->''" I think you're one of my most precious students… and… you're like a little brother to me."''
-->--'''Iruka to Naruto'''

OK, he doesn't appear all that often, but to deny his impact on Naruto's life would be impossible.

Iruka is a Chunin, an academy instructor, and -- at first -- one of the few people willing to acknowledge Naruto as anything other than a hideous monster. This is mainly because Naruto's childhood mirrored his own -- both lost their parents at an early age, and both tried to cope by acting out and becoming goofballs. (Though it's stated that Iruka did feel awkward around Naruto at first -- his parents were killed by Kurama, after all). It's this influence in Naruto's life that keeps him from becoming a psychotic killer -- like, for example, Gaara.

Iruka appears rather infrequently in the plot but remains incredibly beloved with the fandom. He figures pretty heavily into the first episode, where he fights Mizuki with Naruto, but later is reduced to a few cameo appearances. He's also involved in one of the {{Filler}} arcs and actually gets to fight.

In ''Shippuden'', he appears to welcome back Naruto to the village, then doesn't show up for a ''long'' time. He finally reappears in Chapter 405, where he helps Naruto get over the death of Jiraiya. Pain attacks him during the second invasion of Konoha, but Kakashi saves him. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he's sent to try and stop Naruto leaving the island, but decides to tell him the truth about the war, and is unable to prevent Naruto from running off.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Iruka attends Naruto and Hinata's wedding as the former's surrogate father, and becomes the Ninja Academy's principal by the time of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}''.

->His hobby is going to the hot springs.
->Favorite word is "Reliance"
----
* AdvertisedExtra: He's nowhere near as prominent as some of the story's posters (including the one here) and other promotional material would have you believe -- he only makes token appearances throughout the manga, and only fares slightly better in {{Filler}}.
* AllThereInTheManual: He's a chūnin academy teacher and possibly one of the most genuinely kind people in Konoha, but his overall stats reveal that he is more skilled than quite a few jonin and special jonin. He does, however, lose the fight against Mizuki, albeit largely as a result of TakingTheBullet for Naruto, leaving him weakened.
* AnimalMotifs: Dolphins. His name, when spelled "umi no iruka", [[MeaningfulName means "sea dolphins"]] and he can use echolocation.
* AttentionWhore: As a young boy, he would do ridiculous things like humiliating himself in front of his classmates for attention to cope with the loneliness of being an orphan.
* BadassBookworm: Chunin-level academy teacher. Capable of projecting two sophisticated, all-senses illusions on opposite sides of Konoha. Echolocation (a possible bloodline limit). Can handle repeatedly being kicked in the spine by a beyond-super-strong former best friend. As skillful as ''Anko''. Stood up to ''[[PersonOfMassDestruction Pain]]''. He's still a Chunin simply because there's no reason for a higher rank while working as an academy teacher.
* BadassTeacher: Dude threw himself in front of a giant ass shuriken in order to protect Naruto in the first chapter.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's an extremely laid-back and compassionate man in almost every appearance, but that all flies out the window when someone tries to hurt Naruto.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards his former or current students, especially Naruto. Overlaps with PapaWolf.
* BigBrotherMentor: Towards his former or current students, especially Naruto. Bonus points for being their Academy Instructor.
* CelibateHero: Never has any romantic pursuits throughout the series. The closest he gets is in the Mizuki Strikes Back filler when Pakkun [[MistakenForRomance mistook]] his interactions with ''Mizuki's'' fiancé Tsubaki as flirting.
** After Naruto asked him to act as his father and best man in his wedding, Iruka goes back to his empty apartment and resolves to find someone to settle down with and finally getting over his childhood trauma. Though by the time Boruto is 12 (Iruka would be about 42 at that point), it seems he still hasn't found a wife probably because he's a workaholic.
* CharacterDevelopment: A pretty decent amount for a minor character.
** In one of the {{Filler}}s, after a dangerous mission with Kakashi, he comes back wounded and he tells Hiruzen he wants to be a teacher at the Academy. Soon after, he's appointed as the homeroom teacher of Naruto and becomes depressed because he doesn't know how to get through to him because he can't help but think about the monster that killed his parents. Thanks to Kakashi, he begins to understand Naruto as a person, not as the Nine-Tails' Jinchuuriki.
** At the beginning of the series, he had no problem requesting that none of the Rookie Nine be allowed to take the Chunin Exams while their teachers were present. He taught them all so he believed that he had a better idea of their strengths and weaknesses were. He didn't think any of them were prepared. Kakashi tells him rather matter-of-factly that they were not his students anymore but the members of Team 7 were his soldiers. Later on, he understands Kakashi's words for himself when he is able to be the one to congratulate Team 7 when they passed the second phase of the exams. [[spoiler:He finally came to terms with Naruto's growth as a shinobi through a letter to him wishing for his safe return.]]
* CharacterTics: Whenever he blushes, he will scratch his scar.
* ContainmentField: One of his known jutsu is a sealing barrier that he used on Naruto.
* CoolTeacher: He's the only adult that Naruto interacted with regularly for much of his life prior to the start of the series that didn't treat Naruto like trash.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Both his parents were killed by the Nine-Tailed Fox, leaving him an orphan. He became a SadClown to cope with loneliness.
* ADayInTheLimelight: There's a 3-part episode {{Filler}} arc after the Invasion of Pain arc that details a fictitious version of him first meeting Naruto.
* DecoyProtagonist: He's set up as a major character in the first chapter, but is pushed OutOfFocus pretty quickly.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: He insists that Naruto is not allowed to go home until he cleans the monuments, but after Naruto sullenly points out that he has no one to go home to, offers to buy him ramen if he finishes.
* FirstFriend: To Naruto. Iruka being the first person to treat Naruto as a human being is what kept him from turning out as Gaara did. He remains a supportive figure throughout Naruto's life.
* FormerTeenRebel: Like Naruto, he became a prankster as a means of coping with his parents' death, making him strict but sympathetic with Naruto (he makes Naruto clean up his graffiti on the Hokage faces, but after Naruto points out he has no one to go home to, he offers to buy him ramen).
* ForWantOfANail: If Iruka had not stood up for him against Mizuki, Naruto could very well have ended up, in a worst-case scenario, a murderous monster like Gaara initially was or a hate-filled avenger like Sasuke. Naruto even acknowledges this.
* FreakinessShame: When Mizuki points out that Naruto is the "[[SealedEvilInACan reincarnation]]" of the Nine-Tailed Fox that killed his parents and that he has every reason to hate and want to kill him, Iruka initially seems to agree, then angrily rebukes his former comrade. It's this that prevents Naruto from [[DespairEventHorizon snapping]] and proving everyone's fears right.
* GeometricMagic: We finally see him use ninjutsu in Chapter 535 and its a barrier seal but Naruto is able to escape easily.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Across his nose.
* LikeASonToMe: Towards Naruto. Frequently mixes into the [[ParentalSubstitute fatherly domain]] as well.
* MeaningfulEcho: 600 chapters into the manga, and the words and actions of Iruka in the very first chapter [[{{UpbringingMakesTheHero}} inspire Naruto and enable him to befriend Kurama]], thus making Iruka indirectly responsible for ''rehabilitating a living mass of hate and turning it into a hero''.
* MeaningfulName: "Umino Iruka" is a riff on "umi no iruka," or "sea dolphin." In a few {{Filler}} episodes, he can use echolocation.
* NiceGuy: Iruka is described as being both big-hearted, and soft-hearted.
* NoseBleed: Gets these from Naruto's perverted jutsus, and Naruto nicknames him this at one point.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: He realizes that he and Naruto had very similar childhoods, and he is one of the few people to acknowledge him as more than the Nine-Tails' host.
* PapaWolf: To most of his students, but ''especially'' towards Naruto. Iruka's more than willing to challenge Kakashi when he feels that Naruto's being put in unnecessary danger and he won't hesitate to place himself in harm's way if it'll protect his favorite student.
* ParentalSubstitute: Naruto suggests that being with him is like having a father. In ''[[Literature/NarutoHiden Konoha Hiden]]'', Naruto asks him to come to [[spoiler:[[OfficialCouple his and Hinata's]] wedding]] as his father. Iruka himself disagrees with the sentiment, considering Naruto and his relationship to be a brotherly one. Possibly because he's only ten years older than Naruto.
* RankUp: Even though he's retired as a ninja, he's now the headmaster of the Ninja Academy in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Though he initially didn't like Naruto at first in a {{Filler}} arc, he quickly realized that Naruto was his own person and ''not'' the Nine-Tails' host.
* SadClown: Iruka is implied to have been like this, having lost both his parents to the Nine-Tailed Fox. Unlike Naruto, he did not have to deal with being hated, but he acted the way he did to ease his loneliness. He reaches out to Naruto when he realizes they have this in common and becomes Naruto's first father figure.
* ScarsAreForever: Iruka has a scar that runs across the bridge of his nose -- which he has had since his youth.
* ShutUpHannibal: Mizuki tries to convince Iruka to help him kill Naruto, saying he's a vicious monster who would destroy the village. Iruka appears to agree, then refutes Mizuki's statement by saying that Naruto and the Nine-Tailed Fox are not one and the same. Naruto, who was teetering on the edge of a FaceHeelTurn, overhears this and comes to his rescue, proving him right.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Despite making only sporadic appearances in both anime and manga, he is one of the few characters who deeply impacted Naruto as a person.
* SoProudOfYou: To Naruto on numerous occasions as he grows and matures throughout the series, but especially after Jiraiya's death and Pain's invasion of Konoha.
* SternTeacher: Iruka is a strict teacher, but also a kind one.
* TeamDad: Even though he is [[TeamMom soft and caring]], he's a strict teacher.
* TeamMom: Despite his [[TeamDad strict nature]], he fits this personality more.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Iruka, like Naruto, enjoys ramen, with Ichiraku Ramen being his premier choice.
* YouKilledMyFather: For a long time, Iruka hated Naruto due to his parents dying in Kurama's rampage. He comes to see past this and his acknowledgment of Naruto as his own person instead of the Nine-Tailed Fox in human form made all the difference.
* YouShallNotPass: [[spoiler:To Naruto, himself when he tries to leave the island and join the war. Naruto shrugs it off, anyway. Though Iruka had a feeling it would go that way anyway.]]

->''"Thank you for letting me be your mother, and for letting Minato be your father. Thank you for being our son. Thank you... Thank you!"''

Naruto's MissingMom. Originally from the Whirlpool country, she grew up in a time of very many wars before eventually coming to live in Konoha after her country was destroyed. Became Kurama's second Jinchuuriki, after receiving it directly from the first one, the First Hokage's wife Mito Uzumaki; Tobi somehow discovered this and extracted Kurama from her, taking advantage of the fact that Kushina had just given birth to Naruto. She dies soon afterward, but not before taking part in the defense of Konoha by helping Minato seal the fox (along with some of her own chakra) into their son.

Over 16 years after her death, the sealed chakra comes into play when she appears inside Naruto's head to help him defeat Kurama and to explain the details of Kurama's attack, as well as just to finally bond with the son that tragedy prevented her from raising.

->Her hobbies were pulling pranks and chatting.
->Favorite phrase was "Don't give up until the very end"
----
* ActionMom: She even managed to survive having Kurama pulled out of her, albeit only briefly. She even took a freaking claw through the stomach and ''caught it on the way out'' to keep it from hitting Naruto.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. She's gorgeous as an adult in both the manga and the anime, but her pudgy face as a child, which led to her initial nickname "Tomato", is an InformedDeformity in the anime while being much more apparent in the manga.
* BarrierMaiden: Not only was Kurama's seal made from her chakra, but she was also the former Jinchuriki of Kurama. More exactly, the second one: the first was Mito, a member of her clan and the First Hokage's wife.
* BattleCouple: She and Minato definitely count, as they worked together to seal Kurama into Naruto and play the ThanatosGambit that would take their lives and be so important for their village and their kid.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: For most of her life, people made fun of her red hair. However, when she was rescued by Minato from the Kumo ninja, he boldly complemented her red hair by telling her that it was beautiful. This is the main reason why Kushina realized she was in love with him.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When her spirit tells Naruto about her [[BullyHunter childhood]], she starts giving off BloodKnight vibes that freak him out, all while [[TranquilFury keeping a serene smile on her face]].
* BullyHunter: In her youth, she beat up everyone who teased her.
* BullyMagnet: Kushina was picked on in her youth because of her red hair.
* ChainPain: She could form chains made out of chakra and her specialty sealing jutsu were themed around them.
* CharacterTics: Like her son, she scratched the back of her head when she felt flattered.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She and Minato knew each other as kids, and couldn't have been more than about 14 when they fell in love.
* ColorMotifs: Red, given her fiery personality and beautiful red hair. She was even given the nickname, ''"Red HotBlooded Habanero"''.
* CutenessProximity: Her reaction whenever she saw Rin Nohara; she'd often hug her and kiss her forehead on site.
-->'''Kushina''': You're just so cuuute!! You are such a good girl, Rin, you know?
* DeadPersonConversation: With Naruto, when he tries to defeat Kurama. Minato had a sealed a piece of Kushina inside Naruto's seal for them to talk at one point.
* FieryRedhead: She beat up all the kids who called her "Tomato," thus earning her new "Red HotBlooded Habanero" nickname[[note]]Just "Red-Hot Habanero" in English[[/note]]. Her spirit even gave her own son a good thwack when he accused her of being Kurama's real form and how off-putting she laughed, too. Though she acknowledged and apologized for her temperamental fuse.
* ForceField: She was able to generate powerful barrier ninjutsu with her chains.
* GeniusDitz: She often acted ditzy or HotBlooded, [[LikeParentLikeChild exactly like Naruto]], and admitted her ninjutsu sucked. But she also taught Minato many sealing techniques. The kind for which her country was destroyed because they were so feared.
* HairTriggerTemper: She was pretty well-known by her loved ones for her burning temper, even in her adult years. Though even she is a little off-put by her natural impatience when her spirit was too quick to thwack her son when he mistook her for Kurama and told her how unnatural her laugh is.
* HappilyMarried: To Minato. They had a loving and close marriage when they were alive.
* HeroicHost: While she was never shown using Kurama's powers, she was still his Jinchuriki from a young age.
* HotBlooded: Despite being a demure housewife on the surface, she had a fiery temper. It was even part of her nickname.
* HotConsort: To the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze.
* IAmNotPretty: Kushina's spirit actually apologizes to Naruto for inheriting her face instead of his father's, but Naruto is glad she's so pretty.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Naruto's personality, intelligence, and [[RebelliousSpirit his reputation as a rebellious child]] were heavily influenced by his mother Kushina. She was known for her HotBlooded nature, ninjutsu style, the tendency to pull pranks, [[CharacterTic unique character]] and verbal tics, and being the host of the nine-tailed fox Kurama. Like her son, Kushina was also a {{Bully Hunter}} in her youth. Interestingly, Kushina and Naruto had a similar experience with their respective partners - they didn't have a good first impression of them. Kushina didn't like Minato's quiet and nice demeanor until she got to know him better, while Naruto had a similar experience with Hinata. Both eventually formed [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan strong relationships with their kind partners]] and had a LoveEpiphany, realizing that their partner was their one true love. In fact, Naruto shares far more similarities with his mother, Kushina, than with his father, Minato, as pointed out by Tsunade in Chapter 367. This sentiment is agreed upon by both Kushina and Minato themselves in Chapters 498 and 645, respectively.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: She and Naruto's future wife, [[spoiler:Hinata]], both went through a lot of the same life events and share certain hobbies: Both have unique hair colors that match their respective personalities. Both were kidnapped by Kumo ninja when they were younger because of the powers they possessed. Both fell in love with their husbands because [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan their husbands are good men]] who are [[AmazonChaser attracted to their strength]], consider them very beautiful partly because of their long flowing hair, love their home cooking, and [[LoveRedeems changed them for the better]]. Both are not afraid to die to protect Naruto because of [[ActOfTrueLove their love for him]]. Both were bullied as children because of a physical feature of theirs -- Kushina's round face and red hair; [[spoiler:Hinata's Byakugan eyes]]. [[TextileWorkIsFeminine Both enjoy knitting scarves]]. Both fell in love with their husbands via RescueRomance, and both rescue scenarios utilized the RedStringOfFate. Both passed down their round face and eye shape to their sons. Finally, both are considered really scary by their sons when they get mad.
* LongestPregnancyEver: Justified since being a Jinchuuriki resulted in her pregnancy running ten months instead of the usual nine.
* LongLived: Implied, but ultimately downplayed. She hails from the Uzumaki Clan, who are famed for their 'longevity'. As proof of that claim, she survived a Tailed Beast extraction process, and this is when she has just given birth and at her weakest.
* LoveEpiphany: Her spirit explains to Naruto how she fell in love with Minato: when she was kidnapped by the Kumo ninja, Kushina left a trail of strands from her long red hair. Minato was the only one able to decipher the trail, ended up rescuing her, and then boldly complemented her red hair.
* LoveRedeems: Her spirit tells Naruto that when she realized she was in love with Minato after he rescued her from the Kumo ninja, she had changed for the better because of him:
-->'''Kushina:''' That day, I saw Minato as an amazingly splendid ninja. He made me believe that he could fulfill my dreams, and above all, ''he changed me''. This ordinary red hair that I hated so much had led me to [[OneTrueLove my soulmate]]. It became my own personal "[[RedStringOfFate red thread of fate]]." Ever since then, I liked my hair and, most of all, I loved Minato.
* MamaBear: When Kurama tried to kill baby Naruto, Kushina threw herself in front of the fox so that its giant claw impaled her instead of her son, then ''grabbed the claw and physically stopped it from reaching Naruto.'' Keep in mind that she just gave birth and was slowly dying at that point.
* MissingMom: She died less than an hour after Naruto was born, but part of her chakra was set inside the seal, so happy reunions all around!
* MotherhoodIsSuperior: This is played in opposite directions in important plot points:
** Straight -- Part of Minato's reasoning for using the Reaper Death Seal is that he didn't believe he could replace Kushina in Naruto's life. This method could preserve Kushina's spirit inside the seal on Naruto. From the other side of things, when Naruto eventually meets Minato through the seal, he punched his father for putting the fox in him. Though after apologizing, Naruto accepted it and his father's words helped him with the Fox. When meeting his mother in similar circumstances, he hugged her (though not before accusing her of being the fox... and then getting hit.) Then she helped him pull out Kurama's chakra with a mother's love and really strong chakra chains.
** {{Inverted|Trope}} -- it was her pregnancy that weakened the seal on Kurama and enabled the masked man to steal him.
* MotorMouth: She's very talkative and chatting is actually one of her hobbies.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Red HotBlooded Habanero.
* NiceGirl: The individual in question has a reputation for being an amiable and generous person, always ready with a friendly smile and a warm greeting. However, there are instances when she can display signs of impatience, which she herself admits can be unappealing.
* OneTrueLove: When Kushina first arrived to Konoha, she was derided for being an outsider and teased for her long red hair, which caused her to hate it. The one exception to this was Minato, who didn't care for her status as an outsider, instead admiring her beautiful hair and later, her strength and spirit. Eventually, that red hair led to him rescuing her from a kidnapping attempt, the event that helped Kushina realize that he was her soulmate.
* OppositesAttract: With her husband Minato, whom she initially saw as a wimp. While she was a HotBlooded {{Tomboy}}, he was [[NiceGuy a very nice and polite man]].
* PosthumousCharacter: After Naruto suppresses the fox, her spirit reveals that she's planning on rejoining Minato, indicating that she truly is dead. And this is confirmed later, as she fades away a while later.
* ThePrankster: Like her son, Kushina would also play pranks.
* PunnyName: Uzumaki -- "Uzu" means "whirlpool".
* RasputinianDeath: Kushina was incredibly durable in her final hours. Minutes after giving birth to Naruto, she had Kurama extracted from her, something that instantly kills people even at the height of their strength. After that, she survived getting stabbed by the Nine-Tails. She finally died when she completely bled out.
* RedBaron: "The Bloody Habanero/Red Hot-blooded Habanero".
* RedheadInGreen: As seen in the page picture, Kushina had long red hair and wore a green dress.
* RedHeadedStepchild: She was bullied when she was young because of her distinctive long red hair.
* RedheadsAreRavishing: Kushina was initially mocked for her long red hair, but unfortunately for her bullies, it was the source of her power and [[PrehensileHair she even fought with it]], earning her the nickname "Red HotBlooded Habanero." When she was kidnapped by Kumo ninja, she [[TrailOfBreadCrumbs left behind strands of her hair]] for anyone to follow, which helped Minato track her down. [[RescueRomance When he rescued her]], Minato boldly stated that her red hair was "beautiful." Given that he was the first person to compliment her hair, Kushina was putty in Minato's arms very quickly. Afterwards, Kushina was renowned for her beauty in the [[HomeBase Leaf Village]].
* RedOniBlueOni: She was a loud and HotBlooded Red to her husband Minato's calm and mild Blue.
* RedStringOfFate: In a metaphorical sense. Strands of her long red hair led Minato to find and rescue her. She came to not only appreciate her hair (hearing from him that he'd always considered it beautiful), but she came to consider it as the "red thread of fate" that led to them falling in love.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Her given name is likely derived from Kushinada-hime, Susanoo's wife, of Shinto religion.
* RescueRomance: She fell in love with Minato when he rescued her from a group of Kumo ninja who had kidnapped her.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The hot-headed Energetic Girl to Minato's cool-headed Savvy Guy.
* ScreamingBirth: Very much {{justified|Trope}} in her case. She was Kurama's Jinchuriki and childbirth weakens the seal, meaning she had to hold the demon ''in'' while pushing her kid ''out''. Kushina screamed very loudly from the extreme stress and physical pain as she and her husband struggled to make sure Naruto was born safely without letting Kurama break free from the seal.
* SealedInAPersonShapedCan: She was Kurama's Jinchuriki until Naruto's birth.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: According to Tsunade, she grew into her looks.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: What really made Kushina fall in love with Minato was him rescuing her from the Kumo ninja who kidnapped her and afterward referring to her long red hair, something that was repeatedly made fun of, as beautiful.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: In the ''Manga/NarutoTheWhorlWithinTheSpiral'' one-shot, Kushina is kept confined in a special seal that helps keep Kurama suppressed. [[spoiler:Upon sneaking out to visit Minato, she rapidly succumbs to Kurama's control and undergoes Bijufication, slipping into her [[AnimalBattleAura Version 1]] Tailed Beast Mode -- where she develops Naruto's iconic whisker markings -- and attacking Minato under Kurama's control. Minato attempts help Kushina seal Kurama as it breaks free of the seals suppressing it within her inner world, but Kurama's rage enables it to break free and send Kushina into her [[OneWingedAngel Version 2]] Tailed Beast Mode until Minato is able to project his consciousness into Kushina's inner world and defeat it with his newly-perfected Rasengan.]]
* TextileWorkIsFeminine: In ''The Last'', it's revealed that she knitted a green scarf, and it was left in the care of the Third Hokage upon her death.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She may have been a rough-housing terror in her youth, but Minato's [[ThroughHisStomach favorite food]] was [[SupremeChef her home cooking]]. ''The Last'' reveals that [[TextileWorkIsFeminine she also enjoyed knitting scarves]]. Interestingly, [[LikeParentLikeSpouse she shares these two traits]] with Naruto's future wife Hinata.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Naruto got his love of ramen from her, though it is interesting to note that their favorite ''flavors'' of ramen differ. Namely, Naruto's favorite is Miso Ramen with extra pork while Kushina likes Salt Ramen.
* TrailOfBreadCrumbs: When she was kidnapped by the Kumo ninja, she left behind a trail of her red hair, which is how Minato found her.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sweet type. Kushina was usually very sweet, but she was also quick to anger.
* UsedToBeATomboy: In her youth, she was a ''lot'' more temperamental and beat people up for teasing or bullying her. She became more feminine as an adult and was apparently a nice {{housewife}} for Minato.
* VerbalTic: "''Dattebane!''", translated as "Y'know!". She does it when flustered or excited, just like Naruto (though his is "Dattebayo").
%%* WackyCravings: Happened during a short flashback.

