!!Maison de Ayakashi's Residents

[[folder:Ririchiyo Shirakiin]]
[[quoteright:273:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ririchoprofile_4642.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/RinaHidaka (Japanese), Creator/HilaryHaag (English)

A half-human, half-oni high school girl who transferred to Room 4 of Maison de Ayakashi in order to live alone. She yearns to be independent and constantly worries about not being able to communicate with other people properly, one of her reasons for moving. Her SS agent and servant is Soushi, a fox spirit she'd unwittingly saved, although she's not aware of it.
----
* ACupAngst: It's not something she normally cares about, but she doesn't seem to like it when the busty maid Chino calls her "tiny" (although she was talking about Ririchiyo's height).
* ActionGirl: Being descended from a {{Oni}} gives her decent combat capacity.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's a black-haired {{Ojou}} who puts up an aloof and jerkish front as a way of hiding her sensitivity, but she's trying to grow out of it.
* ArrangedMarriage: Her family intends to marry her off to Kagerou when she grows older. Ririchiyo doesn't try to hide she hates the mere thought of it.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:The manga ends with Zange having a vision of Ririchiyo and Soushi getting married and having a son together. It's implied that their son will be the Soushi from the "If" timeline, who wished to be born as Ririchiyo's son in the rebooted timeline.]]
* BadassAdorable: She's short, looks incredibly cute, has beautiful long black hair, and the blood of {{Oni}} running through her veins makes her much stronger than regular humans.
* BadLiar: She's simply terrible at telling lies since her reactions make it obvious she's being dishonest.
* BattleCouple: With Soushi. Both are descended from powerful youkai and although Soushi wants to keep Ririchiyo out of danger, she isn't defenseless and won't let her boyfriend do all the fighting alone.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She falls in love with Soushi because he's the first person to show genuine interest in her and care deeply about her feelings, instead of approaching her because of her family or social status.
* BitchAlert: In-universe whenever Ririchiyo meets someone new.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The brunette to blonde Nobara and redhead Karuta.
* BrokenBird: She prefers to be left alone because she's afraid of being hurt by others or hurting them to protect herself like it has happened in the past. She later starts healing thanks to Soushi and her new friends.
* BullyMagnet: When she was in elementary school, other kids bullied her for being rich and "boring". The teacher did intervene, but he was only seeking to gain the favor of the Shirakiin family. These unpleasant experiences were the cause of Ririchiyo's "bad habit" of talking down to people.
* CharacterDevelopment: Ririchiyo is finally able to smile sincerely at Soushi by the end of the anime.
* CharmPoint: Nobara sees Ririchiyo's long legs as her major appeal factor.
* ChildhoodFriends: She and Renshou grew up in the same neighborhood. Ririchiyo denies they're friends, but it's obvious they're quite close.
* CulturedBadass: She's an {{Oni}} LittleMissBadass who is also a sophisticated rich lady enjoys classical literature and music.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: Different shades, but both her eyes and hair are colored purple.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She grew up in an isolated, unloving environment and the people she interacted with either bullied her or pretended to be nice because of her family connections.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: She's a deconstruction of the {{Tsundere}}. Her verbal abuse towards others is something she considers a bad habit that she developed in an attempt to protect herself from being hurt. She's fully aware of how this creates a negative image for herself and wants to change for the better. Also, she can only start a romantic relationship with an ExtremeDoormat by being honest and helping him see his self-worth.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Played with. Ririchiyo may appear a typical cold and mean IceQueen at first glance, but it's soon made clear that's not the case. She's just a socially awkward girl who prefers to be left alone because her StepfordSnarker tendencies drive people away. Thanks to her love interest and her friends, Ririchiyo's social skills improve and she starts opening up to others.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "Kimi wa (You are)", ending theme for Episode 3.
* DontCallMeSir: After becoming a couple [[spoiler:in the reset timelime]], Ririchiyo has to remind Soushi to use [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics the honorific "-san" instead of "-sama"]] when he calls her by name.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Nobara even stated to Ririchiyo that she would like a sexual kind of friendship with her...''when they first met''.
* FriendlessBackground: She didn't have any friends until she moved to Maison de Ayakashi, which gave her her NoSocialSkills problem.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Her eyes glow when she uses her {{Oni}} blood.
* GodivaHair: Her long hair covers any naughty bits during her ShowerScene.
* HealTheCutie: She had a very lonely childhood where she was isolated from everyone in her household, other kids bullied her, and people who were nice to her were more interested in her rich family than in her. This all made Ririchiyo into a BrokenBird who hides behind a snobby mask out of habit of pushing people away. She had moved to Maison de Ayakashi to live alone and stay away from people to keep herself from offending anyone, but she ends up finding a man who deeply loves her and new friends who aren't put off by her sharp tongue. Soon, Ririchiyo grows out of her loneliness and becomes more emotionally open as she now has people who truly care about her instead of her family name.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She constantly brings herself down for not being able to control her sharp tongue, which causes her to lash out at those around her.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Ririchiyo is good-natured, considerate and very sensitive, but hides it behind a RichBitch act as a way to protect herself. Problem is she got so used to it that now Ririchiyo doesn't know when to quit it and often says insulting things she doesn't really mean. She eventually does learn to abandon the facade.
* HimeCut: Befitting her status as an {{Ojou}}, Ririchiyo has straight-cut bangs, hip-length sidelocks, and classic length straight hair. This is one of the many things Nobara finds adorable about her when they first meet.
* HornedHumanoid: Her youkai form has two curved horns.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Tiny Girl to Soushi's Huge Guy. She's about half his size.
* HumanizingTears: She often tries to keep an aloof front to protect herself. The moments where she cries reveal her hidden fragility and it's always tender.
* ImportantHaircut: In the final chapter, she has cut her hair to shoulder-length [[spoiler:as she and her friends broke free of Mikoto's tragic time loop, leaving her free to start a new happy life with Soushi]].
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: She acts haughty and condescending in order to hide her insecurities, self-loathing and fears. Unusually, she's well aware of it and is one of the things she wants to change about herself.
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: In Part III, [[spoiler:Ririchiyo has doubts about becoming lovers with Soushi as she knows he died protecting her from Mikoto in the previous timeline and is afraid they could meet the same tragic end if they start dating. Watanuki is the one who convinces her to get over her fears and be true to her feelings.]]
* LadyAndKnight: Ririchiyo is the Bright Lady, as she's a pretty {{Ojou}} with a good heart hidden behind her social awkwardness. Soushi has sworn devotion to her because of the purity of her soul, driving him to be her White Knight.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The dark to Karuta's light. Ririchiyo is a BrokenBird [[SourOutsideSadInside hiding her loneliness and sadness behind an arrogant act]], while Karuta is an innocent {{Cloudcuckoolander}}.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: She has known Renshou since childhood and their relationship is similar to that of a grumpy sister and her laid-back brother.
* LittleMissBadass: She's very short, but she can put up a good fight thanks to her {{Oni}} heritage.
* LittleMissSnarker: She's a short and petite girl, but once she opens her mouth you'll be surprised by the sharp tongue she has. It's, however, {{deconstructed|trope}} because this is a result of her [[NoSocialSkills lack of social skills]] and Ririchiyo actually wishes to grow out of her snarky tendencies.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: She's Soushi's entire reason for living. It's thanks to her that he developed his own personality and emotions.
* LonelyRichKid: As the atavist of the family, Ririchiyo was treated as a family treasure, but she was virtually casted away from anyone in the household. At school, she was bullied by her peers and the teachers came to her aid just to give a good impression to her family.
* LonerTurnedFriend: When she arrives at Maison de Ayakashi, she's a loner seeking to get away from people so she doesn't have to hurt them. As she interacts with the other residents, Ririchiyo gets over her fear of getting close to others and opens up to her new friends.
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: Becoming friends with the colorful people of Maison de Ayakashi helps Ririchiyo open up and improve her social skills.
* LoveEpiphany: While she was already attracted to him, Ririchiyo fully realizes her feelings for Soushi after she finds out he's her childhood {{Pen Pal|s}}.
* MarkOfTheSupernatural: Her purple eyes are a hint of her half-oni nature.
* MeaningfulName: Her family name can be translated as "White Oni House". Her first name can mean "Cold/Lonely Butterfly".
* MinorLivingAlone: She's only fifteen years old, but she came to Maison de Ayakashi to live alone so she could get over her NoSocialSkills problem.
* MistressAndServantBoy: She's the rich mistress and Soushi is her devoted servant. However, unlike most examples, Ririchiyo doesn't abuse or boss Soushi around and is actually unnerved by his lack of self-regard. Once they start a romantic relationship, she tries to get Soushi to drop the servant mentality and act as her equal.
* MoralityPet: Ririchiyo is the only person Soushi truly cares about and the one he would never exploit for his own benefit.
* NaginatasAreFeminine: She's the only main female character to use a weapon, which happens to be a naginata.
* NoSocialSkills: A big issue for her. Since she has pushed people away in fear of being hurt her entire life, now she has no idea how to interact with people without insulting them.
* OfficialCouple: With Soushi. They start dating near the end of the first part of the story. [[spoiler:Things don't go smoothly for their reincarnations in the second part, though. However, Ririchiyo and Soushi do manage to become a happy couple in the new timeline.]]
* {{Ojou}}: She's the daughter of a very rich and influential family.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She's fifteen, but looks about twelve. Nobara likes this about her.
* {{Oni}}: She's descended from an oni. Interestingly, Ririchiyo's oni horns look like goat horns instead of the standard smooth forehead ones.
* ThePerfectionist: Whenever she cooks or cleans, she's meticulously careful to get every single detail right. Warashibe outright calls her a perfectionist.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: In Chapter 18, she begs Soushi to not leave her alone [[spoiler:after she stops him from killing himself because of Inugami's curse]].
* PowerDyesYourHair: Her hair color becomes lighter in her youkai form.
* {{Protectorate}}: Soushi's goal in life is to protect Ririchiyo.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: A very pretty young girl with long black hair and pale skin. Nobara notes this as one of her attractive features.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: The costume of her youkai form includes a very long scarf.
* SecretSecretKeeper: Ririchiyo reveals that she had long figured out that Kagerou wasn't the one replying to her letters because she found it too obvious someone like him would never write letters like that. Hearing this, Soushi feels overjoyed at learning that Ririchiyo was always able to notice him.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She falls in love with Soushi because he was the first one to be interested in her as a person and he repeatedly shows his deep love and devotion to her.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Ririchiyo acts mean and haughty, but that's just a front to cover her insecurities and self-loathing caused by a very isolated upbringing and bullying. {{Lampshaded}} when Nobara claims that Ririchiyo is more of a "Tsunshun" (jerkish --> depressed) rather than a {{Tsundere}} (jerkish --> lovey-dovey).
* StepfordSnarker: She developed a "bad habit" of talking down to people as a way to cope with a lonely family environment and bullying. She's gradually growing out of this.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She presents herself as an aloof and sharp-tongued person because she doesn't know how to interact with others in a friendly way. After Soushi and her friends aren't put off by her act, Ririchiyo can show the sensitive, good-hearted, and caring girl she really is.
* TheThreeFacesOfEve: The Wife (the mentally older and sensible girl of the 3 main female characters).
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: {{Deconstructed|trope}}. Ririchiyo developed a bossy and abrasive behavior to cope with her troubled childhood. She really dislikes herself for verbally abusing people and wants to try her best to grow out of this behavior.
* TokenMiniMoe: Ririchiyo is the smallest resident of Maison de Ayakashi, being only 145 cm (or 4'9") tall.
* {{Tsundere}}: A {{deconstruction}} of a Harsh (Tsun) type. Ririchiyo puts a harsh and haughty front due to her [[NoSocialSkills social awkwardness]] and very lonely childhood. She recognizes this as a bad habit she needs to grow out of. She's truly a very caring and sentimental girl, but doesn't know how to verbally express herself without letting out a condescending remark. Later on, it gets subverted since she treats her love interest quite nicely even though he wouldn't mind to be mistreated by her, and the more the series progresses, the less she puts on her "tsun" persona and acts more like her true self.
* TsurimeEyes: She has the sharp eyes typically found in {{Tsundere}}s like her.
* TheUnfavourite: An interesting case of this. Due to her strong youkai blood, Ririchiyo was treated as a family treasure back at home, while her sister was largely ignored by the rest of the household. To compensate, her parents showered her younger sister with love while rejecting Ririchiyo, believing that she didn't need them anyway.
* UnknowinglyInLove: She thinks she's getting sick when she starts getting anxious around Soushi. It takes her a while to realize she's falling in love with him.
* UnlimitedWardrobe: Outside of her school uniform, you probably won't see Ririchiyo in the same outfit twice.
* UptownGirl: Played with. The Miketsukami family is just as prosperous as the Shirakiin, however because of his [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]] blood, Soushi was raised as a prisoner instead of a family member. Throughout his life, Soushi was forced to worm his way to freedom by becoming the servant of people in higher positions than him. While serving Kagerou, he fell in love with Ririchiyo as he replied her letters. He could tell that she was from a very different world than him, so he thought becoming her servant was the best he could do.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: She has troubles understanding her feelings for Soushi given her NoSocialSkills, even assuming her racing heartbeat is a symptom of illness. She eventually gets it right and starts dating Soushi.

