-->''"I am going to be the world's greatest swordsman! (...) Whether a hero or a villain, everyone's going to know my name!"''

->Child Voice: Megumi Urawa (JP); Creator/BrinaPalencia (EN, Funi), Andrew Rannells (EN, 4Kids)

Roronoa Zoro is the nineteen/[[TimeSkip twenty-one]]-year-old swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates; he utilizes ''Santoryu'' (literally "Three Sword Style") in battle, wielding one in each hand along with one in the mouth. Mostly drinks and sleeps in his spare time (when he's not training his ass off), but becomes a real demon in battle that can defeat five hundred {{Mooks}} in two seconds. Often wears a green bandanna on his forearm that he ties around his head when he [[LetsGetDangerous gets dangerous]].

Similar to Luffy's goal, Zoro wishes to [[ToBeAMaster become the greatest swordsman in the world]]. Unlike Luffy, however, he needs only to defeat Dracule "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk, the current greatest swordsman in the world, to do so. He actually meets up with Mihawk fairly early in the story, but [[CurbstompBattle failed to land a single hit]] and was sliced by Mihawk's {{BFS}} for his trouble. Mihawk, however, held back just enough to leave Zoro alive, and told him to challenge him again when he was ready. In a strange twist of events, he is ''trained'' by Mihawk to be a stronger swordsman to protect his crew. For giving up his pride for the sake of others impresses Mihawk enough to agree.

His first bounty was 60,000,000 berries, his second bounty was 120,000,000 berries, and his third and current bounty is 320,000,000 berries.
-----
* [[OneHundredAndEight 108]]: His Pound Hou techniques have this motif. It starts with him doing 36 Pound Hou with one sword in Skypiea Arc, then later uses 108 Pound Hou with 3 swords to defeat Ohm in the same arc. After the TimeSkip, he upgraded his moves into 360 Pound Hou with one sword, and predictably, 1080 Pound Hou with three.
* AintTooProudToBeg: After defeating the Humandrills, he has to beg Mihawk to teach him to get stronger for the Straw Hats' sake. Also before this, he [[spoiler:begged Kuma to take his head instead of Luffy's when he defeated the Straw Hat Crew in Thriller Bark]].
* TheAlcoholic: If he's not fighting, he's either training, sleeping, or drinking. When training under [[spoiler:Mihawk]], he was horrified when his teacher told him he couldn't have a drop of alcohol to drink [[spoiler:until he managed to infuse his sword with so much Armament Haki it turned the blade completely black]].
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Zoro has had a rich brown skin tone his entire life, so unlike Robin, who was just tan, his actual pigmentation is a little less than the lily-white Nami/Sanji have. Though considering he also has green hair and WordOfGod states his real life nationality would be Japan, who knows what he's supposed to be?
** Of course, there are some naturally tan Japanese, especially in the more Southern islands.
* AntiHero: Zoro can be particularly murderous, as he's a BloodKnight. He was even described by other pirates as being capable of exuding a massive killing intent. Zoro has also stated several times of his willingness to kill, and even said he's not a friend to pirates or marines.
* TheAntiNihilist: While Zoro would be the last person to talk about the inherent beauty of the world, he's still deeply invested in protecting his crew and honoring the memory of his friend, he's just as much a Romantic as the rest of his crew, he just doesn't happen to go on about as much. This also overlaps with some Buddhist ideology. He also started as a guy who didn't care about anything but his own strength.
* ArtifactTitle: The epithet "Pirate Hunter" came from [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin hunting pirates]] for a living before the start of the series. Now that he's a pirate himself, this would be quite difficult to do without getting arrested himself.
* {{Asexual}}: The only male member of the crew not to peek in the girls' bathroom during the Alabasta arc, and shows a general lack of interest in the opposite sex. He's even proven immune to Nami and Robin's feminine wiles. This is probably a case of "[[CelibateHero thinks love is a distraction]]", since he seems to focus almost completely on his fighting ability. May also have something to do with his first female friend, Kuina, dying on him when they were children.
* AxCrazy: The gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Detective Loomes" depicted him as a bloodthirsty samurai who likes slicing pedestrians with his swords, basically cranking his BloodKnight tendencies UpToEleven.
* BadassArmFold: [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zoroblood.jpg In this pic,]] which completely cements his {{Made Of Iron}} credentials.
* BadassBaritone: He has the deepest voice in the crew, and is undeniably badass.
* BadassBoast:
** From chapter 642:
--> '''Zoro:''' You want to kill me?! You couldn't even kill my '''boredom'''!
** He also made a spectacularly badass one as a ''child'' which doubles as ThePromise when reacting to Kuina's death:
-->'''Zoro:''' I'll become the world's greatest swordsman, I'll become so famous, my name will heard out even in Heaven!"
** Makes another one in Chapter 754:
--> '''Zoro:''' I'm the man who will one day be this world's greatest swordsman! You were never in my league to begin with!
** He has one against Pica, which doubles as a PreMortemOneLiner.
-->'''Zoro:''' Over the 9 mountains and across the 8 seas...there is nothing I cannot cut!
* BadassLongcoat: After the two-year timeskip.
* BadassNormal: He's the second-strongest member of the crew, pretty much on par with Luffy, and yet he doesn't have any Devil Fruit powers; his power comes from sheer skill and training. In fact, he can take on and defeat Devil Fruit users.
* BadassesWearBandanas: He gets especially badass whenever he dons his black bandana.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Out of all the crew, it's ''Chopper'' he seems to have a huge soft spot for. So, don't try to hurt Chopper. It'll make the big guy decide to go back on his policy not to fight for revenge.
* BigBrotherMentor: To a degree, towards Luffy.
* BigDamnHeroes: He often jumps out of nowhere to save someone at unexpected moments. He saved Vivi from being blown up by Mr.5, shielded Nami from Mr.1's attack, stopped Kuma from taking Luffy, and [[spoiler:post TimeSkip, stopped King Neptune's Trident.]]
** He stopped Hyouzou from attacking Robin. However, considering Robin's lack of concern prior to his intervention and Zoro's offhanded apology over it, the two probably see this particular example more as Zoro [[KillSteal stealing Robin's kill]] than this trope.
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: When he makes his swords black with the strength of his Haki, they become harder, more durable, and sharper; they're able to slice a massive skyscraper-sized stone statue in half effortlessly and with not a chip on their blades afterward.
** Additionally, Zoro's strongest sword Shusui has a black blade naturally.
* BloodierAndGorier: His fights compared to the others ''as well as his own''.
** LighterAndSofter: [[spoiler:His fights post-timeskip. Thus far he's barely been ''touched,'' much less injured.]]
* BloodKnight: Mostly apathetic to everything around him, but once you say you want to fight, voila! You got his interest!
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: In episode 223 of the anime.
* BrutalHonesty: Don't expect Zoro to be anything other than blunt in anything he says. Notably his commentary on [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji's]] attempts to woo attractive women, his opinion on Tashigi's fighting ability (in comparison to his), or the situation with Usopp with his initial departure of the crew.
* CharacterTics: When Zoro has the intention to fight seriously, he ties his bandana (normally kept tied around his left arm) around his head.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]]; Zoro used to smile, laugh, and play along with the crew a lot more before the Baratie Arc. After being defeated so easily by Mihawk, he became much more serious, sullen, and hotheaded in the following arcs; over time, the "sullen" part declined but his predominant personality remains stern. He still has his CloudCuckooLander tendencies though, see below.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He is extremely strong, owing to rigorous training. He can actually ''lift a house above his head and throw it'', for starters.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: You wouldn't guess it from his [[TheStoic usual demeanor]], but Zoro just has some moments of total daffiness, and is completely serious during all of them. He yells like Tarzan while swinging on a vine. When Nami has trouble swinging, [[GenreSavvy he claims it's because she "didn't do the call"]]. When he's being turned into a wax statue, [[StabTheSky he raises his sword into the air]] and advises everyone to [[DyingMomentOfAwesome strike a pose]].
* TheCoatsAreOff: Zoro removed the top part of his coat when he got serious in the battle on Fishman Island.
* TheComicallySerious: He's very serious and doesn't have much of a sense of humor, but he can be hilarious nonetheless, partially thanks to his crew.
* TheConsigliere: Occasionally. Though he respects Luffy's decisions most of the time, he has an innate sense of the burdens of captainship and he ''will'' step in and give some harsh, albeit necessary wisdom whenever he feels Luffy is making a mistake.
* CreepyGood: Zoro is one of only two members of the Straw Hats known to have killed in the past. Zoro is willing to chop his own feet off to join a fight and creeps the others out with his sheer determination and willpower, not to mention his monstrous strength. Usopp, Nami, and Chopper frequently find him "creepy" or "nuts" depending on the situation.
* CutenessProximity: Adequately explains his huge soft spot for Chopper.
* CutlassBetweenTheTeeth: His fighting style relies on it.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: While his childhood is mostly unknown, Zoro did lose a good friend and rival, Kuina.
* DeadpanSnarker: Zoro has a really dry wit, and has thrown out some pretty badass {{Pre Asskicking One Liner}}s.
* DeathGlare: Not as prominent as Luffy's but he can pull it off. In fact he managed to [[spoiler:beat Monet, a ''logia'' user, by this alone to the point she was frozen in fear and couldn't reassemble herself after he cut her.]]
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Zoro's ultimate goal.
* {{Determinator}}: His fight against Mr. 1 comes to mind. You must see the amount of punishment Zoro endured during that fight to believe it.
* DiagonalCut: Most notably, how he finished off Mr. 1.
* DumbMuscle: Downplayed, as Zoro has shown decent judgement and wisdom. However, aside from Luffy, he's the only crew member to not have an additional skill outside of combat, NoSenseOfDirection, drifts towards being CloudCuckoolander, and was the last person to get Luffy's [=3D2Y=] message.
* EmbarrassingRescue: Tashigi finds his help ''really'' embarrassing.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: He tapped into his potential for Haki during the timeskip.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Zoro is pretty merciless, and not above killing or injuring the {{Mook}}s he encounters. However, even he is visibly disgusted by Crocodile's willingness to murder an entire country of innocents for personal gain, angrily snarling ''The term "not-human" was created to describe scum such as you.''
* EvilWeapon: Kitetsu III's curse has lead all its previous owners to violent deaths. Zoro sees it as a problem child, but he is too sword-crazy to back away from the challenge - and his mojo proves stronger than its curse as shown as he tested it on himself.
* EyepatchAfterTimeskip: Subverted. He hasn't been shown to use an eyepatch (so far), but he did come out of the time-skip missing an eye. This has yet to be explained.
* FanDisservice: Zoro with his shirt all torn up is pure FanService. But Zoro with his shirt torn while ''soaked'' in his own blood and so hurt he could barely stand after his confrontation with Kuma wasn't so much.
* FantasticFightingStyle: His Three-Sword Style, which involves a sword in each and and one sword in his ''mouth''. By [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum One Piece standards]], this is one of the more realistic fighting styles.
* FightingSpirit: This is basically how his ''Asura'' technique works.
* FlamingSword: Yaki Oni Giri (Flaming Demon Slash). Used once with actual fire, and in one of the [[TheMovie movies]] with magic fire. He also stated that he would love a flaming sword as a weapon.
* {{Flanderization}}: Relatively minor case. What started out as having a bad sense of direction eventually becomes being so directionally incompetent that in the G8 arc he even manages to bend time and space through the power of getting lost.
* {{Foil}}: As TheLancer, he's a neat contrast to Luffy in many ways; a former bounty hunter with an outwardly stern and menacing disposition, who in most instances should be an enemy to Luffy.
* FriendToAllChildren: He has a soft spot for kids; this is actually the first indication that he's not the bloodthirsty monster people think he is.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Sort of. An octopus was seen stuck on him when he came back up from inspecting a shipwreck. Later, a South Bird was staying near him (though it was to get his food). Chopper, a half-reindeer, usually clamps on his head when he's scared.
* FullNameBasis: Villains only ever call him by his full name, and some add in his epithet "Pirate Hunter" as a prefix for good measure. He shares this distinction with Robin. Interestingly, Mihawk and Tashigi seem to be the only people in the world on LastNameBasis with him, frequently calling him just "Roronoa".
* FullPotentialUpgrade: Yubashiri and Kitetsu III were this, as a filler episode's flashback showed Zoro having a tendency to break his second and third swords until he got them.
* FunWithHomophones: All of his attack names ''read'' menacingly... but ''[[IncrediblyLamePun sound]]'' [[IncrediblyLamePun like the names of food]]. For example, his basic attack "[[{{Youkai}} oni]] [[DiagonalCut giri]]" means "demon slash"... but sounds like onigiri ("rice-ball").
* GogglesDoNothing: He did attempt to use them once, in order to shield his eyes from an enemy's flash attacks. This did little good, given that the goggles aren't tinted.
* GrumpyOldMan: The gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Family Time" turned him into one of these, with his sternness and dedication to swordsmanship cranked UpToEleven, and a balding head. HilarityEnsues.
* HeavySleeper: This guy can sleep ''anywhere'' at ''any time'', even sleeping through a storm like it was smooth sailing.
** Or during a snow storm, he doesn't even wake up after being thoroughly COVERED in SNOW; he's even wearing short sleeves.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Although, Zoro is the most anti-heroic of the crew. Zoro is an extremely powerful master swordsman, being able to use one, two, and three swords in varying attack styles, going from melee-type all the way to artillery. He is even able to use some sword techniques that utilize the very air itself to strike the enemy from a distance. Brook classifies Zoro as a user of the "Power of Destruction" (破壊力 Hakairyoku?).
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Offers his life in exchange for Luffy's before a [[TooPowerfulToLive nigh unbeatable foe]]. Instead, said foe allows him to take in all of Luffy's pain and exhaustion, which was supposed to be a traumatic enough experience to kill him. [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat Naturally, it doesn't]]. Keep in mind, this was all the pain and exhaustion from someone ''made of rubber''. Everything that he was able to endure thanks to his Devil Fruit powers, forced into a (technically) normal human body.]]
** AND, all this was forced into him ON TOP of his own, already superhuman, damage.
* HighPressureBlood: Has an infinite supply of it.
* HollywoodHealing: [[http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=226 "Band-aids heal everything."]]
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: Implied to be a source of angst involving the best friend he never got over. It's especially heart-wrenching when you consider that the other Straw Hats were at least assured they were unconditionally cared about by their own loved ones, no matter how tragic the circumstances.
* IconicOutfit: His original white T and black pants pre-timeskip, as well as his first TimeSkip outfit which is the green robe. Also, he's never seen without his green "belly warmer" and 3 earrings.
* IfIWantedYouDead: A rare non-villain example. [[spoiler:When he fights Monet, she knows he can use Haki and in one attack vertically cuts her in half but holds back on the Haki to not kill her. She knows she should be dead and this near-death experience brought on a fear that is enough to keep her from properly reforming.]]
* IGaveMyWord: Takes his promises to others seriously, and is determined to keep them, to the point that he seems to really dislike being accused of not being able to fulfill a promise.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Who else can sword-swing with their mouth? Or wield three swords at the same time?
* ImprobableAge: One of the biggest badasses in the series is 21?
* InstantArmor: Learned to use the Armament Haki during the timeskip, and he imbues the power in his sword like many New World swordsmen. WordOfGod is that Zoro specializes in this type of Haki, and it shows; he can launch a ''black tornado of RazorWind'' that keeps on spinning and cutting up everything in its path with it.
* JerkassHasAPoint: While not a complete Jerkass, tends to be one of the more abrasive members of the crew when giving advice. However, his advice tends to be right.
** During the Davy Back Fight, he tells Chopper to own up to his decision to join the Straw Hats and that he shouldn't be blaming others for it.
** When Usopp wanted to rejoin the crew, he tells Luffy that unless Usopp apologizes, he'd simply be allowing a crew member to disrespect him.
** He acts rather apathetic about [[spoiler:Sanji leaving the crew for his ArrangedMarriage with one of Big Mom's daughters]], pointing out that they can't be sticking their noses in one Emperor's business when they're currently focused on another.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's normally grumpy and rude, but if any of his crew get in trouble he's the first to help them, while growling about how stupid/thoughtless they were for getting into the mess in the first place.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Why do you think he carries three at a time?
* KiAttacks: As revealed by Luffy, he can now use Haki after the time-skip. WordOfGod says that he specialises in Armament Haki, which is shown when he used it to cut [[AnIcePerson Monet's]] cheek, ''[[SwordBeam at long range]]''. It's also implied he can use Observation Haki.
* TheLancer: To Luffy, again.
* LetsGetDangerous: When he puts the bandanna on, Zoro will usually use some crazy attack that destroys his opponent, and usually the environment around them. Lampshaded during Enies Lobby where Kaku asks him if the bandanna increases his power.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: An interesting case where the villains barely had to do anything to provoke Luffy into fighting Zoro at Whiskey Peak. They had all been beaten up by Zoro and Luffy was mistakenly led to believe that Zoro did this for the fun of it, when the villains were "nice" to him and the crew beforehand, giving them food and partying with them, all the while waiting for the chance to kill them all.
* LickingTheBlade: He does this a couple of times. Not surprisingly, there was much [[{{Squee}} squeeing]] from the [[FanGirl female fanbase]].
* LightningBruiser: His physical strength is equal to Luffy's, and he can react fast enough to dodge ''bullets'' fired at ''point-blank range''. [[spoiler:Post time skip: He's faster than a Fishman, ''while underwater''.]]
* MadeOfIron: To a mind-blowing extent. Zoro is the trope image for a reason. He refuses to be incapacitated even after Mr. 1 practically puts him through a meatgrinder. This is most noticeable in the anime, which often downplays how badly Luffy and others are hurt in their fights – it is kinda hard to do with Zoro, as he almost always fights swordsmen.
** In the Arlong arc, when Arlong sees the extent of Zoro's wounds prior to the battle, and how well he'd fought, he decides he ''cannot let a human like this live.''
* {{Mangst}}: He still carries [[MementoMacGuffin Wado]] [[TragicKeepsake Ichimonji]] everywhere.
* MartialPacifist: While never one to even "try" to avoid a fight, Zoro rarely, if ever, starts one, despite his rather BloodKnight like nature. After the time skip Zoro even starts to refuse to fight people he deems weaker than himself, and those he does fight he tries to make give up by destroying their weapons or intimidating the hell out of them. That said if his opponent still comes at him or the other Straw Hats and allies he will take them out.
* MasterSwordsman: Zoro's ultimate goal. [[spoiler:He was also trained by a MasterSwordsman – Dracule "Hawk Eye" Mihawk.]]
* MeaningfulName: His surname is based on that of real-life pirate [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_l%27Olonnais François l'Olonnais,]] notable among other things for ''[[AxCrazy cutting out an enemy's heart]] [[AndShowItToYou and biting into it in front of him]] [[TerrorHero mid-fight]]''.
* MrFanservice: Qualifies in most areas, most notably that he looks ''great'' with his shirt off, which happens [[ShirtlessScene more often than not]].
* MultiWielding: He often ''triple-wields'' katanas, with one in each hand and one [[CutlassBetweenTheTeeth in his]] ''[[CutlassBetweenTheTeeth mouth]]''. This being anime, of course, it's always quite effective, as absurd as it would be in real life. It goes even farther, however, with Zoro eventually learning to ''nonuple-wield'' – that is, use nine swords at once, or at least create the appearance of this. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], since Zoro's style isn't nearly as effective unless he uses three swords.
* MythologyGag: When first hearing about three-sword style, Ryuma questions if it's a circus act. In the early development, Zoro was made as a member of Buggy's CircusOfFear crew.
* NervesOfSteel: Reacts pretty calmly to situations. Justified as Zoro's belief in fate leads him to leave things to luck.
* NeverGetsDrunk: One of the greatest examples. Zoro can hold ridiculous amounts of alcohol. Even after out-drinking thirteen people, Zoro went on to fight ''one hundred trained assassins'' at Whiskey Peak with no problems whatsoever. He didn't even have a hangover next morning.
** Chapter 669: [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji]] [[FreakyFridayFlip (in Nami's body)]], and [[DemBones Brook]] all get hit by a sleeping gas that is somehow supposed to use alcohol to knock out even the heaviest of drinkers. Zoro does end up falling asleep from the fumes, but it also takes him longer than Sanji or Brook to succumb; long enough that he can slice a needle-laden mountaintop that they're headed toward in half so that they don't all die or get horribly injured.
* NeverMyFault: [[ImplausibleDeniability Damn, the others are lost again...]]
* NoBadassToHisValet: To the world, Zoro is a monstrously powerful swordsman with an intense amount of bloodlust and potential, and second to one of the most dangerous pirates on the Grand Line. To the rest of the crew, he's their meathead of a swordsman who's capable of getting lost in a ''straight hallway'' and is only marginally smarter than their reckless idiot of a captain.
* NoSenseOfDirection: This man is capable of getting lost in a ''[[RunningGag straight hallway]]''.
** This man is capable of getting lost when a door ''[[UpToEleven was in front of him]]''.
** This man is capable of getting lost when it shouldn't be ''[[UpToEleven physically]] [[RuleOfThree possible]]''.
** And when he wants to get away from someone, he'll end up running into them anyway.
** Even the zombie that had his shadow got lost when following a large group of zombies.
** When he's told to go south, he goes the opposite direction. [[BeyondTheImpossible While in the company of a bird whose head will only ever point south.]] And when he's told to go north, he immediately starts ''climbing a building'', thinking "north" means "up".
* NoSocialSkills: A more minor example than most, but if Zoro isn't issuing badass threats he's actually fairly awkward in social scenarios, usually getting rather frustrated if things get out of his comfort zone. His relationship with Tashigi and Sanji reek of this.
* NormalFishInATinyPond: At the beginning of the series, Zoro already had a reputation as a top tier swordsman. Most of his battles ended in [[SingleStrokeBattle single stroke]] and was more feared then Luffy, who was seen as a nobody at the time. When faced with Mihawk, the greatest swordsman in the world, everyone expected an epic battle. It was a complete and utter curb stomp with Mihawk deflecting all of Zoro's strikes with a tiny knife.
-->'''Mihawk''': You may have a reputation, but you're still just a bunny. [...] You're a little frog, croaking in your puddle. Time you learned how big the world is.
* NotSoStoic: He's usually TheStoic, but he does have his moments, such as when seeing Kaku's Devil Fruit powers for the first time.
** His reaction to Luffy laughing at [[TheDragon Pica's]] ridiculous laugh (paraphrased):
-->'''Zoro''': Luffy! Now is not the time to laugh at the enemy's—pfffhahahahaha!
* NotWorthKilling: [[spoiler:He could've easily killed Monet if he used Haki, but he didn't, deciding that leaving her with her resolve just as broken as her body was enough. However, he did say to Tashigi after she cut her down, that he'd have finished her off himself]].
* NumberTwo: In times of emotional crisis for the crew, he's taken responsibility of the crew and reminds Luffy of his duties as a captain, solidifying his position as this. This is most obvious in regards to Luffy's duel with Usopp. Later, he and Nami tend to share this role depending on the situation.
* OneManArmy: Post TimeSkip, he managed to defeat most of the Neptune Army soldiers by himself, and after his capture, he plans to do the same with Hordy's men now. Even Usopp [[LampshadeHanging calls him one.]]
** Much earlier, in one of the more awesome moments of the series, he single-handedly defeated 100 expert bounty hunters in Whiskey Peak. And this was after out-drinking ''thirteen'' other people
* OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank: To [[SerialEscalation an increasingly ridiculous degree]].
** In the 5th movie, the villain says his Cursed Sword will drink all of Zoro's blood. Poor thing probably would have exploded from overfill.
** They made fun of this in Episode 523. They showed Zoro looking at ''nine pint bags of blood'' that were being transfused into Sanji, angling as if ''he had given it all''.
* PapaWolf: Zoro just seems to care for the crew as much as anybody else. Messing with any of them is a pretty good way to easily anger him.
* ParentalAbandonment: There has been no mention of his parents at all. All we know is that he trained at the dojo at a young age.
* PerpetualFrowner: Zoro used to smile and laugh quite frequently in early arcs. This changed after his defeat at the hands of Mihawk. Since then, he kind of developed a bad temper as pointed out by Sanji in the Arlong arc.
** Debatable, but it seems he got better post-Time Skip.
** He's also prone to smiling and laughing during the parties the Straw Hats and friends have at the end of most arcs.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: [[spoiler:'''''Sliced a mountain-sized stone Pica to bits''''']].
* PetTheDog: He has his moments with kids. He's not usually ''trying'', but they're there.
* PowerGlows: Occasionally, he will glow when he performs any of his more potent attacks as well as creating illusions, thought of by Kaku as being the power of his spirit.
* PreMortemOneLiner:
** To Kaku:
--->'''Zoro (''to Kaku''):''' Bring on the hardship. It's preferred on the path to carnage!
** To Monet:
--->[[spoiler:'''Zoro:''' (''to Monet'') Have you ever seen a wild beast, that is never guaranteed to bite a person? I haven't.]]
** [[spoiler: Subverted, because he actually didn't intend to kill her, just leave her broken so she won't be able to endanger his crew-mates. She might as well have been dead though]].
* QuitYourWhining: Says this to Chopper after he gets forcibly taken into Foxy's crew as a result of the Straw Hats losing the first round of the Davy Back Fight.
%%* RatedMForManly
* RazorWind: His Tatsumaki and Pound Hou techniques.
** :After the TimeSkip, his Tatsumaki gets mixed with TornadoMove as well.
* RealMenDontCry: It should be noted that Zoro has only been seen crying twice over the course of the entire series. The first time was when he was still quite young and Kuina had just died, and he asked her father for Wado. Quite understandable, especially at that age. The second time, was while he swore to Luffy that he would never lose again (this, after [[CurbStompBattle losing to Mihawk]]).
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Luffy's red. And a much bigger Blue to Sanji's Red, Zoro is grumpy, stoic and hides his affection towards his crewmates with actions as opposed to words. His most powerful techniques are reliant on a cool head and cold, steely focus.
** Post-TimeSkip: In an extended scene in episode 519 of the anime, when [[VitriolicBestBuds he and Sanji]] [[VolleyingInsults start fighting]], Zoro has a blue aura and Sanji has a red one. The [[PlayedForLaughs battle fury is so intense]] that all that is seen are the two {{Battle Aura}}s colliding with each other. [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome A shame we don't see the actual fight]], since it would've spoiled the {{Canon}} reveals of their new post-TimeSkip [[TookALevelInBadass abilities]].
* TheReliableOne: An unusual example, given his abrasive nature, but Zoro is actually a pretty stable rock for the Straw Hats. He can almost always be counted on to be the one who:
** Shows up in time to save one of the other Straw Hats.
** Gives sensible advice.
** Steps up when Luffy isn't being a proper captain.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: He has no skills beyond fighting (and drinking). While all of the other Straw Hats have responsibilities like medicine, navigation or sharpshooting with the cannons, the only thing he does is guard the ship and try not to get lost.
* ScarsAreForever:
** An enormous one spanning his chest, courtesy of Mihawk.
** He has a scar on each of his legs from trying to cut his feet off to get out of Mr. 3's candle wax.
** During the timeskip, he acquired one over his eye, which he seems to have lost.
* ShipTease: Zoro has protected the two [[http://www.manga-access.com/manga/O/One_Piece/chapter/190/4 female]] [[http://www.manga-access.com/manga/O/One_Piece/chapter/275/3 members]] in a BigDamnHeroes / BerserkButton manner.
** His interactions with Tashigi, especially during Punk Hazard arc. The fact that she resembles his childhood friend also helps.
** Can't forget the two [[AlmostKiss Almost Kisses]] that he and Sanji had, though both were in filler.
* ShowyInvincibleHero: In [[JustForPun sharp]] contrast to all of his fights before the time skip, post-timeskip Zoro has breezed through all of his opponents, cockily dishing out {{Badass Boast}}s to let them know how beneath him they are. It isn't until he encounters [[PersonOfMassDestruction Admiral Fujitora]] that he even sustains an injury, and that's only a brief stumble in his stride. Zoro's mastery of Armament Haki has taken his MadeOfIron credentials to a whole new level, shown by the fact that, so far, neither him nor his swords have even taken a scratch in the New World - [[spoiler:Not even after he cuts a walking mountain into castle-sized pieces!]]
* SitcomArchNemesis: This is largely what Sanji is to him despite being in the same crew (similar to Shanks and Buggy's relationship when they were on Roger's ship). These two never miss an opportunity to belittle, one-up, or humiliate the other.
* SlasherSmile: He shows a great deal of enthusiasm when it comes to getting into fights.
** Case in point: '''''[[http://i.ytimg.com/vi/goMp6QlpmeU/hqdefault.jpg this.]]'''''
* TheSouthpaw: While it is clear that Zoro is ambidextrous, he seems to be predominantly left-handed. He keeps all of his swords sheathed next to his right hip, meaning it would be easier to pull a sword with his left hand. When wielding a single sword, Zoro usually uses his left hand. His single sword techniques have nearly always been executed with his left hand.
** Also, in Movie 5, in his fight against Saga, Saga stabbed Zoro's left hand after telling him that he had "lost his dominant sword hand in battle."
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Officially, it is "Zoro". All Japanese material and the Funimation dub/subs confirm this. However, the 4Kids dub and Viz's manga spell it "Zolo". It was heavily implied the change was made because someone on the production team worried about being sued by the "owners" of ''Franchise/{{Zorro}}''[[labelnote:†]] (sarcasm quotes because a judge declared Zorro to be a PublicDomainCharacter back in the 90's, but no one is willing to admit it)[[/labelnote]], who is moss-head's namesake. Still, the FanWank over this grew to a ridiculous extreme; it's one of the biggest backlashes in the history of Western anime fandom.
* TheStoic: He's a lot more reserved than most of the crew, often taking negative events without losing his composure. He's often the crew's voice of reason.
* SpiderSense: Obtained the Observation Haki during the Timeskip, which functions similarly to spider sense.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: After Luffy's explanation on the difference between pirates and heroes – heroes share meat, pirates don't – which Zoro was not there to hear, Zoro gives an incredibly similar analogy, except he substitutes booze for meat.
* SwordSparks: Tends to pop up in all of his fights, since he usually fights other swordsmen.
* TerrorHero: Zoro paralyzes Monet by a display of strength and pure killing intent in the Punk Hazard arc.
* ToBeAMaster: His goal is to become [[MasterSwordsman "the greatest swordsman in the world"]].
* ToughLove: Toward Chopper, when lecturing him on the consequences of being a pirate during the Davy Back Fight, and to Usopp, forcing the sniper to swallow his pride, apologize for his selfishness, and beg before being allowed back on the crew at the end of the Enies Lobby arc.
* TragicKeepsake: Wado Ichimonji, his only consistent sword, used to belong to his childhood friend/rival Kuina, and after her death he uses it to remind himself of their promise to become great swordsmen.
* TrashTalk: Zoro is the Straw Hat Pirates' resident trash talker in a fight. He enjoys telling his opponents things like "The reason you've never lost is because you've never met me", and of course, he always gives out a "Post Asskicking One-Liner", in which he usually comments on how his opponents were a mere stepping stone for him.
* UndyingLoyalty: It took some doing at first, but of all the Straw Hats, Zoro's the first one who took his position ''very'' seriously. So long as Luffy continues to meet his expectations where it counts, Zoro will always be the first to have his back and be the last to fail him -- and when Luffy makes a decision as Captain of their crew, he'll damn well see that the rest of them follow it, and will absolutely not forgive any mutinous attitudes towards his Captain.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Sanji. The two make quite an impressive team... when they're not fighting, arguing, or hurling insults at each other (which is to say, most of the time).
** More a case of WithFriendsLikeThese. Sanji and Zoro don't just argue a lot; they seem to ''truly'' dislike each other, never once voluntarily hanging out or having any friendly conversations for the better part of ''18 years'' since Sanji's introduction. The best they've mustered is being more or less indifferent to each other. Still, deep down, they respect each other as fighters and would go to any length to protect the other from harm.
* VolleyingInsults: Gets into this quite frequently with Sanji.
* WeaponOfChoice: His three [[KatanasAreJustBetter katanas]]: Wado Ichimonji, Kitetsu III, and Shuusui. He's consistently had Wado Ichimonji, but had gone through several other swords before getting his current remaining pair.
* WhatExactlyIsHisJob: {{Fanon}} typically pegs him as the First Mate, but this has not been explicitly confirmed in-story (yet). Luffy took him on board because he wanted a 'champion' in his crew, especially if he's the future "World's Greatest Swordsman" to balance out the future Pirate King. But then it loops back around because apparently being crew champion entails fighting slightly less than the captain and more than the cook.
** He was the first to join Luffy, and he certainly ''acts'' like a NumberTwo sometimes, though he's just as likely to be bossed around by Nami as vice-versa. The World Government seems to consider him such, even if the Straw Hats don't.
** Bartolomeo, the Straw Hats' fanboy, also [[http://media.tumblr.com/24c48437c234835197c5d918b704b88c/tumblr_inline_mu1vemI5131r14ami.jpg gushes over Zoro labeling him as second-in-command in Dressrosa]], so it would seem marines aren't the only ones with the impression vice-captain is his role.
** Before they met Nami, he was basically Luffy's navigator after they parted ways with Coby ([[NoSenseOfDirection You can imagine how well]] ''that'' went).
** In the sense of power, which seems to be a valid claim in this world considering the position of Fleet Admiral of the Marines was decided in a duel, he would easily be 2nd in Command. During the Fishman island's final battle, after Luffy used his Conqueror's Haki to defeat a massive group of Fishman, Zoro commented "If he wasn't at least this strong, I'd be captain."
** He has shown an understanding of military tactics and crew discipline which he shows in the Water Seven arc when [[spoiler: Usopp left the crew. He was the only one to disagree on letting Usopp back into the crew as if nothing had happened, going so far as to quit himself if that happens.]] He sees Luffy as captain and will follow him to the ends of hell, but understands where lines need to be drawn and is willing to challenge Luffy himself if need be. Nami may boss him around, but she bosses ''everyone'' around. In short, yeah, he's pretty much NumberTwo.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: [[spoiler:Zoro fully intended to sacrifice himself as part of a deal with Kuma to spare the rest of the Straw Hats. When he made this deal, he was under the assumption that everyone else was unconscious]].
* WhenHeSmiles: He can be a very handsome man. [[SlasherSmile Or a very scary man.]] Usually the latter.
* WisdomFromTheGutter: Zoro is ''the one'' to impart knowledge about how a pirate should behave within their group; aspects such as respect, roles and trust are brought up by him when the Straw Hats are in the middle of some inner conflict as seen during the Davy Back Fight and Water 7. Interesting to note is that Zoro only does this when Luffy, the Captain, isn’t the one voicing this out or he is also participating in the turmoil; the exact course of action a First Mate would take, if they ever had one.
* TheWorfEffect: Often loses to a character, such as Buggy, Mihawk, Arlong, Eneru, Rob Lucci, Oars & Moria, Kuma, and Isshou in order to show how powerful they are.
* WorfHadTheFlu: On the other hand, a good chunk of those opponents were immune to swords, to varying degrees. Buggy can't be cut at all because swords only disconnect his floating body parts, and he stabbed Zoro after his back was turned. In Arlong's case, Zoro was recently really run through the gauntlet, had already been in a fight, and was using a type of sword he wasn't used to, so it was hardly surprising there. Eneru is made out of [[ShockAndAwe pure electricity]], so he couldn't be touched by anyone except Luffy.
* WouldHitAGirl: He will cut a girl if he has to.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Somewhat {{zig zagged}} with. His childhood friend Kuina may have been the only girl that he was willing to fight seriously. In his fight with Monet at Punk Hazard, Tashigi claims that Zoro is holding back due to a [[PoliticallyIncorrectHero dismissive attitude towards women]]. Subverted, after proving to Monet that he will cut a girl if necessary.
** An assassin dressed as a nun attacked him at Whiskey Peak after attempting a WoundedGazelleGambit . Zoro quickly brought her down, but used the back of his blades to not kill her.
* YouCanBarelyStand: Happens to him ALL the time, with his [[OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank fight with Mr. 1]] being a defining example.
** Also the Kuma incident at Thriller Bark. Zoro took in ''all the pain Luffy had accumulated during his fights with Oars and Moria''. The entire area around him was covered in blood afterwards, and Zoro, though still standing and unflinching, looked like he was ready to die on the spot.
** Subverted completely post TimeSkip.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: His hair is green. Sanji likes to make fun of him this way, calling him "Marimo" ([[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marimo after a rare form of spherical algal bloom]]).
* YoungerThanHeLooks: Can you believe that somebody who [[MrFanservice looks]] [[ShirtlessScene like]] [[RuleOfSexy that]] is 19 ([[TimeSkip later 21]])? Of course, he drinks like a fish, and has been [[TrainingFromHell training]] himself for about half his life to kick ass.

