->Voiced by: Creator/YuuMizushima (pilot), Creator/ToruFuruya (anime), Creator/RyoHorikawa (CD dramas)

The main male character. A [[NiceGuy kind and gentle boy]], who is also [[TheDitherer extremely indecisive]], and [[CannotSpitItOut unable to reveal his true feelings.]] He's a very OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent apparently, but his PsychicPowers help him solving ''many'' issues...
----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''yousuke '''K'''asuga
* AuthorAvatar: Izumi Matsumoto has admitted that Kyosuke is based on himself.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Archie to Hikaru's Betty and Madoka's Veronica. Although it's a {{deconstruction}} of the classic love triangle.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards both his sisters. He tries to make Manami happy in the episode where she's tired of her life, and tries to protect Kurumi when he thinks she is being manipulated by a guy.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: {{Downplayed}}. The first impression we have of him is that of a meek EndearinglyDorky boy, especially compared to the aggressive Yusaku and the openly perverted duo of Hatta and Komatsu. However, while this is mostly true and he still is a good person at heart, on occasion it's shown that he wouldn't mind taking advantage of his powers (such as hypnosis or TimeStandsStill) to kiss or touch Madoka, which made her angry a few times. Not to mention that he does this while also being in a relationship with another girl, and constantly lying to her.
* BookDumb: In contrast to Madoka, his academic performance is not very good. While she got one of the three best results in a school test, Kyōsuke and his friends [[PluckyComicRelief Hatta and Komatsu]] were the three last ones... Well, and this happened even if Madoka helped him studying. [[note]] She helped him studying more than once, but instead of listening to her he preferred looking at her boobs.[[/note]]
* ButtMonkey: There is no episode where something ''hilariously'' bad doesn't happen to this kid. Like when he hopelessly tries to use telepathy in class to communicate with Madoka, but only ends up embarrassing himself in front of his classmates and the teacher.
* CannotSpitItOut: Kyōsuke wouldn't have had to keep up the charade with Hikaru for as long as he did if he had just told her about his true feelings upfront. Then again, he is the Poster Boy for Indecisiveness. (It doesn't help his situation that Madoka, due to her feelings of loyalty for Hikaru, keeps pushing Kyōsuke and Hikaru together despite having feelings for Kyōsuke herself).
* CantHoldHisLiquor: In chapter twelve, he drinks alcohol for the first time and gets drunken. He gets drunken again when he's [[DrowningMySorrows sad]] because he thinks everyone had [[ForgottenBirthday forgotten his birthday]]. And during a Cristmas party. And... Let's just say, he shouldn't drink.
* ClassicalAntiHero: He's ''very'' indecisive and isn't very talented overall, and has traits of this when dealing with his love interests as well, often acting cowardly towards Madoka and Hikaru. That said, he's a good guy at heart and can also be very brave in some situations.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Both Hikaru and Madoka are in love with him. He's too lazy to make his real feelings clear, and thinks Madoka never will love him back. That time he loses his indecisiveness in order to be more confident, he becomes popular with many girls at his school (except Madoka who is not impressed), and the next day, after he forgets everything and goes back to his old self, he's confused about his number of fangirls.
* ConsummateLiar: Becomes this due to his cowardice towards the two main girls.
* CovertPervert: When he thinks about Madoka.
* TheDitherer: Indecision is his middle name. He's the '''poster boy''' for indecisiveness among '80s anime fans, specifically the Wishy-Washy type.
* DubNameChange: Johnny in the Italian and Spanish dub, Max (short for "Maxime") in the French Dub.
* EndearinglyDorky: Kyosuke is an indecisive, awkward but sensitive boy who often tends to embarrass himself but has two pretty girls in love with him.
* ExtremeDoormat: Often overruled by Hikaru and other characters, but he's too spineless to protest.
* FatalFlaw: He's extremely indecisive, and this makes him so awkward and clueless when it comes to relationships with girls.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The kind, friendly but lazy and [[TheDitherer indecisive]] ''phlegmatic''.
* ImageSong: "Bayside Dancer".
* InsecureLoveInterest: Kyosuke is in love with Madoka, but he sincerely thinks he isn't and will never be good enough for her. He thinks that she's beautiful, intelligent, mature... and compared to her, he looks like a kid.
* IntrepidReporter: In the second movie, Kyōsuke grows into one of these (as a wartime photographer in the former Yugoslavia).
* KindheartedCatLover: He has some affection for his cat Jingoro. On occasion, he even comforts the cat when his sister [[TheGadfly Kurumi]] playfully picks on him.
* LoserProtagonist: He's awkward, not very bright, and there are comical scenes where he screws up or he makes a fool of himself ''in every episode''. Downplayed in that he's also a ChickMagnet, while the other three boys in his group of friends are even bigger losers than him.
* NiceGuy: Though not exactly flawless (especially when it comes to relationships), he does have a kind heart underneath the indecision and the laziness.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: Despite being BookDumb and lazy, he's still the kind-hearted and polite Noble Male to Roguish Male Yūsaku.
* OnlySaneMan: Can be this when dealing with the antics of his friends Hatta and Komatsu and/or his sisters, as well as the overly excitable Hikaru.
* PitbullDatesPuppy: With Madoka. He's the puppy, even if it seems more like that; in truth, Madoka is very kind and good at heart.
* PropheticDream: Whenever Kyosuke has a PropheticDream, the PropheticDream tells him always only half of the truth, e.g. the words he hears and the scenes he sees are always out of context.
* PsychicPowers: He's a rather powerful telekinetic, teleporter, can potentially TimeTravel and hypnotize... [[ButtMonkey himself.]]
* RidiculouslyAverageGuy: As far as someone with PsychicPowers can be average, Kyosuke is a fairly generic anime everyman otherwise. He's quite BookDumb and unathletic, not particularly talented at anything (besides photography), and awkward... But a NiceGuy, and a ChickMagnet nonetheless.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Savvy Guy to Hikaru's Energetic Girl.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Even more than Madoka. He's very ruthless towards Hikaru in the first movie.
* UnluckyEverydude: Subverted, but he would be a straight example without his PsychicPowers.

