The cast of ''VideoGame/NiNoKuni''. Be wary of spoilers.

!!Tropes related to Oliver, Esther, Swaine, and Marcassin:
* TheBeastmaster: Everyone can fight with their familiars, but special mention goes to Esther, who is the only one that can tame them.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Oliver and Esther, barely in their teens, being friends with the much older Swaine, and to a lessen extent, to Marcassin.

->Voiced by: Adam Wilson

A boy from the peaceful town of Motorville. Oliver led a simple life until he mischievously snuck out at night to test his car with his friend, which in turn resulted in him falling into the river due to the White Witch's intervention. His mother luckily rescued him, but she suffered a heart attack right after.

Days later, Oliver meets Mr. Drippy after a SwissArmyTears unseals him. He then tells Oliver about the truth regarding his mother, showing him an opportunity to save her by going to another world. Hesitant at first, Oliver takes on the adventure.

* ADarkerMe: [[spoiler:Shadar]]
* AChildShallLeadThem: So says the other world's prophecy.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: Acts pretty mature for someone who is 13.
* {{Badass}}: The Pure Hearted One destined to save the other world from a powerful evil folks.
* BadassAdorable: And well-mannered to boot!
* BadassCape: After he changes out of his Motorville attire early in the game. Some of the [=NPCs=] in Motorville question him about it later.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:When he snaps out of his HeroicBSOD, Oliver saves Esther and Swaine from being nearly killed by Vileheart with [[LightEmUp Mornstar]].]]
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:When Shadar reveals the truth about his mother, he goes into HeroicBSOD mode and spends several days in bed without waking up (though he's put in an AngstComa for grabbing the sphere holding her "soul"). He reveals to Pea that he feels that his journey was all for nothing since his mother is well and truly dead. It takes a CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming montage to get him back on his feet.]]
* {{Catchphrase}}: Neato! and Jeepers!
* ChildMage: Though not the only one in the game.
* TheChosenOne: The "Pure-Hearted One."
* ElementalPowers: Over the course of the game, he gains [[PlayingWithFire Fireball and Burning Heart,]] the latter being his LimitBreak, [[AnIcePerson Frostbite]], [[ShockAndAwe Thunderstorm]], [[LightEmUp Arrow of Light, Mornstar and Astra]], [[CastingAShadow Evenstar]], and [[RandomEffectSpell the Fortune's Fool spell, which can aid your party in a variety of ways, or absolutely fail]].
* FarmBoy: At least in nature until Drippy came into the picture.
* FlyingBroomStick: [[spoiler:In the ending, he's seen flying around Motorville with one while looking down at all his friends doing their daily routines.]]
* TheHeart: [[spoiler: Turns out to be his biggest strength for the obstacles he face. It also unlocks the full potential of Mornstar and the spell itself]].
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Is able to heal the brokenhearted, among other things. His caring nature also earns him many allies.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:After finding out that his mom and Alicia were one and the same. As a result, [[HeroicRROD he spends the next several days in a coma.]] Esther and Swaine beat themselves up over it.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Upon confronting Shadar, he learns that they are soulmates, which means killing Shadar will kill him too. Oliver decides to go through it anyway... until it's subverted by Shadar himself, who severs the connection between their souls so Oliver can go on living.]]
* InstantExpert: [[spoiler:No wonder his [[ActionMom talent in magic]] is incredibly innate...]]
* KidHero: A polite and mild-mannered one.
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Adam Wilson's attempts at a Middle American accent are rather inconsistent to say the least. This does make a bit of sense, though, considering Oliver is the son of a[[spoiler:n apparently]] British woman but lived his whole life in America.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: As far as magic is concerned, anyway.
* PlayingWithFire: One of his first spells, as well as his [[LimitBreak Miracle Move]] Burning Heart.
* {{Reincarnation}}: [[spoiler:As Shadar's Soul-Mate, it's implied he has been reincarnated repeatedly due to the latter's {{Immortality}}. He doesn't remember anything of it, though.]]
* RefusalOfTheCall: He said no after everything was explained to him... until he showed Drippy who his mother was.
* SkilledButNaive: Even Drippy gets annoyed with just how simple-minded Oliver can be, but only in the early game. Near the end of the game, it's clear that he gained a lot of wisdom [[spoiler: and at the game's end, resolves to no longer fret over his mother's death and get on with his life.]]
* SquishyWizard: Starts out as this but eventually becomes a JackOfAllStats.
* SummonMagic: [[spoiler:After bringing back the Mornstar to its full power, he can [[JustForPun Unleash]] this.]]
* SwissArmyTears: What leads him to unseal Drippy from his doll form.
* TheWatson: In the early parts of the game, Drippy has to tell him everything many times, it drives the fairy crazy. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] that Oliver is new to the other world.
* TooDumbToLive: It ''did'' work, but who in their right mind proposes to go up a volcano to stop it from erupting without informing any of the nearby townspeople?

!!Drippy (シズク Shizuku)
->Voiced by: Steffan Rhodri

A fairy from another world who was turned into a doll, which ended up in Oliver's hands by his mother. He's happy to guide Oliver around in order for him to defeat Shadar and bring peace.

