-> ''"Long ago, I got into a Fafner, thinking if I died, it wouldn't matter. I continued to pilot it, while searching for the reason I existed. I will choose. If there is still further use for my life, I want to live, so I can discover it."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MakotoIshii (Japanese), Creator/JohnnyYongBosch (English, series), Creator/MicahSolusod (English, ''Heaven and Earth'')

Main character of the original ''Fafner'' TV series, TheMovie ''Heaven And Earth'', and the sequel TV series ''Exodus''. He is the pilot of the Mark Elf.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: On the novel's colorpage he has brown instead of the usual black hair.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:His right arm gets assimilated in ''Exodus''.]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: He seems completely [[CluelessChickMagnet oblivious and uninterested]] in the affections the girls have for him, and it's quite apparent that Soushi is the one who is most important to him, to the point where he [[spoiler:vows to wait ''forever'' for Soushi to return to the island, and flies into a rage when Festum show up instead of Soushi]]. And even though the original series gave possible hints he returned Maya's feelings, later installments choose not to address this particular issue.
** The dramas take this further with him clearly stating that he is able to fight because Soushi is by his side. Furthermore, after Soushi is [[spoiler:kidnapped and presumably killed by Mark Nicht under Festum control]] he asks his dad to allow a suicide mission to get revenge and compares his pain to that of his father after his mother was killed. The most ambiguous part about this trope is how ambiguous it's supposed to be.
* BackToBackBadasses: With [[spoiler:Soushi]] in ''Exodus''.
* BadassLongcoat: In ''Exodus'' 2nd ending. Debuting this late in the series but [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doa_kazuki.jpg the coat]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doa_angela.jpg greatly increases]] his badassitude and boosts his maturity to epic proportions.
* BenchedHero: Due to [[spoiler:his critical assimilation process]]. Not for long though.
* BerserkButton: Attempting to harm [[spoiler:and/or kidnap]] Soushi? Bad idea.
* BigDamnHeroes: He and Soushi single-handedly salvage the situation in [[spoiler:India]] once they show up with [[spoiler:Sein and Nicht]].
* BookDumb: Thinking Dublin was in Germany probably qualifies him for this. Though as the show puts very little focus on school life, this isn't really much of a topic.
* BreakTheCutie: He goes through so much [[TraumaCongaLine crap]] throughout his childhood and the first season that once he's forced to confront his past and [[TraumaInducedAmnesia what he's done]] he breaks down. He seems to get better, but then [[spoiler:Soushi is kidnapped by the Festum, breaking him all over again.]]
%%* BrokenAce
* BrokenBird: In ''Heaven and Earth'' it's quite apparent that he's become this [[spoiler:due to Soushi's disappearance]].
* CasualDangerDialogue: When he and Soushi arrive in [[spoiler:India]] in the middle of a battle, Soushi nonchalantly asks him whether he slept well and if he had nice dreams. Kazuki responds that he thinks he did.
* CelibateHero: Speculation aside, he really has no interest in romance, and isn’t even aware of his “harem”.
* CharacterDevelopment: Quite impressive too. He went from someone who despised himself for hurting someone precious to him and who isolated himself as much as possible (''Dead Aggressor'') to someone whose greatest wish is to be with his best friend (''Heaven and Earth'') and finally developed into someone who is comfortable enough with himself to joke around with and tease his friends (''Exodus'').
* ChildProdigy: Of the athletic variety, to contrast with Soushi's TeenGenius. He's miles above anyone else in this regard and Soushi, in the novel, says that he could probably win the gold medal in every Olympic competition.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Soushi and Maya, though he spent five years (or four years, seven months and eleven days according to Kouyo) not speaking to Soushi.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Shouko, Maya, and Canon all have feelings for him, and he's completely oblivious to it. Averted in the game version though. In ''Exodus'' he seems to be aware of Canon's feelings, to a degree. In the novel he manages to connect the dots about Shouko's behaviour only ''after'' she already confessed to him.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: When Soushi tells him in the novel that he is so above everyone in the fitness department that he could easily win every Olympic gold medal his first concern is whether that includes ''synchronised swimming''.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He starts the original series piloting the Mark Elf, which is colored black. [[spoiler:Same goes for the rebuilt Mark Zwei, "Grim Reaper," in the first episode of ''The Beyond''.]]