-->''"What good is treasure if I'm all alone? I'd rather have nothing at all!"''

->Voiced by: Creator/AkemiOkamura (JP)[[note]] (briefly replaced by Creator/WakanaYamazaki when Okamura went on maternity leave)[[/note]], Creator/MegumiToyoguchi (JP, OVA); Creator/LuciChristian (EN, Funi), Creator/KerryWilliams (EN, 4Kids); Georgina "Gina" Sánchez (Latin American Spanish)

The eighteen/[[TimeSkip twenty]]-year-old navigator of the Straw Hats, Nami was initially introduced as a thief who detested pirates and stole from them. Her years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. Despite these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, [[OnlySaneWoman though they do get on her nerves from time to time]], and their journey would have been nigh impossible without her near-supernatural abilities to read the ocean currents and predict weather phenomena, leading some to wonder if she's actually a witch. She uses a weapon called the Clima-Tact, later upgraded to the Perfect Clima-Tact and currently the Sorcery Clima-Tact.

Her dream is to draw a map of the world, which she was unable to realize until Luffy managed to free her and her island from the tyrannical rule of the [[FishPeople Fishman]] pirate Arlong. She owes a great deal to the others and especially Luffy for this, and is often the only member of the crew other than Zoro to personally confront or remind him of the deep, gut-wrenching choices that he must face.

