caption-width-right:250:

-->"I so envied the weak. The weak can always find others to be around. I want to be weak. And if that's impossible, I at least want to find companions who are as strong as I."

The First Espada, a lazy Arrancar who prefers to avoid fighting altogether and largely lacks malicious intent. Despite his apathy and laziness, he is highly analytical and a flexible fighter to boot. His Fraccion is the young Lilynette Gingerbuck. Defined with the aspect of 'Loneliness', Starrk was a Hollow who grew too powerful and envied the weak because they can pack together, and joined Aizen for the sole purpose of having friends and comrades. His number tattoo is on the back of his left hand and his Hollow hole is in his sternum.

His Zanpakutou is Los Lobos, which transforms him into a traditional Wild West gunslinger with overwhelming offensive abilities. His guns allow him to fire Cero at a very rapid rate and he can use his soul-splitting abilities to create multiple weaponised spirit wolves.

-->Voiced by: Creator/RikiyaKoyama (JP), Creator/KeithSilverstein (EN), Arturo Mercado Jr. (Latin-American Spanish)
* AbnormalAmmo: Aside from Ceros, he can also release exploding spirit wolves made out of pieces of his soul.
* ActionBomb: His spirit wolves explode with the force of a small nuke once they latch onto a target, as Love and Rose found out the hard way. The dub even calls them "wolf-shaped warheads".
* AdaptationDyeJob: His hair is jet black in the manga, brown in the anime.
* AffablyEvil: As a result of his laziness and apathy, Starrk isn't malicious or aggressive, only taking action when prompted by Lilynette. This causes Kyoraku to lament that they're enemies.
* AlasPoorVillain: While villain may be stretching it, his death at Kyoraku's hands via Iro Oni was easily the most heartwrenching of any of the Espada. Kyoraku himself even dislikes having to kill him off.
* AnimalMotifs: His resurrección is related to wolves. More specifically the "lone wolf", reflecting on his aspect. His name and western cowboy-like outfit relate to coyotes.
* AntiVillain: "Couldn't we just pretend to fight?" He means it, too, and lets some opponents know that if they leave he's prepared to let them get away.
%% * ApologeticAttacker: Apologizes several times before doing something to oppose the protagonists.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: Averted; when Aizen is trapped by Yamamoto, he is quite happy to let Baraggan take command, much to Lilynette's frustration.
%% * AwesomeMcCoolname: He sounds like he should be a villain in some western.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Figured out how Shunsui's and Ukitake's Shikai abilities work after only a few attacks.
* AvengingTheVillain: In a manner of speaking by Starrk, who was rather depressed that he was the only one affected by Baraggan's death.
-->Starrk: Lord Aizen, you couldn't even spare a word for Number Two?
* BadassBandolier: As part of the lone-wolf gunslinger theme of his Resurrección, he gains a pair of black bandoleers that connect his back to his forearms. They don't hold bullets, however - they let him summon an army of spectral wolves that explode when they latch onto an opponent, and a pair of energy swords if he needs them.
%% * BadassBeard: Sports a tiny goatee. It isn't much, but it still nicely accents the whole WildWest theme.
* BadassLongcoat: He gains a long white coat lined with grey fur in his released state.
* BatmanGambit: The anime version of the fight invokes a FakeWeakness in his guns by having him holstering his right gun every time he fired in an attempt to fool Kyoraku into thinking he was recharging and luring him close on the assumption his opponent would be studying the pattern of attacks to find a weakness; he was right.
%% * BattleAura: As a Hollow, it was powerful enough to kill all the other Hollows around him.
* BeamSpam: His Cero Metralleta technique forms a dozen or so energy spheres, each of which acts like a machine gun that fires Ceros at rapid rates of fire. Kyoraku calls him out on how "unfair" this technique is.
* BrilliantButLazy: He's Espada # 1, is brilliant at analyzing a fighting situation despite having little information to use, but tends to sleep more than do a thing and requires Lilynette to kick him into gear.
* BystanderSyndrome: Lilynette calls him out for sleeping when Aaroniero is killed, to which he asks what she wants him to do about it.
* CombatPragmatist: He doesn't hesitate to shoot Kyoraku in the back at point blank range while the captain was distracted by Wonderweiss.
* CurbStompBattle: Proving what it takes to be Primera Espada, he easily defeats Rose and Love, two Captain-level opponents with the added power of Hollow masks, at the same time.
* CursedWithAwesome: The same power than made him the Primera Espada is also what caused him centuries of loneliness and depression. He was so powerful no other hollow could approach him without dying instantly because of his spiritual pressure.
* DualWielding: Once he activates his Resurreccion, he wields a pair of pistols that fire Ceros, and when he takes it even further, he trades those out for a pair of blue laser blades similar to his original katana.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: "Forgive me, but I abhor such tactics."
* EvilCounterpart: To Kyoraku, though he's a little lacking in the 'evil' department. Both are BrilliantButLazy warriors capable of incredible feats but reluctant to do much and have MUCH younger assistants that freely whack them despite being nowhere near as powerful as they are, and even have similar application of speed and fighting style. They differ largely in that Kyoraku is more carefree and easygoing while Starrk is more lazy and apathetic. Also Starrk is a much more straightforward fighter, while Kyoraku defies his samurai motif as a CombatPragmatist.
%% * EvilGenius: "Evil" is a bit strong - he's apathetic at worst and a bad guy by luck if anything, but regardless fills the shoes of a genius via AwesomenessByAnalysis.
* EyepatchOfPower: His release covers his left eye with an eyepatch that looks like it's made of bone with a Hollow hole in it.
* FlashStep: Starrk is so fast that he's able to grab Orihime when she's within feet of both Ichigo and Kenpachi and whisk her away before either of them have even finished drawing their swords.
* FlunkyBoss: Sorta. He can split his soul into at least a hundred exploding wolf-like creatures.
* FriendlessBackground: Starrk is defined by his loneliness and it is in fact his Aspect of Death. He was so powerful that his mere presence would kill any beings he came across until Aizen helped him put his power under control.
* FusionDance: Lilynette is not his Fraccion, she's his zanpakuto. Once they enter their Resurreccion state, they rejoin into one being with Lilynette becoming his twin guns.
%% * GangstaStyle: Does this at one point in the anime.
* GunFu: He rapidly fires away from a stationary position, elegantly sheathing and then firing with his more powerful gun.
* GunsAkimbo: He wields two guns during his release. One fires rapidly but has minimal power and the other fires slow but powerful projectiles.
* TheGunslinger: He uses a pair of cero firing guns in his released state, which turns him into an unholy combination of the vaporizer, the woo, and the quick draw.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: A gambit he pulls in the anime where he fires a powerful cero from his right pistol and then holsters it, creating the illusion that while the right gun is more powerful, it requires recharge between firing. When Kyoraku tries to take advantage of this apparent weakness, Starrk just flips the gun forward and shoots him in the face.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Does not care about his power at all, since it caused his loneliness in the first place. He even admits he envies those who are weak.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: He's lonely to the point where he'd even consider Baraggan a friend. The entire reason he joined Aizen's army in the first place was because he desperately wanted to have people in his life that he could be close to.
* LaserBlade: He can summon a pair of glowing swords made of his reiatsu.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: He has the power to split his soul into other beings, including creating an entire pack of wolves to function as his army. Starrk and Lilynette don't know which of them was the original or whether identifying an original even matters. They were originally one being who created the other as a companion to escape their desperate loneliness.
* LonelyAtTheTop: More or less the basis of his character. From the beginning he wanted to have friends, which was impossible for him as he was so unbelievably strong as a Vasto Lorde that the spirit energy leaking from him was enough to kill any weaker hollow who happened to be near him.
-->"I was jealous of the weak ones. The weak are allowed to congregate. I want to be weak. If that's impossible... at least give me comrades as strong as I am."
* LonelyTogether: Which one of Starrk and Lilynette came first is unknown by either. To escape their desperate loneliness, the original split the other from their soul to create companionship.
%% * MadnessMantra: "I am not alone. I am not alone. I am not alone."
* MartialPacifist: Doesn't seem to care much for combat, being extremely reluctant to fight Kyoraku seriously. He dislikes the idea of taking revenge altogether unless it's for a friend.
* MrFanservice: Not to Ulquiorra or Grimmjow's extent, but he is pretty damn handsome, especially with his BadassLongcoat and cowboy theme.
* NonIndicativeName: Despite his name being Coyote Starrk, his AnimalMotif is the wolf. His background is that of a lone wolf who desperately wants to be part of the pack and his power, Los Lobos ("The Wolves"), allows him to split his souls into both companions and an entire pack of soul wolf weapons.
* NonMaliciousMonster: He's a Hollow, but he's not evil, just extremely lonely and viewing the other Espada as his TrueCompanions.
* NotSoDifferent: Much of his behavior and tactics are comparable to Kyoraku's, but this is ultimately subverted and lampshaded when it turns out his assumptions on this basis - Kyoraku's 'desperate' attacks - turn out to be misguided. Kyoraku is intentionally unpredictable, and tells Starrk he shouldn't be so quick to think they're the same kind of people.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: When he finally realises how serious Aizen is, he stops playing around in battle. He takes out Kyouraku with a shot to the back.
* PerpetualFrowner: Starrk's expression rarely changes from a small melancholy frown.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He can fire 1,000 cero at once, and those dozens of soul-wolves each have the fire-power of a small nuke. It's good thing that he doesn't care for fighting.
* PowerIncontinence: As a Vasto Lorde, he was so powerful that his uncontrollable reiatsu killed everything around him until he met Aizen.
* PunchClockVillain: Starrk opposes Soul Society purely out of gratitude to Aizen for providing him with comrades who won't die from his presence. He even suggests to Shinsui that they just pretend to fight, and when his fighting is half-hearted when he doesn't feel pressured by his allegiance, attempting to give Rose and Love the opportunity to run.
* SavageWolves: He can summon an army of vicious wolves made of his reiatsu which explode in a spectacular fashion when they sink their teeth into an enemy.
%% * SpellMyNameWithAnS: For a 'Starrk', not 'Stark'.
* TokenGoodTeammate: The most villainous thing about Starrk is his choice to fight for Aizen. Everything else about him, ranging from his actions and even his personality don't match up to his teammates aside from Harribel. Despite this, Shunsui makes it clear that since it is a war, he wouldn't hold back in punches despite how nice of a guy Starrk may be.
* TorsoWithAView: His hollow hole is located in his sternum.
* UndyingLoyalty: As he dies, Starrk notes he didn't get to exactly thank Aizen fully, making him one of the few Espada loyal to him outright. It's justified because Aizen gave him exactly what he wanted; companions as strong as himself.
* VillainousBSOD
** A minor one. Despite saying he's not the kind of guy to get revenge for his fallen comrades, Love notes that his performance in their fight gets considerably worse after Baraggan's death. It takes being scolded by Lilynette for him to go on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge instead.
** In the anime, he appears to completely lose the will to fight after Lilynette's death.
* WalkingWasteland: Before splitting into Starrk and Lilynette, as a Vasto Lorde he was so overwhelmingly powerful that the reiatsu leaking from him alone was enough to kill any Hollow that came near him. When Aizen first met him, he was surrounded by mountains of dead Hollows.
%% * WaveMotionGun: His guns fire massive ceros. Massive, multiple ceros.
* WillfullyWeak: He had always desired to be weaker so his reiatsu would stop killing any Hollows who approached him (and if that wasn't an option, to at least have comrades strong enough to handle it). In battle, Stark isn't weak by any means, but his heart's generally not into fighting.

!!!Lilynette Gingerbuck

-->"Why do you think that Aizen made you number one?! Because he believes in your power, right!? If you don't want to lose any of your comrades, then the only thing to do is fight!"

Lilynette is Starrk's sole fraccion and is about as dangerous as you'd expect from someone that looks as young as she does. Nevertheless, she shares a very close relationship with Starrk despite her irritability. In truth she and Starrk are two parts of the same hollow split into two.

--> Voiced by: Creator/KiyomiAsai (JP), Creator/KateHiggins (EN), Analiz Sánchez (Latin-American Spanish)
* AbsoluteCleavage: Not that she has any cleavage, but her uniform still exposes a lot of her chest.
* BareYourMidriff: Her outfit shows off her stomach.
%% * CuteMonsterGirl: More cute than monsterous, though.
* FusionDance: She's Starrk's zanpakuto, not his Fraccion meaning when they merge she becomes Espada #1 as well.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Like Starrk, she was never able to make friends or anyone due to the immense power the pair possessed.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Watching her try and fail to keep her dignity as a fighter while Ukitake toys with her, to the point she breaks down crying, makes her an odd case of an allegedly villainous character chalking up Woobie points.
* IneffectualDeathThreats: It's hard to take her cries of "I'll kill you!" seriously when she's dirty and crying.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Subverted. She's a child who's friends with a much older Starrk, though Lilynette makes a point that Arrancar don't age.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: She's not truly Starrk's fraccion, they're two fragments of the same Hollow, so she is also the Espada #1.
%% * LittleMissBadass: Tries to be one, bless her, at the very least, but utterly fails at it... until she turns into those exploding reishi wolves, that is.
* LonelyTogether: She was actually part of Starrk originally, and they're largely the same person, including their lack of a capacity to survive without companionship.
%% * PluckyGirl: Doesn't give up even when Ukitake is clearly just messing with her to avoid killing her.
* PunchClockVillain: Like Starrk, she doesn't really have much in the way of actual villainous traits. She's short tempered at worst, but for the most part just hangs out with these guys because she's lonely and there's no one else the pair can really interact with.
* SinisterScimitar: Can pull one out of her mask's broken left horn to fight. Not fight well, but fight. Ukitake quickly takes it away from her as if she's a child playing with scissors, and it disintegrates as she enters Ressureccion with Starrk.
* Stripperiffic: She wears a tiny vest, long boots and gloves, and a pair of really short undergarments, all of which are white-colored with black outlines. A light BREEZE should result in a wardrobe malfunction, really.
* TakingTheBullet: In the anime, she dies intercepting a wind attack from Kyoraku that was meant for Starrk.
* TorsoWithAView: Her hollow hole is located on her solar plexus.
%% * YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Her hair is green.

caption-width-right:250:

-->"Shinigami, humans, Hollows, Arrancar, all of their differences and strife, will, freedom, beasts, plants, the moon and stars and sun - all of it is meaningless! There is but one absolute in this world, and that is my power!"

