!!Class Zero

[[folder:In General]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/97786be7650c2ab85593626ec38b8163.png]]
A special class within the Vermilion Peristylium assembled as a preemptive strike force in case the other three nations of Orience break the Pax Codex and set their sights upon Rubrum. Contrary to the rest of the students of the Academy, Class Zero is able to use magic in Crystal Jammer fields, nullifying the greatest weapon of Milites against the nation and making them a deciding factor in the war to defend Orience.

----
* AbusiveMom: Arecia raised them as {{Tykebomb}}s. The effects of Arecia's "parenting" are obvious in battle.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: The group is marginalized by most of the faculty and fellow students of the Peristylium, Class Zero in turn isolates Rem and Machina as outsiders and keeping them LockedOutOfTheLoop.
* BadassCape: Except for Seven, all of them wear some sort of red mantle around their necks.
* BadassCrew: They single-handedly turn the tide of the war; Rubrum's military strategy is pretty much "send in Class Zero," and it works.
* BandOfBrothers: They were all raised as brothers and sisters and are as close as blood relatives.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: The Consortium of Eight, Rubrum's government, view Class Zero as Arecia's "pets" and come to hate them over the course of the game. But they are Akademeia's best of the best, and are the only ones able to use magic in Crystal Jammer fields, so they're indispensable to the war effort.
* CastFullOfPrettyBoys: Machina, Ace, Nine, Trey, Jack, Eight and King are all rather handsome young men, although they vary in terms of looks: King and Nine are more [[{{Hunk}} hunky]], Jack and Eight are [[CuteBookworm cute and slightly nerdy]], and Ace, Machina and Trey are traditional ''Final Fantasy'' bishonens.
* ChildSoldiers: The latest foray into this theme since [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII the SeeD]]. Justified in that the Vermilion Bird Crystal can only grant [[ChildrenAreSpecial magic to the young]], which diminishes with age, though the Eight consider using them unethical.
* TheChosenOne: Each student is a part of Operation Apostle where he/she is striving to become the [[MessianicArchetype Agito]], who was prophesied to appear at "[[ApocalypseHow Finis]]". [[spoiler:As it turns out, [[BigGood Arecia]] [[TheChosenMany needs all 14 of them]] in order to accomplish this, and originally thought she needed 16 souls to do the trick.]]
* CodeName: All but Rem and Machina have no real names. They were originally going to, but the developers chose to only use the codenames. Since they were raised together by Arecia, they may well have forgotten their real names.
* DeathIsCheap: Thankfully, since Raise is an MP guzzler and Phoenix Downs are incredibly rare, entering a town will revive all fallen party members. [[spoiler:Arecia is behind this, keeping them alive since she needs them as part of her plan to avert Tempus Finis.]]
* FlatCharacter: Excluding Machina and Rem, the cadets of Class Zero have only a handful of core personality trait. [[spoiler:This is intentional -- Arecia groomed each of them to embody a specific trait of Agito, and focused their lives around their sense of duty and tasks and behaviors that draw back to their assigned traits.]]
* FlatWhat: Deciding to talk to the Tonberry between will have this reaction from all characters.
-->'''Machina:''' ''He-...hello.''
* GenderEqualEnsemble: Seven boys and seven girls. [[spoiler:Even including Tiz and Joker as part of Class Zero on a technicality keeps the group at an even gender ratio, though the possible additions of Naghi, Carla, Mutsuki, Quon, and Ryid shift the balance slightly in the men's favor.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: The principal objective of Operation Apostle is exactly this. [[spoiler:They succeed, though in the secret ending Arecia, impressed by their defiance of fate, pulls off a CosmicRetcon to [[EverybodyLives spare them their grim fate]] and [[EarnYourHappyEnding allow them to live as a happy, if sometimes wacky, class]].]]
* HyperspaceArsenal: They can each summon and dismisses their weapons from nothingness.
* InterserviceRivalry: Class Zero faces a lot of tension with the other branches of the Dominion Military and classes because their MilitaryMaverick tendencies and their fanatical loyalty to their mother the Archsorceress.
* OddNameOut: Machina and Rem. The meaning of Rem's name even alludes to it.
* OnlyOneName: Again, all but Machina and Rem.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: [[spoiler:As l'Cie.]]
* RedMage: As students of a WizardingSchool they all can use offensive, healing and support magic (in varying levels of proficiency). The Militesi even refer to them as 'red demons', which is somewhere between LampshadeHanging and RedBaron.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Of course, it ''is'' both a WizardingSchool and a MilitarySchool. [[NonUniformUniform Each one is slightly unique one way or another]].
* SummonMagic: Any character can summon a WarGod at [[CastFromHitPoints the expense of all his/her HP]], rendering him/her unusable for the rest of the mission.
* ThemeNaming: With the exception of Machina and Rem, all members of Class Zero have names with either a) a {{numerical theme|Naming}}, b) a {{playing card|Motifs}} or more general gambling motif, c) a combination of the two. For example, Ace, Deuce, Trey, Cater, Cinque, and Sice are named for [[https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/359339/sice-cinque-cater-trey-deuce-ace-and-then numbers 1-6 in a game of dice]] while Jack, Queen, and King are face cards, with Ace and the other number-based {{Code Name}}s also fitting into the overall playing card theme.
* TragicDream: [[spoiler:In the tie-in novel, all of them mention one, except Nine who can't think of anything. Ace wants to own a Chocobo ranch, Deuce to be a musician, Jack a comedian, Trey a scholar, Queen a teacher of traditional subjects rather than magic and weaponry, Cinque to travel the world, Cater to find love, Eight to become a competitive martial artist, Seven to make an orphanage for the children who lost their parents in the war, Sice to be a chef and King a police officer. Machina and Rem share a dream of rebuilding the country.]]
* TrueCompanions: [[spoiler:Unto the bitter end. They even [[HoldingHands hold hands]] as they die.]]
* WackyHomeroom: [[spoiler:In the secret ending.]]
* YouAreNumberSix: As an effect of the aforementioned NumericalThemeNaming. Specifically, Ace (un), Deuce (deux), Trey (trois/tres), Cater (quatre), Cinque (cinq), Sice ([[https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sice#Etymology_2 sice]]/six), Seven, Eight, and Nine.

