!!Tidus

-> ''"Listen to my story. This... may be our last chance."''
--> Voiced by MasakazuMorita (Japanese) and JamesArnoldTaylor (English).
The main character of the game, who finds himself apparently taken from his futuristic home city of Zanarkand to a place 1,000 years in the future, which is ravaged by a creature known as Sin. He's initially quite immature and ignorant about Spira, but over time, becomes more selfless and questions the basic assumptions many Spirans make about their world.
[[spoiler:It turns out that he is actually from an illusionary copy of Zankarkand created by the Fayth, and [[NoOntologicalInertia his continuing existence is tied to theirs]]]].
* TheAce: He is this in blitzball, Wakka calling him a whiz kid with his most powerful overdrive, lampshading it being called ''Blitz Ace''. Tidus, however, has an AlwaysSomeoneBetter still, as seen below.
* ActionSurvivor: Tidus probably never picked up a sword before Sin attacked, but that certainly isn't going to stop him.
* [[spoiler:AllJustADream: A very rare case of an inversion. Spira is real, Tidus himself is just a dream.]]
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: As the ultimate aim of Yuna's mission is, in fact, [[spoiler:to die]], ''FFX'' is truly a test of this trope.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: He'll always be "[--the son of--] Jecht."
** Even his team logo is an amalgamation of "J" and "T" ('''Jecht''' and Tidus).
* AmnesiacHero: Subversion. He pretends to be this to cover for his genuine reason for knowing nothing of Spira.
* AncestralWeapon: The Brotherhood used to belong to Chappu, Wakka's brother. Wakka decides to entrust the sword to Tidus, because he reminds Wakka of Chappu. It also [[RuleOfSymbolism symbolizes]] the brotherly bond the two develop later on.
* AnnoyingLaugh: His forced-laughter scene in Luca is practically internet-famous. His ordinary laughter is pretty normal.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy
* BadBadActing: The guy can't fake a laugh to save his life.
* {{BFS}}: While not as big as Auron's, the swords Tidus wields are quite large.
** OneHandedZweihander
* {{Bishonen}}: Described by many fans as looking like Meg Ryan.
* BodyguardCrush: Notably, his affection for Yuna is one of the main reasons he becomes her Guardian. [[spoiler:Likewise, Yuna has also fallen head-over-heels for Tidus, and the two finally hook up in Macalania Woods when Tidus tries to comfort her.]]
* CallingTheOldManOut: Tidus has waited years for this. When he finally has the chance, [[spoiler:he can only "call him out" because he's expected to, but he has sympathized too much with Jecht to mean a word of it.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: To the point where his voice during early cutscenes, and his voice with him [[NarratorAllAlong as the narrator of his own story]], [[VocalEvolution were made to sound as different as possible in terms of maturity]].
** At Mount Gagazet, [[spoiler:he learns he's a fictional creation and he'll disappear if Sin is destroyed for good. He reacts with no angst or hesitation, and continues ahead with the plan, willing to die for the same exact reason he's tried to turn Yuna away from]]. This is a far cry from the selfish, juvenile, stubbornly dismissive Tidus we've known through most of the game.
* ChestInsignia: The symbol of the Zanarkand Abes. Possibly doubles as an OrphansPlotTrinket.
* TheChosenZero: As with the previous game's Zidane, his personality seems to be a throwback to more bumbling ''Final Fantasy'' heroes like Bartz and Locke.
* CowboyCop: He'll protect the Summoner, whether Yevon likes it or not.
* DarkSkinnedBlond: Subverted. It's never stated outright, but it's possible he dyed his hair blond. In flashbacks, Tidus as a child has brown hair.
* DecoyProtagonist: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]]. The story starts with him and stays like this for a while. When Yuna shows up, she becomes the center of attention and pretty much the heroine, with Tidus stepping into the role of SupportingProtagonist for her. This is an arguably necessary perspective for the player to be introduced to the mysterious world of Spira alongside him, [[FishOutOfTemporalWater who knows pretty much nothing of it]]. The story still retains an important plot point ([[spoiler:Sin is Jecht]]) that is directly related to him, and [[spoiler:''much'' later, he jumps into the spotlight by forcing the group to TakeAThirdOption, giving the story its most important twist and becoming the hero and protagonist once again, it being ''Tidus'' who has to perform the HeroicSacrifice in the end instead of Yuna.]]
* DoomedHometown: His version of Zanarkand is torn up by Sin.
* EasingIntoTheAdventure: His first task in the game is autographing blitzballs.
* EmotionsVsStoicism: His contrast with Yuna. Emotion eventually wins out.
* [[spoiler:FacingTheBulletsOneLiner: "I know it's selfish... BUT THIS IS ''MY'' STORY!"]]
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: [[spoiler:Getting back to the Zanarkand he knows]].
* FashionableAsymmetry: One of the poster-boys that got Nomura (the character designer) such a divided fandom.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: [[spoiler:Or is he?]]
* TheFool: A classic cheerful, lucky, oblivious hero whose ignorance of the setting lets him play the part of AudienceSurrogate.
* FragileSpeedster: He starts off as this, with very high starting speed and agility but low strength.
* GenerationXerox: His father was a star blitzball player; he, too, accidentally got sucked out of [[spoiler:Dream Zanarkand]], and became a guardian.
* GivingTheSwordToANoob: He can barely hold his [[StarterEquipment starter sword]] without tipping over. "Hope you know how to use it," indeed.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Fits the general good-hearted and innocent nature of the trope as well as fitting his sun theme.
* TheHero: Downplayed. [[ThisIsMyStory It's his story]], but the bulk of it is Yuna's pilgrimage. [[spoiler:It turns out he's TheChosenOne.]]
* HeroesPreferSwords: An interesting example that demonstrates the trope's power. Of the two blitzball players, it would make more sense for Wakka to carry a more martial weapon as a current and former guardian, but it's Tidus who does because ''he's'' the hero, not Wakka.
* [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice: He's willing to go along with the Fayth's plan to stop the cycle once and for all, even if it means he will cease to exist.]]
* HelloInsertNameHere: Gave some interesting problems for the ''X-2'' dubbing, which led to Tidus being the ''last'' character in a voice acted ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' game (as of ''{{Final Fantasy XIII-2}}'') whose name could be entered by the player. ''KingdomHearts'' was the first game in which he's called by his name... '''and it's not even pronounced correctly'''. (See NoPronunciationGuide below.)
* AHeroToHisHometown: Star player of the Zanarkand Abes! ''(waits for applause)''
* HowWeGotHere: Tidus is the {{narrator}} of ''X'', telling the player the story (and his thoughts on the matter) up the group's campfire at the ruins of Zanarkand.
* IconicItem: The aforementioned pendant he wears around his neck, which is the insignia of the Zanarkand Abes, the blitzball team he and his father played for. [[spoiler:Yuna wears a similar pendant in the sequel, representing her memories of him.]]
* ItWasAGift: Twice: A minor Longsword, given to him by Auron (the latter mentioned it was from Jecht), and later his signature Brotherhood.
* {{Keet}}: "HAHAHAHAHA!"
* [[spoiler:LaserGuidedTykebomb and TheChosenOne: Apparently, he was sent by the Fayth to the ''real'' Spira to end the ViciousCycle that was Sin.]]
* LightningBruiser: Towards the end of his path, he starts becoming reasonably strong. While he lacks the punch of [[MightyGlacier Auron]], he can strike close to three times before Auron gets a second turn. With both Haste and Quick Hit, he verges on BladeSpam territory.
* LimitBreak: The Swordplay Overdrives [[SheFu Spiral Cut]], [[BladeSpam Slice and Dice]], [[SwordBeam Energy Rain]], and [[IKnowMaddenKombat Blitz Ace]].
* LovableJock: Not a high school setting, but a fair fit due to his good nature.
* MeaningfulName: Tiida is the Okinawan word for "Sun". Nomura wanted a break from the moody protagonists of ''Final Fantasy VII'' and ''VIII''.
* MixAndMatch: Of the Warrior and [[TimeMaster Time Mage]] classes.
* MrFanservice: Boyish good looks? Check. {{Bishonen}}? Check. Athletic build? Check. Real world female fans? Hoo boy, big check.
* NaiveNewcomer: At first.
** NewMeat: He's new to the Guardian game.
* NiceShoes: A pair of Blitzball boots.
* NoPronunciationGuide: It's "Tee-dus", not "Tie-dus". Since [[HelloInsertNameHere no one addresses Tidus by name during either game]], confusion is inevitable. That being said, the PAL release of the game came with a ''Beyond Final Fantasy'' DVD, which featured JamesArnoldTaylor (the English VA for Tidus) pronouncing the names as "Tee-dus", & this pronunciation is also used in both ''[[DissidiaFinalFantasy Dissidia]]'' games. The confusion mostly comes from ''KingdomHearts2'' using "Tie-dus".
* ParentsAsPeople: His father was a verbally abusive alcoholic who believed in ToughLove and couldn't figure out how to show his real affection towards him before he vanished ten years ago. His mother adored his father and ignored Tidus whenever Jecht was home, which was the root of why Tidus started to resent him. Without Jecht, she died of heartbreak, leaving Tidus alone.
* ResignedToTheCall: His goal is just to get home at first, and he's only tagging along because he doesn't really have any better ideas of what to do.
* RummageSaleReject: A combination wetsuit-hoodie and lederhosen.
* SheFu: A RareMaleExample, with his Spiral Cut overdrive being the best example.
* ShonenHair: Earning him a dubious comparison to MegRyan.
* SoLongSuckers: If you use the Flee command with him to escape from a battle.
-->"Live and let live!"
* SpiritedCompetitor: "No, no, no, no, no. If I say, 'What's our goal?' you say, 'Victory!' When you play in a blitzball tournament, you play to win!"
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Subverted. [[spoiler:During the battle with Braska's Final Aeon (aka Jecht), a Talk option appears in the menu, allowing Tidus to reach out to his father and temporarily soothe his soul, reducing his [[LimitBreak Overdrive meter]], not his HP. [[ItOnlyWorksOnce It only works twice]], so you'd best save it for the second phase of the battle.]]
* ThisIsMyStory: Says so at multiple points. Auron also reminds him of this.
-->'''Auron''': "[[ArcWords This is your story.]]"
* TimeMaster: His sphere grid contains Time Magic such as [[CaffeineBulletTime Haste]], [[BulletTime Slow]], and [[TimeStandsStill Stop]].
* [[spoiler:TomatoInTheMirror: He's a component of the summoned, dream Zanarkand, and isn't really real.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Tidus' voice ''does'' change over the course of the game, a fact which usually goes overlooked. His narration voice is what Tidus sounds like by the time he's reached Zanarkand; it's not exactly a BadassBaritone, but it is considerably more seasoned.
* TrappedInAnotherWorld: [[spoiler:Although it turns out that ''his'' world wasn't even real to begin with.]]
* WalkingDisasterArea: For some reason, Sin is actively seeking him out...
* TheWatson: Don't mind him. He's a little foggy from... um, Sin's toxin.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[HeroesPreferSwords Longswords]].
* WhyCantIHateYou: His final moments with Jecht. Every boy needs a father.
!!Yuna
[[quoteright:158:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Yuna_4707.jpg]]
->''"The people and the friends that we have lost, or the dreams that have faded... never forget them."''
--> Voiced by MayukoAoki (Japanese) and HedyBurress (English).
The daughter of the previous high summoner, Braska, she becomes a summoner herself at the start of the game.