[[folder:Soushi Miketsukami]]
[[quoteright:244:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miketsukamiprofile_1308.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YuuichiNakamura, Creator/MiyukiSawashiro (child & female forms) (Japanese), Creator/ChrisPatton (English)

The assigned SS Agent to Ririchiyo and her servant, Soushi is a half-kitsune whom Ririchiyo helped when she was little. Very calm, polite, and gentle to people, he holds a deep devotion towards his master, blindly obeying her and protecting her with his life if the situation calls for it.
----
* AccidentalPervert: In Chapter 37, he enters Ririchiyo's apartment without permission out of concern that she hasn't eaten anything out of the shock from [[spoiler:the discovery of letters from the future]]. When he opens the doors, he walks in on Ririchiyo wearing nothing but a ModestyTowel.
* AccompliceByInaction: He never directly bullied Watanuki, but he still never did anything to stop Kagerou and Zange from doing so to not intervene with his master's "games," so he only watched as the two tormented the poor tanuki.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: His family had him locked up in a warehouse his entire life because of his [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]] blood. They only let him get out when he let the women in the family use him as a servant/boy toy.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Soushi cares more about Ririchiyo than anything else.
* AnimalMotifs: He's literally part-fox demon, so there's that, but as the title of the series suggests he's also frequently compared to a dog due to his extreme UndyingLoyalty to Ririchiyo. When he's in his demon form, he'll even wag his tails when he's happy.
* AsianFoxSpirit: He has kitsune blood which gives him transformation powers and possibly influences his manipulative nature.
* AttractiveBentGender: In the bonus episode, when trying to help Ririchiyo to be more open to touchy-feely stuff, he transforms into a fully fledged female form. Despite being quite handsome in his default form, his female form manages to make [[LipstickLesbian Nobara]] gush.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:In the final chapter, Zange has a vision that shows Soushi's dream of having a family with Ririchiyo will come true. Moreover, it's implied their son will be Soushi's own AlternateSelf from the "If" tiimeline.]]
* BadassInANiceSuit: As a SS Agent, Soushi is usually dressed in a nice suit and has very strong powers for battle thanks to his kitsune blood.
* BattleButler: Even amongst an army of them in the form of the SS Agents, he stands out in his UndyingLoyalty to Ririchiyo.
* BattleCouple: With Ririchiyo. He's her bodyguard and wants to handle all of the fighting for her, but Ririchiyo is the descendant of an oni and wants to help out her kitsune boyfriend in battle.
* BecomingTheMask: Not entirely, but pretty damn close. Soushi wrote to Ririchiyo under the guise of an idealized version of Kagerou that he made up in his head, because he felt it was his job to make her like her fiance. He eventually realized that in the course of his correspondence that he not only got lost in the role, but also that he'd begun to feel genuine emotion.
* BishieSparkle: He's literally surrounded by sparkles whenever he gets in TheCharmer mode.
* BodyguardCrush: He's Ririchiyo's SS Agent and he isn't shy to admit he asked for the job specifically to be by her side and protect her.
* BrokenAce: Soushi is good at virtually everything, but his upbringing and subsequent plots to escape his family caused him to develop the personality of someone who will do anything to get what he wants.
* TheChampion: Soushi has decided to devote his life to Ririchiyo and there's nothing he wouldn't do for her.
* TheCharmer: Wooing people is chief among his many talents.
* ChickMagnet: He attracts the attention of females very easily. It doesn't help that he takes ass-kissing to another level.
* ChildhoodFriends: Knew Zange, Kagerou, and Watanuki from the age of 14 on. It's hard to say if they really are friends, though.
* CovertPervert: Behind his polite, humble and charming front, Soushi is one of the biggest perverts around. His StalkerWithACrush tendencies are just the beginning of it.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Downplayed. He's never happy about Ririchiyo spending time with other men like Kagerou, but he doesn't lose his cool and stays passive-aggressive at worst because he knows his limits as Ririchiyo's bodyguard and won't make a claim of her since he isn't really expecting she reciprocates his feelings anyway.
* CulturedBadass: Subverted, as the only reason he's so well-learned is because he didn't want to "disappoint Ririchiyo with his simpleness."
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His family raised him under house arrest from birth, and when it became too much, he learned to appeal to the sympathies of household workers and members in order to manipulate his way to freedom. He eventually ended up in the service of Kagerou and his family until he turned 20, at which point he was freed.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He declares he exists for the sake of protecting Ririchiyo.
* DevotedToYou: Soushi frequently says he lives for the sake of serving and protecting Ririchiyo and just being by her side is like a dream come true for him.
* DissonantSerenity: He keeps his polite and calm behaviour no matter the circumstances. Connected with his twisted personality.
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Ririchiyo. He blatantly calls himself her "dog" and his greatest joy is to be by her side, always eager to serve and protect her. To his credit, he's not willing to make assumptions about his relationship with Ririchiyo, and lets her be the one to decide where they stand with each other.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "Rakuen no Photograph (Paradise of Photographs)", ending theme for Episode 3.
* DualAgeModes: He can transform into a child form, which Ririchiyo finds adorable.
* DualityMotif: His right eye is blue, while the other is golden yellow. This is probably to indicate the fact that he is a [[HalfHumanHybrid half-kitsune]].
* EmptyShell: In his backstory, the only thing Soushi cared about was becoming free from his family by any means necessary and he always adjusted his behaviour to how it would be easier to manipulate people at the moment. This made him into nothing but a ProfessionalButtKisser with no self-regard whatsoever. Kagerou outright called him boring because of this. It wasn't until he came into contact with Ririchiyo that he began to develop into his own person.
* ExtremeDoormat: He became a ProfessionalButtKisser in order to appeal to his higher ups and worm his way to freedom from a life-long house arrest. His previous master Kagerou noted that he'd willingly do an embarrassing act with a smile on his face. He's something of a subversion since he uses this tactic to achieve his own ends, but it's also true he assigns so little value to his life that he'd even commit suicide if that was what was wished of him.
* FlowerMotifs: In his introduction, the window is open and CherryBlossoms drift inside the hall around him. They also appear in his transformation scenes.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Soushi speaks very respectfully under any and all circumstances because he trained himself to act as the perfect servant since he was young.
* GoldDigger: A more sympathetic one before he became Kagerou's servant and met Ririchiyo. To free himself from his house arrest, Soushi seduced many women of higher positions in his household and made himself into their boy toy so it gradually became easier for him to move around. It stopped when he found Kagerou's mother and got to convince her to release him from the Miketsukami family.
* GuileHero: More than willing to manipulate anyone into getting what he wants, including the mistresses and masters that he works under, putting himself in as much control as he can with his relationships.
* HappinessInSlavery: Soushi makes no secret of how much he loves to be his beloved Ririchiyo's servant. He actually would ''love'' that she treated him like a dog instead of a person.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:He dies protecting Ririchiyo from Inugami at the end of Part I.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Frequently refers to himself as a "lowly servant" or a "dog unworthy of anything", even for something as simple as a "thank-you". Usually PlayedForLaughs. To a certain extent, he [[InvokedTrope uses this]] as to manipulate others and/or to gain control of a situation, but he truly is not proud of the way he is, and does not see much value in himself at all.
* HeWillNotCrySoICryForHim: He cries on Ririchiyo's behalf upon listening to her speak about the loneliness she's felt through her life.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Huge Guy to Ririchiyo's Tiny Girl. She only comes up to the middle of his chest.
* IJustWantToBeFree: When he was young, his family kept him under home arrest since birth. Soushi wanted nothing more than be free from his prison and go to the outside world. He used all the means necessary to worm his way to freedom. However, as Soushi started to gain his own sense of self thanks to Ririchiyo, he realized that even though he wished to become free his entire life, he never really thought about what he wanted to do with that freedom. He then decided the only thing he wanted was to be by Ririchiyo's side.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: He's told Ririchiyo his greatest dream is to have a child with her someday. Considering his terrible childhood, this is likely so that he can give someone a better life than the one he had, and also because a loving family was something he'd never had.
* ILoveYouBecauseICantControlYou: He'd grown fond of Ririchiyo through the letters they exchanged, but his devotion to Ririchiyo was sealed when he realized that the entire time she'd been aware he'd been distant in his writings, and that when he for the first time ever was genuine in a letter, it didn't escape her notice.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Watanuki holds a grudge against him because Soushi once called his tanuki form cute and that crushed Watanuki's pride. Soushi tries apologizing for not choosing the right word in his attempt to comfort Watanuki, but Watanuki is still mad at him.
* InsecureLoveInterest: As much of a stalker as he is, Soushi honestly doesn't believe he's worthy of Ririchiyo. To him, being her servant is the best he can hope for. Even after becoming a couple, Ririchiyo has trouble getting Soushi to think of himself as her equal.
* InterruptedSuicide: In Chapter 18, [[spoiler:Soushi gets cursed by Mikoto and tries to kill himself before he turns into a mindless monster. Ririchiyo stops him, but Soushi dies anyway because Mikoto decapitates one of his clones.]]
* IOweYouMyLife: To Ririchiyo. It wasn't until after getting to know her through her letters that he began to develop into his own person.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: His one and only desire is to see Ririchiyo happy every day of her life. When he says he'd do anything for her, he really does mean it.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: He wields a katana in his youkai form.
* LadyAndKnight: Soushi became a SS agent because he wants to be Ririchiyo's loyal bodyguard who devotes himself to her. He plays the role of a White Knight because Ririchiyo is a good person, but his personality has elements of a Black Knight.
* LadykillerInLove: Soushi seduced many women in his past, but he was merely using them as a means to get his freedom. It was when he got to know Ririchiyo that Soushi fell in love for real and he has been devoted to her ever since.
* LoveBeforeFirstSight: Kagerou made him write replies to the letters from Ririchiyo. Soushi got to know her rather well throughout her letters and eventually developed genuine feelings for her even though he had never met her before.
* LovingDetails: There doesn't seem to be one thing that Soushi doesn't know about Ririchiyo. In Episode 9, he gives a laundry list of Ririchiyo's likes, dislikes, hobbies and daily routine... When all Zange asked was if Ririchiyo liked dogs or cats better.
* ManipulativeBastard: He got his way through life by stealthily exploiting other people, even his friends, which he's still all too willing to do even now. The only person he will ''not'' exploit is Ririchiyo.
* MeaningfulName: Miketsukami means "Great Fox God".
* MistressAndServantBoy: He willingly chose to be Ririchiyo's "dog", and is quite an eager one at that. It gets PlayedWith because Ririchiyo never acts as his superior and is actually disturbed by his submissiveness and excessive devotion. Once they start a romantic relationship, Ririchiyo tries to get Soushi to act more like a boyfriend instead of a servant, but it's hard for him.
* MoreExperiencedChasesTheInnocent: An interesting take on it. Back when his family kept him under house arrest, Soushi gradually obtained his freedom as he seduced the women in the household. Then he got to know the sheltered and friendless {{Ojou}} Ririchiyo through her letters to Kagerou. Ririchiyo's pure and sentimental spirit caused Soushi to feel real emotions for the first time, mainly out of love for her. Soushi became Ririchiyo's SS agent to be close to her, but doesn't expect her to reciprocate his feelings because he sees himself as corrupted due to his past. Ririchiyo still falls in love with him and they become a couple.
* MundaneUtility: He's been seen using his duplication abilities to help with chores.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Silver-tinged, but close enough. It actually ''does'' turns white when he's in his demon form in the anime though.
* NoSocialSkills: Soushi admits he doesn't really know how to interact with other people other than acting like a servant, since that was the only mean of contact with others he had for most of his life.
* NotWithThemForTheMoney: From the very beginning, Soushi makes it clear to Ririchiyo that his devotion to her has nothing to do with her family status. It's later revealed that Ririchiyo was, in fact, the first woman Soushi became interested in because of her personality instead of a social position he could exploit.
* OfficialCouple: With Ririchiyo. They start dating near the end of the first part of the story. Their relationship enters shaky grounds in the second part [[spoiler:now that they've been reincarnated, and Ririchiyo's declared that she only loves his past self]]. However, [[spoiler:things turn out well in the third part and Soushi and Ririchiyo are now a happy couple in the new timeline.]]
* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler:At the end of Part I, Inugami kills him by cutting off his clone's head, a damage that's instantly transmitted to Soushi.]]
* PlayingCyrano: While working under Kagerou, Soushi was made write letters for Ririchiyo in his master's place because Kagerou didn't want to do it himself. Instead of responding the letters like Kagerou would, Soushi wrote them in a way that he would make Ririchiyo like Kagerou because he felt that was part of his job. As they exchanged letters through several years, Soushi ended up falling in love with Ririchiyo, but he was saddened by the thought that the one she was interested in was Kagerou, not him. However, Ririchiyo reveals she always knew Kagerou wasn't the one replying her letters, which makes Soushi feel overjoyed at Ririchiyo being able to notice him right from the start.
* PowerDyesYourHair: His hair color becomes white in his youkai form.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: Before he met Ririchiyo, Soushi lived by appealing to people in higher positions than him and doing whatever they wanted so he could use them to become free.
* ProneToTears: He's very sentimental for anything involving Ririchiyo. A simple gesture of kindness from her or hearing about her feelings makes him cry easily.
* PropertyOfLove: Soushi happily says all the time that Ririchiyo is his owner, referring to himself as her dog.
* SarcasmBlind: Despite the fact that one of Ririchiyo's defining characteristics is that she often says the exact opposite of what she means, Soushi tends to take the things she says ''way'' too seriously.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: A rare main protagonist example. Soushi only lives to love Ririchiyo and be her loyal "dog". He openly declares he would readily kill himself if he can't serve her and he has no interest in anything that has nothing to do with her. It's also a unique case where it's fairly justified since he basically was an EmptyShell because of his isolated childhood and only developed some form of personality as he exchanged letters with Ririchiyo, so his entire identity ended up built around her.
* SelfDuplication: He has the ability to form clones of himself.
* SexShifter: His shapeshifting allow him to transform into a woman.
* SexualExtortion: It's heavily implied (and made clear in the anime) that one of the things Soushi did to worm his way to freedom from his life-long house arrest was allow the women in higher positions of his extended family use him for sexual favors. Disturbingly, he started doing this in his early teens.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Ririchiyo is his only love. He doesn't even understand other men's interest in porn because he only feels attraction to Ririchiyo.
* StalkerShrine: He has a photo-covered shrine to Ririchiyo in his apartment room.
* StalkerWithACrush: He wants to be by Ririchiyo's side 24/7. He also has a habit of standing in front of her apartment door for hours as he waits for her. Ririchiyo calls him a stalker, but [[InsistentTerminology Soushi prefers to call himself her dog.]]
* StalkingIsLove: Downplayed. Ririchiyo ''does'' find Soushi's stalker behavior disturbing, but she loves him nonetheless. Even after she finds his creepy StalkerShrine in his apartment, she's only mildly shocked and doesn't break up with him.
* StepfordSmiler: Since he was very young, Soushi had to put up an obedient servant boy act as a means to gain his freedom. Behind his polite smile, he was completely hollow inside. It was thanks to Ririchiyo that he realized this and gained his own personality. Even then, he only can smile sincerely when he's with Ririchiyo.
* SubordinateExcuse: He wanted to become Ririchiyo's servant because nothing makes him happier than to serve her.
* SuicideAsComedy: Soushi's attempts to convince Ririchiyo to commit his {{Seppuku}} when she claims doesn't need him and wants to dispose of him are PlayedForLaughs.
* SuperpowerLottery: Soushi gets [[VoluntaryShapeshifting shapeshifting]], [[SelfDuplication shadow clones]], SuperReflexes, [[SuperStrength super strength]], and a CoolSword, which is a lot more than most other atavists get.
* {{Synchronization}}: Any physical damage his clones receive is transmitted to the real Soushi.
* TakingAdvantageOfGenerosity: His strategy to obtain freedom for himself when he was young was to appeal to the sympathies of household workers and members in order to manipulate his way to freedom. Ultimately, this undeniably got engrained into his personality.
* TranquilFury: Even when pissed off, he remains polite and respectful at all times.
* UndyingLoyalty: He's astoundingly loyal to Ririchiyo.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: {{Gender Inverted|Trope}}. Soushi has no qualms about hurting others, not even his own friends, if he perceives them as a threat to his beloved Ririchiyo's physical and emotional well-being.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: The signature power of Kitsune like himself. He can even turn into a child or a [[AttractiveBentGender girl]].
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Though there does exist goodness in him, his (self-admitted, even) twisted and manipulative personality qualifies him for this trope.
* AWolfInSheepsClothing: According to Kagerou, [[TheCuckoolanderWasRight who isn't far from the truth]]. Soushi plays up his charm and submissiveness to get people's sympathy and hide his more twisted, manipulative nature. He's not a bad person deep down, though.

