[[folder:The Group]]
* BadassCrew
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Everyone except Kagome, who has a [[OpenMindedParent living mother]].
* DatePeepers: Every time Inuyasha and Kagome or Miroku and Sango have any romantic moments, the rest of the group will be spying and/or eavesdropping.
* DeadpanSnarker: They all have their moments.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: The women of the group often tend to physically attack the men for annoying them or crossing a line, and everyone just rolls with it.
* FireForgedFriends: Some more than others, but the entire group has been united in their common goal of taking down Naraku for {{revenge}} at what he's done to them.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kirara are all demons and/or half-demons who fight other demons.
* ItsPersonal: Naraku hurt them and/or ruined all of their lives in some manner.
* OnlyOneName: Everybody except Kagome.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The gang consists of a [[HalfHumanHybrid half-dog demon]], a time-displaced OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent, a DirtyOldMonk, a demon hunter, a [[{{Sizeshifter}} size-changing]] cat demon, and a seven-year-old {{kitsune}}.
* ShipperOnDeck: With Inuyasha/Kagome. Whenever Inuyasha and Kikyo have a romantic moment, the rest of the group is miffed with his indecisiveness. Especially with Sango, who even uses a ''sit command'' on Inuyasha. It obviously doesn't work, however.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: In the beginning, particularly between Inuyasha and Kagome.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Inuyasha with ''everyone''.

Inuyasha is the son of a dog {{youkai}} and a human woman. Persecuted throughout his childhood due to his halfbreed nature, he sought to use the Shikon Jewel to become a full youkai, but fell in love with the Jewel's human guardian, the {{miko}} Kikyo. Fifty years prior to the start of the series, Kikyo sealed Inuyasha to a tree with a magical arrow; when Kagome releases him, he resumes his mission to obtain the Shikon Jewel, which requires him to team up with Kagome to track down the broken Jewel's many shards.

