-->''"What good is treasure if I'm all alone? I'd rather have nothing at all!"''

The eighteen/[[TimeSkip twenty]]-year-old navigator of the Straw Hats, Nami was initially introduced as a thief who detested pirates and stole from them. Her years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. Despite these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, [[OnlySaneWoman though they do get on her nerves from time to time]], and their journey would have been nigh impossible without her near-supernatural abilities to read the ocean currents and predict weather phenomena, leading some to wonder if she's actually a witch. She uses a weapon called the Clima-Tact, later upgraded to the Perfect Clima-Tact and currently the Sorcery Clima-Tact.

Her dream is to draw a map of the world, which she was unable to realize until Luffy managed to free her and her island from the tyrannical rule of the [[FishPeople Fishman]] pirate Arlong. She owes a great deal to the others and especially Luffy for this, and is often the only member of the crew other than Zoro to personally confront or remind him of the deep, gut-wrenching choices that he must face.

Her first bounty was 16,000,000 Berries. Her current bounty is 66,000,000 berries.
-----

* AccidentalTickleTorture: In the English dub only, she screams "that tickles!" when Sanji hugs her at the conclusion of the Luffy's duel with Foxy.
* ActionGirl: [[ActionSurvivor Not at first]], but starts growing into the role after being given her Clima Tact. After the TimeSkip, she's finally a [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]] like the rest of the crew.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair is straight-up orange in the manga, but veers toward reddish-orange in the anime. The Oda-directed ''Strong World'' and ''Film Z'' notably make it purely orange, similar to the way the former lightened Robin's skin before she became permanently light-skinned post-TimeSkip.
* AlmightyJanitor: While technically her position is only the navigator, her word is law on all matters related to sailing, finance and the day-to-day management of resources, thus making her the unofficial quartermaster. At this point, even ''she's'' quite a bit stronger than her mere (now rightfully updated) 16,000,000 bounty would imply thanks to the massive and dangerous upgrades she made to her Clima Tact.
* AntiHero: Starts off as not willing to kill, but fine with putting pirates in situations where they are certain to die due to her past.
* ArmorPiercingSlap:
** PlayedForLaughs. With just slaps, she's one of the few characters able to render Luffy a bruised and bloody mess. Creator/EiichiroOda says that it's because her blows are "emotionally and spiritually charged".
** It was tragically played seriously when she slaps [[spoiler:Sanji after he gives Luffy a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown during the former's BreakHisHeartToSaveHim gambit. It was probably the first time she actually gave up on a crewmate for real]]. Thankfully, they do make up later though once she learns his motives.
* ArtEvolution:
** In the anime, her eyes have been drawn lighter since the TimeSkip, going from dark brown to near orange. Furthermore, her eyes were originally drawn uniformly brown, with the irises only visible when she was showing strong emotion. Now, the irises are visible at all times (though the manga still generally follows the pre-TimeSkip design of "uniform brown unless emotional").
** Like all of the women from early One Piece (such as Tashigi or Vivi), Nami became curvier and significantly more well-endowed over time as Oda's art style evolved.
* AuthorAppeal: Oda is HappilyMarried to Chiaki Inaba, the actress who played her in the ''Jump Festa'' stage performances. Oda thinks his wife is incredibly sexy (and to be fair, she ''is'' very pretty), and as a kind of tribute to her, altered Nami's design so when she plays Nami it would show off more...and because [[CovertPervert he really enjoys seeing his wife in the more revealing outfits]].
* BadassAdorable: She's a very cute young lady, and she knows it, but she's also far from helpless. She even sometimes lampshades it.
* BadassBookworm: Nami is a highly skilled navigator as well as a talented cartographer, to the point where Arlong considered her skills on par with the fishmen "superiority" since they were superior to any fishman's. When Luffy destroys her room at Arlong Park, maps of both bathymetric and geographic nature were seen, indicating Nami has a wide variety of cartographic skills. She is capable of formulating advanced equations in mere minutes to predict a precise course of action, although she usually needs to write the equations down on a physical medium when formulating them. She has the innate ability to sense changes in the weather, and can even predict the appearance of supposedly unpredictable cyclones in the Grand Line, even when running a high fever. The movie Strong World also shows that she performs better than a crew of scientists with some advanced equipment in predicting the weather.
* BadassNormal: She has no Devil Fruit powers, but the Clima-Tact more than makes up for it.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: Averted. The front of her breast is clearly visible as she shows [[{{Sideboob}} sideboob]] in chapter 852, while it's hard to make out (most likely on purpose due to One Piece being a {{Shonen Jump}} manga), there is a line that forms part of a nipple. The rest can't be seen part because she's filthy, and partly due to the art style
* BareYourMidriff: A few of her outfits sport this, but her first timeskip design is the most evident case of this. Zou is actually the first post-TimeSkip arc in which she's not baring it, and she started the arc with a midriff-baring outfit before exchanging clothes with Wanda.
* BathingBeauty: Gets a few of these scenes occasionally.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Double-subverted. The serious damage she receives during her more intense fights does show, but as soon as the fights are over, in any of the more minor battles, and in the long run overall, her skin is absolutely flawless.
** The most ridiculous is probably the case of her shoulder; she ''stabbed'' it repeatedly during her epic FreakOut at Arlong Park, and it left a very large and visible scar (which you can see [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/File:Nami_Scar.png here]], above the [[FanService fan service]]) for the remainder of the arc. As soon as the arc was over? She got a new tattoo and her scar was nowhere to be seen. But deep stab-wound scars like that, in real life, are particularly nasty and never quite heal so completely.
*** In the manga, for some time the scar was still visible a bit under her new tatto the times she wore sleeveless shirts, but by the Whisky Peak arc it completely disappeared. Maybe Oda thought it was too much of a hassle to draw.
** Averted as far as [[WildTake Wild Takes]] go: she has the most out of anyone, ''and'' the goofiest. Being the OnlySaneWoman will do that to you.
* BecomingTheMask: Initially, she had only intended to use Luffy for all he was worth before leaving. But the longer she stayed with them, the more she grew to like being part of the Straw Hats (especially compared to her experiences with Arlong). Eventually, she betrayed them and cheerfully took off with Going Merry, but once she was on her own, she [[HeroicBSOD broke down and cried]]. When the Straw Hats eventually follow her, she is visibly upset while trying to keep them out of a fight she thought they couldn't win. Like with Robin later on, Luffy continues to think of Nami as part of his crew and confronts Arlong for her sake. The final nail in this was when Luffy told Nami to watch [[NiceHat his signature straw hat]], simultaneously a sign of his trust in her and a sign he was [[LetsGetDangerous about to kick some serious butt]]. By this time she is too shaken with emotion to even move, ultimately coming to the realization she ''wants'' to be a Straw Hat, leading to her ultimate decision to leave with them after Luffy defeats Arlong.
* BerserkButton: She has seven. Simply put, ''[[FieryRedhead don't try to piss Nami off]]''.
** Do not spend money without consulting her first.
** Do not steal anything from her, especially if she stole it first.
** Don't call her a witch.
** Don't insult her good looks.
** Never hurt her tangerine trees (a button she got from [[ParentalSubstitute Bell-mère]]).
** Don't argue with her.
** Hurting kids is a quick way to get on Nami's permanent shit list.
* BlackMagicianGirl: Nami has all the trimmings of this due to her Clima-Tact: she's the weakest of the crew in a physical fight, but she's able to control weather effects as though they're magic spells being cast from a staff (with lightning being her specialty, although she's more than proficient with heat, wind, cold, water, sea clouds, and illusory techniques as well). Some of her opponents have even referred to her as a witch in response to her fighting style.
* BlowYouAway: Since she can control the weather with her Clima-Tact, she can use this to attack. It's how she defeated Miss Doublefinger.
* BorrowedCatchPhrase: When she claims to be a crossdressing man to get Zombie!Lola off her case, she uses Bon Clay's "Not joking around!"
* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: A platonic example that goes both ways.
** In the Arlong Park arc, Nami tries to make the Straw Hats leave Cocoyashi since she's so close to paying off her debt to Arlong and buying back her town's freedom, and she doesn't want the Straw Hats to get hurt. After she finds out Arlong broke his promise [[KickTheDog and confiscated her money]], she goes through a ''heartbreaking'' HeroicBSOD, and as a last resort she screams at Luffy to go away and leave her and her town alone. What follows is a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown as the Straw Hats completely thrash the Arlong Pirates.
** In the Whole Cake Island arc, both she and Luffy were subjected to one by Sanji [[spoiler:who was trying to invoke this gambit to keep his friends from being killed by the Vinsmokes and Big Mom's crew, by rejecting them and telling them he "accepts" his royal Vinsmoke heritage]]. While it worked on Nami [[spoiler:who gives him an ArmorPiercingSlap]], Luffy isn't fooled at all [[spoiler:and [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness takes a vow of fasting]] until Sanji frees himself and returns to his crew again]].
* BrickJoke: Zoro still owes her money for that time he borrowed some from her in Loguetown to buy some new katana.
* BrokenBird: She is shown to have been spectacularly broken as a little girl in the Arlong arc (due to the brutal murder of her adoptive mother and her years in Arlong's crew). That was until Luffy defeated Arlong that she was no longer broken. However, while she warmed up to pirates thanks to the Straw Hats saving her and her town from captivity, it took her a while to feel she could start trusting Fishmen in general after the devilish impression she got from the Arlong Pirates, which Hatchan found out the hard way.
* BrokenTears: After Arlong [[KickTheDog decided to go back on his word and send corrupt Marines to confiscate the money Nami stole]], Nami completely breaks down, sobbing as she stabs at the shoulder tattoo Arlong gave her and screaming at Luffy to leave her and Cocoyashi behind to no avail. [[ThisIsUnforgivable Cue Luffy and the Straw Hats]] [[CurbStompBattle eating a can of whoop-ass]] [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown and bulldozing Arlong's crew]].
* ButtMonkey: One of the rare female versions and one of the biggest '''''[[UpToEleven ever.]]''''' She's more so known as [[FieryRedhead that one chick who blows up at her crew mates idiocy]], and [[{{Greed}} a greedy pirate girl]], but whenever something goes wrong, ([[PlayedForLaughs which is all the damn time,]]) she'd be no better than ''[[CowardlyLion Usopp]]''. Best exemplified in the [[HalloweenEpisode Thriller Bark Arc]], where after Enies Lobby is all said and done, you would think that nothing could faze her. [[{{Bathos}} Cue the ghosts and zombies.]]
** As of the TimeSkip, this seems to be [[InvertedTrope flipped:]] When her doppelgänger pointed a gun at her ''head,'' she didn't even flinch. Yes, Nami the [[{{Greed}} greedy]] [[FieryRedHead red head]], pulled a [[TheStoic Stoic.]] That goes thrown right out the window as soon as Luffy starts doing his usual antics because she doesn't have to put on a brave face anymore (and Nami didn't fear Chocolat one bit for pretending to be her and was actually rather annoyed), but Nami can still stare daggers when the moment counts.
* CallBack: Nami gets déjà vu when she and Luffy [[spoiler:manage to get out of Big Mom's book prison by burning it, which burns them and their clothes]]. It's a call back to Little Garden, where the same happened to get out of Mr. 3's Candle Set.
* CantCatchUp: Usopp somewhat fixes this problem for her. She's not quite as strong as her crewmates, but she's got a respectable record, taking out Miss Doublefinger from Baroque Works and Kalifa from [=CP9=].
** When Nami and Sanji get body-swapped in Punk Hazard, Sanji worries about using hers to perform his Black Leg techniques because her body isn't toned for physical combat. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] when it turns out that she ''is'' strong enough to use several of the techniques though.
* CatFight: Gets into these all the time, but her fight with Kalifa in which Nami herself is scantily clad and getting rubbed all over [[FanService by the just-as-buxom, fishnet-fond Kalifa using her]] [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum "Slippery wet soap powers"]] takes the cake.
* CelibateHeroine: Her reason to not want to marry Absalom is (other than he's a creepy pervert) that she is way too young to get married and would rather go on adventures for the time being. Also, while she regularly flirts with others to get what she wants, she is one of the three crew members (along with Luffy and Zoro) to never show unambiguous attraction to anyone.
* CerebusRetcon: Initially played straight with Nami's [[MoneyFetish greed]] and distrust of pirates. In the Arlong Park Arc, we find out her hometown was taken over by pirates and she struck a deal with the leader to buy back the town from him if she gathered enough money. Ultimately subverted, when this arc was over, Nami is still obsessed with money and treasure. Even in the flashback to Nami's past, she was stealing things before Arlong showed up. It likely has more to do with her poor background.
* CharacterDevelopment: After the two year timeskip, she does not over-react, scold, or hit the crew as often for their rash actions anymore, like when she decides to take part in activities such as [[spoiler:demanding money when the crew holds Ryugu Kingdom "hostage".]] In fact she now appears quite calm in the most daunting of situations, most notably when Fake Nami held a gun to her head, implying she has become fairly confident in her abilities.
* CharacterTics: Playfully sticking her tongue out at someone she's robbed or just somehow screwed over. It also shows up fairly often in official artwork and merchandise.
* ChildProdigy: Nami was able to draw impressive maps by the time she was only ''ten''.
* ClassyCatBurglar: Nami definitely qualifies -- First, she is a master thief, being able to steal items off of her victims without them noticing. Second, her [[AnimalMotifs animal motif]] is a cat, the animal most associated with being sneaky like a thief. And thirdly, her main nickname is ''"Cat Burglar"'' Nami.
* CombatStilettos: She's most often seen wearing high-heeled sandals, though she doesn't fight physically.
* ConfusionFu: One of the Clima-tact's abilities is to create several fake Nami illusions. It also makes her look like any one of them, meaning it's not a good idea to rely on the fact that they all look different from her.
* TheConsigliere: While all the Straw Hats can fill this role for the very [[IdiotHero dense]] Luffy, Nami is the one who most often directs him in the right direction with her advice and insight (especially in regards to navigation. Whether or not he actually follows that advice is really up to his mood, however, which is why Nami tries to avoid letting him in on making decisions that would cause the crew problems.)
* CoolSword: One of her new techniques is to create a [[spoiler:wind sword]].
* CowardlyLion: Less than Chopper and Usopp, but she does not have the fear immunity that the rest of the crew have. This is justified out of pragmatism than anything else, since she is completely untrained in physical combat. After the TimeSkip, this is now no longer the case, [[spoiler:as noted when her doppelgänger pointed a gun at her ''head'', and]] she didn't even ''flinch.'' She's been going strong ever since.
** She's physically stronger than she gives herself credit for too. While her stamina is low, Sanji had no problems knocking out several of Caesar's thugs and a large shark with his usual kicks while stuck in Nami's body from a FreakyFridayFlip.
* CryCute: Despite the quite massive JerkassFacade she puts on for the first half of the Arlong arc, it's next to impossible not to gain sympathy with her when she breaks down crying due to Arlong's betrayal. She also has several moments in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc, especially regarding Usopp.
* CynicismCatalyst: The death of Bell-mère at the hands of Arlong caused Nami to hate pirates with a passion. She ultimately gets over it after Luffy defeats Arlong.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: She wears short skirts two times in canon. The first was [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/6/6e/W7.jpg in the Water 7 arc]], when she didn't fight at all. The second was [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/a/a6/Nami_PerfectClimaTact.JPG in the Enies Lobby arc]], where she more than proved her worth as an ActionGirl. Her battle outfit in ''Film Z'' has one as well, though in that case it's partially justified: since she was turned into a kid, her outfit is child-sized, and thus looked a lot shorter when she returned to normal.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Nami had one of the worst upbringings among her crew. Her parents were killed in a war when she was a baby, and she and another girl, Nojiko, were ''de facto'' adopted by Bell-mère, a wild child-turned-Marine-turned-tangerine farmer, who brought them home. When Nami was 10, Bell-mère was murdered by Arlong when she used all the money she had to pay for the lives of her children instead of herself (she didn't even have to, since they weren't registered). She was then conscripted into Arlong's pirates for her mapmaking skills, then dicked around for a 100-million-beri bounty on the town's freedom that Arlong never intended to allow her to pay.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The special "Episode of Nami" TV Special that aired between episodes 560 and 561. A retelling of the Arlong Park Arc. Actually post TimeSkip Nami reminiscing while on their way to Fishman Island.
* DeadpanSnarker: In the Funimation dub. Luci Christian clearly enjoys making Nami as wry as possible.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Nami ends up siding with her fellow villagers to fight to the death towards the end of the Arlong arc.
* DefrostingIceQueen: At first, she claims to only want to work with the crew to accomplish her goals, and maintains that for a little while before she eventually betrays them to steal their money. But by that time, she had grown so comfortable with them that she didn't want to leave; even her own sister remarked that it had been a long time since she had seen Nami so emotional.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: According to [[WordOfGod Oda]], she hates orangeades (chocolate-coated oranges) and prefers the actual fruit.
* DopeSlap: Or rather, "Dope Punch". She applied it liberally whenever her crewmates (usually [[IdiotHero Luffy]]) act very stupid. She mellows out on it after the TimeSkip, though.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She beats her crewmates up very often, but never do said crewmates respond in kind. She does lessen on the beatings after the TimeSkip, though.
* DudeMagnet: Many men who are attracted to her.
** [[WordOfGod Oda]] commented that she (and Robin) are considered very beautiful women InUniverse.
** [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji]] constantly flirts with her.
** [[InvisibleJerkass Absalom]] made ''creepy'' advances on her and attempted to ''marry'' her via force.
** [[spoiler:Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji]], who are [[spoiler:Sanji's]] brothers, are smitten with Nami when they first meet her.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the manga, she first appears in chapter 8. In the anime, however, she makes an appearance in the very first episode, before Luffy himself.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: When she stabbed herself in the arm to gouge out her old tattoo, it scarred up her flesh pretty badly. The new tattoo she got was not supposed to cover it up, as seen in a depiction of her [[FuroScene in a bath]] during the novelization of the Loguetown Arc. However, Oda must have decided that it looked unattractive for Nami to have a visible scar, so he made it so that her new tattoo really did cover it up completely.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: She asked Nojiko to keep her efforts to buy her village back from Arlong a secret, even after Genzo had her banished from the village for joining Arlong Pirates, knowing that the villagers struggled to pay the tribute. It turns out that Genzo, unwilling to believe she'd join the pirates willingly, got Nojiko to tell him the truth, but decided to keep it a secret from Nami so she could run away if she was unable to go on.
* EveryoneHasStandards: As greedy as she is, she's willing to give up treasure for the sake of her friends, such as giving some of Thriller Bark's treasure to her friend Lola as a gift, or being willing to spend all the treasure to buy Caimie and set her free (unfortunately, she gets preemptively outbid).
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She grows her hair out during the TimeSkip.
* FanServicePack: Over the course of a few hundred chapters/episodes, Nami's physique changed greatly. Her breasts have gradually increased in size, from modest B's to full-blown F's. It's enough to make you think that the story hasn't been in ComicBookTime, but apparently she's just prone to growth spurts. At the ages of 18 and 20. Every other week of her life. And the [[PerverseSexualLust fans]] [[RuleThirtyFour rejoiced]].
** Well, technically G-cup to I-cup to J-cup, according to Eiichiro Oda, but the same logic applies. (note that Japanese bra cup sizes scale differently than American ones; translated, her breast size is still absurd, but not impossible)
** And keep in mind, this is the same universe where pathetic-looking runts (Coby) turn into outright [[{{Bishonen}} bishonens]] in less than a year (albeit with training), and where ordinary-sized children grow into 22-foot-tall monstrosities (Moriah). And both are human.
** There is also her upbringing to take into account. Under Bell-mère, her life was PerpetualPoverty, with a constant struggle to get enough to eat, books on cartography being a ''luxury''. For the eight years in Arlong's captivity, she was not fed ''at all,'' and she had to steal food from other pirates as well as valuables, with valuables taking a higher priority. Once she became a pupil of the weather mages, her nutritional needs were much better met, allowing her to realistically grow a larger bust. In addition, while with the Straw Hats Sanji is able to feed her far better than she had been before, hence her growth in the Grand Line.
%%* FauxActionGirl: At least, in early chapters.
* FieryRedhead: One of the more [[{{Tsundere}} emotional]] members of the crew. "True to her looks, she's so bold!"
* FireIceLightning: The [[WeatherControlMachine Clima-Tact's]] most basic function is to create three types of air bubbles named the Heat Ball, Cool Ball, and Thunder Ball. It used to be a slight subversion in that with the first version of the Clima-Tact, the Heat and Cool Balls were useless as attacks, and tended to be used for weather manipulation only. Once it got upgraded, the Heat and Cool Balls became strong enough to inflict damage to enemies (albeit relatively minor damage) in their base form.
* FlowerMotifs: According to Yuriko Yamaguchi (Robin's voice actress), Nami's flower is the sunflower, which are Chinese symbols of vitality and intelligence. She is a beautiful woman and, as stated by Oda, one of few people who are the most intelligent in ''One Piece'' (the other being Benn Beckam, Shank's First Mate).
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The rash, thieving Foolish to Nojiko's level-headed, straight-lace Responsible. To top it off, [[RedOniBlueOni Nami has red-orange hair while Nojiko has blue hair]].
* ForcedToWatch: She and Nojiko are forced to watch Arlong kill Bell-mère before their eyes.
* FormFittingWardrobe: She wears tight clothes every now and then, but mostly in the anime, which likes to exaggerate the original designs. Take [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/File:Nami%27s_Zou_Departure_Outfit.png this polo shirt]], for example.
* FreudianExcuse: Her greed and kleptomaniac tendencies started wit her living in poverty, even though she and her adoptive sister Nojiko were raised well by Bell-mère. Her hatred of pirates started when Arlong killed Bell-mère in front of her, though she got over it when Luffy and the Straw Hats defeated the Arlong Pirates and freed her hometown.
* {{Gainaxing}}: In the 7th movie, sometimes they bounce wildly when she moves very little.
** It's also the case in the 12th movie. Though you could argue this is compensating for the fact that she spends most of the movie as a kid.
* {{Greed}}: One of her main traits. If there's money to be made, count her in!
* GuileHero: "Heroine" in her case. To compensate for her lack of Devil Fruit powers (Robin, Brook, Chopper), [[{{Cyborg}} technological enhancements]] (Franky), and [[LightningBruiser monstrous physical/Haki skills]] (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji), her usual approach is the tactical one; when she first meets Luffy, she calls him [[HilariousInHindsight "Boss"]] to [[LetsYouAndHimFight get the guys chasing her off her tail]]. In the Totto Land arc, she manages to defeat [[BadBoss Charlotte Cracker]] this way - [[spoiler:using her Clima-Tact to soften up his Biscuit Soldiers so Luffy can eat through Cracker's defenses and gain a more powerful form]]
* HappilyAdopted: After losing their parents in a war, she and her non-blood sister Nojiko were taken in and raised by Bell-mère, who was a good mother to them both. [[CynicismCatalyst Then Arlong had to kill her in front of her daughters]]...
* HeroicBSOD: Two:
** As a child, she goes into a brief one when Arlong murders Bell-mère.
** In the Arlong arc, Nami goes into a major one when Arlong steals her fortune to buy her village's freedom and turns on her. She collapses in front of Luffy and starts crying BrokenTears, stabbing at the shoulder where Arlong tattooed her and screaming at Luffy for his crew to leave her and her town alone. She seemed intent on giving up on escaping pirate captivity altogether but Luffy snaps her out of it.
* HotWitch: Given her weather control capabilities and seductive nature, Nami's often called a witch, which is her BerserkButton.
* HowDoIShotWeb: When she first got her Clima-tact, she had no idea what it would do, and spent some time doing party tricks built into it by Usopp.
* HypocriticalHumor:
** Nami doesn't trust Robin when she first joins, and calls Luffy, Chopper, and Sanji idiots for being easily swayed by Robin to allow her to join up despite her history with Crocodile. She then goes to tell Robin that she herself won't be as easily swayed as she doesn't trust her. However, as soon as Robin casually offers up a bag of gems, Nami does a complete 180 and gets easily swayed. She even called her [[CoolBigSis "Sis"]].
** Nami likes to charge her crewmates for ridiculous reasons, but when one of them tries to do the same to her, she runs off.
* IconicOutfit: 3 of them; Her very first (the white shirt and orange skirt), her Enies Lobby outfit (the [[FanService infamous]] cuttoff brown blouse and blue skirt) and her first TimeSkip outfit, the bikini top and jeans. She's also always seen wearing a Log Pose on her wrist like a watch.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Minor example with Chopper. Perhaps a combination of his young age and not being human, she doesn't seem to have any qualms with him being around while she's bathing. During her shower after the crew leave Fishman Island, she happily invites Choper to join her before zapping Sanji and Brook for peeking. In the 17th opening, Luffy, Usopp and Chopper chase a golden beetle into the bathroom where Nami is showering. The former two get beaten up and yelled at while Chopper leaves unscathed.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: While Eiichiro Oda did state there will not be any romance in the series, it's worth noting that the baby that Luffy is holding (in a, granted non-canon, page) that represent's Oda's daughter looks like Nami.
* ImpossibleHourglassFigure: Had one as early as the Alabasta arc, but it's much more defined after the TimeSkip.
* JerkassFacade: Acted like this during the Arlong arc to try to prevent the Straw Hats from interfering in her business with Arlong, but it came [[TearJerker crumbling down]] along with her attempts to resolve the situation herself. Luffy doesn't take what Arlong did to her very well at all.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Emphasizing the "Jerk", at first. She can be selfish, manipulating [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and rude]], but there's no doubt she cares about her friends. She gradually [[TookALevelInKindness outgrows this behavior]] [[CharacterDevelopment over the course]] of the series. By the time the TimeSkip rolls around, she rarely acts like a jerk anymore (towards her friends, at least) unless they're asking for it.
* TheLadette: She skirts the edge of this trope. She's very feminine in her dress, cute in her mannerisms (when she wants something) and knows how to manipulate men (Sanji, not that that takes much) with her looks. On the other hand, she can out-drink Zoro, who is a bit of an alcoholic, drops the sweet talk when she isn't trying to scam you out of your money going for insults instead, and shows no fear playing hardball with men much stronger than her (even if she's just doing the negotiations, and intends to step back and let the stronger crew members do the actual beating). Of all the pirates, she probably come the closest to "raping pillaging and stealing." Zoro often comments that Sanji's attentions to her (and Robin, but whatever) are even more pathetic taking into account that Nami is more of a man than the cook himself. Even if she does like to look pretty.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAkJBs7il2U Nami Eyecatcher.]]
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Usually the light to Robin's dark. Can be zigzagged though, as while Nami is more bubbly and girly than Robin, she is much less [[ProperLady ladylike]], and she even has her moments where she is cold and aloof while Robin shows curiosity and childish imagination.
* LittleMissBadass: In the twelfth movie, after [[FountainOfYouth she was temporarily turned into a kid]] by Ain. She was also this when she actually was a kid; she started tricking and stealing from pirates at merely 10 years old.
* LittleMissConArtist: She takes advantage of that to trick some Marine soldiers into giving her info about Z.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Post-TimeSkip, she now Has RapunzelHair and is still as girly as ever.
* LovableRogue: While not a villain, Nami is known for being a thief, but she's still a lovable person.
* MagicStaff: Her Clima-Tact, her main weapon. [[WeatherControlMachine It even creates small-scale weather effects]].
* MamaBear: When faced with the imprisoned children of Punk Hazard begging to be taken back to their families, the rest of the crew (Sanji in particular) remain indifferent to their plight (though Chopper and Franky did want to go back too, they considered it too reckless). Nami however, is the ''first'' to take a stand for them, and her fervor in protecting Caesar Clown's young victims eventually inspires and awakens the dormant conscience of her friends. She's also this to her friends. Considering her [[MissingMom backstory]], it's very understandable.
-->'''Sanji:''' Hey, what the hell do you mean, Nami? They're not our problem! We're not Samaritans who go around saving people!\\
'''Nami:''' I know we're not! But when little kids are begging and crying for you to help them, you CAN'T just leave them and do nothing!
* MeaningfulName: Her name means "wave", and she is, after all, a navigator on a ship...
* MarsAndVenusGenderContrast: Nami proves to be an archetypal character for this trope. As the series unfolds, it's clear Nami simply doesn't get men's way of thinking, whatever it is values, attitudes, behaviors, codes, intentions, decisions or actions. Specifically, she doesn't understand the tacit communication between Luffy and Zoro (as seen in Buggy arc), is the only character who hates to be in a Wanted poster (in contrast with general cheerfulness male characters react to publications and updates of those posters) and her opinions and advices are usually disregarded in topics like adventures, honor or discipline and respect, who are important for men (like her permission for Luffy and Zoro to fight Bellamy in Jaya arc, her attempt to ruin Luffy's adventure in Skypiea and her refusal to have a campfire in Upper Yard, the whole Usopp affair in Water 7, or the "Monster Trio" accepting or supporting the "Davy Back Fight" challenge against the Fox Pirates). Even after the {{Time Skip}}, that situation doesn't change at all, as seen in [[spoiler: Punk Hazard arc]] or the [[spoiler: Whole Cake Island arc, where Nami decided to cut bonds with Sanji, only to see how Luffy, unlike her, shows totally loyal with him, overriding Nami decision in the process]].
* {{Meganekko}}: Sometimes when she's at work.
* MetaGal: Spends a lot of her early appearances reacting to Luffy and Zoro's inhuman abilities. Actually, almost everyone falls into this role when introduced to the wackiness of the Straw Hat Crew, but the more human members (like Nami) keep it up longer. Like most of the other characters, she now reacts to how strange the people that the Straw Hats meet are instead.
* MissingMom: [[ParentalSubstitute Bellemere]] died saving her and her adoptive sister by being shot by Arlong himself. [[ForcedtoWatch Nami saw the whole thing]]. Her birth mom, on the other hand, is likely a casualty of war.
* MoneyFetish: She's such a classic case that she's the current image for that page. See [[MrViceGuy Ms. Vice Girl]] below.
* MsFanservice: Most conventional in the world, as she's… stacked, [[{{Gainaxing}} bouncy]], [[TheTease flirtatious]], and [[BareYourMidriff rarely covers her stomach]]. After the time skip we have… [[WalkingSwimsuitScene bikini top]], low-riding pants that expose her hips and upper crotch-lines, high heels, and [[LongHairIsFeminine much longer and free-flowing hair]]. Taken up to eleven in the "Glorious Island" movie tie-in; most of the focus is on Nami bouncing around in a tiny bikini, with her breasts larger than ever before. Her wardrobe seems to shrink for each story arc as she's down to the bikini top and [[WhoWearsShortShorts short shorts]] in the Dressrosa storyline.
* MsViceGirl: She is obsessed with money and often cons other characters (including her own crewmates) out of their hard-earned cash. Despite this, her good qualities still outweigh her greed. In the Arlong Park arc, it's shown exactly why she's so fixated on getting rich. The habit doesn't exactly die after the fact, but she slowly gets better about it, at least.
* MundaneUtility: Weather control makes a great weapon. It also makes showering anywhere a lot easier.
* TheNavigator: She's good at drawing maps, and has an innate gift to detect extremely subtle changes in the weather that foreshadow storms, making her a very valuable navigator.
* NeverGetsDrunk: Nami can hold her liquor just fine. She out-drinks fifteen people and goes on like it was nothing. She may even be better than Zoro, as she actually outdrank more than him, and although she had to fake passing out to trick her enemies' attention in Whiskey Peak, she said she could go on even longer. She actually does get a little tipsy in the Fishman Island arc, but not outright drunk.
* NiceGirl: Post-timeskip, while still prone to comedic outbursts, Nami is more kinder; See TookALevelInKindness below.
* NiceShoes: As a thief, she went with practical and rather plain boots, but when she put that life behind her, she traded them for a preference toward wearing glamorous-looking high-heeled sandals, a holdover from her days of wearing sandals in a tropical environment growing up, along with her adoptive mother and sister and practically the rest of the islanders. However, she'll mix it up every so often with some other fancy footwear, including boots.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Gets her fair share of this. She can be just as goofy as the rest of the crew.
** She sometimes uses Luffy's off-the-wall nicknames for people, i.e. "Weird Knight" for Gan Fall and "Tra-guy" for Trafalgar Law.
** Not to mention her ButtMonkey status. [[Creator/EiichiroOda Oda]] had a field day with Thriller Bark.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** [[spoiler:Her running into Luffy's arms and crying over Sanji's fate in Zou proves that the situation is serious.]]
** If Nami decides to cook, she'll charge anyone who wants to eat. [[spoiler:In the Totland Arc, when Luffy's [[LethalChef cooking skills]] depletes the Straw Hats' entire food supply and blows a hole in the roof of the kitchen, she decides to cook for free so it won't happen again (because she knows the consequences of letting him have free of reign of it again), earning a BigWhat from Luffy.]]
** Normally, Nami reacts very loudly and expressively to imminent threats or things that scare her. [[spoiler: However, when stuck with nowhere to go on the Sunny and with Big Mom about to drop an ''enourmous'' tsunami over their heads, she quietly and calmly apologizes to Luffy over the "phone" (not really; long story short, [[ItMakesSenseInContext it's a mirror shard that acts like facetime]]) and simply says that she thinks they're done for while tearing up a bit. It seems that she ''actually'' believes they're about to die this time, and it's utterly heartbreaking]].
* OneWomanArmy: Nami has ''more'' than earned her place as this. She was already fairly powerful, but in the climax of the Totland Arc, she and Luffy alone were able to take down half of Big Mom's personal PraetorianGuard -- the only reason they even lost was due to the enemy having such superior numbers (and Charotte Galette [[NoSell no-selling]] her powers, without which she's just an athletic but overall weak human).
* OnlyOneName: Although several other characters, including some of the Straw Hats, also count, she's especially notable in that she ''literally'' has only one name. Being orphaned when she was a baby, it was her adoptive mom Bellemere who named her Nami, and her surname has been lost to history, as has her birth-given name. Bell-mère also had only one name, so no adoptive surname exists for her, either.
* OnlySaneWoman: Has bemoaned how their crew always seems to attract the weird ones. She actually ''cries tears of joy'' when [[TheStoic Robin]] joins.
* OutOfFocus: Her dream as a child was to draw maps of all places she visited, and eventually a World Map itself; Arlong made her dream a nightmare, but when Nami parted ways with her village to join Luffy's crew, she expressed again her dream to draw maps; since then however, Nami isn't seen drawing maps of any kind – though one may assume that she's doing so ''off-screen'', because the map-making in itself (as opposed to achieving the goal of a ''complete'' World Map) is not necessary to move the plot forward. That said, she can be seen drawing maps in anime filler multiple times, as well as some of the openings and endings.
** She, Chopper, Sanji, and Brook during the second half of the Dressrosa Arc. They were absent from the story for more than a year and a half in the real world before reappearing (from December 2013 to July 2015).
* ParentalAbandonment: Nami's birth parents were never seen, but her and Nojiko being the only survivors of their hometown leaves no doubt about their parents' fate.
* PhantomThief: Nami can steal practically anything without anyone noticing (as seen in the Drum arc). However, she prefers to brag.
* PirateGirl: She wasn't ''at all'' proud to work with Luffy at the start of the series due to watching a pirate kill her mother and being enslaved by that same pirate at the start of the series. Thanks to Luffy intervening, however, she now embraces her role as a pirate, as it has brought her many great friends and ''lots'' of [[MoneyFetish money]].
* ProtectiveCharm: The Vivre Card that Lola gave Nami in Thriller Bark arc [[ChekhovsGun turns out to be this]] in the Totto Land arc. [[spoiler:Lola says that it's actually her mother's card - that is, Big Mom's, who ate the Soul-Soul Fruit; as Vivre Cards are representations of someone's soul, Big Mom's naturally have a profound effect when it comes to the "[[AnimateInanimateObject Homies]]" animated by Big Mom putting people's souls into them. Namely, they don't want to attack Nami because they feel Big Mom's aura around her.]]
* ProudBeauty: She's attractive, she knows it, and knows how to use it to her advantage.
* RedOniBlueOni: When compared to Robin, she's far more likely to raise her voice and express emotions (anger and frustration, but occasionally sorrow) or otherwise breakdown. Also, compare the visual aesthetic of the FieryRedhead Nami to the AloofDarkHairedGirl Robin.
* SandInMyEyes: When she's captured at Weatheria and put in jail for trying to steal meteorological equipment, she reads about Ace's death in the newspaper and breaks down crying, causing her captors to freak out and release her. She quickly reveals that it was just an act, and she makes off with the equipment she stole, along with one of the meteorologists, who notes that she still hasn't stopped crying.
* ScienceHero: Meteorological science, to be exact.
* ScreamingWoman: Though it's more so because she's only one (other than Usopp) perceptive enough to realize just how bad things are, Nami's shrieks of terror are a regular occurrence.
* SelfHarm: During the Arlong arc, after a [[DirtyCop corrupt Marine]] in league with Arlong "confiscates" the ransom money Nami had spent eight years collecting on his orders, Nami freaks out and starts repeatedly stabbing the Arlong tattoo on her arm with a knife, not stopping until Luffy makes her do so.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: She's given a fancy, backless dress as a thank-you present from Wanda for helping save the country of Zou. [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji]] was visibly pleased with it... which, in short, helped earn him a MegatonPunch.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She isn't ashamed to show her body to others as long as they pay her afterwards.
* ShesGotLegs: Most of her outfits pre- and post-TimeSkip consist of short skirts and shorts that emphasize her legs, so they're often the first thing people see. It helps that [[WordOfGod Oda]]'s wife is Chiaki Inaba, the ''incredibly'' attractive actress who once played as Nami, so Oda based her character on her as a tribute. Her legs are PlayedForLaughs in the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Red-Hair of Class 3-Sea Time", where she's depicted as a school bully who would wear a DangerouslyShortSkirt and charge anyone who saw her legs 100,000 belli.
* ShockAndAwe: Her Perfect Clima Tact, essentially a super-taser on a stick, can create lightning strikes and other electrical discharges under the right conditions. It has other weather related functions, as well.
** After the TimeSkip, she gets a substantial upgrade in the form of the Sorcery Clima Tact. She can now produce electricity that visually looks about as powerful as [[PsychoElectro Enel's]] 30,000,000 volt vari, which is a huge upgrade.
* ShouldntYouStopStealing: For some time after her reason for stealing (i.e freeing her village) ceases, she still keeps her stealing habit.
* ShowSomeLeg: Nami tends to use her charm in this form to her advantage.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: She brings this very trope into question during the Davy Back Fight, believing she'll be the one picked to leave the crew because of how attractive she is.
* SoleSurvivor: Along with Nojiko, who was a toddler at the time, they're the only survivors from their initial hometown after a pirate attack.
* SquishyWizard: While she is not gifted with superhuman speed, strength or toughness, in fact, she's probably the weakest (physically) character in the crew after Usopp, she's still manages to keep up in fights because her Climatact and all it's variations allow her a wide-variety of extremely versatile and powerful effects. She can emulate the powers of multiple Devil Fruits, and she can usually avoid getting hit by crafting illusions or just making herself invisible.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Just before the crew entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked who had the highest and lowest IQ of all the characters introduced so far; he replied that Shanks's first mate, Benn Beckman, and Nami were the smartest (in that order), but he couldn't decide which characters were the dumbest because almost every other character is an idiot or a [[CloudCuckooLander space case]].
* TattooedCrook: Very important to her backstory, and how. She has a black tattoo (blue in the anime) on her left shoulder, which represents tangerines and pinwheels (a homage to [[GoodParents Bell-mère]] & [[CoolBigSis Nojiko,]] and [[ParentalSubstitute Genzo,]] respectively), where she used to have a tattoo for being a member of Arlong's crew.
* TheTease: She flirts with random villains to get information or to provide a distraction. Though as the show is NoHuggingNoKissing, her flirtations are rarely more than a wink and some tame compliments of the mark.
* TelescopingStaff: After the events of Zou, Ussop upgrades her staff with his Pop Greens, allowing it to extend to great lengths just by putting pressure on the handle.
* TeenGenius: When we are first introduced to her, she is eighteen and knows the ins-and-outs of sailing various kinds of ships, an almost entirely instinctive knowledge of climatology and meteorology, and an incredible knack at cartography that she had been refining since she was only ten years old. Eiichiro Oda states she was the third smartest character introduced in the East Blue Saga. The other two were pirates with years of experience, one being the first-mate of one of the most powerful men in the world. So yeah, she's smart.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Used this on Sanji [[spoiler:to verbally wound him for being a FakeDefector in the Whole Cake Island arc]].
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Vivi's Girly Girl, though it's all relative as neither is very tomboyish or girly (Vivi's girliness came out once she returned to Alabasta).
** Also the more [[HotBlooded passionate]] and [[{{Tomboy}} headstrong]] of the two ladies aboard the Thousand Sunny, although her hobbies are much more girly than Robin's, which are just... [[NightmareFetishist ''weird'']].
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Nami's childhood flashback showed she was completely inept in stealing. As an adult, she is now at {{Kaitou}}-level when it comes to performing thefts.
** Every time she gets a new Clima Tact (i.e. in Alabasta, Enies Lobby, and after the timeskip), but special mention needs to go to her after the timeskip, where she electrocutes ''a whole bar'', takes down Fishman soldiers (who are 10 times stronger than normal humans, mind you) like they were nothing, and displays the ability to make herself invisible with mirages to steal a very important document from Fishmen on power-increasing steroids. Also, she is far less of a coward than before: for example, she doesn't even flinch when having a gun pointed against her temple.
* TookALevelInIdealism: She used to be a shameless ClassyCatBurglar with a visceral hatred for all pirates as a result of a very traumatic childhood, where she was exploited by the pirate who killed her mother. After seeing the lengths to which Luffy, a young pirate, goes to protect and avenge her, she learns to trust the world again.
* TookALevelInKindness: Slowly as the series has gone on, but particularly after the timeskip. From forgiving Hatchi, [[spoiler:to hugging Usopp and Chopper when they reunite, to even immediately forgiving Jimbei for letting Arlong loose on East Blue,]] she's come a pretty long way from the JerkassFacade she started out with.
** Not to mention, she hits her crewmates far less often after the timeskip.
** Even before the timeskip she showed signs of this. When Robin was rescued and returned to the crew during Enies Lobby, Nami's immediate reaction was to {{glomp}} her.
* TragicBigot: Downplayed. Her experience with the Arlong Pirates left her not outright racist, but with the impression that all Fishmen are violent and oppressive toward humans, which made her initially reluctant to go to Fishman Island. Then the Saboady Archipelago arc shows her that Fishmen actually suffer far more prejudice from humans than vice versa, and Hachi, one of the less malevolent members of the Arlong Pirates, pulls a HeelFaceTurn.
* {{Tsundere}}: Gets pissed at the idiotic nature of her crew despite being very close to them; [[OnlySaneWoman completely]] [[SurroundedByIdiots understandable]], of course.
* {{Underboobs}}: Episode 560 conspicuously shrinks her bikini top to show them off.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Where she can keep several things, depending on the situation. Oda even jokingly calls it "the hidden Nami valley"!
* WalkingSwimsuitScene: Post TimeSkip, until the Zou arc, her outfits almost always included a bikini top. Kin'emon initially believes that she's been stripped (not that he's really complaining).
* WeakButSkilled: Her knowledge of the weather and her tools have gotten her out of tight spots more than once. Note the "weak" here is only in correlation to her crew, the strongest of whom can ''punch an entire city into two''.
* WeaponOfChoice: Her [[WeatherControlMachine Clima Tact and later Perfect Clima Tact]]. Even later, the Sorcery Clima Tact. Before those she used a normal wooden quarterstaff.
* WeatherControlMachine: Her Clima Tact, to an extent.
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Quite a few of her [[TheFashionista many, many,]] ''many'' different outfits feature a pair of these.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She can't ''stand'' spiders or insects. When trying to get the South Bird, she understandably has an OhCrap moment when she sees them.
* WildTake: While hers aren't as often or expressive as [[CowardlyLion Usopp's]], there's only two situations that make her do this - 1) when she's scared, and 2) when her crewmates are being idiots.
* WingdingEyes: Whenever anything related to cash is mentioned.
* WomenAreWiser: Along with Robin, she often has to express common sense since few of her male crewmembers, especially her captain Luffy, possess it. On the other hand, Nami has her own blind spots (such as the promise of wealth) and has to be reeled in by the others in turn.
* YouAreNotAlone: Upon learning Arlong backstabbed her and stole her fortune she would have used to buy her village's freedom, she starts crying and begs Luffy for help. He simply puts his hat on her head and moves Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp to attack Arlong for making her cry.
* YouKilledMyMother: Her hatred over Arlong is because the pirate murdered her foster mother, Bell-mère.

