Dark guilds are guilds in the ''Manga/FairyTail'' series that act without consent of the Magic Council. They are mainly all criminal organizations, and serve as antagonists in the series. The page also includes cults, which are cut from a different cloth from dark guilds but more or less operate the same way.

''Here be spoilers.''
----
[[foldercontrol]]

!Balam Alliance

The heart of Fiore's criminal network, the Balam Alliance is a union of the three most powerful dark guilds in the kingdom, each controlling its own portion of smaller dark guilds.

[[folder:Balam Alliance in General]]
* EvilPowerVacuum: As the entire backbone of Fiore's criminal underworld, this inevitably happens once all three guilds are defeated.
* NonIndicativeName: Although it's formally called an "alliance", it's more accurate to call it a non-aggression pact between the three guilds.

!Other Dark Guilds

!!!Eisenwald

Eisenwald is the first dark guild Fairy Tail stands against in the series. Once a legal guild, it was supposed to disband by order of the Council because of their unlawful actions. Nevertheless, its members continue to operate as a dark guild, and are out for revenge against those they blame for branding them as criminals.

[[folder:Eisenwald in General]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: Downplayed. At first it seems they are willing to take thousands of innocent lives just to get back at the Magic Council for disbanding their guild. Then it turns out their true targets are the official guild masters, and their previous claims were just to keep the heroes distracted. However, this just makes it [[ItsPersonal that much more personal]] for Fairy Tail.
* GratuitousGerman: Their name is German for "Iron Forest".

[[folder:Erigor]]

[[caption-width-right:225:[[labelnote:Click here for spoiler]]http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grimreaper-ftanime_7483.jpg[[/labelnote]]]]

The ace and acting leader of Eisenwald, notorious for his history of only accepting assassination jobs. He is skilled at using wind magic to attack, defend, and trap opponents.
----
* ArcVillain: Of the Lullaby arc, where he plots revenge against the system that ejected Eisenwald from the official guild league by killing the other guild masters with a cursed flute.
* BadassLongcoat: Wears one when he appears in the Nirvana arc of the anime, which is also the one that Jellal wears later on.
* BlowYouAway: He is a wind wizard, after all.
* DoNotTouchTheFunnelCloud: The whole point of his Wind Wall spell is that the visible part is definitely ''not'' something you want to touch. His Storm Mail spell works under a similar principle, but as a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]] there's still a great deal of wind blowing around the funnel itself.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors: Holds this in [[PlayingWithFire Natsu]]'s face when they fight. [[SubvertedTrope Backfires spectacularly]] [[ConvectionSchmonvection in the end]].
* {{Flight}}: He can use this courtesy of his [[BlowYouAway wind magic]], making him one of the few characters who can do so unaided by wings.
* KnightOfCerebus: Whereas previous villains, while dangerous, were still mostly LaughablyEvil to some degree, Erigor is the first ''Fairy Tail'' villain who has virtually no humorous moments, and whose murderous actions have a serious and personal weight to the heroes.
* RazorWind: His Wind Wall badly cuts up Natsu and Erza's bodies when they try charging through it in the manga, and he's surprised to still see Natsu in one piece after he endures his attacks.
* RedBaron: Earned the title "[[{{Shinigami}} Death God]]" due to his only taking assassination requests.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: About the only thing he wears apart from his pants.
* SinisterScythe: He carries a huge scythe to go with his "Death God" motif.
* TattooedCrook: His torso is covered with tattoos, and he has facial markings below his eyes.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: Downplayed in his return during the Nirvana arc in the anime, where he explicitly states he ''did'' grind in preparation for his rematch with Natsu. Unfortunately for him, Natsu's grinded a hell of a lot more by that point and kicks his ass. Averted in the Key of the Starry Heavens {{Filler}} arc, detailed below.
* WakeUpCallBoss: He is the first antagonist that Natsu couldn't just bash into a wall with raw determination and required actual strategy to defeat.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Natsu mocks him for walking around half-naked, [[HypocriticalHumor despite having no shirt on himself]].
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Lucy fears that Erigor will come back to take revenge after the Lullaby arc. However, he's never seen and barely even mentioned again in the manga after that. This is rectified in the anime thanks to a bit of AdaptationExpansion, where he reappears during the Nirvana arc to have a rematch with Natsu, and later in a {{Filler}} arc as a fully-fledged member of the Neo-Oración Seis.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He's very temperamental and mocking, and he earned his title of "Death God" by his preference for only taking assassination requests.
* WorthyOpponent: During his anime-only rematch with Natsu, he admits that what he'd really hoped for was to fight Natsu again and win.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: His hair is a very pale grayish blue.

