[[folder: The Shadow Hand]]

The former Dark Hand, reorganized under Jade's leadership.

!!Jade Chan: The Queen Of All Oni

Jackie Chan's niece, who has had her Queen persona awakened by Daolon Wong after his attempt to summon Shadowkhan went awry, and now is out to find all the Oni masks.

----

* AchillesHeel: Onions, as typical for Oni.
* AffablyEvil: Jade's personality has changed very little besides having less morality and wanting revenge.
* AnimalMotif: Has a definite snake theme by this point.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler: After Paranoia is cleansed from her mind and Tarakudo is defeated]].
* AxCrazy: By the eve of the FinalBattle, she's completely lost it, being reduced to a delusional, paranoid mess.
* TheBadGuyWins: When it comes to the Teachings, anyway, as she gets her hands on all three tablets.
* BastardUnderstudy: Her current plan is to become one to Tarakudo.
* BenevolentBoss: To the Enforcers. In fact, she may very well be their best boss EVER. They fully admit even when she is angry at them she is still a much better boss than Shendu.
** It speaks volumes where when these guys are known to play the ScrewThisImOuttaHere card anytime something happens to their boss in the past. When something happened to Jade, they do all they can to rescue her.
** In fact, despite an obligatory "I will make you ''pay'' if you betray me to my enemies" scene, her firing the Enforcers was relatively civil, even giving them their possessions, money and their final payment before sending them off.
* BigBad
* BigEater: As per canon, though her transformation has caused it to increase several fold.
* BodyHorror: Her ability to contort herself into a snake-like shape.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Chews her father out for all the ParentalNeglect, and then [[IHaveNoSon disowns him]].
* CastingAShadow: The basis of her magic.
* TheChosenOne: Kuro suggests that she's something like this for the Oni, the result of Hiruzen's last contingency plan before Tarakudo killed him. Meanwhile, Blankman's comments suggest she's ''also'' the Chosen One of the Ben Shui order (as was implied in canon).
** Karasu confirms the latter, though also makes it clear that it's a moot point -- her fall to darkness, combined with her predecessor's premature death, has degraded the Grand Design to the point that even if she were to somehow take on the role, she'd no longer be able to maintain the balance.
** Kuro's theory is later confirmed as well [[spoiler: by Hiruzen himself. Though he's disappointed in how she's turned out]].
* ADarkerMe: [[spoiler: After Jade starts to mentally recover, she describes her corrupted psyche as this, with her flaws being ramp up and her positive traits repressed]].
* DarkMagicalGirl
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: Almost pulls this in Chapter 17, until Blankman convinces her that it's a GenreBlind thing to do.
* DoesNotLikeMen: She seems to be gaining this trait in recent chapters since [[spoiler: turning Viper into her General]], appearing to think less of men. She even snaps at Right calling him a "male" as if it was an insult. Both Right and Left seem to be worried about her after this.
* DrivenToMadness: Snaps temporarily during Lung's ColdBloodedTorture, and while she's mostly recovered mentally, is showing some signs of PTSD.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Trades out her normal outfit for a ninja robe topped by a BlackCloak and a circlet crown. Though she's ditched the crown ever since Ikazuki's coup, until she can prove to herself she deserves to wear it.
* EvilVersusEvil: Her conflicts with Valmont, Ikazuki, and Lung.
* EyeScream: When her astral form is being tortured by Lung, her eyelids ''dissolve''. This carries over to her physical body by having her eyelids turn transparent.
* FaceHeelTurn: Hers is what kicks off and drives the story.
* TheFarmerAndTheViper: She is willing to give villains that have fallen hard a chance to make something of themselves once again. Aside from a few trusted people, they all eventually try to betray her.
* FemmeFatalons: Her nails grow out into claws during her coma. She claims that it was the only good thing to happen during the whole thing.
* FingerTwitchingRevival: The first sign of her coming out of her coma is her hand curling into a fist.
* ForHalloweenIAmGoingAsMyself
* FreakOut: Briefly during the fight in the Vault of Endless Night, when Tohru accidentally recreates her encounter with Lung.
* FutureBadass: The Matriarch in Chapter 14 is [[spoiler:Jade's future self, having overthrown Tarakudo and become Queen of the Shadowkhan]].
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Is left with a scar across her forehead after Ikazuki slashes her [[spoiler: in order to curse her]].
** It is later magically removed by Hebi.
* HealingFactor: Her wounds heal faster and more effectively after her transformation.
* IHaveNoSon: Inverted, Jade does this to ''her father'', denouncing him and her mother.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: [[spoiler: After being betrayed and wounded by Right during the FinalBattle, she realizes she can't win anymore and quietly gives up.]]
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Does this a few times, but the crowning example has to be her TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Anton Mortimer, which touches on their [[VillainProtagonist respective]] [[BigBadWannabe positions]], among other things.
* MadeOfIron: Jade has become significantly more durable after her transformation.
* MundaneUtility: She once used one of her MagicWand fans to, well, fan herself.
** Another time, she summoned a Shadowkhan to ''vaccum''.
* OperationBlank: Tends to use RuleOfCool for her plan names.
* OurHomunculiAreDifferent: Creates one in Chapter 17 [[spoiler: which ultimately sacrifices itself to save Tohru from her, to her shock.]]
* ParentalNeglect: Suffered this, bordering on abuse.
* PetTheDog: A literal one. She wanted the Dog Talisman solely to destroy it and make her pet dog immortal.
* PragmaticVillainy: Avoids TakeOverTheWorld plots in order to avoid being defeated and [[SealedEvilInACan sealed]]. Even after she starts going after the masks, she still keeps this in mind.
* SanitySlippage: Is showing signs of PTSD after being tortured by Lung.
** It arguably hits a fullscale VillainousBreakdown after Tohru's failed attempt to capture her in the Vault of Endless Night, as she is now utterly convinced that the heroes (and humans in general) are determined to seal or kill her.
* ScaledUp: During the fight over the last mask, she creates a construct around herself in the shape of a giant version of her snake form.
* ScarsAreForever: Is left with a massive scar after [[spoiler: Right runs her through]].
* SquishyWizard: After her torture by Lung saps her physical strength.
* SuperStrength
* TheNoseKnows: Eventually develops a heightened sense of smell.
* TherapyIsForTheWeak: Shoots down Blankman's suggestion to see a therapist, but her apparent PTSD means this will probably come back to bite her ''big time''.
* TranshumanTreachery
* VillainousBSOD: When [[spoiler: Scruffy abandons her]].
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: Averted. She's searching for the Teachings of Eternal Shadow in order to increase her magical skill to match Uncle and Tohru.
* VillainProtagonist: The story focuses more on her point of view than any other character.
* VillainsOutShopping: Jade is often shown doing various non-villainous things when she's not busy fighting for the masks and tablets, such as video games and (on Halloween, obviously) trick-or-treating. She's also shown to take advantage of new developments for fun, such as pitting her tribe of Shadowkhan against Ratso's in a baseball game, or using her new contortionist skills to cheat at bets with the Enforcers, or using a Ninja Khan to ''vacuum''. Hell, she'll sometimes even find ways to have fun ''during'' her schemes, like the time she and the Enforcers raided a food stand at an amusement park she was attacking.
** During the Mini Khan attack, she and Hebi pig out on sushi.
* WeCanRuleTogether: Offers Viper a position as her right hand minion. Viper refuses. [[spoiler: She later decides Viper doesn't have a choice and brainwashes her.]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Has developed an aversion to bright lights ever since her torture by Lung.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Suffers big time for losing her ability to summon her Shadowkhan aside from Right and Left. But she still makes up for it by being very cunning.
* WrongGenreSavvy: [[spoiler: She seems to believe that Jackie and the others would treat her as any other demon they have faced and are trying to seal her or kill her, when all they want to do is free her from the darkness.]]
* XanatosSpeedChess: Has restructured plans rapidly when faced with new obstacles.

!!Left and Right

Jade's Shadowkhan bodyguards, who eventually gain sentience and distinct personalities.