An Ittan-momen (lit. "one bolt of cotton") half-demon with several tattoos on his tanned skin, he is the tenant of Room 3. His SS Agent is Nobara.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown
* ChickMagnet: He has had many girls confess their love for him, but he always rejects them, because he feels he will have to separate from them anyway, because while he can reincarnate into basically the exact same person again, humans will not.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Ririchiyo, who grew up in the same neighborhood as him. They have a LikeBrotherAndSister-kind of relationship.
* CoolBigBro: He's Ririchiyo's laid-back older brother in all but blood.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "Taiyou to Tsuki (Sun and Moon)", ending theme of episode 7 with Nobara.
* DullSurprise: Being a half-demon really isn't all that it's cracked up to be if you turn into what Renshou does.
* EngagingConversation: He casually asks [[spoiler:Nobara]] to marry him in the final chapter. [[spoiler:He was serious, though.]]
* FacialMarkings: He has a long, dark tattoo over his left eye that leads down his neck.
* GuysAreSlobs: Distinctly the only male in the cast who IS an outright slob.
* HandBehindHead: He places his hand behind his neck often.
* IncompatibleOrientation: He has an attraction to Nobara, who spends her time drooling over the girls. The last parts of the manga imply he may have a chance, though.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: With Nobara. Their overall dynamic is similar to a sluggish husband and his short-tempered wife.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: He's had a brother-sister relationship with Ririchiyo since childhood, which earns him Soushi's trust.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He's an attractive young man with shoulder-length hair that he keeps tied in a ponytail.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:With Nobara. In the final chapter, he proposes to her and claims he will definitely make her fall for him soon. Nobara tries to show some resistance, but there seems to be a chance that she will eventually give in.]]

* MundaneMadeAwesome: His demon form is a sentient, flying, roll of cloth.
* NiceGuy: He's a really easygoing and pleasant guy.
* NonActionGuy: It's hard for him to be a man of action when his youkai form is literally just a roll of cloth.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: He lends his jacket to Nobara when she strips naked to remove a youkai power-sealing kimono.
* YoungerThanHeLooks: Renshou looks way more mature than Ririchiyo or Karuta, but he's only two years older than them and even goes to the same school. This gets lampshaded by Nobara.

The assigned SS Agent to Renshou, Nobara is a Yuki-onna whose human form depicts her as a young woman wearing glasses. She likes girls and fashion so much so that, in her free time, she looks at adult magazines with beautiful women in them and shares them with Renshou.
----
* ActionGirl: She works as a bodyguard and has potent ice powers that allow her to easily freeze anyone except more powerful youkai.
* AdaptationDyeJob: While the anime gives her aquamarine eyes, Nobara has sky blue eyes in the manga.
* ArrangedMarriage: She is nearly forced into a political marriage [[spoiler:in the reset timeline. Renshou arrives just in time to save her.]]
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The blonde to readhead Karuta and brunette Ririchiyo.
* BodyguardCrush: She's Renshou's SS Agent and he feels attracted to her. While Nobara usually hates men, there's moments that imply she likes Renshou more than she would admit.
* BoomerangBigot: She finds male homosexuality gross, yet she's a proud lesbian. Renshou points it out when Nobara feels disgusted by Zange fawning over Soushi while she's reading a porn magazine with pictures of women.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has a well-endowed figure, which is emphasized by the cleavage in her outfits and by the ImpossiblyLowNeckline in her youkai form. Renshou particularly enjoys this attribute of hers.
* CharacterCatchphrase: She shouts "MANIAC!" whenever one of the girls is being cute.
* ComedicLolicon: She prefers her girls petite and doesn't hesitate to show it in overly audacious fashion. In bonus episode she's gushing over Kotarou's little sister and it's played entirely for laughs.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a mature and loving, if perverted, older sister figure for Ririchiyo and Karuta.
* DefiantStrip: The servants of her family put her in a youkai power-sealing kimono to keep her from running away from her ArrangedMarriage. Nobara doesn't hesitate to take off the kimono in front of the servants and her arranged fiancé, proclaiming she doesn't care if she must go back to Maison de Ayakashi naked in order to return to Ririchiyo and Karuta.
* DoesNotLikeMen: She detests men as much as she adores girls.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "Taiyou to Tsuki (Sun and Moon)", ending theme of episode 7 with Renshou.
* ElementalEyeColors: She has ice powers and fittingly, has pale eyes.
* TheGlassesComeOff: Her glasses disappear when she goes into her youkai form.
* AnIcePerson: She's a Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman), did you expect anything less?
* IcyBlueEyes: Unless you're a cute girl, you can expect the blue-eyed Nobara to give you the cold shoulder.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: She's all over the girls and claims to find all men disgusting, but late in the manga it begins to be hinted she may make an exception with Renshou.
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: In her youkai form, her kimono hangs off her shoulders and only holds up thanks to her obi.
* KillItWithIce: She threatens this just about any time someone or something annoys her.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: She gets annoyed at Renshou for his slacky habits, but they're generally very comfortable around each other as if they have been married for a long time even though Nobara hates that comparison.
* LipstickLesbian: She is always fawning and ogling cute girls, yet she also demonstrates feminine aspects like helping Ririchiyo with her hair.
* LovableSexManiac: She loves sexually harassing cute girls, outright tells Ririchiyo she wants to have a sexual relationship with her ''during their first meeting'' and one of her hobbies is reading dirty magazines. All which is PlayedForLaughs.

* OccultDetective: She has a side job as a detective for supernatural cases.
* PervertedDrooling: When thinking about girls. Sometimes accompanied by a {{Nosebleed}}.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She doesn't really care about people seeing her undressed because she doesn't give a damn about what men think of her body.
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: In Episode 7 she's seen teaching Chino to play the Japanese equivalent, Shogi, which some regard as '''harder''' to play than chess (though she does lose). She then suggests playing a card game called Hana Fuda which also has some notoriously complex variations.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Around men, Nobara is cold, indifferent, and no-nonsense. Around women, she's excitable, affectionate, and quite pervy.
* TheThreeFacesOfEve: The Seductress (the mature and sexy adult of the 3 main female characters).
* TranquilFury: Whenever she gets angry, she's [[AnIcePerson ice cold]].
* {{Tsundere}}: She treats Renshou with the same disdain she treats all men and constantly abuses him physically, but she does appear to tolerate his company more than she would do for other men. Later in the manga, it's hinted she might reciprocate his feelings, but hides it with annoyance at him. Most notably, she blushes when he declares he'll make her fall for him and [[spoiler:she doesn't say no to his marriage proposal]].
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: In Chapter 14, Nobara punishes Renshou for putting himself in danger with a German Suplex and an armbar.
* {{Yukionna}}: She has ice powers and her youkai form has her wearing a white kimono.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TomokazuSugita (Japanese), Creator/DavidMatranga (English)

Tenant of Room 2 and a half-oni, though a different one than Ririchiyo. He's Soushi, Banri, and Zange's former master, and Ririchiyo's fiancé. Kagerou is eccentric, straightforward, and narcissistic, calling the other tenants "pigs" or "human toilets". His SS agent is Karuta.
----
* AggressiveCategorism: PlayedForLaughs. According to him, ''everything'' that exists in the world only come in two flavors: [[ThereAreTwoKindsOfPeopleInTheWorld Sadist or Masochist]].
* AllergicToRoutine: He hates any kind of routinary lifestyle, so he often goes to travel all over the country.
* ArrangedMarriage: He calls Ririchiyo his betrothed, but she makes clear it was an agreement between their families.
* AttentionWhore: Whenever he's on the scene, he does everything he can to be the center of attention.
* {{BFS}}: His weapon is a cleave-like katana almost as long as his body.
* BigEntrance: Tries to surprise everyone almost every time he arrives on the scene. Compounded by his {{Leitmotif}}.
* BloodFromTheMouth: [[spoiler:He was found with this when he fakes his death in the rebooted timeline.]]
* BlowYouAway: His transformation sequence involves wind.
* TheBully: He put poor Banri through a lot when they were younger, including forcing him to fight with a snake while in small tanuki form.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "That's good, that's good!" Or alternatively, "I like it, I like it!"
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Don't let his ridiculous personality fool you, he's one of the better fighters of the group.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: In the one color illustration where see him without his mask reveals this.
* CuteLittleFangs: His canine teeth are pronounced, which adds to his vampiric appearance.
* DisposableFiance: The fact Kagerou was engaged to Ririchiyo seems to serve no other purpose than being the reason she and Soushi came into contact with each other, since she can't stand him, and he never shows any sort of interest in her that could remotely be considered "romantic" unless it's to get a rise out of either her or Soushi. Not to mention Kagerou didn't waste any time calling Ririchiyo his ex-fiance after she and Soushi got together.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "SM Hantei Forum (S&M Judgment Forum)", ending theme for Episode 5.
* DominoMask: He wears a mask over his eyes at all times.
* DynamicEntry: Some of his BigEntrance's involve this.
* EmbarrassingCoverUp: Kagerou's personality would make just about anyone assume he was being a lazy jerk when he told Soushi to write the letters to Ririchiyo. The truth was that he didn't want to write to her with his [[TheIllegible horrible handwriting.]]
* EyesOutOfSight: We can't see his eyes because he keeps them covered, either with a DominoMask or OpaqueLenses.
* FakingTheDead: [[spoiler:In the rebooted timeline, Kagerou fakes his own death to lure Inugami and Shimon into a trap.]]
* FourEyesZeroSoul: When he was younger, he wore glasses and was every bit as arrogant as he's now.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Nobody in the Maison de Ayakashi is fond of him. Zange and Karuta seem to be the only ones who actually like him.
* GondorCallsForAid: He calls on a ragtag group of allies to fight in the final battle.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: He has many adventures in his travels ouside the Maison, although we never see what he's doing. In the final battle, Kagerou assembles all the people from the Ayakashi mansions throughout the country who have been saved by him once to fight against Inugami's army of rogue atavists.
* HornedHumanoid: Due to being a type of {{Oni}} like Ririchiyo, Kagerou gains horns in his youkai form.
* TheIllegible: His handwriting looks like that of a preschooler. This is why he had Soushi write letters for Ririchiyo instead of doing it himself.
* IncomingHam: He greets everyone as his "human toilets" in his introduction in Episode 5. This doubles as an EstablishingCharacterMoment.
* InsaneTrollLogic: How he justifies a great deal of his S&M categorizations. ex. "This elevator's sure making us wait! It's a sadist!".
* ItsAllAboutMe: In Kagerou's mind, the world is his personal stage and he's the main star.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's an egomaniac who calls his closest friends his ''livestock''. He does care about his fellow atavists in his own way and is very helpful when the situation calls for it.
* LargeHam: His theatrical costume and general over-the-topness speaks by itself.
* LikeParentUnlikeChild: Considering what a decent person his mother is, how the hell he turned out such a loud and egotistical S&M obsessed is anyone's guess.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He has pretty long hair tied at the back and is very handsome.
* LovableSexManiac: His vocabulary is littered with references to various sex and fetish plays and the only gifts he ever seems to get anyone are S&M props.
* MarkOfTheSupernatural: According to a color illustration, he has purple eyes like Ririchiyo, probably due to his {{Oni}} heritage.
* MeaningfulName: His family name can be translated as "Blue Oni House" and his first name means "Dragonfly".
* MythicalMotifs: His theme song in the anime, and overall character design (except in his demon form) have elements that are evocative of a classic vampire.
* NeverSentAnyLetters: He was supposed to reply to Ririchiyo's letters when they were younger, but refused to do it because of [[TheIllegible his embarrassingly bad handwriting]]. He made Soushi write the letters under his name for several years and they agreed to keep it as a secret between them, but Ririchiyo had caught to Kagerou not being the one writing back to her.
* OddFriendship: Most of his friendships, and ''he's'' the one who makes them odd. Karuta stands out though since of the six (relatively) close relationships he has in the group, she's the only one that we haven't seen him have a childhood connection to.
* OminousOperaCape: He wears European-style clothes with a flashy cape that one would only expect to see in a theatre actor.
* {{Oni}}: Like Ririchiyo, he's descended from oni, but of a different kind than Ririchiyo.
* OpaqueLenses: When he was younger, his eyes were hidden by his glasses instead of his current DominoMask.
* PetTheDog:
** He (eventually) apologized to Ririchiyo for making someone else write the letters to her that should have been from him, and then proceeded to tell her that the one who really wrote them was Soushi.
** He also folded [[ThousandOrigamiCranes 1000 paper cranes]] ''by himself'' to wish for Karuta to get better after [[spoiler:she was attacked and then trapped in her demon form.]]
* PointyEars: He gets pointy, elf-like ears in his demon form.
* SirSwearsALot: He constantly refers to people by way of insulting them and he's the most likely to [[ClusterFBomb warrant the need for censor bleeps]]. In the dub they even once chose to have him drop a "fucktard" in lieu of censoring.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Yes, when it comes to trying to compare everything to S&M, he's absolutely ridiculous. But in the moments where you find him seriously analyzing a situation, or a person's character, he can be surprisingly accurate.
* ThereAreTwoKindsOfPeopleInTheWorld: Sadists and Masochists, and nothing else in between. This is even the focus of his ending theme.
* UnsexySadist: Appearance-wise he's quite pretty, but he's such a [[LargeHam hammy]] AttentionWhore about his S&M obsession that it's impossible to take him seriously.
* WalkingTheEarth: He's rarely at Maison de Ayakashi because he likes to go traveling. [[spoiler:At the end of the series, Kagerou decides to go traveling around the world to search for a new destiny now that the Hyakkiyakou has finally ended, taking Zange and Kuroe with him.]]