Her first bounty was 16,000,000 Berries. Her current bounty is 66,000,000 berries.
-----
* ActionGirl: Not at first, but starts growing into the role after being given her Clima Tact. After the TimeSkip, she's finally a [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]] like the rest of the crew.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair is straight-up orange in the manga, but veers toward reddish-orange in the anime. The Oda-directed ''Strong World'' and ''Film Z'' notably make it purely orange, similar to the way the former lightened Robin's skin before she became permanently light-skinned post-TimeSkip.
* AlmightyJanitor: While technically her position is only the navigator, her word is basically law on all matters related to sailing, finance and the day-to-day management of resources, thus making her the unofficial quartermaster. At this point, even ''she's'' quite a bit stronger than her mere (now rightfully updated) 16,000,000 bounty would imply thanks to the massive and dangerous upgrades she made to her Clima Tact.
* {{Antihero}}: Starts off as not willing to kill, but fine with putting pirates in situations where they are certain to die due to her past.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: She's one of the few characters able to render Luffy a bruised and bloody mess. WordOfGod says that it's because her blows are "emotionally and spiritually charged".
* ArtEvolution: Her eyes. As mentioned below in BrownEyes, they've been drawn lighter since the TimeSkip. Furthermore, her eyes were originally drawn uniformly brown, with the irises only visible when she was showing strong emotion. Now, the irises are visible at all times (though the manga still generally follows the pre-TimeSkip design of "uniform brown unless emotional").
* AuthorAppeal: Oda is HappilyMarried to Chiaki Inaba, the actress who played her in the ''Jump Festa'' stage performances. Oda thinks his wife is incredibly sexy (and let's be fair, she ''is'' very pretty), and as a kind of tribute to her, altered Nami's design to show it off.
* BadassAdorable: She's a very cute young lady, and she knows it, but she's also far from helpless. She even sometimes lampshades it.
* BadassBookworm: Nami is a highly skilled navigator as well as a talented cartographer, to the point where Arlong considered her skills on par with the fishmen "superiority" since they were superior to any fishman's. When Luffy destroys her room at Arlong Park, maps of both bathymetric and geographic nature were seen, indicating Nami has a wide variety of cartographic skills. She is capable of formulating advanced equations in mere minutes to predict a precise course of action, although she usually needs to write the equations down on a physical medium when formulating them. She has the innate ability to sense changes in the weather, and can even predict the appearance of supposedly unpredictable cyclones in the Grand Line, even when running a high fever. The movie Strong World also shows that she performs better than a crew of scientists with some advanced equipment in predicting the weather.
* BadassNormal: No Devil Fruit powers, but the Clima-Tact more than makes up for it.
* BareYourMidriff: A few of her outfits sport this, but [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/4/48/2yearNami.jpg her first timeskip design is the most evident case of this.]] Zou is actually the first post-TimeSkip arc in which she's not baring it, and even then, she started the arc with a midriff-baring outfit before exchanging clothes with Wanda.
* BathingBeauty: Gets a few of these scenes occasionally.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Double-subverted. The serious damage she receives during her more intense fights does show, but as soon as the fights are over, in any of the more minor battles, and in the long run overall, her skin is absolutely flawless.
** The most ridiculous is probably the case of her shoulder; she ''stabbed'' it repeatedly during her epic FreakOut at Arlong Park, and it left a very large and visible scar (which you can see [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/File:Nami_Scar.png here]], above the [[FanService fan service]]) for the remainder of the arc. As soon as the arc was over? She got a new tattoo and her scar was nowhere to be seen. But deep stab-wound scars like that, in real life, are particularly nasty and never quite heal so completely.
*** In the manga, for some time the scar was still visible a bit under her new tatto the times she wore sleeveless shirts, but by the Whisky Peak arc it completely disappeared. Maybe Oda thought it was too much of a hassle to draw.
** Averted as far as [[WildTake Wild Takes]] go: she has the most out of anyone, ''and'' the goofiest. Being the OnlySaneMan will do that to you.
* BerserkButton: Simply put, ''[[FieryRedhead don't try to piss Nami off]]''.
** Do not spend money without consulting her first.
** Do not steal anything from her, especially if she stole it first.
** Don't call her a witch.
** Don't insult her good looks.
** Never hurt her tangerine trees.
** Don't argue with her.
** Hurting kids is a quick way to get on Nami's permanent shit list.
* BlowYouAway: Since she can control the weather with her Clima-Tact, she can use this to attack. It's how she defeated Miss Doublefinger.
* BrownEyes: Dark brown before the Timeskip. Since the Timeskip, they've been drawn much lighter, almost to the point of being orange. They're a sign that her apparently greedy personality belies a more noble person, and that she's a valuable ally to Luffy.
* ButtMonkey: One of the rare female versions, not to mention one of the biggest '''''[[UpToEleven ever.]]''''' She's more so known as [[FieryRedhead that one chick who blows up at her crew mates idiocy]], and [[{{Greed}} a greedy pirate girl]], but whenever something goes wrong, ([[PlayedForLaughs which is all the damn time,]]) she'd be no better than ''[[CowardlyLion Usopp]]''. Best exemplified in the [[HalloweenEpisode Thriller Bark Arc]], where after Enies Lobby is all said and done, you would think that nothing could faze her. [[{{Bathos}} Cue the ghosts and zombies.]]
** As of the TimeSkip, this seems to be [[InvertedTrope flipped:]] When her doppelgänger pointed a gun at her ''head,'' she didn't even flinch. Yes, Nami the [[{{Greed}} greedy]] [[FieryRedHead red head]], pulled a [[TheStoic Stoic.]] That goes thrown right out the window as soon as Luffy starts doing his usual antics.
* CantCatchUp: Usopp somewhat fixes this problem for her. She's not quite as strong as her crewmates, but she's got a respectable record, taking out Miss Doublefinger from Baroque Works and Kalifa from [=CP9=].
* CatFight: Gets into these all the time, but her fight with Kalifa in which Nami herself is scantily clad and getting rubbed all over [[FanService by the just-as-buxom, fishnet-fond Kalifa using her]] [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum "Slippery wet soap powers"]] takes the cake.
* CelibateHero: Her reason to not want to marry Absalom is (other than he's a creepy pervert) that she is way too young to get married and would rather go on adventures for the time being. Also, while she regularly flirts with others to get what she wants, she is one of the three crew members (along with Luffy and Zoro) to never show unambiguous attraction to anyone.
* CharacterDevelopment: After the two year timeskip, she does not over-react, scold, or hit the crew as often for their rash actions anymore, like when she decides to take part in activities such as [[spoiler:demanding money when the crew holds Ryugu Kingdom "hostage".]] In fact she now appears quite calm in the most daunting of situations, most notably when Fake Nami held a gun to her head, implying she has become fairly confident in her abilities.
* CharacterTics: Playfully sticking her tongue out at someone she's robbed or just somehow screwed over. It also shows up fairly often in official artwork and merchandise.
* ChildProdigy: Nami was able to draw impressive maps by the time she was only ''ten''.
* CombatStilettos: She's most often seen wearing high-heeled sandals, though she doesn't fight physically.
* ConfusionFu: One of the Clima-tact's abilities is to create several fake Nami illusions. It also makes her look like any one of them, meaning it's not a good idea to rely on the fact that they all look different from her.
* TheConsigliere: While all the Straw Hats can fill this role for the very [[IdiotHero dense]] Luffy, Nami is the one who most often directs him in the right direction with her advice and insight (especially in regards to navigation}.
* CoolSword: One of her new techniques is to create a [[spoiler:wind sword]].
* CowardlyLion: Less than Chopper and Usopp, but she does not have the fear immunity that the rest of the crew have. This is justified out of pragmatism than anything else, since she is completely untrained in physical combat. After the TimeSkip, this is now no longer the case, [[spoiler:as noted when her doppelgänger pointed a gun at her ''head'', and]] she didn't even ''flinch.'' She's been going strong ever since.
* CryCute: Despite the quite massive JerkassFacade she puts on for the first half of the Arlong arc, it's next to impossible not to gain sympathy with her when she breaks down crying due to Arlong's betrayal... She also has several moments in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc, especially regarding Usopp.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Twice in canon. The first was [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/6/6e/W7.jpg in the Water 7 arc]], when she didn't fight at all. The second was [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/a/a6/Nami_PerfectClimaTact.JPG in the Enies Lobby arc]], where she more than proved her worth as an ActionGirl. Her battle outfit in ''Film Z'' has one as well, though in that case it's partially justified: since she was turned into a kid, her outfit is child-sized, and thus looked a lot shorter when she returned to normal.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Nami had one of the worst upbringings. Her parents were killed in a war when she was a baby, and she and another girl, Nojiko, were ''de facto'' adopted by Bellemere, a wild child-turned-Marine, who brought them home. When Nami was 10, Bellemere was murdered by Arlong when she used all the money she had to pay for the lives of her children instead of herself (she didn't even have to, since they weren't registered). She was then conscripted into Arlong's pirates for her mapmaking skills, then dicked around for a 100-million-beri bounty on the town's freedom that Arlong never intended to allow her to pay.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The special "Episode of Nami" TV Special that aired between episodes 560 and 561. A retelling of the Arlong Park Arc. Actually post TimeSkip Nami reminiscing while on their way to Fishman Island.
* DeadpanSnarker: In the Funimation dub. Luci Christian clearly enjoys making Nami as wry as possible.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She beats her crewmates up very often.
** She does this significantly less as time goes on, especially after the TimeSkip.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the manga, she first appears in chapter 8. In the anime, however, she makes an appearance in the very first episode, before Luffy himself.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: She asked Nojiko to keep her efforts to buy her village back from Arlong a secret, even after Genzo had her banished from the village for joining Arlong Pirates, knowing that the villagers struggled to pay the tribute. It turns out that Genzo, unwilling to believe she'd join the pirates willingly, got Nojiko to tell him the truth, but decided to keep it a secret from Nami so she could run away if she was unable to go on.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She grows her hair out during the TimeSkip.
* FanServicePack: Over the course of a few hundred chapters/episodes, Nami's physique changed greatly. Her breasts have gradually increased in size, from modest B's to full-blown F's. It's enough to make you think that the story hasn't been in ComicBookTime, but apparently she's just prone to growth spurts. At the ages of 18 and 20. Every other week of her life. And the [[PerverseSexualLust fans]] [[RuleThirtyFour rejoiced]].
** Well, technically G-cup to I-cup to J-cup, according to WordOfGod, but the same logic applies. (note that Japanese bra cup sizes scale differently than American ones; translated, her breast size is still absurd, but not impossible)
** And keep in mind, this is the same universe where pathetic-looking runts (Coby) turn into outright [[{{Bishonen}} bishonens]] in less than a year (albeit with training), and where ordinary-sized children grow into 22-foot-tall monstrosities (Moriah). And both are human.
** There is also her upbringing to take into account. Under Bellemare, her life was PerpetualPoverty, with a constant struggle to get enough to eat, books on cartography being a ''luxury''. For the eight years in Arlong's captivity, she was not fed ''at all,'' and she had to steal food from other pirates as well as valuables, with valuables taking a higher priority. Once she became a pupil of the weather mages, her nutritional needs were much better met, allowing her to realistically grow a larger bust. In addition, while with the Straw Hats Sanji is able to feed her far better than she had been before, hence her growth in the Grand Line.
* FieryRedhead: One of the more [[{{Tsundere}} emotional]] members of the crew. "True to her looks, she's so bold!"
* FireIceLightning: The [[WeatherControlMachine Clima-Tact's]] most basic function is to create three types of air bubbles named the Heat Ball, Cool Ball, and Thunder Ball. It used to be a slight subversion in that with the first version of the Clima-Tact, the Heat and Cool Balls were useless as attacks, and tended to be used for weather manipulation only. Once it got upgraded, the Heat and Cool Balls became strong enough to inflict damage to enemies (albeit relatively minor damage) in their base form.
* {{Gainaxing}}: In the 7th movie, sometimes they bounce wildly when she moves very little.
** It's also the case in the 12th movie. Though you could argue this is compensating for the fact that she spends most of the movie as a kid.
* {{Greed}}: One of her main traits.
* GuileHeroine: Her usual approach; when she first meets Luffy, she calls him [[HilariousInHindsight "Boss"]] to [[LetsYouAndHimFight get the guys chasing her off her tail]].
* HotWitch: Often called a witch, with her weather control capabilities and seductive nature.
* HowDoIShotWeb: When she first got her Clima-tact, she had no idea what it would do, and spend some time doing party tricks built into it by Ussopp.
* HypocriticalHumor:
** Nami doesn't trust Robin when she first joins, and calls Luffy, Chopper, and Sanji idiots for being easily swayed by Robin to allow her to join up despite her history with Crocodile. She then goes to tell Robin that she herself won't be as easily swayed as she doesn't trust her. However, as soon as Robin casually offers up a bag of gems, Nami does a complete 180 and gets easily swayed. She even called her [[CoolBigSis "Sis"]].
** Nami likes to charge her crewmates for ridiculous reasons, but when one of them tries to do the same to her, she runs off.
* IconicOutfit: 3 of them; Her very first (the white shirt and orange skirt), her Enies Lobby outfit (the [[FanService infamous]] cuttoff brown blouse and blue skirt) and her first TimeSkip outfit, the bikini top and jeans. She's also always seen wearing a Log Pose on her wrist like a watch.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Minor example with Chopper. Perhaps a combination of his young age and not being human, she doesn't seem to have any qualms with him being around while she's bathing. During her shower after the crew leave Fishman Island, she happily invites Choper to join her before zapping Sanji and Brook for peeking. In the 17th opening, Luffy, Usopp and Chopper chase a golden beetle into the bathroom where Nami is showering. The former two get beaten up and yelled at while Chopper leaves unscathed.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: While WordOfGod did state there will not be any romance in the series, it's worth noting that the baby that Luffy is holding (in a, granted non-canon, page) that represent's Oda's daughter looks like Nami.
* ImpossibleHourglassFigure: Had one as early as the Alabasta arc, but it's much more defined after the TimeSkip.
* JerkassFacade: Acted like this during the Arlong arc to try to prevent the Straw Hats from interfering in her business with Arlong, but it came [[TearJerker crumbling down]] along with her attempts to resolve the situation herself.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Emphasizing the jerk, at first. She can be selfish, manipulating [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and rude]], but there's no doubt she cares about her friends. She gradually [[TookALevelInKindness outgrows this behaviour]] [[CharacterDevelopment over the course]] of the series. By the time the TimeSkip rolls around, she rarely acts this way anymore (towards her friends, at least) unless they're asking for it.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Usually the light to Robin's dark. Can be zigzagged though, as while Nami is more bubbly and girly than Robin, she is much less [[ProperLady ladylike]], and she even has her moments where she is cold and aloof while Robin shows curiosity and childish imagination.
* LittleMissBadass: In the twelfth movie, after [[FountainOfYouth she was temporarily turned into a kid]] by Ain.
* LittleMissConArtist: She takes advantage of that to trick some Marine soldiers into giving her info about Z.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Post-TimeSkip.
* LovableRogue: While not a villain, Nami is known for being a thief, but she's still a lovable person.
* MagicStaff: It even creates small-scale weather effects.
* MamaBear: When faced with the imprisoned children of Punk Hazard begging to be taken back to their families, the rest of the crew (Sanji in particular) remain indifferent to their plight (though Chopper and Franky did want to go back too, they considered it too reckless). Nami however, is the ''first'' to take a stand for them, and her fervor in protecting Caesar Clown's young victims eventually inspires and awakens the dormant conscience of her friends. She's also this to her friends. Considering her backstory, very understandable.
--> '''Sanji:''' Hey, what the hell do you mean Nami? They're not our problem! We're not Samaritans who go around saving people!\\
'''Nami:''' I know we're not! But when little kids are begging and crying for you to help them, you CAN'T just leave them and do nothing!
* MeaningfulName: Her name means "wave", and she is, after all, a navigator on a ship...
* {{Meganekko}}: Sometimes when she's at work.
* MetaGal: Spends a lot of her early appearances reacting to Luffy and Zoro's inhuman abilities. Actually, almost everyone falls into this role when introduced to the wackiness of the Straw Hat Crew, but the more human members (like Nami) keep it up longer. Like most of the other characters, she now reacts to how strange the people that the Straw Hats meet are instead.
* MoneyFetish: She's such a classic case that she's the current image for that page. See [[MrViceGuy Ms. Vice Girl]] below.
* MsFanservice: Most conventional in the world, as she's… stacked, [[{{Gainaxing}} bouncy]], [[TheTease flirtatious]], and [[BareYourMidriff rarely covers her stomach]].
** Now after the time skip we have… [[WalkingSwimsuitScene bikini top]], low-riding pants that expose her hips and upper crotch-lines, high heels, and [[LongHairIsFeminine much longer and free-flowing hair]].
** Taken up to eleven in the "Glorious Island" movie tie-in; most of the focus is on Nami bouncing around in a tiny bikini, with her breasts larger than ever before.
** Her wardrobe seems to shrink for each story arc as she's down to the bikini top and [[WhoWearsShortShorts short shorts]] in the Dressrosa storyline.
* MsViceGirl: She is obsessed with money and often cons other characters (including her own crewmates) out of their hard-earned cash. Despite this, her good qualities still outweigh her greed. In the Arlong Park arc, it's shown exactly why she's so fixated on getting rich. The habit doesn't exactly die after the fact, but she slowly gets better about it, at least.
* MundaneUtility: Weather control makes a great weapon. It also makes showering anywhere a lot easier.
* TheNavigator: Also good at drawing maps.
* NeverGetsDrunk: Nami can hold her liquor just fine. She out-drinks fifteen people and goes on like it was nothing. She may even be better than Zoro, as she actually outdrank more than him.
** Slightly subverted by the fact that while she did indeed drink more than Zoro when they were greeted at Whiskey Peak, beating him by two, she drank herself into a complete drunken pass-out. Zoro stopped because he never drinks himself out of his senses, but its implied that if he kept going, Nami would passout before him.
** She actually does get a little tipsy in the Fishman Island arc, but not outright drunk.
* NiceGirl: Post-timeskip; See TookALevelInKindness below.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Gets her fair share of this. She can be just as goofy as the rest of the crew.
** She sometimes uses Luffy's off-the-wall nicknames for people, i.e. "Weird Knight" for Gan Fall and "Tra-guy" for Trafalgar Law.
** Not to mention her ButtMonkey status. [[Creator/EiichiroOda Oda]] had a field day with Thriller Bark.
* NumberTwo: Post TimeSkip, she begins sharing the role with Zoro, as the crew tends to defer to her leadership whenever Luffy and Zoro are unavailable (one such example being when she's given authority over the Sunny while the rest of the crew goes into Dressrosa).
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:Her running into Luffy's arms and crying over Sanji's fate in Zou proves that the situation is serious.]]
* OnlyOneName: Although several other characters, including some of the Straw Hats, also count, she's especially notable in that she ''literally'' has only one name. Being orphaned when she was a baby, it was her adoptive mom Bellemere who named her Nami, and her surname has been lost to history, as has her birth-given name.
* OnlySaneWoman: Has bemoaned how their crew always seems to attract the weird ones. She actually ''cries tears of joy'' when Robin joins.
* OutOfFocus: Her dream as a child was to draw maps of all places she visited, and eventually a World Map itself; Arlong made her dream a nightmare, but when Nami parted ways with her village to join Luffy's crew, she expressed again her dream to draw maps; since then however, Nami isn't seen drawing maps of any kind – though one may assume that she's doing so ''off-screen'', because the map-making in itself (as opposed to achieving the goal of a ''complete'' World Map) is not necessary to move the plot forward. That said, she can be seen drawing maps in anime filler multiple times, as well as some of the openings and endings.
** She, Chopper, Sanji, and Brook during the second half of the Dressrosa Arc. They were absent from the story for more than a year and a half in the real world before reappearing (from December 2013 to July 2015).
* ParentalAbandonment: Nami's parents most likely were killed, since she (along with Nojiko) was on a battleground.
* PirateGirl: She wasn't ''at all'' proud to work with Luffy at the start of the series due to watching a pirate kill her mother and being basically enslaved by that same pirate at the start of the series. Thanks to Luffy intervening, however, she now embraces her role as a pirate, as it has brought her many great friends and ''lots'' of [[MoneyFetish money]].
* ProtectiveCharm: The Vivre Card that Lola gave Nami in Thriller Bark arc [[ChekhovsGun turns out to be this]] in Totland arc. [[spoiler:Lola says that it's actually her mother's card - that is, Big Mom's, who ate the Soul-Soul Fruit; as Vivre Cards are representations of someone's soul, Big Mom's naturally have a profound effect when it comes to the "[[AnimateInanimateObject Homies]]" animated by Big Mom putting people's souls into them. Namely, they don't want to attack Nami because they feel Big Mom's aura around her.]]
* ProudBeauty: She's attractive, she knows it, and knows how to use it to her advantage.
* [[RedOniBlueOni Red Oni]]: When compared to Robin, she's far more likely to raise her voice and express emotions (anger and frustration, but occasionally sorrow) or otherwise breakdown. Also, compare the visual aesthetic of the FieryRedhead Nami to the TallDarkAndBishoujo Robin.
* SandInMyEyes: When she's captured at Weatheria and put in jail for trying to steal meteorological equipment, she reads about [[spoiler: Ace's death]] in the newspaper and breaks down crying, causing her captors to freak out and release her. She quickly reveals that it was just an act, and she makes off with the equipment she stole, along with one of the meteorologists, who notes that she still hasn't stopped crying.
* ScienceHero: Meteorological science, to be exact.
* ScreamingWoman: Though it's more so because she's only one other than Usopp perceptive enough to realize just how bad things are, Nami's shrieks of terror are a regular occurrence.
* SelfHarm: During the Arlong arc, after a [[DirtyCop corrupt Marine]] in league with Arlong "confiscates" the ransom money Nami had spent eight years collecting on his orders, Nami freaks out and starts repeatedly stabbing the Arlong tattoo on her arm with a knife, not stopping until Luffy makes her do so.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She isn't ashamed to show her body to others as long as they pay her afterwards.
%%* ShesGotLegs
* ShockAndAwe: Her Perfect Clima Tact, essentially a super-taser on a stick, can create lightning strikes and other electrical discharges under the right conditions. It has other weather related functions, as well.
** After the TimeSkip, she gets a substantial upgrade in the form of the Sorcery Clima Tact. She can now produce electricity that visually looks about as powerful as [[PsychoElectro Enel's]] 30,000,000 volt vari, which is a huge upgrade.
* ShouldntYouStopStealing: For some time after her reason for stealing (i.e freeing her village) ceases, she still keeps her stealing habit.
* ShowSomeLeg: Nami tends to use her charm to her advantage.
* SoleSurvivor: Along with Nojiko, who was a baby at the time, they're the only survivors from their initial hometown after a pirate attack.
* SquishyWizard: While she is not gifted with superhuman speed, strength or toughness, in fact, she's probably the weakest (physically) character in the crew, she's still manages to keep up in fights because her Climatact and all it's variations allow her a wide-variety of extremely versatile and powerful effects. She can emulate the powers of multiple Devil Fruits, and she can usually avoid getting hit by crafting illusions or just making herself invisible.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Just before the crew entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked who had the highest and lowest IQ of all the characters introduced so far; he replied that Shanks's first mate, Benn Beckman, and Nami were the smartest (in that order), but he couldn't decide which characters were the dumbest because almost every other character is an idiot or a [[CloudCuckooLander space case]].
* TattooedCrook: Very important to her backstory, and how. She has a black tattoo (blue in the anime) on her left shoulder, which represents tangerines and pinwheels (a homage to [[GoodParents Bell-mère]] & [[CoolBigSis Nojiko,]] and [[ParentalSubstitute Genzo,]] respectively), where she used to have a tattoo for being a member of Arlong's crew.
* TheTease: She flirts with random villains to get information or to provide a distraction. Though as the show is NoHuggingNoKissing, her flirtations are rarely more than a wink and some tame compliments of the mark.
* TeenGenius: When we are first introduced to her, she is eighteen and knows the ins-and-outs of sailing various kinds of ships, an almost entirely instinctive knowledge of climatology and meteorology, and an incredible knack at cartography that she had been refining since she was only ten years old. [[WordOfGod Word of God]] states she was the third smartest character introduced in the East Blue Saga. The other two were pirates with years of experience, one being the first-mate of one of the most powerful men in the world. So yeah, she's smart.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Vivi's Girly Girl, though it's all relative as neither is very tomboyish or girly (Vivi's girliness came out once she returned to Alabasta).
** Also the more [[HotBlooded passionate]] and [[{{Tomboy}} headstrong]] of the two ladies aboard the Thousand Sunny, although her hobbies are much more girly than Robin's, which are just... [[NightmareFetishist ''weird'']].
* TookALevelInBadass: Every time she gets a new Clima Tact (i.e. in Alabasta, Enies Lobby, and after the timeskip), but special mention needs to go to her after the timeskip, where she electrocutes ''a whole bar'', takes down Fishman soldiers (who are 10 times stronger than normal humans, mind you) like they were nothing, and even displays the ability to make herself invisible with mirages to steal a very important document from Fishmen on power-increasing steroids. Also, she is far less of a coward than before: for example, she doesn't even flinch when having a gun pointed against her temple.
* TookALevelInIdealism: She used to be a shameless ClassyCatBurglar with a visceral hatred for all pirates as a result of a [[spoiler:very traumatic childhood where she was exploited by the pirate who killed her mother.]] After seeing the lengths to which Luffy goes to protect and avenge her, she learns to trust the world again.
* TookALevelInKindness: Slowly as the series has gone on, but particularly after the timeskip. [[spoiler:From forgiving Hatchi, to hugging Usopp and Chopper when they reunite, to even immediately forgiving Jimbei for letting Arlong loose on East Blue,]] she's come a pretty long way from the JerkassFacade she started out with.
** Not to mention, she hits her crewmates far less often after the timeskip.
** Even before the timeskip she showed signs of this. When Robin was rescued and returned to the crew during Enies Lobby, Nami's immediate reaction was to {{glomp}} her.
* TragicBigot: Downplayed. Her experience with the Arlong Pirates left her not outright racist, but with the impression that all Fishmen are violent and oppressive toward humans, which made her initially reluctant to go to Fishman Island. Then the Saboady Archipelago arc shows her that Fishmen actually suffer far more prejudice from humans than vice versa, and one of the less malevolent members of the Arlong Pirates pulls a HeelFaceTurn.
* {{Tsundere}}: Gets pissed at the idiotic nature of her crew despite being very close to them; [[OnlySaneWoman completely]] [[SurroundedByIdiots understandable]], of course.
* {{Underboobs}}: Episode 560 conspicuously shrinks her bikini top to show them off.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Where she can keep several things, depending on the situation. Oda even jokingly calls it "the hidden Nami valley"!
* WalkingSwimsuitScene: Post TimeSkip, until the Zou arc, her outfits almost always included a bikini top. Kin'emon initially believes that she's been stripped (not that he's really complaining).
* WeakButSkilled: Her knowledge of the weather and her tools have gotten her out of tight spots more than once. Note the "weak" here is only in correlation to her crew, the strongest of whom can ''punch an entire city into two''.
* WeaponOfChoice: Her [[WeatherControlMachine Clima Tact and later Perfect Clima Tact]]. Even later, the Sorcery Clima Tact. Before those she used a normal wooden quarterstaff.
* WeatherControlMachine: Her Clima Tact, to an extent.
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Quite a few of her [[TheFashionista many, many,]] ''many'' different outfits feature a pair of these.
* WingdingEyes: Whenever anything related to cash is mentioned.
* YouAreNotAlone: Upon learning Arlong backstabbed her and stole her fortune she would have used to buy her village's freedom, she starts crying and begs Luffy for help. He simply puts his hat on her head and moves Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp to attack Arlong for making her cry.