----
* AbsurdlySharpClaws: He can easily rip apart demons and humans with them, and his Iron Reaver Soul Stealer/Sankon Tessō attack, according to WordOfGod, can slice clean through an industrial steel support beam at full power.
* AccidentalPervert: Whenever Kagome is bathing in the feudal era, it's almost a guarantee that Inuyasha will see her naked.
* AesopAmnesia: You would think that after all the dozens of times Kagome's made him "sit" for annoying her or being rude, he would just learn to keep his mouth shut.
* AirplaneArms: Often runs like this.
* AllGenesAreCoDominant: He's half dog-demon and half human, so he usually looks like a human with [[AllThereInTheManual akita inu ears]], fangs and claws. His abilities are somewhere between that of a demon and that of a human, with an odd twist on the transformation ability.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: He was bullied and picked on for his half-demon heritage his whole life.
* AnimalMotifs[=/=]AnimalStereotypes: The dog
* AntiHero: The reason he had to wear the necklace of subjugation was because he used to be as bad the rest of the demons after the jewel. He slowly mellows into a heroic-yet-rude-and-selfish good guy.
** ByronicHero[=/=]NinetiesAntiHero[=/=]NominalHero: At the beginning of the series, though thanks to CharacterDevelopment he slowly mellows into a KnightInSourArmor as the series progresses.
** BarbarianHero: Given that he's lived on his own away from civilization since he was a small child, this also counts too.
* AttackAttackAttack[=/=]LeeroyJenkins: His usual method of dealing with enemies, though it's usually the reason he gets his ass kicked, too. In the first movie, Menomaru even [[ExploitedTrope uses this to his advantage]] to dupe Inuyasha into freeing his [[SealedEvilInACan father]].
* AttackReflector: His Bakuryuuha[=/=]Backlash Wave technique uses the Wind Scar to send an opponent's attack right back at them, but can only be used against enemies of a similar power level.
* AxCrazy: His SuperpoweredEvilSide.
* {{Badass}}: The most notable of the main cast, who are all very behind him in terms of raw power.
* BarbarianLonghair: His hair is as long as Sesshomaru's but considerably more unkempt.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He always wanted to become a pureblood demon. When he discovers the savage brutality of his SuperpoweredEvilSide, however, he changes his mind.
* {{BFS}}: The transformed Tessaiga.
* BigEater: As he is a half demon son of a huge dog demon, it's [[JustifiedTrope justified]].
* BigFancyHouse: He and his MissingMom lived in a ''huge'' Japanese traditional mansion, according to the flashbacks.
* {{Bishonen}}: Though not as feminine as, say, [[AloofBigBrother Sesshoumaru]] or [[BigBad Naraku]], he's still quite slender and youthful-looking.
* BloodKnight: Especially in his full yokai form.
* BloodyMurder: Hijinkessou / Blades of Blood, one of his earliest and least-used attacks, involves digging his claws into a wound and slinging his own blood at the enemy.
* BlowYouAway: Tessaiga's early abilities are loosely wind-based, particularly the Wind Scar.
* BringMyRedJacket: His clothes are all red and as the main fighter he gets injured often, tainting them in blood. Ironic since his clothes are supposed to be an armor against sharp objects.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Whenever a new moon appears.
** {{Lunacy}}: Inverted.
* BrutalHonesty: He seemed to be about six when he was orphaned, and seems to have survived most of his childhood rejected by both human and {{Youkai}}, no surprise he forgot what tact he'd learned from his mother.
* ButtMonkey: Generally thanks to the restraining necklace and not helped by his jerkish behavior. Thankfully he's an IronButtmonkey.
* CallingYourAttacks: Almost everyone does at least a little of this, but Inuyasha does it nearly every time.
* CardCarryingVillain: In episode 3, he freely admits to Kagome and Kaede that he's one of the "wrong hands" that they're trying to keep the Shikon Jewel shards away from.
* CasualDangerDialog: In the English dub, his response to Sesshomaru's dog transformation stands out:
-->"Yeah, yeah, 'roar roar' to you too, buddy."
* TheChewToy: This guy can never catch a moment of peace because he always (sometimes unintentionally) perks his allies which don't take him very seriously.
* CockFight: Inuyasha + Koga = this, especially if Kagome is present.
* CounterAttack: Bakuryuuha / Backlash Wave.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Especially when Koga's involved with Kagome.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His dad died from a demon dragon wound, he and his mother had to suffer years of discrimination due to being a half demon and another demon turned his lover against him. Not to mention the implications of being hunted down by humans and demons alike when trying to survive after his mother's death.
* DeadlyUpgrade: When his youkai blood goes out of control.
* DeadpanSnarker: One good example is this exchange between Kagome in Episode 31:
-->'''Kagome''': You like being with me, don't you?\\
'''Inuyasha''': I dunno. Is it a trick question?
* DeclarationOfProtection: Countless times, to both Kagome and Kikyo, with expected shades of "I failed to protect her" with the latter. Things do, of course, get messy whenever both happen to be in danger at the same time.
* DefrostingIceKing: Thanks to his comrades.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: He pulls one off against Sesshomaru after the latter steals the Tessaiga, allowing him to [[TorsoWithAView punch a hole through his torso]] with one arm and giving Inuyasha the opportunity to slice off his other arm and take back the sword.
* {{Determinator}}: He just keeps going, no matter how bad the odds are or how injured he is, even when he's human.
* DistinguishingMark: His dog ears mark him as a half-demon.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: Has never worn shoes a day of his life, nor has he really needed them (unless in human form). No one seems to care, not even in the modern era.
* DogsAreDumb[=/=]IdiotHero: Inuyasha is half dog-youkai and is extremely simple-minded as a result. While it makes his fighting instincts very powerful, Inuyasha is clueless when it comes to higher-reasoning.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: More often than not, his "[[BroughtDownToNormal period of weakness]]" occurs during a situation that could easily be resolved with his demonic powers.
* EmpathicWeapon: In order to use the Tessaiga's true power, he has to be actively thinking about protecting humans.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Jakotsu of the Band of Seven is [[FoeYay infatuated with him]].
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's crass, hot-headed, and violent, but there are plenty of lines that even he won't cross:
** In the filler "The Tragic Love Song of Destiny" anime special, he refuses to attack Kikyo for the Shikon Jewel when she's badly injured and can't fight back, explaining to her that he doesn't "[[HonorBeforeReason play dirty]]"; he even personally saves Kaede from Mistress Centipede while refusing to [[HostageForMacguffin take her hostage for the jewel]] as Centipede intended to do.
** When he fights Tōkajin, the latter demands that he eat some of the Ninmenka's fruit before their fight; given [[HumanResources the source of the fruit]], Inuyasha is quick to turn it down.
** When he meets Shiori, he adamantly refuses to kill a fellow half-demon, let alone a [[WouldntHurtAChild little girl]].
** When he and Sesshomaru discover that their father only intended for Sesshomaru to master the Meidō Zangetsuha technique and then give it to Inuyasha, Inuyasha agrees with Sesshomaru that that was [[AbusiveParents cruel of their father]].
* {{Expy}}:
** A combination of [[RanmaOneHalf Ranma]] and [[{{Berserk}} Guts]].
** On a second look he also shares many traits with [[Literature/JourneyToTheWest Sun Wukong]], including being sealed in the past, following and protecting the one who released him, having a restraining bolt and a size-shifting weapon and fighting demons while slowing growing more compassionate and decent.
* EyeColorChange: Whenever Inuyasha [[SuperpoweredEvilSide goes full demon]] he gains [[RedEyesTakeWarning red sclera]] and blue irises. His eyes also change from gold to a very human gray when he undergoes his monthly transformation to his human form.
