[[folder:Yakumo Saitou]]
->Voiced by: Creator/DaisukeOno (TV series & drama CD)
----
* AdaptationalJerkass: in the Anime, Yakumo does not waive Haruka's bill, does not tell her she can come by any time she likes, and does not ask her to [[FirstNameBasis call him by his first name]] as he does in the other versions. It gives off a much colder first impression.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: No matter how much he may [[{{Tsundere}} complain]] about her, if Haruka is in trouble he will do the impossible to save her. ''Always, no exceptions''.
* AmateurSleuth: Despite working with the local police department pretty often, he's ultimately just a civilian, and a younger one at that.
* BigBrotherInstinct: to his younger cousin, Nao.
* BrilliantButLazy: Apart from his ability to see ghosts, he's also so smart that he's capable of SherlockScan level deductions. However, he spends most of his time sleeping in a sleeping bag in the club room or swindling random students and teachers out of their money.
* ChildByRape: [[spoiler: His mother got pregnant with him after being raped. That's one of the reasons why he doesn't consider said rapist to be his father]].
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: When he's wearing his contact lens to cover up his left red eye.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His past is dark and troubled from the [[ChildByRape very]] [[AbusiveParents beginning]], although it did get better with time.
* DefrostingIceKing: He starts to defrost thanks to Haruka.
* FreakinessShame: Prior to meeting [[NiceGirl Haruka]], everyone who'd seen his red eye remarked on how disgusting it was or were afraid of it, to the point that Yakumo was ostracized for it. This is the reason why he wears the color contact on that eye alone.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Regardless of his gruff and snarky personality, it's easy to see that he still cares about doing the right thing and protecting what few friends he has.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Gotou. When Haruka first sees them talking to each other, in the novels, she thinks that they look more like ''old friends'' than an university student and a police officer.
* ISeeDeadPeople: The premise of the series is that his MagicalEye can see ghosts, helping him to solve crimes that involve ghosts.
* KnightInSourArmor: He's seen a lot in his time helping the police with crimes, and between constantly seeing unhappy dead people and seeing [[spoiler:everyone he loves come to an unfortunate end]], he's understandably somewhat bitter and [[TroubledButCute brooding]] about the world around him.
* LimitedWardrobe: In all continuities. He wears the same white button down shirt and jeans in almost every single chapter.
* MagicalEye: One of his eyes is a normal brown; the other is [[RedEyesTakeWarning red and]] [[HellishPupils slit-pupiled]] (in the anime), an indicator of his ability to see ghosts.
* MysteriousPast: By virtue of his tendency to keep his troubles to himself.
* {{Nephewism}}: After his mother [[spoiler:attempted to strangle him]], his kind [[GoodShepherd priest uncle]] Issun took him in and did his best to raise Yakumo.
* ParentalAbandonment: His mother disappeared [[spoiler:after attempting to strangle him]] and his father's whereabouts are unknown, [[spoiler:but in the anime, his father turns out to be the antagonist of the series.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Most people are either disgusted or frightened by his red eye. ''[[{{Tsundere}} Except for some weirdo who said it looked pretty]]''.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: with Haruka.
* TheSlacker: Sleeps all day long and is always found with bed hair and a tired expression.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He is a tall, dark-haired man who is both incredibly handsome and [[TallDarkAndSnarky and snarky]].
* TroubledButCute: Regardless of his [[DarkAndTroubledPast past]] and his [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold acerbic personality]], Yakumo is still a handsome young man.
* {{Tsundere}}: Justified; the people he loves and cares about are systematically [[spoiler:murdered or otherwise removed from his life]] by [[spoiler:[[ArchnemesisDad his biological father]]]], so he has a lot of issues with showing attachment or affection to people who aren't his CoolUncle or his younger cousin Nao.