* DeathSeeker: For a short time after [[spoiler:Soushi is presumably killed by Festum]] he is dead set on going on a suicide mission to get revenge, calling it all he has still left in GONE/ARRIVE. When it's revealed that [[spoiler:Soushi is in fact alive]] he gets over this. He's also turned into the exact opposite in ''Heaven and Earth'' due to his promise to wait forever for [[spoiler:Soushi's return,]] and in ''Exodus'', his greatest wish is to live.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Towards Shouko in the novel, thinking of her as a sweet, delicate girl who needs to be protected. Though he manages to compare her to a flower and a swan without any hint of romance, despite Shouko actually sort of confessing to him.
* DemotedToExtra: Despite being the protagonist in every previous animated entry in the franchise (barring the prequel), he becomes a supporting character in ''The Beyond''.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Even more so in ''Exodus.'' His shoulder-length hair often makes him look just as feminine as [[LongHairedPrettyBoy Soushi]].
* DramaPreservingHandicap: In ''Heaven and Earth'', [[spoiler:because his assimilation process is so far gone, there's a big chance that he'll be assimilated within minutes of piloting the Mark Sein. This along with essentially being removed for most of the last part of the movie, prevents him from piloting and easily defeating the Festum army, leaving the defense of the island to his friends.]]
** In ''Exodus'' [[spoiler:he's forced to stay behind by Soushi to conserve his strength when the Festum attack them while travelling. He's understandably upset by this, as they suffer heavy civilian casualties.]]
* HandicappedBadass: By the end of the TV series, he's [[spoiler:nearly blind. In ''Heaven and Earth'', his assimilation process has reached the point where if he pilots the Mark Sein for more than a few minutes, there's a high chance he'll be completely assimilated. As of ''Exodus'' he can see again, but the assimilation phenomenon is still wreaking havoc on his body, leaving him with only 3 years to live.]]
%%* HeartbrokenBadass: At the end of the TV series and during ''Heaven and Earth''.
%%* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Soushi.
* TheHero: He serves as the primary heroic figure in the original series, ''Heaven and Earth'', and ''Exodus''.
* ICallItVera: [[spoiler:In ''The Beyond,'' the rebuilt Mark Zwei is given the codename "Grim Reaper," whilst the Mark Zehn is called "Achilles."]]
* ICanStillFight: [[spoiler:Despite being so far along in the assimilation phenomenon in ''Exodus'' that piloting for even a few minutes would put his life at risk, he offers to fight again if it will help the younger pilots survive.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: For most of the franchise up until ''Exodus'', [[spoiler:where he willingly accepts the island Mir's blessing and surpasses the cycle of life and death]] which he calls choosing the same path as Soushi.
* ItsAllMyFault: In the novel, he blames himself for Shouko's death even months after the fact, which Soushi even tells him to quit.
* IWillFindYou: When [[spoiler:Soushi gets kidnapped by the Festum]] Kazuki has one thought in mind, and it's this.
* IWillWaitForYou: Says this to Soushi at the end of the first season, and again in ''Heaven and Earth''. A variety happens in ''Exodus'' when they promise [[spoiler:to meet again and again beyond life and death]]. Considering Kazuki is now essentially [[spoiler:immortal while Soushi is dead]] it ends up as this trope.
* KidHeroAllGrownUp: He was 14 in the original series and 16 in ''Heaven and Earth'', but he turned 20 late into ''Exodus'' and is around 25 for most of ''The Beyond''.
* LegendaryInTheSequel: [[spoiler:In ''Exodus'', Narain claims that Kazuki is considered a hero by the New U.N. Fafner pilots for his actions in the final battle of the original series. Kazuki himself seems a little put off by the admiration that Jonathan, Billy, and Ai give him when they meet him.]]
