These are all the members of Fairy Tail singled out to participate in an annual exam on the guild's sacred ground, Sirius Island (A.K.A. Tenrou Island).

Besides the main protagonists, these characters are all secondary protagonists.

''Here be spoilers.''

[[{{Characters/FairyTail}} Back to the main character index]]
* BadassCrew: Fairy Tail easily outnumbers the other guilds the number of [[{{Badass}} Badasses]] that can walk-on directly into the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games]] team without any significant loss in ass-kicking quality.
* CombinedEnergyAttack: Almost the entire crew combined their powers with Laxus' to attack [[TheDreaded Acnologia]]. All for naught though, as the dragon basically waved it off.
* [[FishOutOfTemporalWater Fishes Out of Temporal Water]]: They spent seven years inside the [[SphereOfPower Fairy Sphere]] after the Sirius Island incident.
* MassOhCrap: When Acnologia attacks after they fight Grimoire Heart. And again when [[spoiler:it returns during the Tartarus arc.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: They all appear physically seven years younger than they are chronologically.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Master Mavis harnessed the Tenrou Group's love for each other to invoke [[SphereOfPower Fairy Sphere]] that allowed them to survive Acnologia's island obliterating-capable [[BreathWeapon roar]].

!Guild Masters

[[folder:Makarov Dreyar]]
!!Makarov Dreyar
!!!Voiced by: Shinpachi Tsuji (JP), Creator/RBruceElliott (EN)

The elderly, miniscule master of Fairy Tail. The members of his guild often give him grief for the trouble they cause between him and the Magic Council, but he loves them as if they were all his children. His mastery over many forms of magic, including the size-increasing Giant magic and Elemental magic, has earned him the title of one of the Ten Wizard Saints, who are widely regarded as the most powerful wizards alive.
* ActionDad: To Ivan.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: His magic allows him to turn any part of his body into that of a giant and he can use it on his whole body if he so wishes. Though when he's [[BerserkButton really ticked]], he only uses it for intimidation.
* BadassGrandpa: He's 88 years old when the series begins, but that doesn't stop him from being one of the strongest fighters in the series.
* BadassMustache: He has a large mustache, and is one of the most powerful wizards in Fiore and a Wizard Saint. Upgrades to a full-on BadassBeard over the second TimeSkip, having turned it into a goatee.
* BerserkButton: You can trash his guild however you like, but harming his subordinates? Not the best idea.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's usually quite amiable, but do ''not'' underestimate him!
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Eccentric and good-humored, but don't hurt anyone in his guild if you know what's good for you.
* BigGood: The master of Fairy Tail.
* BrainBleach: No one wants to see him naked, as the first OVA implies.
* CoolOldGuy: Usually, he's a pretty pleasant guy who acts as a father figure for everyone in Fairy Tail.
* CurbStompBattle: To Jose in the Phantom Lord arc.
** In the Sirius Island arc, Makarov is on the receiving end from Hades.
* DeusExitMachina: While he naturally wouldn't get involved in most of the series' conflicts, as the characters travel far and wide while he stays at home and looks after the guild, some threats do target the guild or the city it's in and considering he's one of the strongest members of the Ten Wizard Saints (the ten strongest wizards in the world), most threats that target the guild would have little chance of succeeding if he were allowed to enter the fray, so he's usually incapacitated in some way.
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: Makarov was genuinely surprised by how friendly Emperor Spriggan was, who had him treated as a guest of the Empire with a comfortable room, good food, and even card games, with the Emperor indicating that he was more than willing to negotiate with him when it comes to Lumen Histoire. Makarov even admitted he was expecting the Emperor to be more of an EvilOverlord. [[OhCrap Then he finds out]] he's dealing with [[spoiler:[[TheDreaded Zeref]]]].
* DirtyOldMan: He has pretty girls in his guild and he knows it. His perverted ways are downplayed in the anime and largely disappear from the series as a whole after a while.
* EccentricMentor: Quirky, clumsy old man? Check. One of the series' strongest wizards who often guides or speaks to his wizards about what life and magic is? Check.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Shows his guild a stack of complaints from the Magic Council for troubles they'd caused, scolds them all for getting the council mad at him ''again''...then burns the whole stack and pretty much says "Screw the Magic Council!"
* AFatherToHisMen: He considers every member of the guild to be his children.
* FridgeBrilliance: In-universe example. Laxus' whole takeover attempt in the Fantasia arc is just a teenage temper tantrum fueled by fear that he was seen as nothing more than the master's grandson. Makarov throwing him out of the guild publicly forces Laxus to take his own unique path.
* FriendlyFireproof: Fairy Law only harms those that Makarov considers an enemy.
* FrontlineGeneral: Whenever his guild goes to war with another, Makarov will always throw himself into the action.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]; he tries to sacrifice himself to protect his guild from Acnologia [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming but his kids won't let him.]]
** After [[spoiler:he disbands Fairy Tail, he alone goes to fend off the Albareth Empire to protect the members from an impending invasion]].
* HolyHandGrenade: His Fairy Law spell engulfs a huge area in holy light.
* IHaveNoSon: Subverted. This seems to be the case when he expels [[AntagonisticOffspring his son Ivan and grandson Laxus]] for bringing harm to their guild. However, he leads the guild in a warm sendoff for Laxus to prove he'll always watch over him, while he manages to keep a modicum of faith in Ivan for leaving his guild alone over the Time Skip.
* IWasQuiteALooker: Looked like a short, slender Laxus as a young man.
* TheLeader: He is the guild master of Fairy Tail, and the one who calls all the shots.
* LightEmUp: In his fight against Jose in the anime, which [[AdaptationExpansion showcases this more than the manga]].
* LightIsGood: He's a powerful user Light Magic and can wield Fairy Law, usually wears a white and gold coat, and is the Guild Master of Fairy Tail.
* LikeASonToMe: He considers all of the guild members to be his children.
* ManlyTears: After he expels Laxus and when his guild prevents him from making a HeroicSacrifice against Acnologia.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted to the point of]] RunningGag.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: Makarov is extremely small, and it seems like he has been since at least when Laxus was a young child. [[SizeShifter His magic cures this problem, though.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:After he couldn't bring himself to unleash Lumen Histoire to stop Face]], Markarov decides that it's time to [[spoiler:disband Fairy Tail in order to protect them from the grave threat of the Albareth Empire]].
* NiceHat: Wears a double-pointed cap in his earliest appearances.
* OffhandBackhand: Delivers a pretty good one to Aria, topping off his CrowningMomentOfAwesome versus Jose.
* OhCrap: Upon seeing for himself that Emperor Spriggan of the Albareth Empire is none other than [[spoiler:''Zeref'']].
* PapaWolf: Regards all of Fairy Tail as his children, and will go to ''great'' lengths to make sure they're safe.
* TheParagon: His main goal isn't to crush evil, but rather to inspire good in others.
* PassingTheTorch: One of the {{Running Gag}}s in the series is his inability to decide on a good successor, and just when he thinks he has one picked out, something happens that leads him to consider him being master until the day he dies. He finally does choose Gildarts, but Gildarts retires and shoves the position back on Makarov before anyone even has a chance to know he is the new master in the first place. [[spoiler: Erza does the same, only with SLIGHTLY more time as leader.]] This means that Makarov is, all at once, the third, sixth ''and'' eighth master of the Fairy Tail guild (Macao having served as the 4th master during the Tenrou Island time skip).
* PowerPerversionPotential: Takes advantage of his SizeShifter abilities to grope girls.
* SizeShifter: Though unlike the standard, he's one of the strongest characters in the series.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: The entire guild embodies this, but Makarov is the one who encourages this kind of behavior.
* StuffedInTheFridge: [[spoiler:Emperor Spriggan was planning on [[InvokedTrope invoking]] this with Makarov, sending his body to Natsu in order to piss him off, but [[SubvertedTrope he was saved in time]] by [[BigDamnHeroes Doranbolt]].]]
* TeamDad: He's the master of Fairy Tail, so this kind of goes without saying. Natsu even calls him "gramps".
* TheWorfEffect: Was hit with this during the Phantom Lord arc to hype up Aria and the other members of the Element Four.
* YouShallNotPass: Against Acnologia.

[[folder:Mavis Vermilion]]
!!Mavis Vermilion
!!!Voiced by: Creator/MamikoNoto (JP), Creator/LeahClark (EN)