Ebisu is a Tokubetsu Jonin who specializes in the private training of elite ninja, such as Konohamaru. He first appears in the second episode, where he protests against Naruto taking Konohamaru under his wing. Naruto later goes to him for training after the Chunin Exam tournament's preliminaries, but he gets knocked out by Jiraiya before he can teach him more than walking on water. It is later revealed that he used to form a team with Might Guy and Genma Shiranui. In the anime, their teacher was Choza Akimichi.

In the dub, he repeatedly calls Konohamaru the "honorable grandson of the Third Hokage".

->Favorite word: "elite"
----
* CharacterDevelopment: Ebisu was introduced as one of the many adults of Konoha who detested Naruto because of the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed inside of him. After seeing Naruto’s positive impact on Konohamaru and spending the day as his teacher, Ebisu's view on the young ninja changes, as he begins to let go of his misguided hatred and respect Naruto. During the Pain Invasion, he refuses to tell Pain's Naraka Path Naruto's whereabouts even under the threat of death.
* CharacterTics: When perturbed, Ebisu often pushes his sunglasses up his nose.
* CoolShades: He wears black sunglasses.
* CovertPervert: Judging by his reaction to Naruto's Harem Jutsu...
* FlippingTheBird: In the manga, he uses his middle finger to push up his glasses which looks like he's giving the finger.
* HeroicSacrifice: Averted. He was clearly willing to pull one for Konohamaru during Pain's assault, but Konohamaru refuses to run away and decides to help instead. This ends up saving his life.
* InformedAbility: Ebisu was hired as Konohamaru's personal teacher because he is one of the most skilled ninjas in the Leaf. This was never shown in full.
** Finally shown with his fight with Pain. The fact that he survived, at all, is a testament to his skill. It seems more of a combination of arrogance and complacency that holds him back.
* JackOfAllStats: Described as being decent in most combat skills.
* OnlyOneName: He doesn't have a last name.
* PapaWolf: Ebisu has a lot of attachment to his students, going so far to pull a HeroicSacrifice to protect Konohamaru.
* PlayingWithFire: In the anime, he can use the Fire Release.
* SternTeacher: More or less, though a bit overboard as he sometimes tries to limit what his students are exposed to.
* WeakButSkilled: Downplayed, since he doesn't get enough screentime to fully showcase his fighting prowess, but he's shown to have a strong grasp of the fundamentals, which is why he's entrusted with training the Third Hokage's grandson and Naruto for a brief period of time.
* WorfHadTheFlu: During his fight with Pain, Ebisu was actually holding his own very well. Despite this, Pain had him outmatched, but was attempting to capture, not kill, Ebisu. Ebisu glances away to make sure Konohamaru escaped, opening himself up to a knee strike to the face. Ebisu's first thought is that he screwed up. Out in the field in similar conditions and without having to worry about his student (or the FantasticNuke Pain was withholding), he might have won. This is proven when Konohamaru takes down Pain moments later. Granted, this is contingent on Pain having to split his attention between all 7 of his bodies, but it's still an impressive showing given two Chuuin were literally curbstomped in 2 seconds just prior to this.

->''"Someone told me there's no shortcut on the path of a ninja!"''

Grandson of the Third Hokage, nephew of Asuma; first introduced early in the series as an 8-year-old privately tutored in ninja arts by self-described elite teacher Ebisu in this appearance; later on, he is a regular Academy student. His goal is to become Hokage -- ''after'' Naruto, whom he sees as a role model (addressing him as ''[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseSiblingTerminology Naruto-niichan]]'').

Generally, the appearance of Konohamaru in Part I is an indication that you're watching {{Filler}}. In the manga, he only appears in the Introduction and the Chunin Exams arc.

In Part II/Shippuden, Konohamaru has become a genin and is part of a team consisting of Udon and Moegi and under the tutelage of Ebisu. As with Part I, he has little to do in the manga, while the anime significantly expands on his role, including showing him in a battle for the first time. He masters the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique from his grandfather, the Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning Technique from his uncle, and Rasengan from Naruto.

In ''Boruto'', Konohamaru is an adult jōnin and mentors the next generation of Team 7, consisting of Naruto's son, Boruto Uzumaki; Sasuke's and Sakura's daughter, Sarada Uchiha; and Orochimaru's son, Mitsuki.

->Favorite phrase: "There are no short cuts on the road to Hokage!"
----
* AdaptationalBadass: Konohamaru was still wearing goggles during his Post-TimeSkip debut in the manga, not shown to have become a genin until shortly before Team Guy was dispatched to help in the Kazekage mission. The anime showcases that he and his teammates have been genin for a couple of weeks already before Naruto even returned to the village.
* AnimalMotif: Like his grandfather, Konohamaru can summon a monkey who is a LivingWeapon (specifically a TelescopingStaff) in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime and his clan name means "Jumping Monkey". [[AllThereintheManual According to the databooks]], one of his favorite foods is chocolate-covered bananas, a fruit associated with monkeys.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Acts as this to Naruto who is his BigBrotherMentor by constantly questioning Naruto's skill.
* AscendedExtra: He appears sparingly in the manga, only showing up twice after his introduction in Part I whilst sporadically being showcased in Part II as Naruto continues his efforts to take back Sasuke. The anime staff apparently took his rivalry with Naruto to heart and delved into his character during major incidents such as him dealing with the aftermath of his grandfather's death plus his conflicting feelings on Tsunade's taking on the Hokage title, with him fearful of her overshadowing Hiruzen's legacy.
* AshesToAshes: He learns his uncle Asuma's signature jutsu, Fire Release: Ash Burning.
* BadassAdorable: He's still a cute kid after the time skip and manages to hit [[BigBad Pain]] with a Rasengan to save Ebisu.
* BadassBoast: "I am a genin of the Sarutobi clan, honored with the name of this village! Surname is Sarutobi! Given name is Konohamaru! Remember that!"
* BadassTeacher: Years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, his skills improved greatly to earn him the rank of Jonin. He became the jonin instructor of Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki.
* BadBadActing: In ''The Day Naruto Became Hokage'' OVA, he resorts to this while replacing Naruto for the latter's Hokage ceremony, complete with gratuitously saying ''[[VerbalTic -dattebayo]]'' multiple times.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: {{Inverted|Trope}}. It was because Naruto ''wasn't'' nice to him initially and coddling him because of his being the Third Hokage's grandson like the rest of the village that got Konohamaru to respect Naruto.
* BigBrotherMentor: He is one to Boruto who thinks of him as his "Cool dependable older brother."
* BigBrotherWorship: Thinks of [[TheHero Naruto]] as a big brother and greatly admires him.
* BlueIsHeroic: He wears his trademark blue scarf.
%% * BlushSticker: Before the TimeSkip.
* BlowYouAway: He knows how to perform Naruto's wind-style Rasengan - a feat that is notoriously difficult.
* BrattyHalfPint: He starts out this way, but tones it down slightly after the TimeSkip.
* ButtMonkey: In a one-shot omake leading up to ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie'', Konohamru's attempts to come off as a CoolTeacher fails spectacularly. [[spoiler:He attempts to perform the bell test and ends up suffering a GroinAttack, gets lemons squirted into his eyes, and finally beaten to a pulp by Sarada]].
* CantHoldTheirLiquor: After a few drinks, Konohamaru gets ''hammered'' when he sits down with Hanabi, Moegi, Udon, and Shino.
* CharacterDevelopment: In his first appearance, Konohamaru had a naive expectation that he could become Hokage easily. Naruto points out his naivete and that Konohamaru would have to beat him and anyone else to earn the title. Konohamaru takes this to heart and begins training and studying intensely in order to work his way there.
* ChildishToothGap: Had a chipped tooth in his Academy days which represented his naive, bratty nature.
* CrazyPrepared: He has a seal tattooed to his chest which will release him from any enemy seals in the event he is captured.
* ContainmentField: Konohamaru is skilled in sealing jutsu such as the Three Directions Seal and the Monkey Yang Suppression.
* EnergyBall: He learned the Rasengan from Naruto.
* FlechetteStorm: Inherits the Third Hokage's Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique.
* GenerationXerox:
** [[AdaptationExpansion In the anime]], he uses techniques from both his late grandfather and uncle and Naruto.
** During the epilogue, Konohamaru is shown to be much more strict but also dense at the same time, much like his teacher Ebisu, as well as a hypocrite.
** There are also parallels with Kakashi, the teacher of the previous Team 7. In the Mitsuki arc, it is revealed that Konohamaru used to serve in the ANBU black ops, much like Kakashi.
* GogglesDoNothing: Like Naruto, he wears them as he would a headband until he makes Genin.
* {{Gonk}}: His first attempts at the Sexy Jutsu.
* HairstyleInertia: Kept the same spiky hairstyle from his childhood all the way to his adulthood.
* HeroWorshipper: He idolizes Naruto because he is the first person outside his immediate family who treats him like he actually ''wants'' to be treated (everyone else called him "Honorable Grandson" and gave him recognition for his grandfather, not himself). Additionally, Naruto taught him the value of working hard to escape a shadow you're caught in (his being the Third Hokage's, Naruto's being the Nine-Tailed Fox).
* HiddenDepths: During his time at the Academy, Konohamaru was extremely sharp-witted. This was shown when he noticed the schedule of classes was off combined with Iruka being much more serious than usual, which was a response to Konoha Crush invasion.
* {{Hypocrite}}: In the epilogue, he harps on Boruto Uzumaki for his mischievous behavior much the way Iruka used to do to Naruto, and Naruto himself considers mentioning Konohamaru was no better as a child.
* InvisibleParents: Konohamaru's parents conspicuously never appear in the series. At least one extras mention that one of them is/was an ANBU, a profession that Konohamaru himself would attain years later.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: A mouthy brat with a good and courageous heart.
* MeaningfulName: He is named after Konohagakure, the Leaf Village. ''Konoha'' means "leaf".
* MesACrowd: He can use the Shadow Clone Technique.
* MobileShrubbery: Used one pre-Shippuden with Moegi and Udon. It was kind of a running gag in the anime.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Konohamaru is skilled with specialized weapons such as staves and trench knives.
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya: When Konohamaru confronts Pain when the latter attacked Konoha. Also doubles as a BadassBoast.
-->''I'm a genin of the Sarutobi clan, endowed with the name of the village! My family name is Sarutobi!! My given name, Konohamaru!! Remember it, hey!!!''
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: In the fifteen years between ''Naruto'' and ''Boruto'', Konohamaru works with the ANBU for a while. He dons the ANBU mask again during the search for Mitsuki.
* PaperThinDisguise: Some of his disguises, like a perfectly rectangular rock with visible eyeholes that has ''gunpowder'' in it.
* PlayingWithFire: Fire jutsu are a specialty of the Sarutobi clan and Konohamaru is no exception. With it, he can [[BreathWeapon breathe]] flamethrowers, fireballs, and plumes of explosive ash.
* PuppyLove: With Moegi in Part I.
* RoyalBrat: Started off like this in Part I, but thanks to Naruto he gradually loses it.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Konohamaru's always wearing a blue scarf, which tends to billow behind him in action scenes, but due to his youth and inexperience [[SubvertedTrope would often be grabbed by enemies]] as an adult his scarf is tied much shorter keeping it more practical.
* StarCrossedLovers: In the Boruto anime, he falls in love with Remon Yoimura but [[UptownGirl she’s part of a wealthy clan]] and has an ArrangedMarriage with her distant relative because they need to preform a marriage ceremony in order to seal off a memory-stealing demon called Soma. They later find out Soma had took possession of her fiancé and breaks the seal, forcing Remon to pull out to a new strategy to seal off the demon, [[spoiler: at the cost of her memories. Konohamaru reluctantly agrees to help her on the ritual. He even confess his love to her and embrace Remon, just as she forgets him! He forces himself to leave the now amnesiac Remon to her fiancé, even as Boruto calls him out for not following his heart. Konohamaru just tells him there’s some things he won’t understand at his age but will get it someday.]]
* SummonMagic: Toads and Monkeys in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime.
* TeamDad: In ''Boruto'', he is strict but beloved to his team and when Mitsuki went missing he repeatedly requests to be allowed to find him and upon finding him welcomes him back with a hug -- even knowing he is the son of Orochimaru.
* TelescopingStaff: His monkey familiar can change into one for him as a ShoutOut to Literature/JourneyToTheWest like his grandfather before him.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Konohamaru's first appearance has him trying and badly failing at ''assassinating'' the Third Hokage. During the war in Part II, he saves Ebisu's life by using his shadow clones and Rasengan to temporarily knock out one of Pain's bodies.
** As a jonin in ''Boruto'', he easily subdues [[ChildProdigy Boruto]] in a matter of seconds and takes down opponents with a Wind Release Rasengan, ''by himself''; a feat that Kakashi could not accomplish due to the immense difficulty of adding an element to the technique and that Naruto cannot do in the beginning without the assistance of a shadow clone.
* VerbalTic: "''kore''".
* WarriorPrince: Grandson of the Third Hokage, making him a prince. By Part II, he manages to attack one of Pain's bodies and becomes a BadassTeacher as an adult.
* TheWorfEffect: In the ''Boruto'' manga, Konohamaru constantly throws himself between his students and the enemy taking wounding blows and has to be taken out of the fight so Boruto has the chance to shine.