[[folder:Machina Kunagiri]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fftype0_machinarender2.png]]
->'''Age:''' 17\\
'''Birthday:''' (Unknown)\\
'''Height:''' 175cm (5'9")\\
'''Weapon:''' Bolt Rapiers\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiroshiKamiya (Japanese) and Creator/BrycePapenbrook (English)

A transferee to Class Zero from Class Second (evidenced by his old navy-blue cape) and Rem's childhood friend, as well as her fellow lead character. He's the younger brother of Izana, the messenger who was killed in action while delivering orders to Class Zero. He has forgotten his brother initially but comes to remember him, and blames Class Zero for his death.
----
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:Judging by his guilt over indirectly contributing to the deaths of the Twelve, Machina took it upon himself to record their deeds.]]
* BadassCape: Special mention for being longer then the other students with a HighCollarOfDoom.
* BanOnMagic: Being a normal cadet who gets his magic from the Vermilion Bird Crystal rather than from phantoma like Arecia's children, he's affected by Militesi crystal jammers. [[spoiler:He's also prohibited from using magic while acting as Incognitus, though the game leaves it ambiguous whether it's the White Tiger Crystal stopping him or if he just chooses not to blow his cover.]]
* BladeSpam: His Awakening ability greatly ramps up the speed of his attacks to result in this.
* CastFromHitpoints: As per its standard in the series, the [[CastingAShadow Dark Side]] attack drains Machina's health to fire an orb of darkness.
* CoolSword: His dual rapiers.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Rem. [[spoiler:They are said to have lived HappilyEverAfter after the credits.]]
* DeclarationOfProtection: Deconstructed. [[spoiler:Of all his Class Zero classmates, he only trusts Rem, contributing to his desire to protect her. Along the way, he grows distant and accepts the power that grants him the strength for this purpose, but ironically loses his memories about her because of it. In the end, he's the one who kills her in his amnesia. Twisting the knife of irony further, the novel reveals that his desire to protect Rem stems from a subconscious need to atone for being forced to kill her after Gala possessed and transformed her into the Rursan Arbiter in a previous cycle, in the process having to absorb the Phantoma of the rest of Class Zero himself.]]
* DualWielding: Wields twin swords.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: According to Rem, Machina has an aversion towards spicy foods.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: [[spoiler:The Rubicus says that Machina was prevented from getting involved in any mission that was directly detrimental to the White Tiger. This despite the fact that you do any Expert Trial - up to and including Class Zero's ''invasion of the Azurr District'' - without getting Machina locked out.]]
* GiverOfLameNames: Izana thinks the name Machina gave towards a Chocobo "Chichiri" is weird.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:At the end of the credits roll, the narration reveals that 50 years after the end of Tempus Finis, having completed recording his fallen classmates' deeds and leading Orience to the DawnOfAnEra, 67-year-old Machina was said to have passed on with a smile in his face, his wife Rem by his side.]]
* HistoryRepeats: [[spoiler:If the novelization can be considered canonical, this wasn't the first time he killed Rem -- albeit one previous instance was a role reversal, in that it was ''Rem'' who was brainwashed into becoming the Rursan Arbiter.]]
* {{Keet}}: Shows some shades of this [[spoiler:in the secret ending -- with no dead Izana to drive a wedge between them, he and Ace are now best friends, and the former was last seen dragging off the latter from the library for some fun time.]]
* LifeDrain: His Siphon Sword attack drains HP to heal him..
* ManlyTears: [[spoiler:He completely breaks down after he and Rem find the rest of Class Zero dead from exhaustion after their battle against Cid/Gala, [[TearsOfRemorse bitterly apologizing to them]] for prejudging them for their inability to save Izana.]]
* MaskOfPower: [[spoiler:Qun'mi's helmet.]]
* MeaningfulName: Named after the phrase "DeusExMachina" -- "God out of the Machine". [[spoiler:This takes a whole new meaning once it is revealed that he and Rem are the key to breaking the near-endless cycle of destruction that has trapped Orience.]]
* MessianicArchetype: [[spoiler:In the normal ending, with the crystals weakening, he and Rem fill the large shoes their classmates left behind and lead Orience to a brave new world.]]
* MightyGlacier: His attacks are a bit slow but he hits hard.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:He reports directly the Consortium of Eight, keeping tabs on Class Zero and Arecia (who was one of their own). Later he also infiltrates Militesi forces as a White Tiger l'Cie, but his [[LaserGuidedAmnesia deteriorating memories]] caused by the l'Cie power make him [[BecomingTheMask loyal to the White Tiger Crystal]].]]
* NewTransferStudent: The newest addition to Class Zero alongside Rem.
* HeIsAllGrownUp: It had been seven years since he and Rem last saw each other and back then Machina was even shorter then her.
* SliceAndDiceSwordsmanship: Machina slashes an awful lot with his rapiers despite them not being edged weapons.
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: His Guardian Blades skill is this combined with ReverseShrapnel, creating several floating swords to attack enemies.
* SuperMode: His Awakening skill, which boosts his attack and movement speed until the ability gauge depletes.
* SwordAndSorcerer: The Sword to Rem's Sorcerer, being a physical fighter while Rem is a spellcaster.
* ReluctantWarrior: Outright [[WarIsHell fears and despises fighting and war]] -- the same violence that claimed his brother's life.
* ThisIsADrill: His swords also function as drills. Shown best in his Cyclone Drive attack, where he stabs them forward and drills into opponents until you let go of the button or run out of AG.
* YouKilledMyFather: His distrust of Class Zero stems from their involvement in the mission where Izana died. [[spoiler:This is the reason he volunteered to keep tabs on them and Arecia on behalf of the Commandant and later his brainwashing into becoming a White Tiger l'Cie.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rem Tokimiya]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fftype0_remrender2.png]]
->'''Age:''' 17\\
'''Birthday:''' (Unknown)\\
'''Height:''' 160cm (5'3")\\
'''Weapon:''' Twin Daggers\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/RyokoShiraishi (Japanese) and Peyton [=McCormick=] (English)

The other lead character together with her childhood friend Machina and, like him, a transferee, in her case from Class Seventh (indicated by her old pink cape). Conflicted with Machina's headfirst jump to self-destruction and her loyalty to her nation, Rem is also stricken with some sort of illness that is sapping her strength.
----
* AutoRevive: Undying Wish places this on the whole party for a short time, this makes her indespensible on Eidiolon heavy strategies.
* BanOnMagic: She's a mundane cadet whose magic is directly tied to the Vermilion Bird Crystal, so Milites' crystal jammers will take her out of commission. If she's on the Militesi front during the Clash on Big Bridge, she can't be deployed until after the jammer has been deactivated.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Machina. [[spoiler:They are said to have lived HappilyEverAfter at the end of the normal ending.]]
* DanceBattler: With a weapon named Dancing Dagger, it's no surprise really. Her attack patterns include a lot of flipping and spinning.
* DualWielding: She fights using identical pairs of daggers.
* DudeMagnet: She has a lot of admirers in the Academy for both her looks and her kind personality.
* HairColorDissonance: Depending on the lighting, her light brown hair can range from light purple or red, to almost black.
* HolyHandGrenade: Seraphim Strike is basically an on-command ''Mega Flare'' that can and will hit the damage cap on anything less than [your level - 5].
* KillSat: Has one in the skill Seraphim Strike.
* LightEmUp: Siphon Sphere manifests as a glowing ball of light.
* ManaDrain: Her special attacks Siphon Sphere and Siphon Delta.
* MeaningfulName: Her kanji comes from "rei" and "mu", meaning "Not Zero".
* NecessaryDrawback: Rem is by far, ''the'' most powerful mage in the game. To balance her out, she's one of the affected whenever Milites deploys their crystal jammer.
* NewTransferStudent: Along with Machina, she's new to Class Zero.
* PoorCommunicationKills: [[spoiler:When she volunteered to become a l'Cie, she has to fight a particularly dangerous White Tiger l'Cie. The catch: that l'Cie is Machina, and they don't recognize each other due to the latter's brainwashing and the mask and full-body uniform disguising him. She's so close from winning but for Machina's mask slipping off and distracting her.]]
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: Her Dagger Boomerang Dagger skill.
* SheFu: Does a lot of acrobatic motions with her attacks.
* SilkHidingSteel: She looks weak and delicate, but she's most certainly not.
* SquishyWizard: She moves fast and has ''the'' best magic stats of all 14 characters, ranking highest in all four schools of magic as well as MP growth. However, her HP, Strength and Defense are terrible.
* SwordAndSorcerer: The Sorcerer to Machina's Sword, focusing on spellcasting while he's a physical fighter.