The founder and first master of Fairy Tail. Her grave is located on Sirius Island, Fairy Tail's holy ground. While alive, she employed Illusion Magic, creating apparitions reminiscent of Sirius Island. Her spirit continues to watch over her guild to guide them; she is also responsible for protecting the Tenrou Group from Acnologia's attack, freezing them in time for seven years.
* AChildShallLeadThem: She was born in X673, and Fairy Tail was founded in X686. This would make her thirteen years old when the guild was founded, an [[ImprobableAge unprecedentedly young age]] for a Guild Master even in the present. Considering her co-founders were Hades/Precht (the ArcVillain of the Sirius Island Arc), Warrod Sequen (a member of the [[TheArchmage Four Gods of Ishgar]]), and Yuriy Dreyar (Makarov's father), let that sink in a moment as to what that [[ChildProdigy has to mean]] about Mavis' level of [[WiseBeyondTheirYears power and intelligence]].
* ACupAngst: In the fourth OVA, she just so happened to sneak into a FuroScene involving [[WorldOfBuxom many of the female members of Fairy Tail]]. HilarityEnsues.
* AllLovingHeroine: You ''know'' she's one when she's willing to [[spoiler:befriend TheDreaded by conjuring up illusions for him to pet]].
* AnAstralProjectionNotAGhost: [[spoiler:Mavis is not a ghost, in fact she's immortal. What we see is an AstralProjection while her OnlyMostlyDead physical body is encased in a crystal in suspended animation.]]
* AwesomeByAnalysis: In the four days that the Grand Magic Games have taken place, she recorded and memorized ''all'' the rival teams' stats and battles, and uses them to give Fairy Tail a strategy for victory.
* BarefootPoverty: Imposed on her by old and cruel guildmaster, who decided she was undeserving of the boots he had bought her. Mavis had to go barefoot and soil her feet, much to her chagrin. But she got used to not having shoes, until being shoeless grew on her. Mavis found it much more enjoyable to have bare feet all the time, started forgetting to put on or bring shoes with her even when she had the freedom to wear some, and then abandoned wearing them forever in favor of staying perpetually barefooted.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When Zeref tells her he plans to annihilate all living beings in Chapter 340, she responds it's the opposite. She will assure Fairy Tail will annihilate him, without any hesitating on her part.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: As Yuriy [[OutGambitted found out the hard way]].
* BigGood: Ever since her spirit left Sirius Island, she arguably shares, if not outranks, Makarov as this.
** With Chapter 340 out (and later 406), it's pretty much solidified that she outranks Makarov. Especially with her deep connection to Zeref, and the fact that she's [[spoiler:Lumen Histoire]].
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:The awaken of her InstantDeathRadius broke Mavis ''bad''. When Zeref met her a year later, Mavis was a shell of herself that only wanted to die.]]
* BreakoutCharacter: Not only was she a HeroOfAnotherStory with ''[[OriginStory Fairy Tail Zero]]'', but she takes a central role in the ''[[WarArc Albareth Empire Arc]]'' after her backstory was revealed, and the former turned out to be so popular that it has been confirmed to be receiving its own anime adaptation.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: The Gentle Girl to [[spoiler:Zeref]]'s Brooding Boy. [[spoiler:She was the first person to show him kindness in his lonely immortal life and once she became immortal like him, she was the only one able to understand his pain and suggested them to give EternalLove a shot to at least have each other. Sadly, the curse is hellbent in not allowing Zeref to be happy in any way.]]
* BungledSuicide: [[spoiler:After her InstantDeathRadius activated, she tried to commit suicide by starving herself to death. It didn't work.]]
* TheChessmaster: Her AwesomeByAnalysis skills aren't just limited to fighting. During the "truth game" against Yuriy, the sheer amount of OhCrap in his expression when he realized just [[AwesomeByAnalysis what kind of person he's dealing with]] and that he's been thoroughly OutGambitted speaks ''volumes''.
* CompleteImmortality: [[spoiler:Chapter 449 reveals that she isn't merely ageless. Zeref claims that her incomplete casting of "Law" cursed her to be an immortal like himself who kills everything around them. And she was, until [[KissOfDeath Zeref accidentally discovers the]] ''[[KissOfDeath real]]'' [[KissOfDeath way to break the curse...]]]]
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: In ''Fairy Tail Zero''. Her parents were both members of Red Lizard, but they died... unfortunately while being up to their eyeballs in debt, which Mavis herself then had to work off.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: She's childish, ditzy, and obsessed with fairies, but just ask [[BigBad Zeref]] and [[OutGambitted Yuriy]] what she's like when the chips are down.
* CryCute: The waterworks really kick off when she considers the possibility of her strategy going up in smoke due to a miscalculation.
* {{Curse}}: [[spoiler:She was afflicted with the same curse Zeref was. Her InstantDeathRadius only took longer to activate. Her existence as Lumen Histoire is only possible thanks to the curse itself [[NotQuiteDead still afflicting her despite her death]]]]
* CurseEscapeClause: Since the purpose of the Curse is to deny happiness to the cursed, [[spoiler:Zeref's Curse was able to kill Mavis despite her own Curse when they tried to give EternalLove a shot.]]
* CuteGhostGirl: You wouldn't expect the ghost of the first master of Fairy Tail would look like a cute little girl.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Mavis lost her parents as a very young child, and was taken in by a guild that treated her like a slave, and was even spurned by the guildmaster's daughter. When a big fight erupted in the guild and spilled over into the town where it was stationed, only the guildmaster's daughter and she were the only ones to survive.
* DatingCatwoman: [[spoiler:She's the benevolent First Master of Fairy Tail who was romantically involved with the feared evil wizard Zeref.]]
* DeathGlare: Delivers one to Zeref, the undisputed ''king'' of {{Death Glare}}s in this series, that would rival one of his own. It's even more unnerving in the anime.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Her InstantDeathRadius activates, and claims Makarov's mother Rita as its first victim. Mavis reacted as could have been predicted.]]
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:Played in the most tragic way possible as she died in Zeref's arms after they shared their first and only kiss.]]
* DoesNotLikeShoes: She is never once seen wearing anything on her feet. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in that [[CuteGhostGirl she doesn't need them]].
** Meanwhile, in the past, it's revealed the guildmaster took away her stuff constantly, including her shoes, forcing her to go barefoot. Even when living on Tenrou Island on her own, she preferred to go barefoot.
* ElegantGothicLolita: Spends quite a few chapters in ''Fairy Tail Zero'' wearing this type of dress. She even refers to herself as "[[spoiler:Black Wizard]] Mavis" while wearing it.
* EnemyToAllLivingThings: [[spoiler:She has the same curse as Zeref. As long as she cares about others, she will always be a threat to their lives. Zeref states that the only reason the InstantDeathRadius part of her curse hadn't manifested itself yet was because of Mavis' willingness to [[PragmaticHero issue orders that resulted in the deaths of enemies and allies alike]] during the Second Trade War, satisfying the "sees no value in life" CurseEscapeClause.]]
* EmptyEyes: Her eyes never reflect highlights. This could have been because she's a ghost, light just passes through her instead of reflecting off of her eyes. [[spoiler: It's actually because she, like Zeref, has Ankhseram's Curse. His eyes are all black with no pupils. Hers are all green with no pupils... until her curse activates and she also gains the UhOhEyes.]]
* EternalLove: [[spoiler:Tragically subverted. Once she became immortal like Zeref, Mavis told Zeref that even if the world rejected both of them, they still have each other and could find a way to break the curse together. However, since the curse kills anything the cursed one loves, Zeref ended up killing her with his kiss.]]
* FailedASpotCheck: Odd she didn't consider in her calculations of the possibility of someone like Kagura picking a fight with Erza given the shared history they have with Jellal at some point in their lives.
** Possibly implied to have actually been OutGambitted by Minerva, who's clearly been running some schemes of her own.
** [[spoiler: When the Albareth Empire's armada attacks, she sends the three Dragon Slayers to attack them, clearly forgetting they have motion sickeness. The faces of Mavis, Makarov and Ajeel are priceless.]]
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler: She has the exact same curse as Zeref, right down to the InstantDeathRadius that kills off everyone around her. However, she gets killed despite her immortality because Zeref fell in love with her, causing his curse to 'kill' her when they [[KissOfDeath kissed]]. Even then, she's [[NotQuiteDead stuck in a state of suspended animation]] as Lumen Histoire and aware of everything going on around her thanks to the Curse still affecting her]].
* FriendlyGhost: She's still friendly, cheerful and always appears to aid members of her guild long after she died and became a ghost. [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope Except]] [[AnAstralProjectionNotAGhost not really.]]]]
* GenkiGirl: She may be the BigGood, but she can be just as silly and hyperactive as anyone else in the cast.
%%* GreenEyes
* GodivaHair: [[spoiler:Her HumanPopsicle physical body, as Lumen Histoire]] is completely naked, with only her hair to cover her up.
* HairDecorations: Those wings on her hair.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Easily one of the kindest, nicest characters in the series.
* HeadbuttOfLove: [[spoiler:Zeref gave her a loving headbutt when she told him she used an incomplete version of Law. She seemed quite okay with it, until she [[NoSell didn't die]] from his touch, confirming both of their [[CompleteImmortality worst fears.]]]]
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Mavis is the main character of ''[[http://myanimelist.net/manga/69903/Fairy_Tail_Zero Fairy Tail Zero]]'', a SpinOff detailing how [[OriginStory Fairy Tail was founded]].
* HeroicBSOD:
** In ''Fairy Tail Zero'', the guild master of Blue Skull being able to see through her illusions and dispel them with a dust storm caused one of these in her; [[spoiler:especially after both Yuriy and Precht were grievously injured in the ensuing fight, and were forced to retreat]].
** She has an even bigger one once Zeref [[spoiler:tells her the ''real'' reason she hasn't grown up, and says that it's only a matter of time before her InstantDeathRadius activates.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: Her use of Law to save Yuriy's life, a spell that is ''extremely'' dangerous to use if you haven't mastered it, nearly killed her. [[spoiler:While at first it looked like she only got off with losing the ability to age, it turns out she received a FateWorseThanDeath...]]
* HolyHandGrenade: Fairy Law, of course. [[spoiler:Ironically enough, the original version, known simply as "[[ProtagonistCentredMorality Law]]", was taught to her by ''Zeref'' himself. This actually makes sense though, as it is an attack that only strikes those the caster sees as an enemy, [[AboveGoodAndEvil regardless if they're good or evil]]]].
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with.]] At the time, [[spoiler:Zeref]] really wasn't that bad of a guy; just a self-loathing CosmicPlaything who was forced to become TheAloner. [[spoiler:She becomes his friend - probably the first and only real friend he's had in centuries, if not ''ever'' - and [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe he was so moved by the experience]] that he gives them the edge they need to defeat Blue Skull.]] She even dresses up in ElegantGothicLolita and calls herself "[[spoiler:Black Wizard]] Mavis," showing she knew exactly who he was. And then he TookALevelInJerkass...
* HumanPopsicle: [[spoiler:Lumen Historie is her body frozen in a crystal thanks to Precht trying to save her life. Whether it's her corpse or she's in suspended animation has yet to be revealed. If Chapter 451 is accurate, it's the latter.]]
* ICannotSelfTerminate: [[spoiler:After her InstantDeathRadius activated, Mavis only wanted to die and tried to starve herself, but the immortality that came with the curse ruined it for her. She begged Zeref to kill her, but he said he couldn't because he had the same curse. Or at least he ''thought'' he couldn't...]]
* IdiotHair: A permanent cowlick on the very top of her hair. [[TheStrategist She's no idiot, though]].
* ImprobableAge: She founded a guild and became its Master at the age of 13.
* InvisibleToNormals: Only those who bear the Fairy Tail guild mark can see her since she's ([[spoiler:[[OnlyMostlyDead mostly]]]]) dead.
* KissOfDeath: [[spoiler:How Zeref 'kills' her, even though she was immortal. Turns out the way to end the curse is with love.]]
* LightEmUp: Fairy Glitter.
* LittleMissBadass: Just how badass is she? Not only is she easily one of the [[AwesomeByAnalysis most brilliant tactical minds]] in all of Earth-Land, but she's so powerful that she was able to use a spell like [[SphereOfPower Fairy Sphere]] from '''''beyond the grave.''''' [[spoiler:The fact that she wasn't actually dead, but was miles away and stuck in a crystal, doesn't take away from this feat.]]
* LivingMacGuffin: [[spoiler:Being Lumen Histoire, or Fairy Heart as it is less commonly known, a source of supposedly infinite Magical Power, Albareth is willing to wage war on Ishgar to claim her. Or more accurately, Zeref is.]]
* TheLostLenore: [[spoiler:To Zeref. She was the first and only woman he ever loved, but his curse wouldn't allow him to be happy with her. Her 'death' was where his real StartOfDarkness began.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: In ''Fairy Tail Zero'', this was originally the only magic she knew. Her illusions are convincing enough that she was able to bluff an enemy into giving up all the info he knew by conjuring an illusionary monster. Especially impressive since she was almost entirely self-taught.
* MerlinAndNimue: [[spoiler:Zeref was her magic teacher. Because she used an incomplete version of the Law that he taught her, she ended up cursed like him. Mavis wanted her and Zeref to form an EternalLove relationship to have each other and find a way to break the curse together, but sadly them falling in love with each other got her killed.]]
* AMotherToHerMen: She uses Fairy Sphere to protect the guild members on Sirius Island from Acnologia's attack.
* MyGreatestFailure: She never expected Precht to turn out the way he did when she chose him as master. Because of that, she blames herself for knowledge of Lumen Histoire leaking to Ivan. [[spoiler:Although it turns out that Precht took on the title of Guild Master ''himself'' after her passing and was the one who technically made Lumen Histoire, so perhaps it was less out of choosing him as realizing just how far her old friend had fallen despite everything he had done for her before.]]
* NeverGrewUp: [[spoiler:Her growth was halted after she used an incomplete "Law" due to Ankhseram's Curse.]]
* NoSell: She's completely immune to Zeref's InstantDeathRadius, and just stands there giving him a DeathGlare as he destroys the entire forest they're in just to make a point. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in that she's [[spoiler:immortal, and can't die. Indeed, the Mavis that appeared to Zeref might not even be a ghost at all, but some kind of convoluted AstralProjection meant to reinforce the cover-up of Lumen Histoire's true nature.]]
* NotGrowingUpSucks: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]. [[spoiler:The price she paid for using Law before mastering it was losing the ability to age. Yuriy deeply regrets this since it was for his sake]], but Mavis herself seems to be okay with it, and says it was worth it, [[spoiler: until she was told by Zeref the truth of her [[InstantDeathRadius inability to age]].]]
* NotSoAboveItAll: She is just as weird as the rest of the guild.
* OfficialCouple: With [[spoiler:Zeref, after chapter 450. They're even on the cover of Volume 53 of the manga holding hands, with a giant heart-shaped tree behind them, and their... [[{{Understatement}} complicated]] relationship is the focus of the ''Albareth Empire'' arc.]]
* OhCrap: Her response to Kagura being SpannerInTheWorks in regards to the strategy with Erza to fight Minerva. Then she graduates into a HeroicBSOD when Minerva pops out of nowhere, fearing her strategy might be completely derailed.
* OnlyFriend: To [[BigBadFriend Zeref]]; see ThrowTheDogABone below. Not only was Zeref the one who [[spoiler:taught Fairy Tail's founding members their magic]] because of it, but throughout the entire main series and ''Fairy Tail Zero'', Mavis is the only person that Zeref has ever been shown to allow to be in close physical proximity to him. Zeref even says that the time they spent together were his 'most cherished memories.' [[spoiler:She's also the only person who can ''truly'' relate to him, seeing as how she has the exact same curse as Zeref himself. She eventually fell in love with him and [[KissOfDeath sealed her fate.]]]]
* OnlyMostlyDead: [[spoiler:The ultimate result of her dying with Ankhseram's Curse still technically afflicting her. Her heart has stopped beating, but her Magic power still remains. She's not alive, yet not dead at the same time]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Even Lucy was wondering why she wandered off into the forest on her own with such a serious look on her face.
* OppositesAttract: [[spoiler:With Zeref.]]
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: She's been dead for quite some time, and yet, she was somehow able to transcend death itself to the degree that she is not only able to communicate with the living ([[InvisibleToNormals as long as they're Fairy Tail members]]), but can actually use her magic as well. [[spoiler:Later [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]], as she's AnAstralProjectionNotAGhost, and she was never dead, OnlyMostlyDead.]]
* PassingTheTorch: Chose Precht as master of Fairy Tail. [[MyGreatestFailure She has come to regret her decision]] due to his FaceHeelTurn.
* PillarOfLight: Fairy Glitter.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler: She begs the illusion of Zeira that she unconsciously created to not dispel, but ultimately accepts her death and moves on.]]
* ThePollyanna: For a girl who [[spoiler:received the Ankhseram's Curse in life and who was accidentally killed by the man she loved]], Mavis sure remains very cheerful as a ghost.
* PosthumousCharacter: [[CuteGhostGirl Of a sort]]. She's been stated to be dead for years, and her grave is located on Sirius Island. [[spoiler:The truth is a [[CompleteImmortality bit]] [[OnlyMostlyDead more]] [[SealedGoodInACan complicated]] than that.]]
* PowerFloats: She's shown several times to be able to fly or hover, and she's one of the most powerful mages in the series. Justified in that she's a [[CuteGhostGirl disembodied spirit]].
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Weaponized; she uses the power of the guild members' faith and bonds between themselves to cast Fairy Sphere.
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: The ultimate spell that [[spoiler:Zeref]] taught her, known as [[spoiler:[[TrueNeutral Law]]]], a technique that destroys anything that the ''caster'' considers evil and saves all that is good, the "Absolute Judgement" magic. [[spoiler:This explains how both [[HolyHandGrenade Fairy Law]] and [[UnholyNuke Grimoire Law]] would be developed]].
* RapunzelHair: Covers her entire back, and reaches down to her ankles.
* RedBaron: "Fairy Tactician" Mavis.
* {{Retcon}}: Was apparently originally going to be male until Hiro Mashima realised Mavis was a girl's name.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Mavis' physical body, [[SealedGoodInACan encased in crystal]], is Lumen Histoire. She's apparently in there for a [[InstantDeathRadius damn good reason]].]]
* SealedGoodInACan: [[spoiler:Lumen Histoire is her physical body encased in a crystal.]]
* ShadowArchetype: To [[BigBad Zeref]], in a number of ways. For example:
** Both are unaging, [[TheArchmage extremely powerful]] wizards who have profoundly affected Earth Land as we know it today, that started off as [[ChildProdigy Child Prodigies]] in the fields of magic. Mavis went on to found the titular guild, whereas Zeref is indirectly responsible for the existence of just about every Dark Guild that came after him, especially [[OurDemonsAreDifferent Tartaros]].
** Mavis actually ''is'' dead ([[spoiler:[[OnlyMostlyDead sort of]]]]), whereas Zeref [[DeathSeeker wants to]] die. Both lost their ability to age [[spoiler:as a consequence for fiddling with magic they didn't completely understand for the sake of somebody they cared about, with Mavis losing her ability to age by using a spell she hadn't mastered to save Yuriy's life, and Zeref losing his by pissing off [[JerkassGod Ankhseram]] by trying to resurrect Natsu as E.N.D.]]
** Also, both of them used magic to cope with loss [[spoiler:Mavis unconsciously used her illusion magic to pretend that Zeira was still alive, and Zeref used magic to revive his dead little brother Natsu as E.N.D.]] And the clincher? [[spoiler:They both have Ankhseram's Curse, and fell in love with one another.]]
** The ''Fairy Tail Zero'' anime takes it a step further: Both were ConvenientlyAnOrphan, with Mavis being entirely self-educated and desperately wanting to attend school, whereas Zeref was [[spoiler:shipped off to a boarding school after his parents and younger brother were killed by dragons]]. Mavis only left Tenroujima after meeting Yuri, Warrod, and Precht, all of whom later became her co-founders in Fairy Tail, whereas Zeref was surrounded by [[spoiler:surrounded by his fellow students and teachers. He may or may not have had friends his own age, but his teachers were both awestruck and incredibly nervous about Zeref's [[TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow chosen field of study]], and was later more or less completely isolated up until he met Igneel, Anna, and later, what would become Albareth, and Mavis herself]].
* ShipTease: With Zeref. ''Hard.'' [[spoiler:He gave her a HeadbuttOfLove and she seemed perfectly willing to go along with it. Of course, he was really just TemptingFate to see if she'd die. [[TheReveal She]] [[YouAreNotAlone didn't]].]]
** Chapter 450 [[spoiler:makes it [[OfficialCouple official]]. [[TearJerker In the saddest way possible.]]]]
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: [[spoiler:She fell in love with Zeref despite knowing full well who he is and what he is capable of because she could see he wasn't as bad as rumors described him, just seeing a lonely and tortured man with a cruel curse. She became attracted to him because he was kind enough to teach her and her friends magic and she said she liked his kind eyes. She is immensely disappointed in the man he is today, though she does recognize the circumstances that caused his change in character (specifically her death) are more than justifiable.]]
* SphereOfPower: Fairy Sphere. It's ''the'' strongest defensive spell in the series, but using it displaces you in time.
* StarCrossedLovers: [[spoiler:Ankhseram's Curse all but guarantees that she and Zeref can never truly be together, though it's heavily implied that Zeref wants Lumen Histoire not as a weapon, but as a way to ScrewDestiny.]]
* TheStrategist: Her AwesomenessByAnalysis abilities earned her the nickname "[[RedBaron Fairy Tactician]]". She earned this title during the Second Trade War, where she was ''the'' reason her side won. [[spoiler:[[PragmaticHero Her willingness to issue orders that resulted in casualties for both sides]] was the only reason her InstantDeathRadius didn't activate at the time.]]
* SympathyForTheDevil: She genuinely feels bad for Zeref, having asked if he still wanted to die after the Grand Magic Games and implied that she willingly let him stay on Sirius Island with her. In the anime, she even looks like she's on the verge of tears as he basically tells her that he thinks HumansAreBastards. Regardless, she still [[BigBadFriend vows that Fairy Tail will stop him from]] [[PutThemAllOutOfMyMisery wiping out humanity]]. ''Fairy Tail Zero'' shows how they ''really'' knew each other; [[spoiler:she befriended him, and ironically, if it wasn't for Zeref, Fairy Tail as a mage guild might have never existed]]. There's also the fact that [[spoiler:she knows ''exactly'' what he's going through, and that they love one another.]]
* TeacherStudentRomance: [[spoiler:She developed a crush on her magic mentor Zeref.]]
* ThrowTheDogABone: What she did with her Illusion Magic for Zeref brought him to TearsOfJoy. He even admits in the narrations at the end of the chapter that that was his most precious memory. It's safe to say she was his OnlyFriend in centuries, if not ''ever''. [[spoiler:She's also the only person in the entire world who can ever truly relate to him, seeing as how they both have the same Curse. This is the reason why they eventually fell in love with one another.]]
* TheUnreveal: [[spoiler:Mashima outright censored her fate on the last few pages of ''Zero''. It's still ultimately not even clear if she's dead or alive, much less how she ended up encased in crystal. The 'dead or alive' part is at least cleared up in Chapter 449, though, and then once more in 450.]]
* VagueAge: As in how old she was when she died. She looks like a child and has some child-like manners, but she is a very intelligent strategist and was able to start and run a whole guild, which could hint that she is a grown-up or at the very least in her late teenage years. We finally learn her birth year, if not her age when she died, in ''Fairy Tail Zero''. She was born in X673, meaning she'd be 118 if she was still alive today, and that she was thirteen years old when the guild was founded. Chapter 13 of ''Zero'' reveals she was [[spoiler:twenty-six years old]] when she [[spoiler: died. She still appears as a thirteen year old girl because she lost the ability to age right before that.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: At this point, it's pretty much impossible to talk about her without revealing that [[spoiler:she's not dead, has a ''deep'' connection to Zeref, and that her physical body is Lumen Histoire, a.k.a. Fairy Heart.]]
* WalkOnWater: The very first time Fairy Tail saw her, she was standing on the waves near Sirius Island.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Says this to Zeref, saying she doesn't believe ''any'' of the rumors about him, and said that there's no way somebody as kind as him can be evil. [[spoiler:Then he reveals how she's now immortal like himself, adds that it's only a matter of time before her InstantDeathRadius activates, and she runs away crying.]]