* LightIsGood: [[spoiler:Both the Mark Sein and Mark Zehn "Achilles" are white.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Not quite as pronounced as the other way round but he is this for Soushi. Various characters at various points in show, dramas and novel confront Soushi about this and even though he denies it...well, BlatantLies is too mild a description for his denial.
* MidseasonUpgrade:
** He goes from the Mark Elf to the [[spoiler:Mark Sein]] in the original series.
** In ''The Beyond'', [[spoiler:he transforms the Mark Zehn "Achilles" into the final Salvatore-model Fafner, the Mark Alles.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When he [[spoiler:scratched out Soushi's eye]] when they were kids.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:Scratching out Soushi's eye when they were kids, even though it was necessary to save his life.]] The guilt eats away at him until near the end of the first season. [[spoiler:Again, failing to save Soushi from the Festum at the end of the first season.]] It leads him to become the BrokenBird he is in ''Heaven and Earth''.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: He saves a Neo UN shuttle despite orders to leave it, but this results in Shouko's death and the NUN finally discovering the location of the island.
* NotQuiteHuman: [[spoiler:After he wakes up in ''Exodus'' he's no longer fully, if at all, human.]]
* ParentalSubstitute: It's implied he started raising [[spoiler:Soushi II for the two years lasting from the end of ''Exodus'' to start of ''The Beyond.]]
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: Refuses to believe that Soushi [[spoiler:is disappearing into the Festum hivemind]] at the end of the series, resulting in this.
* RoaringRampageOfRescue: Goes on one [[spoiler:immediately after Soushi is kidnapped by the Festum]]. It doesn't work.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: He ''plans'' to do this after [[spoiler:Soushi is taken - and presumably killed - by Festum. When Akane reveals that Soushi is actually alive]] that plan falls flat.
* SayMyName: Screams Soushi's name repeatedly when [[spoiler:he's being kidnapped by Festum, and again at the end of the series when he disappears]]. It reaches memetic level in the Eastern fandom.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: He saves some members of the Neo UN despite orders to leave them to die. Sadly, this likely contributed to Shouko's death.
* StepfordSmiler: Both in the original TV series and ''Heaven and Earth''. He gets better. Maybe.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: It isn't that strong at the beginning, but as of ''Exodus'', he looks nearly identical to his mother.
* SupremeChef: His cooking is praised various times during the series.
* TakeMyHand: With Soushi [[spoiler:when they got absorbed into the Festum world by Mark Nicht and Idun at the end of the original series]].
* TearsOfJoy: [[spoiler:At the end of ''Heaven and Earth'', he starts crying out of happiness at finally reuniting with Soushi.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: He experiences this, in spades.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: [[spoiler:Scratching out Soushi's eye]] scarred him so much that he blocked out the reason as to ''why'' he did it, leaving him only with the memory that he ''had'' done it.
* TogetherInDeath: He tries to invoke this at the end of ''Exodus'' by [[spoiler:following Soushi, who came to him to say goodbye, into death. Kouyo and Misao stop him though.]]
* UnstoppableRage: Twice so far. First when [[spoiler:Soushi is kidnapped and presumably killed by the Festum]]. He propels himself high into the atmosphere in pursuit, screaming at them to give [[spoiler:Soushi]] back. Again when Festum show up at the beginning of ''Heaven and Earth''. He furiously demands to know why it's ''them'' instead of [[spoiler:Soushi]], and utterly annihilates his opponent, [[OhCrap until it evolves]].
* WorfHadTheFlu: In ''Heaven and Earth'', he sortied to face a Sphinx-type Festum, which quickly [[spoiler:mutated into a new Aeolus-type, which is capable of mimicing and using human weapons, including Fafner weaponry. Kazuki ended up having an extremely difficult time, mainly because his assimilation process started up and he was struggling to fight back from being assimilated.]]
* YourDaysAreNumbered: In ''Exodus'', the assimilation affecting him leaves him with only three years to live.