[[folder:Ace]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fftype0_acerender2.png]]
->'''Age:''' 16\\
'''Birthday:''' Terramens X, R.G. 825 (7/10/825)\\
'''Height:''' 168cm (5'6")\\
'''Weapon:''' Cards\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YuukiKaji (Japanese) and Jonathon [=McClendon=] (English)

A boy who leads Class Zero, He is calm and withdrawn but with an underlying childlike passion. While most others in Orience completely forget the dead, Ace is at least able to remember them enough to mourn.
----
* BadassBookworm: When controlling any other character inside Academia, he can be sometimes seen at the Crystarium (other times at the Ready Room or the chocobo stables Izana used to frequent). He is also one of three to have memorized the Nameless Tome in its entirety. [[spoiler:In the secret ending, he was last seen studying for semestral exams before being dragged by Machina out of the Library to walk around.]]
* ChekhovsGun: Ace's Rubicus entry reveals that on occasion he can be heard humming a song taught to him by Arecia. [[spoiler:It turns out to be the first two lines of "Zero" (the game's theme song), which he sings to comfort his classmates distressed at the prospects of death in the normal ending.]]
* DecoyProtagonist: The game's poster boy and the leader of Class Zero, as well as the first playable Classmate upon a New Game. That being said, Type-0's EnsembleCast means he's no more or less significant than any of his classmates.
* DeathDealer: His weapons are playing cards.
* TheEmpath: Of all the members of Class Zero, only he has a longer sense of retention regarding the recently-deceased, which explains why was able to mourn Izana after he was forced to watch him die.
* EnergyWeapon: When using his Jackpot Shot skill, he fires a large laser blast. Jackpot Triad fires three at once.
* FlashStep: His basic evasive maneuver shows him teleporting in a flash of his card.
* FlechetteStorm: He attacks by shooting his cards out five or more at a time.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Ace has a soft spot for chocobos. Besides serving as a tangible memory of Izana, the Rubicus reveals that [[spoiler:as a child he used to raise a chocobo chick abandoned by its mother, which died of illness shortly after that]].
* TheGambler: As shown by his Cut Cards ability, which draws four cards which each do a random effect. He gets other abilities that do the same with increased likelihood of certain effects, such as Attack Hand which is more likely to deal damage to enemies. He also has a few [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI Gabbiani-esque]] casino lines that you'll probably miss if you keep him active during your free time.
* GlassCannon: He deals a lot of damage and is pretty fast, but has poor HP.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Among all of Class Zero, he's notably the only one who takes something that isn't a real weapon and ''hits'' people with it.
* TheLeader: A type IV, being the one who keeps the class together, actively or not.
* InnocentProdigy: Said to be mature but at the same time childish.
* LeeroyJenkins: Said to be prone to recklessness.
* LongRangeFighter: His cards can strike from range, though he can learn melee attacks with them too.
* ManlyTears: Shed these for Izana after watching him die a miserable death.
* MusicForCourage: [[spoiler:In the normal ending, as they face their death, Ace comforts his classmates by singing the first two lines of "Zero".]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Ace was the one to recommend Izana be involved in the top-secret mission due to the latter mentioning how useless he feels in the war. Meaning Ace was responsible for his first friend's death. Made even worse because, thanks to Orience's crystals, he forgets until he overhears it being discussed.
* PrettyBoy: In the novel, the first thing Izana notices is that Ace is pretty enough to be a girl.
* SimpleYetAwesome: Ace is one of the more beginner friendly characters to use alongside Nine and Queen, and continues to stay consistently powerful throughout the game.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: As evidenced in [[spoiler:the secret ending]].
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Like all Class Zero, Ace was raised to be a weapon and can be standoffish and rather blunt with other people and outright cold on the battlefield. But he's sweet-natured and genuinely cares about his friends and has a soft spot for Chocobos.
* SurvivorGuilt: Helplessly watching Izana die a miserable death left a traumatic mark upon the boy. There are times where he frequents the chocobo stables where Izana, a knowledgeable chocobo breeder, once worked. Thanks to Orience's Crystals erasing memories of people who died, Ace knows someone ''should'' be there but he can't consciously remember who or why.
* ThemeNaming: His abilities are all named based on playing card terminology.
* WistfulAmnesia: He retains just a bit of memory about the deceased, in a world where others will forget about them completely (or, in rare cases like Kurasame's, remember them with extreme effort). It's not enough to put a name to a fallen comerade, but it's enough to mourn them.
* YouAreTooLate: Fails to rendezvous with Izana quick enough, leading to his untimely demise.

[[folder:Deuce]]
[[quoteright:175:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fftype0_deucerender2.png]]
->'''Age:''' 16\\

'''Height:''' 158cm (5'2")\\
'''Weapon:''' Flute\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KanaHanazawa (Japanese) and Bryce Hitchcock (English)

A plucky girl who uses her flute as a weapon. The youngest member of Class Zero, she is kind-hearted and good-natured even if she can be a bit stubborn.
----
* AlwaysAccurateAttack: Attacking with her flute sends out slow moving musical blasts that constantly home in on the enemy until it hits.
* BadassAdorable: Deuce is a very cute girl who's capable of providing powerful support with her music.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Even Sice notes that she's kinda scary when pissed off.
* TheCutie: She is definitely this among Class Zero.
* DifficultButAwesome: Deuce is fairly tricky to use, with her attacks being quite unconventional, but she provides incredible support and utility, and is one of the best mages in the game, second only to Rem.
* MagicMusic: Uses her flute music to attack and buff the party.
* MusicalAssassin: Fights using her flute music.
* GirlPosse: [[spoiler:In the secret ending she is part of a clique with Cinque and Queen, discussing a possible romance between Ace and Mutsuki.]]
* GoThroughMe: Bodily puts herself between Ace and Celestia as the latter summons her beast to attack the former. Fortunately, Celestia pulls her punch back.
* PlayingWithFire: Deuce is very good with fire magic, and gives her some offensive potential.
* PluckyGirl: Deuce is quite stubborn once she sets her mind to something, and cannot be swayed.
* ShipTease: The Rubicus reveals that she finds Ace's singing voice ''beautiful'', and would very much like to perform a duet with him.
* SquishyWizard: She has some of the worst physical stats in the game, but has the highest MP pool next to Rem and is good with fire and support magic.
* SupportPartyMember: Fighting alone she doesn't seem that strong, but in a party she can wreak a lot of havoc. That said, she should ''not'' be underestimated when playing as her.
* StatusBuff: Her Concerto and Crescendo abilities that grant bonuses like Protect, Trance and Aura.
* TrapMaster: Can set sound traps with certain musical scales.

