''Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories'' is a sequel to the first game taking place on a new world with mostly new characters. The protagonist's group is tracking down the legendary Overlord Zenon to defeat him and put an end to his curse, which is turning humans into demons.

For characters that appear in multiple games in the series, see [[Characters/{{Disgaea}} the main character sheet]].

Adell is the main character of the game and apparently the last remaining unaltered human on Veldime. He has a strong sense of honor and duty, but he tends to favor rushing headfirst into situations and just beating up the problem. Despite this, he's actually fairly intelligent, but would rather solve things quickly. Furthermore, after awhile characters begin to note that he simply likes fighting for its own sake, which he denies by claiming that he's doing everything to fulfill his oaths and protect his family.

Adell is actually adopted: When he was two, his parents had to leave on a mysterious errand and left him in the care of their closest friends assuring them they would be back when their business was complete. They did not return, which is what inspired Adell to always fulfill his promises. Further, after an experience with a succubus when he was younger (minds out of the gutter!), he dislikes both girls and demons.

* BattleCouple: With Rozalin during his later cameos. The two always have a 99% team attack chance with each other and they always come as a pair.
* BloodKnight: He says he's doing everything just to help his family, but after seeing him get excited at the prospect of a hard fight one too many times, Rozalin starts calling him a battle maniac.
* BodyguardCrush: He starts out guarding Rozalin because it's the honorable thing to do and refuses to treat her like a hostage. Later, the two begin "[[BelligerentSexualTension fighting.]]"
* BrilliantButLazy: Adell is entirely capable of being intelligent. He just doesn't feel like it most of the time, because bashing problems into a fine red pulp is a lot easier.
* CatchPhrase: These tropes [[EarWorm are just his style]].
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: To Laharl. While Laharl is a CardCarryingVillain who declares himself Overlord and spends the story securing his throne, Adell is a self-designated hero who spends the game fighting to overthrow Overlord Zenon. Further, Laharl is a half-demon who rejects his human heritage, while Adell [[spoiler:is a full demon who thinks he's a human]].
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: Regardless of level, Adell will effortlessly block a Chaos Impact from a 1000-level Etna. [[HopelessBossFight The ensuing fight, however...]]
* {{Determinator}}: Adell actually deals extra damage against opponents of higher level than himself, which is generally the default in Disgaea. In-story, he also puts himself in the way of attacks that ought to kill him and keeps fighting.
* DoesNotLikeWomen: After a DealWithTheDevil gone sour, Adell defaults to disliking girls. He grudgingly admits that despite being a demon and a girl, Rozalin is still different.
* {{Fanboy}}: A 'Dark Hero Days' DLC reveals Adell to be a ''huge'' fan of Plenair. Rather than fighting her like other DLC characters, Adell will freak out and ask for her autograph, then hide in his room for two hours out of embarrassment, causing Plenair to join the group out of pity.
* TheFettered: What would Adell be without his oaths? Especially since, as mentioned above, he's loathe to acknowledge his love of battle.
* FieryRedhead: He's pretty calm normally, but when it comes to fighting he gets quite excited and fiery. Fiery enough to have fire based specials, even.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Adell and Rozalin's combo attack chance rising as the story progresses, starting at 0% in chapter 1 and ending at 99%. A ghost teases that master/pupil relations have higher combo rates then tells them love ought to do the same. How are you two doing, by the way?
* GeniusBruiser: When one of the trials in Zenon's Coliseum is solving a complex Geo Puzzle, he takes but a few seconds to find the solution, much to the surprise of Tink, who had taken him for a DumbMuscle.
** In the tutorial stages, ''he'' is the one teaching Rozalin the ins and out of combat tactics.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Adell's strategy generally revolves around 'Punch it ''harder'' this time.' It works quite well.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Adell has some facial scars he got off of a succubus, but they're on his cheeks and aren't particularly visible.
* HappilyAdopted: He was left by his parents in the care of their best friends before they left to fulfill some other duty. [[spoiler:They were demon refugees who left to confront Zenon, but lost and were enslaved.]]
* HeroesFightBarehanded: Adell finds weapons [[CatchPhrase just not [his] style]], and fights barehanded. He ''can'' use other weapons, but he's not very good with them.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Averted. Adell is the only series protagonist to favor another weapon (fists) over swords. Swords are his second-best weapon, though. (Swords are, however, better weapons for using Adell's unique specials, which scale off of Adell's Attack stat instead of 50/50 Attack and Speed like Fist specials do.)
* HonorBeforeReason: Rozalin finds her trust in him frustrating and insensible since he actually knows for a fact that she's been lying to him.
* HotBlooded: Though normally calm, when he gets closer to an interesting fight, he gets excited. During the tournament, he begins weirding out his siblings by not being happy at the prospect of fighting Zenon.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: He thinks he's a human throughout the story [[spoiler:due to his parents' faulty memory and his own birth defect giving him normal ears, but he's actually a demon himself]].
* IdiotHair: He has a massive red lock sticking up out of the top of his head... but he's actually not as dumb as he looks.
* IdiotHero: He always favors direct confrontations, though it turns out he's choosing to be that way. He ''could'' think through problems.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Adell gets to a point where he doesn't hold Rozalin's incredible feminine sexiness against her. It takes a while.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: When Pleinair is made available as DLC, the scene where she is recruited has Adell ask for her autograph instead of challenging her to battle. Unfortunately, he gets so embarrassed by what he did, he runs to his room in tears.
* LastOfHisKind: Known as the last unaltered human in Veldime. It turns out to be because [[spoiler:he was never a human in the first place. His adopted parents' memory was muddled and they forgot that Shura and Selion, his parents, were demon refugees.]]
* MeaningfulName: Adell's name is derived from "adel", which is Arabic for "justice" or "fairness".
* OnlySaneMan: As far as Adell is concerned, he's the one normal guy surrounded by freaks.
* OverratedAndUnderleveled: He begins the game at Level 1, as befitting the hero of an RPG. But he's already traveled all over the world of Veldime looking for Overlord Zenon, and Veldime has some pretty dangerous regions to search through. When he couldn't find the Overlord, he instead traveled all over Veldime ''again'' to collect the ingredients his mother needed to summon Zenon -- which included killing a few mighty beasts. So, he's supposed to be much stronger in the story than his level in the game indicates. He even looks down on Rozalin at first despite her starting just as strong.
* PlayingWithFire: All of Adell's special attacks are fire-based.
* PowerFist: Adell's best weapons and the ones he uses instory regardless of what you equip him with are things like brass knuckles and heavy gloves.
* ThePowerOfTrust: Adell's sheer commitment to believing in Rozalin gets her to grudgingly stop attempting to get him killed and instead try to think of a way to compromise between her father and the humans.
* ThePromise: Whenever he's asked why he's going so far to do something, his only response is that he promised to do so and that he fulfills all his promises. [[spoiler:Even if you turn out to be a million-year-old Demon God threatening to kill him and everyone he knows.]]
* SelfMadeOrphan: His parents are [[spoiler:the bosses of the penultimate chapter. Around the same time, his adopted parents remember what happened to them and indicate they'll tell Adell what happened to his parents after he finishes defeating Zenon.]]
* SexyBacklessOutfit: RareMaleExample, his upper back is exposed by his shirt.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Around chapter 10, Adell and Rozalin start going this way about each other. [[EveryoneCanSeeIt They don't fool anybody.]] As of ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4| A Promise Unforgotten}}'', they now have trouble convincing people that they're not ''married''.
-->'''Etna''': Awww, you have one of ''those'' kinds of relationship!
* ShoutOut: Really, Adell is a walking ShoutOut to the ''[[VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters King of Fighters]]'' series. [[http://imgur.com/v2MPYs8 Case in point]].
* SupportingProtagonist: He's TheHero, but Rozalin is the focus of the story.
* TokenHuman: He is the only one that hasn't been turned into a demon by Zenon's curse. [[spoiler:Subverted as he is a human-looking demon.]]
* WeirdnessMagnet: He decides he must be a freak magnet in chapter six since all these weirdos keep picking fights and joining his group.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Assumes there is a reason that he isn't affected by Zenon's curse and that that is the reason he'll be able to defeat him. [[spoiler:He's half-right, it's just that the reason Zenon's curse doesn't turn him into a demon is because he's already one.]]