Konohamaru's friend and teammate. She is an Academy student in Part I and a genin in Part II. In ''Boruto'', Moegi is jōnin instructor for Team 10, consisting of the next generation of Ino-Shika-Cho: Shikadai Nara, Chocho Akimichi, and Inojin Yamanaka.
----
* ActionGirl: She's a talented kunoichi; enough to become a jonin by the time on Manga/{{Boruto}}.
* AdaptationalBadass: Her team didn't become genin until shortly after Gaara's kidnapping in the manga, while they had already made genin a couple of weeks prior to Naruto's return in the anime.
* AscendedExtra: She and Udon only appeared in Part I before the chūnin exams and in Part II in a quick cameo during the Kazekage Rescue arc. The anime greatly increases their screentime with Konohamaru and gives Moegi some notable traits such as no longer having patience for the former and Naruto's pervy antics in Part II, taking Sakura's place from the manga as the one who derides the Girl on Girl jutsu as useless fluff.
* BlushStickers: Had them as a child.
* DishingOutDirt: She can use Earth Style: Mud Wall as a defensive fortification.
* GreenThumb: Moegi rather mysteriously gains the ability to use Wood Style as an adult. Mysterious, as it's been established that only Hashirama Senju and people injected with his genes are able to use it. It's probably a reference to her name (Moegi means "tree buds" in Japanese), but still.
* HairTriggerTemper: As a jōnin instructor. Considering that her team is much more trickster-esque than the previous Ino-Shika-Cho, it's hard to blame her.
* MakingASplash: She has enough talent in water jutsu that she can generate water from her hands with her water hail jutsu.
* MeaningfulName: Moegi is Japanese for tree buds. As an adult, she can perform Wood Style.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: She and Udon went unnamed in the manga for years until Kishimoto eventually incorporated them into the last databook after the manga had ended. Their surnames were later given in their profiles in the ''Boruto'' manga.
* WiseBeyondHisYears: In the anime, she angrily punches Konohamaru after he uses [[GirlOnGirlIsHot Sexy: Girl on Girl Technique]]. Not because she considers it a perverted jutsu (as Sakura says whenever she smacks Naruto for doing the same), but because it's useless in battle.

Koharu Utatane is the woman. ''Really'' hates Tsunade.

Homura Mitokado is the man.

Both two are former teammates of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and students of the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju.
----
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: In a flashback, Homura (and Koharu) contributed in throwing Kurama out of Konoha by force, ''through the Village Walls'', standing in the Front Line.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Koharu's eyes are almost never shown open in her old age.[[note]]She opened them once in the Trap Master filler arc to intimidate Tsunade after the latter made a remark about her age.[[/note]] They're shown open during her youth, however, and are colored black.
* GovernmentConspiracy: Along with Danzo, they are the ones who [[spoiler:ordered the Uchiha Massacre]]. Pretty much [[IDidWhatIHadToDo confirmed]] by Danzo.
* IWasQuiteALooker: Both of them, as shown during a flashback showing events happening more than 40 years ago. This is [[http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120129231651/naruto/images/c/c5/Young_Koharu.png Koharu]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Both elders blame Tsunade for letting Konoha's destruction at the hands of Pain occur, even though she was trying everything in her power to keep everyone else alive and her decision to bring back Naruto ultimately saved the villagers from a worse fate. Hell, because of Naruto, those that did die ended up coming back to life! And it's not like one can prevent ''freaking gravity'' from activating and destroying en masse.
** This is a case of AdaptationalVillainy. In the original manga, when Homura and Koharu simply ask Tsunade to not call Naruto back during the Pain attack, their reasoning is that Naruto is still a child and the enemy is someone who killed Jiraiya, the strongest Shinobi from Konoha at the time (not counting Naruto for obvious reasons). Also, if Naruto is captured, it is game over for everyone. It is hard to argue for their jerkiness when they are willing to die to keep Naruto safe from enemy hands, though letting a great village fall seems like a high price to pay.
* KarmaHoudini:
** Koharu and Homura never really get called out or punished for supporting essentially sentencing the entire [[spoiler:Uchiha clan]] to their deaths. One could argue that there was no other choice in the matter but if the Third Hokage was doing everything in his power to prevent their deaths, one would think they'd put in the same amount of effort (admittedly Danzo and Itachi end up going behind everyone's backs, including theirs). The Third Hokage even regrets that the massacre happened at all, with the Fourth Hokage even hoping that he would have done something to stop the coup if he had lived longer--so one could also argue that it was a tragedy that could've been very much avoided.
** It's shown in the Mitsuki arc of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' that, even 15 years later, they haven't changed much. They strongly condemn Naruto for never informing them that Mitsuki is Orochimaru's son, which the latter counters by stating that if he did it, they wouldn't let him enter the village at all, and what he did is trying to make them understand and accept him in spite of his origin. Regardless, the two still decide that Mitsuki is a threat and should be court-martialed upon returning home (admittedly leaving the village the way Mitsuki did was punishable as such regardless of whether he was a threat or not, something Naruto acknowledges).
* NeverMessWithGranny: In a flashback, Koharu (and Homura) contributed in throwing Kurama out of Konoha by force, ''through the Village Walls'', standing in the Front Line. Utatane is stated to be one of the few people able to put Tsunade in her place when she oversteps her authority.
* OldMaster: Alongside Hiruzen and Danzo, they are among the oldest figures in the Leaf Village. They still serve the adviser role during the events of ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'', which would put them in their late eighties. They have served under five different Hokage for more than 55 years.
* RealityWarper: Koharu in {{Filler}}. She shows the ability to alter matter to remove explosive tags.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: So far they have not shown any resentment for Naruto, Tsunade or even the [[spoiler:Uchiha clan]] and seem to only care for the well being of Konoha... which means they can choose very harsh and brutal options, like wanting to put Naruto on a leash (Tsunade refused. Though it should be noted that the need to keep Naruto in the village is brought up by Shizune) or [[spoiler:instigating the Uchiha Massacre to avoid a civil war]]. They later wanted to protect Naruto from Akatsuki by leaving him in a secret place. Not because they cared for him as a person, but to be sure the sole Tailed-Beast Host of Konoha wouldn't be abducted.

->''"To be a shinobi is to sacrifice oneself. Closing your eyes to the sunlight, distinguishing yourself in the shadows. That is the true form of ninja."''

A war hawk who ran opposite Sarutobi for the position of the Third Hokage, but lost. Runs ANBU's Root Division, a secret-police-type division of Konoha's military which is zealously loyal to the village (or more accurately, zealously loyal to Danzo personally). (According to Danzo, Root is the unseen support on which the Leaf depends -- get it?)

May end up being quite a bit more important to the plot than his infrequent appearances would suggest (he didn't even appear until ''Shippuden''), as he's evidently been pulling strings behind the scenes for quite some time. He believes Konoha should rule by force, and resents the more diplomatic stances taken by the Third Hokage and his successors, which he believes softens the village's ninja and makes them weak.

It turns out that he wanted the position of Third Hokage so bad, that he secretly aligned himself with Hanzo of Amegakure. After Pain's invasion is thwarted, he lambasts the citizens of Konoha, stating that the interconnected Hokages made the village weak (although all of the disasters that fell upon Konoha are directly or indirectly caused by him). As a result, he is named the acting Sixth Hokage in Tsunade's absence by the daimyo but lacks the approval of the jonins needed to get the position permanently. He expects that if he can make the Kage Summit go well, they would have no choice but to give him full approval. He goes off to the summit with his bodyguards. He almost managed to get appointed leader of the alliance against Akatsuki on Mifune's advisement, but Ao interrupts, stating that Danzo's eye allows him a MindControl dojutsu that is being used to influence Mifune's decision. He admits to it, claiming that he's fulfilling a need for the shinobi to unify for protection, then makes a veiled threat towards Ao. When Sasuke invades the meeting room, he takes it as an opportunity for his party to leave with Ao in pursuit.

Tobi manages to track him down, and after a brief battle with the bodyguards, Tobi disposes of them and brings out Sasuke to fight him, at which point Danzo reveals what's really under his bandages -- [[EyesDoNotBelongThere his "collection" of Sharingan.]] Despite Danzo's liberal use of the forbidden reality-warping jutsu Izanagi, he loses the battle, and in his dying moments activates a suicide technique in a final but failed attempt to kill both Sasuke and Tobi.

It's further revealed that his obsession with ninjas being strong stems from an inferiority complex that's been with him since before Hiruzen was selected as the Third Hokage and from his personal belief that a ninja should be prepared to sacrifice himself for the greater good -- a belief he has his subordinates follow to the letter but he himself finds difficult to do. It's also revealed that his rivalry with Sarutobi was less bitter than it seems to be.

Due to Danzo's draconian beliefs and his ''need'' for Konoha's "protection", he ended up causing more problems than he solved: {{brainwash}}ing his subordinates into total obedience as he almost did with Sai, corrupting Nagato and creating "Pain" by influencing Hanzo into betraying the idealistic Akatsuki members, turning Kabuto against Konoha by having him kill his foster mother despite the years of service he put in and letting countless villagers die so he can blame Tsunade for it and usurp the Hokage position. The most jarring act is forcing Itachi to slaughter his entire clan and preventing Shisui from using his technique to end the conflict non-aggressively, all because he wanted the technique for himself. All the while he justifies these betrayals due to his belief that the people he was betraying were too good at what they did to be trusted, creating one SelfFulfillingProphecy after another when the tragedies he caused or influenced drove them to become criminals. Arguably, Danzo's death makes everyone else in the story better off in the end.

* ADayInTheLimelight: Downplayed in the Land of Tea filler, as most of what we learn about him there is told from Idate's perspective and how it shaped the latter's worldview whereas Ibiki himself doesn't appear in the story proper until the tail-end.
* CoveredInScars: his head and face have several scars inflicted from torture and battle, ranging from puncture wounds to burn marks and even a few that we learn where he got them from when his past gets showcased in a filler arc.
* ExactWords: When outlining the rules of the Chunin exam, he repeatedly warns about the consequences of getting caught cheating and challenges the examinees to show what kind of 'exceptional shinobi' they are. Sasuke eventually figures out the real nature of the exam by noticing Ibiki never actually said ''not'' to cheat and realizing that an 'exceptional shinobi' is one that could cheat without getting caught. He also never said one had to answer the test questions (only deducting points for wrong answers), so Naruto [[AchievementsInIgnorance technically passes by leaving his test blank]].
* ExaltedTorturer: He specializes in torture in order to get information for the good guys.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite being a cold-blooded interrogator, he was taken aback when he saw Kisame slaughter the rest of the Hidden Mist's Cypher Corps in order to prevent any information from falling into the Leaf's hands.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: 'Good guy' scars over his lip and cheek. The thing is, that's only two of them. The rest are under his bandanna.
* GuileHero: His job.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Towards his younger brother and possibly Naruto after he passed the hidden test.
* HiddenPurposeTest: Double-layered. An actual written exam with a hidden purpose that itself hides a second test.
* IWasQuiteALooker: As the cover of Chapter 604 reveals.
* MindRape: The "mundane" variety is his favorite interrogation tool.
* MinoredInAssKicking: Despite his imposing physical appearance, he does not focus on fighting and is more concerned with the intellectual part of the ninja job. However, he happens to be a formidable opponent as well, managing to hold his own against Pain's Animal Path, and Kishimoto even states the person he desires to fight the most is Orochimaru of all people.
* PhysicalScarsPsychologicalScars: The scars on his head represent the mental torture he underwent years back along with the burns he received from saving his little brother.
* PleaseKeepYourHatOn: The scars on his head are ''so'' horrible that everyone shudders when he takes off his bandanna. He's the one providing the trope image. Dosu wonders, in the manga only, if his hands are any worse by comparison.
* PromotionToParent: Subtly implied in Idate's flashbacks that Ibiki was the man of the house as no mention is ever made of their parents being around.
* ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated: Idate thought that he'd died in a fire that broke out when he distracted Aoi from attempting to kill the younger Morino and only found out the truth years later from Team 7.
* SiblingYinYang: Aside from looking nothing like each other, Ibiki and Idate are as different as night and day. The former being cool and distant whilst the latter is HotBlooded and a major WellDoneSonGuy.
* SoProudOfYou: To Idate upon briefly encountering him at the end of the Land of Tea filler, thinking to himself that his little brother no longer has the eyes of a coward.
* SpartanSibling: It's alluded to that Ibiki was some degree of this prior to Idate's exile. He did pull a KnightTemplarBigBrother when he found out Idate's ManipulativeBastard instructor had tricked and used him, but it was already too late by that point.
* SummonMagic: His specialty while on the battlefield. He can summon rather impressive torture devices to trap his enemies.
* TortureCellar: Can trap his enemies in one. Unfortunately, the Pain bodies... don't feel pain, so his techniques prove useless.

->''"Heads up, boys and girls, this is no time to be celebrating! I'll be your next proctor. Anko Mitarashi. You ready for the second test? Good! Then let's go, follow me!"''

A spunky, boisterous {{ninja}}, Anko is without a doubt best known in the fandom for her BadassLongcoat (which she wears [[VaporWear very little]] underneath) and her DarkAndTroubledPast -- she was a student of Orochimaru and he abandoned her... but not until AFTER he branded her with a Cursed Seal to try and see if it would kill people that were given it. It did, and she was the only one to survive. Most of her appearances have her eating her TrademarkFavoriteFood, ''dango'', which is basically a stick with dumplings on it made from rice paste. She has a PunnyName, too -- both her first and last names are dango toppings.

Her first appearance has her proctoring the Forest of Death section of the Chunin Exams.

In ''Shippuden'', she was tasked with tracking the movements of Kabuto. Just as the Fourth Shinobi World War started, she was attacked and defeated by Kabuto. Her Cursed Seal, though at first useless, proved instrumental in reviving her former master Orochimaru and finally freed Anko from its influence.

Years later during the epilogue, Anko has noticeably become chubbier due to all the sweets she loves consuming. This makes her best friends with Choji and Karui's daughter, Chocho.

->She likes conducting tea ceremonies as a hobby.
->Favorite phrase: "Calling on"
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the anime, she appears in the background during the Chūnin Exam recommendations alongside Ibiki.
* AdaptationExpansion: Her background is explained further in the [[{{Filler}} Kaima Capture Mission arc]], where it's revealed that she wasn't tossed aside by Orochimaru, but that she rejected him when he offered her the choice to tag along.
* {{Acrofatic}}: Even after her weight gain, she is still quite athletic, agile, and deadly.
* BadassLongcoat: Is seen wearing one whenever she appears.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: Anko was taught Orochimaru's snake techniques and is actually the first person seen using them in the series, but she is one of the good guys.
* BigEater: She ate at least 40 of dango in one sitting. Girl ''loves'' her dango. [[spoiler:Ends up making her quite overweight in the finale.]]
* BloodLust: Her first two scenes establish that she has a flair for the dramatic -- and a really creepy fascination with blood. As in, she cuts Naruto's cheek and then licks it off. Poor kid.
* BoisterousBruiser: She's outgoing and playful, but somewhat mischievous and rather hyperactive.
* BrokenPedestal: She was Orochimaru's student when the latter was still a Leaf Jonin, and she idolized him to the point of learning various snake techniques. When Orochimaru gave her a curse mark without her consent, she took it as a form of betrayal that she could not tolerate.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She's basically a female Naruto, except more studious -- hence why she's an Exam Procter. Ironically, Naruto himself is shown in the Land of the Sea arc to find her behavior extremely discomforting.
* DynamicEntry: That's how she first appeared.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Interrupted Ibiki Morino's part of the exam by breaking through the window. You can read the quote right at the top of her page; the rest of the class was understandably weirded out.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Pupil-less.
* FormerlyFit: The epilogue shows that she's gone to seed.
* GenkiGirl: Ibiki [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it when she first appears.
* HiddenDepths: Her hobby is conducting Tea Ceremonies.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Chocho Akimichi, due to their shared love of dango.
* IWasQuiteALooker: [[spoiler: She's gained a lot of weight in Boruto. Just compare her looks in Part 1/Shippuden and her Boruto designs and it's a night and day difference.]]
* TheLadette: Very much so, but with a more cocky, boisterous outlook.
* ManiacTongue: The [[{{Filler}} Kaima Capture Mission arc]] shows she adopted her mentor's habit of sticking her tongue out in a creepy manner.
* MeaningfulName: Mitarashi and Anko are dango toppings. Guess what her favorite food is.
* MomentKiller: Her boisterous entrance kills the contemplative, congratulatory feelings after everyone passed the first test. Ibiki calls her out on not reading the mood.
* MsFanservice: One of the most recognizable ones in this series to date.
* NeverGetsFat: {{Subverted|Trope}}; she enjoys sweets, particularly dango, and an omake page said that the number of calories she ate in a day would make anyone else fat. In the epilogue, which takes place over a decade after the ending of the series, she's gotten plump from continuing to eat sweets without going on so many missions.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She got really close to Naruto when they first met.
* OutOfFocus: She was used and betrayed by Orochimaru, so you might think she would get her revenge, right? Wrong, Sasuke got to him. Also, she seems like an interesting and dramatic character, so you might think they would explore her a bit more, right? WRONG, she's a side-character, and most of her supposedly genius skills, which made Orochimaru interested in her in the first place, are mostly obscured! When she discovered [[spoiler:Kabuto's hiding place, you might think she can do justice to her fame and defeat him, right? WRONG AGAIN! She is captured, bound, and has her Curse Mark power slowly drained by Kabuto]].
* PowerTattoos: Like Sasuke, she had the Cursed Seal of Heaven, though she lacked the will necessary to use it [[spoiler:and it was later removed by Sasuke to resurrect Orochimaru]].
* SexyMentor: She's technically a teacher, and she's sexy.
* SnakesAreSexy: Contrasting nicely with her mentor Orochimaru's evil snake motif.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Yeah, only a miniskirt, long coat, and wire mesh/chainmail covering from her neck down to her thighs. How her outfit manages to ''actually conceal anything'' is a mystery that really could only be explained by genjutsu.
* TheTease: Remember, she ''did'' scratch Naruto's face with a knife and licked the blood off his cheek. Also, her outfit is pretty distracting.
* ThereWasADoor: We first see her entering the testing room by smashing through a window.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Dango, of course, which even provides the inspiration for her name ("''mitarashi''" is a dango seasoning, as is "''anko''").
* VaporWear: Well, given her outfit, it seems like she's not wearing a bra.
* WiseSerpent: Her former sensei, Orochimaru, is a snake-themed ninja known for his cunning and brains. Anko, despite her boisterous personality, follows his lead. Other than having the snake summoning contract, she works in Konoha's Torture & Interrogation department, with her job being to extract information from prisoners. This means she's mastered mind games and psychology.
* YouTasteDelicious: Did this to Naruto once, twice in the anime.

