Monkey D. Luffy is TheCaptain of the [[TrueCompanions Straw Hat Pirates]]; your average seventeen/[[TimeSkip nineteen]]-year-old {{Shonen}} IdiotHero. Son of Dragon, a revolutionary considered "The Worst Criminal In the World". Grandson of Garp, a humongously powerful Marine vice-admiral who had cornered the Pirate King himself on several occasions. Wants to find One Piece and [[ToBeAMaster become the Pirate King]]. Ate the Gum-Gum Fruit[[note]] (Japanese: ''Gomu Gomu no Mi'')[[/note]] at the age of seven, giving him stretching powers that he has become quite a master of. Also, after training with Silvers Rayleigh, he has mastered the 3 types of ''Haki'' (literally "Ambition", it functions pretty much like chi).

His dream of becoming the Pirate King comes from an incident in his youth involving mountain bandits and a sea serpent that resulted in his idol Shanks losing his left arm. Before leaving Luffy's village the very next day, Shanks gave him his straw hat, telling him to give it back when he's become a great pirate.

He has a bounty of 400,000,000 Berries.[[note]] It started at 30,000,000 after he destroyed Arlong Park and inadvertently foiled a local Marine captain's graft; his bounty was raised to 100,000,000 after defeating Crocodile in Alabasta; it tripled to 300,000,000 after the incident at Enies Lobby; raised again to 330,000,000 after the Paramount War; the latest increase follows his actions during the Punk Hazard arc.[[/note]]
-----
* AcquiredPoisonImmunity: [[spoiler:Because of his fight with [[PoisonousPerson Magellan]] and subsequent healing by Ivankov in Impel Down, his body was resistant against the poison given by a Fishman assassin two years later, and also Caeser Clown not long after]].
* AintTooProudToBeg: Vivi teaches Luffy that violence isn’t always the right answer during Drum Island arc. He shows [[CharacterDevelopment he learned his lesson]] when he begs help for [[spoiler: Sanji in Fishman Island]]. PoseOfSupplication is also seen in Impel Down, where Luffy shows his gratitude to unconscious Bon Clay.
** [[spoiler: It's worth noting that this is considered very unusual In-Universe. People with Haoshoku Haki are practically never humble or gracious. Just compare Luffy to Hancock.]]
* TheAllegedBoss: Luffy's the captain of the Straw Hats but usually doesn't act like it. Particularly towards the beginning of the show, he tended to follow orders more than give them, prompting several characters to point out that Nami acted more like the captain than the actual captain. However, this has been changing as the story goes on: Luffy gives orders and makes decisions for the crew a lot more often now.
* AllLovingHero: Really became obvious during the Whitebeard War, although it was alluded to after the Enies Lobby Incident.
** True, but Downplayed. Luffy actually claims himself that his compassion, kindness, and willingness to protect people only extends to those he "likes"; or, in other words, people who catch his attention for some reason or another. Of course, being TheHero, it just so happens that he "likes" most of the people he encounters (generally, anybody that's not trying to kill him.)
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: He puts his friends before everything else. See AntiHero for more details.
** In fact, prior to the TimeSkip, Luffy's bounty tended to rise whenever there was a crisis involving the women of the crew. He gained his initial bounty when he beat Arlong and liberated Nami from his control, had it rise when he defeated Crocodile and helped save Vivi's country, and had another rise after his rescue of Robin at Enies Lobby. Downplayed in his latest rise - the crew's encounter with Camie the mermaid is, indirectly, what caused the Straw Hats to [[spoiler:scatter around the world and for Luffy to get the news about Ace's execution]], but Luffy's motivation after that isn't for Camie. [[spoiler:Instead, his actions over the course of that one week are to save Ace, and while the rescue ''isn't'' successful, Luffy ended up with ''another'' bounty increase – something remarkable, as three hundred million is largely considered the cap for a rookie pirate such as Luffy.]]
* AngstComa: Granted, there's a large physical component of exhaustion to it as well, but it's [[spoiler:Ace's death]] that sends him into [[BlankWhiteEyes white-eye]] gape-mouth land. It's actually so bad that Luffy doesn't even notice he's lost his prized straw hat, after it falls off him while Jimbei is rushing him to safety. This actually lasts two whole weeks for him, and when he wakes up, he flips out.
* AnimalMotifs: [[CaptainObvious A Monkey, duh]]. Although a video game once had his motif as a lion, which is also a good fit, if you think about it. Lazy as hell, eats huge quantities of meat, courageous, and he will ''slaughter'' you if you mess with someone from his group.
* AntiHero: At the beginning of the series, he was [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything a criminal in name only]]. He was sometimes [[InnocentlyInsensitive a bit rude]], and beat up [[VillainWithGoodPublicity "good]] [[TheSocialDarwinist guys"]] who really deserved it, but that was all. [[DarkerAndEdgier Later on]], his morality has caused a mild InternetBackdraft due to his [[AlwaysSaveThegirl certain questionable actions]].
** Luffy has admitted that he ''doesn't want'' to be a hero. He'll help people if he deems that he "likes them", would rather die than leave a comrade behind, and [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything doesn't do typical pirate things like rape and pillage]], but he doesn't necessarily care what people think of him, and if the situation calls for it, he [[TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty fights dirty]] and uses his enemies as human shields or human weapons (on one occasion) and destroys public property freely in his many battles and uses trees and buildings as weapons.
** However, he does admire heroes enormously. His reasons for not wanting to be one is among the lines of him viewing heroes as ''completely'' selfless. In which case, his refusal stems from the expectations, he, as a hero, would have to do that would bother him, i.e. sharing meat. He immediately agreed to be one after [[spoiler:Jimbei promised he would get his meat rather than having to divide among the people. Trust me, ItMakesSenseInContext.]]
** For the curious, the specific instance that caused many fans to believe he'd slid further down the scale was when he released half the inmates of Impel Down in his quest to save his brother, ignoring [[AntiVillain Hannyabal's and Magellan's]] [[JerkassHasAPoint frankly-very-good arguments]] as to why they should stay locked up. Of course at the time he was desperate and, as Ivankov mentions, they needed as much of a force as possible to get out of Impel Down. Especially when you're fighting your way from the bottom level to the surface with hundreds of Marines in your way.
*** Still, even [[spoiler:after the time skip, long after Ace had already died, he has yet to show any sort of guilt for the dozens of criminals he freed. Then again, seeing as how they fought together with him during the war, he might see them as good guys.]]
* {{Asexuality}}: One of the closest examples for the trope that Shonen manga is probably ever going to get. WordOfGod mentions that Luffy is more interested in adventure than women, and that there will be no real romance in ''One Piece''. See ChasteHero below.
* AwesomeButImpractical: [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique His Second Gear technique]] [[CastFromHitPoints slowly shaves off his life]], and overusing it in a single fight can (or at least it used to) tire him out and leave him open to attack. But it is DAMN awesome.
** [[spoiler:After the TimeSkip, he seems to have improved it by having only single a body part(s) under Gear 2nd's effects at one time.]]
** A much straighter example would be Third Gear, which slowed him down and left him completely vulnerable to Rob Lucci when he tried an extensive use of it. He gets around this later by using it almost exclusively for finishing blows.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He observed the [=CP9=] members using [[FlashStep Soru]], and he soon began using an even faster and superior version of the move while in Gear Second.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassAdorable: He is a cute and handsome young man. He gets really adorable in his chibi-form after using 3rd gear.
** BadassBoast: "I'M GONNA BE KING OF THE PIRATES!!!!!" It may not sound like much to our ears, but this statement is considered utterly shocking in-universe, as many mere mortals are scared to challenge the world like this.
*** In the Alabasta arc: "I am the man who will surpass you [Crocodile]!" Considering he said that to one of The Seven Warlords of the Sea, right after he rebuffed the above statement, that's really something.
*** And in the Thriller Bark arc: "Tell that idiot Moria, that if he lays a hand on my crew, I'll blast this island till there's nothing left!" Important to note that then Moria was also a Warlord, one with a higher bounty than him.
** BadassFamily: Just the latest in the Monkey line to cause headaches for the World Government.
** BadassLongcoat: Wears one in ''Anime/OnePieceFilmStrongWorld''.
* BadLiar: The only way his lies could be more blatant would be if a neon sign appeared on top of his head and flashed "I AM LYING" every time he lied.
* BalloonBelly: Comes with being a BigEater and his elastic nature. Actually uses it in combat to great effect. [[spoiler:After the TimeSkip, he has learned to more accurately return the projectiles upgrading his belly into an AttackReflector.]]
* TheBeastmaster: He's show shades of it ever since the timeskip, being able to tame and befriend huge and/or dangerous animals in a flash thanks to his Haki.
* BerserkButton:
** Get between him and his food, and he will be angry.
** Touch his hat without permission and he will pound you.
** Hurt one of his [[TrueCompanions crew]] – or for that matter, one of your own – and you are '''dead'''.
** Hurting anybody who's been nice to you is another way to tick him off. When he found out Zoro injured the people at Whiskey Peak who threw a party for them, he was not happy. (he had no idea at the time that they were Baroque Works agents).
** He may not act like it all the time, but for him, piracy is SeriousBusiness. He doesn't take kindly to those who flaunt the jolly roger. Wapol learned that the hard way.
** Tell Luffy you're going to become the Pirate King before he does and his response is usually a finishing move. [[note]] There are exceptions to this general rule. Some have claimed they are going to be the Pirate King and he just boasts how it will be him, leading to them becoming TheRival and/or WorthyOpponent. [[/note]]
** If the events of Fishman Island are any indication, Luffy doesn't take kindly to people threatening other people's siblings. Can't really blame him [[spoiler:considering that both his "brothers" were killed (one turned out to have survived their brush with death)]].
** [[spoiler:A new one that has surfaced is making a negative comment about Ace's death, as Don Chinjao found out the hard way]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: You ''reeeeally'' don't want to make him angry. Seriously.
** ''Anime/OnePieceFilmStrongWorld'' should have been called ''Luffy Gets Angry: Shit Goes Down''.
** The same can be said of the sixth movie, the only time besides the aforementioned tenth movie where Luffy [[spoiler:''kills'' the BigBad.]]
* BigBrotherWorship: Downplayed version. While Luffy clearly idolized his older [[spoiler:adopted]] brother Ace when they were younger, they did have a bit of a sibling rivalry and not once was Luffy ever blind to Ace's faults. Nonetheless, it can be argued that Ace was the most important person in Luffy's life, protecting him and practically raising him to be the happy and carefree person he is today. [[spoiler:Which is why Luffy was absolutely ''devastated'' when Ace died to protect him. One of the only reasons why Luffy never crossed the DespairEventHorizon after Ace's death is the realization that Ace died so he could live and would've wanted him to move on with his life.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: Gets quite a few.
** During the Marineford arc, he manages to pull this trope off as he and the rest of the Impel Down escapees crash down from the sky, ''ship and all!''
* BigEater: The elastic stomach probably helps. At multiple points, he eats until his entire body is horribly distended. He can then digest it in about five seconds.
** [[JustifiedTrope Makes sense]], if you see how much energy he uses on a day to day basis, let alone during a fight.
* {{Bishounen}}: At least from [[ImagineSpot Hancock's point of view]]...
* BloodBrothers: [[spoiler:With Ace and Sabo. None of them were related of course, but they were very close and even made a ceremony of drinking sake and became brothers. Luffy was heartbroken by both their deaths, so no words can express the joy on his face when he learns that he still has one brother left in the world.]]
* BloodKnight: Though not to the extent of Zoro (who can border on NominalHero at times), Luffy loves a good fight – and it doesn't help that it's one of the few things in this world he's ''good'' at, to the point of being considered a genius. Though he doesn't like pointless fights with weaklings, as shown with [[SmugSnake Bellamy]].
* BookDumb: Very much so when it comes to science and medicine -- he once tried to heal a wounded Zoro by pouring booze on his face because "Zoro likes sake, so it'll make him better". However, he's a genius in combat, social skills, and politics, beating "wittier" enemies like [[ImplacableMan Eneru]].
* BornLucky: He has been described as having the Devil's Luck. While the lightning bolt that saved him on the execution platform may have been Dragon's doing, he's survived a number of encounters due only to extreme good fortune.
** Basil Hawkins later says that no matter the situation Luffy always has a slim chance of survival. Combine this with Luffy's determinator mentality and brilliant luck...
* BornWinner: Much like his [[spoiler:adopted]] brother, Luffy's heritage meant he had a ''lot'' of potential – the only difference is that his took a little longer to show. As a trade-off, Luffy was also completely unaware of his heritage when he was younger (unlike Ace) and was therefore more emotionally stable.
* BreakTheCutie: Unlike all his crewmembers, who have a traumatic past that defines their personality, Luffy’s breaking moment happened in the present storyline. Afterwards he TookALevelInBadass, gained a new slew of [[BerserkButton Berserk Buttons]], and became even more determined to protect his loved ones.
* BullyHunter: In spite of his adamant claims to ''not'' be a hero, Luffy does NOT gracefully tolerate over-entitled assholes who use their positions and power to flagrantly bully those weaker than they are; he has a particularly sore spot towards {{Bad Boss}}es who mistreat loyal employees who they should be taking care of. Doing/being either of the above in front of him is a one way ticket to being pounded into the pavement. Note that this attitude of Luffy's is contagious; associate with him long enough and you will also catch his intolerance towards bullies (as shown with the originally cynical and unfeeling Zoro), even if you were once (working for) a bully yourself.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Luffy is an absolute idiot, having NoSenseOfDirection, constantly eating so much and then falling asleep right afterward and goes right for danger for no other reason than "FUN FUN FUN!". None of his crew mates deny that he's an idiot. None of his crew mates also deny that he deserves to be their captain, both as a fighter and as a leader.
* ButtMonkey: Constantly a victim of (comical) abuse from his crew mates due to his stupidity, and he frequently ends up in strange situations that keep him from fighting.
* CatchPhrase: "I'm gonna be Pirate King!"
** "MEAT!"
* CementShoes: Arlong did this to him in their fight. Luckily, the [[KryptoniteFactor normal vulnerability to water of a Devil Fruit user]] only stops them from controlling their own powers instead of negating them entirely, allowing the townspeople to stretch his head out of the water so [[CPRCleanPrettyReliable they could give him CPR when he drowned]].
** Also, one of the few times CPRCleanPrettyReliable is justified, as nothing the villagers could have done would injure Luffy.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Thanks to the TrainingFromHell his grandpa put him through, he's strong enough to destroy steel with his bare hands, knock out large sea monsters, and ''push apart two buildings he was stuck between''. And that's not even using his Devil Fruit ability.
* ChasteHero: Though he knows what romantic relationships ''are'', he just isn't interested... [[EpilepticTrees maybe]].
** And, believe it or not, it becomes a plot point!
* CharacterDevelopment: Prior to the timeskip, he was your typical Shonen Hero. Kind as a saint, strong as hell, dumb as rocks. After the timeskip, however, he is notably leaps and bounds more composed than he was prior to it, now preferring to state what he'll be doing and go through with it rather than scream and shout (except when he's really riled up) and, more importantly, he is actually a respectable and capable leader, listening to his crewmates but never letting himself be questioned (save for in comedic moments) as Captain. All in all, he's gone from Shonen Hero, to Shonen... well, pirate captain. And, while he's still ''definitely'' Luffy as before, Marineford and Rayleigh have beaten some growth into him.
** As if to enforce this, when [[spoiler:Big Mom's ship arrives to capture Caesar, Luffy immediately inquires whether or not Big Mom is on the ship in order to make his next decision of whether or not allowing the Straw Hats at sea to fight.]]
* ChickMagnet:
** He's one of the only characters in the series to actively have women falling for him, ranging from [[StalkerWithACrush Alvida]] (post-{{Gonk}} phase), to almost the entirety of [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]]. His reactions range from being suitably creeped-out, complete obliviousness or platonically appreciative.
** He's funny, strong-willed, enthusiastic, ''insanely nice to nearly everybody he meets'', and incredibly righteous. Naturally, [[TruthInTelevision he has plenty of real life fangirls]]. He's also young, cute, and seriously well-toned. The girls don't go gaga just because of his personality.
* CloudCuckooLander: When he tries to be at his sharpest outside of battle, he can only pull this off. Most of the time he's something between TheDitz and TheFool.
* CombatClairvoyance: After the timeskip, Luffy has mastered Kenbunshoku Haki, a power that allows one to anticipate an opponent's next move. He has learned it to such an extent that he can [[SpiderSense sense where his enemies are]].
* CombatPragmatist: Luffy is not adverse to hitting below the belt or taking {{Human Shield}}s when necessary... or if it's amusing.
* CompellingVoice: A manifestation of his awesomeness. It used to be involuntary and basically limited to really desperate shouting. He doesn't need to actually speak to use it anymore.
* ConfusionFu: Luffy, unlike the other characters, seems to fight freestyle. Being rubber makes this befitting. It even turned into an advantage against Eneru, who can read minds. Luffy simply ricocheted his moves off a wall, making it impossible for anyone, including himself, to predict their path.
* ContagiousHeroism: Luffy is hardly a hero (and doesn't want to be one), but he has a massive problem with powerful people abusing their power and often demonstrates it with his fists. Thanks to his charismatic and caring nature, this attitude quickly takes hold on most of his crew mates, even on the stoic and previously uncaring swordsman Zoro.
* CripplingOverspecialisation: He's very useless at anything but having fun, eating, sleeping, being happy and amiable, and beating people up. He gathers his crew around him over the course of his adventure because he knows he can't go on without their help.
** He acknowledges this during the Arlong arc when Arlong sneers down at him for keeping friends. He retaliates by picking up a pair of swords and waving them wildly in Arlong's face, to no avail. Arlong sneers at him some more, for now trying something he knew he couldn't pull off, and Luffy comes out with this {{Tearjerker}} of a line, while the camera pans over each crew member that fulfills each job:
-->I know! Of course I can't use swords, you idiot! I can't navigate! I can't cook! [[CrowningMomentofFunny I can't even tell lies!]] This is why I need my friends if I want to survive!
* CrossdressingVoices: Voiced by a woman in both the original Japanese and both English dubs.[[note]] This is confirmed to be a requirement from Toei. Mike [=MacFarland=], the line producer of Funimation's dub, implied that they would have rather cast a man, but were overruled. He got used to Colleen's interpretation of Luffy pretty quickly.[[/note]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Often both a badass ''and'' a moron at the same time.
** He actually tries to weaponize his idiot nature in the Eneru fight, in order to defeat his mind-reading. It works, but he also becomes too stupid to remember to attack.
* CuddleBug: Luffy shows how much he loves his friends by hugging them, ''regardless of gender.'' This can get problematic when the girl in question is actually romantically interested in him; doubly so because he [[{{Asexuality}} won't]] return romantic love.