In X-2, she searches for clues about Tidus' whereabouts after finding a sphere that appears to show him imprisoned ([[spoiler:It isn't Tidus, but actually Shuyin]]), resulting in her getting involved in the politics of the Eternal Calm-era Spira.
* AbsoluteCleavage: Her ''X-2'' default outfit: the only thing that compensates for it is the Zanarkand Abes' symbol formed from the laces.
* ActionGirl: In ''X-2''.
* AdrenalineMakeover: From Summoner to Gunner. Go figure.
* AngelsPose: With Rikku and Paine at the beginning of ''X-2''.
* [[spoiler:AnguishedDeclarationOfLove]]
* ArrangedMarriage: ''Twice''; first with [[{{Squick}} Seymour]], and again with an unnamed {{NPC}} before ''X-2'' begins.
* BadassAdorable: Not as {{moe}} as some of the other examples, but she has definite shades. Most notably, when she's kidnapped by the Al Bhed and the entire rest of the party races to rescue her -- [[RedundantRescue only to show up just as she's kicked all the Al Bhed's asses and is about to leave.]]
* BadassDamsel: A gentle and selfless young lady who rescues herself on two occasions.
* BagOfSpilling: {{Justified|Trope}} due to the ending of ''X''. She may have lost the Aeons [[spoiler:due to them being closely related to the Fayth]], but her AdrenalineMakeover makes up for it in ''X-2''.
* BountyHunter: In ''X-2''.
* BlackBraAndPanties: A dark-colored bra is clearly visible in her ''X'' outfit, hinting at her less-restrained, post-AdrenalineMakeover attitude in ''X-2'' in which she "ditched" [[AbsoluteCleavage her bra]].
* CharacterDevelopment: From doormat to heretic in the original, to outlaw/pirate/rebel-with-a-cause in the sequel. Albeit still with some doormat tendencies, as Shinra points out.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: In ''X-2''. Three words: [[CrowningMomentOfFunny "Hero. Summoner. Doormat."]]
* TheChick: Of ''X'''s, though she plays the role of TheHero, due to her going on the pilgrimage.
* ClingyJealousGirl: [[spoiler:"WHO THE HECK IS LENNE?"]]
* [[spoiler:DecoyProtagonist]]: In ''X''.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Her ShutUpHannibal moment to [[spoiler:Yunalesca]].
* DistaffCounterpart: Both she and Tidus are stuck in the shadow of their famous fathers.
** {{Foil}}: But whereas Tidus hates Jecht for it and wants to prove himself better than him, Yuna loved Braska and hopes to match his level of power and heroism.
* ExtremeDoormat: [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]] in the first game, PlayedForLaughs in the sequel when it crosses into ChronicHeroSyndrome.
* FairytaleWeddingDress
* {{Fangirl}}: She starts as a mild one for Tidus, and her gushing over Jecht's legendary heroics annoys the younger Blitzballer to no end.
* FluffyFashionFeathers: Her wedding dress.
* GiantWaistRibbon
* GirlyRun: In ''X-2''.
* {{Guile Hero}}ine: As a Gullwing in ''X-2''.
* GoshDarnItToHeck: "Oh, poopie!"
* [[spoiler:HeartbrokenBadass: Her lover makes a HeroicSacrifice for the sake of Spira. Luckily, you can help get Tidus back in the sequel. Bonus points: Yuna gets to keep all of her {{badass}}ery too!]]
* [[spoiler:HerHeartWillGoOn: It happens one way or another in ''X-2''; either she stops mourning because she's reunited with Tidus (in the [[GuideDangIt Good or Perfect Ending]] if you choose so), or because she moves on (if you choose not to, or fail to gather the requirements altogether).]]
* HopeBringer
* {{Idiot Hero}}ine: Deconstructed. Yuna is more naive and sheltered than "dumb" ,and that naivete is exactly what causes her to make stupid decisions that endanger the party's lives, like [[spoiler:agreeing to marry Seymour to try and get him to confess to the sin of murdering his father]]. [[CharacterDevelopment She learns from it, though]].
* TheIngenue
* LadyOfWar: In ''X''.
* LimitBreak: The [[SuperEmpowering Grand Summon]] technique, which summons an Aeon with a fully charged Overdrive bar.
* MeaningfulName: The yin-yang relationship between her and Tidus is hinted by Yuna's name, meaning "night" [[BilingualBonus in Okinawan]].
* TheMedic
* MessianicArchetype: In ''X''. The population of Spira want her to stick to it in ''X-2'', disregarding her personal needs or desires.
* {{Miko}}: In the first game.
* MismatchedEyes: Her right eye is green, while her left is blue.
* MixAndMatch: Of the [[SummonMagic summoner]] and [[WhiteMage white]] magic classes.
* MixedAncestry: The daughter of a normal human and an Al Bhed. The reason for her MismatchedEyes.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: In-universe, her father deliberately named her after Yunalesca.
* {{Ojou}}: She's treated like a princess in 'X' because of her status and her father's as summoners.
* PassiveAggressiveKombat: One way to interpret a few of her NiceGirl responses to being put down by others. For example, when Dona sneers at the "rabble" of guardians following Yuna and tells her "quality over quantity, my dear," Yuna responds that she only has as many guardians as she does people that she can trust with her life, though [[TakeThat she would never question Dona's ways]].
* PimpedOutDress
* PowerTrio: In ''X-2'', she's the Ego.
* RapunzelHair: In ''X-2'', her hair is tied in a long braid that falls ''past her knees''.
* RebelliousPrincess ''and'' TookALevelInBadass: In ''X-2'', although she had already shown some of her {{badass}} side at the end of ''X.''
* SamusIsAGirl: "And here I thought all summoners were old geezers."
* ShortHairWithTail
* ShowgirlSkirt: Her Gunner dressphere in X-2.
* SilkHidingSteel: Attempting to kill the groom at her wedding, for starters. Also, though she is unfailingly polite in ''X'', she will not take guff from anyone.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Well, it certainly ''isn't'' Seymour that she falls for...
* [[spoiler:StarCrossedLovers: With Tidus. [[EarnYourHappyEnding Play your cards right]], and you can [[OfficialCouple reunite them]] -- ''[[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming for good]]'' -- in the sequel.]]
* StepfordSmiler: Tidus unwittingly causes her to crack by talking at length about how beautiful his Zanarkand is, and how the whole party should go visit. (sniff...)
--> '''Yuna''': Summoners and their guardians are kind of like Spira's ray of light. A lot of people in Spira depend on us. [[LampshadeHanging I learned to practice smiling when I'm sad, you know?]] I know it's hard.
* SuperMode: Her [[GreenThumb Floral Fallal]] Dressphere in X-2.
* TakeAThirdOption: She ends up taking one when she realizes the Final Summoning won't work against Sin, and her desire to save the world without sacrificing people to do so drives her in X-2.
* [[spoiler:TonightSomeoneKisses: With Tidus at Macalania Woods, after the Bevelle ordeal. [[AwesomeMusic/FinalFantasy "Suteki da ne"]] only adds to the [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming "daww"]] feeling as Tidus and Yuna begin their moonlit tryst.]]
* UptightLovesWild: A gender-specific inversion. Yuna is prim and follows the rules; Tidus butts heads with every authority figure.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: While using items in combat in ''X''.
* WalkOnWater: She does this at the Kilika sending.
* WeaponOfChoice: A MagicStaff in the first game, GunsAkimbo in the second.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: In ''X'', her specialities are healing and summmoning, while her physical attacks are laughable. In the sequel, she prefers GunFu.
* YamatoNadeshiko: In ''X''. She's a gentle and determined girl who is like a shaman, wears something like a kimono, and grew up on an island nation.
!!Wakka
[[quoteright:234:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff10-wakka_7001.jpg]]
->''"After this tournament... I'm retiring. Win or lose, I'll be leaving Blitzball for good. But since we're here, we might as well win!"''
--> Voiced by KazuyaNakai (Japanese) and JohnDiMaggio (English).
One of Yuna's childhood friends, who is a few years older than she is. He had a younger brother named Chappu, who was killed on a Crusader operation against Sin while using a machina weapon, causing him to hate the Al Bhed and technology. He's also captain of the Besaid Aurochs, who have never won a single game of blitzball.
* AnimeHair
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards both Yuna and Tidus (whom he actually gives a noogie), and later, Rikku.
* BigFun: Rikku jokes that he's putting on weight in X-2.
-->"I'm gonna be a father soon! Gotta have a little more ''presence'', you know?"
* DarkSkinnedRedhead
* DoesntLikeGuns: On a stricter sense. Stretches to most machina as well as the Al Bhed that continue to use them.
* DumbIsGood: Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but a more dependable friend you'll never meet.
* FantasticRacism: Towards the Al Bhed in the first game. Almost ironic since he's arguably one of the most laid back characters in the game.
** The fact that his son's name (Vidina) is Al Bhed for "future" shows some ''major'' CharacterDevelopment.
** Interestingly enough, he's angry with Rikku when it turns out she's Al Bhed after the fight with her brother's machina, but when it turns out Yuna's half-Al Bhed, he asks himself "Yuna's Yuna, right?" This would suggest that after realizing that one of his closest friends is partially a member of a race he hates most, he's rethinking his attitude.
* HappilyMarried: With Lulu as of ''X-2''.
* HotDad: By the end of ''X-2''.
* IdiotBall: [[spoiler:Towards Yevon. In the beginning, he is easily the most devout of all eight playable characters, ''including Seymour, who is one of the leaders of the religion in question''. It takes the revelation of Rikku and Yuna's Al Bhed heritage, a collective telling off of him by her and the others, the destruction of Home, the revelation of Yevon's deep corruption, multiple assassination attempts on the party, and finally, the truth that Sin can never be destroyed by the Final Aeon for him to ''finally'' wise up for good.]]
* IKnowMaddenKombat: Since his WeaponOfChoice is a piece of sports equipment.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: On the various {{Boss Battle}}s onboard the GlobalAirship.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: A Blitzball.
* TheLancer: Of ''X'''s FiveManBand.
* LimitBreak: The [[BettingMiniGame Slot]] skills, which are divided into [[ElementalPowers Element Reels]], [[MoreDakka Attack Reels]], [[StandardStatusEffects Status Reels]], and [[StuffBlowingUp Auroch Reels]].
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: About Yuna's heritage, and later about Rikku's identity as an Al Bhed.
* LongRangeFighter: His specialty, allowing him to easily hit aerial foes.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: His blind religious devotion often puts him at odds with the events happening around him, and his attempts to cheer up Rikku and her family after the destruction of Home earn him nothing but mean looks and [[WhatTheHellHero a nasty scolding]].
* PapaWolf: Towards Yuna, of course.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Chappu and Yuna.
* PermaStubble
* PromotionToParent: Presumably happened with him and Chappu (although to hear him talk, Chappu was something of TheAce), and to a lesser extent, he and Lulu looked after a young Yuna. Chappu complains a little about Wakka acting like a surrogate parent in one sphere shown in X-2.
* ReligiousBruiser: The most devout follower of Yevon in the party, and one of the physically strongest.
* StandardStatusEffects: His path's specialty is causing a lot of them such as darkness, silence, etc.
* TalkingToHimself: In English, he and Kimahri are voiced by JohnDiMaggio.
* TenMinuteRetirement: After the tournament in Luca, he retires from Blitzball, but [[GameplayAndStorySegregation can be re-recruited later in the game anyway.]]
* WalkingShirtlessScene
* WeaponOfChoice: [[IKnowMaddenKombat Blitz]][[HappyFunBall balls]].
* UnderdogsNeverLose: The Aurochs are the butt of every joke in the league. In ''X-2'', they've improved to the point where the ''Goers'', by far the most arrogant Blitzers, lament that it won't be much of a season with the Auochs absent.