* EyeScream: In the manga, Sesshomaru cuts out his right eye to get at the [[TreasureChestCavity black pearl that links to their father's grave]]; the eye regenerated over the course of the next few chapters.
* FaceFault: When Kagome says "Sit!" / "Sit, boy!" (Japanese = "Osuwari!" an imperative form of "to sit" that is used, among other things, as a command for dogs.)
* FacialMarkings: When his youkai blood overloads his system he gains jagged purple stripes on the sides of his face.
* FingerTwitchingRevival: When he wakes from Kikyo's seal, the audience is treated to a close-up of his right hand twitching.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: Whenever he goes to Kagome's era. It's not really touched upon much, but he was once amazed at the sight of a TV.
* ForcedToWatch: After getting AllWebbedUp by Gatenmaru in episode 51, Gatenmaru decides to [[KickTheDog show Inuyasha just how helpless he is before he dies]] by making him watch as he kills and eats helpless village women [[ForTheEvulz for fun]]. [[AssholeVictim He and his men don't survive]] [[UnstoppableRage the]] [[SuperPoweredEvilSide consequences]].
* FrameUp: Aside from Kikyo's murder, Naraku has framed Inuyasha for the destruction of Sango's village and the deaths of Koga's packmates to trick both into trying to kill Inuyasha for him.
* FurryReminder: Every once-in-awhile Inuyasha will do something that reminds the viewers he is part ''dog''-demon. For example, he'll shake off like a dog when wet, occasionally scratch his ear with his foot, and also sniff around on the ground. Then there was the time Kagome got him to fetch a stick (he kind of got pissed about that one though).
* GodzillaThreshold: After the threshold was crossed in the first episode, unsealing him was the solution.
* GoodIsNotNice: A prime example: he starts off motivated largely by self-interest, and while CharacterDevelopment soon brings out his better nature, he remains a short-tempered, foul-mouthed JerkWithAHeartOfGold whose first solution to most problems involves violence.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Let's face it, with all of the injuries he's suffered, he'd most likely be dead a hundred times over if not for this.
* GreenEyedEpiphany: Even though he made it clear through his acts that he cares for Kagome but never said it out of pride, whenever Koga shows up or if Kagome just as much as ''talks'' about him in a non-derogatory way, Inuyasha will become ''fiercely'' possessive and jealous.
* GutturalGrowler: His initial transformations into a full demon invoked this.
* HairTriggerTemper: Justified as being passive in the feudal times filled with superstitious humans and [[SmugSuper justifiably arrogant demons with power to back up their claims]] tend to abuse the meek, as shown when he compares himself to Jineji, a fellow half-demon with a lack of an ability to defend himself.
* HalfBreedDiscrimination: When he was a kid he was shunned by humans and hunted by youkai only for being a hanyou. Even now, humans suspect and fear him while youkai mock him.
* HalfHumanHybrid: He hates this because his mother suffered for it [[spoiler: at first]]
* HealingFactor: Being half demon helps.
* HellishPupils: Inherited from his youkai side.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Due to his [[HalfBreedDiscrimination demonic heritage]].
* HeroicBSOD: One time when Kagome told him he was "exhausting". To which he replied "What? Do you mean you're tired of being with me?" Cue the signature sitting position and a (very) blank stare.
* HeyYou: How he initially addresses Kagome.
* HoldingYourShoulderMeansInjury: Whenever he's injured, he holds his shoulder. In fact, the only time he ''doesn't'' hold his shoulder is when he is literally too injured to move.
* HonorBeforeReason: For all of his flaws, Inuyasha does have a sense of honor:
** When Kaijinbo, possessed by the newly-forged [[EvilWeapon Tokijin]], comes to kill him while he's BroughtDownToNormal, Inuyasha decides to fight him himself rather than let his friends do so for him because he was the one Kajinbo was after.
** He also invokes this trope in the filler episode "The Tragic Love Song of Destiny," which details how Inuyasha and Kikyo first met and the events that led up to Kikyo's death and Inuyasha's [[SuspendedAnimation sealing]]. When he first discovers the existence of the Shikon Jewel, he refuses to attack Kikyo for it when she's badly injured and can't fight back; when Kikyo asked why he didn't try to kill her then, he explains that he "doesn't play dirty." He also makes sure that Kikyo gets Kaede to safety before they really get into it.
* HotBlooded: [[InformedAttribute Inherited from his father]] and hostility gained from being hunted down by both sides.
* HumanMomNonhumanDad: His mom Izayoi was an {{Ojou}}, his dad the Inu-No-Taishou (Dog General) is... well, a demon.
* HypocriticalHumor: He hates people who hide how they feel towards others while [[CannotSpitItOut hiding his feelings for Kagome]].
* IndyPloy: Despite his reputation as the IdiotHero and the fact he's the least-sophisticated fighter of his group, he's also the character most likely to think outside of the box in a pinch, such as the time he was told of there being an AchillesHeel somewhere on his youki-absorbing opponent with the intent that he would find it and attack there instead. His reaction was basically, "That'll take too long, so I'll just use my SwordBeam to blow up the ground underneath him and smack him while he's off balance."
* InformedAbility: His fire rat robe is allegedly "stronger than any suit of armor", despite being ripped to pieces every other chapter.
* InvoluntaryShapeshifting: Into both full human and full youkai.
* ItsPersonal: Naraku killed Kikyo and tricked Inuyasha into thinking she had betrayed him.
* {{Jerkass}} --> JerkWithAHeartOfGold: His character development over the course of the series. Though he remains crass, short-tempered, and violent, he is fiercely protective of his friends, especially [[LoveInterest Kagome]], and able to sympathize with other half-demons who were prejudiced against, such as Shiori and Jinenji.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Sometimes Inuyasha makes points that actually make sense in the situation, however due to his crass way of saying them and his ButtMonkey status, he is often viewed as an IdiotHero by his companions.
* KiAttacks: Pretty much all of his attacks depend on the power of his youki. His [[CounterAttack Bakuryuuha]], turns his enemy's youki against them and consequently can only be used against demons with enough youki to match his without dwarfing it, or vice versa.
* KubrickStare: He sometimes does this when he's in his [[http://images2.fanpop.com/image/articles/44000/ranma-and-akane_44987_3.jpg?cache=1267339633 full youkai form.]]
* LightningBruiser: Even while holding his {{BFS}} he's fast.
* LonerTurnedFriend: To Kagome and the rest of their group, thanks to CharacterDevelopment.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: See {{Bishonen}} above.
* ManChild: Pre-CharacterDevelopment; Kagome even reflects that her little brother is more emotionally mature than Inuyasha.
* MeaningfulName: Inuyasha: "Inu" is Japanese for "dog" and "Yasha" means "friendly spirit," "forest spirit," or "holy demon." It seems to refer to a demon that is fueled by positive energy ([[IncorruptiblePurePureness reiki]]) rather than negative energy ([[PureIsNotGood youki]]).
* MegatonPunch: [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] by his considerable half-demon strength.
* MrFanservice: As his clothes are often torn, it leads to this.
* MyGreatestFailure: Being unable to save Kikyo from being killed by Naraku [[spoiler: multiple times.]]
* NamedWeapons: Tessaiga ("Steel-Cleaving Fang")
* NoSell: He once got a log smashed over his head without even flinching (though it did give him a CranialEruption). He can also withstand direct contact with [[HollywoodAcid acid]] without getting fried, and didn't even flinch when Sango stabbed him in the arm with a sword.
* NoSocialSkills: Being ostracized and living alone for most of your life can mess up the way you approach other people.
* NotQuiteFlight: InuYasha makes RoofHopping look easy. Doesn't matter if there are any buildings handy or not, treetops also work. And his leaps can cover kilometers (WordOfGod has stated one leap could clear three mountains). He also both rises and falls rather slowly, as if he was gliding.
* TheNoseKnows: Can smell on par with a dog... which doesn't always help; for example, in the episode "The Cursed Ink of the Hell-Painter," the strong smell of black ink actually caused him to pass out.
