[[caption-width-right:350:The Eleven Supernovas [[AndZoidberg (and Blackbeard)]].]]

Together with Luffy and Zoro, eleven rookie pirates with [[PowerLevels bounties]] over 100 million berries, all of whom arrived at the Sabaody Archipelago at around the same time. Each had taken differing routes along the first half of the Grand Line, [[HeroOfAnotherStory implicitly facing dangers and hardships equal to that of the Straw Hat crew]]. Their post-TimeSkip designs have all been revealed far in advance of their next actual appearances in the story. [[http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130206035735/onepiece/images/e/e2/Supernova_Timeskip.png See for yourself if you don't mind this particular spoiler.]] Post-TimeSkip, they are collectively known as the "[[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Worst Generation]]", together with the Straw Hats and [[BigBad Blackbeard Pirates]].

[[folder:In General]]
!!Tropes associated with the Supernovas as a whole:

* TheAlliance: There's one between Luffy and Law, another between Kid, Apoo and Hawkins, and a third between Luffy and Bege. The first aims to overthrow Kaido, while the second are first shown planning to take on Big Mom before their next appearance discussing about taking down Shanks (before Kaido fell to the ground right around them), [[spoiler:And then Apoo apparently joins Kaido's side while Kid is held prisoner by Kaido, and the third only teamed up to take down Big Mom at her tea party, after that their alliance will practically be null and void]].
* AmbitionIsEvil: In-universe, the evident logic behind them being referred to as "The Worst Generation", what with them being the only generation of pirates in recent times to actively threaten the Status Quo by taking on the Four Emperors. Especially so since Blackbeard tends to be lumped in with them.
* TheDreaded: All of them plus Blackbeard are known as "The Worst Generation" post-timeskip.
** As a generation of pirates born between two eras, the main reason why they are so feared is not only for their massive amount of potential, but also for their tendency to somehow be in the center of any major event that may disrupt the balance of the world. This started with Luffy and his involvement in the Paramount War.
* ExplainingYourPowersToTheEnemy: Explicitly averted; to keep the story at a brisk pace, Oda decided not to explain ''any'' of their Devil Fruit powers (as well as quite a few others) during the Whitebeard War Saga.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Most of them are shown in short amounts to be having their own adventures and stories in the background. Except for Law, who gets some focus in Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs.
* PragmaticVillainy: Although the various Supernova are known for their infamous reputations as well as catastrophic deeds, there are still limits and rules that they adhere to. For instance, most of them know better than to attack a Celestial Dragon as they know it would incite the retaliation of an Admiral.
* TheRival: To Luffy. Even if he has only acknowledged Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid as this for now.
* ShoutOutThemeNaming: With the exception of Killer, all of them are [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast named after famous pirates]] from RealLife.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Downplayed. They're powerful for sure but the Supernovas that choose to challenge the Four Emperors often overestimate their own power severely. Kid, Luffy, and [[spoiler:Bege]] talk a big game about how they will bring down an Emperor but a confrontation with them has never ended well: Kid was beaten senseless by Kaido, while [[spoiler:Bege]] and Luffy barely managed to escape the Big Mom Pirates [[spoiler:after their assassination attempt on Big Mom failed]]. It's been gradually subverted, however, as the Supernovas grow in strength. Luffy in particular was acknowledged as a potential future threat to Big Mom by no less than her strongest subordinate and Sweet Commander, Charlotte Katakuri, [[spoiler:who made it his personal mission during the climax of the Whole Cake Island arc to end Luffy's life before the "potential" part no longer applied. Considering Luffy ''defeated'' Katakuri (albeit, barely), he wasn't wrong about how dangerous Luffy really was]].
* WildCard: Every single one of them, and it's the main reason why they're so feared. Their willingness to challenge the status quo of the world, along with all the chaos they caused when they first entered the New World, is what caused them to gain the moniker "The Worst Generation." Some of them go to challenge the Four Emperors, while some others choose to serve under them.
* TheWorfEffect: Barring the Warlords, the Supernovas are established as arguably the most dangerous pirates in the first half of the Grand Line, with each of them having bounties exceeding 100 million. However, the threats of the New World are often shown to be much more dangerous. [[spoiler: Notably, Kidd gets taken out by Kaido, while it takes some of Luffy's strongest attacks as well as Nami's help to defeat one of Big Mom's three strongest subordinates, and even then, the fight lasted over ''eleven hours'']]. One of Big Mom's subordinates even notes this, stating that pirates who actually end up facing the Emperors and their forces run into an insurmountable wall.

[[folder:Eustass "Captain" Kid]]

-->"''You know on the path we've been traveling up until now... Saying a thing like ['I'm the one who will claim One Piece'] would just get you laughed at. Although... I slaughtered anyone and everyone who had the nerve to laugh at me...!! But from here on out... we're gonna be sailing the sea where anyone without the nerve to say something like that is as good as dead...!!''"

->Voiced by: Creator/DaisukeNamikawa (JP), Creator/JustinCook (EN)

Eustass Kid is the captain of the Kid Pirates and one of the eleven pirates dubbed with the moniker "Supernova". He's the only one who had a bounty higher than Luffy's. He's known for his violent personality, though he's also knowledgeable in the ways of how the world works and when to step back. Like Luffy, he aims to become Pirate King, and is infamous for leaving behind a trail of bodies of those who mocked him for it. He says that he possesses the determination to achieve the impossible, which is necessary if one is to succeed in the New World.

After the time skip, he was first shown watching the black market, with a new metallic arm. Some time later, he strikes an alliance with Apoo and Hawkins to strike down Shanks.

His first known bounty was 315,000,000 berries. His current bounty is 470,000,000 berries.

* ArtificialLimbs: After the TimeSkip, Kid has gained a new metal left arm.
* AtLeastIAdmitIt: The reason he hates the World Nobles: he's ''far'' from a nice guy and will admit it, but they're horrid people and act like gods.
--> '''Kid''': World Nobles... Slaves... Human shops... Against the "purity" of these "upper classes", the villains of the world look positively humane in comparison. It's because the world's in the hands of scum like them that it's all screwed to hell... I mean, we're not the nicest of guys, but at least we're honest about it.
* AxCrazy: Luffy got his high bounty by being a huge thorn in the World Government's side. Kid got his by killing anyone and everyone who mocked his dream of being Pirate King. Once he gets to the New World... damn...
* BaitTheDog: Wasn't really shown to be evil, snarking at Luffy and Law during their EnemyMine at Sabaody and showing general disgust at the decadent World Nobles. His cruelty and penchant for wanton murder were mentioned before, but when he's actually showing crucifying pirates fleeing the New World, it's a little jarring.
* BerserkButton: While Luffy has shrugged off those who mocked his dream, Kid went right ahead and killed them.
* BlackMarket: [[spoiler:Post-timeskip, it's suggested he's involved there, just to get a look at the things he might go up against.]]
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: He sunk [[spoiler:two of ''Big Mom's ships''.]] Not attacked, not damaged, '''sunk'''.
* EnemyMine: Aside from him, Luffy, and Law taking down marines at Sabaody (which was really just them showing off), after the TimeSkip, [[spoiler:he's willing to discuss an alliance with rivals Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins in order to take down an Emperor, said Emperor being ''Red-Haired Shanks''!]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Kid remarks on this himself during the Sabaody auction -- he may be a bloodthirsty pirate, but he sure as hell doesn't run a slavery ring. It should be noted he was there to potentially ''buy'' one, but chances are that he, like Law, was simply recruiting and wouldn't have kept the explosive collar on.
* EvilCounterpart: To Luffy. Both have bounties of over 300 million; both of their [[TheDragon dragons]] are non-DF sword users who are also among the supernovas (Killer for Kid, Zoro for Luffy); both are hot-headed; both serve as Red Onis to Law's Blue Oni; both dream to be Pirate King; both joined other Supernovas in an alliance to take down a Emperor, and in fact have managed to run into conflict with three of them (Kidd with Big Mom, Kaidou, and Shanks, Luffy with Big Mom, Kaidou and Blackbeard); both have facial scars (Luffy's is under his eye, Kid's are over his eye and across his face and neck) and both hate the World Nobles (though unlike Luffy, Kid doesn't act on it). However, while Luffy is friendly and kind, Kid is AxCrazy.
* EvilRedHead: Appears to be averted early on, as he isn't shown to be anything more than evil. Played straight later on [[spoiler:when he's shown ''crucifying'' pirates fleeing the New World.]]
* EvilVersusEvil: He's personally waging war against Big Mom [[spoiler:and even sunk two of her ships]].
* FieryRedhead: To an extreme degree.
* GangOfHats: He and his crew all have Heavy Metal-esque clothes.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Gains some pretty nasty ones on his face and arm after the TimeSkip.
* HairTriggerTemper: ''Infamous'' for this, and it's to the point where it crosses over from "unstable" to "dangerously psychopathic".
** Averted in one notable case: Luffy telling him to his face that he - not Kid - will become Pirate King. Instead of getting angry, Kid approves Luffy's attitude.
* {{Jerkass}}: This is honestly the nicest thing that can be said about him.
* MagnetismManipulation: His Devil Fruit ability.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: [[spoiler: Suffered an off-screen one courtesy of Kaido.]]
* OffstageVillainy: Until he was shown crucifying a pirate crew in the New World for trying to escape to "Paradise", you would never have realized how true the mentioned detail that he racked up an impressive body count of civilians was. The civilian thing was MoralEventHorizon material, albeit material that would not quite yet faze the audience, because he didn't seem very evil up to that point. With the pirate crew's execution, it was hammered in.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** With Trafalgar Law. Their personalities pretty much complement the scheme with Kid being extremely violent and easily provoked while Law seems much more relaxed and calm. Their coloring (Kid being a red head and Law having dark blue hair in the manga) and their clothing motifs (Kid with his [[SpikesofVillainy Metallica-esque get-up]] and Law with his furry (no, not [[UsefulNotes/FurryFandom that]] kind of furry!) style) also seem to reflect their opposing personalities.
** With his subordinate, Killer. Killer is much more level-headed and reasonable than his captain, and had to calm Kid down when he was about to get into a fight with Scratchmen Apoo.
* SlasherSmile: Sports one quite often.
* SpikesOfVillainy: His pre-timeskip outfit has spiky shoulders on his coat. He doesn't have them anymore after the timeskip, but he keeps his spiky-ish hair.
* TheSociopath: Initially seemed like a TokenEvilTeammate because he happened to be on the protagonists side and had some standards, but his actions in the New World put him firmly in this category.
* SocialDarwinist: With respect to the New World at least, he believes that no one without resolve or courage should even be there in the first place. Thus, he begins his time in the New World by crucifying a pirate crew for their cowardice in trying to escape to "Paradise" (a.k.a. the first half of the Grand Line).
-->"Live or die!!! Bastards without even that much resolve shouldn't have ever come to this ocean."
* StrangeBedfellows: His brief alliance with Luffy and Trafalgar Law outside the Human Shop against the Marines and then with Trafalgar Law against the Pacifista.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: Thought he and his alliance would be enough to take down [[spoiler:Shanks.]] He gets rude awakening when [[spoiler:Kaido literally drops out of the sky in front of him. Next time we see him, he's beaten half to death and captured, while last confirmed time Shanks tangled with Kaido, he walked away just fine, showing just how massive of a gap between him and an Emperor there really is.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Again with Luffy, and perhaps Trafalgar Law as well. He all but states this when he admits that he beat up anyone who laughed at his dreams and that the only ones who make it in the New World will be those that aim high for their dreams and consequently invites both Luffy and Law to meet up with him in the New World.
** Further proven when, during the Punk Hazard arc, [[spoiler:he showed obvious delight at the fact that Luffy had finally showed up at the New World, and Law wasn't a 'government dog'.]]
* TheWorfEffect: It's been shown that Kaido did a number on him off-screen, to make it clear that Kaido means business.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: In comparison to Law, Kid seems older than him by a few years. In reality, he's twenty-three, three years younger than the twenty-six year old Law.

[[folder:"Magician" Basil Hawkins]]
-->"''Concerning the fate of your clothes, it's going to be a cruel and unlucky day.''"

->Voiced by: Shigenori Soya (JP), Creator/TaliesinJaffe (under T. Axelrod) (EN)

Coming from the North Blue, Basil Hawkins is the captain of the Hawkins Pirates. He tends to act in a stoic manner even when confronted with danger. This is perhaps because as Hawkins is a fortune teller, he has little to worry about concerning his fate. After the Time Skip, he strikes an alliance with Apoo and Kid.

His devil fruit is a strange one. Hawkins can make voodoo dolls that will absorb any blow he takes and deflect the damage to the person the doll was based off of, in addition it allows him to turn into a scarecrow-like monster with nails for claws, though his true power has yet to be shown. He also has very accurate foresight, though it's unknown if this is an inherent power, the result of greatly honing Observation Haki skills, or another effect of his fruit.

His first known bounty was 249,000,000 berries. His current bounty is 320,000,000 berries.

* ClippedWingAngel: He can turn into a large scarecrow, though this also makes him a bigger target, and he's still just as vulnerable to harm. The basics of his Devil Fruit still apply, as well. Kizaru trounced him when he used it. Granted, Kizaru would have won one way or another, but Basil didn't do himself any favors.
* CoolSword: With a voodoo doll handle.
* TheFatalist: Has the ability to predict the future, so a lot of his lines, actions and decisions stem from what he ''knows'' will happen. For example, Hawkins fought Kizaru, but knew that he'd survive, and attacked [[spoiler:Brownbeard]] all by his lonesome, because he saw the shadow of death on him.
* FortuneTeller: He can do this to predict what happens to people. He might either just look at the person, or use some tarot cards for it.
%%* FriendlyEnemy: To Urouge.
* GangOfHats: He and his crew have a mystic theme.
* HiddenDepths: He may be a mysterious, voodoo-using pirate, but [[WordOfGod Oda]] says he actually has an interest in interior design.
* HollywoodVoodoo: Of course, it helps that Basil has actual magic powers, probably a Devil Fruit. Any physical damage he takes is redirected to someone else, represented by voodoo dolls that shed from his skin. The fact that the dolls are made of straw, may liken his powers to Ushi no Koku Mairi, a type of Japanese Curse magic involving dolls.
* NighInvulnerable: Since he had the power to redirect physical damage to other targets via voodoo dolls. While the actual mechanics aren't quite clear, Kizaru was able to deduce that it at least wasn't a Logia even though, by his own admission, he had no clue what it actually ''was''.
* OneWingedAngel: Becomes a bizarre scarecrow with nail claws.
* PetTheDog: His part of the Supernova introduction scene has him prevent a member of his crew from attacking a waiter who spilled on the crewman. This is a sharp contrast from the two Supernova's introduced ahead of him, Bonney berating the staff to bring her food faster and Capone Bege [[EyeScream assaulting]] [[IDontPayYouToThink a member of his own crew]].
* ScaryScarecrows: His power allows him to become a giant scarecrow.
* TheStoic: Probably justified when you take his Devil Fruit into consideration.
* UnusualEyebrows: Three vertical lines above each eye in place of eyebrows.