----

* ArchEnemy: Right has become one to Viper.
* BattleButler: Serve as much as Jade's valets as her enforcers.
* BerserkButton: They do ''not'' like people hurting their mistress.
* BodyguardBetrayal: [[spoiler: Right stabs Jade]].
* CastingAShadow: Form their weapons from shadows.
* ChainsawGood: Left uses one on occasion.
* CharacterDevelopment: The longer they go as fully sentient beings, the more their personalities are fleshed out.
* CoDragons: Share position as Jade's chief minions.
** Though it appears with Hebi's arrival, her status as General has demoted them.
* CombatPragmatist: Left has been known to think outside the box in fights, and Right has no problem fighting dirty (even saying that honor has no place in war).
* DeadpanSnarker: Right seems to be snarking a lot, especially in the Halloween and Mexico City chapters.
* DualWielding: Left fights with a pair of broadswords.
* HypocriticalHumor: Left derides Hebi's kleptomania, only to then indulge in his own obsession with dynamite.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Right fights with one.
* MadBomber: Left, surprisingly. He likes the boom.
* MeaningfulRename: [[spoiler: Right goes by Ryuk after becoming a General]].
** [[spoiler: Jade renames Left Lee in the epilogue]].
* MinionShipping: Right seems to have a crush on Hebi.
* MookPromotion: The fact that Jade kept them around so often is what allowed them to evolve to sentient thought, as per the Shadowkhan life cycle. [[spoiler: This also lets them escape Ikazuki's curse that blocks Jade from summoning her tribe.]] They're eventually even allowed to remove their masks as a symbol of this.
* OnlySaneMan: Left is the only one who considers the possibility that [[spoiler: without Viper to help them]], the empowered Hak Foo actually has a chance to beat the J-Team, with the others waving away his concerns.
* ParentalSubstitute: Left is showing signs of this in his interactions with Jade.
* PassThePopcorn: Right and Hebi enjoy a bowl while watching Hak Foo FreakOut over the apparent uselessness of his Mini Khan.
* TheQuietOne: Even after gaining the ability to talk, Left rarely does unless he feels it's necessary.
* RunningGag: Left and his dynamite.
* ScarsAreForever: Left is left with a series of small facial scars from saving Jade.
* SealedEvilInACan: [[spoiler: Right is sealed with the other Oni when Tarakudo is defeated.]]
* StormingTheCastle: Assault Lung's fortress to save Jade.
* TheStoic: Left.
* SuddenlyVoiced: Their ability to talk comes out of nowhere, taking Jade by surprise.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Jade.
* UseYourHead: How Left frees Jade's astral form from Lung's magic sphere.
* VillainRespect: Shows admiration for the OldMaster guarding the final tablet, saying that losing a three-on-one fight shouldn't reflect on his skill.

!!Valmont

The former head of the Dark Hand, recruited by Jade to serve as the Shadow Hand's foreman. Eventually betrays Jade out of resentment, and is handed over to the authorities as punishment.

----

* TheConsigliere: Tries to focus the Shadow Hand on ordinary crime, but keeps getting overridden by Jade.
* HumiliationConga: Jade punishes him for his betrayal by having him [[ShamefulStrip stripped naked]] and dumped in a plaza ''full'' of tourists, which leads to him being arrested. And this is on top of the months he spent living as a common crook on the streets.
* NumberTwo: Of the Shadow Hand. Tries to act as the DragonInChief before turning on Jade, but that doesn't pan out.
* PutOnABus: Hasn't been seen for some time, last we heard, he was in prison.
* SpannerInTheWorks: When Jade orders the Enforcers to steal just the Dog and Horse Talismans, Valmont convinces them to steal all the others for their own use. Chow runs out of room to store the Talismans, one of which sets the alarms on when it falls to the alarmed floor. The Enforcers are able to escape with just the Dog Talisman, and while Jade is content with that, she's denied whatever she planned to use the Horse Talisman for.
* TheStarscream: Plots against Jade from the start, and ultimately tries to eliminate her upon getting Kaito's mask and control of the Ninja tribe.
* UngratefulBastard: As Jade points out, she took him off the streets and gave him a chance to regain his former glory, and he still betrayed her.

!!Blankman

A mysterious dark wizard who replaces Valmont as Jade's foreman.

----

* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: [[spoiler: Using the talismans he stole during the FinalBattle, he takes over the Magisters by force during the epilogue.]]
* BadassBureaucrat: Is basically Jade's accountant, but one of the most badass people in the story.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Is never without his sports jacket.
* BadassNormal: Rarely uses his magic in combat, preferring to rely on his ''savate'' skills.
* TheBadGuyWins: [[spoiler: In the end of the first story, he managed to steal all the Talismans except the Rat and Dog, and use them to take over the Magisters]].
%%* BaldOfEvil: Well, bald''ing'' at least.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Doesn't let battle affect his stoicism any or prevent him from making conversation.
* TheChessmaster: As revealed during the epilogue, [[spoiler: he was playing Jade all along so that he could undermine her place in the Grand Design and use her to steal the talismans]].
* CombatPragmatist: As shown in his fight with Drago, he will use his magic to beef up his physical skills if necessary. And if really desperate, he'll [[spoiler: resort to using a magic shotgun]]. Played with during his fight with Jackie -- he figures Jackie deserves better than being shot, but is willing to use his sword on him to compensate for Jackie's superior fighting skills.
* TheConsigliere: Focuses on balancing the Shadow Hand's finances, and tries to get Jade to do the necessary paperwork whenever she's not busy otherwise.
* CrypticBackgroundReference: He's full of these, due to his MysteriousPast and equally mysterious motives.
* DeathDealer: Focuses his magic through enchanted playing cards.
* DeathSeeker: Was apparently this in his younger days, apparently hoping that DeathEqualsRedemption for the actions taken as a member of the cult that raised him, until he found new purpose in life.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: His act of rebellion against the cult he was raised in was to kill the entity they worshipped. Which is strongly implied to have been [[spoiler: ''the Slender Man'']].
* DueToTheDead: After killing the guardian of the final tablet, he puts the corpse in repose, closes the eyes with coins, and salutes it.
* EnigmaticMinion: Is a very mysterious figure, and what little we learn about him only makes him more so. As of later chapters, Hak Foo and even Jade herself are realizing just how much of an unknown factor he is. [[spoiler: At least some of his true motives are revealed during the epilogue, but it's hinted he has much more planned for the future.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Appears to have several children whom he's close to.
* EvilOldFolks: Is in either his late 80s or early 90s and is a very dangerous villain.
* EvilSorcerer: He's usually not very flashy about it, but he's highly skilled.
* EvilerThanThou: [[spoiler: When Verde tries to assassinate him via LivingShadow, he kills the shadow, then tracks Verde down and forces him to sign a MagicallyBindingContract.]]
* EvilVersusEvil: Personally fights Drago during his rampage in the past.
* HumansAreSuperior: Feels this way, as he says during his TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Drago about demons and magical beings in general, essentially saying that they are sore losers who can't accept that mankind rules the Earth now. Though this brings up an interesting question -- why is he working for Jade then?
* KungFuWizard: As stated above, he has both magic and martial arts, and will use the first to amp up the second.
* MiddleManagementMook: His job is to manage the Shadow Hand's business affairs.
* MyCard: It's blank, naturally.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In a card game with the Enforcers, he openly admits to cheating (admittedly, apparently ''everyone else'' cheated as well).
** [[spoiler: He seemingly psyches out the Magister leaders by making them think that his depositing paperwork is him using his magic to attack them]].
* NumberTwo: Of the Shadow Hand. Referred to by trope name at least once.
* OlderThanTheyLook: A flashback to his childhood is set in ''1929'', yet he only looks middle-aged.
* TheStoic: Rarely shows emotion.
* SwordAndGun: Arms himself with a gun and a rapier before entering the Vault of Endless Night.
* TragicKeepsake: It's implied in story, and confirmed by WordOfGod, that his revolver is the same one his father committed suicide with.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Jade admits he's strong, but doesn't think he can stand up to Jackie. When they ''do'' fight, Blankman fights him fairly evenly (then again, Blankman is using magically enhanced weapons, and Jackie is too nice to play for keeps).
* VisionaryVillain: [[spoiler: Wants to bring about a world where humans completely dominate the supernatural, and served Jade in order to make sure the Grand Design would falter and fail]].
* WeakButSkilled: How Jackie feels about his fighting skills.
* WorthyOpponent: Feels Jackie is this, being willing to fight him on even ground, and after their duel in the Vault of Endless Night is interrupted, insists on a rematch when they next encounter each other in the Hall of Ice.

!!The Enforcers

The chief minions of originally the Dark Hand, then Daolon Wong, and now Jade. Somewhat good at what they do, but not that bright.

