[[folder:Celty Sturluson]]
[[caption-width-right:350:"You are not a space alien...right?"]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/MiyukiSawashiro (JP), Creator/KariWahlgren (EN)

[-''"The world isn't as cruel as you take it to be."''-]

The main character and resident [[HeadlessHorseman Dullahan]] of Ikebukuro. She used to roam the roads of Ireland, spilling blood on humans and riding down the hills with her headless horse. You know, typical stuff. One day, she awakened to find her head snatched and most of her memories gone. She managed to follow the perpetrator to Ikebukuro where she's still searching for her head to this day.

She lives with Shinra and makes a living by being a "transporter." She communicates with people by her cellphone and is seen riding a black motorcycle, wearing a helmet with kitty ears. [[CuteMonsterGirl She also has the cutest pink pajamas, loves chatting on the internet, and is afraid of space aliens.]]

Affliated/allied with the Dollars.

* AchillesHeel: [[spoiler:One of the reasons Celty is so intent on recovering her missing head is that she is certain that destroying it is the means of killing her. Naturally, it's not something you want in the hands of someone you don't know, or a {{Yandere}} stalker who's had plastic surgery so her face looks like Celty's.]]
* ActionGirl: She is a very skilled fighter who is adept at wielding scythes.
* ActionGirlfriend: Much more capable in fighting than her boyfriend Shinra, and gets involved in heavy-handed action situations more frequently than he does.
%%* {{Adorkable}}: She has her moments.
* AgentMulder: Apart from her fear of TheGreys (which she's also convinced killed the dinosaurs), she also believes in various 2012 doomsday prophecies, the photon belt, evil tesseracts [[note]]A tesseract is a four-dimensional hypercube, formed by placing two cubes in the same three dimensional coordinates and connecting corresponding vertices in the fourth dimension to form a four-dimensional polytope with eight cubic cells and 16 vertices.[[/note]], and an impending robot apocalypse.
* AmnesiacHero: Most of Celty's memories of her old life are stored in her head, and she's lost it.
* {{Badass}}: Her introduction is chasing down kidnappers and subduing them with a scythe.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadassAdorable: Given that she's more or less Death with a [[BadassBiker motorcycle]] and a kitty-cat helmet...
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
%%* BadassBiker
* BadLiar: Somehow manages this even without the ability to speak.
%%* BikerBabe
* ButterFace: In a manner of speaking. She is rather self-conscious about the whole having no head thing. Her face is actually quite attractive. It's just separated from her body.
* CarFu: Occasionally combats her enemies by ramming her motorcycle into them.
* CastingAShadow: She can control shadows, which she typically uses to form her scythe and bind her enemies.
* CoolBigSis: [[spoiler:Becomes one for Anri after the two bond over their mutual supernaturality.]] She is also one for Shizuo and later [[spoiler: Mikado]].
* CoolBike: It has no headlights, whinnies, and can jump over obstacles! Mind you, it ''is'' possessed by the spirit of an undead horse. With it, Celty is very capable of pulling off [[ImplausibleFencingPowers Implausible Bike Manuvers]] such as what's shown in episode 1, wherein she [[CarFu smacks a human trafficker in the face with her bike's front tire]], then proceeds to ''smash him up against a pillar in a parking garage with nothing but said tire.''
* CoolHelmet: It has cat ears.
* CordonBleughChef: Let's start with the fact that her head and by extension, her mouth, is missing...
* CrossPlayer: Celty prefers to keep her gender ambiguous on the internet. However, [[BadLiar she's not terribly good at it]], and both Kanra and Tanaka Taro caught on long ago (which Celty discovers, to her distress, [[InnocentCohabitation when they both react rather strongly to a comment that she has a male roommate]]).
* CuteClumsyGirl: Claimed to be a {{Dojikko}} by Shingen, and not without reason, surprisingly. She ''does'' tend to get clumsy when she's excited (which usually happens around Shinra).
* CuteMonsterGirl: She is a incredibly friendly death spirit, and is afraid of space aliens. Adorable. [[spoiler:Her missing head also turns out to be quite cute, especially considering that Dullahans are supposed to have heads with horrible, twisted grins and skin like moldy cheese.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: In Celtic mythology, Dullahans act as {{Psychopomp}}s who douse anyone who gets in their way with blood, marking them as the next one to be yanked to the afterlife by that particular Dullahan. Here, we've got one going around saving kidnap victims.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She tends to beat on Shinra or wrap him up in her shadows when she's having her [[{{Tsundere}} tsun-tsun moments]], but justified in that Shrina ''[[TooKinkyToTorture enjoys]]'' [[TooKinkyToTorture the abuse]] and tends to goad her on.
* EasyAmnesia: Due to losing her head.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: There are few things more embarrassing than being felt up by your boyfriend's stepmother. Also, Anri says she has a vague attraction to Celty, which persists even after learning about [[SamusIsAGirl Celty's true gender]].
* TheFairFolk: We've got a Dullahan.
* FamousNamedForeigner: Shares a last name with Icelandic poet and politician Creator/SnorriSturluson. A Celtic faerie running around with an Icelandic last name might seem weird [[FridgeBrilliance until you consider Izaya's hypothesis]] that [[spoiler:Dullahans have a connection with the Nordic Valkyries]]. This leads to more questions, as [[spoiler:Sturluson means [[WasOnceAMan "Son of Sturla".]] Assuming she was born in Iceland during those times, and that she was female, her last name would be Sturludóttir ("Daughter of Sturla").]]
* FreakinessShame: Celty is understandably ashamed of her lack of a head, but Shinra thinks it's rather sexy.
* FreakyIsCool: Ends up fangirling Shizuo during his fight against Saika's 'children', much like how Shinra did when he and Shizuo were in highschool.
-->'''Celty''': He's so strong... No, he's terrifying... No, he's ''awesome!''
* {{Hammerspace}}: Apparently one of her abilities; she's pulled a cell phone, a shopping list, a kitchen knife, and a scythe from some kind of smoky darkness she can access.
* HeadlessHorseman: A more modernized version... that rides a CoolBike!
* HealingFactor: Any wounds and injuries she sustain would heal themselves almost instantly.
* HelloNurse: Celty's head and face are so beautiful that it inspires fanatical devotion in at least two men and beguiled awe in the heart of an artist. [[IncrediblyLamePun This is on top of]] [[CuteMonsterGirl the attention her body gets]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:Celty all but snaps when she finally confronts her "head" (grafted onto the body of Mika Harima) during the Dollars meetup and confirms her greatest fear -- that she's never gonna get it back. She only calms down after both the reveal that it isn't actually her head and a big argument with Shinra over where her real head is.]]
%%* TheHeroine
%%* HouseFey
* HumanoidAbomination: Essentially, although she's a benevolent one.
%%* IAmWhatIAm
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: Celty's shadow constructs can take on a variety of forms and uses, including a scythe, a helmet, and gloves. Supposedly, her black suit is made out of these shadows too.
* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: Celty's scythe.
* InnocentCohabitation: With Shinra. [[spoiler:At first.]]
* InterspeciesFriendship: With pretty much any human she's friends with.
** IntergenerationalFriendship: With Mikado and Anri.
* InterspeciesRomance: With Shinra.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: Despite being a living legend, Celty still fangirls over Shizuo's SuperStrength. Not to mention, both she and Shinra are huge fans of celebrities Yuhei Hanejima and Ruri Hijiribe.
* {{Leitmotif}}: She's got a subtle one in the anime, which seems to be built around the tune of "Danny Boy". Its name is [[ Green Memories]].
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Shinra, who repeatedly states he couldn't stand a life without Celty and will do ''anything'' to keep her by his side.
* LosingYourHead: It wasn't connected to begin with, but she still wants to hold it; however it has gone missing.
* MagicalGirlfriend: Shinra considers her this for him.
* MarriedToTheJob: Celty spends so much time working that she and Shinra rarely share real quality time together. She even turns him down when he asks her to go out in a date on her rare holidays.
* TheMasochismTango: Has bit of this with Shinra. {{Lampshaded}} when Walker concludes that they're both in a mild "Type M" relationship; though it's not abusive. Both of them enjoy messing with each other.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Celty is presumably hundreds of years old and hasn't aged a day ever since she first met her 24-year-old boyfriend Shinra 2 decades ago.
* MementoMacguffin: Celty's PDA was a White Day gift from Shinra. She [[BerserkButton reacts rather strongly]] to having it knocked out of her hands.
** It also has practical significance, as her PDA allows her to communicate with others and to store information. [[note]]It's what a PDA is designed for - "Personal Data Assistant." The notepad function does see more use than anything else, but it isn't the only part that's ever used.[[/note]] [[FridgeBrilliance In other words, the PDA is in some ways a symbolic replacement for her missing head.]]
* MonsterRoommate: To Shinra.
* MsFanservice: Living proof that you don't need a head to be sexy.
* MundaneUtility: Turns out that [[CastingAShadow control over darkness and shadow]] is surprisingly versatile -- though Shinra put his foot down at letting her use it for cooking.
* MyHorseIsAMotorbike: Her motorcycle is an undead horse that just ''looks'' like a motorcycle. [[FluffyTheTerrible Its name is Shooter.]] She rode a horse in the old days but in modern Japan it merges with a motorcycle to fit in better. Shooter can shift back and forth between horse and motorcycle as it pleases (chariot optional).
* MySuitIsAlsoSuper: Her clothes are made using her ability to manipulate shadows.
* OnlySaneWoman: Yes, the only ''normal'' person in the major recurring cast is the amnesiac headless psychopomp. Let that sink in for a second. ''The DarkIsNotEvil mythological HumanoidAbomination'' is the sanest, most moral and most ''human'' member of the cast.
* OpenSecret: Both Tanaka Taro and Kanra caught on to her [[CrossPlayer not-so-ambiguously-gendered chatroom persona]] pretty early on.
* PlatonicLifePartners: She's best friends with Shizuo, whom she admires very much and would go to when she needs sort out issues regarding her missing head.
* QuestForIdentity: Her primary motivation. [[spoiler:This eventually starts to change when she begins coming to terms with the fact that she's built up enough of an identity over the last twenty years that she doesn't really need her old memories anymore.]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Celty isn't quite sure how old she is, thanks to the amnesia, but the few fuzzy memories she does retain go back over a hundred years.
%%* RedHeadedHeroine: She's Celtic.
* SamusIsAGirl: People tend not to immediately recognize that Celty is female. Shinra thinks they're blind.
--> '''Shinra:''' ...Eh, Tom-san, What's with that face? Celty? Yeah, that's her name. She's the Black Rider..."So it's a she?" Shizuo, you didn't tell him that part?...Ehhh? You didn't know Celty was a woman either until recently!? But Shizuo, I can't believe it!
* SecurityCling: She runs to hug Shinra after her first scary encounter with the motor cops.
* ShyFingerTwiddling: When Shingen asks her if she's in love with Shinra.
%%* SignificantGreenEyedRedhead
* SilentSnarker: Generally snarky, especially when dealing with Shinra.
* SinisterScythe: She wields a black scythe made of shadows. While Celty is far from evil, this weapon makes her absolutely terrifying to those who are against her.
%%* SlapSlapKiss: With Shinra.
* SoreLoser: She doesn't take it well when she loses in videogames.
* TheSpeechless: Justified since she doesn't have a head; she can still "talk" by typing out words on a cellphone. From the fourth episode on, she is voiced as a matter of convenience; she's still not actually speaking and is simply typing out whatever she's "saying".
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Certy/Celty/Selty/Selti/Serti/Ceruti/Ceruty... this ''still'' happens after folks have seen the second OP, given that ''every major character's name is displayed '''in English''' text on-screen.'' It doesn't help that one of the earlier episodes shows a private chatroom with her name spelt as "Selty" despite the fact that Crunchyroll subs it as "Celty."
* SpyCatsuit: Her jumpsuit presents the same effect.
* StrappedToAnOperatingTable: Celty agrees to be vivisected by Shinra's father, Shingen, in return for a place to stay. Turns out human anaesthetics don't work on Dullahans.
* SwissArmySuperpower: She comes up with a lot of creative uses for her shadow-stuff.
* TalkingWithSigns: Via her PDA. This serves as her primary means of communication. When this isn't possible, she relies on a HandSignals.
* {{Telepathy}}: She can communicate this way, but without her head she doesn't know how to do it consciously.
* ThroughHisStomach: She decides to cook something for Shinra to thank him for letting her live with him. It doesn't go as expected when Shinra says he likes her food, but Celty is convinced that she screwed it up and forces him to stop eating.
* {{Tsundere}}: Walker gets into a big argument with Erika over whether Celty is a "true" Tsundere. Celty is not amused. Walker feels that Celty is too even-tempered, and that Shinra mostly deserves the ass-kickings he gets. She would count as a Type B Tsundere, for those curious.
* {{Valkyries}}: Izaya has a theory that the legend of Dullahans and the legend of Norse Valkyries are based on the same thing; and one can somehow "trigger" Valkyrie Mode and [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Ragnarok]].
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Uses it to store a wad of money from Izaya in episode 4.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She's started to fall into this after volume 8 of the novel. Shinra [[spoiler:getting attacked]] just happened to have her become very protective of him. Also, in episode 14 she threats Izaya for insulting Shinra.
* WhatTheHellHero: Celty gets ''pissed'' when she discovers that Shinra [[spoiler:knew exactly where her head was, but deliberately withheld the information]]. Even after he explains his actions to her and they get something of a resolution to the argument, [[MyFistForgivesYou Celty punches him]] [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom into a wall]] before she lets herself forgive him.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Her fear of aliens and motorcycle cops.
* WomanInBlack: Subverted. She goes around in a black jumpsuit, but she's really quite a sweetheart.
* {{Workaholic}}: Shizuo implies her to be this in episode 3.