** This is averted in the first game, during the match in Luca. It could go either way.
* VerbalTic: He does have one, ya.
!!Lulu
[[quoteright:182:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lulu_ffx_354.JPG]]
-> ''"No matter how dark the night, morning always comes, and our journey begins anew."''
--> Voiced by RioNatsuki (Japanese) and PaulaTiso (English).
Another of Yuna's friends from Besaid. Lulu is a no-nonsense black mage and experienced guardian, [[spoiler:though she still holds onto years of guilt after watching her first summoner die.]] She was in a relationship with Chappu, and was on her way to being his bride when he signed up for a foolhardy Crusader mission to keep her safe. Sin crushed him and left his body on the Djose shore. The losses throughout Lulu's life have made her fiercely protective of her loved ones, and thus she has dedicated her life to seeing Yuna through her pilgrimage.
* ActionGirl
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Pale-skinned with very elaborately decorated black hair. She's seemingly cold and reserved with a no-nonsense attitude.
* ArmorPiercingSlap:
** As a CounterAttack!
** You'd be expecting that she did this to Luzzu upon finding out that [[spoiler:he's the one who convinced Chappu to join the Crusaders' doomed-to-fail operation]], but it turns out that Lulu had already been told, and hit him when he did.
* BeautyMark: To the left of her lips.
* BlackMage: The only character who doesn't have a hybrid class.
* CoolBigSis: Yuna sees her as an older sister, and later, Rikku does as well, so much that she wishes to learn magic. Rikku herself seems to fantasize about one day possessing Lulu's, ahem, [[UnusualEuphemism talent]].
* DarkIsNotEvil: Lulu's cold demeanor and heavily sexualized outfit would make her a perfect evil sorceress in any other work, but it turns out that she's actually quite warm underneath it all -- she's just carrying a heavy burden of pain and guilt.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Towards Tidus as she gets to know him and sees that he's an asset to their pilgrimage and not a liability.
* DeadpanSnarker: ''Heavy'' on the deadpan, light on the snark. In fact, the creators of ''X-2'' said that they didn't include Lulu as the third playable character because her no-nonsense attitude would have completely shut down Yuna and Rikku's playful banter.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Yet another way in which she sort of stands out as strange having grown up on Besaid Island. Also one of the most intimidating party members until you get to know her better.
* FailureKnight: She has been a guardian to two summoners before Yuna, and one of them did not survive the journey to Zanarkand.
* {{Goth}}: While there's no evidence of a goth subculture in Spira outside of her, it's obvious where the real-world inspiration for her character design came from.
** Real world Goth culture owes a lot to the influence of ''memento mori'', a Romantic-era art movement that emphasized the inevitability of death. It's not inconceivable that in a world like Spira, locked as it is in a spiral of death, there would be people who embraced that philosophy wholeheartedly.
* HappilyMarried: With Wakka as of ''X-2''.
* HeartbrokenBadass: Darn it, Chappu!
* HotMom: By the end of ''X-2''.
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: How does that thing not slip?
* ImprobableWeaponUser: She somehow [[MarionetteMaster manipulates dolls to attack her foes]] (according to the scan description, not even ''Wakka'' understands how she does it), although they're put to better use as a focus for her magic.
* InformedAttribute: In ''X-2'', she's supposed to be heavily pregnant, but doesn't look it because she retains her model from the first game.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Elegant and more mature than the hero? Check. DefrostingIceQueen CoolBigSis? Check and check. Mastery of BlackMagic? And check.
* LimitBreak: The [[SpamAttack Fury]] skill, which spams a low-power version of one of her Black Magic spells.
* MaleGaze:
** Take a good look at how the FMV introduces her. Take a good look at where Tidus' eyes wander when he's using the binoculars on the S.S. Winno. [[OverlyLongGag Take a good look]] at where ''your'' eyesight falls during her VictoryPose.
** The FMV showing her this way is due to her dress. Because FMVs are not rendered in real time with the same small handful of moving models, they hid her from view or only showed from the waist up so they didn't have spend the extra time and money making sure her overly complicated dress was the same each time.
* MamaBear: Towards Yuna in the beginning, toward Tidus once she warms up to him, and towards Rikku [[spoiler:starting around the time Home is destroyed.]]
* [[MrExposition Ms. Exposition]]: Despite her initial skepticism, she gradually comes to accept that Tidus knows diddly about how Spira works (sans Blitzball, of course). After a while, whenever a new situation pops up, she is is usually the first one over to explain it to him. However, when Tidus asks her if this means she believes his story, she dodges the question.
* MsFanservice: Shares this role with Rikku in the first game. In ''X-2'', not so much.
* MyGreatestFailure: Her inability at protecting a past summoner. [[FailureKnight A large deal of guilt and grief for Lulu still stems from this very fact.]] [[spoiler:You can help her finally confront her inner demons at the Cavern of Stolen Fayth.]]
* PeekABangs: Covering the left side of her face.
* PimpedOutDress: It includes a low, gravity-defying corset, a fur-trim, and the front of the skirt is made up entirely of belts.
* PrettyInMink: Her dress is fur-trimmed, despite living most of her life on a tropical island, for [[FetishFuel some reason]].
* ParentalSubstitute: A mother figure for Yuna.
* PromotionToParent: For Yuna, after she came to Besaid.
* PungeonMaster: While all the characters make little quips the first time they use their unique abilities, Lulu's are ''always'' puns. For example, the first time she casts Blizzara, she'll snark "Let me break the ice."
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Averted. Not only are her eyes reddish-''brown'', but Lulu is actually a pretty nice and caring woman underneath that icy exterior. Well, at least if you're one of her TrueCompanions.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: In an overlap with ExecutiveMeddling, Tetsuya Nomura designed Lulu's dress like that to see if the CG artists were up to the challenge of portraying them in that level of detail. They weren't, which is why you'll never see Lulu head-on from the waist down in full CG scenes.
* SettleForSibling: Tidus points out there is definitely something between Wakka and Lulu, but it is implied she has mixed feelings about becoming involved with her dead lover's older brother. In the end, she and Wakka tie the knot.
* SquishyWizard: Averted. See StoneWall.
* StoneWall: Her HP isn't particularly good, but her Evasion and Magic Defense are ''godly'', and her Defense is above average.
* TeamMom: Sort of a surrogate mother to Yuna, plays tutor to Tidus, and acts as a voice of restraint and discipline for the party in general.
* TheSmartGuy: Of ''X'''s FiveManBand.
* TheStoic: Due in large part to being a BrokenBird.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Lulu is the tallest (also oldest) female party member, and she fits the dark, beautiful, and snarky traits just as well.
* ThirdOptionLoveInterest: During a Guadosalam sidequest, Tidus has the opportunity to profess his love for Yuna, express an interest in Rikku, or raise a naughty eyebrow at Lulu.
* TooManyBelts: That skirt of hers? ''All belts''.
* {{Tsundere}}: Boy howdy. She's just as likely to berate her men as she is to praise them. She shows more of a deredere side around Yuna.
* VaporWear: The top of her dress seems to be a corset, with nothing else underneath.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Where she draws items from in combat.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[MarionetteMaster Dolls]].
* WomanInBlack: As befits her dark and intimidating demeanor. [[spoiler:Also emphasizes the fact that Lulu is still in mourning for Lady Ginnem and Chappu.]]
* ZettaiRyouiki: A gap in her skirt o' belts shows she's wearing [[StockingFiller black lacy stockings]]!
!!Kimahri
[[quoteright:238:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Kimahri_Ronso_9851.JPG]]
->''"Yuna needs Kimahri. Kimahri protect Yuna."''
-->Voiced by KatsumiCho (Japanese) and JohnDiMaggio (English).
A Ronso who was alienated from his own people after being unable to honorably accept defeat in a duel, which resulted in his horn being broken. He has been Yuna's protector since just after her father defeated Sin [[spoiler:as part of a promise he made to a dying Sir Auron]].
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Chastised by fellow Ronso for his small size and broken horn.
* {{Badass}}
* TheBigGuy: Of ''X'''s FiveManBand.
* BerserkButton: Just ''try'' to bring harm to Yuna while he's around.
** In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2'', he plays a bit on the ReasonableAuthorityFigure to the Ronso, trying everything in his power to quell their violence. Yet when Garik uses violence on Kimahri, he uppercuts him and gives a borderline ReasonYouSuckSpeech.
* CatFolk
* TheChainsOfCommanding: It's all Kimahri can do to keep the Ronso from twisting the heads off every Guado in sight.
* GentleGiant
* HeroicSacrifice: Tries to take on Seymour Natus, solo, so that Yuna can escape. [[SubvertedTrope Yuna comes back, quickly followed by everyone else.]]
** Kind of played straight if he uses his Self-Destruct overdrive.
* HulkSpeak: A trait common with all Ronsos.
* JackOfAllTrades: Has the smallest path in the Sphere Grid, but can make up for it by having a choice of the other characters' paths except for Auron's, though a few detours or a simple Teleport Sphere is enough to pop him onto that path.
** MasterOfNone: For a large majority of the game he'll basically be just an inferior version of whatever person he shares a sphere grid path with. Not helping is the fact that his InfinityPlusOne weapon is commonly considered downright impossible to unlock.
* MagikarpPower: Guess who learns Ultima? He can also learn the incredibly powerful Nova spell as one of his Overdrives.
* MegaManning: His Ronso Rage overdrives.
* MixAndMatch: of the [[BladeOnAStick Dragoon]] and [[MegaManning Blue Mage]] classes.
* OurFounder: Earns himself a statue on the peak of Mt. Gagazet. If you manage to prevent a Ronso war, it's accompanied by a statue of Yuna.
* ParentalAbandonment: Notes that he no longer has a family shortly before reaching Mt. Gagazet; they presumably abandoned him when he was exiled.
* PantheraAwesome
* PetTheDog: Anyone can forget that he's a fierce warrior because he's also one of Yuna's most loyal Guardians (''before'' becoming a Summoner, even).
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy
* TheQuietOne: He doesn't say a word to Tidus until the aftermath of Operation Mi'ihen. He's apparently making up for being quite boastful when he was younger, at least according to the other Ronso.
* RoundhouseKick: One of his overdrive moves. As a [[MemeticMutation memetic]] bonus, it also works as as OneHitKill.
* SuddenlyVoiced: Tidus grows accustomed to flapping his gums ''at'' Kimahri, and is visibly startled when the Ronso suddenly talks back. Kimahri, like the other Guardians, is moved to console Yuna in the aftermath of Operation Mi'hen.
* TalkingToHimself: In English, he and Wakka are voiced by JohnDiMaggio.
* TheQuietOne: Oh yeah. It's only after Opperation Mi'hen that he even speaks.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Like all other Ronso, he almost exclusively refers to himself by his own name, and rarely even uses second- or third-person pronouns.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[BladeOnAStick Spears]].
* TheUnsmile: Tries out a big grin, at Tidus' behest.
!!Auron