* CursedWithAwesome: Like all Devil Fruit users, he's gained incredible powers at the cost of never being able to swim and being branded a freak forever. Not that either of these facts bother him, though. And unlike other Devil Fruit users, this does not scare him away from water sports. It bothers him less than others (like, say, Buggy) because Luffy was ''never'' able to swim even before eating the Gum-Gum fruit. The Red-Haired Pirates nickname for him was "Anchor".
* DeathGlare: He always stares down enemies, and when pissed gives these. Two particularly intense faces occur, 1st was right before he defeated Lucci with his [[RapidFireFisticuffs Jet Gatling]]. And the 2nd one was to Jimbei while he was having a truly epic FreakOut on Amazon Lily.
** [[spoiler: Later becomes one of his regular abilities thanks to Haki]].
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Many of his opponents. Eneru is probably the best example, as he spent most of the Skypiea arc proving how strong he was. This becomes a plot point: A big part of the character development of Luffy comes from the realization that it's impossible for him to beat the most powerful Marines and pirates of the New World. [[spoiler:Cue 2 years training with the Pirate King's first mate]].
* DelayedReaction: Used ''a lot'' of times for comedic effect.
* {{Determinator}}: Luffy powers through injuries that should have killed him several times over, often without outside assistance. In no particular order, he's been dehydrated to a dessicated husk, skewered, cut, drowned, blown up, bitten (a ''super'' strong shark bite, mind you), beaten to a bloody pulp, stabbed, crushed, covered in arrows (in one of the movies), frozen, burnt, shot by ''lasers'', and poisoned to the point of '''melting''', yet is still alive and kicking.
** The poisoned part was almost a subversion, because it all but killed him. He was healed by Ivankov, but the technique used was explicitly reliant on the patient's will to live and even Ivankov was shocked that Luffy recovered in a few hours, despite his initial estimate that it would take days for Luffy to recover, if he recovered at all.
** A quantifiable example of his Determinator status was shown off at the end of the Thriller Bark arc, when Bartholomew Kuma pushed all of Luffy's pain out of him and into Zoro, and the damage it dealt to the BadassNormal was... not pretty.
* DeusExitMachina: He's the strongest of the crew along with Zoro and Sanji, and the most likely to get lost, trapped or otherwise unable to initially participate in battle until the most powerful enemy remains.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Is prone to this.
** [[spoiler:At Enies Lobby when Spandam is gloating about how the World Government is unstoppable, he orders Sniper King (Usopp, but he doesn't realize it) to burn their flag, effectively declaring war on the WG and all 170+ of its member nations.]]
** [[spoiler:After learning that Big Mom of the Four Emperors is going to destroy Fishman Island because they were unable to give her her monthly 10-ton delivery of candy (due to Hody destroying the candy factory and the Straw Hats eating the rest), Luffy does what no other pirate would dare do – he takes the Transponder Snail (i.e. a phone in the One Piece world) from Big Mom's subordinate and tells her ''he'' himself ate all 10 tons of her candy and that it's too dangerous to leave her in charge of the island, so when he gets to the New World he's going to kick her ass and ''claim Fishman Island as his OWN territory''; [[ThisMeansWar Big Mom declares war on the Straw Hat Pirates]].]]
* DisappearedDad: Luffy was apparently unaware that he even ''had'' a father. [[spoiler:Considering the fact that his father is the "World's Most Wanted Man", plus Ace's own attitude toward his equally infamous father, it was probably for the best.]]
** Come to think of it, where's his [[MissingMom mother]]?
* TheDitz: [[AllThereInTheManual In one of the data books]], his intelligence score was a whopping 1/5.
* TheDreaded: Due to his actions during the Paramount War, along with his actions while with his crew (such as Enies Lobby and Sabaody), Luffy's become so infamous that anyone who isn't as strong as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea instantly fears him. For instance, at Corrida Colosseum, while incognito, he accidentally gives his real name and everyone immediately freaks out. They only stop once they see the sign on his back that says "Lucy", and start remembering rumors about him being an eight-meter tall giant.
* DumbIsGood: While Luffy has low intelligence about things like mathematics and science, he is a very good and mostly pure man. He will go out of his way to help people if they were kind to him, and recognize when he is in a situation he needs help in.
* DumbassHasAPoint: There have been moments where he surprises his crew by saying something that actually makes sense.
* DynamicEntry: How did he get to Marineford? Well, it overlaps with BigDamnHeroes, 'cause he dropped a ship out of the sky! (It wasn't intentional, but that doesn't make it any less awesome)
** [[spoiler:Done again in the Fishman Island arc when he leaps out of a shark's mouth and kicks Hody Jones just as he's about to assassinate the king.]]
* EnemyMine: Seems to have a knack for pulling this off, even in the most unlikely of cases. Mihawk actually considers this his most dangerous ability.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Luffy gets called "Straw Hat" by pretty much everyone he fights, with rare exceptions.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Manga/DragonBall Son Goku]], in a spiritual sense. Oda said he designed Luffy based on what 'manliness' meant to him as a child. Incidentally, Luffy met Goku in the ''Dragon Ball x One Piece - Cross Epoch'' crossover. He even got to ride on the Flying Nimbus.
* FatalFlaw: Wrath. Luffy's inability to control his volcanic-rage is precisely what led to [[spoiler:Kuma attacking and dispersing his crew around the world, leaving him all alone in the world for two years.]]
** Also selfishness. His selfishness isn't your typical it's-all-about-me-attitude, more about his selfish desires like having meat and good adventure, becoming the pirate king, and protecting his friends. In the Sabaody arc, he didn't act on impulse but he seethed with TranquilFury. Luffy did what he felt he had to do, even though he knew it would have grave results. He apologised immediately after hitting Saint Charloss, but showed no regrets. Including the Sabaody incident, Luffy's selfishness is portrayed through the whole series, sometimes in comedic light, but it has always been there, and several characters have commented on it.
* FightOffTheKryptonite: Whenever a fight involves the ocean or seastone. [[spoiler:Taken UpToEleven in the Fishman Island arc. Right after the time-skip, Luffy's full power is never seen because all of his big attacks take place underwater. Even more Badass because the entire time he is fighting a Fishman – a species naturally 10 times stronger than regular humans, able to breath underwater, and masters of underwater combat styles invented specifically for fighting within water. And the entire time Luffy is fighting a sea monster on steroids, his power is being drained by his KryptoniteFactor. He wins anyways]].
* FlashStep: When using [[SuperMode Gear Second]].
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Definitely the former when compared to Ace.
* FreakOut: When [[spoiler:he recovers from his HeroicBSOD and realizes Ace is truly dead.]] In the anime, he also freaks out [[spoiler:when Kuma scatters his crew]], and when [[spoiler:Ace is killed]]. The latter example is particularly terrifying, to say the least.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: At one point, he was able to befriend a ''[[spoiler:Kraken]]''.
** [[spoiler:ChekhovsSkill and ChekhovsGun]]: [[spoiler:And thanks to that, now said Kraken is helping him in the fight against the New Fishmen Pirates. [[CurbStompBattle Not that he or his crew really needed it, but still]].]]
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Luffy started out as some kid from East Blue with an impossible dream. Then came Alabasta. And Enies Lobby. Followed by Impel Down and Marineford. Post-TimeSkip, he and his crew are considered legendary, and the manga isn't even ''close'' to being done yet.
* FunPersonified: Seriously. [[IdiotHero On top]] [[GenkiGuy of]] everything else, his powers are genuinely like something taken out from a Creator/TexAvery cartoon.
** Apparently done on purpose. WordOfGod claims that he made Luffy a rubber man partly because he wanted the hero's fights to always have an element of silliness or the bizarre in them.
* FunnyAfro: He dons one fighting against Foxy. [[RuleOfCool It helps him win]].
* FunSize: The after effect of his Gear Third technique causes him to shrink into a chibi version of himself. [[spoiler:He overcomes this weakness after the timeskip.]]
* GenerationXerox: He has been compared to Gold Roger by multiple people who've encountered him. Given his simple outlook on life and violence towards anyone who hurts his friends, he can also be seen as a GenerationXerox of Shanks.
** According to [[WholesomeCrossdresser Ivankov]], Luffy is very similar to his father.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: He fights predominantly with his fists, although he discovered an attack involving blasting {{awesomeness|IsAForce}}.
* GoOutWithASmile: Just like anybody else with D. as their middle initial, he's prone to this trope. Notably, he smiled before Buggy almost cut his head off at Logue Town.
* GratuitousEnglish: Most of his attacks have English names, particularly in Gear Second.
* GreaterNeedThanMine: It does not matter that he is badly hurt and freezing to death, or poisoned to the point of ''melting'', his friends come first. He never even asks for himself to be helped, merely begs for whoever is there to aid his companions.
* HeavySleeper: Seems to be a family trait.
* [[YouCanBarelyStand He Could Barely Stand...]]: But he STILL got up and kicked Lucci's ass.
* TheHero: He ''is'' the main protagonist, after all.
* HeroicBSOD: Gets hit with this '''hard''' [[spoiler:when Ace gets killed]]. After [[spoiler:Ace's death]], there is a look of despair on Luffy's face that has never been seen before.
** FromBadToWorse, [[spoiler:soon after he regained consciousness and the realization kicked in, Luffy questioned his ability to become the Pirate King for the first time in his entire life. He becomes so depressed that [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness he admits defeat and his own weakness]], another first.]]
** [[spoiler:It was so bad that the only reason Luffy bothers continuing to live his life anymore is because of his crew and the fact that Ace would've wanted him to continue to follow his dream. Without either of those Luffy would've been completely and utterly broken]].
* HeroicRROD: His Gear Second [[spoiler:pre-TimeSkip]] shortens his lifespan with each use, and will eventually wear him out if overused. Gear Third also might count, although it only shrinks Luffy temporarily after each use, with no mentioned long-term effect. [[spoiler:And even that weakness he overcame after the TimeSkip.]]
** When Ivankov gave Luffy his "miracle treatment" to heal Luffy of Magellan's poison, it took an additional ten years off Luffy's lifespan. Add this to the Gear Second, and the regular damage Luffy takes, and Oda seems to be strongly implying that Luffy will die young.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: Child abuse isn't funny... except when it involves [[RefugeInAudacity throwing the child down a ravine, leaving him in the in the wilderness]], and [[CrossesTheLineTwice attaching enough helium balloons to him to make him float into the sky]], all for the purposes of increasing his survival skills. After hearing about it, his crew immediately realizes just where Luffy got his strong will to live from.
* HollywoodHealing: His battles only leave story relevant scars, like his trademark one under his eye he gave himself in Chapter 1 or [[spoiler:the new X shaped scar Akainu gave him]].
** Justified because he's made of rubber, thus extremely difficult to wound. (the eye scar happened before he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit)
* HotBlooded: In fine Shonen fashion. He's a more tranquil version, however.
* HowDoIShotWeb: As a child who had recently eaten the Gum-Gum Fruit, Luffy was rather unskilled with his stretching powers – especially when compared to his mastery at the start of his journey, years later. His signature Gum-Gum Pistol? His first attempt bounced off the ground and back into his own face.
* IconicOutfit: The straw hat, in universe, as seen in the "From the decks of the world" cover story and [[spoiler:at the end of the Fishman Island arc. The new shipment to the island will include straw hats. Why? Because the kids want to play heroes!]]
* IdenticalGrandson: Garp looked identical to Luffy when he was a kid. [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/d/da/Kid_garp.PNG He even had his scar at a young age.]] Even now you can see the resemblance, as Garp looks like a much older and brawnier Luffy.
* IdiotHero: Luffy is quite smart for a Shonen Hero, and not just in combat; he has shown an understanding of basic physics, social skills, survival skills, and politics. The 'Idiot' part comes from his simple outlook on life; while he understands that the current of Reverse Mountain has a scientific explanation, he prefers to just call it a "Mystery Mountain" because it's easier and more fun. That sort of description extends to several other subjects.
* IGaveMyWord: His word is the greatest thing he can give. He takes it seriously. How serious? He promised Robin he'd be her friend forever, so when she was taken from him, he went on a rampage resulting in the complete annihilation of a World Government island, thousands of dead mooks, and a staggering threefold (that would be two hundred MILLION) increase in his bounty.
** He also ignores his word when he feels like it. He gave his word to Hachi repeatedly that he would not mess with a World Noble no matter what happened. [[BlatantLies He totally kept his word.]]
*** In that case, the World Noble in question had just ''shot'' Hachi, so it was conflicting with his major BerserkButton involving his friends getting hurt. He even apologizes to his crew immediately afterward, knowing that he's just gotten everybody in serious trouble.
* ImmuneToBullets: They simply bounce off, though in the beginning of the series he claimed to still not like getting shot.
** Considering how often it's happened since then, he probably got used to it pretty quickly.
** Actually made his rubber bodies' ability to bounce bullet back into a weapons back in the time-skip.
* ImNotAHeroIm: Invokes this with Jimbei. He says he likes heroes, but he knows he's a pirate.
* ImprobableAge: While this applies to the entire crew, Luffy's special in that he's already a legendary pirate and with a 400,000,000 berry bounty, considered one of the frontrunners for becoming Pirate King, and captain of one of the strongest crews on the Grand Line, all at the age of ''19'', while being a pirate (post-TimeSkip) for only about three years, two of which were spent training alone. He's also one of the three ''youngest'' members of the crew, being the same age as Usopp and only two years older than Chopper.
** What's EXTRA interesting is that the CompetenceZone in One Piece is ''very'' adult-centric. Luffy and the Straw Hats are tough, but the strongest characters are often in their middle ages, and there is no shortage of [[BadassGrandpa badass grandpas]] either, because, well... they've just been at it for much longer than Luffy and the crew. But, once the enemies had finally surpassed the 17 year old Luffy, he ''still'' only needed two years of extra training to catch right up again.
* ImprovFu: This is Luffy's main fighting style, as he'll use anything available to him so he can win. This causes his opponents to underestimate him because, more often than not, it looks like him fooling around rather than fighting seriously.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: No matter what happens, he will be always carefree and smiling non-stop. He never actually intended anything bad either because of his moral values or his naivete. Even Hancock's beauty has no effect on him.
** Subverted that once he had lost somebody beloved dearly, he could seriously break down.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Towards ''everyone'' at some point, but the standout example would have to be the Mermaid Princess, Shirahoshi.
* IronicHell: Inverted: Luffy ended up going to [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]], whose leader is the WorldsMostBeautifulWoman Boa Hancock. The natives end up worshipping him as much as they do their leader, and said leader Luffy ends up seeing ''naked''. ''Twice''. To top it all off, thanks to his kind nature, Hancock ends up ''falling in love with him''. If it had been anyone else in this situation, they'd be praising the gods and living it up. However, not only is Luffy an IdiotHero, he's also a ''ChasteHero'', making all of this an ironic ''heaven''.
* IThoughtItWasForbidden: Even though Gear Second reduces his overall lifespan, he tends to use it more and more often, to the point at which he resorts to it for most of his major fights since Enies Lobby.
** [[spoiler:Before the time-skip Gear Second was activated by Luffy using his legs as a pump. After his training, he might've just grown so strong that he ''can't not use Gear Second when he flexes a muscle'']].
* ItsAllMyFault: By telling [[spoiler:Big Mom ''he'' was the one to ruin her candy factory and ate all her candy, he earned her rage, which would have gone to destroying Fishman Island. It was a lie and Big Mom suspects as much but won't try to disprove him]].
* JerkassFacade: He pulls this sometimes to get his point across. Rarely lasts long.
* JustFriends: Luffy, in his own pure-hearted way, ''does'' love Hancock back; the same way he would love and lay down his life for ''any'' of his precious friends. Hancock, although aware of this, personally wished it were something more.
* KiAttacks: [[spoiler:After the two year time-skip, he has completely mastered Haki and can use it to power up his already strong attacks and [[CombatClairvoyance predict enemy attacks]], just like Eneru and his priests]].
** [[spoiler:When he uses Armaments Haki, his body turns [[http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130523032936/onepiece/images/thumb/b/b8/Busoshoku_Koka.png/210px-Busoshoku_Koka.png dark and shiny]], as if his rubber body has gone through a form of vulcanization.]]
* {{Kiai}}: See the end of his fight with Rob Lucci.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Luffy is not book smart. He tends to be spacy and fueled by his emotions. But when it comes to fighting, he is very good at understanding what is needed to win.
* KnuckleCracking: Tends to do this frequently.
* TheLeader: A combination of Type III (Headstrong) and Type IV (Charismatic). Has some shades of the Levelheaded Type II, but only when the situation is truly dire.
* LeeroyJenkins: Does this whenever he's NOT trapped somewhere and can't fight, but the most notable straight example was at the beginning of the assault on Enies Lobby, where he actually took off full speed into the heart of Enies Lobby during the middle of planning, causing his allies to nearly be wiped out. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPqKRPU3aXM Perfectly summed up here.]]
* LightningBruiser: Possibly the fastest and most agile member of his crew, he also has incredible durability and strength. WordOfGod is that only Zoro matches his physical power.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: While not spending any of his childhood with his father, he has nonetheless taken after him with his will and dangerous unpredictability, and both are stakes in the World Government's side.
* MagneticHero: Lampshaded by Mihawk:
-->It's not some kind of special power, but he has the ability to make allies of everyone he meets. And that is the most fearsome power on these high seas!
* ManChild: A perfect example of the trope. Technically averted before the timeskip, as he was still a teenager, but played straight afterwards.
* MoralityPet: To Hancock.
* MrFanservice: Has plenty of fan girls in-universe and in real-life.
* MyFavoriteShirt: His NiceHat serves as a NumberOneDime for him, and is also his BerserkButton when targeted.
** HatDamage: This can still happen though.
** WardrobeWound: Said damage is generally treated as this.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:[[WhamEpisode The Death of Portgas D. Ace]]]].
* NiceGuy: Mostly. [[BerserkButton Just don't touch]] [[TrueCompanions any of his friends]], [[TrademarkFavoriteFood his meat]], or [[NiceHat his straw hat]].
* NiceHat: It's even on his Jolly Roger!
* NoBadassToHisValet: The world sees Luffy as a dangerous pirate with a massive amount of potential and as one of the frontrunners to become Pirate King. His crew also sees him as that, but they also see him as their idiot captain who wouldn't last five minutes in the Grand Line, let alone the New World, without them, not due to any lack of ability, but due to his recklessness and outright stupidity. Hell, prior to the TimeSkip, Luffy was practically Nami's bitch. Rarely does Luffy ever act like he's the captain of the crew with all the abuse he suffers at their hands.
* NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction: Luffy would rather give up being a pirate than have the location of One Piece handed to him because there is no adventure in that.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Pre-TimeSkip he was subjected to a number of these. Post, he's been handing them out with impunity, [[spoiler:beating the crap out of Hody Jones with only one major wound (and Jones only managed to land it because Luffy was underwater, had his movements restrained by a ''bubble'', and trying to prevent a ColonyDrop from destroying Fishman Island). Caesar Clown similarly got his ass kicked without even managing to land a ''single'' hit on Luffy.]]
* NoSenseOfDirection: Not as terrible as Zoro's, but it's still really bad.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Luffy's loving hug of frienship and gratitude for Hancock was quite genuine; too bad he did not realize that it meant a ''lot'' more to the poor girl.
* NoShirtLongJacket: Post-TimeSkip.
* [[NoTrueScotsman No True Pirate]]: Has a brief argument with Nami regarding this trope when discussing Kuro, whom he considers unworthy to be a pirate.
* NotAfraidToDie: If there's anything in this world that Luffy does not fear, it is death. A trait he shares with every carrier of the D. initial (including the [[spoiler:Pirate King Gol D. Roger]] and excluding Blackbeard). It was this very trait that drove Smoker to chase after him into the Grand Line, having noted the very disturbing similarities that Luffy's near-death experience in Loguetown had with the execution of the Pirate King, the most prominent moment being when Luffy ''[[GoOutWithASmile smiled]]'' just as Buggy's sword came down to end his life, similar to how Roger smiled as they lopped off his head.
* NumberOneDime: His trademark straw hat is a gift from his idol Shanks, and he treasures it to the point where if he gives it to someone else, it's really saying something. Likewise, if someone ever dares damage it, ass will be kicked in great quantities.
** Its importance may have been elevated recently, given that a flashback revealed [[spoiler:that the hat may have belonged to Gold Roger himself]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Possibly, if the AlternateCharacterInterpretation above is the truth.
* ObliviousToLove: He has ''no'' idea how Hancock feels about him.
** Averted, at least after the TimeSkip (and possibly before). He knows how she feels, but to him she is a precious friend he would gladly die for, but JustFriends all the same.
* OlderThanHeLooks
* OneManArmy: When [[spoiler:Robin was being held in a government facility]] he charged head on into it, well ahead of his crew. The enemies numbered in the ''thousands''. Luffy cut through them in ''mere minutes''.
* OnlyICanKillHim: Not so much kill, but it's pretty obvious there are opponents that only Luffy has the power to defeat. Eneru was a [[ShockAndAwe notable example]]. His crew members even point out that Luffy seems to have a knack for singling out the single most dangerous opponent in a group that the rest would have no chance against.
* {{Otaku}}:
** He displayed a surprising [[BeetleManiac interest in beetles]] at Jaya and Skypiea.
** And he remarks about things that are, "So cool/awesome!!!" Especially robots, cyborgs, lasers, any sort of beam weapon, cannons, and really ANYTHING you can relate back to Super Robot anime and manga.
* PaperThinDisguise: As "Lucy", which is really just him with an old-man beard and shades. Later, he takes off the shades for a gladiator helmet. [[spoiler:However, this worked in his favor as it was more than enough to fool Doflamingo, when he switched out for Sabo to take his place]].
* ParentalAbandonment: While not an integral part of his character, his father willingly left him to go help the rest of the world, his mother hasn't even been mentioned, and his Grandpa made no attempt to at least have him raised near him. Luckily, though, his foster mother and brothers made up for this void, and the only time he ever showed sadness over being lonely was in childhood before meeting Ace.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The full extent of Luffy's strength post-TimeSkip hasn't been shown, but considering that he and [[spoiler:fellow Supernova Law]] are presumably on the same level, Luffy will eventually become this if he hasn't already.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Rather puny in comparison to most of his opponents. He's 19 years old and just 5'8", while his opponents range from above 6' to being freaking giants (literally!). Regardless, the large size disparity seems to make no difference for him; He's able to smack around a Pacifista (Cyborgs who are all about 22'6" feet tall) just as easily as he can smack around somebody like, say, Captain Kuro (an average sized human being).
* [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything The Pirate That Doesn't Do Anything]]: Luffy's not interested in pillaging and raping, unlike other Pirates in the series, but only became a Pirate for the sake of adventures. He mostly fights with other Pirates and the Government, but leaves civilians alone.
** In the Romance Dawn pilot, he says the Morgania pirates are the ones who pillage and rape, while Peace Mains fight Morgania pirates and look for adventure.
** Though he does cause lots of property damage, and he's not opposed to stealing available loot if an opportunity arises. Then there was that prison break...
* PlotArmor: Lampshaded by Basil Hawkins. He tried several times to calculate a scenario which Luffy couldn't possibly survive, but Luffy always had at least a slim chance.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: He always believes in his crew, even when they appear to betray or murder one of their own.
* ThePowerOfLove: At least half of everything Luffy has ever done in the series is driven out of the intense love he has for his crew. While undoubtedly selfish, there isn't anything in the world Luffy wouldn't do for their sake.
* PowerOfTrust: Luffy is an ''excellent'' judge of character, successfully allying even with former enemies, both as permanent crewmates (Nico Robin, Franky) and as temporary allies (various other members of Baroque Works). [[spoiler:It will be put to the ultimate test with his alliance with rival supernova captain-turned-Warlord Trafalgar Law. And it pays off. Law, despite his desire to end Donflamingo, moved to protect Luffy's crew.]]
* PowerPerversionPotential: Yes, everything stretches, as the inhabitants of [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]] discovered.
* ThePromise:
** He made one with Ace and Sabo when they were children to go out to sea and live their lives free of regrets.
** Not to mention the one with Shanks, that he'd return his Straw Hat to him one day after he became a great pirate. [[spoiler:It is for this promise, Shanks refuses to see the injured Luffy at Maineford, as Luffy hadn't reached that level yet.]]
** [[spoiler:Though, considering Luffy was already a very famous pirate at the time, it's arguable that Shanks reasoning had more to do with the fact that Luffy was unconscious at the time and thus unable to actually return the hat to Shanks.]]
* PrimaryColorChampion: He's the hero of the setting, and his standard outfit is a red waist coat with blue trousers and a yellowish hat.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: His Gatling, Pistol-Shotgun, Storm, Fireworks, Cannon, Jet Gatling, and Jet Cannon techniques.
** And now we have [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome Elephant Gatling]]
* RealMenEatMeat: He loves it. He was once in a sleep that should have lasted for three days but he was woken up when Usopp yelled there was meat.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Zoro's blue, although Zoro can be a little red sometimes.
* RightMakesMight: If one has a strong ambition, one will always prevail in the end.
* RubberMan: Refers to himself as such. Thanks to consuming the Gum-Gum Fruit.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: '''So much'''. He's tough as hell, but he has absolutely ''none'' of the most basic pirating skills. Lampshaded as part of a BadassBoast when he fought Arlong.
* SecretLegacy: The mysterious "Will of D." that several characters have mentioned.
** Goes a bit further when [[spoiler:he's revealed to have Roger's hat and can hear the voices of Sea Kings like the man himself could.]]
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Even before Garp was revealed as Luffy's grandfather, they both showed a BunnyEarsLawyer mentality, being more concerned with eating most of the time, often being absent-minded and a tendency to randomly fall asleep.
* ShowyInvincibleHero: Luffy earned the record-breaking bounty of 30 million belli for a rookie in East Blue where he won all his fights. [[{{Badass}} Smoker]] being an odd exception to the rule. And the East Blue Saga covered a hundred manga chapters! Even in the early parts of his adventure in the Grand Line, Luffy’s win record continued and it seemed like [[{{Determinator}} nothing]] [[InvincibleHero could stop him]] [[ToBeAMaster until he reached his goal]]. But then it was [[SubvertedTrope subverted]]. [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown Repeatedly]]. [[BreakTheCutie And hard]].
* ShutUpHannibal: Has done this numerous times against the [[BigBad Big Bads of the current arc]]. Prominent examples include against Arlong, Crocodile, Bellamy, Spanda, and Caesar Clown.
* SignatureMove: The Gum-Gum Pistol, Bazooka, Gatling, and Balloon are his 4 most iconic moves, although he typically uses their gear 2nd versions now.
* SinsOfOurFathers: [[spoiler:Luffy's first and greatest crime was being born into the world, for his father is the world-renowned criminal "The Revolutionary" Monkey D. Dragon; a predicament similar to that of his adopted brother Ace, their existences ''alone'' being sins in the eyes of the world. Unlike Ace, however, his parentage doesn't really bother him all that much -- partially because stuff like that never mattered to Luffy, and partially because Luffy didn't know he even ''had'' a father until he was seventeen.]] He also kind of suffers this under the fact that his grandfather is Garp.
* SmartBall: While some of the times he's right are the result of his [[CloudCuckoolander bizarre]] or [[DumbassHasAPoint poorly thought out]] guesses being correct, there are times when he's more reasonable than usual, such as when he tells Vivi that people will die no matter what she does, and defeating Crocodile, rather than intercepting the rebels, is the surest way to stop the rebellion.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Quite possibly the greatest version of this trope. Ever. Without going into detail, let's just say that most of the arcs, movies, and video games involve him entering the scene and completely ruining the villain's plans right when they're about to be finished. Every time.
** More often than not, he never even went in intending to stop the villain or knowing the villain even had an evil plan. He is literally just an unexpected variable that happened to mess up the scheme because the villain did just ONE thing wrong. That thing is usually trying to preemptively eliminate him.
** Reversed with Blackbeard's master plan. Everything Luffy did just worked in favor of Blackbeard's plans, even speeding them up significantly, the most obvious example being the Impel Down incident.
** [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] attempted to take advantage of these tendencies [[spoiler:in order to screw up Law's plan]]. He correctly deduced that [[spoiler:Luffy would immediately be sidetracked by a tournament to win the Mera Mera no Mi, most likely to ensure that his brother's power did not end up in the wrong hands. It would've worked, but it backfired magnificently when it created another Spanner to screw up his plans: Sabo, who takes Luffy's place in the colosseum in order to the win Mera Mera no Mi, being perhaps the ''only'' person outside of his own crew that Luffy would allow to take its power. This can be largely blamed on Doflamingo, as the tournament was most likely the main reason Sabo was in Dressrosa in the first place]]. It's at this point you can honestly say that anything even ''remotely'' related to Luffy has the potential to be this for ''any'' villain.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: He's known as Ruffy in some foreign editions, most notably the German translation.
* StraightManAndWiseGuy: The Wise Guy to Law's Straight Man. [[spoiler: They go on a great tear in 748, with Cavendish and Zoro in the middle of it all.]]
* SuperDrowningSkills: The most common victim of the Devil Fruit users in his crew. Of course, he couldn't swim even before getting his Devil Fruit powers, hence why Shanks's crew nicknamed him "Anchor".
* SuperMode: His [[LightningBruiser Gear Second]] and [[MightyGlacier Gear Third]] techniques.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Subverted with Nightmare Luffy. He's a scary, giant, evil-looking [[Comicbook/IncredibleHulk Hulk-like]] figure, and Nami and Usopp were initially afraid of him, but he's actually still Luffy on the inside. Just REALLY serious. However, that could be something to do with shadows inside him, since Usopp and Nami noticed he behaves differently.
* TearsOfJoy: Can only burst into tears [[spoiler:when, in chapter 731, Sabo reveals he is alive.]]
* TerribleArtist: Luffy attempted to paint his logo on the ''Going Merry''. The rest of the crew hated it so much they had Usopp paint over it. Later, he successfully paints his logo on Laboon. It looks as competent as you'd expect for this trope.
* ThanksForTheMammary: Luffy accidentally gropes Boa Hancock when he was hiding under her dress since how he was latched onto her kept her from walking straight. The act certainly affects Hancock, but she was forced to hold up her facade in front of the Marines.
** Taken UpToEleven when he's catapulted into the room (and chest) of Princess Shirahoshi...who is one of One Piece's giant characters.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: [[spoiler:Lately, after the timeskip, he uses Gear Second attacks for ''everything''. Considering how strong he already is and the fact that he has Haki, his normal Gum Gum attacks should be more than enough to solve his problems, rather than senselessly shorten his lifespan to beat a few minor enemies]].
** [[spoiler:He may not have the drawback post-time skip. Still this trope though, as he doesn't ''need'' to go SuperMode.]]
* ThirdTimesTheCharm: Against Crocodile, though there is a case to be had in his confrontations with Eneru and Rob Lucci.
* TimeToUnlockMoreTruePotential: By the end of the first half of the series, approx. time around the Sabaody Arc, his skills and power are simply no longer enough to beat anybody or anything stronger than a single Pacifista (with the support of his entire team at that...). [[spoiler: Thankfully, he got better and after two years of training, he can now also defeat a Pacifista in a single hit (along with a giant KRAKEN, for that matter...)]]
* TooDumbToLive: Indeed. He would have been killed many times if not for incredible strokes of luck and allies who are willing to save his ass. In some less dangerous situations he knows what he does, but his problem is that he basically has no fears and fails to recognize true danger.
* TookALevelInBadass: BIG TIME during the TimeSkip. To the point that he hasn't had a real challenging fight since the TimeSkip ended [[spoiler:until the Dressrosa arc.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Meat. Any kind of meat. ([[spoiler:Although he's not as fond of seafood, as revealed by the Fishman Island arc.]]) Eating it even makes him stronger, and if he's not fighting or playing, he's always seen eating meat.
* TranquilFury: If you piss him off enough to make him enter this mode, you're screwed. Luffy usually starts his fights in UnstoppableRage mode, and finishes them in TranquilFury mode, when his enemy has really pissed him off.
* TrainingFromHell: Went through this in childhood. It involved being thrown into jungles at night and tied to balloons, apparently.
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler:The Paramount War is one HUGE BreakTheCutie moment for our hero, starts during the Sabaody arc, gets many times worse in [[TheAlcatraz Impel Down]], AND he finally rescues his brother only for that brother to lose his life protecting him, he is VERY LUCKY that he is able to return to being himself.]]
* ThroughHisStomach: A surefire way to get Luffy to be your best friend.
* TrouserSpace: Where he keeps the "octopus"...
* UberMensch: Luffy refuses to follow the typical code of pirates, a code that revolves around pirating for treasure rather than your dreams, and does not harm civilians and steal. On one occasion, this even got him ridiculed and beaten, but he still stands strong by his beliefs.
* UnskilledButStrong: Initially with regards to Haki; he starts out only being able to make people submit to his power, and only during the TimeSkip does he learn how to use its forms.
* UnstoppableRage: On Enies Lobby, the soldiers were literally being sent flying by the hundreds from the moment Luffy got there, and it wasn't over until 3000 had been defeated and he had made his point -- shit was getting serious.
** [[spoiler:On Fishman Island, Luffy has recently began annihilating a massive amount of {{Mooks}} without discretion. He has currently taken out 50,000 without even touching them (which is, mind you, more than ''16 times'' the amount he defeated on Enies Lobby), using his Haki, and now he has begun actually attacking them physically. By the looks of things, and considering there was only 100,000 Mooks to start, the rest of his crew might not even be necessary to win the battle]].
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Until the TimeSkip.
* WeaponOfChoice
** ElementalPunch: He can't generate [[ShockAndAwe electricity]], but his immunity to it (because he's rubber) allows him to harness it and supercharge his attacks. So far, the only attack he used with this ability was his "Giant Thor Axe", which, needless to say, was ridiculously strong.
*** [[spoiler:His Gomu Gomu no [[IncendiaryExponent Red Hawk]] attack.]]
** MultiArmedAndDangerous: Subverted -- His gatling gun techniques only make the illusion that he's grown more arms. But played straight in the sense that it still causes an impact equivalent to being hit by multiple punches at the same time.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Most of the situations he's gotten into have been solved through liberal use of punching the right guy ''in the face''. Prior to Marineford, it's typically his ''only'' strategy, many times literally just asking whose ass he has to kick.
** It's fitting, as one of his stronger techniques is also called Gum Gum Mallet and Gum Gum Giant Mallet, which both mean hammer.
* WithMyHandsTied: He [[spoiler:one-shoted Vander Decken with his arms chained]].
* WorthLivingFor: [[spoiler:After Ace's death]], the only reason Luffy found the resolve to keep on living was because of his crew and the fact that [[spoiler:Ace]] would've wanted him to live and move on. Otherwise, Luffy would've probably turned into a DeathSeeker, a clear indication of just how ''bad'' his HeroicBSOD was.
* WorthyOpponent: Smoker. [[spoiler: This has become especially apparent when Smoker was willing to transfer into the ''worst'' marine base on the Grand Line, just so he could wait for Luffy in the New World. He waited ''two years'' for someone that the world thought dead, because he knew that Luffy would return to the sea sooner or later. Luffy sees him this way as well, as when [[FreakyFridayFlip Smoker was stuck in Tashigi's body]] Luffy refused to fight him until he was at full strength.]]
* WouldHitAGirl: Examples include Alvida, Ms. Valentine's Day, Vivi (as Ms. Wednesday and later in a GetAHoldOfYourselfMan), Boa Marigold and Sandersonia.
* XMarksTheHero: He got an X-shaped scar across his chest from [[spoiler: Akainu's attack at Marineford]].
* YouAreNotAlone: After his [[spoiler:HeroicBSOD he suffered from Ace's death, he finally comes out of it when he is reminded he still has his crew who still need him and he needs them.]]
* YouNeverAsked: [[spoiler:The main reason why nobody knew that Luffy and Ace were not blood related is because ''nobody bothered to ask''.]]
* YourSizeMayVary: Luffy's iconic Straw Hat, through the many ArtEvolution phases Oda went and experimented on, our hero's hat has gone from ''fedora sized'' to ''sombrero sized'', though it's not an increasing constant, it may get smaller or bigger depending on the arc.
** Luffy himself is also an example. He's never been tall, but at the start of the series he was mostly average-sized, especially compared to the civilians in the background. Nowadays, he is the shortest character in the series who is not a {{Gonk}}, an animal, a child, or a woman (though most female characters are still taller than him). His body shape also changes from arc to arc. During East Blue and from Skypiea to Water 7, Oda has went for his signature lanky, long-legged style. In other arcs, like the more recent ones, Luffy is drawn with rather short legs and the head-to-body ratio of a young child, which makes him look much shorter than he actually is. Additionally, Oda tends to rapidly switch Luffy's mood from "goofy and light-hearted" to "serious" 'in-between just two pages' from time to time; this often results in him visually gaining a few inches and muscle seamlessly as well as changing his head-to-neck ratio from "childish" to a more mature look. His height is 172 cm (5'7") before the timeskip and 174 cm (5'8") after the timeskip for the record.
* WildCard: As the Captain of the Straw Hats, an entire crew of WildCards themselves due to the mangling of the power balance they've done over the past two years, he is one himself. Hell, considering his reputation for being a SpannerInTheWorks and his general [[CloudCuckooLander unpredictability]], he counts greatly.