[[folder:Mikado Ryugamine]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/ToshiyukiToyonaga (JP), Creator/DarrelGuilbeau (EN)

[-''"But at that moment... I felt my body tremble as I sensed that a new world was opening up to me."''-]

A [[NiceGuy nice]] [[NaiveNewcomer newcomer]] to Ikebukuro, where he attends Raira Academy with his best friend Masaomi and his crush Anri. Mikado decided to come to Ikebukuro on his own to seek something new from his boring life in the country. Initially, he isn't [[NonActionGuy a very courageous fellow]], but as the story progresses, he learns to become [[AwakeningTheSleepingGiant more determined and strong]].

* {{Adorkable}}: He's very shy, awkward and easily flustered.
* AffectionateNickname: Erika gives him the cutesy nickname "Mika-pon".
* AmbitionIsEvil: Judging from his point of view about humans, what he apparently wants from all of this is [[TheDarkSide power]].
* AwakeningTheSleepingGiant: Aoba experiences firsthand the [[TranquilFury fury]] that Mikado can unleash when he threatened the existence of Dollars and Anri.
-->[[spoiler: '''Aoba''': Orihara Izaya, have you realized this? You and I, we've probably both underestimated Mikado-sempai. Even with what you and I already know about him... it could turn out that sempai... [[LetsGetDangerous had far from shown us his true character.]]]]
* AwesomeMcCoolname: Basically reads "Emperor of The Dragon Peak" in English. Lampshaded by Walker, who asks if it's a pen name and remarks that it sounds like it was pulled from some manga.
** For comparison, his screenname, Taro Tanaka, is roughly the equivalent of "John Smith" in Japanese.
* {{Badass}}: Hell yes. The "[[spoiler:Pen-Stabbing]] Incident" has become nothing short of legendary.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadassAdorable: He looks damn cute when screwing with Namie and making the Dollars gang up on her.
%%* BeneathTheMask
* BewareTheNiceOnes Namie [[LampshadeHanging acknowledges]] this in episode 11:
---> '''Namie''': You're a much quieter kid than I imagined. Or maybe kids like you are much more dangerous nowadays.
* BreakTheCutie: He went through loads and loads of confusion and painful struggles, starting from novel vol. 5 to novel vol. 6. [[spoiler:The result of it, as shown in vol.8, is... [[CorruptTheCutie not nice at all]], [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope to say the least.]]]]
* CannotSpitItOut: And when Mikado works up the courage to do so in Episode 12, [[CrowningMomentOfFunny he finds Kida flirting with Anri and roundkicks him]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Starts off as a [[NaiveNewcomer meek, shy, and awkward kid]] who [[IJustWantToBeBadass just wants to be awesome]] until it's revealed that he's [[spoiler:actually a very capable guy, as well as the leader of the Dollars]]. Afterwards, he becomes more and more sure of himself, and he slowly but gradually becomes [[spoiler:a [[AmbitionIsEvil power hungry]] {{Yandere}} with [[LackOfEmpathy little empathy]] for people who have hurt him or his friends]]. Aoba outright states that he hasn't even ''shown his "true colors" yet''.
* TheChessmaster: Considering that he sometimes puts himself in his plan, he may even come across as a MagnificentBastard, though he himself likes to think he's a GuileHero. [[spoiler:Basically, by the later books, he starts to act scarily similar to Izaya in his operations... with TranquilFury replacing manic laughter, and Lawful replacing Chaotic in alignment (i.e. he manipulates people for a direct purpose only, not screws with them ForTheEvulz)]].
* ChildhoodFriends: With Kida.
* ClassRepresentative: He's assigned to be the representative of his class along with Anri.
* ConvenientlySeated: Mikado gets a window seat that's in the second-to-last row.
* CuteAndPsycho: Despite his NiceGuy appearance on the outside, Mikado is pretty ''fucked up''.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's an [[NiceGuy all around nice guy]] and even a bit shy ... just don't [[DudeWheresMyRespect push him too far]] or [[BerserkButton threaten Anri's safety]].
* DecoyProtagonist: Despite the story opening with his arrival to Ikebukuro, and the subsequent hijinks he got involved into as he tried to fit in, Mikado is ''not'' the primary protagonist. Celty is.
* DissonantSerenity: When Kida finally reunites with him in volume 8, he's smiling peacefully... [[spoiler:[[ while splattered in blood]] and while setting a guy on fire, no less.]]
* DoggedNiceGuy: A Downplayed one to Anri.
* TheDulcineaEffect: He is compelled to save Anri from the delinquents harassing her.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: It's relatively easy to miss if you don't already know what happens, but the manga puts a lot of emphasis on his suspicious smiles throughout the series.
%%* FreakyIsCool
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: In episode 22, he disbands Dollars by means of denying access to the site and seems to have become a recluse after seeing the escalating gang violence from the Yellow Scarves in response his scheme to rescue Anri.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Masaomi. They have been best friends ever since they can remember and both will do anything to protect each other.
* HiddenDepths: Seems like an ordinary NiceGuy until you piss him off.
* HopelessSuitor: He has a crush on Anri, the girl who claims to be incapable of love. Although judging by the way Saika is starting to react when Anri is around Mikado[[note]]remembering that Saika is basically Anri's emotional barometer, considering she doesn't have enough experience with love or the emotional stability to recognise the difference between her feelings for different people[[/note]] , that may be changing. [[spoiler:Subverted by the time of ''Durarara!! SH'', where he and Anri are now dating.]]
* IJustWantToBeBadass [[spoiler: Played with. As the novels progress, it becomes clear that he was a {{Badass}} all along.]]
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: More like I Just Want My Life to Be Interesting. And considering that the last [[TheChessmaster Chessmaster]][=/=]ManipulativeBastard who decided he wanted his life to be "interesting" was Izaya, that's really not a good thing[[note]]Izaya pretty much gives him a gentle push in the right direction[[/note]]. [[BewareTheNiceOnes The later novels are starting to show that]].
* ImagineSpot: Mikado's 'inner puppet theatre' -- the results are quite hilarious.
* InnocentBlueEyes: [[spoiler:A subverted bait-and-switch. They are actually IcyBlueEyes.]]
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Celty, and to a lesser extent, with Shinra.
* TheLeader: Of the Dollars. He's a type I: Mastermind. Few dollars have any idea he's the one sending orders to their cell phones.
* MeaningfulName: Mikado Ryugamine roughly means "Emperor of the Dragon's Peak."
* MissionControl: For the Dollars.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: MOUSE CLICKS OF FIRE!
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: See below. It gets worse in the novels.
* NameThatUnfoldsLikeLotusBlossom: His name means Emperor of the Dragon's Peak. This is a bit of a DubInducedPlotHole, since its not translated into English, so English viewers are left confused as to why everyone keeps commenting on his name.
* NaiveNewcomer [[spoiler: Subverted as he's very much aware of what's going on.]]
* NeighbourhoodFriendlyGangsters: Even with being a major gang ringleader, Mikado is still very much a terribly nice guy who puts others before himself. The Dollars as a whole are also composed of generally decent guys.
* NiceGuy: He appears to be a kind and helpful guy. [[spoiler: Subverted later on where he's revealed to be a very cold person.]]
* NightmareFetishist: Though not quite in the same way as Shinra.
* NonActionGuy: [[spoiler: Subverted later on in the novel.]]
* ThePenIsMightier: Mikado used the ballpoint pen to stab Aoba in the hand.
%%* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain
* ShrinkingViolet: He shows himself as meek and insecure. [[spoiler: Subverted later on. This is apparently a front that he shows to humanity.]]
* ShutUpHannibal: [[spoiler:Performed in Episode 11 to Namie, when he reveals he has power in numbers.]]
* SupportingProtagonist: He acts as the main viewpoint character especially early in the series, but it's stated by WordOfGod that Celty is the real main character.
* ThreeAmigos: Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri quickly establish this dynamic.
* TranquilFury: Since he isn't a kind of person who likes to express their emotions much, his anger always results in this. Yes, even [[spoiler: that scene with Namie]]. The anime altered it a bit in order to make him look like an awfully nice person. In the novel, [[ however...]]
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: With Kida and Anri.
* WalkingSpoiler: Mostly revolving around the fact that he's the leader of the Dollars.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:Later in the series, he allies himself with Aoba and his Blue Squares and decides to take extreme measures to take a better control of the Dollars and make Ikebukuro a more safe place for Masaomi and Anri.]]
* WhamLine: He's the master of them in the series.
** From episode 11. "I have neither the power nor wisdom to oppose a foe who won't listen to reason. You won't even give me time to try. [[spoiler: And so... I'll rely on numbers!]]"
** From the episode before that. "[[spoiler:I have all the pawns I need...]]"
** And from volume six of the novel. "[[spoiler:But it's not like Dollars had any rules to begin with, and making any rules now would just make Dollars not Dollars anymore. ......In a world without rules......the only thing you can rely on to have your dreams realized is power.]]"
* WhoNamesTheirKidDude: His own impression of his AwesomeMcCoolname.
* {{Yandere}}: Towards Masaomi and Anri. To sum it up, [[spoiler:threaten to involve Anri in any danger will result in you getting stabbed with a pen (Aoba learned that first[[{{Pun}} hand]]). [[folder:Masaomi Kida]]

[-''"I also... swore to myself I wouldn't go over to that side again."''-]

Mikado's best friend and the one who suggested for Mikado to come to Ikebukuro. Masaomi is an extremely hyper fellow who loves [[GratuitousEnglish sprinkling English]] in his sentences and [[CasanovaWannabe hitting on older girls]]. He claims there is a love triangle between Mikado, Anri, and himself, and he's not above flirting with Anri, much to Mikado's chagrin.

* AuthorityEqualsAssKicking: The leader of the Yellow Scarves gang, and is the strongest of them all.
* {{Badass}}: Hell. Yes. There's a reason he became the leader of the Yellow Scarves, after all.
* {{Bishounen}}
%%* BreakTheCutie: One name. Izaya. [[StepfordSmiler The results weren't pretty.]] See the main page for details.
* BromanticFoil: To Mikado. [[spoiler:Subverted in the novel where Kida is pretending to be Mikado's foil.]]
* CannotTellAJoke: Not that it stops him from trying.
* CasanovaWannabe: He often flirt with girls, and many of his interactions with Mikado involve him inviting the latter to "pick up chicks" together.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Mikado.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Despite behaving like a silly guy who thinks of nothing but girls, Kida is one of the stronger fighters in the series.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: He has blond hair and yellow eyes, although his hair is dyed.
%%* DeathSeeker: Thankfully, he snaps out of this just in time. Anime only, since in the novels he never contemplates it.
* DelinquentHair: He dyed his hair blonde at some point in middle school. Mikado almost didn't recognize him because of this.
* DistressBall: A mild example and {{justified|Trope}}. [[spoiler: He was going through a {{Heroic BSOD}} when he found out that Mikado was the leader of Dollars and when he decided to kill Horada, [[DeathSeeker he was ready to die.]] However, he didn't think about being outnumbered 1 to 100+ members of Yellow Scarves despite the fact that he is a OneManArmy and then there was the fact that Horoda had a gun that he didn't know about.]]
* FatalFlaw: Kida is very bad with handling shame and guilt. [[spoiler:Part of the reason he drops out of school and disappears from Mikado's life is because he can't bear to face him after the whole fiasco with the Yellow Scarves]]. Izaya is fully aware of this and sometimes rubs salt in the wound by deliberately making plans that Kida could easily foil if he could only own up to his past failings and [[CanNotSpitItOut spit it out]].
%%* AFatherToHisMen:
* FlashbackToCatchphrase: Although he doesn't say it often enough for it to be a catchphrase, at one point he says "What's your answer? Three-two-one time's up! I win, you lose!" About twenty episodes later, we see that he learned it from [[spoiler:Izumi, the leader of the Blue Squares, when he was ''torturing Saki''. The question was "What bone did we just break?"]]
%%* GratuitousEnglish
* HandsOffParenting: His parents have an extremely laissez-faire parenting style and don't mind that their son has involved himself with a gang of delinquents or dropped out of high school. Mikado seems very aware of how his parents are, since even as a child, he was wondering how lenient they could be to let Masaomi wander around outside by himself at two a.m. in the night.
%%* HesGotLegs: Definitely. Just look at his character single album pictures and you'll agree.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Mikado.
* HiddenDepths: Comes off as an idiot at first, but the truth is a lot deeper.
%%* {{Keet}}
* LargeHam: Sometimes becomes this when explaining the ways of Ikebukuro to Mikado.
* LikesOlderWomen: Masaomi isn't picky when it comes to age. [[ The Gaiden short story that came with the third DVD]] shows that he's perfectly happy to flirt with ''grandmothers''.
* MyGreatestFailure: Masaomi deeply regrets his forming the Yellow Scarves, especially after his girlfriend Saki was severely injured in a MobWar crossfire.
* MeaningfulName: His name Righteous Vassal works a pair with Mikado's name.
* MinoredInAssKicking: Masaomi usually does his ObfuscatingStupidity to glaze situations, with a hint of MagnificentBastard. However... beware the Jimmy Bar.
* NonuniformUniform: Wears a hoodie under his school jacket, rather than the required dress shirt and tie.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: In regards to Mikado and sometimes Anri.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Apart from formerly leading the Yellow Scarves, he can also deal some serious amounts of damage with a Jimmy Bar. How good is he? He singlehandedly took out several rival gangs during his time in the Yellow Scarves.
* OfficialCouple: With Saki.
%%* OneManArmy
* RealMenWearPink: In the special 12.5 episode, he's wearing a pink shirt instead of his usual uniform.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Sort of. While the spelling of his name is more or less unequivocal, it's mostly that fans mess up the organization and think that his ''first name'' is Kida - probably because it's shorter than Masaomi and sounds more like a first name. His first name is definitely Masaomi, though.
* StepfordSmiler: Masaomi is not naturally that chipper -- it's a front he puts up for Mikado's sake.
* ThreeAmigos: He, Mikado, and Anri quickly establish this dynamic.
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler: When he confronts Horada, he does it while acting like his cheerful self, even when talking about intending to kill him. This is in part because Kida sees the moment as a way to make-up for his failure to save Saki, and because he's something of a DeathSeeker at the time. That situation as well as the speech he made about the was anime-only, in the novels Kida had not known about Horada trying to take over the Yellow Scarves until he returned to the hideout.]]
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: With Mikado and Anri.
* WalkingTheEarth: Leaves Ikebukuro due to the trouble with the Yellow Scarves, taking Saki with him.

