!!Anti-Foreigner Faction

[[folder:Kotaro Katsura]]
!!Kotaro Katsura
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/AkiraIshida (JP), Creator/IllichGuardiola (EN, movie), Emilio García (Spain)

A former comrade of Gintoki during the Joi War. Even after the Amanto take-over of Japan, Katsura continues to resist the Amanto, and has amassed a band of followers known as the ''Anti-Foreigner Faction'', which is in continuous, direct conflict with the Shinsengumi.

Although his initial methods were more violent in nature, Katsura has since come to believe that there are people important to him in Edo, and decides that he no longer wants to destroy the country. He and his faction now seek a way to bring about change without causing needless bloodshed.

Since he is a wanted man, Katsura is often seen wearing disguises (which are always completely ineffectual). Katsura sometimes works odd jobs to raise money for his terrorist activities and is often seen trying to coerce Gintoki into assisting him with his eccentric endeavors. He is always accompanied by his pet, Elizabeth, whom he cares deeply for. Gintoki often calls him "Zura," to which he will typically respond with "Not Zura, it's Katsura."
* AccidentalMisnaming: People often call him "Zura", but he always corrects them that it's "Katsura". It's later revealed in chapter 564 that "Zura", for him, is personal (as it can be read as "friend"), because he can rely on Gintoki and Takasugi as both a friend and a general, so when he declares "Katsura ja nai. Zura da!" while fighting Shoukaku, he finally embraces it.
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''otaro '''K'''atsura.
* AttractiveBentGender: Invoked as Zurako when he is forced into drag with Gintoki by Saigo.
** If Katsura had involved in Gender Bender Arc, he might become an actual Zurako.
* BadassLongRobe: Clad most of the time in a blue kimono, and fights quite effectively while wearing it.
* {{Biseinen}}: Comes with his [[Creator/AkiraIshida voice actor.]]
* BombThrowingAnarchists: At least initially. His [[CartoonBomb Cartoon Bombs]] are still indicative of his scatterbrained nature.
* BrickJoke: Katsura finally embraces being called "Zura" in the tail end of chapter 563.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: His actions and reasoning are often incredibly eccentric and strange but he's displayed a shocking amount of competence in managing to evade the Shinsengumi day-after-day. Need it be pointed out again that he fought side-by-side with Gintoki during the Joi War?
* CatchPhrase:
** "Zura ja nai, Katsura da!". Along with myriad variations such as: "I'm not Zura, I'm Captain Katsura.", "I'm not Zura, I'm Zurako", "I'm not Fruit Punch Samurai, I'm Katsura.", "I'm not Zura, I'm a pine tree.", and "It's not rap, it's Katsu-rap, ''yo''!". Episode 176 has an incomplete list of this, at the time of its airing.
** When he believed his role was taken over by Kyuubei, his new catch phrase was "I am/was on standby the entire time."
* CharacterDevelopment: Started out willing to go to any extreme to destroy everyone and everything related to the new Edo. Thanks to Gintoki and the Yorozuya, he's softened his stance and only goes against the government and Amanto and is now seen by the Shinsengumi as a ''moderate'' rebel. Doesn't mean he's not any less dangerous though. Shown really well in the final arc where he finds out that not only is Elizabeth an alien but also [[spoiler:the rightful king of an amanto kingdom]], and he still accepts him as family.
* CloudCuckooLander: He thought that Gintoki could hide from some ronin in an empty tin can, keeps Elizabeth as a partner without so much as a single question (completely ignoring the fact that it's just a guy in a costume[[note]]and when a similar-looking person switches places he doesn't notices at all[[/note]]), and fends off attackers using poisoned fried rice and curry as a weapon. Heck, when he had a Newtype reaction, he can only say completely nonsensical things!
** Here's a ''really'' extreme example: he once went out for a pleasant bicycle ride... through a safari park during the Popularity Poll arc, just because he wanted to see the animals' paws up close--while everyone that has a lower ranking than him wants to kill him.
* CosplayOtakuGirl: A RareMaleExample. He's so single-mindedly incompetent at disguising himself that it might just be something he does for fun.
-->''"He likes his pet alright, but he '''loves''' his costume"'' as Kagura put it once when he showed up in Anime/CaptainHarlock cosplay for the second time. Live on television, no less. Using Captain Katsuura as his alias.
* TheComicallySerious: Subverted because we see him doing something utterly stupid or weird more times than we see him be serious, but he remains perfectly serious during all of his appearances.
** Lampshaded during the Popularity Poll arc, where he challenges Kyubei and Tsukuyo ([[DistaffCounterpart but especially Kyubei]]) for having the same character type as him, claiming that ThereCanBeOnlyOne.
* {{Crossdresser}}: He has a crossdressing "persona" named ''Zura''ko.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: A highly capable and lethal warrior, on par with Gintoki, completely obscured by the fact that he is always seen with a giant duck by his side.
* CutenessProximity: Has a weakness for cute animals and will often be overcome with a desire to pet them.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was an orphan (he lost his parents to an illness and his grandmother followed suit not long after them) and had to learn to survive on his own with the ideal of becoming a strong "coward" samurai to be able to protect his comrades. Eventually, together with Gintoki and Takasugi, he lost a war, and, more importantly, he also lost his teacher, Shoyo. He parted ways from them shortly after Shoyo's decapitation. While he didn't end up obsessed with his death as Takasugi or with apparent apathy as Gintoki, he seemed to be on peace with that, although he became a terrorist against the Bakufu.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He may wanted to kill the Shogun, but he wouldn't do it when the Shogun was naked and had his dick out aiming at him. In fact, he insisted Kondo to protect him!
* EyepatchOfPower: Always wears one as part of his Captain Katsura disguise. His future self in the second movie also sports bandages over his eye in the same manner as Takasugi.
* FantasticRacism: Hates the amanto, and claims they are "soiling" the country simply by living there.
* {{Flanderization}}: In his first appearance, he's at least reasonably competent, dangerous, and aware of the world around him, if a bit prone to idealistic ranting. After the debut of Elizabeth, he's a silly CloudCuckooLander with the naive idealist traits turned UpToEleven. [[TropesAreNotBad He's considerably funnier this way]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Gintoki. Gintoki normally thinks of him as a bother, but they've been around each other since childhood. The flip side of that is that Katsura is extremely serious about keeping Kagura and Shinpachi safe, claiming that Gintoki wouldn't forgive him otherwise.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katsura_Kogoro Katsura Kogoro]], later known as Kido Takayoshi.
* HistoricalInJoke: A lot of his characterisation is based on his historical counterpart's nickname "Running Kogoro", as he lived a lot longer than most rebels by virtue of clever disguises and running away when he needed to. In one chapter he hides from the Shinsengumi with a ramen shopkeeper named Ikumatsu, and falls in love with her. The real-life Katsura met his ''wife'', a geisha named Ikumatsu, while in hiding from his enemies.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Just look at the exam he wrote for new anti-Bakufu terrorist's recruits...
* LetsGetDangerous: He takes after Gintoki in chapter 562.
-->'''Katsura''': Forgive me, Elizabeth. Everyone. As I am now, I have no chance of winning this fight. As a general of an organization, I cannot beat that thing. So I must go back. Not for the organization, nor my comrades. I will swing this sword for myself. As a lone samurai.
* LikesOlderWomen: Has a thing for married women and widows, according to Gintoki. There was also the incident with Ikumatsu, which Gintoki teases him for much later on in the manga.
-->'''Gintoki''': ''"Zura, might you have [=***=][=***=] with Ikumatsu?"''
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Long hair? Check. Bishonen? Check.
* LovableCoward: He ''can'' fight and as long as he is able to protect his comrades, he will run away from losing battles, as indicated by an early flashback in which he tries to persuade Gin to do the same. (See HistoricalInJoke above.)
* MasterOfDisguise: Or so he thinks. He's managed to fool the Shinsengumi at least.
* MeaningfulName: His "Zura" nickname can be read as "Friend" in Japanese. This is important during his childhood, because that way he became acknowledged by both Gintoki and Takasugi as both their general and a friend they both could truly rely on.
* NiceHat: Often disguises himself as a monk, complete with a monk's straw hat.
* PaperThinDisguise:
** Whether he dresses up as a priest, as Captain Katsura ([[Manga/{{Naruto}} Dattebayo/Believe it!]]), or as [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Katsuo]], almost nobody (excluding Gintoki & co.) ever seems to recognize him, despite baring his unaltered face in plain sight. A lot of times, he doesn't even bother going for secrecy:
-->''After accidentally stepping on a kid's toy, disguised as a priest.''
-->'''Kid''': ''"Hey, smelly priest!"''
-->'''Katsura''': ''"[[CompletelyMissingThePoint I'm not a smelly priest]], [[AccidentalMisnaming I'm Katsura]]."''
** When he's interviewed by Hanano, he's ''outraged'' with the network altering his voice, obscuring his face with a mosaic, and using an alias instead of his real name. Instead, he has them stop, using only a pair of gag glasses as a disguise, and he even takes those off just to eat some ramen.
* PocketProtector: Carries around an old school book which saves his life against Nizo.
* PutOnABus: Parodied. [[RunningGag He was on standby the entire time.]]
* RedBaron: It's probably a good idea to not take someone with the nickname "Young Noble of Terror" lightly.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Freaks out and denies having done the deed when Gintoki asks him about him and Ikumatsu.
* ShowerScene: [[FanDisservice While talking about how he sometimes likes to take a whizz in the shower.]]
* SnarkBall: Has his moments.
* TraumaticHaircut: In the Benizakura Arc. It's grown back the next time we see him.

