There aren't as many {{Kaiju}} in this series of films as ''Franchise/{{Godzilla}}'', but they are [[OurMonstersAreWeird certainly memorable]], so let's learn about them. The main page is [[Franchise/{{Gamera}} here.]]

[[caption-width-right:320:Guardian of the Universe]]

A gargantuan tusked turtle-like monster, Gamera has had different origins depending on which era he is involved in. In the original Showa Era, he has some absent connection to Atlantis, but not much in the way of details is presented; he is simply one of many monsters who roams the world and is frequently lured to do battle with other monsters. In the Heisei Era, he is a bio-engineered SuperSoldier created by Atlantis after previous misuse of the same technology produced the horrors known as Gyaos, given life for the purpose of slaying Gyaos and surviving through the eons to ensure they are exterminated.
* AlternateCompanyEquivalent: Odd as it may sound, Gamera is to arch-rival Franchise/{{Godzilla}} as SpiderMan is to {{Superman}}; yes, he's powerful, but not ''all'' powerful, and his enemies are usually stronger. This forces him to fight with smarts as much as claws, and to learn from his mistakes (Usually this comes after he's on the losing end of a [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown brutal ass-beating]] by the MonsterOfTheWeek).
* {{Atlantis}}: Gamera's origin in all continuities, though it's not gone into much detail in the Showa Series.
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: In the Showa era, he could spin through space without much harm coming to himself.
** The Heisei era version of him can too, though it's only shown in one shot alongside the Super Gyaos in the first movie.
* BigBad: Was actually the main villain of [[Film/GiantMonsterGamera the first movie]], as the sole kaiju rampaging.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Has spikes on his elbows but they aren't used much.
* BreathWeapon: In the Showa era, he pretty much has flamethrower breath. In the Heisei era, he shoots fireballs.
* CombinedEnergyAttack / KamehameHadouken: His Mana beam from the Heisei era.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: His mode of transportation.
* {{Expy}}: The Heisei's incarnation may possibly (perhaps unintentionally) be one of Godzilla1994 before it was [[ExecutiveMeddling scrapped and replaced with the much disliked 1998 result]]. Both the scrapped 1994 Godzilla and Heisei Gamera were created by ancient civilisations to combat a greater menace.
* FriendToAllChildren: The TropeNamer
* GeniusBruiser
* GlassCannon: Discounting the original film (Then at his most obviously indebted to Godzilla, he's nigh-impervious), Gamera is amongst the most fragile of Kaiju; even ''light arms fire'' does him some damage (Admittedly not much, but considering Godzilla shrugs off an A-Bomb...). He does have a healing factor, but it's quite slow.
* GoodIsNotNice: In the final film in the Heisei trilogy. He's so determined to destroy the Gyaos, he kills and injures 15,000 - 20,000 citizens in the Shibuya ward.
* GreenEyes
* HealingFactor: Has one, but much slower than most.
** HealItWithFire: Can absorb fire in order to repair his injuries, and in his first film, it was stated that nuclear weapons would only empower him.
* SeaMonster: Dwells in the sea a lot, and is based on a mutated turtle.
* TakingYouWithMe: His "Fireball Ejection Suicide" attack.
* TurtlePower: Giant, heroic, mana-powerd turtle!
* TookALevelInBadass: The Heisei Era Gamera to the Showa one.
* UnderdogsNeverLose: Unlike [[ImplacableMan Implacable]] [[TheJuggernaut Juggernaut]] Franchise/{{Godzilla}}, Gamera is not all-powerful, and is in fact quite vulnerable for a Kaiju -- crucially, moreso than most of his RoguesGallery. This forces him to fight with his wits.

[[caption-width-right:288:Guardian of the Universe Jr.]]
* BadassAdorable: Fights against Zedus even when the cards are stacked against him.
* BreathWeapon: Has only flamethrower breathe at first but upon eating the red rock thing, he uses a fireball as a finisher against Zedus.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: Can do this when young but is incapable in monster form until eating the red rock thing.
* GreenEyes: Strangely, his eyes were black until he grew to monster size.
* HeroicSacrifice: Toru persuades him to not pull this in order to defeat Zedus.
* PlotRelevantAgeUp: In the space of a week, Toto grows from a cute hand-sized turtle to a cute house-sized turtle.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter
* StockSoundEffects: In stark contrast with his father's screech, his entire vocal library is made of generic monster roars and growls, most of which come from ''Film/KingKong1976''.
* TurtlePower

[[caption-width-right:346:TASTE THE RAINBOW MOTHERFUCKAA-!]]