[-''"Because it's so much easier to live while depending on someone. And I thought that was the only way for me to live."''-]

A [[ShrinkingViolet shy girl]] who goes to Raira Academy with Mikado and Masaomi and eventually befriends them. She is looking for her friend [[{{Foil}} Mika Harima]], who disappeared shortly before the first day of school. In spite of her gradual friendship with Mikado and Masaomi, Anri is [[BrokenBird very reluctant]] to let anyone get close to her.

* AbusiveParents: Her father, though it's later suggested someone was drugging him into insanity.
%%* ApologizesALot
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Delivers one to [[spoiler:Masaomi, of all people]].
* {{Asexual}}: A twisted example. She herself suggests she's merely incapable of discerning her own feelings towards others, and a very strong point is made that she's the way she is due to psychological trauma and subsequent dissociation. Later she appears to be developing romantic feelings towards Mikado. Complicating matters somewhat is the fact that should she grow capable of love, she will become vulnerable to possession by Saika.
* BadassAdorable: While the second part is obvious, she later reveals herself to be incredibly competent as the wielder of an EvilWeapon capable of using DemonicPossession to force most anyone into instant and total obedience. Despite being immune to the latter ability, Celty suggests that Anri would beat her in a fight. Reinforcing the notion, Volume 5 has her fending off a garden scissors-wielding Vorona with her sword skills, not relying on Saika's… "less savory" abilities.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: A genuinely nice person, but her powers are based around DemonicPossession. She later starts using them to better Ikebukuro anyways, at Celty's suggestion.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Rather innocent and kind, but similar to Mikado in this respect; because both are quiet and shy (on the surface), people who mean them harm don't think they're a threat. Unpleasant things tend to happen to these people; with Anri, you're less likely to be screaming in agony, though that's probably because of the DemonicPossession.
* BloodSplatteredInnocents: On more than one occasion; [[spoiler:both in her backstory, courtesy of her AbusiveParents, and in the present, when she witnesses one of the Slasher's attacks.]]
* BrainwashingForTheGreaterGood: On occasion, Anri will invoke her status as the HiveQueen to Saika's children to do good around Ikebukuro, such as forcing members of the Yellow Scarves to stop the attacks on the Dollars. Additionally…
* BrokenBird: [[spoiler: Her father's abuse and the witnessing of her mother murdering her father and killing herself]] left her without the ability to love.
%%* BrownEyes
%%* BoobsOfSteel
* BuxomIsBetter: It's no secret that Anri's many, many admirers are attracted by her bust size. It backfires on her on occasion, since "the girl in a Raira uniform with glasses and a nice rack" was enough of a description [[spoiler:for Horada to start a manhunt for the Dollar's "hypnotist"]].
%%* TheChick
* ClassRepresentative: Took the position because it's the position Mika wanted.
* CordonBleughChef: She gets a worse score on her cooking than ''Celty'', who lacks a sense of taste. The only one who got worse than her was Emilia, who seemed to think she was supposed to make a bomb (she got a -20).
* CursedWithAwesome: Saika acts as this for Anri, since the sword lets her control people en masse, bestows amazing fighting prowess and SuperReflexes, and is incapable of possessing her with its HiveMind because of her inability to feel love. As the sword's host, Saika also has to protect her from any potential threats to physically harm her.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Very much a {{Badass}}, in spite of everything else, and hers is ridiculously micro-level.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Her mother killed her abusive father, and then killed herself, right in front of her]]; on top of that, immediately afterwards, she was possessed by Saika.
* DarkIsNotEvil: The powers granted to her by Saika certainly give her a ghostly, supernatural appearance, what with the red eyes and shadowed figure, but on the whole she's a shy, gentle person who just wants what's best for others.
* DCupDistress: She feels embarrassed about her breast size.
* DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel: At first, she gets in trouble with everything from perverted teachers to street thugs. Then she's later revealed to be a WillfullyWeak HiveQueen.
* DidIJustSayThatOutLoud: A digital variant. She never quite gets the hang of the private chat function in online messaging.
%%* DudeMagnet: See UnwantedHarem below.
* EnemyWithin: Her relationship with Saika sometimes borders on this given her complicated issues about love.
* EvilerThanThou: An incredibly strange example, since she's a heroic character but the fact remains that she defeats Haruna by basically out-[[GirlWithPsychoWeapon Girl-With]]-[[EvilWeapon Evil-Weapon-ing]] her, and her IAmAMonster attitude and usage of DemonicPossession certainly gives off this vibe.
* ExtremeDoormat: To the extent that she considers herself a parasite feeding off the friendships she fosters with others, and to Saika as well.
* {{Foil}}: To Mika. Their entire friendship is based off this contrast.
* FriendlessBackground: Prior to befriending Mika, who was only using Anri to make herself look better. She forms genuine friendships with Mikado and Masaomi, though, despite the plot constantly getting in the way. Later novels have her starting to bond with Erika, as well.
* GagBoobs: There's a running gag of various characters referring to and identifying Anri primarily by the size of her breasts.
* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: A weirdly literal example, since her sword is an EvilWeapon and insane in its own right. One could say she's a [[IncrediblyLamePun Girl With Saika Weapon]].
* HarmfulToMinors: Watching [[spoiler:your mother kill your father (who's busy trying to kill ''you'') and subsequently slit her own throat [[DissonantSerenity with a smile on her face]]]] was demonstrably bad for her psychological health. What's even more disturbing is that it doesn't seem to affect her much at all at the time, though she was probably mostly desensitized to it by then, owing to the constant beatings from her father.
%%* TheHeart
* HeelFaceBrainwashing: One of the powers she has using Saika is essentially this- cutting people to make them loyal, and then commanding them to do good. She tries it on Izaya in episode 24, but he manages to evade her.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Considers herself to be a parasite because she depends so much on others.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Mika, though Anri admits that both of them were just using each other as {{foil}}s. That is, until Mika went missing and got together with Seiji.
* HiddenWeapons: A bit more extreme than most examples, Saika is literally hidden ''inside of her body'', and she can bring it out at will. The sword can [[PocketProtector protect her body]] this way, too.
* HiveQueen: An incredibly rare benevolent example. Also has elements of a VampireMonarch, given the [[TheVirus infectious nature of possession]] and the hub and spoke nature of her "children", who can't communicate telepathically if they're on the same "level".
* IAmAMonster: Being the host of a demonic sword and a HiveQueen, she developed this attitude.
* IJustWantToBeNormal:
-->'''Anri:''' Nothing ever happens. Nothing ever changes. This was her daily life.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Celty, Akabayashi, and to a lesser extent, Shinra.
* KidWithTheLeash: Saika would "love" a lot more people if she weren't keeping it under control.
* KirkSummation:
** [[spoiler: Her response to Haruna's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech is to agree with everything that she says, claim that it's actually what makes her ''strong'', then reveal that Haruna's Saika is a mere child of hers, the true Saika, with which she quickly and effortlessly defeats her]].
** She tries to give one to Izaya, and while it's the first time Izaya gets pissed, it still barely phases him.
* LetsGetDangerous: Any and every time she reveals Saika.
* LoveIsAWeakness: Her inability to feel love is actually a ''good'' thing. Mainly because ''she'' possesses ''Saika'' rather than the other way around like most wielders happen to be. Although Saika was trying to take control of Anri by putting FakeMemories of her parents loving her so she can feel love, Anri wasn't fooled by those memories because she damn well knows that her father was ''very'' abusive and was never given the feeling of love from her parents. Not to mention that she is fully aware of the [[DemonicPossession possessive power of the sword]]. Unfortunately, Saika becomes more and more noisy, especially when she's around Mikado, or when someone mentions him. Anri ''still'' doesn't fully understand the situation, but it's becoming more clear that there ''is'' a possibility of Saika overcoming her.
%%* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Justified and not her fault.
%%* {{Meganekko}}
* MoralityPet:
** To Mizuki Akabayashi. Anything involving her instantly becomes a personal concern for him, rather than work-related. [[spoiler:This is because he was in love with her mother and his former boss was behind the drug-induced insanity of Anri's father, which eventually led to her mother's MurderSuicide.]]
** Also to Mika. While Mika is a crazy stalker that only befriended Anri to have a {{foil}}, Mika has shown to truly care about Anri to some extent.
* NiceGirl: In spite of [[DysfunctionJunction her MANY emotional problems]], Anri is a generally kindhearted and well-meaning person.
* PlotPoweredStamina: She has terrific agility and stamina, and is quite capable of outrunning people when she needs to. Lampshaded by Shinra in a phone call to Celty:
-->'''Shinra:''' Anri-chan ran out of the apartment after she saw some message on her cell phone......I'm running after her right now......I think she's heading for the abandoned factory. I don't think I can stop her......breathe, I need to breathe.....she's fast! So fast! Anri-chan is so ridiculously fast!
* ThePowerOfLove: Inverted. Saika's love for humanity [[LoveMakesYouCrazy is what makes it so dangerous]] while Anri's ''inability'' to feel love is what keeps Saika from taking control of her.
%%* TheQuietOne
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When using her powers as Saika, combined with GlowingEyesOfDoom.
%%* ShrinkingViolet
* SkinshipGrope: A victim of one halfway through season 2 at the hands of Erika. She's ticklish.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Her episodes tend to be narrated by other people, and even when she narrates, it's in third person. This serves to foreshadow her deep dissociation issues.
* ThreeAmigos: Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri quickly establish this dynamic.
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri.
* UnwantedHarem: Is uncomfortable with the attention she receives, whether it is from Mikado, Masaomi, or that lecherous teacher Nasujima-sensei. It's suggested that the only reason it isn't bigger is that [[EveryoneCanSeeIt almost everyone just assumes she and Mikado are dating]] — Aoba's made mention of a waiting list.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Has a difficulty with understanding this concept, and therefore she cannot tell apart the feelings she feels for Mikado, Masaomi, ''and'' Mika.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She has a passive, soft-spoken and gentle personality, although she won't let others push her around all the time. To seal the deal, she wears yukata on occasion.

[-''"Izaya Orihara, the informant, isn't ''that'' bad of a guy. But I'm also not kind enough to stop someone who wants to die."''-]

Ikebukuro's mysterious KnowledgeBroker and greatest {{Troll}}. Claims to love all humanity ([[MyFriendsAndZoidberg except Shizuo]]) -- love which he expresses by [[ItAmusedMe manipulating people]] at every opportunity. He loves playing mind games and seems to be one step ahead of everybody else at times.

Officially a WildCard to all sides of the various factions in universe.