The assigned SS Agent to Kagerou, a Gashadokuro (large skeleton created from those who starved to death) whose human form is a teenage girl with pigtails. Though she appears to be "zoned out" most of the time, she's actually very clever and observant and likes tasty food.
----
* ActionGirl: She's one of the SS bodyguards and her youkai form is a {{Gashadokuro}}, making her very powerful.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:One of Zange's visions of the future in the final chapter shows Karuta and Watanuki with their child, who is implied to be Inugami's reincarnation.]]
* BadassAdorable: A very cute and spacey young girl with the ability to transform into a giant skeleton.
* BaitAndSwitchSentiment: In the bonus chapter of the SchoolFestival, Karuta has to pick someone she likes as part of a game. She immediately chooses Watanuki, making him blush... Then, Karuta picks the rest of their friends from Maison de Ayakashi.
* BetaCouple: Her romantic relationship with Watanuki receives nearly as much focus and development as Ririchiyo and Soushi's. Their dynamic as childhood friends contrasts the mistress-servant one of the main couple. They even have a chapter focused on them named "The Other Couple".
* BigEater: She is almost never seen without food in her hands. In fact, this is the focus of her ending theme.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The redhead to blonde Nobara and brunette Ririchiyo.
* BodyguardingABadass: She's supposed to protect Kagerou as his SS Agent, but she never really needs to do that because Kagerou can perfectly take care of himself and often joins the SS Agents in battle.
* BreakTheCutie: Happens to her at the end of Part I. [[spoiler:She's attacked and cursed by an enemy youkai, falling into a coma for several months. Eventually, Karuta is completely taken over by the enemy and becomes a mindless monster. She's then forced to be killed sometime after the youkai raid.]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Her childhood friend Watanuki has a crush on her and while it's sometimes hard to tell how she feels, Karuta loves him in the same way.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Karuta is very odd and it's hard to figure out what she's thinking.
* TheComicallySerious: She always does her {{Cloudcuckoolander}} antics with the same spaced-out facial expression.
* CursedWithAwesome: Becoming a giant skeleton is pretty cool and useful in battle, but Karuta laments that her youkai form isn't cute.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: Pink hair and pink eyes.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Being a {{Gashadokuro}}, Karuta has the most monstrous and scary-looking youkai form out of any atavist in the series. Despite this, Karuta is very gentle and good-hearted like all the other main heroes.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "sweets parade", ending theme for Episode 6.
* EmotionlessGirl: Subverted. She seems to lack emotions, but she's really just spacey. She shows her emotions a lot in dramatic situations.
* ExtremeOmnivore: In episode 7 she shown to be on the realistic end of this trope, as while a lobster ''is'' food, most people wouldn't eat the ''whole'' lobster, shell and all.
* {{Gashadokuro}}: While she usually looks like a cute girl, her youkai form is a giant skeleton. Also, Gashadokuro are believed to be created by gathering the bones of people who have died of starvation, which could be the reason why Karuta is a BigEater.
* GirlishPigtails: She ties her hair into twintails, fitting her ditzy, spacey behaviour.
* GoGoEnslavement: Kagerou puts Karuta in sexy outfits like a FrenchMaidOutfit and a UsefulNotes/{{Qipao}} plus a SlaveCollar. Karuta doesn't mind, though.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: [[spoiler:She asks Watanuki to kill her after she is left trapped in her demon form, but Watanuki refuses and tells her that he'll be with her forever no matter what happens.]]
* InconsistentSpelling: English subtitles of the anime spell her name as "Karuta", but the official manga English translation spells it as "Carta".
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The light to Ririchiyo's dark. Karuta is the innocent and pure-hearted {{Cloudcuckoolander}} in contrast to the brooding, SourOutsideSadInside Ririchiyo.
* LoonWithAHeartOfGold: Karuta is very weird, but she's a very sweet and kind girl who cares deeply about her friends.
* MeaningfulName: Roromiya means "Skull Temple".
* OddFriendship: Compared to her relationships with Watanuki and Ririchiyou, her relationship with Kagerou seems shallow. Turns out they actually regard each other with a lot of fondness.
* OppositesAttract: Karuta is a calm and soft-spoken {{Cloudcuckoolander}}, Watanuki is a brash and HotBlooded delinquent wannabe. Somehow, they form an adorable couple together.
* {{Protectorate}}: Watanuki is determined to become strong enough to protect Karuta. Not that she needs his protection.
* TheQuietOne: Her sentences are usually slow and brief.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: In the anime, her eyes glow red when she transforms into her youkai form.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Her hair color matches her innocent and sweet nature.
* ShapeshifterModeLock: What sparks the beginning of the series' CerebusSyndrome. [[spoiler:Karuta falls victim of a curse that leaves her trapped in her youkai form and eventually, she ends up losing herself and becomes a mindless monster.]]
* TheStoic: Karuta's face has the same calm, spacey expression almost all the time. She still has her share of NotSoStoic moments, though.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Her calm and spacey personality can make her come off as a little distant, but Karuta is a really sweet girl who cares a lot about others, especially Watanuki.
* SupremeChef: Given how much she loves food, Karuta has a lot of skill and knowledge to prepare a delicious meal.
* TaremeEyes: Her big and droopy eyes are perfect for a sweet {{Cloudcuckoolander}} like her.
* TastesLikeFriendship: When she first meets Ririchiyo, Karuta gives her one of her snacks as a sign that she hopes to be friends. Later, Ririchiyo offers a sweet bean bread to Karuta when the latter has no money to buy her own lunch. That's more than enough for Karuta to make Ririchiyo one of her best friends.
* TearsOfJoy: She cries out of happiness after [[spoiler:she finds out Kagerou only pretended to be dead in the final act]].
* TheThreeFacesOfEve: The Child (the innocent and sweet young girl of the 3 main female characters).
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: With Watanuki in their youkai forms. She's a giant skeleton, while he's a small tanuki that looks like a stuffed animal.
* TokenMiniMoe: Karuta is the only young girl in the agent side.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: If Watanuki is in trouble, Karuta will be the one to come to his rescue.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Her youkai form has an echoing, distorted voice.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TakuyaEguchi (Japanese), Creator/GregAyres (English)

Tenant of Room 1, Banri is a mixed blood Tanuki demon with an impulsive streak and is very outspoken. Labeling himself a "delinquent", he considers Soushi his rival because he called him cute, causing Banri to resent him. His SS agent is Zange.
----
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Even though he acts like he hates Zange and Kagerou for all the bullying they put him through, Watanuki still worries about them and will be relieved when they turn out to be safe.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:In the final chapter, among Zange's visions of the future we see that Watanuki and Karuta eventually have a child together. It's implied their child is Inugami's reincarnation.]]
* BetaCouple: With Karuta. The manga is centered around Ririchiyo's romance with Soushi, but Watanuki and Karuta's romance has a lot of focus too. Their dynamic as childhood friends contrasts the mistress-servant one of the main couple. They even have a chapter focused on them named "The Other Couple".
* BoisterousWeakling: He tries to pass himself off as a wild delinquent and wants to fight youkai even though his tanuki form is too weak for that.
* BullyMagnet: He spent a big part of his childhood being mocked and bullied by Kagerou and Zange because his tanuki form is small and weak.
* ButtMonkey: He tries to be a bona fide delinquent and earn some respect, but it never works out for him. Kagerou and Zange also take any opportunity to mock him.
* TheChampion: He aspires to become Karuta's protector.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He has been crushing hard on Karuta since childhood. The feeling is mutual.
* CompetitionFreak: Watanuki reacts this way at any opportunity to beat Soushi at something.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He says he will protect Karuta. Not that she needs his protection.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "one way", ending theme for Episode 4 with Zange (or at least he keeps butting in).
* DontYouDarePityMe: He gets seriously pissed at anyone looking down on his small and weak tanuki form.
* DraggedIntoDrag: He's forced to dress like a {{Meido}} for the SchoolFestival. To his horror, Kagerou, Zange and Soushi take a video of him crossdressing to embarrass him.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Natsume calls him Rascal. Watanuki hates it.
* FunSize: His tanuki form is a tiny, fluffy little thing. Watanuki, however, hates that everyone looks down on him for being small.
* FunTShirt: He almost always wears slogan shirts.
* HairTriggerTemper: Every single thing sets him off.
* HatesBeingCalledCute: He really hates it when others say his tanuki form is cute. Soushi once did it and Watanuki took it as the ultimate insult to his pride.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: The merciless bullying he suffered from Kagerou and Zange throughout their childhood is entirely PlayedForLaughs.
* HotBlooded: He might be terrible at being a delinquent, but he's really passionate when challenging Soushi and training to protect Karuta.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: He insists on being a delinquent because he wants to be someone strong enough to protect Karuta.
* IWantToBeARealMan: His goal is to become a strong and reliable man for Karuta's sake.
* JapaneseDelinquents: Watanuki insists that he is one. No one takes him seriously.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's an ill-tempered and loud-mouthed self-proclaimed delinquent, but it's obvious Watanuki is a good-natured, kind guy even if he tries to deny it.
* LastNameBasis: Only a handful of people address him by his first name (his butler, Kagerou, Chino, and [[spoiler:Mikoto]]), but oddly enough, this doesn't include Karuta or Zange, the two people he's closest to (it should also be noted that Watanuki addresses both of them by their first names without honorifics).
* ALizardNamedLiz: His family name is Wa''tanuki'' and he turns into a tiny {{tanuki}}.
* NonActionGuy: Despite claiming to be a delinquent, Watanuki has no fighting abilities and there's nothing his youkai form can do in battle other than look cute.
* NonconformistDyedHair: He dyes his brown hair blond because he wants to be seen as a delinquent. Not that he's very good at it.
* OneHeadTaller: He's taller than Karuta by a head.
* OppositesAttract: Whereas Watanuki is loud and HotBlooded, Karuta is soft-spoken and spacey. Despite their polar opposite attitudes, they're very much in love.
* PerpetualFrowner: He almost always has an angry look on his face because he wants others to think he's a tough guy. He only drops it when he's with Karuta and her cuteness melts his heart.
* PokeThePoodle: His attempts at being a delinquent include eating taiyaki from the head, talking to a guy named Shiroshiku, holding meetings with his "lackeys" (i.e. a group of old people) and helping with the housework to get the license he needs to ride a bike he stole.
* PowerIncontinence: He doesn't have a very good control over his powers and sometimes spontaneously transforms into his Tanuki form, often in response to an emotional state. He finds this to be mortifying.
* RebelliousSpirit: Subverted. He ''wants'' to think he's this due to his insistence at being a delinquent, but he's clearly such a good-hearted and naive boy that he never can bring himself to do anything too out of the norm.
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler:At request of his future reincarnated self, Watanuki wants to save Inugami from his eternal resets. The ending implies Inugami is reincarnated as his and Karuta's child.]]
* SelfDuplication: Like Soushi's Kitsune powers, Watanuki's Tanuki blood has given him multiplying powers. He has tried using this as a battle technique with limited success.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Manly Man to Zange's Sensitive Guy.
* TameHisAnger: Watanuki starts as a short-tempered and reckless guy. In the final act of the series, Watanaki has become more mature, levelheaded, and rational as he accepts others must handle the fighting and he has to focus on what he can do to protect his friends and stop Mikoto.
* {{Tanuki}}: He's one, but his youkai form is much harmless and way cuter than the traditional representation. He also barely has any powers or control over them that can make him useful in battle.
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: With Karuta in their youkai forms. He's a small tanuki that looks like a stuffed animal, while she's a giant skeleton.
* {{Tsundere}}: He tries to act like a tough, prideful guy, but he's actually a softie. Karuta can bring out his Dere-Dere without a hitch.
* TsurimeEyes: He's a {{Tsundere}} boy with narrow and sharp eyes. They also contrast his love interest Karuta's TaremeEyes.
* {{Uke}}: More than one omake insists that any relationship Watanuki gets himself into will result in him being the bottom. Yes, even with Karuta. He strongly objects.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: He knows Karuta can act weird, but he loves her a lot and thinks she's like a jungle hero. Near the end of Part I, Karuta [[spoiler:is left stuck in her youkai form because of a curse]] and she asks Watanuki to give up on her. In return, Watanuki tells Karuta he doesn't care what she looks like, he only wants to be there for her.
* UndyingLoyalty:
** He refuses to abandon Karuta [[spoiler:after she's cursed]], swearing to be with her no matter what happens.
** He was apparently one to [[spoiler:Zange]] in one lifetime, sacrificing his happiness to help him.
* UnknownRival: He calls Soushi his ultimate rival that he wants to beat to make up for the hit to his pride Soushi gave him by calling him cute. Soushi, on the other hand, has no interest in anything that doesn't involve Ririchiyo.
* UselessBoyfriend: He always says he's going to protect Karuta, but it's difficult when his youkai form is a stuffed animal-like tanuki and Karuta is a giant skeleton. He can give Karuta the best emotional support, though.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Again, much like the Kitsune, the Tanuki is known to have shape-shifting abilities. Watanuki still needs some work on the "voluntary" part, though.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: Zange claims he, Kagerou and Soushi are all Watanuki's ChildhoodFriends. Watanuki says they're just his [[TheBully bullies]].

