!!Martin the Warrior, [[EmpathicWeapon and his sword]]
[[quoteright:179:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/martinthewarrior_2670.jpg]]
A warrior mouse. Raised in the far north, his father gave him his own sword. Martin was captured by Badrang the Tyrant as a young mouse, and later came to Mossflower country, where he had his sword re-forged by Boar the Fighter, defeated the wildcat Tsarmina, and helped found Redwall Abbey. After his death, he serves as a SpiritAdvisor for the Abbey.
----
* TheAce: He's the original hero of Redwall Abbey and his memory is still revered hundreds of generations after his time. Most would-be heroes aspire to be like Martin.
** BrokenAce: After [[spoiler:Rose's death]], he changed.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassPreacher: What he seemed to be in ''Redwall'' due to EarlyInstallmentWeirdness.
** HeartbrokenBadass: After [[spoiler:Rose's death]].
** MemeticBadass: Both he and his sword are in-universe examples. Redwallers acknowledge his bravery and skill, and villains universally believe his sword to have magical powers.
* TheBerserker: Just the once, at the end of ''Martin the Warrior''; it's pretty unsettling.
* BigGood: Arguably of the whole series.
* TheChampion: For Redwall Abbey.
* ClingyMacguffin: A benevolent version. If stolen, the sword always returns to Redwall. If anything evil touches it, they're doomed to a messy end. Even the [[KrakenAndLeviathan Deepcoiler,]] who ate the sword by accident, was killed by it.
* CoolSword: The sword's appearance is rather plain. However, [[ThunderboltIron it was forged from a falling star]] [[UltimateBlacksmith by one of the most skilled metalworkers in Salamandastron's history,]] and will never wear, rust, dull or bend. Its perfection is remarked upon [[OnceAnEpisode Once A Book,]] and the Champion that doesn't like swords says it feels good in his paws. It is noted in ''Salamandastron'' that the sword is too large for shrews and — ironically, considering its maker — too small for badgers.
** Not really ironic, considering that it originally was a sword that was meant for a mouse to wield, and the hilt was the same one that was used for the sword before it was broken.
* DavidVersusGoliath: The David to Tsarmina's Goliath.
* DeadGuyJunior: It's offhand, but Luke named him after his own father.
* FailureHero: His portrayal in the books that actually feature him in life is rather short of the pinnacle of awesomeness as which he is remembered by the time of original ''Redwall''. Unlike some other good guys in Redwall books, life cuts Martin absolutely no slack. His stubborness and brattishness as a youngster [[spoiler: get his grandmother killed]] and condemns Martin himself to many seasons in slavery. His quest to take revenge for what was done to him [[spoiler: gets the love of his life killed.]] Martin's attempt to just run away from all the tragedy? Ends up with him in prison, and his heirloom, the last thing left to remind him of his family, broken. Oh, and it is very heavily implied, that while he was doing that, the rest of his tribe was wiped out or enslaved, with only one survivor (who is stated to die the next winter after being released from slavery). He finally finds a wise mentor and a father figure in Boar the Fighter? Guess what, despite trying his best to help when danger comes, Martin [[spoiler: is forced to leave Boar to die, becaus YouCantFightFate.]] Sure, Martin succeeds in killing his archenemies (at the point where their forces are already defeated and doing one-on-one battles with them means little more than settling Martin's personal grudges), but he hardly ever manages to protect anyone truly important to him, coming to, in his own words, 'a bitter and a sad reward' by the end of his life.
* HeroicBSOD: After [[spoiler:Rose's death]], he spends days without speaking, and when he finally does start talking again, he spends only one heartbreaking conversation with his friends before leaving.
* ImplacableMan: What so unnerves Tsarmina about him.
* InformedAttribute: Not him, the sword. Several characters throughout the series remind an idealistic young beast that a sword is just a very sharp inanimate object. [[BlatantLies Sure it is]].
* TheLostLenore: Again, Rose.
* MasterSwordsman
* PosthumousCharacter: All but three of the books that involve him take place after his death.
* SoulJar: Possibly, since Martin's spirit seems to hang around the sword.
* SpiritAdvisor: To all inhabitants of Redwall Abbey, as well as those destined to protect it.
* WalkTheEarth: How he spent his time between ''Martin the Warrior'' and ''Mossflower.''

!!Lady Cregga Rose Eyes
[[quoteright:152:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cregga_2271.JPG]]
A badger ruler of Salamandastron; becomes the Badger Mother of Redwall after being blinded. One of the longest-lived characters in the series.
----
* TheBerserker: Her defining characteristic when she was Lady of Salamandastron. The "rose eyes" became inflamed with blood in battle.
* [[spoiler: GoOutWithASmile]]
* HandicappedBadass: With a little assistance, even the blind old nanny can still fire a powerful longbow.
* MethuselahSyndrome: When you remember the (relatively) enormous span of time between books, you have to realize just how OLD she is.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Even when blind and extremely old, she can still scare vermin into submission.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Until the end of ''The Long Patrol.''

[[quoteright:181:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clunythescourge_3880.JPG]]

* {{Sadistic Choice}}: A favourite tactic of Cluny's.
* SanitySlippage: As a result of BadDreams about a mouse with a sword.
* {{Satanic Archetype}}

!!Redtooth
[[quoteright:156:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/redtooth_9439.JPG]]
A rat in Cluny's horde.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: It's noted several times that Redtooth is an ambitious rat, and that he may hope to have Cluny's job one day. This may well be the case, but it's never demonstrated.
* TheDragon: Cluny's initial NumberTwo. He's also a fairly competent soldier, and is able to put up a respectable fight against Constance the Badger, which is no mean feat.
* ItsPersonal: Develops a vendetta against Constance after she embarasses him and Cluny.
* SinisterScimitar: Cutlass actually, but it has the same effect.
* YouDirtyRat

* [[spoiler:KillItWithWater: Boiling water to be precise.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast
* OnlySaneMan: Plays the role of peacemaker in the horde, keeping the rats and the weasels, ferrets and stoats from one another's throats.
* PragmaticVillainy: Does his best to be the peacemaker and placate the hordebeasts, not out of the goodness of his heart, but because it makes things easier.
* UndyingLoyalty: While the rest of the horde serve Cluny out of fear or ambition, Darkclaw honestly seems to do so out of personal loyalty. When Cluny has a VillainousBSOD after the failure of the seige tower, it's Darkclaw who takes control of the horde and continues issuing orders in his name so that the horde will stay loyal to Cluny.
* YouDirtyRat

* BatteringRam: Drives one for Cluny.
* TheBully
* DirtyCoward
* TheDragon: Becomes Cluny's right-hand after Redtooth dies.
** TheStarscream: In the TV show. In the book he makes it clear that he'd like Cluny's job, but is too chicken to go for it.
* FantasticRacism: Views rats as the elite of Cluny's horde and deeply resents the idea of having to work for a weasel.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His death is a direct result of him getting full of himself and drunk on power, as [[spoiler:Constance shoots him with a long-range arrow meant for Cluny while he's dressed in Cluny's armor.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: BIG time.
* KarmicDeath: The way that Constance snipes him.
* TheNeidermeyer: Hated by all of the other hordebeasts, including Darkclaw and Killconey, due to the viciousness with which he drives them.

* WickedWeasel: The first member of the weasel family (a ferret) to be prominently featured.

!!Asmodeus Poisonteeth
[[quoteright:194:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asmodeuspoisonteeth_8660.JPG]]
An adder living in a quarry in Mossflower. [[spoiler:Acquired the sword of Martin the Warrior after King Bull Sparra dropped it.]]
----

* AGodAmI: Asmodeus seems to see himself as TheGrimReaper.

* {{Badass}}
* BigEater: When it comes to rodents.
* TheDreaded: Everyone is scared of that snake.
* FauxAffablyEvil
* HeroKiller: Although he kills his share of villains, too.
* HypnoticEyes: How he transfixes his victims.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Named for a demon lord. This is acknowledged in-story.
* [[spoiler:OffWithHisHead]]
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Started the trend of adders being the series' counterpart to dragons.
* TheParalyzer: It's hypnosis, but it still qualifies.
* RedBaron: Giant Ice Eyes.
* SatanicArchetype: While this trope is [[DiscussedTrope discussed]] in regards to Asmodeus, he ultimately averts it. He doesn't fit any of the criteria listed on this trope's page; he's just a vicious predator who happens to have a demonic name.
* SmugSnake:
* {{Sssssnaketalk}}

!!Sela
[[quoteright:169:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sela_9594.JPG]]
A fox; an expert at herbs and also a spy. Serves only herself rather than truly allying herself with anyone.
----
* AssholeVictim: Gets killed because Cluny finds out about her double-dealing.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: To both the abbey residents and Cluny.
* CunningLikeAFox
* DirtyCoward
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor
* [[spoiler: RewardedAsATraitorDeserves]]

----

* TheProtagonist
* SpoiledBrat: Initially.
* TookALevelInBadass: Becomes a strong leader, and the same kind of asskicking badass as his father.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Has aspects of this.