* AnimeAccentAbsence: Neatly averted. While he speaks grammatically and idiomatically perfect Russian, it's ''painfully'' obvious that Creator/HiroshiKamiya hasn't the least idea in the world how it should sound. His accent is so atrocious that his words don't even register as Russian.
* ArchEnemy: To Shizuo. He hates Shizuo because his unpredictability and TooDumbToFool status makes him a massive thorn in his side and a possible SpannerInTheWorks for his plans.
* AwesomeMcCoolName: While Orihara's a pretty common name, his first name isn't. His parents named him as such because they wanted to name him after the [[MeaningfulName Biblical prophet, Isaiah.]]
-->'''Izaya:''' My parents are completely ordinary people. [[WhoNamesTheirKidDude Except for when it comes to the taste in children's names, that is.]]
* BadassBookworm: A very dangerous information broker.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadassInDistress: In the PSP game, [[spoiler:Izaya gets captured and loses his memories.]]
* BadassNormal: A normal human in terms of physical capabilities, but he is one of the few people who can pick a fight with Shizuo and live to see another day (or at least avoid getting hospitalized). He is also implied to have SuperReflexes [[spoiler:judging from his battle with Anri, despite her skillful use of Iaidō to mess with his depth perception.]]
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadBoss: He has Saki and [[spoiler: Masaomi]] working for him. Needless to say, he doesn't treat them very well. Inverted in the case of [[spoiler: Namie]] as he is almost a BenevolentBoss: he pays her a very high salary, keeps her from possible dangers and [[VolleyingInsults engages in]] [[SnarkToSnarkCombat symbiotic snarking]] with her.
* BatmanGambit: Pulls citywide strings by knowing his pawns well enough to predict their actions and responses. Many, many of them at once. He also invokes this trope, since he deliberately makes his plans easy to defeat if the key players would just face their flaws. They don't, his plans go through, and he laughs his ass off.
* BenevolentBoss: It's also worth noting that [[spoiler:Namie]] is the only person he's employed (and one of the very few in the novels) that he has yet to [[BreakThemByTalking screw with]]. He's also revealed some "secrets" to her, and he outright states that he wants to keep his leading lady close, so he seems to avoid doing anything that will seriously upset her in the future. Then again, knowing Izaya, there might be an ulterior motive.
* BigBad: The closest thing the series has to the main villain. He's manipulated almost every single character in the series for his own twisted amusement, which arguably makes him ''the'' definite BigBad.However as of season 2 he lost this position to Kasane Kujiragi .
* BigBrotherBully: Izaya's quick to admit that Mairu and Kururi's... [[CreepyTwins more]] [[CuteAndPsycho unusual]] [[{{Twincest}} quirks]] probably came about from growing up with ''him'' as an older brother.
* {{Bishounen}}
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He can appear to be a genuinely nice guy, until you realize he's just [[{{Troll}} fucking with you]] [[ItAmusedMe for kicks]].
** Even Celty knows there's something not quite right about him in Episode 4:
--->'''Izaya:''' Kudos to you as the deliverer, again. I can get by because you're here, and vice versa.
--->'''Celty:''' I don't want to agree with the vice versa.
--->'''Izaya:''' Come on, don't say that. I'll be counting on you again from now on. I want to get along with you. Forever...
--->'''Celty:''' Is it my imagination that I feel a certain ''eeriness'' from you?
--->'''Izaya:''' Whoa! It's ''definitely'' your imagination.
** And again, in Episode 12:
--->'''Celty:''' And my daily life came back, too. [''sees Izaya''] Running into people I'd rather not see, like always...
* BreakThemByTalking: This is how he screws with people. His EstablishingCharacterMoment is in the second episode where he goads a girl into committing suicide. [[spoiler: Celty saved her and later asked him why. He just said it was for fun.]] He does it to [[spoiler:Masaomi]] in the third arc. Also to [[spoiler: Anri, in episode 24, as part of stopping her from making him one of Saika's "children"]]. Then two suicidal girls in the novel/manga, and to [[spoiler:Earthworm and Nakura]].
* BrokenAce: Intelligent, handsome, agile and also madder than a hatter.
* {{Calvinball}}: Izaya plays chess-shogi-reversi-go-cards-alcohol-[[IncendiaryExponent matches]] against himself when he's bored. When Namie asks him how to play it he changes the subject.
* CessationOfExistence: This frightens him. [[spoiler:This is why he's setting up Ragnarok. Even if he goes to Hel's realm instead of Valhalla for being a non-warrior, it's still existence.]]
* TheChessmaster: Izaya is thoroughly amused that you think you're playing chess with him.
* ConsummateLiar: If [[InformationBroker you didn't pay for it]], there's a good chance that whatever Izaya tells you is something he just made up. The same probably goes some of the information you ''did'' pay for, for that matter. Even he acknowledges this truth.
-->'''Izaya:''' It's kinda scary how much people trust me.
* DeadpanSnarker: Shows shades of being one in middle school, especially towards Shinra. Occasionally lapses back into this around Shinra and sometimes, Namie.
* DiabolicalMastermind: Manipulates people and supernatural beings just because he can.
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler:The reason for becoming an information broker seems to have started with his past in middle school when a student named Nakura stabbed Shinra who took the knife wound for him. As revenge for the incident, Izaya swears to make Nakura's life miserable for the rest of his life.]]
%%* DissonantSerenity
* TheDreaded: Though not to the same extent as Shizuo Heiwajima, whom the entire damn city is terrified of. The people who fear Izaya are the ones who deal with him regularly, such as gangs. As a KnowledgeBroker of the highest caliber, all of the gangs in Ikebukuro are perfectly aware that Izaya can screw them over in the worst way possible with nothing more than a phone call, if that. Putting a hit on him or attacking him won't work either, as Izaya is well-regarded as one of the strongest men in Ikebukuro (despite technically residing in Shinjuku) -- good enough to mess with the aforementioned Shizuo Heiwajima on a regular basis ''for kicks''.
* EtTuBrute: Subverted. [[spoiler:Izaya plans to betray Shinra who is his [[MoralityPet ONLY friend.]] All he has to do is bring Celty's head and be next to Celty without showing it and then see if anything will happen. However, knowing that his goal to cause Ragnarok might destroy Shinra's happiness, he has second thoughts and laughs at himself before slamming his fist into a telephone. No one sees his expression and his sisters come around when he's able to put his mask back up but just knowing he has second thoughts and the hint of guilt though...]]
* EvilGloating: He hired [[spoiler:Namie]] to serve as his secretary for two reasons: [[PokeThePoodle to rub her defeat in her face]] (he makes her use a ''punch clock'', for crying out loud), and so that he has someone to listen to his genius plans.
* EvilIsPetty: Izaya first shows how far he'll go to troll people by kidnapping a suicidal girl to "prove" that, since she was scared, she's not really suicidally depressed and is just being a whiny EmoTeen (and then he invites her to prove him wrong by showing her a ledge to jump off of and dangling her from it). His second act of vile depravity? Breaking someone's cellphone.
%%* EvilLaugh
* EvilPlan: Believe it or not there ''is'' more to his trolling than ForTheEvulz (mostly). [[spoiler: He wants to use Celty's head to cause Ragnarok so he can be taken away by a Valkyrie and avoid the CessationOfExistence.]]
* EvilerThanThou: A milder version, when Earthworm has captured him and is gloating over her victory as she tortures him, thanks to another mysterious information broker who she claims is better than he is. [[spoiler: Turns out he planned the capture to observe her methods and get more information on her group all along...and the other guy was just yet another one of his pseudonyms.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: He didn't get the name "[[FanNickname Trollzaya]]" for nothing.
* [[invoked]] FoeYay: Shizuo x Izaya -- the more they seem to hate each other, the more popular it becomes.
** Shizuo and Izaya hate each other with an obsession so deep and constant... that it mirrors the obsession of any one of the multiple stalkers of the series who profess to be in love. Yes, the comparison does not hold up well.
** He also has moments like this with [[spoiler:the girls he almost convinces to commit suicide. After one of them breaks into his hospital room and tries to kill him, he hugs her tightly while thanking her and telling her how much he loves her]]. Of course, it's plain creepy in context.
** We can also add [[spoiler:Earthworm]] to the list.
* [[ForScience For (Social) Science]]: Izaya is what happens when a MadScientist discovers that his true calling isn't chemistry or biology, but social psychology.
* ForTheEvulz:
** Downplayed in the anime only, where Simon implies that [[spoiler:this is purely an excuse and Izaya is jealous of Shizuo's influential status.]]
** It's more or less PlayedStraight in the light novels for the most part, however, [[TheChessmaster he does have a bigger plan]] for a lot of the [[{{Jerkass}} asshattery]] he pulls.

* {{GIRL}}: [[spoiler:Disguises himself as such on chatrooms as "Kanra", before he uses a different handle as "Chrome" and drops the {{GIRL}} act.]]
* AGodAmI: Shows shades of this occasionally. It's especially noticeable when he sets his chess board ''[[KillItWithFire on fire]]''.
--> '''Izaya:''' When I look at it like this, I can't help but feel that I'm just a little bit God-like. And you know what? It feels ''good''! * TheHeavy: Almost every problem the characters face can be linked directly back to him.
* HumiliationConga: [[spoiler: Vol. 13 as a whole for Izaya is this. First, his plans completely fall apart and everything he's worked towards is for naught. Second, Shizuo manages to finally defeat him completely in combat, leaving him at Shizuo's mercy. When he tries to least take solace in his belief that killing him will prove Shizuo is a monster, Shizuo ultimately is stopped from killing him, so he losses that too. * LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: While it's never [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]], his relationship with Namie fits this trope quite well. He even calls her his HouseWife.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Being a extremely manipulative asshole tends not to win over a lot of friends. [[spoiler:Which is why his only friend is Shinra.]] it's worth noting that, unlike most examples, he doesn't just sit around and {{angst}} about it. He knows that this is the life he's chosen for himself, and if he ever even mentions his loneliness it's simply a passing comment. -->'''Namie:''' Would you please refrain from using me to comfort your ego just because everybody in the chatroom but you has friends to eat hotpot with?
* LonersAreFreaks: Played with. In middle school, everyone avoided him because he gave the impression to everyone that he was this type of person. However, the way Izaya puts it, he does seem lonely and grateful that Shinra would talk to him. Of course, he would deny it saying that he only talked to him to "observe" him.
* LoveIsAWeakness: He clearly states in volume 9 that he doesn't want to get attached to ''anyone'' whether it's friendship or romantic. -->'''Izaya:''' I've been telling people I was 21 for ''ages'' - or were you under the impression that I would just feed them my real personal information for free?
** Subverted with volume nine, which is an ''entire volume'' on Izaya's past.
* TheNicknamer: Izaya's known for these (he's responsible for both [[TermsOfEndangerment Shizu-chan]] and Dotachin) -- the recipients tend not to like them.
** The former, at least, is subverted. It seems he heard the nickname 'Shizu-chan' before meeting Shizuo or even knowing what his real name was (he even thought he was a ''girl'')
* NonchalantDodge: When he's not running from Shizuo, this is usually how he fights him. Also happens in the first OP when Shizuo chucks a mailbox at him and Izaya dodges in time, causing the water pipe behind him to burst open when the mailbox hits it instead and slam Shizuo into the vending machine behind him from the emerging blast of water.
* NoodleIncident: Apparently, the feud between Izaya and Shizuo stems from Izaya falsely accusing Shizuo of some sort of crime.
** Also in middle school. His apparent [[spoiler: stabbing Shinra]] incident. If Shinra brings this up, he freezes instantly. [[spoiler: However, you find out that the reason he freezes is that he doesn't want people to know that Shinra protected him and is trying to make it up to him by getting back at the person who stabbed him.]]
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Particularly to Mikado. And suicidal girls, of course.
* OnlyFriend: His only friend is Shinra.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:No matter what he says, he generally ''does'' care about Shinra. It's evident that the event that Shinra mentioned in middle school weighs on him because just mentioning it shuts him up. There's also the fact that [[ShipperOnDeck he encouraged Shinra to buy valentine's chocolate for Celty.]] Of course, the chocolate was sold out so whether or not he was generally caring for Shinra at the moment or if he knew that the chocolate was already gone is up to interpretation.]]
** And to add to the top [[spoiler:he does feel bad about Shinra taking a knife wound for him. It was to the point where he [[SilentScapegoat would rather have everyone think]] [[KicktheDog that he stabbed Shinra]] rather than have people think that Shinra would take a knife wound for someone like him. And then he promises Shinra that the man who stabbed him, Nakura will suffer for the rest of his life.]]
* PoisonousFriend: Towards [[spoiler:Shinra. If you even think of hurting him, be prepared to face the consequences. Of course, Ruri's stalker is no exception and ened with two of his legs broken, even though [[{{Manchild}} Izaya was still sore]] about Shinra being uncaring for him to be stabbed not too long ago.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: One of the rare ManipulativeBastard versions. It becomes quite obvious as the series progresses that he sees everyone and everything around him as little more than toys to be played with [[HeroicBSOD until]] [[DrivenToSuicide they]] [[KillItWithFire break]].
-->'''Izaya:''' 'Humans are mine! And I really don't like to share.'
%%* PsychoPsychologist
* PsychoticSmirk: It speaks volumes about Izaya that he only gets truly frightening when he ''isn't'' wearing his trademark rape face.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: In many fan drawings and in the novel, he has red eyes.
* RedOniBlueOni: He's blue to Shizuo's red because he is the calm and smooth speaking manipular while Shizuo is basically rage on legs. The irony in this being Izaya is actually ''more'' aggressive than Shizuo is. Most of Shizuo's fights with Izaya are because Izaya provoked him in some way -- Shizuo would actually be very content if he stayed out of his life completely.
* RenaissanceMan: Understands and speaks three languages (Japanese, English, and Russian). He studies Norse and Celtic mythology. He knows parkour and is a good enough street fighter to mess around with Shizuo "God of Destruction in a Bartender Suit" Heiwajima on a regular basis. He dicks around with social psychology, mostly to carry out completely unethical social experiments (will exposing suicidal girls to near death experiments make them more or less likely to kill themselves? Let's find out!). He's set himself up as a very successful InformationBroker before even turning twenty three. Not bad for someone who never went to a single class when he was in college.
* ShipperOnDeck: Zigzags around this trope. He seems to support Shinra/Celty but around Celty, he tends to mock Shinra to no end to the point where [[spoiler: she wraps a shadow around his neck and tells him to stop mocking Shinra.]] However, it becomes obvious that he does support the two together [[spoiler: on Shinra's side at least. He encourages Shinra during a valentine's chapter to go by chocolate because it's the thought that counts. And this is after Shinra goes to Shizuo to complain about Valentine's Day and he shooed him away. His support might have to do with said middle school incident.]]
* SilentScapegoat: [[spoiler:For Shinra. Despite Shinra taking a knife wound for him, he would rather have people think that he stabbed him instead of Shinra defending someone like him.]]
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: And smart, ''crazy'' people play [[{{Calvinball}} Chess-Shogi-Reversi-Go-Cards]] [[IncendiaryExponent that's on fire]].
%%* SmugSmiler
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: Most of his conversations with [[SassySecretary Namie]] tend to lapse into this.
* TheSociopath: Fits the trope description (as well as the DSM, for the most part) to a T. [[spoiler: Though it becomes {{Subverted}} when we delve into his backstory a little. See LackOfEmpathy above.]]
** Also, it should be noted that Izaya's never said he was [[spoiler: ''unable'' to love]], just that he [[spoiler: has no interest in forming personal relationships]].
%%* TallDarkAndHandsome
%%* TallDarkAndSnarky
* TechnicallyASmile: Izaya's constant grin is frequently described as 'mask-like,' or 'a smile that doesn't reach his eyes.' As written in the ninth novel:
--> It was not even a smile of pleasure - but rather a smile that could be called either eerie or bland, a smile that made the observer think that it only served to conceal his emotions.
* TermsOfEndangerment: He calls Shizuo "Shizu-chan". Shizuo absolutely hates it, but Izaya loves to push his {{Berserk Button}}s anyway.
* ThoseTwoBadGuys: With Namie. Particularly evident in the Akane arc.
** [[spoiler: Subverted in the 9 novel. It turns out that Izaya didn't deal with Akane personally and just made Nakura pretend to be him.]]
* {{Troll}}: Both in real life and on the internet (where he earns extra points by [[spoiler:pulling the {{GIRL}} routine]] on a regular basis). Izaya screws with people simply because he enjoys it and likes seeing their reactions.
%%* TsurimeEyes
* WarForFunAndProfit: Mostly fun.
* WickedCultured: Has a snazzy apartment, is well-read, and speaks fluent Russian [[note]]Not very well, but that's probably more to do with the seiyuu than the character. However, his Russian is near perfect in the English dub.[[/note]]
* WildCard: He's probably helped out ''and'' back stabbed every significant character in the series just ForTheLulz... except for Shizuo. With Shizuo, it's clear that all his actions regarding him are driven by pure hatred.
* {{Wimpification}}: Almost ''always'' when paired with Shizuo in fanon...and even by Narita himself in an April fools story (though they did, um... "switch" roles). Though he tends to avoid this when paired with anybody else. This is helped by the anime's portrayal of him, which gives him some random "feminine" qualities.
* WouldHurtAChild: Izaya isn't above [[spoiler: manipulating elementary school girls and endangering their lives in the process.]]
* WouldntHitAGirl: Played straight, but ("I don't like hitting girls... Which is why I instead make it a hobby to [[MemeticMutation stomp on their cellphones!]]")
** However, he is not above [[spoiler: letting others do the beating for him.]]
* {{Yandere}}: For [[spoiler:Shinra]] but not in the romantic sense. [[spoiler:He will make sure that the person that hurt Shinra will suffer for the rest of his life. How serious is he? Well, for one thing, ever since that incident, he's been stalking said stabber and setting him up for two huge crimes against criminal organizations that he worked for and then telling him over the phone that these people will come for him. It's to be noted that when something bad happens, Izaya ''never'' tells said person that it was his doing but this incident proves that he indeed holds a '''''huge''''' grudge.]]