The proctor for the preliminaries of the Third Chunin Exam, who is responsible for determining the winners for the fights and ending them when one person is unable to continue. He's a Tokubetsu Jonin who specializes in kenjutsu and is actually quite talented with clone techniques.

He stumbles upon Kabuto meeting with Baki to discuss the Sand Village participating in the invasion of Konoha, and Baki kills him for it. His lover Yūgao Uzuki finds his katana and swears to avenge him.

When the main match of the Third Exam begins, he is replaced by fellow jonin Genma Shiranui.

In {{Filler}} episodes, his spirit was brought back to fight for the bad guys as an Edo Tensei zombie, though he was ultimately put down and saved by his former lover and gave her the closure that they both needed.
----
* ArmorIsUseless: Surprisingly subverted, unfortunately for him -- Baki's flak jacket blocks his attack. This is one of the few moments in which the flak jackets actually do something.
* BackFromTheDead: In the Chikara anime-only arc, while Kabuto is still experimenting with Edo Tensei. He then shows up for a {{Filler}} episode in the war arc as one of Kabuto's zombies.
* HandicappedBadass: Implied -- he moves with ''astounding'' speed to stop Neji from killing Hinata, and Baki actually praises his skills and wonders whether all Konoha shinobi are this talented. However, Hayate's got the IncurableCoughOfDeath and looks like he's about to fall over.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: He was killed for spying on Kabuto and Baki's meeting.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Subverted because it's not the coughing that ultimately kills him.
* InformedAbility: Baki greatly praises Hayate before killing him, but this might be odd to the viewer upon noticing that all Hayate's attack did to Baki was barely wounding his shoulder through his flak jacket (which is never said to be anything more than a regular flak jacket, that is). That said, he was able to produce and control multiple shadow clones while simultaneously maneuvering himself behind Baki, which justifies a bit the praise even if it was of no use.
* {{Invisibility}}: In the anime, he uses the Transparent Escape Technique.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Wields a katana and is said to be skilled at kenjutsu, but loses his only fight. Baki, after all, wielded an ''air katana!''
* NiceGuy: In contrast to his predecessors, sadistic Ibiki and questionably together Anko, aside from the whole illness thing, Hayate seems like a pretty amiable guy when introducing himself to the genin finalists and remains professional when laying down the rules to the less-than-thrilled candidates, such as Kiba and Naruto.
* OutOfFocus: His introduction has him jumping down dramatically from the ceiling in order to ask fervently to be the proctor of the preliminaries. This, paired with his strangely sickly looks, seemed to imply he would be an important character with some secrets (for instance, why a ninja of his rank looks so ill, or why he wanted so badly to be the referee). However, he's killed unceremoniously after the matches and that's all his character amounts to. Both are justified though. It seems he asked to be proctor because it was the most he could do to be useful anymore and the same illness is what made him a good kill target making this more like misaimed {{Foreshadowing}} that didn't land correctly.
* SacrificialLamb: Pretty much his whole purpose; he's the first heroic character to die in the series.

->''"Trust me. You're pawns of Orochimaru and you don't want to mess with Konoha shinobi."''

The proctor for the third part of the Chunin Exams and a RecurringExtra Tokubetsu Jonin. Never seen without a senbon in his mouth, which he can utilize as a projectile weapon.

He takes over the Exams after Hayate is killed, and oversees the last couple of battles. When the Konoha Crush starts, he confronts Baki and protects Sasuke.

Later, when Sasuke leaves with the Sound Four, he follows them and fights the Four alongside fellow Tokubetsu Jonin Raido Namiashi, but is grievously wounded.

It's revealed much later that he was one of the Fourth Hokage's personal bodyguards alongside Iwashi Tatami and Raido, and as such the three of them can teleport. Another chapter reveals that, during his genin years, he formed a team with Might Guy and Ebisu. In the anime, their teacher was Choza Akimichi.

->His hobby is traveling.
->Favorite phrase: "No words, but action."
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: He's blonde in the manga but has brown hair in the anime.
* BulletSeed: He can spit the senbon in his mouth fast enough to deflect a kunai thrown by Sakon, the fastest and strongest of the Sound Four.
* {{Determinator}}: He was actually rooting for Naruto in the Chunin exams as he admired Naruto's victory because he never doubted himself. After Neji's defeat, Genma also tells him that even caged birds can eventually free themselves.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: His least favorite food is spinach.
* EarlyBirdCameo: He appears during the jōnin meeting following Hayate's death without any mention of his future role as the late proctor's replacement.
* GoodIsNotNice: He acts abrasive towards his fellow shinobi during Furido's attack, though given how thorough the enemies were in their invasive strategy and that many of their comrades had been led to their deaths by a younger shinobi's foolhardiness, its hard to blame him.
* InformedAttribute: Shikaku insists that he not throw any wisecracks at their [[WarIsHell situation]], but we've never seen Genma behave in any such way. Perhaps he did so in his younger days.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Has a somewhat similar appearance to Hayate -- they even wear their forehead protectors in a similar way.
%%* ThoseTwoGuys: Occasionally, with Raido.
* WonderTwinPowers: He can teleport -- as long as Iwashi and Raido are around to help.
* TheWorfEffect: Both the sender and the receiver. When battling the Sound Four, he gets beat up pretty badly. But the Sound Four only barely beat him, even with their Level 2 Cursed Seals. In other words, he (and Raido) were able to handle four prodigal Cursed Seal-wielding ninjas for a while.
* WorfHadTheFlu: In the Sound Four Fight, Genma and Raido are left badly wounded, but also cite that while they were Jonin, they were also coming off a mission and running low on Chakra during that fight. In short, they were skilled enough in theory to establish a "limit" for the Sound Four, but also handicapped enough that the Sound Four could win the fight and remain imposing.

Raido is a Tokubetsu Jonin who specializes in close-combat swordplay and assassination. He uses the Kokuto, a blade coated in poison.

He's also one of the Hokage's personal bodyguards; his first appearance is in the Third Hokage's box, acting as his bodyguard. He's taken out by Orochimaru before he can protect him, however.

In Shippuden, he's part of the team that backs up Asuma against Hidan and Kakuzu. He works together with Aoba to disrupt Kakuzu, allowing the others to escape.

->Favorite phrase: "Time is money."
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: He can be seen in a silent EarlyBirdCameo during the academy class's inauguration in episode three of the anime.
* ArmorIsUseless: His Chunin flak jacket did nothing to protect him from Orochimaru's kunai. Somewhat justified in that RealLife kevlar protective armor is bad at stopping piercing damage.
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: His Kokuto sword is black, not to mention that it literally translates to “Black Blade” in English.
* InformedAbility: It is stated he also specializes in assassinations. Obviously, we never see this, but we do see he is exceptionally skilled in stealth and close quarters.
* PoisonedWeapons: His signature weapon is the Kokuto, which has a coating of poison.
* RuggedScar: One of his most prominent traits.
* TemptingFate: Boasts to the Sound Four that he won't be taken by surprise like at the chūnin exams, but that didn't stop him and Genma from almost getting massacred by their Second Stage Cursed Seals.
%%* ThoseTwoGuys: Occasionally, with Genma.
* WonderTwinPowers: He can use the Flying Thunder God teleportation technique, as long as Iwashi and Genma are around to help.
* TheWorfEffect: Both the sender and the receiver. When battling the Sound Four, he gets beat up pretty badly. But the Sound Four only barely beat him, even with their Level 2 Cursed Seals. In other words, he and Genma were able to handle four prodigal Cursed Seal-wielding ninjas for some time.

Tsunade's first apprentice and her late fiancé Dan's niece. Travels along with her while trying to curb her gambling habits. After Tsunade becomes Hokage, she serves as her secretary. She's still serving as Hokage's secretary, now Naruto's.

She's a Jonin who specializes in healing and debilitating poisons. During the Sannin War, she helps fight Kabuto but is defeated. She also accompanied Genma, Raido, and Iwashi in hunting down the Sound Four, and provided medical help to Genma and Raido after they were grievously injured by the Four.

In ''Shippuden'', she begins to doubt Tsunade for sending Naruto out on dangerous missions despite Akatsuki's attempts to capture him but eventually regains faith in her. During the Pain Invasion, she helps those trying to decimate information from one of Pain's bodies and has her soul removed by Human path Pain, but is later resurrected. Later she is placed in charge of the Logistical Support and Medical Division for the Fourth Shinobi World War.

->Her hobby is visiting cultural heritage sites.
->Favorite phrase is "The flowers, the birds, the wind, and the Moon", an idiom of the beauty of nature.

* ACupAngst: An omake has her express envy towards Kurenei for her assets while they were drinking in a bar. She also gets offended when a supposedly amnesiac Sakura (who is actually a Sakura from a parallel universe) takes notice her small chest, given that her universe's Shizune is well-endowed.

* CoolBigSis: She often gives this vibe.
** Despite having just met [[BrattyHalfPint Naruto]], she helped him, took care of him when he collapsed from exhaustion and did her best to keep him safe during the battle between the Sannin. In Part II, her main objection to Naruto leaving the village was that if the Akatsuki found him, he'd be killed (while the elders were only worried about the Nine-Tails falling into enemy hands).
** She's this to Sakura, as shown by their multiple interactions and the respect Sakura has for her. In ''Naruto Gaiden'', [[spoiler:she takes care of Sakura after she fainted; also, Sarada seems to be quite close to her.]]

* NumberTwo: Shizune becomes the Hokage Assistant and Adviser for Tsunade.
* OlderThanTheyLook: In the Epilogue, set at least ten years after the war ended, she doesn't look like she aged at all. Hey, she ''was'' Tsunade's student, after all. Hell, even at the start of the series she looks like she's barely out of her teens when she's already 28 (a year older than Kakashi).
* OldMaid: In an omake, she drunkenly confesses that she's jealous of Kurenai for having a boyfriend and maybe even husband while she is too busy working for Tsunade to find one for herself. Unfortunately, Tsunade happens to hear it. HarsherInHindsight when you remember that this omake happens few episodes before said boyfriend dies, and the death had already happened in the manga.
* OnlyOneName: Despite a known surnamed relative, Shizune has only one name, like Tsunade (then again, Dan might've been her maternal uncle).
* RelativeButton: One of the two things that's certain to cause Shizune to lose her temper is when Tsunade is being insulted.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Tsunade, to the extent that she sees working under her as her purpose in life.

!!Previous Ino-Shika-Cho

The Nara clan, the Yamanaka clan, and the Akimichi clan have a long history together, with an Ino–Shika–Chō group formed once a generation with one member from each clan under the leadership of a member of the Sarutobi clan. The previous Ino–Shika–Chō are the fathers of the members of Team Asuma, teamed up in their younger days and continued working together even after passing the torch to their children. Together, they form the fifteenth generation of the Ino-Shika-Cho formation.
----
[[folder:In General]]
!!All provide examples of:
* ActionDad: All of them are the fathers to the next generation of Ino-Shika-Cho and can join a fight when necessary.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the anime, on the night before the competition, they make a quick appearance in a tavern complaining about the less pleasant parts of their family lives with Shikamaru coming to pick up his old man.
* AnimalMotifs: Shikaku (deer), Inoichi (boar), and Choza (butterfly).
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: A male example. Inoichi is the blond, Shikaku is the dark-haired one, and Choza is the redhead.
* CombinationAttack: Like their children and grandchildren, the various Ino-Shika-Cho formations require each member to use their respective clan Hiden techniques together.
* GenerationXerox: Shikaku looks almost ''exactly'' like his son, albeit with more scars and facial hair. Similarly, his relationship with Choza and Inoichi is a copy of the past ''14'' generations of their three families (and their own children make 16). Inoichi is a [[GenderFlip genderflipped]] example; had Ino been a male, he would look like a younger Inoichi; Choza, meanwhile, looks like a larger, more masculine, red-haired version of Choji, albeit with different facial markings and eyes that are nearly [[EyesAlwaysShut always shut]].
* GoodParents: All three of them have good relationships with their kids.
* RedOniBlueOni: Maybe not as much as their sons, but Choza and Shikaku display traits of this. Shikaku might not wear blue, but he's generally calm, fiercely intelligent, a respected and trusted strategist, and a long-range fighter. Choza, meanwhile, is the most physical of the trio [[spoiler:(and in the Fourth Shinobi World War, he's the only one on the frontlines)]], fights at close to mid-range, and although he's not as emotional as his son, he has his moments. Not to mention he has the appropriate hair color.
* SacrificialLion: As of Chapter 613, [[spoiler:Choza is the only member of the trio left]].

!!The Hyuga Clan

The Hyūga Clan is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure. All members born into this clan possess the Byakugan, a kekkei genkai that gives them extended fields of vision and the ability to see through solid objects and even the chakra circulatory system, amongst other things. Members of this clan also possess the unique ability to expel chakra from any of the tenketsu in their bodies.
----
[[folder:In General]]
!!All provide examples of:
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the manga, everyone in the Hyuga clan has large pupil-less white eyes[[note]]"Byakugan" literally means "white eye"[[/note]], which are depicted as pale lavender in the anime. This also extends to every other Byakugan, with very few exceptions.
* AlliterativeName: It's very common among the Hyuga clan for its members to have given names that begin with "H".
* AuraVision: The Byakugan can see chakra.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: There is infighting within the clan's Branch Family and Main Family though they are ultimately all bound together in a strong sense of duty and pride. Though compared to the Uchiha, they aren't nearly as screwed up, especially with the truth of [[spoiler:the Uchiha Massacre]]. By the time of the ''Boruto'' series their more screwed up practices appear to have reformed substantially, with curse marks no longer used on Branch Family members (and indeed the Branch Family system itself may have been abandoned).
* CloseRangeCombatant: The Hyūga Clan’s Gentle Fist generally revolve around close-range combat, making active shinobi from this clan this.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Pupil-less white eyes.
* FamilyEyeResemblance: All members of the Hyuga Clan have white eyes with no pupils.
* HufflepuffHouse:
** The Hyuga are an extensive, powerful, and important family in Konoha, but you wouldn't know it to look at them. The Uchiha clan never has more than [[spoiler:three members]] during the present story, and it still has more influence over everyone and everything in the setting than the Hyuga clan does. Their Byakugan was part of the "Three Great Dojutsu" along with the Sharingan and Rinnegan, and in Chapter 78 Kakashi stated that the Byakugan surpasses the Sharingan in regards to perception abilities, but thanks to the Sharingan gaining about five thousand new abilities since this was brought up (including the fact that [[spoiler:the Rinnegan is just a powered-up Sharingan]]), it has had no relevance to the story beyond [[ThisLooksLikeAJobForAquaman a one-time use by Neji to find Gaara after Deidara kidnapped him]].
** In the final arc, it is revealed that [[spoiler:Kaguya]] possessed the Byakugan. However, it appears that this was only done to tie the Byakugan into the other two Dojutsu, with [[spoiler:Hamura]] establishing the origins of the Hyuga clan. Beyond that, and the fact [[spoiler:Black Zetsu's plot]] did not involve the Hyuga in any shape or form, still leaves the Hyuga as this trope.
** The {{canon}} movie ''The Last'' starts to remedy this by making a Hyuga (Hinata) as the main female lead, establishing that the Byakugan has its own upgraded form [[spoiler:the Tenseigan)]], and having [[spoiler:Hamura himself]] appear to [[spoiler:bestow his power to Hinata]]. Lastly, in a reversal to the above, the Uchiha are reduced to mere cameos.
** The SequelSeries, ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'', further remedies this by having Himawari activate her Byakugan at age 4 without any prior training and accessing to it again by age 10, making her Hyuga blood a huge part of her characterization. As for Boruto, he was able to see a manifestation of a dying Momoshiki thanks to his Hyuuga heritage.
* KimonoIsTraditional: As many members will tell you, the Hyugga are an illustrious clan with a long history in the Hidden Leaf village. So a standard outfit for every member of the clan we see is a plain kimono unless they are in uniform or training.
* MagicalEye: The Hyuga can use the Byakugan, a Dōjutsu that grants a near-360º telescopic XRayVision, allowing the user to perceive everything around them and see chakra points on a ninja. It also allows the user to easily see through illusions.
* PowerPalms: The Gentle Fist style typically focuses on striking the opponent with the palm.
* PressurePoint: The point of the Gentle Fist style is to target these, enhanced with chakra to potentially deadly effect.
* PraetorianGuard: The Branch Family who are sworn by their lives to protect the Main Family who governs the clan.
* ProphetEyes: Inverted with Byakugan. Though their eyes are blank white, they are not blind. Just the opposite, as the Byakugan greatly enhances their vision.
* SupernaturalMartialArts: The Gentle Fist is a form of hand-to-hand combat used by members of the Hyuga clan. It inflicts internal damage through attacking the body's Chakra Pathway System, subsequently injuring organs which are closely intertwined with the area of the network which has been struck. To do this, the user surgically injects a certain amount of their own chakra into the opponent's chakra pathway system, causing damage to surrounding organs due to their proximity to the chakra circulatory system. Even the slightest tap can cause severe internal damage, hence the name "gentle" fist. By employing the use of the Byakugan, an experienced user can target the tenketsu, thus enhancing the havoc and control a Gentle Fist practitioner can impose upon an opponent's chakra network.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: All the SupernaturalMartialArts and MagicalEye abilities are granted by these. ''The Last'' reveals that [[spoiler:all Main Family members inherit their chakra from their ancestor Hamura]].
* SuperSenses: The Byakugan grants the user a nearly 360-degree vision and telescopic view.
* TouchOfDeath: The idea behind the Gentle Fist style, using precisely aimed hits to shoot destructive chakra bursts into the interior of an opponent's body. It's all the more effective since no amount of regular training can make your internal organs more resistant to damage.
* TrueSight: The Byakugan has the ability to pierce through visually anything, like disabling techniques and illusions. Only few materials can prevent this.
* UnderdogsNeverLose: Despite the HufflepuffHouse trope, by the end of the ''Naruto'' series, the Hyuga are notably the only clan descended from Kaguya Otsutsuki still active and flourishing to the present. The Uzumaki have only Naruto, his children, and Karin left (plus Tsunade if you count 2nd generation descendants); the Uchiha have Sasuke and Sarada; Tsunade makes up the sole surviving remnant of the Senju (and she's only a descendant, not a full member); the Otsutsuki's last member, Toneri, is floating somewhere on the Moon; and the Kaguya clan is extinct. It is later revealed that the Otsutsuki have other living members, but that doesn't change the fact that Toneri is the only one both carrying the Otsutsuki name ''and'' directly descended from Kaguya. In stark contrast, the Hyuga has eleven living named members (including Boruto and Himawari), plus dozens of other unnamed ones. By the time of ''Boruto'' their clan is still doing well and in fact has reformed their questionable practices. Getting out of the spotlight isn't necessarily bad.
* VeinOVision: The Byakugan can see the chakra network and identify chakra points (spots in the chakra network that can, when struck, temporarily cut off chakra flow to parts of the body).
* XRayVision: The Byakugan can see through solid objects.