* BritishAccents: He's voiced with a feisty Welsh accent.
** However, in the Japanese version of the game, he's given a KansaiRegionalAccent
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: His only use for battles is to support you by casting Tidy Tears (a healing spell that also gives you a defense boost). In cutscenes? Aside from the PintsizedPowerhouse entry, he can also ''catch up to a boat while running at full speed on top of water'' and carries heavy stuff for you.
* DeadpanSnarker: The snarkiest one in the game. He's often the one bluntly pointing out others' silliness, and is usually the first to voice his disapproval over something he doesn't understand.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: He introduces himself as the "Lord... High Lord of the fairies", in what seemed to be an attempt to make his regular title sound better. From then on, he ''always'' refers to himself as "Lord High Lord".
* DemotedToExtra: Drippy used to be a party member that would fight alongside you in ''Jet-black Mage''. In ''White Witch'', he's your guide and offers advice on boss fights for a "Chance!" moment, and can randomly use his Tidy Tears skill during battle.
* DynamicEntry: They could have just gone through the backdoor from the Fairy Mother's entrance, but instead he opts to get shot out of a cannon ''straight into her mouth''.
* ExpositionFairy: He's your source of info, no matter how much Oliver annoys him for his lack of knowledge.
* FunetikAksent : It's strong enough the subtitles transcribe "Your" as "Youer" and "Our" as "Ouer", as well as other words.
* GoshDangItToHeck: He says "flipping" a lot, along with "heck" and "knickers".
* MotorMouth: Probably a weird case in the English version of the game, but he talks a little bit too fast. No wonder why Oliver is confused many times.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Though he doesn't fight alongside you (in the PS3 version), he did ''throw a boss' shield bigger than he is ten times over''.
* PluckyComicRelief: Fittingly. Not only does he hail from a land where comedy is king, but he's considered a legendary comedian there.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: If his title is more than a comedic affectation.
* SealedGoodInACan: He was turned into a doll by Shadar and somehow ended up in Motorville. Oliver ended up freeing him from his BalefulPolymorph early in the game.
* VerbalTic: Tidy! He also speaks with an incredibly [[{{UsefulNotes/Wales}} Welsh]] accent and mannerisms.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Apparently has a fear of "slimy things", like snakes and frogs.

!!Esther (マル Maru)
->Voiced by: Lauren Mote

Daughter of the sage Rashaad of the other world and Myrtle's soul mate, she was robbed of a piece of her heart until Oliver mended Myrtle's family struggle. As thanks, she accompanies Oliver in his journey to defeat Shadar. Though she wishes to have some kind of good personal reason other than helping Oliver out...

* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: [[spoiler:Very briefly playable when Oliver's in his coma.]]
* BareYourMidriff: Thanks to her outfit.
* [[BedlahBabe Bedlah Kid]]: She's the only one dressed like this in her kingdom and her main outfit is explicitly stated to aid in dancing.
* TheChick: To drive the point home, she's extremely enamored with romance, such as the story of the Frog Prince, [[spoiler:or {{squee}}ing over the fact that the fearsome Sky Pirate Kublai is in love with his queen.]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings: From familiars to other fauna, this is what makes her the [[TheBeastmaster tamer]] of the group.
* GirlyRun: Except during battle, oddly enough.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Eagerly and immediately after Oliver cures her from Shadar's brokenhearted spell.
* MusicMagic: Aside from using her harp to tame familiars, she also uses it to buff and heal allies and occasionally damage foes with a magical soundwave.
* OddCouple: With Swaine. Most of their humor revolves around how different the two are.
* PluckyGirl: A norm for StudioGhibli's works.
* [[SkirtOverSlacks Skirt Over]] [[Disney/{{Aladdin}} Jasmine Pants]]: Mostly to lessen the amount of skin her [[BedlahBabe normal clothes]] show. Again, she's the only one wearing this type of fashion in the game.
* StatusBuff: Her Songs can enhance the party's abilities.
* SupportPartyMember: She's more useful as the buffer and healer than as a combatant; she hardly even gets any attack spells. She's better off relying on her familiars for actual combat.
* WhiteMage: Gains some nice healing spells fairly early on, much sooner than Oliver.

!!Swaine/[[spoiler:Gascon]] (ジャイロ Jairo)
->Voiced by: Louis Tamone

A traveling thief who causes a few problems for Oliver until he joins his side. For some reason, he's concerned about reaching Hamelin and having a talk with the sage... He's in a personal turmoil about his younger brother not being himself. After a few hurdles, the two finally make peace once more.

