[[folder:Ethan Mars]]
->'''Played By:''' Pascal Langdale
[[caption-width-right:151:"Everything I did, I did for love."]]

Ethan is an architect with a wife and two sons. Two years prior to the main story, his elder son, Jason, dies in a car accident that leaves Ethan in a six-month coma. Now awake, Ethan remains depressed and stricken with grief. He suffers from agoraphobia and lives alone, estranged from his wife Grace Mars and distant from his other son, Shaun. Ethan soon discovers that Shaun may become the next victim of the Origami Killer, and is forced to go through five trials (danger, suffering, brutal suffering, murder and sacrifice).
* ActionSurvivor: Ethan is an architect with no combat experience whatsoever. He doesn't get fighting scenes, he gets running away scenes and survival scenes.
* AdultFear: Nothing does it quite like a serial killer who kidnaps children. And who can forget [[MemeticMutation JASOOOOOON!]]
* AlmostKiss: Shared with Madison, it's just up to the player if they go through with it.
* BeardOfSorrow: After the death of his son, Jason, he puts down the shaving cream.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:It's possible for him to save Madison from Scott Shelby in the final level by shooting him from behind just as he corners her and prepares to kill her.]]
* BigNo: Yells out one of these just before Jason is run over by a car, and after Shaun has been taken.
* ButThouMust: You don't want to make Ethan a murderer by doing the shark trial? Tough luck, you still have to at least start to go through with it. However, the final result is optional.
* ClassicalAntiHero
* ClusterFBomb: Ethan occasionally delves into these when he sees what his trials entail, but he only really goes to town if you don't do all the trials and end up without all the letters of the address Shaun's being held at.
* ConvenientComa: He goes into a six-month coma after Jason dies.
* {{Determinator}}: Becomes one if you have him complete all the trials.
* DirtyCoward: If you don't do the trials. Best example, you can refuse to do the Lizard Trial, and use your two hands to help you and Madison escape, but you end up being shot in the arm instead. The game even calls you out on it with the door leading to freedom in the Butterfly trial being labeled "Coward", should you choose not to do the trial.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:Any ending where Shaun dies. He either hangs himself in his jail cell after being convicted, shoots himself in his home surrounded by pictures of his family, or similarly offs himself in front of Shaun's grave.]]
* DrivesLikeCrazy: The Bear trial requires Ethan to drive at 60 MPH on a rain-slicked freeway on ''the wrong side of the road''.
* {{Expy}}: He is extremely similar to [[VideoGame/SilentHill1 Harry Mason]] in both appearance and personality.
* {{Fingore}}: Loses his pinky finger during the Lizard trial, if the player decides to go through with it. If you opted out the trial instead, Ethan will have the same finger shot off during his successful escape from the police. The only way for him to keep the finger is skipping the trial and staying locked up.
* GangstaStyle: Ethan uses this on the drug dealer briefly in the Shark trial.
* HappilyMarried: To Grace at the beginning of the game and [[spoiler:possibly Madison in his best ending.]]
* ImprobablyQuickComaRecovery: Implied. No one seems to mention the coma or physical therapy he would have needed afterwards as an alibi when he is suspected of being the Oragami Killer, as both would have rendered him incapable of doing so.
* TheKillerInMe: [[spoiler:Subverted.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: The player has the option to have Ethan commit a cold blooded murder for the sake of finding his son.
* MadeOfIron: Not to a great extent, but he can survive [[spoiler:jumping from a motel roof with enough stamina left over to escape the police chasing him and survive a gunshot point blank to the stomach from the Origami Killer in the final level.]]
* OptionalSexualEncounter: Between himself and Madison.
* PapaWolf: His thread of the story is his fight to save his living son, Shaun, from a serial killer. Get into it, and you'll see he'll go ToHellAndBack to save his kid, to the point that he could easily be a reincarnation of [[VideoGame/SilentHill1 Harry Mason]]. [[spoiler:Invoked, since the entire point of the tests are to prove he's a father capable of giving his life to save his son.]]
* PleaseWakeUp: [[spoiler:During his attempts to revive Shaun via CPR. If Ethan has come to the warehouse alone, Shaun ends up doing this himself moments later when he's gunned down by police outside.]]
* PlotArmor: Despite the ridiculously high number of situations he faces that would be fatal to almost anyone, Ethan can't die until near the end of the game.
* RoomFullOfCrazy: [[spoiler:In the worst ending, he commits suicide in a room full of Origami figures.]]
* SadisticChoice: All of Ethan's trials involve these.
* SayMyName: JASOON!
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler:Suggested, but it's ultimately a trick of his own mind. It's resolved when Ethan finds out who the Origami Killer actually is. Towards the end of the game, he believes his "other self" is and is testing himself to see if he truly cares for his son. This is not true, but makes sense. The game certainly likes to play it up this way.]]
* StressVomit: Ethan will vomit if you make him kill the drug dealer during the Shark trial.
* TraumaCongaLine: His son gets run over by a car, he ends up in a coma for six months, when he wakes up, his wife wants to divorce him, and his other son hates him. That's before the game even starts.
* WhatTheHellHero: Calls out Madison when he found out she's a journalist.
* WouldHitAGirl: Throws a little black book towards Madison due to his anger over her being a journalist.