-->''"I am the Great Captain Usopp!"''

-->''"The captain is a man who can change lies into the truth!!"''

->Voiced by: Creator/KappeiYamaguchi (JP), Creator/SonnyStrait (EN, Funi), Creator/JasonGriffith (EN, 4Kids) , Aldo Lugo (Latin American Spanish)

Usopp serves as the crew's sharpshooter, and previously served as the (barely competent) repairman for the ''Going Merry''. He had a reputation on his home island of being a serial liar who claimed that pirates were attacking, which came back to haunt him when pirates ''[[CryingWolf actually attacked]]''. He's a rather boastful seventeen/[[TimeSkip nineteen]] year-old who likes to tell tall tales (several of which actually are or do come true, after a fashion), though he's more prone to hiding behind the stronger crew members like Zoro when he gets into a fight. However, when push comes to shove he is very dependable. He specializes in the use of a slingshot, called the Galaxy Slingshot (''Ginga Pachinko''), which he replaced with the Kabuto and later the Black Kabuto.

His dream is to better himself and become a brave warrior like his father Yasopp, who serves alongside Shanks, Luffy's idol. According to WordOfGod, he is the physically-weakest member of the crew, and his worries about [[CantCatchUp not being able to keep up]] with the stronger members, with the resulting inner turmoil from that, put him at odds with Luffy during one story arc, and ultimately resulted in the creation of an alter ego dubbed Sogeking (a pun on "Sogeki" (Sniping) and "King", "Sniper King" in the English versions) which he uses to draw on his inner strength and courage.