-->''"I am the Great Captain Usopp!"''

Usopp serves as the crew's sharpshooter, and previously served as the (barely competent) repairman for the ''Going Merry''. He had a reputation on his home island of being a serial liar who claimed that pirates were attacking, which came back to haunt him when pirates ''[[CryingWolf actually attacked]]''. He's a rather boastful seventeen/[[TimeSkip nineteen]] year-old who likes to tell tall tales (several of which actually are or do come true, after a fashion), though he's more prone to hiding behind the stronger crew members like Zoro when he gets into a fight. However, when push comes to shove he is very dependable. He specializes in the use of a slingshot, called the Galaxy Slingshot (''Ginga Pachinko''), which he replaced with the Kabuto and later the Black Kabuto.

His dream is to better himself and become a brave warrior like his father Yasopp, who serves alongside Shanks, Luffy's idol. According to Oda, he is the physically-weakest member of the crew, and his worries about [[CantCatchUp not being able to keep up]] with the stronger members, with the resulting inner turmoil from that, put him at odds with Luffy during one story arc, and ultimately resulted in the creation of an alter ego dubbed Sogeking (a pun on "Sogeki" (Sniping) and "King", "Sniper King" in the English versions) which he uses to draw on his inner strength and courage.

His first bounty, as "Sogeking", was 30,000,000 berries. After the events of the Dressrosa Arc, the government finally recognized Usopp himself by name and gave him his current bounty of 200,000,000 berries. In addition, he was given a new official epithet to go with his real name: "God" Usopp.
-----
* TenMinuteRetirement: In the [=CP9=] saga, he resigns from the Straw Hat Crew because of Luffy's decision to get a new ship which Usopp was ''vehemently'' against. He returns to the group after giving a heartfelt apology for his actions.
* AbnormalAmmo:
** It was one thing to be shooting hot sauce and gas bombs, among other things. [[spoiler:Now he's shooting seeds which instantly grow into man-eating plants]].
** He defeats [[spoiler:Sugar a second time]] by shooting a bizarre capsule-like contraption that opens up to reveal a drawing of himself doing a recreation of their previous fight, causing her to faint.
* AchillesInHisTent: Water 7 and Enies Lobby, as a result of Luffy changing ships and [[CantCatchUp feeling that he'll always lag behind the others]].
* AllUpToYou: During the Dressrosa arc, he's the only one left who can defeat Sugar and break the spell on all the humans-turned-toys. Unfortunately, that much pressure causes him to run away but their repeating his lies of his greatness forces him to go back, admit the truth, and then try his damnedest to win against Sugar. [[spoiler:He does.]]
** This is sort of Usopp's thing, actually, as he frequently comes in clutch to save the day when it's least expected.
* AnswersToTheNameOfGod: While on Dressrosa he gains the title of "God Usopp". Later, it becomes his real title when the marines recognize him by this name.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Taking one look at his Pinocchio-like nose should tell you he's a liar.
** A long nose is also evocative of the tengu, mythological creatures notorious for being boastful.
* AuraVision: [[spoiler:His "Observation Haki" allows him to see people's auras]].
* AudienceSurrogate: According to Oda, this is why he will always be designated as the weakest of the crew as his power level makes him relatively close to a real person. He tends to reflect how a real person might act and fight if placed in the One Piece
* BadassBeard: He grows a goatee during the TimeSkip.
** [[http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120714113234/onepiece/images/8/88/Usopp-Film-Z.png One of his outfits]] in ''One Piece Film Z'' gives him a full beard and BadassMoustache. Both fake, of course, but still pretty funny and cool.
* BadassBoast:
** "I am the great Captain Usopp! I have destroyed entire islands with my 8000 followers!" [[spoiler:Come the Dressrosa Arc, he ''did'' destroy an island... a FalseUtopia created with Sugar's [[RetGone toy powers]] and maintained by Doflamingo and his pirates, with 8000 Tontatta dwarves supporting him.]]
** Now in the manga: [[spoiler:"It's true, I've deteriorated... I used to lie a lot more... NOW I CAN ACTUALLY DO THOSE THINGS!" Hell yeah.]]
** Hilariously subverted in chapter 695: "I'll take on any enemy with their back to us!"
** Right before [[spoiler: sniping from halfway across Dressrosa to save Luffy and Law from Sugar's RetGone powers]]: "I'm the sniper; support is glory! Unnoticed by others, I shoot down the enemy to protect my friends!"
* BadassBookworm: His creative engineering has resulted in the creation of both the Clima-Tact and Kabuto. He also appears to have some knowledge concerning chemistry, being solely responsible for manufacturing the highly innovative slingshot pellets, or "stars", that he uses for ammunition.
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have the Devil Fruit superpowers of Luffy, Robin, Brook, and Chopper, the cybernetic enhancements of Franky, or the super-strength of Zoro and Sanji, but he's still capable of challenging opponents much stronger than him... when he gathers the courage to do so, that is.
** He's also got perhaps the highest pain tolerance of the entire crew, which ''really'' says a lot. He remained conscious after his battle in Alabasta which included every single bone in his body breaking. It comes up again in ''Anime/OnePieceFilmStrongWorld'' where the BigBad wipes out the whole crew by crushing them in stone and leaving them all unconscious...except Usopp.
** It's implied that after the TimeSkip, confronting fearsome opponents is less of a problem for him now. You know, comparatively. It takes a much higher level of threat to scare him than it used to, even relative to the higher levels of threat the crew is actually facing now, and ''sometimes'' he's quicker to overcome his fear.
* BadLiar: Alternates between this and ConsummateLiar. Everyone knows when he's lying and their only reaction is either with a snarky remark or comical hit to Usopp's head.
* BecomingTheBoast: Post-TimeSkip. [[spoiler: In Dressrosa, Usopp takes out a key officer of the Doflamingo Family not once but twice. One so vital to their enemy's plan that she was guarded night and day by an Elite Officer. The first time he does it through luck. But the second? He snipes her from the other side of a country with a bullet designed to target ''her mental trauma''.]] "Sniper King" indeed.
** It's also a running theme for him. When he was introduced, he'd frequently tell lies and stories to frighten enemies, amaze children, and entertain his friend. After going on adventures with the Straw Hats, he'd keep finding strange situations that he'd completely made up like a monstrously huge gold fish and over time each one of his stories began to be something he'd be able to retell as truth. With the above [[spoiler: The result of taking out Sugar means he'd in one fell swoop liberated Dofamingo's entire slave force, exposed the true nature of his rule over the country, and gained the devotion and admiration of every slave that benefited. In other words, he "brought a country to its knees with his army of thousands of followers".]]
* BigDamnHeroes: [[CrowningMomentOfFunny To himself]] with his own alter ego.
** Sogeking saving Robin while she was on the brink of the Gates of Justice certainly counts.
** When he returns in the TimeSkip, he rescues Nami from her fake doppelgänger and reunites with her.
** In Dressrosa, he saves Robin from being stripped naked by gnomes... off-screen. Yeah, that's right! When the gnomes are about to take her clothes, they immediately stop as one of gnomes tells them to stop. The reason: Usopp lied to them that he is their hero and he mentioned that Robin is his friend. Usopp himself ''doesn't even appear'' in that chapter.
* BondBreaker: The entire argument and fight between himself and Luffy over leaving or keeping a heavily-damaged Merry. Why do you count him here? The entire debacle happened ''before'' we found out that Merry was sentient.
** Sort of. Usopp ''did'' see the Klabautermann before this, though he was only vaguely aware of what it meant.
* BrainyBrunette: Despite being a constant liar and LovableCoward, Usopp has proven to be a brilliant inventor and adequate battle tactician.
* BratsWithSlingshots: As a 17 year old kid, Usopp's personal weapon of choice was a simple slingshot rather than the guns most other snipers use. Despite being seemingly mundane, it's a ''very'' dangerous and effective weapon in his hands. Even after several upgrades (including utilizing a ''sling-staff'') and a Timeskip, Usopp will still fall back on the classic slingshot when he needs to.
* ButtMonkey: Every now and then. A RunningGag seems to feature him refusing to go into a dangerous place out of fear, or getting himself in the most dangerous situations either by accident or by his crewmates.
* CallingYourAttacks: While everyone in the series does this, Usopp occasionally exploits this trope by deliberately miscalling his attacks.
* CantCatchUp: Part of the reason he temporarily leaves the crew in one pre-TimeSkip arc.
* TheCape: Sogeking is a parodied-yet-straight example. On one hand, his first action as Sogeking is to volunteer his services because the Straw Hat-Franky Family alliance was trying to rescue a DamselInDistress. His Sogeking persona is likewise more heroic and professional, and yes, [[SuperheroesWearCapes he wears a cape]]. On the other hand, he takes this persona on because he can't swallow his pride and help as "Usopp, former Straw Hat", his former crewmates think he's nuts (except for Luffy and Chopper who were respectively too oblivious and too childish to realize Sogeking was Usopp), and the theme song is played for cheesiness.
* CharacterDevelopment: Usopp becomes a more confident fighter and loses a lot of his cowardice.
%%* CharlieBrownFromOuttaTown: Sogeking.
* ChickMagnet: Despite being a LovableCoward, Usopp attracts women at parties.
* ChivalrousPervert: A [[CovertPervert subtler]] example than most. The best example of this is when he, Zoro, and Brook are trapped in a suspended cage in Ryugu Palace and Brook explains his newfound ability to extend his soul over long distances. He also explains that his soul can travel through solid objects, including walls, to which he begins to have a small nosebleed, indicating that he used this ability to peep on girls over the duration of the timeskip. Usopp begins crying to Zoro, stating that Brook was, "making him jealous." The "chivalrous" part also comes in when he sees Nami naked and politely thanks her.
* ConfusionFu: Mixes a bit of this into his fighting style, including [[CallingYourAttacks calling the wrong attack names]] and randomly attacking his opponents with a Rubber Band Of Doom. Psyching his opponent out is an important part of his fighting style, as when he beats Perona by convincing her he can lift a 10-ton hammer (an inflatable balloon which explodes on impact – by which time she has fainted) and taking out an opponent with one blow from his "5-ton hammer" before that – two frying pans and a stick wrapped in foil.
* ConsummateLiar: Alternates between this and BadLiar. Usopp never leaves a chance to tell a big lie about himself. Unfortunately for him, this gets deconstructed in his character introduction when he tries to warn Kaya about Kuro. He begins to gradually stop doing this after some CharacterDevelopment.
* CovertPervert: While not as bad as [[LovableSexManiac Sanji]], Usopp shows a subtle perverted side.
* CowardlyLion: He's usually the first Straw Hat to turn around and haul ass when something dangerous is going on. It's only when he's in his element (and far away from the battle site) does he provide useful aid for his friends. But once the fights end and his bravado wears off, he's normal Usopp once more. He's slowly overcoming this after the TimeSkip.
* TheCracker: The gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Red-Hair of Class 3-Sea Time" depicts him as a school delinquent hacker who plans to hack into the world's Transponder Snail system for presumably nefarious reasons.
* CrazyPrepared: His fight with Luffy shows us what Usopp can really pull off with a little prep time and prior knowledge of his opponent.
** Then, he made a hundred ways to apologize to him. Spent days doing that. In the end, none of them were of any use, but intention is what matters.
** His boast during his fight with Daruma indicates that he has improved his ability to put together CrazyPrepared-style battle strategies on the fly.
*** Heck, even before that -- even before the timeskip -- his fight with Perona was an excellent showcase of just how fast he can come up with plans once he knows what he's dealing with.
* CryingWolf: Comes back to bite him in the ass in his introduction arc when pirates really do come to his island.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Usopp's dad, Yasopp, left him and his mother, Banchina, behind to become a pirate (though with her consent). His mother fell ill shortly after. He started telling lies about his dad returning to cheer his mom up, but she died anyway. He kept lying as a protective mechanism, which turned him into an outcast routinely chased by his neighbors in the village he grew up in (but it turned out that said neighbors really did appreciate him, as his constant shouting about pirates served as their alarm clock and reminder to get ready for the day).
* DeadpanSnarker: Even Usopp has his moments, particularly when paired with [[IdiotHero Luffy]].
* DoesNotLikeSpam: According to [[WordOfGod Oda]], he hates mushrooms due to getting food poisoning from eating them once.
* DropTheHammer: The few attacks that don't involve his slingshots seem to be this; a slight subversion in that two of his hammers are anything but deadly. Although both of them seem to have some sort of psychological effect on the target.
* DubNameChange:
** The French manga has him renamed "Pipo" (a word for "lie") to keep the MeaningfulName.
** The Funimation dub and Viz manga change his alter ego's name from Sogeking to "Sniper King".
** The German anime and manga renamed him Lysop, a reference to the word "lie" (Lüge).
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler:As of chapter 758, Usopp now has '''Observation Haki'''.]]
* EnhancedArchaicWeapon: The Kabuto slingshot incorporates a breath dial that serves to increase the shot velocity and to add a spin on the projectile for better stability. The Kuro Kabuto/Black Kabuto is a LivingWeapon, incorporating a carnivorous plant called the Chomping Grass into its structure, which Usopp has trained to gather rubble for use as ammunition. It can also be used to launch multi-stage rockets.
* FakeUltimateHero:
** His tall tales eventually gained him this status in Skypiea, where cover stories show a "Rubber Band Land" (as he'd claimed he'd destroyed the Giant Jack with his "Usopp Rubber Band") featuring a statue of himself looking not unlike Shandian hero Calgara. A running gag is that more and more of his lies come true as the series goes on.
** Sogeking also counts.
---> "On the Sniper Island, I was born. A hundred shots, a hundred hits! Lu lu lala lu Even a mouse's eye, lock on! Even your heart, lock on! The man who came from the Sniper Island lululu lala lu Run away! Sogesogesoge Sogeking!"
** It's gotten even more ludicrous as the Dressrosa arc continues [[spoiler:as he is dubbed "God Usopp", the roof of the weapons factory collapsing is perceived to be his miracle by the gladiator convicts, and Doflamingo issues the highest bounty to him out of the twelve that have been a massive hindrance to his plans for "defeating" Sugar alone]]. [[AscendedFanboy Bartolomeo]] was {{squee}}ing at being in the presence of "Sogeking": the man who set the World Government flag aflame.
* FantasticFlora: [[spoiler:Some of the Pop Green plants are quite strange, such as a plant that has a bouncy bubble on it and a wolf-shaped bushes, the bulbs of which release ''shock waves'']].
* FlowerMotifs: According to Yuriko Yamaguchi (Robin's voice actress), Usopp's flower is the daisy, which represents innocence, loyalty, and (alternatively) dishonesty. He's a KiddieKid who's a FriendToAllChildren, utterly devoted to Luffy and crew despite his cowardice, and a ConsummateLiar.
* {{Foil}}: To Luffy. He and Luffy are around the same age and were inspired by the same pirate crew each with their own idol (Shanks with Luffy, Yassop with Usopp). While they get along quite well, their underlying dispositions are quite the opposite; Luffy is a fearless pirate captain with absurd strength, while Usopp aspires to be a great pirate captain but is often hampered by his cowardice and weakness. Luffy is a barehanded fighter who often fights close range while Usopp is a long ranged fighter who prefers to be in the shadows.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: His lies and (totally untrue) {{Badass Boast}}s turn into this after the TimeSkip. Remember the "destroying islands with 8000 followers" boast? That came true [[spoiler:in the Dressrosa arc, where he gains the support of the Tontatta kingdom, and destroys Doflamingo's grip over Dressrosa and the FalseUtopia he was maintaining on its people through [[RetGone Sugar]] (the first time was a complete accident)]].
* FragileSpeedster: An odd case. He's a living double-subversion; he's not exactly super fast and not exactly fragile. He does run ''very'' fast, but more on par with a real-life Olympic sprinter than the superhumanly fast [[LightningBruiser Monster Trio]] and Brook. He also will go down with a few hard hits, which is deemed "fragile" in the One Piece world... but considering those blows come from people who can punch holes in concrete, [[MadeOfIron he's really not that fragile either]].
* FreudianExcuse: His constant lying started when his father, Yasopp, left him and his mother, Banchina (with her consent) to become a pirate. Shortly after, Banchina fell ill, so Usopp would shout that "pirates are coming!" to cheer her up until she died. He continued lying ever since as a psychological defense mechanism.
* FriendToAllChildren: While all the crew are friendly to kids, Usopp is the most openly helpful, giving advice and offering aid publicly, while the other main defender of children, Zoro, [[JerkassFacade cloaks his in a stern, emotionless facade]].
* FriendlyTarget: Suffered through this during the Water 7 arc.
* GadgeteerGenius: His main contribution to the crew. He notably made and upgrades his and Nami's weapons.
* GagNose: A distinguishing feature and helps liken him to Pinocchio, also famous for lies.
* GenerationXerox: Like his father, Usopp is the marksman of his crew and follows under a captain who wears a straw hat.
* {{Gonk}}: A downplayed example. Usopp's bug eyes, long nose and large lips make him distinctly cartoonish-looking, which is especially noticeable when compared to the other "ordinary" men on the crew Zoro and Sanji, who are both drawn to be very handsome.
* GreenThumb: After the TimeSkip, he's able to fire off Pop Green seeds which immediately sprout things ranging from man-eating plants, to seaweed, to bamboo spears.
* HeavyVoice: Has one after gaining weight on the Bowin Islands. He loses the voice when he burns off the weight ''and then some'' though, gaining quite a lot of pure muscle over those 2 years.
* HeroWorship: He idolized his father Yasopp, even after his father left the family to become a pirate. Usopp later has a similar idolism towards the Giant Warrior Race of Elbaf.
* HopeSpot: When Doflamingo initiated Birdcage, Usopp expresses relief that he wasn't one of the targets... except Doflamingo was saving the best for last: he ranked Usopp as the ''highest target of them all''.
* IconicOutfit: His original brown overalls with the bandanna and goggles as well as his first TimeSkip outfit, the baggy yellow overalls.
* ImprobableAimingSkills:
** He's able to take out soldiers several hundred yards away while standing on the roof of a building that's a good couple hundred feet tall. While it was very windy. With a goddamn slingshot/staff thing. Notably, the soldiers he's shooting at point out that even if they were able to aim reliably at this distance, their rifles ''couldn't shoot that far''.
** And now he topped that by sniping [[spoiler: Doflamingo's key ally Sugar]] from ''one country away''. '''''With another goddamn slingshot/staff thing!''''' King of Snipers indeed...
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He often alternates between bragging and being either cowardly (when played for laughs) or deeply insecure in his skills (when it isn't). This has lessened with CharacterDevelopment during and after the Water 7 arc.
* JackOfAllTrades: One of his defining traits and an essential part of his OvershadowedByAwesome neurosis. He's good at quite a bit, but there's a crew member that's better at it (except sniping). He can cook and has a decent sense of strategy (look at what he did in his fight with Luffy), but Sanji is the supreme chef and a genius tactician. He's shown some talent for stealth and deception, but Nami is a master thief and people actually believe her lies. He's an inventor and shipwright, but Franky rebuilt himself into a cyborg and created a CoolShip with a WaveMotionGun. He's competent at medical care (he's usually assisting in operation and the like) and a versatile fighter, but Chopper is a super doctor and has a devil fruit that allows him to do almost anything in a fight. And he's (surprisingly) physically resilient and has shown a good deal of charisma, but Luffy is made of HeroicSpirit and has warmed the hearts of people who have wanted him dead. Overall, he's the weakest fighter of the group, and when it comes to being one of the smart/crafty guys. Even his gift at ranged combat is unfortunate, as he lives in a world where AnnoyingArrows seem to be the rule, and every fight of importance is resolved face to face.
** At the same time, he's a useful member ''because'' of this trope, considering how, at any point, when a crew member needs help, ''he'' is almost always the crew member to go to. With the above in mind, even though everyone is better at a certain thing than him, that doesn't mean he's bad at ''any'' of the above: on the contrary, he's quite skilled. The weakest crew member status is only really there because he doesn't ''specialize'' in one fighting style that ''isn't'' sniping. [[spoiler: Otherwise, why the hell do you think he has '''[[AwesomenessIsAForce Haki?]]''']]
*** In terms of trades, he takes up every role that isn't already occupied by a specialist. A short list would include designing the Straw Hats' skull-and-crossbones and painting it on the Going Merry, creating various weapons and ammo (including mastering some very esoteric technologies to do so), creating functional diving bells out of crap that was lying around the ship, cutting the crew's hair (along with Robin), fishing (along with Luffy and Chopper), cooking (apparently he's the best male cook in the crew besides Sanji), amateur carpentry, and that's all on top of his dedicated role of manning the cannons.
* KiddieKid: Usopp was introduced as a 17-year-old young man who spent his time hanging out with a bunch of 8 year olds and told outrageous lies for no real reason other than the fun of it (and, due to ParentalAbandonment, as psychological defense). Part of his character development is him turning from this into a true man like his father.
* LamarckWasRight: His new badassery (despite being the weakest of the crew) actually makes sense when you consider his pedigree. His dad Yasopp is the sniper of an ''Emperor's'' crew.
* LargeHam: He gets a little theatrical when boasting, but it's when he's being Sogeking that he really begins to ham it up.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSS1YDhQOpU Usopp Eyecatcher.]]
* LetsGetDangerous: Sogeking. Also, other Straw Hats have fought Luffy, but because of some misunderstanding or starting out as a villain. Usopp is the only one who has ever challenged Luffy to a duel – and taught him the seriousness of being a captain in the process.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: An infamous sniper working for an infamous captain. Sounds like his old man Yasopp.
* LovableCoward: In Chapter 695, he says this:
-->'''Usopp:''' "Leave all wounded enemies with their backs to us to me!"
* MadeOfIron: Being the weakest doesn't stop him from getting beaten up just as bad as the Monster Trio. Sometimes ''even worse''. [[HeroicSpirit But that usually doesn't stop him.]]
* MagneticHero: It's strange, but there have been a number of times when the Straw Hats would've been screwed without Usopp showing up with new allies. His "8000 followers" boast might actually come true one day.
** He turned Oimo and Kashi against the Marines at Enies Lobby [[BigDamnHeroes in the nick of time]].
** In Dressrosa, he leads an army of dwarves.
** After saving [[spoiler:the toys]], they change back to [[spoiler:their original forms]] and they worship him like Jesus (not the Burgess guy). And they follow his command.
* ManChild: Not to the extent of Luffy (because who possibly ''could'' match Luffy as a ManChild anyway?), but he's still this after the Timeskip (before then, he qualifies as more of a KiddieKid). Aside from Chopper and the aforementioned Luffy, he's the one most likely to be seen goofing around, playing silly pranks, and getting excited over boyish things like robots despite almost being in his 20's.
* MaskOfConfidence: How Sogeking works. Even better, Sogeking wears a literal ''mask''.
* MeaningfulName: The "Uso" in Usopp means "Liar" or "Lie" in Japanese, and we all know what a (good or bad) liar he is. In a hilariously awesome twist, his constant lies end up becoming truth, especially after the time skip.
* MilesGloriosus: In his introduction chapter.
* NeverBareheaded: He always has some kind of headgear on.
* NiceGuy: In spite of his cowardly nature, Usopp is a sentimental and fun-loving guy who would do anything for his friends.
* NiceHat: After the timeskip, Usopp begins wearing a yellowish hat. He also wore one in the pre-timeskip movie ''Anime/BaronOmatsuriAndTheSecretIsland'', which was nice enough to make DJ Kappa want to steal it for his own.
* NightmareFace: [[spoiler:In the Dressrosa arc, Sugar feeds him a grape covered in [[BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce Tatabasco sauce]] that was actually meant for her. It made Usopp do such a horrific WildTake that Sugar was scared into unconsciousness, which rendered her [[RetGone toy powers]] useless, allowing everyone to remember and breaking Doflamingo's hold over Dressrosa. It's later weaponized by Usopp himself, by using a projectile bearing his earlier Nightmare Face to exploit Sugar's new fear of anything with long noses in order to save Luffy and Law from [[RetGone being turned into toys]]]].
* NoSell: He's completely immune to Perona's Negative Hollow because he's a natural pessimist.
* OhMeAccentsSlipping: While under his Sogeking guise in the anime, his "heroic" voice tends to go away when he's surprised or otherwise distracted.
* OnlySaneMan: At times when Luffy's around, though he's equally willing (or not willing) to join in on the silly antics.
* OutOfFocus: Zoro, Robin, Usopp, and Franky are all completely absent during the Whole Cake Island arc due to heading for Wano instead. This mirrors Nami, Chopper, Sanji, and Brook's absence during most of the Dressrosa Arc.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: [[WordOfGod Eiichiro Oda]] pegs him as the guy who will always be the weakest of the crew. Lampshaded when he says he can't keep up with the rest of the crew's "monster" strengths during the Water 7 arc.
* PaperThinDisguise: Sogeking. Only Luffy and Chopper failed to realize that it was actually him, and his bottom lip can be seen when he exclaims.
* PossessionImpliesMastery: Played straight. Usopp can operate or make wondrous inventions out of anything he can put his hands on, including a cannon (which he'd never operated before), advanced fireworks, and the bizarre "Dials" of Skypiea (which he could never even have seen or researched).
* PunnyName: It's a cross between "uso", the Japanese word for lie, and "{{Aesop}}".
* TheReliableOne: Usopp is the LovableCoward, MilesGloriosus, and weakest member of the crew. So why is he this? He lost a duel with Luffy and had to leave the crew at Water 7. However, when Usopp hears that Robin offered herself to the Marines, he immediately joins the rest of the Straw Hats to take back Robin, ''in disguise''. He's saved Robin from death or worse twice. The first time was at Enies Lobby, when no one else was able to - [[spoiler:'''the second time being in Dressrosa after he had lost all memory of her and didn't even know she needed saving'''. While doing that he also kickstarted a full-scale revolution by breaking a Devil Fruit curse on thousands of people. And with Luffy unaware of Doflamingo's most dangerous subordinate, he did it all on his own. There's a reason why Doflamingo, one of the most cunning and calculating pirates in the world, gives Usopp a higher bounty than ''Luffy, Law, or Sabo.'']]
* RunningGag: The "Rubber Band of Doom" attack, consisting of Usopp simply flicking a rubber band at the enemy. Whenever Usopp gets in a long string of attacks, expect the Rubber Band of Doom attack to show up right in the middle.
** Where is Sniper Island? It's in your heart.
** All of Usopp's lies and stories actually happen for real at one point or another.
** Pre-TimeSkip, due to his cowardly nature, he would be the first to do a WildTake and try to haul ass whenever danger rears its ugly head. He doesn't do it as much anymore due to CharacterDevelopment on his part.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: A RunningGag of his to haul ass while things are getting good, and has done so at least once an arc. When he comes back though, he makes it count. Saving Robin before Spandam can take her through the Gates of Justice and beating Choo during the fight against Arlong's crew are just a few examples.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Has this dynamic whenever he's paired up in scenes with Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, or others like them. {{Downplayed|Trope}}, as he's not ''that'' "sensitive" as much as he is simply practical and cautious; he more so comes off this way when contrasted to the Monster Trio's hyper-masculinity and fearlessness.
* SignificantBirthDate: Usopp was born on April 1st, which is fitting for a liar.
* SinisterShades: He wears a pair of sunglasses in the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Red-Hair of Class 3-Sea Time", where he's depicted as a [[TheCracker teenaged hacker]] trying to hack the world's Transponder Snail system.
* SmallNameBigEgo: When he lies, he speaks of himself as a MartyStu. Only [[GeniusDitz Chopper]] ever believes him, though.
* TheSmartGuy: He looks like a ditz and occasionally acts like it, but he's come up with some decent plans and tricks to use in battle over the years. During their duel, he even discovered ways to bypass Luffy's innate rubber defense.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:To Doflamingo in the Dressrosa arc. Usopp took out a key member of the Doflamingo family by ''scaring her into unconsciousness''. The kicker is that said key member, Sugar, has the power to RetGone people by turning them into living toys, which has the side effect of erasing the memories of anyone related to her targets. Doflamino heavily relies on Sugar to maintain his FalseUtopia. When Sugar is knocked out, all of Doflamingo's plans fall apart. When bounties of the Straw Hats were posted in Dressrosa, Usopp's was ''five hundred million'']].
* SpiderSense: Awakened his [[spoiler: Observation Haki during a stressful situation on Dressrosa where he had to blindly snipe the enemy from ''miles'' away or doom the whole mission. Impressively, his very first use was good enough to see the target clearly through a wall from several miles away ''and'' get the perfect shot.]]
* TheStarscream: Parodied. He constantly refers to himself as the captain, but actually feels UndyingLoyalty towards Luffy.
* TheStoryteller: He frequently tells stories, and his name is a reference to Aesop. There's actually a RunningGag throughout the series of [[BecomingTheBoast Usopp's stories actually coming true.]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks like a combination of his mother and father's traits. Yasopp even looked like his son when he was younger, down to the black hair (before he dyed it blonde).
* SuperSpeed: While it's not really super-human in itself, he's still a very fast runner. By fast, I mean "being as fast as a Pacifista while carrying Zoro".
* TeamNormal: Along with Nami. It causes some self-worth issues at one point, but he eventually gets over it and becomes an ever-increasingly BadassNormal.
* ThisLooksLikeAJobForAquaman: He tends to fight some of the trickier enemies, ones where even Luffy and the Monster Trio's usual fighting style and demeanor would be unsuited for. Some examples include Miss Goldenweek, Perona, and Sugar.
* ThrowTheDogABone: Quite a few times in the series, especially after the TimeSkip. He has [[spoiler:dwarves from Tontatta that revere him]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Again, Sogeking. Post-timeskip, he has broader shoulders, large biceps, and more muscles in general. He still runs away when he is scared, but this time he attacks back, even when he faces creatures.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. [[spoiler:During the Dressrosa Arc, his Observation Haki was activated during a ''very'' stressful situation, trying to save both Law and Luffy from being [[RetGone turned into toys]] by Sugar, while also dealing with greedy townspeople out for the ridiculously high bounty Doflamingo put on him. It was a "life or death" situation for both his crew and everyone living on the island. He had been concentrating on making his shot so hard that he activated his Haki.]]
* TrickBullet: All of his ammunition. Some produce gas or dangerous plants after being fired.
* TroubledFetalPosition: Ended up here at the beginning of the Skypiea saga. Drowning, then falling, might do that to somebody.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: He unknowingly played a part in the "death" of the Straw Hats' old ship, the ''Going Merry'' - he spotted her Klabautermann, the living personification of a ship that was beloved and well-cared for. Spotting a Klabautermann meant that the ship it personified will be doomed. While the injuries the ''Going Merry'' sustained from the Straw Hats' adventures - specifically, [[WoundThatWillNotHeal her cracked keel]], it was Usopp that led to her getting those injuries in the first place, and led to his famous fight with Luffy over whether they should keep Merry or not.
* VoiceChangeling: He has a talent for mimicking other people's voices perfectly.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Post TimeSkip, he doesn't wear a shirt so that he can emphasize his muscular physique.
* WeakButSkilled:
** Physically the weakest of the crew (WordOfGod says he always will be, no matter what), but he's able to come out on top through a wide array of tools, gadgets and clever tactics. At this point, "weakest of the crew" just means he couldn't beat them in a straight-up fight... which is the one thing ''he wouldn't do anyway''.
** The best example of this for Sogeking would be sniping soldiers on top of the tower at Enies Lobby... where the wind was against him and not even guns can fire accurately. At a range guns can't even reach!
** An even better example is how the guy actually held his own against ''Luffy'', the inhuman powerhouse, for a respectable amount of time in their duel using only his intimate knowledge of his captain's fighting techniques and one day to get CrazyPrepared.
** His tools and gadgets now include summoning man-eating plants. Not to mention he's actually pretty buff now.
** Later, Usopp picked up on [[spoiler:[[AwesomenessIsAForce Observational Haki]]]].
* WeaponOfChoice:
** A slingshot; he upgrades to the Kabuto, a [[XOnAStick slingshot/staff hybrid]].
** His Black Kabuto turns out to be a LivingWeapon, it can change into a carnivorous plant called Chomping Grass that can eat things and spit them back out.
* WildTake: While exaggerated expressions are a common staple in ''One Piece'', Usopp is usually the first one to react whenever something crazy is going on. [[spoiler:It's weaponized in the Dressrosa arc, where being fed a super spicy grape turns Usopp's usual WildTake into a NightmareFace so horrific that Sugar, who can RetGone people by turning them into toys, is scared into unconsciousness, turning everyone back to normal and breaking Doflamingo's hold over Dressrosa. Usopp later exploits this to save Luffy and Law from being turned into toys by firing a projectile at her that heavily resembles his spicy grape-induced WildTake]].
* TheWorfEffect: Despite being a durable and tricky fighter, sometimes he is defeated relatively easily to show the massive power gap that only the Monster Trio or the stronger crew members can take on. Examples include Mr. 2 Bon Clay, the Franky Family, Jyabura, and Trebol.
* WouldHitAGirl: It's not an issue for him - actually, the fact that he often ends up fighting female enemies (especially young, harmless-looking ones who are [[NotSoHarmlessVillain actually quite dangerous]]) is approaching a RunningGag. It's also a RunningGag, however, that while he is perfectly willing to hit female enemies, he ends up defeating them without hitting them. Miss Merry Christmas was defeated by her own dimwitted partner who mistook her for Usopp thanks to some smoke, but his most recent tactic is apparently scaring the opponent to unconsciousness, as seen with Perona [[spoiler:and Sugar]].