One of Jecht's old friends, whom Tidus has known for some time. It is revealed that in Spira, he was one of the legendary guardians of the last successful summoner, Braska. [[spoiler:It turns out that Braska sacrificed his life and Jecht became the Final Aeon to defeat Sin, an outcome Auron was highly displeased with. He attacked Yunalesca and was killed, but remained as an unsent in order to break the cycle]].
* AndThisIsFor: Seriously, nothing can faze this dude. ...Except during the second battle with Seymour:
--> Talk>\\
'''Auron''': Although he was not the man I once knew, Kinoc was still my friend, Seymour! '''YOU WILL PAY FOR HIS DEATH!'''\\
* ArrangedMarriage: the reason he fell out of favor with Yevon was because he turned one down.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:He couldn't stop Braska and Jecht from sacrificing themselves in the Final Summoning, so he's determined to make sure their children end the cycle forever.]]
* '''{{Badass}}'''
** BadassLongcoat
** BadassLonghair: You can't see it under that collar of his, but it's there.
** HeartbrokenBadass
*** One of his random lines when entering the battle is "I foresee no difficulty". Even when it's just him facing down a Dark Aeon.
* {{BFS}}: And some of them are [[KatanasAreJustBetter katanas]] to boot!
* BlackComedy: Appears to have developed something of a dark sense of humor. For example, before fighting Evrae in Bevelle, he lets out this gem:
-->'''Auron:''' ''(chucking)'' The red carpet has teeth.
* BrokenPedestal: Quite disappointed to see Kinoc becoming more corrupt over time after rising in the Yevonite hierarchy, [[spoiler:but is still angry with Seymour when he kills him]].
* TheCameo: In ''X-2'', [[spoiler:he, Jecht, and Braska are heard (but not seen) shouting advice to the party in the final battles]]. He also appears in a secret cutscene with Gippal.
** He's also a party member in the Underworld level of VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII.
* ChasteHero[=/=]CelibateHero: Part of the reason he teamed with Braska was because he became ostracized from his WarriorMonk sect for refusing the hand of the High Priest's daughter.
* TheChessmaster: Half, and perhaps more, of the plot is his [[spoiler:and Jecht's]] plan. See ShipperOnDeck, too.
* CoolOldGuy: Despite being only 35 years old, but since other characters are about teenagers -- in their early twenties (or their ages are never stated, like Kimahri), he is definitely the oldest in the group.
* CoolShades: And, by extension, SunglassesAtNight.
* CoolSword
* DarkAndTroubledPast
* [[spoiler:DeadAllAlong]]
* DeadpanSnarker: He has a few moments, including the next one:
---> *Battle with Sin has ended, lots of soldiers died, most of them who turned down the CorruptChurch*
---> '''Auron''' (to Kinoc, one of the maesters): A swift retreat... satisfied?
* DefectorFromDecadence: You wouldn't know it to look at him, but this hardened merc was once a monk. One meeting with Yunalesca was enough to make him dissolve ties with the church.
* EyeScream: One of the injuries that he sustained when he [[spoiler:attacked Yunalesca ten years ago]].
* FormerTeenRebel: Inverted; Auron was an upstanding monk in the old days. It was not until Braska'a Final Summoning that Auron realized that his years of service to Yevon [[ReligionOfEvil were wasted]].
* GargleBlaster: Whatever's in his jug. (It's a traditional sake jug, but it may also hold rice wine, in keeping with the Ronin theme.) In his Overdrive, he spits it onto his BFS, which causes '''dark fire and black holes'''. Another has Auron creating a whirlwind and then hurling his entire jug in, at which point the tornado turns into a fiery pillar.
** FridgeBrilliance: [[spoiler:Of course he can handle whatever's in there, ''he's already dead''!]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars
* HeroicBSOD: Apparently, he got ''really'' messed up when [[spoiler:Jecht and Braska both died, and even more so when finding out that it all was in vain]]. Despite a few scenes, it's never quite shown, but [[ShellShockedSenior the result]] is clear.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Jecht and Braska. It's also implied that he was like this with Kinoc (or at least a BigBrotherMentor to him) before their falling out.
* IGaveMyWord: To find a portal to Jecht's Zanarkand, and watch over Tidus in his stead. Sound impossible? Not for this guy.
* IHatePastMe: A pyrefly reenactment of Auron falling to his knees as his friends march to their death. Just the sight of it is enough to make Mr. Cool fly into a screaming rage.
* LimitBreak: Bushido, which is learned from collecting Jecht Spheres, letting Auron unleash his [[StuffBlowingUp Dragon Fang]], [[RingOut Shooting Star]], [[SwordBeam Banishing Blade]], and [[DoNotTouchTheFunnelCloud Tornado]].
* [[{{Mentors}} The Mentor]]
* MightyGlacier: He has low speed, but is your physically strongest and most durable character.
* MilesToGoBeforeISleep
* MrFanservice
* MyGreatestFailure: Despite being one of the few guardians (perhaps the ''only'' one) to survive a successful pilgrimage, this is his motivation for becoming TheAtoner.
* TheObiWan[=/=]QuicklyDemotedLeader: An odd example: while Auron ''succeeded'' in helping Braska finish the pilgrimage, [[spoiler:his failure to stop Braska and Jecht's SenselessSacrifice only served to continue Spira's ViciousCycle.]] It's a spin on being a FailureKnight.
* ParentalSubstitute: Looks after Tidus as a favor to Jecht.
* PermaStubble
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: He gets several, like everybody else. They may also qualify for BondOneLiner.
* RatedMForManly
* {{Ronin}}
* RousingSpeech: Definitely the [[ScrewDestiny "now is the time"]] one at Yunalesca's dome.
* ShellShockedSenior
* ShipperOnDeck: His advice for Tidus definitely seems to be a nudge towards Yuna's direction.
* SkunkStripe
* SpikyHair
* SilverFox
* TheStoic
** StoicWoobie
* TakingTheBullet: One of his abilities lets him take hits for other characters.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Tall? Check. Dark? Double-check. Snarky? Definitely.
* TranquilFury: He brings the beatdown like nobody else, but only three times in the game does he ever show any unguarded emotion: his IHatePastMe moment, his RousingSpeech, and his option to talk to Seymour during the first fight with him (which actually [[UpToEleven increases his strength for that fight]]).
* [[spoiler:TheUndead: As an unsent, he would fall closely to a revenant.]]
* UnfinishedBusiness
* WarriorMonk: He is a former one.
* WeaponOfChoice: {{BFS}}'s claiming to be [[KatanasAreJustBetter katanas]].
* WeUsedToBeFriends: He and Kinoc are not on good terms at the moment, but it's implied that they used to get along. [[spoiler:And Auron is upset by Seymour killing Kinoc]].
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Few would guess he's supposed to be thirty-five.