[[folder:Madison Paige]]
->'''Played By:''' Judi Beecher (voice) & Jacqui Ainsley (motion capture)
[[caption-width-right:231:"There has to be another way."]]

Madison is a young photojournalist living alone in the city. Suffering from chronic insomnia and nightmares, she occasionally checks into motels, as they are the only place she can properly sleep. She eventually finds herself involved in the latest Origami Killer case, conducting her own investigations.
* ActionGirl: And ''how''. For your ordinary journalist, she does a pretty damn good job fending off serial killers.
* ActionSurvivor: Shared with Ethan.
* AllJustADream: Madison fighting the burglars in her apartment.
* AlmostKiss: Shared with Ethan, it's just up to the player if they go through with it.
* AloneWithThePsycho: In chronological order; she sneaks into Leland White's house only to end up trapped in the same building as a serial killer when White arrives home early; she pays a visit to Dr Baker, running the risk of being drugged and dissected; finally, [[spoiler:she decides to investigate the Origami Killer's lair, only to be held at gunpoint by the man himself.]]
* BadassAdorable: She may be a beautiful, young, and kind photojournalist, but throughout the game, depending on the player, she can quite defend herself very well in tough situations.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Madison is the most bright-eyed, well-dressed insomniac you'll ever meet.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Kind, compassionate, and more than willing to crush Paco's balls if he doesn't start talking.
* BikerBabe: She owns a motorcycle and she's a hottie, 'nuff said.
* CaptainObvious: "It's a painkiller, it'll help ease the pain."
* CassandraTruth: This is the reason why she [[CannotSpitItOut can't tell Ethan that she's a journalist]]. Not only that, but also afraid that he'll get a bad reaction when he found out about it ''which it happened exactly as she expected''.
* TheCombatPragmatist: Most notably in her brawl with Dr Baker, in which she ends up fighting him with his own power tools.
* DamselOutOfDistress: She gets into several situations where she faces a high probability of being raped, killed, or both, but she can escape from them on her own if the character performs the correct actions.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: According to cut content, she was a reporter embedded with U.S. soldiers during the Iraq War. The horrors she witnessed in combat left her with some serious psychological scars. And then there's the stuff she went through in ''The Taxidermist''.
* {{Expy}}: Madison's jeans, printed biker jacket, affinity for motorcycles and general look is very reminiscent of [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil2 Claire Redfield]].
** She also heavily resembles Creator/MonicaBellucci's character in obscure French film The Stone Council.
* FanDisservice: She is ''far'' from unattractive, but the striptease in Sexy Girl may be this more than {{Fanservice}} because Madison is being ''[[ShamefulStrip forced]]'' to remove her clothes by Paco.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: On just about every occasion she meets Ethan, he's been seriously injured and she has to bandage his wounds; this escalates into a desire to help him through the Origami Killer's trials and get the police off his back, to the point that she's willing to endanger her life if it means uncovering the clues, and finally ends in full-fledged romance. [[spoiler:This can end in marriage if the player allows Ethan to forgive her for trying to write a story about him.]]
* GoingForTheBigScoop: When not taking big risks for Ethan, Madison can be found taking big risks for her career; ''[[DownloadableContent Taxidermist]],'' anyone?
* HotScoop: She's a journalist and is ''very'' attractive.
* TheInsomniac: The twist is that her insomnia fails if she's sleeping in a motel.
* MsFanservice: Just ''damn''.
** Her MotionCapture actress is a supermodel, and Madison is introduced in a scene which basically consists of her roaming around in her apartment while wearing only a tank top and panties.
** Within minutes of her initial appearance in the game, Madison has an exceptionally long quick-time event in which she fights home invaders in her underwear. This scene has absolutely no effect on the plot.
*** Just like having her take a shower before the home invaders hit, with Madison flaunting her well-endowed upper body completely naked for quite some time.
** ''Especially'' in the Sexy Girl chapter, where she unbuttons her shirt, rips off part of her skirt so the bottom comes to just below her ass, and does sexy dancing in high heels. It would be especially heavy {{Fanservice}} if you weren't concentrating on the QTE to make her dance well.
** When she fakes having sex by moaning, etc. in Paco's office to trick his guard from coming in, leaving Paco's mouth dropped open in shock.
* OptionalSexualEncounter: Between herself and Ethan.
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:In the ending "Square One", in which her insomnia reaches critical levels and her nightmares turn into full-fledged halucinations.]]
* SecondLove: Depending on player choices she can become this to [[spoiler:Ethan himself]].
* ShakingTheRump: Did this when Paco forces her to strip at gunpoint, but she does it to distract him so that she can club him with a lamp.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Although she wasn't a soldier, cut content reveals that she covered the Iraq War as a reporter embedded with U.S. troops. She witnessed quite a few horrific things in combat and these experiences were intended to explain her hallucinations/nightmares.
* ShowSomeLeg: As she admits herself, she'll do ''anything'' to get the information she needs...
* TookALevelInBadass: See ActionGirl.
* WhatTheHellHero: If [[spoiler:Shaun dies and Ethan lives]], she will callously tell Ethan that life must go on and that she'd like to have a child with him. Thing is, she tells him all this [[spoiler:as he is standing over his son's grave a few hours after his funeral had taken place]].