-->''"The Marines may not be concerned with me right now, but soon I, Black Leg Sanji, will be the most infamous of all!"''

Sanji is the crew's [[SmokingIsCool chain-smoking]], nineteen/[[TimeSkip twenty-one]]-year-old chef. [[ChefOfIron There is not a dish he cannot cook]], [[HandsomeLech a pretty girl he will not try to]] [[ChivalrousPervert woo]], [[VolleyingInsults or something he will not argue with Zoro over]]. As a chef, he believes that he cannot afford to harm his hands, and so uses a fighting style which uses [[ExtremityExtremist only his feet]] called the "Black Leg Style" (''Kuroashi no Waza''). He and Zoro argue and fight so regularly that it almost borders on FoeYay.

His dream is to find a legendary patch of sea called All Blue, where one can find species of fish from all over the world. His mentor, former-pirate-turned-restaurant-owner Zeff, is one he shares his dreams with, and Sanji worked under him as a way to pay Zeff back for saving his life when the two were stuck on a rock with barely any food when Sanji was a child.

Sanji has also shown some ButtMonkey tendencies lately, as he's become the butt of an ever-increasing list of jokes, including a ugly, poorly drawn bounty poster that no one has any trouble identifying him with, a man who ''resembles'' said bounty poster coming for revenge, and most recently, Kuma blasting him to an island filled with, of all things, drag queens, leading him to declare that [[IronicHell he is in Hell]]. While there, he learns of a special recipe to make the consumer stronger and trains with the 99 Newkama Kenpo masters.

His first bounty was 77,000,000 Berries. He was, however, frequently unrecognized since his old wanted poster was a poorly-drawn composite sketch. His current bounty is 177,000,000 berries, and he has finally gained an actual picture for his poster (albeit a goofy take of him with his typical "heart" eyes). Oddly, he is wanted alive, unlike the other Straw Hats and every other known criminal (who are all "dead or alive").