The Second Espada, the self-proclaimed God of Hueco Mundo. Defines the death aspect of 'Aging'. Baraggan, by all rights, lived up to his namesake, until Aizen came and screwed him over, forcing him to his servitude, which he grudgingly accepted. Throughout his life, he has one wish: to exact vengeance and kill Aizen. As his Zanpakuto's name implies, he's extremely arrogant. The location of his number tattoo is unknown and his Hollow hole is in his sternum.

His zanpakutou is an enormous battle-axe named Arrogante which allows him to slow time and age his opponent through physical contact, leaving their bones brittle. He can release its true form to become a skeleton clad in purple furs and garbs that is able to launch Respira, a black wave of rapid ageing that decays everything it touches in a matter of seconds.

-->Voiced by: Creator/ShozoIizuka (JP), Creator/SteveKramer (EN, Hueco Mundo Arc), Creator/MichaelMcConnohie (EN, Fake Karakura Arc onward), Salvador Reyes (Latin-American Spanish)
* AGodAmI: He genuinely thinks of himself as a god who sits far above everyone else and refers to himself as the "God of Hueco Mundo" multiple times during his fights against Sui-Feng and Hachigen, even though he's just an arrancar like the other Espada.
* AnAxeToGrind: His zanpakutō takes the form of a huge double-bearded axe. In his Resurrección form, he can summon a similar jet black axe called "Gran Caida", which he was shown to have before he ever became an Arrancar.
* AntagonistAbilities: Barragan's Respira makes him an almost untouchable opponent. In his unreleased state, he can slow down any attack coming at him so he can easily avoid it. Any tactics and techniques are impossible against him because simply getting near him will age either the technique or the opponent to death. This even extends to the ground he's walking on and also allowed him to survive a FantasticNuke to the face. If his Respira does touch an opponent, they have to sever the part of the body that's rotting to avoid dying.
* BadBoss: Just before Aizen showed up to kick him off his throne, he was considering dividing his army in half and having the two sides fight to the death just to pass the time.
* BadassBoast: "I am king. I am God. I will never die." Becomes a MadnessMantra during his VillainousBreakdown.
* BadassLongrobe: His Resurreccion cloaks him in a dark purple, furry cloak, a noticeable departure from all the white seen in Las Noches' army.
* BreathWeapon: In his released state he can exhale a black miasma called "Respira", the "Breath of Death", which rots whatever it comes into contact with.
%% * CatchPhrase: "How Comical". Baraggan seems to have a fairly morbid sense of humor, although he never exactly cracks jokes.
* CoolCrown: He has a large, impressive spiked crown in release. When in his unreleased state, the remains of his Hollow mask merely look like a crown.
* DemBones: In his original Hollow form he resembled a human skeleton clad in a crown and black robes, and his Resurrección returns him to that state by rotting away his flesh,
* EvilGloating: For the most part, it's completely justified, but it's also just about all that stops him from managing to do a lot more horrific damage before he went down.
* TheFatalist: As the Espada of Age, also directly connected to his BattleAura, Baraggan brags that death by aging is something that the mind cannot fathom, except that it's inevitable even for Soul Reapers, lecturing that nothing can exist forever; even the word "forever" is meaningless, since it was born from the fear of death.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: After all the trouble Sui-Feng and Hachi went through, after surviving two Bankai nukes and proving immune to kido, after taking arms off of both his opponents, he is finally taken down when Hachi teleports his own decaying arm into Baraggan's stomach, disintegrating Baraggan into nothingness.
* HumiliationConga: As King of Las Noches, Baraggan was minding his own business when Aizen and his CoDragons came out of nowhere, bluntly stated that he wasn't good enough for what he was best at, wiped out Baraggan's entire army, forced him to serve the ones that defeated him and got labeled with the rank of "2nd" to further spite him. His palace turned into Aizen's own headquarters.
* IgnorantOfHisOwnIgnorance: Before Aizen, Gin, and Tosen arrived and usurped his throne, he believed that he had already conquered everything, and was incredulous when Aizen told him there are other worlds besides Hueco Mundo.
* ImplacableMan: Sui-Feng is aghast at the level of punishment this guy shrugs off, even wondering during the third or fourth time he's taken the party's best shot and come back for more if he's immortal.
* InstantDeathRadius: Baraggan's power over time enables him to instantly age whatever he or his Respira touches to dust, and unless the affected body part is amputated the rot will spread to the entire body.
%% * JustToyingWithThem: This is one of the reasons why he gets killed. It's what he does to Suì-Fēng, Ōmaeda, and later, Hachi.
%% * LargeHam: Especially during his VillainousBreakdown. Even otherwise, he chews the scenery before ridding the remains with a Respira.
* TheLawOfDiminishingDefensiveEffort: When Sui-Feng first uses her Bankai, Baraggan stares in half-interest as the missile flies toward him, and emerges from the explosion unscathed. After determining that he aged the missile to explode before it hit him and trapping him so he can't do that again, he panics as Sui-Feng readies another missile and ends up losing part of his face from this second attack.
* LogicalWeakness: Barragan was able to rule Hueco Mundo for an untold length of time due to his aging power being absolute. Unlike other powers, everyone is affected by his power, because nothing lasts forever. Hachigen defeats Barragan by concluding that if this is true, Barragan himself is no exception and must have some sort of trick that protects him. He was absolutely right.
* OhCrap: When Sui-Feng shoots him directly in the face with her Bankai, he's horrified to discover he can neither block nor avoid it. Later, Hacchi evokes another such expression from him when he figures out Barragan's secret. Barragan is vulnerable to his own power and Hacchi figures out how to turn it against him.
* RapidAging: His power to manipulate time enables him to accelerate the aging of whoever he or his abilities touch. The results of this enables him to rot his enemies down to the bone, and even defend himself from oncoming attacks.
* RedHerring: The way he takes charge, and the fact that he's the oldest looking Espada led some people to believe he was Espada #1. Even Kyoraku had the same thoughts.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Hacchi realises that if Barragan is telling the truth about his power being absolute, then Barragan himself is vulnerable to his own power and therefore needs a second power to protect himself from his primary ability, and it only works on the surface of his body, not inside.
* SevenDeadlySins: Kubo Tite revealed in the Masked interview that some of the Espada were modeled after the Seven Deadly Sins. His god complex coupled with his Resurrección, Arrogante (Spanish for arrogant), make him a dead ringer for pride.
* TheStarscream: He was the king of Hueco Mundo by virtue of being the most powerful person around... until Aizen showed up. After being forcibly recruited, he was waiting for his chance to take his throne back.
* SuperpowerLottery: His basic power is unstoppable, unblockable, works as both offense and defense and unless treated with some drastic measures, is a surefire one hit kill. Used right, it could possibly be more effective than even Kyoka Suigetsu.
* TimeMaster: His abilities stem around manipulating the flow of time to slow down his enemies and make them age and crumble into dust.
* TorsoWithAView: His Hollow Hole is in the center of his chest, although it's covered by his robes and not ususally visible.
* VictoryIsBoring: In his backstory, Baraggan was extremely bored with his complete rule over Hueco Mundo because he had nothing to conquer with his vast powers and army.
%% * VillainBall: There's a reason his Zanpakuto is named "Arrogante": He's too busy gloating to get anything done like he should.
* VillainousBreakdown: When Sui-Feng and Hachi manage to injure him, he completely loses his shit.
-->Baraggan: "HAHAHAHAHA! Tiny, tiny! Tinytinytinytiny! Soul Reapers and humans and hollows and arrancars all have their own differences and quarrels! They have will and freedom and animals and plants and the moon and the stars and the sun and every little thing! But only my power is absolute! Everything else is tiny and insignificant! Your proper place is under my supreme rule! Equality is not born from rivalry! Look into my eyes, for you are no different than insects to me!(...) I AM THE GREAT EMPEROR! AGodAmI THE GOD OF HUECO MUNDO! BARAGGAN LUISENBAIRN!!!"
* WalkingWasteland: His special ability is to rot and age everything into dust. Plants, buildings, people, attacks, everything.
* WeHaveReserves: He sent his Fraccion into battle fully expecting them to win, and he was noticeably enraged when they were killed, but he also didn't lift a finger to help them when they started losing, and gave the impression that he was only angry because his servants being defeated made him look bad. Otherwise, he didn't care. In his backstory, as he was planning to have his loyal army fight each other to the death before Aizen dropped in. Mainly because he was bored.
* WhenEldersAttack: He looks ancient and even his powers revolve around Old Age, as it works on the principle of senescence. He's also just as muscular as Captain Commander Yamamoto.

caption-width-right:250:

-->"No world is without sacrifices. But if we produce casualties, we would also sustain casualties of our own."

The Third Espada, a DarkActionGirl who led an all-female Fraccion squad. Harribel shows actually more compassion compared to the rest of the Arrancars towards her own Fraccion, but she still fulfills her DarkActionGirl credentials. She defines the death aspect of 'Sacrifice'. Her number-tattoo is located on the left side of her right breast, and her Hollow hole is in her womb.

Her Zanpakuto, Tiburon, gives her a shark motif and control of water-based abilities. In her normal form, the blade is hollow and can be filled with spiritual power to increase its strength.