[[folder:"Pirate Hunter" Roronoa Zoro]]

Roronoa Zoro is the nineteen/[[TimeSkip twenty-one]]-year-old swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates; he utilizes ''Santoryu'' (literally "Three Sword Style") in battle, wielding one in each hand along with one in the mouth. Mostly drinks and sleeps in his spare time (when he's not training his ass off), but becomes a real demon in battle that can defeat five hundred {{Mooks}} in two seconds. Often wears a green bandanna on his forearm that he ties around his head when he [[LetsGetDangerous gets dangerous]].

Similar to Luffy's goal, Zoro wishes to [[ToBeAMaster become the greatest swordsman in the world]]. Unlike Luffy, however, he needs only to defeat Dracule "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk, the current greatest swordsman in the world, to do so. He actually meets up with Mihawk fairly early in the story, but [[CurbstompBattle failed to land a single hit]] and was sliced by Mihawk's {{BFS}} for his trouble. Mihawk, however, held back just enough to leave Zoro alive, and told him to challenge him again when he was ready. In a strange twist of events, he is ''trained'' by Mihawk to be a stronger swordsman to protect his crew. For giving up his pride for the sake of others impresses Mihawk enough to agree.

His bounty is 120,000,000 Berries.
-----
* AintTooProudToBeg: [[spoiler:After defeating the Humandrills, he has to beg Mihawk to teach him to get stronger for the Straw Hats' sake]].
** Also before this, he [[spoiler:begged Kuma to take his head instead of Luffy's when he defeated the Straw Hat Crew in Thriller Bark.]]
* AntiHero: Zoro can be particularly murderous, as he's a BloodKnight. He was even described by other pirates as being capable of exuding a massive killing intent. Zoro has also stated several times of his willingness to kill.
* {{Asexual}}[=/=]CelibateHero: The only male member of the crew not to peek in the girls' bathroom during the Alabasta arc, and shows a general lack of interest in the opposite sex. He's even proven immune to Nami and Robin's feminine wiles. This is probably a case of "[[CelibateHero thinks love is a distraction]]", since he seems to focus almost completely on his fighting ability. Alternatively, Zoro may simply [[{{Asexual}} not care about sex and romance in general]]. May also have something to do with his first female friend, Kuina, dying on him.
* '''{{Badass}}''': One of the more prominent examples in the series.
** BadassArmFold: [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zoroblood.jpg In this pic,]] which completely cements his {{Made Of Iron}} credentials.
** BadassBaritone: He has the deepest voice in the crew, and is undeniably BadAss.
** BadassBoast: From chapter 642:
--> '''Zoro:''' You want to kill me?! You couldn't even kill my '''boredom'''!
** He also made a spectacularly badass one as a ''child'' which doubles as ThePromise when reacting to Kuina's death:
-->'''Zoro:''' I'll become the world's greatest swordsman, I'll become so famous, my name will heard out even in Heaven!"
** Makes another one in Chapter 754:
--> '''Zoro:''' I'm the man who will one day be this world's greatest swordsman! You were never in my league to begin with!
** BadassLongcoat: After the two-year timeskip.
** BadassNormal: He's the second-strongest member of the crew, pretty much on par with Luffy, and yet he doesn't have any Devil Fruit powers; his power comes from sheer skill and training. In fact, he can take on and defeat Devil Fruit users.
*** EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler:He tapped into his potential for Haki during the timeskip.]]
* BerserkButton:
** Don't try to hurt Chopper. It'll make the big guy decide to go back on his policy not to fight for revenge.
** Insulting Robin is another good way to get your ass kicked. '''Hard'''.
** Really, Zoro just seems to care for the crew as much as anybody else. Messing with any of their friends is a pretty good way to anger any given Straw Hat.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Out of all the crew, it's ''Chopper'' he seems to have a huge soft spot for.
* BigBrotherMentor: To a degree, towards Luffy.
* BigDamnHeroes: He often jumps out of nowhere to save someone at unexpected moments. He saved Vivi from being blown up by Mr.5, shielded Nami from Mr.1's attack, stopped Kuma from taking Luffy, and [[spoiler:post TimeSkip, stopped King Neptune's Trident.]]
** [[spoiler:He stopped Hyouzou from attacking Robin. However, considering Robin's lack of concern prior to his intervention and Zoro's offhanded apology over it, the two probably see this particular example more as Zoro stealing Robin's kill than this trope.]]
* BloodierAndGorier: His fights compared to the others ''as well as his own''.
* BloodKnight: Mostly apathetic to everything around him, but once you say you want to fight, voila! You got his interest!
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: In episode 223 of the anime.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower
* CloudCuckooLander: You wouldn't guess it from his usual demeanor, but Zoro just has some moments of total daffiness, and is completely serious during all of them. He yells like Tarzan while swinging on a vine. When Nami has trouble swinging, [[GenreSavvy he claims it's because she "didn't do the call"]]. When he's being turned into a wax statue, [[StabTheSky he raises his sword into the air]] and advises everyone to [[DyingMomentOfAwesome strike a pose]].
** Feet stuck in wax? Handcuffed to someone? ''Cut off the offending body part''. It's not like the doctor can't put it back on anyway!
* TheCoatsAreOff: Zoro removed the top part of his coat when he got serious in the battle on Fishman Island.
* TheComicallySerious
* CreepyGood: Zoro is one of only two members of the Straw Hats known to have killed in the past. Zoro is willing to chop his own feet off to join a fight and creeps the others out with his sheer determination and willpower, not to mention his monstrous strength.
** Usopp, Nami, and Chopper frequently find him "creepy" or "nuts" depending on the situation.
* CutenessProximity: Adequately explains his huge soft spot for Chopper.
* DeadpanSnarker: Zoro has a really dry wit, and has thrown out some pretty badass {{Pre Asskicking One Liner}}s.
* DeathGlare: Not as prominent as Luffy's but he can pull it off. In fact he managed to [[spoiler:beat Monet, a ''logia'' user, by this alone to the point she was frozen in fear and couldn't reassemble herself after he cut her.]]
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Zoro's ultimate goal.
* {{Determinator}}: You ''really'' can't keep this guy down.
** His fight against Mr. 1 comes to mind. You must see the amount of punishment Zoro endured during that fight to believe it.
* DiagonalCut: Most notably, how he finished off Mr. 1.
* DumbMuscle: Downplayed, as Zoro has shown decent judgement and wisdom. However, aside from Luffy, he's the only crew member to not have an additional skill outside of combat, NoSenseOfDirection, drifts towards being CloudCuckoolander, and was the last person to get Luffy's [=3D2Y=] message.
* EmbarrassingRescue: [[spoiler: Tashigi finds his help ''really'' embarrassing.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While he isn't evil, Zoro is pretty merciless, and not above killing or injuring the {{Mook}}s he encounters. However, even he is visibly disgusted by Crocodile's willingness to murder an entire country of innocents for personal gain, angrily snarling ''The term "not-human" was created to describe scum such as you.''
* EyepatchAfterTimeskip: Subverted. He hasn't been shown to use an eyepatch (so far), but he did come out of the time-skip missing an eye. This has yet to be explained.
* FantasticFightingStyle: his Three-Sword Style.
* FightingSpirit: This is basically how his ''Asura'' technique works.
* {{Flanderization}}: Relatively minor case. What started out as having a bad sense of direction eventually becomes being so directionally incompetent that in the G8 arc he even manages to bend time and space through the power of getting lost.
* Foil: As TheLancer, he's a neat contrast to Luffy in many ways; a former bounty hunter with an outwardly stern and menacing disposition, who in most instances should be an enemy to Luffy.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Sort of. An octopus was seen stuck on him when he came back up from inspecting a shipwreck. Later, a South Bird was staying near him (though it was to get his food). Chopper, a half-reindeer, usually clamps on his head when he's scared.
* FullPotentialUpgrade: Yubashiri and Kitetsu III were this, as a filler episode's flashback showed Zoro having a tendency to break his second and third swords until he got them.
* FunWithHomophones: All of his attack names ''read'' menacingly... but ''[[IncrediblyLamePun sound]]'' [[IncrediblyLamePun like the names of food]]. So his basic attack "[[{{Youkai}} oni]] [[DiagonalCut giri]]" means "demon slash"... but sounds like onigiri ("rice-ball").
** AccidentalPun: Well, probably.
** IncrediblyLamePun
** LostInTranslation: His puns are probably the worst offenders of [[WorldOfPun all the overlooked Japanese-only puns]] in One Piece.
* GogglesDoNothing: He did attempt to use them once, in order to shield his eyes from an enemy's flash attacks. This did little good, given that the goggles aren't tinted.
* HeavySleeper: This guy can sleep ''anywhere'' at ''any time'', even sleeping through a storm like it was smooth sailing.
** Or during a snow storm, he doesn't even wake up after being thoroughly COVERED in SNOW; he's even wearing short sleeves.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Offers his life in exchange for Luffy's before a [[TooPowerfulToLive nigh unbeatable foe]]. Instead, said foe allows him to take in all of Luffy's pain and exhaustion, which was supposed to be a traumatic enough experience to kill him. [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat Naturally, it doesn't]]. Keep in mind, this was all the pain and exhaustion from someone ''made of rubber''. Everything that he was able to endure thanks to his Devil Fruit powers, forced into a (technically) normal human body.]]
** AND, all this was forced into him ON TOP of his own, already superhuman, damage.
* HighPressureBlood: Has an infinite supply of it.
* HollywoodHealing: [[http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=226 "Band-aids heal everything."]]
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: Implied to be a source of angst involving the best friend he never got over. It's especially heart-wrenching when you consider that the other Straw Hats were at least assured they were unconditionally cared about by their own loved ones, no matter how tragic the circumstances.
* IfIWantedYouDead: A rare non-villain example. [[spoiler:When he fights Monet, she knows he can use Haki and in one attack vertically cuts her in half but holds back on the Haki to not kill her. She knows she should be dead and this near-death experience brought on a fear that is enough to keep her from properly reforming.]]
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Who else can sword-swing with their mouth?
* ImprobableAge: One of the biggest badasses in the series is 19?
** He's 21 now, but has the maturity and appearence of someone who's at least 27.
*** Possibly a ShoutOut to ''RurouniKenshin'', where the main character is a swordsman approaching his thirties who looks as though he's still in his twenties (Eiichiro Oda worked as an assistant on Rurouni Kenshin).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Why do you think he carries three at a time?
* [[spoiler: KiAttacks]]: [[spoiler:As revealed by Luffy, he can now use Haki after the time-skip. We don't know yet which type of Haki he specializes in, though.]]
** [[spoiler:He used Busoshoku Haki to cut [[AnIcePerson Monet's]] cheek, ''[[SwordBeam at long range]]''. Its also implied he can use Kenbunshoku Haki.]]
* TheLancer: To Luffy, again.
* LetsGetDangerous: When the bandanna comes on, Zoro will usually use some crazy attack that destroys his opponent, and usually the environment around them. Lampshaded during Enies Lobby.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: An interesting case where the villains barely had to do anything to provoke Luffy into fighting Zoro at Whiskey Peak. They had all been beaten up by Zoro and Luffy was mistakenly led to believe that Zoro did this for the fun of it, when the villains were "nice" to him and the crew beforehand, giving them food and partying with them, all the while waiting for the chance to kill them all.
* LightningBruiser: His physical strength is equal to Luffy's, and he can react fast enough to dodge ''bullets'' fired at ''point-blank range''.
** [[spoiler:Post time skip: He's faster than a Fishman, ''while underwater''.]]
* MadeOfIron: To a mind-blowing extent. Zoro is the trope image for a reason. He refuses to be incapacitated even after Mr. 1 practically puts him through a meatgrinder. This is most noticeable in the anime, which often downplays how badly Luffy and others are hurt in their fights – it is kinda hard to do with Zoro, as he almost always fights swordsmen.
* {{Mangst}}: He still carries [[MementoMacGuffin Wado]] [[TragicKeepsake Ichimonji]] everywhere.
* MartialPacifist: While never one to even "try" to avoid a fight, Zoro rarely, if ever, starts one, despite his rather BloodKnight like nature. After the time skip Zoro even starts to refuse to fight people he deems weaker than himself, and those he does fight he tries to make give up by destroying their weapons or intimidating the hell out of them. That said if his opponent still comes at him or the other Straw Hats and allies he will take them out.
* MasterSwordsman: Zoro's ultimate goal. [[spoiler:He was also trained by a MasterSwordsman – Dracule "Hawk Eye" Mihawk.]]
* MeaningfulName: His surname is based on that of real-life pirate [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_l%27Olonnais François l'Olonnais,]] notable among other things for ''[[AxCrazy cutting out an enemy's heart]] [[AndShowItToYou and biting into it in front of him]] [[TerrorHero mid-fight]]''.
* MrFanservice: Qualifies in most areas, most notably that he looks ''great'' with his shirt off, which happens [[ShirtlessScene more often than not]].
* MultiWielding: He often ''triple-wields'' katanas, with one in each hand and one [[CutlassBetweenTheTeeth in his]] ''[[CutlassBetweenTheTeeth mouth]]''. This being anime, of course, it's always quite effective, as absurd as it would be in real life. It goes even farther, however, with Zoro eventually learning to ''nonuple-wield'' – that is, use nine swords at once, or at least create the appearance of this. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], since Zoro's style isn't nearly as effective unless he uses three swords.
* NervesOfSteel: Reacts pretty calmly to situations. Justified as Zoro's belief in fate leads him to leave things to luck.
* NeverGetsDrunk: One of the greatest examples. Zoro can hold ridiculous amounts of alcohol. Even after out-drinking thirteen people, Zoro went on to fight ''one hundred trained assassins'' at Whiskey Peak with no problems whatsoever. He didn't even have a hangover next morning.
** Chapter 669: [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji]] [[spoiler:[[FreakyFridayFlip (in Nami's body)]]]], and [[DemBones Brook]] all get hit by a sleeping gas that is somehow supposed to use alcohol to knock out even the heaviest of drinkers. Zoro does end up falling asleep from the fumes, but it also takes him longer than Sanji or Brook to succumb; long enough that he can slice a needle-laden mountaintop that they're headed toward in half so that they don't all die or get horribly injured.
* NoBadassToHisValet: To the world, Zoro is a monstrously powerful swordsman with an intense amount of bloodlust and potential, and second to one of the most dangerous pirates on the Grand Line. To the rest of the crew, he's their meathead of a swordsman who's capable of getting lost in a ''straight hallway'' and is only marginally smarter than their reckless idiot of a captain.
* NominalHero: Sometimes. He ''is'' one of most vicious of the Straw Hats, having no qualms with lethal force. Later on, though, he will sometimes go out of his way to help innocent bystanders.
* NoSenseOfDirection: This man is capable of getting lost in a ''[[RunningGag straight hallway]]''.
** This man is capable of getting lost when a door ''[[UpToEleven was in front of him]]''.
** This man is capable of getting lost when it shouldn't be ''[[UpToEleven physically]] [[RuleOfThree possible]]''.
** At one point, Chopper got so fed up with his lack of direction that he offered to make Zoro a medication for '''[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6YWikAsteI hopeless idiocy]]'''.
** And when he wants to get away from someone, he'll end up running into them anyway.
** Even the zombie that had his shadow got lost when following a large group of zombies.
** When he's told to go south, he goes the opposite direction. [[BeyondTheImpossible While in the company of a bird whose head will only ever point south.]] And when he's told to go north, he immediately starts ''climbing a building'', thinking "north" means "up".
* NotWorthKilling: [[spoiler:He could've easily killed Monet if he used Haki, but he didn't, deciding that leaving her with her resolve just as broken as her body was enough. However, he did say to Tashigi after she cut her down, that he'd have finished her off himself]].
* NumberTwo: In times of emotional crisis for the crew, he's taken responsibility of the crew and reminds Luffy of his duties as a captain, solidifying his position as this. This is most obvious in regards to Luffy's duel with Usopp.
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler: Post TimeSkip, he managed to defeat most of the Neptune Army soldiers by himself, and after his capture, he plans to do the same with Hordy's men now. Even Usopp [[LampshadeHanging calls him one.]]]]
** Much earlier, in one of the more awesome moments of the series, he single-handedly defeated 100 expert bounty hunters in Whiskey Peak.
* OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank: To [[SerialEscalation an increasingly ridiculous degree]].
** In the 5th movie, the villain says his Cursed Sword will drink all of Zoro's blood. Poor thing probably would have exploded from overfill.
** They made fun of this in Episode 523. They showed Zoro looking at ''nine pint bags of blood'' that were being transfused into Sanji, angling as if ''he had given it all''.
* ParentalAbandonment: There has been no mention of his parents at all. All we know is that he trained at the dojo at a young age.
* PerpetualFrowner: Zoro used to smile and laugh quite frequently in early arcs. This changed after his defeat at the hands of Mihawk. Since then, he kind of developed a bad temper as pointed out by Sanji in the Arlong arc.
** Debatable, but it seems he got better post-Time Skip.
** He's also prone to smiling and laughing during the parties the Straw Hats and friends have at the end of most arcs.
* PetTheDog: He has his moments with kids. He's not usually ''trying'', but they're there.
* PowerGlows: Occasionally, he will glow when he performs any of his more potent attacks as well as creating illusions, thought of by Kaku as being the power of his spirit.
* PreMortemOneLiner:
** To Kaku:
--->'''Zoro (''to Kaku''):''' Bring on the hardship. It's preferred on the path to carnage!
** To Monet:
--->[[spoiler:'''Zoro:''' (''to Monet'') Have you ever seen a wild beast, that is never guaranteed to bite a person? I haven't.]]
** [[spoiler: Subverted, because he actually didn't intend to kill her, just leave her broken so she won't be able to endanger his crew-mates. She might as well have been dead though]].
* QuitYourWhining: Says this to Chopper after he gets forcibly taken into Foxy's crew as a result of the Straw Hats losing the first round of the Davy Back Fight.
* RatedMForManly: Taken as far as possible.
* RazorWind: His Tatsumaki and Pound Hou techniques.
** [[spoiler:After the TimeSkip, his Tatsumaki gets mixed with DoNotTouchTheFunnelCloud as well.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Luffy's red.
** Post-TimeSkip: [[spoiler:In an extended scene in episode 519 of the anime, when [[VitriolicBestBuds he and Sanji]] [[VolleyingInsults start fighting]], Zoro has a blue aura and Sanji has a red one. The [[PlayedForLaughs battle fury is so intense]] that all that is seen are the two {{Battle Aura}}s colliding with each other. [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome A shame we don't see the actual fight]], since it would've spoiled the {{Canon}} reveals of their new post-TimeSkip [[TookALevelInBadass abilities]].]]
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: He has no skills beyond fighting (and drinking). While all of the other Straw Hats have responsibilities like medicine, navigation or sharpshooting with the cannons, the only thing he does is guard the ship and try not to get lost.
* ScarsAreForever: An enormous one spanning his chest, courtesy of Mihawk. During the timeskip, he acquired one over his eye, which he seems to have lost.
* SlasherSmile: He shows a great deal of enthusiasm when it comes to getting into fights.
* TheSouthpaw: While it is clear that Zoro is ambidextrous, he seems to be predominantly left-handed. He keeps all of his swords sheathed next to his right hip, meaning it would be easier to pull a sword with his left hand. When wielding a single sword, Zoro usually uses his left hand. His single sword techniques have nearly always been executed with his left hand.
** Also, in Movie 5, in his fight against Saga, Saga stabbed Zoro's left hand after telling him that he had "lost his dominant sword hand in battle."
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Officially, it is "Zoro". All Japanese material and the Funimation dub/subs confirm this. However, the 4Kids dub and Viz's manga spell it "Zolo". It was heavily implied the change was made because someone on the production team worried about being sued by the "owners" of ''Franchise/{{Zorro}}''[[labelnote:†]] (sarcasm quotes because a judge declared Zorro to be a PublicDomainCharacter back in the 90's, but no one is willing to admit it)[[/labelnote]], who is moss-head's namesake. Still, the FanWank over this grew to a ridiculous extreme; it's one of the biggest backlashes in the history of Western anime fandom.
* TheStoic: He's a lot more reserved than most of the crew, often taking negative events without losing his composure. He's often the crew's voice of reason.
** NotSoStoic: However, [[TheComicallySerious this doesn't stop keep him from getting mad at]] [[IdiotHero Luffy]], [[CowardlyLion or]] [[HandsomeLech the]] others.
*** Also when getting hit by Perona's Hollow-Hollow Fruit power.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: After Luffy's explanation on the difference between pirates and heroes – heroes share meat, pirates don't – which Zoro was not there to hear, Zoro gives an incredibly similar analogy, except he substitutes booze for meat.
* [[AxCrazy Sword Crazy]]: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC8T1i3inHs The accusations may be justified]]. [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]], though.
** Well, if [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic certain names of his attacks ''are'' symbolic]], it's actually very possible he's not quite right in the head.
** Zoro seems quite aware that he's crazy. However, as stated, ''he'' is the only one allowed to call himself that.
* TerrorHero: Zoro paralyzes his enemy by a display of strength and pure killing intent. The enemy is [[spoiler:Monet from Punk Hazard arc]].
* ToBeAMaster: His goal is to become [[MasterSwordsman "the greatest swordsman in the world"]].
* ToughLove: Toward Chopper, when lecturing him on the consequences of being a pirate during the Davy Back Fight, and to [[spoiler:Usopp, forcing the sniper to swallow his pride, apologize for his selfishness, and beg before being allowed back on the crew at the end of the Enies Lobby arc.]]
* TragicKeepsake: Wado Ichimonji, his only consistent sword, used to belong to his childhood friend/rival Kuina, and after her death he uses it to remind himself of their promise to become great swordsmen.
* TrashTalk: Zoro is the Straw Hat Pirates' resident trash talker in a fight. He enjoys telling his opponents things like "The reason you've never lost is because you've never met me", and of course, he always gives out a "Post Asskicking One-Liner", in which he usually comments on how his opponents were a mere stepping stone for him.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Sanji. The two make quite an impressive team... When they're not fighting, arguing, or hurling insults at each other (which is to say, most of the time).
* VolleyingInsults: Gets into this quite frequently with Sanji.
* WeaponOfChoice: His three [[KatanasAreJustBetter katanas]]: Wado Ichimonji, Kitetsu III, and Shuusui. He's consistently had Wado Ichimonji, but had gone through several other swords before getting his current remaining pair.
** ILikeSwords
*** CutlassBetweenTheTeeth: His fighting style relies on it.
*** EvilWeapon: Kitetsu III's curse has lead all its previous owners to violent deaths. Zoro sees it as a problem child, but he is too sword-crazy to back away from the challenge.
*** FlamingSword: Yaki Oni Giri (Flaming Demon Slash). Used once with actual fire, and in one of the [[TheMovie movies]] with magic fire. He also stated that he would love a flaming sword as a weapon.
*** LickingTheBlade: He does this a couple of times. Not surprisingly, there was much [[{{Squee}} squeeing]] from the [[FanGirl female fanbase]].
*** SwordSparks: Again, his fight with Mr. 1.
* WhatExactlyIsHisJob: {{Fanon}} typically pegs him as the First Mate, but this has not been explicitly confirmed in-story (yet). Luffy took him on board because he wanted a 'champion' in his crew, especially if he's the future "World's Greatest Swordsman" to balance out the future Pirate King. But then it loops back around because apparently being crew champion entails fighting slightly less than the captain and more than the cook.
** He was the first to join Luffy, and he certainly ''acts'' like a NumberTwo sometimes, though he's just as likely to be bossed around by Nami as vice-versa. The World Government seems to consider him such, even if the Straw Hats don't.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Zoro fully intended to sacrifice himself as part of a deal with Kuma to spare the rest of the Straw Hats. When he made this deal, he was under the assumption that everyone else was unconscious.
* WhenHeSmiles: He can be a very handsome man. [[SlasherSmile Or a very scary man.]]
* WisdomFromTheGutter: Zoro is ''the one'' to impart knowledge about how a pirate should behave within their group; aspects such as respect, roles and trust are brought up by him when the Straw Hats are in the middle of some inner conflict as seen during the Davy Back Fight and Water 7. Interesting to note is that Zoro only does this when Luffy, the Captain, isn’t the one voicing this out or he is also participating in the turmoil; the exact course of action a First Mate would take, if they ever had one.
* TheWorfEffect: Often loses to a character, such as Buggy, Mihawk, Arlong, Eneru, Rob Lucci, Oars & Moria, Kuma, and Isshou in order to show how powerful they are.
** WorfHadTheFlu: On the other hand, a good chunk of those opponents were immune to swords, to varying degrees. Buggy can't be cut at all because swords only disconnect his floating body parts. In Arlong's case, Zoro was recently really run through the gauntlet, had already been in a fight, and was using a type of sword he wasn't used to, so it was hardly surprising there. Eneru is made out of [[ShockAndAwe pure electricity]], so he couldn't be touched by anyone except Luffy. Kuma doesn't count; he didn't just beat Zoro, he ''curbstomped the entire Straw Hat crew and everyone else''.
* WouldHitAGirl: He will cut a girl if he has to.
** WouldntHitAGirl: Somewhat played with. His childhood friend Kuina may have been the only girl that he was willing to fight seriously. In [[spoiler:his fight with Monet at Punk Hazard]], Tashigi claims that Zoro is holding back due to a [[PoliticallyIncorrectHero dismissive attitude towards women]]. [[spoiler:Subverted, after proving to Monet that he will cut a girl if necessary.]]
*** To be fair though, all of that is just Tashigi assuming, and she has a history of throwing such comments around. Back in Whiskey Peak, Zoro did knock out a bounty hunter posing as a nun with the broad end of his sword (even apologizing for it) and beat Miss Monday by simply knocking her out with a face palm. So more or less, he won't cut a woman unless absolutely necessary, but has no problem using blunt force against them.
*** And the real reason Tashigi holds that opinion is because of Zoro's inability to fight her prior to the TimeSkip. However, the main reason Zoro wouldn't fight her is because of her similarities to Kuina, both physically and personality-wise. This is something that she has absolutely no knowledge of (though he kinda told her), and hence her belief that he has a dismissive attitude towards women.
* YouCanBarelyStand: Happens to him ALL the time, with his [[OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank fight with Mr. 1]] being a defining example.
** Also the Kuma incident at Thriller Bark. [[spoiler:Zoro took in ''all the pain Luffy had accumulated during his fights with Oars and Moria''. The entire area around him was covered in blood afterwards, and Zoro, though still standing and unflinching, looked like he was ready to die on the spot.]]
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Green Hair]]: Sanji likes to make fun of him this way, calling him "Marimo" (Moss Head).
* YoungerThanHeLooks: Can you believe that somebody who [[MrFanservice looks]] [[ShirtlessScene like]] [[RuleOfSexy that]] is 19 ([[TimeSkip later 21]])? Of course, he drinks like a fish, and has been [[TrainingFromHell training]] himself for about half his life to kick ass.