It is revealed that Sanji is the fourth child of the Vinsmoke family, an infamous family of rulers-killers who once conquered North Blue. His father, Judge, had Sanji retrieved in order to marry him off to one of Big Mom's daughters in order to form a political alliance.
-----
* ABNegative: It turns out Sanji has a rare blood type. This becomes extremely problematic when the {{Nosebleed}} after {{Nosebleed}} he'd been suffering and had been PlayedForLaughs after being exposed to real women again caused him to go through all of Chopper's stock of that specific type. As a result, when a mermaid tries to keep him hidden by stuffing him into [[MarshmallowHell Marshmallow Heaven]], he has such an [[HighPressureBlood epic]] gusher that it becomes life-threatening. Further complicating the situation was the issue that due to some latent racism between humans and merfolks, those who had the blood type refused to donate either out of discrimination or fear of the enforcers of the regime.
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: The Viz translation of the manga takes his regular attack names (one-word French cooking terms, for the most part), and adds a second word, usually alliterative with the first, to them, resulting in names like "Trompine Treader" and "Mouton Mallet".
* {{Adorkable}}:
** You wouldn't guess it from his usual suave and collected persona, but he has a lot of moments where his fan-boyish like devotion to Nami can come off as this. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt-hP1Pwuqg See here]]. By extension, he also has these moments with other women too, such as Viola.
** His relationship with Pudding is very cute and awkward, [[spoiler: both before and after her HeelFaceTurn.]]
* AllAccordingToPlan: He's the tactical mastermind of the crew and all of his plans work out the way he wants them to. But the most notable incident still is his Mr. Prince shtick in the Alabasta arc, complete with him saying those exact words while smiling deviously.
** Enies Lobby deserves special mention as well. Sanji disappeared from the fight, only to reveal later that not only did he rig the aiming of the cannons of several warships to miss the Going-Merry, but he also closed the Doors of Justice to create whirlpools that would make the larger ships stand still, but allow their tinier ship to escape. Given his due with Luffy's exclaim of "ARE YOU A GENIUS?"
* AlmightyJanitor: At least at first. During the Alabasta Arc, he went around kicking ass without even being recognized as a Straw Hat. He wasn't as well known as even Usopp at that point, but he's still in the top three fighters of the crew. It still kinda applies, as despite being Zoro and Luffy's equal in fighting ability, Sanji still doesn't have the third highest bounty of the crew; that would be Usopp (originally, it was Robin). And his skill as a spy and saboteur would no doubt also merit him a higher bounty, if not the fact that he's so good at such things that the World Government ''hasn't found out about those skills yet''.
** Not to mention that the photo for his bounty poster wasn't even him, but a badly drawn picture that barely resembles him, meaning he was the hardest member to identify. That has changed after the time-skip, as someone finally got a solid picture of him (even if he is depicted going love-nuts in it).
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: In classic chivalrous fashion. If a woman is in danger, Sanji will drop everything and save her immediately. Examples include running in the ''opposite'' direction of his goal to save the Marine woman Tashigi and deserting a rather important mission on Dressrosa to assist the FemmeFatale Viola.
** [[spoiler: He quickly runs into conflict with his brother Niji over this, as he steps in to protect a helpless chef that Niji was about to abuse. And when he ''does'' brutally beat her behind Sanji's back, Sanji immediately sets out to avenge her.]]
* AlwaysSecondBest: It's a bit of a subtle running gag that he's ''always'' just one step behind Zoro in every area (excluding such obvious things as cooking, leg strength, or directional sense of course). He's got the ''second'' deepest voice in the crew behind Zoro, he's ''one centimeter'' shorter than Zoro, he's ''always'' a little behind him strength wise, he always fights somebody who's a little weaker than Zoro's opponent, and his bounty is well below Zoro's despite the similar threat they pose. It pops up in other ways too, such as how he woke up just ''after'' Zoro did after Kuma attacked on Thriller Bark. Zoro himself, of course, mocks Sanji every time he bests him.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: [[spoiler:Sanji is this to his two older brothers Ichiji and Niji. Not because there's anything actually wrong with ''Sanji'' mind you, but because both of them are massive [[{{Jerkass}} Jerkasses]] with an utter LackOfEmpathy (no thanks to [[EvilutionaryBiologist Judge]]) who think that his noble, heroic qualities are irritating]].
* ArrangedMarriage: To the thirty-fifth daughter of the Charlotte family, Pudding. Their wedding is supposed to be the centerpiece of one of Big Mom's tea parties, and the whole situation is courtesy of his father and Big Mom forming a political alliance. He's not too happy about it, though he still ends up love-struck by his beautiful bride to be when he actually sees her ([[ChivalrousPervert as you might expect]]). [[spoiler: Things go even more sour, though, when it turns out that Pudding is actually a BrokenBird with a sadistic streak and the engagement is a sham- the real purpose is to murder him along with his entire family]].
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: [[spoiler:In Chapter 864, after failing to kill Sanji the first time thanks to [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe some unexpected compliments]], Pudding tries again, insisting that her murderous, sadistic self is her "true" personality unlike the sweet girl Sanji had seen, and rants that she has deceived many people before Sanji in the past. Sanji responds by asking Pudding if she happened to be one of those people, which, although it doesn't make her back down right away, noticeably shocks Pudding into hesitating even more]].
* ArtEvolution: A very subtle version; Sanji's face wasn't quite as round when he [[http://i.imgur.com/GXghVfc.png first came back]] from the {{Timeskip}} [[http://i.imgur.com/ZrJUx4Z.png?1 compared to later on]].
* AssassinOutclassin: [[spoiler: Outclasses ''three'' would-be assassins in the span of a few seconds. First, he causes his [[HoneyTrap fake fiancee]] to have a VillainousBreakdown on the altar right before she tries to shoot him by calling her supposedly horrifying ThirdEye [[FreakyIsCool beautiful]]. Then, after she fails, he [[DodgeTheBullet dodges the priest's point-blank gunshot]] attempt- or at least he would have had the [[ColdSniper cold-sniping]] {{Seer}} Charlotte Katakuri not foreseen this and intervened. Instead, Katakuri tries to kill him by flicking a [[AbnormalAmmo jellybean]] through his [[BoomHeadshot head]] before this can happen... but Sanji dodges ''that'' as well and Katakuri ends up killing the priest instead]].
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Despite the above AlmightyJanitor and below Badass instances, Sanji will likely lose his train of thought if a pretty woman comes into his focus. One instance on the Punk Hazard arc is him chasing to help Nami and Robin but stops when he sees Monet. Not only does he stop, but the Marines who are following him stop as well to comment on how beautiful she is.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Not only is Sanji a brilliant tactician in combat, but his sense of smell along with his cooking skills allows him to produce an exact copy of the recipe for a cake someone else made (complete with seven secret ingredients), just off the smell of the cake, despite being a ''[[UpToEleven smoker]]''[[labelnote: Explanation]] Who in real life are known and proven to have a severely diminished sense of smell and taste due to the poison they're addicted to.[[/labelnote]]
* BadassBaritone: When he's not fawning over women, his voice is the deepest in the crew after Zoro's.
* BadassBeard: He sports a small beard after the TimeSkip.
* BadassFamily: Despite him having cut his ties with them and thus no longer considering them to be his family (and vice-versa, at least in the case of his father and brothers), he ''is'' a biological member of the infamous Vinsmoke family, a royal family of underworld "killers", all of whom who have been shown to be badass in their own right, something that "Black Leg" Sanji, member of the Straw Hat Pirates, in-crew member of the Straw Hat's "Monster Trio", and tactical genius, can also lay claim to.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Quite spiffy looking with that blue/orange pinstripe shirt and classic black suit.
* BadassNormal: Not normal by our standards, but he's the only Straw Hat to not use either a Devil Fruit or a weapon, so he's literally just going with the rest of the crew and fighting with just his own two feet. Despite this, he's one of the three strongest members of the crew.
* BareFistedMonk: Well, it's technically Bare ''Footed'' Monk. He never uses his hands in battle because he needs them undamaged to cook.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He is always annoyed with his lack of recognition, especially since his Wanted poster looked like Duval, and desires to be the most infamous pirate in the world. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that he is the missing third son of the criminal Vinsmoke family, a royal family of assassins, thus making him a prince by birthright and just a few steps in political power below the ''World Nobles''. The Vinsmoke family also consisted of people who constantly abused and bullied him for being weak as a child, which later caused him to run away and become a pirate. Looks like your wish finally came true, Sanji]].
* BeingGoodSucks: [[spoiler: No matter how much he hates his family, who are evil warmongers, mock him as a failure and keep his ParentalSubstitute hostage, Sanji can't leave them to their fate to get killed by Big Mom. Sanji doesn't view them as family, but he will try to save them nonetheless, because he is too compassionate to just run away. Thanks to the help of the Straw Hat-Firetank Pirate Alliance, he eventually succeeds in saving his family]].
* BelatedBackstory: For the longest time, Sanji was just Sanji, much like Nami is just Nami, and the fandom began to think the author had nothing up his sleeve beyond that- he was Sanji, and that was it. No one really expected anything more past that because his initial backstory was deceptively intricate enough as is, but two thing burned at people's minds- he was the only Straw Hat without a personal death under his belt, and he revealed he was not native to the East Blue. Turns out he's kept mum about his surname Vinsmoke and all the bad memories associated with it, [[spoiler:because his own father specifically told him never to mention them ''ever'' again, and indeed, it included the memory of a late mother dying for his sake.]] It just took a certain interest in his familiar background to open the can of worms.
* BerserkButton: Five.
** Never insult his culinary skills or [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dytJmH3GWg steal his dream]] of eating the [[{{Invisibility}} Clear-Clear Fruit]].
** Never suggest that he is incapable of protecting people.
** Wasting food is the ''one'' thing that has made him angry enough to use his fists against someone, especially Luffy. Do ''not'' do it anywhere near him.
** Harming a woman or even ''attempting'' to harm a woman in any capacity is an easy way to get Sanji to kick your ass quickly.
** Don't mention his surname, and/or assume he wants to use it since it reminds him of [[spoiler:his tragic past with his family]].
* BeyondTheImpossible: Let's face it, no remotely important characters in ''Manga/OnePiece'' are remotely realistic, as far as their abilities are concerned.
** But who else goes as far as to perform ''plastic surgery'' in the middle of battle by rapidly kicking their opponent in the face?
** But who else ignites their feet for a special attack without getting burned, while underwater?
** Not to mention running faster than the speed of ''water pressure''.
** While not unheard of, flying in One Piece is a very exceptional skill to have.
** His nosebleeds can actually ''run Chopper out of his spare blood stock for Sanji's type.'' Chopper, by the way, also takes care of ''ZORO'' after fights.
* BigDamnHeroes: "Mr. Prince", followed later by "The Hunter".
** Saving Nami, Chopper and Brook from '''Doflamingo'''.
** Saving Nami, Chopper and Brook ''again'', this time from being trapped in Capone's body.
* {{Bishonen}}: A masculine example, though it gets slightly downplayed after he grows out his facial hair during the TimeSkip with the transition from the thin teenage stubble to a full goatee.
** Zoro calls him "Idiot Lovely".
** [[TheMafia Firetank Pirates]] member Gotti angrily calls Sanji "pretty boy".
** When meeting Sanji's older sister, Brook goes heart-eyed twice and says "So pretty." Shortly after Luffy sees her face and asks "Sanji?!"
* BlueBlood: [[spoiler: He hails from a bloodline which once ruled ''all'' of the North Blue, though he renounced his involvement with his family early in life due to his family's ''horrendous'' abuse of him]].
* BlueIsHeroic: Sanji's [[ColorMotifs main color scheme]] is blue.
* BondOneLiner: Has a habit of giving these after winning major fights.
* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: [[spoiler:Platonic example; in Chapter 843, he turns down Luffy's attempts to bring him back from Totto Land because his abusive family blackmailed him into marrying Pudding, and if he defied his purpose, his loved ones (especially [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]]) will be killed. Luffy understandably doesn't take it very well at all, to the point that he punches him to get him to come back to the crew]].
* BrickJoke: One that took a ''very'' long time, and was almost not certainly planned to be this: in Alabasta, Sanji gives the name "Mr. Prince" to Crocodile as his alias. [[ComicBookTime Two in-series years, and over a decade of real-life time, later]], we find out that he actually ''is'' a blood-born prince of the Vinsmoke family, the rulers of Germa Kingdom and an infamous group of Underworld assassins.
* BrokenTears: [[spoiler: Once, after he beats Luffy up and puts on a JerkassFacade to make the Straw Hats leave Whole Cake Island, which makes Nami ''[[ArmorPiercingSlap slap]]'' him. And once more, when he sees [[BitchInSheepsClothing Pudding]] laughing at how easily she tricked him, how stupid she finds him and how she is looking forward to see his reaction right before she kills him.]]
* BrooklynRage: In the 4Kids dub, Sanji was given a [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV-XdyuQngM&feature=related thick Brooklyn accent and a temperamental personality]].
* ButtMonkey: Aside from Luffy, he's the Straw Hat most likely to be the butt of some joke or run into misfortune; he consistently is beaten up by Nami, rejected by most women, ends up in strange situations, and his quirks and mannerisms are sometimes jokingly mocked by the other Straw Hats when he's not present (aside from [[SitcomArchNemesis Zoro]], [[VitriolicBestBuds who of course]], will do it to his face).
* BurningWithAnger: As a RunningGag he bursts into flames when he's sufficiently enraged. Chopper even says "[[AngstNuke Awesome! He exploded!]]" at one point during one such instance. After the TimeSkip, he's ''weaponized'' it since it reminds him of his TrainingFromHell at the hands of Ivankov.
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler: Sanji clearly has no love for his three quadruplet brothers. It's heavily implied that he fought (and defeated) the youngest, Yonji, as soon as they met up again, with Yonji sporting a disfigured face afterwards. It's later revealed that as a child, Sanji was frequently and viciously bullied by his brothers for being weak and showing compassion towards starving commoners. His older sister, Reiju, who laughed at this in public but showed compassion for him in private, is the only living family member he shows affection for]].
** [[spoiler: Though he hates all of them, he has a particular dislike for Niji, as he specifically notes that only ''Niji'' out of all of them is actually vindictive and petty enough to brutally beat an innocent cook to spite Sanji for defending her. This act practically lowers Niji to a level that's "[[InsultToRocks lower than scum]]" in Sanji's eyes]].
** [[spoiler:Later justified in Chapter 852; before Sanji and his brothers were born, Judge tried to weaponize them by experimenting on them in utero and completely removing their ability to feel compassion and empathy. Their mother, Sora, intervened by taking a drug that reversed gene-altering surgeries, but died saving only Sanji. His brothers can't understand why he still has his humanity and continues to act kind towards others, because they were programmed that way.]]
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler: He calls Judge out ''immediately'' upon seeing him for the first time in at least 13 years since the latter abused him as a child]].
* CasanovaWannabe: The chances of him actually sleeping with anyone he's wooed are practically nonexistent. [[spoiler: Then when the chance comes up after he is paired up with Charlotte Pudding, one of Big Mom's daughters, he turns it down, to the shock of his crewmates]].
* CatchPhrase:
** "Crap" as a prefix (e.g. his nickname for Zeff, "Kuso Jijii", means "Shitty Old Man"). It's almost a tic, since he uses it when describing non-crappy things, like 'dates' with Nami. This pisses her off enormously.
** '''~MELLORINE!!!~''' [[note]](Mellorine is a cheaper version of ice cream that's made from animal/vegetable fat instead of butter. It could be an extension of how he says "Crap" to describe non-crappy things as mentioned above.)[[/note]]
*** For a while after the time skip: "IIIII NEEEEED LADYYYYY!"
* CharacterTics: When under extreme stress, Sanji has been shown to express anxiety by ruffling his hair and/or curling into himself as to bring his head down towards his legs. He was shown to have done the latter as a child while he was trapped on the rock with Zeff, and he did the former once while the Straw Hats were being hunted down by Kuma, but most prominently, [[spoiler:he has done either one of or a combination of both of these tics ''several'' times throughout the Totto Land Arc, the cause of which being the extreme stress he's being put under because of his abusive family, along with their forcing of him into an arranged marriage with one of Big Mom's daughters and all of the consequences that have come of that.]]
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: It's strange to think that he once (in the manga at least) almost shot Nico Robin, albeit an instinctive reaction to Vivi being threatened. [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse What ever happened to that pistol, anyway?]]
** He knows he can't hit her, so he grabbed a pistol hoping it would intimidate her. It doesn't work.
** As for the pistol, either it was just owned by the whole crew or Nami took it or had it given to her, because at one point (at least in the anime), Nami is seen holding it while preparing to fend off a possible attack.
** A different thing is [[HandsomeLech how he used to be able to attract women]]. Very, very weird when you look at his more [[CasanovaWannabe recent]] [[ButtMonkey portrayals]].
*** Actually, it may just be the main cast. Both the [[CreepyCrossdresser New Kamas]] and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.
*** And now, he has actually seemingly succeeded in pulling in a dancer on Dressrosa named Violet; she's actually ''returning'' his advances!
*** It's probably just the main cast (i.e. Nami). The mermaids, minkwomen, and Viola either don't seem to mind him or even find his antics funny/cute. He did creep out the first girls he saw on Sabody Archipelago after those two years though (including Perona).
** Sanji used to be more reserved and often always irritable, now he's not only high-strung, but he goes into goofy states of mind when involved with women. Justified, however; you try living on an island full of [[CreepyCrossdresser transvestites]] who think you're attractive and chase you everywhere you go while having absolutely no contact with real women ''for two straight years'' and see how you behave after that.
** His [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold kindness and altruism]] become highlighted and focused on as defining traits of his in the Whole Cake Island Arc, to the point where his sister considers them to be the most prominent and important aspects of his personality. However, if you look at past One Piece, he wasn't quite as altruistic and forgiving in the past. Though all of this is certainly not ''too'' inconsistent with his character, there is the one egregious matter of how he was ready to abandon the innocent kids suffering under Caesar in the Punk Hazard Arc if it weren't for Nami.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Considering his legs are strong enough to casually kick away large sea monsters, he definitely qualifies.
* ChefOfIron: Of the 'Ordinary' variety, although he names his attacks after food and cooking methods. He is capable of using cooking utensils as weapons with some proficiency, but prefers not to as they are meant for helping people, not hurting them. He NEVER uses food itself as a weapon, and others doing so is one of his {{Berserk Button}}s, since he considers it wasteful.
* ChekhovsGag: Remember Sanji's pervy face while he goofed off with those mermaids several years back? Well, his new Wanted Poster features that exact moment (down to the ''fish that were in the background''), and it ends up becoming a driving factor in [[spoiler: the reemergence of his family]].
* ChekhovsGun: His new bounty poster, the one with a legitimate picture of him reads [[spoiler:"Alive Only" instead of the typical "Dead or Alive" hinting someone powerful doesn't want him dead]].
* TheChessmaster: Sanji isn't just a great martial artist, he's also a genius-level manipulator, able to outsmart brilliant people such as Crocodile. He also shows a habit of playing people like fiddles through the series, usually opting to sabotage or confuse enemies covertly while the rest of the crew handles more direct approaches (such as prior to the start of the Enies Lobby Arc). [[spoiler:This is later justified after the TimeSkip, where the Totto Land Arc revealed that Sanji and his siblings were all trained in military strategy since childhood so they can become brilliant Germa 66 commanders. It's a good thing he ran away and is now on the side of good, because Sanji's presence would spell "[[SpannerInTheWorks instant failure]]" for the [[BigBad villains]]' [[EvilPlan plans]]]].
* ChickMagnet: Funnily and ironically enough, even though he's a CasanovaWannabe most of the time, Sanji ''does'' tend to attract women whenever he manages to act relatively normal (i.e., not outright perverted) for more than five minutes. He's also usually popular at parties.
* ChivalrousPervert: Sanji is this trope so much so that he refuses to harm a woman even if it would cost him his life. Do ''not'' [[BerserkButton mistreat women in his vicinity unless you want him to]] [[UnstoppableRage literally explode with rage]]. Zeff is the reason behind this, literally beating it into his head that he must never harm a lady or he will be a failure as a man.
* CigaretteBurns: On several occasions, he's burned his opponents in the middle of a fight with his cigarette butt. However, he's rarely resorted to this tactic ever since he actually learned how [[PlayingWithFire generate fire]].
* ColorFailure: When he heard Zoro saying he and Duval, whose ugly face matches the drawing from his wanted poster, are 'like two peas in a pod', [[http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/274/7/a/shocked_sanji_by_jasonpictures-d816yud.png he looks offended]], to put it mildly.
* CombatPragmatist: Though he practices an elegant martial art and has a strict code of honor, he's not above [[CigaretteBurns burning his opponents with his cigarette]] to catch them off guard. He'll also occasionally play mind games with his opponent to get them to drop their guard so he can surprise them with a kick, a tactic he's used against Mr.2 and Jabra.
* CookingDuel: Gets into a few in anime {{Filler}}. [[SupremeChef He always wins, of course]].
* CulturedBadass: He's the number one ChivalrousPervert and SupremeChef, who loves to wear nice-looking suits.
* DanceBattler: Most of the Black Leg Style's kicking techniques resemble real life UsefulNotes/{{Capoeira}} moves.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Sanji was born the third son of the Vinsmoke family, a family of royal assassins who once ruled the North Blue (they're trying to fix that). Before he and his (older and younger) fraternal quadruplet brothers were even born, Judge altered their DNA in utero and surgically removed their ability to feel empathy, so he can turn them into the perfect killing machines. Sanji's mother, Sora, who completely disagreed with her husband's plan, secretly ate a drug that reversed gene modifications so she can protect their sons, but unfortunately she was only successful in saving Sanji while Ichiji, Yonji, and Niji have but a shred of humanity left, and died as a result of the drug's effects while Sanji was still young. When Judge discovered Sanji still remained compassionate and physically remained as strong as a normal kid, he forever deemed him a "failure" in his eyes, and let Sanji's brothers viciously bully him for most of his childhood, even telling Sanji ''to his face'' that he isn't worth raising as a Vinsmoke. His only ray of hope, after Sora died, was his older sister, Reiju, who could only help him in private due to her fear of being abused as well. Judge eventually attempted to "start over" by forcing an iron mask onto Sanji and leaving him to rot in the family dungeons, while [[DeathFakedForYou declaring him as "dead" in public]]; Reiju came to his rescue by freeing him, and guided him to a passing cruise ship, the Orbit, while their family was preoccupied with their conquests, telling to find people who love him and never come back home again. Judge found out, but let him go on the condition that he keep his true birthright a secret]]. While working as a ship's cook on the Orbit, the ship was attacked by the pirate "Red Leg" Zeff and his crew. A freak storm occurred during the attack, of which Zeff and Sanji were the only survivors, and both were marooned on an island where they experienced extreme starvation due to little resources. Because Sanji shared Zeff's dream of becoming a chef, Zeff helped him during their time on the island, even sacrificing one of his legs to feed him. Eventually they were rescued, but Sanji's horrific experiences shaped him into the man he is today.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Sanji's [[BadassInANiceSuit stylish suits]] are usually black with a blue (and orange, post-TimeSkip) shirt.
* DeadlyDodging: [[spoiler: He dodges Katakuri's [[ItMakesSenseInContext jellybean shot]] and it ''[[BoomHeadshot instantly kills the priest behind him instead]]''.]]
* DeathGlare: [[spoiler:Gives [[ColdSniper Charlotte]] [[CombatClairvoyance Katakuri]] one after seeing a [[AbnormalAmmo jellybean]] kill the wedding priest instead of him. [[OhCrap He knows what's going on]].]]
* DefeatByModesty: During his (filler) duel against the substitute "Queen" of Kamabakka, he's soon forced to resort only to weak, low kicks because his opponents keeps peeping at his bloomers when he tries to kick him. (Sanji having been forced to wear a dress to get Caroline to fight him.)
* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler:Surprisingly enough, despite a pirate lifestyle being technically more decadent. Not only is he on the receiving end of IHaveNoSon from his completely abhorrent father and is the victim of horrific bullying from almost all of his siblings (except his sister Reiju), but the "family" he absolutely loathes is ''royalty'' with a complete disregard for the commoners and soldiers of their kingdom, and think using said soldiers as meat-shields, even going so far as to win a duel by stabbing at Sanji through one, is '''giving those soldiers an enviable honor.''' Even the worst pirate shown is nowhere near that depraved. Even Kuro didn't think killing his crew was a ''noble and righteous thing.'']]
