Back in the day ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' was first released, it was an ambitious, yet successful attempt at a GenreThrowback to old-school ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' titles. The fact there would be a sequel was only the first in a long line of [[SugarWiki/AndTheFandomRejoiced rejoice-inducing]] elements that come back for this series and its modern take on classic Mario side-scrollers.

* ''NSMBW'' marks the return of the Koopalings to official 2D Mario platformers (in between this game and ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'', they were in ''VideoGame/HotelMario'' and ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'' and [[DummiedOut were going to be]] in ''VideoGame/SuperPrincessPeach''). Also, this marks the first time they appeared alongside Bowser Jr., and many people were happy for that, too.
* Not to mention, [[PowerupMount Yoshi]], [[TheBusCameBack Kamek]]...in fact, there was practically a new one every time a new preview went up.
* People were going "ItsEasySoItSucks" over due to Nintendo making it the flagship game for their patented "kind code" which lets the computer take over and allows players to jump back in whenever they want. A few months later, the "kind code" (named "Super Guide" in the game) was revealed to [[MercyMode only be available after failing a level eight times]], and allowed for the developers to make the levels themselves harder while still letting less-able players see the whole game. The comments have been oddly positive since, and the game (and the feature) has since been released to near universal-acclaim.

* A new old-school ''Mario'' throwback was announced, then fully revealed as ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros2''... SugarWiki/AndTheFandomRejoiced.
* The return of the non-Tanooki Raccoon Tail is this for both nostalgic value (as it's even more iconic than the [[VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand 3D Land-featured]] Tanooki Suit) and gameplay value (it doesn't simply slow your fall this time, it ''flies'').
* The flying powerup's comeback comes alongside the obligatory P-Charge bar, on the bottom-left corner of the screen as it was back in the ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'' days.
* Luigi was confirmed to be in the game on Nintendo's Website/{{Facebook}} page almost as soon as the game was fully revealed. This showcased the one bright side of them reusing ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii'' assets and not starting from scratch, in that the game reached the end of its development pretty fast.
** Luigi is unlockable in Single Player mode.
* This game was released at retail and the Nintendo eShop simultaneously, making it the first major Nintendo title to ever have a digital release.
* [[http://www.mariowiki.com/File:3DS_NewMario2_2_scrn05_E3.png Looks like]] [[VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld Reznor's]] [[TheBusCameBack Bus Came Back.]] About time!
* [[http://www.mariowiki.com/images/3/39/Koopalings-NSMB2.png The Koopalings have returned once again,]] and it looks like they're here to stay.
* Okay, the game is out, now why is there a notification in my 3DS... okay, Nintendo's bragging about the game's success, saying that players worldwide have collected a grand total of 100 ''billion'' coins, BlahBlahBlah... wait, what? Did you just say you re-opened all the Toad Houses as your way to celebrate this? Wow -- of course, the fact that Toad Houses being open is tied to Nintendo's decision isn't that great -- but still, that's awfully nice of you! Thanks!
** They did it again when the total went up to ''300'' billion coins, but maybe they can give us more than... what's this, [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Golden_Classic_Course_Pack "Golden Classic Course Pack"?]] Wait, is it... ''a NostalgiaLevel pack given away '''for free'''?!'' And the three levels featured are, in order, 1-1 from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'' (with 1-2 as its underground part), 1-1 from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'', ''and'' the first castle (1-4) from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'', thus giving us the chance to face Bowser [[spoiler: without having to face the FinalBoss]]?!? We'd say "take our money, Nintendo", but this is given away for free... ''and'' it's available until February 2013!!!