His first bounty, as "Sogeking", was 30,000,000 berries. After the events of the Dressrosa Arc, the government finally recognized Usopp himself by name and gave him his current bounty of 200,000,000 berries. In addition, he was given a new official epithet to go with his real name: "God" Usopp.
-----
* TenMinuteRetirement: In the [=CP9=] saga.
* AbnormalAmmo: It was one thing to be shooting hot sauce and gas bombs, among other things. [[spoiler:Now he's shooting seeds which instantly grow into ''man-eating plants'']].
** [[spoiler: After traumatizing her with a WildTake earlier, he defeats Sugar a second time by shooting a bizarre capsule like contraption that opens up to reveal a drawing of himself doing a recreation of the aforementioned WildTake, doing no actual damage but causing her to faint again. The capsule in question even included time deployed rocket boosters on it, somehow.]]
* AchillesInHisTent: Water 7 and Enies Lobby, as a result of Luffy changing ships and [[CantCatchUp feeling that he'll always lag behind the others]].
* AllUpToYou: During the Dressrosa arc, he's the only one left who can defeat Sugar and break the spell on all the humans-turned-toys. Unfortunately, that much pressure causes him to run away but their repeating his lies of his greatness forces him to go back, admit the truth, and then try his damnedest to win against Sugar.
* AnswersToTheNameOfGod: While on Dressrosa he gains the title of "God Usopp". Later, it becomes his real title when the marines recognize him by this name.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: One look at his nose should tell you he's a liar.
** A long nose is also evocative of the tengu, mythological creatures notorious for being boastful.
* AuraVision: His "Observation Haki" allows him to see people's auras.
* BadassBeard: He grows a goatee during the TimeSkip.
** [[http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120714113234/onepiece/images/8/88/Usopp-Film-Z.png One of his outfits]] in ''One Piece Film Z'' gives him a full beard and BadassMoustache. Both fake, of course, but still pretty funny and cool.
* BadassBoast:
** "I am the great Captain Usopp! I have destroyed entire islands with my 8000 followers!"
** Now in the manga: [[spoiler:"It's true, I've deteriorated... I used to lie a lot more... NOW I CAN ACTUALLY DO THOSE THINGS!" Hell yeah.]]
** Subverted in chapter 695: "I'll take on any enemy with their back to us."
** Right before [[spoiler: sniping from halfway across Dressrosa to save Luffy and Law]]: "I'm the sniper; support is glory! Unnoticed by others, I shoot down the enemy to protect my friends!"
* BadassBookworm: His creative engineering has resulted in the creation of both the Clima-Tact and Kabuto. He also appears to have some knowledge concerning chemistry, being solely responsible for manufacturing the highly innovative slingshot pellets, or "stars", that he uses for ammunition.
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have the superpowers of Luffy or the super strength of Zoro and Sanji, but he's still capable of challenging opponents much stronger than him... when he gathers the courage to do so, that is.
** He's also got perhaps the highest pain tolerance of the entire crew, which really says a lot. He remained conscious after his battle in Alabasta which included every single bone in his body breaking. Comes up again in Strong World where the BigBad wipes out the whole crew by crushing them in stone and leaving them all unconscious...except Ussop.
** It's implied that after the TimeSkip, confronting fearsome opponents is less of a problem for him now. You know, comparatively. It takes a much higher level of threat to scare him than it used to, even relative to the higher levels of threat the crew is actually facing now, and ''sometimes'' he's quicker to overcome his fear.
* BadLiar: Alternates between this and ConsummateLiar. Everyone knows when he's lying and their only reaction is either with a snarky remark or comical hit to Usopp's head.
* BecomingTheBoast: Post-TimeSkip. [[spoiler: In Dressrosa, Usopp takes out a key officer of the Doflamingo Family not once but twice. One so vital to their enemy's plan that she was guarded night and day by an Elite Officer. The first time he does it through luck. But the second? He snipes her from the other side of a country with a bullet designed to target ''her mental trauma''.]] "Sniper King" indeed.
** It's also a running theme for him. When he was introduced he'd frequently tell lies and stories to frighten enemies, amaze children, and entertain his friend. After going on adventures with the Straw Hats, he'd keep finding strange situations that he'd completely made up like a monstrously huge gold fish and over time each one of his stories began to be something he'd be able to retell as truth. With the above [[spoiler: The result of taking out Sugar means he'd in one fell swoop liberated Dofamingo's entire slave force, exposed the true nature of his rule over the country, and gained the devotion and admiration of every slave that benefited. In other words, he "brought a country to it's knees with his army of thousands of followers".]]
* BigDamnHeroes: [[CrowningMomentOfFunny To himself]] with his own alter ego.
** Sogeking saving Robin while she was on the brink of the Gates of Justice certainly counts.
** In Dressrosa, he saves Robin from being stripped naked by gnomes... off-screen. Yeah, that's right! When the gnomes are about to take her clothes, they immediately stop as one of gnomes tells them to stop. The reason: Usopp lied to them that he is their hero and he mentioned that Robin is his friend. Usopp himself ''doesn't even appear'' in that chapter.
* BondBreaker: The entire argument and fight between himself and Luffy over leaving or keeping a heavily-damaged Merry. Why do you count him here? [[spoiler:The entire debacle happened ''before'' we found out that Merry was sentient.]]
** [[spoiler:Sort of. Usopp ''did'' see the Klabautermann before this, though he was only vaguely aware of what it meant.]]
* BrainyBrunette: Despite being a constant liar and LovableCoward, Usopp has proven to be a brilliant inventor and adequate battle tactician.
* ButtMonkey: Every now and then. A RunningGag seems to feature him refusing to go into a dangerous place out of fear, or getting himself in the most dangerous situations either by accident or by his crewmates.
* CallingYourAttacks: While everyone in the series does this, Usopp occasionally exploits this trope by deliberately miscalling his attacks.
* CantCatchUp: Part of the reason he temporarily leaves the crew.
* TheCape: Sogeking is a parodied-yet-straight example. On one hand, his first action as Sogeking is to volunteer his services because the Straw Hat-Franky Family alliance was trying to rescue a DamselInDistress. His Sogeking persona is likewise more heroic and professional, and yes, [[SuperheroesWearCapes he wears a cape]]. On the other hand, he takes this persona on because he can't swallow his pride and help as "Usopp, former Straw Hat", his former crewmates think he's nuts (except for Luffy and Chopper who were respectively too oblivious and too childish to realize Sogeking was Usopp), and the theme song is played for cheesiness.
* CharacterDevelopment: Usopp grows in confidence and loses alot of his cowardice.
* CharlieBrownFromOuttaTown: Sogeking.
* ChivalrousPervert: While not as bad as [[LovableSexManiac Sanji]], Usopp shows a subtle perverted side. The best example of this is when he, Zoro, and Brook are trapped in a suspended cage in Ryugu Palace and Brook explains his newfound ability to extend his soul over long distances. He also explains that his soul can travel through solid objects, including walls, to which he begins to have a small nosebleed, indicating that he used this ability to peep on girls over the duration of the timeskip. Usopp begins crying to Zoro, stating that Brook was, "making him jealous." The "chivalrous" part also comes in when he sees Nami naked and politely thanks her.
* ConfusionFu: Mixes a bit of this into his fighting style, including [[CallingYourAttacks calling the wrong attack names]] and randomly attacking his opponents with a Rubber Band Of Doom. Psyching his opponent out is an important part of his fighting style, as when he beats Perona by convincing her he can lift a 10-ton hammer (an inflatable balloon which explodes on impact – by which time she has fainted) and taking out an opponent with one blow from his "5-ton hammer" before that – two frying pans and a stick wrapped in foil.
* ConsummateLiar: Alternates between this and BadLiar. Usopp never leaves a chance to tell a big lie about himself. This gets deconstructed in his character introduction when he tries to warn Kaya about Kuro. He begins to gradually stop doing this after some CharacterDevelopment.
* CowardlyLion: Once his bravado wears off and he's normal Usopp once more.
* CrazyPrepared: His fight with Luffy shows us what Usopp can really pull off with a little prep time and prior knowledge of his opponent.
** Then, he made a hundred ways to apologize to him. Spent days doing that. In the end none of them were of any use, but intention is what matters.
** His boast during his fight with Daruma indicates that he has improved his ability to put together CrazyPrepared-style battle strategies on the fly.
*** Heck, even before that -- even before the timeskip -- his fight with Perona was an excellent showcase of just how fast he can come up with plans once he knows what he's dealing with.
* CryingWolf: Comes back to bite him in the ass when pirates really do come to his island.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Usopp's dad, Yasopp, left him and his mother, Banchina, behind to become a pirate (though with her consent). His mother fell ill shortly after. He started telling lies about his dad returning to cheer his mom up, but she died anyway. He kept lying as a protective mechanism.
* DeadpanSnarker: Even Usopp has his moments, particularly when paired with [[IdiotHero Luffy]].
* DropTheHammer: The few attacks that don't involve his slingshots seem to be this; a slight subversion in that two of his hammers are anything but deadly. Although both of them seem to have some sort of psychological effect on the target.
* DubNameChange:
** The French manga has him renamed "Pipo" (a word for "lie") to keep the MeaningfulName.
** The Funimation dub and Viz manga change his alter ego's name from Sogeking to "Sniper King".
** The German anime and manga renamed him Lysop, a reference to the word "lie". Oddly, his name is pronouced as "Lüsop" instead of "Laisop".
** The pronounciation might come from the German word for lie, "Lüge".
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler:As of chapter 758, Usopp now has '''Observation Haki'''.]]
* FakeUltimateHero:
** His tall tales eventually gained him this status in Skypiea, where cover stories show a "Rubber Band Land" (as he'd claimed he'd destroyed the Giant Jack with his "Usopp Rubber Band") featuring a statue of himself looking not unlike Shandian hero Calgara. A running gag is that more and more of his lies come true as the series goes on.
** Sogeking also counts.
---> "On the Sniper Island, I was born. A hundred shots, a hundred hits! Lu lu lala lu Even a mouse's eye, lock on! Even your heart, lock on! The man who came from the Sniper Island lululu lala lu Run away! Sogesogesoge Sogeking!"
** It's gotten even more ludicrous as the Dressrosa arc continues [[spoiler:as he is dubbed "God Usopp", the roof of the weapons factory collapsing is perceived to be his miracle by the gladiator convicts, and Doflamingo issues the highest bounty to him out of the twelve that have been a massive hindrance to his plans for "defeating" Sugar alone]]. [[AscendedFanboy Bartolomeo]] was {{squee}}ing at being in the presence of "Sogeking": the man who set the World Government flag aflame.
* FantasticFlora: [[spoiler:Some of the Pop Green plants are quite strange, such as a plant that has a bouncy bubble on it and a wolf-shaped bushes, the bulbs of which release ''shock waves'']].
* FragileSpeedster: An odd case. He's a living double-subversion; he's not exactly super fast and not exactly fragile. He does run ''very'' fast, but more on par with a real-life Olympic sprinter than the super-humanly fast monster trio and Brook. He also will go down with a few hard hits, which is deemed "fragile" in the One Piece world... but considering those blows come from people who can punch holes in concrete, [[MadeOfIron he's really not that fragile either]].
* FriendToAllChildren: While all the crew is friendly to kids, Usopp is the most openly helpful, giving advice and offering aid publicly, while the other main defender of children, Zoro cloaks his in a stern, emotionless facade.
* FriendlyTarget: Suffered through this during the Water 7 arc.
* GadgeteerGenius: His main contribution to the crew.
* GagNose: A distinguishing feature and helps liken him to Pinocchio, also famous for lies.
* {{Gonk}}: A downplayed example. Usopp's bug eyes, long nose and large lips make him distinctly cartoonish-looking, which is especially noticeable when compared to the other "ordinary" men on the crew Zoro and Sanji, who are both drawn to be very handsome.
* GreenThumb: After the TimeSkip, he's able to fire off Pop Green seeds which immediately sprout things ranging from man-eating plants, to seaweed, to bamboo spears.
* HeavyVoice: Has one after gaining weight on the Bowin Islands. He loses the voice when he burns off the weight ''and then some'' though, gaining quite a lot of pure muscle over those 2 years.
* HeroWorship: He worshipped his father Yasopp, even though the latter abandoned his family to become a pirate (with his wife's consent) and causing Usopp to starte telling lies about pirates hoping he'll come back.
* HopeSpot: When Doflamingo initiated Birdcage, Usopp expresses relief that he wasn't one of the targets... except Doflamingo was saving the best for last: he ranked Usopp as the ''highest target of them all''.
* IconicOutfit: His original brown overalls with the bandanna and goggles as well as his first TimeSkip outfit, the baggy yellow overalls.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: He's able to take out soldiers several hundred yards away while standing on the roof of a building that's a good couple hundred feet tall. While it was very windy. With a goddamn slingshot/staff thing.
** Notably, the soldiers he's shooting at point out that even if they were able to aim reliably at this distance, their rifles ''couldn't shoot that far''.
** And now he topped that by sniping [[spoiler: Doflamingo's key ally Sugar]] from ''one country away''. '''''With another goddamn slingshot/staff thing!''''' King of Snipers indeed...
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He often alternates between bragging and being either cowardly (when played for laughs) or deeply insecure in his skills (when it isn't). This has lessened with CharacterDevelopment during and after the Water 7 arc.
* JackOfAllTrades: One of his defining traits and an essential part of his OvershadowedByAwesome neurosis. He's good at quite a bit, but there's a crew member that's better at it (except sniping). He can cook and has a decent sense of strategy (look at what he did in his fight with Luffy), but Sanji is the supreme chef and a genius tactician. He's shown some talent for stealth and deception, but Nami is a master thief and people actually believe her lies. He's an inventor and shipwright, but Franky rebuilt himself into a cyborg and created a CoolShip with a WaveMotionGun. He's competent at medical care (he's usually assisting in operation and the like) and a versatile fighter, but Chopper is a super doctor and has a devil fruit that allows him to do almost anything in a fight. And he's (surprisingly) physically resilient and has shown a good deal of charisma, but Luffy is made of HeroicSpirit and has warmed the hearts of people who have wanted him dead. Overall, he's the weakest fighter of the group, and even when it comes to being one of the smart/crafty guys. Even his gift at ranged combat is unfortunate, as he lives in a world where AnnoyingArrows seem to be the rule, and pretty much every fight of importance is resolved face to face.
** At the same time, he's a useful member ''because'' of this trope, considering how, at any point, when a crew member needs help, ''he'' is almost always the crew member to go to. With the above in mind, even though everyone is better at a certain thing than him, that doesn't mean he's bad at ''any'' of the above: on the contrary, he's quite skilled. The weakest crew member status is only really there because he doesn't ''specialize'' in one fighting style that ''isn't'' sniping. [[spoiler: Otherwise, why the hell do you think he has '''[[AwesomenessIsAForce Haki?]]''']]
* KiddieKid: Usopp was introduced as a 17-year-old young man who spent his time hanging out with a bunch of 8 year olds and told outrageous lies for no real reason other than the fun of it. Part of his character development is him turning from this into a true man like his father.
* LamarckWasRight: His new badassery (despite being the weakest of the crew) actually makes sense when you consider his pedigree. His dad Yasopp is the sniper of an ''Emperor's'' crew.
* LargeHam: He gets a little theatrical when boasting, but it's when he's being Sogeking that he really begins to ham it up.
* LetsGetDangerous: Sogeking. Also, other Straw Hats have fought Luffy, but because of some misunderstanding or starting out as a villain. Usopp is the only one who has ever challenged Luffy to a duel – and taught him the seriousness of being a captain in the process.
* LovableCoward: In Chapter 695, he says this:
--> '''Usopp:''' "Leave all wounded enemies with their backs to us to me!"
* MadeOfIron: Being the weakest doesn't stop him from getting beaten up just as bad as the Monster Trio. Sometimes ''even worse''. [[HeroicSpirit But that usually doesn't stop him.]]
* MagneticHero: It's strange, but there have been a number of times when the Straw Hats would've been screwed without Usopp showing up with new allies. His "8000 followers" boast might actually come true one day.
** He turned Oimo and Kashi against the Marines at Enies Lobby [[BigDamnHeroes in the nick of time]].
** In Dressrosa, he leads an army of dwarves.
** [[spoiler:After saving the toys, they change back to their original forms and they worship him like Jesus (not the Burgess guy). And they follow his command.]]
* ManChild: Not to the extent of Luffy (because who possibly ''could'' match Luffy as a ManChild anyway?), but he's still this after the Timeskip (before then, he qualifies as more of a KiddieKid). Aside from Chopper and the aforementioned Luffy, he's the one most likely to be seen goofing around, playing silly pranks, and getting excited over boyish things like robots despite almost being in his 20's.
* MaskOfConfidence: How Sogeking works.
* MeaningfulName: The "Uso" in Usopp means "Liar" or "Lie" in Japanese, and we all know what a (good or bad) liar he is.
* MilesGloriosus: In his introduction chapter.
* NeverBareheaded: He always has some kind of headgear on.
* NiceGuy: In spite of his cowardly nature, Usopp is a sentimental and fun-loving guy who would do anything for his friends.
* NiceHat: After the timeskip, Usopp begins wearing a yellowish hat.
* NightmareFace: [[spoiler:In the Dressrosa arc, Sugar feeds him a grape covered in [[BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce Tatabasco sauce]] that was actually meant for her. It made Usopp do such a horrific WildTake that Sugar was scared into unconsciousness, which rendered her toy powers useless, allowing everyone to remember and breaking Doflamingo's hold over Dressrosa. It's later weaponized by Usopp himself, by using a projectile bearing his earlier Nightmare Face to exploit Sugar's new fear of anything with long noses in order to save Luffy and Law from [[RetGone being turned into toys]]]].
* NoSell: He's completely immune to Perona's Negative Hollow since he's a natural pessimist.
* OnlySaneMan: At times when Luffy's around, though he's equally willing (or not willing) to join in on the silly antics.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: WordOfGod pegs him as the guy who will always be the weakest of the crew. Lampshaded when [[spoiler:he says he can't keep up with the rest of the crew's "monster" strengths during the Water 7 arc]].
* PaperThinDisguise: Sogeking. Only Luffy and Chopper failed to realize that it was actually him, and his bottom lip can be seen when he exclaims.
* PossessionImpliesMastery: Played straight. Usopp can operate or make wondrous inventions out of anything he can put his hands on, including a cannon (which he'd never operated before), advanced fireworks, and the bizarre "Dials" of Skypiea (which he could never even have seen or researched).
* PunnyName: It's a cross between "uso", the Japanese word for lie, and "{{Aesop}}".
* RunningGag: The "Rubber Band of Doom" attack, consisting of Usopp simply flicking a rubber band at the enemy. Whenever Usopp gets in a long string of attacks, expect the Rubber Band of Doom attack to show up right in the middle.
** Where is Sniper Island? [[spoiler:It's in your heart.]]
** All of Usopp's lies and stories actually happen for real at one point or another.
* TheReliableOne: Usopp is the LovableCoward, MilesGloriosus, and weakest member of the crew. So why is he this? [[spoiler: He lost a duel with Luffy and had to leave the crew at Water 7. However, when Usopp hears that Robin offered herself to the Marines he immediately joins the rest of the Straw Hats to take back Robin, ''in disguise''. He's saved Robin from death or worse twice. The first time was at Enies Lobby, when no one else was able to - '''the second time being in Dressrosa after he had lost all memory of her and didn't even know she needed saving'''. While doing that he also kick started a full-scale revolution by breaking a Devil Fruit curse on thousands of people. And with Luffy unaware of Doflamingo's most dangerous subordinate, he did it all on his own. There's a reason why Doflamingo, one of the most cunning and calculating pirates in the world, gives Usopp a higher bounty than ''Luffy, Law, or Sabo.'']]
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:To Doflamingo in the Dressrosa arc. Usopp took out a key member of the Doflamingo family by ''scaring her into unconsciousness''. The kicker is that said key member, Sugar, has the power to RetGone people by turning them into living toys, which has the side effect of erasing the memories of anyone related to her targets. Doflamino heavily relies on Sugar to maintain his FalseUtopia. When Sugar is knocked out, all of Doflamingo's plans fall apart. When bounties of the Straw Hats were posted in Dressrosa, Usopp's was ''five hundred million'']].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Has this dynamic whenever he's paired up in scenes with Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, or others like them. [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed, however]]. He's not ''that'' "sensitive" as much as he is simply practical and cautious; he more so comes off this way when contrasted to the Monster Trio's hyper masculinity and fearlessness.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: A RunningGag of his to haul ass while the gettin's good, and has done so at least once an arc. When he comes back though, he makes it count. [[spoiler:Saving Robin before Spandam can take her through the Gates of Justice and beating Choo during the fight against Arlong's crew are just a few examples.]]
* SmallNameBigEgo: When he lies, he speaks of himself as a MartyStu. Only Chopper ever believes him, though.
* TheSmartGuy: He looks like a ditz and occasionally acts like it, but he's come up with some decent plans and tricks to use in battle over the years. During their duel, he even discovered ways to bypass Luffy's innate rubber defense.
* SpiderSense: Awakened his [[spoiler: Observation Haki during a stressful situation on Dressrosa where he had to blindly snipe the enemy from ''miles'' away or doom the whole mission. Impressively, his very first use was good enough to see the target clearly through a wall from several miles away ''and'' get the perfect shot.]]
* TheStarscream: Parodied. He constantly refers to himself as the captain, but actually feels UndyingLoyalty towards Luffy.
* TheStoryteller: He frequently tells stories, and his name is a reference to Aesop. There's actually a RunningGag throughout the series of [[BecomingTheBoast Usopp's stories actually coming true.]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks like a combination of his mother and father's traits. Yasopp even looked like his son when he was younger.
* SuperSpeed: While it's not really super-human in itself, he's still a very fast runner. By fast I mean "being as fast as a Pacifista while carrying Zoro".
* TeamNormal: Along with Nami. Causes some self-worth issues at one point, but he eventually gets over it and becomes an ever-increasingly BadassNormal.
* TookALevelInBadass: Again, Sogeking. Post-timeskip, he has broader shoulders, large biceps, and more muscles in general. He still runs away when he is scared, but this time he attacks back, even when he faces creatures.
* TrickBullet: All of his ammunition.
* TroubledFetalPosition: Ended up here at the beginning of the Skypiea saga. Drowning, then falling, might do that to somebody.
* VoiceChangeling: He has a talent for mimicking other people's voices perfectly.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Post TimeSkip.
* WeakButSkilled: Physically the weakest of the crew (WordOfGod says he always will be, no matter what), but he's able to come out on top through a wide array of tools, gadgets and clever tactics. At this point, "weakest of the crew" just means he couldn't beat them in a straight-up fight... which is the one thing ''he wouldn't do anyway''.
** The best example of this for Sogeking would be sniping soldiers on top of the tower at Enies Lobby... where the wind was against him and not even guns can fire accurately. At a range guns can't even reach!
** An even better example is how the guy actually held his own against ''Luffy'', the inhuman powerhouse, for a respectable amount of time in their duel using only his intimate knowledge of his captain's fighting techniques and one day to get CrazyPrepared.
** His tools and gadgets now include summoning man-eating plants. Not to mention he's actually pretty buff now.
** [[spoiler: Recently, Usopp picked up on [[AwesomenessIsAForce Haki,]] or more specifically, Observational Haki.]]
* WeaponOfChoice:
** A slingshot; he upgrades to the Kabuto, a [[XOnAStick slingshot/staff hybrid]].
** His Black Kabuto turns out to be a LivingWeapon, it can change into a carnivorous plant called Chomping Grass that can eat things and spit them back out.
* WildTake: While exaggerated expressions are a common staple in ''One Piece'', Usopp is usually the first one to react whenever something crazy is going on. [[spoiler:It's weaponized in the Dressrosa arc, where being fed a super spicy grape turns Usopp's usual WildTake into a NightmareFace so horrific that Sugar, who can RetGone people by turning them into toys, is scared into unconsciousness, turning everyone back to normal and breaking Doflamingo's hold over Dressrosa. Usopp later exploits this to save Luffy and Law from being turned into toys by firing a projectile at her that heavily resembles his spicy grape-induced WildTake]].
* WouldHitAGirl: It's not an issue for him - actually, the fact that he often ends up fighting female enemies (especially young, harmless-looking ones who are [[NotSoHarmlessVillain actually quite dangerous]]) is approaching a RunningGag. It's also a RunningGag, however, that while he is perfectly willing to hit female enemies, he ends up defeating them without hitting them. Miss Merry Christmas was defeated by her own dimwitted partner who mistook her for Usopp thanks to some smoke, but his most recent tactic is apparently scaring the opponent to unconsciousness, as seen with Perona [[spoiler:and Sugar]].

[[folder:"Black Leg" Vinsmoke Sanji]]

Sanji is the crew's [[SmokingIsCool chain-smoking]], nineteen/[[TimeSkip twenty-one]]-year-old chef. [[ChefOfIron There is not a dish he cannot cook]], [[HandsomeLech a pretty girl he will not try to]] [[ChivalrousPervert woo]], [[VolleyingInsults or something he will not argue with Zoro over]]. As a chef, he believes that he cannot afford to harm his hands, and so uses a fighting style which uses [[ExtremityExtremist only his feet]] called the "Black Leg Style" (''Kuroashi no Waza''). He and Zoro argue and fight so regularly that it almost borders on FoeYay.

His dream is to find a legendary patch of sea called All Blue, where one can find species of fish from all over the world. His mentor, former-pirate-turned-restaurant-owner Zeff, is one he shares his dreams with, and Sanji worked under him as a way to pay Zeff back for saving his life when the two were stuck on a rock with barely any food when Sanji was a child.

Sanji has also shown some ButtMonkey tendencies lately, as he's become the butt of an ever-increasing list of jokes, including a ugly, poorly drawn bounty poster that no one has any trouble identifying him with, a man who ''resembles'' said bounty poster coming for revenge, and most recently, Kuma blasting him to an island filled with, of all things, drag queens, leading him to declare that [[IronicHell he is in Hell]]. While there, he learns of a special recipe to make the consumer stronger and trains with the 99 Newkama Kenpo masters.