* OutDamnedSpot: After slaughtering a bunch of bandits while in his youkai form, he tries to wash his hands but he's still able to smell the blood.
* ParentalAbandonment: Actually his dad died immediately after his birth and his mother also died while he was young. The most he says about his mom's passing is that she "died a long time ago" and that it "wasn't her fault."
* PerpetualFrowner: He has a lot to be pissed about, and manages to be pissed at ''everything.''
* PowerAtAPrice: His full yokai form grants him the full measure of power but overwhelms him with bloodlust and will make him fight until he gets killed.
* PsychicStatic: His full yokai form displays this when he fights [[{{Telepathy}} Goshinki]]. In this state, Inuyasha's ''only'' coherent thoughts are [[UnstoppableRage anger]] and [[BloodKnight the joy of killing]], which rendered Goshinki incapable of reading his mind and thus [[CombatClairvoyance predicting his next move]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Inuyasha's exact age and whether or not the fifty years he spent asleep count toward it is the subject of considerable debate in the fandom, due to the fact that Takahashi prefers not to provide exact ages for youkai and hanyou characters. It is, however, established in the series that youkai live longer and age more slowly than humans, so while official materials only state that he's effectively a teenager, it's generally accepted that this trope is in effect. ''[[Anime/InuYashaTheMovieSwordsOfAnHonorableRuler Swords of an Honorable Ruler]]'' sets his actual age at about two hundred and fifty (including the time spent in stasis) but is not considered canon.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: His irises are gold, but the sclerae turn red with blue irises when his youkai blood drives him berserk.
* RestrainingBolt: Tessaiga prevents his SuperPoweredEvilSide from taking over. And the necklace he sports was unwillingly placed on him by Kaede to stop him from attacking humans, which Kagome has the power to activate (much to his dismay).
* RoofHopping: When in the modern world.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: Thanks to his sense of smell.
* SealedBadassInACan: The reason Kagome released him from his suspended animation in the first place was because he was the only person in the immediate vicinity who could kill a Shikon-fueled Mistress Centipede.
* SealedEvilInACan: Inuyasha wasn't always a hero or anti-hero. Kikyou pinned him to a tree with a seal that lasted for 50 years until it was broken by Kagome. Once he began traveling with Kagome, his evilness was rapidly cured.
* SecretKeeper: Of the existence of Miroku's shouki wounds and that he can no longer feel pain when poisoned.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: When Miroku assumes Kagome to be his lover, Inuyasha states that she's just a "jewel detector," much to Kagome's annoyance.
* SingleTargetSexuality: A unique take on the trope; the only two women he's ever really loved are Kikyo and Kagome.
* SirSwearsALot: ''Especially'' in the Japanese dub, in which his language is pretty crude.
* SoLastSeason: Just about every upgrade he gets for the Tessaiga quickly diminishes in usefulness, forcing him to find another.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Kikyo.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Reflecting his dog-based {{Youkai}} nature.
* SuperMode: There have been three occasions in which [=InuYasha=] didn't go berserk when tapping into his full youkai powers.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: He inherited more power from his youkai side than his half-human body can handle. Once this power is awakened by a near-death experience, if it's not kept sealed each time he draws upon it it [[SanitySlippage degrades his sanity]] and drives him into fits of feral UnstoppableRage that can only be controlled by Tessaiga's anti-youkai barrier. The fact that he was a threat to his friends in this state is what ultimately convinced [=InuYasha=] not to become a full youkai.
* SuperSenses: Particularly his sense of smell.
* SuperStrength: Being a half demon can do that for you.
** SuperSpeed: Considering that he dodges Koga's attacks.
* SuspendedAnimation: Sealed to a tree for fifty years by Kikyo's arrow.
* SwordBeam: The Kaze no Kizu / Wind Scar.
* TameHisAnger: At first he restrains himself somewhat in response to having a necklace placed on his neck that can put him in line whether he wants to be or not. Later, CharacterDevelopment also contributes to this, but it really becomes crucial to him when he assumes Youkai form and unintentionally threatens the ones he cares about.
* TeamDad: He's an unorthodox example, but he tries to give the TeamMom emotional support, physically prevents the ActionGirl from giving up on her brother and the SmartGuy from throwing his life away, and is an example for both the TagalongKid and Kagome's little brother.
* TokenEvilTeammate: At the beginning of the series, he only agreed to help gather the Shikon Jewel shards so he could use them himself.
* TragicKeepsake: His fire-rat armor was left to him by his mother before she died. According to episodes 147 and 148 of the anime, he also kept a shell of lipstick that belonged to her, which he later gave to Kikyo as a gift.
* TreasureChestCavity: The gateway to his father's grave is hidden in a black pearl stored inside his right eye.
* TroubledButCute: Considering that he is a {{Bishonen}} JerkWithAHeartOfGold complete with a DarkAndTroubledPast.
* {{Tsundere}}: A male version of the ''Tsun'' variety. ''Very'' tsuntsun, but when he wants to he can be very sweet and generous.
* UnusualEars: Dog ears, reflecting his youkai heritage; specifically, they're [[AllThereInTheManual akita inu ears]].
* UnskilledButStrong: A prime example. WordOfGod explains that instead of using techniques and tactics, Inuyasha wins simply with raw power and instinct: Despite the Tessaiga's many abilities, Inuyasha's typical approach to battle is charging head-on with his sword raised high, screaming like a maniac, and either hammering his opponents with the blade or spamming his SwordBeam. His actual sword strikes are either overhead swings or horizontal slashes that often miss their mark, making him an easily predictable opponent and allowing his opponents to exploit holes in his attacks. If he ever gets his ass kicked, this is usually why; in fact, his recklessness is why Goshinki was able to break Tessaiga in the first place.
* VillainProtagonist: Would have happily killed Kagome and the rest of the village at the beginning to get at the Shikon Jewel, although he quickly mellows into an AntiHero.
* WeaponAcrossTheShoulder: How he often carries the Tessaiga.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: He'll kill demons without batting an eye, but absolutely hates to kill humans no matter how evil or despicable they are. Case in point: in Episode 51, he succumbs to his SuperpoweredEvilSide and personally hunts down and slaughters Gatenmaru's henchmen; despite the fact that they were knowingly serving a demon and that they had personally fed innocent villagers to their demon boss ForTheEvulz while [[ForcedToWatch making him watch]], he undergoes a complete MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment as soon as he snaps out of it.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: His solution to any problem eventually works out to some form of "I hit it with my BFS." Admittedly said BFS was apparently made for the Swiss Army's Magical WMD Division.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Early on he qualifies since he was a borderline VillainProtagonist, although he quickly mellowed into an AntiHero. Personality-wise, he's the opposite to the usual mysterious and aloof behavior used on this trope.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: See SuperPoweredEvilSide above.
* TheWorfBarrage: The Kaze no Kizu / Wind Scar. In fact, with the exception of the Dragon-Scaled Tessaiga (which he never used enough to find a fixed weakness), pretty much all of his abilities eventually become this.
* WouldHitAGirl: He fights Kagura and Tsubaki just as hard as any male foe, and tells Princess Abi that, though he doesn't like fighting women, she's so vile that he's making an exception.
* WouldHurtAChild: He won't hesitate to give kids like Shippo a good smack upside the head when they annoy him, but he draws the line at actually killing them, as seen when he first met Shiori.