-->Voiced by: Creator/MegumiOgata (JP), Creator/LauraBailey (EN), Nalleli Solís (Latin-American Spanish)
* AMotherToHerMen: Unlike the Espada not named Starrk, she actually cares a great deal for the safety of her Fraccion. The anime takes it a step further by hosting a WholeEpisodeFlashback detailing her past, where she actually recruited Apacci, Sung-Sun and Mila to help form a stable group to keep male Hollows from eating them. Given how her Hollow hole is located in her womb, symbolizing how she's effectively a ParentalSubstitute for her girls.
* AbsoluteCleavage: When her top is unzipped and in her Resurreccion form her breasts are only partially covered by her mask fragments. The anime extends the fragments to cover the undersides of her breasts as well.
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime dedicated a handful of filler episodes to showing her backstory as a pacifist Vasto Lorde opposed to Barrigan's reign, protecting a trio of female Adjuchas - who later became her Fraccion - from the predations of other Menos.
* AllThereInTheManual: A novel-esque story titled "Nestle To Night" (found in the Unmasked databook) reveals that Harribel and her Fraccion survived the entire Fake Karakura ordeal. Happens again regarding her fate after the manga, in Can't Fear Your Own World" which reveals that she was rescued from the Wahrwelt by Neliel at some point and returned to Hueco Mundo.
* AmazonBrigade: Heads up one of these with her all-female fraccion. Anime filler shows that they deliberately gathered up to avoid predation from male Hollows, as female Hollows are generally considered easy targets.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: She has dark skin (noticeably more so in the manga than the anime), but as she has the same Spanish-flavored name as all arrancar, it's unclear what her ethnicity is supposed to be, if she even has one.
* AnimalMotifs: Her resurreccion is related to sharks. In anime-only flashback, her Vasto Lorde form is a humanoid Hollow with shark-themed armor.
* AntiVillain: Conducts herself in a much more restrained and honorable manner than her compatriots, although messing with her friends brings down her wrath. Her anger usually takes the form of TranquilFury but the only time she drops her air of quiet dignity is when Aizen betrays everyone. Aizen is irritated to discover he has to use his sword on her twice before she can be properly defeated.
* BadassInDistress: Sometime before the start of the Quincy's invasion of Soul Society, she was captured by the Vandenreich to destabilize Hueco Mundo. She's shown defeated and chained up in Yhwach's stronghold.
* BFS: Unusual for most females in Bleach, she wields a massive broad sword in resureccion that resembles a shark's tooth.
%% * BishonenLine: Her Ressurrecion makes her lose her mouth and look normal.
* BoobsOfSteel: She's the strongest female arrancar who wields a BFS in her released state, and has a rather massive bust.
%% * ButNotTooBlack: In the anime adaptation her skin appears to be somewhat lighter than in the manga.
* ButterFace: Subversion. Her body is curvaceous, but when she unzips her jacket, the lower half of her face is a skeletal jaw, in keeping with her shark theme. Once she enters resurrecion, however, her face becomes as gorgeous as the rest of her body.
* ContraltoOfDanger: She is the only female among the current Espada, and holds the absolute deepest voice of all females in the series. It helps that her unreleased state leaves her with mask fragments muffling her mouth.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: In her Resurrección she trades her hakama for a bone-like micro skirt that doesn't even make it halfway to her knees.
* DarkActionGirl: She's the most powerful female arrancar in Aizen's army and is fully capable of overwhelming a captain-class shinigami like Hitsugaya.
* DarkSkinnedBlond: She has blonde hair and dark skin, though she's given lighter, tan-ish skin in the anime, for some reason.
* DeclarationOfProtection: In the wild, Harribel lived as close as she could to a life of non-violence and starvation to defy the SocialDarwinist laws of Hueco Mundo. Since then, she has been motivated to fight by a desire to keep her few friends from dying.
* DoesNotLikeMen: She knows that male Hollows will invariably prey upon females, especially since she lives in such a brutal world that the likes of Baraggan rise to the top. However, she does get along fine with the likes of Starrk, meaning she's still a reasonable enough person.
* EveryoneHasStandards: The novel "Don't Fear Your Own World" has her see Yhwach's state as the new Soul King. Seeing what they've done made her understand why Aizen wants to destroy it so bad.
* EverythingsEvenWorseWithSharks: Her sword's name is the Spanish word for shark and her release adds a shark motif to her appearance. She even refers to herself as the shark when one-shotting Hitsugaya.
%% * EvilVirtues: Most notably, honor, loyalty, responsibility and selflessness.
* GoingCommando: In the manga, we get a shot of her skirt going up, and there's nothing covering what's underneath. Actually changed in Bleach: Soul Resurrección, to black panties under her skirt.
* HighCollarOfDoom: Presumably to cover her mask remnants, her collar zips all the way up to her nose.
* IntimateMarks: Her Espada Tattoo is on the bottom of her breast, and only visible if she unzips her jacket all the way open to expose AbsoluteCleavage. The databooks also reveal that her Hollow hole is in her womb.
* LadyLegionnaireWear: Her Resurrección gives her a miniskirt made of bones.
* MakingASplash: Her main ability in her released form is being able to create and manipulate water. During her fight with Tōshirō, she uses her power to fire high pressure water projectiles and summon an enormous torrent of water that floods multiple city blocks. She can also manipulate the temperature of water she comes in contact with, as shown when she instantly boils Tōshirō's ice, melting it before it can reach her.
* MamaBear: Harribel's "Aspect of Death" is sacrifice and the meaning behind this lays within her relationship with her three Fraccion. Harribel has no desire to kill, but she knows that she lives in a CrapsackWorld where the strong prey upon the weak. She joined up with Aizen because she did not want her own weakness to lead to the deaths of her TrueCompanions. Nevertheless, each of them would gladly sacrifice their own lives for her sake, and they've even adopted Harribel's theme of sacrifice by removing a part of themselves to create the extremely powerful Ayon.
* MartialPacifist: Like Starrk and her predecessor Nelliel, Harribel hates fighting, but will use her considerable power if it means protecting her TrueCompanions. Her short story in the UNMASKED databook reveals that she joined Aizen's forces specifically so that she could bring an end to the constant fighting of Hueco Mundo.
%% * MartyrWithoutACause: Implied in the anime.
%% * MeaningfulName: "Tier" is German for animal.
* MenUseViolenceWomenUseCommunication: She chose to protect female Hollows from male ones, and created an AmazonBrigade of all women, stating that the males always targeted females. She is also one of the rare Hollow that refuses to gain power by violently consuming other Hollow, regardless of gender.
* MessyHair: Her hair looks like it hasn't seen a brush in years and is in a permanent state of dishevelment.
* MsFanservice: Let's not beat around the bush, Harribel is drop dead gorgeous. On top of having an extremely curvaceous figure, her clothes greatly show off her figure. Her normal outfit doesn't even fully come down over her chest, giving her a gratuitous amount of Underboobs underboob, and her hakama has deep slits on either side of her that show off her hips and thighs. And then there's her released state that takes it even further, giving her an extremely Stripperiffic outfit.
* NonMaliciousMonster: Flashbacks in the anime reveal that even as a normal Hollow, Harribel disliked killing, which stands in stark contrast to the usual bloodthirsty attitude displayed by most Hollows.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: Inverted. In her unreleased state, her hair is mostly shoulder length with three ponytails around her head. She loses the tails in her Resurrección, leaving her with just the shoulder-length hair.
%% * PowerOfFriendship: "I don't want to become stronger through the power I gain by killing and sacrificing another. If I can't win alone, then I'll win as a group."
* RazorWind: Upon entering her Resurrección state, the first swing of her sword has so much power behind it that the sheer pressure of it cuts right through Tōshirō's ice clone from over a dozen feet away.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Though some of the Privaron Espada were female, she is only woman within the Espada during the present story.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Even after the official romanization of her name came out, the English dubbers continue with their original pronounciation of "Halibel". All of the Espada are named after famous architects. She's named after Harry Bell Measures.
* StatuesqueStunner: She's the fourth tallest lady in Bleach at 175cm/5'9" and is very curvy.
* Stripperiffic: In her Resurrección form, her shirt disappears, leaving only two thin bones to cover her breasts. She also gets a DangerouslyShortSkirt, high heeled boots, long gloves, and what looks to be a row of sharks teeth travelling up her navel.
* SwordBeam: Her Ola Azul ability charges reiatsu within the hollow section of her sword and then fires it; La Gota fires a shark-tooth shaped water projectile from the tip of her sword; and she also fires her Cero from her sword in a similar fashion to Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Appears to have rejected the SocialDarwinist law of Hueco Mundo despite being the third or fourth most powerful Hollow known. After becoming a Vasto Lorde, she refuses to eat other Hollows to gain power.
* TokenGoodTeammate: With her distaste of killing and kindness and caring towards her subordinates, Harribel is by far the most morally-centered of the Espada. She also doesn't show any real malice towards the soul reapers at Fake Karakura until Yamamoto roasts her fraccion.
* TorsoWithAView: Unlike most of the other Arrancars, this one is subverted. It's where her womb is supposed to be, but it's either entirely internal or not visible under her clothes (stripperific improbable as that may seem).
%% * TranquilFury: Doesn't show any more emotion than she did before, but becomes much more dangerous and goes to town on Hitsugaya after her Fraccion are defeated.
%% * TrueCompanions: She is very close to her Fracción, and is enraged when she thinks they were killed.
* Underboobs: In the manga the underside of her breasts are exposed, but censored in the anime. Suspiciously enough, however, during a flashback to Wonderweiss' creation at episode 294, her underboobs are rendered fully, without any censorship whatsoever.
* WillfullyWeak: Refusing to eat other Hollows means that she didn't continue to gain power the same way far less moral Hollows like Baraggan did. This combined with her steadfast refusal to kill and her belief in fighting as a group explains quite well why she didn't seem as powerful as the other Vasto Lorde Arrancar. Of course, when she actually puts some effort into fighting, she's a total badass.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Due to the fact that every Espada more powerful than her is dead, she became the ruler of Hueco Mundo by default.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Aizen loses interest in the Espada when he realises that even combined they're still weaker than he is. He cuts down Harribel himself although she's later saved by Orihime, inheriting leadership of Hueco Mundo until being captured by Yhwach.
* YouWillBeSpared: Yhwach intentionally spared her for unknown reasons. She was later brought into the Soul King's Palace after Yhwach transformed it using his power.

--> "Your words are those of a man who knows not true despair. If you know it not, then allow me to teach you. This is the face of true despair."

The Fourth Espada, Ulquiorra is cold, rational, reserved, and absolutely loyal to Aizen, which more or less netted him the position of TheDragon despite not being his most powerful subordinate. However, all traits put him in direct conflict with Grimmjow, to the point where though he acted as Ichigo's main rival, Ulquiorra has far more enmity for the Sixth Espada. He considers Ichigo, and all others either weaker than him or human, little more than "trash". He defines the death aspect of 'Emptiness'. His number tattoo is on the left side of his chest and his Hollow hole is in his sternum - though in his debut it was in the base of his throat.

His zanpakutou, Murcielago, transforms him into a bat-like demon that gives him incomprehensible speed and allows him to create energy javelins. He has a hidden second transformation named Segunda Etapa that transforms him into a demon with vastly enhanced destructive and regenerative abilities.

He received a short comic made by Tite Kubo about his back story in the third data book, Unmasked, which shows his origins.