His first bounty was 77,000,000 Berries. He was, however, frequently unrecognized since his old wanted poster was a poorly-drawn composite sketch. His current bounty is 177,000,000 berries, and he has finally gained an actual picture for his poster (albeit a goofy take of him with his typical "heart" eyes). Oddly, he is wanted alive, unlike the other Straw Hats and every other known criminal (who are all "dead or alive").
-----
* ABNegative: It turns out Sanji has a rare blood type. This becomes extremely problematic when the {{Nosebleed}} after {{Nosebleed}} he'd been suffering and had been PlayedForLaughs after being exposed to real women again caused him to go through all of Chopper's stock of that specific type. As a result, when a mermaid tries to keep him hidden by stuffing him into [[MarshmallowHell Marshmallow Heaven]], he has such an [[HighPressureBlood epic]] gusher that it becomes life-threatening. Further complicating the situation was the issue that due to some latent racism between humans and merfolks, those who had the blood type refused to donate either out of discrimination or fear of the enforcers of the regime.
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:His birth father, Judge. Judge sees him as a weakling son for his compassion towards commoners and refusal to abide by the family code of MightMakesRight, and willingly turned a blind eye whenever Yonji and Sanji's two eldest brothers beat him up for helping the starving poor, even refusing Sanji's pleas for help. Even after Sanji became fed up and ran away, Judge's behavior didn't change one bit. His response to Sanji CallingTheOldManOut after reuniting for the first time in years is to "take it outside" so he can beat him up, and the only reason why he had Sanji put in an arranged marriage with Charlotte Pudding is because he saw Sanji as a throwaway who is otherwise a useful tool in sealing the Vinsmoke family's alliance with Big Mom, one of the four Emperors. And apparently, he once made Sanji wear an iron mask and locked him in a cage]].
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: The Viz translation of the manga takes his regular attack names (one-word French cooking terms, for the most part), and adds a second word, usually alliterative with the first, to them, resulting in names like "Trompine Treader" and "Mouton Mallet".
* AllAccordingToPlan: He's the tactical mastermind of the crew and pretty much all of his plans work out the way he wants them to. But the most notable incident still is his Mr. Prince, complete with him saying those exact words while smiling deviously.
** Enies Lobby deserves special mention as well. Sanji disappeared from the fight, only to reveal later that not only did he rig the aiming of the cannons of several warships to miss the Going-Merry, but he also closed the Doors of Justice to create whirlpools that would make the larger ships stand still, but allow their tinier ship to escape. Given his due with Luffy's exclaim of "ARE YOU A GENIUS?"
* AlmightyJanitor: At least at first. During the Alabasta Arc, he went around kicking ass without even being recognized as a Straw Hat. He wasn't as well known as even Usopp at that point, but he's still in the top three fighters of the crew. It still kinda applies, as despite being Zoro and Luffy's equal in fighting ability, Sanji still doesn't have the third highest bounty of the crew; that would be Usopp (originally, it was Robin).
** Not to mention that the photo for his bounty poster isn't even him, but a badly drawn picture that barely resembles him, meaning he's the hardest member to identify.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: In classic chivalrous fashion. If a woman is in danger, Sanji will drop everything and save her immediately. Examples include running in the ''opposite'' direction of his goal to save the Marine woman Tashigi and deserting a rather important mission on Dressrosa to assist the FemmeFatale Viola.
** [[spoiler: He quickly runs into conflict with his brother Niji over this, as he steps in to protect a helpless chef that Niji was about to abuse. And when he ''does'' brutally beat her behind Sanji's back, Sanji immediately sets out to avenge her.]]
* AlwaysSecondBest: It's a bit of a subtle running gag that he's ''always'' just one step behind Zoro in every area (excluding such obvious things as cooking, leg strength, or directional sense of course). He's got the ''second'' deepest voice in the crew behind Zoro, he's ''one centimeter'' shorter than Zoro, he's ''always'' a little behind him strength wise, he always fights somebody who's a little weaker than Zoro's opponent, and his bounty is well below Zoro's despite the similar threat they pose. It pops up in other ways too, such as how he woke up just ''after'' Zoro did after Kuma attacked on Thriller Bark. Zoro himself, of course, mocks Sanji every time he bests him.
* AlwaysVSexy: [[spoiler: Once it was revealed that Sanji's last name is Vinsmoke, this trope applies.]]
* ArchnemesisDad: [[spoiler:Sanji and his father despise each other. Sanji outright admits to himself that the man never gave him a single decent memory, and feels only hatred towards him]].
* ArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler:To the thirty-fifth daughter of the Charlotte family, Pudding. Their wedding is supposed to be the centerpiece of one of Big Mom's tea parties, and the whole situation is courtesy of his father and Big Mom forming a political alliance. He's not too happy about it, though he still ends up love-struck by his beautiful bride to be when he actually sees her ([[ChivalrousPervert as you might expect]])]].
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Despite the above AlmightyJanitor and below Badass instances, Sanji will likely lose his train of thought if a pretty woman comes into his focus. One instance on the Punk Hazard arc is him chasing to help Nami and Robin but stops when he sees Monet. Not only does he stop, but the Marines who are following him stop as well to comment on how beautiful she is.
* BadassBaritone: When he's not fawning over women, his voice is the deepest in the crew after Zoro's.
* BadassBeard: He sports one after the TimeSkip.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Quite spiffy looking with that blue pinstripe shirt and classic black suit.
* BadassNormal: Not normal by our standards, but he's the only Straw Hat to not use either a Devil Fruit or a weapon, so he's literally just going with the rest of the crew and fighting with just his own two feet. Despite this, he's one of the three strongest members of the crew.
* BareFistedMonk: Well it's technically Bare ''Footed'' Monk. He never uses his hands in battle because he needs them undamaged to cook.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He is always annoyed with his lack of recognition, especially since his Wanted poster looked like Duval, and desires to be the most infamous pirate in the world. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that he is the missing third son of the criminal Vinsmoke family, a royal family of assassins, thus making him a prince by birthright and just a few steps in political power below the ''World Nobles''. The Vinsmoke family also consisted of people who constantly abused and bullied him for being weak as a child, which later caused him to run away and become a pirate. Looks like your wish finally came true, Sanji]].
* BerserkButton:
** Never insult his culinary skills or [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dytJmH3GWg steal his dream]] of eating the [[{{Invisibility}} Clear-Clear Fruit (''Suke Suke no Mi'')]]. Never suggest that he is incapable of protecting people.
** Wasting food is the ''one'' thing that has made him angry enough to use his fists against someone. Do ''not'' do it anywhere near him.
** Harming a woman or even ''attempting'' to harm a woman in any capacity is an easy way to get Sanji to kick your ass quickly.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Let's face it, no remotely important characters in ''Manga/OnePiece'' are remotely realistic, as far as their abilities are concerned.
** But who else goes as far as to perform ''plastic surgery'' in the middle of battle by rapidly kicking their opponent in the face?
** But who else ignites their feet for a special attack without getting burned, while underwater?
** Not to mention running faster than the speed of ''water pressure''.
** While not unheard of, flying in One Piece is a very exceptional skill to have.
** His nosebleeds can actually ''run Chopper out of his spare blood stock for Sanji's type.'' Chopper, by the way, also takes care of ''ZORO'' after fights.
* BigDamnHeroes: "Mr. Prince", followed later by "The Hunter".
** Saving Nami, Chopper and Brook from '''Doflamingo'''.
** [[spoiler: Saving Nami, Chopper and Brook AGAIN, this time from being trapped in Capone's body]].
* BigBrotherBully: [[spoiler:All of his brothers were this to him as kids (though it's inverted with Yonji, who is younger than Sanji but bullied him anyway). Sanji's older sister Reiju also counts since, while she didn't directly torment Sanji herself, she just stood by and laughed whenever her brothers beat him up]].
* {{Bishonen}}: A masculine example.
** A little less Bishonen after he grows out his facial hair during the timeskip, however. The transition from the thin teenage stubble to a full goatee has made him considerably less "young and pretty" looking.
** However, this trope still ends up {{Lampshaded}} by [[TheMafia Firetank Pirates]] member Gotti, who mockingly refers to Sanji as a "pretty boy".
* BlueBlood: [[spoiler: He hails from a bloodline which once ruled ''all'' of the North Blue, though he renounced his involvement with his family early in life.]]
* BlueIsHeroic: Sanji's [[ColorMotifs main color scheme]] is blue.
* BondOneLiner: Has a habit of giving these after winning major fights.
* BrickJoke: One that took a ''very'' long time, and was almost not certainly planned to be this: in Alabasta, Sanji gives the name "Mr. Prince" to Crocodile as his alias. [[ComicBookTime Two in-series years, and over a decade of real-life time, later]], we find out that [[spoiler:he actually ''is'' a blood-born prince of the Vinsmoke family, the rulers of Germa Kingdom and an infamous group of Underworld assassins]].
* BrooklynRage: In the 4Kids dub, ''and only the 4Kids dub'', Sanji was given a [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV-XdyuQngM&feature=related thick Brooklyn accent and an angry disposition]].
* ButtMonkey: Aside from Luffy, he's the Straw Hat most likely to be the butt of some joke or run into misfortune; he consistently is beaten up by Nami, rejected by most women, ends up in strange situations, and his quirks and mannerisms are sometimes jokingly mocked by the other Straw Hats when he's not present (aside from Zoro, who of course, will do it to his face).
* BurningWithAnger: As a RunningGag he bursts into flames when he's sufficiently enraged. Chopper even says "[[AngstNuke Awesome! He exploded!]]" at one point during one such instance. After the TimeSkip, he's ''weaponized'' it.
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler: Sanji clearly has no love for his three brothers (or his sister Reiju for that matter). It's heavily implied that he fought (and defeated) the youngest, Yonji, as soon as they met up again. It's later revealed that as a child, Sanji was frequently and viciously bullied by his brothers for being weak and showing compassion towards starving commoners, while Reiju let it happen and even laughed at his suffering]].
** [[spoiler: Though he hates all of them, he has a particular dislike for Niji, as he specifically notes that only ''Niji'' out of all of them is actually vindictive and petty enough to brutally beat an innocent cook to spite Sanji for defending her. This act practically lowers Niji to a level that's "lower than scum" in Sanji's eyes]].
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler: Does it ''immediately'' upon seeing his father for the first time in at least 13 years, and his dad in turn challenged him to a fight]].
* CasanovaWannabe: The chances of him actually sleeping with anyone he's wooed are practically nonexistent. [[spoiler:Then when the chance comes up after he is paired up with Charlotte Pudding, one of Big Mom's daughters, he turns it down, to the shock of his crewmates]].
* CatchPhrase:
** "Crap" as a prefix (e.g. his nickname for Zeff, "Kuso Jijii", means "Shitty Old Man"). It's almost a tic, since he uses it when describing non-crappy things, like 'dates' with Nami. This pisses her off enormously.
** '''~MELLORINE!!!~''' [[note]](Mellorine is a cheaper version of ice cream that's made from animal/vegetable fat instead of butter. [[FridgeBrilliance It could be an extension of how he says "Crap" to describe non-crappy things as mentioned above]].)[[/note]]
*** For a while after the time skip: "IIIII NEEEEED LADYYYYY!"
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: It's strange to think that he once (in the manga at least) almost shot Nico Robin, albeit an instinctive reaction to Vivi being threatened. [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse What ever happened to that pistol, anyway?]]
** He knows he can't hit her, so he grabbed a pistol hoping it would intimidate her. It doesn't work.
** As for the pistol, either it was just owned by the whole crew or Nami took it or had it given to her, because at one point (at least in the anime), Nami is seen holding it while preparing to fend off a possible attack.
** A different thing is [[HandsomeLech how he used to be able to attract women]]. Very, very weird when you look at his more [[CasanovaWannabe recent]] [[ButtMonkey portrayals]].
*** Actually, it may just be the main cast. Both the [[CreepyCrossdresser New Kamas]] and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.
*** And now, he has actually seemingly succeeded in pulling in a dancer on Dressrosa named Violet; she's actually ''returning'' his advances!
*** It's probably just the main cast (i.e. Nami). The mermaids, minkwomen, and Viola either don't seem to mind him or even find his antics funny/cute. He did creep out the first girls he saw on Sabody Archipelago after those two years though (including Perona).
** Sanji used to be more reserved and often always irritable, now he's not only high-strung, but he goes into goofy states of mind when involved with women. Justified, however; you try living on an island full of [[CreepyCrossdresser transvestites]] who think you're attractive and chase you everywhere you go while having absolutely no contact with real women ''for two straight years'' and see how you behave after that.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Considering his legs are strong enough to casually kick away large sea monsters, he definitely qualifies.
* ChefOfIron: Of the 'Ordinary' variety, although he names his attacks after food and cooking methods. He is capable of using cooking utensils as weapons with some proficiency, but prefers not to as they are meant for helping people, not hurting them. He NEVER uses food itself as a weapon, and others doing so is one of his [[BerserkButton Berserk Buttons]].
* ChekhovsGag: Remember Sanji's pervy face while he goofed off with those mermaids several years back? Well, his new Wanted Poster features that exact moment (down to the ''fish that were in the background''), and it ends up becoming a driving factor in [[spoiler: the reemergence of his family]].
* ChekhovsGun: His new bounty poster, the one with a legitimate picture of him reads [[spoiler:"Alive Only" instead of the typical "Dead or Alive" hinting someone powerful doesn't want him dead]].
* TheChessmaster: Sanji isn't just a great martial artist, he's also a genius-level manipulator, able to outsmart brilliant people such as Crocodile. He also shows a habit of playing people like fiddles through the series, usually opting to sabotage or confuse enemies covertly while the rest of the crew handles more direct approaches (such as prior to the start of the Enies Lobby Arc).
* TheChewToy: Started to become this roughly around Enies Lobby, when his dreams of mermaids being destroyed by [[{{Gonk}} Kokoro]]; his attempts at earning a bounty bearing fruit in the form of a poster with a [[FacialCompositeFailure God-awful composite sketch]]; his childhood dream of becoming {{invisible}} demolished because Absalom beat him to the punch in a way [[MoralEventHorizon he couldn't even envy]]; and finally meeting a man who hated him because his face was near-identical to that God-awful composite sketch. Ending up in an [[IronicHell island of transvestites]], where he was forced to briefly go native and wound up stuck there so long that he briefly experienced life threatening {{nosebleed}}s around real women.
*** He get better from the second half of Fishman Island arc getting several ThrowTheDogABone moments.
* ChivalrousPervert: Sanji is this trope so much so that he refuses to harm a woman even if it would cost him his life. Do ''not'' [[BerserkButton mistreat women in his vicinity unless you want him to]] [[UnstoppableRage literally explode with rage]].
* ColorFailure: When he heard Zoro saying he and Duval, whose ugly face matches the drawing from his wanted poster, are 'like two peas in a pod', [[http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/274/7/a/shocked_sanji_by_jasonpictures-d816yud.png he looks offended]], to put it mildly.
* CookingDuel: Gets into a few in anime {{Filler}}. [[SupremeChef He always wins, of course]].
* CulturedBadass: He's the number one ChivalrousPervert and SupremeChef, who loves to wear nice-looking suits.
* DanceBattler: Uses only his feet to fight, resulting in this on occasion.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Sanji was born the third son of the Vinsmoke family, a family of royal assassins who once ruled the North Blue (they're trying to fix that). Unfortunately, due to his family believing in MightMakesRight, Sanji's physical weakness combined with his compassion for the commoners of the Germa kingdom, made him a frequent target for physical and mental abuse - his older (and younger) fraternal quadruplet brothers Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji viciously beat him, his older sister Reiju did nothing to help him and laughed along to avoid getting bullied herself, and his father Judge saw him as a disgrace to their family legacy and frequently expressed it to his face. As punishment for intermingling with "rats", Sanji was frequently imprisoned in a cage while wearing an iron mask. His childhood became so unbearably hellish that Sanji eventually ran away to East Blue, where he became a ship's cook on the Orbit before it was attacked by "Red Leg" Zeff and his crew. A freak storm occurred, of which Zeff and Sanji were the only survivors, and both were marooned on an island where they experienced extreme starvation due to little resources. Because Sanji shared Zeff's dream of becoming a chef, Zeff helped him during their time on the island, even sacrificing one of his legs to feed him. Eventually they were rescued, but Sanji's horrific experiences shaped him into the man he is today]].
* DarkIsNotEvil: Sanji's [[BadassInANiceSuit stylish suits]] are usually black with a blue shirt.
* DefeatByModesty: During his (filler) duel against the substitute "Queen" of Kamabakka, he's soon forced to resort only to weak, low kicks because his opponents keeps peeping at his bloomers when he tries to kick him. (Sanji having been forced to wear a dress to get Caroline to fight him.)
* DefectorFromDecadence: Surprisingly enough. Not only is he on the receiving end of ThatThingIsNotMyChild from his completely abhorent father, and is the victim of horrific bullying from all his siblings, but the "family" he absolutely loathes is ''royalty'' with a complete disregard for the commoners, and soldiers of their kingdom and think using said soldiers as meat-shields, even going so far as to win a duel by stabbing at Sanji through one, is '''giving those soldiers an enviable honor.''' Even the worst pirate shown is nowhere near that depraved. Even Kuro didn't think killing his crew was a ''noble and righteous thing.''
* DirtyKid: Flashbacks to his childhood years while in Baratie (in Ch. 839) shows that he's been a perv ever since he's still a kid. Zeff repeatedly scolded him for it. The gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Family Time" even depicted him as a middle-schooler who "likes chicks" and goes to the girls' locker room while the girls are undressing to deliver Nami her things she forgot.
* DoubleJump: After the TimeSkip, he can replicate [=CP9=]'s Geppou, except he calls it "Sky Walk", and fly; that's what you get for running away from {{Creepy Crossdresser}}s [[TrainingFromHell for two straight years]].
* TheDulcineaEffect: To the point that he later develops a "damsel-in-distress" sixth sense.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: During the timeskip he discovered Haki.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Quite a few guys are attracted to him.
** Duval's slip of the tongue reveals he's got a crush on Sanji.
** [[spoiler:And he had the drag queens on Okama Island hitting on him and dressing him up for two years. [[TheWoobie Poor guy]]]].
** Also the [[IncrediblyConspicuousDrag two]] [[CampGay men]] on Fishman Island who gave him blood transfusions.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Knowing what is was like to nearly starve to death, Sanji will give anyone who is hungry food, be it friend or foe.
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: His attack names.
* EvilTwin: [[spoiler:Has ''three'' of them, in the form of male quadruplet brothers. Yonji is also a HandsomeLech with none of the chivalry. Ichiji has Sanji's cool head, but also a LackOfEmpathy. Niji contrasts Sanji the most, being very bratty, cruel, and spiteful while possessing ''none'' of Sanji's appreciation for food, compassion, or chivalry towards women and commoners]].
* ExactWords: He tells Nami that he grew up in the East Blue, but he was born "up north." Which, as Brook points out, could only mean North Blue. [[spoiler:It turns out he was actually born there, to an infamous royal family of assassins and military commanders]].
* ExtremityExtremist: His legs, of course. The explanation is that he needs his hands for cooking (though in earlier battles he was using his hands for handstands) (which, coincidentally, is similar to a principle of Capoeira - "hands are a tool of creation, feet are a tool of destruction" - and he also has some Capoeira-esque attacks).
* FakeoutMakeout: With Violet/Viola. It's vague enough that it could be just a hug though.
* TheFarmerAndTheViper: During his introductory arc, Don Krieg was left starving after Dracule Mihawk destroyed his fleet, and Sanji took pity on him by feeding him over everyone's protests. Krieg "thanked" him by attacking him the moment he felt satiated and declared his intent to claim the floating restaurant as his new flagship. Sanji likely knew that this would be the outcome, but having nearly starved to death himself, he wouldn't wish such a fate on ''anyone''.
* FastballSpecial: His ''Armée de L'air'' combo moves, in which he uses his powerful legs to launch his friends in the direction of the enemy.
* TheFettered: It's strongly implied that Sanji's strong enough to take on his siblings now, but is unable to unleash his full power because of their threats against Zeff and his adopted family.
* {{Foil}}: To [[spoiler:Donquixote Doflamingo. Both came from wealthy backgrounds, with Doffy being a former World Noble and Sanji being the third son of the Vinsmoke family, a royal family of Underworld assassins and commanders of Germa 66 whose power and affluence are almost on par with the World Nobles. Both left their cushy lifestyles at a young age, but Sanji did it willingly ''because'' his relatives are criminal assassins and because said relatives were quite abusive to him when he was a kid, while Doffy had to discard his title as a World Noble because his father wanted him to learn how to live among the commoners their neighbors so often mistreated, which Doffy never quite got over even as an adult and has been trying to be accepted back into Mariejois ever since. Both are very formidable fighters, but Sanji is a physical fighter whose kicks are aided by Haki, while Doffy is a Devil Fruit user who, while no slouch in direct combat himself, tends to heavily rely on his powers. Both have a talent at being TheChessmaster, but Sanji uses his talents to help people while Doffy's entire career lies in manipulating people and even caused an entire kingdom to suffer for it. Both Sanji and Doffy hate their fathers, but Sanji has a legitimate reason because Vinsmoke Jajji is a brutish man and abusive parent who believes in MightMakesRight and conquered the North Blue just to demonstrate his family's strength and power, while Doffy's father was kind and well-meaning but his idea of making his family leave the World Nobles to live among the commoners made Doffy lash out like a brat who was denied his allowance and kill him. Finally Sanji is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who genuinely loves his friends no matter how much he argues with them, while Doffy is an entitled yet very charismatic {{Sadist}} who treats his "family" as useful tools to further his own plans]].
* {{Flanderization}}: In Sanji's very first appearance, he was able to have actual ''conversations'' with women he was attracted to and attempted to woo. Now? [[LovableSexManiac Not]] [[CasanovaWannabe so much.]]
** He also went from generally suave and occasionally going gaga over women to going gaga by default and violent nosebleeds at worst after the TimeSkip, though this was a result of spending two years on an island full of transvestites.
** He's displayed some signs of ForgotFlandersCouldDoThat in more recent arcs however; though he still freaks out when talking to women far more than he originally ever did, he actually manages to talk like a human being long enough to leave a good impression on the mermaids, Viola, Carrot, and [[spoiler: Charlotte Pudding]].
* FlashStep: One of the skills he obtained during his stay on Momoiro Island.
* FoodPorn: Any scene where he's cooking/ serving food inevitably turns into this, as demonstrated during the filler G8 Arc.
* FoolForLove: Fool? He's a self-confessed ''slave'' to love.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** In the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Detective Loomes" (released in 2011), Sanji was depicted as a ProfessionalKiller who's OnlyInItForTheMoney. [[spoiler:Five years later, Sanji was revealed to be the third son of the Vinsmoke family, a group of royal assassins]].
** Sanji chooses the alias "Mr. Prince" when dealing with Crocodile; [[spoiler:we find out much late that, biologically, he ''is'' a prince of Germa Kingdom.]]
** No doubt that part of his irritation with "Iron Mask" Duval was [[spoiler: due to Sanji having once been put in an iron mask as a form of torture by his father]]. Combine that with Duval's resemblance to his ugly Wanted poster and it's no wonder Sanji got so mad.
* GeniusBruiser: Is very smart as well as strong and extremely fast.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Possibly. In one SBS Question Corner, the crew is asked what kind of season on what kind of island they like best. Sanji's reply is "I like Robin on a Nami island!"
* GoingNative: On the island of [[spoiler:drag queens]]...
* GoodIsNotNice: Possibly the result of being raised by an entire crew of rowdy [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold jerk chefs with hearts of gold]], he tends to be one of the meaner or ruder crew members towards the locals the Straw Hats meet (the men only of course) or prioritize the safety of the crew over ''all'' else. Not to say he's inherently always mean, but he does have his moments. One good example would be how he was ready to abandon the kids suffering under Caesar if not for Nami changing his mind.
* GratuitousFrench: Most of his attacks are cooking terms in French.
** Which wasn't kept in the 4Kids dub, instead giving every attack a corny food pun.
** The French attack names were reinstated for the Funimation dub.
* GreenEyedMonster: [[DownplayedTrope Played]] for laughs when he learns about [[LadyLand exactly where]] Luffy got sent by Kuma.
* GuileHero: Pretty good at making strategies, this trait was notably seen in the Alabasta as "Mr. Prince". [[IShallTauntYou With the amount of taunting]] and misdirection that went [[MagnificentBastard Crocodile's]] way, I think it's pretty safe to say he was the closest thing to a rival {{Chessmaster}} (after [[ReverseMole Nico Robin]]) in that arc.
* HadToBeSharp: [[spoiler:His siblings are basically SuperSoldiers, yet only Sanji showed that he was not much more than a normal kid]]. However, his experiences on the Grand Line as a pirate had toughened him to the point that he could easily defeat Yonji.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Sanji is the only Straw Hat with blonde hair and while he may be a [[HandsomeLech pervert]] and a [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold bit of jerk to his male crew members]], he deeply cares for every single member and will lay down his life for each of them.
* HandsomeLech: At first, his perverted tendencies were accompanied by women actually finding him charming, but later on, [[CasanovaWannabe his advances are always met with rejection and/or physical abuse]]. [[ForgotFlandersCouldDoThat Seems to be going back the other way, however]]. Both the [[CreepyCrossdresser New Kamas]] and the Mermaids seem to like him a lot.
** Likewise, he finds some success with Viola and [[spoiler: Charlotte Pudding. [[GenkiGirl Carrot]] also exclaims to Pudding that she's taken a liking to him as well]].
* HarsherInHindsight: An InUniverse example. [[spoiler: Nearly starving to death on an island at 10 years old is bad enough by itself, but the real tragedy is that this happened after Sanji had already fled from the same fate once; that is, having been left to waste away in a dungeon by his own father at only 8 years old. It's lucky, though, that Zeff's kindness gave him a chance to survive]].
* HeroicRROD: Relatively minor example, but there have been a few instances in which the force behind his kicks has been detrimental to himself, mainly after already taking a beating.
* HeroicSacrifice: Sanji tries to pull one after Zoro offers his life for Luffy's to Kuma. Tries being the operative word because Zoro knocks him out before he can go through it.
** [[spoiler: He does another one when he sacrifices himself to save Nami, Chopper, and Brook from Capone Bege]].
* HonorBeforeReason:
** Having nearly starved to death once as a kid, death by starvation is a fate he literally wouldn't wish on his worst enemy; if someone is starving, he'll feed them without exception.
** Due to a "strict upbringing," he won't hit a girl, even to save his own life or anyone else's.
* HopelessSuitor: He seemed like this back when Nami was the only girl around he could try to woo most of the time. This changed once other ladies joined the crew and it became more and more apparent he'd hit on anything with shapely hips and a nice rack (though given ''this'' series, those two criteria apply to about 95% of the post-pubescent girls the Straw Hats encounter). Nami is still the primary source of his attention, but by no means the only one.
* HotBlooded: Usually when the ladies are in danger, he gets so HotBlooded that he actually [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PGMyg5hY04 bursts into flames]] for comedic effect. It's also the author's explanation for him being able to pull off Diable Jambe, breaking the laws of physics in the process. ItRunsOnNonsensoleum indeed.
* [[IWantThemAlive I Want Him Alive]]: For some reason, the Marines have him registered as 'Wanted Alive' rather than 'Dead or Alive' like the other Straw Hats; his bounty of 177,000,000 is ''only'' valid if so. [[spoiler: This might be because the Vinsmoke family are world-renowned assassins and not people you want to get on their bad side by executing one of their estranged children.]]
* IconicOutfit: His very first black suit with the blue shirt and tie as well as his first TimeSkip suit with the orange shirt. Like Luffy, his outfit contributed to his In-Universe nickname, "Black Leg".
* ImAHumanitarian: He once threatened Absalom by saying he'd ''cook'' him, saying that given how many animals are part of him, he'd make "decent mince-meat". (He was ''probably'' bluffing, but given how much the two hate each other, it's hard to tell.)
* InASingleBound: He can jump ''very'' high, best seen when he defeats Satori in the Skypeia Arc ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLgUt4MLsOI here]]). He can also do a WallJump and, after the Timeskip, the DoubleJump.
* IncendiaryExponent: Weaponized, via his ''Diable Jambe'' technique.
** A Post-TimeSkip cover seems to imply that he went to PlayingWithFire as well. Which, of course, is later confirmed for all intents and purposes.
* InLoveWithLove: Practically oozes this trope as part of his ChivalrousPervert personality.
* {{Irony}}:
** Before the TimeSkip, Sanji always expressed annoyance over the lack of recognition that he receives, when it came to the bounties issued for the Straw Hats, ''especially'' when his own bounty was released, and it was just a poorly drawn poster of him. [[spoiler:This is all the more funny, or just curious, when you consider that his family are world-famous assassins. Accordingly, when that information is discovered, his wanted poster has a more flattering image (at the very least, an actual photo of him), and his bounty is considered only valid if he's captured alive]].
** [[spoiler:Flashbacks reveal Sanji was the weakest member of his family, causing him to be ostracized and abused by them. Come the present day, when he finally meets up with them again, he's strong enough to hand Yonji his ass]].
** The "Mugiwara Theatre - Detective Loomes" gag comic released in 2011 depicted Sanji as a ProfessionalKiller who is OnlyInItForTheMoney. [[spoiler:Not only does he hail from a family of royal assassins, he absolutely ''hates'' his family and wants nothing to do with them]].
** [[spoiler:For all of his biologically family's insistence that their MightMakesRight beliefs makes them "proper" royals and that Sanji is a disgrace to their name, it's the gentlemanly ''Sanji'' who acts like a royal should, which is saying something]].
** [[spoiler: Sanji finally getting a real picture for his Wanted Poster like he always wanted results in something he ''never'' wanted to happen, which is his family finding him.]]
* IronicHell: Blasted to an island of drag queens at the end of Sabaody and forced to join in. Kuma must have a twisted sense of humor... Also see TrainingFromHell below.