!!!Voiced by: Creator/YukariTamura (JP), Creator/WendeeLee (EN)

Rozalin is the daughter of Overlord Zenon, though her very existence was a tightly guarded secret from the world. At the beginning of the game, Adell's mother attempts to summon Overlord Zenon, but only succeeds in getting Rozalin to appear, much to everyone's confusion. Bound by the summoning ritual, Rozalin cannot leave on her own and must help lead them to her father. Due to being kept in isolation, she is quite sheltered from the world and more than a little spoiled. Despite this, she turns out to be surprisingly nice and quickly becomes close to both Taro and Hanako. Still, she's quite arrogant and prickly, leading to [[BelligerentSexualTension much banter]] with Adell.

* AdaptationalWimp: From gunfighting badass [[spoiler:with a SuperPoweredEvilSide]] to an untrained princess [[spoiler:whose full power is mostly unrevealed]] in the manga.
* AmnesiacDissonance: Rozalin is a little grumpy, but otherwise fairly friendly. [[spoiler:Overlord Zenon, though, is convinced that everyone will betray her and will kill them before they can.]]
* AntiquatedLinguistics: In the Japanese. Rozalin uses archaic speech patterns and pronouns and sounds like a noblewoman from the Edo period, if not earlier.
* BattleCouple: With Adell during her later cameos. The two always have a 99% team attack chance with each other and they always come as a pair.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' imply that Overlord Zenon does not care for her, or that Rozalin is not his true daughter. The fact that Rozalin reacts so strongly is more than a little telling about her own doubts.
* BuxomIsBetter: Her biggest critique of Etna is the demon lord's [[ACupAngst lack of breasts]].
* CatchPhrase: "For I am the one and only daughter of Overlord Zenon." [[spoiler:and, as her real self, "I am a being of solitude."]]
* ChainedHeat: Rozalin is bound to fulfill the terms of the summon and thus cannot leave on her own before she takes Adell to Zenon. If Adell were to break the summon instead, he would die. [[spoiler:Of course, neither one actually challenges this: If they had, either could have left easily.]]
* ChekhovsGun: The Four-Leaf Clover emblem that Rozalin displays as proof of her connection to Overlord Zenon. [[spoiler:It's actually a magical seal that keeps her SuperpoweredEvilSide in check. When she is first summoned by Adell's mother, a similar emblem appears and shatters, hinting at the emblem's true purpose as a seal.]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: She starts off cold and hostile to Adell, but she grows attached to Hanako and Taro and eventually admits that she does not really want Adell to die anymore.
* DoomedHometown: After she's summoned, Zenon has her palace destroyed and her servants killed offscreen. [[spoiler:Fifteen years ago, he did the same to the Snow Clan that she reincarnated into.]]
* ErmineCapeEffect: Always wearing her dress. Sure it's LimitedWardrobe, but the effect is the same.
* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: She starts off pretty weak and spoiled, but learns to fight over time. She still resists being a frontline combatant, though.
* FlowerMotifs: [[SomethingAboutARose Roses.]] Her name (Rozalin/Rosalind), signature weapon (Noble Rose), and unique specials (Rose Thorns and Rose Liberation) all make mention of the flower.
* FriendToAllChildren: Though hostile to Adell, she appreciates Hanako and Taro. She decides to make them her servants, something Taro embraces wholeheartedly.
* {{Gainaxing}}: She bounces with any large movement, even just walking a few spaces.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration
** Adell and Rozalin's combo attack chance rise as the story progresses, starting at 0% in chapter 1 and ending at 99%.
** In her backstory, [[spoiler:she used the reincarnation feature to shed most of her power]].
* GatlingGood[=/=]MoreDakka: Her "Rose Thorn" special ability.
* GiantWaistRibbon: In addition to all the other ribbons on her dress. [[spoiler:Much like the other members of the Snow Clan.]]
* TheGunslinger: She's best suited towards using guns.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Though a little [[{{Tsundere}} prickly]], Rozalin is a surprisingly caring person for someone raised on demon ethics.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Around chapter 10, Adell and Rozalin start going this way about each other. They don't fool anybody. As of ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4| A Promise Unforgotten}}'', they now have trouble convincing people that they're not ''married''.
* HellishPupils: She has white, slitted pupils that Yukimaru notes is a common trait of the Snow Clan. Rozalin suggests that perhaps her mother was from there, though she doesn't know for sure. [[spoiler:Which is technically true. And so is her father. And neither one is Zenon.]]
* HelloNurse: Story and gameplay; Rozalin powers up nearby male units. One of her unique specials, Kneel Before Me, is also one of the best offensive buffs in the game, simultaneously raising every possible offensive stat except for Speed on up to five units.
* HighClassGloves: Her royal dress includes long gloves.
* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler:Is the reincarnated form of Zenon. She is only technically this as she looks totally normal. But when she is [[SuperpoweredEvilSide fully awakened]], [[OhCrap then]] [[AxCrazy the shit]] [[LetsGetDangerous really hits the fan]].]]
* AnIcePerson: She can learn Ice magic up to Omega level in later games. [[spoiler:This hints at Rozalin being a member of Yukimaru's Snow Clan.]]
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: Rozalin's top looks like it is only kept on by virtue of ribbons and a corset.
* InstantRunes: To prove her lineage, she can make a giant four-leaf clover appear, which is a known symbol of Zenon. [[spoiler:Of course, which Zenon isn't clear. She probably did it to herself, though.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's grumpy and arrogant, but she's also quite protective of people around her. Slowly mellows out to SpoiledSweet.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Fights in a massive, bulky dress at all times.
* MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: Substitute Overlord in for mad scientist and you've got it. She's sheltered and spoiled, but when she starts meeting more people, she begins to get uneasy about what her father has been doing.
* MsFanservice: Her bouncy chest, skimpy and tight dress bodice, sweet yet haughty demeanor.
* {{Ojou}}: She's a rather sheltered princess, though she adapts pretty quickly to a poorer lifestyle after the summon.
* PimpedOutDress: She wears a huge poofy black dress covered with red and yellow trim and ribbons.
* PrettyFreeloader: After being summoned, she stays with Adell's family. In ''VideogGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten'' DLC, Adell refers to her as a 'Freeloader who's staying at my house'. Her reason for trying to join the Hades Party is to buy a bigger house for all of them.
* RichBitch: Subverted. At first, she and Tink scoff at Hanako's simple cooking, but she agrees to try it with little prompting and agrees that it's delicious.
* RoyalBlood: To anyone who asks or more frequently those who don't, she will proudly declare her lineage and relation to Overlord Zenon. [[spoiler:She's actually from a clan of ninja in this current incarnation. As Zenon, who knows?]]
* SmallGirlBigGun: Normally, she uses some variation of a handgun, but for her Rose Thorns skill, she pulls out a pair of Gatling guns.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: If the seal on her is broken or weakened, her original memories return with her power. Doing so makes her powerful enough to [[spoiler:give a beatdown on Laharl bad enough that he actually runs away as quickly as possible, but she then views everything as an enemy. Apparently, everyone Zenon has ever gotten close to betrayed her, thus "[[CatchPhrase I am a being of solitude]]."]]
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:She's not the daughter of Overlord Zenon. She ''is'' Overlord Zenon.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: She does start out very weak, but halfway through the story, she's much stronger. She's not a front-line fighter, but it's indicated that her contribution to the fights is pretty high. Indeed, she gets annoyed or perhaps even hurt when Adell doesn't want to admit how good she's gotten.
* {{Tsundere}}: She has characters calling her out on it and a database entry in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' that uses her as an example.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: She's pretty critical of Adell's recklessness and love of fighting.
* WingedHumanoid: She sports a pair of large, batlike wings, though considering how little she uses them, they're more of an accessory than anything. [[spoiler:Even when flying as Overlord Zenon, she appears to be doing it with magic, not her wings.]]

