The protagonist of the series. She is the twelve-year-old gravekeeper of her little village, having been given the role when her mother Alfa passed away. Her peaceful life is torn apart when a man named Hampnie Hambart comes to her village and massacres everyone but her. After confronting him, she starts to travel with him, believing he knows something about the truth of her village that he isn't telling her.

[[spoiler:It turns out that he is her long-lost father, and after they manage to reconcile, he dies and she buries him.]] Afterwards, she decides to save the world that God has abandoned, and thus begins to travel the world with her new companions.

* AdaptationDyeJob: Compared to the light novels, her hair is a darker shade of gold in the anime.
* [[AllLovingHero All-Loving Heroine]]
* [[spoiler:AlliterativeName: Ai Astin]]
* BadassAdorable: She's a surprisingly capable fighter, and this is best shown when she [[spoiler:rescues Hampnie from a group of undead psychopaths]].
* CheerfulChild: She usually maintains a cheerful attitude about everything.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: While she has her bratty moments, she is a sweet, kind girl.
* CompressedHair: Somehow she manages to fit all that hair underneath her gravekeeper hat.
* DisappearedDad: Her mother told her that her father was named Hampnie Hambart. When a man bearing that name comes to her village, he says it's not possible for him to be her father. [[spoiler:Much to his surprise, he actually is.]]
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: The girls of Goran Academy think she's the cutest thing ever.
* HairAntennae
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold
* HalfHumanHybrid: She's the daughter of a gravekeeper and a human. While she can't sense the presence of the dead like other gravekeepers, she can properly bury them just the same.
* HappilyAdopted: By Youki and Anna, and [[spoiler:later by Julie after Hampnie dies]].
* HumanMomNonHumanDad: Inverted; her father was human while her mother was a gravekeeper.
* ImageSong: Has a beautiful one called [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppXkHtdRFm0 "Hohoemi no Ame."]]
* MissingMom: Her mother passed away a few years before the series begins.
* NiceGirl: Sweet, friendly, and kind-hearted, you [[TheWoobie really have to feel sorry for this poor young girl]].
* NiceHat: Her gravekeeper hat.
* PluckyGirl: In a world without God, she's surprisingly optimistic. Then again, if she's going to save the world, this is the attitude she needs.
* RapunzelHair: Especially in the anime.
* SavingTheWorld: Her goal, and part of her journey involves learning what exactly it means to save the world.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks like a mini-clone of her mother.
* SuperStrength: Not as much as Scar, but when fighting [[spoiler:the group that captured Hampnie]], she shows a surprising amount of strength for a little girl. Of course, she is half-gravekeeper.
* TenderTears: She has her moments, particularly [[spoiler:after she has to bury her father]].
* TokenMiniMoe: She's the youngest person in the world at twelve years old, an anomaly in a world where people stopped giving birth fifteen years ago.
* TragicKeepsake: Her mother's shovel.
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Part of her regular gravekeeper outfit.
* WideEyedIdealist
* ZettaiRyouiki: [[http://gallery.minitokyo.net/view/623767 An outfit she wears]] in the later novels is Grade A.

!!Hampnie Hambart / [[spoiler:Kizuna Astin]]
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_hampnie_6947.jpg]]

An immortal gunslinger known as "The Man-Eating Toy," and the one who slaughters Ai's village. Since he knows more about her village than he lets on, Ai follows him, hoping to learn the truth. She also believes him to be her long-lost father, which he denies. He is searching for a woman named Hana.

[[spoiler:He also desires death above all else, fearing that he may someday be the last living human being in the world, and he wants a happy death surrounded by his friends and family. His lover Hana turns out to be Alfa, Ai's mother, and after being captured and tortured by Hiko and his undead followers, he learns that Ai really is his daughter, and because he is bleeding to death while with family (Ai) and a friend (Julie), his wish for a happy death comes true and he dies for real. After spending a day with Ai as an undead, she buries him beside his lost lover.]]