!!!In the Key of the Starry Heavens arc

Erigor returns after the TimeSkip as a member of the Neo-Oración Seis, codenamed Grim Reaper. This time he has the power to control the weather in exchange for his memories of his entire life.
----
* BaldOfEvil: He's lost all his hair, and is more intimidating and evil than ever.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: When his brainwashing begins to fade and his memories of Eisenwald return, it is shown that despite the lack of camaraderie in his old guild, he considered his guildmates to be his TrueCompanions.
* ForgetfulJones: As a side-effect of his memory loss, Erigor forgets who Wendy and Bickslow are while he's fighting them.
* TheGrimReaper: Takes up the title as his codename and theme, based on his [[TheRedBaron old title]] as "{{Shinigami}} Erigor".
* GrudgingThankYou: After Wendy heals Erigor, he tells her that while he doesn't intend to be friends with her, he is at least grateful for her help.
* IdentityAmnesia: He has no memory of being Erigor of Eisenwald due to his constant memory loss, and has a much more subdued and creepy personality.
* MindControlEyes: His eyes are a dull, glassy gray as Grim Reaper.
* PowerAtAPrice: He gives up his memories in exchange for power over the TimeSkip. Once he recovers, he admits that living without any memories was the most agonizing experience he has ever gone through.
* ReviveKillsZombie: When Wendy realizes that the memories of his past are physically hurting him, she keeps casting healing spells on him until he recovers all his memories, freeing him from the Oración Seis' control.
* TookALevelInBadass: He's become an official member of the Oración Seis, looks a lot more like TheGrimReaper, and can throw whole hurricanes on people with ease. Too bad he also loses his memory.
* WeatherManipulation: His [[BlowYouAway wind magic]] has been upgraded to this, allowing him to attack with [[DoNotTouchTheFunnelCloud tornadoes]], [[ShockAndAwe lightning strikes]], [[MakingASplash water torrents]], and [[EverythingsBetterWithCows piles of cows]].

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kageyama-ftanime_2184.jpg]]

Erigor's right-hand man. He uses shadow magic to blend into his surroundings.
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: He gets an earlier appearance in the anime when he catches a group of dissenters from Eisenwald who want out of their plan with Lullaby.
* CastingAShadow: He is an accomplished shadow wizard, and can use shadows for a variety of purposes, including CombatTentacles and transportation.
* DarkIsEvil: He is a ruthless and envious wizard who specializes in shadow magic. However, this doesn't stop him from having a HeelFaceTurn.
* TheDragon: He is Erigor's most trusted, prominent, and fleshed out minion.
* DragonTheirFeet: He picks up Eisenwald's plot after Erigor is beaten.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: After he's been wounded and abandoned by his so-called friends, Kageyama thinks that Fairy Tail is only helping him so he can be used as a hostage to bargain with Erigor, rather than out of the goodness of their hearts. It's later subverted when their kindness causes him to hesitate killing their master and ultimately pull a HeelFaceTurn.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Though not as frequently as other characters who exhibit this trope, his eyes are mostly closed when he's exhibiting [[FauxAffablyEvil a pleasant demeanor]].
* FauxAffablyEvil: He strikes up a friendly conversation with a motion-sick Natsu while on the train about all the perks that must come with being in an official guild, and then proceeds to spitefully kick him in the face for having all the things he can't have as a member of an expelled guild.
* GreenEyedMonster: He's extremely jealous of official guilds like Fairy Tail for all the rights they're entitled to, particularly in the female department, while they themselves are discriminated against for being a dark guild.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: His guild's justification for killing him is so they can keep him from helping Fairy Tail dispel the magic wind wall trapping them.
* HeelFaceTurn: He is unable to bring himself to actually kill the guild masters, especially after Natsu and the others help him out, leading to his surrender.
* InSeriesNickname: His friends in the guild call him "Kage-chan", or simply "Kage" in the English dub. It sounds like an AffectionateNickname, but the fact that the people who call him that also leave him for dead proves otherwise.
* InTheBack: Gets stabbed with a knife by Karacka in the manga, and [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice impaled with his whole arm]] in the anime, to keep him from ratting out to Fairy Tail.
* MeaningfulName: "Kage" means "shadow".
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: DoubleSubverted; despite being left for dead by his guild and helped by his sympathetic enemies, Kageyama still betrays them and tries to carry out his guild's plan after Erigor is beaten. But when Makarov has a little heart-to-heart with him, the situation finally sinks in for him, leading to his surrender.
* ShapingYourAttacks: The Orochi Shadow, along with many fist and hand-shaped attacks.
* TheSmartGuy: Is hinted to be highly intelligent due to his [[InformedAbility mastery of sealing magic]].
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Falls victim to this when he comes face to face with Makarov before he can play Lullaby to kill the guild masters.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Has this pulled on him before he can possibly betray Eisenwald. Natsu [[BerserkButton is not amused]].