!!!!!!Voiced by: Shinji Takamatsu, Creator/ToruFuruya (in Episodes 234 & 235) (JP), Andrew Love (EN, movie)

Katsura's right hand... [[BuffySpeak duck/penguin-costume-guy-thingy]]. Originally a present from Sakamoto, Elizabeth hangs around with Katsura, who doesn't even think twice about treating it like a dear friend (and not some person in a costume). It almost never talks, preferring to communicate with signboards (which it uses as weapons, whenever necessary).
* AmnesiacsAreInnocent: [[spoiler:Is Prince Hata's older brother with amnesia. He has left quite the trail of blood behind him]]. Still Katsura accepts him as family when he finds out and allows him stay with him.
* AuthorAvatar: It has been revealed that underneath the costume is the director, although this is obviously a gag exclusive to the anime adaptation.
* {{BFG}}: Sometimes uses a bazooka.
* CarryABigStick: His BadFuture self in the second movie wields a huge spiky mace.
* DistaffCounterpart: A Japanese counterpart of Warner Bros.' Will E. Coyote of Looney Tunes franchise. Considered both are well known using a TalkingWithSigns.
* EverythingsBetterWithPenguins: Or ducks... or whatever Elizabeth is supposed to be.
* FutureBadass: His BadFuture self in the second movie is extremely buff and fights with a huge spiky mace.
* {{Homage}}: Elizabeth seems to like dressing up as a reference to Manga/{{Golgo13}}, [[spoiler:while Eren is a complete shout out to Amuro Ray. Heck, they even pilot the same Franchise/{{Gundam}} and are voiced by the same person.]]
* PaperThinDisguise: Elizabeth's appearance already seems like a costume, but look at Elizabeth when it's running, and you'll see flippers being worn by hairy legs. More obviously, when its mouth is open, you can see either glowing eyes or a man (the director).
* LongLostRelative: [[spoiler:As mentioned in PutOnABus bellow are there many different Elizabeths doing shifts. It seems like the regular one is Prince Hata and Prince Barka's older brother Dragonia who seemingly died at [[YoungerThanTheyLook age 5]] in a war who was known for his long and huge chinko. He was saved by some renho. He later came to identify himself as one after befriending Katsura, priding himself as "Elizabeth of Earth".]]
* PutOnABus: Subverted! [[spoiler:In probably the greatest moment of trolling in the series, at the end of the Renho Arc Elizabeth/General Eren presumably leaves with the rest of the Renho forever, only for it to be revealed that General Eren was just a temp who fills in on mondays while the regular Elizabeth is away. The characters reacted much the same way as the audience.]]
* TheQuietOne: It talks once in a while (emphasis on while), but usually, it just communicates through instant signboards.
* RightfulKingReturns: [[spoiler:Is the king Oukoku wants as he's the most fit with the hugest chinko and best leader skills to boot. But gives it to his younger brothers so he can stay with Katsura]].
* TheRival: He strikes up a rivalry with the Shinsengumi's Saito Shimaru... because they have the same gimmick of talking with signboards.
* SignificantBirthDate: Shares name and birthday with UsefulNotes/ElizabethI. [[spoiler:{{Foreshadowing}} him being the {{Rightful King|Returns}} of a kingdom]].
* TalkingWithSigns: Always uses signboards to communicate. Well, except for the times he's the director...
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Katsura. [[spoiler:Whom he is willing to give up his kingdom for]].
* WeaponOfChoice: Those signboards. Well, that, or the [[{{BFG}} bazooka]].

[[folder:Tatsuma Sakamoto]]
!!Tatsuma Sakamoto
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/ShinichiroMiki (JP), Creator/ChrisAyres (EN, movie), César Díaz (Spain)

A former comrade of Gintoki during the Joi War. He is perpetually cheerful and upbeat even in the most dire of situations. Despite his goofy nature, Sakamoto is actually a successful businessman and pilot with a private, well-equipped defensive business fleet: The Kaientai. Sakamoto's goal is to use trade to improve relations and negotiations between Earth and the Amanto in order to bring about freedom in a peaceful manner.
* BadassLongcoat: Subverted most of the time, as he rarely ever does anything badass while wearing it, but it makes it all better when he ''is'' badass.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's all laughs and smiles until he's angry. And when he's angry, he's ''furious'', as shown [[spoiler:when he demands the Chidori captain to give Mutsu back after so-called capturing her, and when Katsura gets himself taken prisoner by Prince Hata in chapter 612.]]
* BlastingItOutOfTheirHands: He's a good enough shot to shoot enemy guns out of their hands.
* BringMyRedJacket: He wears a red longcoat and is prone to being physically abused and bleeding.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He may be goofy, but he's actually a quite competent businessman (when he actually does work that is). During the Renho Arc, he even gets most of the Renho to [[MookFaceTurn join their side]] by ''working out a business deal''.
* CareerEndingInjury: [[spoiler:Batou of the Harusame cut up his right hand with a beam saber during the war, leaving him with a nasty scar and a hand that can no longer properly wield a sword.]]
* ChivalrousPervert: A goofy variation of this.
* CloudCuckooLander: Sakamoto's mind is not of this world.
* CoolShades: Always wears them in the present.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Though he doesn't get much of a chance to show the 'badass', he did fight alongside Gintoki and Katsura during the Joi War and does have his moments in the present.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Despite his incessant laughter, Sakamoto actually suffered a lot from losing most of his friends during the Joi War. This is what motivated him to leave Earth and start a new life as a businessman.
* TheFool: Manages to make his way in the world with a positive outlook despite his sheer idiocy.
* GeniusDitz: A very competent businessman, but he's too busy acting like an idiot most of the time.
* TheGunslinger: Now prefers a pistol to the sword he used to wield during the Joi War. [[spoiler:Later explained by losing proper mobility in his right hand when Batou of the Harusame cut it up.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: When they were younger, he said that he was only willing to try flying because [[HoYay he knew Gin was waiting for him on the ground]]. Gin is impatient with him in the present day, but both are willing to risk their lives for the other.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Based off of [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakamoto_Ry%C5%8Dma Sakamoto Ryouma]].
* TheHyena: AHAHAHA!!
* {{Keet}}: A rare grown-up example.
* MadeASlave: In the past he was made one by the Chidori SpacePirates, which dealt in human trafficking [[spoiler:and which Mutsu was part of due to her father being its leader. Sakamoto ended up stealing the whole fleet with the help of the human slaves and Mutsu. This then turned into the Kaientai merchant fleet.]]
* OneHeadTaller: With Mutsu. So far, a non-romantic example.
* ThePollyanna: RareMaleExample. He can somehow find an optimistic explanation for waking up to being ''eaten'' by a giant dog.
--> ''"(...) Must've sweated while I was asleep too. Eh? Why's everything going red? ...Oh yeah...I was drinking tomato juice."''
--> ''"Look, there's a limit to positive thinking, okay?!"''
* RunningGag: Always refers to Gintoki as "Kintoki", which replaces the "silver" kanji with "gold" kanji. Much to Gintoki's annoyance.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: Seeing as he was the one who gave Elizabeth to [[CloudCuckooLander Katsura]] as a gift, it's probably safe to assume that these two are the ''only'' ones who operate on the same wavelength.
* TechnicalPacifist: He doesn't like pointless battles and will try anything to resolve conflicts without violence. But if you challenge him, all bets are off.
* UrbanLegendLoveLife: There's a brief mention that he can "only handle Earth women" and Mutsu implies that he may have once or twice caught an STD, but we never actually see any evidence one way or another, as all the women he hits on reject him.
* VerbalTic: Ends many of his sentences with the suffix "-o" which is an informal way of emphasizing the whole sentence.
* WideEyedIdealist: Believes there is a way to bring about peace in a non-violent manner whereas Gintoki has succumbed to indifference and both Katsura (initially) and Takasugi have resorted to terrorism to bring about change.

!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/AkenoWatanabe (JP), Creator/PepaAgudo (Spain)

Sakamoto's serious, down-to-earth second-in-command, and the real leader behind the Kaientai.

[[TheReliableOne Competent and reliable]], Tatsuma usually leaves her in charge of everything while he's away... which is 90% of the time. A RunningGag in the series is her trying to find him. [[spoiler:As we later learn, she's actually a Yato and former member of the Chidori SpacePirates.]]
* ActionGirl: It took a long time, but the arc detailing her backstory finally showed her to be one.
* ADayInTheLimelight: After more than 400 chapters since her introduction and never having been in the spotlight for long, we finally got an arc detailing who she is and where she comes from starting with chapter 477.
* BalloonBelly: In chapter 599, [[spoiler:she is a BigEater Yato, after all.]]
* BeleagueredAssistant: Played straight and subverted. While she ''is'' Sakamoto's assistant, this only applies when he's aboard his ship. When he isn't she's the one in charge.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: Dresses and speaks like a man in the present day.
* BlastingItOutOfTheirHands: Like her boss, she's a good enough shot to blast enemy guns out of their hands.
* CombatStilettos: Wore high-heeled boots into combat when she was younger.
* TheComicallySerious: She's constantly serious and composed, so any time a comedic situation involves her, it's this.
* CrazyPrepared: She had the Kaientai fleet modified into a CombiningMecha behind Sakamoto's back just in case they had to work out business deals with giant aliens, which proves useful in defeating the Renho's artificial planet.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In the anime at least, her eye color is the same as her hair.
* DeadpanSnarker: Prone to deadpan comments over somebody's antics, usually her boss.
* EmotionlessGirl: You can count on one hand the times Mutsu actually cracks a smile or lets go of her perpetual poker face.
* TheGunslinger: Carries around a pistol as her weapon, though she barely uses it. Still good enough to blast guns out of the enemy's hands though.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Mutsu is so much more competent than her boss that she's effectively the one in charge, even when Sakamoto is on board.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: [[spoiler:With Umibouzu, since he and her dad were old acquaintances.]]
* MiserAdvisor: In the anime she tricks Gintoki into getting less pay for a job--that is, finding her boss.
* NiceHat: Only takes it off when invited at somebody's home. [[spoiler:Its large size also serves to shield her from the sun, being a Yato and all.]]
* NotSoStoic: Tries to maintain a calm and serious appearance, but she occasionally flips on her boss in anger over his sheer stupidity.
* NumberTwo: Serves as Sakamoto's second-in-command, which means she practically runs the entire Kaientai most of the time.
* PirateGirl: Used to be one before Sakamoto picked her up.
* TheReliableOne: To Sakamoto. She always backs him up during his dealings and transactions or when they're fighting.
* TheStoic: Not an IceQueen though. Just serious.
* TheWomanBehindTheMan: She pretty much runs everything concerning Sakamoto's business.
* WomenAreWiser: A variation. She isn't more moral than Sakamoto. Just more realistic and practical.