----

* AmbitionIsEvil: Finn wants to move up the ranks, and actually tells Viper he's a better villain than she ever was because of his ambition.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Ratso does surprisingly well during the fight in the Vault of Endless Night.
* DemonicPossession: When Chow wears Ikazuki's mask, Ikazuki overrides his mind and takes full control.
* TheDogBitesBack: Because of Ikazuki treating them like slaves, Finn helps the Chans defeat him.
* EvilPaysBetter: Finn once brags to Viper that they're probably being paid better than the J-Team for their efforts.
* EvilRedhead: Finn
* GenreSavvy: Ratso actively helps Jade during Valmont's betrayal because he knows minion coups never work.
** Also, after seeing Shendu betray his allies multiple times, they shoot down his offer to employ them again.
** When Jade fires them, the decide to quickly leave the country before Jackie and/or the cops show up.
* JokerImmunity: Jade lampshades this during the Mexico City chapter, saying that they have a knack for living.
* PutOnABus: Jade eventually fires them after she gets the second tablet, [[BenevolentBoss but gives them severance pay and all their belongings.]] [[spoiler: And then they get arrested.]]
* QuirkyMinibossSquad
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After Jade fires them, they decide to skip town, with plans to flee to Europe in order to finally escape the magic business. [[spoiler: Doesn't protect them from getting arrested.]]
* TerribleTrio
* ThrowTheDogABone: When Jade fires them, she allows them to keep their belongings and money, leaving them better off than they've been in a ''long'' time.
** [[spoiler: YankTheDogsChain: And then they get arrested.]]
* TooDumbToLive: When Jade decides to [[ForHalloweenIAmGoingAsMyself go trick-or-treating]], Ratso asks where she'll get a costume so late. Everyone else stares at him. [[ComicallyMissingThePoint He STILL doesn't make the connection]].
** Earlier in that same chapter, they hid to try to ambush the heroes in tarp-covered holes, in the desert, in ''mid-day''. Viper lampshades this.
* UndyingLoyalty: A smaller one. [[spoiler: After being arrested they refuse to reveal any information about Jade's whereabouts since she was such a BenevolentBoss]].

!!Hak Foo

A mercenary who has worked for both the Dark Hand and Daolon Wong in the past. Jade buys his services by promising to give him the power to fulfill his desire to be the best warrior there is.

----

* BloodKnight
* TheBrute
* CallingYourAttacks: Like in canon, lampshaded multiple times.
* DodgeTheBullet: When Wisker tries to shoot him during the HostageForMcGuffin exchange, he dodges it, and breaks the agent's arm while he's stunned.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Is disgusted by Valmont plotting against Jade, but since his agreement with her doesn't technically cover it, he doesn't inform her.
** He's also disturbed both by [[spoiler: Viper's forced transformation into Hebi]] as well as the depths of darkness and insanity that Jade is sinking into.
* EvilIsPetty: He takes El Toro's mask because he lost another chance at an Oni mask. Jade lampshades this.
* EvilRedhead
* FreakOut: Has one when, after all his complaining about wanting a mask, he gets the Mini Khan, which are apparently the most useless tribe. After seeing what they can do, however, he changes his tune.
* ItHasBeenAnHonor: [[spoiler: When Jade releases him from his contract, he gives a respectful bow before leaving]].
* NearVillainVictory: Comes closer to defeating the J-Team than almost anyone else in the story.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: His TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Jackie is what inspires him to snap out of his HeroicBSOD over [[spoiler: Viper's transformation]], allowing him to defeat Hak.
* NobleDemon: Tries to pass himself off as one. El Toro doesn't buy it.
* RunningGag: Saying "I wanted that mask" whenever one ends up on someone else.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler: When Jade frees him from their contract in the FinalBattle, he slips away in the chaos of the fighting and escapes.]]
* SocialDarwinist: Believes in the superiority of the strong over the weak.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives a combination of this and a MotiveRant to Jackie when empowered by the Mini Khan mask, stating that Jackie is weak for fighting for others, and how he intends to purge such weakness from the world with his army.
* TheUnfettered: Is willing to cast away his very humanity in his quest for power
--> "A building is only as strong as its foundations, and a warrior's strength is more than training. To break rocks apart with a human fist, you must have the will to do so. My will is rooted in myself, my ambition to be the strongest warrior in the world, to be peerless and be known by all as the strongest. Simple, strong, and unshakable so long as my vision remains unclouded by sentiment."

!!Hebi

The new General of the Samurai tribe, created by Jade [[spoiler: by killing Ikazuki and using his chi to brainwash Viper]].

----

%%* BaldOfEvil
%%* BrainwashedAndCrazy
%%* CoolBigSis: Acts as one to Jade.
%%* DarkActionGirl
* TheDragon: Her status as General seems to outrank Left and Right's position as bodyguards.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: After Jackie saves her life in the Hall of Ice, she feels obligated to spare his when she subsequently gets the upper hand.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Is utterly baffled when Jackie saves her.
* [[spoiler: FallenHero: Used to be Viper.]]
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Smacks Hak Foo over the head with her sheathed katana in order to snap him out of his FreakOut.
%%* KatanasAreJustBetter
* KleptomaniacHero: Inverted, she's a kleptomaniac ''villain'' who has a compulsion to steal things.
* [[spoiler: MeaningfulRename: Makes a point of changing her name, since she's not Viper anymore.]]
* MinionShipping: Flirts with Right, who seems to have a crush on her.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Her impulsive robbing of Courageous Conrad causes him to drop his neutral stance and aid the J-Team directly.
* PassThePopcorn: Enjoys a bowl with Right while watching Hak Foo FreakOut over the apparent uselessness of his Mini Khan.
%%* RedEyesTakeWarning
* ThatManIsDead: [[spoiler:Makes it clear that she's no longer Viper.]]
* TheTease: Turns out, she doesn't actually care about Right. She just likes to flirt.
* TranshumanTreachery: [[spoiler: Subverted. She is VERY specifically under massive, massive personality reconstruction. The 'She's not Viper' thing is literal. The REAL Viper is in her head, trapped.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Jade specifically designed her this way.
%%* WalkingSpoiler

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Oni]]

!!Tarakudo

The King of the Shadowkhan, who Jade intends to overthrow.

----

%%* AffablyEvil: As ever.
* BeethovenWasAnAlienSpy: Is eventually revealed to have once been the famed historical samurai [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minamoto_no_Tametomo Minamoto Tametomo]], before his deal with the Oni transformed him into one upon his death.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: How his mortal life ended -- surrounded by his enemies in war and deciding they didn't deserve the honor of taking his life, he stabbed himself.
%%* DeadpanSnarker: As per canon.
* DealWithTheDevil: Made one with the Oni when he was still human.
* DemonOfHumanOrigin: He used to be a mortal man called Minamoto Tametomo until he sold his soul to the Oni in exchange for power, and was transformed into one after his death.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Comments that Jade might be a good consort some day, but intends to let her grow up first.
** Uses up most of his power to save Jade from Lung, because he can't stand the thought of leaving one of his own kind to a painful death, despite the fact that he knows she probably plans to betray him.
* GreaterScopeVillain: is manipulating events from his prison, and Jade's ultimate goal is to overthrow him.
* HonorBeforeReason: The fact that he has (''some'' at the very least) honor is the ''only'' thing that kept him from killing Kaito himself, since killing an ally would be dishonorable. [[spoiler: When Kaito's spirit messing with Jade's head leads to Ikazuki's death and ruins any chance of an alliance between him and Jade, Tarakudo finishes him off for good, since he's screwed up bad enough that honor can no longer protect him]].
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: Jade is sure that the sealing of the Generals killed him, as that would be the only way such a mass sealing could work]].
* ManipulativeBastard: Enters Jade's dream in order to stir up her resentment towards her parents as a way of dragging her deeper into the darkness.
* OracularHead
* SealedEvilInACan: Is trapped in the shadow realm. He's finally freed by his loyalist Generals during the FinalBattle [[spoiler: and is resealed shortly after. Jade is sure that this killed him]].
* TheStarscream: To the Oni Elders, who he successfully rebelled against in order to become King.
* VillainousRescue: Uses up a significant portion of his power to teleport Left and Right to Lung's fortress in order to save Jade.

!!Kaito

The General of the Ninja tribe, Jade killed him by breaking his mask and absorbing his chi after he granted Valmont his power in order to betray her.

----

* AssholeVictim: He had it coming.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler: His spirit drove Jade insane in the belief that undermining her would impress Tarakudo. Instead, this ruined any chance of an alliance between them and indirectly led to Ikazuki's death.]]
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: The latest glimpse [[MentalWorld inside Jade's mind]] reveals that at least part of him has survived by latching onto one of the [[AnthropomorphicPersonification Aspects]] (according to Father, he's fused Fear and Doubt into Paranoia). He's pulled out during the FinalBattle, and KilledOffForReal by Tarakudo.]]
* YouKillItYouBoughtIt: Jade consumed his essence and gained power over the Shinobi tribe.

!!Ikazuki

The General of the Samurai tribe and Tarakudo's second in command, he briefly usurps control of the Shadow Hand from Jade.