The young BackAlleyDoctor of Ikebukuro who lives with Celty. Shinra is... odd. He has a huge love for supernatural events and loves to run his mouth, especially when Celty is involved. He went to high school with Izaya and Shizuo and knows the two very well.

By proxy of Celty, he is affiliated with the Dollars.

* AboveGoodAndEvil: As Izaya describes it, Shinra's in his own little world as long as it concerns Celty and hurting her will make him come back down to earth. [[spoiler: Naturally, Izaya is jealous on how Shinra can create his own world.]]
* {{Adorkable}}: Whenever Celty is in the immediate area.
* AgentScully: To contrast with Celty's [[AgentMulder Mulder]].
* ArbitrarySkepticism: That being said, it's difficult for his arguments to be taken seriously when his roommate/girlfriend is a headless psychopomp.
%%* BackAlleyDoctor
* {{Bishonen}}: A nerdy one.
* BrainsAndBondage: Shinra thinks that Celty's powers would be great for BDSM.
* BrutallyHonest: While perfectly willing to lie to preserve his relationship with Celty, he is extremely frank about everything else. It's one of the reasons Shizuo tolerates his company despite finding him really annoying.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Shinra ''is'' a pretty good surgeon (especially considering [[ImprobableAge his age]]), but he's also pretty weird. For example, he's probably the only BackAlleyDoctor to talk your ear off about White Day while extracting a bullet from your arm.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Not as evident in the current timeline but during middle school student, Izaya thinks he's one. [[spoiler: Naturally, this puts him above humanity in Izaya's book.]]
* DevotedToYou: Shinra has been obsessing over Celty nearly his entire life and has admitted he will do ''anything'' to make her stay with him.
* DoggedNiceGuy: Twenty years, he's been trying to get with Celty. ''Twenty years''.
* DressedToHeal: Shinra almost never takes off the labcoat.
* FreakyIsCool: Shinra makes it known that he thinks Celty is beautiful without a head. Yeah, he's kinda weird.
** He also spent most of gradeschool and highschool fanboying Shizuo's crazy rage fits. Shingen did not raise that boy right.
* FriendlessBackground: Both because most people generally regard him as a freak and because he's largely uninterested in forming friendships with normal people. This has not seemed to have changed in adulthood.
-->'''Shiki:''' I called your friend. The one who isn't Shizuo.
-->'''Shinra:''' You make it sound as if I have no friends besides those two
-->'''Shiki:''' Do you?
-->'''Shinra:''' No.
* FriendToAllChildren: Shinra turns out to be inexplicably good with small children, [[MistakenForPedophile much to everyone's horror.]]
%%* HandsomeLech
* HarmfulToMinors: Much of Shinra's weirdness can be attributed to Shingen's less than stellar parenting techniques. These included such wonderful ideas as bringing Shinra into the operating room and encouraging him to vivisect a struggling, naked, headless woman at the age of four.
* HornyScientist: And, unlike most examples, Celty has to [[InnocentCohabitation live with him]]. At least he's pretty.
%%* HospitalHottie
* HouseHusband: He and Celty might not be married (yet). But he already is one.
* HyperAwareness: He catches onto things very easily. [[spoiler: A major example during middle school is when he tried to talk to Izaya for the first time. The main reason he asked him to join the two person Biology club only is because Izaya loved humans and he was right on the mark to Izaya's surprise.]]
%%* IJustWantToBeSpecial
* ImprobableAge: Shinra started practicing medicine straight out of high school. It's justified in that he's [[BackAlleyDoctor not practicing legally]].
** And he started operating (well, ''vivisecting'') at ''four''. Shingen is called MadDoctor for a reason.
* InnocentCohabitation: With Celty. Although it wouldn't be so innocent if he had his wish. [[spoiler:Which he does.]]
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: Played with. While everyone around him considered Shinra a freak, he didn't bother making friends with people who were considered "normal". As a result, he only befriends Shizuo and Izaya and [[spoiler:goes as far as taking a knife wound for Izaya]].
* InterspeciesRomance: With Celty.
* IronButtMonkey: Thanks to his tendency to annoy Celty and Shizuo on a regular basis, Shinra usually finds himself at the end of a SuperStrength-backed punch quite often. These do nothing to stop him from getting back up and annoying them again.
* JapanesePronouns: Shinra's pronoun use is weird in that he'll switch between ''watashi'', ''boku'', and ''ore'' completely at random, for no other reason than because he likes to. Celty thinks it's annoying.
** His explanation of this is as follows:
--->Eh? You want me to "stop switching back and forth between 'boku', 'watashi' and 'ore', pick just one and stick with it"? But I don't want to, Celty. A leopard doesn't want its spots changed. Even if you ask me to change the personality I'm born with, I can't. First-person pronouns are meant to be varied with different conversation partners anyway. The world is filled with all kinds of people. That's why you need to use different pronouns in front of different people......but to me, Celty equals the entire human race, or the entire world. That's right. I have to show every single facet of me in front of you, be it my preferred facade in front of other people or my real self! ......Hmm, where were we?
* {{Jerkass}}: In the novels since anime made him much nicer. Shinra isn't nearly half as bad as Izaya but he still has his moments. For example, he openly complains about Shizuo visiting him to treat his injuries or bringing wounded people. Not to mention his treatment of Izaya [[spoiler: after the latter got stabbed]]. And mind you, he considers those two to be his friends.
* JustTheWayYouAre: Shinra's opinion on the whole deal with Celty's missing head. [[spoiler:However, there's the added complication that he's worried that, with her head and memories, she won't be the same Celty he knows and loves -- if she doesn't disappear altogether, that is.]]
* {{Keet}}: A milder version, but mostly in his childhood.
* KidWithTheLeash: If not for Celty and his father, he is with [[spoiler: Izaya]] of all people.
** Not that he ever actually ''attempts'' to control any of them - inhibiting the actions of the last one would be a ''real help!''
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: Never, ever takes it off. Even other characters notice.
* LimitedWardrobe: Shizuo finally asks him what the deal with wearing labcoats 24-7 is in Volume 5. Apparently he likes to be the ManInWhite to Celty's WomanInBlack.
* LonersAreFreaks: In middle school, a lot of people kept their distance from him and labeled him as one.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He fell in love with Celty the moment he saw her.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: He's willing to do so many things in middle school. He even [[spoiler: took a knife wound for Izaya because he thinks that it was heroic and that Celty would notice him more.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Has explicitly stated that there is absolutely no line he wouldn't be willing to cross for Celty's sake.
-->''I feel like we hear the phrase "love and justice" a lot, but no one seems to ever mention "love and evil". An evil guys whose love is deeper than the ocean. If the object of affection is narrowed down to Celty, then I am one.''
** The difference between him and [[StalkerWithACrush some of the other]] [[MadLove characters in the series]] is that he is fully aware of the morality of any situation (i.e. he would never try to justify himself or blind himself to the truth of what he was doing), and he might even feel bad about it... but that wouldn't stop him if Celty or his relationship with her were on the line (and he is absolutely serious when he says he'll sacrifice himself in that cause as well).
* MadeOfIron: Naturally he qualifies if he's able to survive getting punched across the room by Celty and Shizuo. [[spoiler: This might have saved him from getting brutally attacked by Ruri's stalker.]]
* MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: A son variant. Although he didn't escape being raised by [[MadDoctor Shingen]] without a loose screw or two
-->'''Celty:''' I expected Shinra would never grow up to be a decent human being raised by such a parent...And I was ''right''.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: [[spoiler:When Shinra was stabbed in middle school by a student named Nakura, he's rather calm about it as he tells Izaya to stop the bleeding instead of panicking.]]
* ManInWhite: Deliberately invokes it with his ever-present labcoat.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Feminine Boy to Celty's Masculine Girl.
* TheMasochismTango: With Celty, to a degree.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Since Dullahans are immortal, Celty will likely outlive him.
%%* TheMedic
%%* {{Megane}}
* MistakenForPedophile: Subverted. With Shinra being the very vocal pervert he is, most people tend to assume the worst when it turns out that he's very good with children. Shinra is offended - not because his friends are implying he's a pedophile, but [[ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne because they're implying that he's attracted to anything other than]] [[SingleTargetSexuality headless eldritch psychopomps named Celty]].
* MoralityPet: He generally falls into the roll for many character particularly Celty, his father [[spoiler:and Izaya]]. Special mention for the last one. [[spoiler: Izaya will go to huge lengths to make sure that person (Nakura) who stabbed him would regret it for the rest of his life]].
* MrExposition: Shinra's usually the one to throw in [[{{Handwave}} a hypothesis or two]] for things like, "How does Celty see and hear without a head?" and, "Just how ''is'' Shizuo that stupidly strong, anyways?" Naturally, he's also the only one who ever seems to ''care'' about this sort of thing, as demonstrated by Shizuo (attempt at) relaying Shinra's explanation for his HollywoodHealing.
-->'''Shizuo:''' I've destroyed my body countless times, but I just kept getting stronger. Shinra says it's because...You know what, ''who gives a crap?''
* MrFanservice: The only male in the cast that was featured in both ShowerScene and ShirtlessScene.
* NightmareFetishist: Perhaps a little more literally than others
-->'''Celty:''' They called me a monster.
-->'''Shinra:''' How rude! I would have used the term "Naughty Lady" myself...
* NonActionGuy: [[spoiler: Naturally, this comes to bite him in the ass. See ShootTheMedicFirst.]]
* OneHeadTaller: Than Celty. A bit more literally than other examples.
* OnlyFriend: To Izaya.
* PrecociousCrush: Shinra says that he's been attracted to Celty since the day that he met her. That would be when he was four.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Izaya's red in middle school.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: At times. Shown prominently in the second OP, and [[spoiler:in the flashback when he's about to operate on Mika Harima.]]
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: He has declared himself Celty's fiance most of his life.
-->'''Shinra:''' Shizuo, Celty here is my roommate. Or should I say future wi-AAIIGH!
* ShootTheMedicFirst: [[spoiler:Ruri's stalker decides to kill him after failing to kill Celty. Luckily, Celty saves him but not before getting critically injured...]]
* ShowerOfAwkward: Tries to invoke this to see Celty in the shower and instead ends up seeing ''his father'' naked.
* SingleTargetSexuality: A very vocal Celty-sexual. Celty, for her part, is worried that he might be Dullahan-sexual.
* SlapSlapKiss: With Celty, but he actually enjoys it.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:In middle school, it turns out that he took a knife wound for Izaya instead of the assumption that Izaya stabbed him.]]
* TooKinkyToTorture: [[IfItsYouItsOkay If it's done by Celty, it's hot]]. He also doesn't consider regular asskickings a barrier to his [[VitriolicBestBuds friendship with Shizuo]].
* TooMuchInformation: Usually what gets him in trouble with Celty or Shizuo. Note, it takes supernatural strength to get him to ''shut up'' and even that's temporary. You can knock him unconscious mid-sentence; and he'll continue the conversation upon waking up.
-->'''Shinra:''' But it's not like you to act so faint-hearted! I only really like it when you're frail in be--[WHACK!]
** And from the last episode: "I'm going to have to take a shower and change the sheets!" [[{{JizzedInMyPants}} Really, Shinra?]]
*** To be fair though, the Japanese see it as generally "[[GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex proper]]" to shower and wash your sheets before having sex. Coming from Shinra though, it's hilarious either way.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He and Shizuo are friends for most of their lives, but being a resident {{motormouth}} of the series, he tends to prance on Shizuo's ''many'' {{Berserk Button}}s as a jolly pony. Which never really bothers either of them.
* WifeHusbandry: Shinra's really hoping a gender-reversed example with Celty. He met her when he was four, and though she didn't exactly raised him, they lived together as he grew up. And it looks like he finally got his wish... er, [[SlapSlapKiss sort of]].

[-''"I hate violence... I'm not lying."''-]

The most fearsome man in Ikebukuro and rage in human form. Shizuo has a hair trigger temper and a tendency to react to anything that sets him off with uncontrollable violence, which is only made worse by the fact that he also has SuperStrength. Expect to see flying vending machines. WordOfGod states that Shizuo is ''the'' strongest character in the entire ''Durarara!!'' series.

When he's ''not'' raging uncontrollably he's... actually, he's a pretty normal - if quiet and socially inexperienced - young man who [[IJustWantToBeNormal only wishes to be able to keep control of himself]] so he can stop hurting everyone around him. Except for Izaya. He ''will'' hurt Izaya if he can.

Affiliated with the Dollars.

