"Hello, Zuko here. But I guess you probably already know me, sort of... Uh, so, the thing is, I have a lot of firebending experience and I'm considered to be pretty good at it. Well, you've seen me... you know, when I was attacking you?... Uh, yeah, I guess I should apologize for that. B-but anyway... I'm good now. I mean I thought I was good before but now I realize I was bad... B-but anyway... I think it's time I joined your group and taught the Avatar firebending...Well?! What's your answer?!"

So, um, well...sometimes it's - I mean, like, one of these, that is - caused by an awkward silence...or, uh, not knowing what to say on a particular subject. And also, you know, like, when they're talking in front of people? Like I am now? What's the word? You know? Like, the opposite of private? Oh! Oh, oh! I think it's public speaking. Yeah. That.

...Oh, yeah! Or a pair of rivals or opponents being forced to speak. Yeah, I forgot. If one of those happens, one of these will commence. I think. Is that what commence means? Yeah.

This also happens when, you know, someone's lying. Not that I would ever lie to you! But, I mean, sometimes when someone's lying, things get...awkward. And when you kind of epically fail at a speech. Like, yeah.

But, finally, er, when someone's, you know, asking someone else on a date? Yeah. Awkwardness. It ensues...

One of these can be characterized by it not making any sense. That's it, right? Wait, no, it can also be totally off topic, or having a lot of stuttering and... [[Beat pausing a ton.]] And they keep talking for, like...ever...

This may be suffered by a very confident character to show that he is, in fact, human, and can get nervous.

May overlap with That Came Out Wrong and other types of monologues, like Inner Monologues and Audience Monologue.

    • Sokka also suffers one of these when trying to present the invasion plan.
Sokka: Uhm… So, as you know today we’re invading the Fire Nation. I mean I know you know that. Because otherwise why else would you be here‌ Anyway… The Fire Lord’s palace is here. Uh no, uh wait, uh wait, uh wait and uh there’s an eclipse today and Aang’s going to fight the Fire Lord and the firebenders won’t have any fire to use so that’s good for us and uhm… I’m sorry, let me start at the beginning. Katara and I discovered Aang frozen in an iceberg.

I'd recommend adding a spoiler to the page quote the part about becoming Aang's firebending teacher, for anyone who hasn't gotten that far in the series, and those who haven't seen it yet.

    • Spike's explanation to Buffy as to what he is doing outside her house in "No Place Like Home" from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It starts out confidently enough when Buffy gives him five words to explain and Spike anwers while counting on his fingers "Out for a walk... (one finger left) Bitch," but quickly devolves into such awkwardness as "You know, I'm just passing through. Satisfied? You know, I really hope so because God knows you need some satisfaction in life besides shagging Captain Cardboard ...and I never really liked you anyway... and you have stupid hair."

^^^^ I'd say that if a page quote doesn't work without spoiler tags then it shouldn't be a page quote.

In the Star Trek episode Charlie X, Kirk tries to give Charlie the talk, only to fail miserably and go on talking for a while with no real purpose.

It's not monologue if he's talking to someone else. Like Zuko example.

Related to Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic.

^In the Zuko example he's rehearsing what he wants to say alone so he actually is talking to himself. That should probably be mentioned in the quote.

    • in Rat Atouille, in the night when the food critic Anton Ego visits his restaurant, Linguini tries to make a Rousing Speech in front of every other cooks, but they end up dismotivated due to how clumsy he is when he talks. Then Colette sums the whole thing up in 2 sentences and manages to make them work.

    • Formatted the Examples section.
    • Namespaced and italicized work names.
    • Added a space between the * and the first word of examples.
    • Corrected an improper Example Indentation in the Avatar The Last Airbender example.
    • As per How To Write An Example - Remember That This Is A Wiki:
      • Deleted "As shown in the quote above, " from the Avatar The Last Airbender example
      • Added the page quote to that example so it won't be lost if the page quote is changed.
      • Changed four cases of "Extremely Awkward Monologue" (and one "Extremely Awkward Silence") in the Description/Examples to "one of these" because the trope name can change.

Example As A Thesis, get rid of it. don't let the Self Demonstrating Article opportunity go to waste.

Go straight to explaining the trope awkwardly.

Also, spoilered the quote. I'd argue it'd be pretty hard to guess who the one spoilered is. there are many four letter names in the ATLA verse.

In The Jason Robert Brown song, "I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You" (cut from The Last Five Years) is an example of the asking someone out version. (though this is already listed on Digging Yourself Deeper).

I was ten years old, and her name was Elaine.

    Well, she looked like you,
    But if you were ten,

    • Iron Man 3 opens with an awkward monologue as Tony Stark struggles to make a point during his narration. This is juxtaposed with images of his armors being destroyed, which creates an interesting dissonance.

Luigi: I wanna apologize for when I get to start talkin', and I end up sayin' things that sound weird...
In fact, Nostalgia Critic points this out, and adds:
Nostalgia Critic: It's okay, Luigi, it's not you, it's just bad writing.