----

* [[spoiler: AssholeVictim: After the way he treated Jade, no one was really complaining when Jade used his essence to turn Viper into the new Samurai Khan General, killing him.]]
* BadBoss: Treats the Enforcers like slaves, leading to them overthrowing him.
* BloodKnight
* CastingAShadow: Creates blades out of shadow so he and Jackie can duel.
* TheDogBitesBack: See HoistByHisOwnPetard.
** [[spoiler: Also, Jade later uses his essence to turn Viper into a general, apparently killing him.]]
* TheDragon: To Tarakudo.
* EverythingsBetterWithSamurai
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: He himself says he is unable to understand human nobility, and is surprised that Tohru would ''willingly'' tell him where the mask removal potion was to save Jade from pain.
* EvilSorcerer: Is highly skilled at magic, as shown when he [[spoiler: curses Jade to be unable to summon any of her tribe besides Left and Right]].
* HannibalLecture: ''Tries'' to give one to Tohru, but gets a ShutUpHannibal in response.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: He mistreated the Enforcers, so [[TheDogBitesBack they helped take him down]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Is cruel for no real reason.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Following Ikazuki's defeat, Jade admits to herself that he's right about her being a fledgling in the whole Shadowkhan business.
* KatanasAreJustBetter
* [[spoiler: KilledOffForReal]]
* NearVillainVictory: Is only defeated by Finn's interference.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: Dislikes Jade mostly because she's female. Though considering he helped overthrow the Matriarchy system, the attitude towards women is somewhat understandable.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Tarakudo's blue (ironically, since he has blue skin and Tarakudo has red skin).
* UndyingLoyalty: Again, to Tarakudo. He outright defied his master's order to stay out of the duel with Hiruzen in order to assist him. He afterwards reminds Tarakudo of saying that loyalty and obedience aren't synonyms.

!!Ozeki

The General of the Sumo tribe, he's a secret supporter of the old Matriarchy system, which he sees Jade as the inheritor to.

----

* BloodKnight
* TheBrute
* CutHisHeartOutWithASpoon: When Viper mentions using onions on Jade, he goes into a rage and threatens to "rip off your arms, and gouge out your eyes, with your own thumbs!"
* DemonicPossession: Thanks to a spell from Jade, is able to override Captain Black's mind and take control of his body.
* EvilIsHammy: Even Jade finds his... enthusiasm unnerving.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Thought Jackie would be taller.
* KilledMidSentence: [[spoiler: Is killed like this by Tarakudo when he tries to help Jade.]]
-->''"My tribe's dedication is-"''
* LightningBruiser: When he possesses Captain Black, he shows he is fast as well as strong (though Black's body ''is'' not nearly as bulky as ''his'' body).
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Matriarchy, and Jade by extension.
* YouExclamation: When he encounters Tohru, for some reason.

!!Kuro

The General of the Squid tribe, Kuro is an opportunist who is willing to serve Jade... ''if'' she can prove her right to rule.

----

* AffablyEvil
* DemonicPossession: Interestingly, he actually ''asks Finn's permission'' before taking control of his body, and returns control willingly once he's done.
* TheManInTheMirrorTalksBack: How he first communicates with Finn.
* [[MyCountryRightOrWrong My Species, Right or Wrong]]: Betrayed the Elders to Tarakudo because he believed the latter's promise of revitalizing their decadent race. Now, he says, if Jade can prove herself as a proper ruler, he'll do the same for her.

!!Hiruzen

The Eldest of Shadowkhan, he was killed by Tarakudo personally during his rebellion, though his spirit lingered on long enough to pass on a cryptic threat.

----

* AFatherToHisMen: Implied heavily to be this.
* BladeRun: He did this on Ikazuki's blade.
* CastingAShadow: He uses a SympatheticMagic like version, where he could attack a person's shadow and have the injuries reflect on the person's actual body.
* TheDragon: To the Elders.
* DragonInChief: Tarakudo barely beat him, but [[CurbStompBattle curbstomped]] them.
* TheDreaded: Was feared and respected by all Shadowkhan, loyalist and rebel alike, because of his power and experience.
* MonsterProgenitor: Was the first male Shadowkhan/Oni, created by the original female, Kagehime, from her shadow.
* OffWithHisHead: How Tarakudo killed him.
* OneManArmy: Tarakudo barely managed to defeat him, and only then because Ikazuki interferes.
* OracularHead: Briefly possessed his severed head in order to threaten Tarakudo one last time.
* PosthumousCharacter: Was killed long ago in Tarakudo's rebellion, only appearing in the story in flashbacks. [[spoiler: His ghost is still hanging around the Shadow Realm, however.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To his creator Kagehime, so much so that even after her death, he still serves the other female Shadowkhan despite their actions.

!!The Elders

A trio of female Shadowkhan/Oni who used to rule the species until Tarakudo overthrew and killed them.

----

* AnimalMotif: Snakes, like Jade (it appears to be inherent).
* BullyingADragon: [[spoiler: They see Jade as an upstart mongrel, and try to use her chi to restore themselves. She destroys all three of them for it.]]
* EvilMakesYouUgly: Implied by Tarakudo's reaction to seeing them to be hideous. [[spoiler: Confirmed during their confrontation with Jade.]]
* GlassCannon: While the magic snake they conjured to attack Tarakudo was impressive, due to their advanced age and decaying power, he was easily able to stop it and kill them.
* ImmortalitySeeker: They aspired to live forever by using pilfered chi gained with borrowing Shadowkhan to the use of wizards and lords.
* LaserGuidedKarma: In order to preserve their own dwindling chi, they stopped creating new Shadowkhan from themselves and started harvesting human souls to do so, which led to Tarakudo, who killed them. Lampshaded by Kuro.
* LoadBearingBoss: [[spoiler: After their death, the abandoned Shadowkhan city collapses into dust.]]
* NoImmortalInertia: Upon their deaths, their flesh turned to dust, leaving behind frail bones.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: Their spirits lingered on after their deaths, eventually gathering enough strength to try and steal Jade's chi to restore themselves fully. She rendered them DeaderThanDead in response.]]
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: The technique they used to extend their lives with stolen chi is explicitly stated to be an attempt to mimic jiangshi, a Chinese vampire that feeds on chi, one of which appeared in canon.
* PosthumousCharacter: Were killed the same time as Hiruzen. [[spoiler: Their spirits lingered on, until Jade finished them off.]]
* {{Predecessor Villain}}s: To Tarakudo and Jade.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Other Villains]]

!!Daolon Wong

An EvilSorcerer the Chans had faced on multiple occasions prior, but was ultimately defeated and sent to prison. He attempted to escape by summoning Shadowkhan, but ended up turning Jade evil again.

----

* TheArchMage: Was the Darkest Mage, the most powerful dark wizard alive. [[spoiler: His death has now left the spot [[EvilPowerVacuum vacant]].]]
* [[spoiler: BusCrash: After he's sent back to jail, he dies in prison of old age.]]
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: As Uncle lampshades, Wong ''knows'' friendship and teamwork exist, but cannot understand them.
* EvilIsPetty: Rubs it in the Chans' faces that even if he's back in jail, he's ruined their future.
* HumiliationConga: Gets overpowered by Jade, kept locked in a closet for weeks, gets sent back to jail, [[spoiler: tricked into helping the heroes, sent back to jail ''again'', and finally dies]]. You almost feel kind of sorry for the old bastard by that point.

!!Monsieur Verde

An EvilSorcerer specializing in shadow magic that Jade commissions a project from.

----

* AffablyEvil
* AscendedExtra: Started out planned for only two scenes, but was expanded to a recurring villain.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: [[spoiler: When possessing the Shadow Man's power.]]
* CastingAShadow
* EvilSorcerer
* EvilerThanThou: Tries to pull this by having Blankman assassinated. [[spoiler: Blankman pulls it on him instead, reducing him to service.]]
* {{Expy}}: Apparently it was unintentional, but he's pretty similar to Dr. Facillier from ''WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog'', which is why the author expanded his role in the tale (apparently he likes the film).
* LivingShadow: Has one after [[spoiler: absorbing the Shadow Man's power.]]
* VoodooZombie: Has two methods of creating these -- turning them into PeoplePuppets via parasitic tattoos, and sticking their souls into a [[SoulJar voodoo doll]] and taking control of their {{Empty Shell}}s.

!!Lung

Wong's former apprentice, who tried to capture Jade in an attempt to gain control over her and her tribe.