[[folder:"Cat Burglar" Nami]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nami_9910.png
-->''"What good is treasure if I'm all alone? I'd rather have nothing at all!"''

->Voiced by: Creator/AkemiOkamura (JP)[[note]] (briefly replaced by Creator/WakanaYamazaki when Okamura went on maternity leave)[[/note]], Creator/MegumiToyoguchi (JP, OVA); Creator/LuciChristian (EN, Funi), Kerry Williams (EN, 4Kids); Georgina "Gina" Sánchez (Latin American Spanish)

The eighteen/[[TimeSkip twenty]]-year-old navigator of the Straw Hats, Nami was initially introduced as a thief who detested pirates and stole from them. Her years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. Despite these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, [[OnlySaneWoman though they do get on her nerves from time to time]], and their journey would have been nigh impossible without her near-supernatural abilities to read the ocean currents and predict weather phenomena, leading some to wonder if she's actually a witch. She uses a weapon called the Clima-Tact, later upgraded to the Perfect Clima-Tact and currently the Sorcery Clima-Tact.

Her dream is to draw a map of the world, which she was unable to realize until Luffy managed to free her and her island from the tyrannical rule of the [[FishPeople Fishman]] pirate Arlong. She owes a great deal to the others and especially Luffy for this, and is often the only member of the crew other than Zoro to personally confront or remind him of the deep, gut-wrenching choices that he must face.