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/finallynotoffmodelsoushi.png]]
-> ''"We are constantly living in a peaceful world that somebody else won for us. Even if it were only a day of peace, I will be grateful for its value."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KoheiKiyasu (Japanese), Creator/SteveStaley (English, series), Creator/JessieJamesGrelle (English, ''Heaven and Earth'')

The ''Fafner'' franchise's other protagonist. Kazuki's best friend and the controller of the Siegfried System.
----
* AbusiveParents: His father raised him to believe he was born only to protect the core and that he couldn't live for himself or someone else. Kozo essentially forced him to deny his own desires and needs to make him the perfect shield for the core. As a kid he even believed he didn't really exist because of this. No wonder he's got NoSocialSkills.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: It’s stated he may have feelings for Maya, however she is hung up on Kazuki.
* AlwaysWithYou: Says this to Kazuki [[spoiler:as he's being assimilated into the Festum hivemind at the end of the first season. And he is; he stays in a state of crossing with Kazuki for two years]].
* AmbiguouslyBi: His ''Exodus'' relationship chart says he might have romantic feelings for Toomi while the novel states that Kazuki is the most important person in his life. He also shows far more worry for Kazuki then for any other pilot including Maya and gets some teasing moments with both of them, though with her they are more ambiguous. It's all very confusing, mostly because Fafner - in true Fafner fashion - doesn't confirm ''anything''.
* AdaptationDyeJob: On the novel's colorpage he has bright red hair instead of the usual light brown.
* AndStarring: In ''Heaven and Earth'', understandable because he showed up the least when compared to other characters. Subverted in ''Exodus'' where he's (well, his voice actor) the top billing cast in the credit.
%%* BackToBackBadasses: With Kazuki in ''Exodus''.
* BadassLongcoat: In ''Exodus'' 2nd ending. Debuting this late in the series but [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doa_soushi.jpg the coat]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doa_angela.jpg greatly increases]] his badassitude and boosts his maturity to epic proportions.
* BerserkButton: In ''Exodus''. Never, ever, threat or hurt his friends or [[spoiler:he will send you to nothingness with his Mark Nicht]].
* BigDamnHeroes: He and Kazuki single-handedly salvage the situation in [[spoiler:India]] once they show up with [[spoiler:Sein and Nicht]].
* BlatantLies: In the novel, when Kazuki asks him who he bet on in Kazuki's matches with other boys, he says "I...I forgot". Kazuki doesn't buy it for a second but had a feeling he would says so anyway.
* BrutalHonesty: When Akira asks him how his "Akira curry" tasted he replies with "Extremely ordinary" without missing a beat.
* CasualDangerDialogue: When he and Kazuki arrive in [[spoiler:India]] in the middle of a battle, he nonchalantly asks Kazuki whether he slept well and if he had nice dreams. Kazuki responds in the affirmative.
* ChickMagnet: Probably befitting his status as Kazuki's closest friend, he is this in the novel. Kazuki notes that Soushi has a whole fanclub following him around at all times.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Kazuki though they spend five years not speaking to each other.
* TheComicallySerious: Oh so very much. He treats every task, no matter how mundane, like a war council. It's the source of many weird looks in universe.
* CrazyPrepared: Played for laughs. In the extended first episode of Exodus he for some reason carries a stop watch and clip on thermometer with him and in Exodus 2, in the middle of a war situation he for some reason has a ruler on him to cut Kazuki's hair with. Minashiro Soushi, prepared for any situation.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: The franchise's secondary protagonist.
* DistressedDude: Gets caught up in a cocoon of Festum tendrils as they slowly attempt to assimilate him, and just as you think he might get out of it [[spoiler:he gets full-on kidnapped by them]].
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Worst offender of the franchise.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: The fanclub mentioned under ChickMagnet is, according to Kazuki, made up of equal numbers of boys and girls.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Between ''Heaven and Earth'' and ''Exodus'' his hair grows out, becomes a bit messier and developes a wave. Considering the CharacterDevelopment he went through since episode one and how relaxed he is in ''Exodus'' it fits nicely with his far less cold and forcefully controlled personality.
* EyeScream: He has a scar over his left eye that's left him blind on that side. [[spoiler:Kazuki did it to him when they were children to save him from being assimilated. When he was returned at the end of ''Heaven and Earth'' his sight was restored, but the scar still remains.]]
* HeldGaze: He likes doing this with Kazuki ''a lot''.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Kazuki. [[AmbiguouslyBi If not]] [[HoYay something more]].
* HypocriticalHumor: In ''Exodus'' he and Kazuki share a scene where he mentions how long Kazuki's hair has gotten and suggests he cut it. Kazuki calls him out on it. Later, after [[spoiler:Kenji has taken control of the Siegfried System for the first time]], Soushi tells him not to shoulder everything by himself. Both Kenji and Kazuki call him out on this.
* IShallReturn: Says this to Kazuki at the end of the first season, and again in ''Heaven and Earth''. [[spoiler:He finally does.]]
* KilledOffForReal: He claims this is his fate at the start of ''Exodus''. [[spoiler:It comes true in the final episode. Maybe.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Kazuki, consistently throughout the series. ''Exodus'' Kazuki, who is much more stable than before, flees the NUN pilots to go to see Soushi, calming down significantly and immediately once they're together. Funny enough, Kazuki is this for him too.
* LivingOnBorrowedTime: It's heavily implied in ''Exodus'' that he's only alive because he's part-Festum now.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Already this in the original but even more so in ''Exodus'' where his hair is even longer and falls far less strict.