[[folder:Ayame Sarutobi]]
!!Ayame Sarutobi
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/YuuKobayashi (JP), Creator/KazuyukiOkitsu (JP, male), Carli Mosier (EN, movie), Creator/CarolinaTak (Spain)

A female ninja and former member of the now disbanded Oniwabanshū nicknamed ''Sa-chan.'' She meets Gintoki when she falls through his roof during a failed mission and has since become infatuated with him, much to his chagrin. Her feelings for him seem to be encouraged, as she enjoys being put down and threatened by him, due to her blatant masochism.
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Played with. It's not her ''looks'' that Gintoki finds abhorrent, [[NoGuyWantsToBeChased it's her attitude and her perverted persona]].
* ActionGirl: Don't be fooled by her silly antics, she ''is'' a quite capable fighter when she's not otherwise distracted.
* AssassinOutclassin: Often shown failing at carrying out her assassinations due to her [[BlindWithoutEm glasses]].
* BadJobWorseUniform: She works at a "kunoichi cafe", wearing a HighlyVisibleNinja costume between assassination jobs.
* BeautyMark: It's under the corner of her eye.
* BigDamnHeroes: Shows up to save Zenzou from being killed by the Kihetai.
* BlindWithoutEm: Made even more disastrous by the fact that she's a ninja.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She's an extremely capable assassin, provided that she has her glasses and [[SingleTargetSexuality Gin]] is not in her line of sight.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Despite her wacky antics, when it's time to get serious she steps up the plate.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Purple hair and purple eyes.
* EmbarrassingNickname: "Sarutobi" means "flying monkey", and she's often called just "monkey" by people who don't like her.
* FingerlessGloves: Wears black gloves without fingers.
* {{Flanderization}}: As with Katsura, her wackiness was turned all the way up and her competence all the way down very shortly after her debut.
* FlechetteStorm: Unlike most ninja in the series, she actually prefers throwing only a few kunai at the time, but she's equally capable of throwing a huge barrage of kunai at once.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: While she ''is'' a skilled ninja, her [[InTheNameOfTheMoon poetic declarations]] and tendency to lose her glasses prove an obstacle for her jobs.
* IMeantToDoThat: Obviously the caltrop sticking out of her forehead was thrown there on purpose.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Who knew natto could be used as a weapon?
* InSeriesNickname: The aforementioned "Sa-chan", which is used more often to address her than her real name.
* InTheNameOfTheMoon: She always recites a poem about the vanity of life before completing a job.
* KnuckleCracking: Does it when she first appears, from as little as clenching her fists.
* LovableSexManiac: A RareFemaleExample. Her kinky antics are strictly PlayedForLaughs.
* MadLove: Gintoki is not interested in her and lets her know this harshly, but she gladly enjoys the poor treatment and rejection and will never stop stalking him.
* {{Meganekko}}: A pretty girl with glasses, though unless your name is Gintoki she is anything ''but'' sweet and pleasant.
* MsFanservice: Pretty much every appearance by her pushes the poor broadcasting regulations to their limits.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Most people call her by her nickname "Sacchan", making it easy to forget her real name.
* ThePeepingTom: She often hides in the Yorozuya's HQ in order to peep on naked Gintoki.
* ProfessionalKiller: She ''is'' an assassin after all. Unfortunately for her, she is seen failing at it more often than not.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Wears a long purple scarf all the time, even in combat.
* SingleTargetSexuality: All of her affections are aimed at Gintoki. The other guys she interacts with? Zenzo gets [[AssShove Ass Shoved]], Okita gets turned down for an S&M session (twice), and fellow StalkerWithACrush Kondo was nothing more than a [[TheBeard beard]] [[OperationJealousy for the one chance they got]].
* StalkerWithACrush: To Gintoki, much like how Kondo is to Otae.
* StalkingIsFunnyIfItIsFemaleAfterMale: Subverted. All of her antics are strictly PlayedForLaughs just as much as Kondo is.
* StockNinjaWeaponry: Mostly just kunai and some caltrops.
* TooKinkyToTorture: And ''how!'' Though there's plenty all throughout the series of her tied up or begging Gin to bang her or spank her (etc.) the best example has to be a later episode where Gin inexplicably switches bodies with Sadaharu. Sada-Gin then encounters Ayame and lifts his leg on her, in broad daylight, in public, and her reaction is, "YES! DO IT! DO IT NOW!" Too kinky indeed...
* VitriolicBestBuds: Hangs out a lot with Tsukuyo despite the two often bickering with each other.
* WeaponOfMassDestruction: Her glasses become these for a time when Gengai "repairs" them.
** Hattori even says "''Dude, I’m not even entirely sure if we should classify those as eyewear or '''weapons of mass destruction'''.''"
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has light purple hair.

[[folder:Zenzo Hattori]]
!!Zenzo Hattori
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/KeijiFujiwara

A skilled ninja from the Oniwabanshū, acquainted with Ayame. He used to lead the organisation, but with it being disbanded, he takes what jobs he can get. He's a big fan of ''Weekly Shonen Jump'', just like Gintoki--he and Gintoki once fought to the death over the ''Jump'' Christmas double issue (which turned to be a double issue of ''Akamaru Jump''). Despite his great skill, he's unfortunate enough to have the runs. Even more unfortunately, Ayame loves taking advantage of that fact...
* AnimalMotifs: As a ninja, he compares himself to a cat, while the samurai are dogs. Where dogs are loyal to their owners like the samurai are to their masters, cats are only loyal as long as they are fed in the same way ninjas only serve someone as long as they are paid. Of course, he's a lot more loyal to the Shogun and his friends than his personal philosophy suggests.
* AssShove: Poor guy, always getting something stuck up his ass.
* BadassBoast: Makes one when he saves Hinowa from Jiraia's mooks.
-->'''Zenzo:''' ''"I'll show you how scary a real ninja can be. Pop out your eyes and watch carefully. My moves will be over in an instant. Zenzo Hattori of the Marishiten has come to play!"''
* BadassLongcoat: As part of his more casual wear. Notable in that he wears it when he saves Hinowa from Jiraia's mooks and single-handedly takes them all down.
* BigDamnHeroes: ''"[[SarcasmMode Oh sorry about that.]] [[FlechetteStorm I dropped my kunai.]] [[DeadpanSnarker I have no idea what's going on.]] [[BrilliantButLazy I've been reading JUMP the whole time.]] [[BlatantLies I'm obviously not lending a hand here.]]"''
* BlindingBangs: His eyes are always covered by his air and never seen in the anime, though on occasion glimpsed in the manga. In recent dramatic moments, his blue eyes have shown themselves from behind the hair.
* BrilliantButLazy: Similar to Gintoki in combat skill and in obsession with Jump. What's he doing when Jiraia beats Gintoki during the two's first encounter? Laying back on top of a nearby container, reading Jump, claiming he didn't see anything and that he wouldn't get involved, albeit with good reason, citing his father's own clash with Jiraia. Later in the arc he saves Hinowa from a large group of Jiraia's mooks, taking them all down off-screen.
* ButtMonkey: Like Kondo, only with emphasis on the ''butt'' part rather than the ''monkey'' part.
* CombatPragmatist: Smoke bombs, feints and traps are tricks of the trade for a ninja.
* FakeDefector: Pretends to defect to the Kiheitai by [[spoiler:seemingly assassinating the Shogun, which was actually a fake.]]
* FlechetteStorm: Makes his grand entrance to protect Hinowa with an absurdly large amount of thrown kunai.
* InHarmsWay: A former employer of his mentions that he feels the most alive when he puts himself in danger. He also gets very excited at the prospect of fighting said former employer and his minions because Okuni had foreseen his death if he did so.
* IHaveTheHighGround: He does this a lot, including in the 9th anime opening. Probably comes with the [[{{Ninja}} territory]].
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With the clairvoyant little girl Okuni.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: His default excuse when he helps the Yorozuya, always claiming that he [[BystanderSyndrome doesn't want to get involved in any way, shape or form]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Emphasis on the "heart of gold" part. He may jab at people but he's overall one of the nicest characters of the show.
* LiteralAssKicking: Often the victim of this approach from Ayame.
* MrExposition: During the Red Spider Arc, letting the audience know just who Jiraia is and what his motives are.
* {{Ninja}}: And regarded as the closest thing to a leader among them.
* OneManArmy: Singlehandedly defeats Jiraia's large gang of mooks in the Red Spider arc.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Claims to be at least, though not always the case.
* PocketProtector: A shojo manga magazine saves his life when he protects Okuni from one of his former employers.
* ProfessionalKiller: Just like Ayame.
* PunchClockVillain: Briefly serves as an antagonist in the Go-Ninja Arc, but mainly because he just happened to have been hired by the magistrate. Though his earlier encounter with Gintoki made their confrontation in the same arc a bit... personal on Zenzo's side.
* RichIdiotWithNoDayJob: Averted. He's the scion of a very wealthy ninja family but he holds two jobs: an official one as a pizza guy (mostly a cover) and his real one as an assassin.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Like Sa-chan, he also wears a very long scarf all the time, and has no problem fighting while wearing it.
* StockNinjaWeaponry: Ninjato, kunai, smoke bombs, flashbangs, yeah he's got a pretty big and typical ninja arsenal.
* StraightMan: He's even played straight man to ''Shinpachi''.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: He and Gintoki often comment on how similar they are in tastes and personality.
* VolleyingInsults: Mostly with Gintoki, whenever a JUMP issue is involved.

[[folder: Zenzo's Father]]
!!Zenzo's Father
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/TomomichiNishimura

Zenzo's father, who died shortly before actually setting foot in the series -- though what appears to be his ghost sticks around for a moment to play kick-the-chan with Yorozuya. He was the previous leader of the Oniwabanshū, having retired after getting his leg injured while protecting the former Shogun. After retiring, he settled down to teach the next generation of Oniwabanshū; including Ayame Sarutobi and his own son Zenzo.
* AdultChild: He had a quite childish fascination with the game kick-the-can.
* BodyDouble: Acted as one for former Shogun Sadasada, knowing that Jiraia would try to assassinate him.
* CareerEndingInjury: Jiraia injured his legs to such a degree he could no longer work as a ninja.
* DirtyOldMan: According to Zenzo, he sold all of his Jump magazines to buy a lot of porn [=DVDs=].
* DualWielding: Wielded two short swords in his confrontation with Jiraia.
* HandicappedBadass: Despite his leg injury forcing him into retirement, he was still a quite capable ninja.
* {{Ninja}}: As the leader of the Oniwabanshu, he was a skilled ninja in his own right.
* NoNameGiven: We never hear his actual name; the most we know for sure is that his family name is Hattori.
* PosthumousCharacter: Apart from the one instance of his apparent ghost appearing to play kick-the-can with the Yorozuya, he's mostly explored through other characters and in flashbacks.
* RetiredBadass: Retired at the time of his death, but seemingly still quite skilled.
* ReverseGrip: Held two short swords reversed in his hands when he faced Jiraia.