'''Height:''' 184cm (6'0")\\
'''Weapon:''' Longbow\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YuuichiNakamura (Japanese) and Creator/MatthewMercer (English)

A blond boy who serves as the Class's archer. He's calm and well-mannered, but can be chatty.
----
* BadassBookworm: One of three to have memorized the Nameless Tome in its entirety
* BottomlessMagazines: Unlimited arrows from hammerspace. [[Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick They just sort of appear in his hand when he needs one.]]
* CharacterFilibuster: He tends to be the most talkative of the cast, and talks at length too.
* CrossHairAware: When using his Hawkeye skill to attack from range.
* GlassCannon: He can put out some serious damage from afar, but unlike other ranged attackers like Ace and King, he doesn't have any way to defend himself up close.
* InsufferableGenius: Oh, ''Etro'', listen to this guy. He will talk at length on ''any'' subject given a moment's silence, [[DownplayedTrope although he falls quiet]] when his teammates point out that they don't have time for it. During [[spoiler:Ace's dream fake-out during the ending]], his lecture gets Sice screaming loud enough to be heard from across Classroom Zero.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: At some point, he manages to snipe a ''sniper'' from ''4000 meters'' away, ''while it's snowing'', with a '''bow'''.
* LongRangeFighter: Attacks from range with his bow.
* NoArcInArchery: Straight-line arrows give him a longer range than Cater's [[RayGun Magicite Pistol]].
* OneHitPolykill: Max out his charge, and he can take out up to ''five'' Colossus units with one shot during an RTS Expert Trial - and without surpassing the recommended level, what's more.
* RainOfArrows: His Raining Arrows special attack.
* ShownTheirWork: He wears a ''mitsugake'', a three-fingered glove used to protect an archer's hand from the bowstring.
* TrickArrow: He can change his arrows to change the style of his attacks.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: So he'd like to think. However, this only extends to book smarts. His long-winded {{Character Filibuster}}s isn't always in-topic with what he was previously trying to explain and often off-railing quickly. The fact that his classmates are mostly annoyed by these makes it pretty clear that he actually pretty dense in these kind of things. The Rubicus reveals that [[spoiler:Arecia encouraged his thirst for knowledge as a child]].

'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MinoriChihara (Japanese) and Kristen Klabunde (English)

A perky girl who carries a backpack at all times and wields an antique pistol said to still pack a punch. She has a confident and direct personality.
----
* AmnesiaLoop: [[spoiler:She is the only one who feels that the Class Zero has went through same events all over again as the result of Arecia's CosmicRetcon. She confides her feelings of deja vu to Queen and Arecia, though the latter told her not to think too much about it.]]
* BookDumb: Rules out the possibility of her deja vu of Milites being from reading about it in the Crystarium on the grounds that "I'm not Queen, I don't read stuff." [[spoiler:When she appears in the secret ending, she's en route to a make-up test]].
* BottomlessMagazines: Justified that the gun uses MagicBullets.
* ChargedAttack: Can delay attacking to store up magic to fire a stronger blast.
%%* DontThinkFeel: She has this philosophy.
* FieryRedHead: She has red hair and a very energetic temperament.
* FragileSpeedster: Cater is very fast and remains mobile even when firing her gun, but she has the lowest Strength stat in the game, and is very fragile.
* GenkiGirl: Very energetic and excitable.
* HotBlooded: Cater will GLADLY join in the fight if there's fighting to be done. When Nine provokes Kurasame, she's the first one to draw her weapon and fire at him.
* LongRangeFighter: Fights from range with her gun.
* MageMarksman: Her Magitek Pistol can fire bursts of energy, which can be imbued with elemental properties with her Elementillary skill.
* PoisonedWeapons: Her Viral Spray attack blasts a poisonous mist from her gun.
* PowerCrystal: Her gun gets its juice from a crystal in her backpack.
* ShipTease: With Eight, which goes way back since childhood. [[spoiler:The secret ending also shows them accidentally running and stumbling into each other.]]

'''Weapon:''' Mace\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkiToyosaki (Japanese) and Creator/CristinaValenzuela (English)

A strange girl with an equally strange mental process, who uses an oddly shaped mace. Her unusual personality and unpredictable actions tend to cause others to stay away from her.
----
* AffectionateNickname: She has them for many of the characters.
* AlreadyMetEveryone: [[spoiler:Her third Rubicus entry reveals that as a child she had the feeling that she already met her classmates in some distant past.]]
* BadassAdorable: Watch her act around like a child one minute, then blow away her enemies with her heavy mace the next.
* BlowYouAway: Her Whirling Mace skills fires a tornado at enemies.
* CarryABigStick: Fights with a massive mace.
* ChargedAttack: Her Homerun Swing and Focus.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Try imagining her running around the room in presence of Queen Andoria when her classmates are kneeling because she doesn't really know where she has to kneel. There you go.
* CuteBruiser: She's an adorable girl who wields one of the heaviest weapons of the cast.
* CuteClumsyGirl: It's even shown in her gameplay where she trips over her weapon. An idle animation she has involved her lifting up her skirt and fixing her underwear after collecting Anima. This is either a careless moment done in public or [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl Cinque not caring that she is flashing others and the audience.]] In general, she is also more prone to {{PantyShot}}s than the other girls because of her fighting style.
* DeathIsASadThing: [[spoiler:Breaks down crying in the ending as she and the rest of Class Zero await their deaths.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: Cinque isn't a very beginner friendly character. Her slow movement and attack speed make it quite tricky to get close to the enemy and land Breaksights and Killsights, but she has very high damage potential, and has access to a very potent stun that hits a wide area.
* DishingOutDirt: Her special skill is Earthquake.
* {{Expy}}: Her hairstyle and eye color is reminiscent of Aerith's.
* GlacierWaif: She has the same slim build as most of her classmates, but in gameplay she's a MightyGlacier, owing to her unconventional choice of weapon.
* ImplacableMan: Few of her passive skills make her immune to knockback when attacking, which is incredibly useful for her to consistently land Breaksights and Killsights due to her very slow attack speed.
* {{Kiai}}: Has one as a special ability.
* ManChild: For the second-youngest member of the Class, she's very childish (even moreso than Deuce, who's barely a month her junior). Giving Mog a nickname and her speaking tone comes to mind.
* MightyGlacier: She deals a lot of damage and the second-best Strength, but is very slow to move and attack.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Being a wisp of a girl doesn't stop her from swinging a weapon that looks like it weighs just as much as she does.
* SimpleMindedWisdom: At times she surprises her classmates with her spot-on remarks, though most of the time she has no idea of what just came out of her mouth.