[[folder: Madoka Ayukawa]]
[[quoteright:245:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kor40d.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/SaekoShimazu (pilot), Creator/HiromiTsuru (anime), Creator/TomoSakurai (CD dramas)

The main female character. Madoka [[TheAce excels practically at everything]]: school grades, sports, music... and also fighting: while initially feared as a [[JapaneseDelinquents delinquent]], she's [[HeroWithBadPublicity actually a noble and heroic person]], who thinks more of others than herself. Her life as a loner isn't very happy, but she opens up to Kyōsuke and reveals [[MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold her true kind and selfless personality]] also to the other characters who weren't able see her as she really is.
----
* AcademicAthlete: Gets top marks at school without even studying that much, and is very good at sports.
* TheAce: She's practically excellent at everything she does.
* ActionGirl: In the first episode she takes on and defeats five male delinquents.
* ActionGirlfriend: Kyosuke may have psychic powers and be the the main character (though this is still argued), but she's actually the one who saves weaker people from delinquents by fighting against them (which made her earn a bad reputation as a delinquent) and who is extremely smart and talented at almost everything.
* AllAmazonsWantHercules: {{Averted}}. She's literally an amazon, but falls in love with Kyousuke, who is quite a RidiculouslyAverageGuy, TheDitherer and definitely an {{Everyman}}.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: ZigZagged. She's a beautiful brunette, who is also cool, composed and comes across as somewhat aloof in her demeanor at times; that said, she's a genuinely friendly person and is NotSoStoic.
* AmazonianBeauty: Sure, she's 15 and looks very beautiful and feminine, but she's well built (although she has no visible muscle tone), and also a martial artist (Kyōsuke and his sisters wanted to learn wrestling in the same place Madoka did). Just watch her fighting against the male delinquents who attack other people or piss her off. She's also [[StatuesqueStunner quite tall]].
* BadassAdorable: Very attractive, kind-hearted, graceful, and a KickChick who defeats bad guys.
* BadassBookworm: Incredibly smart, cultured and a classy musician, but a badass fighter as well.
* BadLiar: She's not good at lying at all, because she's usually very blunt, and when she lies to Kyōsuke because of her anger towards him, he suddenly finds out she lied to him.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: A very beautiful AloofDarkHairedGirl and the BigGood who performs most heroic deeds, definitely.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Often gets into fights but always remains pretty. Contrast this with [[ButtMonkey Kyosuke and Yusaku]], who get badly injured after their ridiculous stunts.
* BeingGoodSucks: Her fights against ill-intentioned thugs to help others [[HeroWithBadPublicity made her earn a bad reputation.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: The Veronica to Hikaru's Betty for Kyosuke's Archie. She's sexy, rather melancholic, reserved, deep and kinda troubled. However, the trope is {{deconstructed}}: she's an incredibly selfless and kind person, and is less spoiled than Hikaru.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: If you're kind and friendly towards Madoka, she's the best friend you could ever have. If you piss her off, heaven help you.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: During her childhood, she had BoyishShortHair, played football and easily was mistaken for a little boy.
* BigGood: Of course. After all, she's TheHero and a real ActionGirl.
* BlitheSpirit: She's a free-spirited, individualistic and alluring ElegantClassicalMusician, feminine and graceful but a badass if the situation calls for it.
* BookSmart: It's mentioned that she's one of the top students at her school.
* BrainyBrunette: And how! Contrasts with DumbBlonde [[TheDitz Hikaru]], who in truth is [[DownplayedTrope not so stupid]], but quite childish and naive.
* BrokenAce: She's extremely beautiful, smart, and talented at just about everything. But she's not that good at expressing how she really feels, being actually a troubled girl with a tough past as a loner. Before meeting Kyosuke, Hikaru was Madoka's only real friend because many people were afraid of her.
* BrokenBird: This is especially evident in both the next-to-last manga chapter and the [[BigDamnMovie first movie]], but arrived at in significantly different ways.
* BrutalHonesty: A very direct person, and while nice and polite, she can't stand pettiness and when she gets angry she never minces her words. Essentially, she always says what she thinks, except when it's about love.
* BullyHunter: She defeats delinquents fighting without any problem, and sadly became a HeroWithBadPublicity.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her "adult figure" is often used for {{Fanservice}} and adds to her mature allure.
* ByronicHeroine: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]]. She's actually a heroic, very selfless and good-natured character, anything but a [[TheSociopath sociopath]] and has great empathy towards other ones. The traits of this trope she has, being a lonely MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold and quite melancholic and sad inside, are introspectiveness, intelligence, perceptiveness, and a not exactly great self-esteem, despite her positive personality and her incredible talents and intelligence. Madoka has a somewhat DarkAndTroubledPast, is also really emotional even if she may seem tough and aloof, and can get mad and moody when someone makes her angry.
* TheCharmer: Seems like she gives a boy she had just met a kiss on the lips so he will perform a favor for her. In truth, that boy had always been in love with Madoka and had to transfer to a new town, while Kyōsuke's sister Kurumi was in love with that guy, so Madoka went to him to talk to him and help Kurumi.
* ClingyJealousGirl: While [[{{Tsundere}} she hardly admits it in front of others]], she actually can't stand Kyōsuke's indecisiveness between her and Hikaru. And when he auto-hypnotized himself and she saw him with other girls, heaven help you.
* CoolBigSis: Towards the younger kids. Despite her appearance and reputation, she's great with children (and even with pets).
* DeadpanSnarker: Not always, but she still has her moments. For example, she's prone to sarcastic remarks while giving her friends good advice, and sometimes she teases Kyōsuke in that way.
* TheDreaded: At first, she's feared as a delinquent by both male and female students, but grows out of it after befriending Kyosuke.
* DubNameChange: She's called "Sabrina" in the Italian, French, and Spanish dub.
* DudeMagnet: Undeniable. She may be feared, but ''everyone'' finds her attractive.
* ElegantClassicalMusician: Blends this with BlitheSpirit.
* EmotionalBruiser: A badass GeniusBruiser, who gets into fights against tall and muscular male delinquents without any problem, and is also very emotional and fragile inside.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Two girls are attracted to her; Kyōsuke's [[PsychicPower psychic]] cousin Akane and one-episode character Shiori from the anime.