Her bounty is 16,000,000 Berries.
-----
* ActionGirl: Not at first, but starts growing into the role after being given her Clima Tact.
* AntiHero: Starts off as not willing to kill, but fine with putting pirates in situations where they are certain to die due to her past.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: She's one of the few characters able to render Luffy a bruised and bloody mess. WordOfGod says that it's because her blows are "emotionally and spiritually charged".
* AuthorAppeal: Oda is HappilyMarried to Chiaki Inaba, the actress who played her in the ''Jump Festa'' stage performances. Oda thinks his wife is incredibly sexy (and let's be fair, she ''is'' very pretty), and as a kind of tribute to her, altered Nami's design to show it off.
* BadassAdorable
* BadassNormal: No Devil Fruit powers, but the Clima-Tact more than makes up for it.
* BareYourMidriff: A few of her outfits sport this, but [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/4/48/2yearNami.jpg her first timeskip design is the most evident case of this.]]
* BathingBeauty: Gets a few of these scenes occasionally.
** Now a part of the most recent open, complete with [[AccidentalPervert Luffy & Usopp barging in and getting whacked]].
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Double-subverted. The serious damage she recieves during her more intense fights does show, but as soon as the fights are over, in any of the more minor battles, and in the long run overall, her skin is absolutely flawless.
* BerserkButton: Do not spend money without consulting her first. Do not steal anything from her, especially if she stole it first. Don't call her a witch. Don't insult her good looks. Never hurt her tangerine trees. Don't argue with her. Don't humilate and/or insult her. And, above all else, do not hurt the people she cares about. Simply put, ''[[FieryRedhead don't try to piss Nami off]]''.
* CantCatchUp: Usopp somewhat fixes this problem for her. She's not quite as strong as her crewmates, but she's got a respectable record, taking out Miss Doublefinger from Baroque Works and Kalifa from [=CP9=].
* CatFight: Gets into these all the time, but her fight with Kalifa in which Nami herself is scantily clad and getting rubbed all over [[FanService by the just-as-buxom, fishnet-fond Kalifa using her]] [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum "Slippery wet soap powers"]] takes the cake.
* CowardlyLion: Less than Chopper and Usopp, but she does not have the fear immunity that the rest of the crew have. This is justified out of pragmatism than anything else, since she is completely untrained in physical combat.
* CryCute: Despite the quite massive JerkassFacade she puts on for the first half of the Arlong arc, it's next to impossible not to gain sympathy with her when she breaks down crying due to Arlong's betrayal... She also has several moments in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc, especially regarding Usopp.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Twice. The first was [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/6/6e/W7.jpg in the Water 7 arc]], when she didn't fight at all. The second was [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/a/a6/Nami_PerfectClimaTact.JPG in the Enies Lobby arc]], where she more than proved her worth as an ActionGirl.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The special "Episode of Nami" TV Special that aired between episodes 560 and 561. A retelling of the Arlong Park Arc. [[spoiler:Actually post TimeSkip Nami reminiscing while on their way to Fishman Island]].
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She beats her crewmates up very often.
** She does this significantly less as time goes on, especially after the TimeSkip.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the manga, she first appears in chapter 8. In the anime, however, she makes an appearance in the very first episode, before Luffy himself.
* ElementalPowers
** BlowYouAway: [[spoiler:Enemy face, meet tornado in a stick.]]
** ShockAndAwe: Her Perfect Clima Tact, essentially a super-taser on a stick, can create lightning strikes and other electrical discharges under the right conditions.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: She asked Nojiko to keep her efforts to steal to buy her village back from Arlong a secret, even after Genzo had her banished from the village for joining Arlong Pirates, knowing that the villagers struggled to pay the tribute. It turns out that Genzo, unwilling to believe she'd join the pirates willingly, got Nojiko to tell him the truth, but decided to keep it a secret from Nami so she could run away if she was unable to go on.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In the manga.
* FanServicePack: Over the course of a few hundred chapters/episodes, Nami's physique changed greatly. Her breasts have gradually increased in size, from modest B's to full-blown F's. It's enough to make you think that the story hasn't been in ComicBookTime, but apparently she's just prone to growth spurts. At the ages of 18 and 20. Every other week of her life. And the [[PerversesexualLust fans]] [[RuleThirtyFour rejoiced]].
** Well, technically G-cup to I-cup to J-cup, according to WordOfGod, but the same logic applies. (note that Japanese bra cup sizes scale differently than American ones; translated, her breast size is still absurd, but not impossible)
** And keep in mind, this is the same universe where pathetic-looking runts (Coby) turn into outright [[{{Bishonen}} bishonens]] in less than a year (albeit with training), and where ordinary-sized children grow into 22-foot-tall monstrosities (Moriah). And both are human.
* FieryRedhead: One of the more [[{{Tsundere}} emotional]] members of the crew. "True to her looks, she's so bold!"
* FireIceLightning: The [[WeatherControlMachine Clima-Tact's]] most basic function is to create three types of air bubbles named the Heat Ball, Cool Ball, and Thunder Ball. It used to be a slight subversion in that with the first version of the Clima-Tact, the Heat and Cool Balls were useless as attacks, and tended to be used for weather manipulation only. Once it got upgraded, the Heat and Cool Balls became strong enough to inflict damage to enemies (albeit relatively minor damage) in their base form.
* {{Gainaxing}}: In the 7th movie, sometimes they bounce wildly when she moves very little.
** It's also the case in the 12th movie. [[spoiler:Though you could argue this is compensating for the fact that she spends most of the movie as a kid.]]
* {{Greed}}: One of her main traits.
* GuileHeroine: Her usual approach; when she first meets Luffy, she calls him [[HilariousInHindsight "Boss"]] to [[LetsYouAndHimFight get the guys chasing her off her tail]].
* HotWitch: Often called a witch, with her weather control capabilities and seductive nature.
* HypocriticalHumor: Nami doesn't trust Robin when she first joins, and calls Luffy, Chopper, and Sanji idiots for being easily swayed by Robin to allow her to join up despite her history with Crocodile. She then goes to tell Robin that she herself won't be as easily swayed as she doesn't trust her. However, as soon as Robin casually offers up a bag of gems, Nami does a complete 180 and gets easily swayed.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Emphasizing the jerk, at first. She can be selfish, manipulating [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and rude]], but there's no doubt she cares about her friends.
** She gradually [[TookALevelInKindness outgrows this behaviour]] [[CharacterDevelopment over the course]] of the series. By the time the TimeSkip rolls around, she rarely acts this way anymore (towards her friends, at least) unless they're asking for it.
* JerkassFacade: Acted like this during the Arlong arc to try to prevent the Straw Hats from interfering in her business with Arlong, but it came [[TearJerker crumbling down]] along with her attempts to resolve the situation herself.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Usually the light to Robin's dark. Can be zigzagged though, as while Nami is more bubbly and girly than Robin, she is much less [[ProperLady ladylike]], and she even has her moments where she is cold and aloof while Robin shows curiosity and childish imagination.
* [[spoiler:LittleMissBadass: In the twelvth movie, after [[FountainOfYouth she was temporarily turned into a kid]] by Ain.]]
** [[spoiler:LittleMissConArtist: She takes advantage of that to trick some Marine soldiers into giving her info about Z.]]
* LongHairIsFeminine: Post-TimeSkip.
* LovableRogue: While not a villain, Nami is known for being a thief, but she's still a lovable person.
* MamaBear: When faced with the imprisoned children of Punk Hazard begging to be taken back to their families, the rest of the crew (Sanji in particular) remain indifferent to their plight (Though Chopper and Franky did want to go back too, they considered it too reckless). Nami however, is the ''first'' to take a stand for them, and her fervor in protecting Caesar Clown's young victims eventually inspires and awakens the dormant conscience of her friends.
--> '''Sanji:''' Hey, what the hell do you mean Nami? They're not our problem! We're not Samaritans who go around saving people!\\
'''Nami:''' I know we're not! But when little kids are begging and crying for you to help them, you CAN'T just leave them and do nothing!
* MeaningfulName: Her name means "wave", and she is, after all, a navigator on a ship...
* {{Meganekko}}: Sometimes when she's at work.
* MetaGal: Spends a lot of her early appearances reacting to Luffy and Zoro's inhuman abilities. Actually, almost everyone falls into this role when introduced to the wackiness of the Straw Hat Crew, but the more human members (like Nami) keep it up longer. Like most of the other characters, she now reacts to how strange the people that the Straw Hats meet are instead.
* MoneyFetish: She's such a classic case that she's the current image for that page. See [[MrViceGuy Ms. Vice Girl]] below.
* MsFanservice: Most conventional in the world, as she's… stacked, [[{{Gainaxing}} bouncy]], [[TheTease flirtatious]], and [[BareYourMidriff rarely covers her stomach]].
** Now after the time skip we have… [[WalkingSwimsuitScene bikini top]], low-riding pants that expose her hips and upper crotch-lines, high heels, and [[LongHairIsFeminine much longer and free-flowing hair]].
*** Taken up to eleven in the "Glorious Island" movie tie-in; most of the focus is on Nami bouncing around in a tiny bikini.
*** Her wardrobe seems to shrink for each story arc as she's down to the bikini top and [[WhoWearsShortShorts short shorts]] in the Dressrosa storyline.
* MsViceGirl: She is obsessed with money and often cons other characters (including her own crewmates) out of their hard-earned cash. Despite this, her good qualities still outweigh her greed. In the Arlong Park arc, it's shown exactly why she's so fixated on getting rich. The habit doesn't exactly die after the fact, but she slowly gets better about it, at least.
* MundaneUtility: Weather control makes a great weapon. It also makes showering anywhere a lot easier.
* TheNavigator: Also good at drawing maps.
* NeverGetsDrunk: Nami can hold her liquor just fine. She out-drinks fifteen people and goes on like it was nothing. She may even be better than Zoro, as she actually outdrank more than him.
** Slightly subverted by the fact that while she did indeed drink more than Zoro when they were greeted at Whiskey Peak, beating him by two, she drank herself into a complete drunken pass-out. Zoro stopped because he never drinks himself out of his senses, but its implied that if he kept going, Nami would passout before him.
** She actually does get a little tipsy in the Fishman Island arc, but not outright drunk.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Gets her fair share of this. She can be just as goofy as the rest of the crew.
** She sometimes uses Luffy's off-the-wall nicknames for people, i.e. "Weird Knight" for Gan Fall and "Tra-guy" for Trafalgar Law.
* OnlySaneWoman: Has bemoaned how their crew always seems to attract the weird ones.
* OutOfFocus: Her dream as a child was to drawn maps of all places she visited, and eventually a World Map itself; Arlong made her dream a nightmare, but when Nami parted ways with her village to join Luffy's crew, she expressed again her dream to draw maps; since then however, Nami isn't seen drawing maps of any kind – though one may assume that she's doing so ''off-screen'', because the map-making in itself (as opposed to achieving the goal of a ''complete'' World Map) is not necessary to move the plot forward. That said, she can be seen drawing maps in anime filler multiple times, as well as some of the openings and endings.
* PirateGirl: She wasn't ''at all'' proud to work with Luffy at the start of the series due to watching a pirate kill her mother and being basically enslaved by that same pirate at the start of the series. Thanks to Luffy intervening, however, she now embraces her role as a pirate, as it has brought her many great friends and ''lots'' of [[MoneyFetish money]].
* ProudBeauty: She's attractive, she knows it, and knows how to use it to her advantage.
* SandInMyEyes: When she's captured at Weatheria and put in jail for trying to steal meteorological equipment, she reads about [[spoiler: Ace's death]] in the newspaper and breaks down crying, causing her captors to freak out and release her. She quickly reveals that it was just an act, and she makes off with the equipment she stole, along with one of the meteorologists, who notes that she still hasn't stopped crying.
* ScienceHero: Meteorological science.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She isn't ashamed to show her body to others as long as they pay her afterwards.
* ShesGotLegs
* ShouldntYouStopStealing
* ShowSomeLeg: Nami tends to use her charm to her advantage.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Just before the crew entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked who had the highest and lowest IQ of all the characters introduced so far; he replied that Shanks's first mate, Captain Kuro, and Nami were the smartest (in that order), but he couldn't decide which characters were the dumbest because almost every other character is an idiot or a [[CloudCuckooLander space case]].
* TattooedCrook: Very important to her backstory, and hot.
* TheTease: Two words. HAPPINESS PUNCH. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc0KjmZjuXg Observe!]]
* TeenGenius: When we are first introduced to her, she is eighteen and knows the ins-and-outs of sailing various kinds of ships, an almost entirely instinctive knowledge of climatology and meteorology, and an incredible knack at cartography that she had been refining since she was only ten years old. [[WordOfGod Word of God]] states she was the third smartest character introduced in the East Blue Saga. The other two were pirates with years of experience, one being the first-mate of one of the most powerful men in the world. So yeah, she's smart.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Vivi's Girly Girl, though it's all relative as neither is very tomboyish or girly (Vivi's girliness came out once she returned to Alabasta).
** Also the more [[HotBlooded passionate]] and [[{{Tomboy}} headstrong]] of the two ladies aboard the Thousand Sunny, although her hobbies are much more girly than Robin's, which are just... ''weird''.
* TookALevelInBadass: Every time she gets a new Clima Tact (i.e. in Alabasta, Enies Lobby, and after the timeskip), but special mention needs to go to her after the timeskip, where she electrocutes ''a whole bar'', takes down Fishman soldiers (who are 10 times stronger than normal humans, mind you) like they were nothing, and even displays the ability to make herself invisible with mirages to steal a very important document from Fishmen on power-increasing steroids. Also, she is far less of a coward than before: for example, she doesn't even flinch when having a gun pointed against her temple.
* TookALevelInKindness: Slowly as the series has gone on, but particularly after the timeskip. [[spoiler:From forgiving Hatchi, to hugging Usopp and Chopper when they reunite, to even immediately forgiving Jimbei for letting Arlong loose on East Blue,]] she's come a pretty long way from the JerkassFacade she started out with.
** Not to mention, she hits her crewmates far less often after the timeskip.
** Even before the timeskip she showed signs of this. When Robin was rescued and returned to the crew during Enies Lobby, Nami's immediate reaction was to {{glomp}} her.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type A. Gets pissed at the idiotic nature of her crew despite being very close to them; completely understandable, of course.
** Post-TimeSkip, she is a lesser Type A against her male crew mates, but actually more of a Type B against fellow women like Robin (not enemies, of course) and children.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: ...Or as [[Creator/EiichiroOda Oda]] calls it, "The Hidden Nami Valley!"
* WalkingSwimsuitScene: Post TimeSkip.
* WeakButSkilled: Her knowledge of the weather and her tools have gotten her out of tight spots more than once. Note the "weak" here is only in correlation to her crew.
* WeaponOfChoice: Her [[WeatherControlMachine Clima Tact and later Perfect Clima Tact]]. Even later, the Sorcery Clima Tact. Before those she used a normal wooden quarterstaff.
** CoolSword: One of her new techniques is to create a [[spoiler:wind sword]].
** MagicStaff: It even creates small-scale weather effects.
* WeatherControlMachine: Her Clima Tact, to an extent.
* WingdingEyes: Whenever anything related to cash is mentioned.
* YouAreNotAlone: Upon learning [[spoiler:Arlong back stabbed her and stole her fortune she would have used to buy her village's freedom, she starts crying and begs Luffy for help. He simply puts his hat on her head and moves Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp to attack Arlong for making her cry.]]

[[folder:"The King of Snipers" Usopp]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/472629-untitled_62_large_4248.png
-->''"I am the Great Captain Usopp!"''

-->''"The captain is a man who can change lies into the truth!!"''

->Voiced by: Creator/KappeiYamaguchi (JP), Creator/SonnyStrait (EN, Funi), Creator/JasonGriffith (EN, 4Kids)

Usopp serves as the crew's sharpshooter, and previously served as the (barely competent) repairman for the ''Going Merry''. He had a reputation on his home island of being a serial liar who claimed that pirates were attacking, which came back to haunt him when pirates ''[[CryingWolf actually attacked]]''. He's a rather boastful seventeen/[[TimeSkip nineteen]] year-old who likes to tell tall tales (several of which actually are or do come true, after a fashion), though he's more prone to hiding behind the stronger crew members like Zoro when he gets into a fight. However, when push comes to shove he is very dependable. He specializes in the use of a slingshot, called the Galaxy Slingshot (''Ginga Pachinko''), which he replaced with the Kabuto [[spoiler:and later the Black Kabuto]].

His dream is to better himself and become a brave warrior like his father Yasopp, who serves alongside Shanks, Luffy's idol. According to WordOfGod, he is the physically-weakest member of the crew, and his worries about [[CantCatchUp not being able to keep up]] with the stronger members, with the resulting inner turmoil from that, put him at odds with Luffy during one story arc, and ultimately resulted in the creation of an alter ego dubbed Sniper King (''Sogeking'') which he uses to draw on his inner strength and courage.

