Mine Episode

Trope
Needs a Better Description

Subtrope of Locked in a Freezer

One of the greatest ways to create tension in a Family Drama or even a Comedy show is to trap one or some of the main characters in a mine. May have a storyline in which one of the characters becomes a miner.

Examples:

Live-Action TV
  • Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman
  • The Waltons
  • The Andy Griffith Show had one to bring Barney and Thelma Lou closer together.
  • Lassie
  • Blue Heelers, leading to a culmination of the UST between PJ and Maggie.
  • In one episode of Kung Fu Caine is forced into working a mine as a part of a Chain Gang; naturally they get trapped underground.
  • In an early episode of Little House on the Prairie Pa goes away to find a way to earn money & send it home while his wife & daughters hold down the farm; he meets a couple of other men on the road and they all end up working the mines. One was an experienced "powder monkey:" he's the guy who carries the dynamite and sets off the explosions.
  • An episode of Blake's 7 had Avon and Servalan trapped in a mine (leading, naturally, to an Enemy Mine scenario).
  • Star Trek: The Original Series.
    • "The Devil in the Dark" takes place almost entirely in the pergium mining colony on the planet Janus VI. The Enterprise crew has to hunt down a monster that's killing the miners.
    • The last part of "The Cloud Minders" takes place in a zenite mine. Captain Kirk and his nemesis square off as Kirk tries to prove that zenite gas is causing the zenite miners to suffer mental problems.

I think this would work better as a setting trope than as an episode type.

As I recall, an episode of Blakes Seven had Avon and Servalan trapped in a mine (leading, naturally, to an Enemy Mine scenario).

"Trapped in a mine" and "set in a mine" aren't necessarily the same thing.

Isn't there already a "trapped in a X" trope of some sort, that include elevators, vaults, etc? I think that would cover the episode type. Though I suppose a lot of works that use a mine as a setting would then use a cave-in as the climax, but not as the inciting incident.

Locked In A Room and Locked In A Freezer are for when a character or characters are trapped in something. This would be a subtrope of Locked In A Freezer that focuses on an episode type or even a setting type.

This has nothing to do with a villian. The mine or cave seals itself in a Closed Circle kind of way creating a Locked In A Freezer plot.

Saturday Night Live's Hip Hop Kids parodied the format once in "Episode 42: Yo,Yo,Yo,! How we gonna get outta this mine shaft, yo!" Hip Hop dancing somehow couldn't free them from the mine. Or prevent them from beeing eaten by cave creatures.

Hmmmm...every third Doctor Who episode for a while in there dealt with mines and mining. Actually trapped (by cave ins and whatnot) I'd say "The Monster of Peladon" and "The Green Death".

    • The song "Big John" is about miners who are trapped by a rock-fall and the titular character holds up the ceiling so they can escape, eventually being crushed himself.

With reference to the above, should that incident with the Chilean miners go under Real Life?