Tropes associated with Ulquiorra:
* AlasPoorVillain: As he dies, he asks Orihime if she's afraid of him. She says no and he finally starts to understand what being human is.
* AllTheOtherReindeer: In his backstory in Unmasked, Ulquiorra had a white body except for his wings and no mouth, while his brethren were jet black and had mouths.
* AllThereInTheManual: His backstory is not addressed in the manga or anime, but is instead revealed in the Unmasked datebook.
* AndIMustScream: As a Hollow, Ulquiorra was unable to feel, hear, smell, or eat anything. All he could do was see the world, which is why he only trusts what he can see as an Espada.
* AnimalMotifs: "Murcielago", the name of his zanpakuto, means "bat" in Spanish. When he releases the sword, he gains giant bat wings.
* BadassBaritone: Creator/DaisukeNamikawa and Creator/SteveBlumhis voice actor in Shattered Blade give him a calm, yet imposing deep voice. Averted for Creator/TonyOliver, who goes for a more SoftSpokenSadist approach.
* BarehandedBladeBlock: He does this very often thanks to the arrancar standard Iron Skin, which Ulquiorra's is abnormally strong. This extends to deflecting Getsuga Tensho's. It gets to the point that Ichigo notes during a later battle that Ulquiorra drawing his sword doesn't change anything other than make his reach longer.
* BareFistedMonk: He reserves his sword to the most urgent of threats. For everything else, he fights hand-to-hand.
* BeamOWar: Ulquiorra pits his normal Cero against Ichigo's black Getsuga Tensho and overwhelms it, but he's shocked when Hollow Ichigo's Cero Gigante easily overpowers his Segunda Etapa form's Cero Oscuras twice.
%% * BetaBaddie: Hinted. When he goes for the kill, Ulquiorra tends to stab the victim's chest in the same area where his hollow hole is located.
%% * BigOlEyebrows: No, that isn't manliner above his eyes; they're his eyebrows, though in his first appearance he had no eyebrows at all.
* Bishonen: Not as feminine as Szayelaporro, but he is slender and quite youthful-looking. And, needless to say, he has lots of fangirls.
* BladeOnAStick: He makes use of energy javelins after releasing his sword, and has two variants: Luz de la Luna and the vastly more powerful but unwieldy Lanza del Relámpago.
* BreakThemByTalking: He's very good at getting under his victim's skin. When Ichigo felt Rukia's reiatsu vanish after she collapsed from her fight with Aaroniero, he initially tried to ignore Ulquiorra, until Ulquiorra reveals that he's the one who forced Orihime to come to Hueco Munco. In a rage, Ichigo attacks, which is exactly what Ulquiorra wanted him to do.
* BrutalHonesty: Ulquiorra has little to no grasp of emotions and thus has no tact, stating his opinions bluntly and often harshly.
* CatchPhrase: Has a habit of saying or a variation of "I see" when finding new information. Then again, he once boasted that he could see everything, unless it didn't exist.
* CharacterTics:
** No matter what he's doing, one or both of his hands are in his pocket at all times. If he takes a hand out, then something bad's going to happen. Even when he finally starts using his sword, he only swings it with one hand while keeping the other in his pocket.
** Grimmjow notes to Orihime that Ulquiorra likes to stab prey of particular interest to him in the same spot where his hollow hole is located. Ulquiorra himself doesn't seem aware he does this.
* ClimaxBoss: The final fight between Ichigo and Ulquiorra signifies the end of the quest to rescue Orihime from Hueco Mundo. Ichigo is then free to rescue the rest of his friends, and leave Hueco Mundo to the captains while he heads back to Karakura Town. It also sets up the despair that weakens him for the rest of his fights until his final battle with Aizen.
* CurbStompBattle: His first display of offense in the series consists of him blasting some holes in Orihime's escort guards before they can do a thing. He gives Ichigo a lesson of dominance during their first encounter. Completely thrashes Ichigo again after releasing his zanpakuto during their final battle and while the former is down, he proceeds to maul Uryu as well. Then Ichigo destroys him even though he's in his second release.
* DeathByIrony: He was the embodiment of nihilism, which translated to the way he mercilessly fought Ichigo. Guess who was the one to finally defeat him? An even more merciless and nihilistic version of hollow Ichigo.
* DespairEventHorizon: He was born into a group of jet black Vasto Lordes, pure white and with only one sense (sight). He then wandered the desert for an unspecified period of time until, in a moment of pure despair, he encounters a strange phenomenon that rips off most of his mask. His obsession with trusting only what he can see and his inability to understand anything that doesn't register with his sense of sight stems from this.
* TheDragon: Seemed to have been Aizen's right-hand man as well as being given missions that one would've expected to be given to Espadas with higher ranks. This led to Ichigo assuming he was the top Espada, but it's more like he's the strongest Espada that follows orders efficiently.
* DullSurprise: The most expressive he'll usually get is a slight widening of his eyes when he's caught off-guard. The first sign that Ichigo's finally pissed him off enough is when he actually starts shouting.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: His bone-white skin and jet black hair both make him stand out from all other characters around him ever since his introduction.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Calls Nnoitra "disgusting" for implying that he should take advantage of his prisoner Orihime by raping/sexually harrassing her.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: The defining theme of his CharacterDevelopment is his lack of ability to understand why ANY of the Ichigo and his friends continue fighting for Orihime when they shouldn't be able to win, and their allies keep falling. He also fails to grasp friendship, love and almost all other emotions as well. When she explains that this is due to the connections their hearts share, he is even more confused. It's a point which he questions over and over again, to Orihime and at one instance, even Ichigo.
-->"You're a fool, Kurosaki Ichigo. You fear my power, yet you still fight as if you think you can win. I don't understand you. If this is because of what you humans call a heart, then it is because of your hearts that humans feel pain. It's because of your hearts that you die."
* EvilCounterpart: In the Gotei 13, he probably most resembles Byakuya, and they both serve pretty much the same role in their respective story arcs. Both "abducted" one of Ichigo's close female friends and love interests, which brought him to Soul Society or Hueco Mundo; both served as recurring antagonists who repeatedly beat the crap out of Ichigo in all but their final battle, where Ichigo got the upper hand by surrendering to his inner Hollow...and so on. Both are also TheStoic, but where Byakuya is secretly NotSoStoic, Ulquiorra is actually so stoic as to be inhuman. Both also had a reoccuring problem within their arcs; where Byakuya struggled with a PillarsOfMoralCharacter issue, Ulquiorra struggled to understand that which he was incapable of seeing. And while Byakuya goes out in a winged angel form, Ulquiorra's Release resembles a winged bat-demon.
%% * EvilSoundsDeep: His Japanese and his English video game voices are quite deep.
* EyeScream: His eyes can be removed and crushed to display his memories. The eye restores itself later, and is apparently not painful. He goes the rest of the scene missing an eye.
* FingerGun: His Cero is shot from the index finger of either hand.
* FourIsDeath: He has a ghost-like appearance, a nihilistic philosophy and "fallen angel" transformations designed to evoke death by despair. He's the fourth Espada, the lowest rank that's still considered too powerful to enter his released state while inside Las Noches, has had four Hollow transformations (Hollow, Arrancar, Resurrecion, Segunda), his helmet transforms from four ridges to four horns, and a lot of his fights invoke the number four via chapter numbers and the number of chapters or volumes his battles span. During said fights, he manages to practically kill Ichigo twice.
* FullFrontalAssault: His clothes disappear when he transforms into his Segunda Etapa form. His privates are covered by fur.
* GreenEyes: He was the most mystic of the Espada in terms of having an almost otherworldly origin and nature even by Espada standards. His personality and nature, in combination with his appearance, made him the EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette version of the GreenEyes trope. In his Segunda Etapa form, his irises turn golden, while his sclera become green.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: Hollow Ichigo blasts him with a point-blank Cero, vaporizing half of Ulquiorra's body. He does regenerate, thanks to his HealingFactor, but it only extends his life for a little bit before he slowly disintegrates into dust.
* HealingFactor: He's the only Espada who didn't sacrifice high-speed regeneration for greater attack strength when he became an Arrancar. He has the ability to nigh-instantly regenerate everything but major organs. Theoretically, you could break this guy's neck and he'd get up in a few minutes.
* HellishPupils: Ulquiorra pupils are slitted like a cat's, drawing attention to his emotionless lack of humanity compared to other Espada. When he activates his second sword release and transforms, the sclera of his eyes change from white to dark green and his green irises become yellow, with his pupils still being slitted.
* HeyYou: Despite spending quite a bit of time around Orihime as her jailer in Las Noches, he always directly addresses her as "woman", even in his final moments when he begins to show some level of empathy toward her. He only uses her name when he's speaking about her, not toward her.
* HornedHumanoid: His mask remnants leave him with a horn on the left side of his head. His released form extends the mask to both sides of his head to give him a pair of horns. In his second released form, the mask remnants disappear, and the horns come directly from his head. His left horn is cut off by Hollow Ichigo's finishing slash, and he later returns the favor to stop a Cero directed at Uryu.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: He is the only Arrancar known to have a two-stage release, similar to a zanpakuto's bankai. He hasn't shown this to anyone but Ichigo, and claims that no one else knows about it.
* IdentityAmnesia: He has no memory of being anything but a Vasto Lorde, which shows how much he knew about humans to begin with.
* Jerkass: If he's not being ordered to do a task by Aizen or is killing someone, Ulquiorra's favorite pastime seems to be goading on people who aren't goading him on. Take how he rubbed Rukia's half-death in Ichigo's face, or threatened to force-feed Orihime if she didn't eat.
%% * KneelBeforeZod: Ulquiorra goes far out of his way to try to get Ichigo to give up against him after he enters Resurrección.
* LackOfEmpathy: Severely, although while most examples are traditionally TheSociopath, Ulquiorra just flat-out has absolutely no comprehension of human emotion.
* LeanAndMean: While Ulquiorra is lightly muscular in his base form, his Ressureccion Segunda Etapa leaves him looking rather emaciated.
* LightningBruiser: His first fight with Ichigo has him moving too fast for Ichigo to see, shrugging off his strongest attack, and killing him with his bare hands. And that's before he releases. His second released form just makes it even worse. It's fairly safe to say Ichigo only wins because of his uber-Hollow form and because Ulquiorra ran out of energy to hold his form together.
* LimaSyndrome: Subtly develops this toward Orihime, starting with mentally acknowledging her courage when she stands up to him, to being fascinated with her personality. His final moments are spent reaching out to her.
* MortalWoundReveal: After being on the receiving end of a CurbStompBattle capped off by uber-Hollow Ichigo's point-blank Cero, he manages to get back up, stop the rampage, and looks like he's about to finish his battle with Ichigo in that stoic demeanor of his. Cue his remaining wing exploding into ash, a sign that his up-to-this-point consistent HealingFactor isn't working anymore. Of course, his thoughts do reveal that his internal organs aren't coming back before this, so it's more for the characters' realization than the audience's.
%% * MrFanservice: Walks around with an at least partially open shirt much of the time as well as having a certain level of eerie, androgynous beauty.
* NeckLift: During his final battle with Ichigo, he uses his prehensile tail to lift Ichigo by the throat.
* NighInvulnerability: Ulquiorra's Hierro is durable enough that he was barely scratched from his fights with Ichigo, and not damaged at all from his fight with Grimmjow. That Hollow Ichigo was able to easily wound him is testimony to how strong he becomes.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: He absolutely mauls Ichigo during the final confrontation to get him to give up while Ichigo is doing his best and Ulquiorra isn't using his full strength, at least not until ichigo transforms into Vasto Lordes; which leads to him using one of his most powerful techniques which still doesn't work on Vasto Lordes.
* NoMouth: As a Hollow, his mask had no mouth opening, leaving him unable to eat.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Ulquiorra is not the type of person who goes into hammy speeches or sadism. He carries out his plans as efficiently as possible. Wheneven he fights against Ichigo, he does not laugh maniacally or smile. He simply does his best to eliminate him or kill him.
* NoRangeLikePointBlankRange: He puts a Cero Oscuras through Ichigo's chest at point-blank range.
* NoSell: Likes to do this. In his first fight with Ichigo, he's not strong enough to block the Getsuga Tensho outright, but sustains only ClothingDamage. In their second battle, his resurreccion form is strong enough to deflect a Getsuga Tensho with nothing but his spiritual pressure. In addition to all this, he often pulls the BarehandedBladeBlock.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: The kanji for his Zanpakuto's name translate as "Black-Winged Great Demon", and both his initial and second Resurrección give him an increasingly demonic appearance.
* PerpetualFrowner: Due to his nihilistic outlook, Ulquiorra is constantly frowning or wearing an emotionless expression. The only time he smiles is during his death scene, when he comes to understand the importance of the human heart.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: His Lanza del Relampago attack packs the kind of power you'd expect from a tactical nuke, with the explosion it produces actually dwarfing the city sized dome of Las Noches in height. After his first attempt at killing the fully hollowfied Ichigo with it fails, Ulquiorra reveals that he's capable of using this horrifyingly destructive technique in succession.
%% * PetTheDog: Chooses to save Loly and Menoly when Ichigo throws a Getsuga Tensho at them instead of taking the opportunity to attack him from behind.
%% * PowerFloats: Notice how he's now taller than Orihime and about as tall as Ichigo in the anime? He didn't grow several inches; you can catch him cheating occasionally
* PowerGivesYouWings: Ulquiorra's Resurrección, Murciélago, causes him to grow gigantic bat wings in addition to greatly boosting his power.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: In his first Resurrección form, Ulquiorra's hair grows a little past shoulder length; and in his Segunda Epta form it grows into a long mane. Both forms are accompanied by a massive increase in power.
* PrehensileTail: In his Segunda Etapa form he has a long tail that he uses to lift up Ichigo by the neck.
* RedHerring: He seemed to act as Aizen's hands, and had a very calm demeanor about him and a similar way of delivering a HannibalLecture as Aizen. All of this led Ichigo to believe he was Espada #1.
* TheRival: He ended up as the rival and ArcVillain for Hueco Mundo. Grimmjow, initially just wanting to finish off Ichigo as quickly as possible, becomes obsessed with personally defeating him after getting scarred, even going out of his way to have Orihime revive him after Ulqiorra practically kills him like Grimmjow had chastised him for not doing earlier. He ultimately gets Ichigo to admit that he came to Hueco Mundo to settle the score as well.
* SevenDeadlySins: Used as ThemeNaming, since his second/final battle with Ichigo had each sin in the title; The Envy, The Greed, The Gluttony, The Pride, The Sloth, The Wrath, and The Lust 1 through 6. Chapters entitled "The Ash" and "The Heart" wrap the fight up.
* ShoutOut: Ulquiorra's ability of "recording" things with his eye and then tearing it out so other people can have access to what was recorded was faithfully based on Black Swan, a character from Manga/SaintSeiya -- of which Kubo is a fan.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Until the official romanization of "Cifer" became canon, the commonly accepted way to spell Ulquiorra's name was "Schiffer". Notably, Wiki/TheOtherWiki still has his old name listed. Ulquiorra's name is itself a misspelling of Patricia Urquiola, a Spanish architect.
* TheSpock: He's so analytical that his regenerative powers are even used to aid in his ability to exactly report on something he's witnessed exactly as it happened via crushing his eye. As he says, he doesn't believe in what he can't see and therefore his method of understanding the world is to analyse it as clinically as possible.
* TheStoic: He is always calm and in control until his final fight, at which point he finally gets pissed at Ichigo refusing to recognize his inferiority and delivers a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown.
* StrawNihilist: Has this as his life, blood, and Aspect of Death. It's so fundamental to his nature that it's hardly even a personality aspect.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Espada aren't supposed to have a second resurreccion, but he does. Not only does it increase his power, but there's a level of mysticism attached to it that not even makes his reiatsu feel completely different to normal reiatsu. Unsurprisingly, he has the golden eyes to fit this supernatural mystery.
* TailSlap: In Segunda form, his whip-like tail becomes a long-range weapon.
* TorsoWithAView: A strange example in that it migrates. It starts out in his neck but ends up in his lower chest by the time he dies.
* TranquilFury: When Ichigo posits that he's able to keep up with Ulquiorra because the latter is becoming more like a human, Ulquiorra scowls, splits the floor in half with his Spiritual Pressure, and steps his game up. After entering his released state, he also becomes increasingly frustrated that Ichigo refuses to give up even after he clearly showed that he could NoSell Ichigo's strongest attack (mask-enhanced Gestuga Tenshou), to the point of raising his voice for the first time to insist that victory is impossible for him.
* VillainousRescue:
** He protects Loly and Menoly when Ichigo throws a Getsuga Tensho them. When they start to thank him he cuts them off, stating he "didn't do it for you two".
** Later, he saves Orihime and Ishida, at least indirectly, from the rampaging Hollow Ichigo, apparently believing he would win the fight if he cut off Ichigo's horn.
* WaveMotionGun: His Cero Oscuras is a jet black variant of the normal Cero that's powerful enough to easily overpower a Hollow mask empowered Ichigo and vaporize a significant portion of Las Noches' roof with one shot. He claims that this attack is an Espada's Cero, although it's never made clear whether or not it's a technique that all of the Espada can use or if it's exclusive to him.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Ulqiorra is initially unable to comprehend abstract concepts and emotions, especially love. He finally begins to understand it in the moment of his death, while Orihime keeps reaching for his disintegrating form.
-->"Hearts? You humans are always talking about hearts. It's as if you have them in your hands. But my eye sees everything. Nothing can escape it. What is a heart? If I rip open your chest will I see it? If I crack open your skull will I find it in there?"
* WillfullyWeak: Upon being transformed into arrancar, almost all of the hollows in Aizen's army gave up their ability to quickly regenerate in exchange for a boost in raw power. Ulquiorra is the only known arrancar who chose to keep his high-speed regeneration at the cost of this power-up, meaning that despite being one of the most powerful members of the Espada, he's actually not as strong as he could have been.

-->"Ain't no chance of salvation for us. Never has been. With or without Aizen, that's never gonna change. If there's one thing I'm grateful to that guy for, it's the fact that he gave me power. Thanks to that, I've been able to savor greater battles than ever before. I'm gonna be strong. Stronger than anyone."

The Fifth Espada, a DeathSeeker. Once, he was the Eighth Espada, but was promoted sometime after a sneak attack to Nel, the 3rd Espada of the time, whom he hates because she pitied and disrespected him. He defines the death aspect of 'Despair'. He is noted to have the greatest Hierro (iron-hard skin) amongst the Espada.

Santa Teresa, his oddly shaped...axe...thingy....zanpakutou, gives him six arms and six scythes, all capable of instant regeneration if he was to lose one or two. His number tattoo is on his tongue, and his Hollow hole is where his left eye should be - along with the remains of his Hollow mask.