----

* [[spoiler: AssholeVictim: ''No one'' complained when Right killed him. One reviewer even called it ''justice''.]]
* BastardUnderstudy: To Wong. He tried to usurp his position once but failed, and has waited until his depowerment [[spoiler: and death]] to try again.
* BeardOfEvil: Complete with Fu Manchu mustache.
* BigBadWannabe: Sees himself as the next Darkest Mage and Jade as a minion, but his only plan fails utterly [[spoiler: and he dies]], knocking him out of the competition.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Puts Jade through it to try and break her to his will.
* EvilSorcerer
* FashionVictimVillain: Is considered this InUniverse by Tarakudo. And since he's described as looking like "[[ComicStrip/FlashGordon Ming the Merciless']] Goth cousin", Tarakudo might have a point.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Starts out kind of polite to Jade, if a little condescending, but quickly reveals his true nature.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: If only he had left Jade alone...
* {{Jerkass}}: Besides the ColdBloodedTorture he inflicted on Jade, when he was a child, he hid sticks around the neighborhood to beat up the other children with.
* KnightOfCerebus: He's only prominent in one chapter, but it's one of the darkest in the story, and his ColdBloodedTorture of Jade is what starts her SanitySlippage, which in turn is causing the story to start going down a dark path.
* OffscreenVillainDarkMatter: Has set up a series of safe houses and supply depots around the world, since when he tried and failed to take over from his sifu, he was forced to flee and lost all his resources, and didn't want it to happen again. [[spoiler: He never gets a chance to use them.]]
* SmugSnake: Is so utterly convinced of his genius that when his plan falls apart, he actually ''blames Jade'' for it.
* SquishyWizard: Is quite a skilled sorcerer, but useless in a physical fight [[spoiler: as proven when Right kills him]].
* TheStarscream: A failed one, he ''tried'' to take Wong's position and power by force one, but Wong "played possum" and forced him to flee, with Wong being defeated [[spoiler: and dying]] before Lung could try again.
* SympatheticMagic: Uses a lock of Jade's hair that he got in a trade with Verde to capture Jade (Left had been aware of the possibility, and had been burning her hair, etc. to try and prevent something like that).
* [[spoiler:UndignifiedDeath: Has his foot severed to keep him from escaping, and begs for mercy as he dies]].
* VillainousBreakdown: Starts cracking when his plan to break Jade fails, and falls apart completely when Left and Right attack his fortress.
* VillainsWantMercy: Begs Right to spare him. [[spoiler: He doesn't.]]
* XanatosSpeedChess: Wong's first lesson to Lung was "It's not how good of a planner you are, but how good you are when the plan fails", but Lung completely failed with that, since even when it's clear he's ''killing'' Jade, he just blunders along.

!!Drago

The son of Shendu, he spent some time as a student of the Matriarch (Jade's future self) before betraying her and traveling back in time in order alter the future to his favor.

----

* ArchEnemy: Seems to have this vibe with Karasu.
* BastardUnderstudy: Learned all he could from the Matriarch, and then betrayed her.
* BigBadWannabe: Tries to alter history to allow himself to take over, but ends up easily defeated by Karasu's intervention.
* CurseCutShort: When he is sent back to the future and, after a conversation with the future Jade, finds himself at the mercy of a group of Shadowkhan with metal bats.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: As Karasu points out, his own experiences with his father have led him to view family as a burden to only be used when necessary.
* EvilVersusEvil: Is rebelling against Jade's future self and aims to eliminate her present-day self, and briefly fights Blankman.
* GroinAttack: Blankman ''tries'' to do it to him, but it fails because he's a dragon and thus a reptile, which don't have external testicles.
* HumiliationConga: His repeated failures to alter history ultimately end with [[spoiler: being sent back to the future, where the Matriarch has him chained up and beaten with baseball bats.]]
* MakeWrongWhatOnceWentRight: Travels back in time in order to eliminate all potential threats to his own attempt to rule in the future.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: His dad's excuse for leaving him in the sword of Lo Pei (even chucking it over the Himalayas).
* PlayingWithFire: His fire breath, of course, but he also carries a few vials of {{Hellfire}} around as well.
* ReptilesAreAbhorrent
* SealedEvilInACan: Spent a few centuries sealed inside Lo Pei's sword before Verde released him in order to enslave him.
* TerminatorTwosome: With Karasu.
* UngratefulBastard: Lampshaded by both Karasu and the Matriarch -- she freed him from Verde's control and gave him a chance to redeem himself, and he betrayed her.
* VillainousBreakdown: After all his plans fail, he flies into a rage, saying he'll just smash everything in sight and see what affect that has on the timeline. [[spoiler: Fortunately, he's sent back to the future before he can.]]
* YouExclamation: When he runs into Blankman, implying they're enemies in the future.

!!Shendu

The Demon Sorcerer of Fire, and also a dragon and Drago's father. The first magical enemy the Chan family faced, he is currently trapped in statue form in Section 13.

----

* AbusiveParents: He threw the sword of Lo Pei, with Drago inside, over the Himalayas because he thought that it [[MiseryBuildsCharacter would build some character in Drago]] (Drago got the impression Shendu would have shrugged when he said that if he could).
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Lampshaded by the Enforcers when they break in to steal the Talismans, and they refuse his offer to free him in exchange for great rewards, instead leaving him to rot.
* DemotedToExtra: Has only made appearances in a couple chapters, and a few mentions elsewhere.
* {{Irony}}: He was locked up in the ''same room'' as the Talismans that could free him -- he can ''see'' them when the blast shield isn't down, but cannot do anything to get them.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Left his son sealed away centuries ago, now his son left ''him'' sealed away!
* RunningGag: People shutting the blast door on his alcove to shut him up.
* SealedEvilInACan [=/=] TakenForGranite: Is sealed in his statue form inside Section 13.

!!Anton Mortimer

An {{Otaku}} billionaire that buys a mask on auction.

----

* BadBoss: A contrast to Jade.
** PointyHairedBoss: It's clear without Mitsuki running his operations he wouldn't be as wealthy as he is. Not that he seems to know that.
* BigBadWannabe: Seems to think he's the ultimate, untouchable mastermind. Jade puts him in his place easily.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: After Mitsuki succumbs to the influence of the Crab Khan instantly, Uncle states the only reason is because she was secretly evil or had a lot of repressed rage. Mortimer thinks this means she was secretly evil. Jackie knows it's the other.
* CoolShades: Seems to be trying to invoke this with his visored sunglasses.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: The head of a Pacific shipping company, who has a large collection of stolen Asian artifacts in his possession.
* FatBastard
* FillerVillain: Something that Jade is quick to point out.
* {{Foil}}: He is one to Jade. He is a BadBoss with no supernatural abilities or martial arts skills, who thinks that he can use his money and connections to get away with whatever he wants, to contrast Jade's legitimate threat and BenevolentBoss tendencies. They also both have GenreSavvy, and tend to make LeaningOnTheFourthWall type comments, but Anton is a BigBadWannabe that's oblivious to his FillerVillain role while Jade is the VillainProtagonist.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Does this a ''lot''.
* {{Otaku}}: Oh yes.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney / ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Believes that both his wealthy status and contacts in the government not only protects him but enables him to threaten the J-Team.
* SmugSnake: Extremely overconfident, but ultimately not a real threat.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Is given one by Jade.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Thinks he's a lot more important to the story than he is.

!!The Shadow Man

The spirit of an EvilSorcerer who has long since been sealed away. Verde seeks to unseal him and take his power.

----

* {{Expy}}: WordOfGod is that he is ''not'' [[WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog Dr. Facilier]]. Any resemblance is merely coincidental.
* LivingShadow: Has been reduced to one.
* PredecessorVillain: To Verde.
* SealedEvilInACan
* UnPerson: All record of him, including his real name, was wiped away by his sealers.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Aspects]]

!!The Aspects

The Aspects are {{Anthropomorphic Personification}}s of the various parts of Jade's psyche that exist [[MentalWorld inside her mind]].

General Tropes:

* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Each aspect represent a different part of Jade's personality and mind.
* FisherKing: When Hero was the dominant Aspect of Jade's mind, the cloud seas were bright and white, and it was always day, but when the Queen took over, darkness started to overtake the mental world, and now Home is the only beacon of light left in a world covered in shadow.
** And as the Queen herself falls further under the sway of Paranoia, Jade's mind is consumed by a thick FogOfWar which appears to be further corroding everything.
** [[spoiler: When Father and Hero defeat the Queen, dawn finally breaks again.]]
* FisherKingdom: It appears that the state of the "Jade Sea" is dependent on Jade's mental state
* MeaningfulName: Not only are the Aspects aspects of Jade's mind, for many of the Aspects, their name is ''exactly'' what trait they represent, with "Mother" and "Father" being exceptions, with a few others.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: If an Aspect has red eyes and blue skin, that means they serve the Queen.

----

!!Hero

The embodiment of Jade's heroic tendencies and impulsiveness.