* AntiHero: He starts off as a bit of a jerk, but once Esther and Oliver really get to know him, Swaine becomes very friendly, if a bit snarky.
* BadassNormal: He has little to no magic to speak of, aside from using familiars, with all of his MP moves using his [[CoolGun "Trickshots"]] and has the lowest MP amount of the group.
* BigBrotherInstinct: [[spoiler:To Marcassin, his younger brother.]]
* BigNo: [[spoiler:When he sees his father dying fifteen years in the past, only in person this time. Ouch...]]
* ButtMonkey: Mostly due to Esther chiding at his snark.
* CatSmile: Can be noticed at certain camera angles.
* DeadpanSnarker: Only slightly less than Drippy.
* GrapplingHookPistol: Grappling-Hook ''Lockpick'' Pistol, [[CoolGun actually.]]
* ImpossibleThief: Taken UpToEleven with his [[LimitBreak Miracle Move]] that allows him to ''steal the rarest item from any enemy 100% of the time''.
* TheGunslinger: Thus making him the only party member who can attack at range with his regular attack.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Gets called out as one by Esther for [[spoiler: chastising Pea about abandoning her kingdom. She points out that ''he's'' not exactly one to comment.]] "Ouch..."
* KingIncognito: [[spoiler:It becomes obvious once the party reaches Hamelin that Swaine used to be royalty. It takes the rest of the party longer to figure it out though. This is also PlayedForLaughs when Swaine reveals this info to them... ''during the last arc of the game'', at which point they've long since figured it out.]]
* LoveableRogue: Probably the friendliest (if snarky) thief you'll ever meet.
* MeaningfulName: [[PunnyName Swaine]] seems similar enough to [[AnimalStereotypes "Swine"]] to count as foreshadowing his connection to the Pig-based Hamelin. [[spoiler: Eespecially since the other members of royalty you've met have pun based names, though since it isn't his birth name it might be more of a MeaningfulRename instead. His real name, Gascon, on the other hand can refer to being a boastful person or braggart, fitting his [[RoyalBrat personality]] when he was younger.]]
* MuggleBornOfMages: [[spoiler:This is the main reason Gascon became Swaine, since the emperor of Hamelin also ''has'' to be a great sage Marcassin would end up getting the throne regardless of what he did and also caused him to believe that he was his father's [[TheUnfavorite unfavorite]] so he left home to find his own path.]]
* TheNthDoctor: [[spoiler:This is the present-day Gascon. It's incredible what a life of poverty away from your castle can do to you.]]
* OddCouple: With Esther. Most of their comedy comes from how different the two are.
* RichesToRags: [[spoiler:Purposely left his kingdom as a teen in order to find a purpose. To say that his appearance changed greatly due to this is an understatement.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: [[spoiler:He attempted to help Marcassin become a sage when they were younger, but resolved to find his own purpose and help out in his own way during that time. Later in life, he ends up helping Oliver save the world. Twice.]]
* TheSmartGuy: At least in street savvy.
* VideoGameStealing: Despite firearms being relatively rare in the setting, he steals using a type of gun specifically made for thieves that can steal from long distances thanks to the retractable claw attached to the gun.
* WarriorPrince: [[spoiler:Well, he's already renounced it but it still counts.]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Is just as reluctant to explore the Vault of Tears (home to a dangerous snake king) as Drippy is.
* WellDoneSonGuy: [[spoiler:"I just wanted to make you proud..."]]
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Shadar kills the Emperor while they were off getting Mornstar.]]
* YoungerThanTheyLook: No older than thirty, but a life of thieving and poverty on the streets means he looks haggard and older.

!!Marcassin (ラース Lars)
->Voiced by: Iain McKee

The prince and Great Sage of Hamelin. Marcassin is at a complete loss due to his heart being deprived of its belief. Oliver and company aid him to recover his lost belief, and from there, he aids them in their adventure.

* AdorablyPrecociousChild: [[spoiler:When you meet him fifteen years ago in the past.]]
* BadassAdorable: [[spoiler:As a child sage-in-training. He's powerful enough to defeat the guardian of the Mornstar in one shot.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler: Drops from the sky and teleports Oliver and the gang away when the residents of Ding Dong Dell turn into monsters from the White Witch's manna]].
* {{Bishonen}}: Is repeatedly stated to be a handsome man, especially by Queen Lowlah.
* ChildProdigy: [[spoiler:His sage magic was very developed when he was younger. It's just that he feigned being a novice just that he could stay close to Gascon to avoid either of them to ascend the throne.]]
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: In cutscenes, he's great and everything. [[spoiler:As a playable character, he's basically an inferior version of Oliver and doesn't fulfill a specified role that's useful to the party like the others do.]]
* DudeLooksLikeALady: To a large degree. It's probably just the style of Studio Ghibli, but he looks even ''more'' feminine in his animated introductory scene.
* LateCharacterSyndrome: [[spoiler:He joins in during the last portion of the game when everyone discovers that there was a BiggerBad behind Shadar. Unfortunately, because of this, Marcassin ends up being only used during the last few, relatively small final dungeons, and the post-game. Not only does he join at a low level (depending on how extensively the player grinded the others), Marcassin turns out to be an inferior Oliver in gameplay, only surpassing Oliver's physical attack stat, which is useless for a wizard character. His spells aren't much better; they have a shorter cooldown timer than Oliver's, but they're also the ''same'' as Oliver's, barring the story specific ones that only Oliver can use, meaning Marcassin lacks the most powerful spells in the game. Worse still, since the other three party members already have roles (Esther for taming, Swaine for stealing), and [[CantDropTheHero you can't get rid of Oliver]], Marcassin's usefulness drops almost to nil.]]
* [[BigBrotherInstinct Little Brother Instict]]: [[spoiler: Despite being just a child, he was still protective of his older brother Gascon, to the point of wanting to hide his magical power so that his brother would inherit the throne instead of him.]]
* MeaningfulName: His name is a little used word for a young wild boar, fitting as he is the young [[RedBaron Porcine Prince]] of [[FullBoarAction Hamelin]]. It may also refer to the obscure FairyTale "Prince Marcassin", which is about a prince who is cursed with a boar's head.
* PromotedToPlayable: [[spoiler:He's the fourth party member added to ''Wrath of the White Witch''.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Once he recovers from his brokenheartedness, he does everything he can to help Oliver and the party, as well as his own people. [[spoiler: This is especially true after he joins the party.]]
* SixthRanger: [[spoiler:Unfortunately, he comes in so late and has no real use to the party (aside from being able to better utilize specific genuses of familiars that the others can't), that he's pretty much useless.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Shadar is the cause why he doesn't have him anymore.]]

->Voiced by: Lily Burgering

A mysterious girl whom only Oliver can see and speak too. She appears occasionally to warn him and give him assistance on his journey.