[[folder:"Red Flag" X. Drake]]
-->"''Good. That'll make things quicker!''"

->Voiced by: Creator/EijiTakemoto (JP), Creator/DCDouglas (EN)

Coming from the North Blue, X. (pronounced "diez") Drake is the captain of the Drake Pirates. A former Marine Rear Admiral turned pirate, he is aware of many of the Marines' strategies, and projects such as the Pacifista. He is an "Ancient Zoan" Devil Fruit user, with the power to transform into a Giganotosaurus (similar to a Tyrannosaurus, but with three-fingered claws).

He has a bounty of 220,000,000 berries.
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:His father went from being a Marine officer to an exceptionally brutal and cruel pirate who was apparently no less terrible to Drake than he was to his victims.]] The fact that Drake bore absolutely no grudge against [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] for being responsible for his father's death is very telling.
* {{Animorphism}}: In his case, his fruit is an Ancient Zoan that turns him [[EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs into a dinosaur]].
* ChildSoldier: [[spoiler:He fought for his father's crew when he was still a teen, and was apparently [[PintSizedPowerhouse the crew's heavy hitter]] even then.]]
* CoolMask: Wear a domino mask. After the timeskip, he wears a slanted headband along with it, with the headband going over one eye with a hole like the mask.
* CurbStompBattle: He easily beats up Caribou in the latter's cover arc [[spoiler:after he just defeated and absorbed Scotch, Kaido's henchman]].
* DarkAndTroubledPast: What little the volume 78 SBS revealed of his past isn't pretty: [[spoiler:Drake used to admire his father Barrels, who was a Marine officer at the time. However, Barrels ended up defecting from the Marines and becoming a very cruel pirate, violent to even his own son. Drake still followed him out of sheer fear, until he was taken in by the Marines. However, after rising in the ranks himself, he ended up defecting and becoming a pirate, like his father before him.]]
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler:Attacks one of Kaido's islands, ''because he knew'' Kaidou would retaliate.]] Guy's got guts. [[spoiler:Apparently, he impressed Kaido so much that now, he ''works'' for him.]]
* DualWielding: Both a [[{{BFS}} large rapier]] and a [[AnAxeToGrind quaduple headed axe]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Jumping in to stop a battle between Killer and Urouge with a sword in one hand and an axe.
* GangOfHats: Both he and his crew have a Musketeer theme.
* GenerationXerox: [[spoiler:Drake's father was also a Marine who defected to become a pirate. Drake himself was later taken in by the Marines after Doflamingo killed his father... and then defected later to become a pirate]].
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has an X-shaped one on his chin.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: The "X" is pronounced ''diez'', as in "10" in Spanish.
* HazyFeelTurn: Was a Rear Admiral before becoming a pirate. Admiral Kizaru seems to think that Drake switched sides purely because [[ItAmusedMe he was bored with being a Marine and thought it would be more fun to become a pirate]], though an SBS implies that there's much more to it than that.
* HellBentForLeather: His coat, pants, boots, and gloves are all leather and he is very much a badass.
* HiddenDepths: According to an SBS, Drake has an interest in both reptiles and astrophysics.
* KiAttacks: He can use Armament Haki at least, having beaten Caribou into a pulp with it.
* MagicPants: In Zoan form he keeps his jacket and hat, which simply change size along with the rest of him. His pants, boots, and gloves mysteriously vanish, only to reappear when he turns human again.
* NiceHat: In his first appearance, he wears a bicorne hat. He ditches it over the timeskip.
* NonMammalianHair: In his fully Zoan form, although it's justified due to how Zoan fruits work. It's more apparent in Drake's post-timeskip design, where you can actually see his hair on his Giganotosaurus form due to him not wearing a hat anymore.
* OlderThanTheyLook:
** As a teenager. At nineteen he looked like he could be a preteen, and in-universe his description was close enough to the then-thirteen [[spoiler: Trafalgar Law for Doflamingo to think the Marines had Law in custody instead of Drake.]]
** Possibly in the main story, given he's already in his thirties by the time he hits Sabaody.
* TheStoic: Much more patient and observant than some other Supernovas, but not to the level as Hawkins.
* SuperMode: Most of his fights with Urouge, Killer, and the single Pacifista were done while in his unsuperpowered human form. But when the stakes go up, he breaks out the big guns and turns into a TyrannosaurusRex.
* TyrannosaurusRex: Not quite. He wields a Zoan fruit that can turn him into a Giganotosaurus, a similar dinosaur, but with three claws instead of two.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: As seen in an SBS where Oda drew the Supernovas as kids; serious, perpetually frowning Drake used to be a {{Moe}} CheerfulChild [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/d/d8/X_Drake_as_a_Child.png/revision/latest?cb=20130222223408 with a grin a mile wide]]. [[spoiler:Then his father defected from the Marines and became a cruel pirate, Drake was constantly abused and only followed his parent he once admired out of fear, and when Doflamingo's crew came a-knocking, Drake instantly jumped ship and left his father to die. His horrible experiences left him with a near-permanent frown now]].
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Comes with being a Zoan devil-fruit user. So far he's only showcased a full transformation in canon, no hybrid form in-between yet. Video games indicate his Zoan is similar to Marco's and instead he turns bits of himself into a dinosaur instead of having a true hybrid form, but that is all non-canon for now.
* WildCard: Aside from his status as a Marine defector, his aims remain completely mysterious.
* XMakesAnythingCool: It's pretty much his motif. The X-shaped scar on his chin, the "X" tattoo on his torso and the fact that his family name "Diez" is represented by a "X". [[spoiler: The last of these may be his way of distancing himself from his father, Diez Barrels.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Averted. Doflamingo is responsible for the death of Barrels, but Drake carries no grudge because his father was [[AssholeVictim a complete scumbag]].]]

[[folder:"Surgeon of Death" Trafalgar Law]]

->Voiced by: Creator/HiroshiKamiya (JP), Creator/MatthewMercer (EN)

-->"''As long as you're within Law's circle, consider yourself a patient on the operating table.''" -- Smoker concerning Trafalgar Law's Devil Fruit ability.

--> "''Weaklings can't pick their way of death.''"

Trafalgar Law is the captain of the Heart Pirates and one of the eleven pirates dubbed with the moniker "Supernova". He's a very laid-back person, and while his speech is very polite, he has no problem with taking mocking jabs at people or giving them the middle finger. Law ate the Op-Op Fruit (''Ope Ope no Mi''), which allows him to create an area wherein he can cut up anything without damage, be it people or objects, and rearrange it with a flick of his fingers. He gladly accepts new people to join his crew, and is also careful to deny any undeserved credit, though he does not like being ordered around at all. Over the TimeSkip, he's become a Warlord, a feat he seems to have achieved by handing over 100 pirates' hearts to the Government. He also used to be the subordinate of "Joker", AKA Donquixote Doflamingo.