[[folder: Kaoru Waki]]
!!Kaoru Waki
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/SatomiArai

A fellow member of the disbanded Oniwabanshū, and an acquaintance of both Sa-chan and Zenzo. She works as part of the [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Shinobi 5]], a group of ninjas led by Zenzo which clashes with the Yorozuya at one point. Her daytime job is at a flower shop.
* ActionGirl: She can handle herself just as well as Sa-chan.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: She throws roses as kunai.
* {{Ninja}}: Trained as a ninja alongside Zenzo and Sa-chan.
* PetalPower: One of her ninja techniques spreads out rose petals that paralyzes her foes.
* PunchClockVillain: Like Zenzo, the main reason she fights Sa-chan and the Yorozuya in her first appearance is because she was hired by the magister that "kidnapped" Elizabeth.
* SomethingAboutARose: Carries around a rose, and even uses them as weapons.

!!Yagyu Clan

[[folder:Kyubei Yagyu]]
!!Kyubei Yagyu
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/FumikoOrikasa (JP), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (EN, movie)

An aristocrat who was brought up as a male in order to succeed their family's clan. They dress and behave like a boy due to their upbringing, and while they go through a great deal of conflict regarding their gender, they eventually decide they're "neither a man or a woman." They were close friends with Tae Shimura as children, and lost their left eye protecting her when they were young. The incident also left them with the determination to become stronger and improve their skills.
* ActionGirl: They're able to give Hijikata a run for his money while simultaneously taking down several Shinsengumi members. In ''one'' blow.
* AmbiguousGenderIdentity: For a long time, the series wasn't particularly clear on how Kyubei personally saw their gender; on one hand there were episodes where Kyubei tried to get in touch with their feminine side after having lived their entire life as a male--sometimes discreetly pleased and sometimes uncomfortable -- while on the other several episodes threw in the mention that Kyubei still, after their introduction arc, had interest in "becoming a man." Their angst and confusion over their identity and feelings for Tae became the catalyst for the GenderSwap Arc, in which they decided "I am neither a man nor a woman," and wherein Gintoki followed that even if they continued to waver on the subject "That's fine, isn't it?"
* AmbiguousGender: Played with, the TimeSkip arc had them identify as female, dress very feminine, hit on Shinpachi, and [[spoiler:have surgery done to have a [[GagPenis dick]] to make it even more confusing]].
* AttractiveBentGender: In the GenderBender Arc, though they don't change much except for getting taller and having a spiky ponytail. In the arc they eventually express they're "neither a man or a woman."
* BadassLongcoat: Wears a long and stylish white samurai's coat to go with their badassery.
* BiTheWay: Very in love with Otae, in later arcs shows attraction to women in general, and might also have some feelings for Gintoki.
* {{Bokukko}}: Whenever they identify as female.
* BoyishShortHair: Kyubei's BadFuture self in the second movie has cut their hair really short, which gave them a masculine look.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: With ''Tae''! They work everything out after Kyubei's first arc, though they continue to pine after her.
* CleansUpNicely: Dresses rather stellar all the time, whether in masculine or, a few times, feminine clothing.
* TheComicallySerious: Prone to acting silly while remaining completely serious. Katsura regards this as a character overlap between them and wants them to change their character archetype.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: After losing to the Yorozuya, they come around to befriending them.
* EyepatchOfPower: Wears an eyepatch to cover their lost left eye.
* FailureKnight: Failing to save Tae and Shinpachi from their {{Evil Debt Collector}}s and losing their eye in the process is what motivated them to get strong enough to protect Tae.
* ForcefulKiss: Gives one to Tae after asking her to uphold her end of [[ChildhoodMarriagePromise their promise]].
* {{Gayngst}}: Kyubei is in love with Otae, but believes they can't be with her as a woman.
* GenderFlip: Of UsefulNotes/YagyuJubei, no less.
* HatesBeingTouched: Not so much hate being touched in general as being touched by ''men''. They've got nothing against men per se, but they'll hurl any guy who tries to touch them. Even if that guy's the ''Shogun''!
* HeirClubForMen: The head of the Yagyu family is traditionally always male. This is part of the reason Kyuubei was raised as a man.
* HeirToTheDojo: The successor to the Yagyu clan.
* NiceHat: Wears a large straw hat that obscures their face when they first appears, though it's never seen again after that.
* {{Ojou}}: As the heir to a rich family of celebrities, they command a great deal of respect.
* RaisedAsTheOppositeGender: Kyubei was raised as a man to ensure that the Yagyu Clan would have a male heir. To say it causes some trouble for them would put it mildly. They also uses "boku" as [[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns pronoun]] due to how they were raised.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In their first arc they gives several to Shinpachi, pointing out how he is so weak that he has to rely on and hide behind others, such as his sister, and that because of it he is unable to let her go and be herself. They pretty much takes it all back after their defeat.
* {{Sarashi}}: Wears a sarashi in the anime's 7th ending, which features the majority of the male characters [[ShirtlessScene shirtless]].
* SugarAndIcePersonality: They're calm and controlled on the outside, but they really are a sweet person on the inside.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Katsura considers them his due to both of them being TheComicallySerious.
* {{Tomboy}}: A result of their upbringing. They speak and acts like a man, and eventually decide they're "neither a man or a woman."
* TomboyishPonytail: Their usual hairstyle.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Part of their male-oriented cultivation, though they mainly thinks of themself as "neither man or woman."

[[folder:Koshinori Yagyu]]
!!Koshinori Yagyu
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/TakayaKuroda

Kyubei's father, a man of very short stature who is very obsessed with maintaining his clan's image as celebrities. He tries to implore the rest of the family to live up to their celibrity status, usually to no avail. His wife died after giving birth to Kyubei and in order to protect Kyubei's status in the clan, he refused to take another wife. He thus decided to raise them as a boy instead in order to succeed the clan and keep their place in the family.
* TheNapoleon: Short and easily agitated.
* ThePatriarch: He's not the actual head of the clan, but he's effectively in charge of the family.
* SkunkStripe: As seen by his picture, while he's mostly dark-haired, he has a stripe of white in the middle.
* SlaveToPR: He puts a lot of effort into maintaining the clan's image as celebrities and even keeps a Persian cat despite hating and being allergic to them. The rest of the family doesn't seem to care.

[[folder:Binbokusai Yagyu]]
!!Binbokusai Yagyu
!!!!!!Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta

Kyubei's grandfather and the current head of the Yagyu Clan, though he seems to leave the actual leading of the clan to his son Koshinori. He is a man of short stature but great skill, considered one of the greatest swordsmen in the history of the clan.
* BadassGrandpa: Old and short, but still quite capable of matching blades with the likes of Gintoki.
* BadassMustache: Not particularly impressive, but it counts.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: He has a large trash collection and willingly eats Tae's food.
* CoolOldGuy: He's pretty reasonable in comparison to his son.
* GracefulLoser: Admits his defeat after Shinpachi shatters his plate, getting Koshinori to call off his guards.
* MasterSwordsman: Kyubei calls him the best swordsman in the history of the Yagyu Clan.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: He's absolutely tiny, though according to Kyubei, people in their family tend to just be very short.
* OldMaster: Easily capable of throwing down with the youngsters.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: For a man of his size, he's quite strong.

[[folder:Ayumu Tojo]]
!!Ayumu Tojo
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/KojiYusa (JP), Blake Shepard (EN, movie)

A steadfast servant of the Yagyu Clan who personally looks after Kyubei. He is extremely dedicated to the point of obsession in his concern for his young master's well-being. He goes to great lengths to ensure that no misfortune ever befalls her, much to her annoyance. In return, Kyubei is usually indifferent to Tojo's excessive attention, although they've stated on one occasion that they have never liked him from the beginning and never shies away from responding with physical abuse.

His obsession with making Kyubei happy is most pronounced when he repeatedly tries to force them to wear gothic lolita outfits, claiming they suit them perfectly. Despite his radical approach to caring for his master, he genuinely has the best of intentions for both Kyubei and the Yagyu family. He is generally calm and composed in both appearance and mannerisms although he easily becomes agitated whenever anything concerning his master is brought up.
* BattleButler: As he is a part of the Yagyu clan and has been entrusted with the safety of its successor, he is a highly skilled combatant.
* BerserkButton: Ah, he sure loves eating his raw egg yolk on his rice... but when the yolk breaks...
* ButtMonkey: Past his first arc, he's never treated with any respect, being the subject of much physical and verbal abuse.
* CheshireCatGrin: Combine this with his [[Creator/KojiYusa voice actor]] and this should remind you of [[Manga/{{Bleach}} someone]]...
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Because of all his antics, it's very easy to forget he's actually a skilled warrior and one of the Yagyu school's top students.
* {{Expy}}: Possibly of [[Manga/RanmaOneHalf Mousse]], BadassLonghair, one almost never see their eyes, [[TheThingThatWouldNotLeave doesn't leave when asked to]], and is an annoyance for the one they have a crush on.
* EyesAlwaysShut: A part of his perpetually calm demeanor, he always keeps his eyes closed. The few times he opens them show he has green eyes.
* FanDisservice: The less is said about his crossdressing incident, the better.
* IncompatibleOrientation: With Kyubei, who's clearly in love with Tae and uninterested in men.
* {{Keigo}}: He generally speaks in a very polite manner, using ''masu'' and ''desu'' instead of the short dictionary forms usually employed in normal male-speech.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He has an obsession with beating a raw, unbroken egg yolk on his rice for meals and has been shown to [[BerserkButton fly into a rage]] if the yolk breaks.