!!Slagar the Cruel/[[spoiler:Chickenhound]]
[[quoteright:245:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/slagar2_3187.JPG]]
A fox who captures young creatures to sell as slaves. [[spoiler:He's really Sela's son Chickenhound from the first book; when Asmodeus bit him, his knowledge of herbs kept him alive, but that part of his face died, thus the reason he wears the mask.]]
----
* AxCrazy: Slagar has lost his mind, to the point where he actually believes that the Redwallers ruined his face.
* BadassCape
* BadBoss
* BodyHorror: His face.

* DeceptiveDisciple: To Malkariss.
* DisneyVillainDeath: Falls down an empty well to his death.
* DisproportionateRetribution: For (in his mind) scarring his face, he punishes Redwall by kidnapping and selling their children into slavery.
* TheDreaded
* EvilSoundsDeep: His voice is unusually gravelly [[spoiler:because he got bitten in the throat by an adder]]. He's even voiced by Tim Curry in the TV series.
* FaceHeelTurn: He never was a good character to begin with, but he takes a turn for the worse after being bitten by Asmodeus.
* FacialHorror: Why he wears the mask. Asmodeus' bite left his face a ruin.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: He was originally [[spoiler:Chickenhound, a minor antagonist from ''Redwall'']]. After losing half of his face and all of his sanity, he's become a roaming slavetrader, hated by all those who encounter him, and feared by his own crew.
* TheHeavy: He's not the Big Bad, that's Malkariss, nor is he the Dragon, that's Nadaz. He's even outranked by Stonefleck.
* HiredGuns: Works for Malkariss in exchange for money and power, not out of loyalty.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm
* [[MalevolentMaskedMan Malevolent Masked Fox]]
* ManipulativeBastard
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast
* RevengeByProxy: Kidnaps Mattimeo and the other children to hurt their parents.

* TimCurry: His voice actor in the animated series.
* TookALevelInBadass[=/=]TookALevelInJerkass: [[spoiler:Chickenhound]] was a cowardly sneak thief and accidental murderer. Slagar the Cruel is a slaver, a mass murderer, and one of the series' better Manipulative Bastards.
* TwoFaced: Under his mask, half of his face is dead.
* [[spoiler:TheUnfought: He's got two [[PapaWolf Papa Wolves]] and a band of warriors out to get him, but nobody gets a chance to have a go at him.]]
* UngratefulBastard: His MoralEventHorizon [[spoiler:as Chickenhound]] was stealing from the Redwallers after they nursed him back to health, and killing Methuselah.

!!Orlando the Axe
A badger who seeks to rescue his daughter Auma from Slagar.
----
* AnAxeToGrind
* TheBigGuy: All badgers are big, but Orlando is specifically stated to be even bigger than Constance. And a badger is always going to be the most powerful member in any group, unless the group itself is made up of badgers.
* InsistentTerminology: He objects to his axe being called a "hatchet".
* PapaWolf

!!Threeclaws
[[quoteright:142:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/threeclaws_8763.JPG]]
A weasel in Slagar's group; the main slave driver.
----
* TheDragon: Slagar's right-hand weasel.
* HooksAndCrooks: He and the rest of the weasels in the slave crew are armed with these.
* KarmaHoudini: He doesn't completely escape punishment, but being sentenced to run south into the unknown lands isn't much of a punishment considering how horrible he'd been.
* WickedWeasel

!!Halftail
[[quoteright:147:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/halftail_9382.JPG]]
A stoat in Slagar's gang.

* TheBrute: A DumbMuscle sadist who works as a slavedriver.
* TheBully: Delights in tormenting the slaves, to the point where Slagar has to rein him in.
* CorporalPunishment: Loves administering it to the slaves; recieves it from Slagar early on.
* DumbMuscle: None too bright.
* KickTheDog: Easily the worst of the slaving band in this regard.
* KnifeNut: Carries a single dagger in addition to his cane.
* WickedWeasel: A stoat

!!Vitch
An undersized rat in Slagar's gang.
* AgentProvocateur: His role in Slagar's band is to pretend to be a mouse and infiltrate whatever group Slagar intends to steal slaves from, then help convince that group to trust Slagar's circus.
* BrattyHalfPint: More malicious than most, but he manages to be bratty too.
* ButtMonkey: Vitch gets treated by the rest of Slagar's band almost as badly as the slaves do.
* DirtyCoward: He's afraid to fight the chained slaves. Then again, both Mattimeo and Tim Churchmouse kicked his ass while chained up.

!!Malkariss
[[quoteright:151:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/malkariss_7503.JPG]]
An old, deformed polecat. Founded the underground Kingdom of Malkariss, and spends most of his time inside a statue of a polecat, speaking only to Nadaz.
----
* BigBad: Slagar has his own motivation for working for Malkariss and plans to [[TheStarscream overthrow him as soon as possible]], but he does, for the time being, work for Malkariss.
* {{Egopolis}}: Rules the Kingdom of Malkariss, named for himself.
* EvilOldFolks: Revealed as such.

A rat, and Malkariss' "Voice of the Host" - when Malkariss gives orders, he relays them to everyone else.
----
* AccidentalMurder: Slain by Matthias and Orlando the Axe when they destroy the statue he's hiding in.
* TheDragon: To Malkariss.
* DragonAscendant: Although he doesn't last long.
* EvilChancellor: With the caveat that his boss is pretty evil too.
* MouthOfSauron: As the Voice of the Host, Nadaz speaks for Malkariss, who never emerges from behind a statue.
* [[NonActionBigBad Non Action Villain]]: Nadaz isn't a fighter, although he certainly helps to encourage the host with his drumming.

!!The Wearet
[[quoteright:183:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wearet_772.JPG]]
The toughest fighter in the Kingdom of Malkariss.

* DumbMuscle: It can only snarl and slaver.
* MixAndMatchCritters: Half-weasel, half-ferret.

* BigFun: He's described as pudgy.
* FluffyTamer: Kinda. At first, the GiantEnemyCrab they're up against looks threatening, but when it grabs a staff that the heroes are using, [[TheDitz it's too dumb to let go.]] [[CrowningMomentOfFunny Gonff then dances with it.]]
* JustLikeRobinHood: Although he steals food instead of money, the concept still applies.

* CatsAreMean: Well, [[RetiredMonster he used to be.]]
* EvilOverlord: Although he's a lot more tame than other examples in the series.
* IllBoy: We first see him severely ill, and his conquering days are clearly behind him.
* NobleDemon: While he does imprison Martin, he obviously understands that Martin's [[TheDrifter not from around here]] and is perfectly willing to release him.
* ParentalFavoritism: He favored Gingivere over Tsarmina, with good reason.
* PragmaticVillainy: After ruthlessly crushing a rebellion, Verdauga made peace with the woodlanders and treated them, although not exactly nicely, well enough that they weren't inspired to revolt against him. His taxes were manageable and he used Kotir's soldiers to defend them from bandits and other wandering hordes.
* RepetitiveName: Verdauga ALSO means "green eye." His name is Greeneye Greeneye.
* RetiredMonster: As seen under pragmatic villainy, he made a sort of peace with the woodlanders after crushing their rebellion. His rule is still making things plenty difficult for woodlanders, though.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: He dies right after we meet him.