* DelinquentHair: In the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Red-Hair of Class 3-Sea Time", Sanji sports a curly pompadour that covers his left eye just like his hair did pre-TimeSkip. In said gag comic, he's depicted as a chain-smoking school delinquent.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:In Chapter 845, Sanji crosses this when he believes he is truly out of options in getting out of his ArrangedMarriage and going back to his friends, since one misstep meant his loved ones will die. Pudding decides to call off their wedding for his sake, but Sanji persuades her not to and hugs her while calling his bride-to-be his "savior"]].
** [[spoiler: Gets hit with it even harder when Pudding turns out to be a BitchInSheepsClothing, as he loses the one ray of hope he had left in this situation. Though when he calls her much-hated ThirdEye "beautiful", he sends her into a tearful VillainousBreakdown and leaves her unable to kill him.]]
* DirtyKid: Flashbacks to his childhood years while in Baratie (in Ch. 839) shows that he's been a perv ever since he's still a kid. Zeff repeatedly scolded him for it. The gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Family Time" even depicted him as a middle-schooler who "likes chicks" and goes to the girls' locker room while the girls are undressing to deliver Nami her things she forgot, all while sporting a lewd expression on his face.
* DistractedByTheSexy: He always loses his focus when he sees a pretty woman and he's particularly susceptible to [[HoneyTrap Honey Traps]]. [[spoiler: One egregious example is when he ''knows'' his "fiancee" Charlotte Pudding is really planning to kill him on the altar, but he's so attracted to her that he lets himself get sucked into her flirtations again anyway]]. However, despite these tendencies, he does have a degree of self-restraint when it counts, [[spoiler: and it leads him to ''again'' slip up in regards to Pudding, [[SpannerInTheWorks with unexpected consequences]].]]
* DodgeTheBullet: Like Luffy and Zoro, Sanji is fast enough to dodge bullets ''point-blank''. [[spoiler: Even more impressively though, he can dodge [[ColdSniper Katakuri's]] [[AbnormalAmmo jellybeans]] just as easily despite the fact that said person can ''[[{{Seers}} see into the future]] and [[CombatClairvoyance see his opponents' moves]]''. This implies that Sanji moves too fast for Katakuri to glance into the future in time to counteract him.]]
* DoesNotLikeSpam: According to [[WordOfGod Oda]], he hates the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konjac konjac root]] as it is not nutritious to him.
* DoubleJump: After the TimeSkip, he can replicate [=CP9=]'s Geppou, except he calls it "Sky Walk", and fly; that's what you get for running away from {{Creepy Crossdresser}}s [[TrainingFromHell for two straight years]].
* DramaticSitDown: He does this after [[spoiler:the [[CloneArmy true nature]] behind the existence of the Germa 66 Soldiers]] is revealed to him. Directly beforehand, he claimed to be feeling nauseous, and directly afterwards, he has a CigaretteOfAnxiety to help himself calm down, which leaves the overall impression that the weight of the information that was revealed to him left him on the verge of a panic attack.
* DramaticUnmask: [[spoiler:In Chapter 845, he privately reveals to Pudding how horrible his family is by removing Reiju's facial mask, revealing a horrifically swollen and bruised face. Pudding is so shocked that she simultaneously starts crying and apologizing for inconveniencing him... at least on the surface]].
* TheDulcineaEffect: To the point that he later develops a "damsel-in-distress" sixth sense.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Pre-timeskip, he was just a SupremeChef who happens to be ''really'' good at kicking. But during the timeskip, he discovered Haki and {{Flight}}.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler: Despite their less than amicable relationship, he's not above saving and then teaming up with his father and brothers when surrounded by the Charlotte Family and with both parties in need of some more manpower. He does, however, silently demand that they help his friends with a glare on his face after he frees them, earning an annoyed look from Judge while his siblings comply]].
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Quite a few guys are attracted to him. Duval and the two Fishmen who gave him blood transfusions are a few examples.
** Duval's slip of the tongue reveals he's got a crush on Sanji.
** And he had the drag queens on Okama Island hitting on him and dressing him up for two years. Poor guy.
** Also the [[IncrediblyConspicuousDrag two]] [[CampGay men]] on Fishman Island who gave him blood transfusions.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Knowing what is was like to nearly starve to death [[spoiler:twice]], Sanji will give anyone who is hungry food, be it friend or foe.
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: His attack names are in French.
* ExtremityExtremist: His legs, of course. The explanation is that, though in earlier battles he was using his hands for handstands, he needs his hands for cooking (which, coincidentally, is similar to a principle of UsefulNotes/{{Capoeira}} - "hands are a tool of creation, feet are a tool of destruction" - and he also has some capoeira-esque attacks).
* FakeoutMakeout: With Violet/Viola. It's vague enough that it could be just a hug though.
* TheFarmerAndTheViper: During his introductory arc, Don Krieg was left starving after Dracule Mihawk destroyed his fleet, and Sanji took pity on him by feeding him over everyone's protests. Unfortunately for Sanji, Krieg "thanked" him by attacking him the moment he felt satiated and declared his intent to claim the floating restaurant as his new flagship. Sanji likely knew that this would be the outcome, but having nearly starved to death himself [[spoiler:twice]], he wouldn't wish such a fate on ''anyone''.
* FastballSpecial: His ''Armée de L'air'' combo moves, in which he uses his powerful legs to launch his friends in the direction of the enemy.
* TheFettered: It's strongly implied that Sanji is more than capable of [[spoiler:defeating his entire family, as demonstrated by his offscreen beatdown of Yonji and his battle with Judge (which Judge only won through foul play), but their threats against Zeff and his adopted family keep him from following through]].
* FirstNameBasis: Makes absolutely ''zero'' mention of his surname willingly. It isn't until the Zou Arc that it gets spoken aloud for the first time- and not by him. [[spoiler:That's because he has sworn himself to never speak the name "Vinsmoke" again by his own father's instructions and he bears an undying hatred of the family itself.]]
* {{Flanderization}}: In Sanji's very first appearance, he was able to have actual ''conversations'' with women he was attracted to and attempted to woo. Now? [[LovableSexManiac Not]] [[CasanovaWannabe so much.]]
** He also went from generally suave and occasionally going gaga over women to going gaga by default and violent nosebleeds at worst after the TimeSkip, though this was a result of spending two years on an island full of transvestites.
** He's displayed some signs of ForgotFlandersCouldDoThat in more recent arcs however; though he still freaks out when talking to women far more than he originally ever did, he actually manages to talk like a human being long enough to leave a good impression on the mermaids, Viola, Carrot, and Pudding.
* FlashStep: One of the skills he obtained during his stay on Momoiro Island.
* FlowerMotifs: According to Yuriko Yamaguchi (Robin's voice actress), Sanji's flower is the delphinium, which represents passionate attachment and a huge heart. He is an utter romantic who go's heart-eyed at the sight of beautiful women, and an utterly NiceGuy underneath his [[{{Jerkass}} abrasiveness]]. Ironically, because of the delphinium's toxicity, it means death - he's a SpannerInTheWorks who "kills" villainous plans, and an utter failure when it comes to successfully seducing and forming long-term relationships with women. [[spoiler:It could also reference Sanji's birth family of royal assassins; how his father, Judge, tried "killing" the notion of compassion and empathy by psychologically/physically altering his children; how Sanji's mother, Sora, died trying to save him and his quadruplet brothers from being turned into utterly emotionless weapons; and/or how Sanji nearly starved to death ''twice'', the first time being left to die in the dungeons by Judge just because he was born a "dud" unlike his enhanced siblings]].
* {{Foil}}:
** To Donquixote Doflamingo.
*** Both are powerful, immaculately dressed fighters, with [[BadassNormal Sanji]] being [[KiManipulation a Haki user]] and Doffy being a Devil Fruit user, and they are both extremely talented [[TheChessmaster chessmasters]].
*** Sanji is a walking SpannerInTheWorks who ruins evil plans, while Doffy is a ManipulativeBastard who makes evil plans.
*** Sanji is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who is a PrincelyYoungMan underneath and cares about his TrueCompanions no matter how much he argues with them, while Doffy's [[AFatherToHisMen kind treatment]] of his [[DysfunctionJunction pirate crew]] hides the insane, [[ItsAllAboutMe entitled]], [[{{Sadist}} sadistic]], [[{{Narcissist}} prideful]] scumbag who psychologically manipulates his "family" into serving as his tools and won't hesitate to discard them when it's convenient.
*** [[spoiler:Both are children of royalty who left their cushy lifestyles as kids - Sanji willingly ran away from home (with the help of [[CoolBigSis Reiju]]) to escape a lifetime of abuse, while Doffy was forced to leave Mariejois by his naive father who wanted his family to live with the commoners the World Nobles lorded over. Both also have antagonistic relationships with their fathers and brothers; Judge, as well as Sanji's quadruplet brothers Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji saw him as a weak waste of space for lowering himself to feed animals and display compassion, both of which are frowned upon by the Vinsmokes, and never miss an opportunity to horrifically abuse him. Doffy hates his father for making him leave Mariejois and the perks of being a World Noble to live with "commoners", which eventually drove him to kill him, and also murdered his brother Rocinante/Corazon, who had been secretly opposing Doffy believing he was "born" evil, for siding with the Marines and feeding the Heart Heart Fruit to a then-young Law]].
*** [[spoiler:The early deaths of their biological mothers, [[MommasBoy whom they]] [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas both adored]] became significant turning points in their lives, for different reasons - Vinsmoke Sora pulled a MamaBear when Judge decided to weaponize her quadruplet sons in utero, by secretly ingesting a dangerous drug that reversed her husband's experiments at the cost of her own life, allowing Sanji to "live" as a normal child who would eventually grow up to be the badass we know and love. Doffy's mother, however, died in extremely squalid conditions after her husband decided to make the entire family leave Mariejois, which drove Doffy to "death" - specifically, the act of murdering his father, implied to be because had the family stayed in Mariejois, his mother's illness would have been cured by the World Nobles' advanced medicine]].
*** [[spoiler:Also, while both suffered extreme hardship as children, what prevented Sanji from becoming like Doffy is his mother's aforementioned MamaBear that saved him from being born with utter LackOfEmpathy, and that he was surrounded with people who loved him for who he was and didn't hesitate to discipline him when he misbehaved, instilling in him a strong moral compass. Doffy had no such support; his "caretakers" (his four executives) only followed him around because of his awesome display of Conquerer's Haki, and kept enabling his already bratty behavior and existing god complex on the belief that he was destined for greatness, until both traits grew to epically monstrous proportions.]]
** Later, to [[spoiler:his bride-to-be, Charlotte Pudding. Similarly in the example with Doffy, Sanji's JerkWithAHeartOfGold personality contrasts Pudding's NiceGuy mask that hides the sadistic, homicidal insanity underneath. Both were horrifically abused by their own families for having undesirable traits - the Vinsmokes looked down on Sanji for being a failed, compassionate {{Tykebomb}} while Pudding's family treated her like a monster for having a third eye. Unlike Sanji, who had the support of Reiju, his (dead) mother, and the chefs at Baratie, Pudding literally had no one to turn to, resulting in her completely snapping and becoming the monster everyone claimed her to be.]]
** [[spoiler:He could also count as a foil to Vivi Nefertari, who is also royalty - Vivi's a WideEyedIdealist who grew up in a house full of love, and prefers the diplomatic way to solve conflicts. Sanji, thanks to his experiences of growing up abused and tormented for being weak and compassionate, as well as nearly starving to death twice, is under no delusions that life can be very shitty and that people die all the time.]]
* FoodPorn: Any scene where he's cooking and/or serving food inevitably turns into this, as demonstrated during the filler G8 Arc. Unsurprisingly, it attracts people like [[BigEater Luffy]].
* FoolForLove: Fool? He's a self-confessed ''slave'' to love.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** In the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Detective Loomes" (released in 2011), Sanji was depicted as a ProfessionalKiller who's OnlyInItForTheMoney. [[spoiler:Five years later, Sanji was revealed to be the third son of the Vinsmoke family, a group of royal assassins]].
** Sanji chooses the alias "Mr. Prince" when dealing with Crocodile; [[spoiler:we find out much later that, biologically, he ''is'' a prince of the infamous Germa Kingdom.]]
** No doubt that part of his irritation with "Iron Mask" Duval was [[spoiler: due to Sanji having once been put in an iron mask as a form of torture by his father Judge]]. Combine that with Duval's resemblance to his ugly Wanted poster and it's no wonder Sanji got so mad.
** [[spoiler:In the Totto Land arc, after Sanji (unwillingly) reunites with his family, Charlotte Cracker tells the Sanji Retrieval Team that Sanji will accept his ArrangedMarriage to Pudding and tell his friends to go away, as part of his BreakingSpeech so he can get the Straw Hats to leave. This ends up coming true, more or less, in Chapter 843 when Sanji turns down Luffy's attempts to rescue him, though Cracker didn't factor in the "rejected his friends because his family blackmailed him" part.]]
** Sanji mentions pre-TimeSkip that he was born "up north", likely referring to the North Blue. [[spoiler:He turns out to be right - the Vinsmokes lived there after conquering that territory for themselves.]]
** Sanji lived in East Blue, often called the "weakest" of the four seas. [[spoiler:Fittingly, he was the weakest of ''four'' Vinsmoke quadruplet sons, because despite receiving the same physical/psychological enhancements they did in utero, Sanji ended up being born a normal kid due to a drug his deceased mother took to save her sons from their father. Fortunately for him, [[TookALevelInBadass his weakness didn't stick]]]].
* ForWantOfANail: [[spoiler:Sanji not becoming an utterly remorseless {{Tykebomb}} like his quadruplet brothers hinged on his mother's kindness. Had Sora not made the choice to sacrifice herself to save her sons after Judge experimented on them in utero, Sanji wouldn't grow up to be a SpannerInTheworks and a major problem for villains. And more specifically, the entire Vinsmoke line would be rendered extinct by the Charlotte family/Big Mom Pirates, because Sanji didn't make the necessary friends and allies in order to save them. He wouldn't be able to make [[BitchInSheepsClothing Pudding]] reveal her BrokenBird side and perform a HeelFaceTurn, because that relied on ''kindness alone''.]]
* FourIsDeath: [[PlayingWithTropes Played with.]] [[spoiler:He's biologically the fourth child of the Vinsmokes, with his sister Reiju, and his elder quadruplet brothers Ichiji and Niji preceding him, in that order. He's also on the outs with his family so bad that his father faked Sanji's death in an attempt to throw away a "dud" and start over with a clean slate.]]
* FreakyIsCool: [[spoiler: Sanji genuinely finds his [[HoneyTrap "fiancee"]] Charlotte Pudding's ThirdEye beautiful and tells her so on the altar even though he knows she's trying to kill him. Pudding - having been called an ugly freak by others her whole life and [[FreakinessShame never hearing such a thing before]]- has a VillainousBreakdown at this display of immense kindness and can't go through with killing him. Furthermore, she actually ''falls madly in love with him'' not too long afterwards, perhaps being the first woman to love Sanji back in a romantic sense.]]
* FurAndLoathing: The "Mugiwara Theatre - Detective Loomes" gag comic has Sanjeen (Sanji), a [[SharpDressedMan sharply-dressed]] ProfessionalKiller who wears a fur scarf and is suspected by the titular Detective Loomes (Luffy) to have killed the rich man Bronegie (Brook) for his money. He's actually innocent.
* GeniusBruiser: Is very smart as well as strong and extremely fast.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Possibly. In one SBS Question Corner, the crew is asked what kind of season on what kind of island they like best. Sanji's reply is "I like Robin on a Nami island!"
* GoingNative: He does this in the island of drag queens, though not of his own will. The natives put him in a dress that he didn't want to wear.
* GoodIsNotNice: Downplayed. Possibly as the result of being raised by an entire crew of rowdy [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold jerk chefs with hearts of gold]], he tends to be one of the meaner or ruder crew members towards the locals the Straw Hats meet (the men only of course) or prioritize the safety of the crew over ''all'' else. He does have his heart of gold, but he does have his meaner moments. One good example would be how he was ready to abandon the kids suffering under Caesar (Granted, because he thought taking them along was too reckless) if not for Nami changing his mind.
* GratuitousFrench: Most of his attacks are cooking terms in French.
** Which wasn't kept in the 4Kids dub, instead giving every attack a corny food pun.
** The French attack names were reinstated for the Funimation dub.
* GreenEyedMonster:
** [[DownplayedTrope Played]] for laughs when he learns about [[LadyLand exactly where]] Luffy got sent by Kuma.
** Also played for laughs is his reactions to Zoro being AlwaysSomeoneBetter every time he pulls off something cool or claims he's the best... only for Zoro to call bullshit.
* GuileHero: Pretty good at making strategies, this trait was notably seen in the Alabasta as "Mr. Prince". [[IShallTauntYou With the amount of taunting]] and misdirection that went [[MagnificentBastard Crocodile's]] way, I think it's pretty safe to say he was the closest thing to a rival {{Chessmaster}} (after [[ReverseMole Nico Robin]]) in that arc.
* HadToBeSharp: [[spoiler:His siblings are SuperSoldiers. Sanji was intended to be like them, his brothers in particular, but because his dead mother, Sora, secretly took a gene modification-reversing drug in an attempt to preserve her sons' humanity, only Sanji showed that he was not much more than a normal kid. However, his experiences on the Grand Line as a pirate had toughened him to the point that he could easily defeat Yonji.]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Sanji is the only Straw Hat with blonde hair and while he may be a [[HandsomeLech pervert]] and a [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold bit of jerk to his male crew members]], he deeply cares for every single member and will lay down his life for each of them. [[spoiler:His kindness is the trait that his sister Reiju admires most about him, as it is a constant reminder that their mother's HeroicSacrifice to save Sanji and his brothers from becoming Judge's {{Tykebomb}}s was not in vain]].
* HandsomeLech: At first, his perverted tendencies were accompanied by women actually finding him charming, but later on, [[CasanovaWannabe his advances are always met with rejection and/or physical abuse]]. [[ForgotFlandersCouldDoThat This eventually goes back the other way, however]]. The [[CreepyCrossdresser New Kamas]], Mermaids, Viola, Minks, and [[spoiler: Pudding]] all take a liking to him ([[spoiler: Pudding actually falls in love with him, in fact]]).
* HarsherInHindsight: An InUniverse example. [[spoiler: Nearly starving to death on an island at 10 years old is bad enough by itself, but the real tragedy is that this happened after Sanji had already fled from the same fate once; that is, having been left to waste away in a dungeon by his own father at only 8 years old. It's lucky, though, that Zeff's kindness gave him a chance to survive]].
** His chain-smoking habit seems to be a coping mechanism to deal with all the shit he went through as a little kid [[spoiler:including being subjected to horrific abuse by his birth family and nearly starving to death in the family doungeons for the first time]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: He shuts down emotionally about halfway through the Totto Land arc upon realizing that there's essentially no way out of the situation, first deciding to forget about his aspirations with the crew to marry Pudding and then, after finding out she's no good, deciding to just let himself be killed. Thankfully, Luffy snaps him out of it with a good [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan whack to the face]], eventually]].
* HeroicRROD: Relatively minor example, but there have been a few instances in which the force behind his kicks has been detrimental to himself, mainly after already taking a beating.
* HeroicSacrifice: Sanji tries to pull one after Zoro offers his life for Luffy's to Kuma. "Tries" being the operative word because Zoro knocks him out before he can go through it.
** [[spoiler: He does another one when he sacrifices himself to save Nami, Chopper, and Brook from Capone Bege]].
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: Sanji's childhood in Baratie was revealed to play this trope straight, with [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]] using lots of physical punishment to turn him into a SupremeChef who WouldntHitAGirl. [[spoiler: Sanji's childhood with the Vinsmokes, however, is revealed to be a horrible, horrible aversion - the difference is that Zeff genuinely cared for Sanji behind his insults and hard hands, while Sanji's birth father Judge and his fraternal quadruplet brothers mistreated him because they only saw him as a weak waste of space]].
* HonorBeforeReason:
** Having nearly starved to death [[spoiler:twice]] as a kid, death by starvation is a fate he literally wouldn't wish on his worst enemy; if someone is starving, he'll feed them without exception.
** Due to a "strict upbringing" thanks to Zeff, he won't hit a girl, even to save his own life or anyone else's [[spoiler:because men not hitting women is a natural law that existed since the time of the dinosaurs]]. Nami [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] how stupid this is on a practical sense, despite being an admirable trait.
* HopelessSuitor: He seemed like this back when Nami was the only girl around he could try to woo most of the time. This changed once other ladies joined the crew and it became more and more apparent he'd hit on anything with shapely hips and a nice rack (though given ''this'' series, those two criteria apply to about 95% of the post-pubescent girls the Straw Hats encounter). Nami is still the primary source of his attention, but by no means the only one.
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:He proclaims that Pudding is his only "ray of hope" left after he's dragged into the mess that is the ArrangedMarriage between him and her and the implications thereof. But then he overhears her conversation with Reiju, where it's revealed that Pudding has concealed her true nature the whole time - one of a cunning, sadistic ([[BrokenBird and completely broken]] BitchInSheepsclothing who plans to have him killed during the wedding.]]
** However, things get better later on: [[spoiler: Pudding ''actually'' falls in love with him, and furthermore, becomes and invaluable asset in helping the Straw Hats escape from Whole Cake island.]]
* HotBlooded: Usually when the ladies are in danger, he gets so HotBlooded that he actually [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PGMyg5hY04 bursts into flames]] for comedic effect. It's also the author's explanation for him being able to pull off Diable Jambe, breaking the laws of physics in the process. ItRunsOnNonsensoleum indeed.
* IconicOutfit: His very first black suit with the blue shirt and tie as well as his first TimeSkip suit with the orange shirt. Like Luffy, his outfit contributed to his In-Universe nickname, "Black Leg".
* ImAHumanitarian: He once threatened Absalom by saying he'd ''cook'' him, saying that given how many animals are part of him, he'd make "decent mince-meat". (He was ''probably'' bluffing, but given how much the two hate each other, it's hard to tell.)
* InASingleBound: He can jump ''very'' high, best seen when he defeats Satori in the Skypeia Arc ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLgUt4MLsOI here]]). He can also do a WallJump and, after the Timeskip, the DoubleJump.
* IncendiaryExponent: Weaponized, via his ''Diable Jambe'' technique.
** A Post-TimeSkip cover seems to imply that he went to PlayingWithFire as well. Which, of course, is later confirmed for all intents and purposes.
* InformedAttribute: His [[spoiler: father, Judge]], mentions during their fight that he taught Sanji how to sword fight as a child, wondering why he's only fighting with kicks. This is of course justified, as Sanji then tells him that he'll only use his hands for cooking, which he has mentioned before.
* InLoveWithLove: Practically oozes this trope as part of his ChivalrousPervert personality.
* InsultToRocks: [[spoiler:After his brother Niji beats up a family cook to spite him for standing up for her in front of his family, Sanji is infuriated to the point where he can only bring himself to call Niji "the shit beneath [scum]."]]
* {{Irony}}:
** Before the TimeSkip, Sanji always expressed annoyance over the lack of recognition that he receives, when it came to the bounties issued for the Straw Hats, ''especially'' when his own bounty was released, and it was just a poorly drawn poster of him. [[spoiler:This is all the more funny, or just curious, when you consider that his family are world-famous assassins. Accordingly, when that information is discovered, his wanted poster has a more flattering image (at the very least, an actual photo of him), and his bounty is considered only valid if he's captured alive]].
** [[spoiler:Flashbacks reveal Sanji was the weakest member of his family, causing him to be ostracized and abused by them. Come the present day, when he finally meets up with them again, he's strong enough to hand Yonji his ass]].
** The "Mugiwara Theatre - Detective Loomes" gag comic released in 2011 depicted Sanji as a ProfessionalKiller who is OnlyInItForTheMoney. [[spoiler:Not only does he hail from a family of royal assassins, he absolutely ''hates'' his family and wants nothing to do with them]].
** [[spoiler:For all of his biologically family's insistence that their MightMakesRight beliefs makes them "proper" royals and that Sanji is a disgrace to their name, it's the gentlemanly ''Sanji'' who acts like a royal should. The irony is completely lost on them (except for [[TokenGoodTeammate Reiju]]). Also ironic, he's the only one of Judge's children to have inherited Judge's hair color.]]
** [[spoiler: Sanji finally getting a real picture for his Wanted Poster like he always wanted results in something he ''never'' wanted to happen, which is his family finding him.]]
** Both Sanji's unique hairstyle in the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Family Time", as well as his [[PeekABangs eye-covering]] [[DelinquentHair pompadour]] in "Mugiwara Theatre - Red-Hair of Class 3-Sea Time", turns out to be ''very'' similar to [[spoiler:his younger fraternal quadruplet brother, Vinsmoke Yonji, who resembles him in all but hair, as well as his older brother Vinsmoke Niji. The kicker? [[CainAndAbel They absolutely hate each other]].]]
** [[spoiler:His father, Judge, as well as Sanji's younger and older quadruplet brothers, completely disdains acts of kindness and mistreats anyone who shows it. Sanji, TheUnfavorite, would end up saving his family from being killed by the Charlotte family, all because despite the horrible shit he went through at the hands of of his father and brothers, he still couldn't bear leaving them to such a horrible fate.]]
* IronicHell: Blasted to an island of drag queens at the end of Sabaody and forced to join in. Kuma must have a twisted sense of humor... Also see TrainingFromHell below.