Hiashi Hyūga (日向ヒアシ, Hyūga Hiashi) is the head of the Hyūga clan. He is also the father of Hinata and Hanabi Hyūga, as well as the older twin brother of the late Hizashi Hyūga, and the paternal uncle of Neji Hyuga. Born as the eldest of the twin sons of the former leader, the ruthless traditions of the clan and a tragedy that happened later would make him very, ''very'' bitter...

In the Fourth Shinobi World War, he is placed in the First Division alongside Darui, Choza Akimichi, and Tenten, and ends up having to fight his brother, who has been brought back as a zombie via Edo Tensei.

Appears again in ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'', trying to fight the film's villain Toneri but ultimately loses. He is saved by Sasuke and it is due to his pleading to Kakashi that his daughters and Naruto's team were saved from vaporization while they were on the moon. Later becomes a grandfather to Hinata's children, Boruto and Himawari.

* ActionDad: As the 20 Suna and Oto ninja he wrecks with a gigantic Rotation can attest to. Even earlier, he killed with a single strike a Kumo ninja who attempted to kidnap Hinata. In the Fourth Ninja War, he enters the Ninja Alliance alongside his daughter.
* AintTooProudToBeg: When it came to gaining Neji's forgiveness.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: A grandparent example. Old Hiashi is completely doting towards his grandson and especially his granddaughter, to the point that Boruto cannot imagine him as a strict person. In ''Naruto Shinden'', his attempt to buy rare cards for Boruto leads him to personally ask Naruto, his son-in-law and ''the Hokage himself'' for a mission in spite of his age, only to accidentally inflict Eight Trigrams 64 Palms on the mission's client, whom he mistakenly thinks is the target. Later, he is caught by Shino playing dirty to get the cards, and yet he walks out unashamedly. You can practically hear Hinata's and Hanabi's collective facepalm as they accompany their father during this all.

* BigBrotherBully: What Neji viewed him as in relation to Hizashi.
* CainAndAbel: With his twin younger brother Hizashi, due to the inner politics of the Hyuga clan. Subverted later.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: He's the head of the Hyuga clan's main family (of Konoha's upper class) and, when we first meet him, he appears to be a very strict, stern-looking man and a WellDoneDaughterGirl for his daughter Hinata. However, it's later revealed that he's been carrying around ''massive'' inner grief for the HeroicSacrifice pulled nine years earlier by his twin brother (who was delegated into the clan's branch family because Hiashi was born first) and the rift between both sides of the clan exacerbated by such terrible circumstances.

* CrackOhMyBack: By the events of ''Boruto'', Hiashi is suffering from back problems. When he challenges Boruto for a spar, Hanabi immediately volunteers to replace him, partly to prevent Hiashi from going all out, partly to spare his back from giving way.
* ADayInTheLimelight: He gets one in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime, where it is revealed the extent of his change, and where he also shows that he can still be intimidating, despite his age and newfound peace.
* DistressedDude: In ''The Last'', [[spoiler:an encounter with Toneri left him very injured and was rescued by Sasuke days later, to be brought back to the village for treatment]].
* DotingGrandparent: In the sequel, Hiashi adores his two grandchildren, Boruto and Himawari, and dotes on them, in part to compensate for the strict upbringing he imposed on their mother.
* EvilUncle: What Neji originally saw him as, until he learned the truth about his father's death.
* GeometricMagic: Is in charge of the Caged Bird Seal.
* HeartbrokenBadass: Heavily implied that his wife suddenly passed away after the birth of Hanabi (she's shown in a brief flashback of Episode 166 in ''Shippuden'' holding baby Hanabi while Hinata is barely older than a toddler) not long before the Cloud coup took place, which caused him to go sour and start mistreating his daughters.

* KneelBeforeFrodo: Goes on his knees and begs for Neji's forgiveness when he tells him the truth over his father's death.
* LethalHarmlessPowers: His Kaiten (a defensive spinning technique) can send the attackers flying with lethal force.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** Had he been truthful earlier, Neji would've likely been somewhat less of a bitter {{Jerkass}}... Though, on the other hand, had he told Neji, the other main branch members may have revolted. His father was already willing to throw Hiashi under the bus for peace with the Cloud Village. A young Neji could have gotten more bitter thinking that not even Hiashi could fix the system and campaigned openly against it (smearing the family reputation). It's never confirmed whether it was pragmatism or regret and guilt that kept him quiet.
** Even though the Cloud likely started the incident by having its Head Ninja try to kidnap the three-year-old Hinata while she was asleep, Hiashi killing the kidnapper instead of simply knocking him out to use as a political prisoner allows the Cloud to deny all accusations of the kidnapping and demand the body of Hiashi as compensation for the death of their Head Ninja, as per the stipulations of the treaty. This plays a part in Hizashi Hyūga deciding to go and die in his brother's place, as they were twins, and Kumogakure could not tell the difference while protecting the Hyuga's head and their secrets.
* NotSoStoic: When he tells Neji what truly happened with Hizashi.
* OldMaster: By ''Boruto.'' He's still widely regarded as the most powerful shinobi of the Hyuga clan despite his back problems.
* PapaWolf: He did kill that Cloud Ninja who attempted to capture Hinata.
* ParentalFavoritism: Hinata's perceived incompetence compared to Hanabi results in a rather heavy case of this. This ends when Hinata becomes a very skilled kunoichi.
* ParentsAsPeople: He was an ass, no questions about it, especially towards Hinata, but the situation that led him to be an ass wasn't exactly easy. And as said before, things gets way better later.
** This is shown when he killed the Cloud Ninja. While no sane man would blame him for his actions, the difference in power between the two ninja was so great that Hiashi could have easily knocked the guy out and used him as a political prisoner. This action caused his father to try to sell one of kids' lives for peace. From then on, Hiashi acted much more like politician than a father and an uncle, going too far in the other direction. He became more like his own AbusiveDad. It's only after he saw how bitter and broken Neji was that he broke down and apologized to Neji.
* PerpetualFrowner: His default expression is a stern frown. As of the sequel, he has grown softer and smiles more, especially around his grandchildren.
* PoseOfSupplication: Combined with him being AintTooProudToBeg, this is what convinces Neji that Hiashi is telling the truth regarding Hizashi's death. That ThePatriarch of the clan is willing to bow to a branch house is unthinkable, especially since said branch member's bitterness towards the main clan is taken into accpunt.
* ScrewDestiny: What he tells to the Edo-tensei-revived!Hizashi in Chapter 526.
* SecretKeeper: Hid what truly happened with Hizashi, in the hopes to tell Neji when he was OlderAndWiser. [[JustifiedTrope Then again]], if he had been truthful from the start, Neji wouldn't have believed him at first; in the manga (when Hizashi didn't leave a letter behind), Neji tells him that the story sounds convenient, and Hiashi says he wanted to wait until he could listen to him as an uncle rather than as head of the family
* TheStoic: In his younger years he wasn't a very expressive individual.
* SuperMode: Gains a chakra cloak from Naruto that greatly increases his power.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's a tall and handsome man with dark brown hair.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: When he sees wooden spikes heading toward Hinata and Naruto, with neither Hinata nor Neji able to knock them out of the air. Neji manages to block them... [[TakingTheBullet with his body]].
* TookALevelInKindness:
** With Neji -- Hiashi decided to make amends with his nephew and openly chose to train Neji in the Hyūga clan's full arts. Also, as this was considered a taboo to pass down secret techniques to the Branch House, this showed Hiashi to have become much more lenient and is not as strictly devoted to traditions, now desiring to end the rift within the clan, thus somewhat merging the two houses.
** With Hinata -- He began to treat her better after the Chunin Exams arc, he openly applauded her for trying to fight Pain, he allowed her to participate in the Fourth Shinobi World War, and he did not stop her from helping him and Neji protect Naruto during the fight against Obito and Madara.
** By the New Era, he seems to have lightened up considerably, as he enjoys doting on his grandchildren and seems to be on excellent terms with his son-in-law. Boruto and Himawari are actually disbelieving when Naruto and Hinata tell them that Hiashi used to be much meaner.
* TraumaCongaLine: It's downplayed and OutOfFocus compared to other examples, but on closer examination one can tell that Hiashi has lived a very difficult life. He and his twin brother's relationship was constantly strained due to the latter being forced into the Branch House simply for being born after him. His daughter was nearly kidnapped by a rival village when she was three years old, and that same brother chose to take his place and die to prevent a war with said village, which caused an immense rift in his immediate family that he was unable to bridge for ''years''. Even after finally fixing that mess, his nephew, the last piece he had of his brother, dies protecting Naruto and Hinata. Two years later, he's attacked by a distant relative who wants to destroy the world, and tries to achieve that by kidnapping both of Hiashi's daughters, one to take the eyes of, the other to forcibly marry so they can repopulate the Earth with their descendants. All Hiashi can do in the end is beg Kakashi not to let the moon be destroyed so Hinata and Hanabi can be saved. It's implied that all these experiences are why Hiashi is a much warmer person in the New Era, as he no longer wants his remaining family to suffer the pain of such distance ever again.
* TroubledAbuser: When the Cloud Village brought an ultimatum for the Hyuga to hand over Hiashi, his father had no second thoughts about sacrificing his heir for it. Hizashi volunteered to protect Hiashi and sacrificed his life for him. This influenced Hiashi to be strict and emotionally distant towards Hinata as she grew up.

Twin younger brother of Hiashi, and a member of the branch house. Very, ''very'' bitter towards his older twin because of that, and presumed to have been sacrificed for Hiashi after a terrible incident. Things weren't so black and white in the end: Hizashi willingly sacrificed himself for his brother, as his way to ScrewDestiny.

Resurrected by Kabuto via Edo Tensei and fought Hiashi himself before being sealed away.
----
* AbusiveParents: It's revealed in the [[AllThereInTheManual databooks]] the Hyuga Elder who he conspired with to be killed in his brother's place was Hiashi and Hizashi's father.
* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: In the anime, when he was resurrected during the Fourth Shinobi WarArc, he's shown using the Revolving Heaven technique, despite it being stated to be exclusive to the Hyūga Clan Head and its heir, neither of which Hizashi was in life.
* BackFromTheDead: Kabuto resurrects him with Edo Tensei and makes him fight his brother.
* CainAndAbel: With his twin older brother Hiashi, due to the inner politics of the Hyuga clan. Subverted later: he ''was'' bitter, but deep down still cared.
* FacialMarkings: The branch house mark on his forehead. Also, a sort-of leash on him, as it can be activated and cause him horrible pain if he's suspected of being rebellious.
* GenerationXerox: [[spoiler:Neji also dies protecting a Main Family member, and his last thoughts are addressing his father, realizing what it means to choose death for your comrades]].

Hinata's younger sister. A dutiful ninja who bears the weight of the clan on her shoulders. She loves and admires her older sister very much and the feeling is mutual. Later becomes the leader of Team 15 in the Boruto anime, in addition to her duties as heiress of the clan.

->Her hobby is training with her father.
----
* AdaptationExpansion: Hanabi gets more screen-time in the anime.
* AscendedExtra:
** Not to the extent of her older sister, but starting with The Last, she gets some actual importance in the plot.
** In the Boruto anime, she has become a Jounin, is the leader of a ninja team (In which there's also Sumire Kakei, she herself an AscendedExtra) and appears more often than in the past.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: An aunt example. She acts just like her father when she's around her nephew and niece in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime.
* BecauseDestinySaysSo: Much of the reason why she trains so much is that she's told she's destined to be the clan head instead of Hinata, which puts a huge burden on her to live up to expectations.
* BigLittleSister: She's five years younger than Hinata. As adults in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime, Hanabi is 170 cm (5'7") while Hinata is 163 cm (5'4").
* BigSisterWorship: Hanabi idolizes and deeply loves her elder sister, Hinata.
* BrokenPedestal: Hanabi [[{{Oneesama}} adores and idolizes her sister]] but her confidence in her was shaken when she defeated her in a match to determine which of the sisters would be their father's successor. [[RebuiltPedestal She later realizes]] her sister was never as weak [[{{Determinator}} as she appeared]].
* CantHoldHerLiquor: After a few drinks, Hanabi gets ''hammered'' when she sits down with Konohamaru, Moegi, Udon and Shino in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime.
* CharacterDevelopment: She gets very little attention in the original manga, but gets a ''lot'' of development in the two-part anime special focused on her.
* CoolAunt: She's this with her nephew and niece in the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime, as she's playful with them and also gives her nephew helpful advice.
* DamselInDistress: In ''The Last'', Toneri kidnaps her as part of his plan to possess the Tenseigan, but she's rescued by her sister and others.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Hanabi gets a two-part special in the anime as an interlude to the plot of ''The Last'', exploring the relationship between her and her sister.
* EyeScream: Toneri steals her eyes so he can use them to activate the Tenseigan after marrying her sister, but Hinata gets them back for her.
* HeiressToTheDojo: Hiashi passed Hinata over and named Hanabi his heir apparent.
* HiddenBuxom: It's not obvious due to her outfit, but she's shown to be quite well-endowed as an adult.
* InformedAbility: Hanabi was ''said'' to be stronger than Hinata, but as adults, Hinata proves otherwise. In the light novel ''Naruto Shinden: Parent and Child Day'', Hanabi expects to win in a duel against Hinata because the latter has been a housewife for the last decade and hasn't gone out on missions in years. However, Hinata has been training Boruto throughout the years, so she's able to go toe-to-toe with Hanabi, and in the end she quickly defeats Hanabi.
* MentorArchetype: Team 15 (Sumire, Namida and Wasabi - and later, Tsubaki)'s teacher in the New Era.
* MissingMom: The reason why her and Hinata’s mother doesn’t appear in the main story itself has never been touched upon.
* PlayfulCatSmile: Rather unexpectedly sports one when she's gently teasing Hinata about her hesitation to give [[RedStringOfFate her red scarf]] to Naruto at the start of ''The Last.''
* SatelliteCharacter: Only appeared three times in the manga, twice with her father and once with Neji in Hinata's Infinite Tsukuyomi dream. [[AdaptationExpansion She has a much bigger role in the anime]].
** Her characters gets more attention starting with The Last, and in the New Era, [[SubvertedTrope she is no longer this]], as she has her own team to watch over, and appears more often than in the past, and only a couple of these appearences have her next to her father.
* ScrewDestiny: After seeing Hinata get stronger and stronger, despite being called a failure and yet remaining the kind, gentle person she knew, she's determined to be just like her sister and find her own path.
* ShipperOnDeck: ''The Last'' shows that she is supportive of Hinata's feelings for Naruto.
* SiblingRivalry: With Hinata. However, [[OneeSama she has great respect for her sister]], scoffing at the idea of Neji being stronger than her.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Hanabi takes after her father the most.
* StrongerSibling: Is considered this to Hinata, although this is mainly due to the latter’s [[ShrinkingViolet immense shyness]] and unwillingness to harm others, which ultimately resulted in Hanabi becoming Heiress.
%%* SugarAndIcePersonality
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Her personality is drastically different after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, with ''The Last'' showing her becoming much more easygoing, cheerfully teasing her sister, and even hanging a small doll on a kunai. [[AllThereInTheManual The novelization]] notes that "something inside of her changed" since [[spoiler:the death of her cousin Neji]].
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse:
** Doesn't make any canonical appearance in the manga after the TimeSkip, until during Hinata's Infinite Tsukuyomi-induced dream.
** On the other hand, a post-TimeSkip version of her designed by Kishimoto does show up in the non-canon spin-off ''Manga/RockLeesSpringtimeOfYouth''. She also makes her way into canon expansion packs during the run of the anime that inserts her into the events of previous moments retroactively.
** Hanabi finally reappears in ''The Last'', where she is kidnapped by [[BigBad Toneri]], and appears again in the ''Boruto'' anime and light novels.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Like her older sister, but in different ways. Hinata is more about humility and developing the core of steel, while Hanabi is more about obedience to her elders. She grows out of this after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, becoming more of a GenkiGirl instead.