[[folder:Norman Jayden]]
->'''Played By:''' Leon Ockenden
[[caption-width-right:150:"I'm not sure that's entirely legal."]]

Jayden is an FBI profiler sent from Washington to support the police force with their investigation into the Origami Killer. Jayden possesses an apparatus which consists of experimental augmented reality glasses and a single right hand glove called ARI, or "Added Reality Interface". This allows him to rapidly investigate crime scenes and analyze evidence. He is also struggling with an addiction to the drug triptocaine, which helps him cope with the mental side effects of using ARI.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: [[spoiler:If he dies during the investigation, this can happen if you get the "Uploaded" ending]].
* BadassBookworm: He is the most technologically savvy of the cast and an FBI agent.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:The endings "Case Closed" and "Resignation"]].
* [[RedOniBlueOni Blue Oni]]: To Blake's red.
* BrainUploading: [[spoiler:Implied during the "Uploaded" ending, which occurs if Jayden dies over the course of the investigation- but, ironically, not if he dies of an ARI overdose.]]
* ByTheBookCop: And he's a better man for it: he genuinely does good police work by sticking to the rules, while his [[RabidCop unhinged partner Blake]] apparently makes a hobby of wiping his ass with a suspect's Miranda Rights.
* ButtMonkey: Poor guy is already a drug addict and gets more bullying and disrespect from the police force than he deserves, and he always ends up in some seriously aggravating to painful situations. He even lampshades it himself at one point; reading his thoughts after he goes to interrogate Paco has him observe that he spent most of the investigation getting the shit kicked out of him. [[spoiler:To cap it all, the only ending where his situation makes a definite improvement is the one where he fails to solve the case and resigns.]]
* TheCombatPragmatist: As Jayden isn't exactly the most imposing member of the cast, he has to resort to a lot of dirty tricks to survive in hand-to-hand combat, especially in his second fight with Mad Jack.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Implied.
* TheDogBitesBack: Has his moments with Blake. [[spoiler:Also with Perry, getting the both of them suspended if Ethan dies]].
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:He will die of an overdose of Triptocaine if Shaun dies]].
* DrugsAreBad: Subverted; he uses Triptocaine to prevent over-exposure to the ARI. Norman gets killed by Triptocaine or ARI if he uses too much of either of the two. Makes for a bit of a ZigZaggingTrope, considering how often his drug relapses interfere with his investigation, and how his use of it isn't exactly doing wonders for his health. [[spoiler:See also DrivenToSuicide.]]
* ElmuhFuddSyndwome: His East Coast accent frequently tilts over into a childish rhotacism. "I wanna find da owigahmi kiwwuh JUST as much as you do!"
* {{Expy}}: He's similar to [[Series/TheXFiles Fox Mulder]].
* EyeScream: [[spoiler:If you take too long investigating with the ARI in one scene, he starts to bleed from his eyes. If you keep using it, he will eventually die.]]
* FairCop: He is youthful and a cop.
* FBIAgent: He is a profile but he must be a special agent since he is allowed to perform arrests.
* FightMagnet: He has to throw down with almost everyone he encounters. Almost always without backup.
* FunctionalAddict: To a point. Even with his addiction to Triptocaine which can interfere with his work and personal safety, he is the most competent officer of the police station (player involvement aside).
* GhostInTheMachine: [[spoiler:Seemingly his fate in the "Uploaded" ending, which would happen if Jayden dies at any point in the game before the finale.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has some unexplained faded scars on his face.
* GreenEyes: To show intelligence.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: [[spoiler:The "Resignation" ending.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Accusing Blake of being the Origami Killer will result in turning in his badge.
* OhCrap: His reaction to seeing [[spoiler:tiny virtual desk tanks in the "Case Closed" ending.]]
* OnlySaneEmployee: As mentioned below, Norman is the only cop who isn't a useless {{Jerkass}}.
* [[OnlySaneMan Only Honest Agent]]: The only useful reinforcement with common sense.
* PoliceAreUseless: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]], Jayden is the only law enforcement official worth a damn in the whole story.
* TheProfiler: He's even [[LampshadeHanging referred to as such]] in the game. [[spoiler:And he's actually spot-on.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He's the only cop shown to be trying to bring in the Origami Killer by the book.
* SanitySlippage: As he starts overdoing ARI, he starts experiencing visions of the ARI office world even without his glasses on. [[spoiler:This continues even if he succeeds in solving the puzzle and saving Shaun's life, and it's worsened to the point where he's hallucinating miniature tanks crawling over his desk.]]
* SharpDressedMan: Always in a suit.
* ShowerOfAngst: In his suit. Justified by the fact that [[spoiler:he was having some seriously disorienting and painful withdrawal symptoms at the time.]] The guy could barely stand upright at the time; taking off his clothes would have probably been extremely difficult.
* SunglassesAtNight: Justified, since ARI is high-tech crime scene analysis technology. Has a song now! [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5pPVqs4AvY]]
* TearsOfBlood: [[spoiler:If you take too long during Jayden's final use of ARI, his eyes start bleeding under the glasses.]]
* ThouShaltNotKill: Subverted if you allow him to kill Nathaniel and [[spoiler:Scott]].
* TomatoInTheMirror: In the "Smoking Mirror" ending, the man he is talking to is revealed to be [[spoiler:himself, before he dies from an overdose after passing through the DespairEventHorizon.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: And HOW! Norman gets his ass handed to him by Mad Jack and The Origami Killer in Fish Tank. Jump a few chapters later to round 2 with the killer in The Old Warehouse, and Jayden's fist-fighting him on even ground, ''bashing his head around like a pinata with a metal pipe, and '''can possibly get smashed in the face with a SLEDGEHAMMER AND SURVIVE!'''''
* TroubledButCute: Good looking but addicted to at least two substances.
* TurnInYourBadge: [[spoiler:The ending "Resignation"]].