* {{Expy}}: DownplayedTrope. Matsumoto was inspired (mostly in the character design) by Akina Nakamori's stage persona and Phoebe Cates's characters. She is a bit similar to Linda from ''Film/FastTimesAtRidgemontHigh'', though the latter is more of an EthicalSlut.
* FatalFlaw: She's altruistic to a fault, really.
** She puts other ones' feelings above her own ones, and this makes her hide her feelings for Kyōsuke when Hikaru is with them.
** She earned her bad reputation by saving kids or weaker people from delinquents.
** She risked death more than once when she had to help her friends (and also a delinquent girl she knew who was attacked by a gang) who were in danger.
* FirstGirlWins: In whichever timeline you look at it.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The [[MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold selfless, kind-hearted but misunderstood]], [[BrokenBird wounded and lonely]] ''melancholic''.
* FriendToAllChildren: She's great with children and has a CoolBigSis instinct towards them. The fact is also they easily like her and understand how kind she really is, and they're not afraid of her at all.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: It's mentioned she likes animals. It's also seen in her nice treatment of Jingoro and the episode where she risks her life to save a dog. This shows that she ''is'' a genuinely kind person, despite her reputation.
* GeniusBruiser: Has both brains and brawn. She's a capable fighter and a TeenGenius who scores top marks and is a gifted musician.
* GirlyBruiser: While looking feminine and beautiful, she's still a tough girl who can get into fights. Justified because her tomboyishness as a child and her life as a loner have made her a fighter.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: A classy, reserved ElegantClassicalMusician, as well as a bit flirty sometimes (but remember [[MyGirlIsNotASlut she's not a slut at all]]) and able to use her feminine appeal, being a major HeadTurningBeauty. But she is also athletic, good at fighting, a former smoker (though essentially an occasional one), and UsedToBeATomboy.
* GoodIsNotNice: SubvertedTrope: in truth, she ''is'' a very nice person, but, especially at the beginning, she can come across as harsh sometimes. Her tendency to hardly trust others is largely concerned with people who surround her, who often think she's a delinquent just based on rumours.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She's obviously a good person, and normally nice and polite, but she can come across as abrasive and violent when other ones make her angry. She's more a case of YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry.
* HeadTurningBeauty: Despite being initially feared as a delinquent, no one denies her attractiveness, all the guys in her school find her very beautiful, and EvenTheGirlsWantHer.
* TheHero: Kyōsuke is the first character you meet and maybe intented to be the protagonist, because he's the narrator and you see many things from his point of view, while in the case of Madoka you always wonder what's in her mind. However, it's Madoka who fights the ones who have bad intentions, does much more things during the series, and is absolutely [[POVBoyPosterGirl the most famous and popular character of the series]]. It's still argued who is the real protagonist of the series.
* HeroesLoveDogs: She was hit by a car to save a dog in the anime.
* HeroicSacrifice: She was about to die when she climbed a rock to go looking for Hikaru. Kyōsuke saved her with her PsychicPowers.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: She's a good, heroic and very selfless person, but [[LonersAreFreaks her loner status because of which she's an apparent delinquent]] has totally tainted her rep at school (save for Hikaru and Yuusaku). It's only after the Kasugas approach her that she starts to be seen in another light.
* HotBlooded: On the outside, she looks quite stoic and aloof. In truth, she doesn't hesitate when it comes to save weaker people from other ones who are not very well-intentioned, and when it comes to go looking Hikaru in an episode, she really risks her life (as well as other times too when she had to help other ones).
* IdealHero: Despite the image others have of her at first, she's actually loyal, heroic, kind, selfless, brave and fights to protect others.
* ImageSong: "Whispering Misty Night", "Kaze no manazashi" (used in one of the OAV's when [[spoiler: she covers for Yukari in a contest]]).
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Despite being a [[GoodIsNotSoft somewhat tough variant]], she's still a really pure-hearted person, who will never do anything bad or morally ambiguous. She just wants to do the right thing and is always morally upstanding, full stop.
* IndifferentBeauty: While she knows she's beautiful and popular at school, that's not really what she cares about.
* JapaneseDelinquents: She is feared as a sukeban, and hated due to the bad fame she acquired. She grows out of this reputation thanks to Kyōsuke and his family. The fact is that even if in truth she's not a sukeban and never was in a gang, her fights made her earn her bad reputation, and her loner status and the fact she sometimes smoked at the beginning didn't help.
* KindheartedCatLover: In an OVA, she pets Jingoro [[spoiler: (who was Kyōsuke in truth)]] and takes him to her home.
* KnightInSourArmour: Downplayed; her life as a loner isn't very happy, and she can come across as harsh and angry sometimes because of her melancholic outlook on life... Well, actually when you ''make'' her angry.
* LadyOfWar: She is feminine, composed, and graceful, but also a [[AmazonianBeauty strong, muscular]] ActionGirl who can kick your ass. She's even a martial artist!
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The composed, serious and somber Dark to Hikaru's Light.
* LonersAreFreaks: Her loner status is a motivation because of which she's a reputed delinquent.
* MagicalGirlfriend: Subverted. Kyōsuke actually has PsychicPowers, but she's the RenaissanceMan who [[TheAce excels at everything]] indeed.
* MaleGaze: Her body is constantly shown from the perspective of Kyosuke with focus on her legs, breasts, hips, etc.
* MeaningfulName: Madoka's name references the night and darkness.
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: She's feared by people at her school and believed to be a delinquent, but her real kind and selfless personality is later revealed. The other characters who were afraid of her finally understand she's an excellent friend to have.
* MoodSwinger: Her swings are more day to day than moment to moment, but it's essentially due to her frustration because of Kyōsuke's indecisiveness and incapacity to reveal his true feelings.
* MsFanservice: She is the main source of fanservice in the series and could fill out a whole page of sexy tropes.
* MsViceGirl: {{Downplayed|Trope}}, as she sometimes smokes at the beginning of the series, but she kicks it. Subverted later as she sometimes engages in underage drinking during the series, although she is generally not overindulgent.
