Projectile TV Off Switch

Toss something through the TV when it shows something you don't like

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Apparently off switches don't exist in fiction. A character will grab the nearest object and throw it through the screen as a sign that he/she has just seen something problematic. Up for Grabs.

Also, Lost The TV Remote is another reason.

    See also Shoot The TV.

Yeah, we'll have to move some examples over from Shoot The TV. "Shooting the TV" and "Throwing Something Through the TV" seem to be Sister Tropes.

^ Or we could just expand Shoot The TV from actual shooting to any kind of destructive behavior to video-transmitting screens.

Why? The trope is called "Shoot The TV", not "Throw Stuff At The TV". If you want to expand the scope of Shoot The TV, you'd have to rename it to "Destroy The TV Instead Of Turning It Off."

we could call it "There Was An Off Switch" like There Was A Door, because they both represent destructive laziness.

Look at that title. Off switch for what? There Was A Door works because "door" is sufficient description.

Joker did this in the first Batman film.

Real Life Example - several Wii disasters have been recorded, which is a pretty good reason to wear that wristband that comes with the remote.

Shoot The TV explicitly covers shooting, or breaking the TV by throwing something else at it. This is redundant. There's definitely no need to split it off since they're exactly the same thematically and practically, but an argument could potentially be made to change the name (though we do have MANY tropes that cover a broader range than their name implies).

Shoot The TV implies shooting. Either rename the existing trope or split. Perhaps a Trope Repair Shop conversation is in order.

So does Shoot The Dog, so does Shoot The Messenger. Granted, these are stock phrases, but the point is that we've got a lot of non-literal trope names. As long as the description is clear, there isn't an issue. I get where you're coming from, but it's an unnecessary rename.

Just seems like an unnecessary distinction since, in terms of significance within fiction, they are functionally identical.