[[folder:Scott Shelby]]
->'''Played By:''' Sam Douglas
[[caption-width-right:149:"Goddamn asthma, can't breathe when it rains."]]

Shelby is a former police officer and Marine who suffers from asthma. He is currently working as a private investigator conducting an investigation into the Origami Killer.
* {{Acrofatic}}: Despite being on the more unhealthy side of slightly overweight, Scott is still surprisingly able to hold his ground in fast-paced fights.
* AlliterativeName: Scott Shelby.
* BadassLongcoat: A typical fashion of a hard-boiled private investigator.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's an easygoing, overweight private investigator who looks after babies, persuades liquor store robbers to put down the gun and leave without resorting to violence, and he makes a mean omelet. He will still kick your ass if you challenge him. [[spoiler:Also, he turned out to be none other than the Origami Killer.]]
* TheCombatPragmatist: Scott isn't very choosy on how he takes his opponents down; assuming he doesn't actually have a gun on him, he'll often resort to using anything that can be vaguely classified as a weapon: lamps, panes of glass, bottles, furniture, [[spoiler:Samurai swords]], bits of scrap metal... and that's when he's not just pummeling them into submission with his bare hands. [[spoiler:This becomes even more obvious in the fight between him and Jayden on the conveyor belt, in which they end up attacking each other with just about anything in reach.]]
* {{Expy}}: He looks like [[VideoGame/SilentHill3 Douglas]].
* FatBastard: He can be downright cruel if it means getting what he wants. [[spoiler:Then comes the revelation that he's actually the Origami Killer.]]
* HardboiledDetective: His entire character is a throwback to this archetype. [[spoiler:And a subversion of it.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmgvr-TdsRo Scott Shelby's Main Theme]].
* NiceGuy: He is by far one of the nicest characters of the game, namely his PetTheDog moments below. [[spoiler:Though he is revealed to be AffablyEvil in the end.]]
* PetTheDog: Many, many moments. A big one where he treats the wounds of a woman who has failed a suicide attempt and takes care of her baby, or the scene after the incident at the watch repair place where he comforts Lauren as she's crying in the rain over her son's death. [[spoiler:Finding out the truth about him, though, leaves all these moments open to interpretation]].
* PrivateDetective: He spends most of his time investigating the Origami Killer. [[spoiler:Subverted. He's using it as a cover to investigate his killings and destroy any evidence.]]
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: As [[spoiler:a child]] he had an accent that sounded like it was somewhere between British,Irish and French.

!Secondary Characters

[[folder:Grace Mars]]
* AmicableExes: ''Almost''. There aren't any fights or arguments witnessed in the game, but it's clear that on some level, she holds Ethan responsible for Jason's death.
* HappilyMarried: With Ethan at the start of the game. It doesn't last.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Telling Blake about Ethan supposedly being the Origami Killer which resulted in Blake hunting down Ethan rather than helping him in finding Shaun.
* RelationshipSalvagingDisaster: One of the endings suggests that Ethan and Grace actually get back together in spite of their problems.
* WhatTheHellHero: She flings one of these speeches at Ethan after Shaun's disappearance. And while she said it under stress, though, and she almost immediately apologizes for it- before breaking down in tears, she does blame him for their son's death.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Grace is notably absent from a lot of the endings, with the exceptions of "Innocent" and "Ethan's Grave".

[[folder:Lauren Winter]]
[[caption-width-right:149:"I swore on my son's grave I would kill the man who murdered him."]]
* BrokenBird: She has not been OK at all since her son was killed.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Dark hair and eyes.
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: She is the one who fights the hardest to catch the Origami Killer.
* ItsPersonal: She is determined to discover the identity of the Origami Killer and has swore to kill [[spoiler:him]] upon doing so. In the ending, [[spoiler:"A Mother's Revenge", upon finding out that the Origami Killer is Scott, Lauren keeps her word.]]
* MeaningfulName: Winter is often described as the [[SnowMeansDeath harshest]] season, and Lauren is not a happy woman.
* MoralityPet: [[spoiler:She can be interpreted as this to Scott.]]
* RescueRomance: If she lives long enough, her relationship with Scott can take a turn for the romantic, as he kisses her goodbye. [[spoiler:If she lives to the end though, she will be less than forgiving upon finding the truth.]]
* {{Revenge}}: This is her main motivation to stop the Origami Killer.
* ShowSomeLeg: Subverted at the last minute in the level "Gordy Kramer's Party"; here, Lauren attempts to distract the stairway guards by performing a sexy dance. However, the guards are clearly under contractual obligation to not be DistractedByTheSexy, so at the end of the dance, Lauren pretends to faint from a drug overdose, drawing both guards away from the stairs and allowing Scott to sneak past them.
* ThisIsUnforgivable:[[spoiler:This is her feelings toward Scott in every ending she is alive in. If he is alive, she shoots him. If he died, she spits on his grave.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: In the ending, [[spoiler:"A Mother's Revenge", where she murders the Origami Killer personally]].
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: It's not entirely clear what kind of accent her actress was going for, but she couldn't pull it off.
* YouMustBeCold: Scott can give her his coat to wear after the incident at Manfred's.