* {{Gonk}}: He's an unsightly fatass who doesn't even have a nose.
* IntangibleMan: He can phase through solid walls. In the anime, this is how he attempts to kill Kageyama, [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice impaling him on his own arm]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He looks absolutely distraught when he stabs Kageyama InTheBack, and he's later seen apologizing profusely to him as they're being rounded up by the Council.

* AnimeHair: Has a pillar of hair.
* LightEmUp: Appears able to use light magic, though he's beaten by Erza before he can use it. It's clear, however, that [[LightIsNotGood his magic doesn't make him a good guy]].
* MindOverMatter: He uses telekinesis in the manga to fill a glass with beer.
* NoSympathyBetweenMooks: Gives Karacka the order to kill Kageyama before he has a chance to help the enemy.
* TooDumbToLive: Thinks he can take on Erza, even after witnessing her wipe out the bulk of their guild's numbers [[OneManArmy all on her own]] firsthand. [[CurbStompBattle The results are predictable]].

!!!Death's Head Caucus

An assassin's guild known for harboring a trio of powerful wizards known as Trinity Raven. They replace Erza's friends as Jellal's minions once the others switch sides.

[[folder:Death's Head Caucus in General]]
* AdaptationExpansion: We don't see what becomes of them in the manga after they're beaten, implying that they died when the tower fell. The anime however adds a scene to show Fukuro managed to grab Ikaruga and Vidaldus and escape due to his rocket pack. [[spoiler:The exact canonicity of this scene is up for debate, since Ikaruga reappears in the manga as one of Neinhart's [[BackFromTheDead Historias]], but there's nothing to suggest she didn't die of other causes in the intervening ''eight years'' between said events]].
* AnimalThemeNaming: They're all named after birds: "Ikaruga" is a Japanese grosbeak, "Fukuro" is a type of owl, and Vidaldus's last name, "Taka", is Japanese for "hawk".
* BloodKnight: Vidaldus is the AxCrazy type, Fukuro's the one with the facade of justice, and Ikaruga's the more reserved type.
* FusionDance: Either they commonly inhabit Vidaldus' body for the majority of the time or they are summoned when he activates his power.

* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Ikaruga is brought back as a Historia by Neinhart, and gangs up on Erza with Azuma and Kyôka]].
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: After Erza realizes her armor is useless against Ikaruga, she decides their match with a SingleStrokeBattle as Ikaruga kept subjecting Erza to.
* BeautyMark: She has a mole underneath each eye.
* DarkActionGirl: She dominates Erza in their fight, forcing her to reevaluate what exactly makes her an ActionGirl.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She seems to find torture meaningless and distasteful [[spoiler:as expressed by her Historia towards Kyôka]].
* IaijutsuPractitioner: Her attacks are so fast, Erza doesn't realize she's been hit by them until her armors fall apart.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Her first move in battle is to slice all of [[DeathDealer Shô]]'s cards in half ''length''-wise (less than a millimeter) while also cutting Shô himself; in the anime, she even manages to [[BloodlessCarnage cut his nerves without cutting the skin]].
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: She wears her kimono down past her shoulders.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Ikaruga's WeaponOfChoice.
* LadyOfWar: She never loses her serene grace even while attempting to slaughter Erza.
* PlayingWithFire: Her ''Karuda-en'' technique allows her to draw a ring of fire around herself with her sword.