* MyGirlIsNotASlut: She never has a boyfriend before meeting Kyosuke. Despite her mature experiences she is still a virgin because she is "not that type of girl".
* MysteriousPast: She had some kind of tough past, which made her able to fight against sukeban girls and male thugs, but it's never elaborated on.
* NiceGirl: An excellent friend to have. She has a really noble heart, and despite her aloof facade she's actually very polite and friendly. But [[BewareTheNiceOnes don't piss her off or hurt her loved ones]]!
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: PlayedWith. She's an AmazonianBeauty who is feared and believed to be a delinquent, but actually, not only the guys, but EvenTheGirlsWantHer...
* NotSoStoic: While she looks aloof, serious and distant, she's very emotional, sensitive and selfless.
* OddFriendship: With Hikaru. Madoka is reserved, deep, thoughtful and hates being a burden to other ones, while Hikaru is an extremely extroverted, boisterous and happy-go-lucky GenkiGirl.
* PitbullDatesPuppy: She's the pitbull. Or, at least, seems to be like that, because she's very tough compared to Kyosuke (even if in some situations he shows bravery too).
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Does it very often when dealing with petty people, but still remains correct and polite.
* RebelliousSpirit: Downplayed. She's ''not'' an edgy rebel, as she's still a kind and selfless NiceGirl, but she's sure free-spirited and individualistic.
* RedOniBlueOni: She's the BlueOni to Hikaru's RedOni. Where Hikaru is cheerful, extroverted and energetic, Madoka is calm, reserved and thoughtful.
* RenaissanceMan: Gets the top marks in the school, she knows martial arts, is able to play 20 different musical instruments, she can dance, dress so well she gives others fashion advice, can surf a 30 foot wave, rides a skateboard down an under-construction building in a snowstorm, etc.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Normally she's polite, calm and serious, but if she has to help anyone in need, she fits the trope.
* SecondaryCharacterTitle: Downplayed. The title Kimagure ("capricious") refers to her, even if Kyousuke is supposedly the main character. However it's pretty much a case of POVBoyPosterGirl.
* {{Sexophone}}: Her first theme song, ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8fFKdwCXlc Madoka no Teema]]'' and she's a great Sax player herself.
* SignatureItemClue: A strange case: her red straw hat was her signature item ''before'' the series, as she gave it to Kyosuke in their first encounter, but Hikaru finding it in Kyosuke's possession clues her about their actual relationship.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She never had a boyfriend before Kyōsuke: while he's [[RidiculouslyAverageGuy very average]], she likes him for being a NiceGuy, and then falls in love with him.
* SmokingIsNotCool: At the beginning of the series she gives up smoking thanks to Kyōsuke. However, it's not explained why, but in the second movie she's seen smoking sometimes, probably in her moments of anxiety because Kyōsuke disappeared.
* StatuesqueStunner: The tallest and most beautiful female character in the series.
* TheStoic: She may appear like that; however, she's definitely not emotionless.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Despite her overall nice behaviour, she tends to show both her sides (aloof or friendly) alternately. However, when she acts aloof it's essentially due to Kyōsuke's eternal indecisiveness, which makes her feel frustrated.
* TheTease: She can be somewhat coquettish and snarky towards Kyōsuke, but still in a nice way.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: She was the tomboy to Hikaru's girly girl in their childhood. Now they are LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine but both with [[GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak some tomboy tendencies]].
* TookALevelInJerkass: {{Downlayed}}. Not as much as Kyōsuke, but in the first movie, she tells him to break it off with Hikaru as soon as he can and apparently has no regards for hurting Hikaru's feelings if it means she can be with Kyosuke. However, she's not as ruthless as Kyosuke, and when she later talks to Hikaru she's a little softer, but still must make her front reality.
* TroubledButCute: A female example. She's a mysterious, fragile and reserved loner, and [[HeroWithBadPublicity has a bad reputation]], but no one can't deny that [[MsFanservice she looks gorgeous]], and she's [[MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold actually a fantastic person at heart]].
* {{Tsundere}}: One of the first well known ones. Her complex personality is favourably compared partially to more modern ones (and initially to {{Kuudere}} subtype): she can be moody, but she does much more than screaming and beating up her love interest. She tends more towards type B, because she's actually a sweet and good-natured girl, but emotionally fragile and misunderstood, and bad behaviour by other ones towards her makes her whimsical and mysterious. Well, she's a profound and complex person, and it wouldn't be right to simplify such a character, but the tsundere traits are there.
* UrbanLegendLoveLife: The Chaste Flirt variation. Kyosuke always discovers the guys she is "dating" turn out to be relatives or just friends.
* UsedToBeATomboy: As a little girl she was a tomboy with BoyishShortHair. Now she's a gorgeous, long-haired MsFanservice who embodies the Dark Feminine of the LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine trope.
* WaifFu: While [[AmazonianBeauty not tiny at all]], she's still a girl... And ''this'' girl is able to defeat male delinquents who are much taller and larger than her.
* WeaksauceWeakness: She's extremely afraid of ghosts and anything related to them. Tell her a story about ghosts and you'll see how such a brave, tough girl can become scared and reveal her fragilities. This means not that's her only fragility...
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: People wonder why she would be interested in Kyousuke. Probably because [[BecauseyouWerenicetoMe he approached her without any fear (or in spite of his fears)]], or simply because he's a NiceGuy. [[spoiler:Or perhaps she recognizes him as that superpowered boy she met and fell for five years ago.]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Seems so tough but, Dear God, she's really afraid of ghosts.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Well, she's a fighter, but still beautiful, feminine, kind-hearted and devoted to the guy she loves (and also a lot to her best friend).
* YouAreNotAlone: She's essentially a loner, at least at the beginning, but the only ones who are her friends would do anything for her (as she would too), and later the other recurring characters finally understand how kind-hearted she really is.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: It's hard to find a person who is caring, selfless and good at heart like her, but breaking her heart is a very big mistake...