* JawDrop: [[spoiler:When his brother Yonji shows him Germa 66's secret cloning labs, Sanji responds with complete shock]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's often a {{Jerkass}} to the male members of the crew ([[DoggedNiceGuy The females]], however...), but he still loves and respects them as friends. Despite his flaws and rough exterior, he can also be really nice to others as well.
* JizzedInMyPants: Though with massive nosebleeds instead. After spending 2 years on an island full of Transvestites, it's become rather easy to set him off.
* KiAttacks: Post time-skip, he has awakened Haki. He seems to specialize in the Color of Observation. [[spoiler:He also showcases Armament Haki later on, during his fight against his father Vinsmoke Judge]].
* KingIncognito: Sanji is revealed to be [[spoiler:the 3rd son of a royal Underworld family called "Vinsmoke."]] What this means will be further investigated, as [[WordOfGod Oda stated]] that post-Dressrosa arc will focus a bit more on Sanji.
** To elaborate; [[spoiler: ''Sanji is actually a really, really big deal''. Not only is he rightfully a prince, but he hails from a family that has enough political pull to attend the Reverie, is feared worldwide for their brutality, can manipulate HQ Marines to do their bidding, has an Emperor interested in their services, and once ruled over the ''entire'' North Blue in the past- effectively meaning the Vinsmokes are only a step or two below the World Nobles when it comes to power. And he gave it all up. His sister Reiju is scoffs at him for choosing the "poor" life as a pirate over a prince, though he's unmoved by her criticism.]]
* KnifeNut: Sanji firmly believes that kitchen knives should not be bloodied in battle, as they are sacred instruments meant solely for the preparation of food. When fighting an opponent whose armor and weapons were made of food, though, Sanji decides that using knives [[AntiArmor to get rid of the armor]] would be no different from using knives to prepare a meal and displays an incredible knife-fighting style.
* LightningBruiser: Of the Hard-Hitting-Speedster variation, as he's the second fastest member of the Straw Hats while his physical power is roughly the same as that of Zoro and Luffy.
* LovableSexManiac: Emphasize on ''Sex Maniac''.
* LoveCanMakeYouGonk: He can make some pretty strange facial expressions when he's gushing over pretty women.
* MadeOfIron: He can withstand the sea pressure 5000 meters underwater and tank massive explosions without protection, among other things. Even in his introductory arc, he fought on just fine even after getting his ribs broken.
* MafiaPrincess: [[spoiler:Sanji is revealed to be a literal ''Mafia Prince'' due to the Vinsmoke family being an infamous group of royal Underworld assassins and military commanders with enough political clout to have Big Mom, one of the four Yonkos, to be interested in an alliance with them. He also plays it straight [[AbusiveParents for extremely]] [[BigBrotherBully justified reasons]]]].
* ManIFeelLikeAWoman: When Law puts his heart in [[spoiler:Nami's body, Sanji can't resist the urge to peep at or feel him/herself up.]]
* MarshmallowHell: Has received this twice, both times from beautiful mermaids, much to his delight.
* {{Megane}}: Sometimes wears glasses. Much to the fangirls' joy!
* MissingMom: A line by [[ArchnemesisDad Judge]] reveals that his mother died when he was very young. The same line implies that he inherited his kindness from her.
* MistakenForGay: By a whole flock of crossdressers.
* MrFanservice: Unfortunately for straight male ''One Piece'' fans, looking for art of him on the internet will turn up pages and pages of HoYay and Bishonen pictures with Zoro. And unfortunately for him, none of his fan girls in real life can reach him through the computer screen.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: His torso became fairly well built after the time-skip, developing more defined abs than he previously had; but his overall physique remains very slim, with his limbs actually being just about as skinny as Nami's limbs. But, regardless, he can still send men twice his size and muscular-build flying with a single kick and launch giant monsters into the air like nothing. Interestingly, while other characters frequently [[LampshadeHanging notice Luffy's oddly powerful muscles]], nobody seems to call Sanji out on this one.
* MysteriousPast: For years, the story never actually directed attention to Sanji's past before the Cook Pirates incident. All that was known is that he was born in the North Blue and worked on a cruise liner (all the way in the East Blue) at age 9. [[spoiler:It's finally revealed that he is the third son of the Vinsmoke family, an Underworld group of royal assassins who are also commanders of the evil army Germa 66, and former rulers of the North Blue. He also has four biological siblings - one being his older sister and eldest sibling (Reiju), and the other three (Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji) being his older and younger ''fraternal quadruplet'' brothers. It's also later revealed exactly how Sanji ended up in the East Blue: he ran away from his family because they constantly abused and bullied him for being a compassionate weakling, and even his older sister Reiju didn't lift a finger to help him, instead laughing at his suffering every time she saw Sanji being punished for helping starving commoners. It's also later revealed that ''all'' of Sanji's siblings (including Sanji himself) were artificially designed to be SuperSoldier {{Tykebomb}}s with Devil Fruit-like powers and taught by Judge to become excellent military commanders that will lead Germa 66 to greatness, but when Sanji failed to produced results, he was forever labeled a "weakling" and imprisoned in the family dungeons to die of starvation]].
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: He reveals he's big on this in his fight with Absalom; about 80% of the beating he takes in that fight is a result of trying to keep the unconscious Nami out of the way of stray attacks.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler:Sanji didn't know it, but having Duval as his {{Doppelganger}} gave him protection from his abusive family, especially his father Judge who had been tirelessly searching for him with less than benevolent intentions in mind after Sanji ran away. Fixing Duval's face resulted in the Straw Hats gaining an ally, but that also meant Sanji's family were able to easily find him now when new bounties were posted. [[FridgeHorror Imagine if Sanji was found by Judge before the Sabaody Arc happened]]]]...
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: In an SBS in vol. 68, Oda [[WordOfGod confirmed]] that Sanji was modeled after Creator/SteveBuscemi as Mr. Pink from the movie Film/ReservoirDogs.
* {{Nosebleed}}: It happens so much during a period of shock after being separated from women he actually needs a blood transfusion.
* NotHyperbole: In the "Thriller Bark" arc, Sanji claimed that one day, he'd be the most infamous member of the Straw Hat crew. For a while, it seemed like just a delusion made up by his [[SmallNameBigEgo ego]], [[spoiler:but then, in the Zou arc, we find out he wasn't kidding as he's actually a member of the infamous Vinsmoke family]].
* NotQuiteFlight: Sometime during the two-year timeskip he taught himself CP-9's Geppo, renaming it "Sky Walk".
* NumericalThemeNaming: [[spoiler:Shares this with his three fraternal quadruplet brothers Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji. He's "Sanji", "San" being the Japanese word for three and a reference to the order he was born in among the four of them. His name is also a pun on "three o'clock". The number three also represents social alienation - he was his family's [[TheUnfavorite least-favored]] child and was constantly abused for being weak as a kid]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** When Luffy points out the very harsh, but necessary truth that it's naïve to hope that all people involved in a war will survive, Nami gets angry at Luffy for being so blunt and not considering Vivi's feelings. It's extremely telling that ''Sanji'' is the one to tell Nami to shut up and not cut off Luffy. Usually, he would ''never'' show agreement with his male crewmates if he can please his female crewmates instead, but in this situation he apparently agreed with Luffy so much that he forgot his principles.
** In the Post-Enies Lobby arc, when Zoro is completely adamant that Usopp not be allowed back into the crew until he apologizes for disrespecting their captain. When Nami protests that Zoro is being too harsh, Sanji actually speaks up for the first time to say that, to his own chagrin, ''Zoro is absolutely right''. The fact that Sanji openly sides with ''[[VolleyingInsults Zoro]]'' over ''[[LoveInterest Nami]]'' says a lot about just how strongly he must have felt about the issue.
** Luffy, Nami, Chopper, and Brook are noticeably shocked when [[spoiler:they learned he turned down marrying Pudding, an attractive young woman]].
* OffScreenMomentOfAwesome: Sanji gets a lot of these. Whenever one of his friends is wondering out-loud where he is exactly, it's usually because he's saving the day somewhere else.
* OhCrap:
** Usually calm and composed, he had an epic one [[spoiler:when he realize who exactly are the inhabitants of Momoiro Island]].
** [[spoiler:Seeing his eldest fraternal quadruplet brothers Ichiji and Niji for the first in years since running away caused him to tremble. Seeing how Ichiji and Niji were able to frequently overpower him during Sanji's childhood bullying, it's justified]].
** [[spoiler:[[http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/4/4c/Sanji_learns_he_is_about_to_be_married.png/revision/latest?cb=20160829075300 His face when he reads a marriage announcement letter that reveals his family connections]] says it all]].
** [[spoiler:Judge notes that Sanji turned paler than usual after threatening to kill [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]] in order to force his compliance with his marriage to Pudding]].
* OutOfFocus: He, Chopper, Nami, and Brook during the second half of the Dressrosa Arc. They were absent from the story for more than a year and a half in the real world before reappearing (from December 2013 to July 2015).
* ParentalSubstitute: He sees and treats Zeff like a father figure despite their constant arguing and insult-volleying. [[spoiler:When Sanji's biological father Judge uses Big Mom's connections to locate Zeff and threatens to kill him if Sanji doesn't comply with the marriage to Pudding, Sanji [[OhCrap becomes paler than usual]]]].
* PeekABangs: His left eye has always been covered by his hair, though WordOfGod said that it was perfectly functional under there. He's even held a pair of binoculars up to it before. Later on, he switched the bangs to the other side, revealing that both his eyebrows swirl in the same direction.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Both he and Pudding would be thrilled to [[spoiler: be married to each other if it wasn't for the fact that Sanji would have to give up being on Luffy's crew, and possibly the dream of finding "All Blue."]]
* PersonalityPowers: He fights by kicking people, which is less barbaric than punching people, which also results in him becoming a DanceBattler, which also fits his (mostly) refined and cultured personality. Giving him [[PlayingWithFire fire powers]] was also appropriate since he is HotBlooded (when he isn't being TheChessmaster and a SpannerInTheWorks) ''and'' a SupremeChef who wants to cook even better once he finds the All Blue. His "Sky Walk" ability, basically {{Flight}} represents him running away from the okamas in Momoiro Island for most of the 2 years he's there.
* PlayingWithFire: His "Diable Jambe" technique involves lighting his effing leg on FIRE, [[FrictionBurn via friction]], and attacking with it. Interestingly, while Oda joked that his Hot Blood is what allows him to do it, it seems to be turning into a true ability, with him bursting into flames during his anger and characters commenting on it on enough occasions to make one wonder if it was just a joke or not.
** Confirmed to be canon in chapter 646. Sanji, [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum in some kind of way]], can actually ignite his entire body on fire by "thinking of those 2 years in hell" and then transfer that fire onto his opponent with a kick.
** This actually makes sense (or at least as much sense as you would expect in the world of One Piece). After all, Zoro's Asura technique is made possible through the use of his fighting spirit. Who's to say Sanji can't make flames via the same principle? This power of fighting spirit is very similar to the already established power of Haki, aka Willpower.
* PornStash: Apparently, he keeps tons of dirty magazines in his locker (along with a few books on seafood).
* PrettyBoy: He's a [[MrFanservice refined, handsome man]]. This gets explicitly lampshaded in chapter 825, in which [[spoiler: Gotti]] calls him a "pretty boy."
* PrincelyYoungMan: You could sort of consider him one, not to much by virtue of him thinking he's a prince, but the fact that he treats Nami and Robin like princesses and sort of thinks of himself as their knight. [[spoiler:Later played straight (literally!) when his status as a Prince of the Germa Kingdom is revealed]].
* PunnyName: His name is a pun on the way the Japanese say "3 o'clock". However, the word Sanji can also refer to something that is a terrible, horrible accident that makes one want to avert their eyes and break out the BrainBleach. Veeeerry appropriate. [[spoiler:Chapter 812 reveals that he's the 3rd son in a family called Vinsmoke, adding to the puns, as Sanji can mean "third son."]]
** [[spoiler: Though it's not exactly a pun, it is a funny coincidence that a boy from the "Vin-SMOKE" family grew up to be a chain smoker]].
** [[spoiler:"Vin" is French for "wine", which means Sanji's family name is a play-on-words that describes a certain wine flavor (smoky wine). Considering he's a SupremeChef...]]
* RaisedByDudes: He was raised primarily by men who taught him to cook and fight. Which makes his foul mouth obsession with women a bit more... understandable. [[spoiler:The obsession with women is later revealed to be a {{Shared Family Quirk|s}} with the Vinsmoke family, though the foul mouth still seems to be from the chefs at Baratie]].
* RealMenWearPink: He cooks with a pink panda decorated apron. Similarly, a few of his outfits over the years have featured the color pink.
* RedOniBlueOni: Zigzagged. When compared to Zoro, Sanji's the Red Oni in that he is very romantic and prone to fits of poetic and flowery speech when describing the things he loves (i.e. Nami and Robin) and his ultimate fighting style relies on getting so emotional he bursts into flame. However, some of his most successful moments have been when he's kept a cool head and done something strategic instead of flying off the handle and getting into a fight (see Alabasta and Skypiea, where his machinations did more to stop the BigBad's plans than a fight would have). Zoro on the other hand, is a [[TheStoic stoic]] swordsman who usually maintains an icy calm even when fighting, but when suitably provoked he can become a BloodKnight.
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: [[spoiler: He's the third son of the Vinsmoke family, who are not only North Blue royalty, but a family of underworld ''assassins'', making him a [[MafiaPrincess Mafia Prince]] of sorts.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Gives one to his entire family after they admonish him for defending a lowly cook, calling them out on their appalling behavior as royals]].
* TheRunaway: [[spoiler:Of the "Abused Runaway" type. Despite being automatically a prince and royalty by birthright due to being a Vinsmoke, Sanji ran away to East Blue as a child due to his family's utterly '''''horrendous''''' treatment of him]].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Usopp's Sensitive Guy whenever they get scenes together.[[spoiler: However, it might come as a surprise to know he had this dynamic in childhood with his brothers as the Sensitive Guy- and they bullied him mercilessly for it. Even in present day, he comes off as this when contrasted to their complete LackOfEmpathy and callousness]].
* SharedFamilyQuirks: [[spoiler: Both his younger brother Yonji and his older sister Reiju share his perverted tendencies, as Yonji ogles Nami the second he sees her while Reiju seems to enjoy giving the poisoned Luffy a KissOfLife a little ''too'' much. Also, Reiju has very powerful kicks, being able to send their little brother flying with one strike. His older brother Niji also seems to have a preference for kicking and his HotBlooded tendencies (but in a bad way)]].
* SharpDressedMan: A suit is his standard form of attire, usually only wearing more casual clothes during transitions between arcs.
* ShootTheHostage: He threatens to shoot [[spoiler:Caesar Clown if Bege goes after his friends, knowing full well Bege cannot shoot him because someone wants him alive and mostly unhurt]].
* SiblingYinYang: [[spoiler:Yonji is a pervert like Sanji, but he lacks his chivalry. But Niji, out of all his siblings, contrasts Sanji the most - aside from having an explosive temper, Niji is spoiled, ungrateful, unappreciative towards food, and has none of Sanji's compassion towards commoners and women]].
* SitcomArchNemesis: This is largely what Zoro is to him despite being in the same crew (similar to Buggy and Shanks' relationship when they were on Roger's ship). These two never miss an opportunity to belittle, one-up, or humiliate the other.
* SirSwearsALot: To be expected, as he was raised by sailors, and inherited their colourful vocabulary (see his {{catchphrase}} above). The English anime translates this by having him swear among the most out of anyone in the crew, "bastard" being a particularly favorite word of his.
* SmokingIsCool: Due to FCC regulations strictly banning smoking in shows intended for children, both English dubs had to cover this up when they aired on TV. They did it by either editing his cigarette out altogether (Creator/{{Funimation}}), or by turning it into a lollipop ([[Creator/FourKidsEntertainment 4Kids]]).
* SpannerInTheWorks: ''VERY'' frequently. His unknown at the time identity allowed him to rescue the crew from Crocodile's death trap in Alabasta, he trashed Eneru's airship long enough for Luffy to get back into the fight (and stop him from putting all his focus into destroying Skypiea), and his closing the Gates of Justice not only allowed them to escape Enies Lobby without being pursued, but significantly slowed down the pursuing marines during the chase itself.
* SpiderSense: One of the many people who've awakened the Observation Haki, which works like spider sense. WordOfGod claims that he specializes in this type of Haki.
* TheStrategist: Proven to be one of his defining characteristics at least twice in every arc from Alabasta on. [[spoiler:This was the result of being trained by his biological father Judge to become a Germa 66 military commander from a very early age]].
* StrongFamilyResemblance: [[spoiler:All of his Vinsmoke siblings resemble him to some degree, bearing his trademark swirling eyebrows and PeekABangs. Reiju and Yonji in particular resemble Sanji the most, with Reiju looking like the end result if Sanji was turned into a woman, while Yonji is Sanji's splitting image (save for the hair) and even has his perverted tendencies. In the case of Sanji and his brothers, it's later justified with the reveal that they're fraternal ''quadruplets'', born on the same day, which is why they resemble each other so closely]].
* StupidGood: A variation - he's not completely stupid (in fact, [[TheChessmaster he's far from it]]) but thanks to nearly starving to death as a kid, Sanji has no problem feeding a starving man. Even if that starving man and his crew of equally-starving pirates are obviously planning to attack him afterwards.
** Also, he ''absolutely refuses'' to harm women physically as a part of his chivalrous code, even if there's a serious risk they could kill him. Even Nami seems to think it's admirable, but she also points out how stupid it is in practice.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Notable considering half the Straw Hat crew have Devil Fruit powers and can't swim at all. Way back in the Arlong Arc, he held his own against a Fishman ''underwater'', and he was down there for several minutes.
** He has an underwater version of [[DoubleJump Sky Walk]] called "Blue Walk" and is said to be as fast as a fishman, which is pretty fast considering they're the ''third fastest swimmers in the sea''.
** When diving for Kinemon's torso, Sanji straight up mentions that he is the fastest swimmer in the crew by a lot, even without Blue Walk. Considering that Zoro remained silent when he normally calls bullshit on anything Sanji does that isn't remotely true, one can take that small piece of information as true fact. (Though he's really only comparing himself to [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative Nami, Usopp, Zoro and Franky]], everyone else just sinks, and Franky's half metal).
* SuperSoldier: [[spoiler: He and his siblings were genetically enhanced in childhood by their father to become these and lead the Germa 66's armies. However, Sanji showed no signs of improvement despite his genes supposedly being successfully modified on paper, leading to him being bullied and beaten by his father and brothers.]]
* SupremeChef: Makes some of the best damn food you'll find on the Grand Line. And he joined the crew to fulfill his dream of finding some mysterious and awesome ingredients that can only be found in the All Blue, so he can cook even ''better''. A lot of the FoodPorn in the show can be contributed to him, ''especially'' in the G8 filler arc. [[spoiler:His beautiful bride-to-be Charlotte Pudding also being a SupremeChef causes him to fall in love with her instantly (and not the kind of love he usually experiences whenever he sees a pretty lady), but alas, he's too attached to the Straw Hats to marry her]].
* TakeMeInstead: During the Thriller Bark arc, to [[spoiler:save Luffy from Kuma, and prevent Zoro from sacrificing his life. It doesn't work, as the latter knocked him out for the exact same reason.]]
* TakenForGranite: PlayedForLaughs. After his two years in "Hell", he is so susceptible to women's looks that just LOOKING at Hancock does this to him. Shirahoshi as well.
* TeamChef: It's a good idea to not insult his cooking skills. He'll beat you up for it. And probably suspend your eating privileges.
* ThemeTwinNaming: Well, theme ''quadruplet'' naming, anyway. "San" and "Yon" are the Japanese words for 3 and 4 respectively, as reference to the order he and Yonji were born in. Combined with the "ji" at the end of their names, they're also puns on "three o'clock" and "four o'clock". Reiju also shares this number theme naming despite not being one of the quadruplets.
* ThrowTheDogABone: After two painful years on an island of transvestites, Sanji finally meets mermaids, and they ''like'' him. He's even able to resist nosebleeds for a while to play with them.
** Similarly, Oda occasionally decides to spare him and let him at least touch a woman, and on two separate occasions he has had his face stuffed in into a girl's breasts. Nosebleeds ensue.
** You can probably consider it a near miracle that [[spoiler: his wife to be, Pudding, is ''actually attractive''.]]
* TrainingFromHell:
** Underwent this as a child [[spoiler:alongside his siblings, to shape them into the super soldiers their father wanted them to be. However, Sanji failed to do any progress, despite having been genetically enhanced like his siblings]].
** Underwent another one training to be a chef in the Baratie under Zeff, which was equal parts learning how to cook as it was seeing if he could survive the kicks of the "Red Leg". Ironically, it was under ''this'' training that developed his CharlesAtlasSuperpower, [[spoiler:and not the SuperSoldier training with the Germa 66]].
** During his two years of training in IronicHell over the TimeSkip Sanji has become so fast that he can now [[LightningBruiser move at an absurdly fast speed UNDERWATER while maintaining his superior kicking power]]. He got the skill from running away from transvestites on that scary island for two full years. He also gained the skill to run on air. So, yeah, he can fly.
* TraumaCongaLine: To sum up, [[spoiler:he was defeated by Kuma, sent on a island full of Drag Queens, is accidentally mistaken for a crossdresser by the inhabitants, chased along the whole island, forced to fight the "Queen" in dress and make up, humiliated and tricked into becoming a crossdresser himself. Thankfully, he got better.]]
** Let's not forget how he was forced to admit that his poorly drawn Wanted Poster is actually him in order to get Ivankov to tell him about what happened to Luffy. This is such a monumental strain for him it actually results in ''BloodFromTheMouth''.
* TykeBomb: [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. He and his siblings were genetically enhanced after birth and raised to be physically superior to the average human in order to lead the Germa 66's armies to their greatest victories. However, in Sanji's case, the modifications failed for some reason and he didn't grow any stronger than your average human child]].
* UndyingLoyalty: No matter how much he argues with them (especially the men), Sanji deeply treasures the Straw Hat crew and will do ''anything'' for them when push comes to shove. [[spoiler:Not even the chance of being married to the beautiful Charlotte Pudding (who's also a SupremeChef) and being able to live like a prince as a member of the royal Vinsmoke family is able to deter him]].
* TheUnfavorite: [[spoiler:The entire Vinsmoke family sees Sanji as this, due to being a compassionate weakling as a child who refused to abide by the code of MightMakesRight, to the point of inflicting constant physical abuse on him. Sanji later got fed up with their treatment and ran away to become a chef in East Blue while still young]].
* UnusualEyebrows: His eyebrows twirl into two big ol' spirals on the ends; and, predictably, they are often the source of ridicule. Oddly enough though, both of his eyebrow spirals curl ''to the right'', meaning his eyebrows are asymmetrical on his face. Which may explain why he chooses to hide one of eyes at all times [[PeekABangs with his hair]]. (pre-TimeSkip he covered his left eye, post-Time-skip it's his right). [[spoiler: The swirly brows seem to run in his family, to boot. It should be noted, however, that his family members' brows all swirl in the opposite direction of his]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: [[spoiler:While Sanji is still compassionate and willing to help others, he showed it more often when he was younger. His abusive family and nearly starving to death hardened him, unfortunately]].
* VerbalTic: Since a young age, Sanji has a habit of saying "shit" or "shitty" when describing something. While the Japanese word for feces, "kuso", is not specifically an expletive, Sanji's manner of speech makes the term sound brash. For example, he might call a person he especially does not like a "shitty bastard" or something along those lines (such as his personal nickname for Zeff, "shitty geezer"), but he also described something pleasant to him, like being alone with Nami, as "shitty fantastic" and "the shitty best". In the FUNimation dub, this habit is downplayed to swearing that is less offensive.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He's not shy about insulting or arguing with the male Straw Hats, especially Zoro, but he's also willing to go quite far in defending them despite claiming to only care for the women.
** And before he even joined, there was his relationship with Zeff. The two slung so many insults at each other and got in so many fights that the other cooks at Baratie were surprised to find out how much the they actually cared about each other.
* VolleyingInsults: Quite often with Zoro, as well as his surrogate father Zeff.
* WeaksauceWeakness: [[WouldntHitAGirl He refuses to harm women in any way]], though he is capable of blocking their attacks. This causes near-fatal problems during the fights with Bon Clay and Kalifa. Nami even criticizes him on this trait.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark:
** In the Thriller Bark arc, despite their rivalry, Sanji steps up and offers to sacrifice his life for Zoro when [[NoNonsenseNemesis Kuma]] threatens to kill him.
** Push comes to shove [[spoiler: when his rich birth family returns to take him back, and they try wooing him with promises of [[SexSlave "personal maidens"]], money, and marriage to the beautiful [[{{Moe}} Charlotte Pudding]]. Sanji, against even his crew's expectations, refuses it all and stays absolutely set on leaving with Luffy and all of his friends.]]
** [[spoiler:Part of why Sanji was bullied by his brothers as a child was because he was willing to cook and serve food to others behind the family's backs]].
* WhiteSheep: Despite coming from a family of assassins, Sanji seems to have more integrity, as seen when he calls a portrait of his father conquering four North Blue kingdoms tasteless. [[spoiler:This even stems from his childhood. Sanji was an outcast in his family because he was weak[[note]]Despite having the same genetic enhancements as his other siblings, he somehow always fell behind when he trained, which irritates them[[/note]] and compassionate towards others[[note]]Judge dismissed Sanji's compassion as "trying to hold the legacy of someone already dead" (that is, his mother).[[/note]]]].
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Sanji appears to have some fear or aversion to insects. During the crew's search for the South Bird, he continually backed away from the various insects in the forest to the point he was afraid to touch them.
* WifeBasherBasher: Abusing women (even evil ones) in front of Sanji is a '''bad''' idea; as in an [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown "ending up on the WRONG-side of a one-sided ass beating"]] bad-idea.
* WingdingEyes: Prone to developing "heart" eyes whenever he's swooning over a lady.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Really the only reason he and Vergo fought was to build up the latter's threat level]].
** Before the timeskip, Sanji is easily defeated by Ivankov to put his power in perspective.
** Let's not kid ourselves. The only worse offender of this than Zoro is Sanji. It happens to him once an arc, including freaking FILLER arcs. Notable examples include Eneru (couldn't even hit him once despite wearing shoes with rubber soles), Smoker (in the manga), Arlong, Blueno (after revealing Robin's intentions, Sanji had no use for holding back and still got beat), and Absalom (possibly a deconstruction, since it was really just a penguin fighting as Sanji, though the other zombies note he's quite powerful).
** [[spoiler:Sanji got beaten by his father during the fight with him. Downplayed in that Judge merely knocked him unconscious with his electric blast attack; Sanji's mostly unharmed otherwise]].
* WorfHadTheFlu: He might have won against Gin, but the wounds he sustained while Pearl beat him up while he was unable to retaliate due to Zeff being held hostage immobilized him at a crucial moment.
** [[spoiler:He's quickly taken down by Niji in their first fight, but it should be noted that Ichiji distracted him for a second and Niji managed to sneak up on him while he was looking away.]]
* WouldntHitAGirl: No matter how badly she'll beat him as a result of a "strict upbringing". See also WeaksauceWeakness above.
** According to an [[WordOfGod SBS]], it's not that Sanji won't hit a girl, it's that he can't hit a girl for some reason.
** Also deconstructed once, when an intelligent female enemy used it against him so he wouldn't be able to help Robin.
** {{Averted}} ''one time'', when the crew first met Robin as a member of Baroque Works after Whiskey Peak. When they all drew weapons on her, he held a pistol to her head. Usopp even [[LampshadeHanging hung a lampshade]] on how out-of-character the act was. Sanji reasoned she was a threat to Vivi... ''then'' he noticed what Robin actually looked like. [[DoubleSubversion Cue hearts in the eyes.]]
** In video game adaptations, he can be forced to fight against female enemies, and in some cases, he will [[ApologeticAttacker apologize with each attack]]. In the [[VideoGame/OnePiecePirateWarriors Pirate Warriors]] games, his attacks will never hit or affect female enemies[[note]]Crew Strikes let him call in someone else to defeat them for him, but it's still such a problem the game flat-out warns you if he tries to start a mission containing female enemies[[/note]].
* YouAreNotMyFather: [[spoiler:After being reunited with his father Vinsmoke Judge for the first time in 13 years, he immediately says that he does have a parent, and Judge isn't him. Completely justified, since Judge is an abusive asshole while Zeff, though stern and demanding, deeply cared for Sanji like his own son while the latter lived in the East Blue]].