* CannibalismSuperpower: By swallowing enemies whole, he is able to use their magic; the longer they digest, the more he absorbs.
* CombatPragmatist: He studies his "prey" and will exploit any vulnerabilities they have, like Natsu's motion sickness.
* JetPack: Fukuro's jet pack consists of two [[CrazyAwesome ICBM missiles]].
* KnightTemplar: Fukuro thinks of himself as [[JusticeWillPrevail a hero of justice]] punishing evildoers, despite being quite the lawbreaker himself.

A wizard who made a pact with Tartaros, turning him into a demon from the Book of Zeref. He wields the Way of Devolution, an inhuman power that regresses his targets' physical and magical abilities, turning them into children.
----
* AlwaysABiggerFish: After being defeated by Gray, he gets eaten by his own bird mount, which proceeds to chase after Fairy Tail.
* AttackBackfire: Due to the way [[ImaginationBasedSuperpower Maker Magic]] works, Doriath's power ends up being more helpful to Gray than harmful, in spite of weakening his power.
* BerserkButton: When Gray, despite being turned back into a child, is able to fight back and even talk down at him, Doriath gets so angry he loses focus on the Way of Devolution and assumes his demon form to attack Gray.
* BrownNote: In his demon form, his [[FountainOfYouth Way of Devolution]] can be used as a sound wave so that instead of only being able to affect the enemy in front of him, it is able to regress everybody in Sun Village back to their childhood. The downside is that it doesn't discriminate between friend or foe, as seen when it hits his partner Minerva.
* CharacterDeath: Gets gobbled up by the very bird monster that carried him to the Village of the Sun
* CombatPragmatist: He turns his victims into children so that they'll be easier to deal with. He also doesn't waste any time casting it once an enemy is in sight.
* DeathByIrony: After wanting to [[ImAHumanitarian eat Gray]], he himself gets eaten by [[AlwaysABiggerFish a giant, flying monster]].
* DemonOfHumanOrigin: He was once a human guild wizard who was subjected to Tartaros's demonization process, making him an Etherious himself.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: He can still use his magic while in his OneWingedAngel form, but he is no longer capable of aiming (or he just doesn't bother to do so anymore), causing everyone--including [[FriendlyFire Minerva]] and [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Sylph Labyrinth]]--to get hit by it.
* DubNameChange: Funimation changes his "Way of Devolution" to "Art of Regression".
* FangsAreEvil: Even with his mouth shut, he has a lot of fangs jutting out.
* FountainOfYouth: His magic hits his victims with this. According to him, his magic actually affects the magic power of the victim, and their age regression is a secondary effect.
* HulkingOut: He hulks out into a huge demon after Gray sufficiently pisses him off.
* HumiliationConga: Things just don't go well for him once Gray decides to fight him: first he's duped into tumbling over a cliff, and then landing onto a bush that's covered in Demon Slayer ice, which is the equivalent of sitting on a porcupine. To top it off, he gets a pile of shaved ice dumped on his head. Finally, after he proves himself a sufficient threat when angered, he gets gobbled up by a giant cyclops bird.
* ImAHumanitarian: His attempt to eat Gray after turning him into a child seems to be a pretty big indication.
* KryptoniteIsEverywhere: Bordering on TooDumbToLive, as the area he fights in is coated in ice that would severely damage him.
* OneWingedAngel: He assumes his true, giant demon form to fight Gray.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: He's WasOnceAMan who was transformed into a demon by Tartaros.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He has these in the anime, and he is definitely ''not'' a nice guy.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Funimation spells it as "Doriate", which is close to how his name is pronounced.
* StatusBuff: The Way of Devolution's primary effect is to lower the opponent's abilities to their absolute minimum; their transformation into a child is a side effect.
* WasOnceAMan: He was once an ordinary wizard who made a pact with Tartaros, who used their technology to transform him into a demon.
* WouldHurtAChild: He definitely has no problem with beating up adults with the bodies of children.
* WeakButSkilled: Subverted. Gray assumes he uses Way of Devolution on his enemies to make up for his somewhat average power, which seems to match up to how the fight was going. Then he reveals his true colors as a powerful demon.

* MoreThanMindControl: Jellal tells them that Erza had [[DrunkWithPower gone mad with her newfound magical power]] and tried leading them into a trap, and keeps feeding them lies for years to ensure they remain faithful to him.
** The English dub tweaks things a bit by saying that Jellal ensured their loyalty with a mind control spell that only works ''after'' tricking them all the same (which Simon resists thanks to the PowerOfTrust). [[FridgeBrilliance This makes more sense out of their almost insane hostility towards Erza despite their earlier love for her, and their swift return to their original friendliness once they realize they were being manipulated]].
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: To Jellal during the Tower of Heaven arc.
* TrueCompanions: They were this to Erza as a child.