'''Height:''' 166cm (5'5")\\
'''Weapon:''' Scythe\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MiyukiSawashiro (Japanese) and Corri English (English)

A tomboyish girl who wields a scythe in battle. She is not skilled with words, but has good judgment.
----
* AttackAttackAttack: Her playstyle actively encourages jumping in the fight and killing as many enemies as possible to build up malice.
* BlowYouAway: Death Maelstrom, which like the rest of Sice's attacks is combined dark magic.
* BloodKnight: She usually the first one who suggests the most brutal method in everything, dislike recon missions and rather going to the frontlines, and ''extremely'' revels the battle.
-->'''Sice:''' Let's murderize 'em!
* BrilliantButLazy: She turns out to be this in a classroom event, where she easily answers a question by Kurasame despite sleeping.
* CastingAShadow: All of her special attacks are dark magic that is powered by absorbing energy from her slain foes.
* CombatStilettos: The only member of the class to wear heeled boots.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She's just as heroic as the other members of Class Zero despite fighting with dark attacks.
* DifficultButAwesome: While she's not as technical as the likes of Cinque or Jack, Sice's attack strings are rather inconsistent, making proper positioning a must to maintain her scythe's malice, not to mention having to keep dodging attacks to maintain said malice.
* EmotionEater: She grows more powerful the more enemies she defeats, which is explained as her scythe absorbing their malice.
* GoodIsNotNice: Her tongue may well be sharper than her scythe, and she's not afraid to tell her classmates ''exactly'' what she thinks of them. During Chapter 4, she admits that if [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness a stressed-out and snappy Queen]] hadn't told off Machina for his getting angry at the Class, she would have.
* GlacierWaif: Isn't the quickest fighter but has some attacks that help her stay mobile.
* GravityMaster: Her [[SwirlyEnergyThingy Black Hole]] special attack.
* HotForTeacher: Has a big crush on Kurasame. [[spoiler:In the secret ending, LoveLetterLunacy ensues and she accidentally presents the letter to Seven.]]
* IneffectualLoner: [[spoiler:As a child she was reluctant to join in on Class Zero's activities, but secretly comes to admire their abilities, inspiring her to try to fit in.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Sice is noted to be the harshest and most stern of Class Zero, with a rather bleak outlook on life that would make Darwin proud, but deep down she cares for her classmates and fears losing them.
* PunnyName: ''Sice'' wields a ''scythe'' in battle.
* SinisterScythe: Fights with a massive scythe and uses dark-elemental attacks empowered by fallen foes.
* {{Tomboy}}: The most overt one of the group.

'''Height:''' 170cm (5'7")\\
'''Weapon:''' Whipblade\\
'''Voiced by:''' Mayuko Aoki (Japanese) and Njarra Townsend (English)

A lady who wields a chain-whip. While her expressions are somewhat cold, befitting the oldest member of Class Zero, she is kind and good-natured.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: Her Rubicus profile mentions that she gets along well with female underclassmen, but the boys are put off by her. [[spoiler:In the secret ending, when Sice accidentally presents her a love letter meant for Kurasame, she is flustered but not opposed to the idea of Sice being in love with her.]]
* CoolBigSis: To her underclassmen and, to a lesser extent, her fellow Class Zero cadets.
* DeadpanSnarker: She can be quite sassy and snarky, especially when she's talking to Jack.
* TheEmpath: Seven has the ability to sense a person's true feelings just by reading his/her body language
* {{Expy}}: She has a slight resemblance to [[Characters/FinalFantasyXIII Lightning]], but it's mostly in appearance and not really in personality.
* InstantKnots: It's unclear if her Snakebite ability is this trope or just a sharp impalement, but the end result is the same; her enemy is not going anywhere.
-->''"Going somewhere?"''
* JackOfAllStats: She, like Queen, has fairly balanced stats, and her combat style allows for good versatility.
* LadyOfWar: Graceful and poised as she whirls her whip around.
* LongRangeFighter: Sort of. Her whipblade gives her the longest melee attacking range out of all the melee characters.
* MistakenMessage: [[spoiler:In the secret ending, Sice mistakenly presents her with a love letter meant for Kurasame. Seven doesn't seem terribly opposed to the idea.]]
* ModestyShorts: A good thing considering all the SheFu she relies on, or else the boys of Class Zero would have no mysteries left with her; one of her moves even involves a handstand with her skirt falling down appropriately.
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: According to her profile, which she doesn't mind seeing that she apparently is more into fellow girls.
* SheFu: She does a lot of flipping and spinning to whirl her whip around, including a one-hand headstand.
* {{Spellblade}}: Her Elementalash attack can hit enemies with elemental damage.
* StatuesqueStunner: Seven is the tallest female character in Class Zero at 170 cm and also just 2 cm below the line. She is also the second tallest female character in the game.
* WhipSword: Though it's more of a sword-like whip than a sword that becomes a whip.

A boy who fights with punches and kicks. He's not a fan of weapons which take people's lives, so he chooses to fight hand-to-hand.
----
* ActionCommands: His 'Stance' attacks run on them.
* BadassAdorable: He's a cute boy who packs quite the punch with his fists.
* BareFistedMonk: Has a lot of martial arts tropes to go with 'em.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' mention how short he is, or he'll show you just how strong he can be.
* CastFromHitPoints: His Sacrificial Slug skill, which reduces his HP to 1 to deal massive damage to a single foe.
* EndearinglyDorky: Outside battle he's quite a lovable, clumsy kid.
* KungFuWizard: Dominion magic + strong dislike of weapons = Red Mage Monk.
* LightningBruiser: He moves and hits fast and does a lot of damage. However, he lacks ranged attacks, so he has to rely on magic to hit from afar.
* NiceGuy: Eight is a calm-headed, mellow friend outside battle.
* OnlySaneMan: Whenever he's in the same cutscene as Carla, he finds himself befuddled by her antics.
* PowerFist: His Explosive Fist, which is pretty much ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: His default combo during his Swiftwind Stance would put [[VideoGame/PunchOut Little Mac]] to shame
* {{Shoryuken}}: Can do one as a combo finisher.
* SupernaturalMartialArts: His 'stance' attacks have a lot of less-than-martial martial artistry.
* ShipTease: The Rubicus indicates he's been flirting with Cater for ages. [[spoiler:The secret ending quells any doubts.]]
* TechnicalPacifist: He refuses to fight using conventional weapons, so instead Arecia gave him a pair of duster knuckles and metal-sole boots.

'''Height:''' 185cm (6'1")\\
'''Weapon:''' Spear\\
'''Voiced by:''' Creator/DaisukeOno (Japanese) and Creator/OrionAcaba (English)