!!!Voiced by: Creator/HiroShimono (JP), Creator/WendeeLee (EN)

Taro is Adell's little brother. He has cow-like horns, dresses in white with black spots, and has special abilities with milk. He's something of a momma's boy and rather timid, but he grows infatuated with Rozalin and requests to be her servant.

* AmbidextrousSprite: That band-aid appears on both sides of his face in cut scenes, depending on which way he's facing.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: In the worst ending, [[spoiler:Adell, possessed by Zenon, brutally kills and devours him]].
* HappinessInSlavery: He will, under his own volition, become Rozalin's slave and his title will change to "Rozy's Slave."
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The feminine boy to Hanako's masculine girl.
* MoralityPet: Both Rozalin and Axel show their kinder sides by making sure he's okay.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: The blue boy to Hanako's pink girl.
* PrecociousCrush: He has a huge crush on Rozalin and wants to be her servant. It even becomes his class when he joins.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: His normal attack and "Crybaby Strikes" are him just flailing his fists around. But it's effective nonetheless, especially with him being a demon, and his counterattacking ability.
* RedOniBlueOni: The cautious and cowardly blue oni to Hanako's red.
* RescueArc: Two consecutive chapters had Axel kidnapping Taro and Hanako as bait for Adelle and Rozalin. Axel is defeated and Hanako rescued in the first chapter, while the second one is dedicated solely to rescuing Taro.
* StoneWall: Starts with decent movement but poor jump, but has 130% modifiers in Defence and Resistance, has a DEF and RES buffing technique, and an attack that lowers enemy attack, hitl and intelligence, and also possesses a self-healing move, making him a useful "paladin" style [[note]]a style of tanking focused on reducing attack effectiveness then healing what gets through, as opposed to a "control" tank or a "blink" tank[[/note]] tank until the post-game.
* TokenMiniMoe: While he's older than Hanako, at 11, he's still a cute little kid.

!!!Voiced by: Creator/KaoriMizuhashi (JP), Creator/StephanieSheh (EN)

Hanako is Adell and Taro's younger sister. Like Taro, she was born after the curse began and doesn't care about becoming human again, but since she wants to help Adell and finds adventuring fun, she wants to tag along with him. She likes to bully Taro and begins hero worshiping Etna, wishing to grow up to be a Demon Lord 'as cool as Etna and twice as sexier!'

* AgeInappropriateDress: She's 9 and wears tiny strips of white cloth.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: In the worst ending, [[spoiler:Adell, possessed by Zenon, brutally kills and devours her]].
* FutureBadass: The final downloadable character is her 10 years in the future. You have to fight her to recruit her like the other DLC characters, and afterward it seems as though she was basically beating the entire rest of the group using only a fraction of her power.
* FutureMeScaresMe: Her 10 years older future self does ''not'' take kindly to being summoned and seriously intimidates her.
* IChooseToStay: In the good ending, [[spoiler:she leaves to be Etna's apprentice and find a way to permanently become a demon, since Adell's success turned her into a human. Her future self is back to being a demon, and, what's more, a demon lord on the level of an overlord, just like her idol.]]
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Masculine girl to Taro's feminine boy.
* MoralityPet: Etna's a lot nicer to her then she is to the rest of the party. [[spoiler:She even TakesTheBullet for her when Zenon strikes at the rest of the party.]]
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: The pink girl to Taro's blue boy.
* RedOniBlueOni: The rowdy and trouble-making red oni to Taro's blue oni.
* SupremeChef: She's ''very'' good at cooking; everyone agrees. ''Everyone'' feels that way, including otherwise unpleasable beings such as Etna and Laharl. [[spoiler:Which ensures she'll be treated well under Etna's tutelage.]]
* TokenMiniMoe: At 9, she's the youngest party member.

!!!Voiced by: Creator/ChihiroSuzuki (JP), Creator/DaveWittenberg (EN)

Around the time Rozalin was summoned from her palace, another of Zenon's palaces was attacked by a mysterious stranger who destroyed the building and turned Rozalin's only friend, Tink, into a bizarre floating frog. He has two personalities, one blue and one red. The blue personality is polite, though selfish and cowardly. The red one is rude as well as selfish and cowardly and enjoys hitting on women. Both of them are the resident ButtMonkey charged by the Netherworld court with the crime of his mere existence.