[[folder:Lt. Carter Blake]]
[[caption-width-right:154:"You think you can do a better job than me with your psychology degree and your great glasses?"]]

* AxCrazy: Despite being a cop, he is comically psychotic and bloodthirsty.
* BeardOfEvil: His beard is one of his more distinctive features on his face.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: [[spoiler:In the ending "Uploaded," he ends up stealing Jayden's ARI glasses following his death; on his first use of them, he's confronted by a vision of Jayden wearing a PsychoticSmirk, implying that Blake is going to suffer just as badly as Jayden did- if not worse.]]
* {{Expy}}: Looks like [[Film/{{Narc}} Henry Oak]], who also has a similar RabidCop personality.
* GoodIsBoring: He thinks so. Good thing he isn't.
* GoodIsNotNice: Or at least he thinks he's good.
* GreenEyedMonster: A major motivation for him is jealousy towards Jayden.
* HateSink: Everything he does draws the ire of anyone good.
* InspectorJavert: He absolutely refuses to believe that anyone but Ethan could be the Origami Killer.
* InspectorLestrade: A particularly antagonistic and unhelpful variant to Jayden's Holmes.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's one of the most unpleasant characters in the game despite not being a villain.
** JerkassHasAPoint: Has his moments. He calls out Jayden if he's being too soft on not killing Nathaniel even though his life is on the line, and how the entire police force is entirely happy if the suspect being claimed to be the Origami Killer is innocent or not.
* KarmaHoudini: The worst you can to do to him is get him to retire, but this requires you to first have Ethan [[spoiler:get shot by the police]].
* KnightTemplar: He is out to get the Origami Killer no matter who he wrongly persecutes.
* LackOfEmpathy: Almost to everyone except Captain Perry, Ash, Grace, and Scott.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:Killing Ethan while Jayden is alive results in Blake getting suspended]].
* ObliviouslyEvil: His actions complicate the plot and he has a temper that causes him to punch or shoot all the wrong people.
* PetTheDog: Has his moments depending on how the player does in various situations. He saves Jayden from Korda if the player fails the QTEs, and respects Jayden's belief of never wanting to get used to killing if he shoots [[spoiler:Nathaniel]].
* PoliceAreUseless: [[CowboyCop Believes his methods of skirting around the law help him to get things done]]. [[DeconstructedTrope They really just make him a shitty cop]].
* PoliceBrutality: He always prefers to violently rough up people without any thought of getting any info out of them.
* RabidCop: To an almost comical degree. Blake's disregard for standard police procedure hinder the case. He'll go so far as to kill an innocent man because he thinks he's the killer.
* [[RedOniBlueOni Red Oni]]: To Jayden's blue.
* SmugSmiler: He smiles just to lay on his pretentiousness.
* SmugSnake: He super-confident in what he does and doesn't care if he breaks the rules.
* TheSociopath: If him being a violent cop wasn't enough, he also shows no sense of remorse over his acts of PoliceBrutality.
* TurnInYourBadge: [[spoiler:Allow Ethan to be killed by him and this is the result]].
* UnknownRival: Jayden doesn't acknowledge him even if he puts him at gunpoint ("Under Arrest") and removes him off the case ("Solving the Puzzle").
* VerbalTic: "''NORMAN.''"
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Not the killing type, just tells Jayden to "fuck off" as soon as he and the police think they got the answer to who the Origami Killer is.

[[folder:Captain Perry]]
[[caption-width-right:176:"Welcome to the club, Jayden."]]
* DaChief: To Jayden.
* JerkAss: He is fine with some police brutality to close a high profile case.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: He declares to the press that Ethan is the Origami Killer without getting his confession.
* PoliceAreUseless: He is unhelpful at best and condones obstruction and violence at worst.
* TheStoic: Normally unflappable even if Jayden and Blake are fighting.
** NotSoStoic: [[spoiler:When Jayden accuses Blake of being the Origami Killer]].
* TookALevelInJerkass: In "Under Arrest", when Jayden tells him about Blake beating Ethan.
* TurnInYourBadge: [[spoiler:Same goes with Blake if he kills Ethan.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:He will call out Jayden if he accuses Blake of being the Origami Killer]].

[[folder:Mr. Sheppard]]
* AbusiveParents: It's heavily implied that he beats his kids. We only see him too wasted to move.
* AlcoholicParent: He was too drunk [[spoiler:to bother to save one of his sons.]]
* TheFaceless: Only seen from behind [[spoiler:in a flashback.]]
* KarmaHoudini: Aside from [[spoiler:losing custody of his kids to foster parents]] the game doesn't bother to show him suffering any consequences for his actions.
* SocialServicesDoesNotExist: It's a minor miracle that both of his children didn't die before the game even begins, seeing as how he has no problem kicking the boys out into the pouring rain and letting them play at the local construction site by themselves.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:His son, Scott, became the Origami Killer because of his carelessness leading to his other son's death.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The last we hear of him is during [[spoiler:the flashback detailing his son's death.]]