* [[spoiler:AbusiveParents: While he is unaware that he is Ai's father, his initial treatment of her is undeniably child abuse.]]
* TheAgeless: He hasn't aged at all since he became immortal at age seventeen.
* AlliterativeName
* BadassLongcoat
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Being in poor health due to his albinism, he wished for immortality. [[spoiler:He later realized that meant he could be left as the last living human being on earth.]]
* {{Bishounen}}
* [[spoiler:DeadStarWalking]]
* DeathSeeker: According to him, an immortal only desires one thing: death.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's not a particularly kind person.
* [[spoiler:KilledOffForReal: When he gets the "happy death" he wished for.]]
* MeaningfulName: In-series, "Hampnie Hambart" is the name of a toy that kept working even after it broke, and it's implied he took that name for himself when he became immortal. He also tells Ai it's likely her mother took that name from the same toy.
** His real name [[spoiler:Kizuna can mean "bonds," and the bonds he shared with Julie and Ai happen to be the cause of his death.]]
* NobleDemon: Hampnie unapologetically massacres Ai's village and is very cruel, but he also answers all her questions and requests her services as a gravekeeper for his victims, and assists her with her duties while she is unconscious.
* RedEyesTakeWarning
* ResurrectiveImmortality: If he dies, he'll just come back good as new, all wounds healed. (And while he calls himself a monster because of this, [[ImmortalLifeIsCheap he has no problem taking advantage of it if he needs to heal quickly.]]) However, if he suffers extreme trauma before dying, he'll lose his memories of that death.
* SirSwearsALot: He's the most foul-mouthed of all the characters, especially in the dub.
* [[spoiler:TookALevelInKindness: He starts acting more like a decent person after he learns Ai is his daughter. Too bad he dies shortly afterwards.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart
* WhoWantsToLiveForever
* WouldHurtAChild: He has no problems beating up a child half his size, or even pointing a gun at her and threatening to shoot.

!!Scar
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_scar_3962.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MamikoNoto (JP), Genevieve Simmons (EN)

A true gravekeeper. She is polite and always smiling, but she has no emotions and her only role is to bury the dead. After [[spoiler:Hampnie dies]], she joins Ai on her journey.

[[spoiler:In Ortus, she adopts Ulla's twin sister Celica, who has been frozen in time and is still a baby. Scar then starts to experience emotions, which leads to an identity crisis. She later comes to terms with her newfound emotions, having become human.]]

* BornAsAnAdult: Gravekeepers are "born" as adults when they come down to Earth.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Both her hair and eyes are a pale purple.
* EmotionlessGirl: Gravekeepers have no need for human emotions.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: She has a small one on her right eyebrow.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: She's polite, soft-spoken, and purple is her main color.
* [[spoiler:HappilyAdopted: In Ortus, the baby Celica is quite happily adopted by Scar.]]
* IHaveManyNames: Gravekeepers don't have much of a need for a personal identity, and when Hampnie asks her name, she has a long list of names she has been called. However, in the manga, when Hampnie tries to call her something else, she's quite insistent that he calls her Scar. [[spoiler:This becomes FridgeBrilliance when we learn that gravekeepers are usually "born" as groups of identical individuals, and having even just a small scar would set a gravekeeper apart from their identical "siblings," and this foreshadows Scar's eventual identity crisis.]]
* [[spoiler:ImpliedLoveInterest: To Julie.]]
* TheQuietOne: Of Ai's companions, she speaks the least and tends to keep to herself. [[spoiler:Even when she starts developing human emotions, she's still not very talkative.]]
* StepfordSmiler: She's always smiling, but only out of politeness.
* SuperStrength: A trait of gravekeepers. She can flip grown men one-handedly and without breaking a sweat.
* [[spoiler:WhatIsThisFeeling: After adopting Celica, she starts experiencing human emotions, and this leads to an identity crisis. She runs away to Story Circle, the place where gravekeepers are born, and when Ai and the others find her, Julie promises to protect her and Celica, and she rejoins them, having wished to become human.]]
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Purple Hair]]