A young man who uses Card Magic to trap others inside cards. He views Erza as an older sister even when he believes that she had betrayed them.

----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: One of the Q&A sections (hosted by Lucy and Mira, no less) notes the problem with this trope since Sho and the others should've been inside the tower for most of the time (except when they kidnapped Erza). Lucy [[WildMassGuessing takes a guess]] and theorizes that Sho could've been working on the outer walls of the tower and spent so much time in the sun that his skin eventually tanned into its current color. Mira accepts this theory, but Lucy points out that it was just a [[ShrugOfGod guess]].
* DarkSkinnedBlonde: This has lead to quite a bit of WildMassGuessing, both among the fandom and InUniverse.
* DeathDealer: Sho's magic involves the use of cards, either as prison dimensions or projectiles.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Sho, who was already quite the fanatic when it came to Jellal, loses it when Erza provides a contradictory version of the past.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for not speaking up about masterminding the escape, resulting in Jellal doing it instead, which in turn results in Erza being taken to the punishment room. Erza doesn't hold it against him, though.

A large man with a missing jaw who uses Darkness Magic. He has a long-standing crush on Erza, and is the only one of her friends who doesn't believe Jellal's lies of her betrayal. He also turns out to be Kagura's older brother.

----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In the manga, his appearance was more brutish and his upper teeth could usually be seen over his metal jaw early on. The anime changed this (as well as his child appearance) into a more "scarred-Bishonen" type appearance. Mashima probably thought making him "a tad ugly" would get the audience to sympathize with him more during his death. [[TearJerker It worked]].
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:He's resurrected as a Historias and used against Kagura, Erza and Jellal]].
* CastingAShadow: He specializes in darkness magic.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He has been in love with Erza since they were kids.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Simon's uses Darkness Magic, yet he is the first to switch to Fairy Tail's side.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: He dies in Erza's arms.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Subverted in that he never actually confesses to Erza, he just thinks it.
** Subverted again as Erza tells Wally that she now knew how he felt all along at the end of the arc.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: All his friends knew about his crush on Erza.
* EyepatchOfPower: To cover his missing eye.
* EyeScream: Simon lost an eye and the lower half of his jaw during the slave revolt.
* GentleGiant: Despite being absolutely massive, he only uses his bulk to shield others.
* GeniusBruiser: Is well informed about Team Natsu's abilities and has heard of the dreaded Trinity Raven before meeting them himself.
* GoodAllAlong: He never was truly working for Jellal.
* GreenEyedMonster: Towards Jellal, since he knew about Erza's feelings for him.
* HeroicSacrifice[=/=]TakingTheBullet: Simon takes an attack meant to kill both Erza and Natsu by himself, [[KilledOffForReal and the results are rather predictable.]]
* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: Eight years ago, he tried to confesses to Erza during the slave revolt. [[RealityEnsues He got blasted in the face doing it.]]

!!!Avatar

Avatar is a cult of black wizards that fills the void left after the Balam Alliance's defeat. They worship Zeref as their god, and seek to force every other wizard in Earth-land to do the same.