* MidseasonUpgrade: He goes from manning the Siegfried System to [[spoiler:piloting the Mark Nicht]] in ''Exodus''.
* MissionControl: Until his MidseasonUpgrade.
* NervesOfSteel: Required of him while he's operating the Siegfried System, as any show of emotion could negatively impact the pilots.
* NoSocialSkills: He has no clue of how to do casual conversation. See the episode where he takes Kazuki into his bedroom. It's turned into a sort of RunningGag where he treats a menial task as serious as a war council and Kazuki fondly says "You're really awkward, aren't you?"
* NotSoStoic: ''Right of Left'' especially shows us that Soushi's stoic demeanour is at least partly a facade. [[spoiler:In actuality, his coldness is a front used to bear the weight of his responsibilities, namely the potential of having to sacrifice the pilots for the sake of the island.]]
-->'''Soushi''': This vending machine is 11 steps from my bedroom. It's really convenient.
-->'''Kazuki''': ...You're really awkward, aren't you?
** Also played straight when [[spoiler:he pilots Mark Nicht in ''Exodus'']]. He turns out to be one of, if not the most aggressive among the [[spoiler:pilots]] on the entire show.
* NonActionGuy: Played straight in the original and ''Heaven and Earth''. [[spoiler:Subverted in ''Exodus''.]]
* NoSell: When the island Mir resonates with Emery he and Miwa are the only ones not bothered by the apparently incredibly loud and painful noise it creates.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In the novel, Kazuki describes him as a generally pleasant and gentle person (which he pegs as one reason for his massive fan club) so when he starts getting erratic and irritated Kazuki knows that something ''really bad'' is about to happen.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father dies near the very beginning of the series. [[spoiler:His mother sacrificed herself while pregnant with Tsubaki to stabilize the island's core.]]
* PosthumousNarration: His very first line in the first scene of the first episode of ''Exodus'' is ''"My name is Minashiro Soushi. By the time you hear these words, I’ll no longer be in this world."'' From there on it’s ''"You will soon learn that [insert the most dramatically vague and hope-crushingly depressing statements you can think of]"'' every single episode. It has reached memetic level by now.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: Played with. Technically he doesn't actually ''need'' to wear glasses but chooses to do so because he never restored his left eye to normal (probably because the wound Kazuki caused was too important to erase). He only does so once an attempt to dismantle Mark Nicht requires him to get into a cockpit which would not have been possible with only one eye.[[note]] ''Right of Left'' showed that piloting with only one eye caused him actual pain which got him cut from training and put him into the Siegfried System instead [[/note]] Before that however, he only wears them sporadically and with no actual indication of why he needs them.
* SandInMyEyes: Happens when Kazuki returns to the island and declares that he ''finally'' understands Soushi. Soushi is moved to tears, but when Kazuki asks him about it he brushes it off as nothing.
* SayingTooMuch: He toes the line in ''the first episode'' when Toomi asks how Tokyo was. By baffledly repeating the word "Tokyo" he manages to reveal to the ''audience'' that there's something else afoot but it's just subtle enough to not alert the other characters. ''Right of Left'' then reveals "Tokyo" was part of summer vacation spent in Alvis and Fafner training.
* SayMyName: In the PV for the second cour of ''Exodus'', he screams Kazuki's name repeatedly in a manner reminiscent to Kazuki's [[RoaringRampageOfRescue breakdown]] in the first season. He does scream Kazuki's name several times across the season.
* ScarsAreForever: [[spoiler:When he remakes his existence and come back from the Festum world, the sight in his left eye is restored but the scar there remains,]] probably because he considers it part of himself and make him who he is.
* ShootTheDog: The [[http://soukyuu.livejournal.com/43693.html second CD drama]] reveals that [[spoiler:he spread rumors about Shouko and vandalized her grave to prevent the pilots from seeing [[TakingYouWithMe suicide attacks]] as a viable option]].
* SignificantWardrobeShift: because how else do you explain ''the choker''?
* StoicSpectacles: In Exodus. Bonus points for the already long hair, double because it's already worn in a ponytail.
* TakingTheBullet: Was fully prepared to [[spoiler:get shot for Kazuki]] and does take [[spoiler:Raison's attack for Kazuki]] at two separate occasions.
%%* TheSmartGuy: In the original series.
* TheSpock: The rational one among his age group.
* TheStoic: Is generally this, but he slips into NotSoStoic when Kazuki returns to the island, and again at the end of ''Heaven and Earth''. The PV for the second cour of ''Exodus'' takes this even further, where he loses his cool completely and is heard [[SayMyName screaming Kazuki's name repeatedly]] in desperation.
* TheStrategist: There's a reason he's the operator of the Siegfried System.
* SugarAndIcePersonality
* TeenGenius: To contrast Kazuki's far more sporty nature. He was the brains behind the entire operation at the tender age of ''14''. In ''Exodus'' being on his intelligence level is equal to being the most intelligent pilot in history. In the novel he apparently plays this down as it's actually Shouko and Kouyo who always have the best grades.
* TookALevelInBadass: While he was always pretty capable and badass in his own right, being the operator of the Siegfried System, when he [[spoiler:starts piloting Nicht]] he is nigh-unstoppable.
* VocalEvolution: It's subtle, but Kiyasu Kohei voices him slightly deeper in ''Exodus'', which does actually make him appear more mature than before.
* WasOnceAMan: [[spoiler:''Exodus'' reveals that upon his return to Tatsumiya at the end of ''Heaven and Earth'', he's no longer completely human, taking on some Festum-like qualities.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: In ''Heaven and Earth'', as well as ''Exodus''. ''Wow''.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: ''Right of Left'' reveals that [[spoiler:the 13-year-old Soushi has already been working at Alvis for quite a while, knowing most of the island's secrets.]]