* BuffySpeak: Mostly due to her being a child younger than even Oliver.
* CheerfulChild: She's generally always happy, but she has a few moments where she's really upset, [[spoiler:such as when the manna starts falling in the other world. She's so distressed that she just cries and cries until Oliver calms her down.]]
* EnemyWithout: [[spoiler:Inverted (or PlayedStraight if you're looking from the White Witch's perspective). Pea is the goodness of Cassiopeia, released right before Cassiopeia's heart was overtaken by loneliness and despair. Pea was then taken to Motorville by Gallus, in an attempt to help Cassiopeia become free from her own darkness.]]
* GenkiGirl: [[spoiler:More pronounced after she comes to the other world, where she acts far more child-like than she ever did before.]]
* GuestStarPartyMember: [[spoiler:Well, since she's a part of Cassiopeia during the final battle, it counts. Also, she does travel with the party for a substantial amount of time, but doesn't fight.]]
* MysteriousWaif: So mysterious that who Pea is isn't revealed until the end of the game.
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:She looks about as old as Oliver, but according to the back story, she's really ten thousand years old!]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: [[spoiler:It's revealed that she's actually a queen late in the game.]]
* ThePollyanna: More so than Oliver even!
* TokenMiniMoe: A given considering she's the youngest character to travel with Oliver and company.

[[folder: Antagonists]]

!!White Witch/[[spoiler:Cassiopeia]] (白き聖灰の女王 Shiroki seihai no jōu)
->Voiced by: Jennifer Bryden

The titular villain who harbors great hatred towards Oliver due to him being the world's "Savior", and will do everything in her power to kill him.

* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:At the end of the game, she is horrified by all the evil acts she's done to the other world, and promises to make amends to everyone.]]
* BigBad: Gives orders to Shadar, and is responsible for the plot being set in motion to begin with via the death of Allie.
* CastingAShadow: Her Falling Star spell, as well as Nightshade.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: [[spoiler:A very dark, unfunny variant. She spends most of the game talking to what turn out to figments of her imagination made real by her magic. Turns out to be a subversion, she's actually aware the things she's talking, outside of Shadar, aren't real, but spending hundreds of years alone took such a toll on her that she'll settle for having nearly anybody around as long she isn't alone.]]
* DarkIsEvil: A lot of her abilities seem to be dark-based, in a bit of contrast.
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler: She uses those same dark-based attacks to help you fight the final boss.]]
* GuestStarPartyMember: [[spoiler:She will join you for the final boss battle.]]
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: [[spoiler:Cassiopeia essentially went insane from loneliness and grief, becoming the White Witch after she cast off whatever goodness she had left in her.]]
* LightIsGood: [[spoiler: Her true form as Cassiopeia.]]
* LightIsNotGood: [[spoiler:Especially not after it goes mad from despair.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:After Pea joins back with her she realize the error of her ways.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:When she reverts back to her true self, she's still as young as she was ten thousand years ago.]]
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:During the final battle, she turns into a leopard-type creature.]]
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Never moves from her throne until she's confronted by Oliver at the end of the game.
* PhysicalGod: She's easily the strongest person in the setting. Considering she's immortal, can snap her fingers and affect things from across dimensions, [[spoiler: cause worldwide zombie apocalypses singlehandedly in mere seconds and give figments of her imagination life and godlike power of their own without even intending it,]] it may not be too much of a stretch to call her this. Justified in that [[spoiler:she's the Wizard King's daughter]].
* RedOniBlueOni: Her clothes change color depending on her emotion: Red for anger and Blue for calmness.
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:Apus, the Zodiarch council, even Pea, are all figments of her imagination made real.]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: A given considering she and her council refer to themselves are arbiters of the world's fate. [[spoiler:In truth, she's actually Cassiopeia, who is indeed over ten thousand years old.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: [[spoiler:With terrible results on her part.]]
* SequentialBoss: [[spoiler:Technically, two forms out of three are her.]]
* SympathyForTheDevil: [[spoiler:All of the misery in the game can be traced back to her, and she was personally responsible for the death of Allie. But after the Manna catastrophe that she personally unleashed left her all alone, it's hard not to feel bad for her. It gets even harder when she ''[[TearJerker breaks down crying]]'' after her OneWingedAngel form is defeated, and the face under her mask wears a broken, utterly helpless expression. It's easily one of the most pathetic, heartwrenching sights in the game, considering what she was like during 90 percent of the story.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: Everyone doesn't realize she exists until about 90% a way through the main plot, as she sends Shadar to do all of her dirty work, and he never mentions her.
* UnmovingPlaid: Her cloak has [[StarSpangledSpandex the entire galaxy!]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: [[spoiler:Believes that the world should be destroyed because its flawed.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:When the party reveals that she can't just remake the world just because she doesn't like it, she goes berserk. After she is defeated in her OneWingedAngel form, she loses all composure and collapses into a sobbing wreck.]]
* VoiceOfTheLegion: It honestly makes her fairly creepy.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler: Was in fact daughter of the Wizard King, and after his death became the queen of Nazcaa at a very young age and spent most of it sheltered while the corrupt Zodiarch council run the kingdom. When she got older and saw the state of her kingdom, she created the spell of manna to try and save Nazcaa, but it ended up turning everyone but her into monsters that murdered each other, destroying Nazcaa and leaving her all alone. She now seeks to destroy the world and make it anew. All the many, many tragedies in her life have driven her into believing that the world isn't fixable and should be remade into something that wouldn't have the cataclysm of Nazcaa happen again.]]
* YinYangBomb: Wields both dark and light magic.

!!Shadar/[[spoiler:Lucien]] (ジャボー Jabō/[[spoiler:Natius]])
->Voiced by: Brian Protheroe [[spoiler: and Oliver Mason (as Lucien)]]

The Dark Djinn, who was dubbed "Executor", and charged with bringing destruction towards the other world by the White Witch.

* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:In his final moments, its revealed that Shadar wanted to bring peace to the world, knows that many of his actions are wrong but feels he must do commit, and it's possible that he was doing it while he was the Dark Djinn. Alicia says that the other world was a much better place while Shadar was in power than how it was when she was a child.]]
* BadassBaritone: Fittingly, for someone who is called "The Executor".
* ClimaxBoss: In ''Wrath of the White Witch'', thanks to the eponymous Witch being the real final boss.
* CynicismCatalyst: [[spoiler:One you get to see in flashback after his defeat. Put simply, he used to be a WideEyedIdealist, until he was forced to take part in a horrifying war. He refused to kill innocent civilians and helped a young girl (who turned out to be Alicia) escape, and his superiors had ''his entire hometown burned'' as punishment. Needless to say he crossed the DespairEventHorizon after that.]]
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: To make sure no one stands up against him, such as the standard JRPG LaResistance, he steals pieces of the hearts before they can even form a resistance, as well as cutting off the link to his soulmate so that ''that'' could't be used against him (if a soulmate dies, the person linked to the soulmate also dies). He also ''destroys'' the [[InfinityPlusOneSword Infinity Plus One Wand]] capable of defeating him at the first chance he gets. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for him, the Witch had an EnigmaticMinion who could TimeTravel.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:In the DS version, he was the actual final boss. However, the game continues in the PS3 version to reveal himself as TheDragon towards the White Witch.]]
* TheDragon: Of the White Witch.
* TheDreaded: By everyone in the other world.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:By refusing to fight in a ruthless conflict, and for letting the daughter of a great sage escape, he gets his hometown razed.]]
* DoomedHometown: [[spoiler:Unlike examples of this trope, his ''own superiors'' did this to him as a ''punishment!'' All for letting an innocent child live.]]
* ElementalPowers: Uses all the elements Oliver can, sans light. Just about all of them are dark influenced though. [[spoiler: Interestingly, his fire spell looks somewhat similar to Oliver's Burning Heart, only blue.]]
* EvilCounterpart: To [[spoiler: Oliver]]. Literally. His [[CastingAShadow Evenstar]] spell to Oliver's [[LightEmUp Mornstar]]. [[spoiler: Which Oliver himself can use after defeating him.]]
* EvilCripple: Downplayed: he leans very heavily on a cane, his posture is stooped, and he gives off an air of being physically decrepit.
* EvilMakesYouUgly: [[spoiler:He looked like a normal teenager in the past, but when you finally see him unhooded in the present his face is aged and withered. Once he reunites with Alicia's spirit, who convinces him there's still some good in him, he returns to his younger look.]]
* EvilRedhead: [[spoiler:Though he wasn't always evil...]]
* EvilSorcerer: Powerful enough to ''break'' hearts, allowing his reign to continue with almost no resistance.
* EvilSoundsDeep: [[spoiler:Though we never hear how he sounds after he reunites with Alicia, he sounded like a teenage young man in his flashback.]]
* TheFaceless: His face is completely blacked out and cannot be seen. [[spoiler: At least until his last moments.]]
* FallenHero: [[spoiler:Wanted to be one of the greatest wizards in the world. Fell into despair after his idealist nature was crushed under the cruel heel of reality.]]
* FromNobodyToNightmare: [[spoiler:No one had even heard about Shadar until he started ruining peoples' lives with his magic.]]
* GenreBlind: Notice the DangerouslyGenreSavvy entry? So why does he make so many glaring mistakes, like not enlisting the help of the Zodiarchs, or showing up to taunt Oliver before leaving, rather than killing him on the spot? [[spoiler: Because it's all part of the plan. Because Oliver will simply be reincarnated if killed, to be defeated, his spirit must be broken, and that calls for a DespairGambit: string Oliver along, tempting him with [[HopeSpot the Soulsnare]], have him jump through hoops and brave countless dangers...before revealing that it was AllForNothing.]]
* {{Immortality}}: [[spoiler: On the plus side, this means his Soul Mate in the Otherworld is constantly reincarnated, which Alicia uses as the basis of her plan.]]
* IntergenerationalFriendship: [[spoiler:A very, [[MindScrew VERY]] weird case with Alicia. When they first met she was a child, but as an adult she ends up traveling forward in time and becoming the mother of his AlternateSelf. She reunites with him in child form after his defeat.]]
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: [[spoiler:He was a WideEyedIdealist that took part in a heinous war and because he refused to fight, lost everything dear to him. Is it any wonder he became the Dark Djinn?]]
* MyRevengeIsMercy: [[spoiler:When Oliver defeats him, he decides to sever the connection that exists between the two of them so Oliver will not die with him.]]
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:He says this when he reveals to Oliver that they're soulmates, but it's not meant literally. It refers to the fact that thanks to Shadar causing his soulmate to be constantly reborn by shattering their connection to each other, Alicia happened to use his soulmate's lost soul to give birth to Oliver, indirectly making Shadar his father.]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Executor/The Dark Djinn.
* OneWingedAngel: His final phase has him turn ''into'' a Dark Djinn.
* SequentialBoss: In a game with relatively few of them. He has ''three'' phases!
* StartOfDarkness: After his defeat, we're given his backstory. It... isn't pretty.
* TeleportSpam: He has a habit of teleporting out of the way whenever you get close to him when you fight him, much like the Nightmares before him.
* TrapMaster: His "Circles of Hell" attack works like this. [[TooDumbToLive Unfortunately, your allies have an annoying habit of stepping on them.]]
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:Platonic example, with Alicia.]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: [[spoiler:Wanted to rid the world of war. Ironically through becoming TheDreaded, he pretty much succeeded. An interesting case of a villain invoking this trope without really meaning to.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:Alicia suggests he may have been one all along without even realizing it.]]
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: '''''VERY''''' much so. The guy is a faceless, DangerouslyGenreSavvy EvilSorceror with ''unimaginable'' power, with MindRape as his go-to weapon of choice.
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: A kinda sorta drudic-ish one.