* BalefulPolymorph: He was transformed into a floating frog by a mysterious attacker that he couldn't identify. At first, he assumes it must have been Etna, but upon meeting her, finds out she's nothing like the one who cursed him. Next he thinks it's Yukimaru based on dressing like his attacker, but decides it's not her either. The next guess is right. [[spoiler:It's Yukimaru's older brother.]]
* BatterUp: His "Nail Bat" attack, which would be pretty brutal if it wasn't shown as comic violence.
* {{Bishonen}}: His true form is a handsome teenager, though he's still a jerk.
* ButtMonkey: He's constantly abused and attacked. Kinda deserves it too.
* CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkeys: He has the accent and the behavior, but there's no France in Veldime.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He gets jealous of Adell briefly when he joins, but it's not dwelt on further.
* TheDandy: In his true form, he dresses well and looks pretty effeminate.
* DirtyCoward: He's very easily intimidated and is only coming along because Rozalin is making him. That and wanting to get his true form back.
* FragileSpeedster: His blue form has great movement and high a speed stat, but as a fairly frail monster character Tink is pretty squishy.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Tink is an ass to everyone and is treated accordingly.
* {{Jerkass}}: He's entirely self-centered and violent when he thinks he can get away with it.
* JustAStupidAccent: 'E speeks with ze French accent all ze time, oui?
* LethalJokeCharacter: His red form gets a stat buff from any adjacent female characters. Any adjacent Beastmaster, as well as Rozalin, trigger both his red form's buff and their own buff effects, giving him truly obscene stat bonuses of 150% or more.
* MotorMouth: His unique vocal trait in the Japanese dub.
* SplitPersonality: He has a red and blue personality. The former is perverted and angry while the latter is polite and reserved, but both are still cowardly jerks. You can switch between them in combat: The red personality gets a boost from adjacent female characters while the blue form gets a more useful movement bonus, making him great for speeding through the item world quickly; it's tied with critical-health Mothmen for the longest possible movement.
* SuicideAttack: Tink's most powerful attack.
-->"Goodbye Tink: Tink sacrifices himself, [[ButtMonkey but nobody cares]]."

During the tournament before the halfway point in the game, Adell's group runs across a short ninja who is also seeking to defeat Zenon and enters the tournament to get a chance to confront him. After winning by forfeit throughout the matches, she fights against Adell in the semifinals and loses. Following this, Adell reluctantly talks her out of committing {{seppuku}} and inviting her to the group so they can confront Zenon together.

Yukimaru was one of three survivors of the Snow Clan, a group of ninjas that were decimated by Zenon fifteen years ago. After their master finished teaching her and her brother, he passed away after leaving them with the mission to defeat Zenon. She is a demon like Rozalin and Tink, but has a view of honor similar to Adell's.

* AbortedArc: Despite explicitly only joining the party due to developing a crush on Adell, her attraction to him is never brought up or even referenced after her recruitment scene.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: She uses the archaic 'de gozaru' in the Japanese version. She says young ninja do it to focus their chi.
* BadassAdorable: The cutest ninja in existence (at least in the Disgaea games).
* CutesyDwarf: She's 20, but looks 12.
* DoomedHometown: Zenon completely annihilated the Snow Clan's village prior to the start of the story. The only survivors were Yukimaru, her elder brother Fubuki, the village elder who saved them[[spoiler:, and Rozalin, who was born there]].
* DrivenToSuicide: PlayedForLaughs, she twice (reluctantly) attempts to kill herself for perceived failures or slights against her honor. The first time, the group tries to let her get on with it until it's clear she's waiting for them to object and the second time Adell tells her to knock it off.
* ElementalEyeColours: Blue eyes correlates to her ice powers.
* GenderBlenderName: Names ending in "-maru" are usually masculine. Fits with her brother, Fubuki, who has a feminine name.
* GratuitousNinja: One of the few survivors of an old ninja clan... who lived in a world that wouldn't actually need their services.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Although dressed in white, due to living in a snowy land, she still wears it where the camouflage wouldn't work.
* AnIcePerson: Her attacks are ice related.
* NinjaLog: One of her unique skills has her doing this, but with a snowman instead of a log.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Yukimaru is 20, and the oldest member of the team until Etna joins; she doesn't look a day over 12 and acts that way too.
* {{Seppuku}}: When she decides her mission is impossible, she says the honourable thing to do is to commit suicide. Adell reluctantly convinces her that she ought to use any method she has to win, like [[DefeatMeansFriendship forcing herself into the group that defeated her.]]
* VerbalTic: In the English version, she speaks mostly modern English but instead adds 'zam' to her sentences, which is, again, supposedly to focus her chi. [[spoiler:When she drops this, it's a sign that her [[VoluntaryShapeshifting Henge-master of a brother]] is pretending to be her.]]

Once, Axel was known as the Dark Hero. He was rich, famous, and popular. Now, he is a disgrace only remembered to be laughed at due to tarnishing the evil image of his sponsors. He is on a quest to regain his title and fame, but is never taken seriously. After his first fight with Adell, his producers claim he was murdered and start embezzling money from his show while hiding any evidence that he is alive, much to his annoyance. After a few defeats by Adell, he begins to view him as his rival, at which point the more serious second half of the story begins.

Despite his [[CardCarryingVillain Dark Hero title]], Axel is actually a surprisingly decent guy. Though the Dark Hero has no scruples, Axel views it as a character he plays and is not really willing to do anything ''too'' evil. Which is what got him in trouble in the first place.