The daughter of Cid, the leader of the Al Bhed, and Yuna's maternal cousin. She is one of the first people to greet Tidus on Spira, until he's washed onto Besaid. She attacks the party in an attempt to kidnap Yuna and stop her pilgrimage, but the party is unaware that it was her. She is defeated and later joins the pilgrimage as a guardian, hoping that Yuna will give up on it.
In X-2, she and Yuna work with their new friend Paine on a quest to find spheres as part of the Gullwings, [[spoiler:hoping for clues to what might have happened to Tidus]].
* ActionGirl
* BadassAdorable
* BareYourMidriff
* CoyGirlishFlirtPose: In the second game.
* CuteBruiser
* CuteClumsyGirl
* DaddysGirl
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Her famously risque [[http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/6/64/Rikku.jpg thong/bikini miniskirt combo]] provides the page image.
* DualWielding: Second game.
* ExoticEyeDesigns
* FaceYourFears: Camped out in the Thunder Plains for a week.
* FanservicePack
* FearOfThunder: Has grown out of it by the time the sequel starts.
* {{Flanderization}}: The X-2 makes her a lot more perkier and ditzier.
* GadgeteerGenius
* GeniusDitz: Despite having ditz tendencies, she is a skilled chemist, and has more emotional savvy than you'd expect for a girl her age. X-2 put more emphasis on the Ditz part.
* GenkiGirl
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: When Tidus meets up with her again [[spoiler:after she tries to kidnap Yuna by way of HumongousMecha]], Rikku, completely in MaleGaze, strips out of her ''wet'' FormFittingWardrobe.
* GogglesDoNothing: First game.
** Possibly Justified by her growing up in a Desert, doing Dive Expositions, and general tinkering.
* GoodIsDumb: Justified; when she's encountered as a boss during an attempt to kidnap Yuna (the party doesn't know it's her), she's using a machina.
* HiddenDepths: Rikku's aloof personality, cheerfulness, and BadassAdorable status may make her seem somewhat shallow to some. However, if you can get your RelationshipValues with her high enough, she opens up about a lot of her reasons for being such. Bottom line: the death of her mother taught her that you can't waste your life being sad, and that you need to live it up while you can, especially in a CrapsackWorld like Spira. There's more, but going too deep into it would take all day.
* HollywoodAtheist: Subverted. All Al Bhed believe in the power of science over Yevon, but Rikku offers some perfectly reasonable justifications for her lack of belief in spiritual matters. That being said, it's further subverted by the fact that she does seem to believe in an afterlife of sorts, as shown from when she tells Yuna, and later Tidus, [[spoiler:that she'll "see them again"]]. It's really more like she's an AgentScully, who has ''a'' spiritual belief; just not the "main" one, as it were.
** Justified, since in Spira, people can ''physically visit'' the Farplane.
* ItemCaddy: Through her ''Use'' command.
* ItemCrafting: Close enough: she has the ability to upgrade your weapons, adding abilities at the cost of items.
* {{Jailbait}}: And likely other relevant tropes. She's rather young in the first game.
* LimitBreak: Her [[ItemCrafting Mix]] Overdrive which lets her make some very potent attacks from items.
* LoveableRogue
* MissingMom: Her mother died when a machina went on a rampage, leaving her with no siblings besides Brother.
* MsFanservice: Her outfits are quite revealing, especially in the sequel. For a ''very'' specific scene, try the FMV reunion in the Moonflow.
* NamesTheSame: With [[KingdomHearts another Square character]]. It's also the reason she didn't appear in the first Kingdom Hearts game. She was replaced during development by Yuffie. If you look at Yuffie's outfit in Kingdom Hearts, it looks much more like a recolour of a slightly altered Rikku outfit than it does like Yuffie's original [=FF7=] getup. She does make an appearance later on in Kingdom Hearts II, but she's never referred to by name in the cutscenes.
** This is actually an interesting leftover from the game's translation. In Japanese, she's called 'Ryukku' (which might have been deemed too tricky for the English cast members to reliably pronounce and simplified accordingly). Then along came Kingdom Hearts, featuring a major character named 'Riku' and causing problems. In Japanese, 'Ryukku' and 'Riku' are really quite distinct sounding names.
*** So are Rikku and Riku, actually. ("kk" means a "k" with a slight pause right as you get ready to say it.) However, the difference is lost on speakers of other languages not familiar with the rhythm of Japanese pronunciation.