Main heroine of the ''Fafner'' franchise and the eventual pilot of the Mark Sieben.
----
* AcePilot: While Kazuki [[spoiler:and Soushi in ''Exodus'']] pilot superior Fafners and do the most damage, Maya seems to match, or even exceed, them in raw talent. She has excellent endurance (she can pilot a Fafner ''far'' longer than anyone else in ''Exodus'' despite her brain's advanced development) and is a naturally talented sniper, the second skill being vital in the North Pole mission at the end of the original series.
* ActionGirl: She's the best female pilot Alvis has, and one of the best pilots period.
* BadassAdorable: She's the most capable pilot behind Kazuki [[spoiler:and Soushi]], and in ''Exodus'' she's learning how to pilot a fighter jet.
* BreakTheCutie: ''Exodus'' is not kind to her. [[spoiler:By Episode 23 after she kills other fellow humans, she considers herself the same as Hester and her father, two notoriously ''awful'' people, and is even ''willing to use Fernir to force Hester pulling off Combat Regulation Alpha''. At the end of ''Exodus'' she nearly lets Billy kill her, and Mizoguchi intervening is the only thing preventing it. She states after that Billy should have shot her.]]
* BrokenBird: The end of ''Exodus'' leaves her as one of these.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Kazuki, with a dash of ChildhoodFriendRomance.
* ColdSniper: When piloting her Fafner, she becomes TheStoic.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a sister figure towards her niece Miwa, who actually calls her "Maya-oneechan" in the original Japanese version.
* TheConfidant: She fills the role to Kazuki. He finds her presence calming and comforting, and she's the only one aside from Soushi post reconcilliation he finds he can confide fully in. The novel reveals that he actually told her [[spoiler:about scratching out Soushi's eye]] because he needed to tell someone and she was the only option.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Has one toward the younger pilots after things go to hell in India.
* DudeMagnet: [[AllLoveIsUnrequited Both Soushi and Akira]] are in love with her, [[ShipTease Kazuki]] is a maybe, as well as [[EvenGirlsWantHer Rina]].
* DullSurprise: Generally her reaction when things go bad when she's piloting. Made abundantly clear when her only reaction to a Festum charging her head-on is a slight widening of her eyes and a quiet "oh."
* EmotionlessGirl: Again, she loses most of her expressiveness when at the controls of a Fafner.
* GoThroughMe: She notices Mizoguchi attempting to snipe [[spoiler:Kouyou]] after the latter starts wandering around as a mostly-assimilated zombie and steps between them.
* HopelessSuitor: She believes that Kazuki doesn't want or need her. The way she puts it he needs and wants someone else with him, namely [[HoYay Soushi]].
* HyperAwareness: Is able to perceive and deduce an alarming number of things with great accuracy just by noticing small details.
* ICallItVera: [[spoiler:''The Beyond'' gives the Mark Seiben the codename of "Azrael."]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Maya's obliviousness to Soushi's heavily implied ([[CannotSpitItOut if unspoken]]) crush and her preferential treatment of Kazuki becomes a RunningGag in ''Exodus.''
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With [[FriendlySniper Mizoguchi]], to the point where she's playfully calling him "Dad" in ''Exodus''.
* ItsAllMyFault: As the Stand By Me Drama CD reveals, she took Shouko, who wanted to go outside but wasn't supposed to because of her illness, into the mountains when they were kids. On the way Shouko's condition grew worse and because they were alone with no one to help them she grew so weak she almost died. Maya blamed herself badly for years and mothered Shouko because of it.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Towards Kazuki. Whether or not he'll ever return her feelings remains to be seen.
* IWillWaitForYou: [[spoiler:Declares a variation to Kazuki at the end of ''The Beyond'', saying she will protect the place he’ll return to.]]
* TheLancer: Once she starts piloting, she essentially becomes Kazuki's main wingman.
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:Maya attempts to blow herself up via Fenrir to take out Hester's ship when the latter attempts an ROE Alpha. Hester calls it off.]]
* ObliviousToLove: She's so fixated on Kazuki that she never gets that Soushi and Akira have a thing for her.
* PracticallyDifferentGenerations: She was 14 years-old in the original series, while her older sister Yumiko was 25.