!!The Zodiarchs

A council of twelve who serve the White Witch.

* BiggerBad: [[spoiler: To the White Witch,]]
* EasternZodiac: Each wears a mask of one of the 12 animals.
* EnemyWithout: [[spoiler:After Cassiopeia's evil intentions disappeared, they were formed from the remnants of it. [[FridgeBrilliance She is the Wizard King's daughter and a powerful sorceress capable of forming the Zodiarch council through ''sheer imagination''.]] On a deeper level (explained late in the post-game), they're essentially the Council of Twelve from Cassiopeia's past, the ones who drove the kingdom into ruin by taking advantage of the girl after her father's death (which they secretly caused). Their evil was apparently ''so'' pronounced, that they ended up leaving a mark on Cassiopeia's psyche, and they were able to be "reborn" as the Witch's Zodiarchs.]]
* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:The real evil behind it all.]]
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: [[spoiler:They appear flat out of nowhere for the final battle.]]
* TheFaceless: They all look the same, and if that wasn't enough, they all wear masks. They can be told apart on some level, as the masks are of different Zodiac animals.
* StaffOfAuthority: They all have one, each themed after their Zodiac animal.
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler:They turn on the White Witch at the end, when she lets go of her resentment and hatred.]]
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Only when they speak in unison [[spoiler:and as the final boss]], otherwise it's just their voices echoing through their masks.
* WalkingSpoiler

!!Gallus (Shazar)
->Voiced by: Christopher Godwin

Tenth member of the Council of Twelve, he faithfully serves the White Which... or does he? In the DS version he was just a BonusBoss, but the PS3 version expanded his role considerably...

* AffectionateNickname: Pea calls him "Doodle-Doo", thanks to his Zodiac animal being the Rooster. [[spoiler: Becomes hilarious when you find you ''he's her father''.]]
* AnimalMotifs: He's the Rooster of the Chinese Zodiac.
* BarrierChangeBoss: He used [[ElementalPowers different attacks]] depending on what barrier he has up.
* BonusBoss: In the DS version. The PS3 version gave him a more prominent role in the main story... [[spoiler: and the fight with him is mandatory this time. But don't worry, he's been heavily [[{{Nerf}} Nerfed.]]]]
* MeaningfulName: Gallus means rooster in Latin.
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler:Heroic version. Shadar destroyed Mornstar in the present, but Gallus was able to send the heroes back in time to retrieve it in the past. Then he turns out to be both the spirit of Cassiopeia's father, and hence the Wizard King himself, as well as the spirit of the [[InfinityPlusOneSword Infinity Plus One Wand]] Astra. He's also the reason Oliver met Pea, making him the catalyst of most events in the game.]]
* DragonWithAnAgenda: To the White Witch. [[spoiler: His agenda being to ''[[SaveTheVillain save her.]]'']]
* EnigmaticMinion: No one knows what the heck he's doing, not Oliver and company, not Shadar, [[spoiler:not even the White Witch and her council.]]
* GoodAllAlong: [[spoiler:To be expected considering he's the spirit of Cassiopeia's father.]]
* LivingWeapon: [[spoiler:Of the [[InfinityPlusOneSword Infinity Plus One Wand]], Astra.]]
* OnlyTheWorthyMayPass: The reason he fights Oliver. Which means his Barrier Change is actually him [[InvokedTrope Invoking]] FinalExamBoss.
* ReverseMole: [[spoiler:Is the one that aides Oliver the most. Without his help, Oliver wouldn't have been able to ever best Shadar, let alone the White Witch.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: [[spoiler:Yes, even though he's ''dead!'']]
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler:Justified. She's his ''daughter''.]]
* SpiritAdvisor: [[spoiler:Of the StealthMentor variety.]]
* TheStarscream: Set up as one. [[spoiler: He's actually a ReverseMole.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Well duh.

[[folder:Supporting Characters]]

->Voiced by: Jo Wyatt

Oliver's mother. A kind woman who cares deeply for her child. She loses her life after saving Oliver's in a tragic accident. At the insistence of Drippy, Oliver goes on a quest to save her.

* ActionMom: Not only did she rush to Oliver's aid (at the expense of her own health and well-being... and life), but [[spoiler:in actuality, she is the Great Sage Alicia. As a small girl native to the Other World, she was saved by Shadar before he became evil. When he did, she spent years to become a sage, traveled back (forward?) in time, crossed dimensions to Earth and absorbed Shadar's other self's soul that he had cast off (Oliver) and gave birth to him as part of a plan to save Shadar.]]
* BritishAccents: Seems a bit incongruous [[EverytownAmerica given the setting]], but not all that unlikely given the historical context of the 1950s. Oliver's about the right age to have been conceived at the end of WorldWarII, when many American GIs got married and brought their wives home with them from overseas. [[spoiler:Of course, she's actually from a medieval fairytale world rather than Britain, but being an English war bride does make a good cover story]].
* HeroicSacrifice: Saves Oliver from drowning in the river, but suffers a heart attack afterwards and dies in the hospital.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Indeed, Oliver's quest to save her turns out to be in vain. Poor lad...]]
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler:Of her own volition, more or less. She had to leave her home world in order to help raise Oliver, which meant that she had to give up her life in that world.]]
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler:And she pulls one hell of a plan to do so: going forward in time and ''becoming the mother of his'' ''AlternateSelf''!]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Yeah, there's more to Allie than meets the eye.

