[[folder:Lightning Farron]]
!! Eclair/Claire "Lightning" Farron

->"It's not a question of can or can't. There are some things in life you just do."

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/MaayaSakamoto in Japanese and Creator/AliHillis in English.

The main character of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII''. A former Sergeant of Cocoon's Guardian Corps who resigned so she could be free to rescue her beloved sister Serah from the clutches of the Pulse fal'Cie. Her weapon is a [[SwissArmyWeapon transforming]] [[CoolGuns gun]][[CoolSword blade]] called the Blazefire Saber. Her [[SummonMagic Eidolon]] is [[http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Ff13-summon-lightningodin.png Odin]], who transforms into [[CoolHorse a horse]] during his Gestalt Mode.

She changed her name to "Lightning" after the death of her parents as part of an effort to [[CharacterDevelopment change herself]] into a [[TheAce stronger, more confident person]] capable of protecting both herself and her little sister. While her new [[TheStoic Stoic]] personality was perfect for the [[MildlyMilitary Guardian Corp]], she ended up developing a MarriedToTheJob IceQueen persona that hindered her RelationshipValues and distanced her from Serah.

The first game centers around the [[DefrostingIceQueen defrosting]] of this persona as she is forced to confront her failings as a caretaker and as a sister.

* ABirthdayNotABreak: Serah and Snow broke the news that Serah had become a l'Cie to Lightning during Lightning's birthday party. Lightning, [[CassandraTruth not believing their story]], drove Snow and Serah from the house in disdain, openly declaring it to be the "[[WorstWhateverEver worst birthday ever]]." By the time Lightning realized that Serah was telling her the truth, it was too late: the Purge of Bodhum had begun, and Serah had been taken captive by the fal'Cie that branded her.
* ActionGirl: Throughout the games she takes down countless {{Mooks}} and destroys armies, aircrafts, and trains, all with [[LadyOfWar quite some grace]].
* AntiHero: Starts as an UnscrupulousHero, very briefly dabbles in being a NominalHero after her BerserkButton is smashed into oblivion, and transitions into a PragmaticHero about halfway through when she regains her senses and undergoes CharacterDevelopment.
* AffectionateNickname: In the Japanese dialogue, Snow calls her "[[JapaneseSiblingTerminology nee-san]]" ("big sis") - as in "sister-in-law." Lightning dislikes this immensely.
* AloofBigBrother: She's very protective of Serah, but she concentrates so much on shielding her from ''physical'' harm that she neglects areas like friendliness or affection.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Lightning punches Snow three times within the first three hours of the game, venting her pent up anger and frustration towards him.
* BadassNormal: Look at the first cutscene, which is ''before'' she becomes a l'Cie. She takes on robots, monsters and Anima casually.
* BadassAdorable: A beautiful woman who [[CharacterDevelopment changed herself]] into a [[TheAce stronger, more confident person]] capable of protecting both herself and her little sister.
* BadassCape: The red cape dangling off her left shoulder is implied to ''not'' be Guardian Corps standard. Fortunately, she's fired during peaceful times that mean it's acceptable wear.
* BerserkButton:
** Do ''not'' mess around with [[BigBrotherInstinct Serah]] or [[MoralityPet Hope]], you will not get a chance to regret it.
** Betraying her isn't the best idea either.
** With Snow only, she doesn't take kindly to him calling her "Sis". Mostly because she doesn't approve of him at first (and also because it's not technically true until the wedding).
* {{BFS}}: In Gestalt mode, Lightning gets use of Odin's utterly monstrous sword Zantetsuken.
* {{Bifauxnen}}:
** Not in-game, but in a cross-promotion. She appeared in Japanese men's fashion magazine ''Arena Homme Plus'' modeling Prada's mens' summer collection.
** A few costumes in the third game put her in suits, putting this trope into full effect.
* BigSisterInstinct: For all of her faults, she's quite protective of Serah.
* BigSisterMentor: She acts as one for Hope and teaches him how to survive in the wild.
* BladeBrake: Thrown in an uncontrolled manner by a massive Behemoth? No problem for Lightning. She'll just slam her gunblade into the ground with a single arm while flipping backwards and then proceed to steady herself quickly enough to pull off a badass pose seconds later before engaging in battle.
* BrokenBird: Lightning's opinion about her moniker at the start of the game is that it reflects how destructive "Lightning" has been in regards her relationship with her sister, Serah.
* ByTheBookCop: One of the reasons she had such a problem with Snow was because she saw him as a jobless law-breaking thug.
* CharacterFocus: ''Final Fantasy XIII'' only came out at the end of 2009, but Lightning has made several appearances in other media. She's not only appeared in several spin-offs, but her outfit appears as a promotional bonus outfit for ''VideoGame/{{The 3rd Birthday}}'' and ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'', she's the leader of the new heroes in ''[[VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy]]'', and she appears in the "Long Live Play" commercials for the Playstation 3. About the only domain left is a ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' showing.
* CombatParkour: She's very acrobatic in cutscenes (back-flipping, leap-frogging over people, hopping from airship to airship during Chapter 12, etc.) as well as during combat (Army of One is full of flips and other feats and her normal combo has her backflipping while firing her gunblade).
* CoolBigSis:
** Serah's. Along with the [[BigBrotherInstinct overprotectiveness, strength, and lack of social grace]] normally given to big ''brothers.'' Heck, ''[[TheBigGuy Snow]]'' calls her "Nee-san"! (Although in his case it is a reference to her being his (future) sister-in-law.)
** To Hope, she's either this or a ParentalSubstitute.
** Sazh refers to her as 'nee-chan' once in a while, though in his case it's less straightforward. The only time he actually says it to Lightning's face is when they've just met and he doesn't know her name -- in Japan, addressing strangers as sister/aunt/grandmother depending on their age is pretty common. The rest of the time, he's talking to the others about her, which can be seen as Sazh encouraging them to think of Lightning as such.
* CoolSword: Her gunblades, which also double as a CoolGun.
* CustomUniform: Her outfit is based on the standard [[http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/9/9f/Guardian_Corps_2.jpg Guardian Corps female variant]], but with different colors, FashionableAsymmetry, and a cape. The flavor text of the outfit in ''Lightning Returns'' calls it "Acceptable wear in times of peace", implying that if she were on the front lines, she'd probably be wearing something a bit more standardized.
* CustomUniformOfSexy: Lightning's variation of the Guardian Corps uniform only has [[FashionableAsymmetry one pauldron]], is [[SleevesAreForWimps sleeveless]], has FingerlessGloves, ModestyShorts instead of pantyhose and no CommissarCap.
* DeadpanSnarker: "''Worst birthday ever.''"
* DefrostingIceQueen: At the start she spurns everyone, especially her future brother-in-law. By ch 10, she advocates TrueCompanions.
* DespairEventHorizon: Was about to cross it after Serah crystalized and Hope clung to her for help she couldn't provide, then Odin teleported to the area and [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan smacked it out of her.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Her motto for living can be boiled down to: keep moving no matter what.
* DubNameChange: Her real name, Eclair, was changed to Claire, due to the fact that an Eclair is a type of pastry over in English speaking countries.
* DualWielding: GunsAkimbo in the opening scene, and when mounted on Odin, she dual wields {{BFS}}s.
* DullSurprise: A plot point in ''Lightning Returns'' is how she doesn't feel emotions as well as she used to, but Ali Hillis certainly sounded bored before then...
* EffortlessAmazonianLift: Easily carries around the unconscious Serah at the beginning of the game, looking rather protective.
* ElementalPowers: As a Ravager she can use them, specialising in lightning magic.
* EmbarrassingTattoo: Her brand is on top of her left breast where her heart is, hidden under her shirt. You never actually get to see it until Aya Brea wears her costume in ''VideoGame/{{The 3rd Birthday}}''.
* {{Expy}}:
** [[WordOfGod Character designer Tetsuya Nomura]] stated she was created as a "female [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Cloud]]." Along with their similar facial structures and brusque initial personalities, they're both former military soldiers that have gone rogue and joined with the resistance.
** She shares the same weapon archetype and the initial aloof and cynical behavior of [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII Squall]], along with some of his jerkassery.
* FairCop: She was a Sergeant of the Guardian Corps, and is quite beautiful.
* FingerlessGloves: She wears a pair, suiting her ActionGirl status.
* FlowerMotifs: [[SomethingAboutARose Roses]] turn up a lot with her; both beautiful and thorny.
* GoodIsNotNice: While she shows a large capacity for kindness and caring, she also tends to be strict (according to Serah in XIII-2), harsh (seen with Hope as she scolds and reprimands him for showing emotion upon coming across slaughtered soldiers), and generally only hands out accolades when she feels morale is low or when someone meets her high standards. However, some of her more harsh tendencies stem from the fact that the entire world and the God-like beings that run it are out to kill her and her companions as well as the fact that she and her companions are ticking time-bombs. In this scenario, you either learn how to survive quickly or you end up dead just as fast.
* GuiltComplex: She blames herself for not being around enough for Serah and she wholeheartedly believes that she failed to raise Serah; she has some serious PartingWordsRegret over the birthday incident; in XIII-2 she blames herself for everything that has gone wrong, even though she is actively trying to protect the timeline and caused none of it to happen; the list goes on.
%%* GunsAkimbo: Pulls this off during the opening of XIII.
* GunFu: Acrobatics with with a gun.
* TheGunslinger: The woman has some ImprobableAimingSkills in cutscenes. In battle, the end of a normal combo has her shoot at the enemy. ''[[GunFu While backflipping]]''.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: The further and further you get into the narrative of "The Lightning Saga", the more and more you'll discover that it doesn't matter what she does or accomplishes, Lightning will always find a way to cast herself in a negative light or at the very least downplay the whole thing. Taken even further in Lightning Returns, when she consistently claims it's her fault Serah died in XIII-2 because she requested Serah's help. In reality, Serah made her own choice to find Lightning and stop Caius and knew that she was at risk of death because of her ability to see the future.
%%* TheLeader: Defied at first as she wanted nothing to do with the others and tried to abandon Hope. Character development makes her a Type II.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Especially during XIII-2 where [[spoiler:she deflects an entire energy based shockwave and an energy beam from a Chaos Bahumut with her sword.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills
** Fang's Eidolith: a small crystal the shape of a flower petal and the size of the whole bloom. Lightning's position: twenty meters away from Fang, who just flung said Eidolith into the sky. Party's current situation: ''falling at terminal velocity''. Shots fired: one. Dragons summoned: one.
** Even her normal combo qualifies, considering the gunshot finisher is performed amidst a backflip.
* IntimateMarks: While never shown on-screen in ''XIII'' proper, ''VideoGame/{{The 3rd Birthday}}'' allows Aya to wear Lightning's outfit (in turn, Lightning is able to don Aya's attire in ''[[VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy Dissidia 012]]''; [[ActorAllusion this is because, in Japanese, they're both voiced by]] MaayaSakamoto). ClothingDamage reveals that Lightning's l'Cie brand is located on the upper-left side of her chest, just above her breasts.
* JackOfAllStats: If fully developed, she has the second-best Strength and ties for second in Magic with Vanille. She also has the second-lowest overall HP, but learns Sentinel skills that allow her to dramatically increase her evasion to physical attacks, so she can step into any role easily.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Cold, distant, and extremely snarky to even those closest to her. However, she really does care deeply for them as she willingly joins The Purge to save Serah, is ready to sacrifice herself for Hope without a second thought, and feels so torn about Fang and Vanille's sacrifice that she immediately sets out to find a way to save them. She'll also generally try to do the right thing.
* KnightInSourArmor: She believes in doing what's right, which is not to say she's not incredibly bitter about just about ''everything.''
* LadyOfWar: Cool and collected while taking down enemies with graceful twirls and a [[CoolGun gun]][[CoolSword blade]]. The clothes she wears are relative simple, yet radiate style.
* MagicKnight: Equally skilled in sword melee and magic, and knows all four -strike moves.
* MamaBear: For Serah (the director stated Lightning has both maternal and sisterly feelings toward Serah, so it works both ways) and Hope. For Serah, she willingly volunteers to be "Purged"; proceeds to hijack a Purge train, taking out all the soldiers on board; plows through several more platoons of soldiers/monsters on her way; then proceeds to hijack a military barge to infiltrate the Pulse Vestige where she then fights off the monsters within; and then decides to take matters straight to the God-like fal'Cie ''all within the first two hours of the game''. And for Hope? [[HeroicSacrifice "Start running,]] [[YouShallNotPass I'll keep em' busy.]] You survive!". Luckily [[BigDamnHeroes Fang and Snow]] showed up just in time.
* MasterSwordsman: Episode One states that only the best get to handle Gunblades.
* MarriedToTheJob: Her dedication to the Guardian Corps is a possible reason she has no canon love interests.
* MeaningfulName: She changed her name to Lightning when her parents died to be a stronger person for Serah, but ended up alienating her and ruining their relationship. Lightning comments to Hope on this "Lightning. It flashes bright, then fades away. It can't protect. It only destroys." It is implied that Serah doesn't see it this way at all as not only does she refer to Lightning as "oneechan" in the Japanese version on a regular basis, she also hints that she saw Lightning as a role model/mentor in XIII-2 and never once gives any hint of resentment towards her elder sibling.
* TheMedic: She majors in the Medic role, but is less capable at it compared to other teammates.
* ModestyShorts: She wears black bike shorts under her miniskirts.
* MoralityPet: Serah and Hope demonstrate the heart of gold inside the jerk.
* MoreDakka: Her gunblade, which usually is seen only to fire one bullet at a time, suddenly becomes a rapid fire machine gun during the Chapter 7 airship fight. It is surprisingly effective.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Has no problem doing flips, backflips, high jumps, and impressive feats of swordplay despite possessing tiny twig limbs, even before she becomes a l'Cie.
* TheMusketeer: When she isn't deflecting energy waves, cutting through an entire security fleet, and taking on 10 ton robotic scorpions and winning with her sword, she is shooting objects that are only a few inches in diameter, at a distance of several hundred feet while falling at terminal velocity, and only takng a second to line up the shot... without sights ''while'' upside down.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Serah is not marrying anybody if she has anything to say about it, and definitely not Snow!
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Lightning!
* NiceShoes: Knee-high, elaborate boots.
* NotSoDifferent:
** During the time when Hope wanted revenge against Snow, Lightning remarks how similar he is to her.
** [[spoiler: Noel certainly thinks Serah and Lightning are not that different from each other when they are angry after seeing her switch from being stern and focused to soft-spoken very quickly.]]
* NotSoStoic: [[spoiler:Her outbursts to Snow and her demeanor just before her confrontation with Odin. She also didn't take too kindly to Cid Raines' [[BerserkButton betrayal.]]]]
* OneWomanArmy: Lampshaded; her signature skill is ''called'' Army of One. It's taken further in the sequel: [[spoiler: her LimitBreak is named ''Legion'' of One.]]
* PartingWordsRegret: In their last conversation, Lightning chewed Serah out for [[CassandraTruth expecting her to believe her story about becoming a l'Cie]] and harshly drove her out of the house. The next time they see each other, Serah [[TakenForGranite crystallizes]] [[DiedInYourArmsTonight in Lightning's arms]] before the latter can actually apologize.
-->'''Lightning''': Serah... I should have listened to you.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner
--> '''Lightning''': [before using Army of One]: "I'm no one's slave!"
--> '''Lightning''': [before using Zantetsuken]: "The storm is here!"
--> '''Lightning''': [[CoolGun Nice gun]].
* PerpetualFrowner: Variety 3: You can count on a single hand the amount of times Lightning truly smiled in XIII. Otherwise, her default expression is one of focus and alertness with a healthy amount of seriousness being conveyed. She smiles more frequently (or at least, more noticeably) in the Japanese version of the game. Either something got lost during the lip-synch editing for the English dialogue or it may have been an intentional decision to try and portray her as a more stoic character for Western appeal.
* PromotionToParent: Once legally for Serah, once metaphorically for Hope.
* TheProtagonist: Its her story, though the fragmented nature early on makes this difficult to see.
* ResentfulGuardian For Hope at first, as she considers him a burden and annoyance though she later becomes a ParentalSubstitute.
* RedMage: In the most traditional sense, her three major classes are [[MagicKnight Commando]], [[WhiteMage Medic]], and [[BlackMage Ravager]] (considered the party's best, in fact), as well as having nigh equal magic and attack growths from both leveling and weapons, giving her all of a traditional Red Mage's abilities. Apparently she was built for the role.
* SergeantRock: This was her rank in the Guardian Corps, pre-game, and she definitely has the harsh rock personality type.
* ShesGotLegs: This is accentuated by her ModestyShorts.
* TheStoic: She's very cold and standoffish, distancing herself from the others until she's defrosted.
%%* SugarAndIcePersonality: Read ''Final Fantasy: Episode Zero''. [[HiddenHeartOfGold Oh, Lightning, you were never fooling anyone]].
* SummonMagic: Lightning's Eidolon, Odin, who in this game is a KnightInShiningArmor instead of the BlackKnight he is in previous games.
--> "Odin... Cut us a path!"
* SuperToughness: Becoming a l'Cie does this to a person as she takes a lot of hits. Taken much further in the sequel as [[spoiler: Lightning is first slammed by a chunk of meteor, then smashed by the full force of a Chaos Bahumut punch, then takes an entire meteor to the face... and seems none the worse for wear because of it.]]
* SheFu: Lightning's fighting style involves much gymnastics with her sword and gun.
* ShockAndAwe: Her magic specialty is (of course) the thunder line of spells.
%%* ShutUpHannibal: To Orphan.
* SpeakFriendAndEnter: In one of the early cutscenes, she pounds on a door that looks like a l'Cie Brand, and then apologizes and asks the door (or the fal'Cie controlling the door) nicely to open, which works. It is explained in ''Episode Zero'' that this door turns away those who are evil:
-->''“This door is a door of trials. It will turn away those who hold evil in their hearts, and lead on those who hold the holy spirit.” The girl with the eyes of an adult knelt before the door, and prayed. The girl with the eyes of a child followed suit. The symbol on the door glowed red, and the door opened.''
%%* SpinAttack: Her Blitz skill is one of these.
* StepfordSnarker: Sarcasm is definitely part of her personality. However, as she develops, it is revealed that some of her more jerk ass comments come from her own insecurities, feelings of guilt, and anger at the situation she has found herself in. She even apologizes to Snow later on in XIII for the numerous comments and healthy amount of disdain she showed him and immediately apologizes to Hope after making some of her harshest comments.
* StillWearingTheOldColors: She quit a minute or two before she boarded the train in the opening, and didn't have time to change.
* SuperReflexes: While in Sentinel mode, she can use Elude which gives her a 50% chance of dodging an enemy attack.
* SwissArmyWeapon: Her gunblade (unlike [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII Squall's]]) is a weapon which can shift between its sword form to a submachine gun instead of being a bullet-powered VibroWeapon.
* ThirdPersonSeductress:
** A beautiful aversion in her base-game and related appearances. She's attractive but is not played for fanservice nor is her outfit particularly revealing, especially in comparison to Vanille and Fang.
** Played with in ''Lightning Returns'', where she can don either more revealing outfits and show off her JigglePhysics, or wear outfits that are even more modest than her original.
* {{Transhuman}}: In XIII she goes from a Human to a L'cie. [[spoiler: After XIII she goes from a L'cie to a human possessing the magic of a L'cie (according to "The Fragments After"). Just before the events of XIII-2, she goes from a human possessing the magic of a L'cie to merging with the Goddess Etro and being called a "Warrior Goddess" at one point and having the manual state she's "something more than human... almost a Goddess herself". During Lightning Returns, she will now serve as "The Soul Liberator" and has been said to be even more powerful than before. By the end of Lightning Returns, she has been considered something of a ''{{God}}'' or somewhere close to it.]]
* TroubledButCute: She's a beautiful soldier who was forced to become the head of her house at a young age following her parents' death, and fought long and hard in order support and protect her younger sister, Serah. She puts up a cold, stern mask to hide her vulnerability, but in doing so estranges her from her sister.
%%* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Plans on pulling this for a couple of chapters. She snaps out of it.
* WorstWhateverEver: "Worst birthday ever".
!!Tropes present only in ''XIII-2''