[[caption-width-right:249:[[labelnote:Click here to see her in Satan Soul]]http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/85f44575a9890bc5103e771f8a619911.png[[/labelnote]]]]

A semi-retired S-Class wizard who works at Fairy Tail as an employee. She is an expert at using Transformation Magic to alter her appearance, clothes, and voice. She is also the eldest of three siblings who specialize in Take Over magic, a spell that lets its caster take over the powers of creatures they come in contact with; her specialty is Satan Soul, which allows her to take over the powers and forms of demonic beings. However, she temporarily loses this ability due to the trauma of losing her youngest sibling in an accident.
* AbsoluteCleavage: In Satan Soul.
* ActionGirl: Big time, rivaled only by Erza in Fairy Tail.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She and her younger siblings were chased away by townspeople for their Take-Over powers when they were kids, [[UngratefulBastard even after little Mira had used her powers to rescue a church]].
* {{Badass}}: Any character who can engage Erza on equal footing deserves the mention.
* BadassAdorable: She may seem sweet, but she's also one of the most badass characters.
* BadassLongcoat: Satan Soul: Sitri.
* BareYourMidriff: As a child.
* TheBartender: Sometimes acts as this in the guild. She's definitely got the friendly, good advice part down.
* BerserkButton: For all her friendliness and kindness, her siblings being hurt are a a big no-no to her. Fried pressed it and was given a CurbStompBattle for his efforts. Later, Seliah admits to her face of forcing Elfman to try and blow up the guild. Her response is a NightmareFace and "[[BigSisterInstinct You did]] [[ForcedToWatch that]] to [[ItsPersonal my siblings]]? Heh."
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's polite and caring...until you hurt one of her loved ones, such as Elfman. Fried finds out the hard way.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: If you slight her, she ''will'' get you back. Gajeel suffered this one.
* BigDamnHeroes: She punched out Seilah just after Kyouka had paralyzed Erza, rescuing Erza, Minerva, Lector, and Frosch.
* BigSisterInstinct: There is a [[BerserkButton line that no one should cross]]. As some tropes here say, Fried crosses it.
** Seliah admitting to forcing Elfman to try and destroy the guild certainly crossed it for her.
* BrokenBird: As of Chapter 381, it is revealed that the Strauss siblings were orphaned, and were ousted from their home village for Mirajane's demon Take Over, [[UngratefulBastard even if she had rescued a church with said powers]]. When she first joined Fairy Tail, like Erza, she didn't want to speak to anybody, though her younger siblings had no problem socializing. She even tried to leave the guild. A few years later, she presumably lost her younger sister, Lisanna. She seems to have recovered completely after Lisanna came back.
* TheChick: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]].
* CloudCuckooLander: She has her moments.
* ContraltoOfDanger: Satan Soul
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: In the anime-only Key of the Starry Heavens arc, after curbstomping Mary Hughes, rather than finish her off as everyone expected, she just waves her finger in Mary's face and says "Bad! Bad!"
* CoolBigSis: To several, particularly Lucy, not to mention in a literal sense to Elfman and Lisanna.
* CovertPervert: Seems to have UsefulNotes/{{BDSM}} tendencies, especially judging by her spanking of BoundAndGagged Erza due to a penalty game.
* CurbStompBattle:
** Completely trashes Fried with her SuperpoweredEvilSide in the Fantasia arc.
** Delivers another against Blue Pegasus' Jenny and later Kamika of the Garou Knights in the Grand Magic Games arc.
* CursedWithAwesome: Originally hated her Take Over powers since she and her siblings were chased out of their hometown because of them and she didn't consider herself human anymore. She managed to accept them after her siblings showed her they had the same kind of magic.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Orphaned, chased out of her home village because of her powers and then presumably lost one of her younger siblings.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Satan Soul.
* DeathGlare: Her "Demon" eyes.
** Returns one to an equally glaring Seilah in the Tartaros Arc and what a look it was...
* DemonicPossession: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]; ''she's'' the one who possesses demons, as explained by Makarov during a flashback.
* DissonantSerenity: Often has a cheerful smile even in situations when others would be upset. Sometimes, even when she herself is upset, she'll have this expression before suddenly breaking into comedic tears.
* ElementalPowers: [[ShockAndAwe Lightning]], [[MakingASplash Water]], and [[CastingAShadow Darkness]].
* EnfantTerrible: Was one when she was younger, though Lisanna's death caused a great shift in her personality.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Lucy has been seen looking at her modeling pictures. In the Fantasia arc, it's been stated that she has captured the hearts of men and women across the land.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: After her sister Lisanna was attacked by their [[SuperPoweredEvilSide brother Elfman]], she changed her hair from a [[TomboyishPonytail ponytail]] to a [[IdiotHair forehead tail]]. The new hairstyle is more in keeping with the sweeter personality she developed.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: DoubleSubversion. Many have said that she's a good chef, but she's easily the most feminine out of all of the cast. However, interestingly enough, she was even able to cook when she was a kid.
* FingerLickingPoison:
--> "Poison? That's merely a dessert... For a demon like me [[SayItWithHearts <3."]]
* FormerTeenRebel: She's sweet now, but as a kid she was PerkyGoth who walked a line between HotBlooded and {{Jerkass}}.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Jenny Realight, and sometimes with Erza if their former rivalry even comes up anymore.
* GameFace: Satan Soul.
* GirlinessUpgrade: In her backstory.
* GirlyBruiser: She is the TeamMom of the guild, is incredibly gentle, and is said to be the guild's TeamChef. She also has a modelling gig with Sorceror's Weekly Magazine. Her Satan Soul forms, however, make her very much a bruiser.
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: She had TsurimeEyes when she was younger and when she uses Satan Soul, now she has TaremeEyes.
* GuestStarPartyMember: She usually has a role in most arcs, especially ones where the entire guild does, but particularly during the Phantom Lord arc where she stands in as TheChick for Lucy in her absence and the Grand Magic Games arc, where she can be considered Natsu's [[TheLancer Lancer when they go to rescue Lucy]].
* HeroicSacrifice: To protect Lisanna from Azuma's explosives in the Sirius Island arc.
* IdiotHair: She purposely wears it this way. As a teenager, she had a TomboyishPonytail.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: During her youth, after being harassed by people and ousted from her village, Mira began to resent her power. Now averted, as she uses her power to protect her siblings.
* IndifferentBeauty: While it's been mentioned that she's won the hearts of men ''and women'' all over the country, she never actually uses her looks to her advantage.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Emphasizing her sweet, compassionate nature.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In her youth, despite being rude and abrasive, she still cared for her younger siblings.
* KamehameHadoken: Soul Extinction.
* TheLadette: When she was younger.
* LetsGetDangerous: After Fried hurt Elfman, she finally showed just how dangerous she can be.
* LightningBruiser: Her Satan Soul lets her fly and move with incredible speed and make shock-waves with her punches.
* LiteralGenie: She has a bit of fun with this during the beauty pageant in the Fantasia arc. While the other contestants use their magic to change into alluring costumes or bathing suits, she uses hers to make a happy face... Happy the cat, that is.
--> "This is my happy face!"
* LittleBigSister: She's Elfman's older sister, but doesn't look like it since he's way bigger and really protective of her.
* LittleMissBadass: Before Mirajane joined Fairy Tail, she defeated a demon attacking a church with her Satan Soul.
%%* MarkedChange
* MeaningfulName: The first half of her name (and frequent nickname), Mira, means "peace." It was more of an IronicName during her EnfantTerrible years, but it suits her adult persona extremely well.
* MsExposition: She's often the one explaining things about the guild or guilds in general to Lucy (and thus to the audience).
* MsFanservice: To the point of winning a fanservice contest against another model in the Grand Magic Games.
* MysticalWhiteHair: A mage with white hair.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: She endured one from Seilah, who was using [[OneWingedAngel demonic power]].
* NoSell: Thanks to Satan Soul, things like poison have no effect on her. It prevents her from being turned into a demon by Tartaros because she already can turn into one, and made her immune to Seilah's [[PeoplePuppets Macro]].
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Her spells transform her into different kinds of demons.
* PeoplePuppets: Uses Take Over on [[spoiler: Seilah, gaining her curse, Macro. She uses it to command Elfman to save her. After the second TimeSkip, she now has full access to Seilah's form after using take-over on her half-dead state after defeating her.]].
* PerkyGoth: In her youth, though she wasn't so much "perky" as she was HotBlooded.
* PinkMeansFeminine: She usually wears pink dresses.
* PowerGivesYouWings: Satan Soul.
* PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep: In her Satan Soul Takeover.
* PowersViaPossession: Her family's trademark magic. Her particular brand is DemonicPossession.
* ProperLady: The death of her little sister mellowed her into one of these. The threatened death of her brother turned her into SilkHidingSteel.
* PsychosomaticSuperpowerOutage: Her sister's death was such a shock that she hasn't been able to use her full power ever since until she is threatened with the loss of her ''remaining'' sibling.
* RedBaron: She used to be called "The Demon", and [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin for good reason]].
* RedRightHand: A few of her transformations still have the IdiotHair ponytail.
* TheRival: To Erza. They even had their own version of Natsu and Gray's slugfests when they were younger, though now they are good friends. Still relishes any opportunity to bring Erza down a peg. She is also this to Jenny Realight of Blue Pegasus due to their modeling careers.
* ShamuFu: In the Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc, she takes down Pisces by grabbing the mother by the tail and whacking the son with her whale body.
* ShipperOnDeck: Natsu/Lucy, in an omake.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Wears spaghetti strap dresses. As a child, she wore tank tops.
* SiblingTeam: With Elfman and Lisanna until the latter's death. [[DoubleSubversion Subverted again when Lisanna comes back.]]
* SilkHidingSteel: So sweet and adorable and spacey, it's easy to forget she's an S-Class wizard.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her Satan Soul Take Over.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Satan Soul is a subversion. She's extremely angry the first time she uses it after Lisanna's death, so it seems like this at first.
* TeamMom: Is pretty much the entire guild's mother, which is kinda creepy considering she's also their poster girl.
* TearsOfJoy: When she reunites with her NotQuiteDead sister Lisanna.
* TheTease: Comes with her status as an in-universe gravure model. Sometimes will use her transformation magic to turn into other women (Lucy usually becomes the unwilling target) and makes sexy poses for the men.
%%* TenderTears
* TerribleArtist: Her drawings look like those of a kindergartener.
%%* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: She was the tomboy to Lisanna's girly girl. Then this changed.
* TomboyishPonytail: When she was younger.
* TookALevelInKindness: Her backstory.
* TransformationSequence: When she does her Satan Soul Takeover magic.
%%* TuckAndCover
* UnstoppableRage: Pretty much her main power. Mirajane ''really'' let Fried have it after he hurt Elfman.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Very good at this and acting the roles.
* WeaknessTurnsHerOn: In an anime-only flashback, she is seen blushing over a crying Natsu, much to her sister's dismay.
* WhoWearsShortShorts: As a kid.
* WillfullyWeak: She says that when she's with others, she restrains herself to avoid causing collateral damage to her allies. So when she's separated from them, [[CurbStompBattle well...]]. Justified, as her backstory was fleshed out in Chapter 381.
* TheWorfEffect: She was already having an incredibly hard time fighting Seilah of Tartarus, who was doing nothing but using {{telekinesis}} to [[ThrowTheBookAtThem pelt her with books]]. When Mirajane decides to use Satan Soul: Sitri, Seilah responds by going OneWingedAngel and hits her with a KamehameHadouken so hard that Mirajane is actually [[SoLastSeason forced out of her transformation]].
* WreathedInFlames: Satan Soul: Sitri.
* ZettaiRyouiki: When she was younger. Also, her Satan Soul Take Over.

[[folder:Laxus Dreyar]]
!!Laxus Dreyar
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KatsuyukiKonishi (JP), Hideyuki Hayami (JP - young), Creator/PatrickSeitz (EN), Mary Morgan (EN - young)
[[caption-width-right:225:[[labelnote:Click here to see his pre-TimeSkip appearance]]http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Laxus_5197.jpg[[/labelnote]]]]

