
* IconicSequelCharacter: Along with Morgan, she doesn't appear until season 5 but remains a main character in the last three seasons of the show and even moves into Sabrina's old house after the aunts are PutOnABus.

----
* BrainlessBeauty: Morgan is attractive and fashionable but comes across as rather airheaded. This is much more prominent in the final two seasons but even early on she has a spacey side.
* CallingTheOldManOut: During one Christmas episode, Sabrina spent the holiday with Morgan and her family. Morgan's parents constantly argue with one another and show no consideration to the fact that Morgan has constantly attempted to make them happy. After talking about it with Sabrina, Morgan decides enough is enough and lectures her parents for their constant, thoughtless criticism. This gets her parents to realize how they've treated her and they become more considerate.
* CharacterDevelopment: She started as mostly a nuisance but developed into a loyal friend (albeit a shallow, ditzy one.)
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Film/{{Clueless}} Amber]], another role played by Elisa Donovan.
* FieryRedhead: At times, though she usually acts more like a DumbBlonde.
* {{Flanderization}}: When we meet Morgan in season 5 she is of course shallow and a bit spacey but completely capable and in control of herself. But then in season 7 she is a complete ditz.
* IconicSequelCharacter: Along with Roxie, she doesn't appear until season 5 but remains a main character in the last three seasons of the show and moves into Sabrina's old house after the aunts are PutOnABus.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Especially compared to [[AlphaBitch Libby]]. She is a shallow, selfish, spoiled airhead but not a bad person. Like Roxie, she gets better after her first episodes and becomes one of Sabrina's best friends.
* PopularIsDumb: She is a good example, being both tremendously dim-witted and very popular.
* RichesToRags: Spends her first season and a half living it up on her parents' money, including using it to buy clothes rather than the rent. In season 6, her father finally has enough and cuts her off, forcing Morgan to get a job and try and adapt to a "common" lifestyle.
* RomanticFalseLead: Morgan seems to really like Sabrina's boyfriends: she dates both Josh and Harvey ([[ReallyGetsAround among many others]]).