[[folder:Nathaniel Williams]]
* RoomFullOfCrazy: His entire apartment is filled from the floor to the ceiling with religious decorations. Crosses, bibles, paintings of holy figures...
* [[ShootHimHeHasAWallet Shoot Him, He Has A Cross]]: [[spoiler:After finally being talked down by Jayden he pulls a cross on Blake at the last moment, possibly forcing Jayden to shoot him due to mistaking it for a weapon.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: If Jayden doesn't shoot him he gets arrested and is never seen again.

[[folder:Brad Silver]]
* AintTooProudToBeg: As soon as he gets cornered he turns from cocky and violent to pleading in about half a second.
* AssholeVictim: Depending on how you view him.
* AxCrazy: Father or not, he still chases Ethan around through his house firing a ''shotgun'' at him over ''marijuana'', laughing like a maniac and is eager to shoot him point blank in the face in the middle of his daughter's room.
* DirtyCoward: As soon as Ethan has the advantage to shoot him he is reduced to a begging mess.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He may be an amoral drug dealer, but he does seem to care deeply about his two daughters, Sarah and Cindy.
* FatalFamilyPhoto: If [[spoiler:Ethan shoots him.]]
* JerkAss: When he first meets Ethan he is very rude to him and then ultimately assumes that he is junkie.
* PistolWhipping: If [[spoiler:Ethan decides not to shoot him he'll instead club him with his handgun to knock him out and make his escape.]]

[[folder:The Origami Killer]]
* AffablyEvil: Once his identity is let out of the bag, he is revealed to be this. [[spoiler:Even going as far as helping the parents of whose children he murdered, and grieving over Ethan's grave in one of the endings. The true motive for his actions was to find a father willing to do anything for his son.]]
* AntagonistInMourning: [[spoiler:"Ethan's Grave", if he survives the events of the warehouse.]]
* ApologeticAttacker: Keeping in with his AffablyEvil persona, he will apologize before trying to kill [[spoiler:Ethan and Madison]] in one path.
* BigBad: Everyone is after this guy.
* BurnBabyBurn: In TheReveal, [[spoiler:Scott burns the evidence.]]
* CopKiller: If he kills Agent Jayden.
* DeathSeeker: With a bit of in-universe AlternateCharacterInterpretation. [[spoiler:If Ethan confronts Scott alone, Scott tells Ethan that he can shoot him, since he finally found a father who would risk everything to save his son. If another character confronts him or [[ForWantOfANail Ethan is not alone]], Scott will try to murder them because [[HeKnowsTooMuch they know too much]]]].
* DrivingQuestion: Who is the Origami Killer? [[spoiler:Scott Shelby.]]
* DisneyVillainDeath: [[spoiler:All but one of his death scenes has him fighting a character, and if he loses, the fighting ends with him falling to his death. Falling into a trash compactor or an aquarium.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: As par the course for his SecretTestOfCharacter.
* EvilOverlooker: [[spoiler:In the US box art for the game]]
* ForWantOfANail: In the final confrontation, if [[spoiler:Ethan]] is the one to rescue Shawn, [[spoiler:whether the killer will let him go or shoot him in the back depends on if Ethan is alone or not.]]
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler:His father was an [[AbusiveParents abusive]] [[AlcoholicParent drunk]], ultimately leaving Scott's brother to drown. Less than twenty feet away from his lawn chair. As a result, Scott grew up to become obsessed with finding a father who ''would'' do literally anything for his son - NotHyperbole.]]
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:If Ethan is the one to kill him]].
* HeKnowsTooMuch: He will try to murder cast members for this reason, particularly [[spoiler:if Madison or Norman shows up to confront him in the end]].
* KarmaHoudini: Depending on your choices, he can get away with the murderers and potentially murder some of the cast personally.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:In the "Mother's Revenge" ending, Lauren confronts Scott Shelby personally after finding out he was the Origami Killer, and murders him in the streets.]]
* KickTheDog: It's possible for him to try to [[spoiler:shoot Ethan while he's trying to rescue Shaun, [[{{Hypocrite}} even after Ethan had proved what lengths he was willing to go to in order to get Shaun back.]]]]
* KillerCop: He's a retired police lieutenant before [[spoiler:he becomes a killer in disguise of a private investigator.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:As listed in KarmicDeath above, if Shelby saves Lauren she will kill him herself if no one else can.]]
* PlotArmor: Though encountered a few times, he cannot be killed until the final confrontation. [[spoiler:This actually comes with a bit of {{Foreshadowing}}. Out of the playable characters there are two who can't be killed until the game's finale. One is Ethan who is a RedHerring, while the other is Scott Shelby, [[EvilAllAlong who actually is the Origami Killer]].]]
* SecretTestOfCharacter: [[spoiler:He pulls this on the fathers of the children he kidnaps, putting them through trials to see what lengths they will cross to save them.]]
* SerialKiller: At least eight 10-13 year old children via drowning, by the start of the game. [[spoiler:There's also Manfred, the Mooks he mows down in Kramer's mansion, Kramer himself (possibly), Lauren (possibly), Hassan (possibly), Shaun (possibly), Jayden (possibly), and Madison (possibly). He has a high body count.]]
* SociopathicSoldier: He's a former U.S. Marine, prior to becoming a child murderer.
* UnreliableNarrator: An odd case, as he isn't a narrator by any means. [[spoiler:But playing through his chapter gives almost ''no'' indications that who you're playing as is the Origami Killer, even as you're looking through his thoughts.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: He has one if anyone other than [[spoiler:Ethan]] goes to save Shaun, since it is going against his plan.
* VillainProtagonist: [[spoiler:He ''is'' one of the playable characters of the game, but this isn't revealed until the end.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: The reveal of his identity and by extension his [[FreudianExcuse backstory]] makes him this. It's [[spoiler:Scott Shelby]].
* WouldHurtAChild: He has killed almost a dozen children and has no intention of stopping any time soon.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Is the way he is all because [[spoiler:his own father was a complete bastard who regularly abused him and his brother both physically and verbally and ultimately convinced him he was worthless, and then to top it all off was forced to watch his own brother drown and said dad refused to help him. And his mom, the nice parent, apparently contracted Alzheimer's and all but lost her mind so she couldn't take care of him anymore. And now he drowns children and puts their fathers through sadistic tests all in the deluded hope that they can save them and that the kids can have fathers that are worthwhile and will always be there for them, something he never had.]]