Makarov's grandson, an S-Class wizard, and heir to the title of guild master. When he starts out, he values strength above all else and does not get along well with most of his fellow guildmates, particularly his grandfather. However, the experiences he goes through that cause him to be expelled and later reinstated in the guild shape him into a much kinder person. He uses Lightning Magic, and is also the Lightning Dragon Slayer via artificially implanted magic courtesy of his excommunicated father Ivan.
* TheAce: He's gotten rid of most of his personality issues, and is actually amicable, if a bit standoffish. Cemented by the fact that ''he beat Jura, who is ranked 5th among the Wizard Saints.''.
** There are now fan debates on whether or not he's become stronger than Gildarts. And we're still not sure whether or not Gildarts is stronger than Makarov...
* AndThisIsFor: In the Grand Magic Games arc, he beats up all the members of Raven Tail who hurt and/or humiliated Wendy, Carla, Gray, and Lucy. Humorously, when he gets to the one member who didn't do anything to Fairy Tail, he basically says "I got nothing" and blasts him anyway.
* AntiHero: He was originally a NominalHero and then a [[AntiVillain Anti-Villain]], but he seems to have softened into a PragmaticHero after his return.
* ArcVillain: Of the Battle of Fairy Tail arc.
* {{Badass}}: Hands down one of ''the'' most badass people in the Fairy Tail guild. Examples? He ''[[CurbstompBattle curbstomps]]'' the ''entire'' Raven Tail team in the Grand Magic Games and beat Jura, ''the 5th most powerful Wizard Saint'' '''one-on-one.''' And those are just the ''recent'' ones.
* BadassBaritone: In the dub, he's voiced by Creator/PatrickSeitz. Even in the original Japanese version, Creator/KatsuyukiKonishi uses a very deep voice.
* BadassLongcoat: It's covered in fur and completely awesome.
* AllYourPowersCombined: In the anime, he tells all the other members to combine their magic with his Raging Bolt to use against Acnologia. Sadly, [[NoSell it doesn't work.]]
* BigBad: Of the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, where his efforts to become leader involve manipulating a battle royal between the members of the guild by taking members of the beauty pageant hostage then threatening to destroy the town and hoping that Makarov surrenders the title of guild master to him.
* BigDamnHeroes: Just when Natsu's about to be killed by Hades, Laxus busts in and smacks the man right in the face. He pulls another one by delivering a power punch to buy time for Team Natsu to deliver the final blow.
** He pulls another one Post-Timeskip when [[spoiler: Fairy Tail is attacked by one of the Spriggan Twelve, he swoops down from an airship to not only stop Ajeel's attack but stop the guy in his tracks with an absolutely massive lightning bolt.]]
* TheBigGuy: On Fairy Tail's B Team and the combined team in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc.]]
* TheBusCameBack: In the Tenrou Island arc.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Makarov isn't his father, but when he was younger, Laxus called his literal old man out for expelling his dad from the guild, causing their relationship to sour.
** Later played straight to Ivan during the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: At the beginning of the series, Laxus considers strength to be the most important thing in the world. After a few months of traveling and finding himself, he says this after giving Natsu all of his magical power to fight Hades.
-->'''Natsu:''' "Why did you give this to me? I'm so much weaker than you."\\
'''Laxus:''' "It's not about strong or weak. Who was the one hurt by all this? Someone with the guild's brand needs to handle this...the right way. Take the pain that was caused to your guild and return it ''100 fold''."
* CoatCape: Seriously, he ''almost always'' wears that coat
** TheCoatsAreOff: Discards his coat to fight Natsu and Erza in the Fighting Festival arc, and later against Jura in the Grand Magic Games arc.
* TheComicallySerious: Best shown during the scenes with the rest of the Guild. Before his HeelFaceTurn he was often off to the side ignoring everyone's wild antics. Even after mellowing out he remains rather serious while others like Natsu are off starting a bar brawl or acting weird.
* CurbstompBattle: Post time-skip he seems to be doing this in spades. He curbstomps Raven Tail, which includes his own father, and Tempesta who is one of the Nine Gates of Hell of Tartaros.
* DeceptiveDisciple: Starts out as one to his own grandfather, but grows out of this after being beaten by Natsu and Gajeel.
* DuelBoss: Subverted. Natsu wants to take him down alone so badly in the Fighting Festival arc ("This is my chance to take the top spot!"), but after Laxus almost kills him, he accepts [[RivalsTeamUp Gajeel's help]].
* DynamicEntry: His entrance attack against Hades in the Sirius Island arc.
* {{Expy}}: To Captain Hardner, of ''Manga/RaveMaster''. Both of them pull a FaceHeelTurn because of a mindset that they later renounce; they start off calm and collected, and get progressively more AxCrazy the more their plan unravels; and they're both defeated by the combined efforts of TheHero and a [[TheDragon dragon]] who joined them by means of DefeatMeansFriendship.
* FreudianExcuse: ParentalAbandonment and/or the cause of the scar is what led to him being a JerkAss at the beginning of the story.
** Not only that, he hated being seen (At least in his eyes) as simply Makarov's grandson instead of his own unique being. This is what lead to his attempt at taking over Fairy Tail as he wanted to prove himself.
%%* {{Foil}}: Initally to Mystogan and to his grandfather.
%%** RedOniBlueOni: He's the red one.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Around the start of the battle against Hades, and even earlier, a powerful thunderstorm covers the island. Guess whose arrival those strikes of lighting heralded?
** Also, when he asks Mystogan which of the two of them is the strongest, Mystogan replies that he would choose Gildarts over either of them. Laxus says that Gildarts is never coming back. Gildarts does return, and not long after that. One wonders if Laxus is actually relieved that he wasn't able to kill anyone...
* ForgottenPhlebotinum: Remember when he fought Natsu and Gajeel and whipped out massive Thunder Dragon Slayer attacks? Remember him using Fairy Law?
** Actually, non-Dragon Slaying magic is pretty much ineffective against dragons, so it's questionable whether Fairy Law would have done the job.
** An alternate explanation is that he was using the little bit of energy he had left. The guy just beat freakin' ''Jura''. Give him a round of applause for being able to ''even stand'' after doing that.
* GameBreakingInjury: After sucking up Tempesta's poison, he is hurt so badly he basically falls into a coma. Makes sense since it is poison.
%%* GeniusBruiser
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: He goes crazy when he realizes that he doesn't hate Fairy Tail enough to kill a single member himself.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: An unusual variant. He changes from a gaudy outfit completed by a fur lined jacket to a simple one with a traveling cloak. Not so much good and evil as prideful and humble.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: A lightning bolt through his eye.
* HavingABlast: Raging Bolt.
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: Before he is excommunicated, he was always seen wearing headphones. He stops wearing them since the Grand Magic Games.
* HeelFaceTurn: He tries to destroy Fairy Tail in order to remake it in his own image. After being snapped out of his [[GoMadFromTheRevelation madness]], however, he embraces his kindhearted nature.
* HeroicBuild: He's really muscular and becomes a more heroic person.
* HeroicSacrifice: Instead of dodging an incredibly large and powerful attack from Hades, he takes it. All so he could give all his magical power to Natsu. Why? Because it was Fairy Tail that was hurt, and a member of Fairy Tail should be the one to return it 100-fold.
** He chose to use his own body to shield Wendy from Zirconis. Thankfully, time was reversed, giving Wendy the foresight to avoid the dragon, but it doesn't change the fact that Laxus had been fully willing to protect her.
** Later sucks up Tempesta's poison to save the Raijin Tribe and Yajima, with his order being that they take them all home.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Casting Fairy Law cost him a ton of magic energy, and this was the only reason Natsu and Gajeel were able to defeat him.
* HolyHandGrenade: Fairy Law.
* HulkingOut: During his battle with Natsu and Gajeel in the Fighting Festival arc when he reveals that he is a Dragon Slayer, complete with enlarged canines and scales appearing on his arms. It hasn't happened since.
* IdenticalGrandson: Looks like a tall, muscular version of young Makarov. Hades double takes when Laxus charges in, and calls Laxus "boy" which he used to call Makarov.
** Seems to be a case of StrongFamilyResemblance. While Laxus resembles his Grandfather the most, he also bears a strong enough resemblance to his great-grandfather, Yuri (the 4th unknown founder of FT) that fans immediately guessed that the 4th founder was Makarov's father. And of course, Ivan is the BlackSheep of the family.
* ItsPersonal: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]. He gives his power to Natsu instead of fighting Hades himself specifically because he feels as he wasn't a member of Fairy Tail anymore, he shouldn't be the one to take out Hades. See CharacterDevelopment above.
** Played straight against Raven Tail as he was not happy about how his own father would hurt his family.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He refuses to listen to his kind-natured heart, but when he is forced to do so, [[CharacterDevelopment he becomes a much nicer person]]. He's still a bit distant and says some oftentimes blunt things, but he cares for the guild more then anything.
* {{Jerkass}}: What he starts out as.
* {{Leitmotif}}: The prevalant music from the Fighting Festival arc. Becomes very apparent when it starts playing again after he storms in to attack Hades.
* LightIsNotGood: Applies if you go by the alternate spelling of his name, [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Luxus]] (Lux is latin for light). Subverted at the end of the Fantasia arc; he was GoodAllAlong.
* LightningBruiser: [[ShockAndAwe All puns aside]], this guy's abilities are ridiculous. He's hard enough to hit as it is, and when things really get dicey, he can actually turn himself into lightning, which makes him ridiculously fast. He's one of the toughest sons of bitches in a guild where being tough is par for the course, and his lightning magic is ridiculously powerful. This doesn't even take into account him being a Dragon Slayer or having Fairy Law in his arsenal. A perfect example of this comes up in his fight with Mystogan: Mystogan hit him with a devastating spell that took so long to set up that he needed to use illusions to keep Laxus occupied and buy himself enough time to cast it. When Laxus figured this out, he hit Mystogan with an equally powerful spell that he just fired off in the seconds it took for the latter's spell to activate. (although the two are considered to be equals, Laxus is more combat oriented while Mystogan specializes in stealth and utility)
** Interestingly, before his CharacterDevelopment, he had a tendency to turn himself into a FragileSpeedster[=/=]GlassCannon. His [[{{Pride}} arrogance]] had him cast ridiculously powerful and costly spells (read: Fairy Law) when he really didn't need to, which caused him to wear himself out and make it easier (read: actually possible) for Natsu to beat him. However, he's since grown out of this.
* ManlyTears: When he is excommunicated, Fairy Tail gives him the send-off of a lifetime to let him know that [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming they still consider him one of their own]], causing him to cry on his way out.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Right after Makarov is defeated by Hades.
* NotSoStoic: Cries when he is forced to leave Makarov behind to save the others when faced with Acnologia. Also during the Magic Tournament, he enjoyed his fight with Jura and definitely was not emotionless.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: [[JustifiedTrope Justified]]. No matter how much he hates Fairy Tail's reputation, he doesn't have the stomach to directly kill anyone.
* PetTheDog: Even before learning his lesson, he did treat the Thunder Legion with respect and had a fair amount of pride in their abilities, with them being his only friends within the guild.
* {{Pride}}: The reason for his rebellion, and his defining character trait pre-excommunication. After his return, he still has pride in his admittedly monstrous abilities, but it's majorly toned down and he no longer believes his power makes him better than everybody else.
* PsychoElectro: [[CharacterDevelopment He gets better]].
* PutOnABus: At the end of the Fantasia arc.
* RideTheLightning: He can turn himself into lightning to dodge an attack or travel a short distance.
* ShipperOnDeck: Implied to be one of Evergreen and Elfman, given his snarky comments and knowing nod toward them at the end of the Tenrou Island arc.
* ShockAndAwe: His main form of magic.
* SmokingIsCool: At first, but it was dropped early in the manga, and removed entirely in the anime.
* SocialDarwinist: He initially believes that Fairy Tail should adopt this ideal in order to become stronger.
* TheStoic: After returning.
* TameHisAnger: Upon his return after the fight at Tenrou Island, Laxus has mellowed out considerably.
* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: He gives his power to Natsu instead of fighting Hades himself because he believes it needs to be a member of Fairy Tail to take him down.
* TookALevelInBadass: A interesting version. He was already the second strongest person in the guild after Gildarts but after getting kicked from the guild and [[TameHisAnger taming his anger]] he improved his fighting style significantly upon returning. So much so that he beats Jura in a straight fight.
* TookALevelInKindness: Loses his arrogant, apathetic nature after returning to help Team Natsu against Hades.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: He really did.
* UseYourHead: In the anime, he delivers a [[JustForPun shockingly effective one to Hades immediately the following above mentioned case of a double take.]]
* WeaksauceWeakness: Like all Dragon Slayers, he also suffers from motion sickness.
* WalkingTheEarth: When he is excommunicated. He eventually returns.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: In his own way, he loves his guild and hates it when anyone laughs at it. He just focuses on its reputation more than its actual members, and ends up endangering their lives because of it.
* WholeCostumeReference: Anime only. In the Fantasia arc, his outfit resembles what [[GetBackers Ginji Amano]] wore back when he was known as the [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Lightning Emperor of the Limitless Fortress.]]
* WorthyOpponent: In his own, [[SmugSuper round-about way]], he considered only Natsu and Erza strong enough to fight the Thunder God Tribe during his Fairy Games.

[[folder:Gildarts Clive]]
!!Gildarts Clive
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KazuhikoInoue (JP), Creator/JasonDouglas (EN)

The S-Class wizard regarded by everyone in the guild to be ''the'' most powerful member of Fairy Tail, period. His magic, Crash, causes him to vaporize anything he touches as a testament of his strength. He is given permission to take on jobs that have never been completed for dozens, or even hundreds of years, and thus only visits his guild a couple of years at a time for short periods of time. He is also Cana's biological father.
* TheAce: To elaborate: He is said to be the strongest mage in the guild. Natsu is about as strong, or stronger than both Erza and Mirajane, and was able to beat Laxus (albeit with Gajeel's help). Natsu makes a point that he could never beat Gildarts. The guy is ''that'' strong.
* AcheyScars: His injuries start to sting just as Acnologia descends upon Tenrou Island.
* ActionDad: He's really Cana's father.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParent: Becomes this to Cana after he finds out [[LukeYouAreMyFather she's his daughter.]]
* ArtificialLimbs: Lost an arm and leg to Acnologia.
* {{Badass}}: ''The'' strongest member of Fairy Tail. Debates rage on whether or not that distinction includes Makarov or Laxus as of late. He's so incredibly powerful and skilled that Natsu considers it a minor accomplishment that one of his attacks forced Gildarts to move his legs in order to block it properly. ''This was the same special move that Natsu used to finish off Laxus''.
** He is the first person to confront Acnologia and live to tell the tale (albeit losing almost half his body), and the dragon apparently put more effort into fighting ''just'' him than the entire Tenrou Group. Keep in mind that he isn't even a ''Dragon Slayer'' at that. The only kind of people who can actually ''hurt'' dragons. And Acnologia, the Dragon King actually put more effort in fighting just ''him?''. Yeah, don't mess with him.
* BadassCape: It's tattered because of the battles it has seen.
* BattleAura: One of few characters shown to use one, and with good reason: it's strong enough to bring ''[[{{Determinator}} Natsu]]'' to his knees, ''in tears''. Complete with ChunkyUpdraft.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: ''Don't piss him off''.
* BeyondTheImpossible: During his fight with Bluenote, he ''destroys'' a '''[[UnrealisticBlackHole black hole]]'''.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Natsu.
* BigDamnHeroes: He shows up just as [[EvilCounterpart Bluenote is about to kill Cana and Natsu.]]
* ChivalrousPervert: A very good guy who keeps porno mags in his travel satchel.
* CurbStompBattle: To ''Natsu''. He still passes Natsu for the exam, but not before [[SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped making a point]].
* ADayInTheLimelight: Gets this in Chapter 299.
* DeusExMachina: He becomes this during Natsu and gang's massively one-sided fight against Bluenote Stinger during the Tenrou Island arc.
** Quite possibly the reason why Hiro Mashima always seems have him on an extended quest, WalkingTheEarth or somehow otherwise engaged in most story arcs: He's probably too powerful to fight any of the wizards in Fiore.
* DisappearedDad: To Cana. {{Justified}} in that he was away on another of his many-year-long jobs when she was born, so he didn't know Cana was his daughter, plus Cana was just too painfully shy to reveal the truth to him over the years.
* TheDitz: There's a reason why the town has [[ForDoomTheBellTolls an emergency alarm]] just for him.
* DotingParent: To Cana.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When Gildarts first strides into town after a long absence, we find out that the town is set up to transform itself to move buildings out of his way. If the people didn't, he'd just absentmindedly walk straight through people's houses.
* {{Expy}}: To [[Manga/RaveMaster Gale Glory]].
** And due to his appearance, to [[OnePiece Shanks]] too. They could be twins!
** Also one to [[{{Naruto}} Jiraiya]], being one of the strongest characters in the setting, [[ChivalrousPervert a pervert who collects gravure mags and flirts with young ladies]] and unlike Jiraiya, [[ReallyGetsAround clearly has better luck with women.]] He's also something of a father figure to TheHero.
%%* GeniusBruiser
* HandicappedBadass: Acnologia took his left leg, arm, and one of his organs.
* ItsPersonal: His fury against Grimoire Heart, Bluenote in particular:
--> '''Gildarts:''' "It was an important test. It meant more to these kids than any adult could ever imagine. This test represented their determination towards their futures...and you've stepped all over it."
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: At least he was in the past. In ''Fairy Tail Ice Trail'' he taunts Gray frequently, but still shows concern for his (and others') well being.
* LightningBruiser: Best example being during the Key of Starry Night filler arc. He litrally appears from off-screen in a flash of light and uppercuts the guy before anyone can react.
* ManlyTears: After Cana tells him that she is his daughter, [[FridgeHorror Then it dawned on him.]]
* MegatonPunch: Delivered one of ''epic'' proportions to Bluenote.
* OhCrap: When he learns Cana is his daughter, he frantically goes through the [[ReallyGetsAround names of all her potential mothers]]. Has a more serious one later when Acnologia shows up on Sirius Island.
* OneManArmy: Heavily implied.
* OverEnthusiasticParents: To Cana.
* PapaWolf: To his whole guild. Played more literally with Cana.
%%* PermaStubble
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Again, [[ForDoomTheBellTolls the alarm]].
* RankUp: Subverted. Makarov makes him the fifth guild master, but all he does is reinstate Laxus and then step down and make Makarov the ''sixth'' guild master.
* ReallyGetsAround: He goes through the names of thirteen women he slept with to determine which one could be Cana's mother before he guesses the right one.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Anime only. [[AvertedTrope Averted]] in the manga, where he's mentioned about once every arc before he returns. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in that [[WhatCouldHaveBeen the anime was supposed to end before he was introduced]], so they removed any line referencing him. The only inkling the anime has to his existence prior to his introduction is a statement that Fairy Tail has five S-Class wizards and only four (Mystogan, Laxus, Erza, and Mirajane) had been introduced.
* ShipperOnDeck: Ships Natsu/Lisanna.
* ShroudedInMyth: Regarded as ''the'' strongest wizard in Fairy Tail. He's the only Fairy Tail wizard allowed to take "SS-Rank" requests, and one such mission had been around for 100 years without anyone being able to complete it. We'll never know if Gildarts was good enough to do it, as Acnologia attacked him during the mission, and he had to quit due to his injuries.
* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: An in-universe, plot-relevant example. When he returns to the Guild, he shows Natsu the wounds he received from fighting Acnologia but the kid still seems hell-bent on fighting the dragon some day. Then, when the two have to fight on Sirius Island, Gildarts completely overwhelms Natsu ''with just his BattleAura'' to ram the point home that Natsu is genuinely ''not'' ready for that fight. Natsu accepting this fact is what inspires Gildarts to let him go on to the next part of the exam.
** ChekhovsLecture: And then, at the end of the arc, Acnologia shows up and Natsu--taking the advice he received earlier--''doesn't'' try to fight it alone; instead joining forces with the rest of Fairy Tail when they try to take it down. [[BreakTheBadass They still fail]].
* ThereWasADoor: Taken to ridiculous excess in his first appearance.
* TouchOfDeath: Apparently, the way his magic works, he has to consciously ''not'' use his magic in order to avoid destroying anything he touches. Combine that with someone who tends to have his head in the clouds, and you have a WalkingDisasterArea.
* UnstoppableRage: Gildarts returns to the island while Natsu and co. are about to be killed by Bluenote. He is not amused.
* WalkingTheEarth: What he leaves to do after the Sirius Island arc. However, he promises to return.
* WalkingWasteland: His power is "Crash", which literally [[MeaningfulName smashes]] everything he touches.
* YouAreInCommandNow: {{Subverted}}. Makarov chooses him to be the his successor as guild master... for about one chapter/episode. After making Laxus a member of Fairy Tail again, [[CrowningMomentOfFunny he demands that Makarov be made guild master again]]. Despite this, you could say that he's a secondary one to Makarov.