!!The Nara Clan
Other than their pineapple-shaped hairdo, Nara clan members can be recognized by their capacity to think several steps ahead, particularly, when strategizing during a battle or playing ''TabletopGame/{{Shogi}}''; as well as their Shadow Release techniques.

* HollywoodBoardGames: The Nara Clan is characterized by being BrilliantButLazy. This is conveyed by the fact its members enjoy playing ''Shogi'' --a slow-paced strategy game usually played by smart old men with nothing better to do. It also serves as a nice father-son bonding activity for two generations of Nara: Shikaku and his son Shikamaru and, in ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'', Shikamaru with his son Shikadai. Mizuki is a childhood friend and was a former fellow Ninja Academy instructor of Iruka Umino. He later becomes the first antagonist of the series. At the series' start, he tricked Naruto Uzumaki into stealing Konoha's Scroll of Seals, which contains a number of forbidden jutsu. He convinced Naruto to do it by appearing sympathetic towards him, and told him that it would help him graduate from the Academy, but, in actuality, he despised Naruto. While he intended to steal the scroll from Naruto and to use Naruto as a scapegoat in the meantime, Iruka eventually figured out what he was up to and quickly caught up with Naruto and Mizuki. Realizing that it would be harder to get the scroll from Naruto if he teamed up with Iruka, he decided that he had to get Naruto to not trust Iruka. Mizuki then revealed to Naruto the truth about his past and why the village despised him: that he is the container for the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox.

As Naruto was frozen in shock by this knowledge, Mizuki used this to his advantage by hurling a giant shuriken at the frightened Naruto. Iruka jumped in at the last second to block the shuriken with his own back, wounding him. Later, because of Iruka's kind, caring words and selfless action, Naruto had the courage to use the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique he had learned from the scroll to defeat Mizuki as punishment for harming Iruka, which inevitably greatened Mizuki's hatred for Naruto.

Mizuki returned in the anime, not long after Sasuke Uchiha's defection, freshly broken out from the Konoha Strict Correctional Facility with the aid of fellow inmates and intended to go to Otogakure, the Village Hidden in the Sound, and seek power from Orochimaru. Before he got too far, he had a run-in with Iruka and Naruto again, at whom the man was all too eager to exact his vengeance. While his newly found strength gave him some better threat credibility, drinking an unstable formula he had previously received from Orochimaru caused him to lose precious speed when he transformed into a tiger-esque beast and was left vulnerable to a Rasengan courtesy of Naruto. His newly found form shriveled into a grotesque elderly husk after which he lost all his capabilities as a shinobi, being returned to prison and never heard from again.

->Favorite phrase: "Positive thinking"
----
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: There's nothing to suggest that he and Iruka are anything besides fellow teachers in the manga that ended up enemies due to the circumstances at play. Hell, Iruka calls the former a scumbag in the original version without a hint of pathos in his tone. During the Mizuki Strikes Back arc, however, they're mentioned to have been friends since their boyhood (at least from Iruka's point of view) with the latter showing plenty of angst and eventually, resignation over Mizuki's downfall.
* AdaptationalBadass: He shows proficiency in manually wielding giant shuriken during his original appearance but not much beyond that, with later comments by Ebisu and Kakashi implying that he was one of their weaker shinobi. His return in the filler showcases that even before his time in jail, Mizuki was a multi-talented ninja with skills such as [[DishingOutDirt Earth Release]] and basic [[MarionetteMaster puppet jutsu]]. He's also shown to have a, albeit flawed, prototype Cursed Seal that's initial stage can give Naruto and Iruka a run for their money.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Coupled with subverted AdaptationalHeroism; as bad as Mizuki was at the beginning of the series, at least his manga counterpart was never inferred to be in league with the likes of [[BigBad Orochimaru]]. The heroism comes from his having a fiance which was never implied in the manga but subverted when it becomes clear his love of power and glory have long surpassed anything he might have once held for her.
* AlasPoorVillain: Iruka and Tsubaki, plus Tsunade, all pity him a little for being crippled by the potion that ultimately robbed him of all his abilities as a shinobi, though Iruka at least tells him off for thinking he'd heal enough to ever face Naruto again.
* AlmightyJanitor: His official rank was that of a chūnin but with his talents, he could've made jōnin easy if not for his twisted philosophy and deliberate lack of morals holding him back.
* AmbitionIsEvil: His desire for greatness is all-consuming from his stealing of the Sacred Scroll, which he intended to offer to [[BigBad Orochimaru]], to wanting to get his hands on the Sannin's power so he could destroy Konohagakure for "rejecting" his efforts as a shinobi.
* ArcVillain: The main antagonist of the "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Mizuki Strikes Back]]" anime {{Filler}} arc.
* AscendedExtra: He appears only once in the manga in the opening chapter and vanishes from the plot afterward beyond the rare flashback going back to that moment. The anime gives him a filler arc, the second in an infamously long stretch of pre-''Shippūden'' fillers, which expanded his character and relationship with Iruka, showcases what makes him so detestable, and retcons his stealing the Sacred Scroll to be used as an offering for Orochimaru.
* AssholeVictim: In spite of Iruka, Tsubaki, and Tsunade's [[AlasPoorVillain sympathies,]] Mizuki was very much an evil man who deserved his fate for not taking his so-called friend's offers of redemption while he could and crippled himself by taking that potion of which Orochimaru knew was flawed anyway, robbing him of any possible future as a ninja.
* AxCrazy: He showed signs of it in his original appearance, but by the time of his return he's long since stopped pretending. He takes a disturbing amount of pleasure in stating his desire to crush Iruka and Naruto for his previous defeat and his transformation into a tiger-man only makes him more crazed.
* BaitTheDog: Until Naruto steals the scroll, nothing seems off about him.
* BerserkButton: Not being given his dues is his biggest pet peeve...in spite of the fact that his own sadism and unwillingness to cherish anything but his own rise keep making it that nobody will ever grant him that validation.
* BeyondRedemption: Iruka tries to get him to face up to what he's done during his breakout, [[RedemptionRejection but Mizuki isn't having any of it,]] seeing Konoha as beneath him and no longer interested in earning their respect. Iruka resigns himself and has to accept that there's no hope for the man he once called a friend. Poor Tsubaki comes to this conclusion after the battle with her resolving to start her life anew beyond her ex-lover.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He seemed kind towards Naruto at first, then drops the act when the Scroll of Seals is in grasp. The anime later shows that he was always this way towards Iruka, faking a friendship with him to mooch off others' sympathies and gaining popularity.
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:Tsunade saves him after he's defeated, but the damage his body suffered will prevent him from ever being a shinobi again.]]
* ClippedWingAngel: The second stage of his prototype Cursed Seal is proven to be dangerous for the user as it destroys the cells upon activation. There's a decrease in speed it demands in exchange for greater power, which enables Iruka and Naruto to entrap and defeat him.
* TheCorrupter: He attempts to manipulate Naruto into stealing the Hokage's scroll.
* DishingOutDirt: He's shown to know Earth Release in his filler arc.
* DrivenByEnvy: Towards Iruka, since he envied the positive attention his childhood friend received.
* EnfantTerrible: When he was twelve, Mizuki was already very much a bad seed. His jealousy of Iruka stealing attention away from him really had no basis other than the fact that he didn't care for it and seeing Hiruzen comfort him only made him more irritated. So he played the part of the good friend to Iruka just so he could get in on the Hokage's attention. Given the subtle DeathGlare that Hiruzen was giving as the two "friends" ran off, it is unlikely he fell for it.
* EvilCounterpart: To Iruka. They are both introduced as potential mentor-figures for Naruto, but where Iruka genuinely wants what's best for Naruto, Mizuki is just manipulating him to suit his own ends.
* EvilIsPetty: Read all the other tropes related to his StartOfDarkness and you'll begin to see what a vindictive and psychotic bastard he truly is. Pretending to be Iruka's friend while secretly using him for popularity and instant gratification, holding it against Iruka for passing while he didn't for an incident he knew full well was wrong even when he got the position anyway and seemingly being the only one left in the Leaf who legitimately hates Naruto even after the boy proved to most that he wasn't the abomination they all believed him to be. Hell, his defeat by Naruto's hands only made him hate the latter all the more.
* FalseFriend: To Iruka, according to the anime. The manga doesn't imply that they're anything more than fellow teachers.
* FatalFlaw: Envy due to Iruka earning a teaching position before him, wrath for wanting to destroy the village that he feels never gave him the recognition he rightly didn't deserve, and pride in his abilities thinking that an "upstart genin" like Naruto could never compete with him.
* {{Foil}}: The anime makes him out as one to Sasuke. Say what you want about Sasuke's choices, at least his StartOfDarkness was presented sympathetically and was gradually revealed to been manipulated by powers beyond his control or reasonability at the time. Mizuki, on the other hand, fostered his resentment off of basically "This kid (Iruka) is getting more attention than me, so I'll leech off that popularity while secretly making his life suck." And it doesn't stop there. Mizuki's issues revolve solely around not getting the recognition he feels he deserved for carrying out his missions whereas Sasuke had popularity from several of his agemates from the getgo but was indifferent to it due to his focusing on vengeance.
* ForTheEvulz: Unless you [[UnreliableNarrator actually buy his idea]] that it was some kind of MercyKill or that it was [[IDidWhatIHadToDo necessary for the mission]], his killing a comrade chūnin in a flashback is this. He didn't seem to have any reason to do it, and it even screwed him over later.
* HateSink: For goodness sake, the man's least favorite food is ''ramen''! How much more offensive to Naruto could he possibly be? On a more serious note, Mizuki is one of the very few characters who can't really elicit ''any'' sympathy from the audience, even if he's overshadowed by the more major villains because of his motivations and goals which are so petty in comparison. Even Orochimaru had a tragic StartOfDarkness that took many years to be completed, whereas Mizuki was heavily implied to be an inherent bad seed. The anime filler makes him even more loathsome by revealing that his past friendship with Iruka was motivated by selfishness, not to mention being an absolute scumbag to his girlfriend despite her devotion to him.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The {{Filler}} stated he was in cahoots with Orochimaru who gave him a recipe for a potion that would increase his chakra. It did, giving him a humanoid tiger appearance and he bats Naruto and Iruka around a bit. But after the two manage to beat him, the potion turns him into a withered old man as it was highly unstable. Tsunade surmises that Mizuki was just another test subject for Orochimaru meaning he got screwed over twice. What's more, he can no longer be a ninja now due to it. And for a real kick in the teeth, Iruka tells Mizuki that Naruto far surpasses him in terms of strength.
** This happens to him in his flashback as well. He and a comrade decided to leave the third member of their team for dead during a code-retrieval mission. However, Mizuki hung back and killed the guy himself, thinking it a fitting fate for someone "weak enough" to get injured while fleeing from the enemy. Because of this, he was initially denied an academy teaching post due to the Hokage and other jōnin suspecting he had unnecessarily killed a comrade. Being denied that post seemed to be the last straw in his hate for Iruka.
** Heck this goes back all the way back to the first chapter when he tricked Naruto into stealing the scroll (the {{Filler}} revealing he was trying to give it to Orochimaru). He assumed he could easily take it from Naruto just for his amateur rank. Not only does that not happen, but Naruto also manages ''to figure the scroll's power and beats him silly with it''. Said power would later become a trademark of Naruto's which he only got better with over time.
* HulkingOut: His Cursed Seal's first form causes him to beef up and become slightly feral.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Most if not all his claims that Konoha never gave him his dues fall flat considering how he blatantly disregarded the teachings of the village he was born in. He claims that killing his comrade during a mission was his only choice when he could've simply carried the man away on his back since the enemy gave him enough time to do what he did instead: suffocate the poor guy with him gleefully mocking the fallen man for being stupid enough to get injured in the first place. As a side effect of that pointless act of sadism, he was initially denied the spot of an academy teacher which fully solidified his resentment of Iruka, and possibly including the Hokage, in spite of the fact that he later got the position anyway as seen at the beginning of the series (the fact that he blamed Iruka for it period shows a clear skew of priorities). He saw things such as friendship and morality as nothing more than a distraction from true glory and that to do otherwise is resigning yourself to never realize your true potential. All of this despite the man growing up in a village that currently believes that bringing all your comrades home safely is a victory in itself and also believes in cherishing said comrades like they were your own family. Had circumstances been different, he'd probably have been right at home in Oto, who (previously) believed most of the things he does.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: This is what his overall motivation essentially boils down to, but his personality problems and lack of respect for life forever ensure that ''no one'' will ever give him validation.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Damningly tells Iruka he will never acknowledge him as a true ninja and complains about his "pampering" Naruto while tossing him to the wayside despite the hypocrisy of ignoring Konoha's general ideals. A lot of his issues seem to stem from what he perceives as Konoha not giving him his dues; the problem is that giving him what he wants only exuberates his arrogance whereas (rightly) not showing him appreciation earns his ire. Either way, with his mindset, he had no chance of ever obtaining his goal to the point that he refused to believe what Naruto tells him about Orochimaru abandoning Otogakure and not waiting for Mizuki as the Sannin promised.
* IRejectYourReality: Inferred with his deriding Konoha for amending its opinion of Naruto, clearly still sore from the humiliating beating he received from the boy.
* {{Jerkass}}: He once murdered a comrade for being "too weak", and he reveals the truth about Naruto's origins with sadistic glee.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He tells Naruto that Iruka is strict because he had to learn maturity after losing his parents at a young age, and that deep down, he understands Naruto. Granted, this is a tactic used to manipulate Naruto, but he also happens to be correct.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: His {{Filler}} arc shows a flashback of him being once a good friend of Iruka when they were kids... Only to reveal later in that same episode that, on Mizuki's part, [[FalseFriend this friendship has always been a lie]].
* LackOfEmpathy: And damn proud of it. He takes way too much pride in stating that things like friendship and loyalty are worthless and derides the Will of Fire as pure nonsense.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Trusting Orochimaru to keep his word ultimately cost him dearly.
* LightningBruiser: The first stage of his Cursed Seal boosts his power and speed which enables him to bat around Naruto and Iruka a bit. [[ClippedWingAngel However,]] he sacrifices most of his speed for power when entering his second stage which enables Naruto to outpace and defeat him.
* ManipulativeBastard: He manipulates Naruto to steal the scroll, in order to steal it for himself and make Naruto his scapegoat. Later, he also tempts his cellmates Fūjin and Raijin into helping stage a breakout in exchange for delicious food that may be awaiting them at Otogakure. [[TooDumbToLive They didn't have a chance.]]
* MegaNeko: His final cursed seal form resembles a tiger.
* MightyGlacier: In the {{Filler}} arc, he starts to sacrifice speed for power, which ends up being part of what helps Iruka and Naruto beat him.
* MoralityPet: Subverted with his ex-fiancé, Tsubaki. He takes time to visit her after his escape and at first, treats her with an unnerving gentleness that seems so out-of-character from what we know him for. The moment he mentions Naruto, however, Tsubaki chastises her lover for his prejudiced views on the boy as well as saying how hard he fought for Konoha during Konoha Crush, which brings all the bad memories of the "nine-tailed brat" back to the forefront. He stops playing nice and knocks out Tsubaki upon seeing that she lacks his ambition and has no desire to support his lunacy. Later, when she tries once more to dissuade Mizuki, all he tells her is that if she really cares for him so much, she should make herself useful to him before literally tossing her aside, fully cementing that his love for power has surpassed any feelings he may have once had for her.
* MrFanservice: During his return in the filler arc, his new outfit shows off his newly acquired muscles which are admittedly easy on the eyes. If only the man himself wasn't such a bastard.
* NeverMyFault: He overheard Hiruzen and the exam proctors deciding not to hire him initially as a teacher due to him unnecessarily killing his teammate and got pissed, growing to resent Iruka passing while he didn't, never once stopping to consider that killing that poor ninja might have been something to reflect on. Even when he was eventually passed, he refused to let it go.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: As a result of going along with his plan, Naruto learns the crucial Shadow Clone Jutsu and actually ''does'' graduate from the academy, even if Mizuki was planning on using him.
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[AllThereInTheManual The First Databook]] lists Mizuki's age as 27 and Iruka's as 25. However, the Second Databook -- due to a case of WritersCannotDoMath (Iruka's meant to be a student at the time of the Nine-Tails' attack) -- does a {{Retcon}} for Iruka's age to 22-23 (during Part I) and 26 (for [[TimeSkip Part II]]). Mizuki, meanwhile, is never mentioned in the Databooks again, being a OneShotCharacter before the anime {{Filler}} brought him back. So Mizuki was ''originally'' described as two years Iruka's senior, but if the anime {{Retcon}} is taken as {{Canon}}, they're both the same age (22-23) during Part I.
* PaperTiger: Despite being a Chuunin, he isn't very impressive when it comes to fighting prowess, getting the tar beaten out of him by Naruto and his admittedly large number of Shadow Clones despite the boy failing his academy graduation that same day. He loses this status in the anime filler arc, where he ironically gains access to a tiger-like transformation.
* RedemptionRejection: Several times he throws Iruka's pleas to own up to his sins back in his non-friend's face, getting increasingly aggravated with each plea. It isn't until they battle it out where they'd taken the Teacher Recruitment Exam years ago that the latter gets that Mizuki has no intention of atoning that he hardens himself to bring his "old friend" in.
* TheResenter: Towards Iruka. It seems they used to be genuine friends at some point, but Mizuki grew jealous of the attention paid to Iruka, and Iruka passing the teaching exam when he didn't, appeared to be the last straw for him.
* {{Sadist}}: He shows many signs of being one, taking pleasure in suffocating a downed teammate just because he could and wanting to drag out Iruka and Naruto's suffering during his rematches with them.
* SequelEpisode: His brief reappearance in a {{Filler}} arc qualifies.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: He gets beaten at the start of the series and, not counting {{Filler}}, just vanishes from the plot. Yet his single action of convincing Naruto to steal the Hokage's scroll and learning Shadow Clone Jutsu ended up helping Naruto go from the worst student at the academy to the WorldsStrongestMan.
* SocialDarwinist: Shows shades of this in the {{Filler}} -- it bites him in the ass because he's applying the "only the strong survive" ideal against Naruto when it's actually against ''him''.
* StarterVillain: The first villain that Naruto encounters.
* StartOfDarkness: It's unclear if he was ever a decent human being (his lover believes he was, he claims he wasn't), but his resentment for Iruka turned any feelings of genuine camaraderie sour until the ambition and malice were all that was left.
* TookALevelInBadass: Until he got a serious HoistByHisOwnPetard.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Orochimaru at first, truly believing him to be a great ninja (if only for how powerful he was) and refused to believe Naruto when he told him otherwise. It isn't till he's a victim of Oro's manipulations himself that he finally gets the message and by that point, it costs him greatly.
* UnwittingPawn: He tried to use Naruto as this in order to obtain the Sacred Scroll only for it to blow up in his face. He later recruits Fūjin and Raijin to his cause and appears only to use them as a distraction while he slips to Orochimaru's undetected, though his drive to kill Iruka and Naruto made him lose sight of that plan. Later, he finds out too late that ''he'' was Orochimaru's pawn by being given that prototype cursed seal and that unstable formula.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: PlayedWith. He did level grind during his time in prison. It's just that Naruto's level grinding, by the time of the {{Filler}} arc in which he appeared, was more effective.
* VillainRevealsTheSecret: He is the one who informs Naruto that he is the container of the Nine-Tailed Fox.
* VirtueIsWeakness: Makes it a point to repeatedly let everyone know that he looks down on camaraderie and loyalty. He actually gets pissed off whenever someone tries to convince him otherwise.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: After he breaks out of jail, he's given a collared vest courtesy of Tsubaki to show off his newly gained six-pack.
* WhamLine: Delivers the first in the series, revealing Naruto's status as the demon fox host.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Has white hair, is an asshole.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Plans on doing this to Naruto. It's fair to assume he never intended to keep the Legendary Stupid Brothers around either, even if they had managed to reach Orochimaru.