A massive, crocodile/chameleon-like kaiju of little intelligence but considerable destructive power, the first enemy monster battled by Gamera in the Showa era.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: A diamond was used to lure Barugon into a lake but he just snapped it up with his tongue instead.
* AwesomeButImpractical: His rainbow attack as he learned the hard way.
* EverythingsBetterWithRainbows: Can shoot a rainbow beam out of his back for long distance attacks!
* KillItWithIce: Can shoot ice out of its OverlyLongTongue. Even froze Gamera in place for some of the movie!
* KillItWithWater: He's drowned by Gamera
* MeaningfulName
* NeverSmileAtACrocodile: Bears a strong resemblance to a crocodile, albeit with some chameleon-like features such as the horns and tongue.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Probably the closest thing the series has to a dragon, anyway.
* OverlyLongTongue
* SuperDrowningSkills: Cannot swim and the military and Gamera uses this to their advantage.

[[caption-width-right:325:I appeared in more films than you did!]]

Most iconic of Gamera's foes, Gyaos are blood-sucking pteranodon-like kaiju with laser beams. They first appeared in the third Gamera film of the Showa era and were later revealed to have spacefaring relatives. In the Heisei era, they were presented as the arc-villains of the trilogy, having been accidentally created by the people of Atlantis and then gone amuck, necessitating the creation of Gamera to destroy them.
* ArchEnemy: To Gamera. At least in the Heisei series.
* BatOutOfHell: The Showa era incarnation is a sort of giant bat. The Heisei era are referred to being giant birds, despite still retaining bat-like features.
* BreakoutVillain: Appeared in more than one Showa film, which led to their revival in the Heisei era and further cemented their iconic image. They even cameo in Gamera The Brave!
* GiantFlyer:
* HealingFactor: The Showa one was able to regenerate, and regrew his severed foot.
* ImAHumanitarian: In the Showa era, Gyaos ate humans and livestock for their blood. In the Heisei era, he eats them because his old food source, pollution, was depleted when Atlantis thrived.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Their cuttings beams are actually super sonic screams.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A giant vampire-pterodactyl.
* OneGenderRace: In the Heisei series, reproducing asexually.
* TookALevelInBadass: Became the most frequent monster in the Heisei series.
* VampireBitesSuck: In the Showa era, the bites suck since you could be killed by a single chomp.
* WeakenedByTheLight: The Showa version doesn't like the sun, and in fact would die if exposed to the ultraviolet rays for too long. The Heisei ones also preferred night at first but after growing protective eye plates they could fly during the day without much hassle.

!Space Gyaos

[[caption-width-right:151:This is the skin of a killer FROM SPACE]]
A space-faring strain of Gyaos that appears in ''Film/GameraVsGuiron'', it is essentially a Gyaos that can fly from planet to planet under its own power.
* ApocalypseHow: Almost a Class 3. [[FridgeHorror Makes you wonder why they haven't gone after earth next]].
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: How Guiron dismembers the Space Gyaos. Its head even lives a few seconds longer beyond decapitation!
* GiantFlyer
* ImAHumanitarian: To the Terrans and probably other races and animals.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: Shiny Silver Gyaos from space that are immune to sunlight and attack planets.
* PaletteSwap: Basically the Gamera vs. Gyaos suit painted silver. But it's so shiny!
* RecycledINSPACE: Gyaos, but shiny silver and IN SPACE.
* TheSwarm: Attacked Terra offscreen and wiped out most of the inhabitants, the last two protected by Guiron.
* WeakenedByTheLight: Averted. The Space Gyaos attack the planet Terra during the day without any apparent harm. Can Presumably fly through space surviving starlight.
* TheWorfEffect: It took Gamera a whole movie to get the hang of killing Gyaos. The Space Gyaos has no sunlight weakness and is carved up by Guiron in a few minutes.

[[caption-width-right:255:Invading Squid FROM SPACE]]
* AlienInvasion: Want to colonize Earth for unknown reasons. Talk about how it's similar to their planet hint their world maybe dying.
* CombatTentacles: It fights Gamera with six of them.
* EverythingsSquishierWithCephalopods
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Can combine his three head tentacles into a razor sharp weapon to skewer opponents with.
** Meets this fate itself in one of the American comics when Gamera throws it onto the Eiffel Tower.
* SeaMonster: Can swim underwater, but from another planet.
* TheSwarm: Was originally just the leader of an invasion force with underlings using human disguises. Then those underlings combined with Viras for a {{Kaiju}} battle!