* TheBerserker: When piloting she becomes a ScreamingWarrior that frantically attacks the enemy.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: As mentioned above the usually sweet Shouko becomes quite scary when fighting.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Says she'll protect the island for Kazuki right before she gets killed.
* HeroicSacrifice: Blew herself up to take out a Festum.
* HopelessSuitor: To Kazuki. At one point Maya even states that Shoko probably knew that Kazuki wanted someone else.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: The Festum she fights does this to her, though it's not what ends up killing her.
* MeaningfulName: Hazama, in this case, means 'to be in between', symbolizing how Shouko is positioned between characters without any real stability of her own.
* ObliviousToLove: She never figured out that Kouyou liked her.
* SacrificialLion: The first and foremost proof that AnyoneCanDie in this anime.
* SpeakIllOfTheDead: After she dies, her grave is desecrated and she's treated as an outcast for destroying her Fafner along with the Festum. The CD Dramas reveal that it was actually [[spoiler:Soushi who did this, as he wanted to discourage the other pilots from sacrificing themselves]].
* TeenGenius: In the novel. Apparently, she always scored at the very top of her year even though she barely ever attended class.

* DeclarationOfProtection: Seems to be his catch phrase after returning.
* DoggedNiceGuy: By Shouko, due her feelings for Kazuki.
%%* DysfunctionalFamily
* FailureToSaveMurder: Blames Kazuki for not being able to save Shouko despite that it was clear that there was no way that Kazuki could have caught up to Shouko's Mark Sechs since it was actively flying ''away'' from him the entire time. [[spoiler:He gets over this later on and makes a somewhat self-ironic callback to it when he reappears in ''Exodus''.]]

* LudicrousPrecision: Knows the exact amount of times Kazuki and Soushi haven't walked home together in the novel. Four years, seven months and eleven days, to be exact.

* SoullessShell: After being assimilated. [[spoiler:He does get better]].
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: To Shouko.
* TeenGenius: According to the novel Kouyo has the mind of a nobelprize winner and could have been one of the best mathematicians of his time. There he also always scored at the top if grades were split by gender, sharing that spot with Shouko.
* TheVoiceless: [[spoiler:As the Mark Vier's core in ''Heaven and Earth''. Not so much in ''Exodus'', where he manages to materialize the entire Mark Vier, with him getting to operate it in his humanoid form.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Obliterating the hand of the [[spoiler:Azazel-type Walker]] when he used to be weaker than the new pilots are today is quite impressive.

->''"It's enough that we can fight at all. The number of those who can't is far greater."''
-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MasakazuMorita

Fafner pilot for the New U.N. appearing in ''Exodus'' who also joins forces with Tatsumiya Island. He pilots 2 Fafner Power Types, based on the mass produced Gnosis Model from the original series, the first one from the battle of Hawaii being called "Olympia Angel," and the second from when they reach their destination being called "Ariel."
----
* BigBrotherWorship: It's implied he became a Fafner pilot following in his brother Dustin's footsteps. [[spoiler:Even after everything Dustin does in the series, Billy still thinks of him as a just man.]]
* BoomHeadshot: [[spoiler:He's shot in the head by Mizoguchi to prevent him from killing Maya.]]
* CasanovaWannabe: His attempts to hit on Maya and Rina don't work very well.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: The likely reason for his OpenMouthInsertFoot moment. He genuinely didn't seem to know about how badly the New U.N. had treated Tatsumiya's residents (supported by his look of confusion at Rina's rage) until Jonathan told him.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: When he asked why the Alvis Fafner pilots haven't been helping the rest of the world.
* RevengeMyopia: [[spoiler:At the end of ''Exodus'', he wants to get revenge on Maya for the death of his older brother, even though Dustin pretty much gave her no other choice but to kill him. Billy himself admits his own myopia, claiming that he doesn't know what's right or wrong anymore.]]

She pilots a Fafner Dominion Model "Gabriel" in the Battle of Hawaii, and switches to a Throne Model "Raphael", based on Michio's Megatherion Model, when they make contact with the island.
----
* DyingAsYourself: Tries to invoke this on herself. She's nearly assimilated and begs Maya to kill her before she loses herself to the Festum [[spoiler:but then Kazuki arrives and eradicates the assimilation]].
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: While all of the New U.N. Fafner pilots admire Kazuki for his exploits in the original series, she seems to be the most obvious about it.

* ADeathInTheLimelight: [[spoiler:He spends most of ''Exodus'' as a recurring background character, with maybe a couple lines every other episode. ----
* AloofOlderBrother: He is Billy's older brother.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Even after parting ways, he still has a huge soft spot for his little brother, going as far as to try to get him out of the battlefield after ROE Alpha had been declared on him.
* ColdSniper: His job includes sniping down partially-assimilated pilots, and he does so without bating an eye.
* TookALevelInCynic: He seemed much more nicer and compassionate in the past, as shown in the extended version of ''Exodus'' Episode 1.
* SnipingTheCockpit: How he deals with partially-assimilated Fafner pilots. It's clean, it's fast, and it leaves behind a perfectly usable mech.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Years of watching his comrades die in the battlefield, along with the people they were trying to save, has turned Dustin into a cold and merciless man.