[[folder:Zange Natsume]]
[[quoteright:218:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zangeprofile_9484.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MamoruMiyano (Japanese), Creator/BlakeShepard (English)

The assigned SS agent to Banri, Zange is a half-human, half-hundred-eyed monster. He is a very cheerful and eccentric individual. He's best friends with Kagerou. He also has a fondness for Soushi. His youkai blood gives him the power of limited omniscience, and he has a penchant for meddling in the lives of his peers, usually with positive ulterior motives.
----
* AloneAmongTheCouples: By the final chapter, Zange is the only member of the main cast without an official or potential romantic partner.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Zange shamelessly hits on Soushi and openly states he'd like to sleep with him. However, it seems like it's more a part of his goofy facade than an actual crush, given that he doesn't show any kind of problem with Soushi being with Ririchiyo and is actually very happy for them.
* AnimalEaredHeadband: He wears a set of black rabbit ears on his head.
* TheAntiNihilist: Zange shows shades of this. He seems to believe things won't end well for him and the other atavists no matter what he does, but Zange still insists on enjoying his life and making his friends happy as long as he can.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:He's Watanuki's SS agent because Watanuki once dedicated one life to becoming a doctor and save Zange from his illness, going as far as to [[MarriedToTheJob neglect his friends and love interest]] to search for a treatment. It was all in vain because Zange still died from his illness. In their current lives, Zange wants to be the one who protects Watanuki and hides his sickly condition to make sure Watanuki can be happy this time around. In his ending "one way", Zange is singing about Watanuki and how he should forget about him and live for himself.]]
* BloodFromTheMouth: He appears to collapse in front of Watanuki and Watanuki thinks Zange is coughing blood. It was just ketchup, though. Maybe.
* BrokenBird: He reveals that he more or less remembers everything in his past lives, and observes that destiny repeats with all of the atavists coming to the same tragic ends over and over again, implying that [[YouCantFightFate he tried but failed to make things better]]. This resulted in his StepfordSmiler personality and his philosophy that the other atavists should just enjoy life while they can.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: While all SS Agents are this to some extent, Zange takes it ''literally''.
* CampGay: He's quite the fabulous chap and has a tendency to flirt with Soushi. Might be subverted as it's implied this is part of his silly facade.
* CastFromHitpoints: He collapses whenever he uses his full power because it takes such a huge toll on his body.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Can't we all just get along?"
* ChivalrousPervert: He's a genuinely a caring and friendly guy and not much of a skirt-chaser, but he seems to like showing off the fact that with his powers he can see, and describe in detail, what kind of underwear Ririchiyo's wearing on a given day.
* CoolBigBro: Self-described this in his introduction chapter. Quirkiness aside, he's actually pretty effective. He switches between this and TeamMom to the group.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Red hair and eyes.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: From a young age, Zange has been able to recall his previous lives, how they ended, and how his sickly body caused sadness for him and his friends [[spoiler:such as Watanuki]] so many times.
* DefinitelyJustACold: He plays off his fainting as simply anemia. It's actually his CastFromHitpoints ability.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "one way", ending theme for Episode 4 with Banri (or at least the latter keeps butting in).
* {{Expy}}: His [[EyesAlwaysShut eyes that are usually shut]], trickster personality, innate ability to know more than he lets on, and habit of teasing that he has some sort of secret, make him seem like a more flamboyant but unequivocally good version of Xellos from ''{{Literature/Slayers}}''.
* ExtraEyes: His youkai blood gives him these, which he can use to search for information.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Unless he's being serious and/or using his power, his visible eye is almost always closed.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: His entire body is covered in eyes, presumably a hundred of them, considering that his ancestry is that of a Hyakume, or Hundred-Eyes monster.
* EyeSpy: One of his powers as the atavist of the Hyakume is projecting tons of {{Faceless Eye}}s around the city. He uses this to find the missing Karuta after she runs away from the hospital.
* FaintingSeer: His clairvoyant powers cause him to faint when he uses them too much.
* FingerWag: He's often depicted with his index finger in front of his mouth.
* ForHappiness: Much of his character is built upon doing all sorts of things to ensure the happiness of his friends. [[IJustWantMyBelovedToBeHappy He doesn't seem to care much about himself, though]]. His DoItYourselfThemeTune even has lyrics that reflect this attitude, in this case specifically for Watanuki.
* FunPersonified: He likes playing or making people laugh, and he often gathers everyone to participate in games and activities together. He's also one of the only characters who genuinely enjoys Kagerou's crazy hijinks. Okay, so he's a StepfordSmiler, but he should really get points for trying.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: On the surface, he gives the impression of being a shifty character (and that he enjoys being seen as such). He also tends to do things at the expense of the comfort of his friends. But the reality is he's a really nice guy, and more often than not, what he does is for their benefit in the long run. Kagerou calls him out on it.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: His hair bangs hide his right eye that's covered in bandages to [[PowerLimiter limit his youkai power]].
* InhumanEyeConcealers: The hundred eyes all over his body are usually covered up under layers of clothes.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: He displays some feminine mannerisms, especially sround Soushi. Although this is mostly part of his goofy act.
* {{Keet}}: He's almost always cheerful and happy-go-lucky.
* LaughThemselvesSick: His reaction to Watanuki comparing Karuta to Tarzan. In general he has a habit of laughing somewhat inappropriately at his friends, though not maliciously.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He's a very good-looking young man with upper back length hair.
* ManicPixieDreamGuy: He's a little like one to everyone in how he tries to encourage interactions, but Watanuki and Ririchiyo in particular.
* MotherlySidePlait: His default hairstyle could be considered this, and to a certain extent he fills in the role as the TeamMom.
* MrExposition: He makes an exposition to Ririchiyo (and the audience) about what the atavists are and the sort of experiences they live because of inheriting youkai powers.
* TheNicknamer: He has given pet names to most of the other main characters. Chiyo-tan for Ririchiyo, Sou-tan for Soushi, Kage-tan for Kagerou, Ren-Ren for Renshou and [[EmbarrassingNickname Rascal]] for Watanuki.
* NonActionGuy: You have to wonder how he ended up with a job that's supposed to involve being a bodyguard considering his body is weak and his youkai powers aren't suited for battle unlike the other SS Agents.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: He isn't afraid of getting into Soushi's personal space or feeling him up, though Soushi never objects to it.
* NotSoOmniscientAfterAll: His clairvoyance lets him see premonitions of things to come, but he doesn't have control of when he sees them and the visions are usually symbolic imagery that don't let him know what exactly will happen.
* ObfuscatingDisability: His covered up right eye works perfectly fine. He keeps it hidden for PowerLimiter purposes.
* PastLifeMemories: All the atavists are reincarnations and supposedly can remember their previous lives to some extent, but Zange appears to be able to always remember his past lives much more clearly than others.
* ThePollyanna: When introducing himself to Ririchiyo, Zange says some pretty disturbing things about his past with a grin and falsetto.
* PowerLimiter: His eye bandages serve to limit his youkai power.
* ThePrankster: He likes playing pranks.
* {{Psychometry}}: One of his powers is feeling emotions and seeing memories from objects. [[spoiler:This is why he passes out when he and his friends find the letters from their future selves.]]
* QuizzicalTilt: Does this often, but mostly to tease the others.
* RepetitiveName: Zange and Natsume are both written with the kanji for summer in Japanese.
* RoseHairedSweetie: He has rose-colored hair and is almost permanently happy and fun-loving.
* SadClown: He tends to distract people with jokes when he's overworked himself or isn't feeling his best because he doesn't want his friends to "waste themselves" trying to look after him [[spoiler:like what happened with Watanuki in a previous life]].
* {{Seers}}: His youkai powers let him see symbolic visions of the future from time to time.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Sensitive Guy to Watanuki's Manly Man.
* SharpDressedMan: He usually wears the standard SS uniform; a black suit with a gray undershirt and red tie.
* ShipperOnDeck: Ships Watanuki/Karuta, if the amount of times his meddling is to get them to have time alone together is any indication. He also seems to support Ririchiyo and Soushi.
* StepfordSmiler: He's always laughing and smiling, but deep down he's dealing with the sadness and loneliness of his powers making him sickly and feeling like he's destined to reincarnate forever to meet with the same friends who can rarely remember the past.
* TeamMom: Self-described as the "mother" of his friends.
* TensionCuttingLaughter: He usually reduces the tension in the scene with a good laugh or joke.
* ThirdEye: He has one that he usually keeps covered under his bandages.
* TookALevelInKindness: Zange wasn't always as nice and friendly as he's now. When he was younger, his powers made him see the darkest sides of the people around him and this made him distrust and look down on everyone. He changed after he started to understand people can be good despite their flaws.
* TricksterMentor: Zange often plays pranks and meddles in the lives of the other characters in such a way that people question whether he's a nice guy or not, especially in the cases of Ririchiyo and Watanuki. His actions usually end up helping them with their problems in one way or another.
* UnhappyMedium: Inheriting the clairvoyant powers of the Hyakume is a great burden for his body, resulting in his poor health. He can also remember all his past lives and the tragedies that came along with them much more clearly than any other atavist can.
* UtilityPartyMember: His clairvoyant powers are definitely useful, but their primary use is for information gathering and they've proven to put a strain on his health in the process.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:In every single of his lives, Zange dies young because his body can't handle the strain of the Hyakume's power.]]

!!Maison de Ayakashi's Staff

[[folder:Chino Kotomura]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chino_kotomura.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkiToyosaki (Japanese), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (English)

A cheerful maid that works in Maison de Ayakashi.
----
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: She plays the Boke (the silly, goofy maid) to Ayumu's Tsukkomi (the grumpy, world-weary maid).
* BrutalHonesty: When Watanuki wants to look for Karuta out of fear delinquents might have done something to her, Chino tells him he can't do anything if Karuta is in trouble because he's a kid and a small tanuki. Watanuki doesn't deny that's true even if it hurts him.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her human form has the biggest boobs among the girls in the Maison. Her large, bouncing chest causes the flat-chested Ririchiyo to get some ACupAngst and the lesbian Nobara sure likes to stare at it.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She's kinda spacey and often seems stuck in her own little world.
* ContrastingReplacementCharacter: In Part II, Chino's reincarnation replaces Karuta as the other young female resident of Maison de Ayakashi and Ririchiyo's classmate. Her being a GenkiGirl who isn't that close to Ririchiyo directly contrasts Karuta who's a {{stoic}} {{Cloudcuckoolander}} and one of Ririchiyo's best friends.
* {{Expy}}: She looks (and often acts) like an older, bustier Yui Hirasawa from ''Manga/KOn'', complete with sharing [[Creator/AkiToyosaki the same Japanese voice actress]].
* GenkiGirl: She's perpetually happy and performs her job with passion.
* MeaningfulName: Kotomura translates to "Village of Small People".
* {{Meido}}: She works as a maid at Maison de Ayakashi.
* MundaneUtility: Her tiny Koropokkuru form helps her clean really narrow places.
* OfficialCouple: In the epilogue, she mentions she's now dating a guy named Kage who was her SS agent in the If timeline.
* PerpetualSmiler: She's never seen without a smile on her face.
* PluckyComicRelief: As a GenkiGirl who is always happy and carefree, Chino's only purpose is to bring in light-hearted humor to the scenes where she shows up.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: She has the ancestry of a Koropokkuru, and thus can transform into a really small form.