[[folder:Jugem Jugem]]
!!Jugem Jugem
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/RyokoShiraishi

Initially the pet monkey of the Shogun's cousin Morimori, Jugem caused too much trouble at the palace. He was as such given to the Yagyu Clan to train. Koshinori entrusted the monkey to Kyubei, who quickly bonded with the monkey. Due to Kyubei taking suggestions for his name from the Yorozuya and Tae, and mixing them all together, he ends up with an OverlyLongName, which can be seen further below.
* DungFu: Constantly throws poop at Gintoki and Tojo. Kyubei uses it for training by wearing a mask of Gintoki's face.
* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys: Or worse, in the case of Gintoki and Tojo. Good in the case of Kyubei.
* NamedAfterSomeoneFamous: Named after [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jugemu Jugemu of legend]]
* OverlyLongName: Okay, here goes... ** He even holds the [[UpToEleven record]] of the longest anime name of all time.

!!Kagura's Family

!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/ShowHayami

The father of Kagura and Kamui, he's another of the last members of the Yato Clan. He travels the galaxy as a famous alien hunter. Like all Yato, he fights using an umbrella. He is one of the few characters able to overpower Kagura. He first appears when aliens go berserk in Edo, and he uses the opportunity to take Kagura away with him, despite her desire to stay with the Yorozuya. He relents after fighting an especially powerful alien off together with Gintoki.

He's appeared rarely afterwards, first via a letter, warning Kagura about Sadaharu, and then via his own [[ADayInTheSpotlight day in the spotlight]]. He appears again after Gintoki defeats Hosen, warning him about Kamui, who now wants to fight Gintoki himself.
* ActionDad: A lot easier to pull off when you're from the Yato clan, yet he's undeniably a badass dad.
* ADayInTheSpotlight: He gets an episode where he helps liberate a planet from its rampant environmental computer. [[spoiler:It's really a hair growth shampoo commercial.]]
* AllEncompassingMantle: The long cape he wears is big enough to cover most of his body.
* AmazonChaser: Fell for his future wife Kouka while fighting off giant monsters with her and chased her despite all his instincts telling him how dangerous she was.
* AnArmAndALeg:
** Loses his left arm from being attacked by his son Kamui [[spoiler:when it was in possession of an Altana crystal needed to prolong Kouka's life.]]
** He also [[spoiler:loses his right arm after Utsuro resurrects himself and yanks his sword out of Umibouzu's body.]]
* ArtificialLimbs: It's hidden underneath a glove and a long sleeve, but his left arm's actually a prosthetic. [[spoiler:After Utsuro rips off his original arm as well as his prosthetic, he later gains two new ones that fires ''rockets''!]]
* BadassCape: Always wears a long cape.
* BadassFamily: The Yato are a race of badasses, but his family is a stand-out case.
* BadassMustache: Some of the only real hair he has left.
* BaldOfAwesome: Not that he likes being bald...
* BloodKnight: Shades of it, in that it's heavily implied he works as an alien hunter not just to distance himself from his family (out of fear of accidentally killing Kagura), but also because he genuinely enjoys seeking out dangerous aliens for him to hunt. Hosen also implies that he was definitely one in his youth.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: He tries to justify his leaving (see below), but realizes that, for the most part, he was just being a coward. However, he feels no remorse over Kamui whom he considers a "disgraceful idiot".
* DisappearedDad: He is Kagura and Kamui's DisappearedDad. He left Kagura with her dying mother after an incident with Kamui, where Kamui tried to kill him, and Umibouzu tried the same in retaliation. The only thing stopping him from doing so was Kagura. He left, afraid that Kagura might one day turn on him too, and that he would kill his own daughter.
* DodgyToupee: He insists otherwise, but everyone can see it. However, hair or no hair, he is undoubtedly a badass.
* DysfunctionalFamily: He blames himself for the current state of his family.
* EnemyMine: He temporarily allies with [[spoiler:Utsuro and the Harusame]] solely to get to Kamui, but quickly turns on them again when they try to get involved.
* GogglesDoNothing: He wears a pair of goggles, [[CaptainObvious probably to protect his eyes on desert planets]].
* HairTodayGoneTomorrow: Used to have long hair when he was younger, and started to use a braid before his onset of baldness. Kouka was already referring him as "baldy", then.
* HandicappedBadass: Not at all impaired by the fact his left arm is actually a prosthetic.
* HealingFactor: As a Yato Clan member he presumably has this.
* IWasQuiteALooker: He was wildly handsome and manly in his younger days. He also had a large mane of black hair, which Kouka started to braid once they started a family together.
* LightningBruiser: Being a Yato, he has strength, speed and endurance to match.
* MeaningfulName: Umibouzu is a legendary creature who lives in the ocean, characterized for having a big, bald head.
* OneManArmy: Umibouzu was the only one among the Yato to stand up to Hosen and challenge his rule, taking on all of his minions alone before proceeding to fight with Hosen for three days straight. He also single-handedly mops the floor with several Harusame divisions.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: For a long time he was only known as Umibouzu, but his real name is later revealed to be Kanko. Both Kagura and Kamui's names also contain the kanji for god (kami, 神).
* OverprotectiveDad: Cares deeply for Kagura, to the point where he tried to take her away from the Yorozuya (rather, away from the planet). [[note]]At least he doesn't try to shoot Kagura's friends, unlike Matsudaira...[[/note]]
* PapaWolf: Don't hurt Kagura. Don't even let Kagura get hurt in front of him.
--> (in a letter to Kagura) ''If anything happens, all you need to do is send me a letter. I'll go over there and kill everybody.''
* ParasolOfPain: WeaponOfChoice of all Yato.
* ParentsAsPeople: Tragically distant from his family, but he still loves and cares about Kagura.
* SuperStrength: Umibouzu is considered one of the strongest characters of the entire series. And ''that'' is mostly because he is one of the most powerful Yato.

See [[Characters/GintamaHarusame Harusame]]

Kagura and Kamui's mother, Kouka was a strong and beautiful yato. Like her other family members would she often hide her feelings behind sweet smiles.
* ActionGirl: As one of the strongest Yato in the series, she was capable of handling even giant monsters with ease.
* AnimeChineseGirl: A parody like her daughter.
* BraidsOfAction: Ties her hair up in a long braid.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She was rather cold and emotionless until she met Umibouzu and became a mother.
* EmotionlessGirl: Tries to appear to be one, but isn't very good at it.
* HairDecorations: Wore a single bun at the back of her head.
* IdiotHair: Which she passed on to Kamui.
* IllGirl: Most of her appearances feature her sick and lying in bed. [[spoiler:The reason behind her disease turns out to be because she is absent from the Yato homeworld's Altana, which kept her immortal.]]
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: The first signs of her disease is her coughing up blood, which falls on the [[BloodSplatteredInnocents newborn Kagura]].
* MissingMom: Kagura and Kamui's dead mother.
* TheNicknamer: Calls Umibouzu "baldy" long before he even got bald.
* NoSocialSkills: From living without anyone else to talk to for a long time.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died before the series began and is only explored through flashbacks and comments by her family.
* SmokingIsCool: Smokes with a kiseru pipe like Takasugi and Tsukuyo does.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She appears cold and emotionless, but through her relationship with Umibouzu and their children we see her warmer side.
* SuperStrength: She's even stronger than Umibouzu, who's usually considered to be the strongest Yato alongside Hosen.

!!People of Gintoki's past

[[folder:Shoyo Yoshida]]
!!Shoyo Yoshida
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/KoichiYamadera (JP), David Wald (EN, movie)

The swordmaster who taught Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi everything they know. He was unjustly accused of trying to raise an army and executed by the government, in return for saving his students' lives.
* TheAtoner: It is implied that he had a bloody past, which he tries to atone for by teaching children in the countryside. [[spoiler:Later confirmed when it's revealed he was [[SplitPersonality one of many Utsuro's countless selves]], the leader of Naraku.]]
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He's strong enough to knock people straight down into the ground with a simple tap to the head.
* DecapitationPresentation: Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi learned of his execution when they received his head. [[spoiler:Except not, ''Gintoki'' was the one forced to kill him. They just left the head behind for the three of them to look at afterwards.]]
* DisappearedDad: He's effectively the closest thing to a father Gintoki's ever had and died before the start of the series.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: While his death isn't immediately afterwards, last he's seen alive he allows himself to be taken by the Naraku while making his promise to Gintoki. [[spoiler:When his time of death actually comes, he accepts it willingly to ensure his three students survive.]]
* TheFaceless: His eyes aren't shown until a flashback in the Courtesan of a Nation Arc, which showed him to look either like a long haired and gentle version of Sougo, or a white haired version of Katsura.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Had his moment in abandoning his past as one of many Utsuro's selves and changed to become a better person as a way to supress and resist his immortal identity in all possible means. This lasted until a grown up Gintoki was forced to execute him, which led him to come back to life as Utsuro again when the Naraku tried to burn his corpse.]]
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Loosely based on the historical [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshida_Shoin Yoshida Shoin]].
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Long-haired? Check. Boyish good looks? Check.
* TheMentor: Considering how he taught Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi everything they know about the path of bushido and the amount of respect those three ''still'' have for him in return, Shoyo-sensei definitely qualifies despite appearing only in brief flashbacks.
* OffWithHisHead: The Bakufu ordered him executed and had his head cut off. The person who did said deed? [[spoiler:''Gintoki'', by way of a SadisticChoice to kill either his own teacher or his friends. This later led to Shoyo coming back to life as Utsuro again after being burned on a pyre.]]
* PerpetualSmiler: Has a cheerful smile constantly plastered on his face.
* PosthumousCharacter: He's dead in the present time of the series, but we learn of him through flashbacks and accounts from other characters.
* SadisticChoice: [[spoiler:Gintoki was forced to choose between executing his master or allowing Katsura and Takasugi to die.]]

[[folder:Tasuke Kurokono]]
!!Tasuke Kurokono
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/KenshoOno

The phantom fifth man of Gintoki's comrades during the Joi War. A team player and supporter, he was so forgettable that even his friends forgot about him during the war. In fact, they even forgot he was in the temple they lured the Bakufu into and blew up (they were playing kick the can and he was counting). Remembering this event, they begin fearing Kurokono has returned to take his revenge on them at a reunion party he supposedly invited them to. When it proves to be a plot from the Kiheitai to take out Takasugi's former comrades, Kurokono himself shows up to stop them, proving the phantom fifth man is real and alive.
* BigDamnHeroes: Shows up to save Katsura and Sakamoto from the Kiheitai.
* TheFaceless: To enforce how people forget about him and can’t remember his face, his eyes are always obscured when his face is shown.
* ForgettableCharacter: Gintoki, Katsura and Sakamoto all completely forgot about him until the fake reunion planned by Henpeita. They had to go through a flashback to discover that he might actually have died. Not that he did anyway.
* TheGenericGuy: Apparently seen as so generic and helpful that people forget about him completely.
* {{Homage}}: He is a complete ShoutOut to ''Manga/KurokoNoBasuke''. Not only is his name in Japanese order Kurokono Tasuke, he has Kuroko's [[Creator/KenshoOno voice actor]], is referred to as the phantom fifth man, and has a special talent for avoiding attention.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Despite being pretty good in his own right, he is completely overshadowed by the feats of his friends. He is pretty content with helping them out from the shadows though.