Tropes associated with Nnoitra:
* AlasPoorVillain: Clearly what the anime (with a very sad music theme) aimed at, showing him as a NietzscheWannabe living behind the DespairEventHorizon, with an absurdly huge overcompensated inferiority complex.
* AnimalMotifs: His Resurrección, Santa Teresa, is the Spanish name for a praying mantis. His transformation grants him six arms, giving him an insect-like appearance, and his scythes are meant to evoke the image of a mantis' forelegs.
* AntagonistAbilities: Specifically matched up against melee characters (like Ichigo and Kenpachi), Nnoitra is problematic to fight. In addition to an inherent DamageReduction via his Hierro, he is also MultiArmedAndDangerous in Resurreccion, allowing him to deflect his opponent's weapon with one limb and then immediately counter and overwhelm them with all the others. He can even regenerate these limbs if one happens to be chopped off.
* Archenemy: Nel and Nnoitra have incompatible philosophies. She believes in never fighting without reason and avoiding it if possible, he believes fighting itself is a reason to fight. He hates women, especially women in positions of authority over him, as Nel used to be and Harribel is. Nel dismisses his philosophy and refuses to see him as a warrior. As a result, she feels he needs to be watched over to prevent himself from getting into more trouble than he can handle. Eventually, he rips off her fraccions' masks, smashes her mask, and throws her out of Las Noches.
* AxCrazy: Nnoitra delights in combat and bloodshed. Flashbacks in the anime show him slaughtering a group of hollows while laughing like a mad man.
* BladeOnAStick: His zanpakuto takes the form of two crescent moons attached at their curves, with the handle attached inside one of the curves. It looks like "--)( "
* BloodKnight: The Espada equivalent to Kenpachi in this. Nnoitra revels in combat, and even tells Neliel that alcohol can't compare to the euphoric feeling he gets in a battle
* CharacterTics: He likes to stick out his tongue when really excited, which incidentally shows off his tattoo and rank.
* CombatPragmatist: In his words, a fight is meant to be won, so dirty tactics are fair game. He ambushes Ichigo just after the his intense battle with Grimmjow so that the soul reaper would be too exhausted to successfully defend himself, and goes the extra mile by having Tesra take Orihime hostage to further dissuade Ichigo from fighting back. In the past, he also used a device supplied to him by Szayelaporro to trick Neliel into attacking an illusion of himself so he could deal her a grievous wound while her back was turned.
* DeathSeeker: Basically, Nnoitra's life goal is to kill every single person he meets, until he is either the strongest person in existence, or killed in the act. He has no problem with either option and the second one is what actually occurs.
* DespairEventHorizon: Hit it at some point in the past and kept right on going. "None of us is getting redemption." Barragan states that he represents the aspect of death that is 'despair'.
* Determinator: He manages to stand back up after Kenpachi nearly cuts him half through sheer force of will.
* DontYouDarePityMe: One of the things he hates above all else is being pitied. A huge part of his hatred towards Neliel is due to her insistence in the past on following him around and keeping him out of trouble on the grounds that he was weaker than her. just before his death, he muses on how much it hurts to be pitied, equating it to having someone stomp on an open wound.
* EvilCounterpart: Similar in some ways to Kenpachi as a bloodthirsty, fight-loving psycho with the desire to fight strong enemies, but Nnoitra is strongly distinguished by character traits, such as genuine lechery, misogyny, pettiness, arrogance, and an inferiority complex. The core of their insanity is also different: Kenpachi fights for fun, Nnoitra is a DeathSeeker; Nnoitra is obsessed with proving he is the absolute strongest, Kenpachi loves finding out the opponent might be stronger than him. However, when a fight drags on too long, Nnoitra gets frustrated. Zaraki, on the other hand, loves a long hard battle. A visual parallel is also drawn with Nnoitra's eyepatch, which is later replaced with a scar identical to Kenpachi's after taking a strong slash to the face and chest.
%% * EvilLaugh: Pulls one off after injuring Kenpachi with his hidden pair of arms. It tells you how much of a sadist he is.
* EyepatchOfPower: Wears an eyepatch over his left eye to conceal his Hollow hole, as well as his mask remnants around it.
* HeManWomanHater: He kept picking fights with Nelliel because he refused to accept women could be stronger than men and loathed her pity. At a meeting, he mocks Harribel, claiming she's too scared to fight. His suggestions on what Ulquiorra could do his "pet" Orihime draw Ulquiorra's disgust. Later, he shoves his fingers into Orihime's mouth to silence her, a gesture so loaded in Japan that the animators censored the scene into having a hand clamped over her mouth instead.
* HealingFactor: His released form can regrow any arm that Kenpachi cuts off. The regeneration does not seem to extend beyond his arms, though.
* HighCollarOfDoom: You could be forgiven for assuming that spoon-like piece of clothing that juts out high above his head was some kind of hat. It's actually the collar of his shirt.
* HornedHumanoid: His released form has asymmetrical horns that look like a crescent driven halway through his skull.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: His Resurrecion looks like it has four arms, but it really has six. He also has a very powerful HealingFactor, just in case anyone actually manages to damage him.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: His zanpakutou is...odd, to say the least. The best way to describe it would be to call it an enormous crescent shaped scythe with an identical crescent blade stacked on top of it, facing the other direction. As a result of it's bizarre design, he's rarely able to hit an opponent with the blades of the weapon except when charging with the zanpakutou pointed forward like a spear, and instead opts to simply swing it like a club. In the past, his zanpakutou had a slightly different, though equally strange appearance, being only one large crescent blade facing upward.
* Jerkass: Abrasive, vulgar and misogynistic, he admits he loathes women holding higher ranks than himself, and displays no respect for Harribel now or Nel in the past as a result. His enmity with Nel extended to their incompatible battle philosophies. His botched attempt to murder her and her fraccions led to their de-powering and exile. Even the emotionless Ulquiorra recoils in disgust when Nnoitra implies the captive Orihime should be raped. When later restraining her, Nnoitra shoves two fingers into her mouth, a gesture associated with Japanese porn that the anime changes into a more chaste gagging scene.
%% * KickTheDog: Everything he does, really. Even he doesn't seem to enjoy his sadism that much.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: He attacks both Grimmjow and Ichigo after their battle when neither of them are in any condition to fight back. He then goes on to essentially torture Ichigo as the the soul reaper desperately tries to defend himself and he makes Orihime watch.
* TheLawOfDiminishingDefensiveEffort: When he fights an exhausted Ichigo, he realizes that he can simply grab Tensa Zangetsu and muses that he wasted energy evading it beforehand. He's visibly shocked when Neliel easily cuts him. Kenpachi starts out doing no better than Ichigo, leading Nnoitra to repeatedly boast that Kenpachi's blade will never cut him, but takes evasive action when he gets pinned down and nearly stabbed in the face. When Kenpachi lampshades this trope by pointing out that obviously he must have seen some danger, Nnoitra brushes off his evasion as something that any trained warrior would naturally do.
* LeanAndMean: Nnoitra is a misogynistic, battle-obsessed sadist who is among the most-unpleasant of the Espada, and has an incredibly stringy physique (though his torso is still muscular).
* ManiacTongue: His tongue is strangely long, and he often sticks it out to either display his rank tattooed on it or to fire Ceros from the tip, giving him an even more psychotic appearance.
* MoralMyopia: He decides that Chad is NotWorthKilling, claiming that nobody will think better of him for killing weaklings. Later, Nnoitra is shown to have a massive inferiority complex and hates it when people show him mercy because they think he's too weak.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: In Resureccion, he can fight with up to six arms, each one holding a weapon. He can also manifest as many as he wants at any one time, allowing him to attack with four and then reveal the remaining two at the worst possible moment.
* NoSell: Chad's best attack doesn't budge him (despite immediately previous [=TKOing=] a Privaron Espada), and an exhausted Ichigo's blade harmlessly bounces off his skin.
* NonstandardCharacterDesign: His eyes are thinner than every single major character's so far, and the large upper teeth. (Rather like Shinji's, oddly enough.)
%% * NoodlePeople: He's also much taller and thinner than most other characters.
* NotWorthKilling: Spares Chad's life after defeating him, explaining to Tesla that he's not going to waste energy finishing off someone who's as good as dead already. Hypocrite He hates it when his opponents show this attitude towards him, on the other hand.
* OrganDodge: Kenpachi tries to stab him through his head and into his brain. Luckily for Nnoitra, Kenny stabbed him through his EyepatchOfPower, which actually hides his Hollow hole, so he hits nothing but air and Nnoitra uses this opportunity to stab Kenpachi through the chest with his hand.
* PetTheDog: He cares enough for his Fraccion Tesla to warn him to get away from Kenpachi after sensing the latter's power. The databooks confirm that Tesla is Nnoitra's "confidant", and that Nnoitra experiences "shaken grief" when Tesla is cut down.
* RuleOfSymbolism: According to the databook, Nnoitra is symbolic of an "Asura" from Buddhist theology. An Asura is essentially a deity that has become addicted to anger, violence, sadism, and envy and is utterly incapable of solving any conflict with anything less than violence and death. They are also egotistical to a fault, and feel a compulsion to look down upon others.
* SlasherSmile: As a BloodKnight, he lives for battle... and hopes to die that way, too. Anything that involves or leads to violence and bloodshed is something that makes him grin.
%% * SmallNameBigEgo: Despite being the Quinto Espada, he claims to be the strongest Espada.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Even after it's been confirmed that his name is "Nnoitra", a lot of people still call him "Noitora." calls him "Nnoitora". He's actually named after Richard Neutra, a famous architect. In the dub, it's pronounced 'Noitora.'
* SuperToughness: Even by the standards of the Arrancar, Nnoitra's Hierro was considered exceptional. His skin is durable enough that his hand only produces sparks by grabbing hold of Ichigo's Tensa Zangetsu, and takes multiple hits from Kenpachi's blade with no visible damage, until Kenpachi finally gets used to the toughness of his skin.
* TookALevelInBadass: He was previously the 8th Espada at some point in the past, but managed to claw his way up to 5th, and given the tough-ass time he gave Kenpachi he seems to have earned it. Neliel was once so strong she could beat him down, without taking in a scratch, as Nnoitra is bloodied up. When they meet in the current timeline, Nnoitra is an even match for Neliel, as none of her attacks did any significant damage to him. Nnoitra is also a recognition that the Espada have improved greatly since Neliel's expulsion.
* TorsoWithAView: His Hollow hole is in his head, in place of one of his eyes. It's normally covered by his eyepatch, so when Kenpachi stabs him through it expecting an instant kill, it simply passes harmlessly through his head.
* VariableLengthChain: The chain attached to the hilt of his weapon can grow and shrink in length, which he puts to use by extending it long enough to swing his zanpakutou around like a flail.
* VictoryByEndurance: Nnoitra uses this against Ichigo. After Ichigo defeats Grimmjow and apparently rescued Orihime, Nnoitra announces his presence by one-shotting the exhausted Grimmjow before thrashing the equally exhausted Ichigo. In Nnoitra's case, this was triply assholish because Ichigo, Grimmjow and Orihime were all equally fair game in his eyes.
* VillainousBreakdown: Kenpachi's clear enjoyment of what appears to Nnoitra to be a losing battle starts to strongly unnerve Nnoitra. As Kenpachi continues to laugh and enjoy himself, Nnoitra descends into raving and swearing at him. Eventually, this psychological edge causes Nnoitra to be too shaken to think to defend himself when Kenpachi finally goes for a killing strike, crippling him in one blow.
* WouldHitAGirl: Explicitly a part of his life philosophy given his misogyny, he has no reservations against trying to wail on Neliel, even in her child form.
* WouldHurtAChild: As noted above, he has zero qualms about brutalizing Nel in her child form. He also attempts to go after Yachiru when it looks like he's killed Zaraki. Fortunately for Yachiru and unfortunately for Nnoitra, Zaraki isn't going to go down that easily.
-->Yachiru: "You should watch out! Ken-chan'll get mad if you start attacking me!"

-->"They're all cowards, every damn one of them. Whatever. I'll just consume them. As they become my flesh and blood, they will see beyond. I... I am the king!"

Arrancar 12 and the sixth Espada. He views himself as a king and is angered when he feels that anyone is failing to give him the respect he deserves. Despite his violence and instability, he does have a personal code of honor and fair play. He is despised by Tousen for his disrespect and vicious behavior. He defines the death aspect of 'Destruction'. His number tattoo is on the right side of his back, and his Hollow hole is in his abdomen.

His Zanpakuto is Pantera, which transforms him into a cat-man hybrid that is capable of extreme speed. He can also create giant energy claws and howl loudly enough to cause shock waves.