In ''XIII-2'', Lightning has gone missing and is assumed dead by all but her sister Serah. The reality is that she has been whisked to the timeless plane of Valhalla, where she has [[AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence ascended]] to become the protector to none other than the Goddess Etro.
* AGodIAmNot: "I never said I was a Goddess."
%%* AirJousting: With Caius during the opening.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: She has been pulled to the world of Valhalla (A.K.A. Land of the Dead) to protect Goddess Etro's temple.
* BeAllMySinsRemembered: Lightning considers her entire situation in Final Fantasy XIII-2 as something she deserves and feels that it will serve as her way to atone for all of her past sins.
* BeingGoodSucks: Caius even tells her in The Fragements After that she could live out her life with her friends and family in happiness without anything bad happening until hundreds of years later. However, she couldn't live with herself and knows that she could never face her loved ones by making such a choice, so instead [[spoiler: She goes though endless 900 year loops fighting each and every day of her life in an unending, ultimately lost war]].
* TheBeastmaster: The game's introduction shows her as TheLeader of an army of monsters.
* BigGood: As TheChampion for the benevolent deity in this story, she is the highest authority, the ones Serah looks up to, and the only one that can truly match Cauis in battle.
* BladeLock: With Caius in their battles because they are equally matched.
%%* ChainmailBikini: It's a bit more practical than most, but still qualifies.
* CoolHorse: Odin, of course, though he only appears in the prologue.
* CoolSword: The one she has in the first game is upgraded by Etro along with her armor.
* DecoyProtagonist: Though she has a short DLC episode in the form of "Requiem of the Goddess" to explain her side of the story a bit more, this game is very much about Serah.
* DemotedToExtra: She has a scene in the prologue and narrates in new areas but otherwise she has no screen time.
* DiscOneNuke: In her Knight of Etro armour, Lightning is a Commando with stats at ''level 1'' comparable to Twilight Odin's stats at ''level 99''. The only thing standing between the player and the complete Ruinga of the difficulty curve is a spoiler alert.
* FeatherMotif: Her costume and her gunblade summoning now involve copious amounts of feathers. WordOfGod confirms that this symbolizes a connection to the divine.
* GravityMaster: One of the quick time events during the opening allows for Lightning to use the Graviga spell... which causes all of the surrounding sheets of metal and scrap to collapse in on Caius, crushing him. He doesn't die.
* FluffyFashionFeathers: As part of her new Etro's Champion armor.
%%* FutileHandReach: [[spoiler:To Serah during the Requiem of the Goddess DLC.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Lightning is crystallized in the ending in order to protect Serah's will, according to WordOfGod.]]
* HeroicVow: "I made my choice. I will fight...I will never give up" [[spoiler: This entails fighting an unwinnable battle for countless 900 year loops in which she remembers each one; leading army after army into battle; protecting every single last human across all the timelines, in every point in history; and essentially chains her to a life of death, sorrow, and hardship on top of precluding her from ever being with those she loves and cares about... heroic indeed.]]
* HeroOfAnotherStory: The fragments hint at many adventures in Valhalla and imply that she built the army seen in the prologue by fighting every single monster composing it.
* HyperSpaceArsenal: Calls her new gunblade from thin air.
* LegallyDead: Believed dead by everyone but Serah because of changes in the timeline.
%%* LeotardOfPower
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Another upgrade from Etro; she carries a shield for defense.
* MountedCombat: She can fight mounted on Odin and Bahamut.
* {{Narrator}} She has a monologue at the start of each world and sometimes at the end.
* NoSell: In the Requiem of the Goddess DLC, the Knight paradigm gives her the ability Immortality. Under its active protection, Lightning will block every attack that Caius/Chaos Bahamut can use and takes no damage.
* OutOfFocus: TheProtagonist of the first and third games, but here the focus is on her sister.
* NotQuiteHuman: The booklet states, “…she is something beyond human, almost a goddess herself.”
* ThePaladin: A knight charged with protection of the goddess Etro and her shrine.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler: For Mog. Mog is known as the weakest being of all the void and has lost every fight he has ever been in. After he ended up in Valhalla... he didn't fair much better as Odin goes as far as to refuse to follow the most basic understanding in Valhalla (i.e. the weak serve the stong) since Mog was so weak and leaves him behind. Despite not wanting to fight a creature obviously so weak, she can't bring herself to humiliate him and "fights" him. After winning, rather than leaving him behind as Mog expects, she takes him in and takes care of him.]]
* ShowgirlSkirt: It's made of FluffyFashionFeathers. It's an odd case because her legs are covered by greaves.
* SummonMagic: She can summon her own version of Bahamut now as well as command of monsters.
%%* SwordPointing: To Caius in Requiem of the Goddess.
* TakenForGranite: [[spoiler: Happens to her in the default ending ''and by her own decision''. In one of the fragments you can find, it says she ''knew'' she couldn't avoid this fate, so she acknowledged her defeat and crystallized, with one wish in her heart. It was revealed in an interview that her wish is to protect Serah's will. Referring to protecting the future since her crystallization is the only thing keeping the world from being completely lost.]]
* TransformationSequence: How she got into all that fancy armor. It looks like a less-flashy version of a MagicalGirl's transformation, complete with nudity.
* {{Valkyries}}: Certainly in terms of design and considering ''Valhalla'' is considered the "Land of the Dead" it makes sense in terms of theme.
* VocalEvolution: Compared to the first game, Ali Hillis' Lightning is a bit deeper and raspier here, a shift that continued into the next game and Lightning's appearances in other titles.
* UpToEleven: When leveled up to level 10 for the Requiem of the Goddess DLC, her stats are [[spoiler: HP = 999,999; Strength = 9,999; Magic = 9,999; and she has no damage ceiling.]]
* WolverinePublicity: She's the one on the box-art and the logo but TheHero of ''XIII-2'' is really her sister Serah. The game trilogy as a whole is now the "Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Saga" (''Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2'', and ''Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII'') and an entire event was planned during the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy to announce the third of those, also known as "...the next Lightning game...".
%%* ZettaiRyouiki

!!Tropes present only in ''Lightning Returns''

After the events of ''[[DownerEnding XIII-2]]'', she crystallized herself for five hundred years so she would come back again in a later and more proper time. Now, she has to save the world from Chaos. She is the only playable character in the game.

Her personality has changed a bit from the first two games. She now is more emotionless and distant, but she still has a kind and good heart deep within her which slowly resurfaces as she does good and heroic deeds.