[[folder:Asaemon Ikeda]]
!!Asaemon Ikeda
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/MarinaInoue

A rogue member of the Ikeda Clan, which comprise a long line of sword testers and executioners for the Bakufu. She is on the run for supposedly murdering the clan's former head, who had previously adopted her. She grew up and bonded with her adoptive brother, who would eventually take on the position as the clan’s head and the name Yaemon. It's quickly revealed that the former head had aided a number of criminals to escape because he believed them to be innocent. The matter was handled within the clan, allowing him to commit {{seppuku}} with Asaemon as his assistant.
* AbusiveParents: Her real father was a DirtyCoward who hit her and tried to sell her to the Hitotsubashi in exchange for his own life.
* AchillesHeel: The Ikeda style of swordsmanship is mainly used for the sake of quick and painless executions. While it's [[MasterSwordsman very effective in combat]], the style has a critical weakness in that the user is left open after an attack, which can be exploited by making the user waste their attack.
* ActionGirl: She's an excellent master of the sword.
* TheAtoner: Wishes to atone for having to kill her adopted father.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Yaemon's Cain.
* CoolMask: Shaped like a skull, as Asaemon is seen as a "God of Death".
* DarkIsNotEvil: She's an executioner wearing black clothes along with a creepy skull mask, but has a kind heart.
* EtTuBrute: Towards her brother Yaemon when she finds out he sold her and Gintoki out to the Hitotsubashi.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Her left sock is much longer than her right, and she wears an armwarmer on her left arm.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: She met Gintoki when she was a child when he appeared before the Hitotsubashi in an attempt to get them to spare the people her father sold out, including herself.
* HappilyAdopted: By the former head of the Ikeda Clan, though it didn't [[{{Seppuku}} end]] [[OffWithHisHead happily]].
* IaijutsuPractitioner: Her style of swordsmanship involves quickly drawing, slashing and then sheathing the sword again in the blink of an eye.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Most swordsmen in the series get some improbable feats, but she and her brother Yaemon take it to another level with the special techniques of the Ikeda Clan, which allows them to cut things in a way so they either stay attached or can be easily reattached. The primary use of the technique lies in executing criminals without letting their heads fall off, letting them die with some semblance of dignity.
* InTheHood: While she mostly keeps it down, she wears a hooded cloak.
* LegacyCharacter: [[spoiler:Invoked, Yaemon hands over his name and leadership of the Ikeda Clan to Asaemon, as it is tradition for every head of the clan to bear the name.]]
* ThatManIsDead: [[spoiler:Declares Asaemon to be dead after taking on the name Yaemon and leadership of the Ikeda Clan. To symbolize this she cuts her skull mask in half.]]
%%* ZettaiRyouiki: [[FashionableAsymmetry One leg only]].

!!Planet Oukoku
[[folder:Prince Hata]]
!!Prince Hata
!!!!!!Voiced by: Kouichi Sakaguchi (JP), Andrew Love (EN, movie)

An Amanto prince that regularly visits Edo. He likes collecting unique and dangerous animal/alien species and when there is a MonsterOfTheWeek episode, he's usually the one at fault.

He really has little idea of how repulsive the rest of the characters find him.
* AccidentalMisnaming: It's Prince Hata, not Prince Baka (Idiot Prince).
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: He's purple.
* AuthorityInNameOnly: Up until chapter 613, we didn't know anything about his planet or his kingdom, or why he had a "prince" title. He is from planet Oukoku, and he holds to the title of "prince" because, although he took control of his country, he only had the "looks" (a big "chinko") but not the capability to lead it. [[spoiler:He originally considered that he would be able to rule it alongside his older brother, prince Barkas, since his capability to lead was superior (but his "chinko" was smaller), as they didn't have the equal talents of their oldest brother, [[PosthumousCharacter Draconia]]]].
* ButtMonkey: Anytime he appears, he ends up humiliated or beaten up in some manner.
* CatchPhrase: [[GratuitousEnglish LOVE AND PEACE]]. With accompanying hand motions.
* TheChewToy: His sole reason for being in the series was to be humiliated, beaten up and chewed on. [[spoiler:That seems to be changing in the Final arc.]]
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: While he was initially a recurring ButtMonkey, he later stopped making appearances in the manga. The anime has him make a brief appearance in episode 252, but that was about it. He later reappears hundreds of chapters later during the Final arc.
* DullSurprise: His "acting" while dubbing over Takasugi and the other characters in the anime. All of it, really.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The foolish to Barkas' responsible.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Prince Hata self-admits that he loves every single breathing thing in the universe (the more stranger, the better)... except ''humans''.
* {{Gonk}}: Just take look at him. He is old, fat, and he is losing hair...
* IWasQuiteTheLooker: [[spoiler:He was very [[{{Bishonen}} beautiful]] in his youth, though he became more of a {{gonk}} as his years of glory (and innocence) were left behind.]]
* NoRespectGuy: Despite his supposed authority, nobody takes him seriously. Not even ''Jii'', his loyal servant.

!!!!!!Voiced by: Toshitaka Hirano

Prince Hata's not particularly loyal and brave butler -- while he's quite eager to please the prince, he will not hesitate to throw him under a bus to save his own life.
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: He's green.
* ButtMonkey: Like his boss, he ends up humiliated or beaten in some way. Probably one of many reasons he ''cannot'' stand him.

* DirtyCoward: Will gladly offer up the prince to save his own hide.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's rude and constantly insults everybody, including the prince.

!!Onmyoji and Shikigami

[[folder:Ana Ketsuno]]
!!Ana Ketsuno
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/SayakaNarita

A reporter and weather forecaster for Oedo News, well-known and loved for her cheerful disposition. It isn't elaborated until later, but she uses fortune telling in both her weather and horoscope predictions, which are always very accurate. It's mentioned in the series that she gets married, and that she later gets divorced. The latter is the focus of the Onmyoji arc. Gintoki has a crush on her.

Her real name is Crystal.
* ArrangedMarriage: To Doman, as part of a peace agreement between the Shirino Clan and Ketsuno Clan. Seimei got her to divorce Doman when he noticed how sad she was.
* ButNotTooForeign: According to Sorachi, the reason her real name is Crystal is because one of her parents was a foreigner.
* ChekhovsGunman: You probably don't remember that whole thing about her getting married...
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She names her dog [[OverlyLongName Last of the Mohicans Night of the Living Dead McGuffin]].
* DissonantSerenity: Her Black Horoscopes.
--> Today you die! Today your lucky color is red. So let's hide that blood-covered body with something red!
* LetsGetDangerous: Previously thought to be little more than a cutesy weather reporter, but when a shikigami comes crashing into Gintoki's house she reveals herself to be a rather badass onmyoji and destroys it.
* TheOjou: A nice, humble one.
* {{Onmyodo}}: What she actually uses to predict the weather with.
* PerpetualSmiler: Always smiling and seemingly happy.
* SummonMagic: As an [[{{Onmyodo}} onmyoji]] she has a shikigami under her command that she is able to summon at will. Hers is the sadistic CuteBruiser Gedomaru.
* UnfortunateName: Ketsuno Ana = "ketsu no ana" = [[VulgarHumor asshole]].

[[folder:Seimei Ketsuno]]
!!Seimei Ketsuno
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/HikaruMidorikawa

The young head of the Ketsuno Clan and also Ana Ketsuno's big brother. A very talented onmyoji, who is regarded as one of the most powerful in history. He works for the Bakufu as the lead guardian of Edo, which means he has shikigami scattered all over town to gather information. He processes this information and delivers it to the Bakufu. He used to be friends with Doman despite their clan's rivalry, but their relationship soured as Doman became obsessed with defeating Seimei and having his clan surpass Seimei's. Despite this, he still seeks to end the centuries long rivalry between the two clans.
* TheAce: An immensely talented and super powerful onmyoji, well respected and looked up by almost everyone that knows him.
* BareHandedBladeBlock: Blocks a shikigami's sword with a single hand after releasing his full power.
* ButNotTooForeign: Like with his sister, one of their parents was a foreigner. The reason he has a Japanese name while she doesn't is because the head of the clan always takes on the name Seimei.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abe_no_Seimei Abe no Seimei]] probably. According to legend Abe no Seimei wasn't fully human, which fits with the Seimei not being fully Japanese in an odd way.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: His power is normally limited due to all the shikigami he has stationed around Edo, but in his fight with Doman he recalls every single shikigami to focus his power and utterly curb stomp him.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Tries it on Doman when Antenmaru takes over his body.
* {{Onmyodo}}: The most powerful onmyoji in the series.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Extremely powerful when he calls upon his full power.
* PlayingWithFire: Countering Doman's boast of incinerating him with "an infinite number of flames", Seimei conjures 1562 flaming wards against Doman's measly 103 wards.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue oni to Doman's red oni, which is even reflected in the color of their spells.
* SinisterSurveillance: Strangely heroic example. He has shikigami stationed around the city to act as his eyes and relays the information they gather to the Bakufu.
* TheStoic: Calm and composed, except for when his sister is on tv.
* StraightMan: With Shinpachi briefly loses the role due to being forced into a Shikigami's costume, Seimei takes over the role by making exaggerated reactions to everybody's antics.
* SummonMagic: Able to call upon ''a lot'' of shikigami, though he generally only uses them to non-violent ends.