[[folder:Avatar in General]]
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7244105b4f54e53e8857a4e6a900a3cd.jpg]]
* AntiClimax: For the so self-proclaimed successors of the Balam Alliance, they are mere child's play compared to previous villains, as they endure a literal CurbStompBattle at the hands of Fairy Tail.
* BlackMagic: The cult's top members each practice in a form of black magic, though how it differs from other forms of magic isn't quite established.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Zeref's will be done."
* CreepyCathedral: This serves as their base of operations, fitting for a cult of black wizards.
* {{Cult}}: They are pretty much the human version of [[OurDemonsAreDifferent Tartaros]]' devotion to Zeref.
* CurbStompBattle: On the receiving end of it by the final battle. Fairy Tail's strongest team practically decimates them without so much as a single scratch on them, and even the war god Alok summons goes down in two punches by Natsu before it can wreak any havoc.
* EvilPlan: Their plan, "Operation Purify", involves wiping out the entire town of Malva to attract Zeref's attention. Little do Alok's followers know is that they are the real sacrifices.
* EvilPowerVacuum: When the Balam Alliance is taken down, Avatar takes over in their place.
* {{Irony}}: They perform their "purification ritual" because they think it will summon Zeref. They actually have this backwards; Zeref doesn't appear because of a large number of deaths, a large number of deaths occur because of [[InstantDeathRadius Zeref's appearance]].
* MassOhCrap: Their general reaction when Fairy Tail's strongest team returns and starts mowing down their numbers.
* MeaningfulName: In Hinduism, an avatar is a deliberate descent of a deity to Earth, or a descent of the Supreme Being and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation".
* {{Mooks}}: Like any dark guild, they have a large amount of flunkies at their disposal to act as Fairy Tail battle fodder.
* NotWhatISignedUpFor: Alok never told his other members that his plan banked on them being defeated so that he can unleash a war god and sacrifice them to it. Needless to say, they're utterly horrified once they find out.
* ReligionOfEvil: Worships Zeref as a living deity, much like Tartaros and Grimoire Heart.
* ReverseMole: Avatar suspects one of its members to be leaking information to the Magic Council. It turns out there are actually two moles: Levy is the Council member in question, masquerading as a rank-and-file cultist; Gray, who infiltrated the cult's inner circle, has his own separate agenda with Erza.
* TemptingFate: They're confident that their numbers of 2,000 or so members are more than enough to stop Natsu's little band. They realize only too late that [[OneManArmy plowing through waves of enemies is their thing]].
* WantedPoster: They have their own wanted poster with a high amount of Jewels.
* TheWorfEffect: They're built up as the next big threat on the face of Ishgal after the Balam Alliance (Oración Seis, Grimoire Heart and Tartaros). To their dismay, each and every one of their top members are mere CanonFodder set up to give Fairy Tail an easy victory before their ''real'' greatest challenge.

The high priest of Avatar. A faithful follower of black magic, he concocts a plan for a certain ritual to "purify" the world on behalf of Zeref.
----
* AllAccordingToPlan: He saw the defeat of his cult's members long beforehand, [[spoiler:because he never intended anyone, even his fellow cultists, to survive anyway]].
* ArcVillain: He serves as one in the second half of the Fairy Tail Revival arc.
* BadBoss: [[spoiler:He offers up his own followers as sacrifices to Ikusa-Tsunagi without their know-how or consent, all out of his devotion to Zeref]].
* BadassCape: One that covers his entire body.
* BadassPreacher: He exudes this in spades with the intimidating calm he shows while commanding his troops.
* BarrierWarrior: His specialty in magic is creating barriers that can stop anything in their tracks... at least before [[TheJuggernaut Natsu]] comes along]].
* CoolMask: He covers his entire face with an iron mask.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: He's so blindly devoted to his cause that he scoffs at things like friendship and family values.
* FacialHorror: He wears a mask to hide the fact that he burned the skin off of his face as his price for summoning Ikusa-Tsunagi. We only get a glimpse of his scarred visage when Natsu cracks it.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: He serves no role beyond being the baddie that [[PuttingTheBandBackTogether brings Natsu and his friends back together]] to take him down.
* MagicStaff: He holds a staff with a eye with wings on it, which he uses to make his barriers.
* SlasherSmile: Once his mask his damaged, he sports one of these while [[spoiler:Ikusa-Tsunagi slaughters his own men]].
* TheStoic: He's mostly unfazed by his soldiers' defeat, mainly because it was AllAccordingToPlan. [[spoiler:Seeing Ikusa-Tsunagi go down with two power punches from Natsu...[[NotSoStoic not so much]]]].
* SummonMagic: He uses the same magic as Minerva that allows the summoning of ''gods'', though his is on a much higher tier as it involves human sacrifice.
* ThisCannotBe: He can do little more than stare in silent shock as [[spoiler:Natsu destroys Ikusa-Tsunagi, a seemingly indestructible war god]].
* TinTyrant: Aside from his BadassCape, he's decked out in a suit of armor that obscures his entire body from sight.
* VaderBreath: His breathing can be seen in the form of clouds that exit his mask's mouthpiece.