* {{Badass}}: She nearly ''killed'' Martin the Warrior. She probably would have succeeded if she hadn't freaked out and backed into the water.
* BigBad: Of ''Mossflower.''
* CatsAreMean: Word of God says her name is a play on Tsar (as in Russian monarchs) and mean.
* DarkActionGirl: She acts like she's too good to get her hands dirty, only to turn around and give Martin the beating of his life when she has no other choice.
* DavidVersusGoliath: The Goliath to Martin's David.
* {{The Evil Prince}}ss: Plots against her father and brother, ultimately killing the former and framing the latter.
* FantasticRacism: Looks down on the woodlander inhabitants of Mossflower, believing it impossible for them to pose a threat to her rule. When [[spoiler:her castle is flooded and struck with catapult stones in the climax]], she assumes that it has to be the work of her estranged brother, Gingivere.
* FemmeFatalons: As a wildcat, this should come as no surprise.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Everyone wishes that her brother was the successor. They even prefer her father, who was a vicious tyrant himself.
* LargeAndInCharge: As a cat, she's bigger than the rats and mustelids in her army and most of the woodlanders she rules.
* {{No Holds Barred Beatdown}}: Her final battle against Martin. She nearly kills him, several times over, and Martin's never able to gain any actual advantage.
* PantheraAwesome: The only ''Redwall'' villain to so thoroughly dominate her opponent. It's largely because, as a European wildcat, she's many, many times Martin's size.
* SanitySlippage: She slowly goes mad through a mix of power and the constant sound of dripping water.
* SelfDisposingVillain: Has a FreakOut and drowns herself.]
* SelfMadeOrphan: Poisons her father. He even suspects that she'll do it, but he's too old and decrepit to do much about it.
* SiblingRivalry: With Gingivere.
* TheUnfavorite: Although it's not like Verdauga was unjustified.
* VillainousBreakdown: Though her sanity is obviously slipping at certain points throughout the book, it isn't until the very end, when her castle is being flooded and hammered with catapult stones, that she completely snaps and starts shooting arrows into the forest at random. Then, in her fight with Martin, she's a shrieking berserker far detached from the imperious queen she was at the start of the book.]

[[folder: Mariel of Redwall & The Bellmaker]]

!!!Mariel of Redwall

!!Mariel

* ActionGirl: The first female protagonist, although not a Champion.
* EasyAmnesia: She doesn't remember anything as the result of a head injury at the beginning of the book, but an herbal drink restores her memory.
* BrokenBird: She goes through hell after her father's ship is captured by pirates.
* HairTriggerTemper: Mostly while still amnesiac. She's very defensive and hits Treerose for teasing her.
* HotBlooded: Mariel is always ready to fight anyone, even when it gets her into serious trouble. She even bites the searats that originally capture Joseph's ship.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: A [[WhipItGood large ship's rope]] with knots in it. She eventually develops her own system of complicated knotwork that can be used on most any rope.
* MeaningfulName: Calls herself "Storm Gullwhacker" when she wakes up on the beach, as it's the last thing she remembers. She goes back to Mariel afterwards, but keeps the Gullwhacker.
* TheNotLoveInterest: For Dandin.
* PlatonicLifePartners: Travels with Dandin for several seasons, but there's never any indication of romantic feelings.
* {{Revenge}}: Part of her motivation is to get back at Gabool the Wild.

!!Dandin

* TheChampion: He's not addressed as such in ''Mariel'', but given that he's a mouse armed with Martin's sword, who feels the need to smite evil on behalf of the Abbey, it's fair to say he's fulfilling the role. By ''The Bellmaker'' this is no longer the case.
* CoolSword: In ''Mariel of Redwall'' where he carries Martin's sword.
* {{Delinquent}}: Seen as one before the events of ''Mariel''.
* KnifeNut: In ''Bellmaker'', where he's armed with a set of daggers.
* HeroicLineage: Descended from Gonff. Specifically, he's Gonff's great-grandson.
* OlderAndWiser: In ''The Bellmaker''
* TheNotLoveInterest: With Mariel.
* PlatonicLifePartners: He and Mariel come off like this in ''Bellmaker''
* TookALevelInBadass: He starts as a scapegrace youth but becomes a powerful fighter when he gets Martin's sword.

!!Tarquin L. Woodsorrel

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Like all hares. He's comparable to Boorab in terms of silly-to-badass ratio.
* InstrumentOfMurder: Brains people with his harolina.

!!The Honorable Rosemary (Hon Rosie)

* ActionGirl
* AnnoyingLaugh: It's said to be able to curdle cream from thirty paces away.
* CuteButCacophonic: She's very nice and friendly, but goodness, her ''laugh''.... Even the reader gets to see just how bad it is if you listen to the audio version.
* DisneyDeath: Thought to have been lost at sea, but it turns out she's alive.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Their plan's going well, and the vermin are falling for their trick... and then Rosie lets out a huge laugh, messing up the whole situation.

!!Simeon

* DisabilitySuperpower: He's blind as a stone, but has very strong hearing and judgement.

!!Durry Quill
* DisneyDeath: Thought to have been lost at sea, but it turns out that he's alive.
* TookALevelInBadass: Due to his journey in ''Mariel of Redwall''.

!!Saxtus

!!Rufe Brush

* BewareTheQuietOnes: Often described as strong and silent, he is one of the organizers of Abbey defenses versus Greypatch.
* CallForward: He's the one who put Martin's Sword on the weathervane. (The first time, at least. [=MacPhearsome=] puts it back after Samkim uses it.)
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In ''Mariel of Redwall'', he's a strong silent type. In ''The Bellmaker'', he's far less confident and more emotional. Oddly, he seems to switch characterization with Oak Tom, who was emotional and kind (although still capable of badassery) in ''Mariel'' and generally curt at all times in ''The Bellmaker''.

!!Gabool the Wild

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: How he gets to be king of vicious pirates.
* AxCrazy: Completely freaking nuts at the end of the book.
* BadBoss: To the point where his petty greed and habit of settling disputes with his captains by killing them does far more damage to the searat forces than the good guys do before the final battle.
* BeardOfEvil
* BigBad: Of ''Mariel of Redwall''
* CombatPragmatist: Despite his reputation as a fearsome fighter, he likes to fight dirty when facing foes who he thinks can actually kill him. Whether it's hiding a sword under the dining table, setting up a dagger behind a tapestry, or using a rug to cover a pit containing a deadly scorpion, there's no trick too low for Gabool the Wild.
* CoolSword: In his introduction, a few sentences are dedicated to the collection of exotic curved blades he keeps on his person at all times.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The scorpion that he tries to use to kill Lord Rawnblade ends up being flung right on top of him, and he gets stung to death by the creature's poisoned barb.
* IHaveYouNowMyPretty: He does this.... with a bell.
* TheMentallyIll: Practically schizophrenic by the end.
* {{Orcus on his Throne}}: He's never even aware that Mariel and her friends are after him.
* SanitySlippage: He gets progressively more insane the longer the book goes on.
* VillainousBreakdown: Far from the most stable of beasts even at the very beginning of the book, he starts falling apart at rapid pace after Greypatch's betrayal.

!!Greypatch

Once Gabool's most trusted aide, he turned on the Searat King after becoming afraid of the latter's increasing paranoia and insanity.

* TheHeavy: Certainly the most active villain in the book.
* KillItWithFire: His favorite tactic.
* PragmaticVillainy: What he wants to pursue, but his bloodthirsty tendencies make him NotSoDifferent from Gabool.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: With a twist - while he deserts Gabool's forces, his choice of the retirement spot only makes him more dangerous as an antagonist.
* SmugSnake: Unduly proud of his cunning and incapable of seeing when he and his crew are clearly biting more than they can chew.
* SurroundedByIdiots: A common complaint from him, particularly whenever any of his crew tries to get ideas that do not involve obeying him.
* TheStarscream: While he doesn't usurp Gabool's throne, and, in fact, never tries to, he still sucessfully betrays Gabool. And certainly pushes him to sidelines as a villain, by actively going out and threatening Redwall, while Gabool sits on his trone and goes progressively insane.

!!Joseph the Bellmaker

A mouse, and the father of Mariel. He created Redwall Abbey's bell (named the Joseph Bell, after him), and stayed there a time before traveling to Southsward to find Mariel.

----
* BadassGrandpa
* InTheHood
* PapaWolf: He'd do anything to protect his daughter.
* ProphecyTwist: According to the dream, he'll never return to Redwall if he goes to Southsward. [[spoiler:Naturally, everyone assumes he's going to die. Instead, he chooses to stay in Southsward.]]
* RebelLeader: Founds "Trag," Terramort Resistance Against Gabool, [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin a group of former slaves who]] [[LaResistance fight for freedom from Gabool]].
* SupportingLeader: He's the leader of a slave revolt in ''Mariel of Redwall'' and the {{Deuteragonist}} of ''The Bellmaker''--given that the book is titled after him.
* SimpleStaff: His weapon of choice.

!!!The Bellmaker

!!Gael Squirrelking

* MeaningfulName: His name comes from the word "gaol", an old word for "jail", and a reference to how he's held prisoner in his own dungeon.

!!The Foxwolf/Urgan Nagru

A fox who wears the pelt of a wolf he claims to have slain. Steals the throne of Southsward from Gael Squirrelking's family.