[[folder:Dr. Adrian Baker, AKA Doctor Death]]
[[caption-width-right:194:"Did your mother ever tell you about accepting gifts from strangers?"]]
* BadassGrandpa: For a man his age, Baker shows a great deal of strength and resilience; not only is he able to knock out Madison (and another caller) with one swing of a baseball bat, but should Madison actually escape the operating table, the resulting fight shows that he's able to take quite a bit of punishment- and dish it out as well.
* TheCombatPragmatist: He throws everything within reach at Madison if she ends up fighting with him.
* DrFeelGood: His primary source of income is selling prescription medicine; Madison gets into his house by pretending to be a customer.
* DirtyOldMan: He asks Madison if she's for sale if the player asks him about the price of his medicine.
* EvilOldFolks: He is one of the oldest characters in the game and quite evil.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He puts on a good front but is rotten to the core.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:If Madison ends up fighting Baker, she finishes him off by stabbing him in the chest with the electric drill he was about to use on her at the start of her "operation."]]
* ILoveTheDead: Hinted at by the way he feels up Madison's corpse, should he succeed in killing her.
* KarmaHoudini: If you die during the fight scene with him. However, he can still be considered a Karma Houdini if you simply avoid the fight scene with him by finding what you need and getting out quickly.
* MadDoctor: Addicted to performing surgical operations; unfortunately, since he's been struck from the medical register and no longer permitted to practise officially, he's resorted to kidnapping people and dissecting them with power tools.
* ObviouslyEvil: Only an idiot would accept a drink from someone as creepy as Adrian Baker.
* SkippableBoss: Madison only has to fight him if a) she accepts his drink, or b) if she gets caught while wandering around his house.
* SlippingAMickey: When Madison enters his house, Baker offers her a drink to "take the edge off the pills." [[TooDumbToLive Actually drinking it]] sends her straight to the operating table.
* SmugSnake: He has a cool, creepy demeanor to suit a serial killer.
* ThisIsADrill: He tries to kill Madison with a drill.

[[folder:Jackson Neville, AKA Mad Jack]]
[[caption-width-right:180:"Broke my fucking nose, pig!"]]
* AcidPool: Has one hidden away in his garage, used for easy disposal of corpses.
* BaldOfEvil: No hair on his face or head and willing to try to bump off Jayden.
* TheBrute: He is very large and has an imposingly muscular frame.
* CurbStompBattle: For most of the second fight with Jack, Jayden is losing very badly. In fact [[spoiler:he only wins by accident.]]
* CopKiller: If he kills Jayden at any point during the 2 fight scenes, and claims that the skull in the acid bath belonged to a cop who was "asking too many questions."
* {{Expy}}: Probably a shout-out to the comic book ''ComicBook/TheCrow''. He's similar in appearance and identical in name to a minor thug the Crow kills in short order.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Unlike a lot of the characters in this game, Jack mainly prefers to use his fists in close combat rather than the usual barrage of improvised weaponry. [[TheBrute This is because he's so strong he doesn't]] ''[[TheBrute need]]'' [[TheBrute to use anything other than his fists to beat down a trained FBI agent.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:Should the second fight continue all the way to the end, Mad Jack is accidentally flattened by his own bulldozer.]]
* JustHitHim: While he does go after him with a pole and attempt to step on his head, Mad Jack does seem to enjoy throwing Jayden around in typical GiantMook fashion, especially in their second fight.
* KarmaHoudini: If you die during the fight scene with him, but the fact that Norman's body apparently got discovered in the end (for otherwise he would be considered missing not deceased) implies he may have been eventually found out (though this isn't confirmed, and it's possible Mad Jack would've simply left Jayden's body to be discovered drawing suspicion away from himself)
* LargeHam: Almost all of his lines are overacted.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "Mad" isn't just for show.
* NonchalantDodge: During their second battle, Jayden flings a metal box at Jack. In spite of being less than three feet away, Jack dodges it easily.
* NoSell: Just about all of Jayden's attacks are given this kind of treatment during the second battle- even if the player completes the button sequences without fail. However, the most obvious example occurs in the latter stages of the fight, when a particularly desperate Jayden throws another bit of scrap metal at close range. Jack lets it bounce off his chest.
* PunchPunchPunchUhOh: At one point, Jayden attempts to beat Jack down with the front fender of a car; not only does Jack manage to soak up every single hit without even staggering, but he finishes off by snatching the fender out of the air in mid-swing and kicking Jayden in the stomach hard enough to send him tumbling for a few feet.
** A classic version happens a little while later when Jayden attacks Jack with his bare hands; he lands at least two punches- both of which seem to hurt ''him'' more than Jack- and on the third, Jack grabs his arms and headbutts him.
* ScaryBlackMan: He is the only black antagonist in the game and he looks like he could rip Jayden apart.
* SkippableBoss: His second battle, which only happens if Jayden fails to get to a dose of triptocaine in time.
* SmugSnake: He taunts Jayden when he begins to go through a withdrawal symptom.
* TattooedCrook: A known crook and he has visible tattoos.
* TheresNoKillLikeOverkill: He does try to [[spoiler:kill Jayden with a car crusher]] after all!