[[folder:Gajeel Redfox]]
!!Gajeel Redfox
!!!Creator/WataruHatano (JP), David Wald (EN)

The Iron Dragon Slayer, also known as "Black Steel Gajeel". He was raised by the dragon Metalicana, who taught him the power to transform any part of his body into metal. He starts out as a member of Phantom Lord and its master Jose's right-hand man, but joins Fairy Tail after his old guild disbands. However, it takes a long time for the guild to accept him since he is responsible for destroying their old guild hall and injuring Team Shadow Gear while a member of Phantom Lord.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The Fairy Tail Gaiden: Rhodenite is this for him, which finally goes into his past.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Prone to these whenever Wendy is upset.
* AnimeHair: Probably the worst offender on this page.
* ArcVillain: In the Fairy Academy omake/OVA.
* TheAtoner: Ever since he joins the guild.
* {{Badass}}: He is a very powerful Dragon Slayer who is on par with Natsu.
* BadassBaritone: His voice is deep, and also a bit gruff, crossing into GutturalGrowler
* BadassBoast: "The sky's not big enough for two dragons."
** Doubles as a MeaningfulEcho when he teams up with Natsu to fight Laxus.
--->'''Natsu:''' "I thought you said that the sky's not big enough for two dragons."\\
'''Gajeel:''' "Yeah, that's true. But there ain't no dragons flying in the sky now, not with all this lightning."
** We get another good one in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]] during his fight with Rogue.
---> '''Gajeel:''' "Let me jog your memory... As to the terror I can bring."
* BadassLongcoat: His main outfit. [[spoiler:He got an even more impressive one after the second TimeSkip to help him channel his inner [[Manga/OnePiece Smoker]], now as TheCaptain of the Magic Council's Detention Enforcement Unit]].
* BarbarianLonghair: He has a long, ragged mane.
* BattleCouple: With Levy in the Sirius Island arc.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Levy.
* BerserkButton:
** Don't claim that Natsu is stronger than him. Rogue learns this the hard way, by getting his ass deeply, and thoroughly beaten.
** Even attempt to hurt Levy and you will have your ass handed back to you in buckets. A ironically heartwarming twist as his own torture of Levy at the start of the Phantom Lord arc was what put in motion his HeelFaceTurn.
* {{BFS}}: [[TheAtoner Karma Demon]] Iron God Sword.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Given his rather [[TheRival aggressive relationship with Natsu]], it's worth noting that he never acts this way with Wendy. Also, on three separate occasions, he's comforted her when she was upset.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Natsu from being incinerated by Laxus twice in the Fighting Festival arc.
** In the Edolas arc, he is sent by Mystogan to help save his guildmates turned into lacrima. He manages to turn Erza and Gray back to normal, which allows them to pull their own with Natsu, Lucy, and Wendy.
** He saves Levy from being killed by Kawazu and Yomazu in the Sirius Island arc.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: A standard attack for him. In the anime, he takes it up to ChainsawGood.
* BigEater: It's stated in his data card, and he is often pictured eating iron.
* BloodKnight: He's eager to start a war with Fairy Tail in the Phantom Lord arc, and relishes every moment he gets to fight. He never quite shakes off his thirst for battle after joining Fairy Tail, making himself Levy's partner during the S-Class trial on Sirius Island mainly for the chance to beat everyone else up, much to her annoyance.
* BreathWeapon: Par for the course for Dragon Slayers; his shoots metal shrapnel.
* TheCaptain: [[spoiler:Post-second TimeSkip, he's now one for the Magic Council. Specifically, the Detention Enforcement Unit]].
* CastingAShadow: He achieves "Shadow-Iron Dragon Mode" after eating Rogue's shadows during their one-on-one in the Grand Magic Games. On top of things, this gives him the power to merge with his own shadow and move about at swift speeds.
* ChewingTheScenery: His song "Best Friend".
* ChromeChampion: His Iron Dragon Scales.
* CovertPervert: In the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]], he fantasizes having Lucy dancing for him in a BunnyGirl outfit while he plays the guitar.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Gets like this around his partner Panther Lily.
* CutenessProximity: He stops being an AxCrazy JerkWithAHeartOfGold the minute any felines, especially Panther Lily, show up.
* DeathGlare: He gives Rogue one after hearing that he isn't as strong as [[TheRival Natsu]].
* DeclarationOfProtection : To the entire guild
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]; he remains hostile with Natsu after losing to him in the Phantom Lord arc. It's only after he stays at the guild for a while does he start to loosen up.
* DefrostingIceKing: When he first joined Fairy Tail, he was hostile and bitter, saying he only joined because Juvia told him to. Eventually, he warms up to them. Especially shown with Levy and Natsu.
* {{Delinquents}}: In the second OVA.
* {{Determinator}}: Almost as big an example as Natsu.
* TheDragon: Originally introduced as Master Jose's right hand man in Phantom Lord.
** The movie (written/directly supervised by Mashima) seems to run on this, albeit a good version. Even after joining Fairy Tail, he's become Makarov's right-hand man when it comes to dealing with things concerning espionage and any other dirty stuff that would otherwise have been illegal per the council's rules.
* DreadfulMusician: A RunningGag in the series that any much anticipated {{Fanservice}} show with the Fairy Tail ladies will be cancelled and replaced by Gajeel doing a terrible lounge act.
* EasilyForgiven: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]; despite joining Fairy Tail, Makarov says he will never forgive him for the stunts he pulled in the Phantom Lord arc, and only invites him into the guild because he would get even worse without proper guidance. The same goes for everyone else in the guild.
** It takes him taking a few bolts of lightning from Laxus without retaliating, [[TakingTheBullet shielding Levy in the same scene]] and helping Natsu beat Laxus before they start to trust him and [[TheMole spying on Raven Tail]] and protecting Levy from Grimoire Heart before the guild really starts to open up to him
* EvilCounterpart: Originally introduced as Natsu's.
* EvilLaugh: Gajeel's laugh is freaky.
* EvolvingWeapon:[[spoiler: Goes from the Iron Dragon Slayer to the ''Steel'' Dragon Slayer.]]
* {{Expy}}: A black haired blood knight who comes from the same group of people as the main character and appears as a antagonist before undergoing a HeelFaceTurn and becoming a good guy. Why hello there [[DragonBall Vegeta]]! They both even refer to the main character with a title specific to them and hold them as a rival and get similar power-ups!
* ExtraOreDinary: As the Iron Dragon Slayer, he has some of the same abilities that Natsu does, and many that he doesn't. [[spoiler:And later on he evolves to the Steel Dragon Slayer.]]
* FangsAreEvil: All Dragon Slayers have them, but Gajeel comes closest to playing it straight due to his {{Jerkass}} and SociopathicHero nature.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: [[spoiler:Like the other dragon slayers who were raised by dragons, Gajeel was actually an orphan from four hundred years ago that was brought forth in time via the Eclipse Gate]].
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: [[spoiler: As it turns out, he and the other four dragonslayers with Dragon parents are children from 400 years into the past and sent to the future through the Eclipse Gate for the purpose of defeating Acnologia.]]
* ForgivenButNotForgotten: Despite Gajeel joining Fairy Tail, Makarov says he will never forgive him for the stunts he pulled in the Phantom Lord arc, and only invites him into the guild because he would never forgive himself if he just sat by and watched Gajeel fall even further into darkness. The same goes for everyone else in the guild.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: [[spoiler: Iron-Shadow Mode gets glowing blue eyes in the anime.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: he has scars on his right arm.
* {{Goth}}: His taste in clothing mixes this with a few punk elements. For bonus points even his powers correspond to the many piercings that he has.
* HeelFaceTurn: Joins Fairy Tail after Phantom Lord is disbanded.
* HellishPupils: An occasionally used mark of Dragon Slayers.
* HeroicWillpower: He gets stabbed in the arm--as in from the middle of his palm to the end of his shoulder--and keeps fighting. [[BloodlessCarnage It's toned down in the anime]], but still there: he manages to turn his arm into an iron pole before the sword pierces it, but it cracks to the point that it almost breaks, it's obviously painful for him.
** And in the movie, he's able to survive having blades stabbed through his body from in inside out, including three sticking out of throat and mouth. He doesn't even fall over, and just eats the blades sticking out of his mouth. The rest just seem to snap off of his body harmlessly. The whole ordeal seems really painful...for about five seconds.
** Justified in that his brand of magic revolves around eating, manipulating, and turning into metal.
* HiddenDepths: He's a muscle-bound and bloodthirsty warrior who enjoys ripping others to shreds. He's also a talented jazz songwriter, with half the talent in singing and playing.
** When [[spoiler:Mavis apologizes for the pain her sins is causing them]], he replies that [[spoiler:she has nothing to apologize for. All she did was fall in love and even he says that in itself is not a sin]]. Everyone was stunned silent to hear something so profound and kind from him.
* HollywoodToneDeaf: He ''really'' can't sing.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: With Levy. He's tall enough that he can use her head as an elbow rest.
* ImageSong: "Metallic Kiss."
* ImTakingHimHomeWithMe: He becomes driven to get a cat companion (Exceed) of his own upon realizing the other Dragon Slayers have one. He even says this pretty much when he meets Panther Lily.
* InspectorJavert: PlayedForLaughs; after becoming [[spoiler:captain of the Magic Council's custody unit]], Gajeel decides to arrest Natsu and his friends for reasons that range from Natsu for resisting authority and Lucy for [[MsFanservice indecent exposure]] to Juvia for being "criminally drenched" and Wendy...just because. It's taken a bit more seriously with Gray, whom he's fully prepared to bring the hammer down on for [[spoiler:being a part of Avatar despite being a former friend of his]]. Even after learning that Gray [[spoiler:was a ReverseMole]], Gajeel doesn't plan to let him off lightly for playing a part in [[spoiler:Avatar's schemes]] until Erza intervenes.
* IntangibleMan: While in Iron Shadow Dragon Mode, he can turn his body into shadows.
* {{Jerkass}}: Down right unpleasant before he did a HeelFaceTurn
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After his HeelFaceTurn and subsequent CharacterDevelopment he softens up towards Fairy Tail as a whole and becomes more comedic but also more caring to his allies.
* KickTheDog: In his Phantom Lord days, he attacks Shadow Gear, Lucy, and even his own teammates if they get in the way of his attacks. Not quite MoralEventHorizon, because he never uses lethal force.
* KindheartedCatLover: With Panther Lily, much to the shock of everyone around him.
* KungFuWizard: Like Natsu.
* TheLancer: On the combined Fairy Tail team in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]].
* TheLeader: Of Fairy Tail's B Team in the same arc.
* LightningBruiser: He's impressively fast for someone who's literally MadeOfIron and hits like a tank.
* MadeOfDiamond: This is the proper trope, despite the fact that he has a technique that makes him quite literally MadeOfIron.
* ManlyTears: When he found his grandmother figure from the Magic Council dead, and as [[spoiler:Metalicana permanently disappears]].
%%** TearsOfJoy: Anytime he reunites with Panther Lily.
* MundaneUtility: Usually he transforms his arms into swords or clubs to fight with. He has also been seen using them as shovels, pick axes, and hammers whenever he is doing construction work.
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: He and Natsu get into petty squabbles whenever they learn new yet similar abilities. Hilariously in the Tartaros arc, they wind up landing a finishing blow to ''each other'' while showing off their [[CastingAShadow Iron Shadow Dragon]] and [[ShockAndAwe Lightning Flame Dragon]] modes, respectively.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: Gajeel was raised by former Council member Belno, but was so rowdy that he never had a decent conversation with her. When he finds her killed by Tartaros seven years later, he regrets never being able to thank her for the trouble she went through looking after him.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The meanest (brutal, anti-heroic, initially an enemy of Fairy Tail and viciously beat Lucy) of Fairy Tail's three first-generation Dragon Slayers. He's a good person deep down, though, judging by how he remembered his grandmother figure during his fight with Torafusa. (Also, unlike most examples, he's fairly kind to Wendy, the Nice one of the three).
* TheNicknamer: Among other things, he's been noted to call Natsu "Salamander" ([[JustifiedTrope justified]] since that's Natsu's [[RedBaron actual nickname]]), Lucy "Bunny Girl", and Lily "Black Cat".
* TheNoseKnows: One of the Dragonslayers common traits.
* NoSocialSkills: Improves within the course of the series, probably because he was RaisedByWolves (technically a dragon but well) and then ended up in Phantom Lord.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He started off as aloof and hostile, but he eventually warmed up to everyone at Fairy Tail. Not to mention he saw Natsu and Wendy had their own companions and wondered why he didn't have one.
* ObliviousToLove: He totally misses any hints of Levy's obvious crush on him.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: To Natsu.
%%* OnlySaneMan: At times.
* OppositesAttract: With Levy.
* OutOfFocus: Minor example. He's built up for most of the begining of the series as Natsu's rival but gradually starts taking backseats in certain arcs. He is absent in the Orasion Seis arc, most filler arcs, and seems to be this in the current arc. Unlike most, he still plays a role in the story, but it seems Wendy has taken his screentime.
* ParentalAbandonment: Metalicana just disappeared one day, like every other dragon.
* PowerPerversionPotential: A bit. Besides being able to turn his arms and legs into swords and his skin into scales, Gajeel can make [[FreudWasRight giant iron rods]] and [[BoundAndGagged various metal bindings]]. He has used the latter ability on [[ThoseTwoGuys Jet, Droy]], [[{{Bookworm}} Levy]], [[TheChick Lucy]], and [[TheBartender Mirajane]].
* ProgressivelyPrettier: He is never actually ''ugly'', but after he changes sides and as the series goes along, he becomes much more fun to look at.
* ReasonBeforeHonor: [[spoiler: As the detention squad captain, he's willing to kill Gray if it stops the cult and saves all the civilians.]]
* RedBaron: "Black Steel" Gajeel.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Before his HeelFaceTurn.
* ReverseMole: Ivan thinks that he's using Gajeel to spy on Fairy Tail for him, but it turns out he's a DoubleAgent spying on him for Fairy Tail.
* TheRival: To Natsu after stepping down from being his EvilCounterpart.
* ShapeshifterWeapon: He can transform his body parts into iron weapons, including pillars, swords ([[ChainsawGood Including one with teeth that spin]]), hammers, lances, [[ThisIsADrill drills]], and when not in battle, he was able to turn his arms into a shovel and pickax to dig.
* ShipTease: With Levy.
* SixthRanger: If [[TheMedic Wendy]] is becoming the TagalongKid to [[FiveManBand Team Natsu]], then he also certainly seems to be slowly becoming this.
* SlasherSmile: Smiles from Gajeel always show teeth. ''Big'' [[FangsAreEvil teeth]].
%%* TheSnarkKnight
* SpamAttack: His Iron Dragon Lance: Demon Logs.
* StreetUrchin: He grew up in a lawless town called Denish before joining Phantom Lord, where he was a delinquent.
* SwordAndSorcerer: With Levy. He's the sword, despite being a wizard as well.
* TakingTheBullet: Twice in the Fighting Festival arc: once for Levy and once for Natsu, and both against Laxus' attacks.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: A fairly mild example when it comes to the snark but he does have his moments, especially with Natsu. He's definitely tall and dark, though.
* ThisIsADrill: Karma Demon: Iron Spiral.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Even after joining Fairy Tail and being marginally accepted, he still seems to be the guild's resident AxCrazy.
* TookALevelInBadass: Gained the ability to augment his Iron Dragon power with Shadow Dragon powers after ingesting a possessed Rogue's shadow during the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games]], making him, along with Natsu and his Lightning Flame mode, the only two Dragon Slayers with double power attributes.
* TookALevelInKindness: He softens up over time after joining Fairy Tail.
** [[spoiler: Even more after the second TimeSkip, where he is TheCaptain and wants to stop the Avatars because of all the people they will hurt.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: Some fans think that this is an apt description of his relationship with Fairy Tail [[ShipTease and Levy]].
--> '''Natsu:''' ''(eye squint)'' "Since when did you become so pro-Fairy Tail?"\\
** And arguably he is also this with Juvia who admitted he is someone she shares closest friendship with, while in his interview he answered he was close to no one in Fairy Tail. In manga and anime it's shown they are pretty close that he took her advice to try being more open to people to heart.
* UnderwaterKiss : With [[spoiler: Levy [=McGarden=]]]. Justified, as he needed air.
* VagueAge: Probably around 20-21 (not counting the time skip).
* WeaksauceWeakness: All Dragon Slayers seem to suffer from Natsu's problems with transportation.
** Gajeel notes that he never used to have this problem until the Grand Magic Games where Sting comments that it is a mark of a true Dragon Slayer (and indeed Wendy, the youngest slayer, seems fine with transport).
* TheWorfEffect: In the omake/OVA Fairy Academy, Erza whacks him with a iron pipe.
** In a few arcs he seems to exist to show how strong the new enemy is (such as his fight with the mooks from Grimoire Heart)
* WorthyOpponent: He sees Natsu as his, and (presumed) vice versa. After Gajeel saves Natsu's life from Laxus for the first time, he tells Laxus that he is going to be the one to take Natsu down.
* WouldHitAGirl: As [[TheCutie Levy]] and [[TheChick Lucy]] can attest.
** The anime takes this UpToEleven. In the manga, when Lucy is captured Gajeel ties her to the wall and chucks knives near her head. Harsh, but more intimidating rather than damaging. In the anime, [[FamilyUnfriendlyViolence he just straight-out wails on her]].
* YouShallNotPass: To Yomazu and Kawazu.