A brash guy who wields a lance. He has a skill set like the Dragoon job class from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' games past.
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: [[spoiler:To Emina in the secret ending -- he's last seen angrily hurling his spear and is clearly torn between fuming and crying.]]
* AwesomeButImpractical: Two of his abilities are described as superior to less-expensive ones and end up falling into this trope. Jump has Nine leap towards the enemy and come down lance-first, whereas High Jump has him manually aim and leap high into the air, coming down on where he'd aimed. Javelin Throw has him hurl his lance at his target, and Laser Lance has him turn his lance into a penetrating beam and hurl it forward. Both of the 'superior' abilities disregard whether or not he's locked on to something, and the delay between activation and strike is more than enough for anything that can move to get out of the way if he's unlucky.
* BookDumb: He is quite blatantly the worst-performing Classmate Zero, but he's quick to point out that sending '''all''' the cadets and trainees to Judecca leaves Big Bridge vulnerable unless they've got something big. He also gets a conversation during a free period in which he takes a surprisingly close look at the Crystal-induced LaserGuidedAmnesia regarding the dead. Furthermore, most of his situational quotes are not "I think we should do this", like Cinque, but rather "we need to do this".
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: He is said to hold this viewpoint.
* DeathFromAbove: Based on a dragoon he naturally uses a lot of Jump attacks.
* DumbMuscle: He's pretty strong, but he's also pretty stupid.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII Snow Villiers]], down to sharing [[Creator/DaisukeOno the same voice actor]].
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Nine is noted to be the least intelligent of Class Zero. Fittingly, he's also a MagicallyIneptFighter.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Of the cool, good variety.
* AGoodWayToDie: [[spoiler:As Class Zero awaits their death after defeating Cid, Nine tries in vain to comfort himself by noting that at the very least they are all dying victorious.]]
* HotBlooded: He's brash, rude, and is more than eager to rush to battle head-on.
* InASingleBound: Being based on a Dragoon, he of course has access to Jump and High Jump.
* IdiotHero: His RunningGag is trying to prove he's a (insert adjective) person by naming all four Crystal-States of Orience, only to be told that doing that won't make him (insert adjective). And when he asked to do just that, he only names ''three'', and he ''gets the names wrong''.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As much as he often finds himself at loggerheads with his classmates (and even Kurasame) for his rash, disrespectful attitude, Nine will not hesitate to rush to their defense in a heartbeat.
* {{Kiai}}: Has a skill called Primal Roar that can stop enemies.
* LightningBruiser: Although his magical skills suffer greatly in compensation, he moves quickly enough, helped by Jump attacks to close distance, and has good HP and defense.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: He's a powerful physical fighter, but he sucks with all kinds of magic.
* MessyHair: His hair is rather unkempt.
* OddFriendship: With the quiet, cool-headed King.
* SimpleYetAwesome: Nine is one of the more beginner friendly characters to use alongside Ace and Queen, and his moveset is simple and straightforward, and his high physical stats ensure he stays relevant throughout the game.
* SliceAndDiceSwordsmanship: With his Whirling Lance skill especially.
* VerbalTic: Nine often ends his sentences with "hey" or "yo!"

'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KenichiSuzumura (Japanese) and Cameron Covell (English)

A katana-wielder who always wears a smile and is able to make wise-cracks easily. In dangerous surroundings he encourages his peers to take it easy.
----
* BladeSpam: His Lightning Flash skill.
* CastFromHitPoints: His Transcience skill, which reduces his own HP to 1.
* CounterAttack: His two skills, Reflex and Tranquility, and one of the reasons Jack is a very technical character. Reflex has a small window to counter attacks, and deals high damage, and Tranquility has a ''very'' small window to counter, but deals absolutely ''massive'' damage to anyone unlucky enough to trigger it.
* DifficultButAwesome: Jack is ''not'' a beginner friendly character. He moves very slowly when his weapon is drawn, even slower than Cinque, and his abilities aren't as straightforward as other characters, but when used right, he becomes a beast in battle, capable of killing anything with a single slash of his katana.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Franchise/KingdomHearts Demyx]], down to sharing [[Creator/KenichiSuzumura the same voice actor]].
* GlassCannon: His inability to combo his attacks means that you land the hit or die for trying.
* HiddenDepths: One of his Rubicus entries explains that he's as cheerful as he is because he decided it was his job to keep everyone's spirits up, but he's actually calm, evident in his fighting style, which requires a lot of concentration to get the timing right for counterattacks.
* IaijutsuPractitioner: The way he draws his katana during the cinematic before the Qun'mi fight invokes this. If one of his counter moves is used before drawing his weapon, he uses the same motion.
* ISurrenderSuckers: His special attack Reflex functions as a fakeout then strike.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: His weapon of choice is a two-handed katana.
* {{Keet}}: Among Class Zero he is the most cheerful, mood-making member.
* MightyGlacier: Does a lot of damage but moves and attacks slowly.
* NiceGuy: Jack is cheerful and also quite friendly towards others.
* StepfordSmiler: As cheerful as he is, Seven noticed that he barely laughs to his own jokes.

* BewareTheQuietOnes: She's calm and collected for as long as the situation allows it. If the situation doesn't allow it, she will flip her... [[UnusualEuphemism sword]].[[note]]If she's downed when wearing the Lucid Lenses, Queen turns into a murderous berserker with a ReverseGrip.[[/note]]

* CharacterTic: Notable for only being present in her combat animations; Queen often fixes or dusts off her skirt after dodging or attacking.
* ClassRepresentative: Not officially so and she will deny it if you call her that, but her attitude and role fit anyway.
* CoolSword: Fights with a longsword.
* EmpathicHealer: Her Magic Martyr ability which sacrifices her HP to replenish her and her allies' MP.
* {{Expy}}: She looks like [[VideoGame/{{Persona 4}} Yukiko Amagi]] (plus she has the same voice actor) and shares a smiliar role and weapon to [[VideoGame/{{Persona 3}} Mitsuru Kirijo]].
* EvilLaugh: Lets out quite a chilling one when in her berserk form.
* FlashStep: Her Speedrush ability.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: See SuperpoweredEvilSide.
* JackOfAllStats: All of her stats err to the middle among the 14 characters, and she has decently balanced speed and abilities.
* LadyOfWar: She is very graceful and acrobatic in battle.
* LightEmUp: Her special skills are based on light magic.
* OneHitPointWonder: Her berserk form when wearing the Lucid Lenses grants her temporary invicibility, but soon inflicts Killsight on her.
* ReverseGrip: If she's downed while wearing her Lucid Lenses, she goes berserk and flips her sword to a backhanding whirlwind.
* SliceAndDiceSwordsmanship: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]. Queen wields a longsword, but uses it in a rapier style that involves a lot of thrusting instead of slashing with the blade. [[spoiler:At least unless she goes into her berserker state, when she wields it in a backhand grip and puts the edge to more use.]]
* ShockAndAwe: She has a fairly high affinity towards lightning magic.
* ShoutOut: ReverseGrip on a bladed weapon when outright insane? [[Characters/KingdomHeartsOrganizationXIII Hmm...]]
* SimpleYetAwesome: Queen is quite beginner friendly, alongside Ace and Nine, and her straightforward attacks and versatile moveset allow her to be relevant throughout the game.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Goes into this when KO’d with Janus' Glasses[=/=]Lucid Lenses equipped.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Her test scores are often better than Trey's.
* ThePaladin: Uses light-themed special abilities and fights with a sword.