The son of Lord Jyscal Guado and a human, which resulted in him initially being exiled from Guadosalam, but Seymour returned as a summoner, gaining favor with the Guado and the Yevonite church. ** The ''true'' EstablishingCharacterMoment for him? "Pretend I didn't say it" after Wakka says that his condoning the use of machina is not something a Maester would say.
* FantasticRacism: This was the reason why he ended up exiled from the Guados as a child (by his own ''father'', no less), as the Guados were appalled by his Human/Guado hybrid status.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Although it's played mostly for {{Squick}}. Seymour is the sort of faux-complimentary creep you could see being a Facebook stalker in real life.
* {{Foil}}[=/=]EvilCounterpart: To Yuna. Both were [[HalfHumanHybrid born to one human parent and one parent of another race]]. Both their mothers died when they were young. Both had fathers who made difficult choices that involved [[ParentalAbandonment staying out of their children's lives for the sake of peace and their children's well-being]]. The key difference is in their upbringing: Yuna was loved throughout her life despite being half Al Bhed, and always had friends and people who cared about her; Seymour, in contrast, was hated for being half-Guado, was outcast, and grew up lonely and isolated. Hence their different philosophies about the meaning of life -- Yuna came to believe that life was worth living even despite the pain, while Seymour came to believe that life was ''about'' pain and suffering.