An Exceed who, unlike Happy and Carla, was born and raised in Edolas. He was exiled from his home country for aiding an injured human, Mystogan, leading him to side with the humans as Commander of the 1st Magical Warfare Division in the Edolas Royal Military. Gajeel later claims him as his cat partner, much like Happy is to Natsu and Carla is to Wendy. Like other Exceed, he can use Aera to fly, and can undergo Battle Mode Shift to return to the larger form he had in Edolas.
* AfraidOfLightning: Displayed during the thunderstorm on Tenrou Island foreshadowing Laxus' return and when Orga first uses his Lightning God Slayer Magic.
* AntiVillain: Before his HeelFaceTurn.
* {{Badass}}: So much so that Gajeel believed he was the flying cat he was searching for.
* BadassAdorable: In his SleepModeSize.
* BadassBaritone: He keeps it in SleepModeSize
* {{BFS}}[=/=]CoolSword: His WeaponOfChoice.
** To put in perspective, his original Bustermarm sword was four times his size. And that size was his original, taller than Gajeel size.
* TheBigGuy: In his PowerTrio with Happy and Carla and the team formed to rescue Lucy from Mercurius.
* CatsAreSnarkers: Not to Carla's extent, thugh
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: His first appearance in the manga without his helmet has him drawn with a patch of hair on his head. This however was dropped afterwards.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Has no actual magic besides his [[VoluntaryShapeshifting Battle Mode Shift]], yet he can punch hard enough to break rock and wield a massive {{BFS}}.
%%* TheComicallySerious

* FluffyTheTerrible: The largest, most muscular Exceed goes by the name Lily.
* FriendToAllChildren: Rather subtle, but it's there. He saves a very young Mystogan's life and lives with him afterwards, gets along very well with Wendy, is at times seen accompanying Alzack and Bisca's daughter Asuka, and Edolas Coco adored him, whereas upon meeting her Earth-land counterpart, [[http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac19/Rem_Rant/PlCo.jpg he's absolutely crushed to find that she hates cats]].

* MorphWeapon: He wields the gigantic Bustermarm sword in the Edolas arc, which is adjustable in size and three times larger than Panther Lily's battle form. However, it's destroyed in his battle with Gajeel.
** In the Sirius Island arc, he acquires a similar sword called the [[Manga/RaveMaster Musica]] [[ContinuityCameo Sword]] from a Grimoire Heart {{mook}}. Thanks to its size-shifting capabilities, he can carry it around even in his chibi form.
* NonHumanSidekick: To Gajeel. [[spoiler:He even joined him as a member of the Magic Council's Detention Enforcement Unit after the second TimeSkip, seemingly as his NumberTwo]].
* NotSoStoic: Gajeel manages to break through to the BloodKnight underneath in their fight, judging by Lily's [[SlasherSmile smile]]. Also, he's [[FearOfThunder afraid of thunder]].

* PowerGivesYouWings: He's an Exceed like Happy and Carla, and can use magic to grow wings and fly.
%%* PowerTrio: The Ego to Happy's Id and Carla's Superego.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Just like his partner.
* RedemptionDemotion: Since his HeelFaceTurn he has become much less effective in fights, mostly because of the limited amount of time he can spend in his battle form since coming to Earth-land.
** It seems to start being subverted over time, such as when he defeats a powerful opponent like Knepper of the Garou Knights, as mentioned above.
* TheRival: The [[{{Filler}} anime-only]] Key of the Starry Sky arc gives him one in [[GeniusBruiser Sam]][[FillerVillain uel]], a fellow Exceed with [[{{SizeShifter}} Battle Mode Shift]]. After each of their fights, Samuel gradually evolves into his FriendlyEnemy and, after Samuel's HeelFaceTurn, their relationship turns into a FriendlyRivalry.
** Happy also considers Lily his own [[FriendlyRivalry friendly rival]] sometimes, usually when it comes to Carla.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** For Happy/Carla.
** It is hinted he could also be this for Gajeel and Levy (his smile when Gajeel becomes Levy's partner for the S-class exam).
* {{Sizeshifter}}: Can change at will from his regular form to the much larger and more combat-oriented Battle Mode.
* SleepModeSize: He is normally human-sized, but is reduced to a size more common for Exceeds in Earthland.
* TheStoic: Next to Carla, he may be among the most serious of the Fairy Tail guild.
* TalkingAnimal: Being an Exceed, he is essentially a talking cat. Or talking panther, depending on what form he is in at that moment.
* VocalDissonance: He has a deep, gruff voice befitting his big, muscular form. In his chibi form, he sounds ''exactly the same''.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: After going to Earth-land, he displays the ability to temporarily transform into his hulking regular body, with all of his strength and sword fighting skills intact.
* WeaksauceWeakness: His thunder phobia can be considered this.

[[folder:Juvia Lockser]]
!!Juvia Lockser
!!!Creator/MaiNakahara (JP), Creator/BrinaPalencia (EN)