-->Voiced by: Creator/JunichiSuwabe (JP), Creator/DavidVincent (EN), Creator/EdsonMatus (Latin-American Spanish)
Tropes associated with Grimmjow:
* AnimalMotifs: As an Adjuchas he strongly resembled a panther, and his Resurrección, Pantera, gives him a number of feline traits .
* AnArmAndALeg: Tousen cuts off his left arm as punishment for insubordination, making sure to burn it to ashes afterwards. The injury was considered debilitating enough to strip him of his rank, something Yammy had the fortune to avoid because his arm was left intact after Ichigo cut it off. After Orihime is kidnapped, she is ordered to display her power by restoring it.
* AxCrazy: Grimmjow is a proud BloodKnight who is obsessed with combat, and the aspect of death he embodies is Destruction. Even when fighting alongside the Soul Reapers against the Wandenreich, he claims he is only doing so to have another shot at fighting Ichigo to the death in Hueco Mundo
* BadassBaritone: He's one of the most powerful arrancar in Aizen's army, and is portrayed with an appropriately deep voice in the Japanese anime, courtesy of Creator/JunichiSuwabe.
%% * BadassBoast: "I tore [my right arm] off. I don't need two arms to kick your ass."
* BareFistedMonk: Like Ulquiorra, Grimmjow generally forgoes using his sword in favor of pummeling his opponents with punches and kicks. Upon releasing his zanpakutou, he lacks any form of weapon beyond the blades protruding from his forearms and calves, and relies primarily on pure hand-to-hand combat.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: His Resurrección gives him two curved blades that jut out from his forearms, just below his elbows.
* BlatantLies: Grimmjow defies Aizen's orders and secretly travels to the human world in an attempt to confront Ichigo and find out how strong he is in combat. Their fight ends when Tousen arrives to drag Grimmjow back to Aizen for punishment. The next time Ichigo and Grimmjow meet, Grimmjow is missing an arm. Aizen's punishment was to permit Tousen to destroy Grimmjow's arm, demoting him from the ranks of the Espada in the process. When Ichigo asks Grimmjow what happened to his arm, Grimmjow retorts that he cut it off himself because he doesn't need two arms to beat Ichigo. Ichigo doesn't seem fooled by that answer but goes along with it.
* BloodKnight: Grimmjow will fully admit that he loves to battle, seeing it more as something Hollows have to do. However, he'll only attack opponents who can battle, and saved Orihime while also mauling the two Arrancars attacking her explicitly so that he could have a fair fight with Ichigo. Nnoitra on the other hand will simply kill anyone he feels is close enough to him in power whether they can fight back or not.
* CatsAreMean: Was originally a panther-like Adjuchas. Also one of the most violent characters in the series.
* CharacterTics: Grimmjow tends to flex his fingers as if they were claws when particularly excited or riled.
* CombatPragmatist: Anything is game for this guy in a fight. For example, after Rukia froze him with Sode no Shirayuki, he broke free of the ice. The first thing he does is to grab her head and charge up a Cero, attempting to blow Rukia's head up point-blank to make sure she couldn't retaliate. He also didn't hesitate to rip out Askin's heart while the quincy's back was turned.
%% * ComeWithMeIfYouWantToLive: Basically what he did with Orihime. Then again, he'd just taken care of the threat to her safety, so it's more like "Come With Me If You Don't Want To Die".
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Both his eyes and hair are light blue.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Develops a major vendetta against Ichigo. Why? Ichigo wounded him bad enough to leave a scar while fighting back after Grimmjow had just spent about ten minutes beating the holy living hell out of Ichigo. Oh, and Ichigo's self-confidence irritates him.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Not as intense as Nnoitra, but he sees Ichigo's confidence as condescending. To him Ichigo's confidence is his way of degrading his enemy, and it royally pisses him off.
* EnergyWeapon: His ultimate attack, Desgarrón, produces ten gigantic claws made of spirit energy that he can launch at his enemies with absolutely devastating force.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While he'd gladly kill his own allies in order to recover a lost rank, if Grimmjow feels he is in debt, he will go out of his way to repay it -- displayed when he rescues Orihime, who had healed his arm, from two Arrancar girls who had been torturing her. He also insists that she heal her face's injuries from Loly because he doesn't want to look like the one responsible.
* EvilCounterpart: To Ichigo. They're both reckless, irreverant and stubborn Blood Knights that have no scruples over how to win a fight, but whereas Ichigo is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, Grimmjow is a sadistic murderer who cares only about getting stronger, payback, and pride. Furthermore, Ichigo fights to protect his allies, while Grimmjow kills his allies if they steal his rank. A major moment of symbolism occurs when you compare their species - Ichigo is a Soul Reaper with an inner Hollow; Grimmjow is a Hollow with a Zanpakuto. Taking it a step further is their differences in color. Ichigo has orange hair and wears black, while Grimmjow has blue hair and wears white.
%% * EvilLaugh: Grimmjow's laugh is crazy.
* FacialMarkings: Has light blue lines below his eyes, similar to the eye markings on the Panthera genus of cats.
* FangsAreEvil: His Hollow mask remnants take the form of half of a fanged jaw attached to the side of his face. Grimmjow's actual canines grow considerably in his released state, adding to his more feral appearance.
* IdiotBall: While he's chasing Askin in the final arc, the Sternritter suddenly throws a Gift Ball at him. Rather than avoid the strange attack entirely, he chooses to swipe at it with his arm, getting poisoned and put out of action for quite some time. Askin compares this to a child not learning to be cautious of gifts from strangers.
%% * Jerkass: He has a sense of honor, but most of the time, he has a distinct LackOfEmpathy and a penchant for No Holds Barred Beatdowns.
* KickTheDog: He has a pretty long laundry list of villainous moments. It starts with beating Ichigo's face to a pulp in their first fight; stabbing Rukia in her gut and throwing her to the ground; taking explosive potshots at Nel and Orihime, which forced Ichigo to take several bullets in the back; literally kicking Ichigo's corpse so he could see the hole made by Ulquiorra; and choking Orihime when she refuses to prop Ichigo up for another fight.
* KlingonPromotion: He quickly regains his lost rank as the Sexta Espada by killing Luppi, the current Sexta. Judging from his expression, Aizen predicted this would happen.
* LackOfEmpathy:
** The only time he shows even the slightest concern is in regards to his Fraccions, all of whom were killed under his watch. Even then, he didn't really care; it was more surprise that they lost than anything else.
** Another case comes in how he wanted Orihime to revive Ichigo... just so he could kill him anyway.
%% * LaughingMad: When he butchers Luppi and gets his rank back.
* LeftForDead: Nobody seemed to care to check up on him. Although, Ichigo was preoccupied with Nnoitra, Nelliel, Kenpachi, Aizen unveiling his plan before leaving to Karakura, and Starrk taking Orihime to notice much else.
* LittleBitBeastly: His released form gives him cat ears, a tail, long hair, changes his hands and feet into paws and his nails into claws, but he retains his human-looking face.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Upon entering his Resurrección state, the first thing he does is let out a roar that produces gale-force winds and staggers Ichigo from dozens of meters away.
* MrFanservice: Aside from having a very handsome face and a deep, sexy voice, Grimmjow's choice of apparel includes a small bolero jacket with no shirt underneath, which shows off his impressive abdominals at all times.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: His first fight with Ichigo is too one-sided to be anything else, with Grimmjow brutally pummeling him with only his fists. During their second fight, he once again lays a similar vicious beatdown on Ichigo after his Hollow mask breaks.
* NoRangeLikePointBlankRange: At the end of his second fight with Ichigo, he pins the latter's arms to the ground so he can prepare a Cero right in front of Ichigo's face, promising him that the close range will prevent him from feeling any pain as his head is vaporized. Ichigo is saved by Rukia, who Grimmjow then attempts to do the same thing to while outright grabbing her head, but she is saved by Shinji. Luppi and Menoly can attest to what happens if he's uninterrupted.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: He tells Ichigo that the only reason he's helping everyone oppose Yhwach is because of the threat of destruction to Hueco Mundo; if it's destroyed, he doesn't know where else to kill Ichigo.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: To Ichigo, to the point of taking Orihime out of her cell to heal him after he is nearly killed by Ulqiorra, which Grimmjow himself insisted that he should have done earlier.
* PantheraAwesome: His form during his Adjuchas days was that of a white panther instead of a normal black panther. Also, his zanpakuto is named Pantera, Spanish for "Panther"; it doesn't take a genius to guess what his released form looks like.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: His aspect of death is Destruction and every fight he's in, the surroundings get completely trashed. Shinji even lampshades it.
* PetTheDog: After rescuing her from Loly and Menoly, he insisted Orihime heal her own injuries before he took her to revive Ichigo.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: His Pantera form makes his hair grow so long that it reaches his legs.
* PragmaticVillainy:
** Needed Orihime to revive Ichigo for another fight, so he brought her along to make sure of it. Similarly, en route to Ichigo's location, he had Orihime BoundAndGagged with a large piece of cloth covering her, presumably so she wouldn't be detected by the other Arrancar and seemingly took the time to cover her wrists with a piece of cloth under the chains.
** Way before that, when Aizen held a meeting with the Espada and showed Ichigo, Uryu and Chad heading for Las Noches, Grimmjow wanted to kill them straight away, stating that you eliminate vermin before it has a chance to fight back.
* PreMortemOneLiner: Once Orihime heals his arm, just before he obliterated Luppi with a Cero:
-->Luppi: Grimmjow...you bastard!
--> Grimmjow: Damn right. See you later...(charges up a Cero) former Number Six.
* PsychoForHire: Comes with being AxCrazy. Unlike most of the Espada, he basically only worked with Aizen to get stronger and has no qualms killing or attacking other Arrancars.
* TheRival: He was the go-to antagonist to Ichigo, before being supplanted by Ulquiorra after his third fight with Ichigo.
* ScarsAreForever: He carries two scars on his chest. The vertical scar running down his torso is a memento of his first fight with Ichigo while the curved scar following his collarbone is the consequence of Nnoitra's ambush attack after he loses his final fight with Ichigo.
* SkewedPriorities: The first thing he does when he finally returns during the Thousand Year Blood War is try to start another fight with Ichigo, even though he's supposed to be helping Ichigo and his friends take down Yhwach and the last Sternritters. Neliel immediately calls him out on this.
* SlasherSmile: Constantly flashes a vicious, toothy smile when excited. Just look at the picture.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His first name was written "Grimmjaw" by fans before the official spelling came out. It's actually derived from Nicholas Grimshaw.
* TailSlap: He grows a cat-like tail in Resurrección state that's powerful enough to send Ichigo flying with one hit.
* ThereWasADoor: When he interrupts Loly and Menoly beating the crap out of Orihime, he enters the room by blowing open a hole in the wall about five feet from the door. Loly decides to point out the obvious.
-->Loly: Why didn't you use the door, smartass?
* ThirdTimesTheCharm: The first two times he tried to release his Zanpakuto, he was interrupted before he could do so. Gin made fun of it in an omake. It is only in his third and final battle against Ichigo that he is able to use his Resurrección uninhibited.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Grimmjow's great desire is to meet Ichigo again so that he can engage in a fight to the death, something he feels is unresolved. He claims the reason he agreed to help Urahara is to achieve that desire. However, his attempt to restart their old fight is interrupted by Nel, who warns him they've got bigger fish to fry.
* TorsoWithAView: Grimmjow's Hollow hole is located in the middle of his abdomen.
* UnusualEars: His released form gives him long catlike ears with furry tufts.
* VillainousRescue: He demolishes Menoly and brutalizes Loly, the latter of whom was abusing Orihime, in order to get her to revive Ichigo for another fight. Once they get to Ichigo and she starts healing him, Grimmjow is confronted by Ulquiorra and seals him in Caja Negacion. It's implied he's the one who saved Urahara, Orihime, and Chad from Quilge Opie.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Before the time-skip, his tiny bolero jacket covers nothing, and it gets shredded more often than not. After the time-skip, he wears a black shirt underneath the bolero.
* WaveMotionGun: His Gran Rey Cero, noted by Harribel's fraccions to be forbidden under Las Noches. Due to its blast radius, it's easy to see why. It is also considered to be a particularly powerful Cero, by Grimmjow himself.
* WouldHurtAChild: He threatens to kill Nel if she doesn't stop crying over Ichigo's grievous injuries from Ulquiorra, though she was lucky to at least get a warning first.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Grimmjow has light blue hair that turns into a long mane in his Resurrección.

caption-width-right:250:

-->"Everything is 'governed' by its rightful master. Subordinates act under the orders of their superiors. The masses live under the rule of their king. The clouds move according to the will of the wind. The moonlight is ruled by the light of the sun."

The 7th of the Espada members. He claims to be the fastest of the Espada, fast enough to temporarily create clones of himself to confuse and trap the enemy. He's usually very calm and contemplative, but he harbors a deep hatred for Soul Reapers for killing hollows. He defines the death aspect of 'Intoxication'. The location of his number tattoo is unknown, and his Hollow hole is in his right nipple.

His Zanpakuto is Brujeria, and it transforms his lower body into something similar to that of a sea urchin with 50 eyes covering his body. Each of these eyes are capable of "tagging" targets and telekinetically controlling said targets. If the eyes are incapacitated, he can open 8 more on his forehead.

-->Voiced by: Creator/TaitenKusunoki (JP), Greg Eagles (Hueco Mundo Arc Part 1), Creator/NeilKaplan (Hueco Mundo Arc Part 2) (EN), Arturo Casanova (Latin-American Spanish)
%% * AnimalMotifs: His resurreccion resembles a sea urchin.
* AntagonistAbilities: Zommari's abilities are designed to turn everything around him into a weapon, including his opponents' own limbs. Further, if he manages to mark your head, he can directly control you and force you to either commit suicide or attack your own allies.
* BaldOfEvil: He doesn't have a speck of hair on his head, instead having his mask remnants in the form of spikes.
%% * BreakTheHaughty: Tried to perform one on Byakuya. Fails badly at it and even sees it backfiring on him.
* ClippedWingAngel: Zommari's Resurrecion grants him a useful and powerful mind control ability. However, its shape (which replaces his legs with a pink, pumpkin-like bulb) seems to have deprived him of his speed, as once Byakuya learned that he could block Zommari's ability with Kido, the Espada did little to move or attempt to dodge the Soul Reaper's attacks.
* DoppelgangerSpin: Has the ability to move so quickly he can create clones of himself. These clones are capable of attacking but only last a short time.
* DrunkWithPower: His aspect of death is "intoxication". After releasing, he shows a great deal of arrogance and condescension towards his opponent and has a villainous breakdown when he realizes he's really not that great.
* EvilCounterpart: To Byakuya, sort of. They are both stoic yet NotSoStoic underneath, both of their special abilities involve speed and kidou-based abilities. The difference lies in the 'passion' part of their natures. Zommari represented intoxication and therefore had never learned to reign in excess. Byakuya, however, had learned a long time ago to discipline the excesses within his own personality.
* ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: Explaining the nature of his Resurrección to Byakuya was what enabled the Soul Reaper to pinpoint the weak spots in his technique and kill him.
* ExtraEyes: He has 48 eyes on his release form's body in addition to his two normal eyes, and eight open up on his forehead in the last part of the fight.
* GratuitousJapanese: His BANZAI! AIZEN-SAMA!!! was more or less left untranslated in the English dub, apart from replacing "Aizen-sama" with "Lord Aizen".
%% * IAmNotLeftHanded: His reveal of eight more eyes in his forehead.
%% * LargeHam: "BANZAI! AIZEN-SAMA!" "Why won't you take my love!?"
* LightningBruiser: Self-proclaimed fastest Espada, capable of creating tangible afterimages, and strong enough to fight evenly with a Captain for an extended period.
* LogicalWeakness: His eyes can control anything they look at. Thing--singular. If there are more threats than he has eyes, then he can't do a thing about them all.
* MarionetteMaster: His release ability Amor allows him to control anyone he looks at.
* MoralMyopia: He hates soul reapers for killing hollows simply because hollows eat human souls, and he rants about how soul reapers have no god given right to hunt them. It never occurs to him that, by his logic, hollows have no right to prey on humans either.
* Pride: Inevitable as he serves as an EvilCounterpart for Byakuya. Seriously, almost all the talk during their fight is about "Which one of us is the most prideful, therefore the most despicable?".
%% * ScaryBlackMan: At least before using Ressurection.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Byakuya easily proved Zommari was this. The self-proclaimed fastest Espada was no match for a Soul Reaper who was functioning with only one arm and one leg and for all his strength, in the end he was defeated through kidou and a sealed zanpakutou. As Byakuya said, "You make the title 'fastest Espada' weep".
%% * SycophanticServant: BANZAI AIZEN-SAMA!
* ThisCannotBe: When Byakuya showed he could easily counteract his ability twice. He didn't actually say it out loud, but his facial expression left no doubt about it. Much more blatant in the anime though.
* TorsoWithAView: His Hollow hole is over his left nipple according to the databook.
* VillainousBreakdown: Once Byakuya figures out how to counter his Amor, Zommari's sense of cool goes out the window and he continues using his Amor over and over again despite it clearly not working. After Byakuya has him dead to rights, Zommari begins raving about the arrogance of shinigami like Byakuya hunting hollows, until the captain finally silences him for good.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Complains about this to Byakuya -- he even made a few good points. Unfortunately, he made them while trying to kill Byakuya's beloved younger sister when she was unconscious and defenseless. This, of course, made it personal, so Zommari got killed anyway.

caption-width-right:250:

-->"Eternally repeating that cycle of death and rebirth, an existence such as this... truly, mine is what may be called a 'perfect existence'!"