* {{Adorkable}}: When not in rage mode he's a friendly and insecure guy. Too bad it doesn't happen too often.
* AlwaysWantedToSayThat: Not the slightest bit threatened by Seiji's YouShallNotPass behavior, nevertheless decided to roll with it. "Leave him to me and go on ahead! Heh heh."
* AntiHero: Hey, he was going to be an IdealHero if it wasn't for his HairTriggerTemper traits, his status as TheDreaded and tendency to deliver [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown No-Holds Barred Beatdowns]] to his opponents.
* ArchEnemy: To Izaya. It was HateAtFirstSight, but the intervening years filled with numerous [[NoodleIncident Noodle Incidents]] is what really sealed the deal.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Shizuo fires off a few about Seiji's love life when he [[CasualDangerDialogue stabs him with pens.]]
* AxCrazy: You do not want to piss off Shizuo. Simon even describes him as being violence incarnate during a narration.
* {{Badass}}: The biggest one in the series. The anime episode which features him is even titled "Badass dude"
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadassBaritone: Particularly in the dub where he's voiced by Creator/{{Crispin Freeman}}.
* BadassInANiceSuit: His Bartender suit is badass because it's associated with him.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadassNormal: ''Technically'' Shizuo doesn't have any superpowers and Celty's admitted that he could easily beat her in a fight.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BadassUnintentional: He ''doesn't'' enjoy fighting, so what makes him so badass? Piss him off, and ''then'' you'll find out.
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave BadassNormal at first level, please.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: How did Tom get on Shizuo's good side? By showing him some basic human decency.
* BerserkButton: Shizuo has about a million of them, but Izaya's continued existence rises above them all. Others include people making excuses, people being nosy in regards to his brother, and delusions of "true love" (it's not that Shizuo is so cynical, it's that it was one guy thinking an escort girl loved him and Seiji seriously believing his PuppyLove was going to stay afloat).
* TheBerserker: Infamous for his wildly destructive rampages.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When not provoked, Shizuo is actually a nice guy, if a little shy and socially awkward. Unfortunately, he's also [[TheDreaded Shizuo]] [[HairTriggerTemper Heiwajima]], which tends to overshadow that facet of his personality.
* BeyondTheImpossible: First of all he's super strong in a show that (some elements aside) is pretty realistic. More impossible, he's broken so many bones it's amazing he can even walk. His buddy Shinra, a doctor, stopped trying to figure out how he does it.
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** For his genuine little brother; don't ask questions about him and ''definitely'' don't insult him.
** Develops this for Akane in the novels.
** He also gets very protective Celty in the anime; wanting to beat the crap out of the Slasher on her behalf.
* BiggusDickus: [[WordOfGod Narita's]] Bacon Lettuce April Fool strongly implies this.
* BizarreHumanBiology: First, he possesses [[SuperStrength monstrous strength]] but that is loosely explained by him not having unconscious limiters. Even Shinra can't explain how Shizuo got his RequiredSecondaryPowers such as HealingFactor and SuperToughness.
* BlessedWithSuck: Turns out that SuperStrength isn't all that fun to grow up with, especially when you don't start off with the relative invulnerability that's assumed to go with it.
* {{Bishounen}}: The scout who ended up scouting his little brother Kasuka originally wanted to scout Shizuo. Shizuo himself seems to be completely unaware of it, mainly due to his lack of self-esteem.
* BridalCarry: In the PSP game, he carries [[spoiler: Izaya]] this way.
* BrokenAce: On the surface, he's a legendary badass who could kick the ass of everyone in Ikebukuro if he wanted to. In truth, he hates his reputation for badassery, is disturbed by his predilection for ultraviolence, is depressed by the problems that haunt him because of the first two items aforementioned, and his fondest wish for his life is IJustWantToBeNormal.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: "Badass Dude" just wants to have friends and stay out of trouble.
* BullyingADragon:
** People at Shizuo's high school were not smart but then again they ''were'' manipulated into doing so by Izaya.
** A sadly common scene is for him to be accosted by random punks in the street, shortly followed by them [[OhCrap emptying their bowels]] when they realize (too late) who he is.
* CameBackStrong: Though he doesn't have to die for it to activate, this is basically his power.
-->'''Shizuo:''' I came back stronger every time. [[DoingInTheScientist Shinra know what? Screw what he says]]! [[{{HandWave}} I CAME BACK STRONGER EVERY TIME]]!
* CharacterTics: Shizuo usually snaps a small, thin object (like a pencil or cigarette) in half, drops it on the ground, and crushes it underfoot when he's about to go into an UnstoppableRage.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: No unconscious limiters + a lifetime of compulsively throwing heavy things at people = SuperStrength.
* ClothingDamage: Shizuo can inflict the whole-body version with one punch.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Let's see: Saika is totally {{Yandere}} for him, both [[ShipTease Vorona]] and [[PrecociousCrush Akane]] are heavily implied to have feelings for him, Orihara twins adore him, and one girl in the anime openly tries to pick him up. Yet he considers himself [[IAmNotPretty unpopular]].
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Even if the [[strike:crazy]] {{Badass}} part tends to come out more readily than other examples he counts beause of his behavior when not in rage mode.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Before he dyed his hair blond. Both fan and colored light novel illustrations like giving him gold eyes, thus reasserting the trope.
* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler: Quits being a Dollars member after several of them try to kidnap someone, being disgusted that the group would stoop so low (unbeknownst to him the entire event was orchestrated by none other than Izaya).]]
* DelinquentHair: Starting from middle school, he started dying his hair blond as a [[DistinguishingMark warning]] for others not to take him lightly.
* DescriptionCut: "I hate violence... I'm not lying."
* DestructiveSavior: Starts leaning in this direction (as opposed to a mostly directionless PersonOfMassDestruction) after encountering Saika.
* {{Determinator}}: He's spent years breaking or fracturing every part of his body but despite being a medical impossibility, he's too hardcore to be brought down by something as menial as ''permanently crippling injury.''
* DisproportionateRetribution: His first violent episode involved him picking up a ''fridge'' (at age 7) and try to flatten his brother with it because he ate ''his'' pudding cup; he admits in retrospect that he went overboard and isn't even sure how he was able to pick the fridge up in the first place. Post-CharacterDevelopment he starts to tone it down a bit (annoying people are now flicked in the forehead instead of PunchedAcrossTheRoom), [[FingerpokeOfDoom but it's not as much a relief for the victims as one would think.]]
* DistinguishingMark: Shizuo dyed his hair in middle school in order to [[InvokedTrope invoke this]]. Tom suggested that other kids would be less likely to pick fights with him if they knew who to not piss off. It worked up until Izaya got involved.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: Shizuo once lightly tapped Shinra on the forehead for calling him stupid. [[FingerpokeOfDoom It gave him a concussion]].
-->'''Shinra:''' Shizuo, you realize a flick of your finger in my forehead does as much damage as a knee kick from any other person, don't you? Then try to be more careful, please? What, concussion? How long have I been unconscious?
* TheDreaded: Shizuo terrifies about half of Ikebukuro's population simply with his mere presence. The other half typically fails to connect him with his reputation until it's too late (after which they join the first half).
-->'''Shizuo:''' You know, people can die from being gazed at. There has to be at least a 0.0000000000000675% chance.\\
'''Luckless thug:''' How many zeroes was that, you punk? Huh, Mr. Bartender? ''[{{Beat}}] '' [[OhCrap B-Bartender? No way...!]]\\
'''Shizuo:''' That said, you can't really complain if you die from being beat up, can you?!
* DumbMuscle: Not outright stupid, but he's definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed.
* DynamicEntry: Flying vending machines are Shizuo's special way of saying hello.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: When reporter Shuji manages to secure an interview with the most terrifying man in Ikebukuro, he's a little shocked that Shizuo meets ''none'' of his physical expectations (except, perhaps ironically, in height) and insists that he [[HypocriticalHumor hates violence]]. Then Shuji gets the [[TooDumbToLive brilliant idea]] of trying to provoke him into action and namedrops [[BerserkButton Izaya]]. [[GoneHorriblyRight His plan works entirely too well]]. In the anime this scene is altered somewhat with said reporter asking too many questions about Shizuo's brother, the end result is the same.
-->'''Shuji''': I'm... flying...
* FatalFlaw: His severe anger issues, which he acknowledges.
* FeelNoPain: Implied, given his [[MajorInjuryUnderreaction response to grievous bodily harm]]. In the anime, it's far more clear. He got shot at one point, but didn't even notice until he saw blood.
** Somewhat Played With. In episode 5 of season 2, Shizuo is assaulted [[spoiler: with a modified taser gun, courtesy of the young miss Akane Awakusu.]] He ''does'' acknowledge it hurts, so it's perhaps more accurate to say he has an ''abnormally high pain threshold'' rather than none at all.
* FingerpokeOfDoom:
** After Shizuo starts learning to reign in his temper a little, he responds to mildly annoying people by lightly flicking or poking them in the forehead. To the victims, [[DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength this feels like somebody smacked them in the face with a baseball bat]].
** Poor Masaomi gets a taste of one, [[ here]].
* [[invoked]] FoeYay: Shizuo x Izaya. This fact is explicitly noted and lampshaded several times in the anime. Mainly only by [[YaoiFangirl Erika]], who appears to have her fangirl glasses on 24/7. The amount of FoeYay they get, particularly in the novels, is minimal compared to other examples in this show.
* FreakinessShame: Not only is [[spoiler:Saika]]'s the only declaration of love Shizuo's ''ever had in his life'', but it's for the very reason he's been ostracized and come to hate himself for: his uncontrollable strength and violent temper.
* FreudianExcuse: Inverted. Shizuo notes that, his own rage issues aside, his home life and upbringing were positively idyllic. There was no abuse or trauma, his parents were caring, his little brother was one of the best you can have -- heck, he didn't even watch any violent TV... Yet it just makes his problems ''more'' troubling for him because it's convinced him that he only has himself to blame.
* FriendlessBackground: Shizuo's social circle during his adolescence (excepting one year in junior high where Tom befriended him) was restricted to [[VitriolicBestBuds Shinra]].
* FriendToAllChildren: He has ''very'' soft spot on children. In fact, after [[TokenMiniMoe Akane]] tries to tase him thanks to [[ManipulativeBastard Izaya]], he holds no grudges against her and treats like like a little sister[=/=]daughter to him (after all, it was Izaya who set Akane up on this). This trope is apparently justified, since he never had any friends throughout his childhood life (and still has hard time making friends around his age [[TheBerserker due to the fierce nature when he's angry]]) and is able to relate with children more.
* HairTriggerTemper: [[Pantheon/AngerEmotions The God]] of it. Anything can set Shizuo off. "Getting stabbed with pens" is an exception, oddly enough (though that's because he found the situation very amusing).
* HateAtFirstSight: He and Izaya were instantly at enmity: Shizuo can see through Izaya and see him for what he is and Izaya hates him in return for seeing through his plots despite being DumbMuscle.
* HealingFactor: Shinra has made an offhand comment in volume 4 that Shizuo heals unnaturally fast. Whether or not this is how he survived [[spoiler:Horada shooting him]] is unknown.
* HeartbrokenBadass: Shizuo's first crush [[ did not end well]]. It makes his rage issues worse because he blames himself.
* HeroicRROD: Shizuo doesn't have the mental blocks that prevents humans from ripping muscle off bone or breaking bones from overexertion, so he naturally grew up (successfully) recovering from catastrophic injury. By the main narrative he's become strong enough to not hurt himself so easily, and he's grown a preposterously high pain threshold.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Shizuo's issues with anger and being unable to control himself have shot his self-esteem to hell. It's bad enough that when [[spoiler:Saika declares its love for him]], he responds with confusion -- because he can't imagine ''why'' someone could love him.
* HeroicWillpower: [[spoiler:Saika and her children enter a victim's mind through their pain and fear. Since Shizuo feels no pain and is afraid of nothing besides his own power, he's immune.]]
* HeroInsurance:
** As it turns out, Shizuo has something akin to ''literal'' hero insurance: the company he works for pays for the property damage he causes and docks it from his pay in turn.
** The cops have given up on arresting him.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: Because of his rage mode he is a poor hero, but if he could improve on this, he would be receptive to it.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Tom, the one person not afraid of "badass dude" and has been his friend since high school.
* HeyYou: Shizuo's generally very bad at using [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics honorifics]].
* HighPressureEmotion: Sort of. While his expression doesn't seem to change, [[ he's too red]] to get away with a LuminescentBlush. Just compare it to the color of his hand.
* HollywoodHealing: Just take a look at [[ his childhood X-rays]] and marvel at the fact that this man can even ''walk''.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Shizuo eventually develops a BigBrotherInstinct[=/=]IntergenerationalFriendship with a ten-year-old [[MafiaPrincess Yakuza Princess]] named Akane. Given that Shizuo already [[ towers over most people]], the size difference between the two is large.
* HypocrisyNod: Shizuo hates violence. Yes, really. He also hates the fact that he has violent unstoppable rages.
* IAmAMonster: Thinks of himself as such because of his freakish strength and easy to trigger rage.
* IAmNotPretty: Shizuo is unaware of his own attractiveness.
-->'''Tom:''' You'll find a cute girlfriend sooner or later. You've got a face like your top idol brother's after all.
-->'''Shizuo:''' Do I really?
* ICanStillFight: Bullets, extensive surgery, and heavy sedatives will ''not'' prevent Shizuo from getting right back up [[ImplacableMan and hunting your ass down.]]
-->'''Shinra:''' You had two bullets in your body, and considerable muscle damage in your legs and abdomen... so why are you walking around like nothing's happened?
-->'''Shizuo:''' Why? 'Cause I can.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: He'd rather ''not'' be super strong and violent.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Even though he's used everything including the kitchen sink as a weapon/projectile, Shizuo seems to have a preference for street signs and vending machines, depending on how far away [[strike:Izaya]] the object of his ire is.
* ImprovisedWeapon: Street signs, chairs, desks, a fridge, a flagpole, soccer goalposts, guardrails, mailboxes, trash cans, vending machines, playground slides, motorcycles, the side door from Togusa's van, a crash barrier, a freeway sign...