* AGodAmI: By the final battle, [[spoiler:she's been groomed by Bhunivelze to become the new Goddess of Death to replace Etro.]] By the end of the final battle, [[spoiler:she's become ''stronger'' than him.]] [[spoiler: Although she gives it up in the end when convinced by Lumina and Serah that the new world wouldn't be complete without her.]]
* AllLovingHero: Her task has ultimately changed her into this. She tries to help everyone and bring the best out of everyone she meets.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Lightning is unsure whether she's still human after her crystallization. [[spoiler:In addition, she states numerous times that at points where she ''should'' feel something, she isn't, and doesn't really care. Even a vision of Serah didn't get emotion out of her, she noted, and is justifiably worried.]]
* ApocalypseMaiden: The [[{{Cult}} Children of Etro]] view her as the harbinger of the impending apocalypse.
* BadassBoast: She doesn't think much of [[spoiler: Noel's]] attempt to challenge her.
-->''BringIt on, [[spoiler: Noel]]. I've been [[ScrewDestiny fighting destiny]] for a long time now, and I'm getting good at it.''
** Another example is Bhunivelze's challenge.
-->"I'll become a Goddess of death, all right. But not the one you want. I'll be the Goddess who kills you!"
* BadassLongcoat: While what she wears in her default "Savior of the World" outfit can't actually be called a coat or a BadassLongRobe, it's clearly designed to invoke the imagery of one. Some of her other outfits have the more traditional longcoat or robe.
* BrokenBird: In an [[http://www.polygon.com/2013/8/21/4644112/lightning-returns-a-more-vulnerable-heroine-running-out-of-time interview]], Yuji Abe and Motomu Toriyama state that Lightning is less rough and stoic than previous games due to her GuiltComplex finally [[DespairEventHorizon catching up to her]], and that some players might interpret that as her being more feminine.
%%* CoolShades
%%** SunglassesAtNight
* TheChosenOne: She is the Savior chosen by God (I.E. Bhunivelze) to appear at the end of the world to save the souls of humanity.
* DontYouDarePityMe: She reveals in the "Stolen Things" sidequest that she always despised how people pitied her for being an orphan when she was young, so she walled away her emotions and worked to become TheStoic.
* DudeMagnet: She gets a lot of compliments from guys she meets about her looks throughout her quest. One even goes so far to ask her out on a date, which the player has an option to agree or not.
* EmotionlessGirl: Lightning suspects God removed her emotions and Hope's to better go about their mission.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: If she's wearing one of the "suit" style garbs, passing by some women can cause them to remark "[[{{Bifauxnen}} He's a cutie!]]" Other outfits like her [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2 Sphere Hunter]] outfit go right into the trope with women complimenting her legs and saying, "Sexy!" as she runs by.
* FanservicePack: Square Enix increased the size of Lightning's breasts for this game since there would be outfits in that would show off more of her body than what players were used to seeing from her.
* FutileHandReach: [[spoiler:During the last day, she grabs for Hope's hand...and hers goes right through his as he starts to [[DisappearsIntoLight Disappear Into Light]].]]
* TheHeroine: While her main motive for helping God save the souls' of humans is to save Serah, she still generally displays quite a lot of heroism throughout her quest, moreso than she ever has before - from helping anyone in need to encouraging anyone having a difficult time, and even making occasional quotes in battle such as "I fight to give people hope!" and "Evil has a price!". Fairly justified in that doing so helps her power grow. [[spoiler: By the end of the game, she's undoubtedly a true heroine, risking everything to face the most powerful evil God in the universe to give all people a chance in the new world.]] Ultimately, she has ascended from being an anti-heroine from the first game into a true heroine.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: She's originally accused as being an evil savior by everyone when she first starts her quest in Luxerion, and Noel tries to kill her. Her heroic actions later change his and the others' mind.
* HiddenHeartofGold: She clearly wants to do the right things and help others deep down, even if she claims to only be doing it for her sister. [[spoiler: Proven for certain at the end, as she risks everything to kill the evil God Bhunivelze who only wants to let people whom he deems worthy live in his new world and kill the rest, and take his place as a new Goddess whom will allow a new world for everyone.]]
* HighClassGloves: Some of her formal outfits include these such as the Midnight Mauve which is required for the Song of the Savior play and a pity date with a guy at high scale restaurant called "Banquet of the Lord".
* HotterAndSexier: Zigzagged. On the one hand some of her outfits are very skimpy and revealing with skirts, midriff-baring tops, and bikinis. On the other hand she can also wear more conservative and reasonable outfits that cover even more than her previous outfits.
* InvincibleHero: It doesn't mattter if you throw a gigantic monster at her that had already killed a bunch of extremely strong warriors (which is actually a mission in Luxerion), or even the most powerful being in the universe (Bhunivelze). She'll take them all down all by herself without even breaking a sweat. This is further proven in that she's now able to take down any monster or opponent all on her own without teammates.
* IKEAWeaponry: Her shield neatly unfolds and expands for combat, as the opening cutscene shows.
* JigglePhysics: In some of her outfits, mainly ones with bikini tops, to go along with her [[FanServicePack increased breast size]].
* LeotardOfPower: Her default outfit as The Savior is leotard. Bhunivelze must have favored unrestricted movement when he designed it.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Lightning is constantly wearing a shield in this game to protect herself from attacks. If she guards with perfect timing, she won't take any damage at all.
* MessianicArchetype: The savior of the world awakened from death to bring innocent souls to a new and better world.
* MsFanservice: Some of her outfits are extremely skimpy and revealing, to an almost absurd degree, specifically the Mist Wizard and Dark Muse garb templates. The X-2 Yuna cosplay garb and the Miqo'te cosplay garb are also notable in this regard, but there's plenty more as well, some even being bikini styled. It's also worth noting that most of her sexier outfits (such as Electronia, Witching Hour, Amazon Warrior, Rhapsody in Rose, etc.) have better stats than the other ones, further encouraging players to wear them.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Her weapons are not limited to just [[RoyalRapier different]] [[{{BFS}} types]] [[{{Gunblade}} of]] [[CoolSword swords]], she can also wield [[CarryABigStick clubs]], [[CombatHandFan fans]], [[AnAxeToGrind axes]], [[MagicStaff staves]], {{Double Weapon}}s and [[BladeOnAStick spears]].
* OneHandedZweihander: Lightning continues to use her regular battle stance and wields her weapons one handed, even if the weapon in question is bigger than her. Though when she has Greatswords such as the Buster Sword, Caius's Sword or the Behemoth sword equipped she holds it in one hand, but when physically attacking she uses both, but at the same time there are regular swords that are just as big as the Buster Sword.
%%* PimpedOutCape
%%* PowerFloats: Her Cosmocrator garb has this.

* SheCleansUpNicely: She is quite gorgeous in the [[PimpedOutDress Midnight Mauve]] garb. Practically said verbatim by Director Sarzhak.

* SticksToTheBack: Lightning has foregone her visible holster and her HyperspaceArsenal and instead just has her swords hovering slightly above her back, akin to the [=MMOs=] in the series.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: A few sidequests relate to food, and Lightning mentions on several occasions she likes steak. Grilled Behemoth steak is also something she's quite good at cooking. Well, she admits to Chef Aryas it's [[OneNoteCook the only thing she's good at cooking.]]
* VirtualPaperDoll: Lightning will have multiple costume choices as well as adornments for further visual customization.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: The garb design template which includes the Faris costume, the Red Mage costume and a couple men's suits give Lightning this vibe.
* WreckedWeapon: the Crimson Blitz's tip gets blasted off the sword in the opening cinematic. Unlike most examples of the trope, this doesn't seem to phase Light too much as she continues to use the busted sword. [[ReforgedBlade There's a trophy for fixing the sword.]]
* YouCantFightFate: Amusingly, considering [[ScrewDestiny her own actions]], she frequently affirms this to her opponents.

[[folder:Snow Villiers]]
!!Snow Villiers

->"[[IndyPloy Since when have heroes ever needed plans?]]"

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/DaisukeOno in Japanese and Creator/TroyBaker in English.

Snow is the leader of NORA, an armed neighborhood watch that fights local monsters. When the Purge starts, they rebel against the Sanctum. He is engaged to Lightning's sister, Serah. Snow fights with his bare hands and Ice magic. His weapon is a special coat developed by the government which can alter the strength of the wearer. His Eidolon is Shiva, which splits into two sisters, [[http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Snow_Shivas.jpg Styria and Nix]]. They transform into a [[CoolBike motorbike]] during their Gestalt Mode.
''General tropes and those present in the first game:''

* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Snow is ''very'' dedicated to rescuing Serah, to the point where he abandons the others to save her at one point.
* AttackAttackAttack: As a Commando.
* BadassBiker: He rides Shiva as a motorcycle during their Gestalt Mode.
* BadassLongcoat: [[ImprobableWeaponUser The longcoast is his weapon]] so it both looks badass and it makes him more so.
* BarefistedMonk: Although it's obvious he relies more on brute strength than technique. There's ''some'' skill there though, just enough for him to be efficient about it.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Hope, especially after they reconcile in Chapter 7. The only times he's not the one to comforting/protecting Hope is when Lightning gets there first, and in the third game is the ONLY former party member to inquire after Hope's well being to Lightning.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_75XCE0jjM&feature=related Literally.]] Considering how much he loves being a hero [[JustifiedTrope this had to happen sometime.]]
-->'''Snow''': Did someone call for a hero? I thought so.
* TheBigGuy: The tallest member of the party with one of the best stats in HP and physical attack.
* BoisterousBruiser: He's a self-proclaimed hero and very cheerful and loud, in contrast to Lightning.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: Before the L'cie did, anyway, it was his strength-amplifying and bulletproof coat that made him superhuman.
* CompanionCube: Treats Serah's crystal tear as such, talking to it like Serah can hear him and encouraging the same from the other party members occasionally. It apparently worked, because in Episode One Serah confirms that, in her crystallized state, she could not only hear him, but also see the things he saw. She speculates it's indeed because he always carried her crystal tear with him.
* {{Determinator}}: He ''never'', ever, gives up. He never accepts his Focus or the idea of fulfilling it and vows that no matter what happens or what it takes, he will save Cocoon and bring back Serah. Lampshaded by Lightning, who mentions "He's too stubborn to die. And that's his best quality."
%%* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength:
* DumbassHasAPoint: Sure, his claims that being a hero will save the world ultimately lead them to doing everything that Barthandelus wanted them to do... but his point about doing nothing doesn't help anything rings true (i.e. they are ticking time bombs... time isn't exactly on their side).
* ElementalPowers: While a Ravager, learning all ice and water spells.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Twofold for Snow, since he clearly knows ''how'' to fight, the bullet proof strength enhancing coat lets him make the most of it. Being turned into l'cie with magic powers is just the cherry on the top.
* {{Expy}}: Snow's outfit is identical to the clothes Seifer wears in the ''KingdomHearts'' series.
* FakeUltimateHero: Claims to be a traditional 'save the world' hero when all he's done is trounce local wildlife. After transforming, he tries to be the real deal. He was some sort of revolutionary before the game started, and while his tactics were questionable, he was charismatic enough to garner followers. Not exactly a hero, but probably where he got the idea that he was heroic.
* FiveStagesOfGrief: While Lightning is trapped in the anger stage following Serah's crystalization, Snow is stuck in the bargaining stage. He is convinced that he can free her from her fate if he just sacrifices something, ''anything''.
* GentleGiant: Jokes about his shoe size aside, Snow is a [[HotBlooded determined]] [[WideEyedIdealist romantic]] who believes in doing the right thing as a self-designated hero. Also, he ''insists'' on calling Lightning 'nee-san/sis' even though he isn't married to Serah yet and Lightning hates him.
* TheHero: [[{{Deconstruction}} Deconstructed]]. He identifies himself as one, but at first the world is just so [[CrapsackWorld crapsack]] that he mostly serves as [[BerserkButton a source of irritation]] for Lightning until CharacterDevelopment happens. At which point, he's the one to set their long term goal and gets them to acknowledge how much of a team they've all become. While Lightning leads more often then him, he's more traditionally heroic and steers them towards helping bystanders ([[ChronicHeroSyndrome often to the other's exasperation]]).
* HeroicBSOD:
** In Chapter 7, when Hope punctures his fake-it-till-you-make-it bravado and then reveals that he's Nora's son. Snow finally gives vent to all the fear and guilt he's been hiding.
** Most pronounced [[spoiler: after Barthandelus delivers a BreakThemByTalking speech about Serah's Focus to the party after their first boss battle against him.]]
* HiddenDepths: While he appears to be oblivious, arrogant, or thoughtless, he is in fact masking his intense fear of failure and guilt for those he's failed (Nora and Serah, in particular). Since he doesn't know how to make up for those deficiencies, he tries to be gregarious and active. He's so afraid that he'll never make up for it that he can't bring himself to apologize or acknowledge what he did that was wrong. Hope convinces him to be more mindful of his sins.
* HotBlooded: He charges headlong into danger with nary a thought.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Compared to Serah, Snow is ''huge''.
* {{Hunk}}: He's tall and very muscular. This is even lampshaded by Serah in XIII-2.
* FearlessFool: He dives headlong into danger with only a basic plan.
* GlassCannon: With a certain setup he can become a very powerful physical attacker by sacrificing some of his very high HP count.
* AnIcePerson: Like Lightning, his primary element is reflected in his name.
* IdealHero: Leads to being an IdiotHero, at first, since he [[SuicidalOverconfidence doesn't consider anything other than ideals]] when trying to be heroic. However, as the most idealistic one in the team, he can also be the most clear-sighted, which becomes important after the TraumaCongaLine renders everyone doubtful and unsure.
* IdiotHero: Thinks he can save everyone with ''enthusiasm''. His plans are never more complicated than: Summon Shiva, kick ass. He does show a practical mindset at times, but it's clear he tries to fight it.
* IndyPloy: He is quick on his feet, which is the only reason he gets away with the above.
-->"Heroes don't need plans!"
* {{Keet}}: Snow's a positively huge rough-and-tumble looking guy with an energetic personality akin to a kid's.
* HurricaneKick: His version of Blitz is one.
* LargeHam: Just listen to his shouts, boasts, and cries!
* TheLeader: He tries to invoke this trope at the start by being a Type IV, but he just annoys everyone.
* MrFanservice: Judging by his ShirtlessScene.
* MegatonPunch: The [[LimitBreak Sovereign Fist]].
* MemeticHandGesture: Snow's "right fist punches left palm" motion.
* NiceGuy: Never has a bad word to say about his allies or the people of Cocoon. Even if they punch him in the face or are terrified of him.
* NoSell: One of the Synthesis abilites available to him through his Feymark/Soul Blazer can render him immune to magic attacks; unfortunately, it can't be used to heal him either. A more conventional No Selling can be done through Paladin/Winged Saint, which increases the effectiveness of his Guard stances; the official guide claims in optimal conditions he takes [[MadeOfIron 1% DAMAGE]]
* OneManArmy: He protects Serah from the ''army of Cocoon'', beats up trained soldiers by himself with his barehands, and saves Lightning and Hope in Palumpolom along with Fang, trashing every single PSICOM agent along the way.
* TheParagon: He tries to be, and he can play the part, but by refusing to recognize his flaws or the challenges around him he endangers others as much as he tries to empower them. During his journey, once he actually thinks through his (rather dire) situation, he acts as one to the group, being the first to commit to rebelling against the fal'cie and by being continually cheerful in the face of the others' gloom. It pays off.
* PermaStubble: He has perpetual stubble on his face.
* RightMakesMight: One of his quotes when using Sovereign Fist is "Heroes always win!"
* RoundhouseKick: His version of Blindside are these.
* ShirtlessScene: When he's patched up in the Estheim house. Snow is ''ripped''.
* SlasherSmile: Has one in the cutscenes leading up to the final battle.
* StepfordSmiler: He tries to keep on smiling after things go horribly wrong at the beginning, but to Hope this just comes off as being horribly insensitive to other people's suffering.
* StoneWall: Has the highest HP of any character, but the worst Magic and only slightly above-average Strength. He is best in the Sentinel role.
* SummonMagic: Snow's Eidolon is [[AnIcePerson Shiva]], who in this game comes as pair of twin sisters called Nix and Stiria.
--> "Cool them off!"
* ThrowDownTheBomblet: Before he gets l'cie powers, he uses hand grenades to deal area damage.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: Stands by Serah when she becomes a l'Cie, proposing to her shortly afterwards.
* WideEyedIdealist: Refuses to believe they'll either become Cie'th or commit genocide; always knew they'd save the day.
* WrongGenreSavvy: He self-identifies as the hero on a quest to save the world and his girlfriend, and presumes that if he just makes the most heroic choices and never gives up, somehow things will fall into place for him to succeed.
* YouAreWorthHell: Firmly believes that Serah is worth it, even if she's a l'Cie.