A former member of Phantom Lord's elemental magic specialist group, Element 4, where she is also known as "Juvia of the Great Sea". Her magic is Water, letting her turn into water and create and manipulate water as she chooses. She develops a romantic obsession with Gray while fighting him as a member of Phantom Lord, which is the main reason why she joins Fairy Tail after her old guild is disbanded.
* ActionGirl: Indeed. She's a powerful wizard, one of the strongest of the Phantom Lord guild. Her entire body is made out of water!
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair is turquoise in the manga, but dark blue in the anime.
* AlmightyJanitor: The above only seems to be with regards to official rank, however. In terms of power level, it's worth noting that, despite being one of the newer members of the guild, she was actually chosen to be one of the participants for the S-Class exam.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: She has been shown to be quite adept in analyzing situation.
** A good example of this would be in the Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc, when she fights Aries. She regains her strength, which was sapped from having to travel for miles in the desert, by [[spoiler: breaking the car Aries was driving open and releasing engine coolant onto her body]].
* AnimeHair: Her introductory hairstyle has her hair curled into rings around the back of her head. Her later hairstyles drop this entirely.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Erza in the Sirius Island arc.
* {{Badass}}: Many times she's been shown to be very powerful.
* BadassAdorable: Despite her badassery, she's just a big softie.
* BareYourMidriff: In her battle against Merudy as a result of ClothingDamage.
* BattleInTheRain: Her battles with Gray and Merudy.
* BerserkButton: Do '''not''' even so much as ''think'' of harming a hair on Gray's head in her presence, or you will be [[{{Yandere}} very]], ''[[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend very]]'' [[UnstoppableRage sorry]].
** Whenever Gray is in danger for his life, she will almost certainly and instantly [[TookALevelInBadass take a level in badass]] in her rage and and instinct to protect Gray, resulting in her opponent being [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] without prejudice.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Gets possessed by Vidaldus Taka in the Tower of Heaven arc.
%% DO NOT add anything about Juvia using first-person pronouns more often over time. Juvia still speaks in the third person in Japanese and the official manga translation. The decision for fan translations to use first-person pronouns in place of Japanese phrases that require no pronouns does not indicate character development. Please refrain from using fan translations in place of official material. Read this Tumblr post for more information: http://thefairystales.tumblr.com/post/93576212697/juvia-still-speaks-in-third-person-chapter-394
* CombinationAttack: Essentially Unison Raid, which she performs with Lucy and [[ShipTease Gray]].
* ContraltoOfDanger: Her voice in the Creator/FUNimation dub is quite a bit deeper than her Japanese voice.
* ChewingTheScenery: Whenever she gets pissed, she tears whatever scene she's in to shreds.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Flies into a rage when she first thinks Gray is in love with Lucy and subsequently attaches herself to Gray whenever Lucy shows up. Still, as far a jealousy goes it's much more good-natured than the norm ClingyJealousGirl standard: bragging to Lucy whenever Gray praises her is about the extent of it. The fact that Lucy is one of her best friends, and there is no truth to Lucy trying to steal Gray away from Juvia helps matters.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}:
** She believes that she and Lucy are romantic rivals for Gray's affection, despite Lucy's repeated, and loud, objections.
** She celebrates the 413th day since she met Gray as if it were an anniversary. Not for any special reason, like if they had met on April, 13. Just because it's been 413 days since she met Gray.
%%* ComicallyMissingThePoint
* CombatPragmatist: Although not shown often, Juvia is actually very pragmatic in her fighting style. In her fight with Merudy, she used the water around her to use attacks that Merudy couldn't block due to the amount of water, then followed it up with another attack. [[spoiler: In her battle with Keyes, she allowed herself to be absorb by his attacks, so she could destroy him from the inside out.]]
* ContraltoOfDanger: When she was still an antagonist in Phantom Lord. She did drop back down during her ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend scene against Meredy.
* CovertPervert: In one of her word-twisting moments, she mixes up "heated battle" with "[[PrimalScene heated grappling]]." She needs a dictionary.
* CreepyMonotone: Her normal manner of speaking before meeting Gray.
* CrushFilter: Especially early on, Juvia likes to fantasize about Gray being a total {{Bishonen}}.
* CueTheSun: When she finally sees the sun, she takes it as a sign that she has been freed from her past.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Blue hair and blue eyes. It makes sense: her powers are water-based.
* DarkChick: Of the Element 4.
* DarkIsNotEvil: A bit of a sore spot for her until Gray defeats her.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: She joins Fairy Tail after Gray defeated her.
* DefectingForLove: She switches from Phantom Lord to Fairy Tail so she may pursue her feelings for (read, "[[StalkerWithACrush stalk]]") Gray. In this case, however, Phantom Lord was already on its way to disbandment by the time she started following him, leaving her with nowhere else to go.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Quite fast thanks to her crush on Gray.
* {{Delinquents}}: In the second OVA.
* {{Determinator}}: Juvia deserves particular mention in the Sirius Island Arc. At one point she ''breaks her own leg'' in order to secure the advantage, then, unable to walk, pursues an enemy by ''pulling herself with her hands'' across the island. There's also a healthful serving of FridgeLogic there, as Juvia has been established to be [[NighInvulnerability made of water]] and immune to physical damage.
** The above FridgeLogic though is still explainable as magic attacks can still hurt her, so self-inflicted wounds using her own magic, are likely possible.
* DoggedNiceGirl: For Gray, though this reaches StalkerWithACrush levels.
* ElementalShapeshifter: Her entire body is water, so she's able to change into other forms.
* EmotionlessGirl: ''Heavily'' subverted. She plays this trope straight in her very first appearance. [[NotSoStoic Then Gray]] [[{{Yandere}} stepped into the picture]].
* EmptyEyes: Highlighted the [[EmotionlessGirl trope above]] at first, but she continues to be regularly drawn with these even after she TookALevelInCheerfulness.
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: She is given a French accent in the Tagalog and Animax English dub.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: While being brainwashed by Vidaldus.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: After joining Fairy Tail, she cuts her hair short to signify her [[TookALevelInCheerfulness cheerier personality]]. However, she [[HairReboot instantly grows her hair back]] in [[PersonalRaincloud despondence]] when she discovers that the Gray in [[BizarroUniverse Edolas]] was in love with her own Edolas counterpart, who had the same hairstyle as she did before. She later [[LettingHerHairDown lets her hair down completely]] in the Grand Magic Games arc when she decides to be more open with her love for Gray.
* {{Flanderization}}: In the manga, treating Lucy as a "love rival" pretty much stops after the Fighting Festival arc. In the anime, it continues even past the TimeSkip.
** Even within the manga, her approach toward Gray was originally a lot more reserved (which left Gray oblivious to her feelings), compared to how she acts towards him now.
* FriendlessBackground: She didn't have any friends as a child, due to making it rain everywhere she went.
* GoingCommando: The Tartaros arc has her with leg-line so high you can tell she's not wearing anything down there.
* {{Goth}}: She shows shades of this in her first appearance with her gloominess and wearing a doll on her clothing.
* GratuitousSpanish: Her name comes from the word "lluvia", which is Spanish for "rain".
* GrayRainOfDepression: She used to cause this unconsciously with her magic, and was shunned as a result. [[spoiler:She causes this again while she stays at Amefurashi Village after Fairy Tail disbands, alone and heartbroken that Gray has left her for six months]].
* GuestStarPartyMember: In the Tower of Heaven arc, before she joins the guild proper.
* HairReboot: Reverts to her original look after finding out that in [[BizarroUniverse Edolas]], [[ComicallyMissingThePoint Gray is in love with her]].
* HeelFaceTurn: She joins Fairy Tail after Phantom Lord was disbanded.
* HeroicSacrifice: Pulls one off for Cana when they are forced to battle each other in the Fantasia arc to prove that she really loves everyone in Fairy Tail, not that Cana needed convincing. [[CaptainObvious She survives]].
* HiddenBuxom: It's not easy to tell unless she's suffered ClothingDamage, mind.
* HighHeelFaceTurn: The only female member of Element 4 and the only one to make a HeelFaceTurn.
* HopelessSuitor: Strangely even though her imagination goes wild in regards to Gray, her love chart indicate that she thinks she is this.
* HypocriticalHumor: Juvia is madly in love with Gray and sees Lucy as a rival, despite her constant protests. Lyon is madly in love with her and Chelia views her as a rival, despite her constant protests.
* ImaginaryLoveTriangle: : She misinterprets something Gray's DeclarationOfProtection towards Lucy to mean he is in love with her, and thus believes her to be a rival in love. This eventually spirals out of control until she believes that she's in a LoveDodecahedron.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: Starts out as a Gray's StalkerWithACrush, but eventually evolves into this.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: In the second OVA.
* InnocentCohabitation:[[spoiler: With Gray after the guild disbands, though the "innocent" part was forced by Gray.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: In the 413 Days Fairy Tail side story, she decides to celebrate the "anniversary" of the 413th day since she met Gray and knits a scarf for him as a gift, but she tries to give it to Gray and get him to celebrate, he's not in a good mood and Lyon tells her that day it's the anniversary of his teacher Ur's death.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Becomes this to Gray, feeling that she has no right to love him after [[spoiler:she kills Silver, Gray's father, by taking down Keyes, the {{Necromancer}} who was keeping him alive. Instead of getting mad, he thanks her for freeing his father.]]
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Calm and poised when attacking with Water spells from afar.
* LadyOfWar: She's a ProperLady when not hammy or jealous, and is very composed and dignified even in the heat of combat.
* TheLancer: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the TournamentArc. And later the SixthRanger and TheChick on the combined team in the same arc.
* LargeHam: Fond of ChewingTheScenery whenever she gets pissed.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMkmQlfOJDk Jean-Sébastien Bach - Air on G String]]. Plays nearly every time she appears at first, but less frequently after she joins Fairy Tail.
** Portions of "''Music/AlsoSprachZarathustra''" occasionally play during her [[ChewingTheScenery scenery-chewing moments]].
* LetsGetDangerous: Whenever Gray's life is in danger, Juvia will almost certainly and instantly [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} get her head out of the clouds]] in her rage and protect him, resulting in her opponent being [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] without prejudice. When so, she is perhaps one of few characters in Fairy Tail universe that could make ''Erza'' stutter in fear when she is angry.
* LimpAndLivid: When Merudy threatens to kill Gray.
* LonelyDollGirl: Juvia had no friends as a child because it would always rain when she was around. As a result, she made a ''teru teru bozu'' doll. In Japanese folklore, these dolls are supposed to stop or prevent the rain, which suddenly makes the scene in the anime where she's crying while mass producing these all the more meaningful.
* LoveAtFirstSight: With Gray in the Phantom Lord arc.
* LoveChart: She makes one after Lyon falls in love with her.
* MadLove: Even after Gray flat out tells her he's not interested in her, Juvia fails to catch the message and keeps stalking him just like usual.
* MakingASplash: She doesn't just control water, she ''is'' the water.
* MeaningfulName: Her name is derived from the Spanish word lluvia which means rain.
* NakedInMink: Though its rarely brought up, the manga artwork seems to indicate that Juvia doesn't weat anything other than her underwear beneath her coats, with some artwork hinting she doesn't even bother with that much.
* NiceHat: Her first outfit included a big Russian-style hat, and she always shown wearing hat to go with her clothes.
* NighInvulnerable: Her body is made of water, making her impervious to physical attacks.
* OcularGushers: She can cry a literal river that flood Fairy Tail Guild hall, which nearly drowns everyone.
* OddFriendship: With Aquarius; they get along [[IncrediblyLamePun swimmingly]].
* ParasolOfPrettiness: She's a (or rather was a) [[GrayRainOfDepression Rain Woman]]. Though technically it would be a parapluie as it is an umbrella.
* PerkyGoth: Her gloomy facade is easily broken after her first appearance, [[SugarandIcePersonality showing herself to be perky and the complete opposite to her usual personality]]. This is especially prominent when she's around Gray.
* PowerIncontinence: It rains wherever she goes, at least until Gray beats her.
* PrettyInMink: Most of her costumes are distinctly Russian fur getups.
* ProgressivelyPrettier: At her introduction, she looks rather gloomy, and many fans actually describe her as ugly back then when they reread the chapters. Nowadays, she is at least as cute as the other Fairy Tail girls and as busty as [[BoobsOfSteel Erza.]] She was also ranked 3rd in Miss Fairy Tail contest.
* ProperLady: When she's not being a LargeHam or ClingyJealousGirl, she's rather demure and composed. She is also perhaps the only girl whose feminine skill is shown the most often in Fairy Tail, in her first attempt to woe Gray she gave him an elaborately decorated bento with his face on it, she also could bake bread, and her room is filled with Gray merchandise that undoubtedly handmade.
* PunchClockVillain: In the Phantom Lord arc. Unlike many of the other Phantom Lord members who are evil bastards, she is just a regular mage doing her job for a legal guild, and that job happens to be catching Lucy and later defending against Fairy Tail's attack. She does [[TookALevelInKindness take a level in kindness]] when she leaves Phantom Lord, though.
* RedemptionDemotion: Her rank in Phantom Lord is the equivalent of Fairy Tail's S-Class. While in Fairy Tail she gets a literal demotion, like Gajeel, and has to take the annual exam to achieve the S-Class rank. Her power level arguably [[RedemptionPromotion increases]].
* SatelliteCharacter: Most, if not all of her characterization comes from her obsession towards Gray. While she does have some character to her, her involvement is often less then liked by the fans and comes across as very under-developed at times.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Natsu/Lucy, though that's probably because it means less competition for Gray.
* ShippingGoggles: InUniverse example. She suffers from such a bad case of this that she's absolutely convinced that she's in the middle of a LoveDodecahedron.
** In the Juvia-centric 413 Days Fairy Tail side story, her goggles even causes her to see vivid [[{{Hallucinations}} visions]] of Natsu and Lucy cosying up really close to each other and Levy and Gajeel sharing a very passionate kiss in the guild's Main Hall.
* ShootTheDog: In the Tartaros arc, [[spoiler:Juvia is forced to kill the {{Necromancer}} Keyes knowing that Silver, Gray's undead father, will only stay around with his son for as long as Keyes lives. If she hadn't, Keyes would've activated the Face bomb using the undead Council chairman. When the deed is done, [[DirtyBusiness she feels she's no longer worthy of Gray's love]]]].
* ShowerShy: She's shown to be very uncomfortable bathing with the other girls at the Fairy Hills baths.
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: Pre-CharacterDevelopment.
* SilkHidingSteel: Normally she's quite demure, but don't get on her bad side.
* SingleTargetSexuality: She is Gray-sexual.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: She was obsessed with Gray from the first time she met him.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it "Juvia" or "[[GratuitousSpanish Lluvia]]"? Also her last name. Is it "Lockser" or "Loxar"?
* StalkerWithACrush: PlayedForLaughs. Before joining Fairy Tail, she secretly followed Gray everywhere he went and her room is filled with all sorts of Gray-themed items and dolls.
* StalkerShrine: PlayedForLaughs, her entire apartment on Fairy Hills can best be describe as a love shrine to everything Gray, right down to her Gray avatar-shaped shower loofah.
* StalkingIsFunnyIfItIsFemaleAfterMale: Juvia's stalking is largely PlayedForLaughs but if it was the other way around, it would probably not be funny at all for people.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Has shades of this during her earliest appearances. Normally a rather gloomy EmotionlessGirl, her iciness literally melts the moment Gray enters her life. She thus begins alternating between her usual gloominess and gushing over him the moment she so much as hears his name (heaven forbid the one who mentions him is another girl and/or wants him dead), until her warmer personality gradually takes over.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: She literally defeats Merudy by ThePowerOfLove.
* TextileWorkIsFeminine: She knits a scarf for Gray in the 413 Days Fairy Tail side story.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: When it comes to Gray.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Practically all the time to demonstrate her immaturity, though there are a few very rare instances where she uses the pronoun "''atashi''", such as when [[BattleStrip she sees Gray strip for the first time]]. It's dropped entirely in the Funimation dub, though [[{{Woolseyism}} not without reason]] as the dubbers felt it made her sound arrogant rather than childish.
%% DO NOT add anything about Juvia using first-person pronouns more often over time. Juvia still speaks in the third person in Japanese and the official manga translation. The decision for fan translations to use first-person pronouns in place of Japanese phrases that require no pronouns does not indicate character development. Read this Tumblr post for more information: http://thefairystales.tumblr.com/post/93576212697/juvia-still-speaks-in-third-person-chapter-394
* ThirteenIsUnlucky: Juvia is number thirteen on Merudy's list of members to kill.
* TooKinkyToTorture: She demands to be punished by Gray after failing to retrieve Zeref in the Sirius Island arc.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: She was originally somewhat gloomy, but after joining Fairy Tail she become more cheerful. [[spoiler:However after Gray leaves her during the one-year TimeSkip she becomes much more somber]].
* TrueBlueFemininity: She has blue hair and usually wears dark blue clothing, and is reserved and ladylike when not [[LargeHam hammy]] or [[ClingyJealousGirl jealous]]. She's also shown to have traditionally feminine skills such as creating a bento box, baking, and making handmade Gray plushes.
* TwistingTheWords: Often to the point that Lucy can't mention "Gray" in any of her sentences without Juvia getting suspicious. She also has a moment with Lisanna.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Due to her demeanor, Juvia's opponents tends to underestimate her abilities and will to fight. But time and again she has shown the [[{{Determinator}} willpower]] and skills to combat stronger enemies, especially when she [[BerserkButton perceives that Gray is in any sort of danger]] which will then make her almost unbeatable.
* UnknownRival: Juvia considers Lucy her love rival due to a misunderstanding. Even though Lucy has stated more than once that she only sees Gray as a friend, Juvia persists in treating Lucy as a rival. Post HeelFaceTurn, however, they become friends despite Juvia's jealousy.
** When Lisanna volunteers to be Juvia's partner in the S-Class wizard exam, Juvia worries that she might be after Gray too.
** Hilarously, this is reversed on her when Chelia thinks SHE is a rival for Lyon's love, despite Juvia not feeling any romantic feelings for Lyon.
* VerbalTic: "Drip drip drop"(in the dub); disappears after her HeelFaceTurn.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She [[HeroicSecondWind rises from defeat]] after hearing that Merudy wishes to kill Gray, with a look on her face [[DeathGlare that chills]] ''[[{{Badass}} Erza's]]'' blood.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Lucy.
* {{Yandere}}: She's a rather toned-down example: Despite words to the contrary, she's never willing hurt Lucy or anyone else showing affection for Gray outside of being played for laughs. [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend Threaten or harm Gray on the other hand...]]
* YaoiFangirl: She gets grumpy when Gray talks with other girls, but has fantasies of Gray and Lyon being gay for each other after they accidentally end up together on the Love Slide. In the sixth OVA she even gets a {{Nosebleed}} when she thinks that she's seeing Gray and Musica kissing.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She had very bright blue hair. Fittingly, as her entire body is made out of water.

One of the guild's veteran members, as well as Gildarts's daughter. She casts spells using a deck of magic cards. She is the guild's heaviest drinker, constantly drinking entire barrelfuls of alcohol at a time. She also suffers from low self-esteem due to her constant failures at becoming an S-Class wizard, which she thinks would impress her dad. However, she grows out of it.
* ActionGirl: Never backs down from a fight, even against stronger opponents.
* TheAlcoholic: Mostly played for laughs, but she has no desire to stop. She drinks up to ''30 percent'' of Fairy Tail's total alcohol.
* AmbiguouslyBi: While Cana has mentioned having boyfriends and being interested with boys in the past, she also makes a habit of groping her fellow female guild members rather often, especially Lucy after the two became close. She also seemed to enjoy Flare [[CombatTentacles cleaning every nook and cranny of her body with her hair]]. More recently, when Juvia was mystified that Gajeel and Levy seemed to be flirting while on a mission, Cana offered to flirt with Juvia (while groping her) if it would make her feel better.
* BareYourMidriff: Always wears a skimpy bikini top.
* BathtubBonding: With Lucy.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saved the entire guild from Tartaros using her Card Magic.
* BoisterousBruiser: Not as strong as some of the other members of the guild, but she's always ready for a fight and responds to Natsu's challenges often.
* CardsOfPower: Can use her cards for various effects like shooting lightning or creating explosions.
* CoolBigSis: To both Wendy and to the kids at the church orphanage.
%%* CryCute
* DaddyIssues: Her reason for joining Fairy Tail was to meet her father. It still took her years to actually talk to him. Plus given his ReallyGetsAround attitude...
* DeathDealer: She casts spells with a deck of cards.
* {{Delinquents}}: Dresses like one in the second OVA.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Invokes this with her cards when Fried "shows" that scantily-clad woman make him uncomfortable during the S-Class exam.
* EasilyForgiven: Lucy takes Cana betraying her in great stride. One wouldn't even know if Makarov found out about it either, considering neither he nor anyone else in the guild bring it up, but since even Mavis lets her off the hook for it...
* FailureKnight: She has tried the S-Class test four times before the series began, but never succeeded. Her fifth exam is cancelled before it can be finished.
* FortuneTeller: Though it's unclear whether this is part of her Card Magic or just a standard magic trick.
* GivingTheSwordToANoob: Fairy Glitter. She gets it for a short-time loan in the Sirius Island arc, and only because she finds Mavis's grave before the others in time of need, and it turns out that even with that magic in her possession, she's incapable of using it correctly. In the end, she's defeated and she loses the magic as soon as she uses it.
** [[SubvertedTrope Subverted later]] in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]], where Mavis gives her the spell again for a [[PowerLevels Power Level]] challenge. Cana manages to pull off the spell and outperform every other contestant.
%%* GodivaHair
* GoodBadGirl: Her personality definitely fits, with her heavy drinking and skimpy clothes.
* HiddenDepths: [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded by Mavis]] during the [[PowerLevels MPF Event]] in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]] that, as Gildarts daughter and heir, she has an enormous amount of latent magic. This allows her to correctly use Fairy Glitter and easily win the event outright, implying that she has the potential to become one of the most powerful wizards in Fairy Tail.
** She's also very quick to note things about her friends when they seem off. This allows her to save the whole guild from being destroyed by Tartaros when she realizes Elfman is acting odd since he "gave up" on saving Lisanna.
* IdiotBall: During the Sirius Island arc, she believes the test is still going despite the island and her fellow guildmates being under attack. Thankfully, she comes to her senses.
%%* ImpossibleHourglassFigure
* TheLadette: She's the heaviest drinker in Fairy Tail, and she's always eager to fight. She also occasionally speaks in masculine Japanese.
* LamarckWasRight: She inherited her father's enormous magic power.
* LukeYouAreMyFather: Her motivation for becoming an S-Class wizard is to tell Gildarts that he is her father, because she thinks standing on equal footing with him will give her the confidence she needs to do so. Once she realizes she doesn't need to achieve the rank, she tells him anyway.
* MeaningfulName: Hers came from Major "Arcana" of tarot cards. It means Secret, referring to the fact that Gildarts is her father.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: She betrays the guild that raised her, and the friend who agreed to help her and did all the work, in favor of passing an exam that she fully well knew was suspended in the first place. She then realizes what she's done and goes back to fight.
* NeverGetsDrunk: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] when she's beaten in a drinking contest against Bacchus.
* OhCrap: Upon realizing that even with Fairy Glitter, she doesn't stand a chance against Bluenote.
* OrphanageOfLove: Revealed in omake to have lived in one after her mother died.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her mom died and she was sent to live with her dad, Gildarts, who didn't recognize her.
* ReadingsAreOffTheScale: Uses Fairy Glitter in the PowerLevels challenge of the Grand Magic Games. Even [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded by the judges when she scored 9999.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Goes on one against Fried when he makes Juvia [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice herself]], but doesn't manage to finish him off.
* SixthRanger: Of Team Fairy Tail's B Team in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]].
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Cana is mostly seen as a minor side character from the start of ''Fairy Tail'' up to the end of the Edolas arc, but once the Sirius Island arc gets going, the manga spends a great deal showing and developing her character, getting the same attention as pretty much anyone from the core characters. After the Sirius Island arc ends, however, she steps back a little and becomes one of the major supporting characters, since her character development warranted it.
* StatuesqueStunner: Cana is just over 5'8", according to the [[http://www.narutoforums.com/showthread.php?t=946857 official height chart]].
* TearsOfFear: [[spoiler:When Acnologia reappears toward the end of the Tartarus arc.]]
* TearsOfRemorse: She cries her eyes out once she realizes that she had abandoned Lucy in favor of becoming an S-Class wizard.
* TookALevelInBadass: She obtains one of the three sacred magics of Fairy Tail, of which Fairy Law is a part of. Unfortunately, just because she gains the magic doesn't mean she knows how to use it. She manages to get a better handle on the spell when Mavis gives it to her again for the Grand Magic Games.