----
* AxCrazy: When [[spoiler:Maya kills Dustin in self-defense,]] her already rather loose grip on sanity slips completely.
* DieLaughing: She goes out [[spoiler:laughing hysterically as she's falling out of her Fafner, getting caught up in the Fenrir explosion]].
* GenderBlenderName: Despite her masculine name, Keith is a woman, and not a particulary tomboyish one.
* MakeUpIsEvil: One of the most cynical and merciless Fafner pilots, and the only one who wears make-up. Somewhat averted series wide as she is by far not the only woman who wears make up. In fact most of the female Alvis Staff members (meaning the good gals) do it as well.
* MoralMyopia: She calls Maya a "murdering bitch" and "shinigami" after [[spoiler:Maya kills her teammate]], and this is after [[spoiler:Dustin mercilessly shot and killed Hiroto]]. Not to mention that Keith and her comrades have had no problem trying to kill ''tens of thousands of innocent civilians for half the second cour''. Hypocrite much?
* SocialDarwinist: She believes that only the smart and strong survive. Given the [[CrapsackWorld kind of world she lives in]], she is not exactly wrong.
* TookALevelInCynic: She has lost a whole lot on empathy since the Battle of Hawaii. She still retains some of her feisty mannerisms, which in context makes her seem even more cruel.

A Sphinx-type Festum given human form, and a major character in ''Heaven and Earth''.

* AnimalsHateHim: Chocolat is not fond of Misao, and angrily barks at him everytime she's given the chance.
* AntiVillain: He truly wants peace between humans and Festum, and is trying everything he can in hopes that it can happen. However, in ''Heaven and Earth'', he wouldn't dare go against the wishes of the Polaris Mir, until Kazuki finally convinced him to stand up for himself. [[spoiler:And as of ''Exodus'', he's no longer a "villain."]]
* TheAssimilator: Miwa makes a deal to be assimilated by him in exchange for his help. Though he's perfectly fine waiting until there's peace after she later adds that she won't do it just yet.

* ICallItVera: [[spoiler:''The Beyond'' gives the Mark Dreizehn the codename of "Chronos."]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Misao tries his best, but he's still a Festum with a limited understanding of human feelings and nonverbal cues, so he comes out as this at times:
** He sees nothing wrong in cheerfully asking [[spoiler:Miwa (who is about 4 years old, RapidAging notwithstanding) if he can assimilate her already, in front of her family.]]
** PlayedForDrama in ''The Beyond'', [[spoiler:where he tells Youko that he chose her as his mother due to how she knows the pain of loss after what happened to Shouko and Canon. It leads to Youko lashing out, and him becoming a DeathSeeker until the end of the following battle.]]
* TheJuggernaut: During the time he piloted the Mark Nicht, nobody could do much of anything to him. The most Kazuki could manage was to convince him to tell his Mir he didn't want to fight anymore.
* MindOverManners: Like all Festum, Misao can read human minds, but he chooses not to out of respect for humans. He also calls [[spoiler:Kouyou]] out for reading ''his'' mind, arguing that talking is more fun.
* RedIsHeroic: His fellow Aeros-type Festum from their Mir are red colored, contrasting the normally-seen gold ones. This trope doesn't come to effect until [[spoiler:he returns in ''Exodus'' when they come to protagonists' aid. Taken even further when he inherits Canon's Mark Dreizehn.]]
* SoulJar: In ''Heaven and Earth'', he was holding and protecting Soushi's existence within himself.

"Floater" is the exception since [[spoiler:its true form is Kurusu's carrier]].

* LeanAndMean: The initial Azazel seen in the story, "Walker", is a long and thin humanoid figure out to attack the protagonists.
* LightEmUp: "Vagrant" is a light based Festum.
* LuckySeven: Inverted in this case. There's seven of them and all of them are antagonistic save for "Floater".
* MakingASplash: Some of them are associated with water [[spoiler:due to originating from the Seto Island Sea Mir]].

As a result, it desires vengeance against them and will do what it can to achieve it.
* BigBad: Of ''Exodus'' and ''The Beyond''. Though by the nature of Festum, this title is debatable.
* CreepyChild: It initially takes the form of a young boy, who also appears as a Gregory-type for most of ''Exodus''. This stops during ''The Beyond'', where its appearance changes to that of an adult man.
* MadeASlave: Was bound to the U.N.'s will after they found it. This hasn't stopped its own plans or its minions from spreading destruction in its revenge scheme.