[[folder:Haruka Ozawa]]
->Voiced by: Creator/AyumiFujimura (TV series), Creator/AyaHirano (drama CD)
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: In both manga adaptations and the novels, Haruka has [[CurtainsMatchTheWindow matching brown hair and eyes]]. In the anime adaptation, she has pink hair and [[TechnicolorEyes light purple eyes]]. Her hairstyle also varies between adaptations.
* {{Ahoge}}: Has one in the Anime
* AlwaysIdenticalTwins: {{Averted}}; Yakumo comments on how Haruka and Ayaka have different faces, despite being twins.
* AngstySurvivingTwin: With a bit of SurvivorGuilt and DeathSeeker.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Has shades of this with Yakumo, in that her sincere concern for him is what helps him [[DefrostingIceQueen defrost]].
* BoyishShortHair: She got bullied for this when she was little, so Ayaka often had to defend her.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In the Ritsu/Suzuka mangas and novels.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Haruka is constantly tripping over something, and it can lead to serious trouble.
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: When young she felt inferior to her sister, as Ayaka was better at studying, sports and was a musical prodigy.
* LimitedWardrobe: In the anime. It stands out, ''painfully''. Averted in both manga series.
* NaiveEverygirl: Before meeting Yakumo, she has absolutely no contact with ghosts and crime investigations.
* NiceGirl: Yakumo points out that she gets very nosy and attached to people, and gets tangled up in their problems as a result.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: College Student, in this case. While Haruka does her best to help Yakumo, the police, and any ghosts she stumbles upon, she's still ultimately a normal human girl who cannot see ghosts.
* PluckyGirl: Despite carrying the IdiotBall at times, in a pinch, she'll do what she can to defend herself and keep the people she cares about from getting hurt.
* PsychologistTeacher: When she starts working as an intern in an elementary school.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: with Yakumo.
* StepfordSmiler: The kindhearted CuteClumsyGirl actually suffers from SurvivorGuilt stemming from [[MyGreatestFailure the death of her twin sister, Ayaka]], to the point of being a DeathSeeker.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: in the anime Haruka's mother looks like a middle-aged version of her.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Haruka's kindness and optimism has allowed her to do this across multiple continuities. For example, in the Ritsu manga, she [[spoiler: manages to talk down a woman holding her at knife point]] to the point that the other party allows the police to arrest them.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Haruka and Ayaka were like this as children; Haruka had short hair and would wear more boyish outfits, while Ayaka had longer hair and wore more dresses and skirts.
* TheWatson: She plays this role to Yakumo across all works, though will in some continuities split this job with Gotou and Ishii.
* WideEyedIdealist: Tends to see the good in everything and everyone, even when it's to her detriment.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kazutoshi Gotou]]
->Voiced by: Creator/HirokiTochi (TV series & drama CD)
----
* TheBigGuy
* FireForgedFriends: The only reason why Yakumo and Gotou work together is to use each other's assets (Yakumo's ability to see ghosts and Gotou's information as a police detective). Or at least that's what they both say to anybody who asks.
* FriendOnTheForce
* HappilyMarried: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted.]] He and his wife, Atsuko, have some problems, as she leaves their house [[RunningGag periodically]]. But in Gotou's monologue we learn that in crucial times she is always there to support him and apparently he ''even'' [[LoveAtFirstSight fell in love at first sight with her]].
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Yakumo. When Haruka first sees them talking to each other, in the novels, she thinks that they look more like ''old friends'' than an university student and a police officer.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He says that he can't remember the ''first'' time he saw his wife, but he remembers the clothes she was wearing, her hairstyle, and thinking "I'm definitely going to marry this woman."
* RunningGag: Yakumo asking him if his wife has left him again and people reminding him not to smoke.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Ishii and Gotou.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Yakumo/Haruka, although he often advises Haruka to "dump" Yakumo.
* SmokingIsCool
[[/folder]]

----
* CowardlySidekick
* HeroicBSOD: Goes through one when [[spoiler:Gotou]] is captured in episode 8, but Haruka and Makoto manage to snap him back to his senses.
* HeroWorshipper: Ishii idolizes Gotou. His reason for is was because he thought Gotou was a psychic detective, and Ishii turns out to be a fan of the occult.
* TheKlutz
* LovableCoward
* LoveAtFirstSight: A bit smitten with Haruka. Unfortunately, [[HopelessSuitor Haruka is very much in love with Yakumo]].
* ObliviousToLove: He is clueless as to why Makoto keeps visiting him and trying to keep in contact with him.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Ishii and Gotou.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Makoto Hijikata]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MegumiToyoguchi
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: She falls for Isshi.
* IntrepidReporter
* NeverASelfMadeWoman: She got her job solely thanks to her father's connections. She isn't ''happy'' about that.
* NiceGirl
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Isshin Saitou]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ToshihikoSeki (TV series), Creator/KenNarita (drama CD)
----
* CoolUncle: Isshin mostly lets Yakumo do his own thing, but whenever Yakumo comes back, Isshun is there to support him. He's also very understanding of his nephew's condition, and even wears a red contact so that he can understand some of the suffering his nephew has gone through.
* GoodShepherd: Isshin is a priest, and a very kindly one at that.
* NiceGuy: Isshun is gentle, well mannered, and kind, to the point that when [[spoiler: he's injured in an attempt to break Yakumo]], almost the entire cast is either investigating the situation or doing their best to help where they can.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Yakumo; after [[spoiler: Yakumo's mother tries to strangle him and disappears]], Isshun took Yakumo in, and raised him as his own. It's to the point that Yakumo [[spoiler: refuses to acknowledge his biological father (who raped his mother and sired him)]], since Isshun was [[spoiler:more of a father to him than his biological father ever was]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nao Saitou]]
->Voiced by: Creator/AmiKoshimizu

* MoralityPet: Her older cousin, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Yakumo]], is [[BigBrotherInstinct sweet and gentle]] with her.
* {{Telepathy}}: She communicates with people by thinking her responses at them, and can hear them when they directly think at her.