[[caption-width-right:347:Angry Guard Guillotine]]
The titular monster of ''Film/GameraVsGuiron'', this horror is a bio-engineered SuperSoldier created to protect the dying world of Terra from any and all assailants, predominantly the starfaring haemovores known as Space Gyaos.
* AngryGuardDog: Is pretty dang determined to butcher any intruders.
* AttackReflector: Reflected the Space Gyaos's beam back and cut off its foot!
* {{BFS}}: Has a Big Effing Knife for a head and he isn't afraid to use it!
* TheBladeAlwaysLandsPointyEndIn: How he meets his end.
* {{Brainwashed}}: How he's persuaded to do his guarding duties by the brain eating HumanAliens.
* EvilLaugh: When slicing up Space Gyaos.
* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: Normally walks on all fours but can stand on his hind feet.
* FuumaShuriken: Has a pair of shurikens in its head which can be launched and guided by psychokinesis.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext After having a missile explode in his head]].
* ItCanThink: Despite his brutish appearance, he's quite crafty. He set up Space Gyaos so he could render it defenseless (by cutting off a wing, no less) and chop it to pieces, and used his shuriken to prevent Gamera from flying.
* MeaningfulName: Named after the guillotine.

[[caption-width-right:297:"'re pregnant. And I'm the mother."]]
* BewareMyStingerTail: Has a deadly stinger hidden in her tail she can use to implant her offspring in other monsters.
* DisintegratorRay: Her heat ray vaporizes flesh and entire city blocks. Doesn't have the same affect on Gamera, but still damaging nonetheless.
* FemaleMonsterSurprise: Her gender is discovered when she implanted an egg in Gamera's lung. And it hatched.
* FaceFullOfAlienWingWong: Implanted an egg into Gamera's lung, stunning him. It hatched in his lung and would have probably made its insides a meal if the heroes hadn't killed it.
* HellIsThatNoise: InUniverse, her main weakness is an idol that makes a sound that's able to both weaken her and cause severe illness in humans. White noise is also discovered to be this to her. Her DisintegratorRay also opperates on this.
* MonsterIsAMommy: And she will use the nearest monster as the incubator for that egg. Gamera is free.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: InUniverse, her name is described as a Mu word meaning Devil.
* SealedEvilInACan: Was sealed away under the earth by the Devil Whistle thanks to it making a special sound which weakens her, keeping her in suspended animation.
* SuperpowerLottery: Can shoot quills that keep Gamera in place and take down jets, a massively destructive heat ray, the ability to suck opponents toward her, and impregnate opponents with her stinger tail.

[[caption-width-right:160:Invading Shark FROM SPACE]]
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: His fins act like this and are his preferential weapon.
* AlienInvasion: Wanted to enslave the humans as cattle for his race.
* {{Brainwash|ed}}: Mind controlled a captured woman to be her agent and even gave her some brainwashing powers as well.
* EvilIsHammy: Moreso in the English dub of the movie. [[ Have]] a [[ listen !]]
* [[ThreateningShark Everything Is Even Worse With Sharks]]: An alien with the resemblence of a Goblin Shark!
* ImAHumanitarian: His race eats humans. They want a fresh supply of them, so...
* TheParalyzer: The beam from the jewel-like organ above his beak can freeze an opponent in time.
* SeaMonster: Like Viras, he is FROM SPACE!

[[caption-width-right:331:THIS IS FOR CANCELING MY MOVIE!]]
* ArchEnemy: Would have been this to Gamera, as WordOfGod says she was intended to be the [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} "Ghidorah"]] of the Gamera series. That role ended up going to Gyaos (and to a lesser extent, Iris) instead.
* BreathWeapon: She could have possibly breathed fire or let out poisonous smoke.
* MonsterIsAMommy: Upon dying, two babies wriggled out and Gamera rescued them from the military, since he's the friend of monster children as well!
* MultipleHeadCase: One plan for her was to have two heads.
* PoisonousPerson: One of her proposed powers was unleash a poisonous smog.
* ReptilesAreAbhorrent

[[caption-width-right:327:Queen of the Swarm]]
* AlienInvasion: Though the conflict comes from the fact the conditions perfect for the Legion are negligable to the humans and the human technology interferes with Legion communication.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: The Queen Legion is the biggest, strongest, and smartest of the swarm.
* BeePeople: Her soldiers are this. They even seem to reside in a Honeycomb-like part of her body.
* GiantFlyer: Played straight with the soldiers, but the queen gets her wings destroyed soon after her appearance and relies on burrowing thereafter.
* HiveQueen: The Queen Legion is the brains of the smaller ones.
* IAmLegion: One of the characters quotes from the bible passage and that's the creatures' name from then on.
* NotSoStoic: Upon her horns being ripped off, she goes ballistic and starts using red energy whips!
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Upon her horns being ripped off which reveals she's NotSoStoic.
* SuperToughness: By Heisei Gamera standards. Direct hits from missiles and other conventional weapons manage to blow off some of her small shield emitting legs, but fail to do any serious damage otherwise, compared to other kaiju that take considerably more damage from the same thing.
* TunnelKing: Her ability after being dewinged.
* VillainousBreakdown: See NotSoStoic.