!!Tropes present only in ''XIII-2''

In ''XIII-2'', Snow has put his marriage to Serah on hold while he looks for the missing Lightning at his fiance's request. He soon disappears altogether, having been whisked into the vortex of time.

* EightiesHair: That is likely what it looks like without the hat.
* BarrierWarrior: Like in the XIII, he's a Sentinel.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** In a cinematic action, no less during the forest arc.
** In one of the Paradox Endings, [[spoiler: he bursts into the Academy HQ with the TimePolice just in time to arrest TheMole and stop Serah and Noel from falling into a trap, then whisks Serah away on his time-travelling motorbike to fight Caius up and down the timeline]].
* DarkIsNotEvil: At least, not when Snow's wearing it. He's as heroic as ever.
* DemotedToExtra: One of the main heroes now has only one area.
* DisappearsIntoLight: Fixing the paradox in the forest area means that [[spoiler:the events leading up to his arrival there never happened and so he disapears.]]
* TheFettered: He can't keep himself from challenging a much stronger giant flan because it's a danger to Vanille and Fang.
* GuestStarPartyMember: When in the Sunleth Waterscape he can help Noel and Serah.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: The fragments state that he is on his own mission to stop Caius and doing things elsewhere and elsewhen while Serah and Nole do their thing.
* PaletteSwap: Notable as ''Final Fantasy XIII'' is always praised for its visuals, Snow's overall appearance isn't changing much other than coloration and hairstyle.
* TookALevelInBadass: As a GuestStarPartyMember early in the game, he's pretty lame. However, as a DLC boss, his punches hurt like hell and he can easily wreck your team with his [[LimitBreak Sovereign Fist]] [[PuzzleBoss if you don't use the proper strategy]].

!!Tropes present only in ''Lightning Returns''

After somehow making it out of the Void Beyond where he was trapped in ''XIII-2'', Snow becomes the Patron of Yusnaan, described as the "City of Revelry" by becoming its protector as the last of the cursed l'Cie.

* HundredPercentAdorationRating: After five hundred years in office, the people of Yusnaan still think he's doing a fantastic job.
* AnAxeToGrind: During the prologue he wields a giant [[BladeOnAStick pole-axe]] with a [[DoubleWeapon second blade on the end]] that he took off a monster. He used magic to cover it in ice.
* BadassInANiceSuit: His new outfit for ''Lightning Returns'' is a black suit in which he fights monsters, Lightning and chaos itself.
%%* BarbarianLonghair:
* BigDamnHeroes: During the climax on the Final Day [[spoiler: he shows up to destroy the Holy Clavis so it won't destroy the souls of the dead.]]
* BodyHorror: When he [[spoiler:fully absorbs the Chaos he kept contained within the Palace]], he becomes [[spoiler:a mindless Cieth; crystals cover most of his left arm, tendrils snake up his shoulder and onto his face, and his [[RedEyesTakeWarning eyes have changed]]...]]
* BreadAndCircuses: He throws elaborate and extravagant parties and banquets in Yusnaan so that people can at least [[ScrewTheWarWerePartying take their minds off the coming end of the world.]]
* BrokenBird: He used to be bold and cheerful--an eternal optimist. By the time of ''Lightning Returns'', he's a broken man, having been looking after a dying world without hope for hundreds of years.
* DeathSeeker: When he hears that Lightning has woken up, he's glad because it means that "big sis" can have "payback" for Serah's death.
* HeartbrokenBadass: 500 years mourning Serah's death while keeping Chaos contained.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: He thinks that Serah's death is his fault.
* ManOfTheCity: He protects the city of Yusnaan and its people even as the rest of the world falls apart.
* MyGreatestFailure: He still regrets not being able to save Serah in ''Final Fantasy XIII-2''
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He was chosen as the ruler of Yusnaan because everyone knew that he wouldn't become a tyrant.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: He's been protecting the city for a ''looonnng'' time, which helps explain why he seems so burnt out.
* SharpDressedMan: In contrast to his clothes in the previous games he now wears a formal black suit. He's the Patron now, so he has to look respectable.
* TogetherInDeath: He wonders if he will be allowed this fate with Serah after the impending apocalypse.

[[folder:Oerba Dia Vanille]]
!!Oerba Dia Vanille

->"Wishes can come true. But not if you just wait for miracles. Miracles are things we make for ourselves. Here, and now."

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/YukariFukui in Japanese and Georgia van Cuylenburg in English.

A mysterious girl with red hair tied up in pigtails who, despite facing hardships, is an upbeat and caring person. Her weapon is a [[ImprobableWeaponUser strange kind of fishing rod]]. Her Eidolon is the many-armed [[http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Hecatoncheir.png Hecatoncheir]], and it transforms into a [[HumongousMecha bipedal mech]] with [[MoreDakka four machine gun turrets]] in its Gestalt Mode. The resemblance to [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI magiteck armor]] is a complete coincidence.

* ActionGirl: She's able to defeat gigantic monsters with powerful magic.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Her and Fang are both openly very touchy-feely and comfortable with each other, to the point where Vanille can nonchalantly rest her hand on Fang's breast with neither one batting an eye. There's also the fact that the game ends with the both of them [[spoiler:performing a HeroicSacrifice together, transforming into crystal statues locked in an eternal embrace with IntertwinedFingers.]]
* ApocalypseMaiden: [[spoiler:Her Focus is to become Ragnarok]].
* BadassAdorable: The girl gets to ''fish enemies to death'' in the beginning of the game. She even learns ''[[OneHitKill Death]]''. The adorable girl, who all but skips her way through the game learns the one spell your party can learn that will outright kill ''any'' opponent even the final boss in one hit. BadassAdorable indeed.
* BareYourMidriff: Her outfit exposes a lot of her stomach.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's a master of the Death Spell, her summon is a walking killstick, and [[spoiler: she's a part of Ragnarok]]. ''Beware''.
* BlackMage: Second only to [[WhiteMage Hope]] in most magical classes, she's the only character in the first game to specialize in both the Ravager and Saboteur Paradigms. [[SummonMagic Hecatoncheir]] rounds out her ElementalPowers with its [[DishingOutDirt Earth]] damage[[labelnote:*]] The only other source of Earth damage the party can access is the Quake TP ability[[/labelnote]], and she's the only playable character to obtain their LimitBreak from the Saboteur Crystarium: [[OneHitKill Death]].
* BreakTheCutie:
-->'''Vanille''': My name is Oerba Dia Vanille. I'm a l'Cie, from Gran Pulse. And to everyone on Cocoon... ''evil''.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: [[spoiler: Vanille keeps silent and is willing to turn into a Cie'th rather than put Fang and the world in danger, and she unwittingly sucks the other four members of the cast into being l'Cie themselves.]]
* TheChick: Female, cute, cheerful, and tries to support everyone.
* TheChosenOne: In Lightning Returns. [[spoiler: While Lightning may have gotten Godlike power, Vanille as a Savior FAR outstrips what Lightning's capabilities. For perspective, Lightning searches the game hoping to save a handful of people, and, outside of one occurrence, unable to save the souls of the dead. Vanille, with a prayer, is able to save every single person that ever lived.]]
* TheCutie: She's easily the motivator of The Team (along with Snow) and has various moments of BadassAdorable.
* CombatMedic: Vanille is the best Medic in the early and middle stages of the game, but is eventually outpaced in terms of raw healing power by Hope. To compensate, her HP is considerably higher, improving her survivability. She is also capable of acting as a fairly good offensive mage and is the best debuffer in the game.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: She wears an orange skirt under some fur.
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler: After Jihl shows Sazh that Vanille and Fang are responsible for Dajh being made a l'Cie, Vanille begs Sazh to shoot her.]]
* ElementalPowers: While as a Ravager. She specializes in fire and ice.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: [[spoiler: She, along with Fang, was crystallized five centuries ago and was just brought back to life 13 days before the beginning of the game]].
* FakingAmnesia: [[spoiler: Vanille pretends that she's forgotten a substantial plot-relevant swath of memory in order to avoid having to share her DarkAndTroubledPast (and its ramifications for their current situation) with the rest of the party. Her partner Fang, who really ''has'' forgotten, eventually tricks her into admitting it by pretending that she's ''also'' been faking her own amnesia.]]
* GenkiGirl: Consistently cheerful and energetic despite how long they march.
* GirlishPigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails, and is portrayed as both child-like and childish.
* GirlyRun: How she runs, emphasizing her femininity and childishness.
* GreenEyes: Fittingly, they're paired with her red hair.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Vanille is crystallized at the end of the game after completing her Focus. She was on an extended version of one for much of the beginning half of the game, too, by deciding not to become Ragnarok and become a Cie'th instead.]]
* ImpliedLoveInterest: To Fang.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: It's a sort of whip-staff that is, apparently, supposed to be used for ''fishing''.
* IntimateMarks: Her l'Cie brand is on her upper, ''upper'' thigh - to the extent that the male members of the party sheepishly turn away when she reveals it.
* TheMedic: One of the best Medics in the party, able to learn all healing spells.
%%* MoralityPet: To Fang.
* MsFanservice:
** While everyone else's l'Cie brand is on a reasonably harmless position (except for Lightning's), hers is right on the side of her rear end, meaning she has to lift her skirt to see and check it. [[MaleGaze Wonder why that is.]]
** As a more meta example, her design in general, considering that WordOfGod says her outfit is based on Namibian Himban women. For anyone who doesn't know what the average Himban woman wears, it's...very revealing.
* {{Narrator}}: She's the narrator of ''Final Fantasy XIII''.
* NiceGirl: Vanille is kind, sweet and always helpful. [[spoiler: This, unlike her happiness, is actually genuine.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]; Vanille feigns LaserGuidedAmnesia in order to protect Fang from the truth of their past as well as keep Fang from completing their Focus (so she could save Vanille from becoming a Cie'th). This results in Dajh becoming l'Cie. Dajh ends up finding the Vestige -- which leads to the Purge. However [[TheEndoftheWorldasWeKnowIt if Vanille never lied and told Fang the truth from the beginning, Fang would have attempted to complete their Focus (destroy Cocoon) which would would be much worse if it succeeded.]]]]
* NiceShoes: Fur-trimmed, square-toed cowboy boots with turned up soles.
* OneHitKill: Her specialty skill is the Death spell.
* OrgasmicCombat: During the Gaian Salvo attack.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Her top is pink, and she's probably the most girly character in the game.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: To Sazh.
* ThePollyanna: Unless this girl gets depressed, then everyone's ''screwed''.
* PrettyInMink: She wears fur over her skirt.
* RealityIsUnrealistic: There has been some complaints about how fake her Australian accent is, even though Georgia von Cuylenberg is actually Australian (and for one based abroad for so long, retains her normal accent). A likely reason is that she seems at times to be trying for the Hollywood Australian accent rather than her own authentic one, leading to OohMeAccentsSlipping -- by contrast, Fang's accent is unauthentic, due to her voice actress being an American, but it's consistent.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She's 519 years old, chronologically, thanks to being in crystal stasis for centuries.
* RedIsHeroic: She has bright red hair, and is a heroine amongst the cast.
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: With Fang. [[spoiler: As behaviour typically seen in younger girls, it's a sad reminder of how fractured their childhood and development has been, living in war-torn Oerba as orphans, being forced to rely heavily for emotional support (Vanille more so than Fang), not to mention having a Focus that demanded they wipe out thousands to millions of lives]].
* ShesGotLegs: Which are shown off by her short skirt.
* ShowgirlSkirt: Made from the pelt of a bear she killed herself.
* SmallGirlBigGun: Hecatoncheir's gun platform Gestalt Mode.
* StandardStatusEffects: And your best one mainly because she can get Improved Debuffs (which makes Poison, Deprotect and Deshell more successful) and Death.
* StepfordSmiler: Type A. [[spoiler:Vanille's cheerful attitude is just her way of running away from the fact that she knows that it is her Focus to destroy the world. Despite being always upbeat and positive, she has an authentic death wish and blames herself for everything that has happened.]]
* SquishyWizard: As a less extreme example than Hope.
* SummonMagic: Vanille's Eidolon Hecatonchier is a strange many-armed earth creature named after a monster in Myth/ClassicalMythology.
--> "Come on, Hecaton!"
* TokenNonhuman: Vanille serves as this for the first two chapters, being the only l'cie out of the playable characters. She loses this role when everybody else becomes l'cie.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Her tribal-looking outfit is wildly different than the machine-made modern clothing that everyone in Cocoon wears, and she speaks with an accent nobody else does. This clues in the ''player'' that her origins don't match the rest of the cast on the Purge train, but none of the other characters remark on it.
* WhipItGood: Vanille's weapon of choice is a Binding Rod which is a whip combined with MagicStaff.