[[folder: Hikaru Hiyama]]
[[quoteright:217:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orangeroad5.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/YokoOgai (pilot), Creator/ErikoHara (anime), Creator/YukaImai (CD dramas)

[[TheCutie Sweet]], [[GenkiGirl energetic]], [[TheDitz ditzy and childish]], Hikaru is Madoka's best friend. She's always happy and ''never'' understands Kyōsuke's true feelings. And when she finally does...
----
* AlliterativeName: '''Hi'''karu '''Hi'''yama
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Madoka's Veronica for Kyosuke's Archie, as she's more down to earth, always cheerful and very open about her feelings. {{Deconstructed}} as she's not as selfless as Madoka, and she's rather spoiled.
* BoyishShortHair: Her short hair is used to highlight her simple, energetic personality and make her a foil to Madoka's aloof long hair.
* BreakTheCutie: Any time she believes Kyosuke may be interested in someone else (usually Madoka) and he doesn't love her anymore, she breaks down crying. That's also her reaction when a BrainwashedAndCrazy Kyosuke was about to beat her up, in contrast to Madoka's stoic reaction when he also tries to do the same thing to her.
* CharacterExaggeration: In the anime, she goes from a genuine GenkiGirl to a straight [[{{The Ditz}} ditz]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: With borderline {{Yandere}}-like tendencies in the first movie, though this is slightly more understandable as not only she's very young but overly stressed over an extremely important audition for a movie [[spoiler: and having juuuust found out about Kyosuke and Madoka.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Has NoSenseOfPersonalSpace, and is overly naive, ditzy and hyperactive.
* TheCutie: A super-bubbly and super-sweet schoolgirl who provides ''cutesy'' comic relief, in contrast to Madoka's aloof and cool facade.
* TheDitz: She has a ditzy, quite childish personality. She's not ''really'' stupid in truth, but very naive.
* DubNameChange: "Tinetta" in the Italian dub, "Pamela" in the French Dub, "Rosa" in the Spanish dub.
* DumbBlonde: In the anime, sometimes she has traits of this. She is both blonde and airheaded, in contrast to BrainyBrunette Madoka.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Madoka, who is selfless, composed, reserved and very deep. Hikaru doesn't mind if she's clingy and annoying, and she's very bubbly, ditzy, naive and boisterous.
** To Kyōsuke, as she's anything but indecisive.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The extremely cheerful, childish, [[GenkiGirl hyper-energetic]] and talkative ''sanguine''.
* GenkiGirl: Always bubbly, happy, and very excitable.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Unlike Madoka, she was girly even as a child. Now she is an overly clingy and innocent NaiveEverygirl who is always hugging her boyfriend, but has the energy, the BoyishShortHair, and some typical traits of the {{Shorttank}} character. Like Madoka, before befriending Kyōsuke, she was an occasional smoker.
* TheGlomp: "Daaaarliiiiiing!"
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She's a cute and innocent NiceGirl with blonde hair.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Despite being close to them, she fails to notice the UnresolvedSexualTension between Kyosuke and Madoka. She seems oblivious to Kyosuke's many flaws as well.
* ImageSong: "Kogane iro no sakamichi"
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Sometimes. In one episode, she tries to be a good friend and starts cheering for Yusaku during one of his fighting matches… but she does so while hugging Kyosuke at the same time. Needless to say, this only gets Yusaku's hopes up for a few seconds and then makes him lose hope again.
* JerkassToOne: To Yusaku. She's quite cruel towards him when she hits him or finds ways to avoid to stay with him. This is due to Yusaku's EntitledToHaveYou attitude towards her.
* {{Kawaiiko}}: A cute, sweet, tomboyish GenkiGirl.
* KiddieKid: Despite being a teenager, she often acts like an overexcited child.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The energetic, bubbly and outgoing Light to Madoka's Dark. Emphasized by their [[MeaningfulName names]], personalities, and even hair color.
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Definitely. Full of energy, always happy and extremely cheerful.
* MeaningfulName: Hikaru's name references the sun and light.
* MistakenForPregnant: In chapter 95, Kyosuke thinks, she's pregnant and she thinks, she's fat. [[spoiler:Madoka knows Hikaru just grows up.]]
* MistakenIdentity: During a Hawaii-vacation, she's mistaken for Hikar'''i''' Hiyama, the daughter of a rich tycoon and gets [[spoiler: kidnapped]].
* NiceGirl: She may be annoying, but is overall a very sweet and affectionate girl who loves Kyosuke and is a good friend to Madoka.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Towards her "Daaarliiiiiing!"
* ObliviousToLove: Yusaku is obviously in love with her but she doesn't take him seriously. Even when he openly declares his love, she thinks he's just joking and gets angry at him.
* OddFriendship: With Madoka.
* OnlyFriend: She has been Madoka's best and almost only friend for several years.
* ProneToTears: Usually cheerful, but she also cries easily, usually when she has relationship problems with Kyosuke. This is not PlayedForLaughs most of the time, as it's usually done in a BreakTheCutie sympathetic way.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Energetic Red Oni to Madoka's Serious Blue Oni.
* RomanticFalseLead: Basically introduced to be the third wheel of the love triangle, because it's blatantly obvious that Kyosuke/Madoka are meant to be the OfficialCouple since day one.
* RomanticRunnerUp: Poor girl, she never had a chance to win.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Energetic Girl to Kyosuke's Savvy Guy.
* {{Shorttank}}: Hikaru mixes this with some {{Kawaiiko}} traits.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She's seen riding on a punk's motorcycle and at first likes Kyousuke for making a super 3-pointer, but soon comes to love him for being a NiceGuy. Conversely, Yuusaku tries to woo her with his karate skills, but she totally rejects him.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: When it comes to Kyosuke. Unlike Madoka, she's very open about her affection for him (however, that's also because she's 13).
* TomboynessUpgrade: As a little girl, she was the girly girl to Madoka's tomboy. In the current story, their roles are reversed, as Hikaru is now a {{Shorttank}} with BoyishShortHair (instead of GirlishPigtails like her child self), while [[UsedToBeATomboy Madoka]] is a long-haired HeadTurningBeauty.