!!Julie Sakuma Dmitriyevich
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_julie_5856.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KeijiFujiwara (JP), Creator/DavidMatranga (EN)

Hampnie's childhood friend. He was happily married with a wife and a daughter, but seven years prior to the start of the series, his wife died of an illness, and he hid her from the gravekeepers for a year until Hampnie found them and destroyed her body. A month before the series, his daughter also died of an illness, and after a gravekeeper buried her, Julie decided to hunt down Hampnie for revenge. However, because he knows of Hampnie's immortality, Hampnie deduces that what Julie truly desires is to be killed by him.

[[spoiler:Despite his hatred for Hampnie, he does help Ai save him from Hiko, and his presence helps give Hampnie the death he wants, since he still saw Julie as a friend.]] After [[spoiler:Hampnie is buried]], Julie joins Ai on her quest to save the world, acting as her guardian and protector.

* AbsurdlyYouthfulFather: According to Hampnie, Julie is 32-33, which means he was only 17-18 when his daughter was born. It's hard to say if this trope was the intention or if it's just a case of WritersCannotDoMath.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: While not unattractive, he has a more rugged appearance in the light novels and manga, and the anime softened his features to make him look more {{Bishounen}}.
* BadassLongcoat
* DeathSeeker: Due to the pain of losing his family, he initially wants to die for the sake of revenge, believing that will give his death more meaning than simply killing himself, and he knows he can't win against the immortal Hampnie. After [[spoiler:Hampnie dies]], he regains his will to live and acts as a guardian to Ai.
* DeclarationOfProtection: [[spoiler:After finding Scar when she runs away to Story Circle, he promises to protect her and Celica. When Ai and Alice think that sounds like a proposal, he also adds that he'll protect them too.]]
* IcyBlueEyes: At first, before he starts to warm up to Ai and the others.
* [[spoiler:ImpliedLoveInterest: To Scar.]]
* NameOrderConfusion: "Dmitriyevich" is a Russian {{Patronymic}}, but according to RussianNamingConvention, it's supposed to come after the ''given'' name, not surname. This combined with the SpellMyNameWithAnS listed below make it really hard to figure out what the author was going for when he came up with Julie's name.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In the bonus episode, he's reluctant to waste time at a hot spring, though he relents at the insistence of the other characters. However, once they're actually there, he's the most excited about enjoying the hot spring.
* PapaWolf[=/=]OverprotectiveDad: He moves between these tropes, usually when Ai is in some kind of trouble.
* ParentalSubstitute: Toward Ai and [[spoiler:Celica]].
* PermaStubble
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it Julie or Yuri? "Dmitriyevich" is about as Russian as you can get, but his given name in [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseRomanization katakana]] is spelled differently (ユリー) than the Russian male name usually is (ユーリ). In fact, ユリー is usually how the feminine German name Julie is spelled in Japanese, and since "Sakuma" is a Japanese surname, it's likely his name is meant to be a combination of different ethnicities. For even more confusion, Crunchyroll and Hulu's official subtitles use "Julie," while Sentai's dub uses "Yuri."
* SuicideByCop: His true goal when he attacks Hampnie, although Hampnie refuses to kill him.

!!Alfa / [[spoiler:Hana]]
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_alfa_8715.jpg]]
->Voiced by: YukoGoto (JP - drama CD), Creator/RinaSato (JP - anime), Allison Sumrall (EN)

Ai's mother and the first gravekeeper. She passed away a few years before the series begins. [[spoiler:Unusually for a gravekeeper, she desired to create a Heaven on Earth for the deceased, and the village she tended was composed entirely of those who had died. One of her previous names was Hana, the same as the woman Hampnie is looking for.]]

* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Ai remembers her quite fondly, and everything we see of her does suggest she was a good mother to her daughter.
* EmotionlessGirl: Averted, unlike other gravekeepers. In flashbacks we see she was quite expressive and cheerful. [[spoiler:Julie also later states she was a unique gravekeeper.]]
* HartmanHips
* [[spoiler:TheLostLenore: To Hampnie.]]
* [[spoiler:NakedFirstImpression: As seen in Hampnie's flashback of their first meeting, she's completely naked when he encounters her. [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl She isn't bothered by it at all.]]]]
* PosthumousCharacter

!!Kiriko Zubreska
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_kiriko_2299.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/TetsuyaKakihara (JP), Tyler Galindo (EN)

A government official from Ortus, the city of the dead. Ai and the others first meet him after he was nearly killed by bandits, and he invites them into Ortus. He is also the tutor to Ulla, the princess of Ortus. He believes she will be the one to save the world.

* [[spoiler:ArtificialHuman: He is made from the body parts of five different people, who had asked a witch to grant them a child. He ages more slowly than other humans, and he's not quite living or deceased, as Ulla's DeadlyGaze doesn't work on him while Scar never tries to bury him.]]
* {{Bishounen}}
* [[spoiler:BornAsAnAdult: Born as a teenager, actually. When he was created from his five "parents," he was also born with all of their knowledge.]]
* IdiotHair: He's definitely no idiot, being Ulla's tutor, but he does have a persistent strand of hair that sticks up.
* {{Kuudere}}: He's rather standoffish toward Ai and the others, but he shows a softer side of himself toward Ulla.
* VoiceForTheVoiceless: He often speaks for Ulla.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair

!!Ulla Eulesse Hecmatika
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_ulla_4317.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MikakoKomatsu (JP), Creator/EmilyNeves (EN)

The princess of Ortus. When Kiriko introduces her to Ai, they quickly become close friends. She is often seen in long robes with her face completely covered, and she communicates through Kiriko and writing.

[[spoiler:She is also the Idol of Murder and the only living being in all of Ortus. When she was born, her resentful mother wished for all humans to die, and while the unborn Ulla unconsciously accepted that wish, her twin sister Celica rejected it. Celica was thus frozen in time and is still a baby, and when Ulla realizes that Celica is calling for Scar, she allows Scar to adopt her sister. She had some idea about her powers, but she doesn't know the whole truth until Ai tells her.]]

* [[spoiler:DeadlyGaze: And it's not just her eyes that can kill the living, but also her voice and very touch.]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: She doesn't get a whole lot of sun.
* FlowerInHerHair: Wears a red flower in her hair.
* NiceGirl: She's kind and soft-spoken, [[spoiler:which makes it all the more shocking when it's revealed she's been unknowingly killing people since the day she was born.]]
* RapunzelHair
* RavenHairIvorySkin
* [[spoiler:SiblingYinYang: She accepted her mother's wish, while her twin sister Celica rejected it. Ulla also aged normally while Celica remained as a baby for fifteen years, frozen in time.]]
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Her middle name is sometimes spelled as "Euleus," but it's shown [[http://kami-nichi.wikia.com/wiki/File:Ep0500105.png on-screen as "Eulesse,"]], and the official subs also use that spelling.
* TooManyBelts: They help keep all those robes on.
* TheVoiceless: She can speak, but her bindings don't allow her to. [[spoiler:This is because her voice can kill the living.]]

!!Alice Color
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunday_without_god_alis_5603.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KoukiUchiyama (JP), Mike Yager (EN)

A mysterious boy Ai meets while at Goran Academy. He believes he and Ai are similar and he asks for her help. However, his definition of "saving the world" seems to be different from hers.

[[spoiler:His classmates of Class 3-4 in the sealed city of Ostia are trapped in an [[GroundhogDayLoop endless loop that repeats every July 28th]], and he wants to destroy that world so he can free them. When he died while saving Dee from falling out a window, his classmates wished to reset time to prevent his death, thus trapping themselves in said time loop. When Alice realizes the truth, the seal begins to break, and he's about to disappear when Ai makes the wish to save him.]]