----

* CharacterDevelopment: It's hinted that he's going to start becoming more mature in the epilogue.
* CurbStompBattle: Defeats Mother easily (while ''chained'').
* DynamicEntry: Purposely invoked this by crashing his ship into ''The Jade'', even though he ''knew'' that it will break apart if he did!
* GoshdangItToHeck: At one point Hero actually ''says'' "Censorship bleep"!
* TheHero: His physical appearance is based on the protagonist of an old adventure movie Jade saw once, and represents her heroic nature.
* LargeHam
* LeeroyJenkins: He seems to represent Jade's tendency to rush into things.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Father says that Jade's corruption is his fault, since it was Hero who made Jade tattoo the Mark of Tarakudo just to look cool.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Father's blue.
* SealedGoodInACan: The Queen eventually locks him up in the hold. Father helps him escape during the FinalBattle.

!!The Queen

The embodiment of Jade's SuperPoweredEvilSide.

----

* BodyHorror: After being made a literal Puppet Queen by Paranoia.
* TheCorruption: Is the embodiment of the dark chi corrupting Jade's psyche.
* DimensionLord: Now has near total control over Jade's mind.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Apparently she is trying to use Paranoia to increase her power; Father basically likens it to playing with fire.
** By the eve of the FinalBattle, this appears to have finally backfired, as Paranoia seems to have usurped control and reduced her to a [[PuppetKing Puppet Queen]]; the climax itself confirms this.
* OneWingedAngel: Coats herself in shadow to become even more powerful.
* PuppetKing: By the time the final battle rolls around, she and her forces are weakened and corrupted, and Paranoia has effectively taken her over completely. Father even lampshades how she seems to literally have become Paranoia's puppet.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: Represents Jade's.
* TheStrategist: Jade has become more of a strategist after her takeover, implying she is this.
* VillainousBreakdown: Like Jade herself, she completely loses it by the FinalBattle.

!!Father

The embodiment of Jackie's influence on Jade.

----

* ArchEnemy: Hero considers him his.
* EnemyMine: Subverted. Hero tried to recruit him to help fight the Queen, but he refused. [[spoiler: They do team up during the FinalBattle, however.]]
* NotSoStoic: Shows genuine sorrow when Hero is captured by the Queen.
* ParentalNeglect: Seems to partially represent this, as he is never found at the representation of the apartment Jade lived in with her parents in China.
** ParentalSubstitute: As it turns out, it seems he actually represents Jackie's influence on Jade, as he looks just like him.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives a scathing one to Hero, saying that his influence is ultimately just as harmful to Jade
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Hero's red, as he represents restraint, repression, and generally being obedient and taking the safe path. Hero claims that if Father had been in charge, Jade would never have accomplished anything.
* TakeUpMySword: Ends up with Hero's hat after Hero is captured.
* YouAreInCommandNow: [[spoiler: Takes over Jade's mind following the FinalBattle.]]
* YouShallNotPass: Calmly denies the Queen the chance to conquer Home.

!!Mother

The embodiment of the influence Jade's parents have had on her, and her views of them.

----

* {{Abusive Parent|s}}: Represents Jade's views of her parents, and is quite aggressive.
* TheBlank: Half example, as she has eyes, but no mouth.
* CurbStompBattle: Is easily defeated by Hero (while he was in chains, no less).

!!Desire/Greed

The embodiment of Jade's desires and wants.

----

* TheCavalry: [[spoiler: Just when Father and Hero are risking failure in defeating the Queen, she shows up to help restrain her.]]
* CrypticConversation: Has one with Jade when Lung's ColdBloodedTorture causes her to briefly snap, where she claims that Jade is deluding herself to her true desires.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Her position among the Queen's forces is never really stated, but she is seen apparently working with Father and Science now, saying that while Father wouldn't be her first choice as ruler, he brings Jade closer to her desire than Hero and the Queen.
* {{Expy}}: Jade likens her appearance to a female Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face).
* {{Greed}}: The AnthropomorphicPersonification of Jade's.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Is a literal version of this, as one half of her body is human, and the other is Shadowkhan.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: In the epilogue, she reveals that Jade's true desire is [[spoiler: to feel like she belongs and is loved for who she is, with the added twist of feeling the same way about herself.]] Hero points out that she already ''had'' that, with Desire noting the fact.
* InsistentTerminology: Hero called her Greed, but she insists the proper term is Desire.

!!Ambition

The embodiment of Jade's ambitions.

----

* AmbitionIsEvil: Has allied with the Queen.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Apparently her armor is somewhat fragile.
* CoDragons: Apparently with Fury to the Queen.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Hero mentioned that she used to look like Jade wearing Captain Black's outfit. Now she wears a modern-day gold-colored general's hat and classical Chinese armor adorned with jewels.
* EvilMakesYouUgly: Paranoia's influence has rendered her uglier, her armor cracked and tarnished, and what might be ''bone'' visible on her scalp.

!!Science

The embodiment of Jade's scientific knowledge.

----

* {{Cyborg}}: Is a steampunkish version.
* GeniusBruiser: Represents Jade's scientific knowledge (which she has a surprising amount of), but was able to hold his own in the battle, mainly with Fury.
* NumberTwo: Hero's first mate.

!!Prissiness

The embodiment of Jade's stuck up attitude.

----

* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: Complains (loudly) to Hero, despite him rescuing her.
* SpoiledBrat

!!Love

The embodiment of Jade's sense of romantic love.

----

* RunningGag: The barrel she's in getting tossed into the water.
* SealedGoodInACan: Doesn't seem to be evil, but the other Aspects keep her locked up in a barrel marked "pickled yams" (apparently, this reflects the author's view on shipping).
* TakeThat: See SealedGoodInACan.
* YouCantFightFate: Her final appearance in the epilogue has her claim that it's inevitable that she'll get loose and give Jade an epic love.

!!Whimsy

The embodiment of Jade's sense of fantasy.

----

* CloudCuckooLander[=/=]TheDitz

!!Fury

The embodiment of Jade's anger.

----

* AxCrazy: Wears a straightjacket.
* TheBrute: Very violent (duh).
* CoDragons: Apparently with Ambition to the Queen.

!!Paranoia

A new Aspect, created by the fusion of Jade's Fear and Doubt, and a symptom of her deteriorating mental state.

----

* TheCorruption: By the time of the final battle, the Queen's aspects have been completely twisted by her into corrupted and weakened versions of herself, the Queen pretty much her literal puppet.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: If not an outright [[TheStarscream Starscream]], as she's implied to be manipulating the Queen for her own ends.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Father claims this in regards to the Queen using her to try to further her control.
* FogOfWar: Is causing one to shroud Jade's MentalWorld, further degrading her judgement and perceptions.
* FusionDance: Is the result of Fear and Doubt being fused together [[spoiler: by Kaito's chi. When he's removed, they split apart again.]]
* TheVirus: Father deliberately likens her to a disease.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Heroes]]

The {{Hero Antagonist}}s to Jade's VillainProtagonist. Jade's former family and friends, out to save her from evil by any means they can.

!!Jackie Chan

Jade's uncle, an AdventurerArchaeologist dragged into a series of quests to save the world, now desperately trying to save his niece from herself.

----

* ApologeticAttacker: Usually apologizes to Jade when attacking her.
* HeroicBSOD: Has a moderate one after Jade's transformation, but has a much worse one after [[spoiler: Viper is transformed into Hebi]] that almost cripples him during his fight with the masked Hak Foo.
** EpiphanyComeback / HesBack: Fortunately, Hak Foo's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech reminds him what he's fighting for, and snaps him out of it.
* ParentalSubstitute: Uncle points out that he's "Jade's father in all but blood", even if neither of them is aware of it.
** This goes even further when it's revealed that "Father", one of the AnthropomorphicPersonifications inside Jade's mind, looks ''exactly like him''.
* SaveTheVillain: Saves Hebi from a DisneyVillainDeath in the Hall of Ice, much to her shock. [[spoiler: Justified, as she's a brainwashed Viper, after all.]]
* ScrewDestiny: Ultimately decides this about Karasu's OminousMessageFromTheFuture, saying that even if what the Shadowkhan says is true, he knows history can be changed.
* WorthyOpponent: How Blankman feels about him.

!!Uncle

ThePatriarch of the Chan family, he is a master chi wizard who owns an antique shop in San Francisco.

----

* BerserkButton: Is thoroughly ''pissed'' at Shen for walking out on his responsibility to help Jade.
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: Early on, he refuses to let Viper join the team because he doesn't want help from a thief. However, he later changes his mind.
* BringIt: To Blankman during their fight outside the Hall of Ice.
* ItsAllMyFault: Blames himself for Jade's return to darkness by failing to remove the scar on her chi from the last time it happened.
* ThePatriarch: Refers to himself as such to the family at one point.
* TenMinuteRetirement: Like in canon, he briefly decides to leave the mask hunt when he thinks he's not needed, but quickly comes back.