!Kasuga Family
[[folder: Kurumi Kasuga]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurumi_8.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ChiekoHonda (anime), Creator/YukoMiyamura (CD dramas)

Sometimes [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling bratty and spiteful]], ''always'' ready to use her PsychicPowers, but a NiceGirl nonetheless, Kurumi is the [[GenkiGirl energetic]] and tomboyish one of Kyōsuke's two younger twin sisters. [[DownplayedTrope A bit]] [[TheDitz airheaded and foolish]], and [[LethalChef not good at cooking at all]]...
----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''urumi '''K'''asuga
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: She tends to tease or annoy Kyousuke much more than Manami.
* BigEater: Justified, she's the most gun-ho in the use of her powers and wastes lots of energy on it.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She has a weird but lovable personality. She's a bit of a [[{{The Ditz}} ditz]] as well.
* DubNameChange: "Simona" in the Italian dub, "Fanny" in the French dub, "Tamara" in the Spanish dub.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Foolish to Manami's Responsible.
* GenkiGirl: The most energetic of the twins.
* ImageSong: "Yasashii jealousy", alongside Manami.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She can be quite spiteful at times, but she's a good person, and usually very nice and friendly.
* KiddieKid: She can be very childish and bratty for her age.
* LethalChef: When Manami is in her day off, Kurumi tries to take over the kitchen. HilarityEnsues.
* TheMillstone: Sometimes, when it comes to using her powers without thinking about the consequences.
* PsychicPowers: Again, telekinesis and hypnosis. More than once she manages to hypnotize her brother, and she often uses her telekinesis on [[TheChewToy the family cat Jingoro]].
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to Manami's blue.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Kyousuke/Hikaru in the manga.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Manami's Girly Girl. Kurumi is boisterous, irresponsible, and a LethalChef, Manami is reserved, domestic, motherly, and a SupremeChef. Though in this case, it's Manami the one with a TomboyishPonytail.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Manami Kasuga]]
[[quoteright:240:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_76.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MichieTomizawa (anime), Creator/EmiMotoi (CD dramas)

The other one of Kyōsuke's sisters. [[YamatoNadeshiko Kind, polite and reserved]], Manami is the TeamMom (being even the substitute for her missing mom). She's calm and enjoys housework, but [[BewareTheNiceOnes when the situation calls for it, remember she's ready to use]] her PsychicPowers... She's generally very responsible, but not above Kurumi's influence.
----
* BigEater: Again, justified. She doesn't use her powers as much as Kurumi does, but they still drain her. Not to mention, she often uses them to fix Kurumi's messes...
* BlindWithoutEm: Manami has a horrible eyesight, and almost can't see without her glasses. [[spoiler: In an episode, she wants to change her lifestyle and wears contact lenses to hang around. When she's threatened by a gang and loses her lenses, Madoka runs helping Manami, and the latter isn't even sure if it's her friend Madoka who stands in front of her after defeating the gang]].
* DubNameChange: "Manuela" in the Italian, French, and Spanish dub (nicknamed "Manu" in the French one).
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Responsible to Kurumi's Foolish.
* ImageSong: "Yasashii jealousy", alongside Kurumi.
* NiceGirl: Very polite and friendly, she's also become the TeamMom of her family.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She has also a wild side, often thanks to Kurumi's influence.
* OnlySaneWoman: Sometimes, since she's the most levelheaded of the three siblings.
* PsychicPowers: Telekinetic as everyone else, might be a {{technopath}} as well.
* TheQuietOne: At least compared to her sister.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Kurumi's red.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Kyosuke/Madoka in the manga.
* TeamChef: She is depicted as the homemaker of the house, often cooking meals.
* TeamMom: She even helps keep her father in line when he's a little too lax in parenting.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Kurumi's Tomboy. Kurumi is boisterous, irresponsible, and a LethalChef, Manami is reserved, domestic, motherly, and a SupremeChef. Though in this case, it's Manami the one with a TomboyishPonytail.
* TomboyishPonytail: Inverted, she has a ponytail but she's the GirlyGirl.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She is reserved and domestic but BewareTheNiceOnes as she is prepared to use telekinesis when the situation calls for it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Takashi Kasuga]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KeiTomiyama