Szayelaporro is the 8th Espada and head of research development in Hueco Mundo. He is pretty much a lot like Mayuri: prepared for anything, has little to no feelings for other beings, and is a complete mad scientist. He also considers himself a perfect being with his powers. Everything he does is...well, nasty. He defines the death aspect of 'Madness'. The location of his number tattoo is unknown, and his Hollow hole is in his penis.

His Zanpakuto is Fornicaras and yes, it does mean "you will fornicate" in Spanish. It gives him a parasitic worm motif with various and deadly abilities, including something eerily similar to voodoo.

-->Voiced by: Creator/KosukeToriumi (JP), Creator/BenjaminDiskin (EN), Javier Olguín (Latin-American Spanish)
%% * AGodAmI: Gives a big speech about how he is "perfect", "immaculate", and "immortal".
* AgentPeacock: Szayelaporro will stop a fight just so he can change into a less torn set of clothing and whose entire theme is full of sexual innuendo. As an Espada, he can take on Shinigami captains and he's a leader of Hollows, although he tends to cultivate followers solely to eat them when he needs to power up.
* AndIMustScream: Due to a poison he accidentally injests, his perceptions are speeded up to the point that the few seconds it takes for Mayuri to kill him seem like they took thousands of years. Thousands of years of simply staring at a sword and waiting for it to stab him.
* AnimalMotifs: His resurreccion is related to the parasitic worm. The tentacles he gains also make him resemble a butterfly, and he describes himself as a phoenix.
* AntagonistAbilities: With preparation time and advance analysis of future opponents, Szayel can nullify any of his opponent's powers. He can use his wings to create Voodoo Dolls that mimic his opponents powers and fight on his behalf - if he crushes those dolls, the real opponent will take the equivalent damage and if the opponents crush the dolls, more dolls will appear. He can even take control of anything that eats him and resurrect himself by allowing him to burrow into an opponent and consume them from the inside out.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Given enough time to properly analyze his opponents' reiatsu, he can easily NoSell anything that they throw at him. He tells Pesche and Dondochakka that their CombinationAttack failed simply because they didn't use it sooner.
* AxCrazy: He's normally calm and collected, though mocking. However, he defines the aspect of Madness and it shows: He is completely unhinged.
* BadassBoast: Szayel brags at length about how he's perfect and how Mayuri can never win...right before Mayuri's superhuman drug takes effect, incapacitating the Arrancar and allows Mayuri to win. His boast merely pissed Mayuri off as well.
%% * Bishonen: Out of the male Arrancar, he's definitely the most androgynous looking.
* BodySnatcher: If he is eaten while in Resurrección, he will take over his devourer's nervous system, enabling him to control their bodies.
* CampStraight: With his pink hair and exceedingly feminine-sounding voice, Szayel also displays rather suspect mannerisms, such as commenting on his opponents' attractiveness, and should his clothes be damaged, he'll stop the fight to change. However, despite his stereotypically flamboyant mannerisms and appearance, he is disturbed when he thinks Renji's actions could be considered flirtation.
%% * CardCarryingVillain: His image poem says it all. "Tell me I'm the thing you hate the most."
* CrazyPrepared: Szayel prepares contingency plans and comes up with ways to counteract his enemies on-the-fly, and even if he is defeated has a number of ways to recover and keep fighting.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Apparently he was simply stabbed in the chest. What makes it cruel and unusual is that he experienced it (and the subsequent pain) like it lasted centuries or even millennia.
--> "Oh When? When will the time come for this sword to pierce my heart? Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry...PLEASE HURRY UP AND KILL ME!!!"
* DeathByIrony: Effortlessly trashes Renji because he was using Yylfort to spy on him and knew how to counter all of Renji's techniques. Then gets taken apart by Mayuri because he did the same thing to him using Ishida.
* DubNameChange: Apparently "Fornicaras" was too risque by Creator/AdultSwim's standards, so in the TV broadcast they changed it to "La Lujuriosa" ("the lustful"). In the Italian manga the command "sip" (sorseggia) was changed to "succhia" (Suck), with everything that implies...
* EvilCounterpart: Both are pretty bad, but the main difference is that Mayuri does the terrible things he does ForScience. Szayel believes that he's already perfect and does the things he does for pure sadism.
* EvilGenius: He's completely insane and twisted, but he's also capable of some very effective preparations and tricks to compensate for his lack of actual power.
* EvilKnockoff: One of his Resurreccion powers unleashes dark liquid upon his enemies, and creates clones of them when they make physical contact with as little as a droplet of that liquid. As an added quirk, he sometimes modifies the clones' appearance to suit his personal "sense of aesthetics".
%% * FanDisservice: A lot of his abilities and comments have a creepy sexual slant to them with occasional rape overtones.
%% * FauxAffablyEvil: Don't let his calm and polite demeanor fool you.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: He is a sadistic MadScientist whose mask remnants resemble eyeglasses.
* GeekPhysiques: During the early stages of his fight with Uryuu and Renji, his clothing is so badly damaged by Uryuu's Sprenger explosion that his entire torso is exposed revealing how thin his body is. However, unlike other thin characters, such as Uryuu, Nnoitra or even Ichigo, there is no muscle definition to his form and every clear shot of his body heavily emphasises the shape and position of his ribs. While other thin characters are muscled or well-toned, Szayel simply looks emaciated. Unlike most other Espada, he doesn't fight physically. He takes the time to research his potential opponents in advance so that, by the time he's confronting them, he's figured out how to negate their abilities; for him, battle is a scientific puzzle to be solved through the power of intellect. When physical fighting is required, he can create copycat dolls of his opponents, forcing his opponents to fight the dolls instead of him.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His Gabriel technique essentially impregnates Nemu with a new body after Mayuri's Bankai devours his old one, but being inside her exposes him to Mayuri's undiluted superhuman drug, which completely incapacitates him so Mayuri can take his sweet time stabbing his heart. In 'Spirits Are Forever With You' this happens again since his method of stealing techniques by absorbing reiryoku allows Roka to learn Mugetsu and fire it off at him.
* HollywoodVoodoo: He creates dolls of his opponents by temporarily absorbing them into his "wings". These dolls contain pills that represent each of the victim's internal organs and bear their names in Spanish. Destroying any of these pills does the same to its associated organ.
* HypocriticalHumour: Despite being laden with innuendo and having a Zanpakuto whose name means "fornicate", he is creeped out by Pesche taking out his Zanpakuto from his loincloth.
-->"Just what are you pulling out of there?!"
* ImAHumanitarian: Well, all Hollows eat humans, and many eat other Hollows before they're made into arrancar, but Szayelaporro is the only arrancar shown eating other arrancars. Specifically, his own fracciones are designed to act as powerful healing medicine when he eats them.
* ImpromptuTracheotomy: Gets hit by Seele Schinder in the neck. In the anime, the attack instead landed in his chest.
* IntimateMarks: He's one of the few Espada whose Hollow Hole and Espada Tattoo are never shown. WordOfGod is that they're on his genitalia.
* KarmicDeath: From his perspective it took centuries or millennia for Mayuri's leisurely sword strike to finally reach his chest, at which point he was even more insane with sheer boredom and begging for death inside his mind.
%% * LargeHam: Especially during his fight with Mayuri.
* LaughablyEvil: In much the same vein as his counterpart, Mayuri, a good amount of Szayel's screentime crosses over into morbid, vaguely uncomfortable humor, mostly on account of his ridiculous, flamboyant hamminess.
* LifeDrinker: His Gabriel ability allows him to "impregnate" himself into a target after he's taken massive damage, at which point he absorbs all of the bodily fluids and nutrients of his victim, allowing him to fully regenerate his body.
* MadScientist: He's the scientist of Aizen's army of arrancar, and has created all manner of strange inventions. He's also every bit as amoral as fellow mad scientist, Mayuri, if not more.
* TheManBehindTheMan: He was the one that ordered the Exequias to kill Dordoni and Cirucci, since he wanted to extract Reiatsu samples from Ichigo's gang.
* MoralEventHorizon: InUniverse, he crossed the BlueAndOrangeMorality line for Mayuri by claiming to have achieved perfection, which offends Mayuri as a man of science. In Mayuri's words, a scientist is someone who seeks to constantly improve. So by saying that he was perfect, Szayelaporro was saying that he no longer needed to improve, and had thus lost the right to call himself a scientist.
* MythicalMotifs: He equates his Gabriel technique to the Phoenix, as he can turn death into a mere segment of his life cycle before creating a new body from the Reishi in someone else's.
%% * NerdGlasses: His mask fragments resemble these. He even pushes them up, showing they're not strongly attached.
* NotQuiteDead: He and Aaroniero quite literally went to Hell together. They basically went from one form of dead to another. The novel plays with this idea by having him return to attack Soul Society after getting a power up.
* PostMortemComeback: An Squick incredibly gruesome case. After getting devoured by Ashisogi Jizo, Szayelaporro reanimated himself within Nemu's intestines, after burrowing into her body via her navel. Her stomach ended up grossly enlarged, splitting her skin open and allowing him to be "reborn" through her mouth. The process left her an emaciated, shrivelled-up husk. It didn't work, ultimately, since he absorbed a sense-accelerating substance that was placed into Nemu beforehand by Mayuri, which led to his own CruelAndUnusualDeath.
* ResurrectiveImmortality: By the use of his Gabriel ability he can resurrect himself inside the body of his target, potentially killing them in the process.
* SevenDeadlySins: Kubo Tite revealed in the Masked interview that some of the Espada were modeled after the Seven Deadly Sins. His Resurrección, Fornicaras, which means "you will fornicate" in Spanish, along with his ability to "impregnate" an enemy with himself mark him as Lust.
* SinisterSurveillance: He has spy bugs placed on his brother, and in every section of his lair which he uses to learn all he can about Uryu and Renji.
%% * SissyVillain: For a mad scientist, he's awfully concerned about his clothes and hair.
* SmugSnake: He may be a bona fide EvilGenius, but he also believes himself to be an infallible intellect and the perfect being because of his nightmarish methods of escaping from death, and his only fights prior to Mayuri are him attacking people he has already analyzed to put the advantage overwhelmingly in his favor. When he overestimates himself too much against Mayuri, however, his every technique is thwarted and he winds up dying horrifically because he tried to kill Nemu to save himself.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: A posthumous example. After Nemu sacrifices herself in a failed attempt to destroy Pernida, a hallucination of Szayelaporro mocks Mayuri over his grief.
* TorsoWithAView: Subverted. Per WordOfGod his Hollow hole is located on the tip of his penis which, while commonly of significant sentimental value, is not vitally important.
* UltimateLifeForm: Claimed to be perfect, since he can come back to life after being killed and take over anything that eats him.
* VillainousBreakdown: Starts out smug and confident in his superiority. When Mayuri starts messing with him, he throws a temper tantrum and starts swearing a lot. He's also breaking down shortly before his death, begging for Mayuri to hurry up, but then again from his perspective, he's been frozen in place with a sword slooooooooooowly piercing him for an ETERNITY by then.
* TheWorfEffect: Very rare villainous version. He appears in the prelude of Hell Verse solely as a means of helping the audience gauge the power level of Hell's denizens.
%% * YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Cotton-candy pink, in his case.

[[caption-width-right:254:

-->"If it's about our faces, keep it to yourself. We got tired of hearing people's thoughts about them a very long time ago."

Aaroniero is the 9th and only Gillian Espada. Because of his nonhuman appearance, he usually wears a white mask with eight tiny holes over his head. He is prideful of his status as an Espada, a position he has managed to maintain due to his potential for infinite growth by continuing to devour other Hollows even as an Arrancar. He defines the death aspect of 'Greed'. His number tattoo is on his heads, and his Hollow hole is in his left thigh.

His Zanpakuto is Glotonería, which transforms him into an enormous octopus-like creature. In this form, he has all the abilities of every Hollow he has devoured at his disposal. He additionally wields Kaien's Nejibana, a trident utilizing water-based attacks.