[[folder:Kagome Higurashi]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KagomeInuyasha_434.jpg
Kagome is a girl from the present era who finds herself in Japan's Sengoku era after falling down an old well in her family's Shinto shrine. She proves to be Kikyo's reincarnation, and discovers that she possesses strong spiritual powers resembling that of a {{miko}}. After she accidentally shatters the Shikon Jewel, she joins up with Inuyasha to find and reassemble the broken pieces.

->Voiced by: Creator/SatsukiYukino (JP), Moneca Stori/Kira Tozer (EN), Anna Lobo/Leyla Rangel (LA SP), Letizia Scifoni (IT), Maelys Ricordeau (FR)
----
* ABirthdayNotABreak: She was dragged into the whole mess with the Shikon Jewel on her fifteenth birthday.
* ActionGirl: Eventually she develops formidable archer skills.
* ActionSurvivor: When it all started, she was an [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent Ordinary Junior High Student]] stranded in a world she doesn't understand, but she slowly adapts and becomes a master archer and powerful miko.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Brown eyes in the anime, blue eyes in the manga although is [[http://cati-art.deviantart.com/art/Inuyasha-Curiosities-Kagome-s-eye-color-286435093 debatable]].
* AllLovingHero: Unless you get on her bad side, she's nice to just about everyone.
* AudienceSurrogate: She is the first to want to know what the hell is going on or to point out that the situation at hand is supernatural.
* BatheHerAndBringHerToMe: Sort of happens to her in one episode, though the villain intends to feed her to some immortality-fruit-bearing-tree rather than... [[SexualHarassmentAndRapeTropes what you'd normally expect]].
* BathingBeauty: She enjoys bathing and is frequently shown bathing early on in the series for {{fanservice}} purposes. More often than not, Inuyasha ends up [[AccidentalPervert walking in on her]] while she does so.
* BerserkButton: Cause anyone in her circle of friends pain. Before you do, though, make sure you've made peace with any higher being you may worship. She also hates being mistaken for Kikyo.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: While she's a nice person, you don't want to get on her nerves. Even Naraku was all "WTF?!" when he pissed her off so damn much that she uses one of her arrows that was powered-up by her rage ''and almost blew him up''.
* BigFancyHouse: The two-store house that she lives in with her family seems to be rather average... until you remember that it's located in the grounds of a Shinto shrine located ''atop of a hill''.
* BoundAndGagged: Happens to her on more than one occasion.
* BrainyBrunette: She's not good at math, though.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: In episode 4, she's managed to return home and is fully prepared to go on with her life and forget about the feudal era... but Inuyasha and [[MonsterOfTheWeek Yura]] have other plans.
* ChangedMyJumper: In the second episode a bandit remarks that her skirt is shorter than their kimono, and in the manga some people speculate that she's a youkai, but after that no one seems to notice. Of course, regarding the way other demons and the poor dress, her garb's not the most striking thing people are used to seeing.
* TheChick: Before Sango came she was the only girl in a group of three guys and did more [[BelligerentSexualTension bickering with Inuyasha]] than shard detecting.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: For example, she risks life and limb to save the vengeful spirit of a little girl from being DraggedOffToHell, and unhesitatingly saves Kikyo's life on more than one occasion. As she herself puts it to Kikyo in episode 151:
-->'''Kagome''': If there's a person right there who I can save and I'm told she can only be saved by me, of course I'll choose to save her!
* ClingyJealousGirl: To some degree, but not as bad as other examples in the page because it's focused on Kikyo, her guy's ex, and her own former incarnation.
* CoolBigSis: To Sota, and a surrogate one to Shippo.
* DamselInDistress: Quite a few times and especially early in the series before she developed her archery and holy powers. She gradually grows out of it and graduates to an ActionGirl.
* DamselOutOfDistress: All those times she was captured she wasn't super helpless and docile. If she doesn't arrange her own escape, she will certainly be [[DefiantCaptive defiant.]]
* DisappearedDad: The novels explain that he died in an accident when Kagome was little, therefore her family had to move into the Shinto temple owned by Grandpa Higurashi.
* DoppelgangerReplacementLoveInterest: Kagome angsts over the idea that Inuyasha sees her only as a replacement for Kikyo.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She frequently uses Inuyasha's cursed necklace to force him to the ground when he's being a jerk or she's dealing with her romantic angst. Often taken UpToEleven when she uses it to plow him into the ground or through bridges into rivers.
* DubNameChange: In the Brazilian dub, she is known as Agome. In the Latin American dub, her name is pronunciated as Aome. A JustifiedTrope since in both languages, [[UnfortunateNames "Kagome" sounded way too much like a slang phrase that means "shit on me."]]
* EekAMouse: She can handle {{youkai}}, blood, guts, wounds, man-eating rats, two-timing boyfriends, time-travel, saving the world while trying to pass exams, lifting the spirits of the depressed, downtrodden and bullied and can even befriend the reclusive, the painfully shy, and aggressively hostile, but ask her to help a giant beast-faced [[HalfHumanHybrid hanyou]] in his herb garden when there's an earthworm in plain sight and she'll absolutely freak out.
* {{Expy}}: Her appearance is nearly identical to that of Akari Unryu from ''RanmaOneHalf''. Her personality is similar to Akane, although she's a bit more subdued.
* EverybodyHatesMathematics: To the extent that she once had a nightmare about geometry.
* EyeScream: Downplayed. [[spoiler: One small shard from Kanna's body did hit the eye but it did little to no permanent damage.]]
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: At first. As the series goes on, she adapts to the Feudal era due to how much time she spends there.
* FreakyIsCool: This quote while Inuyasha's manhandling Shippo when they first meet him:
-->"A fox? It talks?! ''Cool!'' Let me touch him when you're done!"
* GenkiGirl: Down played. She's more [[PluckyGirl plucky]] than energetic but can get really excited at times.
* HeWillComeForMe: While [[spoiler: trapped inside the Shikon Jewel]] near the end of the series.
-->"Inuyasha will come... I believe in him."
* HolyHandGrenade: The bulk of her powers are holy spiritual powers.
* IFeelAngry: When Naraku reveals he has brainwashed Kohaku to use against Sango, Kagome is ''outraged'', explicitly tells Naraku that he is "despicable," and vows that she will never forgive him.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Sometimes, especially later in the story, but by then, her abilities as a priestess have matured to the point when she can automatically knock an arrow and guide it to its target through sheer willpower.
* InformedAttribute: In the manga, she and Kikyo do indeed look very similar. In the anime however, their designs are both subtly altered and they don't look much alike at all -- at a glance, Kikyo has a different hairstyle, smaller eyes, and paler skin.
* ItsAllMyFault: She blames herself for [[spoiler: Kikyo's definitive death at Naraku's hands]] and is reduced to a sobbing wreck for being unable to save her.
* {{Joshikousei}}: She's almost never seen not wearing a SailorFuku.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: No matter how many times her grandfather told her the Shikon Jewel history, she just wouldn't remember it. [[spoiler: It seemed that the Shikon Jewel wouldn't let her remember.]]
* LightEmUp
* LimitedWardrobe: She actually does change outfits from time to time, but spends by far most of her time in her school uniform. WordOfGod is that Kagome wears it so much because the uniform is "durable and easy to clean."
* MageMarksman: Magic Ranger variety, able to use a bow in addition to her spiritual powers.
* MagicSkirt: In the second episode, a dirty thug became an AccidentalPervert when he decided to lift up Kagome's skirt in wonder of how small it was, thinking it was a badly undersized kimono. Of course, her panties get exposed to everyone in the room but never to the audience.
* TheMagicTouch: Kagome can [[PowerNullifier purify things defiled with evil power]] such as miasma simply by touching them, though large doses require more concentration and may require a medium of an arrow.
* TheMedic: She takes this role in the team, helped by the medicines from her time as well as having the ability to purify wounds infected by demonic energy.
* {{Miko}}: She has miko powers [[spoiler:and at the end of the story becomes a real miko for a living]].
* MoralityPet: To Inuyasha; she's normally the one who gets him to help out those who need it.
* MsFanservice: All of the major females were subject to it, but Kagome got most of the Fanservice scenes. These happen mostly in the early parts of both the anime and manga, where her bathing scenes are more common. Whenever she's naked, the artists go to great lengths to show how big her breasts are and how curvy her body is. All throughout the series, there are also quite a few camera angles that exist only to show off her shapely legs.
* MyNameIsNotDurwood: Calling her Kikyo is a sure-fire way to piss her off.
* NiceGirl: Except when she has to "sit" Inuyasha because he keeps insulting her, or because he keeps hitting Shippo, or has otherwise done something extremely rude. Other than that, Kagome's very warm and friendly.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero[=/=]AccidentallyBrokeTheMacGuffin: She was the one who shattered the Shikon Jewel into fragments in the first place.
* NoSell: Kagome is flat out immune to many things such as illusionary attacks and demonic poisons.
* [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent Ordinary Junior High Student]]: Until she fell into that well... She even continues wearing her sailor uniform.
* PlayingSick: Her cover for being in the feudal era all the time. UpToEleven when she's gone for months at a time. In the real world, somebody would've got suspicious by then, even with her family covering for her.
* PluckyGirl: Are demons and roughing it in Feudal Japan going to stop her? No, not at all. [[WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld She's more worried about her grades and boyfriend issues.]]
* PowerGlows: In her case, a pinkish purple.
* PowerLimiter: [[spoiler: The Shikon no Tama kept her true spiritual powers sealed to protect itself.]]
* PowerNullifier: Kagome's main power is to purify demonic auras which can work to dissolve their attacks or even destroy them outright.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Of Priestess Kikyo... who is later resurrected, leading to a very awkward love triangle.
* SailorFuku: Her default costume.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Kagome takes a liking to wearing her uniform into the feudal era because it's easily cleaned (although it has a downside- a lecherous man once thought her skirt was a super-short kimono). She does wear casual clothes on occasion, though.
* ScrewDestiny: When the Baby attempts to [[spoiler:make her pull a FaceHeelTurn]] while repeatedly telling her she is destined to be an UnrequitedTragicMaiden, Kagome at first is depressed and considers his words, but then tells him that she is NOT and will NEVER be one of these.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: By the time of episode 3, she gets so sick of butting heads with Inuyasha that she decides to leave him and the feudal era behind. It doesn't last, though.
* SecondLove: For Inuyasha.
* ShesGotLegs: Her miniskirt emphasizes her long legs.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** She's a Sango/Miroku fangirl, especially in the anime.
** In episode 90, she seems to enjoy the idea of Sota having a crush on Hitomi.
* StepfordSmiler:
** Very obvious when Kikyo almost dies for the second time and disappears: Kagome ignores her own distress and tells Inuyasha to go search for her... and her inner insecurity makes her the target of The Baby's {{Breaking Speech}}es.
** Every one of her friends -- [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent ordinary high school girls]] and super-powered youkai hunters alike -- are terrified of her smile when she's pretending that she's not upset.
** Sometimes, it happens if Inuyasha suffers the misfortune of setting Kagome off with snide comments. Kagome will crack a dangerous smile... then batter him into the ground with "Sit" commands.
* SupportingProtagonist: Kagome is the view point character of the series, but a good deal of the plot (and fights) tend to focus on her other companions. As the series continues, she plays more and more of an active role.
* SympathyForTheDevil: She explains to her companions how Kanna truly did have emotions and [[spoiler: didn't want to die and that she told her Naraku's weakness.]]
* TeamMom: Keeps Inuyasha in check, counsels Sango and encourages her relationship with Miroku, and is a mother figure to Shippou.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: And then she blows up Naraku and purifies all his miasma saving everyone.
* TookALevelInBadass: Slowly but surely it sets in, eventually turning Kagome from doddering school girl in a world she doesn't understand, to a badass with mastery archery skills.
* TreasureChestCavity: Kagome was born with the Shikon Jewel hidden inside her body as a result of Kikyo, her previous life, having the jewel cremated along with her. When Mistress Centipede bites a chunk out of her, the Jewel falls out.
* TrueSight: She is immune to illusions.
* {{Tsundere}}: The ''Dere'' variety; sweet and nice, unless someone - most often Inuyasha - pisses her off.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She will threat and even blast anyone who threatens Inuyasha.
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: Regardless of how much time she spends in the Feudal era, she still does have to go back to school every once in a while.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: She is a NiceGirl who becomes a miko with holy powers.