A professional airship pilot from Cocoon, he tags along with Lightning so that he can confront the fal'Cie. His weapons are [[GunsAkimbo dual pistols]]. His Eidolon is [[http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Surt.jpg Brynhildr]], a female Fire-elemental, who can turn into a [[CoolCar race car]] in her Gestalt Mode.

* AcePilot: He was a civilian pilot before the plot kicked off, but his skills are definitely top notch.
* AfroAsskicker: He has an awesome afro, and can kick just as much ass as the rest of the party.
* ActionSurvivor: His pistols are emergency survival weapons given to civilian pilots in case they crash in the wilderness--meaning he was trained, but his behavior in the early cutscenes implies that this is the first time he's actually put it to use in extended danger and survival situations.
* AttackAttackAttack: As a Commando. He even has the Blitz ability.
* BottomlessMagazines: Never needs to reload, no matter how long the battle lasts.
* BrownEyes: He's the OnlySaneMan and has brown eyes.
* TheChewToy: Poor Sazh just can NOT catch a break. In fact, of his two leitmotifs, one of them is ''called'' [[LampshadeHanging "Can't Catch a Break"]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Sazh is foolish, kind, and cries easily. He's also a hardened veteran AcePilot [[OnlySaneMan who has a very firm grip on reality]] and [[GunsAkimbo two large pistols]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Not even ''close'' to the extent of Lightning or Fang, but he pulls off many a fantastic one-liner, which can be very redundant.
* DeathSeeker: Slips into this briefly in chapter 8, accepting that he'll be executed if he turns himself in but being willing to do it if he can see Dajh as a last request. [[spoiler:Then goes over the DespairEventHorizon ''hard'' when Dajh turns to crystal before his eyes and Jihl reveals Vanille was the one who caused him to be branded. He puts his gun directly to his head, but can't bring himself to end it]].
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: In the Sunleth Waterscape: "[[ShapedLikeItself This dampness is damp]]."
* ElementalPowers: As a Ravager he specializes in lightning and fire spells.
* FunnyAfro: Which he shares with his son.
* GunsAkimbo: Which [[BifurcatedWeapon combine]] to make a [[SniperRifle rifle]] for the combo finale once he gets his fourth [=ATB=] slot.
* TheGunslinger: Sazh isn't nearly as skilled at using guns as the other entries, but has some elements of Vaporizer and Quick Draw.
* HeadPet: Leads to some jokes by fans about how much chocobo shit he's gotta clean out.
* LongRangeFighter: As a Commando and Ravager he attacks from afar with his guns.
* MageMarksman: He wields guns and is the most potent spellcaster in regards to StatusBuffs.
* ManlyTears: When [[spoiler:Dajh crystallizes in front of him.]]
* MasterOfNone: His Strength and Magic stats are both below average; they become the worst of all six characters in the postgame. On the other hand, he has the second-highest HP and compensates for his lack of power by DualWielding with a ranged attack and being the earliest character to get offensive {{Status Buff}}s. With a maxed Crystarium and Ultimate weapon, he can hit a single enemy up to 18 times, making him stronger than [[TheBigGuy Snow.]]
* MoreDakka: His specialty skill, Cold Blood.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Sazh's appearance is modeled after Richard Pryor, according to game designer Yoshinori Kitase.
* OnlySaneMan: Combined surprisingly with TheFool. He'll still make bad decisions and rely on flawed coping mechanisms, but he at least knows they ''are'' bad and that his propensity to crack wise or make light of things ''is'' a coping mechanism because he just doesn't know how to find a genuine solution. This is in contrast to the younger set, who tell themselves that their bad decisions and flawed coping mechanisms ''are'' the solution until outside events force them to admit otherwise.
* PapaWolf: He joins the Purge so that he can destroy whatever's in the Pulse vestige that's being shipped out, hoping that doing so will fulfill his son's Focus.
* PlayingWithFire: Fire attacks are his specialty.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: When using Cold Blood, Sazh tends to exclaim "Wish on THESE fireworks!"
* SadClown: By far the most comedic character and deliberately designed after Creator/RichardPryor, personality-wise. Also, probably the most tragic character too [[spoiler:and at times outright suicidal.]]
* StatusBuff: Alongside Hope he's probably the best Synergist in the game, learning Haste early and almost every buff by the end of the game.
* StellarName: Sazh's guns, much like in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII'', are named after stars.
* StraightMan: Sazh, also serves as OnlySaneMan in similar circumstances.
* SummonMagic: Sazh's Eidolon Brynhildr is a LadyOfWar Valkyrie named from Myth/NorseMythology as opposed to Ifrit.
--> "I summon Brynhildr!"
* TeamDad: Takes it upon himself to look after Hope and Vanille, and, to a lesser extent, Snow and Lightning.
* TokenMinority: Sazh and his son are the only black members in the cast of XIII, rather than just being AmbiguouslyBrown.

!!Tropes present only in ''XIII-2''

Running an airship flight service, Sazh and Dajh were sucked into a temporal distortion. The "Heads or Tails" XIII-2 downloadable content shows that [[spoiler: after spending some time in the casino at Serendipity, a place that is beyond time, they then enter a time gate and wind up even further in the future, and he aids Serah, Noel, and Hope as an airship pilot.]]

* BackForTheFinale: He shows up to help in the FinalBattle.
* CallBack: As a Paradigm Pack 'monster', one of his victory lines is "[[PapaBear Dads are tough, too!]]"
* CatchAFallingStar: [[spoiler: In the ending, Sazh catches the falling Serah and Noel after they leave Valhalla.]]
* DemotedToExtra: A former main, he's now only in cutscenes or fragment text; although he does get a DLC episode, there is no battle involved.
* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: In the game proper he gets his own DLC story.
* SidetrackedByTheGoldSaucer: In-universe example. The temporal distoration drops him in Serendipity. He knows he's still alive and has things to do but wants to score "one more jackpot" before leaving.

!!Tropes present only in ''Lightning Returns''

Sazh now lives in the burnt-out wreck of a crashed airship in the northern reaches of the Wildlands. Between games at some point, Dajh's soul was fragmented and he fell into a coma. Sazh has been looking for the fragments to get his son back, but hasn't found a one.

* BeYourself: [[spoiler:When all five of Dazj's soul fragments are returned to him, Sazh tries acting like his old cheerful self to get him to wake up at last. It works.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Even worse than the last game and the other party members; Snow, Noel, Fang, Vanille, and Hope at least feature prominently in the main four questlines. Sazh is a sidequest and you can play the game without ever talking to him. Yes, his story is included in the "Main Quest" section but it is subordinate to the other Main Quest in the Wild Lands and Lightning has to travel to at least two of the other three areas to complete it.
* DespairEventHorizon: He's spent decades if not centuries watching over Dajh's body and trying to find the fragments of his soul. His inability to locate even one has worn Sazh down into a depressed recluse. He doesn't emote at all when Lightning visits his wreck.
* WhamLine: He dispels any doubts lingering from the last game that [[spoiler:Chocolina is the Chocobo Chick]] when he directly calls the latter by name.

[[folder:Hope Estheim]]
!!Hope Estheim

->"And what if that gets people around you involved? What happens when your actions end up ruining someone's life? What if someone dies? What then, Snow? How do you pay for what you've done?"

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/YuukiKaji in Japanese and Creator/VincentMartella in English.

A young boy originally from a high-class family. His mother was killed while volunteering to help Snow and NORA, so for that he bears a grudge against Snow. His weapon is a [[BattleBoomerang boomerang]]. His Eidolon is [[http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Ff13-summon-hopealexander.png Alexander]], which has the ability to turn into a fortress in Gestalt Mode.

* AbstractApotheosis: This is basically Hope's CharacterDevelopment, but done in a more symbolic way. This is commented on frequently over the course of the plot. Lightning is the {{Foil}} to Hope through this trope [[spoiler:in two ways]]. See also MeaningfulName and BilingualBonus.
* ActionSurvivor: Like Sazh, Hope has likely never seen combat before the events of the game although his weapon implies he has experience with hunting with a boomerang.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: After character development, he becomes extremely mature for his age.
* BattleBoomerang: Hope's WeaponOfChoice. Ingame descriptions indicate that they're normally used in a sport.
%%* BrattyHalfPint:
* CannotSpitItOut: For a good portion of the game, Hope cannot bring himself to say something about Snow's responsibility for the death of his mother, Nora.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Once he gets his head on straight, he starts doing this a fair bit, from summoning Alexander with "Need your help, big guy!" to [[spoiler:dropping into the middle of a racetrack ''directly in front of an oncoming enemy mech which skids to a halt right in front of his face'']] and saying nothing but "Hey there." He's clearly taking a leaf out of Fang's book.
* CharacterDevelopment: With time and traveling alongside the party he goes from a young boy depressed by the death of his mother to a {{Determinator}}.
* ChildMage: ([[MagikarpPower Eventually]]) the most powerful one; by end-game, the only magic class where he's weaker than Vanille is Saboteur, and only because she's got the Death spell.
%%* DeathFromAbove: Hope's signature skill, Last Resort.
* ElementalPowers: The best Ravager in the game, learning all the elemental spells up to the -ga level.
* {{Expy}}: His revenge storyline with Snow also seems heavily inspired by [[ShinMegamiTenseiPersona3 Ken and Shinjiro's]].
%%** Of [[Manga/{{Claymore}} Raki]].
* GadgeteerGenius: Alexander aside, Hope inexplicably has a knack for machines, activating a few {{Mini Mecha}}s the party finds during the game to help them out.
* GenderBlenderName: ''Hope'' is a traditional "virtue" name (like Charity) given to girls.
* GlassCannon: He has the lowest HP of the part, but with some nice weapon upgrades and killer accessories, combined with having the highest natural magic stat in the game, he can slaughter enemies in ''seconds''.
%%* GreenEyes
* {{Hammerspace}}: Where his boomerang comes from and goes to before and after battle, is mysterious. He apparently shoves it down the back of his pants and it gives him no trouble.
* TheLancer: In a KidSidekick sort of way to the old veteran Lightning.
* LightEmUp: His Last Resort spell looks like he's bombarding the enemy with light beams. It's also a direct ShoutOut to FFX's holy spell.
* TheLoad: Played with. How competent or not Hope is depends on how the player uses him, but in the story he knows he's much less capable than Lightning, Snow or Sazh, and if he wants to survive and confront Snow he has to toughen up and learn to not be this. With Lightning's help training him, that's just what he does.
%%* LonelyRichKid: Initially, until the party develops into TrueCompanions.
* LongRangeFighter: As a Ravager he attacks with devastating magic from afar.
* MagikarpPower: Some players dismiss Hope as an inferior medic to Vanille because he doesn't get the higher-level healing spells until later in development. However, his magic power ultimately outstrips Vanille's.
* MoralityPet: Lightning was a grouch and a sourpuss before circumstances made her take care of him. Then she becomes more earnestly heroic.
* NoSell: You wouldn't think Hope'd [[GlassCannon be the sort to be able to do this]], but his Simurgh/Tezcatlipoca weapons can render him immune to physical attacks if its Synthesis ability is activated.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner
-->'''Hope''' [before using Last Resort]: ''I'' decide my fate!
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: Justified in that it works through futuristic technology, allowing Hope to control it with hand movements.
* RevengeBeforeReason: He blames Snow for his mothers death more than the Psicom soldiers that actually killed her, despite that she joined his revolt completely of her own volition. Understandable in that he's still a kid who just suffered a series of traumatic experiences, and he does get better as his character develops.
* RedMage: Hope will out do any characters magical abilities in any role with the exception of Vanille in Sabetour.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: AKA Operation Nora is bringing Snow down for his role in Nora's death.
* SquishyWizard: By far outstrips the other characters in magic, having the highest Magic in the game and being the only character to learn all four Cure spells, all four "-ga" spells, and he learns all but four Synergist buffs. However, his HP is the lowest in the game.
* StatusBuff: Probably the best one in the game, being especially good with defensive buffs.
* SummonMagic: Hope's Eidolon Alexander, who takes the appearance of a MiniMecha not unlike the Giant of Babil from VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV.
--> "We need your help, big guy."
* TagalongKid: He was in Bodhum for a vacation. In other words, the wrong place at the wrong time.
* WhiteMage: Out of all the playable characters, he comes closest to a traditional White Mage as two of his three primary role specializations are built around healing and buffing/cleansing debuffs. He starts with both Medic (healing) and Synergist (buffs). He's the only character to have this combination as Vanille has Medic as a primary but lacks Synergist and Sazh has Synergist as a primary but lacks Medic. He even heals Fang with magic in a cutscene. In terms of offense, his Last Resort skill also resembles the [[HolyHandGrenade Holy]] spell from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'', and his summon, Alexander, is a [[LightEmUp Light]] elemental in other games within the series, summoned here via creating a cross-shaped formation as a landing platform.
* WholePlotReference: His circumstances and costume are largely modeled on Tidus from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'', from color scheme and daddy issues to adjusting to being taken out of his comfort zone and [[spoiler:having his hometown blown up and separated from his parents by an evil government.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: He believes Snow was responsible for his mother's death. He gets over it, eventually.
!!Tropes present only in ''XIII-2''

In ''XIII-2'', the 24-year old Hope is the director of the Academy, a scientific organisation born from the new provisional government of Cocoon. Together with his fellows, he is working on building a future for humanity based on human technology.