His first known bounty was 200,000,000 berries. During the TimeSkip, it rose to 440,000,000 million berries before being frozen as a Warlord. After the events of Dressrosa, his bounty was reinstated and rose to 500,000,000 berries, tied with Luffy for the highest bounty among the Supernovas.
* AdaptationDyeJob: He has yellow eyes and dark blue hair in the manga, but black hair and GrayEyes in the anime. His BadassLongcoat in the Dressrosa arc is also changed from black in the manga to brown in the anime.
* AffablyEvil: While he's every bit as laid-back as he presents himself, ''do not'' discount his cruelty. [[spoiler: The affable part had to be learned, however. He was originally just plain evil as a child (after his tragedy at Flevance).]]
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Certainly more morally grey than any of the Straw Hats, and guilty of a lot of OffstageVillainy; however, since he's a [[WildCard rather mysterious and unpredictable character]], it's unclear exactly how much of his nasty reputation is actually deserved, seeing how the Straw Hats appear much worse than they really are to the eyes of the world. [[spoiler:The Dressrosa arc clears up some of the mystery surrounding him; though he is certainly cold, distant and cruel, he doesn't appear to be truly evil, since he obviously has standards, seems to care about his crew, and goes out of his way to help his Straw Hat allies on multiple occasions]].
* AndShowItToYou: His "Mes" technique. Non-lethal variety. If he so chooses.
* AnimalMotifs: Like Blackbeard, Law was given one outside of the manga and anime, a snow leopard. Given his cool disposition, knack for coming up with calculated plans, and spot-patterned attire, this can be seen as a rather accurate comparison.
* ArchEnemy: Law ''hates'' [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] and is fully prepared to die in order to get his revenge on him for an event that occurred thirteen years ago [[spoiler:(the death of Corazon, Doflamingo's younger brother and the most dearest person in Law's heart)]]. And after everything's that's happened in the Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs, we can say that the feeling is ''very'' mutual on [[spoiler:Doflamingo]]'s end. At one point, [[spoiler:after Law manages to liquefy Doflamingo's organs]], Law tells Luffy to keep out of his last confrontation with Doflamingo, as he sees the man as his responsibility, and his ''alone''. It's telling that Luffy obeyed without question and only intervened after Law could no longer fight anymore; it seems even he could sense how personal this was for Law.
* ArcSymbol: The HeartSymbol appears a lot on things pertaining to him. Such as the heart tattoo on his shoulders and back (which apparently [[spoiler:the citizens of Flevance also had]]), him being appointed as the Heart Seat of Doflamingo's "card suit" top officers and being a former subordinate to a deceased Heart Seat member, the Op-Op Fruit being heart-shaped, and when he used his powers to switch 2 people's "souls", they're represented by a heart shape. Oh, and he can tear out actual hearts as well.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Doflamingo cuts Law's right arm off with strings. Only temporary, as it is reattached and healed later by Leo and Mansherry.]]
* AscendedExtra: He ranked in the top 10 in ''One Piece's'' official popularity poll [[EnsembleDarkhorse after his first appearance.]] It's no coincidence that he's gotten more screen time since.
** He was ranked the 2nd most popular character in the series after Luffy from a poll taken in late 2014, beating Zoro who was consistently 2nd before. Law was already a major character by that point, but him beating so many established veterans is very impressive.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking:
** [[spoiler: When he was a Warlord, he beat '''Smoker''' in a one-on-one fight, a feat that not even Luffy has managed (though admittedly one he probably ''could'' now).]]
** On a more general note, he's the captain of the Heart Pirates and seems to exercise his authority in the role more than Luffy does; he is also almost certainly the strongest member.
** The Dressrosa Arc reveals [[spoiler: he was taken in as a child by Doflamingo to become his future right-hand man and the third holder of the title of ''Corazon'']]. As a result, Law received rigorous training and an extensive education [[spoiler: in order to prepare him for his future role as the NumberTwo of the Donquixote Family. Following his defection, he uses the skills he was taught against his former crew and kills the first 'Corazon' Vergo during the events at Punk Hazard, lands a devastating blow to Trebol that leads to his defeat, and even manages to deal near-fatal damage to [[BigBad Doflamingo]], all while gravely incapacitated.]]
* AwesomeMcCoolname: When you're named after a historical battle, this is inevitable. [[spoiler:His full name gives him another historical battle.]]
* BadassBeard: He has one.
* BadassInDistress: In the Dressrosa arc, he was [[spoiler: shot, captured, rendered unconscious, and chained up by Doflamingo.]]
* BadassLongcoat: During the Punk Hazard arc. He wears a different one in Dressrosa.
* BeatStillMyHeart: Using his power, he can literally remove your still beating heart, and you'll live through it, because his power makes it a non-fatal wound. [[spoiler:He did this to Smoker in order to beat him. It's implied this is also what happened to the 100 pirates Law used as a way to enter the warlord position.]]
* BenevolentBoss: His crew genuinely seems to like him, and were very happy when Luffy was able to tell them he was okay. Law also made sure to keep them out of the way for the Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs. An SBS later reveals that he's known at least the core members (Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin) since they were teenagers (or a kid in Bepo's case), so it's likely their relationship is deeper than just boss and subordinate.
* BerserkButton: Go ahead, insult [[spoiler: Donquixote "Corazon" Rocinante]] in front of Law. [[SchmuckBait We]] [[TooDumbToLive dare]] [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge you.]] When [[spoiler: Doflamingo]] insulted [[spoiler: Corazon]] right in front of Law, Law's response was to-- [[spoiler: despite being on death's door-- drag himself over to Doflamingo and electrocute his liquefied insides.]]
* BestServedCold: His plan of revenge against Doflamingo is one of big proportions, which includes him becoming a Warlord, allying with Luffy and even a gambit that involves making Kaido angry at Doffy, and apparently has been done for about 13 years.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite being a near PerpetualSmiler and having a really laid-back personality, he has a really nasty reputation amongst his fellow Supernovas. How bad, you might ask? [[spoiler: To join the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he extracted and delivered 100 pirate hearts to the World Government.]]
* {{BFS}}: Carries a sword almost as tall as he is. Its name is Kikoku (鬼哭, lit. Demon Wail), and its size is justified since it's a nodachi.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Pops up in the middle of a three-way (technically four-way) war between the Blackbeard pirates, Whitebeard pirates and Luffy's motley gang of Impel Down escapees, and the Marines and Seven Warlords of the Sea to rescue Luffy.]] That takes balls.
** Later, he shows up in the middle of [[spoiler:Luffy and Franky's fight with the Yeti Cool Brothers to take down the remaining brother before he could leave with Nami again]].
** He apparently did this in the past to help out Bepo, beating up two delinquents who were bullying him. Bepo and the delinquents in question - [[DefeatMeansFriendship Shachi and Penguin]] - were so impressed by Law that they decided to join him on his travels and, eventually, they formed the Heart Pirates together.
* BilingualBonus: More of a bilingual hand gesture, but in Spanish, the middle finger is called "(el dedo del) corazón". So yes, there really is a hidden meaning behind it.
* BreakoutCharacter: Law shot up high in the Character Polls [[note]]Higher than even some of the Straw Hat characters even.[[/note]] before he really ever did anything. Not coincidentally, he's gone on to become a major supporting character in the series; pulling a BigDamnHero during the Summit War Saga to save Luffy when the rest of his crew was PutOnABus, and even getting upgraded to {{Deuteragonist}} during the Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs.
* BrokenPedestal: As a child, he admired and wanted to become like Doflamingo. Until his bond grew with Corazon and he overheard Doflamingo claim Law's only importance was that he die for him.
* BuriedInAPileOfCorpses: What he resorted to in order to escape his hometown when it was attacked.
* ButtMonkey: Ever since he allied himself with Luffy, Law has become a frequent victim of TheWorfEffect, forcibly dragged into the Straw Hats' hijinks, and more-or-less subjected to Luffy's numerous whims. Law's life in general ever since the Pirate Alliance saga started has been one long-running joke.
* ByronicHero: Law is attractive being a character in One Piece with more distinguished facial features like Shanks and Robin. He boasts enough charisma to gather a crew with 20 members. He is intelligent and cunning, having devised a plan over 13 years to bring down Doflamingo's empire and hamper an Emperor's plan to increase his power. He has experienced two great losses in his life, first his family and country establishment then the hero to whom he owes his life towards. Everything having added up to avenge his fallen hero with enough determination that meant giving his life for.
* CelibateHero: Law is one of the few people in the world to have virtually no reaction to Boa Hancock's beauty, and unlike his crew, he also doesn't comment on the abundance of attractive women in [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]]. In general, he seems more annoyed by matters of romance than anything; when Monet tries to playfully flirt with him, he just coldly ignores her, prompting her to comment on how "unsociable" he is.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Was introduced as a laid-back but powerful pirate who really only showed his mean side when angered and was a PerpetualSmiler the rest of the time. After the timeskip, he was portrayed as much more serious and smiled much less often, in addition to his ability for cruelty being a little more apparent. To be fair, he's currently engaged with the difficult task of defeating Doflamingo and has to deal with the Straw Hats' wacky hijinks.
* ChekhovsGun: He got his right arm severed by Doflamingo. [[spoiler:Later, he uses that severed arm (with it holding his sword) for a surprise attack on Trebol.]]
* TheChessmaster: Comes off as this more-and-more in recent appearances, particularly in the Punk Hazard arc, where he proposed an alliance with Luffy in order to take down an Emperor, starting with blackmailing Doflamingo.
* CombatMedic: "Surgeon of Death" is more than a RedBaron, though thankfully for Luffy it doesn't actually refer to his medical skills.
* TheComicallySerious: When face-to-face with the Straw Hats' antics, he doesn't seem to know how to react, leaving him with either a deadpan or annoyed expression when they're doing things like [[spoiler:tying an incapacitated Chopper to his head]].
* CoolBoat: His Heart Pirate's vessel, The Polar Tang, is not only a ShoutOut to Beatle's ''Yellow Submarine'' (which conveniently is Law's colour theme), it is also based from the real life ''TRAFALGAR''-class submarine of Royal Navy, which is the only of its class that can traverse through thick ice and operates on nuclear power. Also equipped with 7 jetbeam propulsion, perhaps explaining how it could escape through the frozen water of Aokiji's ''Ice Age'' and avoid Kizaru's light beam simultaneously, two Logia-type Admirals who are hot on their pursuit during rescuing Luffy in Marineford.
* CrazyPrepared: Hid regular iron chains to swap with Seastone chains around a laboratory in case he is betrayed and captured by some mistake. Which comes to pass.
** He spends 13 years plotting his revenge against [[spoiler:Doflamingo]]. Once his scheme is put into motion [[spoiler:in Punk Hazard, the entirety of Doflamingo's empire - his SAD production, artifical Devil Fruit manufaturing, arm dealings, business partnership with Kaidou -]] starts crumbling down within the span of days.
** As it turns out there is a purpose for Law saving Luffy in Marineford and then allying with him later. [[spoiler:He firmly believes in the D lineage and what it can do, so allying with a fellow D will therefore increases his chance on taking down Doflamingo and anything that stands in the way of his goal. The fact that Doffy is revealed to be a former World Noble who naturally thinks of the Ds like boogeymen]] is just icing on the cake that Law goes to exploit.
* CreepyChild: As shown in [[http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130708025331/onepiece/images/d/d4/Trafalgar_Law_as_a_Child.png an SBS]], Law used to be one: the scalpel-and-frog toting type. [[spoiler:Subverted, he was a mostly normal kid who was learning to become a doctor. After Flevance's destruction, played straight; as a child he wrapped himself up in bombs, proclaiming that he wants to cause death and destruction, and asked Doflamingo if he could join his crew.]] It was because of this that Doflamingo thought he would grow up to be his right-hand man.
** [[spoiler:Eventually averted: Corazon's efforts to save him as well as crying in sympathy for his pain wore him down and he dropped his destructive desires.]]
* CreepyGood: For a pirate, Law has a surprisingly functional moral compass and really isn't such a bad guy deep down; at one point, he even expresses his disgust for Doflamingo's treatment of Dressrosa's citizens and declares his faith in the Straw Hats. Still, that doesn't stop him from being cruel to his enemies and generally intimidating and unfriendly, though.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: Which is getting more prominent after the TimeSkip, and appropriately works as nice {{Guyliner}}.
* CynicismCatalyst: [[spoiler:Having his home, friends, and family be completely razed to the ground by the World Government for having a lead disease everyone had completely wrong information about, and for being constantly refused proper treatment because of said wrong information, didn't do his sanity much good]].
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: The Op-Op Fruit [[spoiler:can grant eternal youth at the cost of the user's life.]] Doflamingo claims that he didn't want Law to eat the fruit back when Law was his valued subordinate for this reason.
* DarkAndTroubledPast
** [[spoiler:Law's family, friends, and country, known as Flevance, were exterminated by the World Government for false medical conditions of contagious lead poisoning. After suffering a mental breakdown, Law only wished to cause as much destruction as possible and joined Doflamingo's crew wishing to become like him before his eventual death of his lead disease in 3 years time.]]
** [[spoiler:Corazon, Doflamingo's younger brother, then began helping him search for a cure to his disease. Over 6 months the two grew closer together, as Corazon understood what Law's pain was like and went to great effort to find a cure for him. When Corazon obtained the Op-Op Fruit for Law, the solution to his disease, he was killed by Doflamingo. Corazon had also managed to set an escape for Law from Doflamingo's grasp. Corazon was the figure who loved and saved Law and Doflamingo only valued Law as an instrument to die for him; Law then set forth to carry on Corazon's goal to stop Doflamingo's evil.]]
* DeadlyDoctor: "Surgeon of Death" is pretty much a synonym to this trope's name.
* DeadpanSnarker: Practically his primary means of communication with the idiots of the Straw Hat crew & friends.
-->'''Bartolomeo:''' Oi! Trafalgar! I threw yours [wanted poster] out in the trash but just in case you were wondering, it went up to 500 million.\\
'''Law:''' Oh. Thanks. This is me caring.
* DeathGlare: Can do a very frightening one when he gets pissed. It became a RunningGag with Baby 5. He looks so scary that he brings Baby 5 to tears, who then clings to Buffalo for protection.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: According to SBS volume 84, this is how he met Shachi, Penguin and Bepo. The latter was being bullied by the former two when Law stepped in and beat the crap out of them; all three were attracted by Law ever since, and the rest is history.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He was once part of [[spoiler:Doflamingo's crew, having been recruited with the intention to mold him into the Third Corazon and Doffy's future right hand man]], but after [[spoiler:he killed Corazon, Law's father figure]], he went out of it and started plotting revenge.
* DefiantToTheEnd: In fact, he starts taunting both Caesar and [[spoiler:Vergo when they start squeezing his heart.]] Noticeable, since it's one of the few times in the Punk Hazard arc that he is not merely stoic and focused.
** [[spoiler:When Doflamingo prepares to shoot him and offers him the chance to instead die with his DangerousForbiddenTechnique and get one wish, Law wishes... for Doflamingo to bring back Rosinante and show remorse to Dressrosa,]] then flips him off and says that he'll never beat [[spoiler:the Straw Hats.]]
* DetachmentCombat: His favorite way of attacking enemies. Unlike Buggy, he does this to other people, disorienting them too badly to fight properly. Fortunately for his victims, they can put themselves back together as long as he lets them live.
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:A natural trait considering he is a D.]] Specific to Law however is he devised a plan over 13 years to have revenge on [[spoiler:Doflamingo for the death of Corazon. When the plan failed, he met Doflamingo in a battle that leads to having his arm severed but still wanting to finish off Doflamingo personally in a failed attack. As Luffy took over the fight, Law remained at the sight determined to observe the outcome and meet the consequences of victory or death.]]
* DishingOutDirt: He can use his Tact technique to make rock spikes come out of the ground to hit foes.
* DifficultButAwesome: The Op-Op Fruit is regarded as having the highest potential out of all Devil Fruits. When Law first ate it, however, he couldn't even use it to heal [[spoiler: Corazon]] from gunshots and a beating because he needed the medical knowledge of what he was doing first. It also tires him out simply by using it. When he's rested and knows what he's doing? The guy can cut mountains and flip battleships with ease.
* DissonantSerenity: Given the nature of his powers, and the fact that he's a PerpetualSmiler, his fights tend to lead to this.
* DistressedDude: The Dressrosa arc has not been kind to him. So far he's been beaten, shot, and kidnapped by [[spoiler:Doflamingo]], carried around helplessly by Luffy, had his ass beat again, and [[spoiler:had his arm ''ripped off'' by Doflamingo.]]
* DoctorsOrders: The fact that he can, to an extent, [[RealityWarper warp reality]] (i.e issue order on everything) inside his "room" is a practical application of this.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: He hates bread. Was just a one-off comment when he was staying at Thousand Sunny, but an official artwork by Oda (requested by a fan) showed Luffy and a monkey trying to force-feed Law with bread, which escalated into a full-on brawl. He also doesn't like umeboshi (pickled ume fruit).
* TheDogBitesBack: Law's entire plan was this. [[spoiler:His intentions weren't to go after Kaido; while that would be a nice bonus, his goal was really to get revenge on Doflamingo. If Law doesn't kill Doflamingo himself and dies during their fight, then the destruction of the SMILE factory will ensure that Doflamingo will die anyway at the hands of Kaido.]]
* DomainHolder: Has the power of the Op-Op Fruit, which allows him to perform spontaneous operations (hence the name) on anyone or anything inside a sphere of space created by him, which he calls "Room". He uses his medical knowledge to inflict whatever effects he wants with minimum effort. Also, he carries around a great sword as his scalpel.
* DoomedHometown: He hails from a city called Flevance or "The White City" which was [[spoiler: a mining city that got Amber Lead Disease from said exotic mineral they had mined and weren't told about it by the World Government who ''did'' know about long before the city started mining the material. The disease slowly but surely affected them, which results in turning their bodies white and giving them excruciating pain while they were slowly dying, and their successive generations' life expectations got lower over time. Worse, the royalty fled from the island, abandoning them. Because the neighboring countries thought that the disease was epidemic, they quarantined the city. Out of desperation, the people of Flevance started a war with the neighboring kingdoms and were burned to the ground.]]
* DrJerk: His blunt attitude makes him this. Such as when Jimbei asked him what would happen if Luffy keeps rampaging around after Law treated him, he simply said that Luffy's wounds would open up and he'd die.
* EnemyMine: What ''he'' wanted his alliance with Luffy to be. Luffy, however, never saw it like that, viewing it instead as a friendship agreement. Though Law still tries to deny it, it's implied that, at some point, [[HonoraryTrueCompanion he stopped seeing it this way, too]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His debut shows him of as a rather unsettling pirate who doesn't hesitate to flip off Eustass Kidd (who is the Supernova with the highest bounty). This foreshadows that he's not someone to be trifled with, as well as someone who shares Luffy's disrespect for authority. He also shows a softer side by freeing Jean Bart later on.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite his infamous cruelty, even he was disgusted when he found out that [[spoiler:Caesar Clown was drugging the children on Punk Hazard to ensure that they stayed.]] Justified given his history: Children being doomed to die due to the build up of toxins in their bodies must have brought back all sorts of memories.