* BoisterousBruiser: He prides himself on his strength and manliness.
* BookDumb: Related to his BerserkButton. However, even outside of books Elfman is not especially smart...
* BridalCarry: To Evergreen, after being defeated by Rusty Rose.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Tends to be easily moved by displays of kindness.
* CurbStompBattle: After he finally completely transforms, Monsieur Sol doesn't last long. Must be a family tradition.
* DarkSkinnedBlond: White-haired variation.
* DealWithTheDevil: Had to make one of these with Seilah of Tartaros, in order for her sister Lisanna to be spared. She would stop using her [[PeoplePuppets Macro Curse]] in order to force him to strangle her to death in exchange for his 'soul,' and sure enough, he is later seen rampaging through Fairy Tail as a FrankensteinsMonster-like abomination, clearly under the effects of DemonicPossession.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: Makes one against Rusty Rose so that he can use his own right arm against him through Take Over, which actually proves to be a distraction so that he could crush his glasses for Evergreen to petrify him. It doesn't work, due to Rusty Rose's RealityWarper powers.
* DemonicPossession: See DealWithTheDevil.
* {{Determinator}}: Probably the only one who can outdo ''Natsu'' in this. His solution to fighting [[DrunkenMaster Bacchus]], who was too fast and erratic for him to even land a hit, was to transform into a Lizardman with spiked scales. He then told Bacchus that it would be a battle to see which could take more punishment, his body or Bacchus' hands.
* ForcedToWatch: Seilah's [[PeoplePuppets Macro Curse]] isn't MindControl, which means he was perfectly aware of the fact that his body was being used to strangle Lisanna to death. He was forced to make a DealWithTheDevil to spare her life.
* FluffyTheTerrible: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] by WordOfGod; he thought the name sounded cute.
* {{Fundoshi}}: Wears one with a character meaning "man" on it.
* GameFace: Full-Body Takeover
* GeniusBruiser: Maybe not genius, but he's certainly smarter than he seems and is capable of thinking up quick and clever plans, notably his plan to take down Rusty Rose and his clever use of his transformations against Bacchus.
* GentleGiant: Before Lisanna's death. He's still pretty gentle with those he cares about, though.
* GuestStarPartyMember: During the Phantom Lord arc.
* HotBlooded: Because of his MANLINESS.
* HotBloodedSideburns: After his three-month training session for the Grand Magic Games.
* LargeHam: A hot blooded bruiser who always shouts about how things are "manly".
* LightningBruiser: His Weretiger transformation.
* ManlyTears: After he saves Mirajane from being killed by Phantom Lord. Also, when he is reunited with Lisanna.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: He's a pretty big guy, but gets (literally) thrown around easily by the likes of Natsu and Gray. In battle, however, he's not considered weak.
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya: Pulls this in order to save Mirajane from Phantom Lord. His newfound power [[WorfEffect isn't enough to do the same again]] against many other enemies, though.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Upon Lisanna's return and hearing some of the guild members commenting on Lisanna's cute appearance, Elfman begins to knock away from his sister.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Probably so that he matches his sisters.
* NighInvulnerability: His Lizardman transformation gives him spiked scales that are {{Made of Diamond}} and virtually impervious to physical damage. It lets him win his fight against the heavy-hitting Bacchus when their battle turns into an EnduranceDuel.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Gives one to Sol after doing a full body Take Over, to the the point were he begs for death. It's well deserved after what he did to him though.
* OurWerebeastsAreDifferent: Like his sisters, he posses beasts, which are shown to be different from the animals that Lisanna posses.
* PartialTransformation: His Beast Arm ability only lets him transform his right arm. Even after regaining his Full-Body Take Over, he still uses this from time to time.
* PowersViaPossession: Like his sisters, he is a Take Over wizard, specializing in Beasts.
* RealMenCook: According to Lisanna.
* RedBaron: "Beast Arm" Elfman
* ScarsAreForever: He has one scar along his right cheek.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Concerning Evergreen.
* ShipTease: He's been getting some with Evergreen from the Sirius Island arc onwards.
* ShounenHair: After Lisanna's death.
* SixthRanger: Stands in for Wendy during the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]].
* StoneWall: His Lizardman transformation.
* TestosteronePoisoning: He is always talking about the concept of manliness, refusing to believe that something unnatural could be attributed to anything but an [[{{Badass}} awesome man]].
* TopHeavyGuy: After the three month training TimeSkip.
* VerbalTic: Usually ends a sentence with "''otoko''" ("man") or something similar.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: He usually just transforms his arm, but he's capable of doing a Full Body Takeover.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: He got smacked around by Bacchus because all he could do was shapeshift and smash things, leaving him at the mercy of a much trickier and faster opponent. He then pulls out a StoneWall transformation that will cut up Bacchus's hands with every strike.
* TheWorfEffect: A victim of this in his battles with Evergreen and Rusty Rose.

!!Lisanna Strauss
!!!Voiced by: Creator/HarumiSakurai (JP), Creator/CarrieSavage (EN)

The younger sister of Mirajane and Elfman. She uses a form of Take Over magic called Animal Soul to transform her body into those of animals. She was killed in an accident while on a mission with her siblings two years ago. Until it's revealed she survived and was teleported to Edolas. After the Edolas arc, she rejoins the guild.
%%* ActionGirl
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She and her older siblings were hated by townspeople for Mirajane's Take-Over powers when they were kids.
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime gives her relationship with Natsu a lot more focus.
* {{Animorphism}}: Her style of Take-Over magic allows her to take on the attributes of animals.
* CatGirl: Due to her particular brand of [[PowersViaPossession Take Over]], Animal Soul, she can turn herself into a white tiger-girl.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Apparently with Natsu before her death. Subverted, since she later comes back, but nothing has happened between them. But that doesn't stop the anime producers, though, who've been proven to be huge Lisanna fans, adding in anime filler scenes between the two, such as their little wedding moment together in Episode 163.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: In a joking way with Natsu.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: When she [[spoiler: arrived in Edolas, she reluctantly took the identity of her Edolas counterpart (who by then was already dead) as soon as everyone in the Edolas Fairy Tail guild welcomed her (thinking she's their Lisanna) so as not to bring everyone needless grief, especially to Edolas' Mirajane and Elfman.]] [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] by the end of the Edolas arc when Edolas' Mirajane and Elfman reveal that they later found out who she really was all along but kept quiet about it.

%%* FeminineWomenCanCook
* FragileSpeedster: She classifies herself as this.
%%* GenkiGirl
* TheGlomp: To Natsu during their reunion.
* HartmanHips: While her bust isn't as ridiculously large as some of her fellow guild mates, her hips seem very large and shapely by comparison.
* HesJustHiding: InUniverse. It turns out she wasn't killed during Elfman's rampage, but simply knocked out and got caught in one of the Anima portals that transported her to Edolas. Though [[FridgeLogic one has to wonder how Mirajane could watch Lisanna's body suddenly disappear and misinterpret it as dying]]. She was right there when it happened.
* IChooseToStay: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. While this ''is'' her initial choice when Earth-land's Natsu and Happy appear at the Edolas Fairy Tail, as she doesn't want to upset Edolas' versions of her siblings, it is rendered moot once the Anima is reversed, forcing her to return to Earth-land. It also turns out Edo!Mirajane and Edo!Elfman knew her little secret all along, and they wish her well as she heads back.

%%* InnocentBlueEyes
* ItsAllMyFault: Feels responsible for Mirajane's HeroicSacrifice against Azuma in the Sirius Island arc. It actually ''is'' her fault, but Elfman assures her that their opponents are too strong for them anyway.
* KillTheCutie: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted.]]
* KindheartedCatLover: Noted to like cats in her guild card.
* TheLostLenore: She and Natsu were close when they were kids and her death affected him greatly. It's ultimately revealed that she didn't die.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Just like her brother and sister.
* NotQuiteDead: She's been in Edolas all along.
* OutOfFocus: You'd think that someone who plays a huge part in Natsu's background development would be high up on the established side-character list, or, at the very least, begin to hang around Natsu again due to their childhood friendship. That has not been the case ever since her return from Edolas.
* PartialTransformation: Though she is also adept at the Full-Body version.
* PinkMeansFeminine: She used to wear pink dresses when she was younger.
* PlayingHouse: The anime has her doing this as a child, with Natsu as her husband and Happy as their child.
* ThePollyanna: According to Natsu, she always had a smile on her face no matter the circumstances.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died about two years before the start of the series. Subverted when it's revealed that she was instead transported to Edolas somehow.
* PowersViaPossession: Like her siblings, she also used transformation magic.
* ShamefulStrip: She's found naked in a prison cell after Tartarus captures her.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Natsu/Lucy, especially in the anime. She also ships Elfman/Evergreen.
* ShipTease: With Natsu.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Lisanna" or "Lisana"? WordOfGod says it's the former.

[[folder:Levy [=McGarden=]]]
!!Levy [=McGarden=]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/MariyaIse (JP), Kristi Kang (EN)

A member of Team Shadow Gear, one of many wizard teams that make up the backbone of Fairy Tail alongside her friends Jet and Droy. She is close friends with Lucy. Her magic is called Solid Script, which lets her transform anything she writes into solid objects.
* ACupAngst: Dislikes Taurus because he compliments Erza's boobs.
** It's actually so extreme that when she dances next to Lucy and sees how much more Lucy's breasts jiggle than hers, she is reduced to tears and feels like she is being punished.
*** Worst of all, some of the first few manga covers made it seem she had breasts as large as any other girl in the series.
* ActionGirl: One of Fairy Tail's most treasured members.
%%* {{Adorkable}}
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Her very obvious crush on Gajeel, though notable in that she started out scared of him ([[BreakTheCutie for good reason]]) before later interactions vastly improved their relationship.
* AscendedExtra: WordOfGod says that Levy was meant to be a background character alongside her team. However, she started popping up more and more frequently until she rose to prominence, and even more so than Jet and Droy.
* {{Badass}}: Though she doesn't get in on as much action as other members, she is more competent than she thinks she is. She is even chosen as a contender for the S-Class exam, which means a lot considering who the others are.
* BadassAdorable: Cute, tiny, and kicks tons of ass!
* BadassBookworm: Books ''are'' her power.
* BadassLongcoat: Not quite as {{Badass}} as Gajeel's, but it's definitely a step up from her usual wear and impressive on her [[spoiler:as a member of the Magic Council]].
* BareYourMidriff: She used to wear an outfit that did this early in the series. She eventually covered up shortly after she and her team were attacked by Gajeel in the Phantom Lord arc.
* BattleCouple: With Gajeel in the Sirius Island arc.
* BearerOfBadNews:
** In the Fantasia arc, she tells Laxus that Makarov is dying to try and get him to stop his assault. [[KickTheDog He tells her he doesn't care]]. Fortunately Poluchka nurses Makarov back to health.,
** In the Sirius arc she tells Erza and Juvia about Grimoire Hearts attack (right after Erza stopped the trial),
** in the Magic Games arc, when she becomes the narrator instead of Lucy.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Gajeel.
* BerserkButton: She hates being called little.
* BreakTheCutie:
** Gajeel viciously attacks her and her team in the Phantom Lord arc, which leaves them hospitalized. She remains terrified of Gajeel even after he joins Fairy Tail, at least until he saves her from Laxus.
** Whatever it is that will happen on July 7th, X791 [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown leaves her in tears with several wounds and a big scar on her head]].
** Hints that she could be a PluckyGirl (even if not as strongly as Lucy or Erza)
* CelibateHeroine: She rejected at least 3 guys who like her, and rather quickly (Jet and Droy, her teammates, and a guy named Dublin). Of course, it's not so much out of a dislike of men or romance as she's currently got her eyes set on [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys Gajeel]].
* CrucifiedHeroShot: Gajeel pins her, Jet, and Droy to a tree like this and brands her stomach with the Phantom Lord symbol, setting off the war between their two guilds.
* CuteBookworm: Since her magic involves reading and turning words into solid object, this is a given.
* TheCutie: She's incredibly endearing and adored by many characters.
* GreenLanternRing: Her Solid Script has the potential to be this.
* HairDecorations: Her bandana. She eventually gives Gajeel one in the Magic Tournament.
* HartmanHips: Noted in [[AllThereInTheManual her profile]].
* TheHeart: She is the first one to dismiss the exam in the Sirius Island arc and stresses that the guild needs to work together in order to defeat their enemies.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Even if her feelings for Gajeel are rather obvious ([[EveryoneCanSeeIt several of her friends noticed it. Jet, Droy, Lucy, Wendy and probably Lily and Cana to name them]]), Levy denies it when Lucy (and Wendy in the anime) teases her about it.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Despite the sheer amount of water threatening to drown her, and the poison dooming her to die in a few minutes, she still swims down to Gajeel to give him air in the Tartarus arc.]]

* NeutralFemale: During Natsu and Gajeel's fight with Laxus in the Fighting Festival arc.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She is 17. Most of her features make her look 12-13, though she, as mentioned above, has the HartmanHips of a developed woman.
* OppositesAttract: With Gajeel; he's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold and Levy is TheHeart. Levy is a [[SquishyWizard Squishy Mage]], Gajeel is MadeOfIron.
* RedShirt: Originally, her sole purpose was to get beat up by Gajeel.
* RememberedICouldFly: In Chapter 397, Levy forgot that she could use Solid Script conjure up [[spoiler: some air]] to [[spoiler: revive Gajeel, who was slowly being drowned and poisoned]], and decided to give him some [[spoiler: in the form of an UnderwaterKiss]]. Gajeel reminded her of her solid script, much to her embarrassment. Justified, as Levy was in a life-or-death situation, and was acting on instinct.
* RescueRomance: She overcame her fear of Gajeel after he blocked Laxus' attack meant for her.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Thanks to the dress she wears during and after the Sirius Island arc.
* SquishyWizard: She's good enough to qualify for the S-Rank exam, but comments that her body is weak.
* StealthPun: Levy [=McGarden=]. She's certainly a source of [[GenkiGirl "levity"]].

* {{Tsundere}}: Type B towards Gajeel, especially in the anime.
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: With Jet and Droy.
* UnderwaterKiss: With [[spoiler: Gajeel Redfox]]. Justified, as he needed air.
* VocalDissonance: Her voice in the English dub is a bit deeper than what one would expect for a character who looks like she could be only twelve.
** However, [[http://fairytail.wikia.com/wiki/Levy_McGarden the wiki]] reveals that her official age, [[spoiler: even before the TimeSkip]], is actually '''17''' (her birthday is X767). Knowing that, her deeper voice actually makes a bit more sense.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has bright blue hair.

* TheAtoner: Makes up for his actions during the Fantasia arc by letting Cana and Lucy win during their battle in the Sirius Island arc.
* {{Badass}}: Although not meant for combat, his runes are effective even against people as powerful as ''Makarov''. He also manages to hold his own against Mirajane when she uses Satan Soul and defeats Rusty Rose, who easily defeated Evergreen and Elfman, with Bixlow.
%%* BadassBaritone

* BigDamnHeroes: With Bixlow in the Sirius Island arc to save Levy, Lisanna, Lily, and the injured Fairy Tail members from Rusty Rose.
* {{Bishonen}}: He even has a BeautyMark.

* DistractedByTheSexy: Which Cana and Lucy use to their advantage. And then it's revealed that it was just an excuse he used since he was intending to throw the fight. Bixlow just thought that was too silly of a way to lose.

* ManlyTears: The first time is after he is defeated by Mirajane in the Fantasia arc.
** He cries in a more comedic fashion when Laxus returns in the Sirius Island arc.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Fried's objections to Laxus's plans don't stop him from following orders. It's debatable whether he loses this attitude or not. It could be that he's thinking more for himself, or that he doesn't have any issues following Laxus anymore now that he's dropped his JerkassFacade.
* NobleTopEnforcer: {{Subverted}}. Fried objects when Laxus orders him to use lethal force, but the only reason Laxus is telling his subordinates to kill people is because he doesn't have the necessary hatred in his heart to do it himself.
* NotSoStoic: He cries like a baby after meeting Laxus again on Sirius Island.
