A list of characters from the ''VideoGame/PlantsVsZombies'' video game series by Creator/PopCap. The game they debuted in should be mentioned.

This index page will cover '''Protagonists''', characters who are neither plants nor zombies, such as humans and others. See the subpages below for the plants and zombies.

!!Protagonists:

[[folder:Player Character]]
The protagonist, a suburbanite whose house is constantly besieged by zombies. They later join Crazy Dave on a time-traveling adventure.
----
* BigNo: A loud "Nooo!" can be heard from inside the house if the zombies managed to breach your defences.
* CrazySurvivalist: Except they use mutant plants instead of firearms as weapons.
* FeaturelessProtagonist: They don't appear in person, and are supposed to be the player themselves.
* HeroicMime: As mentioned in FeaturelessProtagonist, the player character doesn't even appear in person, let alone have any lines. The only time they "speak" is when the zombies eat them. See BigNo.
* ScreamDiscretionShot: In a game over scenario, the zombies break into the house to eat the player character's brains. However, this is not a horror game, so you only hear the zombies munching while the player character screams a BigNo.

[[folder:Crazetopher "Crazy Dave" David Blazing III]]

[[quoteright:209:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crazy_dave_pvz.png]]

-> ''"Greetings, Neighbor! The name's Crazy Dave. But you can just call me Crazy Dave."''
The deuteragonist. The player's neighbor, an insane but friendly man who helps them by offering advice and selling them some items. He later creates a time machine named Penny.
----
* BerserkButton: He '''''really''''' hates Bungee Zombies. An entire level centered around Bungees is enough to make his blood boil. Considering how Bungees are [[GoddamnedBats/PlantsVsZombies very dangerous zombies that can steal strong plants, bring in stronger zombies, and are near impossible to stop without either an Umbrella Leaf or an insta-kill]], could anyone really blame the poor guy?
* BigGood: He's the main guy who helps you. In ''Garden Warfare'', it shows.
* CharacterCatchphrase: BECAUSE I'M CRAAAAAAAZY!!
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Isn't called Crazy Dave for nothing.
* CharacterTic: Whenever he shouts (usually his [[CharacterCatchphrase catchphrase]]), expect his TinfoilHat to flip off his head.
* CrazySurvivalist: Except he's a nice guy, and uses mutant plants instead of firearms as weapons.
* DistressedDude: Before the FinalBoss begin, [[spoiler:Dave ends up snatched away by a Bungee Zombie before he tells the player about the Zombot's weakness. He turns out to be okay after the battle, however.]]
* DitzyGenius:
** He comes up with very effective (yet bizarre) methods of fighting against the zombies, and is able to build a time machine, but as he quickly explains, he is crazy.
** He's also surprisingly well-informed about palaeobiology, in Jurassic Marsh - he thinks the most iconic organisms of the Jurassic period were the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnosperm gymnosperms]] (''before'' thinking of "dino-sours" - he's a gardener, after all), and makes a reference to theropod evolutionary history while escaping from an incoming meteor.
--->'''Crazy Dave:''' "Bye-bye, dinos! You'll be birdies in no time."
* EvilTwin: In the Chinese version of the second game, he has an evil gangster brother simply named Evil Dave.
* {{Flanderization}}: In the original, he was a little eccentric and a bit crazy, but still fairly intelligent and knowledgeable about the plants and zombies. In ''It's About Time'', while it's still the case, the introduction of [[StraightMan Penny]] makes him [[TookALevelInDumbass much dumber]], often relying on Penny to interpret his ramblings.
* GivenNameReveal: In ''Plants vs. Zombies 2'', Zomboss refers him as David. And according to the comic, his last name is Blazing. His full name eventually revealed to be Crazetopher David Blazing the 3rd in ''Plants vs. Zombies 3''.
* HisNameReallyIsBarkeep: You'd think Crazy Dave is just a nickname he caught from being a bit on the loony side, and that Dave is his first name, but ''Plants vs. Zombies 3'' reveals that it's just a shortening of his first two names, Crazetopher and David.
* LargeHam: His dialogue certainly shows he really chews the scenery.
* LoonWithAHeartOfGold: He's very eccentric, but he's still the BigGood of the series who always helps out the player against the zombies.
* MadScientist: Despite his insanity, and besides his (informal) expertise on the plants and zombies, he was able to turn his car into a time machine.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: If Zomboss' words were sincere (and that's a huge ''if''), [[spoiler: Dave's quest to re-eat his taco in the second game caused huge problems in the timeline]]. However, he claims to be "too taco-addled to care".
* SkewedPriorities: In the final battle of Modern Day, Dave is fixated on his taco and nothing but, to the point he mostly exclaims "TACO!!"
* SpeakingSimlish: Crazy Dave is apparently speaking English (via his text bubbles), though his voice sounds like random gibberish. With that said, the comics and the third game suggests that he's TheUnintelligible, with only few people like his niece, Patrice could understand him.
* TinfoilHat: He wears a saucepan as a helmet, probably to shield his brains from zombies.
* TokenHuman: Pretty much him and probably the Player are the only (living) human characters in the games, though some games, such as ''Adventures'', and the comics introduce more human characters.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He seems to have an obsession for tacos, to the point of willing to pay you the absurd price of ''$1,000'' for it in the first game and time-travel through ''millennia'' just to re-eat it in the second game.[[note]]Initially, his favorite food was bacon before it eventually changed to taco in the later version of the first game[[/note]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Penny]]
The tritagonist of ''Plants vs. Zombies 2''. Penny is Crazy Dave's car (a pickup truck/recreational vehicle), that was converted into a robotic time machine. She takes Dave and the protagonist through the past and future.
----
* ComputerVoice: Penny is apparently speaking English (via her text bubbles), though her voice sounds like electronic beeping.
* CoolCar: She's a highly intelligent talking car that can bypass the boundaries of time and space. Hardly can get cooler than that.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has several moments of this towards [[DitzyGenius Crazy Dave]], such as:
-->'''Crazy Dave''': Is this Last Stand?\\
'''Penny''': No, this is First Sit. It was sarcasm.
* DemotedToExtra: She appears in ''Garden Warfare 2'' and ''Battle for Neighborville'', but doesn't talk.
* TheSmartGirl: She does most of the exposition in the second game.
* [[StraightMan Straight Woman]]: Despite being created by him, she is usually the one who talks common sense into Dave, and tries to calm him down whenever he's acting up.
* TimeMachine: Penny brings both Dave and the PC through different timelines, such as: AncientEgypt, the WildWest, the [[TheFuture Far Future]], the [[DarkAgeEurope Dark Ages]], etc.

[[folder:Stinky the Snail]]
A snail that can be purchased in the first game after the Zen Garden is unlocked. He helps the player collect coins produced by plants in the Zen Garden.
----
* SweetTooth: Will move faster and stay awake for longer when given chocolate.
* {{Transplant}}: Originally appeared in ''VideoGame/{{Insaniquarium}}'', another [[Creator/PopCapGames PopCap]] game.