[[folder:Miroku]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/MirokuInuyasha_3083.jpg
A young, low-ranking, nomadic Buddhist monk, Miroku possesses a Kazanna ("wind tunnel" or "air void") in his hand, a miniature black hole which sucks in anything if it's not kept magically sealed. The wind tunnel is the product of a curse originally put on Miroku's grandfather by Naraku that dooms Miroku's family to an early death unless it can be removed by killing Naraku first. To that end and after an awkward first encounter, Miroku joins forces with Kagome and Inuyasha.

Although Miroku has considerable spiritual power, he is not a very devout Buddhist (he usually uses his religion as an excuse when it's convenient for him) and frequently uses his status to manipulate people into giving him food, money, clothing, shelter etc. He is a skilled con artist and a HandsomeLech who habitually flirts and fondles any pretty girl he meets, usually asking them to "bear his children" so that they can carry on the mission to kill Naraku if he doesn't succeed.

->Voiced by: KoujiTsujitani (JP), Creator/KirbyMorrow (EN), Gabriel Gama (LA SP), Fabio Boccanera (IT), Benoit Marchand (FR)
----
* AmazonChaser: A big part of his attraction to Sango is because she's an ActionGirl.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: After [=InuYasha=] tells him he intends to use the Shikon Jewel to become a full youkai, Miroku asks if he's ever heard of the Shikon Jewel's power being used for good and then nails him with "When you become full youkai using the Shikon Jewel... what if you decide to kill and eat Shippo and Kagome?" [=InuYasha=] scoffs at this, but after awakening his full power and almost doing exactly what Miroku predicted, he [[spoiler:gives up on wanting to become a full youkai.]]
* AwesomeButImpractical: His Wind Tunnel is easily the strongest for most with the series with only the Meidō Zangetsuha approaching it, but it turned into this very quickly since Naraku always has some hell bees to make sure that Miroku using it would lead to him sucking poison, which can kill him.
* {{Badass}}: Yeah. He just can't use his strongest attack most of the time, but he is very badass when it comes down to business. In fact, if you think he can't do shit without the Wind Tunnel, you are seriously dead wrong.
** BadassPreacher: He is a Buddhist monk who slays demons (or at least pretends to).
* BadPowersGoodPeople: He has the power to make anything disappear into oblivion. He only uses it against violent and hostile youkai.
* TheBarnum: Has a tanuki sidekick with whom he works to cheat people out of money and rice.
* BarrierWarrior: He can create small barriers.
* [[BeatTheCurseOutOfHim Beat The Curse Out of Them]]: He does this in episode 132 to the [[DemonicPossession possessed village women and Sango]]. It's less extreme than most examples; it only amounts to him attaching {{Paper Talisman}}s to either the women or his fist and then punching them in the gut, forcing them to cough up the [[FetusTerrible baby salamander demons]] that were controlling them.
* BerserkButton: He doesn't necessarily feel the need to get involved every time someone takes a more-than-friendly interest in Sango, if he thinks they respect her and stand a chance of making her happy. If physical force or {{brainwashing}} is involved, however, ''he will go for the kill''. He doesn't just get violent, his whole manner of speech changes as well, going from mild and polite to just as potty-mouthed and crude as Inuyasha.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Inuyasha. He's always trying to give him advice and trying to make him take things more calmly and think things through first. As the relationship develops Inuyasha starts to return the favor.
* BlessedWithSuck: [[IncrediblyLamePun Literally]]. His Wind Tunnel can suck up anything, but it will eventually kill him and sucking up poison and sharp objects will only make his death occur that much sooner.
* BloodFromEveryOrifice: He ends up absorbing so much of Naraku's miasma through the Wind Tunnel that he bleeds from the [[BloodFromTheMouth mouth]], [[DeadlyNosebleed nose]], [[TearsOfBlood eyes]], and ears.
* BrokenHero: He's easygoing, carefree and cheerful, even when he'll die very young being swallowed by his own hand.
* BromanticFoil: To Inuyasha.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He flirts, cons, and generally comes across as a ''terrible'' Buddhist, but he wields a substantial amount of holy power and proves to have a deep core of spirituality when it really counts.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: Averted and played straight. He flirts, gropes and peeks on Sango every chance he gets, but he never asked her to bear his child. At least not until he was serious about their RelationshipUpgrade.
* TheCasanova: The series implies he used to be this. WordOfGod confirms it.
* CatchPhrase: "Will you bear my children?"
* TheCharmer: He's a very good sweet-talker and he can charm his way out of trouble or to get whatever he wants.
* ChivalrousPervert: He is capable of being noble and a gentleman, to the incredulity of both Inuyasha and Sango.
%%* CombatCommentator
* CommitmentIssues: Due to being cursed, Miroku's goal seems to be to have as many kids as possible.
* ConMan: His favorite trick is to, upon arriving in a town, single out a particularly large and wealthy-looking house and announce that it is "threatened by evil spirits," which he then generously offers to exorcize in return for a meal and a place to stay for the night. In one episode, there actually ''is'' a monster in the village - this causes the entire main cast to express surprise.
* CursedWithAwesome: His curse really ''is'' a curse, but in an admirable example of making the best out of a bad situation, he uses it as a very powerful weapon as well.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He watched his father die being sucked into his Wind Tunnel when he was a little boy.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DirtyOldMonk: While far from old, he is a ''very'' perverted Buddhist monk, groping and asking almost every woman he meets to bear his children.
* {{Expy}}: [[UruseiYatsura Ataru]], sort of, but he is nicer and more mature.
* FeelNoPain: After taking Yakurou Dokusen's "medicine", so he's able to suck any poison into his Wind Tunnel and keep fighting even though it's still killing him.
* FuelMeterOfPower: The Wind Tunnel ''will'' kill him eventually.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: In the later chapters of the manga, after he absorbs a massive amount of Naraku's miasma via the Wind Tunnel, the wounds inflicted by it cause massive scars that extend all the way up his right arm and continue to spread every time he uses the Wind Tunnel thereafter.
* GoodShepherd: Vices aside, he's a heroic holy man.
* HandsomeLech: He's a good-looking skirt-chaser.
* HereditaryCurse: The Wind Tunnel was first placed on his grandfather and passed down from his father to him.
* HolyHandGrenade: As a monk that is to be expected.
* ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne: When Inuyasha calls him a "fake lechering monk":
-->"I may be a lecher, but how ''dare'' you call me a fake!"
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: When Sango is courted by a nice rich guy, he seriously thinks he should let go of her so she can have the nice life she needs so badly.
* ItsPersonal: Naraku cursed his family.
* KryptoniteIsEverywhere: The Saimyoshou are always around preventing him from using his curse.
* LadykillerInLove: He's an unrepentant womanizer who falls in love with Sango, not that it stops his flirting. Cue Hiraikotsu.
* LovableSexManiac: He gropes unsuspecting women and even asks his infamous question to young girls, to the disgust of his traveling companions.
* LoveableRogue: He'll do anything to have a comfortable and enjoyable life, whether it's conning, lying or even stealing to get food, lodgings, money and women.
* {{Lust}}: Runs in his family, and one of the reasons his grandfather ended up with the Wind Tunnel.
* MagicalGesture: When using his spiritual powers, he many times accompanies it with hand gestures (probably Mudras).
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Even his proposal had this.
* MeaningfulName: "Miroku" is the Japanese name for [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maitreya Maitreya]], a figure who according to Buddhism will one day descend to earth and become the future Buddha.
* MomentKiller:
** Tender moments between Miroku and Sango are most often ruined by Miroku's wandering hands.
** On one hilarious occasion, when he managed to keep his hands to himself, ''she'' reached around to touch ''his'' rump -- checking for a tail, to make sure he wasn't [[{{Kitsune}} Shippo]] in disguise.
** On another rare moment, Miroku tries to comfort her which he usually would've ruined with his wandering hands, however Miroku remains perfectly chivalrous and prepares to walk away. Sango's [[LampshadeHanging lampshading]] of the usual routine, arguably, is the starting cause of the moment killer.
-->'''Sango''': That's it?\\
'''Miroku''': Hm?\\
'''Sango''': Well it's just that usually after the encouragement you try to do something lecherous.\\
'''Miroku''': ''[smiles, sighing]'' Sango... ''[places his hand on her breast]'' If that's all you wanted you should have said so.\\
''[cue [[RunningGag slap]]]''
* MrExposition
* MrViceGuy
* NakedFirstImpression: He first met Kagome while they was bathing in the same hot spring, but she didn't realize it.
* NunTooHoly: Well, more like [[SpearCounterpart Monk Too Holy]], but the motif applies. InuYasha draws on lots of stories from Japan's Feudal Era and stories about Buddhist monks acting in a very ''un''monkly fashion date back at least that far.
* PaperTalisman: They have multiple uses, some creating barriers while others are thrown like weapons that paralyze or destroy demons.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father was sucked into his own Wind Tunnel when Miroku was a little kid, and we never really hear about his mom.
* PowerIncontinence: As a direct result of the "power" being the product of a curse.
* PowerOfTheVoid: The Wind Tunnel.
* PowerPalms: The Wind Tunnel lies in the palm of his right hand.
* SexyPriest: He's a Buddhist monk and quite the ladies' man.
* SimpleStaff: He's a very capable fighter using his shakujo.
* SinsOfOurFathers: The Wind Tunnel is a curse passed down to him from his father and grandfather.
* StepfordSmiler: Looks and act carefree and dirty-minded, but deep down he's ''very'' troubled because he knows he's getting closer and closer to death.
* StoryBreakerPower: The Wind Tunnel would been this if not for the fact that Naraku always has some way to keep him from using it.
* SuperPowerMeltdown: The Wind Tunnel expands over time and will eventually grow large enough to consume him.
* TooPowerfulToLive: Not Miroku himself, but the Wind Tunnel, when shown, obviously outclassed Tessaiga as a weapon, so Naraku shows up and has ways to keep Miroku from using the Wind Tunnel so he doesn't render everybody else pointless.
* UrbanLegendLoveLife: While he does charm the ladies, there's never proof in the series that he has actually been with one. It's hinted that the actual reason he didn't defend himself when Shima claimed to have lost her virginity to him (she lied), is that he didn't remember if it was true or not, implying that he has slept with enough women to not know for sure if one of them was Shima. The closest to proof was when he had seduced a woman to the point that he was on top of her but she turned out to be possessed.
* WeaponsThatSuck: [[CursedWithAwesome The Wind Tunnel as his family uses it]].
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Particularly towards the end of the series.