* IWantThemAlive: For some reason, the Marines have him registered as 'Wanted Alive' rather than 'Dead or Alive' like the other Straw Hats; his bounty of 177,000,000 is ''only'' valid if so. [[spoiler: This might be because the Vinsmoke family are world-renowned assassins and not people you want to get on their bad side by executing one of their estranged children.]]
* JawDrop: [[spoiler:When his brother Yonji shows him Germa 66's secret cloning labs, Sanji responds with complete shock]].
* JerkassFacade: [[spoiler: Since he's being blackmailed by his family and Big Mom, he puts one on in order to get Luffy and Nami to forget about him and move on when they come to rescue him. He takes it ''really'' far too, cruelly insulting his friends nonstop and then brutally beating Luffy until he knocks him out. It actually works on Nami, who angrily disowns him, but Luffy sees right through it and makes him cry when he ''still'' refuses to turn his back on him]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's often a {{Jerkass}} to the male members of the crew ([[DoggedNiceGuy The females]], however...), but he still loves and respects them as friends. Despite his flaws and rough exterior, he can also be really nice to others as well. Because he nearly starved to death [[spoiler:twice]] as a child, he immediately sympathizes with anyone who went through the same thing, as he thinks ''no one'' should deserve such a fate.
* JizzedInMyPants: He does the nosebleeds version of this trope. After spending 2 years on an island full of Transvestites, it's become rather easy to set him off.
* KiAttacks: Post time-skip, he has awakened Haki. He seems to specialize in the Color of Observation. [[spoiler:He also showcases Armament Haki later on, during his fight against his father, Judge]].
* KingIncognito: Sanji is revealed to be [[spoiler:the third son of the Vinsmokes, a royal Underworld family of assassins]]. What this means will be further investigated, as [[WordOfGod Oda stated]] that post-Dressrosa arc will focus a bit more on Sanji.
** To elaborate; [[spoiler: Sanji is actually ''a really, really big deal''. Not only is he rightfully a prince, but he hails from a family that has enough political pull to attend the Reverie, is feared worldwide for their brutality, can manipulate HQ Marines to do their bidding, has an Emperor interested in their services, and once ruled over the ''entire'' North Blue in the past -- effectively meaning the Vinsmokes are only a step or two below the World Nobles when it comes to power. And he gave it all up. His sister Reiju scoffs at him for choosing the "poor" life as a pirate over a prince, though he's unmoved by her criticism and she probably didn't mean it.]]
* KnifeNut: Sanji firmly believes that kitchen knives should not be bloodied in battle, as they are sacred instruments meant solely for the preparation of food. When fighting an opponent whose armor and weapons were made of food, though, Sanji decides that using knives [[AntiArmor to get rid of the armor]] would be no different from using knives to prepare a meal and displays an incredible knife-fighting style.
* KnightInSourArmor: [[spoiler: Despite all the ''horrible'' things his brothers and father have done to him, he still ultimately can't bring himself to just let them die and was prepared to risk his life to save them from Big Mom even though it almost certainly meant death. Thankfully, Luffy assures him that he and the crew will back him up no matter what.]] Also, he takes this view on deceitful women as well; no matter how evil they are or how badly they hurt him, he sticks to his values regardless and refuses to harm them- even if it means death.
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler:Invoked, and averted. Before Sanji and his (older and younger) fraternal quadruplet brothers were born, their father, Judge, attempted to weaponize them by altering their DNA and completely removing their empathy in utero so they can become the perfect {{Super Soldier}}s upon birth. Sanji's mother, Sora, tried to protect them by secretly ingesting a drug that reversed gene modification surgeries, but only succeeded in protecting Sanji, while Ichiji, Yonji, and Niji only have a tiny shred of humanity left. Unfortunately, the very fact that Sanji retained his compassion in a family that believed in MightMakesRight made him the sole target of horrific abuse and mistreatment at the hands of his brothers and father.]]
* LadykillerInLove: [[spoiler: While he ''did'' turn down Charlotte Pudding at first, he seems to genuinely like her as a person and, if not for the terrible circumstances he's in, would probably marry her in a heartbeat. The end of chapter 845 is all about it.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Invokes a positive variant on Reiju after finding her battered and psychologically tormented by Pudding; after an entire childhood of having Reiju dress up his wounds that resulted from both Germa's TrainingFromHell and his brothers' NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, Sanji is the one who helps Reiju heal this time by promptly calling for a doctor, who gives her the medical attention she needed.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgEbda2tNEw Sanji Eyecatcher.]]
* ALessonLearnedTooWell: At a young age, Zeff constantly told and berated him that no matter what, to always be courteous to women. Unfortunately, Zeff's conditioning worked too well as Sanji was unwilling to fight back against Kalifa.
* LethalChef: [[spoiler:He used to be this as a child, with his clumsy attempts (among other things) resulting in extremely bad-tasting food. His sick mother Sora's caretaker Époni was disgusted upon sampling Sanji's dishes and wanted to throw them away, but Sora not only ate them, she praised Sanji's cooking and requested that only he cook for her from now on. Years of practice and help from Zeff at the Baratie would later turn Sanji into the present-day SupremeChef]].
* LetsMeetTheMeat: [[spoiler:When his family meets up with Big Mom for lunch, Sanji discovers that the food in his prepared "meals" are sentient and constantly singing about how wonderful they taste, and beg him to eat them. As a SupremeChef, this understandably freaks him out]].
* LightningBruiser: Of the Hard-Hitting-Speedster variation, as he's the second fastest member of the Straw Hats while his physical power is roughly the same as that of Zoro and Luffy.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: He's the complete opposite of his JerkAss [[TheSocialDarwinist father]] in every way, despite having [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold his own flaws]].
%%* LovableSexManiac: Emphasize on ''Sex Maniac''.
* LoveCanMakeYouGonk: He can make some pretty strange facial expressions when he's gushing over pretty women.
** The ''Yellow'' databook reveals that Attach, the photographer hired by the Marines to take photos of the Straw Hats for their wanted posters, was always trying to catch Sanji striking a cool pose, but every time Sanji would instead swoon over women and look ridiculous. When the guy finally got the perfect picture, [[CameraObscurer he forgot to take the lens off]]. Eventually he got tired of it and settled with a picture of Sanji looking goofy.
* MadeOfIron: He can withstand the sea pressure 5000 meters underwater, has survived massive explosions without protection, and basically ate a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Dusb9BuBac kamehameha]]-esque attack ''point-blank'' without dying, among other things. Even in his introductory arc, he fought on just fine even after getting his ribs broken.
* MafiaPrincess: [[spoiler:Sanji is revealed to be a literal ''Mafia Prince'' due to the Vinsmoke family being an infamous group of royal Underworld assassins and military commanders with enough political clout to have Big Mom, one of the four Yonkos, to be interested in an alliance with them. He also plays it straight [[AbusiveParents for extremely]] [[BigBrotherBully justified reasons]]]].
* ManIFeelLikeAWoman: When Law puts his heart in [[spoiler:Nami's body, Sanji can't resist the urge to peep at or feel him/herself up.]]
* ManInTheIronMask: A ''very'' tragic example. [[spoiler:When Sanji was just 8 years old, his father, Judge, extremely displeased with how Sanji was born a "dud" despite receiving the same physical/psychological alterations as his quadruplet brothers in utero, had his son thrown in the dungeons with an iron mask on his face and pubically declared dead so the Vinsmokes could start over with a "clean slate". Fortunately, his older sister, Reiju, freed him and helped him run away to East Blue]].
* MarshmallowHell: Has received this twice in the Fishman Island arc, both times from beautiful mermaids, [[HandsomeLech much to his delight]].
* {{Megane}}: Sometimes wears glasses, much to the fangirls' joy!
* MistakenForGay: By a whole flock of crossdressers.
* MrFanservice: Unfortunately for straight male ''One Piece'' fans, looking for art of him on the internet will turn up pages and pages of HoYay and Bishonen pictures with Zoro. And unfortunately for him, none of his fan girls in real life can reach him through the computer screen.
* MuggleBornOfMages: [[spoiler:[[DownplayedTrope Is this to a degree]]. He and his siblings were all genetically enhanced, but he was the only one not to develop any sort CharlesAtlasSuperpower as the result of his father's training and genetic enhancements, because his mother, Sora, in a desperate gambit to save her then-unborn quadruplet sons from becoming emotionless weapons, took a drug that made Sanji a normal kid, but not his brothesr as she intended. He was [[TheUnfavorite treated horribly]] as a result and eventually ran away.]]
* MusclesAreMeaningless: His torso became fairly well built after the time-skip, developing more defined abs than he previously had; but his overall physique remains very slim, with his limbs actually being just about as skinny as Nami's limbs. But, regardless, he can still send men twice his size and muscular-build flying with a single kick and launch giant monsters into the air like nothing. Interestingly, while other characters frequently [[LampshadeHanging notice Luffy's oddly powerful muscles]], nobody seems to call Sanji out on this one.
* MysteriousPast: For years, the story never actually directed attention to Sanji's past before the Cook Pirates incident. All that was known is that he was born in the North Blue and worked on a cruise liner (all the way in the East Blue) at age 10. [[spoiler: Eventually, it's finally revealed that he is the third son of the Vinsmoke family, an Underworld group of royal assassins who are also commanders of the evil army Germa 66 and former rulers of the ''entirety'' of the North Blue]].
* NeckLift: In his first appearance, he does this to Fullbody after having first beat the ''absolute shit'' out of him, the cause of which being Fullbody showing disrespect towards and ''wasting'' food. This establishes Sanji as being a highly-principled and undeniably badass but ''very'' hot-tempered person who holds the highest degree of respect for food and whose biggest pet peeve is the wasting of such. This also serves to establish that Sanji's outer persona belies the true nature of his more intricate, complex character.
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: He reveals he's big on this in his fight with Absalom; about 80% of the beating he takes in that fight is a result of trying to keep the unconscious Nami out of the way of stray attacks.
* NervesOfSteel: [[spoiler:Despite [[TraumaCongaLine being pulled through the ringer]] and suffering ''two'' {{Despair Event Horizon}}s during the Totto Land Arc, Sanji pulls through, if only for the sake of his friends and the wellbeing (and well-stomach) of Luffy.]]
* NiceGuy: What he is at the core, if you get past the {{Jerkass}} parts. Although very abrasive and harsh (especially towards the guys of his crew), he is very compassionate with a strong moral compass. In particular, he always finds time to help those who are starving, even if they are bad guys, because he believes no one should go through such a thing after experiencing the same thing [[spoiler:twice]]. He's also quick to help the ladies and refuses to retaliate against them even in self-defense [[spoiler:even if they're evil.]] [[spoiler: It's also the reason why he's the BlackSheep of the Vinsmoke family because unlike his [[AbusiveDad father]] and his [[BigBrotherBully brothers]], his kindness was strongly inherited by his mother who saved him during her pregnancy when his father feeds her the drug to strip her all of her son's empathy permanently by taking the antidote which only works on Sanji successfully while it also fails to cure all of her brothers]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Sanji didn't know it, but [[spoiler:having Duval as his {{Doppelganger}} gave him protection from his abusive family, especially his father Judge who had been tirelessly searching for him with less than benevolent intentions in mind after Sanji ran away]]. Fixing Duval's face resulted in the Straw Hats gaining an ally, but that also meant [[spoiler:Sanji's family were able to easily find him now when new bounties were posted. [[FridgeHorror Imagine if Sanji was found by Judge before the Sabaody Arc happened]]]]...
* NiceShoes: Always wears black dress shoes, used to make his kicks even more powerful. He needs them to avoid AgonyOfTheFeet, too, as seen in the second ''One Piece'' movie.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: In an SBS in vol. 68, Oda [[WordOfGod confirmed]] that Sanji was modeled after Creator/SteveBuscemi as Mr. Pink from the movie Film/ReservoirDogs.
* {{Nosebleed}}: It happens so much during a period of shock after being separated from women for two straight years, that he actually needed a blood transfusion.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown:
** [[spoiler:He would constantly get these from his older and younger fraternal quadruplet brothers as a child, due to Yonji, Ichiji, and Niji being complete assholes who see him as a weak waste of space. The only reason why he kept coming back from those beatings is his older sister Reiju's medical care]].
** He would later deliver one himself [[spoiler:to ''Luffy'' of all people as a part of his BreakHisHeartToSaveHim plan, since he knows that the only way to spoiler:keep the Straw Hats (and Zeff) safe from Big Mom and Germa 66 is to make sure they turn on him. And knowing how stubborn Luffy]] is, he attacks him at ''full power'' and beats him into a bloody mess. For his efforts though, Luffy, being [[{{Determinator}} Luffy]], gets back up after being briefly knocked out and declares his resolve to get him back anyway.
* NotHyperbole: In the "Thriller Bark" arc, Sanji claimed that one day, he'd be the most infamous member of the Straw Hat crew. For a while, it seemed like just a delusion made up by his [[SmallNameBigEgo ego]], [[spoiler:but then, in the Zou arc, we find out he wasn't kidding as he's actually a member of the infamous Vinsmoke family]].
* NotQuiteFlight: Sometime during the two-year timeskip he taught himself CP-9's Geppo, renaming it "Sky Walk".
* NumberTwo: He and Zoro tend to be the voices of reason and initiative in the face of a crisis. When half of the Straw Hats stayed on Dressrosa to settle things with Doflamingo, Sanji took leadership of the other half and headed to Zou, even fighting off Big Mom's pirate crew in the process.
* NoLastNameGiven: For a very long time, starting in his mid-childhood, he only went by the name Sanji. He disowned any and all connection to the surname Vinsmoke because of all the horrible memories attached to it [[spoiler:and because his own father told him to never make mention of them again if he was indeed serious about cutting his ties for good.]]
* NumericalThemeNaming:
** [[spoiler:Shares this with his older and younger siblings Reiju, Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji. He's "Sanji", "San" being the Japanese word for three and a reference to the order he was born in among the five of them. His name is also a pun on "three o'clock". The number three also represents social alienation - he was his family's [[TheUnfavorite least-favored]] child and was constantly abused for being weak as a kid]].
** His name could also refer to how he's the third member of the "[[LightningBruiser Monster Trio]]" and how he always fights the third-most powerful enemy in battles.
* OffScreenMomentOfAwesome: Sanji gets a lot of these. Whenever one of his friends is wondering out loud where he is exactly, it's usually because he's saving the day somewhere else.
* OhCrap:
** Usually calm and composed, he had an epic one [[spoiler:when he realize who exactly are the inhabitants of Momoiro Island]].
** [[spoiler:Seeing his eldest fraternal quadruplet brothers Ichiji and Niji for the first in years since running away caused him to tremble. Seeing how Ichiji and Niji were able to frequently overpower him during Sanji's childhood bullying, it's justified]].
** [[spoiler:[[http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/4/4c/Sanji_learns_he_is_about_to_be_married.png/revision/latest?cb=20160829075300 His face when he reads a marriage announcement letter that reveals his family connections]] says it all]].
** [[spoiler:Judge notes that Sanji turned paler than usual after threatening to kill [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]] in order to force his compliance with his marriage to Pudding]].
** [[spoiler:He also shows this expression when he sees Luffy coming towards him while he's being carried by Germa 66 towards Big Mom's castle. He's definitely conflicted over what to do.]]
* OneHeadTaller: He's a head taller than Pudding, as shown when they hugged.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** When Luffy points out the very harsh, but necessary truth that it's naïve to hope that all people involved in a war will survive, Nami gets angry at Luffy for being so blunt and not considering Vivi's feelings. It's extremely telling that ''Sanji'' is the one to tell Nami to shut up and not cut off Luffy. Usually, he would ''never'' show agreement with his male crewmates if he can please his female crewmates instead, but in this situation he apparently agreed with Luffy so much that he forgot his principles.
** In the Post-Enies Lobby arc, when Zoro is completely adamant that Usopp not be allowed back into the crew until he apologizes for disrespecting their captain. When Nami protests that Zoro is being too harsh, Sanji actually speaks up for the first time to say that, to his own chagrin, ''Zoro is absolutely right''. The fact that Sanji openly sides with ''[[VolleyingInsults Zoro]]'' over ''[[MsFanservice Nami]]'' says a lot about just how strongly he must have felt about the issue.
** Luffy, Nami, Chopper, and Brook are noticeably shocked when [[spoiler:they learned he turned down marrying Pudding, an attractive young woman]], for their sakes.
** As of Chapter 843, he turns down Luffy's attempts to [[spoiler:rescue him from his ArrangedMarriage and attacks him when he insists]]. Considering his UndyingLoyalty to his Straw Hat friends, this is really out of character for Sanji, though it's justified due to [[spoiler:his being blackmailed]].
** In the pre-timeskip movie ''Anime/BaronOmatsuriAndTheSecretIsland'', Sanji [[TookALevelInJerkass denies Zoro food just because the latter wasn't watching him fight the rival chef]], when it's shown that he would never deny anyone food no matter the circumstances. [[spoiler: It's a sign that [[BigBad Baron's]] plan to split up the Straw Hats so he can feed them to [[FoulFlower Lily]] was working.]]
* OutOfFocus: He, Chopper, Nami, and Brook during the second half of the Dressrosa Arc fighting Big Mom and her crew. They were absent from the story for more than a year and a half in the real world before reappearing (from December 2013 to July 2015). Oda himself later acknowledged this by flipping the setup where those Straw Hats came into the forefront while the rest went on the back burner and making the next big swing in the story all about him, deeming it the "Year of Sanji".
* PeekABangs: His left eye has always been covered by his hair, though WordOfGod said that it was perfectly functional under there. He's even held a pair of binoculars up to it before. Later on, he switched the bangs to the other side, revealing that both his eyebrows swirl in the same direction. [[spoiler:It's a trait that he shares with his sister and fraternal quadruplet brothers, and inherited from his dead mother, Sora.]]
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Both he and Pudding would be thrilled to be married to each other if it wasn't for the fact that Sanji would have to give up being on Luffy's crew, and possibly the dream of finding "All Blue."
** [[spoiler: This turns out to be subverted though when it's revealed that her entire character was a lie. After quite the DarkAndTroubledPast, Pudding became an accomplice in Big Mom's plans against the vinsmkes, willing to murder him in the wedding and follow it with his family AND friends' murders.]].
** [[spoiler: Ironically, she does fall in love with him after their "engagement" falls apart]].
* PersonalityPowers: He fights by kicking people, which is less barbaric than punching people, which also results in him becoming a DanceBattler, which also fits his (mostly) refined and cultured personality. Giving him [[PlayingWithFire fire powers]] was also appropriate since he is HotBlooded (when he isn't being TheChessmaster and a SpannerInTheWorks) ''and'' a SupremeChef who wants to cook even better once he finds the All Blue. His "Sky Walk" ability, {{Flight}} represents him running away from the okamas in Momoiro Island for most of the 2 years he's there.
* PlayingWithFire: His "Diable Jambe" technique involves lighting his effing leg on FIRE, [[FrictionBurn via friction]], and attacking with it. Interestingly, while Oda joked that his Hot Blood is what allows him to do it, it seems to be turning into a true ability, with him bursting into flames during his anger and characters commenting on it on enough occasions to make one wonder if it was just a joke or not.
** Confirmed to be canon in chapter 646. Sanji, [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum in some kind of way]], can actually ignite his entire body on fire by "thinking of those 2 years in hell" and then transfer that fire onto his opponent with a kick.
** This actually makes sense (or at least as much sense as you would expect in the world of One Piece). After all, Zoro's Asura technique is made possible through the use of his fighting spirit. Who's to say Sanji can't make flames via the same principle? This power of fighting spirit is very similar to the already established power of Haki, aka Willpower.
* PornStash: Apparently, he keeps tons of dirty magazines in his locker (along with a few books on seafood).
* PrettyBoy: He's a [[MrFanservice refined, handsome man]]. This gets explicitly lampshaded in chapter 825, in which [[spoiler: Gotti]] calls him a "pretty boy."
* PrincelyYoungMan: You could sort of consider him one, not to much by virtue of him thinking he's a prince, but the fact that he treats Nami and Robin like princesses and sort of thinks of himself as their knight. [[spoiler:Later played straight (literally!) when his status as a Prince of the Germa Kingdom is revealed]].
* PunnyName: His name is a pun on the way the Japanese say "3 o'clock". However, the word Sanji can also refer to something that is a terrible, horrible accident that makes one want to avert their eyes and break out the BrainBleach. Veeeerry appropriate. [[spoiler:Chapter 812 reveals that he's the third son of the Vinsmoke family, adding to the puns, as Sanji can mean "third son."]]
** [[spoiler: Though it's not exactly a pun, it is a funny coincidence that a boy from the "Vin-SMOKE" family grew up to be a chain smoker]].
** [[spoiler:"Vin" is French for "wine", which means Sanji's family name is a play-on-words that describes a certain wine flavor (smoky wine). Considering he's a SupremeChef...]]
* RaisedByDudes: He was raised primarily by men who taught him to cook and fight. Which makes his foul mouth obsession with women a bit more... understandable. [[spoiler:The obsession with women is later revealed to be a {{Shared Family Quirk|s}} with the Vinsmoke family, though the foul mouth still seems to be from the chefs at Baratie]].
* RealityEnsues: Having too much {{Nosebleed}}s at once, especially in great quantity like Sanji did in the presence of mermaids, can result in severe blood depletion and the need for a transfusion.
* RedBaron: His epithet, "Black Leg", comes from the kick-heavy fighting style Zeff taught him as well as the fact that he wears a black suit while kicking his foes to a pulp. [[spoiler:His epithet, besides his compassion, is another thing that sets him up as the WhiteSheep of his family - the Vinsmokes' Germa titles are written in katakana, and all designate their choice of weapon followed by their personal color (Poison Pink, Sparking Red, Electric Blue, and Winch Green); Sanji's pirate name "Black Leg" is the reverse of the Germa naming scheme, written in kanji like the rest of the Straw Hat monikers, and also a nod to his adoptive father and mentor - "Red Leg" Zeff.]]
* RedOniBlueOni:
** Zigzagged with Zoro. When compared to Zoro, Sanji's the Red Oni in that he is very romantic and prone to fits of poetic and flowery speech when describing the things he loves (i.e. Nami and Robin) and his ultimate fighting style relies on getting so emotional he bursts into flame. However, some of his most successful moments have been when he's kept a cool head and done something strategic instead of flying off the handle and getting into a fight (see Alabasta and Skypiea, where his machinations did more to stop the BigBad's plans than a fight would have). Zoro on the other hand, is a [[TheStoic stoic]] swordsman who usually maintains an icy calm even when fighting, but when suitably provoked he can become a BloodKnight.
** [[spoiler:He's also the Red Oni to his eldest brother Ichiji's Blue, though inverted with the colors (Ichiji wears red, Sanji wears blue) and downplayed as Sanji ''can'' act calm when it's required. Compared to his other brother [[HotBlooded Niji's]] explosive temper, though, Sanji may be the Blue Oni to Niji's Red.]]
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: [[spoiler: He's the third son of the Vinsmoke family, who are not only North Blue royalty, but a family of underworld ''assassins'', making him a [[MafiaPrincess Mafia Prince]] of sorts.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Gives one to his entire family after they admonish him for defending a lowly cook, calling them out on their appalling behavior as royals (though it was more directed at his father and brothers than his sister, who was also in the same room as them). Judge's response is to blackmail Sanji into obedience by threatening the lives of the Baratie cooks, especially [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]]]].
* TheRunaway: [[spoiler:Of the "Abused Runaway" type. Despite being automatically a prince and royalty by birthright due to being a Vinsmoke, Sanji ran away to East Blue as a child due to his family's (save for his sister Reiju and deceased mother Sora) utterly '''''horrendous''''' treatment of him]].