----
* BigBad
* CreepySouvenir: The wolf pelt he wears ([[spoiler:despite the fact that it was dead when he found it]]).
* CunningLikeAFox: Though not nearly to the degree of Slagar or Mokkan.
* [[spoiler:HoistByHisOwnPetard: He is slain when he's knocked against a tree and bumps his head against the wolf skull he wears; the teeth pierce his own skull.]]
* OrcusOnHisThrone: He is generally like this for most of the book, until the end when [[spoiler:he fights Finnbarr.]]
* SdrawkcabName: The name that he bestowed upon himself is the name of the wolf, Urgan, spelled backwards. He says this is so that his enemies know that he can come at them from any side.
* UnholyMatrimony: With Silvamord, although they hate each other.
* WolverineClaws

!!Silvamord

The mate of the Foxwolf; every bit as cruel and cunning as he is.

----

* CreepySouvenir: She wears a skirt made out of the tails of other creatures. That would be like wearing a skirt made of people's arms or something.
* CunningLikeAFox: She considers herself more clever than her mate.
* KnifeNut
* UnholyMatrimony

!!Muta

A badger who serves as nursemaid to Truffen, the squirrel prince.

----
* TheQuietOne: As her name implies, she's mute.
* TelephonePolearm: Rips a ''gigantic'' limb off a tree and swings it around as a weapon.

!!Slipp

Searat captain of the ''Pearl Queen''. He loses both it and most of his crew to the heroes and has no choice but to retreat into Mossflower with his only surviving flunky, Blaggut.

----

* BadBoss: Constantly abuses and bullies his underling, Blaggut, despite the latter's friendly demeanor and loyalty.
* BadLiar: The Redwallers never buy for a second that he and his cohort are not searats.
* ButtMonkey: Bad things just happen to him from beginning to end. He loses his ship and all of his crew. He's treated with suspicion by everyone at Redwall due to his criminal past and unpleasant demeanor, he's forced into doing all sorts of humiliating chores for them, he tries and fails to find any sort of treasure in the abbey due to constantly getting outwitted by children, and the only person he has any power over is his dimwitted subordinate. [[spoiler:And after he pushes things too far, [[TheDogBitesBack Blaggut finally has enough and kills him]].]]
* JabbaTableManners: Mellus compares him and Blaggut to pigs at a trough.
* {{Jerkass}}: Unlike [[KindheartedSimpleton Blaggut]], he's just greedy and unpleasant all around.
* LethalChef: The Redwallers put him to work in the kitchen after he claims to be one. His results send the abbot straight to the nearest washroom.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: For most of the book, he comes across as too inept, pathetic, and comical to be a real threat to anyone besides Blaggut. [[spoiler:Then he kills Mother Mellus, despite the sheer difference in size between them.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: When it's revealed that the Abbey’s "treasure" is just some dibbun toys, he loses it and attempts to attack the kids.

!!Blaggut

The former boatswain for Slipp and the only member of the crew to survive after Joseph and company steal their ship.

----

* AntiVillain: He can only be considered a villain because of his association with the less ambiguously evil Slipp. He eventually becomes a straight-up good guy with minimal change to his personality.
* ApologeticAttacker: The last thing he says to [[spoiler:Slipp as he strangles him to death]] is: "Sorry, Cap'n."
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After he avenges Mother Mellus by killing Slipp, he returns to Redwall to return what the latter stole and face their judgment.]]
* [[spoiler:TheDogBitesBack]]: [[spoiler:After Blaggut has to put up with his crap for the entire book, Slipp finally crosses the line when he murders Mother Mellus. Blaggut promptly kills him afterwards.]]
* [[spoiler:EarnYourHappyEnding: Blaggut is one of a very few vermin throughout the entire series who showed any signs of being good, and he got to live in the end after his HeelFaceTurn, as opposed to Veil Sixclaw and Romsca, who both suffered from RedemptionEqualsDeath]].
* FriendToAllChildren: Despite having lived with bloodthirsty searats for most of his life, he gets along surprisingly well with the dibbuns at Redwall.
* GeniusDitz: May not have much in the way of common sense, but he ''is'' a good boatbuilder.
* GoodFeelsGood: It doesn't take long for him to come to this conclusion during his time in the abbey.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Not the brightest character around, but very big-hearted, despite his criminal past.
* JabbaTableManners
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: He's just too damn nice for a searat.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: One of the ''very'' few vermin characters in the series who lacks the violent, greedy, and selfish tendencies of his brethren and is a genuinely friendly sort.
* MookFaceTurn: Eventually [[spoiler:strangles his boss to death]], saying that he's "bad all through" and will never change.
* ThePigpen: Blind Simeon can tell when he's near just by the stench alone.
* TokenGoodTeammate: His pleasant demeanor likely made him this among the searat crew of the ''Pearl Queen''.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He acts under the assumption that he and his captain are best friends, even though Slipp only abuses him.

!!Thruggann

!!Dingeye and Thura

* AlasPoorVillain: If they could even be considered "villains." They were just two members of Ferahgo's army who deserted because they wanted a better life. They weren't even {{Jerkass}}es (except to some extent towards each other), which is ''very'' rare when it comes to vermin.
* BigEater: Rather disgustingly played with in that they can't tear themselves away from food and keep eating until medication and a VomitDiscretionShot becomes necessary. At least one hopes the "fizzick" was meant to make them vomit, as the alternatives are worse.
** [[HarsherInHindsight Becomes rather sad]] when one considers that the reason they're gorging themselves is because they've spent so long not knowing where their next meal was coming from - the Corpsemakers' rations are established as being awful and being the comic relief they're probably not competent enough to feed themselves very effectively.
* CaptainObvious: "That stuff's water - it's all wet!"
* DyingAlone: After Thura catches the Dryditch Fever, Dingeye leaves him in to die by himself in the middle of the woods.
* FlatEarthAtheist: Dingeye claims that "when a creature's dead 'e's finished and that's all there is to it" seconds before Sister Nasturtium has a vision of the spirit of Martin.
* JabbaTableManners: They eat so untidily one somehow manages to bite the other in the process.

* ThouShaltNotKill: He'll fight if he needs to, but doesn't actively try to kill. He later becomes known as "Pallum the Peaceful".

!!Badrang the Tyrant
[[quoteright:250:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/badrang_2869.JPG]]
Former pirate stoat. Ruler of a fortress called Marshank, which is where Martin is in the beginning of the story.

* {{Archenemy}}: To Martin.
* BadassCape
* BigBad
* EvilVsEvil: With Tramun Clogg.

* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: He's called "The Tyrant" for a reason...
* OhCrap: His reaction when he realizes that a good percentage of the army fighting him are his former slaves - slaves he had beaten and starved - and that they're probably on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge.
* SmugSnake: Pretty proud of his fortress and position there.
* VillainousBreakdown: After his OhCrap moment, all the fight goes out of them and he frantically tries to find a way to flee.
* WickedCultured
* WouldHurtAChild: Ties Martin to the top of the fortress wall so that he'll die either in the storm or from birds the next morning. Felldoh also mentions that he was beaten by Badrang when he was not more than an infant.

!!Cap'n Tramun Josiah Cuttlefish Clogg (Cap'n Tramun Clogg)
[[quoteright:169:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clogg_2985.JPG]]
A stoat and pirate captain; once friends with Badrang, he now wishes to take over Marshank.
----
* AffablyEvil: He's a bad guy, but he's right cheerful about it and willingly gives a drink to Ballaw.
* TheAlcoholic: Enjoys his drinks; Badrang once tries to poison him by putting a bottle near him when he's sleeping. Just take a look at the picture! Also, in the first episode of the third season in the animated series, he does a brief dance in front of his crew. In all honesty, it looks like he may have had one too many at that point.
* EvilVsEvil: With Badrang.
* FatSlob
* OverlyLongName: Most vermin have single-word two-syllable names; not good enough for him, evidently. He's also the only one shown to have anything resembling a normal human name ("Josiah").
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:He's rather crazy by the end.]]

* TeamMom: To the Players.

A squirrelmaid member of the Rambling Rosehip Players.

* DistressedDamsel: Plays the part of one in a show, and when she gets lost, the first thing she does is pitifully call everyone's names and then cry.
* LargeHam: Extremely hammy in both her performances and real life.
* NonActionGuy: When everyone else is training for battle, she sniffs that they're all just going to get hurt or get rough paws from handling the weapons. She gets put on kitchen duty instead.
* TheTease: Flirts with everyone - another of the Players jokes that she's even seen Celandine fluttering her eyelashes at butterflies.