[[folder:The ''Going Merry'']]
[[quoteright:290:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/going_merry_7836.png]]

->Voiced by: Creator/HoukoKuwashima (JP), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (EN)

The Straw Hat Crew's first ship, a caravel-class ship designed by Merry in East Blue for Kaya to give to the Straw Hats (then comprising of Luffy, Zoro, and Nami; Usopp comes with the ''Merry'') to reward them for taking out Captain Kuro and his Black Cat Pirates. Over time, the ship came to be loved by the crew as a home and as a friend, so much so that it literally took on a life of its own and became just as much a part of the crew as any of them.

----
* AnimalMotifs: Sheeps. Sheeps are symbols of purity and loyalty, traits that Merry certainly has as a member of the Straw Hat pirates. Because she has ram horns, rams can apply as well, as they symbolize fearlessness - when it comes to helping her friends, Merry can be quite the {{Determinator}}
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: Merry's [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Klabautermann Klabautermann]], a ghostly manifestation of a ship's spirit that is born out of its crew's love for it. Unfortunately, a Klabautermann being seen by its crew is a sign that [[spoiler:their ship will soon meet its doom]]; Merry's gets seen in the midde of the Skypeia Arc, and true to form, [[spoiler:she is immobilized due to accumulated, ''terminal'' damage to her keel]] once the Straw Hats reached Water 7 at the beginning of the Enies Lobby Arc, and by the end of the arc [[spoiler:she is finally laid to rest]].
* BigDamnHeroes: She comes all the way from Water 7 to aid the Straw Hats and co. in Enies Lobby, her timely surprise appearance allowing them to escape certain doom at the hands of the Buster Call fleet that had finally cornered them.
* CoolBoat: Merry is the Straw Hats' main form of transportation from Syrup Island until Water 7.
* ADayInTheLimeLight: Merry gets her own TV Special, the ''Episode of Merry: The Tale of One More Friend''.
* {{Determinator}}: Water 7's dreaded Aqua Laguna and a violent rainstorm didn't stop her from coming to her crew's rescue in Enies Lobby [[spoiler:despite her physical form being barely held together by Iceburg's temporary fixes]]. The Buster Call fleet comprised of the Marines' most immense and armed-to-the-teeth battleships didn't even make her flinch (not that they managed to hit her in the first place). The only thing that did stop her was [[spoiler:her keel (the ship equivalent of the human body's spine) finally giving in to all the damage it sustained over the past several arcs, causing the ship to essentially break ''in half'']]. Even then, said damage didn't appear to have any effect on Merry until after the Straw Hats had another ship to carry them back to land, suggesting Merry was keeping herself seaworthy through nothing but sheer force of will.
* FinalSpeech: She delivers one to the Straw Hats in order to assure them that [[spoiler:she neither blames them for her death nor has any regrets, as she had been truly happy throughout the time she was with them]].
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:Despite being technically a ship with a drawn smile, the happy way she talks to the Straw Hats during her VikingFuneral can make the scene be interpreted as a beloved crew member dying with no regrets, with a smile on her face]].
* IRegretNothing: [[spoiler:She truly doesn't regret sailing with the Straw Hats despite the tremendous crap she is subjected to as a by-product of their adventures, and tells them as much during her VikingFuneral. Her only regret, according to her, was not surviving long enough to carry her friends through more adventures]].
* MadeOfGood: Franky explains that a ship's Klabautermann is born out of a crew's love for their ship, [[spoiler:though it only truly manifests when it's soon to be doomed]].
* OhCrap: Not even she was immune to this during the end of the Skypeia arc, when the Straw Hats returned to the Blue Sea... by being dropped 30,000 feet from the White Sea. Everyone's eyeballs popped out, including hers!
* OutOfFocus: In spite of her importance, she ultimately fades into the background as the majority of a given arc will generally take place on the particular island said arc is centered on where Merry can't follow for obvious reasons, particularly since the series tends to focus on intense personal battles between powerful individual people, rather than the ship-to-ship combat of actual real-life naval warfare.
* PerpetualSmiler: Well, if she had a face, it would have been smiling. As it is, we have to settle for her figurehead's drawn smile.
* RealityEnsues: After all the crap Merry went through (including blasting up and then falling down 30,000 feet), she was bound to suffer irreparable damage.
* RuleOfSymbolism: The damage done to her keel is drawn and shaded much like wounds would be on a person.
* SapientShip: Implied at first, but then shown explicitly when she sails to Enies Lobby without a crew.
* TearsFromAStone: Technically, it was a splash from a wave, but it happened during the climax of the fight between [[spoiler:Luffy and Usopp,]] as a way to underline the tragedy the crew was facing.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Merry is the only crew-member that never complains or causes trouble and is self-sacrificing and conscientious to a fault, so of course [[spoiler: she's the crew member who dies.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: The motivation for the feats described in her BigDamnHeroes and {{Determinator}} entries.
* VikingFuneral: She is given this after she is finally [[spoiler:broken irreparably following her BigDamnHeroes feat]].
* WildTake: Yes, even a pirate ship in the ''One Piece'' world can do this. She was sentient enough to realize that the only way to leave Skypeia is going through a 30, 000 drop, and have an [[OhCrap appropriate reaction]] to this discovery.
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: [[spoiler:Her cracked keel. The Galley-la shipwrights, the best in the One Piece world, tell the Straw Hats that it would be better to get a new ship. They could make a new keel for ''Merry'', sure, but it wouldn't be the same, and nobody would feel that more than the Straw Hats. This eventually leads to Merry herself being rendered beyond repair and dying from her injuries]].