* AdventureArchaeologist: He's re-introduced at an archeologyical dig by one-shotting a boss monster.
* BadassBookworm: The head of the Academy research group and still a monster buster.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Noel and Serah from a monster with just his boomerang. This is the previous game's SquishyWizard, by the way.
* BigGood: A more mundane version than Lightning. The Academy researches paradoxes and temportal energy and so provide assistance and direction to Serah and Noel.
* {{Bishonen}}: Now that's he's grown up, he has become quite handsome in a refined manner.
* {{Broken Bird}}: Hope tells Serah that everyone he cared about, has left him for most of his life.
* CallBack: A very subtle and easily-missed example. In XIII, in an optional cutscene, Hope tells Vanille that her smile makes him happy. In XIII-2, during one of his Live-Triggers, one of the options is that he misses Vanille's smile.
* EmperorScientist: As the Director of Academy Hope is the undisputed leader of humanity. His rise to power makes more sense when you learn that his father Bartholomew and Rygdea were the ones who set up the provisional government and Academy after the fall of Sanctum.
* HeIsAllGrownUp: Serah's surprised by his appearance; in 10AF he's taller than her.
%%* HotScientist: Alyssa certainly thinks so. Many fangirls agree.
* ImprobableAge: At 24 he is the head of Academy as well as Academia the new capital of the world making him humanity's de facto leader. The game {{Hand Wave}}s this ahead of time in NPC dialog as the Academy caring more about abilities than age.
* IWillFindYou: Poor guy has dedicated himself to bringing back [[LivingEmotionalCrutch Fang, Vanille, and Lightning]]. Don't think he's forgotten about his mother.
* {{Living Emotional Crutch}}: [[spoiler: Strongly hinted to be the whole group, but most noticed with Lightning, Fang, and Vanille.]]
* MeaningfulName: Snow lampshades it in a [[AlternateEnding paradox ending]]; "The Future is Hope".
* MildlyMilitary: Academy is said to work closely alongside the military but in the climax, Hope himself leads the charge against Caius's army of monsters.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Hope's team builds Augusta Tower in order to create [[spoiler: a manmade fal'Cie...which promptly kills him, his team, and proceeds to wipe out humanity hundreds of years in the future. Though it wasn't entirely his fault, as the fal'Cie traveled back in time to achieve this due to the appearance of a paradox.]]
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: Archeology, engineering, computer science/design, temporal physics, magic...
* OurPresidentsAreDifferent: As the Director he is President Action.
* RegentForLife: A benign version. After spending time in suspended animation Hope can come back in the future and still be unquestioned in authority. However, Hope limits himself to an adviser role, generally staying out of the way of much of the Academy's business in 4XXAF since he understands that others in the future see him as a relic from the past.
* SupportingLeader: Leader of the Academy but the main spotlight goes to Serah and Noel.
* StaticStunGun: His new boomerang has an [[{{EMP}} electromagnetic pulse]] which stuns paradox creatures.
* StepfordSmiler: Implied when Serah and Noel meet with him at the Yaschas Massif, considering next to everyone he was close friends with has disappeared from his life. [[spoiler: Even more obvious in Academia at 4XX AF where he travels into the future on a one way trip, remarking that there was no-one left for him in his own time after his father's death and so there was nothing holding him to that time and that the only people who know who he really is are Serah and Noel.]]

* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Saves Lightning at the endgame, pulling her out of Chaos and leading her to everyone else's souls.]]
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:He spent ''169 years'' being tortured and had his emotions destroyed so Bhunivelze could possess him. And before that, Bhunivelze spent a few centuries breaking down his sanity with illusions of Lightning.]] Just... '''damn'''.

* DisappearsIntoLight: When [[spoiler:Bhunivelze discards him.]]

* DyingAsYourself: During the final day, [[spoiler:Bhunivelze discards his body; freed from his DemonicPossession, Hope has enough time to say goodbye to Lightning before fading away.]]
* EmotionlessBoy: He has all his memories, but he's emotionally disconnected to them and the events of the world below. The only time he ever really shows emotion is around Lightning.
%%* ExpositionFairy
* FountainOfYouth: He has regressed to his fourteen year old appearance. [[spoiler: This is because Bhunivelze wanted to return him to his "innocent" form in preparation for serving as his vessel.]]
* HopeBringer: Prior to his ascension to the Ark 169 years previous, Hope was the [[EmperorScientist shining beacon of humanity]] that kept reason and order throughout Nova Crystalia. [[spoiler: This attracted Bhunivelze who took him and groomed him as his vessel and used the anarchy that his absence caused to establish the Order of Salvation.]]
* ImpliedLoveInterest: For Lightning.
* LoveHurts: The novel all but flat-out states that he's been carrying a torch for Lightning for the past 500 or so years, and that it brought him nothing but pain. [[spoiler:The highlight is Bhunivelze using his feelings for Lightning to kidnap, torture, and possess him.]]
%%* MeaningfulName:

[[folder:Oerba Yun Fang]]
!!Oerba Yun Fang

->"Let Cocoon get what's comin', better that than watch a friend go Cie'th!"

!!!!!!Voiced by Mabuki Andou in Japanese and Rachel Robinson in English.

A mysterious woman from Pulse who grew up with Vanille. Her weapon is a [[BladeOnAStick double-bladed spear]] that can be split into a three-section staff. Her Eidolon is [[http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Ff13-summon-fangbahamut.png Bahamut]], who has no element, which also turns into a flying dragon in its Gestalt Mode.

* ActionGirl: Living on a world where [[EverythingTryingtoKillYou everything wants you dead]] will make you one of these. She's the biggest tank amongst the party and has the highest damage-dealing capacity. Her summon is ''Bahamut'', which adds to the badass factor.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl
-->"I'd tear down the sky if that's what it took to keep Vanille safe."
* BeautyMark: Under her right eye.
* BladeOnAStick: A [[DoubleWeapon double sided]] one which separates into a [[FightingWithChucks three section staff]].
* BloodKnight: It's not extremely obvious, but she seems to ''really'' enjoy kicking her opponents around. One of her battle quotes is, "You're gonna ''squirm''!"
** She seems audibly ''excited'' when casting debilitating spells as a Saboteur.
* CutsceneIncompetence: {{Downplayed}} example completely justified by RuleOfCool. Normally, flinging her Eidolith into the air is sufficient to summon Bahamut, but when the party is falling towards Gran Pulse, she has to have Lightning shoot it after doing just that.
* DeadpanSnarker: "Who ordered the battalion?"
** Another example would be, upon seeing two rather powerful monsters duking it out, "Wow. Look at 'em go."
* EarlyBirdCameo: [[spoiler:You can spot Fang at the bar right at the start of the day 11 flashback.]]
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: [[spoiler:Just like Vanille, she was frozen centuries pre-game.]]
* FluffyTamer: "What a sweetheart!" in regards to Bahamut.
* GlacierWaif: She has the highest Strength and above-average HP, but subpar magic. She is the best Commando in the game and the second-best Sentinel after Snow.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Fang is crystallized at the end of the game to save Cocoon.]]
* LandDownunder: Gran Pulse, a challenging world with unique wildlife? Check. Fang using an appropriate accent? Check. Devotee of [[DeadpanSnarker Deadpan Snarking]]? Check.
* MsFanservice: Her outfit appears to be a sari over a bikini, leaving much of her body on view.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Slightly more built than Lightning, but her arms and legs are still surprisingly thin despite all the physical feats she can accomplish.
* MythologyGag: Has quite a few; her specialty skill Highwind resembles the signature command of the Dragoon Job and is named after the surname of many of the series' previous dragoons like [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyII Ricard]], [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV Kain]], and [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Cid]]. Her ultimate weapon is Kain's Lance, and she even rides a Dragon as a mount like Ricard did.
* NoSell: The straightest example; while not as resiliant as Snow, she can reduce damage quite a bit as a Sentinel, and has access to Dragoon Lance/Dragonhorn and Shamanic Spear/Heretic's Halberd, which can make Physical and Magical attacks respectively completely ineffective; she's the only one who can nullify both.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld
* [[StanceSystem Paradigm System]]
** [[AttackAttackAttack Commando]]
** [[StandardStatusEffects Saboteur]]
** [[StoneWall Sentinel]]
* SixthRanger: The final cast member to join the party. Before then, her allegiance appeared to be ambiguous--searching for someone unnamed, and later capturing Snow for a Sanctum unit. It's only after she meets Lightning that she says she doesn't fully trust Cid and that her goal is to save Vanille.
* SlasherSmile: Has a habit of flashing these before boss battles start.
* StatuesqueStunner: She's 5'9".
* SummonMagic: As a Dragoon, it's only fitting that Fang's Eidolon is the king of dragons Bahamut himself.
--> "Rain down hell!"
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: [[spoiler:Like Vanille, she is capable of becoming Ragnarok and has even done so once in the past when she attacked Cocoon.]]
* SticksToTheBack: Her spear curiously does this while most other weapons have carrying cases. There are straps near her waist, but they aren't large enough to keep the spear from jiggling everywhere.
* UnkemptBeauty: Her hair looks like it's between the "blowdryer" and "brush it out" stages.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: While most of the other party members tend to agonize over solutions to their plight, Fang's solution for every problem seems to be to stab it until it stops twitching.
* WildHair
* YoungerThanTheyLook: [[spoiler: Completely ignoring that she's five centuries old]] Fang has the physical attributes of someone several years older (with her features, demeanor, and height- not to mention the scars on her right arm- would you believe she's only 21?).
!!Tropes present only in ''Lightning Returns''

After Sazh rescued her and Vanille from the Crystal Pillar at the finale of XIII-2, Fang reappears in the Desert Dunes of Nova Chrysalia, now the leader of a brigade of thieves called Monoculus.

* BenevolentBoss: She's the leader of a group of thieves.
* GuestStarPartyMember: She and the Angel of Valhalla are the only party members who fight alongside Lightning in battle.
* LimitedWardrobe: Aside from Lightning and Snow, who seem to get differing wardrobes in each game, she's got the same attire as she did in XIII and XIII-2.
* OutlawTown[=/=]ThievesGuild: Runs one.
* Really700YearsOld: Chronologically speaking she's 1521 years old. Lampshaded in-game when she states she "did the math" and notes this means she's "the oldest hag on the planet".

!!Serah Farron

->"The point is, I have people I can count on. I'll make it through."

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/MinakoKotobuki in Japanese and Creator/LauraBailey in English.

Lightning's younger sister and Snow's finance, Serah was branded a l'Cie by the Pulse fal'Cie Anima prior to the game. Her Focus is what draws the party together, setting the plot in motion. Along with Dajh, she is revived from crystal stasis at the end of the game.

* BodyToJewel: She sheds a crystal tear which Snow keeps with him for the duration of the game.
* TheCutie: A sweet girl and Snow's finance.
* DamselInDistress: She's captured by Anima, forcing both of her protectors (Lightning and Snow) to follow her in a rescue attempt.
* DemotedToExtra: She was originally meant to be the seventh party member, but problems with her implementation led to her being made an NPC, which resulted in Lightning's more serious personality and Fang's GenderFlip.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: When the ''XIII'' trilogy is looked at as a whole, it's a story about Lightning and Serah, and their journey across time and space to find each other again.
%%* HairDecorations
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: She is fairly average in height but anyone would look tiny next to [[TheBigGuy Snow]].
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Between Lightning and Serah, Serah is the better cook.
* TheLostLenore: For Snow, as the comatose lover that he feels both inspired by and tormented byb,
* OnlyMostlyDead: Lightning treats her crystallization as death, but it's later revealed that l'Cie can be unfrozen.
* ParentalMarriageVeto: Rather from the parental substitute. Lightning is ''so'' opposed to it that she thinks "I'm a l'Cie" is something Serah and Snow ''made up'' so that she would approve of their getting engaged.
* PosthumousCharacter:
** [[spoiler:Subverted; she is largely developed as such, but crystallized l'Cie are indeed OnlyMostlyDead, and she's revived along with Dajh during the ending.]]
** [[spoiler:Played straight in ''Lightning Returns''.]]
* YouAreWorthHell: Snow firmly believes she is and she's grateful.
* ZettaiRyouiki
!!Tropes present only in ''XIII-2''

Living with the rest of Team NORA in New Bodhum (Snow off searching for a way to free Vanille and Fang), Serah's world is shattered when monsters attack the village. Noel saves her, handing her a weapon so she can fight.

The two then set off to investigate Lightning's fate -- everyone believes she's dead, but Serah's memory shows the opposite. What is behind these strange events?