[[folder:Sango]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/SangoInuyasha_9365.jpg

Raised from a young age to be a formidable fighter, 16 year old Sango is a YamatoNadeshiko coming from a village of taijiya (professional demon slayers). She is the sole survivor of the massacre of her entire village by Naraku's hand, (including Sango's father and little brother Kohaku). After she recovered from the massacre, she is tricked into thinking that Inuyasha is the culprit and attacks him, but soon discovers that Naraku was responsible and joins Inuyasha's group to take revenge.

Sango's primary weapon is Hiraikotsu, an enormous [[PrecisionGuidedBoomerang boomerang]] made from demon bones, but she also has various hidden blades and poison potions stored in her armor and is knowledgeable about many varieties of youkai and how to fight them. Her cat companion Kirara aids in combat and also serves as her steed.

->Voiced by: HoukoKuwashima (JP), Creator/KellySheridan (EN), Liliana Barba (LA SP), Emmanuela D'Amico (IT), Yael Elhadad (FR)
----
* ActionGirl: A trained demon hunter and fighter.
* [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl Always Save the Guy]]: Sango will do ''anything'' to save Miroku.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Usually used on Miroku.
* {{Badass}}: Very much. As stated below, she was stabbed with a scythe, shot with multiple arrows, buried alive, and she did not let that hold her back and dug herself out of her own grave.
** BadassNormal: The only member of Inuyasha's group with no real supernatural powers of her own, and she's still perfectly capable of keeping up with them.
** HeartbrokenBadass: She's lost her family and hometown thanks to Naraku.
* BadWithTheBone: Hiraikotsu is made of purified youkai bones.
* BattleAura: When Sango is pissed off she can manifest a BattleAura that can send even ''Inuyasha'' ducking for cover. This even though Sango is [[TheTeamNormal the only member of the]] team [[BadassNormal with no supernatural powers whatsoever]].
* BattleBoomerang: Her weapon of choice.
* BerserkButton: Miroku being a lecher. She later calms down as long as he's only a lecher ''with her''.
* BigSisterInstinct: She is ''extremely'' protective of Kohaku.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Has a hidden retractable blade in her right sleeve.
* BrokenBird: Her clan was tricked and massacred by Naraku, who proceeded to resurrect her brother as a weapon against her.
* BrownEyes: She's the more down-to-earth of the main characters.
* BuriedAlive: After being stabbed by her brother and shot with arrows, she is thought to be dead and was buried along with the rest of her murdered companions.
** NotQuiteDead: She actually survived the above injuries.
** RiseFromYourGrave: And dug herself out.
* ChainPain: One of her many weapons is a chain.
* ChangingClothesIsAFreeAction: Played straight at least once in the anime where she changes from her normal clothes to her armor in a second, ''while leaping''. Usually she averts it though, either having some time to change, fighting in her kimono or already wearing her armor since the beginning.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Case in point: the Hiraikotsu is as big as she is and is as heavy as it looks, and she carries and throws it like it was made of paper.
* ChildSoldier: She's a highly skilled demon hunter and is only 16 and she probably started at 11.
* ChosenConceptionPartner: Miroku flirts with every pretty woman he sees, but Sango is his true choice. When he asks her to bear his children, he ''means it''. [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale, she does.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: Whenever Miroku flirts with other girls.
* CoolBigSis: To Kohaku.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Dark brown hair and brown eyes.
* CuteBruiser: She almost hits as hard as [=InuYasha=], but Miroku has the hots for her for a reason.
* CrazyPrepared: She habitually carries a lot of backup weapons, ropes, all kinds of poisons and a gas mask.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: She has several memories of her father, where he is teaching her something or showing how much he cares about her and Kohaku.
* DemonSlaying: The protagonists do a lot of this in general, but for Sango it's both her profession and a family tradition.
* {{Determinator}}: She was stabbed with a scythe in her back, got hit with several arrows and was buried alive. But instead of dying she just got pissed off, dug herself out and later proceeded to hike for miles and fight Inuyasha who she thought had destroyed her village, all this while bleeding to death.
* DoomedHometown: Courtesy of Naraku.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Sango frequently hits/slaps/bludgeons Miroku for groping her (before their engagement) and flirting with others (after it).
* DualWielding: She often fights with both Hiraikotsu and her short sword at the same time.
* [[DudeShesLikeInAComa Dudette, He's Like, In A Coma!]]: She kissed Miroku while he was unconscious [[spoiler: and in the brink of death]] before leaving to fight Naraku.
* DrivenToSuicide: She's convinced at one point that the only way to save her brother is to kill him and then herself. Doesn't go through with it, though.
* EmpathicWeapon: Her giant boomerang, Hiraikotsu.
* {{Expy}}:
** Of [[RanmaOneHalf Ukyo Kuonji]] from ''Ranma ˝''. They are both from traditionalist families with long-standing traditions, they both fight with oversized weapons. Their character designs in the manga are also extremely similar.
** She also has quite a few similarities to [[MermaidSaga Rin]].
* FeelNoPain: While serving as Naraku's UnwittingPawn, he embeds a jewel shard in her body that does this to her, with the idea that she would fight Inuyasha to the death if she didn't know how badly she was hurt. Indeed, Inuyasha has to explicitly point out to her that she was bleeding all over the place during their fight. When Naraku later retrieves the shard from her body, Sango is promptly incapacitated from the pain and ends up falling into a coma for over a week.
* GuiltComplex: She tends to blame herself a lot, it doesn't matter if it really is her fault or not.
* HiddenWeapons: Where to begin… a hidden BladeBelowTheShoulder in her right arm, a chain in her right elbow guard, and different kinds of poison hidden all over her armor.
* HimeCut: Wears her hair like this when not fighting.
* HotForPreacher: For Miroku.
* ItsPersonal: Naraku murdered her family and destroyed her village, tricked her into thinking Inuyasha was responsible and brainwashed her brother.
* JackOfAllStats: She's strong but not as strong as Inuyasha, she's intelligent but not as much as Miroku and she's very knowledgeable about youkai but not as much as Myoga.
* LadyOfWar
* LastOfHerKind: Thanks to Naraku, she's the last of the demon slayers. [[spoiler: Until Kohaku is brought back, anyway]].
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Hiraikotsu is impressively good as a shield, even withstanding attacks like the Wind Scar and the Kongosoha.
* LuminescentBlush: She blushes a lot, basically every time Miroku is either being perverted or romantic towards her.
* MasterPoisoner: She has extensive knowledge in the preparation of different kinds of poisons and how they affect youkai.
* MsFanservice: She has a few gratuitous bath scenes, sometimes we see her undress and change into her battle outfit, her demon-slaying outfit is tight-fitting, she is a frequent victim of Miroku's groping, a few shots exist only to show off her breasts and butt.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Her weapons include the Hiraikotsu, a wakizashi (small sword), a chain and a hidden blade.
* MyGreatestFailure: Being unable to prevent Kohaku's death. [[spoiler: Lucky for her, he eventually gets better.]]
* NamedWeapons: Hiraikotsu ("Bone that flies back")
* ParentalAbandonment: We never see her mother, and her father is killed by her brother when he's under Naraku's control.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: Naraku gives her the choice between killing Rin to kill Naraku in order to save Miroku's life, or staying her hand to save Rin and therefore letting Miroku die. She chooses to [[spoiler:save Miroku but Kagome manages to save Rin just in time. Sango promptly offers her life to Sesshoumaru as payment for her attempt on Rin's life, but Sesshoumaru lets her live.]]
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: And it's bigger than she is.
* RapunzelHair: Her hair reaches her hips when let down.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She's dark-haired, fair-skinned, and considered beautiful by several other characters.
* ScarsAreForever[=/=]GoodScarsEvilScars: "Kohaku's scar" on her back.
* SensualSpandex: Her demon-slaying armor isn't really spandex, but it is tight-fighting and accentuates everything.
* SoleSurvivor: Of the demon slayer massacre.
* SurvivorGuilt: Blamed herself for her clan's demise and especially for her brother's death.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: She's not fooling anybody hiding her crush for Miroku:
-->"It's not like I'm jealous or anything."
-->"It's not really like I expected you'd be in love with me or anything."
* TheTeamNormal: She has no superpowers, she's simply a very skilled, very knowledgeable fighter.
* TomboyishPonytail: Wears her hair like this whenever she fights.
* ThatDidntHappen: She goes into complete denial after declaring that she prefers to die with Miroku than leave him and save herself: "Did I say something? What did I say?"
%%* TroubledButCute
* {{Tsundere}}: The ''Dere'' variety. Even though she's usually more of a YamatoNadeshiko, Miroku is a genius bringing out the tsundere in her.
* WeakButSkilled: She's actually very strong but her strength doesn't compare to that of youkai. She makes up for it and her lack of powers with knowledge, techniques and training.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She's quite the spin on the trope: she's tall, willowy, dark-haired, gentle and follows the family tradition... which happens to be ''demon slaying''. Slightly based on how real life {{Yamato Nadeshiko}}s were trained in weapon use so they could defend their households when in a pinch.
* YouAreWorthHell: She prefers to die with Miroku than live without him.