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler:As much as he hates his father and brothers, Sanji simply can't bring himself to leave them to die at the hands of Big Mom. Luffy's perfectly fine with helping him save them though. Due to his chivalrous nature, he also saves Pudding despite her treatment of him, and tries to talk her out of villainy. It works, as Pudding falls madly in love with him and decides to help him and his friends out in return for showing her compassion for the first time.]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He ditches [[spoiler:his family after enduring almost an entire childhood of their abusive behavior, with the help of his older sister, Reiju, who was secretly his ally while he lived at home]].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Usopp's Sensitive Guy whenever they get scenes together.[[spoiler: However, it might come as a surprise to know he had this dynamic in childhood with his brothers as the Sensitive Guy- and they bullied him mercilessly for it. Even in present day, he comes off as this when contrasted to their complete LackOfEmpathy and callousness]].
* SharedFamilyQuirks:
** [[spoiler: All of his older and younger siblings share his [[HandsomeLech perverted tendencies]] (his quadruplet brothers ogle [[MsFanservice Nami]] whenever they see her, while it's gender-inverted with Sanji's sister Reiju who enjoyed giving a KissOfLife to Luffy a little ''too'' much).]]
** [[spoiler:Also most his family members share his preference for using powerful kicks, particularly Reiju, Judge, and Niji (though the later also used punches)]].
** [[spoiler:His older quadruplet brothers Ichiji and Niji also share his cool head and [[HotBlooded temper]], respectively. The difference is his brothers share a LackOfEmpathy and are {{Royal Brat}}s, which makes their traits less sympathetic compared to Sanji]].
** [[spoiler:Both he and Reiju inherited their compassion from their deceased mother Sora, but this made Sanji a target for abuse from his brothers and father, while Reiju hid it [[StepfordSmiler with smiles]]]].
** [[spoiler:Sanji's youngest quadruplet brother Yonji referred to him as a "bastard" in his debut chapter. "Bastard" is also one of Sanji's go-to insults]].
* SharpDressedMan: A black suit is his standard form of attire, usually only wearing more casual clothes during transitions between arcs.
* ShooTheDog: He views [[spoiler:leaving Luffy and the Straw Hats behind while on Totto Land]] as this, given that [[spoiler:his abusive family blackmailed him into marrying Pudding]]. Luffy disagreed.
* ShootTheHostage: He threatens to shoot [[spoiler:Caesar Clown if Bege goes after his friends, knowing full well Bege cannot shoot him because someone wants him alive and mostly unhurt]].
* SiblingYinYang: [[spoiler:Yonji is a pervert like Sanji, but he lacks his chivalry. Ichiji has Sanji's cool head, but he has a LackOfEmpathy, with a tendency to KickTheDog with [[DeadpanSnarker scathing remarks]]. But Niji, out of all his siblings, contrasts Sanji the most - aside from having an explosive temper, Niji is spoiled, ungrateful, unappreciative towards food, and has none of Sanji's compassion towards commoners and women]].
* SitcomArchNemesis: This is largely what Zoro is to him despite being in the same crew (similar to Buggy and Shanks' relationship when they were on Roger's ship). These two never miss an opportunity to belittle, one-up, or humiliate the other.
* SirSwearsALot: To be expected, as he was raised by sailors, and inherited their colorful vocabulary (see his {{catchphrase}} above). The English anime translates this by having him swear among the most out of anyone in the crew, "bastard" being a particularly favorite word of his.
* SmokingIsCool: Due to FCC regulations strictly banning smoking in shows intended for children, both English dubs had to cover this up when they aired on TV. They did it by either editing his cigarette out altogether (Creator/{{Funimation}}), or by turning it into a lollipop ([[Creator/FourKidsEntertainment 4Kids]]).
* SoProudOfYou:
** Sanji's asshole quadruplet brothers hate him for being a weak waste of space and not toeing the party line. So when Sanji decides to act like a [[{{Jerkass}} "proper" prince]] towards the [[TrueCompanions Straw Hats]] (who were trying to rescue him from an ArrangedMarriage with Pudding), they laugh and smile in approval, even though they're unaware of his [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim true]] [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies reasons]].
** [[spoiler:On the flipside, as Chapter 852 reveals, unlike the rest of the family, Reiju has ''always'' been proud of Sanji whenever he displays acts of kindness, unlike the rest of their family, because she saw Sanji's compassion as proof that their mother's sacrifice was not in vain. In fact, seeing Sanji do so is the only time her [[StepfordSmiler fake smiles]] turn into genuine ones. The only time she expressed [[DisappointedInYou sad disappointment towards him]] is when she overhears the entire conflict mentioned in the above point]].
* SpannerInTheWorks: ''VERY'' frequently. His unknown at the time identity allowed him to rescue the crew from Crocodile's death trap in Alabasta, he trashed Eneru's airship long enough for Luffy to get back into the fight (and stop him from putting all his focus into destroying Skypiea), and his closing the Gates of Justice not only allowed them to escape Enies Lobby without being pursued, but significantly slowed down the pursuing marines during the chase itself.
** [[spoiler:In the Whole Cake Island arc, although he loathes almost all of his Vinsmoke relatives with a passion (the feeling is mutual), Sanji's compassion drives him to save his family from Big Mom. This ends up throwing a big wrench in Big Mom's KillEmAll wedding plans - [[BitchInSheepsClothing Pudding]], who was supposed to kill her groom-to-be once they reached the altar, has a VillainousBreakdown because Sanji [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe complimented her third eye]] ([[AllOfTheOtherReindeer something no one had ever done before]]), leaving her [[BrokenTears crying]] and unable to kill him as planned. Katakuri's attempts to kill Sanji with a jellybean ends up narrowly missing its target and killing the priest when Sanji bends down to try comfort Pudding, with the commotion at the altar alerting the Vinsmoke family's suspicions of Big Mom. MassOhCrap ensues.]]
* SpiderSense: One of the many people who've awakened the Observation Haki, which works like spider sense. [[WordOfGod Eiichiro Oda]] claims that he specializes in this type of Haki.
* StealthExpert: Barring Nami, Robin, and Brook (who have abilities directly related to hiding themselves), Sanji is the sneakiest member of the Straw Hat crew. He escapes surveillance so often that it becomes a major plot point several times throughout the series.
** In Alabasta, bounty-less Sanji was the only Straw Hat to avoid detection by Baroque Works. This proves to be instrumental in freeing Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Smoker from Crocodile's BondVillainStupidity.
** Sanji's counterpart in Thriller Bark was the Invisible Human of the Suke-Suke fruit.
** Sanji's mug shot isn't obtained by the '''World Government''' until the Straw Hats enter the New World, despite personally infiltrating a Cipher Pol train and fighting in Enies Lobby. Also, when he disappears during the Buster Call, it ends up being what allows the Straw Hats to escape.
** [[spoiler: In Totto Land, Sanji escapes the near constant surveillance of the Big Mom Pirates to secretly formulate an assassination plot on their own territory.]]
* StepfordSmiler: As of chapter 848, he's of the [[spoiler:Depressed]] type. [[spoiler:Despite being completely distraught and depressed over the situation at hand himself, Sanji, in a bid to not upset Pudding any further than his situation already has, and as a coping mechanism, forces himself to assume his "usual" persona of "a cook in love". To this end, he puts up a front of being his usual girl-crazy, heart-eyed self, after having talked himself into it and having ''practised it alone in his room''. Later in the chapter, Sanji is picking flowers while having a big smile on his face, only for his smile to get even ''bigger'' in the next panel, suggesting that he has just berated himself for not appearing as cheerful as he thinks he needs to be, and has immediately taken steps to rectify it.]]
* TheStrategist: Proven to be one of his defining characteristics at least twice in every arc from Alabasta on. [[spoiler:This was the result of being trained by his biological father Judge to become a Germa 66 military commander from a very early age]].
* StrongFamilyResemblance: [[spoiler:All of his Vinsmoke siblings resemble him to some degree, bearing his trademark swirling eyebrows and PeekABangs. Reiju and Yonji in particular resemble Sanji the most, with Reiju looking like the end result if Sanji was turned into a woman, while Yonji is Sanji's splitting image (save for the hair) and has his perverted tendencies. In the case of Sanji and his brothers, it's later justified with the reveal that they're fraternal ''quadruplets'', born on the same day, which is why they resemble each other so closely]].
* StupidGood: A variation - he's not completely stupid (in fact, [[TheChessmaster he's far from it]]) but thanks to nearly starving to death as a kid, Sanji has no problem feeding a starving man. Even if that starving man and his crew of equally-starving pirates are obviously planning to attack him afterwards.
** Also, he ''absolutely refuses'' to harm women physically as a part of his chivalrous code, even if there's a serious risk they could kill him. Even Nami seems to think it's admirable, but she also points out how stupid it is in practice.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Notable considering half the Straw Hat crew have Devil Fruit powers and can't swim at all. Way back in the Arlong Arc, he held his own against a Fishman ''underwater'', and he was down there for several minutes.
** He has an underwater version of [[DoubleJump Sky Walk]] called "Blue Walk" and is said to be as fast as a fishman, which is pretty fast considering they're the ''third fastest swimmers in the sea''.
** When diving for Kinemon's torso, Sanji straight up mentions that he is the fastest swimmer in the crew by a lot, even without Blue Walk. Considering that Zoro remained silent when he normally calls bullshit on anything Sanji does that isn't remotely true, one can take that small piece of information as true fact. (Though he's really only comparing himself to [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative Nami, Usopp, Zoro and Franky]], everyone else just sinks, and Franky's half metal).
* SuperReflexes: Like many characters, he has them and developed them through sheer [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower training]].
* SuperSoldier: [[spoiler: He and his siblings were genetically enhanced in childhood by their father to become these and lead the Germa 66's armies. However, Sanji showed no signs of improvement despite his genes supposedly being successfully modified on paper, leading to him being bullied and beaten by his father and brothers.]]
* SupremeChef: Makes some of the best damn food you'll find on the Grand Line. And he joined the crew to fulfill his dream of finding some mysterious and awesome ingredients that can only be found in the All Blue, so he can cook even ''better''. A lot of the FoodPorn in the show can be contributed to him, ''especially'' in the G8 filler arc.
* TakeMeInstead: During the Thriller Bark arc, to save Luffy from Kuma, and prevent Zoro from sacrificing his life. It doesn't work, as the latter knocked him out for the exact same reason.
* TakenForGranite: PlayedForLaughs. After his two years in "Hell", he is so susceptible to women's looks that just LOOKING at Hancock does this to him. Shirahoshi as well.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Tries doing it on [[spoiler:Pudding during the tea party, casually dodging her bullets as he makes her question herself. It actually works too; Pudding falls in love with Sanji and pulls a HeelFaceTurn shortly thereafter]].
* TeamChef: It's a good idea to not insult his cooking skills. He'll beat you up for it. And probably suspend your eating privileges.
* ThatManIsDead: [[spoiler:He abandoned the Vinsmoke family name after leaving his siblings and Judge behind. He makes it clear that Vinsmoke Sanji, the weak little boy they so often abused, "died at sea"]].
* ThemeTwinNaming: [[spoiler: Well, theme ''quadruplet'' naming, anyway. "San" and "Yon" are the Japanese words for 3 and 4 respectively, as reference to the order he and Yonji were born in. Combined with the "ji" at the end of their names, they're also puns on "three o'clock" and "four o'clock". Reiju also shares this number theme naming despite not being one of the quadruplets.]]
* ThrowTheDogABone: After two painful years on an island of transvestites, Sanji finally meets mermaids, and they ''like'' him. He's even able to resist nosebleeds for a while to play with them.
** Similarly, Oda occasionally decides to spare him and let him at least touch a woman, and on two separate occasions he has had his face stuffed in into a girl's breasts. Nosebleeds ensue.
** You can probably consider it a near miracle that [[spoiler: his wife to be, Pudding, is ''actually attractive''. In this case though, it becomes YankTheDogsChain when it turns out she's a massively broken BitchInSheepsClothing who faked being in love with him]].
*** [[spoiler: This eventually goes back the other way and Sanji is once again thrown a bone; showing Pudding genuine kindness and love despite everything she did causes her to fall madly in love with him- perhaps the first time his feelings for any woman have ever been fully reciprocated.]]
* TrainingFromHell:
** Underwent this as a child [[spoiler:alongside his siblings, to shape them into the super soldiers their father wanted them to be. However, Sanji failed to do any progress, despite having been genetically enhanced like his siblings]].
** Underwent another one training to be a chef in the Baratie under Zeff, which was equal parts learning how to cook as it was seeing if he could survive the kicks of the "Red Leg". Ironically, it was under ''this'' training that developed his CharlesAtlasSuperpower, [[spoiler:and not the SuperSoldier training with the Germa 66]].
** During his two years of training in IronicHell over the TimeSkip Sanji has become so fast that he can now [[LightningBruiser move at an absurdly fast speed UNDERWATER while maintaining his superior kicking power]]. He got the skill from running away from transvestites on that scary island for two full years. He also gained the skill to run on air. So, yeah, he can fly.
* TraumaCongaLine: To sum up, he was defeated by Kuma, sent on a island full of Drag Queens, is accidentally mistaken for a crossdresser by the inhabitants, chased along the whole island, forced to fight the "Queen" in dress and make up, humiliated and tricked into becoming a crossdresser himself. Thankfully, he got better.
** [[spoiler: The Whole Cake Island Arc has been one long trauma line for him, starting with getting forced into an arranged marriage, beat up by his brothers, put under the threat of having his friends and parental figure Zeff murdered if he doesn't comply, and ends up slapped and disowned by his beloved Nami. Even worse is that his fiancee - who ''appeared'' to actually like him and provided a HopeSpot - is really a shattered BitchInSheepsClothing who plans on murdering him, and that her family intend to kill both his biological and adoptive family and friends anyways]].
* {{Tykebomb}}: [[spoiler: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He and his siblings were genetically enhanced after birth and raised to be physically superior to the average human in order to lead the Germa 66's armies to their greatest victories. However, in Sanji's case, the modifications failed thanks to the drug his mother took in a desperate attempt to save him and his brothers, but the drug only worked on him for some reason. As a result, he didn't grow any stronger than your average human child]].
* UndyingLoyalty: No matter how much he argues with them (especially the men), Sanji deeply treasures the Straw Hat crew and will do ''anything'' for them when push comes to shove. [[spoiler:Not even the chance of being married to the beautiful Charlotte Pudding (who's also a SupremeChef) and being able to live like a prince as a member of the royal Vinsmoke family is able to deter him]].
* TheUnfavorite: [[spoiler:His father and brothers see Sanji as this, due to being a compassionate weakling as a child who refused to abide by the code of MightMakesRight, to the point of inflicting constant physical abuse on him. It got to the point where his father [[IHaveNoSon wrote him off as dead]] and [[DeathFakedForYou left him in the dungeons to rot while passing off his absence as a training-related accident]], and his brothers were completely fine with it... except for [[CoolBigSis his sister]], [[BigBrotherInstinct who freed him and helped him run away to East Blue]].]]
* UnusualEyebrows: His eyebrows twirl into two big ol' spirals on the ends; and, predictably, they are often the source of ridicule. Oddly enough though, both of his eyebrow spirals curl ''to the right'', meaning his eyebrows are asymmetrical on his face. Which may explain why he chooses to hide one of eyes at all times [[PeekABangs with his hair]]. (pre-TimeSkip he covered his left eye, post-Time-skip it's his right). [[spoiler: The swirly brows seem to run in his family, to boot. It should be noted, however, that his family members' brows all swirl in the opposite direction of his]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: [[spoiler:While Sanji is still compassionate and willing to help others, he showed it more often when he was younger. His abusive family and nearly starving to death twice hardened him, unfortunately]].
* VerbalTic: Since a young age, Sanji has a habit of saying "shit" or "shitty" when describing something. While the Japanese word for feces, "kuso", is not specifically an expletive, Sanji's manner of speech makes the term sound brash. For example, he might call a person he especially does not like a "shitty bastard" or something along those lines (such as his personal nickname for Zeff, "shitty geezer"), but he also described something pleasant to him, like being alone with Nami, as "shitty fantastic" and "the shitty best". In the [=FUNimation=] dub, this habit is downplayed to swearing that is less offensive.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He's not shy about insulting or arguing with the male Straw Hats, especially Zoro, but he's also willing to go quite far in defending them despite claiming to only care for the women.
** And before he even joined, there was his relationship with Zeff. The two slung so many insults at each other and got in so many fights that the other cooks at Baratie were surprised to find out how much the they actually cared about each other.
* VolleyingInsults: Quite often with Zoro, as well as his surrogate father Zeff.
* WeaksauceWeakness: [[WouldntHitAGirl He refuses to harm women in any way]], though he is capable of blocking their attacks. This causes near-fatal problems during the fights with Bon Clay and Kalifa. Nami even criticizes him on this trait.
* WhatTheHellHero: Upon learning about Jimbei indirectly causing Arlong to rule the East Blue and terrorize Nami, giving her severe emotional trauma and turning her into a BrokenBird, Sanji understandably gives him an earful for it.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark:
** In the Thriller Bark arc, despite their rivalry, Sanji steps up and offers to sacrifice his life for Zoro when [[NoNonsenseNemesis Kuma]] threatens to kill him.
** Push comes to shove [[spoiler: when his rich birth family returns to take him back, and they try wooing him with promises of [[SexSlave "personal maidens"]], money, and marriage to the beautiful Charlotte Pudding. Sanji, against even his crew's expectations, refuses it all and stays absolutely set on leaving with Luffy and all of his friends.]]
** [[spoiler:Part of why Sanji was bullied by his brothers as a child was because he was willing to cook and serve food to others behind the family's backs]].
* WhiteSheep: Despite being a pirate, Sanji displays much more integrity and nobility than his royal family of assassins, as seen when he calls a portrait of his father conquering four North Blue kingdoms tasteless. [[spoiler:This even stems from his childhood. Sanji was an outcast in his family because he was weak[[note]]Despite having the same genetic enhancements as his other siblings, he somehow always fell behind when he trained, which irritates them[[/note]] and compassionate towards others[[note]]Judge dismissed Sanji's compassion as "trying to hold the legacy of someone already dead" (that is, his mother).[[/note]]]].
** [[spoiler: Sanji's WhiteSheep status is also reflected in his alias compared to those of his siblings. The Vinsmokes' Germa titles are written in katakana, and all designate their choice of weapon followed by their personal color (Poison Pink, Sparking Red, Electric Blue, and Winch Green); Sanji's pirate name "Black Leg" is the reverse of the Germa naming scheme, written in kanji like the rest of the Straw Hat monikers, and also a nod to his adoptive father and mentor - "Red Leg" Zeff.]]
* WhyCantIHateYou:
** [[spoiler:When he encountered Judge in the middle of his escape as a child, even after all the abuse he had suffered, he was still devastated to hear his father's complete apathy toward him leaving the family. However, he eventually got over it by adulthood, as he admits to himself that he feels nothing but hatred for Judge in the present day.]]
** [[spoiler:Despite overhearing Big Mom and Pudding's plans for the Vinsmokes as well as Pudding's true evil nature, Sanji is still attracted to Pudding because... well, he's [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji]]. [[SpannerInTheWorks And that's later quite the plot point]].]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Sanji appears to have some fear or aversion to insects and spiders. During the crew's search for the South Bird, he continually backed away from the various insects in the forest to the point he was afraid to touch them.
* WideEyedIdealist: [[DownplayedTrope Solely when it comes to women and nothing else]]; Sanji's views on the ladies are quite rose-tinted and naive, and he's prone to trusting any woman who acts nice to his face or returns his advances. He even proclaims that he would never doubt a woman's tears and is willing to forgive the lies and actions of any woman who wrongs him. TropesAreTools, however, so this is usually [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]] by being shown in a neutral light and presenting both the positive and negative outcomes of this trait of his. However, it's shown in a decidedly negative light in the Tottoland arc, where his patience is pushed to its limit as [[spoiler: his trusting nature leads to his heart being broken in an exceedingly cruel manner by a very sadistic, manipulative woman- the likes of which he had never had to deal with before on such a personal level]]. However, in a true testament to his willpower, he sticks to his morals even after this; [[spoiler: [[FreakinessShame instead of showing any anger towards her, he compliments]] [[BrokenBird Pudding's]] ThirdEye and still calls her beautiful, which causes her to ''genuinely'' fall in love with him- reconstructing the trope and proving that Sanji's chivalry ''can'' work against all odds.]]
* WifeBasherBasher: Abusing women (even evil ones) in front of Sanji is a '''bad''' idea; as in an [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown "ending up on the ''wrong''-side of a one-sided ass beating"]] bad idea.
* WingdingEyes: Prone to developing "heart" eyes whenever he's swooning over a lady.
* TheWorfEffect: Really the only reason he and Vergo fought was to build up the latter's threat level.
** Before the timeskip, Sanji is easily defeated by Ivankov to put his power in perspective.
** The only worse offender of this than Zoro is Sanji. It happens to him once an arc, including freaking FILLER arcs. Notable examples include Eneru (couldn't even hit him once despite wearing shoes with rubber soles), Smoker (in the manga), Arlong, Blueno (after revealing Robin's intentions, Sanji had no use for holding back and still got beat), and Absalom (possibly a deconstruction, since it was really just a penguin fighting as Sanji, though the other zombies note he's quite powerful).
** In the Dressrosa arc he suffers this from BigBad Donquixote Doflamingo. While DD acknowledged his as being strong, Sanji seemingly did no damage with all his attacks and was immediately bested by his Parasite technique.
** [[spoiler:Sanji got beaten by his father during the fight with him. Downplayed in that Judge merely knocked him unconscious with his electric blast attack; Sanji's mostly unharmed otherwise]].
* WorfHadTheFlu: He might have won against Gin, but the wounds he sustained while Pearl beat him up while he was unable to retaliate due to Zeff being held hostage immobilized him at a crucial moment.
** He also presumably would have put up a better fight against Arlong (if not outright won) if he hadn't been badly injured in his previous battle.
** His fights against Eneru and Smoker were lost causes due to their Logia powers and his inability to use Haki before the timeskip.
** When fighting Absolam he was handicapped by having to protect Nami.
** In his fight with Vergo, which ended in more of a draw then a defeat, he didn't use Haki or Diable Jambe aside from his initial attack.
** [[spoiler:He's quickly taken down by Niji in their first fight, but it should be noted that Ichiji distracted him for a second and Niji managed to sneak up on him while he was looking away, and both Niji and Ichiji threatened Red Leg's life if he dared to fight back.]]
* WouldntHitAGirl: He always absolutely ''refuses'' to hit a lady no matter the circumstances- even if the lady in question is evil and/or trying to kill him. His strong feelings on this stem from his mentor Zeff; Sanji originally had no problem with hitting women as a child, but when he told this to Zeff, he got a kick to the head and Zeff's stern disapproval in response. So, in addition to his love for women, Sanji also sticks to this so strictly because he doesn't want to disappoint Zeff and become a man that he wouldn't be proud of. This trait even carries onto video game adaptations, with the ''[[VideoGame/OnePiecePirateWarriors Pirate Warriors]]'' games in particular programming his attacks always avoid hitting and/or affecting female enemies[[note]]Crew Strikes let him call in someone else to defeat them for him, but it's still such a problem the game flat-out warns you if he tries to start a mission containing female enemies[[/note]]; however, he ''can'' be made to hit a female enemy in some games, but he will [[ApologeticAttacker apologize with each attack]].
* YouCalledMeXItMustBeSerious: Nami usually refers to him as "Sanji-kun". [[spoiler:In Chapter 844, after Sanji puts on a JerkassFacade to protect both her and Luffy from being killed by his family and Big Mom, Nami (who's unaware of his true reasons) gives him an ArmorPiercingSlap and disowns him while calling him "Sanji". It's after this that Sanji sheds BrokenTears]].
* YouOweMe: [[spoiler: While he does save his {{Jerkass}} father and brothers from certain death at the hands of the Charlotte family alongside his [[WomenAreWiser sister]] [[TokenGoodTeammate Reiju]], he immediately lets them know that they're indebted to him and ''damn sure better pay him back'', silently demanding that they save his friends after they get caught. Judge glares at him in annoyance, but Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji quickly comply without complaint and ''actually listen to Sanji'' for once]].
* YoureNotMyFather: [[spoiler:Sanji understandably refuses to acknowledge his relationship with Vinsmoke Judge and considers Zeff as his true father]].