* GoodParents: Is shown as a gentle guy who really loves his three children and tries to raise them as well as he can.
* {{Hunk}}: He's quite muscular, and looks handsome and manly.
* {{Muggles}}: The only non-empowered Kasuga
* NiceGuy: A good person, and generally very quiet and friendly.
* TookTheWifesName: He married into the Kasuga family since his wife Akemi was the only daughter.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Akemi Kasuga]]
->Voiced by: Creator/YumiTakada

* DeathByChildbirth: She died few after the twins came to this world.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's only seen in flashbacks.
* PsychicPowers: Like her kids, a telekinetic.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She was kind and sweet, but also stubborn and willing to bend the rules a little if she felt it was the right thing to do.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Akane]]
->Voiced by: Creator/NaokoMatsui (OVA)

* FieryRedhead: She's HotBlooded and red-haired.
* PsychicPowers: Aside of being a telekinetic, she's a MasterOfDisguise who can [[MoreThanMindControl make someone else believe]] they're interacting with another person with some bits of hypnosis.
* ShipperOnDeck: Introduced as a Hikaru/Kyousuke fan. In fact, she was very pissed at Madoka because she mistakenly thought she was Kyousuke's "other woman"... until [[LoveAtFirstSight she saw her and became infatuated with her.]]
* {{Tomboy}}: She's short-haired (at least in the OVA), straight-forward and HotBlooded.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Kazuya]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ChikaSakamoto (anime)

* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Actually, an annoying younger cousin. Then again, he's just five.
* BodySurf: His other power: he can exchange bodies.
* ChildProdigy: For a five year old, Kazuya actually has a surprisingly good control over his abilities.
* HypocriticalHumor: He makes fun of Kyosuke to be indecisive. Turn out that he is in the same situation with two little girls.
* MouthyKid: He's not afraid to snark and speak his mind.
* ShipperOnDeck: He leans a lot towards Madoka/Kyosuke, though he may be too young to really understand the deal. Since he can read Kyosuke's mind, he straight up tells Hikaru that Kyosuke loves only Madoka.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Basically, Kazuya looks like a tiny Kyousuke. This is lampshaded by Komatsu and Hatta.
* {{Telepathy}}: One of the powers he has, aside for (very strong) teleportation and telekinesis.
* TheToothHurts: When he has a toothache, he doesn't want to go to the dentist, so he uses his BodySurf power to switch bodies with his cousin.
* UseYourHead: How the BodySurf power is activated by him... Or whoever got exchanged (usually Kyosuke) and wants his body back.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: The Kasuga grandparents]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KenichiOgata (Granpa), Creator/ReikoSuzuki (Grandma)

* DirtyOldMan: Kyousuke's grandpa.
* FlowerFromTheMountainTop: Granpa asked Takashi to bring him some ice from the mountain as a proof of his love for Akemi. He succeded. [[spoiler: With secret help from Akemi herself.]]
* PsychicPowers: Which the Kasuga kids inherited.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Jingoro]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KenichiOgata

The Kasuga's long-suffering, plump calico cat.
----
* ButtMonkey: Often a target of the twins' PsychicPowers.
* CanonForeigner: Only exists in the anime. [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools He's actually hilarious]].
* MegaNeko: In the ''Film/TopGun'' parody episode.
[[/folder]]

!Other characters
[[folder: Yusaku Hino]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MasamiKikuchi (anime)

A young karateka. He's 13 and [[{{Yandere}} obsessed]] with Hikaru since his childhood. He's rude and violent towards Kyōsuke, thinking he's a playboy who just plays with Hikaru's feelings.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Very dark-skinned compared to all the other characters.
* AntiHero: He's always angry because of his unrequited selfish love feelings towards Hikaru, and because of the feelings she has for Kyōsuke. Rude, violent and absurdly self-centered, but an unlucky ButtMonkey as well: he mixes traits of a ClassicalAntiHero and a ByronicHero.
* ButtMonkey: He gets badly injured after his stunts, and almost always something unlucky happens to him.
* TheChewToy: Among the few who are ''more'' unlucky than Kyosuke. While Kyosuke usually gets a couple of slapsticky humiliations in every episode, Yusaku gets hurt or humiliated almost every time he's on screen. And unlike Kyosuke, he will always be rejected by the girl he loves.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Usually a huge ButtMonkey, but there are rare times where he can actually make use of his physical strength. [[YankTheDogsChain It never lasts long.]]
* CrazyJealousGuy: Hikaru makes it clear that she doesn't want to date him, yet he keeps going on no matter what she says and often acts like she's his personal property.
* EntitledToHaveYou: He feels the need to possess Hikaru and acts like she belongs to him, even if she is not interested.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The angry and [[CrazyJealousGuy very jealous]] ''choleric'', always rejected by Hikaru.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He thinks Kyosuke is a womanizing jerk who is just playing with Hikaru's feelings. In reality, Kyosuke has no bad intentions, he is just too indecisive and cowardly to make his feelings clear about which girl he actually wants.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rude, violent, obsessed with Hikaru and extremely self-centered, almost to sociopathic levels, but he's also ready to help his friends when they're in danger.
* LoveMartyr: No matter how much Hikaru is mean to him, he always remains madly in love with her.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: The rude and abrasive Roguish Male to Noble Male Kyōsuke.
* StrawLoser: He's dismissed by the only girl he loves and nothing goes right for him. He's so desperate that he makes Kyosuke look good.
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: To Hikaru.
* {{Yandere}}: Towards Hikaru, though his self-inflicted bad luck interfers with this.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Master]]