If Creator/SquareEnix didn't want us to think the man was evil, they shouldn't have played Arpeggios Of Malice in E(vil) Major every time he showed up.
* LittleNo: [[spoiler:His reaction upon being defeated for the final time.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: His synopsis in the Ultimania reveals that his feelings for Yuna were genuine, and that part of his motivation to save Spira through death was his twisted way of earning her affection.
* MagicStaff: His WeaponOfChoice, and when in your party, he'll typically be dealing more damage then Auron! When you fight him, though, it's curiously absent.
* ManipulativeBastard: Although he clearly thinks that just ''having'' {{Evil Plan}}s makes him a [[MagnificentBastard magnificent]] one.
* MercyKill: His ultimate goal is to perform a world wide one.
* MixAndMatch: A [[SummonMagic summoner]] and a RedMage... basically, if it's magical, he can do it.
* MyDeathIsJustTheBeginning: Possibly doubling up as a ThanatosGambit. Upon the first fight, Seymour is killed by the party in self-defense. He seemed to have planned this, or at least he didn't care if he died. Because the Guados forbade Yuna to send his body to the Farplane, he ends up returning much stronger than ever and decides to fully enact his plans to [[spoiler:fuse with Sin and kill everyone in order to "end all suffering in Spira"]].
* NietzscheWannabe: ''The'' definitive example among ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' antagonists. Whereas being inherently evil and wanting to destroy the world [[ForTheEvulz just because it's there]] or as part of a VillainousBreakdown is a common motivation for them ([[VideoGame/FinalFantasyV Exdeath]], [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI Kefka]], [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX Kuja]], etc.), Seymour is the only one who ''monologues'' about how life is meaningless and how the world can only be saved by being destroyed. (At least until ''Dissidia'' has Kefka follow in his footsteps.)
* ObviouslyEvil: You'll notice we're not spoiler tagging most of the stuff that has to do with him being a bad guy. That's because summoning a demon from the underworld ten minutes after you've been introduced as a character tends to mark you out as one.
* OedipusComplex: [[Webcomic/PennyArcade Sweet fancy]] ''[[Webcomic/PennyArcade Moses]]''.
* OmnicidalManiac: Goes hand in hand with ObviouslyEvil.
* OneWingedAngel: Gets three of these throughout the four times you fight him.
* PetTheDog: Probably the closest thing to a redeemable, good-will, selfless act that Seymour ever committed was giving Baralai a place to stay after the latter and his party were ambushed by a Shuyin-possessed Nooj.
* VillainousCrush: On Yuna.
* RecurringBoss: You fight -- and defeat -- him four times. Yes. ''{{four|IsDeath}}''.
* RedRightHand: Veiny forehead? Check.
* [[spoiler:SelfMadeOrphan: He killed his own father, as revenge for exiling him as a child]].
* SmugSnake: He's manipualtive and scheming, but never really makes the leap into MagnificentBastard territory.
* TheStarscream: For the Church of Yevon.
* SpeciesSurname: Guado, like the rest of his kind.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: He quite literally ''massacres'' monsters in the Blitzball stadium. [[spoiler:Turns out that's nothing on what he plans to do to the world. It's also implied that he was the one who released the monsters he massacred in the first place.]]
* [[spoiler:TheUndead: A revenant type after his first boss battle.]]
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Thanks to his otherwise unflattering robe.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: MetaphoricallyTrue. He legitimately believes that [[spoiler:the only way to free people from the cycle of suffering is via killing them, and seeks to take control of Sin to do so. Given that TheGovernment in Spira is dedicated to ensuring said cycle contiues forever, his plan is simply the ultimate conclusion of Yevon's philosophy.]] In fact, when he says "But even when I'm gone, Spira's suffering will prevail," he seems to say it with some sadness. The only reason he turns out to be wrong is because Yuna and her friends defy Yevon totally and ScrewDestiny.
* WholeCostumeReference: It's hard to notice this in the game itself, but look at the picture of him above. Now look up a good picture of Anima. It's subtle, but the resemblance can't be accidental.
* WouldYouLikeToHearHowTheyDied: He gloats over his killing of the entire Ronso clan to provoke Kimahri. The clan is still in shambles in ''X-2''; Seymour's enmity lives on.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: See WellIntentionedExtremist.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Taken UpToEleven. No matter what he does, what he plans, how ObviouslyEvil he acts, and how downright [[{{Squick}} creepy]] he gets, the public will instantly assume that he's the good guy and anybody who opposes him is a villain without even ''asking'' what the full story is. Somewhat justified in that he's basically one of the world's four Popes, but it's still frustrating for everyone who knows he's evil.
!!Sin
The "primary antagonist" of ''[=FFX=]'', it is an enormous SpaceWhale [[spoiler:that was created by [[strike:the Summoners of Zanarkand to help them win the war against Bevelle 1000 years ago]] Yu Yevon to protect him during his perpetual summoning of Dream Zanarkand.]] Its name originates from the fact that people think that it was born from the sins of their forefathers during the Machina War. It has only one purpose: to bring destruction to technology, or at least any sign of progress in the world.
* BeamOWar: Against the Al Bhed lightning cannon in Operation Mi'ihen. [[ForegoneConclusion It won]].
* TheDreaded: Pretty much all of life in Spira revolves around the unending terror of a millenium of Sin's assaults, punctuated only by brief periods of peace when it's temporarily defeated and for a short time, people can sleep without fear. Every single character's life has been touched negatively by Sin. Every single one.
* EldritchAbomination: It's really hard to make out what it is, but Sin is very, very loosely based on a whale -- with limbs, multiple rows of eyes, and some kind of tower or city on its back. Its interior is an AmazingTechnicolorBattlefield too.
* GravitySucks: The basis of most of its attacks. It's also the name of the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS5dY44Wo7I FMV cutscene]] when it charges its Terra Graviton attack.
* IWantThemAlive: He won't lay a tentacle on Tidus.
* TheJuggernaut: A giant beast that shrugs off pretty much everything thrown at it.
* {{Kaiju}}: To the point of being an {{Expy}} of Godzilla. "Gojira" is a portmanteau of "gorilla" and "kujira" for whale, and Sin is loosely based on it. It attacks from the sea, goes straight for cities or its offspring, and [[spoiler:it's the weapon of mass destruction of an ancient war gone horribly wrong]].
* [[spoiler:LivingBodysuit: For Yu Yevon.]]
* LostInTranslation[=/=]{{Woolseyism}}: The Japanese name for the character is written "Shin", which can be interpreted as the English word "sin" (see below), but also, due to the Japanese language being abundant in homonyms, as [[GodIsEvil "god"]] or "truth".
* MeaningfulName: Its name is derived from the concept of willingly breaking taboos from one's religion, and the creature is named as such because the people believed it originated from the fact that they sinned or their forefathers sinned during the war.
** In the Japanese version, its name is written with katakana that reads as "Shin" [[SarcasmMode (what a tweest!)]]. "Shin" is one of several ways to read the kanji for "deity." A malevolent deity that goes around punishing people for their transgressions seems to be the character concept of Sin.
* [[spoiler:MedievalStasis: The whole point of its existence. Sin seeks out and destroys all advanced technology, and spreads a religion that bans the use of technology, so that no civilization will create a ship powerful enough to venture out into the ocean and discover Dream Zanarkand.]]
* MookMaker: Nearly every encounter with Sin involves it spawning "Sinspawn." Some Sinspawn are themselves {{Mook Maker}}s as well, such as the ones that assault Zanarkand in the beginning.
* PapaWolf: "Sin ''always'' returns for its spawn."
* PopulationControl: Sin automatically seeks out populated towns and smashes them to bits. [[spoiler:This is Yu Yevon's way of ensuring that technology won't advance]].
* SequentialBoss: Fought four times in a row, although there is a short break before the last one in the sequence. [[SuspiciousVideoGameGenerosity Appropriate]], seeing as the fourth battle is ThatOneBoss.
* SphereOfDestruction: Erects a gravity shield at Mushroom Rock.
** Sin first appears above Zanarkand as one of these. [[spoiler:This is caused by Jecht pushing his nose into the barrier surrounding Dream Zanarkand]].
* TimeLimitBoss: The last battle with him. If you don't defeat him before his Overdrive bar fills up, [[TotalPartyKill you're]] [[NonStandardGameover doomed]].
* [[spoiler:ViciousCycle]]
!!Yu Yevon
The founder of the religion of the same name, and father of Yunalesca. He was the leader of Zanarkand a thousand years before the game and led them in the great Machina War against [[spoiler:Bevelle. He's the '''real''' BigBad of the game, lingering on as a mindless spirit that summons the armor known as Sin.]]
* AndIMustScream: The strain of [[spoiler:summoning Sin]] and [[spoiler:Dream Zanarkand]] at the same time broke his mind. Now he can't do anything else or even contemplate stopping.
* [[spoiler:AntiVillain: Type IV. He honestly doesn't know what he's doing anymore. Whether or not he's self-aware or even sentient isn't clear.]]
* [[spoiler:AxCrazy: Although it's implied that he doesn't know what he's doing anymore.]]
* [[spoiler:BigBad]]
* [[spoiler:DemonicPossession]]
* TheFundamentalist: From what little we actually know about him, he was a pretty zealous leader, considering that he [[spoiler:condemned all of Zanarkand's citizens to becoming Fayths and ground technological progress to a halt for over a thousand years.]]
* [[spoiler:FlatCharacter]]: Justified. He has an extensive background and possessed an identity at one point, but because of his actions prior to the game, he has become a blank slate. Just what he was like is never revealed, which has resulted in a couple of different character interpretations.
* GiantEyeOfDoom: Yevon's symbol is watching you. ''Always''. [[spoiler:The eye is, all intents and purposes, the final boss of the game]].
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: Although we ''do'' see him for [[spoiler:the final battle, it is only in his parasitic form.]]
* [[spoiler:GodIsEvil]]: Subverted in that he's actually a summoner, but is [[spoiler:revered as a god by the people of Spira]]. At the time of the game, he is not aware of his actions and is said to be "neither good nor evil," but nevertheless acts as a destructive force.
* [[spoiler:HiddenVillain]]: His name is not dropped until the third act of the game, and he does not even make an appearance until the final battle. Even worse, his human form is never seen. Despite this, his influence can be felt throughout the entire game through the Yevon religion.
* LuddWasRight: [[spoiler:The purpose of Sin is to keep Spira frozen in a pre-industrial dark age]].
* [[spoiler:TheManBehindTheCurtain]]
* [[spoiler:ObliviouslyEvil]]: Because his sense of self has been destroyed, he has ''absolutely'' no idea of [[spoiler:all the death and destruction he's causing during the game]]. However, he may have been evil prior to his mind wipe.
* TheParagonAlwaysRebels: Said to to have been a "peerless" summoner.
* [[spoiler:TrueFinalBoss]]

->''"It is better to die in hope than to live in despair. Let me be your liberator!"''
-->Voiced by YokoKoyanagi (Japanese) and JuliaFletcher (English).
Yu Yevon's daughter, and the first summoner to defeat Sin. The original final aeon was created from her husband and guardian, Lord Zaon. Has been living in Zanarkand as an unsent for a thousand years, acting as the guide to the summoners who complete their pilgrimage.
* BareYourMidriff
* ChainmailBikini
* ClimaxBoss: An even bigger one than Seymour Natus was back in Bevelle, in both senses of the trope; not only are the stakes raised immensely upon confronting her, but Yunalesca is widely considered to be one of the hardest bosses in the game.
* [[spoiler:CombatTentacles]]
* DaddysLittleVillain: The fact that she is so devoted to honoring Yu Yevon is one of the main driving forces behind the plot. Whether or not she commits her villainous actions because she thinks daddy would be proud or because he ''specifically told'' her to is a subject of much debate.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:She crosses it before she dies, as shown from how she believes that there is no hope for Spira without the Final Aeon.]]
* {{Fallen Hero}}ine
* GuideDangIt: The first time you face her, you probably won't think to [[spoiler:keep your party Zombified from her Hellbiter attack]]. Of course, [[SadisticChoice that leaves you with a different problem]]...
* HairAntennae: Though nowhere near as extreme as Seymour's.
* [[spoiler:HeroKiller]]: [[spoiler:That hero was ''Auron''.]]
* KnightTemplar
* {{Medusa}}
* OneWingedAngel: ''Twice''.
* [[spoiler:OurGhostsAreDifferent[=/=]OurZombiesAreDifferent]]
* PrehensileHair: You know her one OneWingedAngel form? Yeah, that's really her hair. [[spoiler:Meaning she's freaking riding her hair and kicking back while kicking your ass in her final form.]]
* ScaledUp: Her third form resembles a giant Medusa head.
* RapunzelHair
** PowerMakesYourHairGrow
* SequentialBoss
* ShoutOut: Her OneWingedAngel seems remarkably similar to the goddess statue boss of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI''.
** In addition, her overall design was reused from the Amano artwork of the Cloud of Darkness from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIII''.