[[folder: Video Game/New Super Mario Bros U ]]

* Ever since it was a tech demo for the UsefulNotes/WiiU, ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosU'' (then called "New Super Mario Bros. Mii") was little more than... well, a tech demo. But after its full reveal at E3 2012, well, [[SugarWiki/AndTheFandomRejoiced things just got real.]]
* The numerous throwbacks to ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'', a nice change of pace after the ones to ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'' found in ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros2'' and ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand''.
* The first player can finally play as someone other than Mario.
** It's less of a thing to rejoice about in that this only applies in the various free modes; the first player is still pointlessly forced to play as Mario in the main story.
*** Thankfully, ''Deluxe'' gives you the option to play as someone other than Mario even in the main story.
* The announcement of the possibility of more characters, a power up selection that rivals ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'' (which means the game may have at least ''8'' different power-ups), and the option of making co-op players intangible to one another. However, the extra characters and intangible feature did not make it into the game.
* This game puts a twist on the usual SaveThePrincess ExcusePlot that while Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad are visiting Princess Peach, Bowser's airship literally grabs the heroes and throws them all the way out of the Mushroom Kingdom, making Princess Peach [[VideoGame/SuperMario64 on]][[VideoGame/PaperMario64 ce]] [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy again]] a prisoner within her own castle. The four heroes must then race back to the Mushroom Kingdom to save her.
* [[InfiniteOneUps The one-up trick]] now has [[AscendedExtra an official game mode entirely devoted to it!]]
* TimeAttack mode finally makes its official game debut in the Mario series!
* The [[OverworldNotToScale world map]], akin to ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' (sort of), is now shared between all worlds. In other words, every world map is stuck to the next one and shares the same screen. Sure, it feels a bit "forced", as the whole thing now looks similar to a patchwork, but still, it's a very nice touch indeed.
* The "Boost Rush" mode. Every level is now a FixedScrollingLevel, and it ''speeds up'' as you collect coins. Levels will get ''very'' crazy this time.
* The confirmation of this game coming out at launch, making it the first major ''Mario'' launch title since ''VideoGame/SuperMario64''.
* [[http://www.wiiz.fr/medias/soft/21/6479/58.jpg Looks like we can take the Baby Yoshis out of their levels now.]]
* Sumo Bros are in! As is Kamek! Not only that, but [[http://nintendo3dsdaily.com/nintendoarticles/new-super-mario-bros-u-kamek-and-boom-boom-shown/ Kamek even helps out Boom Boom with magic!]]
* All of the Koopalings now have different fighting styles, which pleases some people considering that their battles in the last two games were considerably similar to each other. For example, Iggy's battle has him running on the ceiling and summoning lava monsters.
* An accurate representation of what most gamers felt when dealing with the inevitable FinalBoss battle against [[BigBad Bowser]]: "Okay, we made it to the top, and Bowser's turned giant again, cue [[VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii chase]] [[VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros2 scene]]--wait, [[spoiler:we're outside? This is a new place to run from--HOLY SHIT, BOWSER JUST JUMPED IN FRONT OF ME THIS TIME! You mean I have to '''''FIGHT''''' him?! What the hell do I do now?! And Bowser Jr. is trying to get some hits in--wait a minute, his clown car is stuck! Maybe I can hit him and--I knocked him OUT of the car?! Wait...oh my god, I jacked his copter! Does this actually mean I can...'''''I JUST LANDED AN ACTUAL HIT ON [[OneWingedAngel GIANT BOWSER]]?!?!?!''''' That's it, THIS is the BestBossEver!]]"
* Nintendo made ''VideoGame/NewSuperLuigiU'' that features [[EnsembleDarkHorse Luigi]] in a single-player campaign with 80 new and challenging levels! Year of Luigi[[note]] Nintendo themselves called 2013 as such due to the year marking a MilestoneCelebration for Luigi's debut in ''Videogame/MarioBros''; also, ''VideoGame/LuigisMansionDarkMoon'' and ''Videogame/MarioAndLuigiDreamTeam'' came out in 2013[[/note]], indeed!
** It seems that Luigi will get his [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBrosTheLostLevels trademark high jump and slippery traction]] for this title as well!
** For those who prefer "hard copies" to digital downloads, it can also be bought by itself in disc form or [[UpdatedRerelease bundled with the original.]]
* On September 13th, 2018, Nintendo officially announced that the game will be [[UpdatedRerelease making its way to]] the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch with ''New Super Luigi U'' included out of the box and Toadette being included as a playable character!
* Fans afraid that Blue Toad was {{Retcon}}ned out of the ''Deluxe'' team can be put at ease as of the release, since he's just become an alternate Toad skin (though he and Yellow Toad can't play at the same time).