* FaceFault: He is hilariously prone to these in the company of the Straw Hats. Luffy alone pulls out more of these than in the ''entire first half of the manga''. And that was back when he was more relaxed.
* FlippingTheBird:
** Does this to Kid at one point. In the anime, this was [[{{Bowdlerize}} censored]] to Law giving him a smug smile.
** Does it toward [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] after Law claims that Luffy shall kick his ass before the latter starts shooting him.
* FluffyTheTerrible: His crew, the "Heart Pirates". The name doesn't makes sense until we find out Law uses his power for tearing out the live hearts of his enemies. This gets [[{{ChekhovsBoomerang}} even more clever]] as it's revealed that [[spoiler: Law was once a member of the Donquixote family, who uses a card suit motif. The Heart seat of Doflamingo's Top Executives was supposed to be for Law before he defected.]] And as another bonus, [[spoiler:the reason why he left was due to the death of Corazon, Doflamingo's brother. [[{{Bilingual Bonus}} Corazon is Spanish]] for "heart", and Corazon was [[TheHeart Law's idol]], so the "Heart Pirates" might actually be named in tribute to him. It turns out the Heart seat of Doffy's Top Executives was Corazon's, and after his death it was left vacant for ''Law'' to take up.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Around the aftermath of the Paramount War arc, when Rayleigh said that he's going to train Luffy, Law remarked that "looks like the D is going to make a storm again... I wonder what the Dark King is up to." In Dressrosa, he mentions that the "D" will call up a storm again when Doflamingo asked why he allied himself with Luffy. [[spoiler:In 764, Rocinante told Law that, in the place where Roci comes from, the elders often said that the D people will always call up a storm whenever one makes himself known. Considering that Law is also revealed to be a D himself, what he said in 729 gives another meaning.]] In addition, Law placates his crew about not going into the New World just yet with the promise that once he's had the time to plan things out, they'll "steal the proper throne". While this intially [[RedHerring seems like a comment about who will be Pirate King]], instead it's about how [[spoiler: his ultimate goal was to take out Doflamingo, the king of Dressrosa.]]
** After removing the bullets Doflamingo shot him with, Law realized that Doflamingo had used lead bullets on him earlier and he seems to be pissed off by that fact. [[spoiler:Law used to have a terminal illness because of lead poisoning that is widespread throughout his country, and Doflamingo knew about all of it.]]
** Law's entire conflict with Doflamingo is this. [[spoiler:Their backstories reveal that the D are the mortal enemies of the World Nobles, an animosity that is implied to have gone on for ''centuries''. Law and Doflamingo are a D and a former World Noble, respectively, with the narrative inadvertently implying that their relationship was ''bound'' to turn antagonistic, regardless of its beginnings.]]
* FourIsDeath: Fittingly for the Surgeon of Death, his former bounty is at 440 million.
* FreakOut: [[spoiler:While still a young boy attending the academy in Flevance, Law was a kind and devoted child aspiring to become a great doctor like his father while happily going to festivals with his beloved family. Upon the destruction of his homeland, the annihilation of his classmates and family, and being diagnosed with no more than 3 years to live, Law suffered a mental breakdown becoming unstable, having wanted to join Doflamingo's crew so he could destroy everything around him. Only after having been cured of his illness by Corazon did Law have a change of heart.]]
* FreakyFridayFlip: He has the power to do it to other people by using the Op-Op Fruit to switch their hearts. Not literally, mind you, more like a cartoonish heart that seems to represent their soul or whatever. (He can ''literally'' steal hearts, too, but that's an entirely different thing.)
* FriendlyEnemy: He is willing to save a rival pirate because even a relationship with a future enemy is still a relationship. [[spoiler:Ironically, he ends up becoming ''friends'' with Luffy for real two years later.]]
* FromBadToWorse: Played for laughs with his alliance with Luffy. Law looks like he could break down and cry any minute now from the Straw Hat crew's eccentric natures, and all of Law's plans with the Straw Hats just sort of go up in smoke despite his best efforts, planning and pre-preparation (which turn out to be things like a crude map drawn by Bepo in a marker pen, not even having an official map of Dressrosa). And then played more seriously when Doflamingo outgambits Law and basically gets Fujitora to revoke Law's Warlord status by putting him on the spot (though Fujitora specifically gave Law a way to get around this and Law refused to take it), so now Law has to deal with Doflamingo AND a Marine Admiral at the same time. The whole thing escalates when [[spoiler:Usopp manages to undo Sugar's curse on all the toys]], causing mass chaos in Dressrosa and forcing Doffy to initiate the Birdcage plan; at this point Law decides that even though he originally wanted to just destroy Doffy's SMILE factory, Doffy now has to be personally stopped, even if Kaido would be pissed off at Luffy and Law as a result.
* GangOfHats: All of the Heart Pirates (minus the Captain and newest Jean Bart) wears the identical white boiler suit (and orange for the white talking bear). Post timeskip shows Jean Bart wearing the same outfit as the rest of the crew.
* GoodHairEvilHair: Sports a goatee, which usually indicates a mysterious persona, antiheroism and an outsider.
* GrayEyes: In the anime. Fitting considering how cold and unapproachable he is.
* GuestStarPartyMember: He allies with the Straw Hats in Punk Hazard, and is present all through Zou.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: His trademark. [[spoiler:Notably, of all the victims of this during the Punk Hazard arc, only ''one'' of them wasn't a victim of his.]]
* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler:Doflamingo severs his right arm in the heat of their battle. Doesn't stop him from grinding Doflamingo's organs to mush with his remaining hand via Gamma Knife, or grievously injuring Trebol using ''his severed arm''.]]
* HavingAHeart: [[spoiler:Literally. 101 of them.]]
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: When he first demonstrates his power it seems a bit ''odd'', and he's quite literally dwarfed by Luffy and Kid's abilities. Two years later, he's slicing up battleships for lulz and it's implied he became a Warlord by sending the Marines 100 ''still beating'' pirate hearts. [[UpToEleven And then he cuts a mountain in half]], [[CrowningMomentofAwesome while informing Doflamingo]] [[NewEraSpeech that the new generation has arrived]]]]. Later, Doflamingo reveals that the Op-Op Fruit is [[spoiler:considered to be among the best Devil Fruit out there. Specifically, with the Op-Op Fruit's potential to grant someone ''eternal youth'' -- though, ultimately, [[EquivalentExchange at the cost of the user's life]].]] He also literally gain his awesome power from a heart-shaped fruit.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Played with. Law is introduced as TheRival for Luffy alongside Kid, then saves Luffy's life, then seems to have gone full Heel by becoming a warlord, then swings into Face territory when we realize his true intentions in Dressrosa. However, his motives and end goal never really changed, he's spent the whole time gunning for Doflamingo, it just took a long time for that to come to light.
* HeroicRROD: Apparently using his Devil Fruit powers is physically draining, so Law tries to defy this trope by preserving his energy before upcoming major fights.
* HiddenDepths: Beneath the veneer of cruelty that he's built up for himself over the course of his career as a pirate, Law has real empathy and compassion for others, even if he rarely shows it. He displays genuine disgust for Caesar Clown's experiments, acquiesces to the Straw Hats' requests to save the young children trapped by the MadScientist, and values his partnership with them so much that he goes out of his way to keep them out of his personal conflict with Doflamingo. [[spoiler:To the point that if Luffy dies in the battle against Doflamingo, Law fully intends to follow him as penance for dragging him into what he considers his battle]].
* HonoraryTrueCompanion: Law becomes this to the Straw Hats thanks to their alliance. Initially, Law wanted to keep it as strictly an EnemyMine relationship, but Luffy [[MagneticHero being Luffy]], pulled him closer to the fold. By the time the Dressrosa arc ends, they're pretty much best friends and Law himself is the only one in denial about it.
* HowDoIShotWeb: In the flashback, just after he ate the Op-Op fruit, he tried to heal the wounded Corazon to no avail. The latter reminded him that this power is "not magic" and his medical expertise should help him.
* ImmortalityInducer: According to Doflamingo, [[spoiler: the ultimate technique of the Op-Op Fruit is to grant another person eternal youth. This fact has made it one of the most highly-sought Devil Fruits in the world. But using it will [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique cost the user's life]]. If word of that ever got out to the masses, Law would become one of the most wanted men ''on the planet''. It's implied that though Corazon's death defined Law's future, Law himself had already lost any chance he had of living a normal life the moment he ate the fruit]].
* InformedFlaw: Seems as such at first. Law is stated to be a coldly cruel pirate, and even Kid seemed a bit wary of the rumors surrounding him. From what was seen of him, though, Law seems to have a very friendly relationship with his crew, took pity on an enslaved pirate captain and risked his life to save Luffy for no particular reason. [[spoiler:Subverted to high hell, though, given the "resume" he sent to Marine HQ for a position among the Seven Warlords of the Sea.]]
* InSeriesNickname: He's been referred to as "Traffy" by the Straw Hats since the Punk Hazard Arc, as Luffy cannot pronounce Law's surname to save his life.
* IOweYouMyLife: For saving his life, Law became indebted to Corazon. [[spoiler:At the same time, he feels the freedom he obtained because of Corazon can't be repaid until he accomplishes Cora's greatest wish to stop his evil brother's madness.]]
* {{Irony}}:
** Doflamingo was rearing him to get the "Heart" seat (a fitting choice) of the executives within his [[PlayingCardMotifs card-theme based crew]]. But then Law betrayed him. After Doffy [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown punished Law for acting against him]], Doflamingo decided to interrogate Law while chaining him to the Heart seat.
** Law planned to use the Straw Hats as pawns in his gambit against Doflamingo. Things have gone so pear-shaped that Luffy is literally dragging Law along for the ride despite the latter's death threats and insistence they aren't friends, neither of which Luffy has even paid attention to. Truth of the matter is, Law was never in control of the situation to begin with.
** Doflamingo said that if Law were really going to kill him, he might've done it by pitting Doffy against Kaido, but he instead comes directly at him. Little does Doffy know that that was ''exactly'' what Law had planned - before Luffy threw that plan out of the window.
* ItAmusedMe: Or rather, It ''Will'' Amuse Me. His stated reason for saving Luffy from the Marines was because it'd be "too lame" if he had died then and there.
** This is Law's fighting style in general. His ability allows him to cut his opponents' body parts without actually killing or harming them. In his first on-screen fight in the series he was '''juggling the body parts of marines.'''
** After defeating Tashigi and leaving her alive, after chopping her in half, she demands that Law finishes her off. He instead taunts her and decides it would be more fun to cut her into even smaller pieces.
* ItsPersonal: He made things personal with [[spoiler:his former boss, Donquixote Doflamingo, when he betrayed him and killed two loyal subordinates, along with setting him up to be royally fucked over]]. It all started however, when [[spoiler:13 years ago Doflamingo had murdered his younger brother Corazon who had saved Law's life.]]
** [[spoiler:He ended the alliance with the Straw Hats, revealing to Doflamingo that he only intended to have them destroy the SMILE factory to ensure that no matter what happens, Doflamingo will die, as he was the main target all along. Law never intended to go after Kaido, as his desire to have revenge on Doflamingo for murdering Corazon 13 years prior,]] and as much as he would love to see the chaos that would enfold after [[spoiler:Doflamingo]]'s death, he is fully prepared to die if necessary to get his revenge.
** Later on, he would also admit outright [[spoiler:to Luffy that despite doing as many indirect things to screw Doflamingo over, due to how his plans against him started to fall apart, Law himself decides to settle with hurting Doflamingo directly like several others have wanted as well.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In his backstory he used to be quite the jerk (a jerk with a bad past, but still), but then his idol Corazon's actions has made him more caring towards the lives of his closest associates. Nowadays he's still rather cold to everyone, but if someone close to him needs helping, he will do it. He also has a soft spot for sick (and poisoned) children, which is not surprising considering his past.
** To further drive the point home, [[spoiler:he clearly is enraged by Doflamingo's treatment of the Dressrosan citizens. When asked what his final wish is, Law demands that Doflamingo bring Corazon back and follows that with a demand for Doffy to "lick the ass of every single citizen in this country," showing that he's not beyond caring for innocents.]]
* KatanasAreJustBetter: His weapon of choice is a nodachi, which he uses as a sort of "doctor's scalpel" when using his powers to chop things up at long range.
* KiAttacks: He is a confirmed user of Haki, which is probably how he was able to [[spoiler:cut Smoker's heart out.]]
* KickTheDog: "Weaklings can't pick their way of death." is a line he tells Tashigi when she berates him for not killing her after slicing her apart. [[spoiler: It's a line he picked up from his former captain, Doflamingo.]]
* KnewItAllAlong: Was perfectly aware that [[spoiler:Corazon was lying to him about not being a marine]], but clearly didn't care. [[spoiler:When Corazon (discreetly) told him that he was sorry that he lied, as he didn't want Law to hate him (a statement that, outside of context, was supposedly directed to his brother Doflamingo), Law barely notes it, more worried about Corazon's safety.]]
* KubrickStare: Complementing his intimidating presence to the opponents. Occasionally accompanied by the mysterious vibes of {{Hidden Eyes}} and {{Face Framed In Shadow}} from underneath his hat.
* LaserBlade: His Gamma Knife technique has him making a small blade of PureEnergy that is used to cut through internal organs.
* LaserGuidedKarma: For all his deeds, he [[spoiler:gets his own heart removed and squeezed by Vergo, briefly passing out in agony]].
** For all the limb-cutting that he did, he [[spoiler:gets his right arm severed by Doflamingo. Painfully, of course.]]
** That being said, he also gets the positive version of this, in a big way. He and his crew [[spoiler:risked their lives to rescue Luffy from Marineford]] despite having absolutely no obligation whatsoever to do so, and in spite of the fact that [[spoiler:Luffy, as a fellow pirate searching for One Piece, is actually a rival of theirs.]] As a result, [[spoiler:Luffy already likes and trusts Law when they meet again in two years and gladly agrees to ally with him; this alliance eventually leads to Luffy and his friends/allies defeating Doflamingo and bringing down his entire empire -- a goal Law had spent ''thirteen years'' trying to accomplish -- while saving Law's life multiple times in the process]].
* LeanAndMean: While he isn't extremely thin, he does stand out since the standard male in One Piece is either [[{{TheBigGuy}} big]] and [[{{HeroicBuild}} very muscular]] or [[{{TheBrute}} massive]] and [[{{TopHeavyGuy}} extremely muscular.]] He's not as mean as many of the pirates in the setting, but is significantly colder and more anti-heroic than the Straw Hats.
* LoneSurvivor: Excluding the royal family who escaped early, he is the last known survivor of [[spoiler: Flevance.]]
* MaddenIntoMisanthropy: The Law that [[spoiler:appeared before Doflamingo looking to destroy everything in sight]], and even the Law today, is the way he is because of his very traumatic childhood: [[spoiler:He grew up in Flevance, or "The White City", where the people were slowly dying from Amber Lead. While studying to become a doctor to grow up to treat the illness, the war the country became involved in killed his family and everyone he ever knew. And he only survived by ''hiding in the dead bodies'' carted out of the quarantine zone.]] That would screw up anyone.
* MadDoctor: When he treats Luffy and Jimbei, he notes that they can't protest if he doesn't use anesthesia, and determines that it's going to be a "fun" operation. Not to mention the deal with his "operation room" power and the antics he does with it.
* MeaningfulName: The Heart Pirates were most likely named after Corazon, which means "heart" in Spanish.
** Law's full name, [[spoiler:Trafalgar D. Water Law, seems to be taken from two famous battles in real world history, the Battle of Trafalgar and the Battle of Waterloo]].
* MagnificentMustachesOfMexico: Subverted when he's rocking one in the Dressrosa Arc, during his disguise towards Green Bit.
* MessyHair: In fact, without the hat he resembles Luffy. He's still [[UnkemptBeauty quite]] [[MrFanservice attractive]] though.
* MindOverMatter: His "Tact" technique, which allows him to levitate stuff inside Room.
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate: Subverted. Despite the way he [[TrustMeImADoctor announces his profession]] (on top of being a pirate), and the fact that his RedBaron is "Surgeon of Death", he is a pretty damn skilled doctor, because he was able to save [[spoiler: both Luffy and Jimbei from the brink of death, despite how serious the injuries they had received during the war were]].
* MrFanservice: Just look at him and try to say he isn't.
* MultipleGunshotDeath: Subverted. [[spoiler:Doflamingo became infuriated with Law's revenge ploy; mindlessly emptying his pistol on Law while ranting and belittling him for not holding the heart seat and misunderstanding the tribute to Corazon that Law represents.]] Doffy even says along the lines of "Luffy will be surprised to find your body" after he does it. Law isn't killed however, having [[spoiler:switched his body with a corpse before being shot.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: He's named after a ([[spoiler:or rather, two]]) historical war, ''and'' a notoriously cruel real life pirate. And dude is surely good at stirring up chaos if he wants to.
* NervesOfSteel: During the moment [[spoiler:when Doflamingo chooses to taunt him over Corazon's failed attempt to save Dressrosa, Law dismisses the idea that the situation could have been averted,]] which even surprises [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] on how level-headed he is.
** [[spoiler:Then, when he taunts the beaten and bloodied Law again and offers to let him die via the Immortality Surgery in exchange for one last wish, Law smiles, agrees... and wishes for Doflamingo to bring Corazon back to life and then lick the asshole of every single citizen in Dressrosa, before promptly flipping him off and telling him that he'll never beat the Straw Hats or get Caesar back]].
* NewEraSpeech: Gives an epic one to Doflamingo.
* NiceHat: To the point when [[spoiler:he gets his heart back and is ready to fight]] he calls back his hat and puts it on his head.
** Ever since his childhood he's always seen with a white bowler hat. After the TimeSkip it is changed into a white newsboy cap. All with the same black patterns on them.
* NinjaLog: His "Shambles" move allows him to switch things around -- that includes switching himself with objects. He even uses a literal log when saving Sanji from Doflamingo.
* NobleDemon: Law may have sent [[spoiler:one hundred hearts of pirates to the Marines as his application to become a Warlord]], however he reacts with disgust to [[spoiler:Caesar's disregard to the children, knowing they would die and the MadScientist just doesn't care.]]
* NoBadassToHisValet: Despite his massive power, having a huge bounty, and being an ally to Luffy, Bartolomeo does not care about him at all as he throws Law's new bounty poster in the trash and refuses to give him any of his provisions, but is more then willing to give it all to Luffy.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Bears more than a passing resemblance to Mystery, the Pickup Artist, in both looks and dress. May help explain his popularity. Also to the well-known Italian Moto GP World Champion Valentino Rossi, who is also conveniently known as ''"The Doctor"''.
* NotAfraidToDie: While having his heart squeezed by Caesar and [[spoiler:Vergo]], instead of begging for mercy Law merely taunts them into squeezing it ''harder''. [[spoiler:This, along with Law's own admission that he doesn't care if he has to die to get his revenge on Doflamingo, were one of the first real indicators of his real name.]]
