(About to Launch) Love Revelation Epiphany

A develops feelings for B after coming to believe that B has feelings for them.

Love me! Why, it must be requited.
Benedick, Much Ado About Nothing

So let's say Alice and Bob have had some Unresolved Sexual Tension since forever. Everyone Can See It - how Bob hopelessly pines after Alice day after day but doesn't dare act on it, because Alice has declared that she has no feelings besides friendship for Bob, which is probably true - until Alice somehow hears from Exact Eavesdropping, from another person or from Bob himself that Bob has feelings for her.

Alice, naturally, is shocked. All of a sudden, she's looking at Bob differently, and is starting to feel something different for him, too!

This trope comes in two flavors:
  • Alice already had feelings for Bob, but it took hearing Bob's feelings for her to realize them.
  • Alice begins to develop feelings after she hears that Bob likes her.

This often is a cue for a long-overdue Relationship Upgrade in a She Is Not My Girlfriend situation. A common variation is to have Alice fall for Bob after hearing that he has feelings for her despite Bob not actually having feelings for her; often this set-up is Played for Laughs.

A subtrope of Love Epiphany. If Alice realizes her feelings for Bob after he confesses to Cheryl instead, that's Greeneyed Epiphany. The inverse of this is Entitled to Have You, in which Bob loves Alice and expects Alice to love him back.

Examples

Anime and Manga
  • At the end of the first season of Gundam 00, when the UN Forces attack Celestial Being, Lichty uses his body to shield Christina from a blast fired at the Ptolemy by a GN-X. Due to the injuries he sustained, Lichty's cybernetic body is badly damaged and torn apart, with the boy on the verge of death. It is through this action that Christina (who previously maintained a professional relationship with Lichty despite knowing of his interest in her) realizes how great a guy Lichty really is and returns his feelings of love. Sadly, both die soon afterward.
  • Makoto and Chiaki from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are of the UST variety; Makoto's denial over the fact that Chiaki asked her out sets off the rest of the story as well as culminates in her ultimately accepting her feelings for him.
  • The anime finale of Cardcaptor Sakura revolves around Syaoran finally confessing his love for Sakura, who ultimately requites the feeling and spends most of the closing movie trying to do the same. While established as being Oblivious to Love, Sakura's closeness towards Syaoran had been developed throughout the series, and punctuated by being rejected by her own unrecognized crush, Yukito.
  • Toradora!: A major plot point that Taiga was confessed to by Kitamura and only started to develop feelings for him after that.
  • Fumiya from Wandering Son had always shown attraction to Saori but it wasn't until after he begged her to go on a date with him that she agreed to dating him. Saori isn't the best of girlfriends but there isn't much to say that she doesn't love him back.
  • In Future Diary, Yuno comes into this after Yukki (jokingly) makes a marriage proposal to her. To the point of being... possessive.

Literature
  • Subverted in Anne of Green Gables, Gilbert Blythe confesses his love to Anne Shirley in the book Anne of the Island, hoping she will return his love when he finally speaks to her about it. Anne is still Oblivious to Love (in this case, her own love for Gil) and so she refuses his declaration of love/marriage proposal. (They end up together anyway.)
  • In The Sleeping Beauty Godmother Lily doesn't realize she's developed feelings for Jimson until Jimson accidentally calls her "my love".
  • Mentioned in High Fidelity, when Rob thinks about how he tends to look at someone differently after finding out they're interested in him.

Live Action TV
  • In Frasier, Daphne starts to develop feelings for Niles once she finds out that he has feelings for her.
  • Done second hand in Friends. Rachel develops feelings for Ross after Chandler accidentally spills the beans about Ross's love of Rachel while Ross is in China. She decides she loves him too and goes to meet him at the airport when he comes back, only to discover he's got a new girlfriend.
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Odo was friend-zoned by Kira until in "Children of Time," when a parallel version of Odo tells her he loves her. From that point on, Kira begins to develop feelings for him over several more episodes.
  • An episode of The Mindy Project featured Danny 'accepting' his feelings for Mindy after inferring (incorrectly) that she was romantically interested in him.
Theatre
  • Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing are tricked into falling in love because each believes that the other is in love with them.

Webcomics
  • In Penny and Aggie, Aggie becomes attracted to Penny when Penny reveals her own interest in her during a parlor game. As becomes clear from subsequent, similar moments early in their relationship, the reason Aggie only now has romantic feelings for her is that Penny, in confessing her interest, is also showing Aggie her vulnerable side for the first time.
  • In Gunnerkrigg Court, Kat has been questioning her sexuality for some time. However, she doesn't have feelings for her classmate Paz specifically until Paz sends her a Love Letter, then confesses in person and suggests they go on a date sometime.