[[caption-width-right:215:Torune Aburame]]

Danzo's bodyguards for the Kage Summit, and the best operatives in Root. Fu is from the Yamanaka clan and Torune is from Aburame clan. Fu attempts to possess Ao's body in an effort to take his Byakugan but fails thanks to Fifth Mizukage's efforts. Both get [[WorfEffect worfed]] by Tobi, but not before Torune infects his right arm, forcing him to sit out on the fight between Sasuke and Danzo. Later on, they are unceremoniously killed off as a demonstration of Edo Tensei's preparation rituals.
----
* AdaptationExpansion: Torune was [[spoiler:deployed by Kabuto into the war in episode 316, and faced Shino in battle during the next episode, giving both characters a little backstory.]] Torune had been raised by Shibi, Shino's father after his actual father Shikuro died at an earlier point.
* AndIMustScream: Fu's variation of the Yamanaka clan's GrandTheftMe invokes this, by placing the target's body in a [[PerversePuppet booby-trapped puppet]], while Fu gains control of the target's body. When he used this on Ao, he immediately attempted to [[EyeScream stab out his eye]] and when that didn't work, attempted to [[OffWithHisHead cut off his head]].
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Both of them figure out how Tobi's MadeOfAir powers work after 3 minutes of fighting him. Tobi even compliments them on it.
* BackFromTheDead: Torune is revived by [[spoiler:Kabuto using Edo Tensei. This is expanded upon in the Anime.]]
%%* ICannotSelfTerminate
* BeeBeeGun: Torune's bugs differ from the rest of his clan's being that they are nano-sized and capable of destroying target's cells in addition to draining chakra.
* BeetleManiac: Torune, being an Aburame, can control bugs.
* BigBrotherMentor: Torune was one to Shino in the anime.
* BusCrash: [[spoiler:And they are immediately killed off after their reappearance.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: Torune and Fu in the anime.
%%* CombatPragmatist
* CombinationAttack: When Fu and Torune attack together.
* CurbStompCushion: Although they didn't stand a chance against Tobi, and it does no good in the long run, they manage to figure out how his abilities work and infect his arm, forcing him to amputate it and sit out the fight against Danzo. Similarly, although he gets his arm blown off (albeit he might've been able to tank it better if he were alive) and is quickly sealed, Torune manages to hold his own against KCM Naruto and Shino for a hot minute in filler, and would've lasted longer had [[CrazyPrepared Shino]] not had a counter of his own..
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Torune's Jar of Poison technique.
* EliteMooks: They are strong enough to put up a fight against Tobi, making them one of the few ANBU whose elite status is not an InformedAttribute
* FriendToBugs: Torune. Again, he's an Aburame so it kinda comes with the territory.
* GrandTheftMe: Fu's Mind Transfer Jutsu.
* HumanSacrifice: Fu becomes one when Kabuto uses him for Edo Tensei.
%%* TheMinionMaster
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Fu is a very skilled sensor, though not in the same league as Karin.
* OddNameOut: Their names don't fit their respective clans' naming patterns. At first, you could chalk it up to Root assigning them [[CodeName codenames]] for operations, but the fourth databook reveals that, yes, Fu and Torune are their birth names.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted with Fu, as he shares his first name with the Nanabi Jinchuriki.
%%* OurZombiesAreDifferent
* PoisonousPerson: Torune, via his bugs.

* PeoplePuppets: Fū is capable of using his clan’s Mind-Body Swap hidden jutsu and techniques related to it.
* PutOnABus: Aren't seen after the Danzo fight until the Start of the war arc.
* SatelliteCharacter: Aside from being Danzo's guards and having unique twists on their respective clan's techniques, they really don't contribute much apart from being [[spoiler:fuel for an Edo Tensei demonstration]]. The anime expands Torune a bit more, though.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Viz’s translations Fū as “Foo”.
* TheStoic: Due to Root's emotional suppression training.
* TheSymbiote: Torune has a mutually beneficial relationship with the insect colony living inside his body.
* TouchOfDeath: Torune's bugs are distributed this way.
* UnwantedRevival: [[spoiler:Torune was only killed and brought back as a demonstration as to how the Impure World Reincarnation jutsu works]].

Despite putting up some resistance, it's very clear they didn't stand a chance.
* TheWormThatWalks: While not made of bugs, Torune has housed a swarm of nano-sized bugs in his body since shortly after his birth, which might be more disturbing than simply being composed of insects. Torune is basically a human hive.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HaruhiTerada (JP), Creator/StephanieSheh (EN), Julie Basecqz (French)

[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_577.png]]

Kakashi's team member from his childhood, Rin was a skilled medical ninja. Obito is killed in action saving Kakashi from an enemy Rock Ninja and Rin is presumed deceased although it is not revealed how. It's later revealed that she did die, which was how both Kakashi and Obito got their Mangekyo Sharingan and was a key factor in sparking Obito's FaceHeelTurn into becoming Tobi. It was also revealed that she was a former Jinchuriki of the Sanbi. Her presence can still be felt years after her death, influencing how both Kakashi and Obito behaved for the rest of their lives.

->Her hobby was collecting shells.
->Favorite word: "friendship"
----
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime extends Kakashi's flashbacks to the day Rin died, adding scenes of him rescuing her and dialogue between the two, wherein she describes the ritual she underwent, but can't completely recall -- which was having the Sanbi implanted in her.
* AfterlifeAntechamber: It's eventually shown she had stayed in one for all the years after her death, watching and waiting for a destined moment when her spirit could help Obito and Kakashi save Naruto and Sasuke. She greets Obito upon his death, and when he is ready takes him with her to the afterlife.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Obito had a very strong crush on her, while she only thought of him as a good friend, as the object of her affections was Kakashi, who similarly doesn't return her feelings.
* AnimalBattleAura: As a playable character in ''VideoGame/NarutoShippudenUltimateNinjaStorm4'', her Ultimate Jutsu involves her losing control of the Three-Tails, first forming a Version One Chakra Shroud, then rapidly progressing to Version Two and transforming into the beast itself.
* BreakTheCutie: This poor little girl's life was ''harsh'', to say at least. She was kidnapped by bad guys, watched one of her teammates die, [[spoiler:was kidnapped again and turned into the ''Naruto'' equivalent of a nuke, and decided to kill herself to save her village.]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She and Obito were very close from a young age and he had an unrequited crush on her.
* TheCutie: A textbook example of this.
* DamselInDistress: She is taken captive by a StealthExpert Stone ninja, prompting the plot of the gaiden. [[spoiler:Later she was kidnapped again, this time by Mist ninja with a crazy evil scheme...who were themselves being mind-controlled by Madara.]]
* DramaticIrony: She wanted to prevent the Sanbi from rampaging in Konoha and deliberately took the hit from Kakashi. The irony is that her suicide by Kakashi’s hand will be one of the main reasons for [[spoiler:Obito becoming the masked man known as Tobi and his attack using Kurama on Konoha]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: She can be seen with the rest of her team in a photo behind Kakashi's bed on the cover of Chapter 16.
* FacialMarkings: She had a rectangular purple marking on both sides of her cheeks.
* FreudianTrio: She was [[TheKirk The Ego]] on Team Minato.
* FirstFriend: It's implied she was this to Obito, being the first to support his goal in becoming the Hokage and unknowingly becoming the girl of Obito's dreams. [[spoiler:It's because of Rin's death that Obito became an enemy of Konoha.]]
* HealingHands: She's able to use the standard healing technique.
* TheHeart: She was the mediator between Kakashi and Obito whenever there was a conflict between them.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:She deliberately took the hit from Kakashi, as she had the Sanbi sealed inside her and was intended as a TrojanHorse for Konoha. Once they had "rescued" her and taken her back, the seal would break and the Sanbi would run wild.]]
* HeroicSuicide: [[spoiler:She puts herself in front of Kakashi's Chidori to save their village from a potential disaster.]]
* HeroicWillpower: She is able to resist giving away vital information while under an enemy genjutsu.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: [[spoiler:Madara Uchiha, the true perpetrator behind her death placed a cursed seal in her heart which stopped any attempts to off herself and end his plans. [[SuicideByCop She was forced to have Kakashi take it out for her.]]]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Ran through the heart with a [[ShockAndAwe Chidori]] from her love interest. Sure, it was quite unintentional on Kakashi's part, but ''damn''.
* KillTheCutie: Kakashi killed her by running her through with a Chidori. [[spoiler:But that was Rin's plan all along. But unfortunately for her this very much played into the hands of Madara Uchiha, the true mastermind behind Rin's death.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: She was Obito's entire reason for living, and also the only one keeping Kakashi's mental health together out of a promise he made with Obito to keep her safe. When she dies, everything goes to hell for both boys.
* TheLostLenore: For Obito, whose entire motivation stems from her death and a desire to create a world where she can live once more.
* LoveTriangle: Obito was in love with Rin, who had feelings for Kakashi.
* TheMedic: She was extremely skilled for her age, being able to perform a complex eye transplant with minimal tools at thirteen.
* MoralityChain: Had she never died, both Kakashi and [[spoiler:Obito]] would have never turned out to be the broken men who've dragged the entire world in their despair.
* NervesOfSteel: She doesn't give away vital information ''when under genjutsu torture'' and is able to steel herself long enough to perform the eye transplant on Kakashi. She only breaks down afterward [[BreakTheCutie when she is forced to leave Obito behind to die alone]].
* NiceGirl: Mediates Kakashi and Obito's arguments without taking sides, despite her feelings for Kakashi. A contrast to Sakura, who spent most of her time always agreeing with her LoveInterest [[SingleTargetSexuality Sasuke]] over Naruto.
* NotSoSmallRole: She died. ''Everything went straight to hell.''
* ObliviousToLove: She was completely unaware of Obito's feelings for her, until Kakashi told her. Given Obito's fate, she didn't take it too well.
* OnlyOneName: She's actually a subversion, but it's still worth noting that it took roughly ''350 chapters'' since her introduction before we finally learned her family name. Many fans used various reasons to assume that she didn't have one.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's been dead for several years by the time the plot commences.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: It wasn't her sensei's death, nor her teammate's "death". It was ''her'' death that caused the plot of ''Naruto'' in the first place, despite being a rather obscure character who had no direct connection or hand in any of the major events of the backstory, such as the Nine-Tails' Attack or the Uchiha Clan Massacre. Why? Because her death in the backstory directly motivated Obito into becoming [[TheHeavy Tobi]]. While Obito emphasizes that she is not the only reason he started the war, the fact remains the way she died was a major motivation for his new world view and all that came with it.
* {{Protectorate}}: To Obito and Kakashi.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: She's a PosthumousCharacter, so she isn't exactly around to receive characterization, but the main things we know about her are she's a NiceGirl, a CombatMedic in training, and that Obito loves her but she loves Kakashi. That last one is the most notable, and the main reason she exists is [[spoiler:to be TheLostLenore for Obito, motivating him to become [[TheHeavy Tobi]], and to awaken both his and Kakashi's Mangekyo Sharingan.]]
* SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan: [[spoiler:In her was sealed Three-Tailed Beast for a short time.]]
* ShaggyDogStory: Given that she [[spoiler:died not too long after Obito, which would have largely rendered his and Kakashi's rescue of her (and Obito's HeroicSacrifice) pointless,]] barring Kakashi's acquisition of the Sharingan. Considering this also resulted in [[spoiler:Obito's StartOfDarkness as Tobi]], her kidnapping kinda acts as the catalyst for the events of the series.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: She was just a minor character, [[spoiler: [[ForWantOfANail but her death turned a really good kid into a really bad guy, which influenced the whole plot.]]]]
* SuicideByCop: [[spoiler:The Three-Tailed Beast had been sealed inside her by agents of Kirigakure, and intended for Rin to return to Konoha, where the beast would break out and rampage, destroying the village. Instead, when Kakashi tried to kill one of the Mist-nin pursuing them, Rin chose to save her village from this fate by putting herself in the way of his attack, which resulted in both she and the Sanbi (temporarily, in the Sanbi's case -- Tailed Beasts cannot truly die, being living chakra, though they take some time to reform after their host dies with the beast still sealed in them) dying and thwarting Kiri’s plan. Course, she did not know that her dying was Madara's plan, and the way she died was in fact a even better result than he had hoped for in ensuring Obito's corruption.]]
* TogetherInDeath: Of a sort: Much like Kakashi and his father, [[spoiler:she meets Obito after his death and takes him into the afterlife.]]
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler:The Kiri-nin planned for her to become one by destroying her hometown with the Three-Tails.]]
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Despite all her attempts to counteract it, she became one for Madara Uchiha.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: She's mostly the reason ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' is as it is.
* WartsAndAll: She promised Obito she would always watch over him, this extended to after her death. [[spoiler:When Obito dies, Rin greets him in the afterlife with a smile. Even knowing all he has done, she accepts him all the same, only referencing his crimes as him being "lost" for a while]].

The ANBU are EliteMooks that take orders directly from the Kage, performing special high-level missions, such as assassinations and torture.
----
* CombatCommentator: Zō provides the blow-by-blow during Hiruzen and Orochimaru's fight.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Yūgao gets some closure during the War arc when she meets up with the freshly resurrected Hayate who is instructed by Kabuto to rob corpses of fallen shinobi to use for the Akatsuki's side during the conflict.
* EliteMooks: More of an InformedAbility, but there was that case with three [=ANBUs=] stopping one of Pain's summons with an epic elemental jutsu combo.
** There's also [[GreenThumb Yamato]], though it's easy to forget he's actually ANBU. [[BadassTeacher Kakashi]], Itachi, and [[SnakePeople Orochimaru]] are all also former ANBU. The general rule seems to be that if we get to know them, they live up to ANBU's reputation, and for the most part, the rest are basically there to be [[FakeUltimateMook fodder]].
* FakeUltimateMook: Most [=ANBUs=] are generally killed as if they were simple Genin, there are even Genin cases that last longer.
* IdenticalStranger: A similar-looking ANBU captain to Zō appears in the opening of the Three-Tails filler arc, being killed by Kabuto before delivering a message on a lead to finding a hideout of Orochimaru's. There's room to speculate that the one who appeared during the Invasion of Pain arc may be another individual as well.
* InformedAbility: They're allegedly extremely competent. Their track record does little to support this, barring those viewers get to know.
* MauveShirt: Zō the cat-masked white-cloaked ANBU member and Yūgao Uzuki.
* MrExposition: During Hiruzen and Orochimaru's fight, it is Zō who explains to another less informed ANBU about the first two Hokages as well as the principals regarding Edo Tensei.
* MinorMajorCharacter: Zō is the ''leader'' of the ANBU, yet barely has any role in the story. And Yūgao is the one who found a young Sasuke after the Uchiha Massacre, but this was never brought up again. Nor did she actually get a chance to follow through on her vow to avenge Hayate's murder.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: The ANBU are actually quite effective and have high mission success rate. We never see their achievements because their specialty is infiltration and cloak-and-dagger style assassination ops. As dark as ''Naruto'' gets, focusing too much on ANBU would get a little bloody.
* RedShirt: If they appear at any point you can bet they're going to be murdered sooner rather than later.
* TheWorfEffect: Since they're supposed to be the best, they're used to hype whatever the newest threat is. Slightly subverted with the most elite ANBU, as in, the ones that actually managed to survive their tours. Konohamaru and Kakashi, for example, were ANBU. Former ANBU tend to have a better track record since they have survived the trials by fire.