!!Brome
[[quoteright:178:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brome_6954.JPG]]
Rose's younger brother - a young mouse.

* ItsAllMyFault: Blames himself for [[spoiler:Rose's death]] and all the fighting, as none of this would have happened if he hadn't run away from home and been captured by Badrang.
* TheMedic: Becomes pretty skilled at medicine and becomes known as Brome the Healer.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Realizes that he could never kill anyone, though he does fight occasionally.

!!Sunflash the Mace

* {{Adorkable}}: To some extent. When the molemaids and baby hogs from the Dubbo-Lingl cave start climbing all over his body, he just stands still grinning with embarrassment. And later on, after Fordpetal says how handsome he is, he immediately gets up and leaves, as though he were about to start blushing.
* {{Archenemy}}: Of Swartt Sixclaw, who captured and tormented him as a teenager.
* ArmorIsUseless: Deconstructed. When Sunflash is charging towards Swartt during the battle at Salamandastron, the armor and helmet he wears protects him from arrows and rocks. [[RealityEnsues But at the same time, the armor slows him down, he gets sand into his chain mail, and he's practically blinded by his own sweat and the small visor slits his helmet provides]].
* {{Badass}}
* TheBerserker: Suffers from a bad case of the Bloodwrath.
* BerserkerTears: [[spoiler:After he sees Skarlath die]].
* CarryABigStick: A hornbeam tree limb, eventually molded into his trademark mace.
* CombatPragmatist
* DistinguishingMark: The yellow stripe on his head for which he is named.
* EarlyBirdCameo: He makes an appearance in the last chapter of ''Mossflower''.
* FriendToAllChildren: Sunflash loves children and gets along with them astoundingly well. He goes into his first [[UnstoppableRage Bloodwrath]] when he finds out children are being enslaved by searats, and only breaks out of the ensuing HeroicBSOD once the kids he just rescued thank him.
* TheHero
* InTheBlood: Descended from Boar the Fighter and Lord Brocktree, two of the most famous Badger Lords ever.
* InvincibleHero: No one stands a chance against Sunflash in a fair fight. Since Swartt doesn't fight fair, that doesn't really drag the book down.
* ItsPersonal: With Swartt Sixclaw, and how. The entire book boils down to a grudge match between the two of them that can be traced back to when they were teenagers.
* LargeAndInCharge
* MartialPacifist: His evolution from revenge driven kid to one of these is a key part of his character development.
* MasterChef: Loves cooking (and farming for that matter).
* OneManArmy
* ParentalAbandonment: Doesn't remember his parents at all really, and has no idea how he came to be Swartt's captive.
* TheProtagonist: Veil may be given top billing (and is the title character) in ''The Outcast of Redwall'', but Sunflash is clearly the main character.
* ReluctantWarrior: Eventually
* {{Retcon}}: After being named Sunflash in ''Mossflower'', he was named Sunstripe in all the other books he was mentioned in before ''Outcast''. ''Outcast'' cleaned this up and established that he changed his name from Sunflash to Sunstripe after defeating Swartt and becoming a MartialPacifist because Sunstripe was a gentler, less warrior-like name.
* {{Revenge}}: His goal, initially.
* WarriorPoet

!!Skarlath

* BigBadassBirdOfPrey: A kestrel.
* CarnivoreConfusion: Somehow gets along with mice, moles and other creatures that a bird of prey might consider eating.
* [[spoiler:KilledOffForReal]]
* TheLancer: To Sunflash.
* [[spoiler:SacrificialLion]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Sunflash earns this from him the moment he helps him escape from Swartt.

!!Swartt Sixclaw

* {{Archenemy}}: Of Sunflash the Mace, who maimed his sixclawed paw during his escape.
* ArchnemesisDad: From Veil's perspective, Swartt is this. Swartt, on the other hand, could not care less about his son, regarding him as little more than trash.
* ArrangedMarriage: Custom dictates that he marry the daughter of Bowfleg, the Warlord he slew to take command of the horde from.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassCape
** HandicappedBadass: Swartt may only have one hand, but is still a brutally effective fighter despite it.
* BadBoss: Though not to the extremes of some of the other villains, as he's at least smart enough to reward good behaviour.
* BigBad: Of ''Outcast''
* TheChessmaster: Swartt is a master planner and knows how to put all of his soldiers to good use.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: To everyone.
* CreepySouvenir: Wears a necklace of the teeth and claws of slain foes.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: His manipulation of Captain Zigu is particularly impressive. He outlines an attack plan ''knowing'' Zigu won't be able to resist sneering at it. When Zigu prompts him for a better idea, Swartt comes up with a revised plan, which just so ''happens'' to involve one of his captains leading a dangerous charge. Three guesses who the captain is.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: One of the rare obvious examples of this in ''Redwall'', getting near as much screentime as Sunflash.
* [[spoiler:DisneyVillainDeath: Gets tossed off a mountain after Sunflash smashes his head in]].
* EvilCripple: Has one dead paw.
* EvilerThanThou: Repeatedly.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: We follow Swartt on his journey from the leader of a small band of thieves and murderers, to Warlord of the entire country, witnessing all of the wreckage he leaves in his wake.
* TheHeavy
* ItsPersonal: With Sunflash.
* {{Its All About Me}}
* {{Lack of Empathy}}
* ManipulativeBastard: Swartt is a master of exploiting emotional weaknesses and turning situations to his advantage. To wit, there are more GenreSavvy characters in ''Outcast'' than any other Redwall book. Swartt outsmarts them all.
* MasterPoisoner: Typically offers his victims the chance to drink from a silver chalice, the inside of which is smeared with poison.
* [[spoiler:OffingTheOffspring: Kills his son Veil with a javelin]]
* ParentalNeglect[=/=]ParentalAbandonment: Hands his son Veil off to an old rat to raise after his wife, Bluefen, dies, than abandons him during a battle without a second thought.
* PowerFist: Fits out his dead paw with a heavy, spike-studded gauntlet that he uses as a club.
* RedBaron: The Pitiless One
* RedRightHand: One of Swartt's paws has sixclaws on it. It is maimed by Sunflash early in the story.
* {{Revenge}}: Seeks to slay Sunflash for wrecking his paw.
** RevengeBeforeReason: Swartt drives his army into the ground trying to kill Sunflash.
* TheSociopath: Textbook example.
* SmugSnake: Despite his posturing, Swartt ultimately lacks competence as a warlord, leading his horde from one misfortune to another, or martial prowess, being physically intimidated by no less than three tougher vermin warriors over the course of the book. He gets to the top and stays there through manipulation, vicious backstabbing, no small amount of sheer luck and Nightshade's help.
* TeensAreMonsters: Was bad even as a youth.
* UriahGambit: Used on Captain Zigu, who gets to lead the first charge against Salamandastron.
* VillainBall: He manages to capture Sunflash ''twice'', but instead of immediately killing him, he chose to let him live because he wanted to torture him and give him a slow, agonizing death.
* WeHaveReserves: How he directs the attack on Salamandastron. It gets most of his army killed.
* WickedWeasel: A ferret.
* XanatosSpeedChess: See DangerouslyGenreSavvy and ManipulativeBastard. He adapts very quickly to new situations in his ranks, and knows exactly how to make them work to his benefit.

!!Nightshade

* CloserToEarth: Then Swartt anyway
* CunningLikeAFox
* TheDragon: To Swartt. She's not a physical threat, but fear of her mystic powers keeps the horde in line, she's easily his NumberTwo, and [[spoiler:in the end, Sunflash has to get past her to reach Swartt.]]
* EvilGenius: Swartt's sounding board for evil plans.
* [[spoiler:FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Her death was so violent that it was treated as a GoryDiscretionShot. While the book made it seem like she was clubbed to death, The Redwall Wiki states that she was ''crushed'' to death]].
* HypercompetentSidekick: Swartt woudn't get too far without her [[spoiler: and she is the one who deals the biggest blow to the good guys, by killing Skarlath]].
* ManipulativeBitch
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After she [[spoiler:kills Skarlath]], Nightshade abandons her soldiers and her plan to kill Sunflash altogether and takes flight when she sees him gunning for her.
* {{Seers}}: Nightshade ''can'' see the future, and predicts it for Swartt. Her most valuable service to him, however, is the simple fact that other creatures acknowledge her as a seer, and will follow her words.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Swartt, whom she gives her absolute all to.
* VillainousFriendship: Type III. She's utterly loyal to Swartt and does everything she can to make his dreams a reality. While Swartt certainly values her as a useful ally, and goes out of his way to keep her alive so he can make use of her services, he does not care about her at all on a personal level.