----
* {{Bishonen}}: He's a definitive pretty boy with golden locks and long eyelashes.
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: His Shade Sword has a dark blade that instantly breaks any sword it clashes with.
* TheComicallySerious: He actually seems to admire the tacky nicknames Briar gives him, and he does it with a straight face.
* InformedAbility: He's supposed to be a MasterSwordsman. Then he fights Erza, and she proves who the ''real'' MasterSwordsman between them is.
* MakeThemRot: His sword has this effect on whatever it cuts.
* MessyHair: He is noted for his unkempt hair, which earns him the nickname "Scruffy" from Briar.

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: [[spoiler:She's attracted to Gray, who remains cold and distant from the rest of the cult during his membership there]].
* TheComicallySerious: Her seriousness is undermined by the silly nicknames she gives her comrades.
* DarkSkinnedBlond: She is of the [[WhiteHairBlackHeart white-heared]] variety.
* DishingOutDirt: She uses magic that can send explosive shockwaves through the ground.
* EtTuBrute: [[spoiler:Briar feels betrayed and lied to when Gray reveals himself to be a ReverseMole, owing to her VillainousCrush on him]].

* TheNicknamer: Tends to give weird nicknames to her teammates: Jerome is "Scruffy" and "Eyelashes"; Mary is "Wicked Tongue"; and [[spoiler:Gray is "Ice" and, after his ReverseMole status is revealed, "Gray Sewer Rat"]].
* SelfDuplication: Her Splitting Magic creates four clones who embody [[LiteralSplitPersonality fury, laughter, sorrow, and love]].

* VillainousCrush: [[spoiler:One of Briar's alter egos, Briar in Love, says that she loves Gray "just a little". Unfortunately for her, that's just enough for [[ClingyJealousGirl Juvia]] to declare her a love rival]].

A female cultist of Avatar. She has a cat-themed motif and is head over heels for the newest member.
----
* AgonyBeam: Her Virus magic can be used in this way, though it's done through a viral infection.
* AnimalEaredHeadband: Wears a headband shaped like cat ears.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Don't her smiles fool you, she is not a Zeref cultist for the social aspect... [[spoiler:as Lucy and Natsu found out.]]
* CuteAndPsycho: Once we finally see her in action, she has the most [[DissonantSerenity bizarrely cheerful]] expression on her face, giggling while using her magic on Lucy.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: The bottom half of her dress barely manages to cover the tops of her thighs. It's especially obvious after she's left on the ground following Lucy's MegatonPunch to her gut, with it riding almost up over her waist.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Her eyes have diamond-shaped pupils.
* EtTuBrute: Just look at the despair on her face when she realizes that Arlock [[spoiler:never intended for her to survive Operation Purification]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: When she showed off her magic, she loves to target the stomach to see her opponents writhe in agony. When Lucy and she face off, Lucy takes her one out with one punch to the stomach (amplified by her Taurus dress robe). Ironically as she falls to the ground, Mary complains of feeling nauseous.
* MeaningfulName: Her name appears to be a reference to [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoid_Mary Mary Mallon]], better known as Typhoid Mary, an infamously asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever believed to have unintentionally infected fifty-one people (killing three of them), despite showing no outward signs of illness.
* PlagueMaster: Her magic infects nearby foes with viruses. She favors attacking the digestive tract, but can lethally target the brain.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: She's the most chipper of all the Avatar members.
* SlasherSmile: A rather creepy variant of this, in that it's what you get when you cross a SlasherSmile with a MoeStare.
* SoftSpokenSadist: She speaks care-freely as she tortures Lucy with her magic. Now we know how she got the nickname "Wicked Tongue" from Blair.
* SquishyWizard: She can't take punches well. Likewise, a wizard who has support magic (like Wendy) can easily counteract her viruses leaving her virtually defenseless.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Her eyes are gold, and combined with the [[ExoticEyeDesigns pupils]], is meant to reinforce the [[AnimalMotif cat theme]].
* TearsOfFear: She cries after finding out [[spoiler: Arlock intended to sacrifice her]] and again when Avatar is beaten after seeing how strong Fairy Tail is.
* TemptingFate: In her second meeting with Lucy, she once more targets Lucy's stomach, incapacitating her. All the while mocking how Fairy Tail is weak. Not a second after that statement, Wendy arrives and counters Mary's magic and, with no other means of offense, Mary's stuck blindly charging at Lucy and quickly gets dropped with [[SuperStrength one]] punch.
* VillainousCrush: Admits that she finds [[spoiler:Gray]] "dreamy."