** Likewise, [[spoiler: after having his arm cut off and beaten by both Doflamingo and Trebol, Doflamingo offers Law anything in exchange for the immortality operation.]] Law just flips him off, tells him where he can stick his offer and states [[spoiler:the Straw Hats are gonna kick his ass before Doflamingo shoots him again.]]
** It provides a contrast to [[spoiler:Doflamingo's ImmortalitySeeker. Doflamingo, while it hasn't been prominent so far, has a clear fear of death that led to his obsession over the Op-Op fruit. Law, on top of being D, has no fear of death considering that the only reason he survived to this very day was for the sake of the man who saved his life and gave him the chance to live at the cost of his own. Thus, he has no interest in his devil fruit's ability to grant immortality and gleefully mocks Doflamingo when the latter attempts to coerce him into using it on him]].
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Not outright pointed out, but Law is one of the very few men not taken by the extreme beauty of Boa Hancock and the rest of the Kuja Pirates. It could be that he is "a doctor before all else" kind of person and that his mellow and laidback personality makes it much more difficult for him to be visibly flustered and swept away.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Since their alliance, Law has been simply shocked at how goofy the Straw Hats are, despite their reputation for being a thorn in the World Government's side. He's kept his cool as being the OnlySaneMan... until Sanji said he's making sandwiches for breakfast. Law admitted he didn't like bread.
** This has actually been happening in small doses ever since the alliance was established, but this is the most blatant example. The more time Law has spent with the Straw Hats, the more susceptible he is to taking part of their hijinks. It's not long before he realizes that Luffy's not going to be the UnwittingPawn that Law expected him to be, or that he was never really in control of the alliance in the first place.
** In ch. 817, he joins the crew (which also includes Zoro) on speculating cool things that a ninja like Raizo can do. He specifically says "a clone jutsu would be nice." [[spoiler:Sure enough, clone jutsu is one of what Raizo displays seconds after.]]
* NotSoDifferent: Lampshaded by Nami when he gives orders to Nami, Chopper, and Brook without listening to them or knowing their current dilemma just like Luffy. [[spoiler:Then, when you learn his real name...]]
** Much more seriously, to Doflamingo, which [[spoiler:the latter idly notes during their battle (after Law had landed a seemingly fatal blow on him)]], and which Law fully acknowledges. Both are powerful, charismatic men with a penchant for cruelty and misanthropy, but the differences they do have are what fully separates them, as Law has compassion, mercy, and care for others (even if he doesn't show it all the time), all qualities that Doflamingo lacks. [[spoiler:The divide becomes very clear when you realize that Law's entire life has ultimately been for the sake of another, whereas those Doflamingo cherishes are those readily "convenient" to ''him'', and makes it very clear that he only lives for the sake of himself]].
* NotSoStoic: The antics of Luffy's crew are beyond even his ability to resist.
* NotWhatISignedOnFor: After finding out just what Caesar Clown was doing with the kids, he basically told him that he wanted no part of it and was done working with him.
** On a more humorous note, Law's pirate alliance doesn't quite turn out the way he'd anticipated, mostly because [[spoiler:Luffy sees the alliance as a friendship pact rather than a business relationship]]. Which seems to have rubbed off on Law as well, since [[spoiler:Admiral Fujitora tells Law he'll be given a pass for everything he's done if he just says the Straw Hats are his minions (since the Seven Warlords are allowed to do such things) and Law defiantly says that Luffy is his ''partner'']].
* OhCrap: His reaction upon realizing that [[spoiler: a) Doflamingo did not actually abdicate his post on the Warlords, b) that he used that whole ordeal as a way of luring him into his territory, and c) that he and Admiral Fujitora are closing in on him and preparing to kick his ass.]]
** A part of that is the implications of what [[spoiler:Doflamingo did. Fooling the entire world just for a mere ten people is something way beyond the power of a Warlord. The only people who have the power to pull off such a thing... are the '''''World Nobles'''''.]] It's understandable that Law would freak out at the possibility that [[spoiler:one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea is a World Noble, let alone the most psychotic and dangerous one.]]
** Another one is when he realized that [[spoiler:Doflamingo is going to use the Birdcage.]]
* OmnicidalManiac: [[spoiler:After witnessing everyone he loved died as a child, he desired to become like Doflamingo and cause as much destruction as possible, also feeling that's all he could accomplish before he died of his lead disease. Until Corazon managed to save him from his illness and showed him compassion.]]
* OnlySaneMan: [[spoiler:In comparison to the Straw Hats. As time goes on, it becomes evident that not even he is immune to their hijinks.]]
* PerpetualSmiler: Which verges on DissonantSerenity. The trait is downplayed after the timeskip.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Especially considering he ''[[spoiler:cut a mountain in half]]''.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:Despite his desire for revenge on Doflamingo, Law has no desire for the Straw Hats to get in the crossfire, stating that their conflict [[ItsPersonal has nothing to do with them]]. This leads to him taking many risks to save their lives.]]
* PsychoticSmirk: His ''glorious'' one [[spoiler: when finally getting access to the SAD room]] causes a lot of people to once again question his intentions.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives a rather nice one to [[spoiler: Doflamingo]].
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Kid's Red when they were first introduced. Kid is a FieryRedhead while Law is a snarker with blue/black hair.
** Later becomes the Blue to Luffy's Red.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Notably averted, at least in regards to the medical applications of the Op-Op Fruit. The fruit is only useful to someone who is ''already'' a trained doctor, implying that Law's great feats of abilities with his fruit come not just from any inherent power of the fruit itself but from his own knowledge of medicine and anatomy. [[spoiler:When he tried to heal Corazon as a child, he had to be reminded that the fruit was not magic]].
* TheReveal: In the past, Buffalo and Baby 5 wanted to know his full name. He eventually caved, revealing it's [[spoiler:Trafalgar '''''D.''''' Water Law]].
* RichesToRags: In the flashback scenes, he began as a little boy who comes from a wealthy, reputable family who used to live in a castle-like home and wore tailor-made suits. Was forced to crawl among the dead bodies as a fugitive after the Flevance tragedy striked before he decided to encounter the Donquixote Pirates at the dumpster to become one of his flunkies.
* SadisticChoice: Gives one to [[spoiler:Doflamingo after he and the Straw Hats capture Caesar. Either Doflamingo quits the Seven Warlords of the Sea and goes back to being a regular pirate, after which Law will give Caesar back to him to continue making SMILE Devil Fruits for Kaido, or he doesn't and lose the manufacturer for SMILES. [[MortonsFork He's screwed either way]], because if he stays, he won't be able to produce SMILES for Kaido and will have to face his wrath, and if he quits, the Admirals will hunt him down. Ultimately fails since Doflamingo has the connections to ''fake'' quitting the Warlords.]]
* SecretLegacy: Law was completely unaware of the significance of [[spoiler:the "D" in his name, just like most of the D. carriers in the series such as Luffy -- all he knew is that he had to keep it a secret. However, Corazon, and presumably Doflamingo, knew about it, or at least enough to warn Law to stay away from his brother]].
** [[spoiler:Like (almost) all of the D bearers, he isn't afraid at the prospect of death, as seen when he's grinning after he gets his heart squeezed by Vergo, and later is willing to die fighting Doflamingo just to avenge Corazon.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Adding to his surgery motif, he can apparently use his palms as defibrillator paddles in an attack called "Counter Shock".
* SpannerInTheWorks: The one ultimately responsible for the clusterfuck that is the Dressrosa arc. By allying with Luffy, Law put the Straw Hats on a collision course with the Donquixote Family, and the resulting conflict has escalated to the point that it involves nearly every major power in the world, [[spoiler:including the Revolutionary Army and the World Nobles]]. Thing is, he doesn't give a shit about ''any'' of it. [[spoiler:Everything he has done for the last thirteen years to this very day has been for the sake of avenging Corazon's murder and killing Doflamingo. If the world has to go to shit in order for him to have Doflamingo's head, then Law will gladly drag this world to hell with him]].
** During the final battle of the arc [[spoiler: despite being incapacitated by Doflamingo, Law still manages to interfere in the fight from the sidelines.]]
* SpellBlade: His Radio Knife technique has him channeling electricity to his nodachi to cause WoundThatWillNotHeal.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Does this constantly since his reintroduction after the timeskip.
* StraightManAndWiseGuy: The Straight Man to Luffy's Wise Guy. [[spoiler:As of 748, they have this trope down to a T.]]
* SuperPowerLottery: His Devil Fruit's English name (Op-Op Fruit) is fitting in more ways than one. Law actually has several ways to easily OneHitKill characters while inside his Room, whether be it through dismembering them from afar, teleporting them away, swapping their souls, taking away (or crushing) their organs. What keeps it from being a StoryBreakerPower are the drawbacks for its use, which include draining his stamina.
* SubmarinePirates: His crew primarily ride a submarine.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Seems cold, heartless and tad evil [[spoiler:but actually harboring deep feelings of affection towards his late saviour Corazon, who's possibly the only one who saw his amiable smiling side since the Flevance tragedy.]] Usually calm and calculating, he can be blinded by hot-blooded fury [[spoiler:especially concerning Doflamingo.]] The guy is also generally polite in his speech and even takes off his hat at the dining table but didn't hesitate to rudely flip other people off.
* SuperDoc: Law is quite possibly the best doctor in the One Piece world, as his Devil Fruit allows him to perform all kinds of miraculous surgeries, assuming he knows how to perform them.
* SuperpowerLottery: Literally ''everything'' inside his "Room" is his to command, and post-TimeSkip he's been shown [[spoiler:to create battleship- and even ''mountain''-sized "Rooms."]] There's no known way around it once you're inside the "Room," either, apart from having sufficient Haki. His power of surgery, aside from conveniences like swapping people's bodies, taking out their heart and personality transplants, is also later revealed to be able to [[spoiler:grant eternal youth at the cost of his own life]]. Doflamingo outright stated that many people consider this to be 'The Ultimate Devil's Fruit'.
* SymbolMotifClothing: Law wears the emblem of the Heart Pirates on his hoodie, on the hem and sleeve of his all-new dapper {{Badass Longcoat}} and on the chest of his most recent fabulous feathery-necked outfit. Besides, all the Heart Pirates including his submarine, even his own Transponder Snail, wear the insignia with pride. [[spoiler:The emblem was created in honor of the man who saved his life and whom he now dedicates his life to avenge, Corazon.]]
* TheStoic: It's hard to get this guy to flinch, though he's not above having fun.
* TheWorfEffect: Really got hit with this hard when [[spoiler: he finally took on Doflamingo. The first time, Law had to deal with both Issho and him so yeah understandable. By the time they ''do'' fight one on one on the bridge, he's not at his best. However, when they re-match again at the moved palace by the time he's recovered, Doflamingo still trounces him easily, costing him an arm. He keeps fighting even when it becomes two on one again (as Trebol was aiding Doflamingo this time) but even when he ''finally'' gets a good fatal hit in on Doflamingo, it's revealed the warlord has a healing ability. Ouch.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: What he tried to do to [[spoiler:Doflamingo.]]
* TallDarkAndHandsome[=/=]TallDarkAndSnarky: Both apply, as he is fairly tall and slender, [[MrFanservice very good-looking]], a much darker shade of gray morality-wise than the Straw Hats, and quite the DeadpanSnarker.
* TattooedCrook: Has several "smiley" tattoos on his arms (WordOfGod says jolly rogers in North Blue are typically this shape), as well as DEATH on his fingers. Also has a big heart-shaped tatoo on his chest.
** [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/File:SBS71_3_Law_Tattoos.png He's got tats all over his upper body.]]
* TigerVersusDragon: Rather subtle than most, it exists in him vs. Doflamingo. Him having "Tora" (tiger) in his name (and sometimes called "Tora-guy") and having a vendetta with Doffy, [[spoiler:a Celestial Dragon.]]
* TogetherInDeath: After doing everything he can in [[spoiler:the final fight against Doflamingo before being forced to leave the rest to Luffy, he requests that Cavendish leave him in the flower fields to watch the battle. If Luffy wins, he wants to be there to see it; if Luffy falls, then as penance for dragging his partner ("friend" being implied) into this fight, he'll allow Doflamingo to kill him and join Luffy and Corazon in death. Cavendish agrees -- on the caveat that he'd be allowed to stay as well, and tells Law that he won't die unless Cavendish does first]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Pre-time skip he was a rookie captain, just about strong enough to reach the halfway point in the Grand Line with a bounty of 200 million Berries, and was barely capable of facing a Pacifista allied with Kid's crew and survive. Two years later, [[spoiler:his bounty doubled before the WG approached him for a Warlord position; he apparently regularly heads off to a closed-off, highly toxic island [[HailfirePeaks with extreme climates on both halves]], and home to [[EverythingIsTryingToKillYou ex-cons, a variety of strange creatures]] [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and giant children]] calling it his "favorite holiday spot"; and he is capable of defeating Vice-Admiral-level opponents]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He likes onigiri and grilled fish.
* TwentyBearAsses: [[spoiler:Rose to the position of Warlord of the Sea by extracting 100 pirates' hearts and sending them to Marine HQ.]]
* TykeBomb: Law was raised by Doflamingo to be his right-hand man. To this end, he taught him just about everything he (and his execs) knew about fighting.
* UndyingLoyalty: To [[spoiler: Donquixote Rocinante aka Corazon.]] Law outright states that [[spoiler: Corazon]] is his most cherished person, that the only reason he bothered to live was to fulfill [[spoiler: Corazon's]] goal, and that he would happily destroy the entire world and die as long as it was for [[spoiler: Corazon's]] sake. Law's entire grudge with Doflamingo stems from Doflamingo [[spoiler: killing Corazon]], which causes Law to dedicate his entire life, as well as being willing to die, in order to bring Doflamingo down in his revenge.
** [[spoiler:Law was so devoted to Corazon that he is willing to do what Corazon ''wouldn't'' do in the end, no matter how horrible his older brother was, how much he hated him, and how much Doflamingo honestly needed to die -- ''[[DeadlyEuphemism pull the trigger]]''.]]
** [[SerialEscalation In addition to all of that]], it doesn't hurt that it's heavily implied that Law named his crew after [[spoiler: Corazon]] and even tattooed his [[spoiler: smile]] onto his chest.
* UngratefulBastard: Doflamingo considers Law to be this, since he spent years raising Law to be his top lieutenant only for Law to turn against him. However, he also acknowledges that if the specific incident that Law is raging against him for had never happened, then Law would have been [[spoiler:the third "Corazon".]]
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: Downplayed. During his and Luffy's fight with Doflamingo, Law says something about their "secret plan"; Luffy, who was really angry at that point, screams "screw the plan!" and goes after Law instead. Turns out Law's "plan" was [[spoiler:relying on Doflamingo to make Luffy angry enough, and as Luffy comes at him, Law activates Room and switches himself with the distracted Doflamingo - who then gets hit by Luffy's Red Hawk.]]
** [[spoiler: He reverses it when Luffy manages to make his way back up to Doflamingo, revealing he isn't dead after he was shot again. This time Luffy rushes Doflamingo but Law switches Luffy with himself, getting close enough to land a fatal blow on Doflamingo.]]
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Despite his dour appearance even as a child, Law was a much warmer person than he is now. [[spoiler:It was his country's war and the illness that caused it, that took that away from him. Doflamingo's influence seemed to be the nail-in-the-coffin. Thankfully for all, his close relationship with Corazon helped him regain the little compassion and mercy he ''does'' still have]].
* VisualDevelopment: Law's appearance after the Time Skip coincides with his [[spoiler:new Warlord title]], level of power and manners: from the laid-back, smiling yellow-themed hoodie-wearing hipster-style Supernova to the lugubrious terrifying Warlord who is clad in black, {{The Grim Reaper}}-like {{Black Cloak}}, complete with the {{High Collar Of Doom}}. Between Punk Hazard and Dressrosa he goes back to the hipster look (seemingly coinciding with his start to fall into the pace of the Straw Hat crew), before hybridizing the two for his "disguise" outfit in Dressrosa.
** However he is ''always'' wearing the [[CostumeInertia same spotted skinny jeans.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: Post-timeskip, Law has pretty much [[CharacterizationMarchesOn become a]] PerpetualFrowner, and the smiles he does sport are usually some kind of SlasherSmile. So on the few occasions that he ''does'' smile genuinely (such as during the celebration of Doflamingo's defeat, after reuniting with his crew, and a few times as a child in his flashback), it definitely stands out.
* WildCard: Big time, even among the Supernovas. He saved Luffy from being executed by the World Government, but then quickly makes it known that [[IWasJustPassingThrough he doesn't consider Luffy an ally.]] Post time skip, [[spoiler: he ''joins'' the World Government, becoming a Warlord]]... but only in an effort to pin down Doflamingo [[spoiler: and he loses the title in Dressrosa.]] And he's perfectly willing to [[spoiler: ally himself with Luffy to betray his current partner and take out one of the emperors, because Luffy is also a WildCard and it can only help to double down in this situation.]]
* WorthLivingFor: [[spoiler:Law, along with his friends, family, and city, were used up by the World Government to dig up the Amber Lead for wealth, and then all of them were cruelly abandoned thanks to a disease that would kill him before he even reached adulthood. Because of that, he wanted to destroy everything in sight -- until Corazon showed him love and compassion, and eventually succeeded in getting the means to cure Law of his disease. Law fully intended to spend the rest of his life with him -- but then Corazon was killed.]] Now, the ''only'' reason why Law bothered living to this very day was [[spoiler:to kill Donquixote Doflamingo, Corazon's murderer]].
** [[spoiler: After Doflamingo's defeat, Law is finally able to get closure by meeting Corazon's surrogate father, Sengoku. Holding a burden that Corazon might have been motivated to serve the Will of D, Sengoku assures him that his actions have nothing to do with the D but were made out of love for Law, and that he should continue living free if he really wanted to pay tribute to Corazon's actions.]]
* WorfHadTheFlu: He gets taken down by Vergo because Vergo has his heart. [[spoiler:Once he gets it back, Vergo goes down in one move.]]
** Also, by the time he finally got his one-on-one fight with [[spoiler: Doflamingo, he had fought Admiral Fujitora and Doflamingo at the same time, while having to watch Caesar and then protect the Straw Hats.]] So, he was pretty tired heading in, which is even worse for him than normal as his Op-Op Fruit specifically relies on his stamina.
* WorthyOpponent: Certainly considers Luffy to be one. Time will tell if it sticks.
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: He can inflict this with his devil fruit powers, to an extent that ''even a Logia user cannot regenerate their form.'' [[spoiler: Just ask Trebol.]]
* XanatosGambit: His plan for [[spoiler:revenge on Doflamingo, which he allied with the Straw Hats for. Law made it so that even if Doflamingo kills him in their battle, the destruction of the SMILE factory will ensure that Kaido will finish the job for him and kill Doflamingo himself.]]
* YourDaysAreNumbered: When he first met Doflamingo as a child, Law claimed he only had 3 years left to live. [[spoiler:This is because of the amount of Amber Lead in his body, the poison which would ensure he would die before he reached adulthood, just like his peers, had they not been killed beforehand. He survived because Corazon had stolen the Op-Op Fruit from other pirates and was responsible for saving Law. The fruit granting the ability to modify and restructure the body was the perfect solution to removing the Amber Lead]].