* ActionGirl: [[TookALevelInBadass Believe it or not]] she kicks a substantial amount of ass as the game's heroine.
* ApologeticAttacker: She sometimes does this after killing an enemy.
* AscendedExtra: Downplayed, but present: she goes from supporting character in ''XIII'' to playable character and heroine in this game.
* BadassAdorable: Possesses fighting skills on-par with the original party members now, but she's no less cute while doing it. Her victory pose is catching [[EmpathicWeapon Mog]] and giving him a hug. Aaaaaaw.
* BadassTeacher: She scolds a school of miniflan into submission.
* TheBeastmaster: As with Lightning, she can collect crystals of monsters and raise them akin to ''Pokémon'', the datalog explains this is a lesser form of SummonMagic.
* {{Beware The Nice Ones}}: Among her students she has a reputation as a strict teacher and both Snow and Noel comment she is like Lightning when she is angry.
* BlackMage: Serah specializes in the [[ElementalPowers Ravager]], [[StoneWall Sentinel]] and [[StandardStatusEffects Saboteur]] [[StanceSystem paradigms]].
* BowAndSwordInAccord: They're technically the same weapon, but the effect remains.
* CrazyCatLady: Some of her Live Triggers can invoke this, regarding her cat [[WeNamedTheMonkeyJack Snow]]. [[MemeticMutation Because the cat is her only family!]]
* CoolSword: A shapeshifted Moogle that can also [[MixAndMatchWeapon turn into a bow]]
* CombatPragmatist: One of her specialities is sabotaging the enemy to give herself an advantage. When a monster is staggered, she shouts "Go! Go! Go!" to make sure her teammates hit them harder.
* {{Dojikko}} Not always noticeable, but she dashes her knee every time she comes out of a gate.
* DreamingOfThingsToCome: Saw Noel in her dreams before she met him.
* ElementalPowers: As a [[BlackMage Ravager]], she learns all of the [[PlayingWithFire fire]] and [[ShockAndAwe lightning]] spells.
* EmpathicWeapon[=/=]EquippableAlly: Mog transforms into both her sword and bow.
* EnergyBow: Sort of, it fires physical arrows that don't exist till after they've been fired.
* {{Fangirl}}: Of Snow. Best demonstrated in an optional Live Trigger where Noel asks her what Snow means to her where she goes into a rapid rant about how awesome he is as seen [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywMHnJJ-KpM here.]]
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Although she has never fought before in her life, she is just as useful as Noel, who has been fighting monsters all his life, from battle one. However, it was mentioned that she learned how to defend herself, which makes sense as she and the people of Bodhum chose to go off into the wilds of Pulse in search of a beach. Being a teacher by profession instead of a hunter, it doesn't come up as often.
%%* GirlyRun
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: The developers have stated they wanted Serah's sword to turn into a bow to preserve her femininity.
* TheHeroine: XIII-2 is her story of tracking her sister through her time and helping people along the way.
* TheHeroDies: [[spoiler:During the ending, she has a vision that kills her.]]
* HotterAndSexier: Many of her outfits are skimpier than before.
* IRegretNothing: Even when she discovers that [[spoiler: changing the future will eventually kill her]], Serah remains unwavering and continues on her journey. Later [[spoiler: after her death]] she reappears to Lightning and says she had no regrets because she made a promise to keep going on until they were reunited.
* InTheBlood: Takes charge after Lightning goes missing.
* MageMarksman[=/=]MagicKnight: Her specialty is magic but is also skilled at archery and swordplay.
%%* MsFanservice
* MusclesAreMeaningless: As any real-world archer will tell you, it takes a decent amount of strength and stamina to pull a bowstring properly and effectively enough to use it as a weapon. Serah's arms don't look muscular in the slightest. However, [[FridgeBrilliance The "bow" is just Mog shapeshifted.]] It's likely Mog used some kind of magic to enable Serah to operate him as a bow effectively. Also, look at how the bow is constructed, it has more in common with a NERF bow blaster than a traditional bow.
%%* ParrotExposition
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: Pink to Noel's blue.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Noel. They become very close over the course of the game but they have love interests in other people.
* ThePowerOfLove: Serah takes out several miniflans that were attacking Snow with no weapon whatsoever.
* RainOfArrows: With her Ultima Arrow skill.
* RuleOfCool: Mog's "bow" form is some chaotic hybrid of a proper bow and a crossbow's propulsion mechanism; rather than a bowstring, it has a long chamber into which the arrows are loaded before firing[[note]]By "loaded" we mean "materialized", but ignore that for a moment.[[/note]] That would be horrendously impractical ''and'' easily ruined for any physical weapon; combined with the fact that it must be assumed the weapon is spring-loaded or something in order to give it any propulsion at ''all'', which would be significantly weaker than a proper longbow.
* SacredBowAndArrows: Her Ultima Arrow skill, which was "Artemis Arrow" in the Japanese release.
* {{Seer}} She possesses the "Eyes of Etro" which enable her to see the future. [[spoiler: This is BlessedWithSuck because it eats up her life span.]]
%%* SheFu
* SilkHidingSteel: In the words of Noel she is an "angel hiding an ogre."
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: Many of the time periods she visits have guns as commonplace but she uses a bow. Justified as her bow is [[MorphWeapon not a normal bow]] and her archery specific skills wouldn't work with a gun.
* SternTeacher: Her students in New Bodhum call her "Meanie Miss Farron."
* {{Stripperific}}: Her outfit in XIII-2 shows significantly more skin than her one in XIII-1.
* SwissArmyWeapon: Mog, which can transform into a sword or bow.
* TookALevelInBadass: From DistressedDamsel in the original game and at game open to full-blown ActionGirl by Chapter 2.
* {{Transhuman}}: After the fall of Cocoon, Serah is one of the few who have developed natural magical abilities; by Noel's time this is said to be the norm.
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: Delivers one to Caius
--> '''Serah''': "I know the truth, Caius. [[spoiler: I know that every time I change things, I lose a part of my life.]] But don't you see? I don't care. I'm here to protect the future. And I will.
!!Tropes present only in ''Lightning Returns''

* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:She may be a fake, but she states at the end that her attempt to think and act like the real Serah caused her to come to love Lightning as an older sister for real.]]
* BreakThemByTalking: When Lightning refuses to be honest in the end and keeps trying to justify [[spoiler:becoming the new Goddess of Death, the fake Serah then reveals to Lightning that Lumina is the manifestation of all the weaknesses she forcibly tore away from herself when she was young, then tells her she deserves to be abandoned in the Chaos forever. Sazh's young son, he loves Chocobos, and Sazh purchases the Chocobo Chick for him as a gift. Showing extreme maturity for his age, he comforts his father over the untimely death of his mother. Shortly before the game started, he was branded by the Cocoon fal'Cie Kujata and was taken by Jihl Nabaat into PSICOM custody. He completes his Focus and is crystallized a third of the way through the game, nearly prompting Sazh to commit suicide. Along with Serah, he awakens from crystal stasis during the game's ending.

* BackForTheFinale: In both ''XIII-2'' and ''Lightning Returns'', along with his father.
* CheerfulChild: Unlike his dad, he is truly happy throughout the game because he is ignorant of the death going on. He's also kept by PSICOM so he's not fighting monsters.
* ConvenientComa: Has been in one for 500 years when ''Lightning Returns'' takes place.

* NoNameGiven:
** The chick is unnamed. The implication is that Sazh wants Dajh to have the honor of naming it. In Episode Zero, Sazh declares that he'll give it a name "as soon as they get back" and wants to give it a "cool, cute name".

Cid, however, has secret machinations of seizing power in Cocoon and giving rule to the people rather than the fal'Cie, and helps the party in order to achieve this goal. Unfortunately, he is really a l'Cie and only helps the party on the orders of Barthandelus. He asks his NumberTwo to 'cut his strings' and kill him.

* AdaptiveAbility: He, like the hero party, uses Paradigm Shifts to change his fighting style to better suit the battle, being a l'Cie and all.
* BadassArmy: His soldiers, the Cavalry, are a mighty force.
* {{Bishonen}}: The Prettiest Cid yet.
* TheBrigadier: His literal rank is "Brigadier General" and he's helping the government bring down a supernatural threat.
* DyingAsYourself: [[spoiler:Has Rygdea shoot him because he can never escape his life as a l'Cie]].
* FourStarBadass: Cid is an extremely powerful general in the Guardian Corps famous airship fleet.
%%* GrayEyes
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Subverted because he was never on the hero party's side to begin with, but played straight in the case of betraying his fal'Cie]].
* HolyHandGrenade: His attack Seraphic Ray.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: In regards to [[spoiler:challenging his fate as a l'Cie]], which involves him opposing the group that he's supposed to help.
* KungFuWizard: He fights entirely using his l'cie magic and martial arts.
* LegacyCharacter: The Cid of ''XIII'', and one who shakes up his traditional characterisation. Most Cids are heroic [[GadgeteerGenius clever inventors]] who usually provide the airship or flying transport for the party, and some were[=/=]are playable characters. Dr. Cid Bunansa from [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII the previous game]] broke the trend somewhat by being an antagonist, albeit one with good intentions who retained his association with airships and inventing. Cid Raines is an AntiHero, and a soldier (though a [[GeniusBruiser smart one]]) who never so much as picks up a toolbox, never mind inventing something; the fact his troops happen to work on airships is, along with his name, the only real tie he has to other versions of Cid.
* LightningBruiser: Like Snow, he is a brawler with great speed and endurance.
* ManInWhite: His uniform is primarily white with some dark greys. Initially, the party doesn't know if they can trust him, but when he wins them over by revealing his intentions to rebel against the Sanctum, it becomes LightIsGood. [[spoiler:But really, it signifies that he's been untrustworthy all along and has merely been ferrying them around at Dysley's orders.]]
* NobleDemon: [[spoiler:'Demon' is a big stretch, but shortly before he battles the party, he gives Lightning's gunblade back to her (via throw), having took it from her minutes ago.]]
* OneWingedAngel: Upon confronting the party, [[spoiler:he transforms into a creature with ''six'' wings and tries to kill them.]]
* PowerGivesYouWings: Six of them, in fact, in L'Cie form.
* ScrewDestiny: [[spoiler:He turns his back on his Focus in order to stop the hero party.]]
* ShadowArchetype: He can easily be described as the Anti-Snow. He's idealistic, but it was turned against him. Wants to defy his fate, but is forced to follow it. Fights with his fists. The only thing missing is a short fiancée. [[spoiler: Snow himself later goes Cie'th himself, interestingly on the opposite arm to Cid.Their Cie'th forms in general play with this, especially with how they both go through an extra transformation during their battles. Cid has a more angelic themed form while Snow has a more demonic form.]]
* SuicideByCop: [[spoiler: Asks his subordinate to shoot him because he can't die otherwise.]]
%%* TroubledButCute
* YouCantFightFate: [[spoiler:He becomes a crystal for his efforts and is later revived, but still kept under Barthandelus' control]].
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:His reason for attacking you is because it's your Focus to destroy Cocoon]].

!!Lieutenant Amodar

->"Listen up, Farron! Your mission is to dominate this field of battle! I wanna hear that blade sing!"

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/YujiUeda in Japanese and Creator/DaveWittenberg in English.

A lieutenant in the Bohdum Security Regimen of the Guardian Corps and Lightning's immediate superior and mentor.

* AdaptiveAbility: For his battle in XIII-2 he can paradigm shift just like the hero party letting him switch between, attacking, tanking and debuffing.
%%* AmbiguouslyBrown
* BadassNormal: He doesn't use any magic or even [[MagicFromTechnology manadrives]] when the hero party fights him, just his gun, some grenades and his bare hands.
* {{BFG}}: His weapon is a gigantic [[GatlingGood gattling gun]] with a massive bayonet.
* GeniusBruiser: He's an expert at trivia games as well as a powerful soldier.
* {{DLC}}: Comes with the Lightning DLC in ''Final Fantasy XIII-2.''
* InterserviceRivalry: He makes mention of how he dislikes the PSICOM division of the military.
* MightyGlacier: He is a very powerful ally if you can get him to join your paradigm pack in XIII-2 but he's not the quickest.
* ThrowDownTheBomblet: He uses a lot of annoying grenades in battle which can inflict StandardStatusEffects.
* PistolWhipping: Although it's a pretty damn big gun to smack someone with!
* RapidFireFisticuffs: His Iron Bear Claw [[LimitBreak Feral Link]]. The attack itself is a ShoutOut to Akuma's Raging Demon attack from VideoGame/StreetFighter.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: See's NORA's technically illegal monster hunting as well meaning and lets them do their part in defending Bodhum and is a good boss for the troubled Lightning.
* StoutStrength: He is heavy but physically he is very strong.
* SubordinateExcuse: Creator/MaayaSakamoto admitted to playing Lightning as though she had a crush on her superior officer. This was because the scene was recorded when Amodar's design hadn't been finalized yet, and in the beta version of the scene that Sakamoto was using as a reference, Amodar was actually a [[MrFanservice young handsome man wearing a Hawaiian shirt.]] She was quite shocked when Amodar's character model was finalized. For obvious reasons, this trope was never in effect for the English dialogue.

!!Captain Rygdea

->"Damn idealism! Ya feed it blood and it howls for more!"

!!!!!!Voiced by Yasuyuki Kase in Japanese and Josh Robert Thompson in English.

A soldier in Cid Raines's airship fleet, he is Cid's right hand man and aids the party at his request.

%%* TheCaptain
* HeadSwap: His model is a slightly modified version of the standard Cavalry trooper.
* MrFanservice: He got his difficult to model hair for this reason; looking good.
* MercyKill: [[spoiler:He performs this for Cid.]]
* NumberTwo: Cid's right hand.
%%* RebelLeader
* SatelliteCharacter: His role in the game is just as Cid's NumberTwo. Supplementary materials expand his behind the scenes role as one of the co-founders of Academy along with Hope's father Bartholomew.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The game does not elaborate on his fate [[spoiler:after he mercy kills Cid. It was implied that he is among the men made into Sacrifice cie'th in Orphan's Cradle just prior to your arrival, but the sequel then implies he survived somehow.]]

[[folder:All fal'Cie]]
The fal'Cie are god-like beings created by Pulse and Lindsei to run and maintain Gran Pulse and Cocoon. The fal'Cie create servants by branding humans are l'Cie, giving them a Focus to complete in service to the fal'Cie.