A young man who wields a pair of revolvers and possesses a mature and composed demeanor. He looks cold, yet he's actually kind.
----
* AnIcePerson: While he isn't exactly the best, his main magic affinity is towards ice.
* BadassBack: When posing with the other students, he's the only one with his back to the camera.
* TheBigGuy: He's the tallest one among Class Zero.
* BottomlessMagazines: Averted, his guns have limited ammo and the game keeps count, when they're out he needs to pause and reload them. Abilities increase the clip size and let him fire one gun at a time while he reloads the other rather than stopping entirely. Played straight with the fact that King has ''countless'' magazines, so him stopping to reload amounts to having to pause every dozen shots or so (and messing up his Magazine Blast if he has less than three shots left).
* BoringButPractical: His Melee Attack is a kick. Comes out surprisingly fast, doesn't take from his shot count, and knocks down anyone on foot, which puts them at the perfect range for his Point-Blank Shot,
* DepletedPhlebotinumShells: His Point-Blank Shot special.
* {{Determinator}}: Represents the value of Resolve in the class, and even has an ability called Iron Will that, used correctly, prevents him from being KO'd.
* DifficultButAwesome: Learn to master his reloading mechanic, and King becomes a insane damage monster, rapidly mowing down enemies no matter the distance.
* GlassCannon: King has the highest literal DPS out of all the ranged characters, and can maintain it even up close, but he has the lowest Defense out of all the 14 characters.
* GunsAkimbo: Fights with a pair of {{Handguns}}. The Rubicus reveals this was originally intended to use the "New York Reload" version of the trope (physical bullets means physical magazines which means reload time, therefore multiple guns mean more shots fired between reloads), but by the time of the game he's gone all the way up to a [[Series/{{Mythbusters}} rocking horse of death]].
* MoreDakka: His Endless Waltz skill rapidly unloads both guns at an enemy.
* EightiesHair: That mullet is outright badass.
* FaceOfAThug: Beneath his gruff exterior lies one of Class Zero's kindest cadets.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: For a certain value of pretty.
* LongRangeFighter: Naturally, as a gun user.
* OddFriendship: With the brash, hot-headed Nine.
* NotSoStoic: He sometimes will jump headfirst into a situation without a second thought.
* TheStoic: He's the most calm and logical member of Class Zero, in contrast to his good friend Nine.
* TeamMom: Having a mature facade doesn't really hinder him, the second-oldest student of Class Zero (as well as its oldest boy), from fretting over his comrades' wellbeing and is sometimes better at defusing internal tension than [[ClassRepresentative Queen]]. Not to mention he's very gentle and considerate, compared to Queen's standoffish, almost cold approach to team dynamics. For what it's worth, Queen really appreciates his efforts.
* ThrowDownTheBomblet: With his Magazine Blast special attack.

----
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: The Blue Mage mocks those in Akademeia who believe the claims of Class Zero being assassins and get upset over it. Ze has to deal with pyromaniacs, kids with obsessive spellcasting disorder, a paranoid bomber who thinks everyone's out to pick on her...
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: The Blue Mage is in charge of Class Twelfth, which is home to Akademeia's {{Cloudcuckoolander}}s. By the time ze can get hir cadets organized, the other cadets are already out on the field.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: The Ninja puts on a foolish front and claims hir class is full of lazy fools... but Class Ninth is in fact a class of masters at subterfuge.
* FetchQuest: The Thief asks Class Zero to recover lost Knowing Tags; ze'll reward them based on how many they hand over at once.
* ForScience: The Machinist is devoted to Akademeia's research; when Classmates Eleventh get killed [[spoiler:at the Battle of Big Bridge]], ze is more concerned about their lack of organization resulting in confusion at the Armoury than anything.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** The Knight rather dislikes Class Zero for robbing Class First of their position as top class in Akademeia, but makes it clear that ze has nothing against the Class' cadets themselves. In addition, ze'll give Class Zero rewards based on how long they've spent exploring Orience.
** The Dragoon is outright insulting towards Class Zero, giving them nicknames like "Class Zilch" or "Class Nada". However, Machina being an ex-Classmate Second, ze wishes him luck for his new class.
* MediumAwareness: The Knight gives Class Zero prizes based on how long they've spent exploring Orience... as measured by the playtime hours registered to the console user. Starting a new save file will reward all the prizes received on the old one in as quick succession as one has the patience for.
* MythologyGag: Aside from their job classes, their name "Cranberry Knights" is a reference to [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIII the Onion Knights]].
* ThePowerOfFriendship: The Monk is a firm believer in this, although the cadets all mock hir for it.
* StrawNihilist: The Red Mage is convinced that nobody is going to come out of the war alive. [[spoiler:Which makes it all the more heartbreaking when one discovers hir prediction has come true [[StableTimeLoop six hundred million times and then some]].]]

Head of Rubrum's Sorcery Division, Arecia is seen as something of a sorceress. She is the "Mother" of Class Zero, and they are directly loyal to her.
----
* AbusiveMom: She raises Class Zero as {{Tykebomb}}s. [[spoiler:Justified in that they ''are'' living weapons to begin with.]]
* BigGood: In a way, since she's the Mother of Class Zero. [[spoiler:More so since she opposes Gala and is attempting to open Etro's Gate without using millions of deaths to do it.]]
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: [[spoiler:Her "children" are pretty much experiments meant to bring about Agito and she has gone through over ''six million'' cycles to get the result she wants. Justified in that she's not human to begin with.]]
* CastingGag: Creator/AtsukoTanaka has already played another ''Final Fantasy'' witch, ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII VIII]]'''s Ultimecia for the ''[[VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy Dissidia]]'' series.
* CoatCape: Wears a long coat that provides this appearance.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: [[spoiler:In contrast to Gala, [[OmnicidalManiac who wants to sacrifice everyone in Orience to open Etro's Gate]], Arecia's method of choice involves identifying and cultivating a group of individuals with souls strong enough to serve the same purpose. The children who'd become Class Zero were her candidates, though she found two of them, Tiz and Joker, to be superfluous and appointed them as aides tasked with overseeing Orience's GroundhogDayLoop instead.]]
* HotWitch: She's one of the most gorgeous teachers ''Final Fantasy'' has ever produced.
* JerkassToOne: She's very loving, motherly, and doting towards Class Zero, but is noticeably much more aloof and stern towards Machina and Rem, outright stating that they are inferior to her children. That said, however, she still expresses enough concern to regularly monitor Rem's illness. [[spoiler:In the normal ending, she warms up considerably to both of them, and requests that they remember her children once lived.]]
* NavelWindow: Her shirt is open at the bottom, exposing her navel.
* ParentalSubstitute: She was the one who raised the original twelve students in Class Zero. ''Agito'' suggests the same applies for Tiz and Joker, as they also refer to Arecia as "Mother" and [[spoiler:were originally considered by her to partake in the experiment involving the other members of Class Zero]].
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:In the normal ending, she is convinced by Tiz and Joker to de-crystallize Machina and Rem, allowing them to record the deeds of their fallen classmates in order to know what motivated their decision to refuse becoming l'Cie and alter the course of history, which moved her to abandon the experiments to open Etro's Gate. This extends to the secret ending, where she allows the rest of Class Zero to live in an altered Orience where the crystals are no more, allowing them to reunite with Machina and Rem and live happily ever after.]]
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:She is really a fal'cie created by Pulse to try and open the Door of Souls.]]
* RippleEffectProofMemory: [[spoiler:One of a select few throughout Orience able to remember [[GroundhogDayLoop the previous spirals of history]]. All '''600,104,971''' of them prior to the events of ''Type-0'' if the AkashicRecords are to be believed.]]
* SeenItAll: [[spoiler:Has repeatedly seen various versions of Class Zero's failure against Cid and the destruction of Orience. However, Rem and Machina's arrival spelled the ultimate subversion of this cycle, intriguing Arecia enough such that she eventually decides to pull off a PetTheDog moment by triggering a CosmicRetcon that [[RetGone causes the crystals to cease to exist]] and give Class Zero one more chance to live like a happy, if somehow ordinary, homeroom.]]
* SmokingIsGlamorous: Especially if it's in a long holder.
* ParentalSubstitute: She was the one who raised the original twelve students in Class Zero.
* TimeAbyss: [[spoiler:The world has been destroyed by Gala and recreated by Arecia 600,104,972 times]].
* VagueAge: Her age is unknown. [[spoiler:Since she's a fal'Cie that exists outside the cycle of Orience over six hundred million times, she's most likely trillions of years old, and even within a given spiral, she's as old as Orience itself.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:She's actually a fal'Cie acting to manipulate Class Zero into becoming Agito to open Etro's Gate for her.]]