[[quoteright:234:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ayumu_warashibe.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TakahiroMizushima (Japanese), Creator/IllichGuardiola (English)

Another maid who works at the Maison and crossdresses in a FrenchMaidOutfit.
----
* BerserkButton: He protests whenever other calls him "Tranny".
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: He plays the Tsukkomi (the grumpy, world-weary maid) to Chino's Boke (the silly, goofy maid).
* CampGay: He dresses like a maid, wears heavy makeup, and can't resist Soushi's charms.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Often acts as this for Chino.
* ALizardNamedLiz: His surname Warashibe refers to him being a ZashikiWarashi.
* PerpetualFrowner: He always has a sullen frown on his face.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: His personality is sensible and wry, which contrasts that of the GenkiGirl maid Chino.
* UncannyValleyMakeup: He wears a lot of eyeshadow and heavy red lipstick. It just looks freaky in a crossdressing man.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: He's a guy in a FrenchMaidOutfit, but other than Ririchiyo's initial shock when she first meets him, he's generally portrayed in a neutral light and no one comments negatively on his crossdressing.
* ZashikiWarashi: He has the blood of a zashiki warashi, which gives him the power to bring great fortune to any household he resides in.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YasunoriMasutani (Japanese), Mark X. Laskowski (English)

The third "maid" working at the Maison. He is a man with a somewhat outdated sense of humor.
----
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Possibly, given that his youkai ancestry involves an eight-headed snake demon...
* EyesAlwaysShut: His real eyes are always closed. His eyelids have eyes drawn on them instead.
* {{Orochi}}: His youkai form is an orochi, an eight-headed snake monster.
* ThePollyanna: Nothing seems to get him down. He cheerfully talks about his recent divorce and layoff.

[[folder:Jyoutarou Kawasumi]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joutarou_kawasumi.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Katsuki Murase (Japanese), Creator/RobMungle (English)

The cook at the Maison, though he often gets distracted by making cocktails instead while his son does most of the actual work.
----
* {{Chuunibyou}}: He likes to act like a bartender preparing fancy cocktails, but his son tries to remind him he isn't even serving a bar.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: He seems lost in his own world where he's a suave bartender when he's really a regular cook working at an apartment building.
* {{Kappa}}: He has the ancestry of a kappa.
* SmokingIsCool: He's always seen with a cigar in his mouth, probably to add to the cool bartender character he tries so hard to play.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: He's usually lost in his own world where he's bartender preparing fancy cocktails, while his son is the one who does most of the actual work in the kitchen.

[[folder:Kotarou Kawasumi]]
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kotarou_kawasumi.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MinamiTsuda (Japanese), Beth Lazarou (English)

Jyoutarou's son and assistant in the kitchen.
----
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: Despite being a little boy, Kotarou can act as a much more responsible and sensible cook at the kitchen than his own father.
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''otarou '''K'''awasumi
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Pretty much his only role is reminding his father that he's a cook and not a bartender, so he should do his job properly and stop pretending he can make cocktails when he can't do it even if his life depended on it.
* OnlySaneEmployee: By far the most normal and down-to-earth person among the Maison's staff.
* StraightMan: When his dad is acting like a bartender in front of Ririchiyo and Soushi, Kotarou delivers the punchline by saying they don't work at a bar and his dad can't even make cocktails.
* TokenHuman: He is, as far as we know, the only non-youkai person at the Maison.
* TokenMiniMoe: He's the only little kid among the employees of the Maison.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: Kotarou is serious and responsible, taking care of the kitchen while his father is busy pretending to be a bartender.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Homare Nekozuki]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/homare_nekozuki.png]]

The concierge of the Maison who has a mean face but a tender personality. He is extremely shy and embarrassed about his outward appearance.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He's dark-skinned, but it isn't mentioned what's his ethnicity.
* BakenekoAndNekomata: He has the blood of a nekomata, the two-tailed cat demon.
* BaldHeadOfToughness: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He ''looks'' like a tough bald guy, but he's actually shy and harmless.
* EyesOutOfSight: He always wears sunglasses, which keep his eyes hidden.
* FaceOfAThug: He has the face of a scary {{Yakuza}}, but the personality of a shy schoolgirl.
* GentleGiant: Although he's tall and scary-looking, he would never hurt a fly.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: The letter he makes for the time capsule looks like a love letter from a teenage girl and according to Karuta, Nekozuki is a firm believer of ThePowerOfLove.
* LoveFreak: He teaches Karuta the philosophy of ThePowerOfLove, telling her the strongest people in the world are married couples and couples in love.
* MeaningfulName: Nekozuki translates to "moon cat".
* OpaqueLenses: We can't see his eyes because of his sunglasses.
* ScarsAreForever: He has a large X-shaped scar in the middle of his face.
* ScaryBlackMan: Subverted. He's a large dark-skinned man who anyone would mistake for a deadly {{Yakuza}} at first glance, but he's completely harmless.
* ShrinkingViolet: He's so shy that he shoves his face into a wall to hide himself when meeting new people.
* SinisterShades: Subverted. He always wears shades and looks like a {{Yakuza}}, making others think he's scary. Despite his appearance, his personality is anything but sinister.
* TheVoiceless: He never speaks.

!!Other Atavists

[[folder:Shimon Satorigahara]]
[[quoteright:209:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shimon_satorigahara.jpg]]

She is the one responsible for the creation of the Maison de Ayakashi as part of her struggle to gain civil rights for other atavists back when she was younger. Known as the atavist with the strongest spiritual power, she has the ability, similar to that of Zange, of omniscience. Her power is so strong that she must stay cooped up at her family residence away from other people so she doesn't get overwhelmed by information.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''himon '''S'''atorigahara
* AmbiguousInnocence: [[spoiler:Shimon doesn't seem to understand what an evil thing she's doing by causing the Hyakkiyakou so she can read the deceased atavists' "stories". She sees it no different from reading a book or watching a movie to entertain herself and she thinks there's really nothing wrong with having the atavists killed because they can be reborn anyway.]]
* AuntiePennybags: The main characters are a bit taken aback when meeting her for the first time; her personality doesn't really fit her status and wealth.
* BigGood: She founded the Maison de Ayakashi and was responsible for encouraging peace amongst atavists rather than hunting them down. [[spoiler:Subverted when it's revealed she's actually TheWomanBehindTheMan.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Shimon is introduced as a kind and friendly old woman who has being the main representative of the atavists, having helped them blend in better with society and created the Maison de Ayakashi so they don't have to live confided in their households. [[spoiler:Part III reveals Shimon's real intention for giving atavists more freedom is creating more interesting life stories that she will read when they die and she makes records from their memories. She orders Inugami to create the Hyakkiyakou to kill as many atavists as possible so Shimon reads their memories.]]
* BlessedWithSuck: Due to her overwhelming power, she has to stay secluded from other people or she'd be overwhelmed by information. Her only constant companion appears to be her part-tengu servant [[spoiler:and Mikoto]].
* CoolOldLady: Despite being an elderly woman, Shimon is peppy and jovial like a teenage girl. [[spoiler:After the timeskip, her new incarnation is a very young girl.]]
* EvilAllAlong: [[spoiler:The atavists thought of Shimon as a benevolent and respectable person who was helping them adapt to human society. The final act of the series reveals Shimon is the one who sends Mikoto to kill the atavists, all so she can read their life stories from their dead bodies.]]
* FreudianExcuse: Shimon has never left the Satorigahara household because her telepathic youkai powers are too strong, so she gets excited when she can read the minds and memories of atavists from the outside world. [[spoiler:Since dead atavists won't show any resistance to Shimon reading their life stories, Shimon sends Mikoto to kill them for her own amusement.]]
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: [[spoiler:Living her entire life secluded from the outside world has resulted in Shimon becoming obsessed with reading the minds of the atavists to learn their life stories. She organizes the Hyakkiyakou with Inugami's help to get as many dead atavists as she can just to see their stories.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: She only cares about what she wants and will do anything to get it, without even considering how it might affect others. [[spoiler:She doesn't even care about having people killed just so she can get to know their stories from their corpses.]]
* IWasQuiteALooker: She was really cute when she was a young girl, [[spoiler:as her reincarnation shows]].
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler:She's perfectly happy with people dying so long as she gets an interesting story out of it.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To [[spoiler:Inugami, who can't bear the thought of living without her to the point that he keeps resetting time just so he can spend more time with her after she dies and kill atavists to keep her happy.]]
* LonelyTogether: She was this with [[spoiler:Mikoto in the original timeline. They bonded because their status as atavists forced them to live isolated from the outside world.]]
* MayflyDecemberRomance: [[spoiler:In the original timeline, after Mikoto became TheAgeless Shimon promised to remain with him even when she grew old and he stayed the same. Shimon wanted to let her reincarnations keep Mikoto company, but Mikoto only wanted the Shimon he knew, which is why he started resetting time after she died.]]
* MeaningfulName: Shimon can translate to "Thinking Family Crest" and Satorigahara translates to "Field of Enlightenment".
* MysticalWhiteHair: Her natural silver hair is a hint of her great spiritual power.
* PowerIncontinence: Her {{Telepathy}} can't be turned off.
* PsychopathicWomanchild: Because she has never been allowed to go outside her family's estate, Shimon still acts very curious and cheery as she did in her youth. While this makes her come off as funny at first, it later takes a dark turn when it becomes clear Shimon doesn't have the ability to feel empathy for others and doesn't care what terrible thing happens to them if those experiences can create a good story that she can read with her telepathic powers. [[spoiler:She created the system of Maison de Ayakashi to lure atavists out of their homes so they could have more interesting lives and then make Mikoto kill them so she could read their memories after they were dead.]]
* TheSociopath: [[spoiler:She seems like a kind old lady, but she actually only sees her fellow atavists as sources of good stories. To keep their stories from turning out "boring," Shimon manipulates them so they go out of their households and gain more interesting experiences. She doesn't care how much the atavists suffer when she sends Mikoto to kill them because the thrill of learning their life stories is all Shimon lives for.]]
* {{Telepathy}}: As the atavist of the mind-reading youkai satori, Shimon can read people's minds and memories.
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: [[spoiler:In the original timeline, Shimon got the idea that she and Mikoto could use the Thousand Year Sakura Tree to go back in time just for fun. Things went wrong and Mikoto got badly injured from wandering between space and time for several days, along with making him TheAgeless.]]
* UnhappyMedium: She can't turn off her powerful {{telepathy}}, forcing her to stay confined in her household without ever being allowed to go outside as hearing the thoughts of many people at the same time can be too much for her.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: [[spoiler:Mikoto's flashback shows Shimon was originally an innocent if mischievous young girl who only wanted a friend who would keep her company in her house. Since she could only know the outside world by reading the atavists' memories, Shimon became obsessed with the life stories she got to read from the atavists' corpses. Wanting to learn as many life stories before her death, Shimon sends Mikoto to kill the atavists.]]
* VillainsLoveEntertainment: [[spoiler:She founded the Maison de Ayakashi to lure atavists out of their households and makes Inugami start the Hyakkiyakou so she can amuse herself by reading the deceased atavists' minds.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Her hair is naturally silver and the fact that [[spoiler:she's revealed to be TheWomanBehindTheMan and she doesn't care about having the atavists killed so she can get a good story from it]] definitely makes her qualify for the trope.
* TheWomanBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:She's actually behind the Hyakkiyakou along with Mikoto, wishing to see the "story" in the mind of the dead atavists.]]
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:The final chapters reveal she's going to die soon. Hyakkiyakou is Mikoto's last "gift" to her before she passes away.]]

Shimon's assistant who is always beside her. She's part-tengu.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''uroe '''K'''arasuma
* BloodKnight: She gets quite... ''[[SexIsViolence excited]]'' when she gets to fight someone strong.
* CombatSadomasochist: She shows shades of being one, getting aroused when an opponent beats her down.
* EmotionlessGirl: She emotes very little. The most emotion we see in her is her [[InterplayOfSexAndViolence arousal]] when she's in battle.
* GirlinessUpgrade: [[spoiler:In Part 2, her reincarnated self dresses in more feminine clothing compared to her previous incarnation and she also has GirlishPigtails in contrast to her previous self's short hair.]]
* MeaningfulName: The "Karasu" in her surname means crow and she's descended from the crow-like youkai {{Tengu}}.
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: She consistently has no light in her eyes. She's also a half-tengu who seems to take some sort of sexual pleasure from fighting.
* SatelliteCharacter: She has no real role other than serving as Shimon's assistant and following her orders. [[spoiler:At the end of the series, Kuroe has no idea of what to do now that Shimon died as she always believed she would die in the Hyakkiyakou. * SexIsViolence: She seems to get turned on from finding an opponent that can give her a good battle.