[[folder:Doman Shirino]]
!!Doman Shirino
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/KenNarita

Head of the Shirino Clan and a rival of Seimei. Although the two started out as friends despite the struggle between their clans, Doman was pressured by his father into trying to defeat Seimei and surpass his clan. He eventually became bitter after the years of humiliation he suffered in trying to defeat Seimei and his hatred of his former friend has since then grown. However, he still agreed to a peace treaty between the two clans on a single condition: That he marry Seimei's sister and his long-time crush Ana Ketsuno. Following their divorce, Doman seeks to exact his revenge on both Seimei and his sister.
* ArcVillain: Of the Onmyoji Arc.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: An onmyoji variant, being overconfident in the superiority of his magic and eager to trample on his opponent's.
* AssShove: A frequent victim of butt-related abuse, with Gintoki smashing him down several times on Gedomaru's club. Not helping the problem, he also has hemorrhoids like Zenzo.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: Gets turned into a demonic giant when Antenmaru fully takes over his body.
* ButtMonkey: Despite being the villain of the arc, he is treated with little in the way of respect and suffers a lot of physical abuse, especially to his ass.
* DemonicPossession: His body is possessed by Antenmaru, an evil spirit long since thought to be vanquished.
* DisneyDeath: He initially appears to die when Antenmaru is defeated, only for him to show up alive and well after the end of the arc, with no reason provided. The characters are also surprised about it.
* EvilFormerFriend: He and Seimei were once close friends, but their clans' opposition to each other soured their relationship.
* FightingFromTheInside: Holds back Antenmaru after he takes over his body, allowing Gintoki to defeat him.
* HeelFaceTurn: Reforms at the end of the Onmyoji arc.
* HeroicSacrifice: Subverted in that he actually survives.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Probably Abe no Seimei's rival Ashiya Doman.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He's certainly not bad on the eyes and has long hair to match.
* {{Onmyodo}}: He's actually a pretty decent onmyoji but compared to Seimei he just can't measure up.
* PeekABangs: His hair covers his left eye.
* PlayingWithFire: Summons 103 flaming wards and boasts of incinerating Seimei with an infinite number of flames. Too bad for him Seimei summons almost 15 times that number of wards.
* PowerTattoo: Gedomaru takes the tattoo on his face as a sign he's been dabbling in forbidden magic. In truth, he's actually freed Antenmaru and let his spirit into his body in order to increase his power.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red oni to Seimei's blue oni, which is even reflected in the color of their spells.
* TheRival: Seimei's.
* SquishyWizard: Invoked when he fights Gintoki and Gedomaru, who make it a key part of their strategy to brutally attack him before he can use his magic. He manages to get out of it with an illusion, but not before being thoroughly humiliated.
* StalkerWithACrush: For Ana Ketsuno.
* WeatherManipulation: Changes the weather through magic to contradict Ana Ketsuno's weather forecasts.

!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/AyakoKawasumi

A shikigami, bound in service to Ana Ketsuno. Originally an evil spirit, she was caught long ago by onmyoji when she was tearing up Mount Oe during the Heian period. Cold and relentless, Gedoumaru will do anything to beat her opponent and is not above putting up an act just to get her opponents to lower their guard.
* ActionGirl: She lays quite the smack down with that mace.
* CarryABigStick: She wields a giant tetsubo, a studded club used in Japanese warfare.
* CombatPragmatist: She will act out a highly dramatic scenario where she's mourning her mother to get her enemies to drop their guard, allowing her to go in for an easy kill. Her teamwork with Gintoki also consists of them physically humiliating Doman before he can use his magic.
* CuteBruiser: She might be small and looks cute, but she packs hell of a punch with that mace.
* EmptyEyes: Likely due to her shikigami nature.
* HornedHumanoid: Tiny little horns at that.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: An evil spirit turned into a shikigami by onmyoji.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: One of the shortest characters in the series, but also one of the physically strongest. She takes down huge shikigami several times her own size in her first appearance.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: She's still an evil spirit after all.
* TheStoic: She has a mostly cold demeanor about her.
* UndyingLoyalty: She's genuinely loyal to Ana Ketsuno, who treats her like a friend.
* WeaponAcrossTheShoulder: She often carries her mace over the shoulder.

He eventually took over the brother from which the Shirino clan is descended, after he had killed his brother, but was sealed away again by the other brother's son.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: When he assumes direct control of Doman's body, he turns into a demonic giant.
* BreathWeapon: Shoots beams out of his mouth.
* DemonicPossession: Pulled it on the brother from which the Shirino clan is descended. And also takes over Doman's body with it.
* HornedHumanoid: When taking over Doman's body, he sprouts horns from the top of his head.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: One of the most powerful evil spirits.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Right htere in his character image.

* SealedEvilInACan: He was sealed away through the efforts of the ancestors of the Ketsuno and Shirino Clans. In the present day, Doman breaks his seal and brings him into his body.
* WeatherManipulation: Calls forth huge storms with his very presence.

Son of the late Kantaro Hashida and his lover Ofusa. His grandfather Kahei attempted to kidnap him from his mother to raise him as his heir in place of his late son, however Ofusa fled with Kanshichiro, leaving him at the Yorozuya to shake off her pursuers. Due to looking like him, everybody initially assumes him to be Gintoki’s bastard son.
* BadassAndBaby: The baby to Gintoki's badass during his arc.
* DoorstopBaby: Fusa left him in front of Otose’s Snack Shop in order to shake off her pursuers. He even provides the page image!
* IsThatCuteKidYours: The cause of it for Gintoki, looking just like him despite the two not being related.

Kanshichiro’s mother. A servant hired by Kahei Hashida to take care of his sick son Kantaro. However, the two fell in love and fled to live together. Unfortunately, Kantaro’s condition worsened and he ended up dying. As a result, Kahei set his eyes on their newborn son Kanshichiro as his new heir, leading Ofusa to flee and leave him at Otose’s Snack Shop.

* EvilOldFolks: Though he is revealed to be not as evil at the end, mostly misguided and extreme in his actions to secure his family line and company.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Keeps his eyes shut most of the time, making him look more affable and friendly. He opens his eyes whenever he acts in a more sinister manner.
* HeelFaceTurn: Redeems himself at the end of the arc and hands back Kanshichiro to his mother after realizing where he went wrong.
* KarmaHoudini: While a lower scale antagonist, he's probably the biggest example in the series, getting absolutely no recompense for his actions. Instead he gets exactly what he wanted (Kanshichiro as his heir) with the only cost to himself being accepting Ofusa as Kanshichiro’s mother.
* WouldHitAGirl: Though he doesn’t do it himself, he has his men beat up Fusa and orders them [[EyeScream take out one of her eyes]], which was thankfully interrupted.

!!!!!!Voiced by: Gara Takashima

The ruler of the mythical Ryugujo.

* EvilOldFolks: She used to be a kind ruler, but she's grown bitter and hateful in her old age.
* GreenEyedMonster: Envious of people who are younger than herself and have retained their beauty, and unable to find a way to keep herself young, she unleashes a gas on people to age them all up to be older and uglier than herself.

!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/TetsuShiratori

A turtle from Ryugujo. Once a captain of the guard, Kamenashi defected and rebelled against Otohime to stop her plans.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Is very insistent that the skeleton in his cave is really just his wife; she's just thin and tired after giving birth.
* CoolShades: Has a pair of sunglasses that look pretty cool. Too bad the rest of him doesn't.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Once a high-ranking member of the guard, but decided to defect to stop Otohime's plans, being labelled a rebel in the process.
* NerdGlasses: The glasses he normally wear aren't particularly flattering when combined with his face and his receding hairline.
* StatOVision: Has a "Spouzer" (totally not a [[Manga/DragonBall Scouter]]), which he uses to measure the PowerLevels of the group, so they can split their battle power evenly. In true ''Manga/DragonBall'' fashion, it ends up exploding.
* TurtlePower: Supposedly a humanoid turtle, but he and the other Ryugujo inhabitants look more like humans wearing turtle shells.

* TalkingWithSigns: Established it as a rule among the Renho and employs it himself. Of course, when he begins speaking for real, he drops it.
* VaderBreath: Comes with being a parody of Darth Vader.

* LoveableSexManiac: Extremely perverted and shows off all the time.

* PeoplePuppets: Controls Gaimon's slain minions as a puppet army against the Yato and a decoy for her own ninjas.
* PuppetFighter: Fights using the puppet in the wheelchair she carts around. Said puppet is multi-purpose, armed with cannons and blades, but also quite capable of making tea or serving as a toilet.
* ReverseMole: Pretends to ally with Gaimon and the Kiheitai in order to [[spoiler:smuggle the shogun away to safety]], before betraying them.
* TheStoic: She's calm and reserved, with little deviation in facial expression.
* SwissArmyWeapon: Her puppet can be turned into and used as a WaveMotionGun, a FuumaShuriken, a drink dispenser... '''''and a toilet?!!'''''
* VariableLengthChain: Chains are among her puppet's arsenal, which she uses to catch and restrain her foes. When her puppet is in FuumaShuriken mode, she swings it around with the chain.
* WaveMotionGun: The puppet that she poses as herself has one built into it, which she blasts Gaimon with.
* WeaponAcrossTheShoulder: Rests her [[FuumaShuriken puppet-turned-shuriken]] across her right shoulder, despite the blades previously being sharp enough to cut several Yato in half.

* BladeOnAStick: A flashback shows his favored weapon to be a spear.

* FourStarBadass: An admiral who is quite capable of throwing it down with the best of them in a fight.

When he discovers that [[spoiler:the Tendoshu has essentially been killed off]], he still resumes the Liberation Army's efforts, feeling that he and the soldiers can't go back empty-handed without obtaining some form of revenge.
* TragicKeepsake: He keeps a picture of his now-dead wife in his locket.
* WarHawk: Enshou takes over the Liberation Army's operation on Earth to continue waging war against them, seeing that after [[spoiler:the Tendoshu were discovered to have become a bunch of living corpses]], they cannot afford to go back empty-handed.