* AutobotsRockOut: When the game whips out "Let's Dance at the Last Battle" for the final battle of Axel Mode, you know Axel is going to be kicking ass and taking names.
* BadassLongcoat: Axel's stylish white and purple coat is one of his signatures. It's viewed as a NotSoBadassLongcoat in universe, however, since most characters see it as being just as gaudy and obnoxious as its owner.
* BelievingTheirOwnLies: He seems to be very good at spinning his own outlandish scenarios and wholeheartedly believing in them.
* BigDamnHeroes
** During chapter five, he makes up for putting Taro in danger by playing a monster controlling flute no one else could use.
** During the last chapter, [[spoiler:he does it again... but then he goes and drops all the controlled monsters onto the crowd he tricked into coming.]]
* BigOlEyebrows: Shaped like lightning bolts!
* BreakoutCharacter: Similar to Etna from the previous game, Axel's popularity got him his own story mode in the UpdatedRerelease as well as guest appearances in all the following games, even returning as a main character in ''Disgaea 4''.
* ButtMonkey: Axel tends to get abused, beaten, and mocked whenever he appears. After the tournament, the universe stops trying to make him suffer.
* ChainedByFashion: Wears chains like bracelets.
* ChickMagnet: Manages to get a group of female followers in Axel Mode...except they're all monsters and a masochistic [[DudeLooksLikeALady crossdressing angel.]]
* CoolLoser: For all of the talk about him being a wannabe, a loser, and a has-been, Axel is still an incredibly powerful demon rock star with awesome powers and a slick sense of style.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Along with being a strong unit in gameplay, Axel is capable of stepping up and being genuinely competent when he needs to, usually when his family is being threatened.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The UpdatedRerelease has Axel Mode, a prologue to the main game that explains why he's in Veldime in the first place.
* {{Determinator}}: He is utterly unshakable in his desire to regain his title.
* DirtyCoward: Cowardice is a good villainous trait, so he embraces it as the Dark Hero. [[spoiler: When Adell takes pity on him and allows hm to accompany the party in the fight against fake Zenon at the end of the TournamentArc, he runs away right before any of the action starts.]]
* DubNameChange: His original Japanese name was Akutare/[[SpellMyNameWithAnS Octalley]].
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: As shown in Axel Mode, he initially refuses to host the travel show in Veldime because it would separate him from his family.
* {{Expy}}: Shares a lot of similarities with Alex from ''Makai Kingdom'', right down to his name being an anagram of Alex's.
* ForegoneConclusion: As Axel's story is a prequel and in Adell's story he starts down on his luck and barely scraping together a living, you can tell he's not going to do that well by the end.
* FriendToAllChildren: Axel is shown to be very good with kids (despite the majority making fun of him). His siblings adore him greatly. While Hanako and Taro mock Axel, Axel is shown to not actually harm them despite threatening them the entire time.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Axel is often called weak and pathetic by the majority of the cast, but when you recruit him post-game or face him as a boss, he actually has stats about as good as Adell's and with comparable specials.
* GoldfishPoopGang: He's a boss fight for four of the first half a dozen chapters, but isn't taken seriously at all. During the last confrontation, he says that of course he knows he can't win. That's not the point: The point is that that part can be edited out!
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Is strongest with punching weapons.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Parodied. [[spoiler: At the end of the tournament arc, Adell allows him to fight alongside the party against Zenon so that he can acquire footage of himself fighting Zenon and reignite his career. When the actual fight starts, Axel hightails it out of the room before so much as attempting to throw a punch.]] He can be a more conventional example of one if you manage to acquire the rare cell phone item that calls him, wherein he appears in battle with his level scaled to match whoever called him and assists in fighting enemies, but can't be controlled directly by the player. This item can only be used when he isn't participating in the story at all.
* HiddenDepths: Despite being called an idiot, Axel is shown to be very good in music and acting. In fact, Pink clearly states that if Axel focused a little more into the acting, he would be better off in this career than taking other jobs that concerned fighting. And Axel declares he's better at singing than fighting. He also has more baggage than your average ButtMonkey, leading him to have lots of issues.
* HighCollarOfDoom: A dark hero can't be dark without one.
* HotBlooded: Though dumb, he's even more passionate than Adell.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Eventually, Adell feels so bad for beating him up all the time that he allows Axel to tag along to the first Zenon confrontation.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He actually does know that his career is in shambles and that nobody cares about him anymore. However, he hides this behind his arrogant and self-centered attitude because he always tries to be in character.
* InformedAttribute: Axel is said to fail at everything he does and his concerts aren't worth going to. Axel is actually a good singer, though not so much when it comes to poetry.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Frequently employs this, especially in his cameo appearances.
* InstrumentOfMurder: His guitar when he uses Shocking Soul or his Love Dynamite S.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He kidnaps Taro and Hanako, but the moment Taro is put in danger, he's absolutely horrified and goes to rescue him himself. In his backstory, he also ruined his Dark Hero career by refusing to play along with a script that was scaring his little brother, and at the end of the game, he saves the protagonists from a bunch of reinforcements.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: Even when his brother isn't in real danger, he's not willing to let him down at all. As he puts it, he was a big brother before he was a Dark Hero.
* MasterActor: No one believes him when he claims as such, but as shown in Dark Hero Days, he is shown to get into the character so well that he forgets his own personality. This is also shown in ''Disgaea 4'' where he calls himself Warden Axel and generally acts differently than he did in the second game. He tells the group that he fooled himself when acting, and while no one believes him, Axel wouldn't go as low as [[spoiler:trying to shoot Valvatorez when his back is turned and hitting Artina instead]].
* MockMillionaire: Despite his flashy clothing and attitude and constant mentions of his status as a (former) famous celebrity, Axel is actually dirt poor and barely scraping by, to the point of rarely even being able to afford food for himself. Further emphasized by his house, which is a tiny hovel with a large cardboard cut out of an impressive-looking mansion in front of it.
* MusicalAssassin: Along with one of his special abilities Love Dynamite S, in the actual game, Axel is shown to be able to use music to his advantage, which has led to some BigDamnHeroes moments.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When he endangers Taro, he's extremely upset. The director shrugs it off by saying it's the price of taking hostages, but Axel rejects him by saying Axel the person and Axel the Dark Hero are entirely different things.
* NobleDemon: Despite being a shameless underhanded bastard at times (which has to do with his acting more than his actual character), he does have something of a sense of honour -- Such as when he accidentally endangers Adell's AdorablyPrecociousChild brother in his vendetta. According to him, the Dark Hero will pull any dirty trick to win, but Axel the actual person is completely different and has a few places he draws the line.
* NotSoDifferent: There's several parallels between him and Adell. They specialize in the same weapons, both are HotBlooded, are devoted to their families, and cling to their respective ideals in the face of scorn and mockery. Axel goes along with what's expected of demons simply because that's what's expected of a Dark Hero. Axel even says at one point that he's adopted, though it's left vague as to whether it's true or not.
* PetTheDog
** After taking some hostages, when one is actually put in danger, Axel immediately goes to help out.
** Axel Mode shows clearly that everything Axel does is for his family and that he'd trade his career away in a second for them. In fact, he already ''did.''
* PluckyComicRelief: For the most part, he's around to keep the mood from getting too gloomy. After the tournament when the plot gets more serious, he stops showing up so much.
* ThePollyanna: Despite the hardship he faces in Dark Hero Days and the treatment the cast gives him, he generally remains positive.
* ThePowerOfRock: His special attacks tend to involve him playing the guitar... [[SubvertedTrope and then electrocuting people.]]
* RecurringBoss: He's fought in the first, second, fourth, and seventh chapters.
* RedemptionPromotion: When Axel fights driven by his selfishness, he's treated as a joke. When he fights for a good cause, he's actually very effective.
* SecretCharacter: While he ''does'' technically join the party very briefly in the story, he leaves it literally minutes later, before the player has any opportunity to even look at his ''stat screen'', let alone use him at all in battle. Outside of this, he can only be used in the [[BrutalBonusLevel Land of Carnage]] during chapters where he isn't doing anything in the story. ''Dark Hero Days'' adds a secret Axel mode, where he becomes the main playable character, but he remains a Land of Carnage exclusive in the main story.
* ShockAndAwe: Some of his attacks are electric-based.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He is generally forgotten by the public image, but continues to get himself back on TV. However...
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Doubling as NoPronunciationGuide, his Japanese name is either romanized as Akutare (straight from the original katakana) or Octalley, with Nippon Ichi flip-flopping between both spellings. NISA avoids the confusion by giving him the name Axel instead.
* StepfordSmiler: He acts goofy when other people are around, but when by himself or with just the director, it's clear that he's pretty anxious about his inability to get back into the spotlight and support his family.
* TechnicalPacifist: During Dark Hero Days, Axel mumbles to himself that he hates fighting more than anything. However, his character roles and the fact that he's a demon forces him to fight, as he would rather run away than deal damage to the opponent...which is why he's almost always getting beaten up by the other characters.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: "White Tiger". Subverted in that the boss battle against him where it first comes into play isn't all that difficult. Played straight when it finally appears in Axel Mode.
* ThrowTheDogABone: In the ending, [[spoiler:he has regained his infamy and reputation by pretending the entire Zenon thing was a hoax]].
* UnknownRival: In the Netherworld tournament, Axel refers to Adell as his rival and Adell wonders how beating him up all the time makes them rivals.
* UnusualEyebrows: He has eyebrows shaped like lightning bolts.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He always wears a loose white jacket that leaves his chest exposed.
* WorthIt: Getting beat up by demon overlords for tricking him was worth the price for all the fame and girls he got.
* YouShallNotPass: It seems he pulls this at the midpoint of chapter 13, [[spoiler:but he actually just lures all the baciel away and drops them onto an audience he had gathered]].