* AmbiguouslyEvil: [[MultipleChoicePast Multiple possible explanations]] are given for his existence, some of which imply he was actually not inherently evil and was corrupted by Ayana's hatred. While he's undoubtly a dangerous monster and the film's main villain, it's unclear if he does the things he does out of a malicious nature or simply because he thinks its what he thinks Ayana wants him to do.
* ArchEnemy: It's implied throughout the film that Iris and Gamera are natural enemies. At one point they are compared to the [[TheFourGods Chinese gods]] of the South and the North, who were rivals; and two explanations for Iris' [[MultipleChoicePast past]] say that he was either created to destroy Gamera or is a mutation of the Gyaos, whom Gamera was created to destroy.
* CombatTentacles: His shoot lasers and can be used to make him fly.
* EvilCounterpart: To Gamera. They are both giant monsters created by the Atlanteans ([[MultipleChoicePast possibly]] in Iris' case) that end up forming psychic links with human girls through the use of mystical stones.
* GiantFlyer: Flies using plasma energy, uses wing-like membranes between tentacles to increase speed.
* ManipulativeBastard: Manipulates Ayana's hatred for Gamera for a power up...maybe. The film is kinda ambiguous whether or not he manipulated her or her hatred and anger corrupted ''him''.
* MeaningfulName: His name in the kanji representation means "Evil God" or "False God."
* MultipleChoicePast: Is he an evil spirit? A monster created to stop Gamera that was corrupted by Ayana's hatred? Or a mutated Gyaos? The film never really gives a clear answer.
* SealedEvilInACan: If he was inherently evil. Was confined to the Moribe shrine where a turtle-like rock sealed it. A sumo wrestler couldn't pick it up. Ayana could.
* UltimateLifeForm: One [[MultipleChoicePast possible explanation]] for his existence is that he's the ultimate evolution of the Gyaos.
* VillainousBreakdown: When Gamera rips Ayana out of his chest, Iris pins him to a wall by his hand and is about to fry him with his own fire balls.

[[caption-width-right:319:I went out to dinner with [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} Gaira]] last night]]
* EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs: A sea monster that resembles a therapod for some reason.
* ImAHumanitarian: His recent preferred food source that kicks off the conflict.
* OverlyLongTongue: Uses it to stab Toto repeatedly.
* SeaMonster: A monster that just decided to munch on humans one day.
* TongueTrauma: Toto ''rips out his tongue''.

!Asagi Kusanagi
* TheHeart: To Gamera. He's more savage once their connection is severed.
* TheLancer: To Gamera in a way.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: She was a high schooler in the first movie. In college by the third film.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Asagi grows up to be a bit of a tomboy by the time she reunites with Nagamine in the third film.

!Inspector Osako
* ButtMonkey
* HesBack: Gamera 3.
* PluckyComicRelief:
* TookALevelInBadass: Actually kind of helpful and heroic in Gamera 3.
* WeirdnessMagnet: Can't catch a break.

!Mayumi Nagamine
* BewareTheNiceOnes: If she sees someone spouting nonsense, she won't hesitate to call them out.
* {{The Smart G|uy}}al: Bird expert.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Is a bit quieter and more reserved in the third film, while Asagi has matured into a bit of a tomboy.
* {{The Worm G|uy}}al: Bird expert brought in to study the Gyaos.

!Midori Honami
* {{The Smart G|uy}}al: Like Nagamine, but more quiet and softspoken

!Ayana Hirasaka
* EvilCounterpart: To Asagi though she's not outright evil but hurt.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Starts to regret her bond with Iris near the end of the film.
* TheQuietOne
* WeirdnessMagnet
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: She lost her parents during the battle between Gamera and the first Super Gyaos, her adopted family openly talks bad about her, she and the one part of her foster family she cares about are bullied by the neighborhood. Yeah, she's directly responsible for Iris (and depending on which choice you pic from his MultipleChoicePast, perhaps directly responsible for what he became), but the poor girl's been through hell.

!Mito Asukura
* BigBadWannabe:
* HoistByHisOwnPetard
* IJustWantToBeSpecial
* TooDumbToLive

!Tatsunari Moribe
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Ayana.
* FakeUltimateHero: Not that he really believed it but he did snap Ayana out of a trance.