* InformedLoner: A mild example but Shizuo likes to complain about his supposed loneliness and even compares himself to Izaya in that matter. In reality he has three friends that care about him (Celty, Tom and Shinra), is on good terms with his brother and possesses a number of acquaintances (Simon, Kadota and his gang and also the Orihara twins). While his social life might not be particularly rich, a loner he is not.
* InsaneTrollLogic:
** Shizuo tends to get ''very'' irrational when he's angry (ie. insisting that beating the crap out of someone for looking at you funny is justifiable self defense because [[LiesDamnedLiesAndStatistics there's a 0.0000000000000000000675% chance that you can kill someone with a glare]]).
** Ironically, most uninformed people in-universe would accuse of him of this given how he swears Izaya is behind everything.... because [[ProperlyParanoid he's absolutely correct.]]
* ItsPersonal: Shizuo's relationship with Izaya did not originally start out as this. It was HateAtFirstSight, and the two just couldn't stand each other. It was only in the intervening years after their first meeting and the start of the series did it become personal, with Izaya making Shizuo's life a living hell by sicking nearly ever gang in the city on him and framing him for numerous crimes, and with Shizuo (most of the time unknowingly) screwing up Izaya's plans.
* ItWasAGift: Shizuo's bartender suits were a present from his brother, which is why he continues to wear them despite being fired from the aforementioned job quite awhile ago. Damaging them, just like everything else, is one of his {{Berserk Button}}s.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Inverted; he literally ''was''...
-->'''Shizuo''': [stamps his foot on the ground, bellowing loudly at his phone] DAMMIT! THERE'S TOO MANY MESSAGES!!! IT WON'T STOP BEEPING AND IT'S PISSING ME OFF!! I CAN'T READ THEM FAST ENOUGH! [sees Horada leering at Anri, a nose bleed present on his face] RRRAAGHGHH [screenshot of Horada airborne]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Shizuo is rough, violent and has serious temper issues, but he's a good guy underneath all that.
* JustAFleshWound: Silly Horada, [[spoiler:bullets]] can't kill Shizuo.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: Shizuo is nothing if not enthusiastic in protecting his little brother. It's generally a good idea for strangers [[BerserkButton NOT]] to ask him about his little brother...
* LargeHam: During his rages he is loud and imposing but otherwise he's calm.
* LazyBum: His official character profile lists his only hobby as "basking in the sun", he tells Celty that she "works too hard and needs to relax more", and in his "Special Voice" on the character CD he tells her that his favorite types of days are ones where there's "just nothing to do".
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[ "The Legend of the Strongest Man in Ikebukuro"]]
* LeParkour: Shizuo teaches it to himself to chase Izaya.
* LightningBruiser: [[SuperStrength Super Strong]], [[SuperToughness Super Tough]], and fast and agile enough to [[LeParkour swing from building to building]].
* LikesOlderWomen: His PrecociousCrush aside, he is stated as one of these in the 8th novel.
* LimitedWardrobe: Justified -- he does indeed have a closet full of bartender suits. [[ItWasAGift They were a gift from his brother]].
* MadeOfIron: Shizuo technically doesn't have superpowers. The man gets stabbed in both legs and remarks "Doesn't even hurt." Later, he is shot in the leg and side and thinks he slipped in the rain until he sees the blood. Afterwards he simply walks to Shinra's house, and is still unfazed by his normally life-threatening wounds. Shizuo's apparent superhuman endurance is acknowledged in canon: [[BackAlleyDoctor Shinra]] hates treating Shizuo, because he never leaves an operation without destroying at least one of his best scalpels in the process. Shizuo's body isn't Made of Iron: it's ''harder'' than it.
* MadnessMantra: "Kill'em kill'em kill'em kill'em..." This is Inversion of the trope in that it's an active attempt on Shizuo's part to ''not'' go into an UnstoppableRage. In his words:
-->'''Shizuo:''' You know something, Celty? There's power in words. So what I'm doing now is holding myself back with words so I don't start destroying just about everything.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction:
** Not phased at all at a ballpoint pen piercing straight through the palm of his hand. "Hmm... if I pull it out, it'll bleed. Should I get a bandage? Or maybe superglue?"
** Shizuo was shot twice, one bullet in his leg and one in his stomach, [[spoiler: during a scuffle with some Yellow Scarves.]] He failed to realize he was shot ''at all'' until he started slipping in his own blood. Before noticing it, he thought he was on the ground because he tripped on something. His response? [[CaptainObvious "... Ah, I was shot."]]
* MeaningfulName: Double subverted. The meaning of his name ("Quiet man, peaceful island") is about as far from fitting as one can get. It's also exactly what he ''wants'' to be.
* MemeticBadass: {{In-universe}}; in Ikebukuro anyone who doesn't know who he is [[TheDitz is considered less intelligent than a public school dropout.]]
%% Putting a trope into a secondary bullet of another trope is against the Examples Indentation rules. Leave MemeticBadass at first level, please.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: It's been noted that Shizuo's pretty skinny for a guy known to uproot vending machines and overturn cars on a regular basis. [[JustifiedTrope His muscle is denser than granite and real life people]] are limited to using only a third of their true strength and if they do it can injure them severely. Shizuo lacks this limit, hence the childhood spent with broken bones.
* MyGreatestFailure: Seriously injuring the very woman he was attempting to save. The novels note that this was not an isolated incident.
* NiceGuy: When not factoring in the temper, he's not only really nice, he's also insecure and a bit childish, even!
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Just about any of his fights that don't involve Izaya or Simon.
* NoodleIncident: Shizuo's has a number of these with Izaya, ranging from an off-hand comment about being framed by him to something called the "Real Flesh In The Art Room" incident during their high school days, to being framed for an unspecified crime that causes Shizuo to lose his job as a bartender.
* NoSocialSkills: A lot of Shizuo's general rudeness (such as forgoing [[HeyYou honorifics]], not remembering people's names, etc.) isn't because he's a jerk, but because he's [[FriendlessBackground never talked to people enough to learn basic social etiquette]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler: After getting out of jail, he ''ignores'' Izaya's presence so that he can keep Vorona from fighting him.]]
* OneManArmy: What other man can single handedly beat down [[spoiler:all but one of the Slashers]] with his bare hands?
-->'''Shizuo:''' How many are here? ...let's just go with ''a lot''. Yeah...this should be enough. With this, I finally think I can go all-out.
* PapaWolf: His reaction to [[spoiler: Izaya telling a girl that Shizuo will kill her family]] is [[TranquilFury terrifying to behold.]]
* PerpetualFrowner: Shizuo is almost never seen without his trademark scowl.
* PerpetualPoverty: Thanks to the arrangement mentioned above in HeroInsurance, Shizuo doesn't get a lot of extra funds. He doesn't mind -- in fact, he's surprised he's paid ''at all''.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Celty. It helps that they're both seen as 'freaks' due to the SuperStrength and headless thing.
* PrecociousCrush: Shizuo had his own Precocious Crush on a shopkeeper when he was around ten or so. [[spoiler:Then he walked by her store one day and saw a group of thugs assaulting her. She was seriously injured in his resulting violent episode, and Shizuo was too ashamed to see her ever again.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: Shizuo maintains that 99% of all the weird crap that goes down in Ikebukuro is completely and utterly Izaya's fault, whether it be gang wars or hordes of knife-wielding zombies. Made-up-on-the-spot statistics aside, he's right.
* PsychopathicManchild: As shown in his bio, his preferences to food are like that of a kid's (i.e. liking milk and desserts[=/=]sweet things whilst not liking bitter food and beer).
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: Shizuo punches a thug so hard the thug's clothes flew off.
* RedBaron: Ikebukuro's God of Destruction (occasionally with the added subtitle of "in a Bartender's Suit").
* RedOniBlueOni: Red, to Izaya's blue. He's loud and passionate and very angry.
** In spite of that, Shizuo is actually the ''less'' aggressive of the two of them. While he despises Izaya's very existence and would love nothing more than to murder him, he'd also be perfectly content if Izaya stayed out of his life completely. Izaya is usually the one who starts it, and even when Shizuo chases him down for something it's usually because Izaya provoked him in some way.
* ReluctantWarrior: HairTriggerTemper aside, Shizuo doesn't like fighting.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Averted when it turned out that Shizuo didn't build up the requisite physical resistance needed to handle his SuperStrength until around high school. Cue the montage of the many fractures he suffered from as a result.
* RunningGag:
** His inability to remember Anri.
--->'''Anri''': [sees Shizuo bleeding copiously] "Heiwajima-san... what happened to you?"
--->'''Shizuo''': "Huh? Who're you again?"
* ScreamingWarrior: Screams accompany any heavy objects he throws at Izaya
%%* ShipTease:
%%** [[ With Vorona.]]
%%** Narita's Bacon Lettuce April Fool.
* ShootingSuperman: Blood aside but the fact that Seiji managed to damage him ''at all'' is impressive. Vorona couldn't penetrate his chest more than half a centimeter with a ballistic knife, and Shinra's destroyed some of his best scalpels operating on him. According to [[WordOfGod Narita]], the pens Seiji used are advertised to hold up against a ''tank''.
* ShrinkingViolet: Not to Anri's extent, but when out of rage mode he's rather shy and awkward.
* SiblingYinYang: With Kasuka who is weaker and meeker and better at interacting with others.
* SlasherSmile: Shizuo is fond of sporting one of these right before he's about to hurt someone.
* SmokingIsCool: Considering how his power works, it might make him ''stronger''.
* SpannerInTheWorks: To Izaya. Just how much of one becomes apparent in volumes 5 and 6: [[spoiler:Most of Izaya's trolling and screwing over of Shizuo is an effort to keep him out of his ''real'' plans. One of these backfires spectacularly when Shizuo demonstrates just a smidgen more self-restraint than he did in a similar past setup and sets of a chain of events that brings [[TheYakuza Awakusu-kai]] down on Izaya's head.]]
* SuperStrength: You can tell Shizuo is out and about by the flying vending machines.
* SuperToughness: Technically, you ''can'' injure Shizuo -- You'll just find it damn near impossible to make a wound any deeper than half a centimeter, and he probably won't feel a thing.
* SweetTooth: His bio notes that he has a preference for sweet foods.
* TameHisAnger: His goal is to someday become strong enough to control his anger.
* TooDumbToFool: Shizuo is far too simple to be manipulated by Izaya. This is the very reason why Izaya detests Shizuo so much.
-->'''Izaya:''' One second he's dumb as an ox and the next he's sharp as a whip...that's why I hate him so much.
* TooDumbToLive: Pissing him off is generally considered to be this. The ''only'' exception to this is Izaya, mainly because he is one of the few people capable of fighting him without suffering grievous harm, and mainly because he does it so often. Note that this isn't from any lack of trying on Shizuo's part.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Shizuo ''really'' likes milk, as Tom found out when he once agreed to buy him dinner. It stems from his PrecociousCrush on the shopkeeper he knew as a kid. This can be further seen when Shizuo is at his place angrily mumbling which only serves to anger him even further until Kasuka pulls out a bottle of milk.
* TranquilFury:
** After finding out that [[spoiler: Izaya told a little girl that Shizuo was going to kill her family.]]
-->'''Shizuo''': Don't worry, Izaya and I are friends. What he told you is a misunderstanding. In fact, I'm going to sort out this misunderstanding ''right now''. ''(To Tom, one they're out of earshot)'' If I get arrested for murder tomorrow, tell everyone that I was fired yesterday.
** At the end of Volume 12, [[spoiler:Izaya finally decides to end his rivalry with Shizuo, with the following attempt nearly killing Vorona. He calls Shizuo to taunt him about it, but his enemy is uncharacteristically silent. After Izaya finally finishes, Shizuo simply tells him "Goodbye," and hangs up. It's noted that Shizuo used ''abayo'', a more cultural version of ''sayanora'' which means goodbye... '''''forever'''''. The next volume has Shizuo's FinalBattle with Izaya, and not ''once'' does he raise his voice.]]
* UltimateJobSecurity: Lampshaded in a side story. Most people (including and especially Shizuo himself) are surprised that Shizuo hasn't been fired yet.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Anyone who doesn't connect him to the "God of Destruction" gives him little respect. Then they're flying through the air and learn their lessons.
* UninhibitedMusclePower: The source of his strength is his lack of restraint. He also shows why this inhibition is necessary in real life. He must have broken the same bones a dozen times growing up.
* UnskilledButStrong: He doesn't know any formal styles of fighting. He sticks with 'rip a lampost out of the ground and swing it.'
* TheUnsmile: At one point in Vol. 5, Shizuo forgoes his usual SlasherSmile for the most [[ uncharacteristically dorky smile imaginable]]. Shinra has only one thing to say in response.
-->'''Shinra:''' I'm sorry, Celty, but it may turn out that I have to die before you. Here. ''Now.''
** [[TranquilFury This is the angriest Shizuo has ''ever'' been.]] This is right after Izaya [[spoiler: told a little girl that Shizuo was going to kill her family.]] He's giving this face because he doesn't want to frighten the little girl.
* UnstoppableRage: Often when growing up. [[spoiler:At the climax of the Slasher arc, he learns to control it.]]
* UnwantedHarem: Shizuo seems to attract dangerous females. His harem includes one yandere katana, an underage Yakuza princess and a certain Russian assassin. If Yaoi Fangirls (in and out of universe) are to be believed, Izaya should be added to this list.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Shinra. It's like his relationship with Izaya but with annoyance instead of malice and no flying vending machines.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Comes with the job of being a(n ex-)bartender.
* WorldsStrongestMan: {{Canon}} and WordOfGod contained in ''Narita Saikyou Q&A'' confirms that Shizuo is the strongest character in his home series and one of the top five in TheVerse. The other four are: Ronnie Schiatto and Claire Stanfield from LightNovel/{{Baccano}} rivaling him at 3rd place; Hawking from ''LightNovel/{{Vamp}}'', who is essentially a ''black hole'' fond of leaping through the universe; and No.37564 "Mob Combatant" from ''LightNovel/HariyamaSan, Center of the World'', a {{Mook}} who went FromNobodyToNightmare, topping all of them simply because Narita made "strongest man in the history of time" the basis for his character.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Previous romantic developments have gone horribly, ''horribly'' wrong for just about everyone involved thanks to his temper (see HeartbrokenBadass and PrecociousCrush). As a result, Shizuo is generally disgusted enough at the thought of violence against women that it's difficult to provoke him into it.
* WouldntHurtAChild: Shizuo has it deeply ingrained into his head that ChildrenAreInnocent. Thus when a small child does something like try to murder him with a heavily modified taser, the event simply doesn't register.
* YouWillBeSpared: Found Seiji attacking him amusing enough that he let him off lightly... by headbutting him. This was ''after'' he threw him into the side of a truck.
-->'''Shizuo''': I like you a lot more than Izaya, which is why I'm going to let you off the hook with just this.
* YouWontLikeMeWhenImAngry: He doesn't like his own anger, and attributes his problems to his temper and resultant strength.