!!!Voiced by: Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (JP), Creator/KirkThornton (EN)

Yukimaru's elder brother. Figuratively and literally blind in his attempts to avenge his clan on Zenon, and perfectly willing to murder Rozalin to draw him out.

* AloofBigBrother: A pretty classic one to Yukimaru.
* AnAxeToGrind: Both figuratively and literally, as his stats and proficiencies favor axes.
* BlindWeaponmaster: Unlike Axel, Fubuki is consistently treated as an extremely competent and deadly threat in spite of his disbility. However, the main drawback of his preferred weapons, axes, is low accuracy.
* ByTheEyesOfTheBlind: Is able to discern a number of things about Rozalin that even ''she'' doesn't know, possibly using [[AuraVision aura vision]].
* CainAndAbel: He and Yukimaru both have the same goal, but while Yukimaru is honorable and friendly, Fubuki is aggressive, cold, and ruthless.
* DeathSeeker: After he was harmed at the start of Chapter 11, he decided to go through one blaze of glory and defeat Zenon once and for all, even if it costed his own life. Yukimaru snapped him out of this.
* AFatherToHisMen: Once he takes in [[spoiler:Etna's Prinny Squad]], he retrains them from incompetent bumblers into a fearsome and dangerous fighting force, using loyalty rather than fear to motivate them.
* HeelFaceTurn: After killing Fake Zenon once and seeing that it doesn't stick, he returns in the endgame to assist in a mission and teach Yukimaru her most powerful special. He can later be recruited as a bonus character, but only in the Land of Carnage.
* KnightOfCerebus: Compared to [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Axel]], Fubuki's antics are always presented as being far more of a genuine threat and he never receives any jokes. He even manages to make the ''prinnies'' surprisingly formidable.
* OverratedAndUnderleveled: The game makes Fubuki out to be a highly-skilled and dangerous opponent who gives the party trouble every time they cross paths. When he finally joins the party, he begins at level 100, which, while being extremely high within the main story, makes him close to worthless in the Land Of Carnage maps that he is exclusively usable on, where the enemies start in the low hundreds with stats equivalent to having reincarnated several times. While he can be a perfectly good unit if trained properly, both the amount of hype the story gives him and the amount of work it takes to get him really don't measure up to his initial stats as a party member.
* RevengeBeforeReason: Rejects almost every attempt to talk him down or reason with him.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: He's out to destroy Zenon and anyone associated with him. He first comes into conflict with the group when he attacks Rozalin on the hunch that killing her will make Zenon appear.
* SecretCharacter: Can be recruited and used in the [[BrutalBonusLevel Land of Carnage]] maps after clearing the second-to-last level of the final chapter. Compared to Kurtis, who's always there, and Axel, who appears there multiple times throughout the game, Fubuki has by far the smallest window of availability as a playable character.
* TheUnfettered: Unlike his honorable sister, there is very little he will not do to draw out and kill Zenon.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: His Henge arts allow him to disguise himself as a variety of other living things. Prinnies, snowmen, [[spoiler:Yukimaru, Tink...]]

[[folder:Overlord Zenon]]

!!!Voiced by: Creator/NorioWakamoto (JP), Creator/LexLang (EN)

Overlord Zenon is a legendary demon known as [[RedBaron "The God Of All Overlords"]] after massacring 99 Overlords at once and a thousand in total, after which he vanished. In the present, Zenon is corrupting the world of Veldime for unknown reasons while laying low, inspiring Adell to attempt to defeat him and remove his curse.

Though Adell views him as an ultimate enemy, Rozalin believes utterly in her father and cites her pampered upbringing as proof of his love for her... though he's never bothered to actually meet her.

The truth is that he's actually a fake. He tracked down the real Overlord Zenon a long time ago, seeking revenge for some unspecified wrong. While Zenon was weakened, he took over and claimed to be the real thing.

* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: in the manga, he is a much rounder character [[spoiler:where his desire for revenge against the True Zenon ends up conflicting with his desire to be Rozalin's father]].
* BackFromTheDead: He's killed twice before you get a chance to fight him. First, he underestimates Etna and gets stomped, then does it again to Fubuki. [[spoiler:The True Zenon eventually vaporizes him.]]
* TheBattleDidntCount: [[spoiler:After you beat him, he just summons up more power from his curse and defeats your party.]]
* BigBad: Adell and the rest of the group are pursuing him in order to end the curse on Veldime or get revenge, respectively. Rozalin just wants to meet him, though.
* CaptainOblivious: Unless specifically told something, he's completely unaware of what's going on in the world or even in his tournament. So when the location of his castle is put on the news, the first thing he says upon meeting the party (after being attacked by multiple Overlords throughout the day) is "How does everyone know where I live?!"
* CurbStompBattle: After the final battle, he powers up more and flattens the party, [[spoiler:only to be on the receiving end of one when the true Zenon is awakened]].
* TheDreaded: Everyone is afraid of Zenon. Defeating 100 Overlords in a single night will do that for your reputation.
** It's also played with. Everyone is afraid of him, [[ThePerilsOfBeingTheBest but his legendary reputation also attracts countless challengers]], requiring him to remain hidden just to keep from getting constantly harassed. [[spoiler:This is shown when his whereabouts are revealed to the Netherworld News and all kinds of Overlords come a-knockin'.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: When Rozalin appears before him, he appears controlling but concerned. [[spoiler:It's all an act. It was his idea of revenge on her. In the manga, it appears [[BecomingTheMask he did grow to care]].]]
* EvilIsBigger: The nature of the game's spritework makes it difficult to make him appear any bigger than the heroes, but concept art notes that his body is very large and muscular. The manga makes this more visible, with Adell barely coming up above Zenon's waist.
* FinalBoss: The last level is a fight against him all by himself. That is, unless you're a complete jerk and keep teamkilling Rozalin, [[spoiler:which causes a boss fight against the True Zenon and the bad end even if you win]].
* OneWingedAngel: Assumes a more monstrous and powerful form for the final battle.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: He is certainly a powerful overlord in his own right, having killed many of the challengers who faced him, [[spoiler: beat Adell's parents]] and defeats the party in the game's ending. [[spoiler: But his power is utterly eclipsed by the True Zenon.]]
* OverprotectiveDad: He feels that Rozalin is better off kept away from the outside world and wants to kill Adell and the rest for exposing her. [[spoiler:Subverted in that it's not for her own good, but his way of getting revenge on the True Zenon, feeling that he's punishing Zenon by forcing her to live an idle and lonely life. Played straight in the manga where his fatherly instincts end up conflicting with his desire for revenge.]]
* ResurrectiveImmortality: He's killed several times through the story, but it doesn't stick so long as he has human consciences to drain.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: He has a real bad habit of this, which tends to work out badly. First, he fails to realize that despite the title, Etna is much stronger than he is. Then he gets oneshotted by Fubuki, necessitating another revival. [[spoiler:Finally, at the end, he first assumes he can easily beat Adell's group, requiring him to drain more power to actually do so and risk mass revolt. ''Then'' he picks a fight with the real Zenon and finally dies for good.]]
* UnknownRival: [[spoiler:After he brags about his scheme for twisted vengence, True Zenon's response is basically, "Why should I care?"]]
* TheUnreveal: [[spoiler:His real name; after the true Zenon makes herself known, he's always referred to as just Fake Zenon.]]

!Other characters

Axel's companion in his quest for fame and glory, the Director is a huge fan of his and wants to see him back in the spotlight, while retaining the spirit of the Dark Hero.

* AscendedFanboy: In-universe, he's obviously a huge fan of Axel and relishes the chance to work with him.
* CampGay: It is ''strongly'' implied he's actually in love with Axel. Take his comment "this isn't the Dark Hero I fell in love with", for example.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Even Axel in the remake's Axel Mode just refers to him as "Director".
* TheLancer: Axel's right-hand and faithful ally.
* UndyingLoyalty: No matter how many times Axel gets beaten down, the Director is there to help him back up.
* [[WhatTheHellHero What the Hell, Dark Hero?]]: While Axel finally gets his fame back, the Director feels he's sold out and betrayed the spirit of the Dark Hero to do it.

A member of the Evil Rangers met in the PSP remake's "Axel Mode", she joins Axel after he beats up the Evil Rangers. She's aware he's a total idiot, but it's why she loves him.

* [[AscendedFanboy Ascended Fangirl]]: Is constantly fawning over Axel and punctuating her sentences with heart icons to show her adoration.
* CatGirl: A monster in a cat costume, but the effect is the same.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: She attacks by whacking enemies in the head with a fish.
* MsExposition: Explains Magichange to Axel.
* PinkMeansFeminine: The only female Evil Ranger.
* PowerFist: Her Magichange turns her into one.
* StealthInsult: She disguises her insults at Axel's behavior as compliments.
* VerbalTic: She meows often when ending sentences.

A rising film star Axel meets on the set of a movie he's in, she relinquishes her role to him because she's a fangirl and has always wanted to be in a movie with him. She's a Level 125 Great Wyrm, one of the most powerful monster classes in the game. Give her a good weapon and watch her deal thousands of points of damage with one attack.

* AnAxeToGrind: Her Magichange is to turn into an axe.
* [[AscendedFanboy Ascended Fangirl]]: Unlike Evil Pink, she genuinely adores Axel and looks up to him.
* TheBigGuy: She doesn't do much in battle aside from dish out high amounts of damage. But she's good at it.
* ClosetGeek: Before she got recruited, the Actress mentioned an accurate fact about Axel, but she brushes that off. That let the player know she was, in fact, a fan of Axel, even if she didn't show this before.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Joins Axel after losing to him in battle.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: She's never given a name, she's just "Actress".
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: She's a Great Wyrm palette swap with a custom blue body with white smoke. Notably, her introduction in Axel Mode brings back the Great Wyrm after the original release left it out.
* PlayingWithFire: Her abilities are all Fire-based.
* SamusIsAGirl: Axel is surprised to learn the giant blue fire-dragon he just beat up was a woman, and the lead actress no less.

[[folder:Main Hero B]]
A masochistic angel met in Axel Mode, Axel inadvertently saves him from being eaten by demons, much to his disappointment. He then joins Axel's party.

* CombatSadomasochist: Enjoys pain and violence to an exaggerated degree.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Yes, he is a male. He has a very feminine appearance and, in the dub, a very effeminate voice, but gender-specific stat bonuses and his ''Disgaea 4'' cameo confirm he's a male.
* JackOfAllStats: All-around average weapon mastery ranging from D to B, and 100% aptitude in most stats with 120s and 130s in spellcasting stats. And as an Angel, he learns a combination of healing and offensive spells.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: For one, this one is a total masochist who gets excited at the prospect of being physically harmed. Gameplay-wise he introduces the Angel class in the PSP remake.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Apparently this is a universal trait of angels, but Main Hero B takes it to the point of volunteering to be dismembered and eaten at a demon banquet. His class is even given as "Angel Masochist".
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Has pastel lavender hair.

