Do We Have This One?? Im Sure We Have This One

"Follow the Rimmer-shaped blur!"
Arnold Rimmer, Red Dwarf Series eight.

Hey look there's a giant monster smashing up the city!! Oh look, it's coming right at us...!

....

RUN!!!

This trope is about those time when characters pause a moment before panicking when something BIG or very threatening is coming towards them. Often they will comment on the fact that they aren't reacting. Usually it is down to the Rule of Funny, however they can and do fail to realise they should run, as with the Cloverfield example. Compare and contrast Delayed Reaction.

Deer In The Headlights seems to be a close approximation. Might be a supertrope or a similar trope - still worth a mention, regardless of how this pans out.

    That does seem similar

Does anyone think this is different enough?

I think a better name would be Cinematically Delayed Panic, the one where the camera has to check in with every member of the cast, then back in with the monster, and the audience is screaming "RUN RUN RUN" at them the whole time.

Semi-related: how about when a monster should have reached the character/hero/princess by a certain time, but for solely cinematic reasons, they haven't yet...

I'm not keen on that one, but I'm open to suggestions.

I do think those are both different tropes, you could make articles for them if you want. How about Should Have Got There By Now for the monster one?

^^I'm 100% sure we've already got the "monster should have reached the character/hero/princess by a certain time..." trope, but I don't remember the name.

    It's certainly tropeable

Often combined with Dull Surprise since the performers may not be told how close the monster would appear to them through Chroma Key or editing, or even what the monster looks like so they could properly guage their level of terror.

Strictly speaking this isn't Delayed Reaction because that's specifically about Alice reacting late to something Bob says.

This definitely isn't Delayed Reaction, this is about failing to react even though you know you should. I'm going to add a compare and contrast though.

Not really. In any case, that's like saying Cowboy Bebop At His Computer is just Did Not Do The Research plus They Just Didnt Care