A mysterious atavist with the ancestry of a dog god. He's the leader of the rogue atavists.

* TheAgeless: [[spoiler:His body was left permanently as that of a young boy as a side effect of trying to use the Thousand Year Sakura Tree to go back in time.]]
* {{Animorphism}}: As the atavist of the inugami, he has the ability to transform into a white wolf-like dog.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: [[spoiler:Shimon was the first person who treated him kindly and gave him a chance of freedom. That's why he chose to use that freedom to stay by Shimon's side forever.]]
* BigBad: Mikoto causes all the conflict in the story as he curses atavists to turn them into mindless monsters [[spoiler:and is the responsible for the deaths of the main characters in the first half of the story. The rest of the series is about trying to stop him from doing the same thing again.]]
* {{Curse}}: He can force atavists into their youkai form and drive them mad.
* DevotedToYou: [[spoiler:The entire purpose of Inugami's life is to be by Shimon's side and keep her happy, even if that means killing people for her sake. Since his unaging body makes it impossible for him to grow old with her, he keeps resetting time every time Shimon dies to be with her again.]]
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler:In his final moments, Mikoto admits he loved Shimon.]]
* EvilCounterpart: He can be seen as one for Soushi. They are both powerful atavists who were kept prisoners by their households and ran away in order to gain their freedom. [[spoiler:Once they were finally free, they decided to become the servant of a girl they fell in love with because she gave them a purpose in life.]] Also, they are both dogs with white hair. The only difference between them is that [[spoiler:the woman Mikoto is devoted to is quite twisted and makes him kill people for her own entertainment, in contrast with Ririchiyo who is a good person who cares deeply about Soushi and her friends]].
* EvilWearsBlack: To make obvious he's the bad guy, Mikoto dresses in a black kimono.
* FacialMarkings: He has a [[Manga/{{Naruto}} Sharingan-like]] tomoe symbol on his forehead.
* FangsAreEvil: As the descendant of a dog god, he has long fangs. They also fit his status as the villain.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He acts polite to his enemies, but his actions and motives are the exact opposite. He drops it when he's having casual conversations with his friend [[spoiler:Watanuki]]; he then openly acts like a total jerk.
* TheHeavy: He's actually working for [[spoiler:Shimon who wants the residents of the Maison to be killed so she can see their life stories]], but Mikoto is the one playing the role of the active villain driving the story and threatening the lives of the main characters.
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:He directly kills Soushi in front of Ririchiyo at the end of Part I. He has also killed the main cast several times over in previous time loops.]]
* HopeIsScary: [[spoiler:After the Watanuki from the "If" timeline befriended him, Inugami found himself starting to hope that it was possible for him to have a happy life where he didn't need to keep repeating the same hellish loop just to be with Shimon for eternity. That made him so scared that he went back in time again so he could pretend the "If" timeline didn't happen, but his attachment to Watanuki doesn't disappear.]]
* ImmortalImmaturity: [[spoiler:Mikoto has probably lived for over a hundred years worth of time loops, but his interactions with Watanuki have him acting like a bossy and easily bored brat who only demands good entertainment from his friend.]]
* InTheBack: [[spoiler:Soushi kills him by using one of his clones to stab Mikoto through the back.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: As far as Inugami is concerned, you're either garbage to be ignored or a tool for his [[spoiler:and Shimon's]] entertainment. He even treats his OnlyFriend [[spoiler:Watanuki]] like a slave.
* LockedIntoStrangeness: His hair was originally black, but it turned white after [[spoiler:he tried to use the Thousand Year Sakura Tree to go back in time and wandered between space and time for several days.]]
* LonelyTogether: With [[spoiler:Shimon]]. They were both atavists who were forced by their households to live isolated from the world, which is what drew them together.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:Because he loves Shimon and wants to keep her happy, Inugami created a hellish GroundhogDayLoop in which he starts the Hyakkiyakou to kill the atavists over and over again just to let Shimon get some entertainment from reading their minds.]]
* LoveMartyr: To [[spoiler:Shimon. He loves her even despite that her whims and twisted childishness have made him into an immortal and forced him to lock himself in a GroundhogDayLoop where he has to kill the same people over and over again just to keep Shimon entertained.]]
* MayflyDecemberRomance: [[spoiler:Mikoto became immortal because of the powers of the Thousand Year Sakura Tree. So he got to watch Shimon grow old and die while he remained the same. He found a way around this by using the Thousand Year Sakura Tree to go back to the time before Shimon died over and over again.]]
* MeaningfulName: Mikoto's name is written with the kanji for "fate". [[spoiler:He's the one who has created the tragic fate of the atavists being cursed and killed. The main characters defy that fate in order to break free of the loop.]]
* MoralityPet: Mikoto is the only person [[spoiler:Shimon]] genuinely cares about besides herself. [[spoiler:Once he dies, Shimon for the first time ever comes to feel grief over someone's death instead of excitement to know their story.]]
* MysticalWhiteHair: A mysterious atavist with white hair.
* NominalVillain: Turning the atavists into mindless monsters is very evil, but Inugami doesn't do it because he likes it or even benefits him. [[spoiler:Everything he does is for the sake of staying with Shimon and seeing her happy. Unfortunately, the thing that makes her the happiest is seeing the memories of atavists, which she can only do in full capacity when they're dead.]]
* OlderThanHeLooks: He looks like a young boy, but [[spoiler:he's really as old as Shimon. His growth got halted due to a side effect of trying to use the Thousand Year Sakura Tree to travel to the past. And that's not counting all the time he spent in several time loops not shown in the manga.]]
* OnlyFriend: [[spoiler:He was this to Shimon, being the only one to keep her company while she had live secluded from the entire world because of her powers. However, things took a turn for the worse when Inugami became immortal and Shimon started to get too interested in the atavists' stories...]]
* PetTheDog: At first, it seems he only likes to mess around with [[spoiler:reincarnated Watanuki]], but Inugami did care for him in his own way. He goes as far as to [[spoiler:leave him a goodbye letter before resetting the timeline]]. Despite trying not to, Inugami keeps his soft spot for [[spoiler:Watanuki]] even after that, [[spoiler:which leads to his ultimate defeat]].
* PintSizedPowerhouse: While he has a small body, he can take on a gang of big thugs like they're small fry.
* PrematurelyGreyHaired: His black hair turned white after [[spoiler:he tried and failed to use the Thousand Year Sakura Tree to go back in time]].
* {{Reincarnation}}: A given for atavists, but [[spoiler:it's implied he eventually reincarnates as Watanuki's son]].
* TheRunaway: He ran away from his household because they forced him to live under house arrest for being the atavist of the family.
* SingleTargetSexuality: He loves [[spoiler:Shimon]] and only her. [[spoiler:Not even a reincarnation will do for him, which is why he goes back in time every time she dies.]]
* SpeciesSurname: He's the only known atavist whose surname is the name of his youkai species.
* TragicVillain: [[spoiler:His body doesn't age and there's no place he feels he belongs to other than Shimon's side. Because Shimon became obsessed with reading the atavists' life stories from their corpses, Mikoto kills as many atavists as he can all in order to see Shimon happy. When Shimon dies, he repeats the cycle all over again and this has been going for possibly centuries.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: In a quite literal sense, to [[spoiler:Shimon. Inugami dedicates his unaging life to serving Shimon, even killing the atavists for the sake of her amusement. He goes as far as to go back in time every time she dies just to be by her side for longer.]]
* UnusualEyebrows: He has dot-shaped eyebrows that resemble those of old Japanese nobility. [[spoiler:In the final chapter, we see Watanuki and Karuta's child has Inugami's eyebrows, implying it's Inugami reincarnated.]]
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: The manga is a sweet shoujo romance with fantastical elements and cute characters. Then the plot takes a quite dark turn when Mikoto shows up to place a curse on the atavists which leaves them trapped in youkai form and slowly turns them into mindless monsters. [[spoiler:He succeeds in killing almost the entire main cast and it's later revealed he has trapped them in an endless cycle of time loops that only stop with his death at the end of the story.]]
* VillainousRescue: He inadvertently saves [[spoiler:Watanuki]] from some thugs that were trying to mug him because they were on his way and this made Mikoto pick a fight with them. Although he had no real intention of helping [[spoiler:Watanuki]], the latter wants to become his friend after seeing Mikoto beat up the thugs.
* VillainsLoveEntertainment: He likes to bully [[spoiler:Watanuki's reincarnated self]] for amusement's sake, as a requirement for their "friendship". He even punishes [[spoiler:Watanuki]] when he fails to entertain him.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He forms this relationship with [[spoiler:Watanuki's reincarnation]] in Part II. At first, it only seems like Inugami only wants to bully [[spoiler:Watanuki]] and treats him more like a toy than a friend, but it eventually becomes clear that Inugami does cherish their friendship.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He has white hair and is the main antagonist in the series.

!!"If" Timeline (Unmarked Spoilers)

[[folder:Maison de Ayakashi's Residents - "If" Version]]

!!Ririchiyo Shirakiin
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ririchiyo_partii.jpg]]

At the end of Part I, Ririchiyo was killed at the age of 16 after trying to stop the enemy youkai raid after they killed Soushi. In Part II, she is reincarnated, but has amnesia from the trauma of losing Soushi after he protected her. Once she does remember, she gains a resolution to protect everyone so that history does not repeat itself.
----
* AngstComa: She enters a coma after Kagerou forces her to face the fact that the previous Soushi is dead.
* BrokenBird: She has trust issues due to a lot of people having pretended to like her for being the daughter of the Shirakiin family. Remembering how Soushi died protecting her in her past life only adds to her emotional baggage.
* DeclarationOfProtection: She swears to protect Soushi and all her friends to not let them die in the Hyakkiyakou again.
* FriendlessBackground: Much like her previous incarnation, however, this time it isn't because of [[BullyMagnet bullying]], but because her classmates would pretend to be nice to her in fear of how her family would retaliate should they ever say or do anything that would anger her.
* HimeCut: She has the straight-cut hairstyle fitting of an {{Ojou}}, although she has cheek-length sidelocks instead of her previous self's longer ones.
* ImCryingButIDontKnowWhy: She starts crying when she first meets Soushi's reincarnation, triggering Ririchiyo's repressed PastLifeMemories. Ririchiyo still doesn't understand what's happening to her and apologizes to Soushi.
* LovingAShadow: She still sees the previous Soushi in his reincarnation, subconsciously using him as a ReplacementGoldfish for his own past self because he's allowing her to. Kagerou is the one who forces her to face that she's only loving a ghost portrayed by someone else. Ririchiyo then distances herself from Reincarnated!Soushi when she decides to try and think of him as a different person.
* TheMourningAfter: After accepting that the Soushi she fell in love with is dead, Ririchiyo can't bring herself to love anyone else, not even Soushi's reincarnation.
* MyGreatestSecondChance: After recovering her past memories, Ririchiyo gains a resolution to not let Soushi or any of her friends die this time around.
* NotAllowedToGrowUp: Of all of the characters, Ririchiyo's reincarnation is the only one who is the exact same age 23 years later.
* TakingTheBullet: In Chapter 34, she takes an attack from a berserk Kuroe to protect Soushi.
* TearfulSmile: When finally accepting the fact that Soushi is dead.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: She can't remember her past life at first due to the trauma of losing Soushi.