Your initial antagonist in ''X-2'', leader of a rival group of sphere hunters.
* AbsoluteCleavage: And ''how''.
* [[spoiler:DefrostingIceQueen: About the time she realizes that Spira is in deep, deep shit again, she starts to soften up and ends up helping Yuna.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Sort of. When you last fight her, you receive the sphere that starts the ''real'' plot of the game. Up until that point, you were just hunting for spheres and beating up her henchmen.
* [[spoiler:HeelFaceTurn]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Who would have thought she [[spoiler:was taking in war victims and political refugees and letting them live with her in her BigFancyHouse?]]
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: She'll do ''anything'' for her "Noojie-woojie." [[spoiler:Too bad Nooj was at that point possessed by a vengeful spirit.]]
* TheRival
* ShoutOut: Almost assuredly to Doronjo, Boyacky, and Tonzra of ''Anime/{{Yatterman}}''.

->''"Share my despair!"''
--> Voiced by MasakazuMorita (Japanese) and JamesArnoldTaylor (English).
The antagonist of ''X-2'', more or less. [[spoiler:A thousand years ago, his girlfriend, Lenne, was a summoner in the war between Bevelle and Zanarkand. Trying to stop the war before she could be killed, Shuyin snuck into Bevelle to use their machina superweapon, Vegnagun, against them, but he was caught by the guards and shot to death alongside his beloved Lenne. Shuyin's soul was trapped as an Unsent in the Den of Woe, and he was forced to relive the image of his lover's death every day for one thousand years]]. Can you understand why he might be a little miffed?
* BodySurf: [[spoiler:He possessed Nooj, which caused him to fire on his friends (hence their breakup). Shuyin then lay dormant for a few years, until Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal meet up again, their mutual disgust of each other reawakening him and forcing him to jump to Baralai.]]
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: [[FateWorseThanDeath His torture?]] [[spoiler:He was subjected to watching his one true love be callously killed, in a loop, for '''''one thousand years'''''.]] [[StartOfDarkness Needless to say]], [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds he didn't take it too well]].
* EvilLaugh: In the Den of Woe.
* EvilTwin: Of Tidus. Also results in a PaletteSwap due to [[spoiler:how he fights in the FinalBattle. He is pretty much Tidus in every aspect; attack animations, critical HP animation, and even his super attacks are just copies of Tidus' Overdrives!]]
** Could also count as FridgeBrilliance, [[spoiler:since the Wall of Fayth were forced to "dream" of Zanarkand, Tidus might be their representation of Shuyin.]]

!!Baralai
-> ''"The world is changing, and there are many who are finding it difficult to keep up. New Yevon wishes to help those who feel lost in the winds of change."''
--> Voiced by KenjiSobu (Japanese) and JoshGomez (English).
Only appears in ''Final Fantasy X-2'', where he's risen to leadership of New Yevon.
* [[spoiler:GrandTheftMe: By Shuyin, after he [[BodySurf hops]] from Nooj.]]
* ShipTease: He has this with Yuna in an early scene and Paine, as seen in the [[spoiler:Crimson Spheres.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Subverted. He comes off as a rather suspicious figure with implications of the victorious [[TheStarscream Starscream]] kind when first introduced, and there's plenty of reason to think he's evil, [[spoiler:given that he fights the party in order to protect yet another one of [[CorruptChurch Bevelle's]] dark secrets, and his sphere also reveals that after the Crimson Squad fiasco, he sought help from ''Seymour'' of all people. However, later on, it becomes clear that Shuyin-possessed ''Nooj'' is the actual villain, and Baralai doesn't get around to his FaceHeelTurn until after Shuyin swipes his body]]. The ending makes it pretty clear that [[spoiler:he's one of the good guys, working for the betterment of Spira]].
!!Brother
->''"Who is the leader? I am! I give the orders around here!!"''
-->Voiced by TakayukiYamaguchi (Japanese) and DavidRasner (English).
Rikku's older brother. If he has a real name, it's never mentioned. He is seen piloting the party's airship in both games, but plays a larger role in ''X-2'' where he is part of the Gullwings.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: In a hidden X-2 cutscene, he comes to terms with Yuna not returning his feelings.
* CallingTheOldManOut: A subtle version: he and Rikku had a falling out with Cid in between the two games, so what do they do? They get their own airship, and its name is a jab at Cid's own. (Celsius to Fahrenheit, [[DontExplainTheJoke get it?]])
* TheCaptain: Rikku constantly finds herself wondering why he's in charge.
* ChivalrousPervert
* EightiesHair: Is that a mohawk?
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep
* FunnyForeigner
* GeniusDitz: You might not guess it, but he is [[GameBreaker really, really good at Blitzball]].
* KissingCousins: Has a massive unrequited crush on Yuna, going so far as to learn English (or whatever the common language on Spira is) so he can talk to her. Rikku is not amused.
* LargeHam: Not only does he shout, he flaps his arms and punches.
* WalkingShirtlessScene
* YouNoTakeCandle: His English in the first game ("Trust...me. Me...take you there. No problem...[[VerbalTic ya]]?")
!!Gippal
->''"Never been this close to a celebrity before..."''

* ShipTease: He's got it with both Yuna and Rikku (more so with the latter, especially considering he seems to come on a bit too strong for Yuna's taste).
* SpikyHair
!!Maechen
->''"And that, as they say, is that."''

* [[AvertedTrope O'aka]] [[AdamSmithHatesYourGuts Loves Your Guts]]: He really does! If you helped him early on (donate over 10,000 gil to him during his start up), he gives you major discounts and in general sells you way better equipment than the stores.

* SuspiciousVideoGameGenerosity: O'aka appears more than once just before a boss fight.

* ChildProdigy
* InsufferableGenius
* ShoutOut: Shinra should [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII ring a few bells]].
** Might be more than a ShoutOut: the [[WordOfGod Ultimania]] states that Shinra researched how to extract life energy from the Farplane as a power source, and after generations this would become the process of extracting Mako energy as seen in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII.''

!!Tromell Guado
-> ''''The Guado take care of Guado affairs."''

Seymour's right hand man and the apparent leader of the Guado city. He seems old and speaks in a panicky, stretched tone.

* DestroyTheEvidence: [[spoiler:Destroys Jyscal's sphere,]].
* GenreBlind: So very, very much.
* ImprobableHairstyle: Like with all Guado, Trommel's hair grows up, [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair is green]], and looks like tree roots. In fact, all of Trommel looks like a tree.
* LawfulStupid
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: States that he can't let the party escape because "Lord Seymour would never forgive us if we did," prevents them from [[spoiler:sending Seymour (indirectly enabling the massacre of the Ronso), and destroys the sphere proving that Seymour killed his father]] before sending the guards after them and reporting their actions.
* ReformedButRejected: At first, by ''himself'' as well as the Ronso.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: If you had just [[spoiler:let Yuna send Seymour into the Farplane and not destroyed the evidence of your master's actions]], you could have averted the almost complete genocide of your people.
!!Bahamut
A boy who became a fayth. His aeon form is the strongest of the mandatory summons. Acts as the leader and messenger for the rest of the fayth.

* AChildShallLeadThem
* CreepyChild: He has a habit of appearing out of nowhere, hooded, and saying cryptic things before just as mysteriously vanishing.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Appears in [[spoiler:Dream]] Zanarkand, as well as a couple of Tidus' dreams long before you find out who he is.
* InTheHood
* MrExposition: Reveals the truth about Yu Yevon.
* SpiritAdvisor
* TheSmartGuy: Comes up with the strategy for [[spoiler:defeating Sin permanently.]]