!!Veil Sixclaw

* BigEater: Almost as much as a hare.
* CallingTheOldManOut: He does it to Swartt in style.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DecoyProtagonist: He isn't even born until Part 2 of the book, and he doesn't do much of importance until the end of Part 2; by then, the novel has already established that Sunflash is the protagonist, not Veil, despite the book's description talking about nothing but him. [[spoiler: He even dies in the end, and his death only impacted one character (a character who quickly got over it)]]. At best, Veil's the [[{{Deuteragonist}} Tritagonist]].

* ParentalAbandonment: Swartt ditched him at the side of the road without a second thought.

Meanwhile, the readers were too busy crying, because his final act of saving Bryony proved to everyone that he ''wasn't'' evil]].
* TheSociopath: Not nearly as bad as Swartt, but he still shows all the signs. The only one he cares about is Bryony, and [[spoiler:it took a threat to her life to make him realize it.]]
* StickyFingers: A kleptomaniac.
* SweetTooth: For the Friar's honey. It gets him into trouble.
* TeensAreMonsters: He shows all the signs of developing psychopathy.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: Possible reason for why he goes bad.
* TurnOutLikeHisFather: A major concern of the Abbey-dwellers. They know who Swartt is and what he's done.
* UngratefulBastard: He steals food and weapons from an old mouse and his two grandchildren, and then he repays Togget and Bryony for rescuing him from Brool and Renn by yelling at them and injuring Togget.
* VillainProtagonist: The only true example in the entirety of the Redwall series.
* WickedWeasel

!!Brool and Renn

* GenreSavvy: When Renn considers negotiating a ransom from Swartt in exchange for his son, Brool tells him that he'd be signing his own death warrant for taking Veil prisoner in the first place.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Renn gets speared by Veil. [[{{HoistByHisOwnPetard}} With his own spear.]]
* [[{{Jerkass}} Jerkasses]]
* KickTheSonOfABitch: They knock out Veil, torment him briefly, and eat most of his food. [[LaserGuidedKarma This happened on the same day Veil stole from three harmless mice and injured one of them]].
** Applies to them, too. They ''really'' do everything possible to put the reader off them.

!!Bowfleg

* FatBastard: One of his primary characteristics.
* FunetikAksent: Has an ''extremely'' thick accent, to the point where typical vermin accents look and sound pretty legible.
* GenreSavvy: He was smart enough to assume that Swartt would try to poison him with wine, and forced Swartt to drink it himself. [[PoisonedChaliceSwitcheroo Too bad he didn't realize the poison was already in the silver cup he drank from]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Due to his laziness, appearance, and gruff accent, most would assume he's just a FatIdiot. But he's actually pretty GenreSavvy.
* OrcusOnHisThrone
* {{Retirony}}: Inverted. Bowfleg and his army already had all the treasures and rewards they wanted and saw no need to terrorize the rest of Mossflower. It isn't until Swartt shows up and tries to persuade him to go back to his evil ways that he ends up getting killed.
* YouNoTakeCandle: He speaks the way sparrows do.

!!Wurgg the Spinecracker

* DumbMuscle: He's strong enough to lift Bowfleg's giant throne (with [[FatBastard Bowfleg]] sitting on it, no less) without even straining himself. Even Swartt is impressed (though he pretends to be more impressed than he is).
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast
* TheQuietOne
** BewareTheQuietOnes: Considering how huge he is, pissing him off wouldn't be a wise thing to do...
* RightHandAttackDog: He guards Bowfleg at all times, and samples Swartt's wine first to make sure it's safe for Bowfleg to drink.
* RodentsOfUnusualSize: Given his brute strength, he's probably the size of a badger or wearat.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: He says ''one word'' before he dies.

!!Greenclaw

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: He warns Bowfleg from the start that Swartt is dangerous. Immediately after Bowfleg's body is discovered, he rightfully suspects Swartt and hauls him in. He was even smart enough to call Swartt out on all his lies about how he didn't poison Bowfleg, and that he didn't know who Nightshade was.
* DeathByPragmatism: He's the only one of Bowfleg's camp who Swartt can't fool, so naturally he has to go.
* MookLieutenant
* TooDumbToLive: Inverted. Greenclaw was the only one who was smart enough to realize that Swartt and Nightshade were lying their asses off about what happened to Bowfleg. He ends up getting killed anyway before he has time to slay Swartt.
* WeHardlyKnewYe

!!Balefur

* AnAxeToGrind: A double-headed axe, no less.
* {{Badass}}
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: He was fully aware that Swartt poisoned Shang, and he knew that the ferret was a SmugSnake, so he constantly mocked and made a fool of him in front of his whole army in an attempt to overthrow him. If he hadn't been so greedy, he might've succeeded.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DeathByMaterialism: Gets fooled into walking into a quarry ''full of adders'' simply because Nightshade told him it was full of treasure.
* {{Jerkass}}
* SmugSnake: He's not as smart as he thinks he is, and walks straight into the trap Swartt and Nightshade set for him.
* TheSociopath
* VillainousBSOD: When he realizes he just walked into a quarry full of adders, he just stands still and stares at them in utter horror before they kill him.
* XanatosGambit: Attempted. If Swartt challenges him to a duel, Balefur's sure that he'll win. If Swartt ''doesn't'' challenge him, then he loses the respect of his horde, which makes it easier for Balefur to take over anyway.

!! Captain Zigu

* DirtyCoward: Sabretache calls him out on it.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He affects a gentlemanly demeanor, but beneath the mask, he's ''really'' unpleasant. Just ask poor Fordpetal.
* SmugSnake: He accepts Sabretache's challenge to duel, assuming that nobeast could actually ''beat'' him. Bad call.
* TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty: Oh, yeah. Beating a defenseless hare to death with the flat of his blade definitely qualifies. He also ends up resorting to this when dueling Sabretache.
* UriahGambit: He runs an almost successful one: His plan is to let Swartt get himself killed in the attack on Salamandastron, then take over the horde. Trouble is, Swartt has a counter-plan.
* YouJustHADToSayIt: He can't resist mocking Swartt's attack plan, which gives Swartt the perfect leverage to manipulate him into leading a dangerous charge. If he'd just kept his mouth shut, his plan might actually have worked.

* WhatTheHellHero: Sagax and Kroova rightfully get mad at him when he eats all their food during their trip to find Redwall, which almost led to them starving to death.

!! Princess Kurda

* BigBad
** BigBadDuumvirate: Teams up with Captain Plugg Firetail to go slay Triss, Shogg and Welfo.
** BigBadEnsemble: However, she DESPISES Plugg and acts on her own interests, thus filling one-third of this trope in ''Triss'', the other two members being [[{{Pirate}} Plugg]] and [[OurDragonsAreDifferent Zassaliss]].
** TheDragon: She's actually this to King Agarnu, who sent her and Prince Bladd after Triss in the first place...and to go to Mossflower to retrieve an ancestral heirloom that will confirm his right to be king.
*** DragonWithAnAgenda: She's not too happy about that. She has designs on becoming queen.
*** CoDragons: She and Prince Bladd have an equal chance of being chosen as their father's successor.
* [[spoiler:DeathByFallingOver: Dies after running away from Triss like a coward and falling on her own broken sabre.]]
* DirtyCoward: When it comes down to a one-on-one fight, with no guards to back her up, Kurda starts to panic.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Subverted. [[spoiler:Kurda doesn't shed a single tear over Prince Bladd after he dies, and Plugg Firetail calls her out on it]].
* EvilAlbino: As a Pure Ferret, she has white fur and pink-red eyes.
* InformedAbility: Subverted. While she's repeatedly called a master swordsbeast, we don't see many occasions of her fighting ability outside of practice, or against opponents who can fight back. [[spoiler: Her fight with Plugg Firetail turns into a grappling match in short order, and her "duel" with Triss [[CurbStompBattle is completely one-sided.]] ]]
* {{God Save Us From the Queen}}: In the climax, she reveals her intent to usurp her father and become this.
* {{Small Name Big Ego}}: She claims to be the best swordsbeast in all of Riftgard. Problem is, she never encountered someone like the Champion of Redwall before.
* SmugSnake: She talks a big game, but isn't so great when dealing with setbacks.