[[folder:"Roar of the Sea" Scratchmen Apoo]]
--> "''Apapapapapapa! Check it out!''"

->Voiced by: Creator/MitsuakiMadono (JP), Brad Venable (EN)

Being from the Longarm Tribe in the Grand Line, Scratchmen Apoo as such [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin has arms so long]], they're ''double''-jointed. Captain of the On Air Pirates, Apoo's bounty is 350 million berries. Although Apoo's fighting style seems to be mostly defensive, as shown with his brief skirmish with another of the Supernovas, [[AxCrazy Eustass]] [[ExtraOreDinary Kid]], he still can't deny himself a good brawl should the opportunity present itself. He seems to be rather perceptive as when witnessing another Supernova Roronoa Zoro of the Straw Hat Pirates nearly attack a World Noble, he noted he gave off an "[[BloodKnight insane killing intent]]". His (unnamed) Devil Fruit power turns him into a MusicalAssassin and a one-man instrument kit, as well as mostly the reason for his [[{{Gonk}} strange appearance]]. The music he makes by playing himself, is not only mesmerizing, it's also ''deadly''; he can make clean cuts by making the "chopping" sound, or cause an explosion by making the sound of StuffBlowingUp.

After the Time Skip, he strikes an alliance with Kid and Hawkins.

His first known bounty was 198,000,000 berries. His current bounty is 350,000,000 berries.
* CatchPhrase: "Check it out!"
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Almost got away with it to Admiral Kizaru, no less.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: He is of the Longarm Tribe. They are people with long arms.
* GangOfHats: Both he and his crew have a [[ChinesePeople Chinese]] theme, though it's later shown that the Longarm Tribe in general are Chinese-themed.
* {{Gonk}}: More weird-looking than ugly, though.
* HypnoFool: Not exactly like Jango, but some of his instruments can mesmerize people for a little while.
* InstrumentOfMurder: He doesn't have one, he ''is'' one. Several, in fact.
* MagicMusic: In the anime, the sounds from the various instruments his body becomes have different effects, e.g. the sound of his jaw-cymbal slices things and the sound of his chest-drum creates explosions.
* MusicalAssassin: Has a Devil Fruit that ''turned'' him into an actual human-instrument, so this is pretty much his signature ability.
* ProperlyParanoid: After the time-skip, it is shown that if he is ever invited over by an enemy, he will destroy their ship just in case they're hiding something like a sniper.
** During the war, he correctly guessed that the transmission was cut because there was something the marines did not want the world to see.
* PunnyName: He first name refers to his musical powers and DJ-like fighting stance.
* RealMenWearPink: Apoo's post-time skip robe.
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: And whatever sound effect he says, its corresponding effect occurs.
* SlasherSmile: Shaped like piano keys.
* SmugSnake: Has a little bit of this, but not as bad as Buggy or "Mr. 3" Galdino.
* StoryBreakerPower: Kindasorta. His sound powers have enough oomph behind them to deal what would've been a fatal wound to ''an Admiral'' had he not been a Logia, so he's certainly one to watch.
* TookALevelInBadass: From 198 million to 350 million in two years, overtaking Hawkins' who previously had the third highest bounty.
* {{Troll}}: He tells a terrified subordinate that you can't just run from a dangerous enemy, you have to make them mad first.

[[folder:"Massacre Soldier" Killer]]
--> "''You got lucky''"

->Voiced by: Creator/KenjiHamada (JP), Leo Fabian (EN)

Killer is the first mate to the Kid Pirates, and one of the eleven pirates dubbed with the moniker "Supernova". A man of few words, much of Killer's personality is unknown, except he is slightly arrogant, yet ''much'' more level-headed than his captain.

His first known bounty was 162,000,000 berries. His current bounty is 200,000,000 berries.
* AerithAndBob: All the other Supernovas have well though-out names referencing something. For Killer, WordOfGod says that the author took about five seconds to think the name.
* AnimeHair: Long, wild, [[Franchise/DragonBall Super Saiyan 3-like]] blonde hair, to be precise.
* BadassNormal: He's the only Supernova besides Zoro not shown to have a Devil Fruit.
* BlindingBangs: Sported this look as a kid.
* TheComicallySerious: This otherwise level-headed first mate eats his favorite food spaghetti through the holes in his mask.
* DeathbringerTheAdorable: You'd think with a name like Killer, he'd be more unstable than Kidd, but he's actually more calm-minded and level headed than most of the other Supernovas.
* TheDragon: Considering Killer is basically Kid's bodyguard, he is definitely filling this role. Especially considering he balances out Kid's nasty temper. [[spoiler: For example, he actually tries to salvage the peace negotiations between Kid, Hawkins, and Apoo before a fight breaks out]].
* EvilCounterpart: To Zoro. Both are Supernovas with no Devil Fruit powers and are swordsmen. They're also the only Supernovas who aren't captains.
* TheFaceless: He's never seen without his mask. Hell, he never even takes it off, not even to eat!
* TheGenericGuy: While the other Supernovas all have [[MeaningfulName Meaningful Names]] in one way or another, according to Word Of God, Killer was given a generic "cool" sounding name and design out of pure laziness. Not to mention out of the Supernovas, he appears to have the most unremarkable personality.
* GangOfHats: Like Kidd and the crew, he has a Heavy Metal theme.
* HypercompetentSidekick: What did Kid even do to get this guy on his crew? Killer is much, much more level-headed than his boss, to the point where [[spoiler: he arranges most of Kid's black market visits and generally every meeting to minimize the risk of his captain ripping some guy a new orifice, just in case they push one of Kid's many, many berserk buttons.]]
* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: [[DualWielding A pair of]] [[EverythingsBetterWithSpinning spinning,]] [[DualTonfas reverse-wielded,]] [[BladeBelowTheShoulder wrist-mounted]] [[SinisterScythe sickle-things.]]
* LeanAndMean: Averted post-timeskip, though, as he's put on quite a bit of muscle.
* MaskPower: He always wears a metal helmet that covers his face.
* MrExposition: Knows a surprising deal about Marine ships and traditions.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: You know, the fact that his actual ''name'' is "[[AwesomeMcCoolname Killer]]".
* NotSoStoic: He's visibly annoyed by Kid's argument with [[spoiler:Apoo and Hawkins, namely since they should actually be discussing the potential alliance]].
* NumberTwo: To Kid.
* OddNameOut: The only Supernova aside from Luffy who wasn't named after a real life pirate. Oda admitted Killer's name was chosen out of laziness.
* OlderSidekick: By four years according to WordOfGod, in yet another parallel with Zoro.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: As shown in one SBS, he already liked spaghetti ever since he was a kid. As nowadays he wears a mask that covers his whole face, the mask has little holes in it to help him eat his spaghetti.

[[folder:"Big Eater" Jewelry Bonney]]

->Voiced by: Creator/ReikoKiuchi (JP), Laura Wetsel (EN)

The only female Supernova, Bonney has one of the more stereotypical views on what a pirate should be like in the series, which is a completely amoral person who destroys all in their way and looks out only for themselves. She has proven to be a very rude and unpleasant woman who has a [[BigEater monstrous appetite]] and holds deep grudges for people who irritate her in any way, currently setting her sights on the Straw Hats. As a captain, she shows conflicting displays of competence. She saved herself, her crew, Zoro, and the entire Sabaody archipelago (initially, at least) by immediately restraining Zoro when he was about to kill a World Noble, which would have certainly caused nothing short of a Marine-issued Buster Call. However, she has been shown to cause time delays for her crew with her binge eating, even staying at a restaurant to eat for awhile while knowing that [[PersonOfMassDestruction Admiral Kizaru]] was coming.

She has eaten a Devil Fruit that allows her to change her own age as well as others. She uses it as a disguise on herself and makes her opponents either too young or too old to fight her. Interestingly, the clothes of the Marines she changes into children don't change to fit their smaller forms while her clothes do, implying that skintight {{Stripperific}} outfit is so her clothes always fit her when she transforms. Other than that, she has also demonstrated a powerful kick to Blackbeard's face that was enough to make him bleed, suggesting a good amount of physical strength (a common trait for the strongest of the One Piece world).

Bonney was hit especially hard by the events of Marineford, and unfortunately became caught up in their aftermath. However, two years later, she somehow got out of that hairy situation, but is now apparently on her own, fending for herself and trying to hide from everybody.

She has a bounty of 140,000,000 berries.
* ActionGirl: Even had the biggest bounty for a female pirate so far in the series before Charlette Smoothie was introduced.
* BigEater: The RedBaron title is not for nothing. She puts Luffy to shame.
* CryCute: For someone with such a rude personality, she is the only one of the Supernovas who breaks down in tears after [[spoiler:Whitebeard dies.]]
* DivingSave: Did this to Zoro. He dodged the World Noble's gunshot, but she saved him ''from attacking the World Noble''. Didn't matter, as Admiral Kizaru would arrive anyway, after Luffy later punched that same guy.
* FountainOfYouth: One of the abilities granted by her Devil Fruit.
* FromBadToWorse: [[spoiler:Blackbeard captured her and tried to hand her in to the Marines, but they afoul of Admiral Akainu and abandoned her to him, who showed an unusual pronounced interest in her.]]
* GangOfHats: Her crew has a Chef theme.
* HiddenDepths: Somehow, she is dangerous/important enough to [[spoiler:make Blackbeard hunt her down for a battleship and worry freaking ''Akainu'' when she escaped the government]].
* JabbaTableManners: Bonney basically shovels food down her throat and has a bad attitude to match her poor manners, much to Capone Bege's chagrin.
* TheLadette: Rude, aggressive, vulgar, and an exceptionally voracious eater.
* LivingMacGuffin: The World Government ''really'' want her captured for an unknown reason. Logically, her powers would be exceptionally appealing to [[ImmortalitySeeker the right sort of person...]]
* MagicPants: Surprisingly averted, considering the norm in this series. Her power doesn't affect clothing, so she wears skimpy clothing to make sure that it will always fit her.
* ManChild: Has a tendency to act like this. However, considering the nature of her powers, and the fact she could literally turn herself younger, [[TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody this may be a side-effect]], [[YoungerThanSheLooks or her simply acting her age]]. It should be noted that her true age was stated to be 24 post-timeskip, but even WordOfGod said it was an estimation, because of her abilities.
%%* NiceHat
* OvernightAgeUp: One of the abilities granted by her Devil Fruit.
* PirateGirl: Definitely not the first, but she looks more like a traditional female pirate.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When Admiral Kizaru comes knocking.
* ShaggyDogStory: She managed to escape the purge in Sabaody only to be [[spoiler:caught by Blackbeard and end up chained in front of Akainu, instead of entering the New World right away]]. Damn, that's terrible luck. [[spoiler:However, she has escaped once more, as revealed by Chapter 700]].
* ShapeshiftingExcludesClothing: Whether it's her own or her victims', her Devil Fruit powers don't affect clothes, unlike most other fruits. Hence her {{Stripperific}} outfit.
* {{Stripperific}}: [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in that because her ability doesn't provide MagicPants whenever she changes her age, she needs something that will be able to fit no matter what.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: The only female Supernova.
%%* ThisIsUnforgivable: To [[spoiler:Akainu and the Marines]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She seems to especially like pizza.
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[spoiler:Despite being arrested at the end of the Post War Arc, she somehow escaped or was released, as she was seen in two episodes during the Dressrosa Arc, both times eating pizza and reading a newspaper in some cold and snowy location.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: No information about what happened to the crew of the Bonney Pirates aside from their captain after Blackbeard came along is given, [[CurbstompBattle but it probably isn't good news.]]
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Justified as being part of her wardrobe from when she changes her age, since her powers don't allow MagicPants like the rest of the Devil Fruits.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Hot pink.