!!Tohru

A former member of the Dark Hand, Tohru had a HeelFaceTurn during the show, and is now a trusted ally of the Chans and Uncle's apprentice in magic.

----

* TheAtoner: Sees saving Jade from the dark side as another act of redemption for his previous evil ways.
* BeamOWar: Against Jade in the Hall of Ice. He loses.
* DefiantToTheEnd: When it looks like Jade is going to kill him in the Hall of Ice, he uses what might be his last moments to continue to try and get through to her through the darkness and her madness.
* EleventhHourSuperpower: During several fights wherein the J-Team is on the verge of defeat, he suddenly manifests new chi abilities that help them win.
* HarmfulHealing: [[spoiler: His using good chi to heal Jade after Right stabs her works, but the sheer pain the spell causes jolts her awake]].
* MagicEye: One of the above mentioned abilities, which lets him see the flow of the world's chi.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: His attempt to capture Jade in the Vault of Endless Night seems to have been the last straw for her sanity, as she's now convinced that the heroes want to seal or kill her.
* ScarsAreForever: Jade slashes his face during the fight in the Vault of Endless Night. Judging by Karasu and Drago's comments [[{{Foreshadowing}} a few chapters earlier]], the resulting scars are never going to fade.
* ShutUpHannibal: Gives one to Ikazuki.
* WizardDuel: Against Jade in the Hall of Ice.

!!Viper

A former cat burglar who changed her ways after meeting Jackie and Jade, she is loyal ally.

----

* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:Hebi implies that what's left of Viper is fully aware of what her body is doing, but is powerless to stop it]].
* BadassInDistress: Gets taken prisoner by the Shadow Hand a few times (which Paco lampshades) [[spoiler: culminating in being changed into Hebi.]]
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' mess with her hair. Ozeki learned this the [[GroinAttack hard way]].
* [[spoiler: BrainwashedAndCrazy: Jade captures her and force feeds her Ikazuki's chi, transforming her into Hebi.]]
* CloseCallHaircut: Ozeki accidentally rips a chunk of her hair out when his fist just barely misses her head.
** TraumaticHaircut: A while later, Right cuts off most of her hair after defeating her as a trophy [[spoiler: and because Jade needs it for something]].
*** Shortly after ''that'', Chow accidentally shaves off a clump of her remaining hair during the fight in the Vault of Endless Night.
*** ''Finally'', [[spoiler: Jade has ''all'' her hair shaved off when she sets up the ritual to force her FaceHeelTurn.]] Viper was ''not'' pleased when she woke up and realized that.
* CombatPragmatist: Sneaks attacks whenever she can. Eventually starts using a blade in her fights with Right.
* CrazyPrepared: Always carries some onions around in case they run into Jade or her minions. It's been commented she's started smelling like them. After she starts using a blade, she cuts onions with it so it will be extra effective on Oni.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She may be a (former) thief, but she refuses to join Jade.
* [[spoiler: FaceHeelTurn: Jade manages to capture her and use Ikazuki's essence to transform her into the new Samurai Khan General, Hebi.]]
* FragileSpeedster: As pointed out by Right, she's fast, but can't really take any hits.
* GroinAttack: Uses brass knuckles to give this to Ozeki (when he's possessing Captain Black).
* SixthRanger: Joins the team part way through the story, taking Jade's place as the rule breaker thinking outside the box.
** [[spoiler: SixthRangerTraitor: Though [[BrainwashedAndCrazy not by choice]].]]
* [[spoiler: TranshumanTreachery: Subverted. Her FaceHeelTurn is caused by her transformation into a Shadowkhan...and massive brainwashing.]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Is ''not'' happy to see the BigCreepyCrawlies in the Vault of Endless Night.

!!El Toro

A Mexican masked wrestler who once abused the powers of the Ox talisman, El Toro is now one of Jackie's strongest and most loyal allies.

----

* BarehandedBladeBlock: Pulls this on Right at one point.
* BerserkButton: Don't hurt children in his presence. Or tell him wrestling is fake.
** Shen Chan's refusal to stay and help Jade also ''really'' gets him riled up.
* HonorBeforeReason: Is so determined to restore his luchadore honor by winning the championship without magical aid that he doesn't aid in going after Jade. Paco calls him out on this [[spoiler: which convinces him to change his mind]].
* PapaWolf: To Paco.
* SixthRanger: Joins the rest of the team about halfway through the story.

!!Paco

El Toro's biggest fan and personal apprentice.

----

* CallingTheOldManOut: Calls ''El Toro'' of all beings out on his HonorBeforeReason mentality.
* HeroicLineage: Nameless suggests that he's descended from Nameless' former champions.
* ItsAllMyFault: Blames himself for the Shadow Hand getting Kuro's mask, since he took it from the protection of Uncle's shop.
* SixthRanger: Joins the team the same time as El Toro.
* TagalongKid: Jade mocks him for still being this.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Surprisingly gives one to Hak Foo, stating that he's not a NobleDemon but a fraud who will never be the true warrior that El Toro is.
--> "You are a fraud! You call yourself a true warrior, yet you take pride in serving wicked men! You have no true loyalty, serving any master that can rent you! And you have no respect for true strength, eager to take the quick and easy path with dark magics! You have no place among the mighty! El Toro Fuerte lies struck down by a cowardly attack by your leeches, and yet he is worthy many times over. Because he had the strength to give up the false strength of magic, even after being its slave for so long. You, who would so eagerly put on the chains he broke free of, you must climb so high otherwise you would have to look up at even beggars like the miserable bug you are!"
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: His reaction to the giant paper airplane Blankman uses to escape the Vault of Endless Night.
-->"You can't be serious?"

!!Captain Black

The head of Section 13 and an old friend of Jackie's.

----

* TheCaptain
* CrazyPrepared: Has set up a Plan B to deal with Jade in case Jackie fails. [[spoiler: It apparently involves a reanimated Lo Pei]].
* DemonicPossession: A spell from Jade allows Ozeki to overpower his mind and take direct control of his body.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure

!!Wisker

Captain Black's chief field agent.

----

* BlackAndWhiteMorality: Doesn't care who Jade used to be; to him, she's just another criminal who needs to be stopped.
** He also nearly sabotages a HostageForMacGuffin exchange (Ozeki's mask for Viper) by replacing the mask with a fake, because he doesn't see a thief like Viper as worth the risk.
* CombatPragmatist: Actually tries to ''shoot'' Jade and Hak Foo on two different occasions. It doesn't work, but he deserves points for trying.
* NumberTwo: Isn't Captain Black's actual second in command, but appears to be his top agent and go to guy.
* OhCrap: When he realizes Hak Foo has just [[DodgeTheBullet dodged the bullet]], and is about to break his arm.
* PunnyName: His name is Wisker, but everyone hears "Whisker" and notes his large sideburns.
* RunningGag: He keeps saying they should make knocking the bad guys out standard procedure.
* StraightMan: To the other heroes.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: He shoots Jade non-fatally multiple times to delay her, then ''tries'' to shoot Hak Foo (but he dodges).

[[folder: Others]]

!!Drew

A bully from Jade's school.

----

* TheAtoner: The epilogue reveals that he's been trying to make up for his bullying.
* {{Jerkass}}
* LackOfEmpathy: He doesn't care about the feelings he hurts with his insults, and even blames ''them'', [[NeverMyFault that it's their fault for making it so easy, and being thin-skinned]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: He taunted Jade about her stories, and is a {{Jerkass}} to her and others, now she's tormenting him and making sure no one believes him.

!!The Three Sages

Three monks descended from the order that sealed the Oni away in the masks.

----

* BadassNormal: Show no sign of any magic, but still win without contest. [[spoiler: They're even capable of going toe-to-toe with the freed Generals]].
* CavemenVsAstronautsDebate: Dark and Gray have one about whether a door's presence means it should be closed.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Grey definitely comes across as this.
* CurbStompBattle: Wipe the floor with the J-Team ''and'' the Shadow Hand ''at the same time''.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Brother Dark isn't evil, he just helps balance things among the three of them.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: White sends Dark away and fights the Generals alone, so that Dark at least will survive.]]
* HoldTheLine: Against the Oni Generals' advancing darkness during the FinalBattle. [[spoiler: White and Grey don't survive it.]]
* MacGuffinGuardian: Guard one of the three Teachings of Eternal Shadow tablets.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler: White managed to kill one of the Oni Generals]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: An offhand comment reveals that Brother White is at least three hundred years old. WordOfGod is that this isn't magic; he's just ''that'' good at taking care of himself.

!!The Shadowbinding Sage

The monk who created the Oni masks, which were then used by his disciples to seal them away.