God I've Seen It A Million times and can't remember a one. Sorry dude. Seems to happen a bit in Real Life when one person is trying to ignore Unresolved Sexual Tension in a She Is Not My Girlfriend type situation.

This is definitely tropable, and it's happened numerous times before. Unfortunately, that makes the task of finding examples a bit of a chore... Here is one I can think of, though (or at least something close).

Bump. And I will try to think of some examples... oooh, I just found a subversion!

Anne is still Oblivious To Love (in this case, her own love for Gil) and so she refuses his declaration of love/marriage proposal.

And I agree with the previous poster that this is definitely tropable, we just need to find more examples now. :)

In the interim I created a YKTTW called I Love You Love Me that's almost the same. So I like this trope, but I have some issues with its current appearance:

    • The Name: Confession of what? Epiphany about what? It's not clear at all that this has anything to do with romance. I'd suggest trying to fit the word "love" in there somewhere.
    • The Definition: I don't think a Love Confession should be a requirement for this trope. I'd expand it to include any situation where one person develops romantic feelings after realising the other is in love with them regardless of whether they learn via confession or by other means. For example, consider Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, who start to fall for each other after over-hearing conversations among their friends. Or take the examples you're already listing from Friends and Frasier. Rachel & Daphne do not learn of Ross & Niles' feelings directly from them, but second-hand from Chandler & Frasier.
    • The Description: If the definition is expanded, then the description will have to be re-written.
    And...
    • The Name: Since not all examples involve Love Confessions, it might be better to pick a name that doesn't have the word "confession" in it.

Here's the write-up for the Much Ado About Nothing example. I'd suggest making Benedick's line the page quote.

    • Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing are tricked into falling in love because each believes that the other is in love with them.
Benedick: Love me! Why, it must be requited.

Thanks, Blue Ice Tea. All right, what about:

Laconic: Character A begins to develop feelings for Character B after coming to believe that Character B has feelings for them.

Description: (I took some lines from I Love You Love Me, although I'm not feeling that title more than I'm feeling this one.)

"So let's say Alice and Bob have had some Unresolved Sexual Tension since forever. Everyone Can See It - how Bob hopelessly pines after Alice day after day but doesn't dare act on it, because Alice has declared them Just Friends. She claims that she has no feelings besides friendship for Bob, which is probably true - until Alice somehow hears from Exact Eavesdropping, from another person or from Bob himself that Bob has feelings for her.

Alice, naturally, is shell-shocked. All of a sudden, she's looking at Bob differently, and is starting to feel something different for him, too!

Whether or not Bob actually likes Alice varies; he may genuinely have feelings for her or Alice may just be mistaken.

A subtrope of Love Epiphany. If Alice realizes her feelings for Bob after he confesses to Cheryl instead, that's Greeneyed Epiphany. The inverse of this is Entitled To Have You, in which Bob loves Alice and expects Alice to love him back."

@ Blue Ice Tea: I've already explained the difference between your trope and this one in that page.
  • October 16, 2013
    BlueIceTea
@DAN004 Yes, the descriptions differ slightly, but they seem to be getting at the same basic idea. Which is why I'm suggesting a merger between the two.

@Synchronicity, that looks pretty good. It's now inclusive enough to fit all the examples.

I still have my doubts about the current name, and I'd like to try for a better one. Maybe something with the word "requited" in it?
  • October 16, 2013
    Folamh3
Definitely needs a new name. "Confession" and "epiphany" could refer to just about anything.

    • Mentioned in High Fidelity, when Rob thinks about how he tends to look at someone differently after finding out they're interested in him.
  • October 16, 2013
    BlueIceTea
Requital Impulse? Because you feel impelled to requite the other's feelings?

I think this trope's more or less publishable, but I still wish we could find a better name.

Also, I notice there's a bit of contradiction between the first and third paragraphs: the first says that Bob is definitely in love with Alice, the third that Alice may only think Bob is in love with her. Is there a way that could be re-worded?
  • October 21, 2013
    DAN004
^ I don't think there's a contradiction in them - Alice may think Bob is in love with her, but ignored those thoughts because of what Bob is or does - until he breaks out the word. Then she really starts considering her love for him.

    DAN004
Love Revelation Epiphany can work without a confession - maybe Alice eavesdrops about Bob saying that he loves her, or somebody else saying that Bob loves her. Or she reads his diary or journal.

In short, I love the title. :D

    BlueIceTea
    Hat. :)

Also made a minor edit in the description, changing "shell shocked" to "shocked". Shell shock is usually associated with severe, prolonged stress. Even allowing for a bit of poetic licence, I don't think it's a good fit for discovering someone's in love with you.