[[folder:The Masked Servants of Zenon]]

Though Zenon is reclusive and does not even meet with his minions, he does have two trusted servants: The masked generals Shura and Selion. Both are quite powerful and have apparently served him loyally for years, though they are unemotional and muted. He tasks them with finding Rozalin and bringing her back, but when Selion finds Adell's group, she has an attack of sympathy and hides the information from her master. Throughout the story, they quietly do their best to help Adell's group, though they do not know why and cannot oppose Zenon directly

* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:They do not serve Zenon by choice and have committed many crimes in his name.]]
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: When seeing how nice they are, Adell is puzzled. In-story, they speculate that perhaps they're altered humans with some of their conscience left. [[spoiler:In reality, they're just refugee demons who ended masquerading as normal people in order to live peacefully in Veldime before Zenon attacked.]]
* CoDragons: The pair are Zenon's most powerful servants and the only two seen to interact with him directly.
* EnigmaticMinion: It's not quite clear why they work for Zenon for quite some time, leaving it mysterious as to why Selion keeps helping Adell out. [[spoiler:They've been enslaved and their memories wiped, but Selion can still sort of tell who Adell is.]]
* FightingFromTheInside: [[spoiler:Some of the encounters with their son caused them to have fleeting impressions of their memories, which led to them occasionally aiding Adell on his mission.]]
* GenerationXerox: [[spoiler:The manga shows that Shura prior to his enslavement looked a lot like Adell, but with messier hair and a cigarette in his mouth.]]
* ICannotSelfTerminate: The dialogue before the fight reveals to the protagonist's group that [[spoiler:they were demon refugees who tried to stop Zenon and failed, losing their free will in the process]]. They beg Adell to [[spoiler:"release us from these husks!"]]
* IDieFree: [[spoiler: They express relief once Adell gave them a mercy kill.]]
* LukeIAmYourFather: After the boss fight with them, [[spoiler:Adell's adoptive father finally remembers what happened to Adell's parents and who they were, but of course Adell just gave them a MercyKill. He doesn't know who they were, but his adoptive parents say they have something to tell him after he gets home.]]
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: [[spoiler:They really are demons, but they're perfectly decent people who just wanted to live in peace as humans.]]

!'''WARNING''' -- the following character profile is full of unmarked spoilers for the end of the game.

[[folder:Spoiler Character]]

!!True Zenon
!!! Voiced by: Creator/YukariTamura (JP), Creator/WendeeLee (EN)

After the tournament, questions begin to arise about whether the man the group have been searching for and just confronted is actually the true Zenon, especially after he was easily defeated by Etna and treats Rozalin quite callously. It turns out he isn't Zenon after all. The ''real'' Zenon, after defeating all those Overlords and Demon Lords fifteen years ago, realized she had become too monstrous and powerful. Thus she reincarnated herself as Rozalin, sealing her true power and her memories. The fake Zenon raised Rozalin as his daughter in an act of petty vengeance and assumed Zenon's identity, keeping her isolated from the outside world to control her and keep the True Zenon from returning. Unfortunately, when Laharl shatters the magic seal Rozalin produces to prove her lineage to Zenon, he unleashes True Zenon once again.

* AntiVillain: Zenon is extremely powerful and dangerous to everyone, but it's actually a fairly sympathetic portrayal: First, she's becoming something fundamentally inhuman. Second, it's implied that everyone she has known has betrayed her over the course of her long, long life.
* AxCrazy: Zenon is one of the most powerful beings in the entire Disgaea series and has started to become something other than a demon. Apart from this, Zenon is also [[TheParanoiac incredibly paranoid]].
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Zenon's eyes are completely black apart from the red irises.
* CatchPhrase: Most of what Zenon says is variations on "Are you my enemy" or the more undirected "I am a being of solitude."
* CreepyMonotone: Zenon speaks with very little emotion.
* CurbStompBattle: Zenon absolutely flattens Laharl at the tower and later the fake Zenon. The former is especially impressive given that Laharl has canonically beaten Baal before, but simply had to run here before she could outright kill him.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her reputation attracted countless challengers, and even her own vassals turned on her. The never ending conflict she was involved in her made her completely paranoid and see every living being around her as enemy, and she went as to reincarnate into a new life to escape all the fighting.
* {{Deconstruction}}: Demons fighting and backstabbing each other to become the Overlord is generally used for comedy, but Zenon shows just how psychologically damaging and horrible such a world can be. She also deconstructs the idea of reincarnating -- the player just does it to get stronger units by mixing and matching character classes. Zenon did it to contain her own power because she was ''too'' strong already.
* EldritchAbomination: After fighting off challengers for eons, Zenon eventually grew too powerful and started to become something much worse than a demon. Reincarnation and a power seal offered a way out until Laharl woke her up again. And that's not even getting to the amount of Overlords and Demon Lords she murdered back in her day.
* HadesShaded: Zenon's skin is a few shades darker than Rozalin's as well as darkening all over in general.
* ImAHumanitarian: In the worst ending, Zenon devours Taro and Hanako.
* KnightOfCerebus: While wholly evil, the fake Zenon is also sorta comical. The real one? She will simply kill anyone she sees and maybe eat you if she feels like it. Any time she appears, shit is either about to get real or already has.
* LoveRedeems: In the good/canon ending, Adell either suppresses the Zenon personality or actually gains her trust, reverting her to Rozalin. How? With a kiss, of course.
* TheOlderImmortal: Most of the demons seen are on the order of a few thousand years old, with Seraph Lamington being about ten thousand years old. Zenon? Zenon is stated to be on a ''million'' year reign of terror.
* OmnicidalManiac: Zenon has killed a thousand Overlords and is hostile to anyone in their presence. Not exactly by choice, however. Zenon slowly started becoming something worse than a demon and even the sane side of her personality was incredibly paranoid, fearing betrayal from anyone who got close to her.
* TheParanoiac: Having betrayed multiple times in the past on top of the challengers to her title, she thinks that everyone around her is out to get her.
* ThePerilsOfBeingTheBest: Was considered the most powerful overlord in the universe. Rather than frightening away challengers, it brought countless more. Even worse, she states that all of her followers and allies all betrayed her as well for the same reason.
* PromotedToPlayable: Acts as Rozalin's [[LimitBreak Overload]] in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 5}}'' once she's obtained from DLC.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Tired of fighting and fearing what she was becoming, Zenon fled to a backwater world and reincarnated into an obscure demon clan, hoping to escape fighting. Unfortunately, the fake Zenon tracked her down.
* SamusIsAGirl: Nobody knows much of anything about Zenon, since anyone who meets him tends to quickly die, but 'he' is actually inaccurate. Zenon is female.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: The true Zenon doesn't care about Veldime except in that it was a quiet world to get lost in and start over. However, the fake tracked her down and set up camp there.
* WalkingSpoiler: Once you know that the Zenon above is a fake and there's a real one out there somewhere, you know the story isn't as simple as it looks. That the real Zenon is Rozalin's SuperpoweredEvilSide is just another layer under it.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: If Zenon's dialogue is anything to go by, she has been betrayed by essentially everyone. Servants, friends, everyone. She doesn't trust ''anyone'' anymore.