!! Prince Bladd

* EvilAlbino: As a Pure Ferret, he has white fur and pink-red eyes.
* {{Fat Bastard}}: Quite corpulent, like his father.
* [[spoiler:DeathByLookingUp: Gets crushed to death by a falling cauldron]].
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Speculated at by Riftun, who wagers he'd slip a knife between Kurda's shoulder blades if he had the chance. [[spoiler: However, not much comes of it before his death.]]
* {{Psychopathic Manchild}}: He's much more whiny and immature than his sister.
* {{Pyromaniac}}: He's rather ''eager'' to set fire to Redwall's gates, and sees to the attempt himself.
* SuperDrowningSkills: Just like his father, he can't swim.
* VagueAge: The book never says how old he is, which may explain his childish behavior. However, he's Kurda's ''older'' brother, and she acts far more mature than he does.
* {{Villainous Friendship}}: With the freebooters. He gets along rather well with them, [[spoiler: and Plugg seems to outright regret his death, saying he had more guts than Kurda.]]

!! Riftun

* CallBack: Most likely unintentional, but recall Ellayo Swifteye's words in ''Marlfox'': "Lightning has a way of finding knives." Or in this case, spears.
* TheDragon: To Princess Kurda.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: This is the first (and only) time in the series where a character is ''struck by lightning''.
* LightningCanDoAnything: Like fry him to a crisp.
* MookLieutenant
* TooDumbToLive: For some reason, Riftun thought it was a good idea to try and throw his ''metal''-tipped spear at Shogg in the middle of a violent thunderstorm.

!! Captain Plugg Firetail

* AFatherToHisMen: He's one of the nicest villains in the whole series, right next to Cap'n Clogg.
* AffablyEvil: With the Freebooters, anyway.
* [[spoiler:AlasPoorVillain: Both the readers ''and'' the Freebooters were devastated over his death. They even gave him a small funeral and openly cried over their loss.]]
* {{An Axe to Grind}}
* AttackTheTail: His tail gets cut off after Kroova and Shogg set a trap to sink the boat he, Kurda, and Bladd were riding in.
* {{Badass Longcoat}}: Wears a sea-green captain's coat.
* BenevolentBoss: Unlike a ''lot'' of other Redwall villains, he treats his crew pretty well. Sure, he berates them for stupidity, [[DopeSlap and kicks Grubbage in the rear whenever he gets fed up with the deaf searat mis-hearing his words,]] but he never kills any of them, either.
* BigBadDuumvirate: He and his crew of Freebooters are hired by Princess Kurda to go slay Triss, Shogg and Welfo.
** BigBadEnsemble: However, Plugg is clearly out for him and his crew's best interest, and plans on betraying the Riftard royals. Thus, he forms one-third of this book's BigBadEnsemble.
* [[spoiler:HijackedByGanon: Just as he finally decided to fight Princess Kurda, Zassaliss, Harssacss, and Sesstra, the three snakes who stole King Sarengo's crown and had been tormenting the Redwallers for a majority of the book, come out of nowhere and snatch the fox away]].
* RedRightHand: His tail, unlike the rest of his silvery fur, is a vibrant orange-gold. This gave rise to his nickname.

!! Grubbage

* KindheartedSimpleton: Bumbling, simple-minded, and prone to mis-hearing what others say...and he's a pretty nice guy, despite his profession.
* FatBastard: Averted. He might be fat, but he's actually one of the nicest members of Firetail's crew.
* PunchClockVillain: He's almost as nice as Blaggut from ''The Bellmaker''.
* [[spoiler: HeelFaceTurn: In the written epilogue, it's mentioned that he was received rather warmly by the Abbot of Redwall, and agreed to take part in the expedition to Riftguard.]]
* SenseLossSadness: Averted. Despite having no ears and being borderline deaf, Grubbage is perfectly fine with the way he is. Him mishearing everything his captain said wound up becoming a RunningGag.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Hmm, a seemingly friendly searat [[AntiVillain who is nowhere near as evil as the rest of the vermin around him]], and in the end, [[spoiler:his captain dies and he has a HeelFaceTurn and ends up being accepted into Redwall for his good behavior and kindness]]. Totally not Blaggut.
* VillainousBSOD: He (and the rest of Plugg's crew) suffer from this after [[spoiler:they watch their captain being dragged away by three adders while screaming for help]].

!!Ovus

* BigEater: He even accepts it as payment for undertaking a task.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's a greedy, gluttonous owl who [[MotorMouth talks too much]] and only assists the Redwallers if he's promised food in return. Despite this, he still cares about the Redwallers and other kindbeasts, and he stays true to his word whenever he promises to help them.
* PerilousOldFool: He and Bluddbeak [[TropeNamer named the trope]] in the incident below.
* [[spoiler:TooDumbToLive: So Ovus, despite the Redwallers' apprehension, decides to kill three adders along with his very old friend Bluddbeak, who can barely even see. By themselves.]] It ends as well as you think it would.

!!King Agarnu

* BiggerBad: [[spoiler:Subverted. He's ''supposed'' to be this, but he doesn't do anything but tell his children to go retrieve his father's crown. See OrcusOnHisThrone below.]]
* DirtyCoward: In the backstory, when his father was locked in a death battle with a monstrous adder, all Agarnu could think about was running and saving his own hide.
* EvilAlbino: As a Pure Ferret, he has white fur and pink-red eyes.
* {{Evil Cripple}}: His past expedition took one of his legs, which he's since replaced with a fish-bone variant of a peg leg.
* FatBastard: To the extent that he has his slaves carry him around on a litter.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: He does nothing in the book ''besides'' sit on his throne.
* PutOnABus: He doesn't make an appearance for quite a while after Triss, Shogg and Welfo escape from Riftgard. [[spoiler:Up until the end of the book, where he dies]].
* SuperDrowningSkills: He doesn't know how to swim [[spoiler: and ends up dying because of it. Being a FatBastard didn't help keep him afloat either.]]
* TooDumbToLive: A non-fatal example--he has a kingdom overlooking the sea, but no ships of his own apart from one that he commissioned to be built. When Triss and her friends ''steal'' that ship, he's left with no way for his guards to pursue them. Kurda even calls him out on it!

!! King Sarengo

* '''''AuthorityEqualsAsskicking''''': From what we know of him, Sarengo fits this bill more than any other villain in the series. He took on a [[OurDragonsAreDifferent fully-grown female adder]], alone and unarmed, and ended in a ''MutualKill''.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: See above.
* EpicFlail: Not that he ended up using it. [[DyingMomentOfAwesome Or needing it.]]
* EvilAlbino: A Pure Ferret, so he's required to be this.
* EvilVirtues: [[VillainousValor Valor.]] Most villains in Redwall would turn tail and run upon ''seeing'' an adder, never mind being disarmed by one. Sarengo? ''[[{{Determinator}} He kept fighting,]]'' even while dying from her venom.
* GeniusBruiser: He didn't just LeeroyJenkins his way into Berussca's lair, oh no. He scouted it out first, making a plan that would have worked [[SpannerInTheWorks if not for]] [[DirtyCoward his son Agarnu.]]
* MutualKill: With Berussca, an adder. Yes, [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking an ADDER.]]
* PetTheDog: While he lived his life as a typical EvilOverlord, he did treat Mokug better than other slaves.
* PosthumousCharacter
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Oh, [[{{Badass}} yes!]]

!! The Triplets

* BigBadEnsemble: Zassaliss forms one-third of it, along with Plugg and Kurda.
* BodyHorror: They're bound together at their tails by [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking Sarengo's]] EpicFlail. [[{{Squick}} Their tails are rotting.]]
* MultipleHeadCase: Not really, but they give this impression.
* NothingIsScarier: We don't know what they are for over ''half the book'', we only know that whenever they're seen, [[NightmareFuel somebeast starts screaming]] and [[TheDreaded others start running.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder: High Rhulain]]

!!Tiria Wildlough

* [[spoiler: AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: She's the chosen queen of a distant land. She's also quite the terror with a sling.]]
* [[spoiler: AwesomeMomentOfCrowning]]
* TheHero
* PlayfulOtter
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething
* SufferTheSlings: The only central protagonist to specialize in slings. She never even touches the Sword of Martin.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Like all otters, she's an expert swimmer.
* ThisMeansWar: Killed Riggu Felis for [[spoiler: murdering Pandion]].
* TookALevelInBadass: At the beginning of the story, she can barely fathom taking the life of another creature, even after witnessing her new friend Pandion being tortured by vermin. By the end of it, she had managed to [[spoiler: singlehandedly kill the BigBad of the book in the space of about four seconds]].