Sniper King has a bounty of 30 million Berries. Usopp was not personally wanted until the Dressrosa arc, where Donquixote Doflamingo sets an astounding 500 million Berry bounty for Usopp's head.
-----
* AbnormalAmmo: It was one thing to be shooting hot sauce and gas bombs, among other things. [[spoiler:Now he's shooting seeds which instantly grow into ''man-eating plants'']].
* AchillesInHisTent: Water 7 and Enies Lobby, as a result of Luffy changing ships and [[CantCatchUp feeling that he'll always lag behind the others]].
* AllUpToYou:[[spoiler:During the Dressrosa arc, he's the only one left who can defeat Sugar and break the spell on all the humans-turned-toys. Unfortunately, that much pressure causes him to run away but their repeating his lies of his greatness force him to go back, admit the truth, and then try his damnedest to win against Sugar]].
* AllThereInTheManual: His new badassery (despite being the weakest of the crew) actually makes sense when you consider his pedigree. His dad Yasopp is the sniper of an ''Emperor's'' crew.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: One look at his nose should tell you he's a liar.
** A long nose is also evocative of the tengu, mythological creatures notorious for being boastful.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassBeard: He grows a goatee during the TimeSkip.
*** [[http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120714113234/onepiece/images/8/88/Usopp-Film-Z.png One of his outfits]] in ''One Piece Film Z'' gives him a full beard and BadassMoustache. Both fake, of course, but still pretty funny and cool.
** BadassBoast: "I am the great Captain Usopp! I have destroyed entire islands with my 8000 followers!"
*** Now in the manga: [[spoiler:"It's true, I've deteriorated... I used to lie a lot more...NOW I CAN ACTUALLY DO THOSE THINGS!" Hell yeah.]]
*** Subverted in chapter 695: "I'll take on any enemy with their back to us."
** BadassNormal: He doesn't have the superpowers of Luffy or the super strength of Zoro and Sanji, but he's still capable of challenging opponents much stronger than him... when he gathers the courage to do so, that is.
*** It's implied that after the TimeSkip, confronting fearsome opponents is less of a problem for him now.
* BadLiar[=/=]ConsummateLiar: Alternates between these.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[CrowningMomentOfFunny To himself]] with his own alter ego.
** Sniper King saving Robin while she was on the brink of the Gates of Justice certainly counts.
** In Dressrosa, he saves Robin from being stipped naked by gnomes... off-screen. Yeah, that's right! When the gnomes are about to take her clothes, they immidiately stop as one of gnomes tells them to stop. The reason: Usopp lied to them that he is their hero and he mentioned that Robin is his friend. Usopp himself ''doesn't even appear'' in that chapter.
* BondBreaker: The entire argument and fight between himself and Luffy over leaving or keeping a heavily-damaged Merry. Why do you count him here? [[spoiler:The entire debacle happened ''before'' we found out that Merry was sentient.]]
** [[spoiler:Sort of. Usopp ''did'' see the Klabautermann before this, though he was only vaguely aware what it meant.]]
* ButtMonkey: Every now and then.
* CallingYourAttacks: While everyone in the series does this, Usopp occasionally subverts this trope by deliberately ''[[GenreSavvy mis]]''[[GenreSavvy calling his attacks]].
* CantCatchUp: Part of the reason he temporarily leaves the crew.
* CharlieBrownFromOuttaTown: Sniper King.
* ConfusionFu: Mixes a bit of this into his fighting style, including [[CallingYourAttacks calling the wrong attack names]] and randomly attacking his opponents with a Rubber Band Of Doom. Psyching his opponent out is an important part of his fighting style, as when he beats Perona by convincing her he can lift a 10-ton hammer (an inflatable balloon which explodes on impact – by which time she has fainted) and taking out an opponent with one blow from his "5-ton hammer" before that – two frying pans and a stick wrapped in foil.
* CowardlyLion: Once his bravado wears off.
* CrazyPrepared: His fight with Luffy shows us what Usopp can really pull off with a little prep time and prior knowledge of his opponent.
** Then, he made a hundred ways to apologize to him. Spent days doing that. In the end none of them were of any use, but intention is what matters.
** [[spoiler:His boast during his fight with Daruma indicates that he has improved his ability to put together CrazyPrepared-style battle strategies on the fly.]]
* CryingWolf: Comes back to bite him in the ass when pirates really do come to his island.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DisappearedDad: His father Yasopp left his family behind to be part of Shanks's crew, but they don't hold it against him.
* DubNameChange: The French manga has him renamed "Pipo" (a word for "lie") to keep the MeaningfulName.
** The Funimation dub and Viz manga change his alter ego's name to "Sniper King".
** The German anime and manga renamed him Lysop, a reference to the word "lie". Oddly, his name is pronouced as "Lüsop" instead of "Laisop".
** The pronounciation might come from the German word for lie, "Lüge".
* FakeUltimateHero: His tall tales eventually gained him this status in Skypiea, where cover stories show a "Rubber Band Land" (as he'd claimed he'd destroyed the Giant Jack with his "Usopp Rubber Band") featuring a statue of himself looking not unlike Shandian hero Calgara. A running gag is that more and more of his lies come true as the series goes on.
** Sniper King also counts.
---> "On the Sniper Island, I was born. A hundred shots, a hundred hits! Lu lu lala lu Even a mouse's eye, lock on! Even your heart, lock on! The man who came from the Sniper Island lululu lala lu Run away! Sogesogesoge Sogeking!"
** It's gotten even more ludicrous as the Dressrosa arc continues [[spoiler:as he is dubbed "God Usopp", the roof of the weapons factory collapsing is perceived to be his miracle by the gladiator convicts, and Doflamingo issues the highest bounty to him out of the twelve that have been a massive hindrance to his plans for "defeating" Sugar alone]]. [[AscendedFanboy Bartolomeo]] was {{squee}}ing at being in the presence of "Sniper King": the man who set the World Government flag aflame.
* FriendlyTarget: Suffered through this during the Water 7 arc.
* GadgeteerGenius: His main contribution to the crew.
* GagNose: A distinguishing feature and helps liken him to Pinocchio, also famous for lies.
* GreenThumb: [[spoiler:After the TimeSkip, he's able to fire off Pop Green seeds which immediately sprout things ranging from man-eating plants, to seaweed, to bamboo spears.]]
** FantasticFlora: [[spoiler:Some of the Pop Green plants are quite strange, such as a plant that has a bouncy bubble on it and a wolf-shaped bushes, the bulbs of which release ''shock waves'']].
* HeavyVoice: [[spoiler:Has one after gaining weight on the Bowin Islands]].
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:When Doflamingo initiated Birdcage, Usopp expresses relief that he wasn't one of the targets...except Doflamingo was saving the best for last: he ranked Usopp as the ''highest target of them all''.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: He's able to take out soldiers several hundred yards away while standing on the roof of a building that's a good couple hundred feet tall. While it was very windy. With a goddamn slingshot/staff thing.
** Notably, the soldiers he's shooting at point out that even if they were able to aim reliably at this distance, their rifles ''couldn't shoot that far''.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He often alternates between bragging and being either cowardly (when played for laughs) or deeply insecure in his skills (when it isn't). This has lessened with CharacterDevelopment during and after the Water 7 arc.
* KiddieKid: Usopp was introduced as a 17 year old young man who spent his time hanging out with a bunch of 8 year olds and told outrageous lies for no real reason other than the fun of it. Part of his character development is him turning from this into a true man like his father.
* LargeHam: He gets a little theatrical when boasting, but it's when he's being Sogeking that he really begins to ham it up.
* LetsGetDangerous: Sniper King.
** Other Strawhats have fought Luffy, but because of some misunderstanding or starting out as a villain. Usopp is the only one who has ever challenged Luffy to a duel – and taught him the seriousness of being a captain in the process.
* LovableCoward: In Chapter 695, he says this:
--> '''Usopp:'''"Leave all wounded enemies with their backs to us to me!"
* MadeOfIron: Being the weakest doesn't stop him from getting beaten up just as bad as the Monster Trio. Sometimes ''even worse''. [[HeroicSpirit But that usually doesn't stop him.]]
* MagneticHero: It's strange, but there have been a number of times when the Straw Hats would've been screwed without Usopp showing up with new allies. His "8000 followers" boast might actually come true one day.
** [[spoiler:He turned Oimo and Kashi against the Marines at Enies Lobby [[BigDamnHeroes in the nick of time]].]]
** [[spoiler:Now in Dressrosa, he's leading an army of dwarves.]]
*** [[spoiler:After saving the toys, they change back to their original forms and they worship him like Jesus (not the Burgess guy). And they follow his command.]]
* MilesGloriosus: In his introduction chapter.
* MrFanservice: After the timeskip. ''[[HelloNurse Hello]]'', Mansopp!
* NeverBareheaded: He always has some kind of headgear on.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: WordOfGod pegs him as the guy who will always be the weakest of the crew. Lampshaded when [[spoiler:he says he can't keep up with the rest of the crew's "monster" strengths during the Water 7 arc]]
* PaperThinDisguise: Sniper King. Only Luffy and Chopper failed to realize that it was actually him.
* PossessionImpliesMastery: Played straight. Usopp can operate or make wondrous inventions out of anything he can put his hands on, including a cannon (which he'd never operated before), advanced fireworks, and the bizarre "Dials" of Skypiea (which he could never ever have seen or researched). His immediate understanding of any object in his possession would border on [[Series/{{Heroes}} intuitive aptitude]] if he weren't so miserable at making repairs to the ship.
* PunnyName: It's a cross between "uso", the Japanese word for lie, and "{{Aesop}}".
* RunningGag: The "Rubber Band of Doom" attack, consisting of Usopp simply flicking a rubber band at the enemy. Whenever Usopp gets in a long string of attacks, expect the Rubber Band of Doom attack to show up right in the middle.
** Where is Sniper Island? [[spoiler:It's in your heart.]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: A RunningGag of his to haul ass while the gettin's good, and has done so at least once an arc. When he comes back though, he makes it count. [[spoiler:Saving Robin before Spandam can take her through the Gates of Justice and beating Choo during the fight against Arlong's crew are just a few examples.]]
* SmallNameBigEgo: When he lies, he speaks of himself as a MartyStu. Only Chopper ever believes him, though.
* TheStarscream: Parodied. He constantly refers to himself as the captain, but actually feels UndyingLoyalty towards Luffy.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He look like a combination of his mother and father's traits.
* SuperSpeed: While it's not really super-human in itself, he's still a very fast runner. By fast I mean "being as fast as a Pacifista while carrying Zoro".
* TheSmartGuy: He looks like a ditz and occasionally acts like it, but he's come up with some decent plans and tricks to use in battle over the years. During their duel, he even discovered ways to bypass Luffy's innate rubber defense.
* TheStoryteller: He frequently tells stories, and his name is a reference to Aesop.
** There's actually a RunningGag throughout the series of Usopp's stories actually coming true.
* TeamNormal: Along with Nami. Causes some self-worth issues at one point, but he eventually gets over it and becomes an ever-increasingly BadassNormal.
* TenMinuteRetirement: In the [=CP9=] saga.
* TookALevelInBadass: Again, Sniper King.
** Post-timeskip, damn! He has broader shoulders, large biceps, and [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment muscles]], [[GeorgeTakei oh my]]! He still runs away though, when he is scared, but he attacks back, even when he faces creatures.
* TrickBullet: All of his ammunition.
* TroubledFetalPosition: Ended up here at the beginning of the Skypiea saga. Drowning, then falling, might do that to somebody.
* VoiceChangeling: He has a talent for mimicking other people's voices perfectly.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Post TimeSkip.
* WeakButSkilled: Physically the weakest of the crew (WordOfGod says he always will be, no matter what), but he's able to come out on top through a wide array of tools and gadgets.
** The best example of this for Sniper King would be sniping soldiers on top of the tower at Enies Lobby... where the wind was against him and not even guns can fire accurately. At a range guns can't even reach!
** And even better example is how the guy actually held his own against ''Luffy'', the inhuman powerhouse, for a respectable amount of time in their duel using only his intimate knowledge of his captain's fighting techniques and one day to get CrazyPrepared.
** [[spoiler:His tools and gadgets now include summoning man-eating plants. Not to mention he's actually pretty buff now]].
* WeaponOfChoice
** BratsWithSlingshots: It's his primary weapon, after all. Later, he upgrades to the Kabuto, a [[XOnAStick slingshot/staff hybrid]].
*** [[spoiler:His Black Kabuto turns out to be a LivingWeapon, it can change into a carnivorous plant called Chomping Grass that can eat things and spit them back out.]]
** DropTheHammer: The few attacks that don't involve his slingshots seem to be this; a slight subversion in that two of his hammers are anything but deadly. Although both of them seem to have some sort of psychological effect on the target.

Sanji is the crew's [[SmokingIsCool chain-smoking]], nineteen/[[TimeSkip twenty-one]]-year-old chef. [[ChefOfIron There is not a dish he cannot cook]], [[HandsomeLech a pretty girl he will not try to]] [[ChivalrousPervert woo]], [[VolleyingInsults or something he will not argue with Zoro over]]. As a chef, he believes that he cannot afford to harm his hands, and so uses a fighting style which uses [[ExtremityExtremist only his feet]] called the "Black Leg Style" (''Kuroashi no Waza''). He and Zoro argue and fight so regularly that it almost borders on FoeYay.

His dream is to find a legendary patch of sea called All Blue, where one can find species of fish from all over the world. His mentor, former-pirate-turned-restaurant-owner Zeff, is one he shares his dreams with, and Sanji worked under him as a way to pay Zeff back for saving his life when the two were stuck on a rock with barely any food when Sanji was a child.

Sanji has also shown some ButtMonkey tendencies lately, as he's become the butt of an ever-increasing list of jokes, including a ugly, poorly drawn bounty poster that no one has any trouble identifying him with, a man who ''resembles'' said bounty poster coming for revenge, and most recently, Kuma blasting him to an island filled with, of all things, drag queens, leading him to declare that [[IronicHell he is in Hell]]. While there, he learns of a special recipe to make the consumer stronger and trains with the 99 Newkama Kenpo masters.