Leader of a pretty small-time gang consisting of himself, Erika, Walker, and Saburo. Also works as a tile layer.

Formerly affiliated with the defunct Blue Squares, now affiliated with the Dollars.

* AntiHero: Despite being a gang leader, none of his actions are villainous, or at least have villainous intentions. In fact, he ''left'' his former gang because they wanted him to do things ForTheEvulz.
* {{Badass}}: Getting into a street fight with this man is not a good idea, as quite a few thugs have learned the hard way.
* BadassNormal: One of the best, if not ''the'' best fighter in the cast aside from Shizuo, and he's just a normal guy with a van.

** It's no wonder Erika and Walker [[LauncherOfAThousandShips ship each other and everyone else with him.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: In Episode 24, he and a bunch of his friends infiltrate the Yellow Scarves' hideout and jump in to save Masaomi.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: For Erika, Walker ''and'' Saburo (Albeit to a lesser extent for the latter).
* ColonelBadass: Even though [[spoiler:Mikado]] is the leader of the Dollars, Kadota is the main face of the muscle side of the Dollars.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Kadota and his van gang used to be a part of the Blue Square color gang. * LauncherOfAThousandShips: In-universe, Erika and Walker pair him with everyone they know, including each other.
* TheLeader: The level-headed one in charge of his van gang. He's the only one in that thing with their head on straight.
* MoralityChain: It's thanks to this guy Walker and Erika's sociopathic tendencies tend more towards [[ComedicSociopathy comedic]] as opposed to horrifying. On a related note, he has their UndyingLoyalty and would do ANYTHING for him, which means everyone in Ikebukuro should be really grateful he's a NiceGuy.
* NeighbourhoodFriendlyGangsters: He's functionally the public face of the Dollars, and tries to make sure the group never goes over the line.
* NiceHat: Almost never seen without a backwards beret.
* OneHourWorkWeek: Works as a tile layer, and like Walker and Erika he has really flexible work hours.
* OnlySaneMan: Arguably one of the few mentally and emotionally well-balanced characters in [[DysfunctionJunction the entire cast]]. Oh, and the first two are also {{Torture Technician}}s. Poor Kadota.

* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Why he left the Blue Squares.
* StraightMan: To Erika and Walker. And Togusa too, to a lesser extent.
* {{Tsundere}}: Walker declares Kyohei one in episode 3.

[[folder: Both ]]

* BirdsOfAFeather: They're both crazy {{Otaku}}s with a penchant for "manga-based" torture methods. This is probably the reason why they're as close to each other as they are.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}s: They both launch into a rather extensive conversation in episode 20 where they characterize Chief Chef of Russian Sushi as a character in a cooking manga, and invent a backstory involving him serving with the Red Army and fighting TheMafiya. [[spoiler:Which, of course, is [[TheCuckooLanderWasRight distressingly on the mark]].]]
* CrackPairing: Not one themselves, but they're certainly not adverse to shipping them in-universe.

* {{Otaku}}: Big anime/manga otaku who don't really distinguish between fiction and reality; in fact, they fit the negative stereotype that otaku are psychotic, although they're [[HeroicComedicSociopath still basically "the good guys"]].
* ShipperOnDeck: Erika's Shizuo/Izaya shipping aside, Walker once wrote Celty/Shinra fanfic. They both ship each other with Kadota.

* ThoseTwoGuys: Subverted. They appear to be just a pair of {{Otaku}} hanging around with Kyohei and Saburo, but they're just as involved in the Mob Wars as everyone else is.
* {{Torture Technician}}s: They enjoy torturing people for information using methods from manga and novels. Case in point: that guy they wanted to interrogate at the end of episode 6, they were going to [[EyeScream brand his eyeballs with solder]], and can be seen explaining/acting out [[ToThePain how the "procedure" will go]] right in front of him in graphic detail.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Kadota, and both have made it clear they would do anything he asked without question.
* UnholyMatrimony: [[AxeCrazy Crazy as hell]], but the happiest couple in the series so far.

[[folder: Erika ]]

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Erika is hinted to have this.
* IOweYouMyLife: [[spoiler: Erika states that Kadota saved her from the darkness and that she would follow him anywhere.]]
* LovableSexManiac: It doesn't help that she's a {{yaoi fangirl}} and gropes Anri.
* NiceHat: Erika's is definitely on the "normal" end, but still pretty spiffy.
* TheNicknamer: Examples include Yumacchi, Iza-Iza/Izayan, Shizu-Shizu/Shizu-chan and Mikapuu.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: [[ Erika does not know the meaning of the phrase "sexual harrassment"]].
* OneTruePairing: In-universe; Erika declares [[FoeYay Shizuo x Izaya]] is the best couple of Ikebukuro in the second OVA.
* ShippingGoggles: Erika has them on in-universe.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: Erika's inner narrative is written in MillsAndBoonProse. Her [[CombatCommentator Combat Commentary]] on a fight between Shizuo and Izaya, for example:
-->"The hot fluid flowed into the depths of his throat. While its distinctive smell lingered on Izaya's olfactory nerves, Shizuo's sordid desire was provoked further..."
* TooMuchInformation: Erika's never learned that it's in bad form to tell your friends that you fantasize about them having gay sex with each other.
-->'''Erika:''' Speaking of which, seems like [[FoeYay Dotachin and that Chikage guy are nurturing some kind of friendship after fighting each other!]]
-->'''Kadota:''' Stop talking in that way, it makes people twitch when you do.
-->'''Erika:''' Then I'll just say it! From my point of view, it was totally a "Thanks for the yaoibait, it was delicious" kind of moment!
* YaoiFangirl: She ships Shizuo/Izaya [[spoiler: and Walker/Kadota]].

[[folder: Walker ]]

* BewareTheNiceOnes: Don't make Walker angry. You may get yourself stabbed in the hand with a pair of chopsticks. Or set on fire.
* {{Bishonen}}: The novels describe him and Erika as being good looking enough to be models, if not for their Otaku tendencies.
* ButNotTooForeign: It's regularly implied in the LightNovels that Walker is biracial, probably with American or European ancestry.
* DaydreamBeliever: Walker's a certifiable Otakin.
* EyesAlwaysShut: He does open them briefly when he's planning to do something especially devious (like in episode 18 when he sets some Blue Squares on fire), revealing that he possesses gold eyes. Lampshaded here:
-->'''Walker''': I'd glare at you, but they're closed!
* GratuitousEnglish: His ''name'', though the books regularly imply that he's probably [[ButNotTooForeign biracial]].
* HypocriticalHumor: Walker may rag on Erika for her excessive {{Yaoi Fangirl}} tendencies (particularly her tendency to write her friends into elaborate slash fantasies) but, slash aside, he's just as bad (he once wrote a Kadota/Erika BDSM fic).
-->'''Walker:''' Wait, Karisawa-san, please stop! Why are you fantasizing about Kadota-san and me in a Boys Love relationship!? I've said over and over that people like Karisawa-san are the reason the society has a negative impression of otaku culture in general! I say Kadota-san and I should become heroes in Galgames who win over the hearts of loads and loads of heroines! Actually, we can even do without Kadota-san! I'll be happy as long as I have this bondaged right hand blessed with the power of ancient moe-moe peoples so that every girl who sees my right hand would go 'Woo ~'...
* KillItWithFire: Walker sets the Blue Squares leader's van on fire with molotovs when he and the rest of the gang rescue Saki.
* MyGreatestFailure: Walker once published a doujin novel sometime ago. He is not happy with it ''at all.'' Erika however loves to tease him about it.

[-''"I love you. I love you. I love you."''-]

A [[EvilWeapon cursed katana]] with a consciousness that is driven by its desire to [[LoveFreak love as many humans as possible]]. Unfortunately, the only way it can show its love for them is through [[{{Yandere}} cutting them]].
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: The Yellow Scarves' base is a warehouse, with huge metal doors. Saika cut through them like they weren't even there. Also, Saika was able to cleave Celty's head from her body when Shingen was wielding it.
* AncientArtifact: Saika has been recorded to have existed for centuries.
* AssimilationPlot: Saika's ultimate goal is to merge its consciousness with the rest of humanity, en masse. To achieve this, it wants to infect every living human with its curse and fill them with its [[MadnessMantra "loving whispers."]]
* AxCrazy: Potentially does this to anyone who can't control it.
* {{Badass}}: Via its various proxies.
* BadassFamily: A [[HiveMind very, very strange one]] and only through technicality but [[SinisterSurveillance the daughter blades have proven very useful.]] Doubles as a BadassArmy.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Actually has pretty decent values, it just doesn't understand why humans might not like being cut and mind controlled.
%%* BrokenRecord
* CoolSword: Or rather, a wickedly sharp katana.
* EvilWeapon: Saika is a {{Curse}}d sword that really likes cutting humans. Luckily, in Anri's hands, it can't act on those urges.
* FaceFullOfAlienWingWong: "Saika's giving birth. It puts its children into the souls of those it cuts."
* GoodWeaponEvilWeapon: The sword itself is demonic, but its wielder [[BadPowersGoodPeople can potentially use its powers for good]].
* HitAndRunPoster: The user Saika enters Izaya's chatroom multiple times after it has just attacked someone to spam the words: 'cut', 'love', and especially 'mother' over and over. Later, it changes its tune to Shizuo Heiwajima.
* HiveMind: Saika's "children".
* HiveQueen: The original sword lets its wielder do this.
* HungryWeapon: Saika loves humanity so much that it will cut them to add them to its HiveMind.
* HypocriticalHumor: Saika hates monsters and non-humans of any sort ([[AndZoidberg and Izaya]], but most people hate Izaya). Saika is demonic and, nominally, [[TalkingWeapon an inanimate object.]]
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: Saika ''really'' likes strong people, like Shizuo.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: [[EvilWeapon Demon]] {{yandere}} katanas that can [[AbsurdlySharpBlade slice through STEEL DOORS]].
* LoveFreak: Albeit, a very twisted one.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: It can overwhelm the mind of its wielder this way, causing them to become obsessive and violent over whoever they are in love with.
* LoveYouAndEverybody: Although it once loved individual human beings, after many centuries of this it soon began harboring an obsessive love for humanity as a whole. The one exception to its all-encompassing love is Izaya though, who is the first human that has ever repulsed Saika. Non-humans also don't count.
* MadnessMantra: Saika communicates almost exclusively in various {{Madness Mantra}}s of "I love you."
* MasterSwordsman: The sword grants its wielder incredible swordsmanship in exchange for hearing it endlessly talk about its love for humans.
* MindRape: Anyone who cannot overcome its possession will succumb to this. It puts a literal twist on this too, considering how it is [[FridgeHorror impregnating human souls with its children.]]
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Saika sometimes pops in with suggestions for whatever problem Anri has at the moment. The suggested solution is ''always'' to let Saika "love" them.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Slasher.
* OneGenderRace: Saika is referred to as a mother, and all of its children are called "daughters."
* ThePowerOfLove: Subverted by Saika and its children. They constantly claim to be powered by the love that they have for humanity, but their actions are [[{{Yandere}} obsessive and violent]].
* PsychicLink: The sword communicates to its wielder through their mind, where it talks nonstop about its love for people, how much it wants to cut them all, and to suggest what the wielder ought to let them do (i.e. cut more people). It also does this to anyone who gets cut by it and fears pain
* RedEyesTakeWarning: An obvious symptom of either possessing the sword or getting possessed by it.
* SockPuppet: Kanra attempts to ban Saika each time it enters the chatroom to no avail. This is because completely different people (infected by the sword) are logging in each time from different hosts, thus bypassing the IP ban.
* SoulCuttingBlade: Saika can cut human souls with its blade, which is how it takes over their minds.
* StalkerWithACrush: To Shizuo. [[ One of its children can be seen staring fixedly at him]] from behind at one point.
* TalkingWeapon: Loudly. ''[[MadnessMantra INCESSANTLY.]]'' But only to [[HearingVoices its wielder.]]
* {{Troll}}: How the user Saika is perceived online at first due to its heavy spamming of the same messages on any message board related to Ikebukuro. It is [[MindRape far]] [[TheVirus worse]], though.
* TheVirus: Saika can take control of any human it has injured, except those who don't fear pain.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Saika's "voice" sounds like a mass of people speaking all at once, repeating words of love endlessly.
* WalkingSpoiler
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Despite being a non-human itself, Saika despises "monsters" like Celty and reserves its love only to humans.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: When you're a sword, "cut it" becomes your answer to everything.
* WordSaladPhilosophy: Saika's explanation for why it loves humans so much quickly devolves into this in the chatroom.
* {{Yandere}}: For all of humanity, but ''especially'' Shizuo. Luckily, its wielder Anri is not.