!!King Tom XIV
->Voiced by: Lewis Macleod

The "Meowjesty" of Ding Dong Dell. He assists Oliver in his journey after restoring a piece of heart he was missing, giving Oliver his first real wand (as in, one that's not a stick).

* AdiposeRex: Considering his soulmate is a fat cat, this is probably not that much of a surprise.
* AnimalJingoism: His ArchEnemy is a rodent king.
* CatsAreMean: Completely [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]. [[spoiler: But played straight when affected by manna.]]
* CoolCat: His subjects seem to like him.
* FaceMonsterTurn: [[spoiler:Thankfully it was reversable.]]
* MegaNeko: A human-sized cat. [[spoiler:Turns UpToEleven due to the manna infliction.]]
* NeatFreak: Near the end of the game, he spends a lot of time grooming himself before presenting himself to the town's festival.
* [[PoisonousPerson Poisonous Feline]]: [[spoiler:His claw swipes can poison you during his boss fight.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Helps Oliver and company breach the White Witch's Ivory Tower.
* RoyalWe: Or rather, "Royal One".
* StockAnimalName: Tom. As in tomcat.
* TurnsRed: [[spoiler:His monster form starts the battle on all-fours and doesn't have much in the way of attacks. Until you deplete his HP and he stands up...]]
* VerbalTic: Like many cat characters, he says words like Purrfect or Purrcisely.

!!Great Sage Rashaad
->Voiced by: Colin MacFarlane

A former Great Sage and father to Esther. He works as a Babana merchant in Al Mamoon and initially refuses to help Oliver stand up against Shadar, but warms up to him after he heals his brokenhearted daughter.

* BadassBaritone: Shared between both him and his soulmate.
* CoolOldGuy: At least once he knows that Esther is freed of her brokenheartedness.
* RetiredBadass: Temporarily. He seems to get back into the Sage business after his daughter's heart is restored.

!!Queen Lowlah
->Voiced by: Rachel Atkins

The "Cowlipha" of Al Mamoon. She favors cheese to the point that when she became brokenhearted, that's all she'd eat (in excess). She assists Oliver by providing him a boat after he cures her of her gluttony.

* AbhorrentAdmirer: Subverted. While she has an obvious crush on Marcassin, giving the heroes his photo, and Drippy finds this fact creepy, we aren't shown how Marcassin himself reacts to her fawning over him when they meet for the first time.
* AchillesHeel: [[spoiler:The 'Burden' spell when she's turned into a monster.]]
* [[AdiposeRex Adipose Regina]]: Supposedly her prodigious size is due to how much she stuffed herself while brokenhearted. We never see her when she's thin, but the Wizard's Companion provides a bust picture of one of her ancestors, who resembled a skinnier version of Lowlah.
* ALoadOfBull: She has bovine horns. She's also the only one in the game that's a cow person.
* BigBeautifulWoman: The CatGirl who runs the inn describes her as beautiful.
* BigEater: Brought on by Shadar taking away her restraint.
* FaceMonsterTurn: [[spoiler:Same deal as Tom.]]
* {{Gainaxing}}: In the in-game cutscenes, she bounces a few times while stumbling to get out of bed after recovering from her broken heart. It happens again later in the game, including an audible sound alongside the effect.
* LargeAndInCharge: She's taller than Oliver's house!
* OurGiantsAreBigger: The largest character in the game aside from ''Shadar's final form''! Nothing anywhere explains why she's like this.
* RoyalWe: Her speech pattern.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Cheese.
* TurnsRed: [[spoiler:Jumps up on her feet in the second phase of her fight and starts dishing out really painful body slams.]]
* VillainousGlutton: She acts this way when heartbroken.

!!Supreme Sage Solomon

A sage who lives within the Temple of Trials. He assists apprentice wizards and runs a competition called the Solosseum.

* BigGuyLittleGuy: Little guy to his servant, Umbopa.
* {{Jerkass}}: He doesn't have many nice things to say towards Oliver and Esther, or anyone in general.
* MeaningfulName: According to some legends King Solomon was said to be able to tame and control Daemons, in the game Sage Solomon gives Ester an item that lets her do the same thing to get more familiars.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He looks about as tall as Oliver, and almost looks around his age. However, he's old enough that he's trained Rashaad, Khulan, Marcassin and Alicia.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Well, we never see him in action, but according to everyone else, he should be pretty powerful. The closest we come to witnessing his power is in [[spoiler:the Solosseum, where he's the final match. Appropriate to the trope, instead of using the biggest, most powerful Nobilia type creatures against you (which are all stronger than normal familiars by their very nature), Solomon just uses gold versions of Oliver, Esther, and Swaine's starter familiars in their base form (so Mite, Drongo, and Hurly respectively). And they're strong enough to kick the ass of a max leveled party of familiars to boot!]]
* [[invoked]]TastesLikeDiabetes: Invoked by Solomon himself. He appears to hate anything "cute" or "sweet", and refers to the hearts that appear over tamable familiars' heads as "disgusting".

!!Great Sage Khulan
->Voiced by: Abigail Thaw

The Great Sage Khulan was once the queen of the Kingdom of Xanadu. After the Kingdom fell to Shadar, she became brokenhearted and proceeded to do the same to the people of Perdida.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: While brokenhearted, she was being manipulated by Shadar, acting as his "representative."
* ItsAllMyFault: Blames herself for the fall of Xanadu. Oliver and Kublai mention that this is not the case.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Once she's cured, she orders Kublai to assist in helping all the world's cities stand up to Shadar's evils.

->Voiced by: Mark Lewis Jones

The King of the Sky Pirates and master of Tengri, a winged Dragon.