Kirara is a nekomata - a two-tailed youkai cat - who is also Sango's companion. She can change from a tiny feline to a huge fanged one for Sango to ride on, and has the ability to fly in her larger form.

->Voiced by: Tarako (JP)
----
* ActionPet: Sango's, though she later [[spoiler:joins up with Kohaku]].
* BadassAdorable: A cute nekomata who can transform into a huge sabre-toothed cat.
* CoolPet: Admit it, you ''wish'' your pet could change shapes and fly.
* CuteKitten: A mild subversion because of Kirara's large form.
** MegaNeko: When she uses said form.
* {{Flight}}: Can fly in her big form.
* HorseOfADifferentColor: She normally carries Sango and Miroku on her back.
* [[HunterOfHisOwnKind Hunter of Her Own Kind]]: A cat demon who's been working alongside Sango's family in their [[DemonSlaying trade]] for generations.
* IncendiaryExponent: Her paws are wreathed in flames in her giant form.
* KillerRabbit: Downplayed. Her small form is adorable but she has to change to her bigger form for the killer part.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: To Sango.
* MultipleTailedBeast: Being a nekomata, she has two tails.
* NonDubbedGrunts: Much like [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} Pikachu]], her animal noises are undubbed.
* NonHumanSidekick: Sango's cat-demon sidekick.
* PantheraAwesome: She transforms into a big saber-toothed cat writhed in flames.
* ParrotPetPosition: Hangs out on Sango's shoulder.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Being a nekomata, this is obligatory. In the anime it's implied she was Midoriko's companion.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Subverted. When she's first introduced to Inuyasha's group, she's a snarling beast with glowing red eyes. Then it's revealed she's a friend of Myouga's and was just trying to protect the dead villagers of the place she calls home. She's a friend and ally after that.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: In her small form. Awwwwwwww.
* {{Sizeshifter}}
** FunSize
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: In the English dub, her name is pronounced as 'Kilala', but still spelled 'Kirara'.
* {{Youkai}}: She is a nekomata.

[[folder:Shippo]]
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ShippoInuyasha_7964.jpg
Shippo is a young fox youkai who joins Kagome and Inuyasha following the death of his father. Since he is still a child, he is not very strong in battle, but can change his shape and has a repertoire of trickery that occasionally comes in handy. His youth and immaturity bring him into frequent conflict with Inuyasha; it is not clear exactly how old he really is, given that youkai age more slowly than humans.

----
* AdaptationalBadass:
** In the PS2 game Secret of the Cursed Mask, he's a full party member, and the FragileSpeedster of the group.
** In most games he's playable in, he's almost always a LightningBruiser and a GameBreaker as well.
* AnimalMotifs: Fox, being a kitsune.
* BattleTops: "Fox Magic! Spinning tops!"
* BrattyHalfPint: He's a young kitsune.
* CaptainObvious
* ChickMagnet: He may not look it, but he gets ''plenty'' of [[GirlOfTheWeek Girls of the Week]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Especially when poking fun at [=InuYasha=]'s romantic issues.
* DisappearedDad: We meet him right after his dad, a powerful fox youkai, was murdered and skinned by [[ThoseTwoBadGuys Hiten and Manten]].
* {{Expy}}: [[UruseiYatsura Jariten]].
* FauxFire: His fire doesn't burn.
* GreenEyes: Despite his young age, he has immense magical talent for his species, lampshaded when he's accidentally dragged into a kitsune examination session he didn't even know existed. Despite having no time to prepare for his exams and being the youngest examinee present, he wipes the floor with his fellow examinees, earning their absolute awe as he breaks records in the speed at which he climbs the Kitsune rankings. It's confirmed in-universe that one day he'll grow up to be a [[UpToEleven Tai]]{{youkai}}.
* HairDecorations: Ties his hair back with a blue bow.
* [[IAmNotWeasel I Am Not a]] {{Tanuki}}: [[RunningGag "I'm a Kitsune!"]]
* {{Kidanova}}: Has a lot of conquests for someone so young.
* KidSidekick
* {{Kitsune}}: Although he only has one tail and his transformations are flawed.
* LittleBitBeastly: Aside from his tail and hind legs, he really doesn't look much like a fox.
* TheLoad: His powers are of little use in battle or otherwise.
* MasterOfIllusion: Most of his tricks fall under this branch of magic including MesACrowd.
* MorphicResonance: Can't hide his tail most of the time.
* MouthyKid: Which often gets him smacked over the head by Inuyasha.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father was killed by the Thunder Brothers, and no mention is made of his mother.
* ParrotPetPosition: Often rides on either Inuyasha's or Kagome's shoulder.
* PluckyComicRelief
* PointyEars
* SweetTooth: Kagome often brings him lollipops during her returns to the modern era.
* TagalongKid
* TheTrickster: Enjoys pranking [=InuYasha=].
* VagueAge: WordOfGod is that he's the biological equivalent of a seven-year-old human.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Can shapeshift, although his human impersonations [[MorphicResonance retain his tail]].
* WhatTheHellHero: In episode 97, he gives one of these to Inuyasha, Miroku, and Kagome, accusing them of being the reason Kirara ran away. The rest of the group gives it right back to him when it turns out that Myoga merely borrowed Kirara to run errands and Shippo forgot to tell them; they're so pissed at him that, for once, Kagome gives Inuyasha free rein to pound Shippo rather than "sitting" him.
* {{Youkai}}: He is a young kitsune.