[[folder:Capone "Gang" Bege]]

-->"''You guys have already lost... in sheer military force!''"

->Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta (JP), Creator/KyleHebert (EN)

Coming from the West Blue, Capone Bege is one of the older Supernovas and he's the captain of the Firetank Pirates. Once a powerful Mafia boss in his native Blue, he became bored with his dominance of the underworld and decided to head out to sea to conquer and loot as many powerful pirate crews as he can. He's rather infamous for his sadism, high class attitude, and very short temper. However, his most prominent attribute is his direct approach to victory. Bege is a cunning and crafty opportunist who always goes after the head honchos and no one else, just to enjoy watching their organizations dissolve into chaos after he knocks off the boss.

He has eaten the Shiro Shiro no Mi (Castle-Castle Fruit); his body is a medieval-style human castle (including horses and mounted cannons and all) and his crew (and anyone) can shrink and "enter" him to mount surprise attacks on enemies, and he can interact with them through a manifestation of his conscious self. If that's not enough, he can assume the literal form of a castle human and beef himself up with impressive offense and defense, but if his castle body sustains any harm in that state, his consciousness feels it as well.

He also allied himself with the Big Mom Pirates during the {{Timeskip}}, serving as a "Rook" combatant in her ranks and marrying one of her daughters to seal his servitude, Charlotte Chiffon. Through her, he now has a son, Capone Pez, making him the only known Supernova so far who has his actual family alongside him as he operates his crew.

His first known bounty was 138,000,000 berries. His current bounty is 300,000,000 berries.
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler: After serving under Big Mom for an entire year, working his way up the ranks to be in a position to kill her, and coming up with a clever yet convoluted plan to pull it off, Bege's entire assassination plan goes up in smoke: Big Mom's scream inadvertently destroys his missile launchers, his escape plan is ruined, and his treachery has been exposed to the Big Mom Pirates. Bege himself lampshades this, although he comments that he feels a little better that at least Big Mom's castle was destroyed from it.]]
* ArcVillain: Of the Zou Arc. While Jack appears to be the main villain of said arc due to the horrific actions he took against the Minks, Bege is the primary antagonist to the Straw Hats themselves as he captured Sanji and left his own crewmate behind for dead, which serves as the main conflict for the next arc.
* ArchEnemy: Has become one to Pekoms. First, he shoots him in the back and abandons him on Zou, which lead to Pekoms swearing revenge. Then he captures Pekoms, chains him up and shoots him over a cliff into a shark-infested sea.
* AxCrazy: When he was young, he'd decapitate animals just to see them flail and die while laughing. When he grew older he advanced this grim hobby to entire organizations, killing their leaders to see them fall apart for fun. [[spoiler: He intends to do the same to Big Mom's crew by murdering Big Mom herself.]]
* BadassBoast:
** His [[DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu moment]] with [[spoiler:Katakuri]] mixes with RealityEnsues [[spoiler:as Bege points out that everyone has the same power to change the future as Katakuri does]].
** In Chapter 886, he makes a declaration to his infant son [[spoiler:after blasting the shit out of Oven for kidnapping Chiffon]]:
--> '''Capone Bege''': Take a good look, Pez. ''That's the way your Daddy lives!''
* BadassInANiceSuit: He's a Supernova with an established history, Devil Fruit power, sizable bounty, and powerful crew under his belt. Also wears a dapper suit, as per mafia norm.
* BadBoss: [[EyeScream Stabbed a underling in the eye once]] and smokes the little guys in his body out without care for any of them. However, [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] after the Timeskip. Having a family with Chiffon evidently softened him a bit and gave way for some CharacterDevelopment, as he now outwardly expresses care for his crew and is implied to have become a BenevolentBoss.
* BaseOnWheels: The Shiro Shiro no Mi makes Bege a literal fortress. It also allows him to turn his legs into tank treads thus essentially making him become this trope.
* BatmanGambit:
** Forcing Caesar to come out of hiding by threatening to shoot him with Seastone bullets ([[ILied which he didn't have in the first place]]), taking advantage of Caesar's cowardice in regards to people that can bypass his Logia abilities.
** [[spoiler: His ultimate purpose for allying with Big Mom turns out be a Batman Gambit; since she requires a blood connection and servitude to get in good with her, he married one of her daughters and worked his way up to become a "Rook" ranked combatant in her crew - knowing that she would eventually entrust him with watching over a tea party if he managed to get that rank. To that end, once his men are on guard duty at the party, he plans to have them slaughter her while she's distracted. It ultimately fails due to underestimating how much of a threat Big Mom is, namely that he didn't think to just poison her food]].
* BeardOfEvil: Grows a short, chin-hugging one during the timeskip. While being a married man humanized him, he still hadn't lost his ruthless edge.
* BigFancyCastle: On virtue of being a man of class and an actual castle, he ends up being this by default. His insides do look very luxurious as well. His "Big Father" technique checks off [[OneWingedAngel the 'big' part.]]
* BiggerOnTheInside: There's enough space inside him to house an entire army, including weapons and horses. He even has a fancy dining room decorated with portraits of himself.
* BodyguardBetrayal: [[spoiler:After he took on the role of "Rook" within Big Mom Pirates, he and his men were tasked with guarding the next Tea Party for Pudding's wedding. Unbeknownst to them (sans Pekoms, Brulee and Diesel), he was planning to assassinate Big Mom. He essentially tells [[{{Seers}} Katakuri]] [[DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu "Fuck you"]] when ordered to kill Luffy to avert a bad future Katakuri had foreseen... though ultimately, his assassination plan goes completely belly-up due to his own oversights and various other factors]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes through this after the timeskip; while he still hasn't lost his edge, marrying Chiffon and raising Pez gave him enough empathy to the point where he admits he does care for his crew, and is willing to protect them come hell or high water.
* ChessMotifs: Specifically, the Rook, which was the rank he had achieved under the Big Mom Pirates. Further invoked by his Devil Fruit, which turns him into a literal castle. The motif becomes even stronger when one realizes that Bege's overall bodyshape brings to mind this specific chess piece, implying an intentional design decision.
* CigarChomper: Always seen with one, unless when eating. Even his pirate flag, made in his likeliness, has a cigar in its mouth.
* ClippedWingAngel: His Big Father technique quickly turns into one; it's easily prevented from retaliating by Katakuri plugging its cannons with his mochi and Perospero immobilizing it with his candy, and any damage to it [[{{Synchronization}} is reflected on him]] (and Big Mom can do a lot).
* CombatPragmatist: Not above taking hostages and bluffing in order to get people to do what he wants. He's also smart enough to not punch outside of his weight class; when Kizaru and, much later, Cat Viper came a-knockin', he didn't even try to deal with them and instead ran for his life.
* CoolGuns: When he needs to fight by himself, he can whip out a classic little friend: the Tommy Gun.
* CulturedBadass: He seems to value and appreciate good manners, and wants his crew to follow his example. People like [[BigEater Jewelry]] [[JabbaTableManners Bonney]] get him mad real fast.
* DarkIsEvil: With his cool demeanor, cultured tastes, and brutal efficiency, Bege fits the image of a true mafia don... at least pre-timeskip. This seems to be subverted after he married Chiffon and had Pez, as he had grown kinder and more caring since then.
* DecapitatedArmy: Invoked; Bege is a big fan of killing the leader of a group and [[EvilPowerVacuum watching the rest flail about directionless]], a habit be picked up from literally decapitating animals to watch their bodies do the same.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: To [[spoiler:Charlotte Katakuri, a man with powerful foresight and a bounty higher than Jack's]]. When he orders Bege to kill Luffy [[spoiler:in a desperate attempt to avert the horrible future he had foreseen]], Bege responds with one of the biggest "Fuck you"s in the entire arc:
-->'''Capone Bege:''' All you can do is [[spoiler:''see'' a bit into the future.]] But it doesn't matter... [[spoiler:'''Cause everyone has the same power to change it!'']]
* DidntThinkThisThrough: [[spoiler:How his assassination plan came to ruin - while he ''did'' plan the whole thing, he didn't think to just poison Big Mom with tainted food since she loves eating more than anything, and he didn't think that Big Mom's scream would be made of Haki strong enough to melt the weapons Caesar Clown provided him]].
* DomainHolder: He has full control over everything inside his castle, since essentially it is his body.
* TheDon: Was even called "(God)father" by his men. Even the Italian dub gave him a thick, Sicilian accent.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:Jimbei attempts to broker a truce between him and the Straw Hats, as Bege is already in place to betray Big Mom (while he and his men posed as guards to the party) and they have similar goals. Both sides are wary, as the Straw Hats find his methods distasteful and Bege boasts that he might kill Luffy if he finds Luffy annoying, and with Luffy being the way he normally is...]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: By the moment he stabbed that poor underling in the eye, we knew Bege was, at the very least, an unpleasant person to deal with.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Is HappilyMarried to Big Mom's 22nd daughter, Chiffon, and has an infant son named Pez.
* EvilGenius: Bege's no scientist, but he's a really competent planner, liar and boss, while having several resources at his disposal.
* EvilVersusEvil: [[spoiler: When he reveals his plot to take down Big Mom. He does get assistance from the decidedly not-evil Straw Hats due to the circumstances, however.]]
* FantasticVoyagePlot: His Devil Fruit allows this of a sort as he can shrink people to enter his castle body.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Like any mafia boss, he might come off as sophisticated and levelheaded at first, but will quickly resort to cruelty and violence towards those who are uncooperative.
* {{Foil}}: To Big Mom, of all people.
** Bege wears nice, dark suits and smokes cigars to portray a threatening image of a mafia don, and even acts the part. However, he loves his family, and cares for crew (even if he won't always admit it). Big Mom's clothes are obnoxiously colorful and carries a pretense of reasonable diplomacy... but behind closed doors she's completely nuts, with a destructive, homicidal temper.
** Their Devil Fruits also contrast - Bege's Castle-Castle Fruit "gives" people a place to rest, hide, and eat (provided the guests don't piss him off with JabbaTableManners). Big Mom's Soul-Soul Fruit "takes" away the souls of people, which she uses to give random inanimate objects their sentience.
** Bege is a caring father and husband, who loves Chiffon despite her {{Gonk}}iness, and has been grooming his only child, Pez, into becoming the next don. Big Mom is a horrible parent and spouse, with many discarded husbands and her many children fearing her [[spoiler:with two of them dead (Opera, Moscato), and four of them "betraying" her in some fashion (Chiffon, Lola, Praline, Pudding)]].
** Their own CharacterDevelopment went in opposite directions; Bege started off as ruthless, bloodthirsty, and unreasonably harsh, but marrying Chiffon and having a son after the TimeSkip softened him, to where he admits he cares for his crew and ''will'' protect them, come hell or high water [[spoiler:such as blasting Oven for kidnapping Chiffon]]. Big Mom's monstrous, hedonistic, and fickle personality was the result of [[spoiler:having trusted parental figures see her as some kind of meal ticket and enable her worst traits while not even bothering to properly discipline her, resulting in the sweet but mentally ill Linlin developing very twisted morals]]. Having a lot of husbands and a lot of children didn't improve her situation; it just got worse, and created a very large DysfunctionalFamily.
* ForTheEvulz: Pretty much everything he does. In his younger days, he would cut off the heads of animals just to watch their bodies writhe, and applied the same principles to organizations; taking out mafia bosses and other underground big shots just to see the carnage that ensues as "the blood-soaked struggles for power", as Jimbei puts it.
* FlunkyBoss: Capone's powers work in conjunction with his small army of {{Mooks}}, who can hide inside his body and attack without warning.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: He hopes his son Pez will succeed him in the family business when he gets older, and has been grooming him for the position. To that end, he had been allowing Pez to witness violent events such as [[spoiler:Pekoms' shooting]] and [[spoiler:blasting Oven in the face with a cannon]], despite his son being a baby, as violence is in the nature of being a don.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When Jinbei talked about Bege's reputation, he mentioned anyone seeking revenge against Bege would meet an "Iron-Clad Fortress". [[spoiler:We later find out at the Tea Party he was describing "Big Father".]]
* GangOfHats: Both he and his crew have a mafia theme. It helps that his crew originated as actual mafia before Bege took to the seas out of boredom.
* GeniusLoci: His Devil Fruit essentially turns him into a castle, where people can go into and everything. Additionally, he can control and reshape every structure and piece of furniture within him. This includes making cannons pop out of his floors, turning the flames of candles held by candelabras and chandeliers into knives essentially making them pronged weapons of sorts, levitating the weapons within him that are normally used for display, making tablecloths wrap around people, and even making the very floor underneath people within him like quicksand. His "Big Father" technique makes him a more traditional example of this trope, as he ''literally'' becomes a giant walking fortress.
* GoodParents: Despite being a ruthless and sadistic mafia don, he's a loving father to his infant son, Pez. Much of their interactions has him making funny faces and speaking in baby-talk whenever Pez gets upset. And despite taking Pez to see violent events [[spoiler:like Pekoms' execution and Oven being cannon-blasted in the face]], it's merely out of good intentions to have the son succeed the father in mafia-running.
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: Nearly always seen with a big cigar in his mouth, besides that one time we saw him trying to eat at his debut.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Becomes one for the Sanji-retrieving Straw Hats during the Whole Cake Island Arc, alongside Jinbe, Pedro and Carrot.
* HairTriggerTemper: While anyone would be a bit grossed out by how gluttonous Bonney could be, there really isn't a need to consider killing her off, nor was there a reason to [[EyeScream stab an underling in the eye]] [[IDontPayYouToThink for pointing out the consequences for causing trouble near Marine turf]].
* HappilyMarried: To the 22nd daughter of the Charlotte Family, Chiffon. They even got a baby together, Capone Pez. Although marrying Chiffon was part of his plan [[spoiler:to infiltrate the ranks and assassinate Big Mom]], he really did fall in love with her and her kind influence shaped him into becoming a sort of BenevolentBoss. And if there's any doubt that their love isn't genuine, he quickly heads to Cacao Island to aid her after Chiffon goes with Sanji and Pudding to bake a new wedding cake to stop Big Mom. He arrives and sees Oven holding her hostage [[spoiler:with the intent to give her a traitor's execution]], with Chiffon pleading for her husband's crew to stay away so Oven wouldn't go after them, too. So Capone decides to take the third option by [[ISurrenderSuckers feigning surrender... only to blast Oven]] ''right in the face with a cannon'' once he has an good enough aim on him, saving his wife from certain death.
* HazyFeelTurn: He allies with Big Mom over the timeskip, although he wasn't exactly a nice guy to start with. [[spoiler:And then when he reveals his plan of assassinating Big Mom, he (reluctantly) allies with Luffy, who had a somewhat different goal.]]
* HeKnowsTooMuch: When a living castle door in Whole Cake Palace overhears his [[spoiler:talk about his assassination plan]], he gives the door a look, and Gotti proceeds to cut its face off, "killing" it.
-->'''Capone Bege''': Loose lips sink ships.
* IDontPayYouToThink: His response to an underling advising him not to cause trouble near Marine turf? [[EyeScream Fork him in the eye]].
* ILied: He threatened a hiding Caesar Clown with Seastone bullets, although he revealed that he never had any (what he does have are Seastone ''spears''). And Caesar fell for it.
* InTheBack: Shoots Pekoms in the back [[BeingPersonalIsntProfessional when the latter lets his personal feelings get in the way of their mission]].
* ItAmusedMe: Jinbe states that when he was younger, he would often kill the heads of rival organizations simply because he enjoyed watching the violent power struggles that followed.
* ISurrenderSuckers: Pulls this on Oven when he holds Chiffon hostage. Capone looks like he'll do it, only to shoot Oven in the face with a cannon.
* JawDrop: He sports a hilariously ''epic'' one when Luffy decides to [[spoiler:charge straight towards Big Mom alongside Brulee's clones, even vocally identifying himself among the crowd of decoys, potentially ruining their WeddingCrashers plan]]. Yes, Luffy did something so utterly stupid that he caused ''[[KnightOfCerebus Bege]]'' to JawDrop!
** And then comes an even ''bigger'' one when [[spoiler:he realizes the assassination plan has just gone belly up.]] That one not only is sustained, it is intermixed with cutesy eyes like the ones the awakened Zoans of Impel Down had because what just happened is so off-the-charts unbelievably bad he has suffered a [[VillainousBSOD mental kerfuffle]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Though [[AffablyEvil he has good manners in conversation]] (so long as something doesn't set him off) and a loving father/husband, he's a ruthless and violent pirate/mobster who thinks lowly of the concept of "friendship" and doesn't hesitate to harm his own allies (such as Pekoms).
* KnowWhenToFoldEm:
** He doesn't stick around for the chaos on Sabaody Archipelago, picking the route with the lightest resistance and leaving without fighting Kizaru or the Pacifistas.
** When Cat Viper confronted him about shooting Pekoms in the back, he didn't even bother trying to argue with him or state his case and instead opted to run like hell.
** According to Charlotte Brûlée, Bege was the only Supernova to invade Totto Land and actually see Big Mom. As soon as he did, he requested to become her subordinate on the spot. [[spoiler:This was all part of the plan, though, as he knew a head-on fight would end badly.]]
** In the past, part of his motivation of going to the seas as a pirate was for his own safety; he knows that despite his powerful defense, he would eventually be overwhelmed with all of the people who are gunning for him. Him joining Big Mom also serves as protection to it.
* KubrickStare: Given how his fedora tends to shadow his eyes, Bege often pulls his look when he wants to look threatening, or when he thinks he's got luck on his side.
* LongGame: His plan against [[spoiler:Big Mom required marrying into the family and rising through the ranks]], which given he has a son that he didn't before the timeskip means this has taken him at least a year to set up.
* LivingStructureMonster: His Devil Fruit essentially makes him a living building of sorts. His "Big Father" technique ''literally'' makes him [[OneWingedAngel a living fortress.]]
* MadeOfIron: His "Big Father" technique helps, but it is fairly impressive that Bege has taken several direct hits from Big Mom herself and is still alive and functional. Keep in-mind she was accidentally killing ''giant bears'' when she only six; Big Mom's strength will have only grown since then, so yeah, Bege is one guy with some serious durability. He also states that cannons don't faze him.
* TheMafia: He was the head of one of five enormous Mafia gangs that dominate the underworld in the West Blue before he eventually got bored and decided to be a pirate instead. He still operates his crew as if it were a Mafia gang though.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: He's always sharply dressed, and Bonney's JabbaTableManners disgust him.
* NeatFreak: He demands cleanliness and proper formal-wear from those who meet to discuss business with him and he was disgusted by Bonney's table manners to the point of wanting to kill her. This also extends to Vito.
* NiceHat: By this point, having a NiceHat seems to be almost a ''requirement'' to be a Supernova!
* NoMrBondIExpectYouToDine: The first thing he does to Sanji when the latter gets forced to enter his "castle" is to offer him food and a drink. This is while the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates are chained up and being held at gunpoint.
* NotSoStoic: He usually sports a cool demeanor, but he allows himself to be silly when it means caring for his infant son. And he can also be shaken out of his cool and composed state if something really bad comes along and ruins his plans. And if something ''really'' bad happens that means he's utterly boned, he'll be reduced to a boggle-eyed buffoon.
* NumberTwo: Vito, the Firetank Pirates advisor, serves as one for him.
* OhCrap:
** When he realized that Cat Viper was pissed off at him about shooting Pekoms.
** And again, when Commander Katakuri arrives for the tea party, already taking out an invitee who planned to get revenge on Big Mom. Katakuri can see into an immediate future, which Bege correctly assumes will put a big spanner into his plans for Big Mom.
** Experiences his biggest one yet when [[spoiler: Big Mom unexpectedly unleashes a blast of Haki that obliterates the poison warheads intended to kill her while she was in the middle of her VillainousBreakdown. Not only that, the big mirror that Caesar carries as their escape plan also gets cracked similarly. He and his crew could tell immediately that they were so ''very'' screwed.]]
* OneManArmy: Probably the single most literal example of this trope ''ever created,'' considering he's one man who ''contains'' an army. The man can mount a friggin' cavalry charge from his chest!
* OneWingedAngel: His "Big Father" ("Ein Grosser Vater") technique turns him into a giant walking castle armed to the teeth.
* PapaWolf: When Caesar Clown threatens to hurt Pez if he doesn't uphold his end of the bargain [[spoiler:for the assassination plan]], Bege starts getting noticeably angry, with a shadowed glare and a tooth-baring snarl.
* PermaStubble: To help reinforce the mafia don image.
* PetTheDog: He's shown to be a caring father and a loving husband - the classic redeeming feature for a classic mobster.
* PowersDoTheFighting: For the most part, Capone himself doesn't. Instead, he uses his castle body to let his {{Mooks}} perform sneak attacks. When faced with an actual fight, he runs if possible. As his OneWingedAngel technique shows, however, he can be dangerous if cornered.
* RemoteBody: When inside his own castle body via a manner somewhat similar to Robin's replication abilities, he can simultaneously move around inside and control his outer self.
* {{Sadist}}: According to Jimbei, he's the type of guy that likes to ''[[OffWithHisHead cut the heads off of]] [[KickTheDog animals]]'' just to watch their bodies flail around helplessly. In the actual storyline, we get to see this sadism in action when he shoots Pekoms off a cliff into shark-infested waters with a huge grin on his face.
* SadisticChoice: Bege's first time meeting his brother-in-law, Charlotte Oven, created a difficult situation: [[spoiler:Oven had taken Chiffon hostage and wants the Firetank Pirates to surrender. If Bege chose Option A (going after Oven to save his wife), he and his entire crew will be killed, which Chiffon begs them not to do. If Bege chose Option B (obeying Chiffon's request to leave her behind so he'll be saved from a traitor's execution), he and his crew would get out alive, but Bege would be without a wife and his son Pez without a mother. This being [[PragmaticVillainy Bege]], he [[TakeAThirdOption decides to pull a bluff]] and [[ISurrenderSuckers pretend to surrender]], only to shoot a cannonball at Oven's face once he was close, saving Chiffon]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When Admiral Kizaru comes knocking down the sky. Also when Cat Viper does the same.
* SealedArmyInACan: He is the can, as his Devil Fruit lets him become a human fortress.
* SharpDressedMan: Always seen wearing a suit and, when privately meeting with others, demands they do the same.
* SlasherSmile: He bears a particularly vicious one while firing his pistol into Pekoms and sending him over a cliff.
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler: He has no intention of staying under Big Mom; he's actually gunning for her head just to see her entire organization collapse and laugh at the carnage that would ensue. This was foreshadowed earlier: while he joined up Big Mom on the spot after attacking her territory, Pekoms was also seen telling him not to underestimate Big Mom before his apparent execution]].
* StoneWall: Defensively, the Castle-Castle Fruit is a top-notch ability. Not so much the case offensively, as Bege rarely tries to attack enemies himself (he depends on his crew to do that for him in the first place), and the few times he attempts to, he is easily thwarted.
* StraightForTheCommander: As a Mafia boss and a pirate, his ideology has always been to go straight for the leader, take them out, and then let the subordinates scramble in the chaos. [[spoiler:As of the Totto Land arc, he had been planning to gun for Big Mom, and at this point he's nearly succeeding thanks to the support of some very powerful allies.]]
* TheStrategist: Bege's strongest point is not raw strength or even his rather powerful Devil Fruit, but his excellent use of tactics coupled with great perception of enemy weaknesses.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: His son Pez looks almost just like him, ''down to the hat, cigar-shaped pacifier, and stubble''.
* SubmissiveBadass: On virtue of being Big Mom's subordinate. However, his loyalty doesn't extend to fellow crewmembers such as Pekoms. [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]], since he actually planned on killing her from the start]].
* {{Synchronization}}: [[spoiler:Because his fortresses are based off his Devil Fruit and therefore extensions of himself, directly damaging his fortresses will transfer to Bege in the form of severe bodily injuries as if he was being attacked himself]].
* TakeAThirdOption: What Bege ultimately does [[spoiler:to save Chiffon from being killed by Oven, her own brother. He doesn't want to risk the safety of his crew and his son by gunning after Oven, but he doesn't want to lose his wife either. So he pretends to surrender... and cannon-blasts the shit out of Oven once he was close enough]].
* TankGoodness: Somehow, he can turn his own legs into tank treads, not unlike Franky. This can even apply to ''his ship'', whenever he wants to travel by land.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: [[spoiler:The proposed alliance between Luffy and him to take down Big Mom is this; Luffy wants to at least punch Bege out for shooting Pekoms, Bege is wary about Luffy in general, and Caesar Clown is dragged into this mess against his will thanks to Bege getting his heart. Even if Jimbei is there to calm them down and make them focus to their shared goals, it's made clear that they ''hate'' each others' guts.]]
* TimeForPlanB: [[spoiler:When his plan for killing Big Mom failed and he and his group is cornered by Big Mom's crew (who are recovering thanks to Katakuri) and his escape route is "closed", he hurriedly [[OneWingedAngel turns into "Big Father"]] and tells his group to get inside him quickly. But even then, as his castle form is immobilized and Big Mom assaults him, he can't hold on for long, so [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere plans to retreat with everyone,]] with Germa 66 covering him.]]
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: His wife, Chiffon, towers over him.
* TookALevelInKindness: Compare Bege pre-timeskip, who wants to kill Jewelry Bonney for her atrocious manners and stabs a subordinates eye for talking out of turn... to Bege post-timeskip, who is happily married to his wife Chiffon and making goofy faces for his infant son.
* TrueCompanions: He admits that while he may not care of whoever's working with him, he still treasures his crew and family and would do anything but let them die.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: [[spoiler: For all of his careful planning to assassinate her as quickly and cleanly as possible, he ultimately ''still'' underestimated Big Mom, just like Pekoms said he would. He ''did not'' plan on her Haki simply being powerful enough to destroy his missiles and his escape route, leaving him and the entire alliance stuck in a death trap against the entirety of the Big Mom pirates.]]
* VictoryIsBoring: This is what drove him to become a pirate; a former land-based Mafia boss, he dominated the people and the Underworld of the West Blue before getting bored with the lack of challenge and deciding to head out to sea.
* WarForFunAndProfit: Played the trope straight to a tee in his Mafia days; he started wars with other mafias and various underworld factions just to kill their leaders, take their stuff, and watch their subordinates panic aimlessly for his amusement.
* WickedCultured:
** Enjoys gourmet cuisine and fine wine, and his personal meeting room appears quite fancy.
** Watching paintings is one of his hobbies, according to supplementary material.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Shoots down Pekoms when the latter decides to not take Sanji with them out of gratitude, which would have caused one of their missions to fail. He even says that Pekoms was now useless shortly after dispatching him.

