Volcano Lair

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Some people want to live not at volcano's feet, but in a volcano. Active or extinct. A mountain with crater is a relatively defencible location, it looks impressive and Everything's Cooler With Lava. Usually Supervillain Lair, but not always. Naturally predisposed to become a Collapsing Lair.

Most feature labyrintine cave complex, Lava Pits and use of free heat. Often done in a rather careless manner. May or may not be located on an island.

    • Subverted in Noone Lives Forever 2. It looks like this but, as it turns out, the actual lava pit inside the base would be too troublesome - so the villains use synthetic lava instead.
    • The Original Gobwin Knob in Erfworld was built on an extinct volcano.

It should be noted that Dr. Jyrras' Island Base is a lampshade of this trope
After all, nothing quite says "intelligent" like having 70 billion dollars of equipment next to an unstable volcano!

    • Evil Harry Dread, the low-budget Evil Overlord in The Last Hero, complains that other Dark Lords somehow manage to get volcano lairs even when the local geology is completely wrong for them.