-->Voiced by: Kaien Shiba: Creator/ToshihikoSeki, Deep-voiced Mask: Creator/RyuzaburoOtomo, High-voiced Mask: Mayumi Yamaguchi (JP), Kaien Shiba: Dave Mallow, Deep-voiced Mask: Creator/KeithSilverstein, High-voiced Mask: Creator/WendeeLee (EN); Kaien Shiba: Creator/JoseGilbertoVilchis, Deep-Voiced Mask: Ricardo Brust, High-Voiced Mask: Jahel Morga (Latin-American Spanish)
* AllYourPowersCombined: As mentioned below, he has the power to absorb and use the abilities and reiatsu of the hollows he eats. Considering that he's eaten approximately 33,650 hollows during his time in Hueco Mundo, this means he has access to a lot of different powers.
%% * AnimalMotifs: His resurreccion resembles an octopus.
%% * AntagonistAbilities: PowerDuplication, but only after eating a Hollow (or a Hollow that already assimilated someone else).
* BrainInAJar: His "head" under his mask consists of two skulls floating in a jar.
* CannibalismSuperpower: Unique among Hollows, he is able to assimilate the appearance and powers of anything he eats. This is a plot point, as he assimilated Kaien Shiba -- obtaining his appearance and Soul Reaper powers -- by virtue of eating Metastacia.
* ClippedWingAngel: His release is extremely large and makes him a bigger target. It resembles a very bloated octopus.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: He impersonates Kaien Shiba in order to trick and manipulate Rukia, and tries to convince her to kill herself to atone for Kaien's death.
%% * DeathByIrony: He's impaled by the girl he impaled moments before.
* DemonicPossession: Downplayed. Since he absorbed Metastacia, he's able to control the corpse of the last person Metastacia possessed.
* EvilLaugh: Lets one out, rather stupidly in retrospect, while holding Rukia on his trident over his head.
* FaceStealer: One of the applications of his primary power is that he can assume the shape of any hollow he's eaten. By virtue of absorbing Metastacia, who had fused with Kaien, he's able to use Kaien's face in place of his real one.
* FreakinessShame: He masks the capsule containing his two heads, and tells Rukia that he's sick of people asking him about it.
* Greed: He's very proud of his ability to steal other peoples' powers and use them for his own purposes. In fact, his goal in life is to evolve into an UltimateLifeForm via endless evolution through being a PowerParasite.
%% * Hammerspace: How the hell is he able to hide his Zanpakuto under his glove?
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: While being held in the air by Aaroniero's trident, Rukia points her broken Zanpakuto at his face and uses Shirafune to restore her sword, stabbing Aaroniero through one of his skulls. She swung her sword down, breaking the rest of his jar and killing him.
* InformedAbility: According to him, he'd absorbed the special abilities of no less than 33,650 other Hollows. Despite this, he never actually uses any powers other than Kaien's zanpakuto and some CombatTentacles. Ulquiorra mentions a third, in passing, calling it synchronized recognition, which apparently let him transmit information between all the Arrancar.
* LovecraftianSuperpower: His Zanpakuto takes on the form of a gaping maw with several tentacles surrounding it, which he somehow hides under his glove, and when released he transforms into a grotesque, bloated abomination composed of tentacles and mouths.
* MakingASplash: Due to having eaten Metastacia, who had fused with Kaien Shiba, he has access to Kaien's Nejibana, which can summon large torrents of water with every swing.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: His skulls both have rows of jagged teeth at their cheeks, while the octopus has faces on the side.
* OffstageVillainy: Along with Szayel, Aaroniero is the only other Espada that literally went to Hell after dying, but we didn't see enough from him to determine exactly why. Presumably, his treatment of Rukia is supposed to be an indication of his normal behavior, though it's little different than many other non hellbound villains get.
* PowerParasite: Absorbed Kaien Shiba and Metastacia into him, which allowed Aaroniero to use Metastacia's DemonicPossession and Zanpakuto destruction ability, along with the water from Nejibana's zanpakutou power.
* PronounTrouble: Nobody ever refers to Aaroniero by a pronoun, making it ambiguous over whether Aaroniero is to be referred to as a "he" or as "they" (because of the two talking skulls).
* SevenDeadlySins: He has two. Aaroniero's resurrección is called Glotonería, meaning "Gluttony". His "Aspect of Death" was confirmed to be Greed.
* ShapeshifterGuiltTrip: He impersonates Kaien in order to manipulate Rukia, but she figures out he's not the real Kaien when he tells her he'll forgive her if she kills her comrades.
* TorsoWithAView: Aaroniero's Hollow hole in in his left thigh. Pretty important bone right there. Also a major artery. Of course, considering what his head and Zanpakuto look like, his body under his clothing probably isn't that humanoid compared to the other Arrrancar.
* UltimateLifeForm: Claimed to be one, since he gains the powers and memories of anything he eats, plus the powers and memories of anything they ate, giving him the potential for endless evolution.
* VillainousBreakdown: Once Rukia manages to stab through his jarhead, the top head just curses while the lower head screams about being betrayed by Aizen about never being in pain again.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: One head has a high-pitched voice and one very deep voice.
* WeakenedByTheLight: While it hurts him, it does not make him helpless. It does cancel his shapeshifting ability, however.
* TheWorfEffect: Very rare villainous version. He appears in the prelude of Hell Verse solely as a means of helping the audience gauge the power level of Hell's denizens.

caption-width-right:250:

-->"Piss me off more, and more, and more! The more you do, the more pathetic your final deaths will be!"

Ranked 10 and Zero of the Espada, Yammy is clearly the largest of the group. He's extremely arrogant and loves to destroy things and murder everybody in his way, believing they're nothing but insects. He isn't the smartest though and usually has Ulquiorra explain things. In conjunction with this, he also lacks versatility when fighting. He defines the death aspect of 'Rage'. His number tattoo is on his left shoulder and his Hollow hole is in his sternum.

His Zanpakuto is Ira, which transforms him into a gargantuan... thing vaguely resembling a cross between a centipede and an Ankylosaurus if he is angered. If he is to be further angered in this state, he can additionally transform into an even bigger form resembling a gorilla.

-->Voiced by: Creator/KenjiNomura (JP), Creator/PaulStPeter (EN), Nicolás Frías (Latin-American Spanish)
* AnArmAndALeg: Ichigo manages to cut off his right arm in their first fight, but the arm is left intact for him to get it reattached, preventing him from losing his Espada rank like Grimmjow when his arm was cut off and subsequently incinerated by Tousen. He's lost the arm again by the time Byakuya and Kenpachi defeat him offscreen.
* AnimalMotifs: His resurreccion resembles cross between a centipede and an Ankylosaurus. His powered up form resembles an ape.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: He can apparently change size in his sealed form; when Chad sees him again in Las Noches, he notes that he's far larger than he was in the real world. And then there's his release... And his second powerup if that was even possible.
* BattleDiscretionShot: After seeing Renji, Chad, and Rukia gear up to fight the now-towering Yammy, we switch to... the real world to watch the other Espada get spanked. Months later when we finally return? A CurbstompBattle has taken place off-screen, with Rukia as the last one standing. The final fight with Kenpachi and Byakuya is also never shown.
* BigEater: Something of a plot point as his massive eating habits is what helps him power up in preparation for battle.
* BlatantLies: When his released state has Rukia in his grip, she attempts to free herself by firing a Kido blast in his face. He stats wailing about how "That really hurt!", though Rukia realizes that he wasn't affected at all. He then claims that the attack hurt him so much that he lost his grip on her, as he throws her as hard as he can to the ground.
* BlessedWithSuck: The databook indicates that the Espada are ranked by Reiatsu, and Yammy's 0 rank comes from having the most when he releases since his power increases whenever he's angry. Unfortunately, this means Yammy has practically none of the special abilities that made the other 9 Espada and Arrancar in general so deadly, and as such Kenpachi and Byakuya are able to defeat him with minimal effort.
* TheBrute: Yammy is an unskilled mass of raw temper and rage, who lives for destroying and consuming souls and never develops the spiritual skills that make other Espada and even Fracciones so dangerous. He is the lowest-ranking member of the Espada until his rage-fuelled Resureccion is released, which powers him up to become the strongest, angriest, most violent and most thoughtless of all Espada. As a result, he is viewed as an embarrassment by the Espada and an unworthy opponent by the Soul Reapers.
* CannibalismSuperpower: Through the Arrancar Arc, he was apparently eating the dead Arrancars to make himself stronger.
* CatchPhrase: Szayelaporro claims that he tends to yell "Suerte!" ("Luck!" in Spanish) when he comes across a good opponent, though Yammy's only seen saying it when he first encountered Ichigo. When keeping him from attacking Ichigo, Ishida turns this on him by quipping "Mala suerte." ("Bad luck." in Spanish) before sending him to the bottom of the tower.
* ClippedWingAngel: Despite the high strength level of his Resurrección's two forms, he was easily defeated by Kenpachi and Byakuya -- who were more intent on fighting each other.
%% * CurbStompBattle: His off-screen fight with Rukia, Chad, and Renji, which he won.
* DumbMuscle: Yammy's brash attitude and low intelligence lead to others -- namely Kenpachi, Byakuya and Ulquiorra -- not taking him seriously despite his massive strength.
* HulkingOut: Yammy starts off huge and bulks up enormously in between appearances by gorging himself, growing more powerful as he does so. His two Resurrección forms bulk him up even more, though he's still easily beaten by two Captain-class Soul Reapers.
* IgnoredEnemy: Kenpachi and Byakuya barely seem to notice he's there after a while as they keep sniping at each other.
* ImAHumanitarian: He explains that his boost in power is a result of "eating" a lot. Since one of his attacks involves sucking out the souls of humans and devouring them, and that Hollows are cannibalistic by nature, it seems he was eating the dead Espada and Fracciones.
* InformedAbility: His status as the strongest Espada is this. Whatever WordOfGod may have to say on the subject he never actually shows himself to be more than a blowhard, as Kenpachi and Byakuya, both already seriously injured from fighting Espada supposedly considerably weaker than him, were able to tear him apart without trying, and he's ultimately defeated off-screen.
* Jerkass: Hooh boooy. He mass-murders a ton of humans on a whim, nearly kills Tatsuki, splits Sado's arm in half, beats Ichigo to a pulp, punches Inoue across the field, crushes Rukia in his hand, swats Menoly into a wall, brutalized Loly without any real reason, throws stuff at his dog, needlessly killed a nurse right after she reattached his arm and badmouthed his comrades after they died.
%% * KickTheDog: A literal example: He mistreated his fraccion, Kukkapūro, who resembled a dog.
%% * LeeroyJenkins: Rushes into every fight, but loses every single time.
* LeftForDead: Byakuya and Kenpachi ignored him so much they didn't even bother to finish him off. They just left him bleeding and broken in Hueco Mundo while they went home. He died soon after his sole Fraccion (a dog Arrancar) visited him.
* LickedByTheDog: Yammy is a complete and utter bastard from his introduction to his death, but a small yappy Hollow Dog appears to like him. It doesn't entirely count as a PetTheDog moment, since his entire relationship with it is telling it to shut up, but at least he never seemed to attack it like he did to a nurse. That dog is his Fraccion, by the way, and he's called Kukkapūro.
* MarathonBoss: While he might not have looked like much, Yammy still fought with Byakuya and Kenpachi for over an hour before his death. In terms of fights based on manga time, he fought the longest out of any antagonist.
* MasterOfNone: WordOfGod says his powers work something like this; he's the most physically powerful and has the highest Spirit Energy of the Espada, explaining the Zero rank, but the tradeoff is that he has no gimmicks whatsoever, having to rely solely on brute strength and the powers all Hollows have. This, of course, makes him a far less effective fighter than any of the others.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Yammy Zig Zags with this trope. At first it seems he's incredibly weak, then he reveals that he's actually the 0th Espada and technically above Starrk. And he still gets his ass kicked. Then he reveals that he's just not at full power and goes to full power mode... and he still gets his ass kicked. The Espada are ranked according to spiritual pressure, and Yammy's is the highest, but he lacks all the extra bells and whistles that make the other Espada so dangerous, so in the end he ultimately subverts this trope. Kenpachi describes their fight as boring, a criteria he applies to any fight where his life is not in danger at any point.
* RedHerring: He was... disarmed by Ichigo in his first appearance, is smacked around by Ulquiorra, and generally makes an ass of himself, giving the impression that he isn't all that powerful. Renji and the others feel confident enough to tangle with him and guess what?! Espada #0!
* SevenDeadlySins: Kubo Tite revealed in the Masked interview that some of the Espada were modeled after the Seven Deadly Sins. Yammy's resurrección is called "Ira", so he should be Wrath.
* SpeakIllOfTheDead: He made sure to call Ulquiorra and Nnoitra garbage after they died. Same with Grimmjow, but he's alive in the manga. Ichigo finds himself disgusted, despite them being his enemies who he doesn't regret cutting down, and noted that Orihime seemed more sad about Ulqiorra's death than his own fellow Espada.
%% * ThereWasADoor: He tends to just burst through walls if he's in a hurry. And sometimes if he's not.
* TorsoWithAView: Has a hole right in the center of his gut.
* UngratefulBastard: What do you do when a fellow Arrancar nurse just reattached your torn arm? Why, bash her head off intending to smash her up to her feet, of course! The fact that you could only smash her head rather than her entire body clearly means she did a terrible job.
* UnskilledButStrong: He has the highest amount of raw power of any of the Espada, but he lacks any of their special tricks like Respira or Starrk's wolves. He doesn't even seem to have Sonido. Thus, he has the top position without being the most effective combatant.

* YourSoulIsMine: By inhaling, the souls of any muggle level beings in range are extracted and flow into his mouth.