!!Leatho Shellhound

* AloneWithThePsycho: Twice when he's attacked by Kaltag. The first time she just tries to stab him while he's tied up. The second time, she winds up burning down the whole fortress to get at him.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Subversion. It's implied to bother him greatly that he's the last of his clan, but the cave that they used to live in is used as a good hideout for the free clans.
* TheHeart: Interestingly for such a tough character, he serves as the clans' main source of motivation for continuing their fight against Riggu Felis.
* HonoraryUncle: To Kolun Galedeep's babies.
* JustLikeRobinHood: Without the stealing part. He terrorizes the cats because they're evil bastards and is frequently referred to as an outlaw, but is easily one of the most heroic characters in the whole series.
* JustifiedCriminal: Labeled as an outlaw for trying to save a bunch of otters who are being kept as slaves by the cats.
* LaResistance: He's the unofficial leader of the free otterclans who are fighting to regain Green Isle from the cats.
* MakeAnExampleOfThem: Has this pulled on him by Riggu Felis after he's captured. He spends all of perhaps a day helpless in a cage, and then with Pandion's help manages to turn the tables quite nicely.
* OddFriendship: With Tiria, after comforting her when she learns of her friend Brinty's murder.
* {{Outlaw}}
** [[spoiler: RetiredOutlaw: As of the downfall of Riggu Felis and the cats. He's now free to just be a normal otter]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Justified, as he is the last of his clan left alive.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Applied with excellent results in-universe. Being such a good swimmer gives him a wonderful advantage over the cats, who are nearly all hydrophobic.

!! Big Kolun Galedeep

* AFatherToHisMen
* ActionDad
* BoisterousBruiser
* FamousAncestor: His last name would imply that he's from the same clan as Finbarr Galedeep of ''The Bellmaker'', but nothing is ever mentioned. Likewise, clans Wavedog and Streambattle are also mentioned, but no news on whether or not they are descendants of Kroova or Rab and Iris either.
* GoodParents: He is apparently an excellent father to his ten babies, and loves them dearly.
* HappilyMarried: Despite how fierce his wife is, he is very happy to be with her.
* HenpeckedHusband: Deedero sure doesn't give him any quarter...
* LaResistance: He serves as leader when Leatho's not around.
* LoveableRogue
* PapaWolf: It's not a good idea to threaten his family.

!! Deedero Galedeep

* ActionMom: Mostly indirect, as she never gets in on any battles, but her plans are effective.
** MamaBear
* AlmightyMom: She's described by Tiria as being less an ottermum and more of a force of nature. Kolun also remarks that Tiria will probably make her an officer due to how good she is at giving orders.
* ApronMatron
* HappilyMarried: To Kolun, despite how stern she is with him.
* HenpeckingWife
* ParentingTheHusband: A little, but Kolun is less a manchild than he is just very cheerful and irrepressible.

!! Banya Streamdog

* ActionGirl
* OneOfTheBoys

!!Cuthbert Blanedale Frunk

* [[spoiler: DyingMomentOfAwesome: Taking out a freaking ''[[StockNessMonster plesiosaur]]'' with nothing but a pike before being drawn into the lake after it. Definitely awesome.]]
* [[OneManArmy One Hare Army:]] Takes out a whole crew of searats in the backstory, and fights his way through an army of wildcats in the main story to get at [[DragonAscendant Pitru]].
* PapaWolf: A rather heartbreaking version. When his daughter was slain by searats, he went after them and slaughtered them all.
* SociopathicHero: He's not exactly ''normal'' in the head. [[TearJerker But considering that he lost his daughter, who can blame him?]]

!! Pandion Piketalon

* BigBadassBirdOfPrey: He's an osprey and is very fierce and warlike. He was also the one to destroy Riggu Felis' face, by way of latching on to him there with his talons and lifting the wildcat up until the skin simply couldn't handle the weight any longer and tore.
* TheDogBitesBack: Riggu Felis, Pitru, and Jeefra attempted to kill him for sport, and actually lodged an iron star-shaped missile in his beak. In retaliation, he destroyed Felis' face.
* [[spoiler: SacrificialLion]]

!! Brantalis

* CaptainObvious: Has shades of this.
* FunnyForeigner: Talks in an odd accent but is at least intelligible.

!!Riggu Felis

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Even his catguards don't like him. Even his ''wife'' is in complete contempt of him! The only one who genuinely seemed to care for him was Atunra, who was loyal to a fault.
* AnAxeToGrind: Favors this as his weapon.
* BadBoss: Flaying his disobedient minions alive? A-yup.
* BigBad: Of ''High Rhulain''.
* CatsAreMean
* DisproportionateRetribution: One bird tore off the bottom half of his face? Kill ALL the birds on Green Isle.
** MisplacedRetribution: Pandion was long gone, so Felis made do with all the other birds.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He seems to genuinely care about Atunra in return for her UndyingLoyalty, and when she dies, he vows to find her killer and make him pay. [[spoiler: As Yund eventually, horrifically, finds out]].
* [[spoiler: PrettyLittleHeadshots: When he's killed, the narration notes that there's just a hole between his eyes.]]
* {{Revenge}}: Is unique among Redwall villains with vendettas against good guys [[spoiler: in that he manages to exact his revenge.]]
* RevengeBeforeReason: He drops everything else during the final confrontation between himself and the otterclans because he just so happened to recognize Pandion as the one who'd wrecked his face. Rather than stay back where it was safe, he [[spoiler: ran out to the edge of the pier and hurled his axe at Pandion, killing him instantly. However, his close proximity just allowed Tiria to have that much better a shot at him]].
** [[spoiler: ATasteOfTheirOwnMedicine: Was given the same merciless end as what he gave to his final victim]].
* TwoFaced: Atypically for this trope, his face is split horizontally rather than vertically.
** FacialHorror: Attention is called to the fact that the lower half of his face is ''gone.''
* VaderBreath: He even looks like a medieval, feline Darth Vader.

!!Pitru

* AntagonisticOffspring
* CatsAreMean: Disrespects his father, murders his own brother, and berates his henchmen? Fits the bill.
* DirtyCoward: As quick to hide behind his mother's skirts as Jeefra whenever he thinks that Riggu Felis seriously intends to fight him.
* FoodSlap: He smashes a gull egg over Jeefra's head just to drive home the point how inferior Jeefra is in comparison to him.
* OverlordJr
* SmugSnake: He talks a big game but very few of his schemes are actually smart, and he tends to panic when things start going south.
* TheStarscream: To his father, Riggu Felis.

!! Jeefra

* TheBrute: Subverted. He's bigger and physically stronger than Pitru, but has none of Pitru's viciousness or will.
* DirtyCoward: Despite being a son of Riggu Felis, he's a cowardly crybaby.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: His death is what causes his mother Kaltag to go crazy and tensions to ''really'' get going between Riggu Felis and Pitru.
* SuperDrowningSkills: A lack of knowledge on how to swim coupled with being smacked over the head with an oar by his brother Pitru heavily contribute to his death.

!! Brinty

* BadassNormal: He's just a regular Redwaller who doesn't really stand out from the others, yet he manages to beat the leader of a gang of water rats to a pulp with his staff, and almost kills him until Tiria stops him.
* [[spoiler:DroppedABridgeOnHim: Gets unceremoniously slashed to death by Groffgut, who, up until this point, had been PutOnABus and was presumably nowhere near Redwall.]]
* [[spoiler:DyingMomentOfAwesome: Immediately before his death, Brinty helps the Redwallers shove ''a gannet'' out of the gates. Then Groffgut comes out of nowhere and cuts him down]].
* [[spoiler:KillTheCutie]]
* NiceGuy
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Subverted. Brinty almost killed Groffgut in a fit of rage, but Tiria snaps him out of it. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, he ends up dying because of this when Groffgut kills him later on in the book]].
* [[spoiler:SacrificialLion]]
* [[spoiler:TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: He wanted to be a warrior, but couldn't find it in his heart to take another creature's life, even when he had the opportunity to slay Groffgut for what some Redwallers would've seen as a justifiable reason. He ironically ends up dying ''because'' he didn't slay Groffgut]].

!!Gorath the Flame

* TheBerserker: Interestingly, it becomes [[CharacterDevelopment more and more subverted as the story goes on,]] as he learns to control the Bloodwrath.
* FarmBoy: How he starts.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: After [[BigBad Vizka]] belts him twice with his EpicFlail, a [[NauseaFuel hideous scab]] forms and eventually breaks off, leaving a permanent flamelike scar.
* LargeAndInCharge: Like all badgers worth their salt.
* [[LoveRedeems Love Kills the Bloodwrath]]