Leader of the Dakini forces hired by the Altana Liberation Army.
* BadassBeard: His rough unkempt beard adds to both his age and badassery.
* BadassBoast: Boasts of the strength of both himself and his Dakini warriors.
-->'''Ougai:''' We are the Dakini! The warriors feared as the 'Demolishing Tanks'!
* BadassCape: Wears a long flowing cape draped over his left arm.
* BadassGrandpa: Ougai is an old but fierce Dakini warrior, easily capable of tearing through Edo's defenders by himself.
* BloodKnight: Ougai lives for the glory of the battlefield and is excited when the Altana Liberation Army's machines are disabled, declaring that they can go back to the good old days of war, before having the best technology determined who would win.
* CarryABigStick: Fitting the oni motifs of the Dakini, Ougai carries a huge club dotted with iron knobs, similar to the Japanese [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanab%C5%8D kanabo.]]
* CatchAndReturn: The defenders of Kabukicho throw huge boulders at him and his forces, only for him and the Dakini to simply catch them and throw them back.
* EliteMooks: His Dakini warriors are all very strong and prove a formidable challenge even to named characters.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a nasty scar running down his dead left eye, which combined with his demonic appearance doesn't make him look particularly heroic.
* HornedHumanoid: Like all Dakini, Ougai has horns on his head. Unlike most of the Dakini he has three of them, with one horn poking out of his forehead and the left horn broken off.
* TheJuggernaut: Referring to the Dakini as the 'Demolishing Tanks' is no idle boast, as Ougai and his warriors smash their way through Kabukicho's defenses to get to the cannon that disabled their technology. He smashes open Kabukicho's gate in one blow and throws back the boulders they launched with catapults with his own hands. Even lowering parts of the street fail to stop their advance, as the Dakini simply smash apart the surroundings to create makeshift bridges.
* MadeOfIron: Ougai has toughness to match his strength. He takes several hits from Kyubei and the Yorozuya, crashes from a tall building when the stairs fall apart, survives getting buried under dozens of wooden logs, breaks apart the log that Gintoki tries to smash down on his head with just a headbutt, and finally survives a huge barrage of kunai from Tsukuyo and the Hyakka. When Gintoki finally seems to have ended the fight by bashing a kunai through one of his horns and into his forehead, he gets back up shortly after with the kunai broken.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: Catches Tojo's sword between his teeth and then breaks the blade when he bites down on it.
* OneHandedZweihander: Owing to his SuperStrength, Ougai swings his enormous club effortlessly with one hand.
* OneManArmy: He's significantly stronger than a standard Dakini warrior and can take down multiple soldiers at once with a swing of his weapon.
* RousingSpeech: When the Altana Liberation Army's ground forces are in disarray after all their technology is disabled by Gengai, Ougai rallies them with a speech and personally leads them towards Kabukicho.
* RuggedScar: A long scar runs down his dead left eye, instantly marking him as an experienced warrior.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Ougai is a proud Dakini warrior who longs for the days where war wasn't exclusively fought and won with new technology. To him the field of battle is a sacred ceremony for men to bet their pride and their lives.
* SuperStrength: Strong enough to smash through the iron gate protecting Kabukicho in one blow. He is also capable of catching huge boulders thrown by catapults mid-air and throw them back.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: After seemingly being defeated, Ougai reveals he is still alive by throwing his massive club at Kyubei from behind, causing severe injuries and knocking them out of the fight.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Takes command of the Altana Liberation Army's forces in Edo when all their technology is disabled and communication with their commanders is cut off.

Leader of the Shinra forces hired by Altana Liberation Army.
* BadassCape: Wears a long white cloak that partially covers his body and hides his weapon.
* IHaveYourWife: Soutatsu and his Shinra warriors sneak inside Kabukicho during the fight with Ougai, capturing Tae and the other women who have been throwing logs at the Dakini from the rooftops. In exchange for not killing them, Soutatsu demands that they produce the one who disabled their technology. Then Otose shows up with Gengai, pointing out he did it...
* {{Ninja}}: The Shinra are Amanto that essentially work as ninjas. While Ougai and his Dakini warriors brute-force their way through Kabukicho, Soutatsu and his Shinra sneak inside to analyse the weapon that disabled their technology, before taking hostages to find the one who made it.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Soutatsu has no interest in honor or the cause of his employers, only the money he and his warriors will be paid with.
* PointyEars: As a Shinra, Soutatsu has pointy ears like an elf.

[[folder:Tsu Terakado]]
!!Tsu Terakado
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/MikakoTakahashi

A popular IdolSinger popularly called Otsu, who's sung multiple hit singles with surprisingly foul lyrics ("Where the hell is your mother from?"). When she started her singing career on the streets, Shinpachi was the first to cheer her on, and he's continued doing so as the leader of her fan club ever since.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Since she rarely appears in the manga, not even colored pages, the cover of volume 51 suggests she is a brunette in the manga.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Her brain must be somewhere up there to mash up those song titles.
* TheDitz: Sweet, naive, pretty weird ideas.
* IdolSinger: A parody of the stereotypical idol singers, with hit singles such as "Where the hell is your mother from?!" and "Oh, if you don't shape up right now, I'm gonna tear that mole right off!"
* InSeriesNickname: She is mostly known by her fans as "Otsu".
* LadySwearsalot: So they have to censor her songs. It's unknown if it's a joke or that they generally shouldn't broadcast it in real life or print it.
* PerpetualSmiler: Probably as part of her image, she's always seen happy and smiling.
* VerbalTic: She's fond of making words out of the last character of each sentence.
* WordSaladLyrics: Her lyrics are all a random assembly of threats and insults.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has purple hair in the anime.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears long socks that reach up to below her short skirt.

[[folder:Mitsuba Okita]]
!!Mitsuba Okita
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/SumiShimamoto (JP), Creator/ShelleyCaleneBlack (EN, movie)

Sogo's older sister, who raised him after their parents died. She and Hijikata fell in love with each other, but Hijikata rejected her because he believed his dangerous lifestyle would end up leaving her alone and unhappy.
* BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce: She puts tabasco on everything and will gladly force others to eat it too.
* TheGadfly: She might not be sadistic like Sougo, but she also enjoys trolling others. For example, forcing Gintoki to eat a tabasco covered parfait by pretending to spit out blood when he refuses. After he eats it and [[FireBreathingDiner spits out fire]], she reveals to be an act.
* TheHeart: Of the Shinsengumi.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Her historical counterpart is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okita_Mitsu Okita Mitsu]], who was also Okita Souji's sister. Historically however it was Souji (Sougo) who died from tuberculosis, not her.
* IllGirl: Suffers from a disease that keeps her bedridden most of the time.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: She often coughs up blood whenever put into stressful situations.
* PeacefulInDeath: She eventually dies peacefully with her beloved younger brother at her side.
* PromotionToParent: Had to raise Sogo when their parents died. He's as a result completely devoted to her.
* SiblingYinYang: She is as considerate and gentle as Sougo is unkind and obnoxious.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Fell in love with Hijikata who didn't dare to love her back, even though he did.
* SoProudOfYou: Tells Sogo this with her last breath.
* SoapOperaDisease: Averted, they directly state it's tuberculosis, which is why it's such a huge deal that she escaped from hospital.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Tabasco and spicy food.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Kind-hearted and loved by all, she inevitably ends up dying in the hospital.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Kind-hearted, devoted and loyal to a fault.

!!No. 502 / Ryuzan Hayashi
!!!!!!Voiced by: Creator/HiroshiKamiya

The last android built by Professor Ryuzan Hayashi, who also built Tama, before his death. He initially works under Professor Meguro after Ryuzan’s death, but quickly betrays him to fulfill his own plans. It is quickly revealed that Ryuzan transferred his personality data and memories over to this android, essentially making him the Professor.
* ArcVillain: Of the Fuyo arc.
* ArtificialHuman: The last of Professor Hayashi's androids.
* BadassLongcoat: Sports a red one after betraying [[BigBadWannabe Meguro]].
* TheDragon: Initially looks to be Professor Meguro's right-hand man, but very quickly takes over the ArcVillain role after betraying him.
* FakingTheDead: Meguro thought he had killed Ryuzan, but he had already transferred himself into his new android body. He simply got up after the attempt and then used the news of his death to his advantage.
* FromASingleCell: A variation. He claims that as long as his central processor is intact his body will repair itself and that said processor is tinier than a single micron. Gintoki gets through this by shoving him in the way of the beam of energy under the Terminal.
* HealingFactor: His body will always repair itself so long as his central processor is safe.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Sort of. As a human Ryuzan Hayashi was desperate to avoid loneliness, causing him to create androids as company for both himself and his sick daughter. Unfortunately he ended up killing her when he tried to transfer her personality data over into Tama.
* KickTheDog: Similar to how the defective androids were recalled and then crushed, he orders the employees of the Hayashi Research Institute to be crushed to death.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: Screams out for Tama to not leave him before he is completely destroyed by the energy under the Terminal.
* TheStarscream: Betrays his apparent master Meguro and takes over in his stead.
* TheStoic: He is calm and shows little in the way of emotions, which is more than justified by being an android.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Initially wears a black waistcoat over a white shirt and later adds a red longcoat on top of it after betraying his master.

With the Chidori now a broken shadow of its former strength, the Captain seeks revenge against the people that stole his fleet and ruined his ambitions.
* TheChewToy: He's constantly puked on, injured, and treated with virtually no respect from anybody but his crew.

[[folder:Kozo Etekichi]]
!!Kozo Etekichi

A famous thief, known for stealing from criminal organisations and exposing their crimes, while the money is used to buy bananas to the poor. While he had seemingly retired for a while, he returns for a time in order to find a successor and sets his eyes on Kondo.

As it turns out, the two already share history: The famous thief was once the chief priest of a shrine dedicated to the monkey god Sarugami. For a time, Kondo attended the temple school where he taught, going from a troublemaker and a thief to a diligent and kind boy. The shrine was burned down in an incident with loan sharks and since then, Kondo never returned and the chief priest turned into the thief Kozo Etekichi.
* AnimalMotifs: Definitely monkeys. His given name as a thief (Etekichi Kozou) can be translated as "Lucky Monkey Boy", he’s the chief priest of a shrine dedicated to a monkey god, and he hands out bananas to the poor.
* CoolOldGuy: He might be too old for it, but he still goes out of his way to expose the real criminals and gives out food to the poor.
* GoOutWithASmile: Dies with a proud smile, while holding hands with his student Kondo.
* JustLikeRobinHood: Takes the money he steals from criminals and buys bananas, which he then distributes to the poor.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: Kondo's old teacher who appropriately ends up dying while sharing a heartfelt moment with his student.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: His real name is unknown as he is only referred to as "Etekichi Kozou", which is a nickname meaning "Lucky Monkey Boy".
* StealthClothes: Appropriately for a thief in the setting, he wears a handkerchief over his head which is tied under his nose. Surprisingly for the trope, he’s actually competent.