* CoolBigBro: He's friendly, sympathetic, and a good confidant for Madoka.
* DeadpanSnarker: He's a little snarky sometimes.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: He's just known as "Master", and his real name is unknown.
* GentleGiant: He's a tall and chubby NiceGuy.
* NiceGuy: Kind, polite and supportive towards Madoka and her friends, as well as a little snarky sometimes.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Seiji Komatsu and Kazuya Hatta]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KeiichiNanba (Komatsu) and Naoki Tatsuta (Hatta)

Kyōsuke's friends and classmates. They're [[LovableSexManiac funny and absurdly lecherous, obsessed with pretty girls]], and like Kyōsuke's sisters. They're among the ones who initially think Madoka is just a violent delinquent, but it's later revealed they barely knew her, and they obviously start to like her...
----
* ButtMonkey: Almost every time they show up, ''something'' happens to them.
* {{Classical Anti Hero}}es: Are they ever! They're unlucky, extremely lecherous, BookDumb, lazy, and often behave cowardly and pathetic. They fit this trope to a T.
* DumbassHasAPoint: Komatsu is mostly a goofy, BookDumb pervert, but is the first character to realize that Kyosuke may have PsychicPowers and even comes close to expose him.
* FatAndSkinny: Hatta is fat, Komatsu is skinny.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: At the beginning, they think Madoka is just a violent delinquent, and also that she has a great sexual experience, just based on her bad reputation. They actually knew nothing about the person she really is, but after having known the [[MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold true kind and selfless Madoka]], at the end of the series, before she moves to the U.S.A., they admit they would have liked to have a closer relationship with her. Yes, ''[[DoubleMeaning closer]]''...
* LovableSexManiac: Both are obssessed with sex and girls.
* PluckyComicRelief: They have no real roles in the story, other than being funny.
* StrawLoser: Both of them. Kyosuke has some traits of the typical LoserProtagonist, but at least he hangs out with two guys who are bigger losers than him and largely used as comic relief.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Usually seen together.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Madoka's parents]]
->Voiced by: Creator/YoshikoSakakibara (Madoka's mom), Hideyuki Umezu (Madoka's dad)

* ElegantClassicalMusician: Madoka's mother is a famous violinist and hinted to be the one she inherited her looks from.
* GoodParents: While they're workaholic and Madoka almost never sees them, they're still good people. Just see Madoka: she may have grown up quite fast, but she's still a caring and kind-hearted person with a strong set of morals.
* MistakenForCheating: [[spoiler: Madoka once runs away from home when she mistakenly thinks her dad's two-timing her mom.]]
* ParentsAsPeople: They love Madoka and she loves them back, but they travel through the world due to their job and only appear counted times. [[HeWhoMustNotBeSeen And we never see their faces clearly.]]
* UnnamedParent: Their names are never revealed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Madoka's older sister]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MariaKawamura (anime)

* NoNameGiven: Her name is not revealed.
* PromotionToParent: She raised her little sister Madoka in lieu of their parents because of the Ayukawas' heavy workload, until she got married.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Yukari]]
->Voiced by: Creator/EikoYamada (speaking voice), Kanako Wada (singing voice)

* CoolBigSis: A teasing, pretty young woman in her twenties, fond of teasing Kyousuke.
* IdolSinger: She is the singer of her and her boyfriend Shu's pop/rock band.
* ImageSong: "Salvia no hana no you ni"
* MrsRobinson: Kyousuke thinks she wants him, at first, and imagines the scenario.
* ShipperOnDeck: Ships her boyfriend's cousin Madoka with Kyousuke. She even uses a long red thread [[RedStringOfFate to kinda link them up]] as she's performing.
* TheTease: Though she does it to help Kyōsuke and Madoka.
* {{Tsundere}}: A type B, normally nice and friendly but you better not make her angry.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Shuu]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ShigeruNakahara

* RomanticFalseLead: Averted. Kyousuke ''thought'' he was this, but he is Madoka's older cousin. Having Shuu's ''actual'' girlfriend Yukari playfully mess with the idea in his head didn't help.
* SlapSlapKiss: He and Yukari.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's an elegant, good-looking and tall guy.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Umao and Ushiko]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KatsumiSuzuki and Creator/ChisatoNakajima

* TheCameo: Umao is seen for a few seconds in TheMovie, when he begs Ushiko via TV to come back to him and [[spoiler: their baby]]. But Ushiko was PutOnABus.
* SayMyName: "Umao-san!" "Ushiko-san!"
* ShoutOutToShakespeare: They can quote ''[[Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet Romeo and Juliet's]]'' "Wherefore art thou..." '''FOR HOURS,''' as seen when Umao complains in the first episode about his delay for work.
* SickeninglySweethearts: "Umao-san!" "Ushiko-san!"
* YuppieCouple: Their appearances in an episode, which become a RunningGag, generally consist of them saying the same romantic lines to one another, followed by a chaotic event involving some of the primary characters.