-->''"Let's go everyone...! Back to the sea of adventure again! I came to take you home!"''

The Straw Hat Crew's first ship, a caravel-class ship designed by Merry in East Blue, which later became a gift for Kaya to give to the Straw Hats (then comprising of Luffy, Zoro, and Nami; Usopp comes with the ''Merry'') to reward them for taking out Captain Kuro and his Black Cat Pirates. Over time, the ship came to be loved by the crew as a home and as a friend, so much so that it literally took on a life of its own and became just as much a part of the crew as any of them.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Sheep. Sheep are symbols of purity and loyalty, traits that Merry certainly has as a member of the Straw Hat pirates. Because she has ram horns, rams can apply as well, as they symbolize fearlessness--when it comes to helping her friends, Merry can be quite the {{Determinator}}.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Merry's [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Klabautermann Klabautermann]], a ghostly manifestation of a ship's spirit that is [[LoveImbuesLife born out of its crew's love for it]]. Unfortunately, a Klabautermann being seen by its crew is a sign that their ship will soon meet its doom; Merry's gets seen in the middle of the Skypiea Arc, and true to form, she is immobilized due to accumulated, ''terminal'' damage to her keel once the Straw Hats reached Water 7 at the beginning of the Enies Lobby Arc, and by the end of the arc she is finally laid to rest.
** The special for her reveals she lives on in the form of the Klabautermann, quietly and cheerfully watching over her crew on the Thousand Sunny.
* BigDamnHeroes: She comes all the way from Water 7 to aid the Straw Hats and co. in Enies Lobby, her timely surprise appearance allowing them to escape certain doom at the hands of the Buster Call fleet that had finally cornered them.
* CoolBoat: Merry might not be as visually impressive as some of the other ships in the series, but she definitely fits. How many sentient pirate ships can you name?
* CoveredInScars: It accumulates a ''huge'' amount of damage:
** Railing sliced apart by Johnny upon attacking the ship thinking he could score bounties, who later made amends by repairing it himself.
** Figurehead broken upon crashing into Laboon, then put back on with tin plates.
** An explosion in the kitchen from Apis's [[LethalChef horrible cuisine]] (non-canon).
** Luffy breaks off the mast and uses it as a weapon against Laboon, again put back together with tin.
** Wapol eating one of the sides of the ship, which was crudely repaired with wood.
** Pierced through by Hina's attack ships, which drive giant stakes into the ship designed to sink vessels, resulting in a bunch of new tin plates to mend the damage.
** The rudder lever once broke from the force of the water current and trying to steer it.
** Floorboards totaled more times than one can count.
** Leaks aplenty more times than one can count.
** The ship being torn apart by the force of the explosion that launched it out of Ape's Concert (non-canon; used to illustrate the damage the anime failed to acknowledge, which had slowly accumulated in the manga)
** Bow cracked open by Bellamy when he cruelly used the ship as a springboard, technically attacking a member of the crew along with the Saruyama Alliance and getting Luffy riled up to the point of facing him personally. It also rendered the ship inoperable for awhile. The alliance repaired the damage by partially rebuilding the site of the breakage with metal plates while reconfiguring the ship for flight. They also took off the patches where Wapol ate part of the ship and faithfully reconstructed it for real.
** The newly-added chicken wings breaking off upon a harsh landing in the skies.
** Shura burning the ship with his Heat Lance, causing severe damage to it. Repaired by the Klabauterman with tons of patch-ups here and there and had its configurations for flight taken off, but it was now nearing the end of its life.
** The landing it made from a 30,000 foot drop, implied to have busted its keel and sealed its fate.
** Crashing into the train tracks of the Sea Train (if the former incident ruin the keel already, this certainly did, as the place where the keel damage occurred is on the front of the ship where it ran aground on the tracks- if the damage already was there, this only served to make it worse).
** Franky tearing off part of the ship in an attempt to dismantle it and force Usopp to acknowledge it was beyond recovery and they'd be better off trying to salvage what they could. [[BerserkButton Usopp immediately lunged at Franky and attacked him before he could do any further harm.]]
** Finally breaking in half from the strain of enduring Aqua Laguna and travelling all the way out to Enies Lobby in what would be its final voyage. It was then incinerated in a Viking funeral.
* ADayInTheLimeLight: Merry gets her own TV Special, the ''Episode of Merry: The Tale of One More Friend''.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: She was reconfigured to look like a chicken after being made able to fly. Unfortunately, the wings broke almost immediately and the rest of the modifications apart from the braces used to repair where Bellamy trashed her were removed by the Klabautermann, who decided to return to her old look.
* {{Determinator}}: Water 7's dreaded Aqua Laguna and a violent rainstorm didn't stop her from coming to her crew's rescue in Enies Lobby despite her physical form being barely held together by Iceburg's temporary fixes. The Buster Call fleet comprised of the Marines' most immense and armed-to-the-teeth battleships didn't even make her flinch (not that they managed to hit her in the first place). The only thing that did stop her was [her keel (the ship equivalent of the human body's spine) finally giving in to all the damage it sustained over the past several arcs, causing the ship to essentially break ''in half''. Even then, said damage didn't appear to have any effect on Merry until after the Straw Hats had another ship to carry them back to land, suggesting Merry was keeping herself seaworthy through nothing but sheer force of will.
* FinalSpeech: She delivers one to the Straw Hats in order to assure them that she neither blames them for her death nor has any regrets, as she had been truly happy throughout the time she was with them.
* GoOutWithASmile: Despite being technically a ship with a drawn smile, the happy way she talks to the Straw Hats during her VikingFuneral can make the scene be interpreted as a beloved crew member dying with no regrets, with a smile on her face.
* IRegretNothing: She truly doesn't regret sailing with the Straw Hats despite the tremendous crap she is subjected to as a by-product of their adventures, and tells them as much during her VikingFuneral. Her only regret, according to her, was not surviving long enough to carry her friends through more adventures.
* LoveImbuesLife: Franky explains that a ship's Klabautermann is manifested out of a crew's love for their ship, though if it's ever seen by its crew, it's a sign that the ship will soon meet its end.
* MortalWoundReveal: An anthropomorphic variant. It suffered a breakage to its keel, the part of the ship that is literally its backbone. When that part breaks, the ship loses its structural integrity, and the only solution is to rebuild from the ground up. Usopp refuses to believe this until Franky physically throws him into the water, where Usopp is able to see that her hull is indeed in a grave state. Eventually, it becomes painfully obvious when the Merry breaks in half from the accumulated damage to its keel, leaving it genuinely irrecoverable and the Straw Hats only one choice-to put her out of her misery.
* OhCrap: Not even she was immune to this during the end of the Skypiea arc, when the Straw Hats returned to the Blue Sea... by being dropped 30,000 feet from the White Sea. Everyone's eyeballs popped out, including hers!
* OutOfFocus: In spite of her importance, she ultimately fades into the background as the majority of a given arc will generally take place on the particular island said arc is centered on where Merry can't follow for obvious reasons, particularly since the series tends to focus on intense personal battles between powerful individual people, rather than the ship-to-ship combat of actual real-life naval warfare.
* PerpetualSmiler: Well, if she had a face, it would have been smiling. As it is, we have to settle for her figurehead's drawn smile.
* RealityEnsues: After all the crap Merry went through (including blasting up and then falling down 30,000 feet), she was bound to suffer irreparable damage.
* ReplacementGoldfish: The Mini Merry II is her spiritual reincarnation. This was also Usopp's initial attitude to getting a new ship to replace the Merry, as he treated her as one of their friends, and took great offense to the idea of abandoning her, especially someone built by Kaya's servant.
* RuleOfSymbolism: The damage done to her keel is drawn and shaded much like wounds would be on a person.
* SapientShip: Implied at first, but then shown explicitly when she sails to Enies Lobby without a crew.
* TearsFromAStone: Technically, it was a splash from a wave, but it happened during the climax of the fight between Luffy and Usopp, as a way to underline the tragedy the crew was facing.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Merry is the only crew-member that never complains or causes trouble and is self-sacrificing and conscientious to a fault, so of course she's the crew member who dies.
* UndyingLoyalty: The motivation for the feats described in her BigDamnHeroes and {{Determinator}} entries.
* VikingFuneral: She is given this after she is finally broken irreparably following her BigDamnHeroes feat.
* WildTake: Yes, even a pirate ship in the ''One Piece'' world can do this. She was sentient enough to realize that the only way to leave Skypiea is going through a 30,000 drop, and have an [[OhCrap appropriate reaction]] to this discovery.
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: Her cracked keel. The Galley-la shipwrights, the best in the One Piece world, tell the Straw Hats that it would be better to get a new ship. They could make a new keel for ''Merry'', sure, but it wouldn't be the same, and nobody would feel that more than the Straw Hats. This eventually leads to Merry herself being rendered beyond repair and dying from her injuries.