!!Soushi Miketsukami
[[quoteright:316:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soushi_partii.jpg]]

Soushi was killed in action at the end of Part I at age 23, protecting Ririchiyo from a band of evil youkai. His reincarnation appears in Part II. This Soushi has no memories of his past life, which troubles his relationship with Ririchiyo. He tries very hard to act like the previous Soushi to gain Ririchiyo's love, but things just don't seem to be working out between them.
----
* AmnesiacLover: He can't really remember how he and Ririchiyo originally fell in love in their previous lives. Ironically, he's the one pining after Ririchiyo because she's still in love with his old self.
* AttractiveBentGender: When visiting Ririchiyo during gym class one day, he transformed into a girl because he hoped that Ririchiyo would be more comfortable with the company of a female. Naturally, all of the guys in Ririchiyo's class are interested in the beautiful female Soushi.
* BecomingTheMask: Initially, he was just trying to emulate his past self to express his gratitude to Ririchiyo for saving him from house arrest. After spending time with Ririchiyo, his behaviour soon stopped being an act as his feelings for her grew stronger.
* ChangingYourselfForLove: He has modeled his personality and behavior after his previous incarnation to be the Soushi that Ririchiyo would love. He goes as far as to stop wearing glasses, to resemble the past Soushi even more after Ririchiyo notices there's something different about him.
* CompetingWithACorpse: Rather ironically, he's competing with his own deceased past incarnation because Ririchiyo still loves the previous Soushi over him.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He had it even worse than the previous Soushi since his family put him under even worse restrictions than before. However, thanks to Ririchiyo setting up precautions, he didn't have to go to the lengths he did in his previous life to escape it.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He wears a black outfit in his youkai form as opposed to his original white one, but he's still one of the good guys.
* DoppelgangerReplacementLoveInterest: He doesn't have his PastLifeMemories and this makes him essentially a different person from the previous Soushi. Even then, he still loves Ririchiyo and wants to replace his past self for her sake. Unfortunately for him, it doesn't work out because Ririchiyo decides the previous Soushi is the only one she loves. It's not until Chapter 34 that Ririchiyo realizes that no matter if he's a reincarnation, Soushi is still Soushi and she admits she could have loved him the same as his past self had they gotten more time together before the timeline resetted.
* GenerationXerox: All the Atavist's reincarnations retain most of their former characteristics, but Soushi's notable for almost flawlessly emulating his past self, despite the fact he, unlike most of the others, does not have his PastLifeMemories.
* TheGlassesComeOff: Unlike his previous self, this Soushi wears glasses unless he is in his youkai form.
* HopelessSuitor: He loves Ririchiyo deeply, but she can't bring herself to love him in the same way she loved his previous self. However, Ririchiyo admits that she might have given him a chance if they had spent more time together before the timeline got reset.
* IHatePastMe: Reincarnated Soushi hates his past incarnation for leading an immoral lifestyle to gain his freedom and winning over Ririchiyo.
* IOweYouMyLife: Before she died, Ririchiyo asked Kagerou's mother to release Soushi from his house arrest after he reincarnated. This is the reason why reincarnated Soushi decided to repay her by trying to replace the previous Soushi.
* LackOfEmpathy: He admits he doesn't understand nor empathize with other people's feelings and struggles. The only person he cares about is Ririchiyo because she's the only one capable of making him feel ''any'' emotion at all.
* LastNameBasis: This Soushi calls Ririchiyo by her last name, one of the first things Ririchiyo notes is different from the Soushi from the past.
* LoveBeforeFirstSight: Even though he lacks his PastLifeMemories, he subconsciously kept yearning for Ririchiyo his entire life and thought of her whenever he saw women with long black hair. He then learned about her as he heard she was his previous self's lover and she asked Kagerou's mother to save him from house arrest after he was reborn, which is why he chose to become her SS agent to repay her. When he finally met Ririchiyo in person, his feelings grew stronger and it didn't take long for him to fall for her as hard as his previous self did.
* LoveHurts: He loves Ririchiyo very much and spending time with her gave him many emotions that he didn't know before. The most prominent one being the pain of knowing he can't take the place of his old self in her heart.
* ReincarnationRomance: Even though he doesn't remember his past life, he still falls in love with Ririchiyo in the same way his previous self did. Sadly, she rejects him because he isn't the Soushi she fell in love with.
* RelationshipResetButton: He doesn't have his PastLifeMemories, which throws a monkey wrench into his relationship with Ririchiyo.
* ReplacementGoldfish: He lacks his PastLifeMemories, but that doesn't stop him from trying his darnedest to act like, and take the place of, his former self for Ririchiyo's sake. It doesn't turn out well for either of them.
* TheResenter: He's jealous and resentful of the past!Soushi for getting Ririchiyo's love. Essentially, he's jealous of... himself.
* SingleTargetSexuality: He has stated that it wouldn't matter if Ririchiyo was an old woman, a boy, or even an ''animal'', he'd still be equally attracted to her.

!!Renshou Sorinozuka
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/renshou_partii.jpg]]

Renshou was the only one of the Maison de Ayakashi members who did not die due to the enemy youkai raid at the end of Part I. He was waiting for the others to reincarnate for these past 23 years. He's become quite jaded as a result of living on while the others had to be reborn again.
----
* BrokenBird: Watching all of his friends die and living alone for a few decades did a number to his character.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: He openly admits he prefers the bosomy version of Nobara over her reincarnation who is still in middle school and is even more flat-chested than Ririchiyo.
* IWillWaitForYou: He spent 23 years waiting for his friends to reincarnate and return to the Maison de Ayakashi.
* TheMourningAfter: He heavily implies that he never could, or perhaps never wanted to, get over Nobara's death since he never really tried to get married in all the years he lived on his own.
* OlderAndWiser: As the only member of the main cast who didn't die at the end of Chapter 18, Renshou is already 41 (and has grown a beard) by the time we meet him again 23 years later after the youkai raid. Having lost all his friends clearly affected his personality, too.
* SoleSurvivor: The only survivor of the youkai raid.
* TeamDad: He plays this role to his friends now that he's much older and mature than them. Ririchiyo even calls him out on how he acts like a father.
* TookALevelInCynic: Renshou is much more jaded after 23 years. His change is starkly shown in chapter 35 in which he wanted to run away from Inugami with the other atavists because he was afraid of watching them die all over again. Nobara snaps him out of it.
* ZenSurvivor: He has become much more mature and jaded after losing all his friends during the events of the Hyakkiyakou.

!!Nobara Yukinokouji
[[quoteright:182:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nobara_partii.jpg]]

Nobara was killed at the age of 22 by an enemy band of youkai at the end of Part I. She was reincarnated, and is currently a middle school student living with Renshou.
----
* {{Joshikousei}}: She's now a middle school student and goes around wearing a SailorFuku.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: She wears a scarf in her youkai form.
* TokenMiniMoe: She was reborn a year later than Ririchiyo, making her fourteen years old by the time we see her again 23 years after her death and replaces Karuta as the young girl of the SS Agents this time around.

!!Kagerou Shoukiin
[[quoteright:283:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kagerou_partii.jpg]]

Kagerou died and reincarnated along with the others at the end of Part I. Now, he is 20 years old and currently living in Maison de Ayakashi in Room 2.
----
* BrattyHalfPint: He's an adult version of this, with his levels of obnoxiousness remaining the same, but he's noticeably shorter than he used to be.
* CruelToBeKind: He's ultimately right about Ririchiyo needing to move on from Soushi's death instead of projecting her feelings for the previous Soushi onto the current one, something the others were alright with letting continue. While forcing her to regain her PastLifeMemories is harsh, it's what she needed to stop running away from the past.
* DramaticUnmask: We finally get to see what his face actually looks like when Ririchiyo knocks off his DominoMask in chapter 25.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfWoman: He does this to Ririchiyo by forcing her to remember the past and face the fact that the past Soushi is dead and his reincarnation cannot take his place.
* HeldBackInSchool: Kagerou had to repeat ''four years'' of school. The result is that he's a legal adult still in his freshman year of high school. True to form, he acts way too proud about this.
* HeroicSacrifice: Subverted. He tries following Mikoto to the past to stop him and change the tragic future even though he knows the price for going back in time is becoming immortal. Karuta stops him right on time.
* HiddenDepths: He's the only one who thinks that Ririchiyo using the new Soushi as a ReplacementGoldfish is wrong, and ends up being the one that gets her to move on.
* IdenticalStranger: Fans have taken notice that without the mask, Kagerou looks unnervingly like a dark-haired Soushi.
* OlderThanHeLooks: He's supposed to be 20, but he looks nearly identical to how he did at ''14'' in his previous life. The fact he's kept a short haircut and isn't as tall as he used to be only adds to it. Although, he's confident he'll grow back to his original height later.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In chapter 25, he calls Ririchiyo a lonely and pitiful woman who plays the tragic princess and doesn't open up to others in fear of being hurt. He also calls her out on suppressing her PastLifeMemories and refusing to face the fact that the Soushi from her previous life is dead in order to get her to stop reenacting her past life's romance with Soushi's reincarnation.
* ShirtlessScene: He shows up a couple of times wearing only his cape as a top and very much showing off his bare front.

!!Zange Natsume
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zange_partii.jpg]]

Zange died of illness at age 24, two years after the enemy youkai's raid. He was reincarnated in Part II, and is 21 years old.
----
* EyepatchOfPower: He replaced his bandages with a patch for his new look in this incarnation.
* PantyThief: He steals Ririchiyo's panties to place them as an offering to the past Soushi's grave. Poor Ririchiyo is mortified.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: It doesn't involve a falling out of any sort, but Watanuki lacks his PastLifeMemories and didn't meet Zange in his childhood, so they're practically strangers. They also rarely get to interact with each other since in this life, Zange's not Watanuki's SS Agent, and there are moments where it's painfully obvious that Zange misses their old relationship.

!!Banri Watanuki
[[quoteright:317:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/watanuki_partii.jpg]]

Watanuki was killed in the battle between the Maison de Ayakashi and the enemy youkai at age 16. He has been reincarnated in Part II as a middle school student, but has no memories of Part I, much like Ririchiyo and Soushi. His SS is Karuta, and he is now the youngest of all the residents.
----
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: His constant attempts to be treated like an adult just make seem cuter.
* AmnesiacLover: Like Soushi, Banri doesn't have his PastLifeMemories, including his former relationship with Karuta. Unlike Ririchiyo, Karuta doesn't mind this and is trying to rebuild her relationship with the current Watanuki, although he's annoyed that she still treats him like a kid often.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Being the youngest, he often gets babied by the other residents, especially by Karuta, much to his dismay.
* BefriendingTheEnemy: He unknowingly does this with Inugami. Not being able to remember anything from his past life, Watanuki approaches Inugami and befriends him. Surprisingly, this manages to make Inugami develop a soft spot for Watanuki and their friendship even made him consider to put a stop to his eternal resets to live a normal life. Inugami then tries to forget about his friendship with Watanuki by going back in time again and erasing the "If World" with it. In the end, Inugami couldn't stop considering Watanuki his friend and this lead to his defeat.
* DraggedIntoDrag: He's forced to dress like a cheerleader at Nobara's cosplay party.
* HeroWorshipper: In sharp contrast to their previous selves' relationship, this Watanuki greatly admires Soushi for his physical abilities.
* JustAKid: He hates how his fellow atavists, especially Karuta, look down on him for being a kid as he was the last to reincarnate.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: He's the only one that never regains his past life's memories and none of his friends want to tell him about the Hyakkiyakou. Surprisingly, this works to everyone's advantage as Watanuki befriended and ultimately redeemed Inugami because he didn't know Inugami was responsible for the deaths of most of his friends in their previous lives.
* MoralityPet: He ends up becoming this for Inugami. After they became friends, Inugami found himself enjoying a world in which the Shimon he loved died and started considering living a normal life in that world. Inugami then tries to get rid of those feelings by resetting the timeline all over again, but he can't stop seeing Watanuki as his friend and this ultimately leads to his defeat.
* OnlyFriend: To Inugami. Watanuki was the only one, other than Shimon, to approach Inugami and try to befriend him. While it was unclear how much Inugami actually appreciated him at first, Inugami did enjoy spending time with Watanuki and considered him his closest friend.
* PrecociousCrush: He has a crush on Karuta like in his previous life, even though she's a twenty-year-old woman while he's still in middle school.
* ReincarnationRomance: He has a crush on Karuta's reincarnation, despite not remembering their relationship in their past lives.
* SpannerInTheWorks: It's his random friendship with Inugami that ends up ending Inugami's resets.
* TagalongKid: Not so much a child, but he's a junior high school boy, making him the youngest of the reincarnated cast.
* TokenMiniMoe: At 13, he is now the youngest resident in the mansion.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He unexpectedly made friends with Inugami, with their relationship mostly consisting of his friend bossing him around him and Watanuki calling him a slave driver in return.

!!Karuta Roromiya
[[quoteright:199:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karuta_partii.jpg]]

Near the end of Part I, Karuta was attacked and possessed by enemy youkai who began to use her for their own purposes. Eventually, she was completely taken over by the enemy and was forced to be killed sometime after the raid. In Part II, she has been reincarnated, and is currently 20-years old, the oldest of the reincarnated female main characters.

* {{Bifauxnen}}: Her BoyishShortHair and the suit she wears as Watanuki's SS Agent make her look somewhat masculine in an attractive sense.
* BodyguardCrush: She's Watanuki's agent and despite that now there's a 6-year age gap between them, it's clear that she still loves him.
* BoyishShortHair: In contrast to the GirlishPigtails her previous self used to sport, this Karuta keeps her hair short which combined with her SS Agent uniform gives her a more professional look fitting for a bodyguard.
* BrokenBird: She's notably more melancholic and reserved due to the events of the Hyakkiyakou in her previous life. She has also become overprotective of Watanuki in fear of losing him.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She's already 20 years old, but she's still the same spacey girl as she was at 15 in her previous life.
* IDidntMeanToTurnYouOn: She doesn't seem to realize the effect that her adult body has on a Watanuki who is just entering puberty.
* TheJailbaitWait: She loves Watanuki, but abstains from getting romantically involved with him because he's only thirteen while she's already an adult.
* MarshmallowHell: She likes hugging Watanuki, not realizing she's shoving her breasts into his face because she's taller than him this time.
* OneHeadTaller: Because of the 6-year age gap, Karuta is taller than Watanuki by a head in this incarnation. Hence, lots of MarshmallowHell for the boy.
* ParentingTheHusband: Due to Watanuki being six years younger than her, she tends to treat him like a child she has to babysit, something that he hates.
* ReincarnationRomance: She still has feelings for Watanuki in their new incarnation and she doesn't care that he doesn't remember their past lives nor that now he's now six years younger than her.
* RelationshipResetButton: Like with Soushi and Ririchiyo, Karuta has to build her relationship with Watanuki from the ground up since Watanuki can't remember the past. Unlike the lead characters though, things are going much better on Karuta's end.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: This Karuta is already 20 years old -- the oldest female in the household -- and has let her hair loose (in addition to being bustier) by the time she is seen again, 23 years after she died at the tender age of sixteen. The first thing Nobara does when they reunite is admiring how beautiful Karuta looks as a young woman.
* TearsOfJoy: She cries out of happiness and relief when Watanuki affirms they're friends, just like his past incarnation said they would be.
* ThroughHisStomach: She makes dinner for Watanuki every day and always makes his favorite foods.