----
* TheAce: Academically speaking, she's one of the best students in the peristylium, and so most of the teachers [[InvokedTrope believe her to be this]] trope.
* AdamSmithHatesYourGuts: Her schtick is that she sells items and information at premium prices. If you complete her side missions, she uses her connections to join Class Zero and take over as orderly at a "classmate discount".

----
* ForScience: When not making equipment for Rubrum, he researches a way to create an ArtificialHuman without regard for moral standards or Rubrum's desperation, much to Kurasame's consternation (especially considering he's using one of the latter's students as guinea pig).

----

These just so happen to be the only {{playing card|Motifs}}s not represented within Class Zero, and it's not a coincidence either; [[spoiler:Arecia originally intended for Tiz and Joker to join the other protagonists before she deemed them unnecessary in her plan to open Etro's Gate, so they are effectively the "missing" members of Class Zero]].

!!Milites Empire
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8474847e6dd873a835ea57ce2d6f89a4.png]]
Milites is the western nation of Orience, whose heraldic beast is [[TheFourGods Byakko, the White Tiger]], and whose traditional colors are white and yellow. Milites is traditionally ruled by an Emperor from his winter-battered fastness in Ingram, but due to his sudden disappearance, Marshal Cid Aulstyne took over and became its effective dictator. Its Peristylium specializes in researching the White Tiger Crystal, and unlike the other nations their Crystal can be tapped onto Magitek armor, allowing for mass application of its powers.

* BadassBoast: [[spoiler: Though it is less of a boast and more of his last ditch attempt to defy Gala, Cid says "I will not let you go any further, people are not puppets for gods! [[{{DyingasYourself}} Cue Cid cutting his own head off.]]]]
* BigBad: He's the driving antagonist of the game by nature of leading Milites to war against the other nations.
* CommandingCoolness: His title is also translated as ''High-Commander''
* CommissarCap: Wears a very smart commander's cap.
* CoolSword: Wields a katana as his personal weapon.
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:He is possessed by Gala and transformed into the Rursan Arbiter near the end of the story.]]
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler:After Gala tells Cid that Cid is going to be his vessel to become the Rursan Arbiter, and all Orience is just an experiment by the l'Cie, Cid declares "People are not puppets of the gods!" and kills himself rather than submit willingly.]]

* TheEmperor: Milites has an actual Emperor, but Cid has imprisoned him and taken control in his place, making him this trope in practice.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He may be an imperialistic dictator, but even Cid is horrified when he finds out [[spoiler:Gala has chosen him to be the Rursan Arbiter and usher in the end of the world]].
* EvilSoundsDeep: He has a powerful, deep voice and is the BigBad.
* EvilStoleMyFaith: As a young man Cid witnessed the destruction of his homeland amidst the many wars that ravaged Orience, causing him to distrust the Crystals as something that can only lead humanity astray. [[spoiler:He is ultimately proven right, when they turn out to be Gala's instruments for culling human souls and forcing open Etro's Gate.]]
* {{Expy}}: His motivations and methods are heavily inspired by [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII Vayne]]. [[spoiler:As Vayne wanted to conquer Ivalice to shake off the rule of the Occuria, Cid wants to conquer Orience to bring balance and equality without need for the favor of Crystals.]]
* FinalBoss: Sort of. [[spoiler:Cid kills himself rather than aid Gala willingly, but Gala just reanimates his body to use it anyway, and said body, in the form of the Arbiter of Rursan, is the final boss.]]
* HopelessBossFight: [[spoiler:In the first phase of the final battle, he [[CurbStompBattle manhandles your half-dead party]] with 9999-damage attacks. * NecessarilyEvil: [[spoiler:Cid's campaign of conquest and destruction were the only methods he knows of uniting the world in defiance of the crystals. Unfortunately for him, he played right into Gala's hands.]]
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:He does so after absorbing the l'Cies' Phantoma.]]
* OutOfCharacterAlert: Cid starts saying some odd things when the party arrives at the final dungeon. [[spoiler:Because at that point he's nothing more than Gala's meat puppet.]]
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:At the end of the game his body becomes the Rursan Arbiter, essentially a super-powered EldritchAbomination l'Cie.]]
* PuttingOnTheReich: Not only does Milites remind one of Nazi Germany, but Cid is said to have taken control of the nation by manipulating the political scene. After taking command of Milites in the wake of the Emperor's disappearance, he shifted Milites' focus to increased industrialization and militarization in the name of global conquest, and dissenting authoritative bodies in Milites were either dissolved or absorbed into the Empire. Combine that with Cid's charismatic speeches to his troops and the eventual reveal the White Tiger Crystal is losing power and the war is a way for Milites to avert its own collapse as a nation, and he's an obvious stand-in for Adolf Hitler.
* RageAgainstTheHeavens: [[spoiler:After finding out that the world is really one big experiment created by the fal'cie servants of Lindzei and Pulse, he tells Gala to piss off and kills himself rather than be a willing pawn.]]
* SenselessSacrifice: [[spoiler:He kills himself to prevent Gala from using him as its pawn in destroying all of Orience. Alas, Gala apparently planned ahead and hijacked his body, anyways.]]
* ShaggyDogStory: Whichever way Cid took the war's direction, the same result would have come about either way. [[spoiler:Had Rubrum not defeated both Concordia and Milites to unite Orience, then those two would have destroyed Rubrum and then Cid would have to turn on Concordia. One way or the other, the world would be united and Tempus Finis would arrive.]]
* TakeOverTheWorld: This is his goal, [[spoiler:though ultimately for a noble reason]].
* TheUnfought: [[spoiler:Cid himself is never fought but his already deceased body does become the monster that serves as the FinalBoss]].
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:No matter how much he rages against the fal'Cie, it turns out that everything he did benefited no one but Gala himself.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:Ultimately Cid desires, above all else, an Orience free from the eternal repetition of cruel experiments of the fal'Cie and their crystals, even if it means making the whole world run red with blood.]]
* TheWorfEffect: After he goes OneWingedAngel, he effortlessly kills [[spoiler:Shinryu Celestia]] to show just how badass he's become.

----
* AcePilot: The crystal jammer was outfitted to an MA because Qun'mi qualifies for this trope. It can go toe-to-toe with an Odin-class Eidolon pretty well.
* AntiMagic: Qun'mi is responsible for Milites having crystal jammers because of her Secundus powers; Arecia reports that the jammer on her MA would be impossible for a human to operate.

* PowerNullifier: The Dáinsleif Armor has a crystal jammer.
* {{Technopath}}: Her Secundus gift lets her control [=MAs=] by lighting up her brand and waving her hand. She can also empower technology, which is the only reason her Dáinsleif's crystal jammer was even operable.
* TransformingMecha: Her Dánsleif starts off as a pretty basic tank-looking thing (save for the nine-tailed Crystal Jammer affixed to the back end), but transforms into a shape more evocative of kitsune with Qun'mi's cockpit in the head.