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: [[spoiler:He's a former commander of Xanadu's airborne division. Who knew?]]
* BadassBeard: Which simply accentuates his rugged demeanor.
* BadassBoast: He's one of the few (or possibly, the ''only'') people you encounter who isn't afraid of the very mention of Shadar, proclaiming that he'll show him what it means to face a "true adversary."
* CoolAirship: The Iron Wyvern.
* EmotionalBruiser: Oliver takes two parts of his heart over the course of the story.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's probably the only other character aside from Solomon who hardly cares for Oliver's manners, but he loves his land and would do anything to help it and its Queen, [[spoiler:including admitting that he loves Queen Khulan in order to help mend her broken heart.]]
* MeaningfulName: He's named after Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan Dynasty in China. His soulmate in the other world, [[spoiler: Genghis]], is named after the founder of Mongol Empire.
* RedBaron: "King of the Sky Pirates."
* SkyPirate: The leader of the only band of Sky Pirates in the world, thanks to their flying airship and their dragon allies.
* StarCrossedLovers: [[spoiler:With Khulan at first, of the 'commoner loving royalty' type. That is, until she points out that, since her city was destroyed, she's technically not queen anymore...]]

A mysterious, ghostly boy who speaks to Oliver in riddles, and rewards him whenever he can figure them out. The player encounters him in various villages throughout the game.

* BadassBeard: [[spoiler:The older version of him has one.]]
* ChildMage: He claims to be the Sage of Ages and the one who penned the first Wizard's Companion when we first meet him. Drippy doubts him almost immediately (thanks to having never heard of a "Sage of Ages") and thinks that he's just a braggart. [[spoiler:Turns out that he's lost his memory, and ends up being spurred on to regain it after meeting Oliver.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: He lets out a few snarks towards Oliver and Drippy, mostly towards the latter.
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler:He feels that leaving Cassiopeia behind and ignoring her for the sake of revenge against the Council is what started this whole mess, and that being forced to wander the world as a ghost, [[LaserGuidedAmnesia blissfully unaware of his actions in life]] for the longest time, is apt punishment for what he had done. When his sidequest is finally over, he gives Oliver the alchemy plans for a powerful wand and simply asks him to save his queen.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: The fact that Horace can't remember his life from when he was alive distresses him greatly. [[spoiler: It's later revealed that, among other things, he was a student of the Wizard King, took part in the Wizard Wars, was tasked to train Cassiopeia in magic (which is why he wrote the Wizard's Companion, to be a manual of sorts for the future queen), and was part of the Nazcaan Council of Twelve as the original "Gallus". He left the Council when he realized their true intentions, afraid that they were going to snuff him out like they did the Wizard King, leaving behind Cassiopeia, who had tried to deal with their cruelty to her kingdom by invoking the Forbidden Spell, [[MysticalPlague manna]], which she thought would save her kingdom due to her spellbook's lack of details on certain spells.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler: He firmly believes that it was his resignation from the Council of Twelve is what doomed Nazcaa to ruin, and his constant thoughts of revenge for their evils blinded him to his duty to Cassiopeia. Because he had only wrote down spells with their descriptions in the Wizard's Companion he gave, but ''not'' their drawbacks, he inadvertently set Cassiopeia on her StartOfDarkness, who, in a misguided attempt to save her kingdom, used the Manna spell, causing the utter destruction of Nazcaa and the eventual birth of the White Witch.]]
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:In that he's inexplicably a child when you first meet him, despite him dying as an adult.]]
* QuestForIdentity: He travels the world trying to figure out who he was.
* WalkingSpoiler: Needless to say, there's a lot about Horace that sheds a lot of light on much of the game's backstory.

!!Old Father Oak
->Voiced by: Alexander Morton

A very old tree that lives in the Deep Dark Wood. He is one of the first people Oliver encounters in the other world. He assists Oliver by giving him his first spells and the Telling Stone, a compendium of knowledge.

* DeadpanSnarker: Towards Drippy.
* TheMentor: Gives Oliver his first spells, as well as his first Familiar.
* WalkingTheEarth: Did so in his youth. How he did it is detailed in a Wizard's Companion tale that he gives you.
* WiseTree: [[spoiler:Though his backstory implies that he wasn't always so wise.]]

!!Smiley n' Surly
->Voiced by: Owain Rhys Davies (Smiley) and Matthew Gravelle (Surly)

Two faeries who are friends with Drippy, as he had trained them on their comedy stylings when they were up-and-comers. They put on a comedy routine in the Fairygrounds.

* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Their little comedy bits are this.
* RedOniBlueOni: They're even color coded to match!
* ThoseTwoGuys: Aside from just being Drippy's old "butties", they are also Drippy's informants, providing important news to him while he was dormant as a doll. [[spoiler:However, Drippy later tells Oliver (if you speak to him in Nevermore or the Ivory Tower) that the two were idiots that never gave him ''any'' useful information.]]

->Voiced by: Max Cazier

Oliver's best friend. He has a hobby of making cars in his spare time. He is a hard working person, but tends to be stubborn and defensive.

* CoolCar: The Philmobile. [[spoiler: You can even obtain it for yourself in post-game!]]
* FireForgedFriends: Implied with him and Oliver. One of the flashbacks implies that they originally weren't on equal terms, as Phil would occasionally pick on Oliver.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for the [[spoiler: death of Oliver's mother and spends most of the time after the event depressed. He even loses his ambition, which causes a Nightmare to spawn in him.]]
* JerkAssWithAHeartOfGold: Shows a bit of a mean side from teasing Oliver and "Starey Mary", but he genuinely means well.