[[folder:Charles Kramer]]
* AffablyEvil: In his first appearance.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:As the owner of the construction site where John Sheppard drowned, he evidently feels some degree of responsibility for the death, as he lays flowers on John's grave every year.]]
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-Zagged]]/[[SubvertedTrope subverted]] in that while he's definitely corrupt, it isn't actually connected to him being a Corporate Executive.
* {{Jerkass}}: [[spoiler:Wanting to legally protect his son?]] Gruesome, but fairly understandable. [[spoiler:Saying no one will miss the dead boy, and calling Lauren "just a whore" if she died?]] Not so much.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: [[spoiler:In regard to John Sheppard.]]
* PapaWolf: He defends his son with many trained bodyguards.
* SadisticChoice: It doesn't impact anything but an achievement, but it says something about him that [[spoiler:a choice whether or not to bring him his medication as he is having a heart attack is one]].

[[folder:Gordi Kramer]]
* JackTheRipoff: [[spoiler:Is ultimately NOT the Origami Killer.]]
* KarmaHoudini: He is the only antagonist in the game who, ''regardless'' of any decisions you make in the game, ''must'' be this.
* PsychopathicManchild: Most notably, he seems more interested in the cartoon playing on the plasma TV than the girls necking on the couch next to him.
* SarcasticConfession: Partial case in that while he's definitely lying (or at the very least taking wishful thinking to an insane degree) about [[spoiler:being the Origami Killer]], he's being perfectly honest when he says that [[spoiler:he's bored and finds killing entertaining.]]
* SmugSmiler: This is paired with his very smug way of speaking.
* SpoiledBrat: He is very wealthy, aloof and thinks he is above the law.
* VillainsOutShopping: In his only scene, he's introduced watching cartoons on a massive plasma TV set.

[[folder:Leland White, AKA The Taxidermist]]
* AxCrazy: At first looks like a calm and quiet lonely man. Once he finds out Madison is hidden in his house he takes his bowie knife and reveals the crazy murderous monster he is.
* ChainsawGood: [[spoiler:How Madison kills him if she actually fights him head-on.]]
* EvilGloating: He likes doing this a lot while he chases Madison.
* EvilLaugh: He does a pretty convincing one [[spoiler:if he manages to kill Madison.]]
* FatBastard: He is very far from a heroic build and very, very much a villain.
* FatSlob: Obvious by the stains on his shirt, and the filthy condition of his house and (urgh!) fridge.
* KnifeNut: Other than a knife being handy in taxidermy he stalks Madison with one.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: [[spoiler:White has killed at least five women, and put their taxidermied bodies on display in an upstairs room of his house. He holds regular conversations with them-- mostly about what new "friends" he's going to make for them next.]]
* LargeHam: Lots of evil laughing and toying with Madison.
* LivingDollCollector: [[spoiler:After all, he is a taxidermist with a killing streak.]]
* MonsterMisogyny: He mustn't like women in general [[spoiler:seeing that in his bathroom there is a female corpse in a blood filled bathtub while in another room there are five stuffed women. Aside from animals, no male victim is shown.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: Upon realizing that Madison is inside his house, he treats the resulting hunt for her like a game of Hide and Seek, or Hot and Cold. Also, when chasing Madison around the corridors, he can be heard delivering his hammiest impersonation of the Big Bad Wolf.
* SerialKiller: He has many victims by the time Madison investigates.
* SkippableBoss: The main objective of the level is to escape White's house alive; if actually ''fighting'' the knife-wielding psychopath doesn't appeal, then Madison can easily call the police from inside the house and wait until they arrest him, or just slip out the door without White noticing.
* TaxidermyIsCreepy: Most definitely; quite apart from the fact that the inside of White's house is filled with stuffed animal heads and carcasses, he's also [[spoiler:used his knowledge of taxidermy to preserve the bodies of his victims as dolls.]]
* VillainsOutShopping: Once he returns home, White immediately sits down in front of the TV to watch some boxing.
* YouLookFamiliar: He's voiced by the same actor as Scott Shelby.