----

* TheAtoner: Was once a brutal enforcer of a warlord, but was forgiven and dedicated himself to making amends.
* CuriosityCausesConversion: After his downfall, the very three persons who played a role in his downfall came and helped him when no-one else would. His resulting amazement and curiosity set him on his path to redemption.
* HeelFaceTurn: See TheAtoner.
* HeroicSacrifice: Used his own life force to finish the masks.
* HumiliationConga: He was undefeated until a good man laid him low. When he raided a temple to kill the good man in his time of sickness, the priest defeated him and left him in the mud. He then tried to burn the temple during nighttime, but a woman outwitted him and set fire to his horse in front of his men. It was shortly after this that he was condemned for his crimes and abandoned by everyone until his defeaters helped him.
** It should also be noted that the Sage was helped on his feet by the three persons who played a role in his downfall. Those three persons were similar to Jackie (a good man), Jade (a GuileHeroine) and Uncle (a priest).
* UngratefulBastard: When the good man who defeated him yet spared him got sick, he tried to kill him to the point of invading a temple.

!!Kagehime

The first female Shadowkhan and mother of the species.

----

* BigEater
* CreatingLifeIsUnforeseen: Her creating Hiruzen from her shadow was an accident (she had never seen a shadow before, and she thought it was a an actual being, and male, which is why he became so).
* HalfHumanHybrid: Was the daughter of Izanami (a human-like goddess) and the lord of the underworld.
* TheLostLenore: The way Hiruzen speaks of her implies that she was this to him.
* MonsterProgenitor: As mentioned above, she is the first Shadowkhan.
* ParentalNeglect: Her mother is corrupted by the underworld after her birth, so Kagehime grew up without parental affection.
* PosthumousCharacter: Is long dead even by the time of the flashbacks to Tarakudo's rebellion.

!!Karasu

A sentient Shadowkhan from the future, sent back by the Matriarch to prevent Drago from altering history.
----
* AnimalMotif: Is said to have bird-like features.
%%* ArchEnemy: To Drago.
* BattleButler: Apparently holds the same position to the Matriarch's daughter that Left and Right hold in the present.
* LegacyCharacter: He is apparently named after a important figure from Shadowkhan history.
* NoodleIncident: Is surprised when the Matriarch's transport spell actually sends him back in time successfully to where he wanted to go, mentioning "the bull" as the most memorable of numerous occasions where it did NOT.
* ScarsAreForever: Has small scars on his face.
* TheSlowPath: [[spoiler: How it seems he's destined to return to the future, since he used up all his return potion on Drago. The epilogue shows him choosing an out-of-the-way place to hide as he waits it out.]]
%%* TerminatorTwosome: With Drago.
%%* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Drago.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Matriarch and her daughter.

!!The Matriarch

A future version of Jade from the timeline Drago and Karasu come from, she had Drago as a student for a time, but the UngratefulBastard betrayed her and tried to alter history for his favor, so she sent Karasu after him. Not much else is known about her, save the fact that she's still in control of at least the Shinobi tribe, and has a daughter.
----
* AnimalMotif: Like present-day Jade, snakes. She even has a snake as a {{Familiar}}.
* BadFuture: Possibly. She's still a Shadowkhan at any rate, and we only see a small part of the future, but her existence does ''not'' bode well for the efforts of the heroes.
* {{Familiar}}: Seems to have one in the form of a snake named Mohinder.
* FutureMeScaresMe: Well, the thought of her scares Jackie and the others.
* HumanoidAbomination: Appears to have permanently taken the form of a naga.
* MamaBear: You do ''not'' threaten her daughter (or likely anyone else she cares about). The fact that her daughter's BattleButler was strong enough that she felt he was the best choice to send after Drago speaks volumes about this.
** She also has Drago brutally beaten by Shadowkhan with metal bats and imprisoned after he's sent back for threatening her family's existence, then put in one of the "good" cells (and she considers that ''merciful'').
* PrehensileHair
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Drago about his plan to change the past for his favor, calling it "cliche".

!!The Cuban

A crime boss from Mexico City.
----
* TheDon: One of several, but he appears to have seniority.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Works hard to keep the evils sealed in the Vault of Endless Night from being accidentally released.
* PragmaticVillainy: Refuses to get into a turf war with the Shadow Hand, as he figures it's too dangerous to fight them, and that it's a win-win situation whether they succeed or fail anyway.

!!Ramirez

A former police officer from Mexico City.

----

* BackForTheFinale: Reappears in the epilogue to recruit El Toro to fight the new evils on the horizon.
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: Though not as strictly as Wisker.
* DrivesLikeCrazy
* GuestStarPartyMember: Helps the J-Team out when they're in Mexico City, then disappears from the story.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: After getting out of the Vault of Endless Night.
* SwordAndGun: Wields both a dagger and gun during the fight in the Vault of Endless Night.

!!Nameless

A magical winged serpent that guards a great evil below Mexico City.

----

* AncientKeeper: Has guarded the Vault of Endless Night since at least the time of the Aztecs.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: His ''fangs'' are each the size of Left and Right.
* BackForTheFinale: Reappears in the epilogue, as El Toro returns his Teachings tablet to him.
* ByTheLightsOfTheirEyes: His eyes are always aglow.
* GoodHurtsEvil: His sunfire breath, which seals evil.
* KillItWithFire: Has a beam of light called sunfire he can shoot from his mouth that seals evil.
* LightIsGood: In fact, his full title is Nameless Son of the Sun.
* MacGuffinGuardian: Was tasked with protecting the second tablet of the Teachings of Eternal Shadow, on top of his other duties.
* NighInvulnerable: Shrugs off everything the Shadow Hand throw at him. It takes Jade and Blankman combining their attacks to even slow him down long enough for them to escape.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: When he realizes that the J-Team aren't evil, he works with them to try and stop the Shadow Hand from stealing the tablet.
* ReptilesAreAbhorrent: Subverted, he's a good guy, despite being a giant winged serpent.
* SealedEvilInACan: Guards over a ''massive'' can.

!!Shen Chan

Jade's father.

----

* DirtyCoward: He's too scared to do anything to help the good guys, and leaves the city after he learns the truth about Jade despite all of the good guys trying to convince him otherwise. Heck it even appears that along with Jade, even Uncle disowns Shen after seeing how much of a coward he is.
* ParentalNeglect: Mostly because he was convinced he wasn't fit to be a parent, and so left Jade's raising in her mother's hands. He admits he later realized this was a mistake.

!!Mitsuki/Megan

Anton Mortimer's personal assistant.

----

* TheDogBitesBack: When the Crab Khan mask ends up on her, she quickly succumbs to its influence and tries to kill her boss.
* HypercompetentSidekick: It's clear that she's the brains of Mortimer's operation.
* ReadTheFinePrint: She would love nothing more than to quit working for that idiot, but didn't read the fine print in her contract to see that there is a severe penalty for doing so.

!!Courageous Conrad

An Alaskan trade post shopkeeper.

----

* BrickJoke: Disappears after his first chapter, but apparently keeps calling Uncle to demand restitution for Jade robbing him.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Comes across as this.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Is able to go toe-to-toe with Left, one of the best fighters in-verse, and actually gets the upper hand on him.
-->"Never mess with a small business owner!"
* DualWielding: His "genuine anti-evil hunting knives".
* GuestStarPartyMember: Briefly violates his neutrality and helps the J-Team in their fight for the third tablet after the Shadow Hand robs him.
* NoSell: Doesn't seem to feel Uncle's two-finger slap.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Not all the time, but a lot of it.
* TrueNeutral: He states he's such in-universe, giving a whole speech on how he never picks sides on anything, as it's bad for business, and that's why he helps both the Shadow Hand and the J-Team.
** NeutralNoLonger: Until he realizes that Hebi robbed him when he wasn't looking. After that, he outright sides with the heroes.

!!Miss Kimber

A psychic who the J-Team meets on their quest for the masks, and later during the fight with Verde.

----

* AscendedExtra: In canon, she shows up in one episode, and then never again. Here, she returns and plays an important part in tying up one of the story's B plots.
* ChekhovsGunman: Has her one scene during the mask quest, then comes back later to help finish off the Verde storyline.
* FortuneTeller: Makes her living as one, through use of her genuine foresight abilities.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Attempts one to stop Verde and the Shadow Man, but the J-Team manages to stop them without her needing to.]]
* MacGuffinGuardian: Protects the container where the Shadow Man is sealed away.
* ScrewDestiny: While she can see the future, she knows that it's not written in stone, and that decisions people make matter. As such, she always works to create the best possible outcome. [[spoiler: The J-Team's choice to prevent her HeroicSacrifice pushes off her foretold death by several years, and gives her a way to survive by hopping into the doll Verde used to control her.]]
* VoodooZombie: Is turned into one by Verde, who sticks her soul in a doll and enthralling her EmptyShell.