Kakashi's father, also known as the White Fang. He was an extremely skilled and respected shinobi until a critical mission for Konoha, during which he chose to rescue his comrades instead of completing the mission. The village, including the teammates he rescued, shunned him for his actions, and after it became too much to bear, he took his own life. He killed Sasori's parents at some point, fueling Chiyo's ire towards Konoha for many years, though she later makes peace with the matter.

After Kakashi was temporarily killed during the Invasion of Pain arc, Sakumo met with his son's spirit and both father and son finally reconcile over their tragic circumstances.
----
* AfterlifeAntechamber: Was apparently stuck in one due to his regrets over his suicide. When Kakashi's near-death experience allows them to meet and discuss things, Kakashi's forgiveness allows Sakumo to move on and finally reunite with his wife.
* BrokenPedestal: To all of Konoha, especially Kakashi. As seen below, he eventually was rebuilt.
* DrivenToSuicide: He committed Seppuku to regain his lost honor.
* FamedInStory: At the height of his time, he was even more legendary than the Sannin.
* GoodParents: At least at first. A single dad after his wife died giving birth, he loved Kakashi dearly and showered him with affection along with picking him up every day after school despite his busy schedule. His suicide crushed his son, who decided to live entirely by the rules and shut off his emotions... at least until Rin and Obito died, after which Kakashi took his father's ideals to heart.
* HatedByAll: After he chose to abandon an important mission to save his comrades, he was completely and utterly vilified by his home village, even by the people he saved, leading to his subsequent depression and suicide.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Averted, his preferred sword was a tanto.
* MyGreatestFailure: He sees his suicide and subsequent failure to raise Kakashi as this.
* NiceGuy: He was perfectly cordial to Might Duy, who was known and mocked for being an 'eternal genin'. He's also appropriately abashed when he mistakenly assumes Guy got into the academy and acknowledges to Kakashi that Guy's hard work will make him a strong rival.
* NotSoSmallRole: Look at the entries of the people he indirectly influenced. Despite being much older than them, in a way, he was ''the'' prototype for all the values embodied in the series.
* PosthumousCharacter: Dead long before the story begins and unlike other notable ninjas, was never revived with Kabuto's Edo Tensei.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Saved his teammates at the expense of a mission.
* RebuiltPedestal: Thanks to Obito, Kakashi eventually gets that pedestal back, after hearing Obito say that he respects Sakumo's decision. Seems the rest of the village eventually (as well as many from neighboring villages) got the pedestal back as well. With most characters in the present speaking very highly of Konoha’s legendary "White Fang".
* RedBaron: Konoha's White Fang, stemming from his use of a White Light Chakra Blade. Some say that he was even more terrifying to face in combat than the Sannin!
* SpiritAdvisor: [[spoiler:Eventually meets up with Kakashi and listens to his tale.]]
* SoProudOfYou: [[spoiler:To Kakashi, after hearing his tale]] in the Invasion of Pain arc.
* TogetherInDeath: He notes that Kakashi's mother died far too young, and is overjoyed that he will finally be able to be with her again after Kakashi helps him forgive himself so his spirit can truly move on to the afterlife.
* TrueCompanions: With his fellow shinobi, who he chooses to protect instead of finishing the mission. Unluckily for him, [[UngratefulBastard they don't return the devotion]]. True, it was an important mission, but still...
* VindicatedByHistory: An InUniverse example. At the time when he was alive, his selfless act of saving his comrades had him made a target of ridicule by the village and he ended up dying a broken man. However, over the years that followed his suicide, pretty much everyone realized how honorable and good he had been, turning him into a hero among the Leaf that became well known throughout the world. Even Kakashi eventually felt this way, and his act of saving people would inspire Kakashi to become the man he is now.

The grandson of Mito Uzumaki and Hashirama Senju. Dreamed of being Hokage, but died before he could do so.
----
* AdaptationExpansion: In the anime, he was with Orochimaru and two other genin when he died, implying that Orochimaru was his sensei. Furthermore, Orochimaru witnessing both his and Dan's deaths was his StartOfDarkness.
* ArtifactOfDoom: Tsunade gave him her cursed necklace to wear. He wore it for one day before dying.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: His body was found so mangled that it's beyond recognition.
* DeathOfAChild: His death occurred a day after he celebrated his 12th birthday.

* IdenticalStranger: Basically Naruto with brown hair. It might be more than a coincidence. He ''was'' part-Uzumaki, after all.
* IdiotHair: Just like Naruto.
* IdiotHero: Look who he's based on.
* KilledOffScreen: His death isn't shown, but the aftermath is (albeit under a white shroud).
* KillTheCutie: The anime shows he was blown apart by paper bombs.
* LeaderWannabe: His dream was to become Hokage.
* OddNameOut: Unlike other named male Senju, his name doesn’t with “-ma”.
* OnlyOneName: Like his sister and despite what the fandom tells you, "Senju" is not his surname. His official full name is simply "Nawaki".

Tsunade's lost love, and Shizune's uncle. Dreamed of being Hokage. Years after his death, Tsunade still carries a torch for the guy, thus leading Tsunade to never find someone else to fill his place (i.e. Jiraiya).
----
* AllLovingHero: His favorite phrase is even "peace".
-->"It is because we are living in the shinobi world, where death is always following us, that I… want to put my life on the line to subdue this war-ridden world. I dearly love both the village and my comrades… That is why I want to protect them."
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Kabuto revived him for the war using Edo Tensei.]]
* BigDamnHeroes:[[spoiler:Saves Tsunade just before she is killed by Madara.]]
* BirdsOfAFeather: In Chapter 160, his lover Tsunade recognizes her similarities to him when he agrees with her desire to have at least one medical ninja in every unit so that there's a better chance of surviving a mission or even a war. Also, both have a deceased younger sibling whom they loved dearly -- for her, it was her brother Nawaki; for him, it was his unnamed sister.
* CoolUncle: His niece Shzune holds him in very high regard and respects him deeply.
* GrandTheftMe: His Spirit Transformation Technique.
%%* ICannotSelfTerminate
%%* PeoplePuppets
* LeaderWannabe: Like Nawaki before him, he dreamed of being Hokage.
* TheLostLenore: Gender inverted. He's Tsunade's dead love interest.
* NiceGuy: Dan was a great man that deeply loved his village and its inhabitants. He also cared deeply for his sister and would often pick her up from the Academy; something he would later do with his niece as well. He is also described as a wise and honorable man that truly believed in justice.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: He's an Edo Tensei zombie.
* PosthumousCharacter: Dead before the story started.
* PrettyBoy: Handsome soft facial features with long and flowing cyan-colored hair. Hard not to see why Tsunade was smitten.
* StoryBreakerPower: His Spirit Transformation Technique definitely qualifies for this. It allows Dan to effectively turn himself into a spirit, rendering all physical attacks useless on him, and possess the body of his target. Once inside their body, he can suppress and collapse the victim's soul, and kill them. Of course, Dan had to be killed off in the 2nd Great Ninja War[[note]]as well as get trapped in a barrier when he's brought back from the dead for the 4th Great Ninja War[[/note]] since such a powerful technique would've certainly allowed the Leaf to easily take down future threats.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: His selfless nature and genuine desire for peace make his untimely death all the more tragic.
* UnwantedRevival: He was brought back against his will and spends much of his time worrying over it, but admits in the end that getting to help Tsunade and reaffirm his love for her made it not all bad.

It was thanks to her influence that Kabuto later inherited her kindness and trademark glasses. She was tragically killed by her own adoptive son after both were brainwashed into killing the other by Danzo.

Years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kabuto goes on to inherit her orphanage and takes her place as the primary caretaker.
----

* TheInformant: Her job as part of ROOT.
* MamaBear: To the children of the orphanage. Danzo uses this knowledge to blackmail her back into Konoha's service.

->''"Just cuz these things happen, doesn't make it an excuse!"''

The owner of Ichiraku Ramen, Naruto's favorite place to eat. He has been giving Naruto delicious ramen for many years. Along with Iruka, he and his daughter become one of the first people to not treat Naruto as an outcast when they first meet.

->Favorite phrase: "Artisan", "craft".
----
* BerserkButton: Tarnishing ramen, as Matsu found out when he stuck his finger in some ramen Naruto was going to eat.
** In one filler, he doesn't appreciate Ayame getting startled by Naruto, his favorite customer, threatening to ban him from Ichiraku ''forever'' if he doesn't make a delivery for them in restitution. Eep.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He does ''not'' take kindly to people who are unnecessarily cruel; when someone suggested that not letting Naruto eat there would increase his customers, his response boiled down to "Get out and take everyone else who thinks that with you."
* CoolOldGuy: He's a pretty cool guy that is also pretty old.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Chapter 320 features him heavily, as he is subjected to the incompetency of his two ramen understudies. Earlier in the anime fillers, he runs afoul of a ninja chef, Hakkaku, who kidnaps Ayame until he can either provide the shinobi with the fabled "Phantom Recipe" or defeat him in a cooking contest. With help from Chōji, Sakura, and, of course, Naruto, he wins the contest and Ayame back, revealing at the same time that the "Phantom Recipe" was just broth disposal.
* KarmicJackpot: Being nice to Naruto when he was a social outcast meant that once he grew up and became the hero of the ninja world, he helped Ichiraku Ramen expand and become a franchise.
* MeaningfulName: Teuchi's name can mean "making noodles by hand" (手打ち).
* NiceGuy: Teuchi is a very kind and jovial man. He and his daughter are among the few villagers who ''don't'' look at Naruto with contempt and/or fear from the very beginning; they even state outright that he's their favorite customer.
* NonActionGuy: Unlike most of the other characters on this page, he's ''not'' a ninja.
* StupidSexyFlanders: In the "what's under Kakashi's mask" episode, Teuchi is seen swooning over Kakashi's unmasked (and unseen) face along with his daughter Ayame. Make of it what you will.
* SupremeChef: He makes the best ramen in town.
* YouFool: He screams at Matsu and calls him a fool for sticking his finger in a bowl of ramen.

Daughter to the proprietor of Ramen Ichiraku, Naruto's favorite restaurant.
----
* ChangingOfTheGuard: According to Episode 18 of the ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' anime, she has taken up the role of head ramen chef/owner at Ichiraku.
* CoolBigSis: Because she is one of the very few people who has always been nice to Naruto since the beginning, Naruto looks up to her as an older sister figure and even affectionately calls her "Ayame-neechan."
* FormerlyFit: In a filler episode, she gets kidnapped by a group of ninja chefs that keep her in line with delicious ramen. So delicious that she overeats and becomes fat, much to her dad's horror. She goes back to normal by the end thanks to the help of new diet-type ramen that proves popular with women.
* MissingMom: Her mother, Teuchi's wife, is never mentioned.
* NiceGirl: Ayame is a kind and cheerful young woman. She and her father are among the few villagers who ''don't'' look at Naruto with contempt and/or fear from the very beginning; they even state outright that he's their favorite customer.
* SatelliteCharacter: She's only shown assisting her father in the Ramen Shop. That said she's shown to have a good relationship with Naruto, and she is a good older sister figure to him.

Father of Might Guy, died fighting the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist.
----
* AllTheOtherReindeer: Like Might Guy and Rock Lee, he only knows taijutsu. Unlike them, he was unable to make a name for himself until his death.
* AlmightyJanitor: Despite mastering the Eight Gates, he never ascended past the rank of Genin, earning himself the title of 'Eternal Genin'.
* BrokenPedestal: Becomes one for his son for a brief period of time after publicly failing one too many missions and apologizing in front of him. After Guy has a talk with Kakashi [[PetTheDog where the latter calls Duy an amazing ninja]] and Duy shows Guy the Eight Gates, he becomes a RebuiltPedestal.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He wasn't taken seriously as a ninja due to his inability to go beyond the Genin rank, but through hard work and determination he mastered the Eight Gates Technique, which was powerful enough to stop seven elite ninjas at the same time when he defeated the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist, killing several of them.
* CharlesAtlasSuperPower: Just like his son and Rock Lee, he is stronger and faster than most ninja.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: The man mocked as the "Eternal Genin" and also the perfected user of the Eight Inner Gates Formation.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Deconstructed with the Eight Gates as he shows what happens when you use the jutsu ''past your prime.'' Duy took 20 years of his taijutsu career mastering the jutsu, making him a middle-aged man and father by the time of its completion. Opening the Gates puts an enormous strain on the body that demands the user to recuperate after each use. Add Duy training, the stresses of being a father, and the different ninja missions that Duy had to do, and one can see why Duy often failed simple missions that labeled him as the Eternal Genin. Even his DyingMomentOfAwesome on which he killed four out of Seven Swordsmen of the Mist pales in comparison when Might Guy nearly killed Madara, then the WorldsStrongestMan by using the same technique.
* {{Determinator}}: A trait that was also passed down to his son Guy.
* DoomedMoralVictor: One of his philosophies was that "winning" wasn't defined as defeating an opponent, but as protecting something important to oneself. He died saving his son from the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: To save Guy and his team when he was a Genin, Duy opened up all Eight Gates and fought the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist. Keep in mind that he was fighting all seven of the Swordsmen of the Mist, and he had virtually no way of fighting them beyond it.
* EccentricMentor: He was the foundation of Guy's youth-based philosophy and self-rule training.
* GeniusBruiser: Evidenced in that few ninja can learn to open the Inner Gates no matter how much they train, let alone open all eight of them. Even a genius like Kakashi is only ever seen opening the first gate.
* GoodParents: One of the best in the series. He's loving, supportive, and outright awesome to Guy, instilling in him his never-give-up attitude, in addition to dying for Guy and his team.
* GoOutWithASmile: He died opening the Gate of Death while giving his son a smile that his self-rule was to protect him.
* HeroicSacrifice: Using the Eighth Gate is a suicide technique after all. His own HeroicSacrifice is the instilling value behind using the Eighth Gate, to protect your loved ones.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: Just like Guy and Rock Lee, Duy would discipline Guy for acting impulsive and misusing the self-rule concept. Then, they would embrace while in tears.
* HotBlooded: Like father, like son.
* LightningBruiser: Once he used the Eight Gates Technique.
* MookHorrorShow: Especially nasty version given that the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist are at worst elite mooks, and at best future kage. They faced up against a no-name, bottom-rate nin well past his prime. He killed four of them. Furthermore, it's implied that he died from the technique itself and the other three Swordsmen only survived because they outlasted his stamina.
* NiceGuy: Duy is friendly to everyone he meets, including his son's self-proclaimed rival. Any insult to him will result in him giving a thumbs up and an earnest thanks for the support.
* ObiWanMoment: His final moment with Guy was a smile and a thumbs up.
* OneManArmy: You'd have to be to fight all seven of the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist.
* PapaWolf: He rushed to the battlefield and beat ''all seven of the Seven Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist'' to protect his son.
* PosthumousCharacter: Long dead by the time the story begins and unlike other notable ninjas, was never resurrected with Kabuto's Edo Tensei.
* PunnyName: A ninja named 'Might Die'...
* YouShallNotPass: Pulled this on all Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist to protect his son.

Shikamaru's mother and Shikaku's wife. Known by both to be "troublesome".
----
* AlmightyMom: Her husband and son both fear her and usually try not to do anything to make her mad.
* ApronMatron: Her son and Husband do their best not to make her angry.
* AscendedExtra: Sort of. She only appears in person once in the manga whereas the anime filler gives her a couple more speaking appearances outside of her son's complaining.
* TheFaceless: Her cameo in ''Shippūden'' episode 82 has her face hidden when trying to get Shikamaru to eat following Asuma's death. Likely an artistic choice since her face had long been properly revealed by that time.
* HiddenDepths: The reason Shikaku fell in love with her? Because she has a gentle side.
* {{Housewife}}: She's a stay-at-home mom.

The parents of Sakura Haruno. They have only appeared in the [[NonSerialMovie non-canon]] sixth ''Shippuden'' movie, ''[[Anime/NarutoTheMovieRoadToNinja Road to Ninja]]'', and the ''Shippuden'' anime {{filler}}.
----
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Kizashi's hair resembles a cherry blossom. His daughter's name is literally "cherry blossom" in Japanese.
* CanonForeigner: They were created exclusively for the sixth ''Shippuden'' movie, ''Road to Ninja'', which is [[NonSerialMovie non-canon]], and their subsequent appearances have only been in the ''Shippuden'' anime {{filler}}. They have never appeared in the manga, nor in any other canon material. In [[https://web.archive.org/web/20150302072449/http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:164031 this 2014 Fuji TV Kobayashi interview]], Creator/MasashiKishimoto reveals that Sakura's unpopularity and his own antipathy towards her are the reasons why her parents are not canon.
* GoodParents: They love their daughter deeply.
* HappilyMarried: They're usually seen together and joking with each other.
* HereditaryHairstyle: Sakura got her hair color from Kizashi. [[spoiler:Sakura's daughter Sarada]] seems to have received her hairstyle from Mebuki.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Sakura gets her temper and nitpickiness from her mother and her joking side and laziness from her father.
* {{Muggles}}: Downplayed. Kizashi and Mebuki are ninjas, something that is focused on the ''Road to Ninja'' movie and a single anime episode, but their abilities pale in comparison to their daughter. Kizashi is still a genin despite his age, and going by dialogues, they seem to prefer civilian life over the duty of a ninja. In a world where genetics is an important factor in determining how powerful you are, despite having living parents, Sakura crafts her reputation on her own. As pointed out in the aforementioned 2014 interview, Haruno is not a clan.
* PungeonMaster: Kizashi's fond of puns, much to Sakura's chagrin.
* UnseenNoMore: Mebuki's voice could be heard in Part I of the anime in three episodes[[note]]3, 55, and 83 respectively[[/note]] a good decade before she made her proper debut.