* AdaptationDyeJob: His eyes are red in the light novels, but purple in the anime.
* [[spoiler:BackFromTheDead: Played with. The "Alice" who died before the time loop began is still dead (he even says he was buried by a gravekeeper), but before the seal breaks completely Ai wishes for the "Alice" who lived through all those time loops to be able to continue to exist in the outside world. Her wish comes true, much to his surprise.]]
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He wished for ImprobableAimingSkills [[spoiler:so he could be better at basketball. However, he realized a skill like that is cheating, so he had to quit his beloved sport.]]
* {{Bishounen}}
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In the novels both his hair and eyes are red. (The anime made his eyes purple to contrast with Dee's purple hair and red eyes.)
* [[spoiler:DeadAllAlong: His death was the catalyst for Class 3-4 trapping themselves in a GroundhogDayLoop. When he realizes this, the seal starts to break.]]
* GunsAkimbo: In one novel illustration he's shown with two guns, and thanks to his special ability he doesn't even have to worry about a loss of accuracy.
* IdiotHair: Although from some angles it looks more HairAntennae.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: To Ai.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: His special skill "Buzzer Beater" [[AlwaysAccurateAttack allows him to hit any target with perfect accuracy]], no matter how improbable.
* [[spoiler:NotGrowingUpSucks: Implied in his conversation with Julie in the bonus episode, as he hasn't aged at all since the seal over Ostia was formed.]]
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: He's usually shown in his Ostia school uniform.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it Alis or Alice? Crunchyroll's official subtitles and fansubs use "Alis," but in episodes 11 and 12 his name is shown as "Alice Color," and the subs on Sentai's BD/DVD release also use "Alice."

!!Dee Ensy Stratmitos

A ghostly girl Ai meets while at Goran Academy and Alice's companion. She is known as "Whisper" and the "Witch of the West," and she can secretly whisper suggestions and commands to people, compelling them toward certain actions. In fact, she did this once to Ai so that she would head to Goran's clocktower to meet Alice.

[[spoiler:However, despite her ghostly appearance she isn't actually dead. While in Ostia, she leads Ai to believe that she was the one who died, and her true goal is to destroy the outside world so that Alice will have no choice but to remain in Ostia, since because she loves him, she doesn't want him to disappear.]]

* BlessedWithSuck: While being a ghost has its advantages, the bonus episode shows that Dee is sometimes bothered by being unable to physically feel anything.
* {{Bokukko}}: She uses the masculine "[[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns boku]]" to refer to herself.
* [[spoiler:BroughtDownToNormal: When the seal over Ostia breaks, she regains her physical body for good.]]
* CatSmile: When she's feeling mischievous or whimsical.
* CompellingVoice: She can manipulate people by secretly whispering suggestions to them.
* CryCute: [[spoiler:She breaks down when Alice accepts that he died years ago and starts to disappear.]]
* CuteGhostGirl
* CuteLittleFang: She sometimes has one to go with her CatSmile.
* GirlishPigtails
* TheGlomp: While in the sealed city Ostia, she has a physical body, and she's very touchy-feely with Ai.
* [[spoiler:HopelessSuitor: She is in love with Alice, but he's oblivious to her feelings and seems to be falling for Ai.]]
* InSeriesNickname: "Whisper" and "Witch of the West." She gets angry if someone doesn't include "of the West" when calling her a witch.
* [[spoiler:LoveMakesYouEvil: Everything she does is to prevent Alice from disappearing, as she is in love with him.]]
* MagicSkirt: No flying ghost should leave home without one.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Toward Ai.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:For one, she's not even dead. Because she's still alive, she can't physically leave Ostia, so she manifests as a ghost in the outside world.]]
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Like Alice, she usually wears her Ostia school uniform.
* SmallGirlBigGun: One novel illustration shows her with a rather large submachine gun.
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Purple Hair]]
* ZettaiRyouiki: Her school uniform is Grade A, and so is [[http://gallery.minitokyo.net/view/623772 the casual outfit she wears in the later novels]].