* BigBad: They collectively serve as the antagonists of the first game.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: It's a tool morality. Complete your Focus? Be turned into crystal until the fal'Cie revives you with a new Focus. Fail your Focus? Get turned into a zombie.
* CrystalPrison: They crystallize their l'Cie that complete their Focus. Cocoon l'Cie are encased in crystal, Pulse l'Cie turn into crystal statues.
* FalseFlagOperation: [[spoiler:The Cocoon and Pulse fal'Cie purposefully cultivated hatred and fear between Gran Pulse and Cocoon in order to create war and open Etro's Gate.]]
* GemHeart: All fal'Cie have a crystal core.
* LoopholeAbuse: [[spoiler:The reason they create l'Cie is for this reason. Like l'Cie, the fal'Cie have Focuses, but they cannot deviate from or act against their Focus. Human l'Cie can, so the fal'Cie create l'Cie to have servants that can do things they can't do themselves. The ambiguous visions are often purposeful, to make manipulating their l'Cie into doing specific tasks easier.]]
* MechanicalLifeforms: They're all some sort of bio-mechanical being.
* MythologyGag: Most fal'Cie are named for Summons in the series.

A fal'Cie sleeping inside the Pulse Vestige. When Serah Farron found it and it branded her l'Cie, the events of the game were set in motion.

* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: The party kills this machine god ''before'' they gain any sort of advanced power.
* FloatingLimbs: Its arms float independently of its body.
* StarterVillain: The instigator of the conflicts for the first two chapters of the game, but it's just the beginning of the larger plot.

A fal'Cie in charge of overseeing ecological evolution on Gran Pulse.

* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: The Adamantoises and variants that tower over the party? They're the size of his ''fingers''.
* BonusBoss: Titan's trials pit the party against them as sidequests.
* TheSocialDarwinist: It eats or otherwise destroys species it decides are weak, and creates new, stronger ones.

->"You overreach yourselves."

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/HiroShimono in Japanese and Creator/MichaelSinterniklaas in English.

The fal'Cie powering Cocoon hidden within the capital city, He is in stasis while the other fal'Cie draw upon his massive power to cater to the whims of Cocoon's inhabitants.

* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:It wasn't until Barthandelus's death that Orphan was truly "born"; until then he existed in a sort of in-between state, aware but unable to take action as the other fal'Cie took their power from him.]]
* {{BFS}}: [[spoiler:Its shell ''is'' one, and it rises up into the air to use it for [[LimitBreak Merciless Judgment]].]]
* ClippedWingAngel: [[spoiler:In comparison to his monstrous first form, his true form is quite tame]].
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler: Tortures Fang and Vanille to provoke one into become Ragnarok. Even worse, it heals them each time so it can do so again.]]
* CreepyChild: Has a childlike face in the middle of an angelic wheel. WordOfGod says when he was designing Orphan, one of two guidelines he had was that its true form have such a face.
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:He's spent centuries trapped in a sort of un-life state of AndIMustScream. When he's finally "born," he's ready to die.]]
%%* EldritchAbomination
* EvilOrphan: The clue is in his name. His whole motif is based on this, his first form having a loving mother and father incorporated into his designs and his final ClippedWingAngel true form having the visage of only of a child abandoned by the parental figures. It also factors into the lore, where he was apparently forgotten and abandoned by the Maker and other fal'Cie.
* EyeBeams: He can spawn a single gigantic eye solely for this purpose.
* FanDisservice: [[spoiler:He has a creepy giant, serpentine woman caressing him through the whole final battle]].
* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:Orphan is the final boss of ''FFXIII'', with his two forms making up stages 2 & 3 of the final encounter after Barthandelus is defeated for the third time and absorbed onto him.]]
* GoldAndWhiteAreDivine: It's a massive white and silver fal'Cie inside a golden wheel.
* GreaterScopeVillain: [[spoiler:Has been used by all the other fal'Cie as Cocoon's LivingBattery, making him to blame for Cocoon existing at all, yet he technically wasn't "born" until the final phase of the game.]]
* HeadsIWinTailsYouLose: [[spoiler:The multi-phase final boss battle doesn't count for him. He just turns messing with the hero party again. Luckily he gets mauled another cutscene later.]]
* IAmLegion: [[spoiler:When fused with Barthandelus and a representation of Lindzei, he speaks with layered voices.]]
* ICannotSelfTerminate: [[spoiler:The premise. If he could, there would be no need to train l'Cie, the main party, into killing him. So there would be no game]].
%%* {{Jerkass}}: [[spoiler: In just one scene,''Barthandelus'' look nice]]
* LightIsNotGood: Like Barthandelus, his powers are light-based.
* LivingMacGuffin: [[spoiler:He, or rather his death, is what Barthandelus spends most of the game grooming and manipulating the party for.]]
* MeaningfulName:
** As invoked by Orphan himself, he is the Abandoned One, created by the Maker to power Cocoon and then left in a state of un-life and forgotten about. [[spoiler:His design was also made to invoke the idea that when his shell is destroyed and you face his true form, his "parents" in the shell have abandoned him to fight alone]].
** Orphan also ties into the "Ophanim", singular form "Ophan", a class of angels also known as Thrones for they carry the throne of god, and are depicted as giant flaming wheels covered in eyes.
* MechanicalLifeform: The fal'Cie are all these, machine like gods powered by a magical crystal.
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya:
** [[spoiler:"Our name is Orphan! By our hand, the world shall know redemption]]!"
** Additionally, the [[CrowningMusicOfAwesome very impressive music]] that plays when he appears for the first time has an ''extremely'' big, dramatic, and loud opening, and the translation of the choir's [[OminousLatinChanting Latin]] is "My name is Orphan! ORPHAN!"
* NoSell: [[spoiler:He's completely immune to all damage in his final form, until you Stagger him.]]
* OneHitKill:
** [[spoiler:His final form has only one attack besides Doom, which he casts at the beginning of the battle, and repeatedly casts Death.]]
** [[spoiler:Also, it's possible to slaughter him with Vanille's Death if you're lucky]].
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: Easily the most angelic-looking of the fal'Cie, as much as he can while still clearly being a MechanicalLifeform anyway.
* PoweredByAForsakenChild: He ''is'' the forsaken child powering Cocoon. Which is why [[spoiler:he is out to destroy himself]].
* SequentialBoss: [[spoiler:Orphan has two forms that need to be destroyed, with a long cutscene between them.]]
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:Right before the final battle.]]
* StrawNihilist: As noted by Lightning, [[spoiler:it gave up on living before it was even really alive.]]
* TimedMission: [[spoiler:Casts Doom on the party leader in the final battle, though with a much higher timer than usual.]]
* VoiceOfTheLegion: [[spoiler:His shell speaks in male and female voices in unison, and refer to themselves in the plural.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:He's the final boss of the game, and is a Death Seeker as eager to die as Barthandelus and to have the party kill him.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:Unlike Barthandelus, Orphan has been trapped in a purgatorial, tormented, "unborn" state for centuries, giving him ample personal reason to be a DeathSeeker.]]
* YinYangBomb: [[spoiler:His first form is encased in a shell made of a light and gold image of a female Lindzei on the right, and a dark blue and black image of Barthandelus on the left. He also has the debuffing skill Consummate Darkness and the buffing skill Consummate Light]].

The first god, and the mother of Bhunivelze. She was killed by him so he could [[TakeOverTheWorld Take Over The Mortal Realm.]]

* AllThereInTheManual: She's never mentioned in the games proper with the exception of a single Fragment in ''XIII-2.'' In the Japanese version of ''Lightning Returns'', Bhunivelze makes off-hand mention of her to Lightning as the world's destroyer whom he defeated, but never says her name except in the [[TrueFinalBoss Bhunivelze+]] fight on Hard Mode, where he references humanity as her children.
* AntagonisticOffspring: Got offed by her boy.
* DeathByOriginStory: She was dead long before the events of the trilogy even started.
* DeathOfTheOldGods: Her death paved the way for Bhunivelze to become the TopGod of TheVerse.
* MeaningfulName: The word ''Mwyn'' means "gentle" or "kind" in Welsh.
* NotQuiteDead: Bhunivelze always suspected that she wasn't dead yet, which was why he tasked Pulse to find the Door of Souls that led to the Unseen Realm. Turns out Etro found Mwynn first (thanks to her committing suicide and being sent to the Unseen Realm) and discovered Mwynn ''was'' still alive... of a sort. She got devoured by the Chaos, but managed to give Etro one final task.
* OrderVersusChaos: She tasked Etro with preserving the balance between the two Realms, and if this balance should ever be broken, [[ApocalypseHow the universe would end.]] This was absolutely proven right when said balance was shattered at the end of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII2''.

The Goddess of Death who is said to be the creator of the human race, and one of the remaining fal'Cie. Etro does not actually appear within the series in person, but plays a very prominent role in the back story.

* CharacterDeath: As of the ending of the second game, [[spoiler:her heart is pierced, causing the Chaos to flow between worlds and creating the setting for the third and final game.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: The pictures of her in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV'' has her in all black, but she, inadvertently, created humanity and gave them their heart. Mind you [[SuperEmpowering the powers]] she may elect to further bless humanity with [[BlessedWithSuck aren't all that great]].
* DespairEventHorizon: Being powerless compared to Pulse and Lindzei as well as thinking of Mwynn caused her to cross it in the myth.
* DeusExMachina:[[spoiler: Specifically, her Deus Ex Machina actions at the end of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'' break the laws of reality, which causes a TimeCrash and unleashes Chaos into the world, which Etro must attempt to seal at the cost of her life.]]
* DivineIntervention: She often takes pity on humanity in their struggles. [[spoiler: ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII2'' confirms that the ending of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'', in which the party members were de-crystallized and had their l'Cie brands removed, was the direct result of her intervention. This intervention came with a high price...]]
* DrivenToSuicide: Thanks to her DespairEventHorizon where she tore at her own body but thanks to that humanity was born from her blood.
* EnigmaticEmpoweringEntity: She has gifted Lightning with godlike power, as well as granting Yeul and Serah with her eyes allowing them to see the future ''and'' Caius with her heart; granting him immortality.
* GodIsGood: Her mercy is frequently commented on and Yeul says that, unlike the Fal'cie, she grants super powers without turning people into slaves. [[spoiler: The CastFromLifespan aspect is not her fault.]]
* GodIsInept: She tries to help but has a hard time doing anything without [[spoiler:breaking reality, as shown by her DeusExMachina at the end of the first game.]]
* TheGodsMustBeLazy: [[spoiler: Inverted. Etro causes problems by being too active. Saving the heroes from their crystalized fate and reuniting them with their loved ones at the end of the last game distorts the 'true' timeline which directly leads to the death of Yeul. She is a seeress whose visions shorten her life span and the distortions in time increase the frequency of her visions which leads to a premature death. This motivates Cauis to become the game's Big Bad. The power to see visions was given to her by Etro to better govern her city. The only thing she did that did NOT backfire was choose Lightning to be her champion.]]
* GuardianEntity: Etro's duty is to watch over the Door of Souls.
* IdenticalGrandson: Etro is said to be identical to her creator's mother Mwynn.
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: Like Lindzei we never see Etro, only a painting of her in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV'' and on murals in ''Lightning Returns''.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler:Etro broke the timeline when she awoke the main party from crystal stasis at the end of the original game.]]

The deity who is said to be the creator and master of Cocoon. He is the creator of the world in which the games take place and is such worshiped by the fal'cie of Cocoon.

* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:He was a parental figure to the Cocoon fal'cie and abandoned them long before the game begins.]]
* AmbiguousGender: This varies depending on the language. The English version of Lightning Returns always refers to Lindzei as male, but his gender remains unspecified in the original Japanese. In addition, many of the representations and descriptions of Lindzei in the original Final Fantasy XIII describe Lindzei as a motherly figure, implying a female gender.
* FinalSolution: [[spoiler: Lindzei and his Fal'Cie children Barthandelus, Orphan, and [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyType0 Gala]] seem to like commiting mass genocide. While Lindzei's reasons are unknown the others attempted it to open the Door of Souls.]]
* GuardianEntity: [[spoiler:According to the mythology, Lindzei was made to be the protector of Pulse. [[ColonyDrop One can only wonder what the hell happened.]]]]
* HaveYouSeenMyGod: [[spoiler: His disappearance is what drives the antagonist's actions.]]
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: We never actually see Lindzei, although it's represented by a symbol and various statues.
* TheMaker: He created Cocoon, the Cocoon Fal'cie as well as humanity itself out of his sister Etro's blood.
* RiddleForTheAges: Why did Lindzei abandon Cocoon? Doubles as a bit of a DrivingQuestion, [[spoiler:especially to the Cocoon fal'Cie. Whether or not Lindzei is The Maker is also a bit of a puzzle.]]
* SigilSpam: Lindzei's mark is prominent throughout Cocoon, such as the head Dysley's StaffOfAuthority as well as Dajh [[spoiler:and Cid's]] l'cie brands. It is essentially Cocoon and Sanctum's 'flag'.
* {{Satan}}: To the people of Pulse, at any rate. The viper comparisons really drive it home.

The deity which the land Gran Pulse is named after. Appears in one scene where he turns the party except for Vanille into l'Cie.

* ForDoomTheBellTolls: He seems to be made up of church bells!
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: Averted. Unlike Lindzei or Etro, we actually see Pulse.
* OurGodsAreDifferent: His appearance in his [[OneSceneWonder one scene]] is quite bizarre to say the least.
* ParentalNeglect: [[spoiler:Pulse was a parental figure to the Gran Pulse fal'Cie and abandoned them long before the game begins. His reasons for doing so are unknown.]]
* RiddleForTheAges: Like Lindzei he disappeared from the people of Gran Pulse. [[spoiler: Though what his goals are is unknown, his servant [[VideoGame/{{FinalFantasyType0}} Arecia Al-Rashia]] attempted to open the Door of Souls using special souls.]]