->See his entry on his [[Characters/OnePiecePirateHunterRoronoaZoro separate character page]].

[[folder:"Mad Monk" Urouge]]

->Voiced by: Creator/TaitenKusunoki (JP), Major Attaway (EN)

Urouge is the oldest supernova and he has the smallest bounty of the group. He is a MightyGlacier who hails from a sky island, as you might have figured. He has a perpetual smile on his face which never goes away, even when he's seen showing fear. He has an ability that allows him to rapidly expand his muscles.

He has a bounty of 108,000,000 berries.
* BeardOfEvil: A notorious bearded pirate.
* CallBack: He is a Bilkan, meaning he is from the same place Eneru and his followers came from.
* GangOfHats: Both he and his crew have a monk theme.
* KavorkaMan: WordOfGod says one of Urouge's favorite hobbies is "love affairs", but given the [[UsefulNotes/RasputinTheMadMonk man he was based on]], it's not so surprising.
* LargeAndInCharge: He's the largest member of his crew, and he's the Captain.
* MightyGlacier: He's not the fastest guy around, but he packs quite a punch, and is very much tough as hell as well.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:During the time skip, he defeated one of Big Mom's Sweet Commanders. Alas, Charlotte Cracker defeated Urogue some time afterwords, but there's now only three of these commanders rather than four. He also succesfully escaped with his life while most would be kicked out in humiliation or killed.]].
* OneHundredAndEight: Worth 108,000,000. There are 108 Temptations in Buddhism.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:Urouge drops his grin when he sees Kaido coming near him.]]
* PerpetualSmiler: Even when he's sad. Except for that one time he was just confused by an island that was constantly spewing lightning. [[spoiler:[[OhCrap And when he realizes that Kaido is approaching he and his crew.]]]]
* SuperMode: His unknown Devil Fruit allows him to become incredibly muscular and gain the strength to knock a Pacifista around. It's subtly implied that the Devil Fruit allows him to convert the damage he takes into physical strength, but is unconfirmed.
* TelephonePolearm: WordOfGod says that is actually a [[BlatantLies ''pencil'']]. [[RuleOfFunny And he's looking for a suitable sharpener]].
* TookALevelInBadass: He went from being unable to defeat a single Pacifista during the events at Sabaody Archipelago to [[spoiler:taking down one of Big Mom's Four Sweet Commanders]] after the timeskip.
* WarriorMonk: It's in his RedBaron, if his appearance didn't give it away.
* WingedHumanoid: Comes with being from a sky island.