His bounty is 77,000,000 Berries. He is, however, sometimes unrecognized due to his wanted poster being a poorly-drawn composite sketch.
-----
* ABNegative: It turns out Sanji has a rare blood type. [[spoiler:This becomes extremely problematic when the {{Nosebleed}} after {{Nosebleed}} he'd been suffering and had been PlayedForLaughs after being exposed to real women again caused him to go through all of Chopper's stock of that specific type. As a result, when a mermaid tries to keep him hidden by stuffing him into [[MarshmallowHell Marshmallow Heaven]], he has such an [[HighPressureBlood epic]] gusher that it becomes life-threatening]]. Further complicating the situation was the issue that [[spoiler: due to some latent racism between humans and merfolks, those who had the blood type refused to donate either out of discrimination or fear of the enforcers of the regime.]]
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: The Viz translation of the manga takes his regular attack names (one-word French cooking terms, for the most part), and adds a second word, usually alliterative with the first, to them, resulting in names like "Trompine Treader" and "Mouton Mallet".
* AllAccordingToPlan: He's the tactical mastermind of the crew and pretty much all of his plans work out the way he wants them to. But the most notable incident still is his Mr. Prince, complete with him saying those exact words while smiling deviously
** Enies Lobby deserves special mention as well. Sanji disappeared from the fight, only to reveal later that not only did he rig the aiming of the cannons of several warships to miss the Going-Merry, but he also closed the Doors of Justice to create whirlpools that would make the larger ships stand still, but allow their tinier ship to escape. Given his due with Luffy's exclaim of "ARE YOU A GENIUS?"
* AlmightyJanitor: At least at first. During the Alabasta Arc, he went around kicking ass without even being recognized as a Straw Hat. He wasn't as well known as even Usopp at that point, but he's still in the top three fighters of the crew. It still kinda applies, as despite being Zoro and Luffy's equal in fighting ability, Sanji doesn't have the third highest bounty of the crew; that would be Robin. And worse than that, unlike Luffy or Zoro, his bounty hasn't broken the 100 million mark yet, even though it should have by this point.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: In classic chivalrous fashion. If a woman is in danger, Sanji will ignore his task to save/help her. Examples include running in the ''opposite'' direction of his goal to save the Marine woman Tashigi and deserting a rather important mission on Dressrosa to assist the FemmeFatale Violet.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Despite the above AlmightyJanitor and below Badass instances, Sanji will likely lose his train of thought if a pretty woman comes into his focus. [[spoiler:One instance on the Punk Hazard arc is him chasing to help Nami and Robin but stops when he sees Monet. Not only does he stop, but the Marines who are following him stop as well to comment on how beautiful she is.]]
* {{Badass}}
** BadassBeard: After the TimeSkip.
** BadassInANiceSuit: Quite spiffy looking with that blue pinstripe shirt and classic black suit.
** BadassNormal: Not normal by our standards, but he's the only Straw Hat to not use either a Devil Fruit or a weapon, so he's literally just going with the rest of the crew and fighting with his bare feet.
*** EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler:During the timeskip he discovered Haki]].
** CulturedBadass
* BareFistedMonk: Well it's technically Bare ''Footed'' Monk.
* BerserkButton: Never insult his culinary skills, waste food, mistreat a woman (no matter how evil), or [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dytJmH3GWg steal his dream]] of eating the [[{{Invisibility}} Clear-Clear Fruit (''Suke Suke no Mi'')]].
** Yeah, and saying he can't protect people? Don't do that. Just... don't.
** [[spoiler:Weaponized for his Hell Memories attack.]]
** But most of all? '''NEVER HURT NAMI.'''
* BeyondTheImpossible: Let's face it, no remotely important characters in ''OnePiece'' are remotely realistic, as far as their abilities are concerned.
** But who else goes as far as to perform ''plastic surgery'' in the middle of battle by rapidly kicking their opponent in the face?
** But who else ignites their feet for a special attack without getting burned, while underwater?
* BigDamnHeroes: "Mr. Prince", followed later by "The Hunter".
** [[spoiler: Saving Nami, Chopper and Brook from '''Doflamingo''']]
* {{Bishonen}}: A masculine example.
** A little less Bishonen after he grows out his facial hair during the timeskip, however. The transition from the thin teenage stubble to a full goatee has made him considerably less "young and pretty" looking.
* BondOneLiner: Has a habit of giving these after winning major fights.
* BrooklynRage: In the 4Kids dub, ''and only the 4Kids dub'', Sanji was given a [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV-XdyuQngM&feature=related thick Brooklyn accent and an angry disposition]].
* ButtMonkey
* BurningWithAnger: As a RunningGag he bursts into flames when he's sufficiently enraged.
** [[spoiler:After the TimeSkip, he's weaponized it.]]
* CasanovaWannabe: The chances of him actually sleeping with anyone he's wooed are practically nonexistent.
* CatchPhrase: "Crap" as a prefix (e.g. his nickname for Zeff, "Kuso Jijii", means "Shitty Old Man"). It's almost a tic, since he uses it when describing non-crappy things, like 'dates' with Nami. This pisses her off enormously.
** '''~MELLORINE!!!~'''
*** For a while after the time skip: "IIIII NEEEEED LADYYYYY!"
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: It's strange to think that he once (in the manga at least) almost shot Nico Robin, albeit an instinctive reaction to Vivi being threatened. [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse What ever happened to that pistol, anyway?]]
** He knows he can't hit her, so he grabbed a pistol hoping it would intimidate her. It doesn't work.
** As for the pistol, either it was just owned by the whole crew or Nami took it or had it given to her, because at one point (at least in the anime), Nami is seen holding it while preparing to fend off a possible attack.
** A different thing is [[HandsomeLech how he used to be able to attract women]]. Very, very weird when you look at his more [[CasanovaWannabe recent]] [[ButtMonkey portrayals]].
*** [[spoiler:Actually, it may just be the main cast. Both the [[CreepyCrossdresser New Kamas]] and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.]]
*** [[spoiler:And now, he has actually seemingly succeeded in pulling in a dancer on Dressrosa named Violet; she's actually ''returning'' his advances!]]
** Sanji used to be more reserved and often always irritable, now he's not only high-strung, but he goes into goofy states of mind when involved with women.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Considering his legs are strong enough to casually kick away large sea monsters, he definitely qualifies.
* ChefOfIron: A classic Type 1, and [[BerserkButton he despises Type 3]].
** And 2. He refuses to use kitchen implements in combat, as he considers them tools for preparing food, not weapons. The same philosophy applies to his hands, so he fights using kicks to avoid damaging them. He has only used knives to attack a foe once and only because a technicality allowed him to.
* TheChewToy: Started to become this roughly around Enies Lobby, when he learned Kokoro was a mermaid.
* CookingDuel: Gets into a few in anime {{Filler}}. [[SupremeChef He always wins, of course]].
* DanceBattler: Uses only his feet to fight, resulting in this on occasion.
* DefeatByModesty: [[spoiler:During his (filler) duel against the substitute "Queen" of Kamabakka, he's soon forced to resort only to weak, low kicks because his opponents keeps peeping at his bloomers when he tries to kick him. (Sanji having been forced to wear a dress to get Caroline to fight him.)]]
* [[spoiler:DoubleJump: After the TimeSkip, he can replicate [=CP9=]'s Geppou, except he calls it "Sky Walk", and fly; that's what you get for running away from {{Creepy Crossdresser}}s [[TrainingFromHell for two straight years]].]]
* TheDulcineaEffect: To the point that he later develops a "damsel-in-distress" sixth sense.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim:
** Duval's slip of the tongue reveals he's got a crush on Sanji.
** And he had the drag queens on Okama Island hitting on him and dressing him up for two years. Poor guy.
** Also the [[IncrediblyConspicuousDrag two]] [[CampGay men]] on Fishman Island who gave him blood transfusions.
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: His attack names.
** ARMEE DE L'AIR ROBO SHOT!!! sounds better than "Air Force Robot Shoot".
* ExtremityExtremist: His legs, of course. The explanation is that he needs his hands for cooking (which, coincidentally, is similar to a principle of Capoeira - "hands are a tool of creation, feet are a tool of destruction" - and he also has some Capoeira-esque attacks).
* FakeoutMakeout: [[spoiler:With a woman named Violet.]] Its vague enough that it could be just a hug though.
* FastballSpecial: His ''Armée de L'air'' combo moves, in which he uses his powerful legs to launch his friends in the direction of the enemy.
* {{Flanderization}}: In Sanji's very first appearance, he was able to have actual ''conversations'' with women he was attracted to and attempted to woo. Now? [[LovableSexManiac Not]] [[CasanovaWannabe so much.]]
* FlashStep: One of the skills he obtained during his stay on [[spoiler:Momoiro Island]].
* FoodPorn: Any scene where he's cooking/ serving food inevitably turns into this, as demonstrated during the filler G8 Arc.
* FoolForLove: Fool? He's a self-confessed ''slave'' to love.
* GeniusBruiser: Is very smart as well as strong and extremely fast.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Possibly. In one SBS Question Corner, the crew is asked what kind of season on what kind of island they like best. Sanji's reply is "I like Robin on a Nami island!"
* GoingNative: On the island of [[spoiler:drag queens]]...
* GratuitousFrench: Most of his attacks are cooking terms in French.
** Which wasn't kept in the 4Kids dub, instead giving every attack a corny food pun.
*** The French attack names were reinstated for the Funimation dub.
* GreenEyedMonster: [[DownplayedTrope played]] for laughs when he learns about [[LadyLand exactly where]] Luffy got sent by Kuma.
* GuileHero: Pretty good at making strategies, this trait was notably seen in the Alabasta as "Mr. Prince". [[IShallTauntYou With the amount of taunting]] and misdirection that went [[MagnificentBastard Crocodile's]] way, I think it's pretty safe to say he was the closest thing to a rival {{Chessmaster}} (after [[ReverseMole Nico Robin]]) in that arc.
* HandsomeLech: At first, his perverted tendencies were accompanied by women actually finding him charming, but later on, [[CasanovaWannabe his advances are always met with rejection and/or physical abuse]].
** Seems to be going back the other way. Both the [[CreepyCrossdresser New Kamas]] and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.
*** ...Aaaaannnnd now of course, Sanji has met the beautiful dancer Violet on Dressrosa who, shockingly, actually seems to ''like'' him. As in ''she'' was the one to start flirting with ''him''. [[ThrowTheDogABone It seems his luck has finally turned for the better]].
* HeroicRROD: Relatively minor example, but there have been a few instances in which the force behind his kicks has been detrimental to himself, mainly after already taking a beating.
* HopelessSuitor: He seemed like this back when Nami was the only girl around he could try to woo most of the time. This changed once other ladies joined the crew and it became more and more apparent he'd hit on anything with shapely hips and a nice rack (though given ''this'' series, those two criteria apply to about 95% of the post-pubescent girls the Straw Hats encounter).
* HotBlooded: Usually when the ladies are in danger, he gets so HotBlooded that he actually [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PGMyg5hY04 bursts into flames]] for comedic effect. It's also the author's explanation for him being able to pull off Diable Jambe, breaking the laws of physics in the process. ItRunsOnNonsensoleum indeed.
* HumiliationConga: To sum up, [[spoiler:he was defeated by Kuma, sent on a island full of Drag Queens, is accidentally mistaken for a crossdresser by the inhabitants, chased along the whole island, forced to fight the "Queen" in dress and make up, humiliated and tricked into becoming a crossdresser himself. Thankfully, he got better.]]
** [[spoiler:Let's not forget how he was forced to admit that his poorly drawn Wanted Poster is actually him in order to get Ivankov to tell him about what happened to Luffy. This is such a monumental strain for him it actually results in ''BloodFromTheMouth''.]]
* IncendiaryExponent: Weaponized, via his ''Diable Jambe'' technique.
** [[spoiler:A Post-TimeSkip cover seems to imply that he went to PlayingWithFire as well.]]
* InLoveWithLove: Practically oozes this trope as part of his ChivalrousPervert personality.
* IronicHell: Blasted to an island of [[spoiler: drag queens]] at the end of Sabaody and forced to join in. [[spoiler:Kuma]] must have a twisted sense of humor... Also see TrainingFromHell below.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's often a {{Jerkass}} to the male members of the crew ([[DoggedNiceGuy The females]], however...), but he still loves and respects them as friends.
* JizzedInMyPants: Though with massive nosebleeds instead. After spending 2 years on an island full of Transvestites, it's become rather easy to set him off.
* [[spoiler:KiAttacks]]: [[spoiler:Post time-skip, he has awakened Haki. He seems to specialize in the Color of Observation - his BigDamnHeroes moments have become more frequent since the interim. A good example was him rushing off to save Tashigi from Vergo. He also has gotten extremely good at knowing whether to trust someone at first glance (an often-overlooked application of Kenbunshoku). He decided to put Kinemon back together when they first met, gaining a powerful ally just when they needed one. Almost subverted with Violet/Viola when she was sent to exploit his weakness for women, [[GoodAllAlong but then played straight when it was revealed that she was actually telling the truth when she said she needed him to kill a man for her]]. His own sincere intentions trigger her HeelFaceTurn - [[DidntSeeThatComing and her subsequent betrayal completely backfires on the Doflamingo Family]]. He ''then'' gets an impressive BigDamnHeroes moment by saving half his crew from Doflamingo ([[FridgeLogic the man Viola wanted revenge on]]) not long after that. His new specialty looks like the perfect pairing to his TheChessmaster/ TheSocialExpert tendencies - elevating him almost to MagnificentBastard territory. ]].
** [[spoiler:He can use [[SpiderSense Kenbunshoku Haki]] which he used in ''Nami's body''. Also according to Luffy, he can use Busoshoku Haki.]]
* KnifeNut: Sanji firmly believes that kitchen knives should not be bloodied in battle, as they are sacred instruments meant solely for the preparation of food. When fighting an opponent whose armor and weapons were made of food, though, Sanji decided that using knives to get rid of the armor would be no different from using knives to prepare a meal and displayed an incredible knife-fighting style.
* LightningBruiser: Of the Hard-Hitting-Speedster variation, as he's the second fastest member of the Straw Hats while his physical power is roughly the same as that of Zoro and Luffy.
* LovableSexManiac: Emphasize on ''Sex Maniac''.
* LoveCanMakeYouGonk: He can make some pretty strange facial expressions when he's gushing over pretty women.
* MadeOfIron: One of his latest stunts was to [[spoiler:fight a Kraken 5000ft underwater. It was so fast that he didn't even suffer from the pressure.]]
* [[spoiler:ManIFeelLikeAWoman]]: [[spoiler:When Law puts his heart in Nami's body, Sanji can't resist the urge to peep at or feel him/herself up.]]
* [[MarshmallowHell Marshmallow Heaven]]: Has received this twice, both times from [[spoiler:beautiful mermaids]], much to his delight.
* {{Megane}}: Sometimes wears glasses. Much to the fangirls' joy!
* [[spoiler:[[MistakenForGay Mistaken For]] [[WholesomeCrossdresser Crossdresser]]: By a whole flock of crossdressers]].
* MrFanservice: Unfortunately for straight male ''One Piece'' fans, looking for art of him on the internets will cause pages and pages of HoYay and Bishonen pictures with Zoro. And unfortunately for him, none of his fan girls in real life can reach him through the computer screen.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: His torso became fairly well built after the time-skip, developing more defined abs than he previously had; but his overall physique remains very slim, with his limbs actually being just about as skinny as Nami's limbs. But, regardless, he can still send men twice his size and muscular-build flying with a single kick and launch giant monsters into the air like nothing. Interestingly, while other characters frequently [[LampshadeHanging notice Luffy's oddly powerful muscles]], nobody seems to call Sanji out on this one.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: In an SBS in vol. 68, Oda [[WordOfGod confirmed]] that Sanji was modeled after Creator/SteveBuscemi as Mr. Pink from the movie ReservoirDogs.
* {{Nosebleed}}: It happens so much during a period of shock after being separated from women he actually needs a blood transfusion.
* OffScreenMomentOfAwesome: Sanji gets a lot of these. Whenever one of his friends is wondering out-loud where he is exactly, it's usually because he's saving the day somewhere else.
* OhCrap: Usually calm and composed, he had an epic one [[spoiler:when he realize who exactly are the inhabitants of Momoiro.]]
* PeekABangs: His left eye has always been covered by his hair, though WordOfGod said that it was perfectly functional under there. He's even held a pair of binoculars up to it before. Later on, [[spoiler:he switched the bangs to the other side, revealing that both his eyebrows swirl in the same direction]].
* PlayingWithFire: His "Diable Jambe" technique involves lighting his effing leg on FIRE, [[FrictionBurn via friction]], and attacking with it. Interestingly, while Oda joked that his Hot Blood is what allows him to do it, it seems to be turning into a true ability, with him bursting into flames during his anger and characters commenting on it on enough occasions to make one wonder if it was just a joke or not.
** [[spoiler:Confirmed to be canon in chapter 646. Sanji, [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum in some kind of way]], can actually ignite his entire body on fire by "thinking of those 2 years in hell" and then transfer that fire onto his opponent with a kick. It's pretty epic.]]
** This actually makes sense (or at least as much sense as you would expect in the world of One Piece). After all, Zoro's Asura technique is made possible through the use of his fighting spirit. Who's to say Sanji can't make flames via the same principle? This power of fighting spirit is very similar to the already established power of Haki, aka Willpower.
* PrincelyYoungMan: You could sort of consider him one, not to much by virtue of him thinking he's a prince, but the fact that he treats Nami and Robin like princesses and sort of thinks of himself as their knight.
* PunnyName: His name is a pun on the way the Japanese say "3 o'clock". However, the word Sanji can also refer to something that is a terrible, horrible accident that makes one want to avert their eyes and break out the BrainBleach. Veeeerry appropriate.
* RaisedByDudes: He was raised primarily by men who taught him to cook and fight. Which makes his obsession with women a bit more...understandable.
* RealMenWearPink: He cooks with a pink panda decorated apron.
** It's funny you... *cough* *cough* [[WholesomeCrossdresser mentioned pink]]...
* SharpDressedMan: A suit is his standard form of attire, usually only wearing more casual clothes during transitions between arcs.
* SmokingIsCool: Due to FCC regulations strictly banning smoking in shows intended for children, both English dubs had to cover this up when they aired on TV. They did it by either editing his cigarette out altogether (Creator/{{Funimation}}), or by turning it into a lollipop ([[Creator/FourKidsEntertainment 4Kids]]).
* TheStrategist: Proven to be one of his defining characteristics at least twice in every arc from Alabasta on.
* StupidGood: A variation (not quite stupid), but thanks to nearly starving to death as a kid, Sanji has no problem feeding a starving man. Even if that starving man and his crew of equally-starving pirates are obviously planning to attack him afterwards.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Notable considering half the Straw Hat crew have Devil Fruit powers and can't swim at all. Way back in the Arlong Arc, he held his own against a fishman ''underwater'', and he was down there for several minutes.
** [[spoiler:He has an underwater version of [[DoubleJump Sky Walk]] called "Blue Walk" and is said to be as fast as a fishman, which is pretty fast considering they're the ''third fastest swimmers in the sea'']].
** When diving for Kinemon's torso, Sanji straight up mentions that he is the fastest swimmer in the crew by a lot, even without Blue Walk. Considering that Zoro remained silent when he normally calls bullshit on anything Sanji does that isn't remotely true, one can take that small piece of information as true fact.
* SupremeChef: Makes some of the best damn food you'll find on the Grand Line. And he joined the crew to fulfill his dream of finding some mysterious and awesome ingredients that can only be found in the All Blue, so he can cook even ''better''.
* [[spoiler:TakeMeInstead: During the Thriller Bark arc, to save Luffy from Kuma, and prevent Zoro from sacrificing his life. It doesn't work, as the latter knocked him out for the exact same reason.]]
* TakenForGranite: PlayedForLaughs. After his two years in "Hell", he is so susceptible to women's looks that just LOOKING at Hancock does this to him. [[spoiler:Shirahoshi as well.]]
* TeamChef: It's a good idea to not insult his cooking skills. He'll beat you up for it. And probably suspend your eating privileges.
* ThrowTheDogABone: After two painful years on an island of transvestites, Sanji finally meets mermaids, and they ''like'' him. He's even able to resist nosebleeds for a while to play with them.
** Similarly, Oda ocassionally decides to spare him and let him at least touch a woman, and on two separate occasions he has had his face stuffed in into a girl's breasts. Nosebleeds ensue.
* [[TrainingFromHell Training From]] IronicHell: Sanji has become so fast that he can now [[LightningBruiser move at an absurdly fast speed UNDERWATER while maintaining his superior kicking power]]. He got the skill from running away from transvestites on that scary island for two full years.
** He also gained the skill to run on air. So, yeah, he can fly.
* UnusualEyebrows: His eyebrows twirl into two big ol' spirals on the ends; and, predictably, they are often the source of ridicule. Oddly enough though, both of his eyebrow spirals curl ''to the right'', meaning his eyebrows are asymmetrical on his face. Which may explain why he chooses to hide one of eyes at all times [[PeekABangs with his hair]]. (pre-TimeSkip he covered his left eye, post-Time-skip it's his right)
* VitriolicBestBuds: He's not shy about insulting or arguing with the male Straw Hats, especially Zoro, but he's also willing to go quite far in defending them despite claiming to only care for the women.
** And before he even joined, there was his relationship with Zeff. The two slung so many insults at each other and got in so many fights that the other cooks at Baratie were surprised to find out how much the they actually cared about each other.
* VolleyingInsults: Quite often with Zoro, as well as his surrogate father Zeff.
* WeaksauceWeakness: [[WouldntHitAGirl He refuses to harm women in any way]], though he is capable of blocking their attacks. This causes near-fatal problems during the fights with Bon Clay and Kalifa. Nami even criticizes him on this trait.
** Made 100 times worse as a side effect from the TrainingFromHell. For a time, even looking at a woman would cause him to faint.
*** [[spoiler:After seeing Shirahoshi, he made a full recovery.]]
* WifeBasherBasher: Repeat: [[BerserkButton Abusing women (even evil ones) in front of Sanji]] is a BAD idea; as in an [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown "ending up on the WRONG-side of a one-sided ass beating"]] bad-idea.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Really the only reason he and Vergo fought was to build up the latter's threat level]].
** Before the timeskip, Sanji is easily defeated by Ivankov to put his power in perspective.
** Let's not kid ourselves. The only worse offender of this than Zoro is Sanji. It happens to him once an arc, including freaking FILLER arcs. Notable examples include Eneru (couldn't even hit him once despite wearing shoes with rubber soles), Smoker (in the manga), Arlong, Blueno (after revealing Robin's intentions, Sanji had no use for holding back and still got beat), and Absalom (possibly a deconstruction, since it was really just a penguin fighting as Sanji, though the other zombies note he's quite powerful).
* WorfHadTheFlu: He might have won against Gin, but the wounds he sustained while Pearl beat him up while he was unable to retaliate due to Zeff being held hostage immobilized him at a crucial moment.
* WouldntHitAGirl: No matter how badly she'll beat him as a result of a "strict upbringing". See also WeaksauceWeakness above.
** According to an [[WordOfGod SBS]], it's not that Sanji won't hit a girl, it's that he can't hit a girl for some reason.
*** Also deconstructed once, when a GenreSavvy female enemy used it against him so he wouldn't be able to help [[spoiler:Robin.]]
** {{Averted}} ''one time'', when the crew first met Robin as a member of Baroque Works after Whiskey Peak. When they all drew weapons on her, he held a pistol to her head. Usopp even [[LampshadeHanging hung a lampshade]] on how out-of-character the act was. Sanji reasoned she was a threat to Vivi... ''then'' he noticed what Robin actually looked like. [[DoubleSubversion Cue hearts in the eyes.]]
** In video game adaptations, he can be forced to fight against female enemies, and in some cases, he will [[ApologeticAttacker apologize with each attack]].

[[folder:The ''Going Merry'']]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/going_merry_7836.png

->[[spoiler:Voiced by: Creator/HoukoKuwashima (JP), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (EN)]]

The Straw Hat Crew's first ship, a caravel-class ship designed by Merry in East Blue for Kaya to give to the Straw Hats (then comprising Luffy, Zoro, and Nami; Usopp comes with the ''Merry'') to reward them for taking out Captain Kuro and his Black Cat Pirates. Over time, the ship came to be loved by the crew as a home and as a friend, so much so that it literally took on a life of its own and became just as much a part of the crew as any of them.

----
* ADayInTheLimeLight: Merry gets her own TV Special, the ''Episode of Merry: The Tale of One More Friend''.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Merry's [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Klabautermann Klabautermann]], a ghostly manifestation of a ship's spirit that is born out of its crew's love for it. Unfortunately, a Klabautermann being seen by its crew is a sign that [[spoiler:their ship will soon meet its doom]]; Merry's gets seen in the midde of the Skypeia Arc, and true to form, [[spoiler:she is immobilized due to accumulated, ''terminal'' damage to her keel]] once the Straw Hats reached Water 7 at the beginning of the Enies Lobby Arc, and by the end of the arc [[spoiler:she is finally laid to rest]].
* BigDamnHeroes: She comes all the way from Water 7 to aid the Straw Hats and co. in Enies Lobby, her timely surprise appearance allowing them to escape certain doom at the hands of the Buster Call fleet that had finally cornered them.
* CoolBoat: Merry is the Straw Hats' main form of transportation from Syrup Island until Water 7.
* {{Determinator}}: Water 7's dreaded Aqua Laguna and a violent rainstorm didn't stop her from coming to her crew's rescue in Enies Lobby [[spoiler:despite her physical form being barely held together by Iceburg's temporary fixes]]. The Buster Call fleet comprised of the Marines' most immense and armed-to-the-teeth battleships didn't even make her flinch (not that they managed to hit her in the first place). The only thing that did stop her was [[spoiler:her keel (the ship equivalent of the human body's spine) finally giving in to all the damage it sustained over the past several arcs, causing the ship to essentially break ''in half'']].
* [[spoiler:FinalSpeech]]: She delivers one to the Straw Hats in order to assure them that [[spoiler:she neither blames them for her death nor has any regrets, as she had been truly happy throughout the time she was with them]].
* [[spoiler:GoOutWithASmile]]: If she had a face, it would have been smiling during her [[spoiler:VikingFuneral]]. As it is, we have to settle for her figurehead's drawn smile and the implication of her happy tone during her [[spoiler:FinalSpeech]].
* MadeOfGood: Franky explains that a ship's Klabautermann is born out of a crew's love for their ship, [[spoiler:though it only truly manifests when it's soon to be doomed.]]
* OhCrap: Not even she was immune to this during the end of the Skypeia arc, when the Straw Hats returned to the Blue Sea.... by being dropped 30,000 feet from the White Sea. Everyone's eyeballs popped out, including hers!
* RuleOfSymbolism: The damage done to her keel is drawn and shaded much like wounds would be on a person.
* SapientShip: Implied at first, but then shown explicitly when she sails to Enies Lobby without a crew.
* TearsFromAStone: Technically, it was a splash from a wave, but it happened during the climax of the fight between [[spoiler:Luffy and Usopp,]] as a way to underline the tragedy the crew was facing.
* UndyingLoyalty: The motivation for the feats described in her BigDamnHeroes and {{Determinator}} entries.
* [[spoiler:VikingFuneral]]: She is given this after she is finally [[spoiler:broken irreparably following her BigDamnHeroes feat]].
* [[spoiler:WoundThatWillNotHeal]]: [[spoiler:Her cracked keel. The Galley-la shipwrights, the best in the One Piece world, tell the Straw Hats that it would be better to get a new ship.
